"Metal" Bands that actually pose

2024.05.16 01:33 MassivePaintStooge "Metal" Bands that actually pose

There's a lot of metal bands that are considered not poser that actually pose. A lot of you rep these bands thinking it makes you trve cvlt or something, but it actually makes me sick. I am making this post to expose some bands that aren't commonly thought of as poser, but actually are. If you are offended by the fact you like one of these poser bands, maybe consider getting better taste in metal. There is a time and place for a lot of the hard rock you guys listen to, but it isn't in a metal discussion.
Emperor - This band is considered "black metal", but their first album is way too accessible to be real black metal. It's pretty much just thrash metal. The rest of their albums aren't even metal at all. I don't understand why this band is given respect. They are not trve in any sense of the word.
Burzum - Similar to Emperor, Burzum albums are hardly black metal. There's a reason why all of the mainstream attention black metal has been getting recently has been going to Burzum. If Varg wasn't a criminal (amongst other things), this stuff would play on your local butt rock station sandwiched between Godsmack and Nickelback.
Cannibal Corpse - What happens when you put guttural vocals over pop songs.
Rotting Christ - Blackened Hard Rock. Hardly even blackened at that. I like this stuff for when I'm riding in the car with my boomer dad and need something he can tolerate (old ears), but I'm not sure why this band is lumped in with metal. This stuff is a lot closer to Led Zeppelin than Black Metal.
Obituary - A groove metal band that went Nu Metal. This band is literally Machine Head with a sore throat. They've got some banger hard rock riffs in their discography that I quite enjoy, but this is basically lobotomized Pantera without the NSBM. Did I mention the rap songs?
Death - Released two FM radio "Death Metal" records then started writing pop music.
Entombed - Swedish Black Label Society. Dropped that one decent hard rock record then switched to Rock n' Roll.
Cult of Luna/Isis/Neurosis/Post-Metal/Atmo-Sludge - I'm pretty sure this stuff is already considered poser, but this stuff is not even metal. Heck a lot of the time it isn't even rock music. This shit is straight up R&B for 80+% most of the record. Guess Post-Metal and Post-Rock mean not metal and not rock.
Nails - This one actually makes me extremely angry. This band is for people who want to say they listen to Grindcore without actually listening to Grindcore. This is literally Hatebreed who occasionally plays at 1.5x speed. There is nothing grind about this band, and hell, it's hardly even core. This is some actual poser shit, and I know the hipsters who listen to this shitty band think they are so trve cvlt. You're not you idiots. Listen to real Grindcore if you want some respect.
Autopsy - This is what kids who only put their ankles in the pool grow up to listen to when they try to get into Death Metal.
War Metal as a whole - I'm not sure how you combined Death Metal and Black Metal and made something more accessible than both, but here we are. I'll bet it has something to do with originating from Canada and letting that Nickelback influence seep in.
Morbid Angel - Some of the best riffs in all of proto-metal
Wormrot - "Grindcore" for people who won't enter the crosswalk while the hand is flashing.
Ulver - The first time I listened to this band I was actually insulted. I came for black metal and left with Taylor Swift's Evermore. This band is the actual literal definition of posing. Trying to be something that they're not. Ulver fans are a sad bunch. Listen to real Black Metal. If you unironically like this band, you simply have undeveloped taste. Like actual child eating only nuggies and mac n cheese taste.
Agalloch - The Ghost (band) of Black Metal. Not sure how you can say you like this with a straight face without fear of being sent to poser jail. People put this fuckin band on sleep playlists on spotify.
Immortal/Dissection - Basically the same band. Blackened At The Gates
BONUS ALBUM ... The Red in the Sky is Ours by At The Gates... if you think this poses less than Slaughter of the Souls, you're gaslighting yourself. It poses just as hard.
So, if you actually want to listen to real metal, make sure you don't listen to the bands above anymore. There is a time and a place for hard rock, pop, and R&B music, but it is not during a discussion about metal. Leave that shit to when you're posting on TaylorSwift or something.

2024.05.12 13:37 SquareAltruistic5548 X-Men in 1997--Reading Every X-Franchise Comic released in 1997: Alpha Flight, Beast, Bishop: XSE *SPOILERS*

https://preview.redd.it/11dsma6pfzzc1.jpg?width=787&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6df4992f805e96fa7b0e8782be1018a2fff0a70
With the success and popularity of the X-Men '97 animated streaming series, I thought it would be a good idea to look directly at the year, and X-Men comics, that inspired its title. 1997 was a bit of a strange year in Marvel history. The Onslaught event had put a third of the Marvel universe into the alternate "Heroes Reborn" continuity, DC was working in conjunction with Marvel to publish the Amalgam line of one shots, longtime and beloved executive editor Mark Gruenwald had just passed away suddenly from a heart attack the previous summer, and Thunderbolts #1 would deliver one of the greatest plot twists in comic book history. The X-Line was still still an absolute leviathan at this point, publishing 30+ titles of various on-goings, one shots, and limited series across the year. Are any of them any good? Let's find out.
We'll be breaking this up into chunks since I have to read over 100 comics and I also don't want to be posting a novel every time I make out of these posts. I'll also not be reviewing reprints that were published in Essential X-Men as they were not actually written to be published in 1997.
--Alpha Flight Vol 2. #1-7 and Alpha Flight: In the Beginning #-1 by Writer Steve Seagle, and Pencilers Scott Clark, Martin Egeland, Brian Denham, Bryan Hitch, and Anthony Winn
The most evil government in the 616 Marvel Universe isn't Latveria, The United States, Russia, or China, it's Canada. The engage in child trafficking, kidnapping, mass surveillance, mind control, and human experimentation--all in the first issue! Beast was right, our insidious neighbors to the north are Mutantkind's greatest foe.
The new series, which picks up "several" years after Alpha Flight Vol 1., opens the only way that it really could: With Wolverine! Of course this is just a Wolverine robot copy that Guardian, aka James MacDonald "Mac" Hudson, is in a training exercise with. Things don't go well when the Ol'Canucklehead does what he does best, in a robot clone sort of way, to Mac and impales him with his claws. James is dragged off by some men, and General Clarke and some mysterious figures wrapped in shadow say some cryptic things. This is a common motif for this volume so get used to it.
We then flash forward to Puck, aka Eugene Milton Judd, who is sort of our main character for this volume. He has been living like an average Canadian since Alpha broke up at the Vol 1. Drinking beer, saying "eh" a lot, and having an apartment. He receives a mysterious piece of information about the nefarious dealings going on at a reformed Alpha Flight. This is a common motif for this volume so get used to it.
Puck decides to bring this information to Vindicator, aka Heather McNeil Hudson, his former teammate and and Guardian's Ex(?) Wife. She has been been having PTSD flashback dreams about witnessing Guardian blowing up back in Volume 1. She and Puck meet at a coffee shop to discuss the message when they're suddenly attacked by armored goons! Said goons turn out to be Department H operatives who knock out our heroes and drag them back to Department H to be drafted into a new Alpha Flight.
We have some old and new members to be introduced to in the new Alpha. Maddison Jefferies is there, although he gets kidnapped at the end of issue 1 and everyone is mind controlled to forget this so don't worry too much about him. Sasquatch, who everyone thinks is Walter Langkowski but turns out is a literal Big Foot, is completely bestial and looks very different from classic Sas. "Very Different" meaning he's drawn like a WildC.A.T.s or Spawn character. Then we have our new characters and ohhhh boy. First up is Manbot, who's a guy named Bernie Lachenay that Department H grafted into an old Box robot. He mostly rolls around, is mysterious, and may have his own agenda. Then we have our trio of new mutant characters. First is Murmer, aka Arelette Truffaut, who is uhhhh French Canadian and talks with a french accent. Her power is touch based mind control that is as effective as the plot requires. She is also constantly trying to get with Radius, aka Jared Corbo, who has Unus the Untouchable powers but worse since he can't turn them off and also a terrible personality. He CAN'T FEEL or LIVE A NORMAL LIFE due to his force field, so don't even try to get close to him, MAN! One of those edgy 90s characters that everyone hates 25 years after the fact and kind of only shows up today as an easter egg or corpse for some sort of mutant massacre. Finally we have Flex, aka Adrian Corbo, who is a wimpy little sad boy. He can make his hands, and occasionally ankles, into knives. Sunfire makes an appearance seeking help for a radiation poisoning/cancer plot line. Finally, Guardian reappears, who has been mysteriously de-aged to 19 years old and has no memories of his former life.
So many mysteries lie at the heart of Department H, will our heroes ever get to the bottom of them? I think my main problem with the title is two fold, the art and the fact that they are just kind of spinning their wheels for these issues. They fight a new Zodiac, who has some sort of elaborate plot that will be resolved later I presume. They fight The Master of the World, except not really since he is a robot clone created by Department H to train the team. They fight Mesmero for two and half issues in a diner that just ends with him getting away and Murmur having a breakdown after being hit in the face with a pie. All of it feels like the team is just having its time wasted by Department H. The series itself is operating off of this 90s X-Files style paranoia about corrupt governments, militarized super heroes, and thought control through the institutions we trust. Which is a neat concept, and predates the Ultimates and The Authority by several years. However it just is really taking its sweet time getting going.
The art, with the exception of Issue #6 drawn by Bryan Hitch, is very...Liefeldian in parts. Guardian has that sort of sneering muzzle that Liefeld patented in X-Force in the early 90s. Vindicator and Murmur are incredibly, impossibly, thin and elongated and at times almost look like they don't have organs or bones. The action is kind of hard to follow in parts as well. Not my favorite visual style at all.
The -1 issue follows the meeting and then the marriage of James and Heather, and features, who else, WOLVERINE. It has Stan Lee show up as a Catholic priest to marry them as well. The issue is also notable in that it's the first appearance of Chinook, a golden age Canadian superhero who controls the wind, who shows up for all of one page to save Wolverine before crashing into a cosmic ray collector screaming "AIEEEEEE THE PAIN" and horribly mutating into a villain. Funny stuff.
Would I recommend Alpha Flight Volume 2? Well, it's starts off really slow and the art is really damn spotty at times. The themes and ideas it's dealing with are about a half decade ahead of their time, so I'll give it that. If you can grin and bear it, maybe?
--Beast Vol 1. #1-3 by Writers Keith Giffen and Terry Kavanagh and Penciler Cedric Nocon
Karma, aka Xuân Cao Manh, has been, editorially, stuck in a really shitty situation. For the past 10 years, real time, she has been searching for her kidnapped younger siblings Leong and Nga. Well guess what Karma fans? The dozens of you out there will finally see this plot point resolved! In a 3 issue limited series starring Beast and Cannonball!
Viper, who is seeking revenge against Karma because her evil brother Trân mindcontrolled her to be a part of Karma's evil uncle's harem(gross), has turned over the siblings to Spiral. Old six arms mutates them into aged up killing machine genetic abominations. Oh yeah, this is a 90s Terry Kavanagh X-Men story alright. Karma tracks them down with Beast and Cannonball's help and uhhhh rescues them? However, Beast says they're going to be stuck as freakish living weapons forever. Sucks to be you Karma.
You know, this is a lost art in modern comics. Devoting an entire limited series about a whole other character to resolving a long outstanding plot point that no one else has really addressed in years. It's kind of charming almost. The art is fine. Read if you want to see a throwback to a style that isn't really used in modern comics a lot. Or if you're a fan of Karma.
--Bishop: XSE Vol 1. #1 by Writer John Ostrander and Penciler Steve Epting
Bishop leads the XAVIER SECURITY ENFORCERS consisting of his racist sister and two other dorks against evil mutants who want to see the fragile peace between humans and mutants established after they had worked together to overthrow the evil sentinel regime broken. A decedent of Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club are also pulling the strings from the shadows, natch.
I like John Ostrander a lot. Suicide Squad, The Spectre, and Grimjack are some of my favorite comics of all time. Steve Epting is also a really good artist, and while he's not quite what he would become here the art is clean and attractive. However, I feel like this issue is a bit light on both plot and character. One doesn't really get a sense of Bishop at all, he's just sort of there. Oh well, read if you're a fan of the character. Plus there's a character named Dogface!
Next Time: Cable & Deadpool & The Daydreamers.

2024.05.11 16:47 Princess2045 Help me find CSI NY episode

I tried skimming through a few episodes but I couldn’t find which one it was that I’m thinking of. I can only remember a scene related to the autopsy where Mac and I think Hawkes were in the 3D CT room. The vic was like poisoned or something and their intestines were blown up in the room to show that they were all like wrinkly, as if they had been burned. I skimmed through both Forbidden Fruit and Reignited but neither had the scene.

2024.05.11 04:58 DaBooch69 My personal rewrite of the final fight and ending of Restoration

I was not the biggest fan of Restoration. While I liked the first half, the second and ending really floundered for me and made some odd writing decisions I don't think were bad, just poorly executed. That's what this rewrite is for. My own personal activity to show what I would've preferred from the finale.
Please note: I AM NOT A BETTER WRITER THEN BERNIE OR THE ROOSTER TEATH STAFF. I am a moron who cares waaaaayyy too much about these dumbass characters and just can't help himself. I am not attempting to claim this is better then Restoration; this is just a writing exercise for fun.
Additions to the first half:
* Lopez comes along. He doesn't just get left behind at Red Base, he actually gets to come along and do something. Not anything big, just something to keep him relevant and not just discard him.
* Donut can appear as a cardboard cutout of himself that everyone except Lopez, even Church, thinks is real. If Donut's VA is busy (which I heard is the reason for his absence), then make it a joke.
* Meta lures Caboose out of hiding during Hardgrove's ship battle by using Delta's voice to lull him into a false sense of security. This is something I thought of that I'm surprised didn't happen.
* Sarge dies saving Caboose, not in the ship. He charges in, gets grabbed like he does in the Ice Fight. Meta mentions how they don't appreciate Sarge killing their last host, stabs him, and throws him to the ground. Arriving too late, Grif and Simmons trap Meta with the bubble shield and Caboose carries Sarge back to the ship. Sarge does his whole dying schpeel, but since Lopez is here, Sarge looks to him last and says, in perfect Spanish, "You were always my favorite."
Ok, the actual finale.
Lopez goes in to fight Meta with Grif and Simmons, wanting to avenge Sarge. He can get his ass kicked too, and his head ripped off in classic Lopez style.
Here's the big twist I came up with. Instead of dicking around on the cliff, Wash remembers a detail from his briefing on the Blood Gulch incident. A Freelancer asset left beneath the canyon, abandoned. Instead of jumping off the cliff and activating his beacon, Wash goes below into the caves.
Vic is back. Season 15 got retconned, he's still alive and down there. Wash uses Vic to send a distress beacon to any remaining Freelancers, and goes back up to face the Meta one more time.
The Caboose's story about the Director and Grif and Simmons getting their ass kicked can stay. That was actually pretty good. There's no Meta vanishes for a quick moment, the fight just flows into Grif diving for the Grifshot. Simmons does that badass shotgun reload, drops the Dirty Blue line, and as the Meta grabs him, Wash arrives just in time and fights the Meta himself. Wash gets the back in black line, but he goes "Im back" and Doc gets to say "in black." Bc he's awkward like that and it feels just a smidge less forced then Caboose doing it.
Wash gets to be in the fight instead of just sitting there! He and Meta have a brief fight. Meta can use his cloak again, while Wash shows off his knife skills, but Meta eventually gets the upper hand with the sword. And THAT is when Tex shows up and hits Meta with the Warthog.
Same fight with Tex, but when she gets thrown through into Red Base, Tex immediately goes through the teleporter, gets the black soot, and dive kicks Meta. Wash and Tex both walk up to the Meta. He can make a joke about the Ice Fight, but Tex won't recognize it and be confused who he is because she's Cabooses memory. Meta mocks them, stating how he took them on before and will again. Wash corrects him. Because it's not two of them. Its three.
Carolina's dramatic entrance. Another joke where she calls Tex "mom" and she's just confused. All three of the last Freelancers take Meta on. He starts using his suit abilities and the sword, the avalanche is triggered, and the fight can just go on. But as Grif, Simmons, and Caboose watch, someone else arrives.
Admiral Delano Donut, flanked by Dr. Grey. Announcing that he got Vic's distress call (because he's on Vic's list), he arrived with Grey to get Wash and use his private UNSC frigate in orbit to MAC round the Meta for all the domestic terrorism stuff. Grif explains how Tucker is still in there, but Simmons comes up with a plan. He explains how if they've seen flashes of Tucker in the Meta, and if they can help bring him out, maybe Tucker can retake control. Donut agrees.
Meta takes out both Carolina and Wash, pins Tex, does his speech, Tex gets her moment and kicks his ass. But he's still too strong. Grif, Simmons, Caboose, and Donut surround the Meta. They do a whole "we know you're in there" schpeel, Tucker slowly begins to resurface, and Carolina and Wash help too. You can call back to past bits here, even mention Junior. As Tucker is able to wrestle control back for a moment, Donut tosses him the memory unit (Because you know. Donut is the good throw guy). Tucker stabs himself with the memory unit, absorbing the Meta, Tex, and the Church memory in Caboose's helmet. Dr Grey goes to heal Tucker, and as everything begins winding down, the unit violently shakes and a figure appears.
It's the Alpha. Alpha Church explains how since all the fragments are united, he's able to reconstitute himself, but Sigma and Omega are still fighting for control. He doesn't know how long he can hold being the Alpha before falling apart again. He says goodbye to Tucker (bc they never got to), and then asks Caboose to delete him. As reluctant as he is to do it, he admits Caboose was one of the best friends he could have had and thanks him for guiding the Epsilon unit. Wash initially tries to counter, but Caboose agrees, smashing the unit.
Wash approaches Caboose, telling him how impressed he is by his ability to let go. Instead of Carolina explaining his arc, Wash gets his own monologue where he admits to struggling with letting go of people he cares about and dealing with their memory. Doc died for him, and he has to continue living to honor his memory. It's hard, but. It's what he has to do. Dr Grey explains how Doc was killed on Chorus, and how Wash was diagnosed with hallucinations and faced immense guilt. Facing the Doc hallucination one last time, Doc forgives Wash, as do the other dead Freelancers, North getting his speech about the memories staying with him, and they fade. Carolina tells Wash she's here for him, and Wash admits he could use a break.
Tucker is fully recovered, and will be going with Donut as an emissary to Sanghelios to go see Junior (Shiela is his new shipboard AI). Vic is finally decommissioned and Lopez is installed into the Meta's empty armor, finally becoming the Lopez the Heavy he always dreamed of. Carolina tells everyone how Wash will be going to recover on Illinois's island, and how she and Grey will go with him to make sure he recovers. Hearing about the prospect of two ladies on the beach, Tucker volunteers to come with, dropping the Bow chicka bow wow (BECAUSE HE NEED IT GOD DAMN IT). He is promptly denied.
As the dropship leaves, Caboose installs Freckles into the dead Tex body. Simmons tells Grif he's free to leave, but instead, he decides to stay. This is his family now. No amount of running from his problems are going to get rid of them. This stupid canyon and this stupid team are part of him now. "I think I know why I'm here now. It's to be a lazy fatass slackoff. But I'm a RED lazy fatass slack off. And that's not going to change." He says he'll call Sister to come down and give Sarge a REAL Grif family sendoff. Then they kiss. (I did not like Grif leaving. It felt counter to his arc in the movie and really just lead to a bummer ending. Wash already covers the moving on theme).
As Caboose walks through Blood Gulch, Simmons calls him over. "Hey Caboose, you seem lonely. Why don't you come on down?" "Oh no, I can't do that." He responds. "That is Red Base. And I am a Blue. And Sarge said Blues can't be friends with Reds. Not ever." Simmons looks over to Sarge's grave, then back to Caboose. "No, I'm pretty sure Sarge changed his mind about all that. And besides. I think this whole Red and Blue thing is over now." Caboose walks over to Red Base, and all three of them look to the horizon as Donut's ship leaves, the camera panning out of Blood Gulch as the classic jingle plays one last time. Cheesy and feel good ending, with a meta comment about the end of the series. Cinema.
Yeah that's it. Tried to stick within the real story as much as possible, since I think overall it was fine, just needed fleshing out. Wash gets to be in the fight and actually faces his own guilt himself, Tuckers is able to defeat the Meta through the power of friendship, Donut shows up in a limited role for his VA, and Grif stays along. Kinda bummed I couldn't find a place for the Chorus Crew or Locus. Let me know if you liked this little exercise. I really should not have yapped this much.

2024.05.10 05:24 StonedMackin Who are your 5 favorite comedians?

I don't mean comedy actors but actual comedians. They could have acted too but their profession has to be stand up comedy. For example my some of my favorites (in no order) would be Dave Chappelle, Katt Williams, Russell Peters but the other ones are a lil more difficult, maybe Louis C.K. and Chris Rock. I don't know tho because I could also say the Lucas Bros, Bernie Mac, Redd Foxx, Adam Sandler, respects to George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Bill Burr, Bill Cosby, Ray Romano, George Lopez, Hannibal, etc. Hope everyone is doing good, wishing everyone is alive and doing healthy in your lives.

I love the people I normally work with, but the rest of the staff I honestly want to walk in like Bernie Mac in that movie, and slap the shit out of each and everyone of those nagging weirdos and lazy spoiled college students

2024.05.06 07:49 No-Gift-385 As a Pinoy Drag Race viewer, what are some lipsync songs that you started liking after listening to them in the show?

Mines so far are:
MacArthur Park by Donna Summer (Manila Luzon vs Delta Work, RPDR Season 3) - I've heard this song for the first time in the show. Manila Luzon's facial expression there is also iconic
La Gata Bajo La Lluvia by Rocío Dúrcal (Carmen Farala vs Killer Queen vs Sagittaria, DRE Season 1) - the song is a nice Spanish ballad
Fever Dreamer by SG Lewis, Charlotte Wilson, Channel Tres (Nearah Nuff vs Aimee Yonce Shennel, CDR Season 4) - love this kind of house music that I can listen to it lots of times
The Power by Ann Raniel (Captivating KatKat vs Bernie) - both queens did a great performance on this and that they interpreted the song so well
So Emotional by Whitney Houston (Sasha Velour vs Shea Coulee) - I love Whitney and both queens. Sasha's reveal is also so memorable in here

2024.05.05 17:51 thinkingstranger May 3, 2024

It has been quite a week of news, and I’m willing to bet I’m not the only one who’s tired. So I figure it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world to look elsewhere for a bit of a break. Tomorrow is the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby, and in its honor, I'm posting a piece my friend Michael S. Green and I wrote together a number of years ago on Ten Famous American Horses. It has no deep meaning...it’s just fun. And it was totally fun to research, too: I watched hours and hours of Mr. Ed and read television history to try to figure out what made it such a popular show. This remains one of my favorite things I ever had a hand in writing.
1) Traveller
General Robert E. Lee rode Traveller (spelled with two Ls, in the British style) from February 1862 until the general’s death in 1870. Traveller was a grey American Saddlebred of 16 hands. He had great endurance for long marches, and was generally unflappable in battle, although he once broke both of General Lee’s hands when he shied at enemy movements. Lee brought Traveller with him when he assumed the presidency of Washington and Lee University. Traveller died of tetanus in 1871. He is buried on campus, where the safe ride program still uses his name.
2) Comanche
Comanche was attached to General Custer’s detachment of the 7th Cavalry when it engaged the Lakota in 1876 at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The troops in the detachment were all killed in the engagement, but soldiers found Comanche, badly wounded, two days later. They nursed him back to health, and he became the 7th Cavalry’s mascot. The commanding officer decreed that the horse would never again be ridden and that he would always be paraded, draped in black, in all military ceremonies involving the 7th Cavalry. When Comanche died of colic in 1891, he was given a full military funeral (the only other horse so honored was Black Jack, who served in more than a thousand military funerals in the 1950s and 1960s). Comanche’s taxidermied body is preserved in the Natural History Museum at the University Of Kansas.
3) Beautiful Jim Key
Beautiful Jim Key was a performing horse trained by formerly enslaved veterinarian Dr. William Key. Key demonstrated how Beautiful Jim could read, write, do math, tell time, spell, sort mail, and recite the Bible. Beautiful Jim performed from 1897 to 1906 and became a legend. An estimated ten million Americans saw him perform, and others collected his memorabilia—buttons, photos, and postcards—or danced the Beautiful Jim Key two-step. Dr. Key insisted that he had taught Beautiful Jim using only kindness, and Beautiful Jim Key’s popularity was important in preventing cruelty to animals in America, with more than 2 million children signing the Jim Key Band of Mercy, in which they pledged: “I promise always to be kind to animals.”
4) Man o’ War
Named for his owner, August Belmont, Jr., who was overseas in World War I, Man o’ War is widely regarded as the top Thoroughbred racehorse of all time. He won 20 of his 21 races and almost a quarter of a million dollars in the early twentieth century. His one loss—to “Upset”—came after a bad start. Man o’ War sired many of America’s famous racehorses, including Hard Tack, which in turn sired Seabiscuit, the small horse that came to symbolize hope during the Great Depression.
5) Trigger
Entertainer Roy Rogers chose the palomino Trigger from five rented horses to be his mount in a Western film in the 1930s, changing his name from Golden Cloud to Trigger because of his quick mind and feet. Rogers rode Trigger in his 1950s television series, making the horse a household name. When Trigger died, Rogers had his skin draped over a Styrofoam mold and displayed it in the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in California. He also had a 24-foot statue of Trigger made from steel and fiberglass. One other copy of that mold was also made: it is “Bucky the Bronco,” which rears above the Denver Broncos stadium south scoreboard.
6) Sergeant Reckless
American Marines in Korea bought a mare in October 1952 from a Korean stable boy who needed the money to buy an artificial leg for his sister, who had stepped on a land mine. The marines named her Reckless after their unit’s nickname, the Reckless Rifles. They made a pet of her and trained her to carry supplies and to evacuate wounded. She learned to travel supply routes without a guide: on one notable day she made 51 solo trips. Wounded twice, she was given a battlefield rank of corporal in 1953 and promoted to sergeant after the war, when she was also awarded two Purple Hearts and a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.
7) Mr. Ed
Mr. Ed was a talking palomino in a 1960s television show by the same name. At a time when Westerns dominated American television, Mr. Ed was the anti-Western, with the main human character a klutzy architect and the hero a horse that was fond of his meals and his comfortable life, and spoke with the voice of Allan “Rocky” Lane, who made dozens of “B” westerns. But the show was a five-year hit as it married the past to the future. Mr. Ed offered a gentle, homely wisdom that enabled him to straighten out the troubles of the humans around him. The startling special effects that made it appear that the horse was talking melded modern technology with the comforting traditional community depicted in the show.
8) Black Jack
Black Jack, named for John J. “Black Jack” Pershing, was the riderless black horse in the funerals of John F. Kennedy, Herbert Hoover, Lyndon Johnson, and Douglas MacArthur, as well as more than a thousand other funerals with full military honors. A riderless horse, with boots reversed in the stirrups, symbolized a fallen leader, while Black Jack’s brands—a U.S. brand and an army serial number—recalled the army’s history. Black Jack himself was buried with full military honors; the only other horse honored with a military funeral was Comanche.
9) Khartoum
Khartoum was the prize stud horse of Jack Woltz, the fictional Hollywood mogul in Mario Puzo’s The Godfather. In one of the film version’s most famous scenes, after Woltz refuses requests from Don Vito Corleone to cast singer Johnny Fontane in a movie, Woltz wakes up to find Khartoum’s head in bed with him… and agrees to use Fontane in the film. In the novel, Fontane wins the Academy Award for his performance. According to old Hollywood rumor, the story referred to real events. The rumor was that mobsters persuaded Columbia Pictures executive Harry Cohn to cast Frank Sinatra in From Here to Eternity. As Maggio, Sinatra revived his sagging film career and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
10) Secretariat
Secretariat was an American Thoroughbred that in 1973 became the first U.S. Triple Crown winner in 25 years. His records in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes still stand. After Secretariat was stricken with a painful infection and euthanized in 1989, an autopsy revealed that he had an unusually big heart. Sportswriter Red Smith once asked his trainer how Secretariat had run one morning; Charlie Hatton replied, “The trees swayed.”

Newly Added to The Criterion Channel: May 2024 - 1999: The Best Movie Year Ever?
Criterion has released the full May 2024 lineup for The Criterion Channel.
Was 1999 the best movie year ever? This book thinks so, and now there's a collection on the Channel dedicated to this landmark year.

1999 on The Criterion Channel

  • Beau Travail (1999)
  • Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
  • Buena Vista Social Club (1999)
  • Bye Bye Africa (1999), Following (1999)
  • Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)
  • Girl, Interrupted (1999)
  • Go (1999)
  • The Insider (1999)
  • The Limey (1999)
  • Ratcatcher (1999)
  • The Straight Story (1999)
  • Summer of Sam (1999)
  • Trick (1999)
  • The Virgin Suicides (1999)
But 1999 isn't the only year represented on the Channel in May.
My personal recommendations:
  • Amélie (2001)
I've long called "Amelie" a gateway to foreign films for the uninitiated or reluctant. Recommend this to them and watch their world open up.
  • Bernie (2011)
One of Richard Linklater's most underrated, clever, and entertaining films. What happens here is so outrageous that it has to be based on a true story.
  • Uptight (1968)
A searing but strange look at American race relations - from legendary noir director Jules Dassin.
Previously mentioned on this sub:
Caught my eye:
  • Being There (1979)
  • Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
  • In Cold Blood (1967)
  • A Little Romance (1979)
You can check out the complete list of other March 2024 collections on Criterion.com.

Search in Manorville could mean something bigger
https://abcnews.go.com/US/new-search-underway-tied-gilgo-beach-murder-investigation/story?id=109581649
This really makes me believe that Rex could be responsible for more of the bodies found alongside Ocean Parkway. I really don’t think there are two killers as most people on here would believe, and I think this could prove it.
Rex Heuermann has been charged with the murders of Amber Lynn Costello, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Megan Waterman as I’m sure everyone in this subreddit probably knows and would agree he is most likely guilty as there is a heap load of evidence against him, but there were so many other bodies found on this stretch of land and a few of them were escorts just like the Gilgo 4.
Both Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor were working as escorts when they were murdered, and both bodies were found deceased in a similar manner and dumped in Manorville AND Gilgo beach. Yes, there’s a different modus operandi from the Gilgo 4 but the fact that SCPD is searching these areas right now in connection to the LISK really makes me think they’ve found something in connection to Rex. He’s currently in custody and is most likely guilty for the Gilgo 4, so I would think they’re going to try and connect him to the other victims such as Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor before pointing fingers at someone else. They need to rule him out first, if anything. It is also not unlikely that Heuermann committed these murders, as Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor fit into Rex’s “type”, petite women with Mack standing at 5’ and Taylor at 5’3. Heuermann also would’ve been around 35 at the time of their murders so it’s not far fetched to say he could’ve been killing for many years before the Gilgo 4. The fact that all of the victims were essentially lined up across the same stretch of land, and the newer bodies were no longer being dismembered, could have been a sign that the killer was getting too relaxed and wasn’t too worried about where they were dropping the bodies and IF Heuermann committed most if not all of the victims, it lines up with the timing and manners of each body found. So let’s go back and talk about the earliest potential victim of Heuermann, Karen Vergata.
Karen Vergata was just recently identified this past summer and this was a HUGE breakthrough for this case. Her identity was revealed shortly after Heuermann was arrested, however he was not claimed to be a suspect.
Vergata’s legs were discovered in Davis Park on Fire Island, which is close but technically on a different island than Gilgo Beach and Tobay Beach, which is where her skull was found.
Vergata was last seen around Valentine’s Day 1996 and her remains were discovered later that year in David Park.
The only evidence I have for Vergata being a victim of Heuermann is the fact that she was also an escort who found herself in very similar situations to other victims. She needed quick money to support herself and her lifestyle and was desperate to do so, much like the Gilgo 4. I couldn’t find anything about her height, but if she was on the shorter side that could be an argument as well. But most importantly what persuaded me was this affidavit.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wq_AFpVrYSuw4sQcljJdhpy1WfLcZ-Qy/view?usp=drivesdk
If you’re interested in this case and you haven’t read this, you should. It’s extremely compelling and seems to me to be pretty detailed oriented. Of course, we do not know how much of this is true or correctly remembered, as this was over 20 years ago. But if what this person says is true, then Karen Vergata was undoubtedly a victim of Heuermann. This also leads us to believe that maybe Asa knew what was going on to a certain extent. Maybe she didn’t know that her husband was extremely violent, but she knew he used sex workers and they hosted “swinger parties”. If this were true, then that could suggest that Asa had low self-esteem due to her husband sleeping with other women but was just happy to have a husband who provided, or she didn’t care. But being an immigrant from Iceland, she could be easily manipulated by Heuermann as maybe English wasn’t her first language, and listened to him because she knew and trusted him. But I think it would make perfect sense for Heuermann to claim that everything she has had been given to her from him, which could hint at a narcissistic personality, like Ted Bundy. This affidavit would also hint at the fact that Heuermann had homosexual tendencies, which leads me to bring up John Doe, who was found near the Gilgo 4.
John Doe is an unidentified victim who was described as an Asian man between the ages of 17-23, 5’6, and dressed in women’s clothing. It is assumed they died 5-10 years before they were discovered. If what this affidavit says is true and Heuermann was potentially attracted to men, the possibility of John Doe being a victim of Heuermann is also not far fetched, at all. Heuermann’s internet searches would back up this claim as well:
“Twink” is defined as a young, attractive, usually slim gay man.
The fact that Heuermann was searching for an “asian Twink” makes it even more uncanny, I think. Some people theorize that John Doe was trans because they were found wearing women’s clothing, however John Doe could’ve been an escort who identified as a man but was under the request to wear women’s clothing by Heuermann, who seemed to be more interested in women.
Now lets look at the timeline of all the victims in comparison to the map I made (because I don’t like the ones on google):
Potential and confirmed LISK victims chronological order:
First victim: Karen Vergata - Dismembered - Legs found on Davis Island in 1996 - Skull found on Tobay Beach in 2011
Second victim: Peaches - Dismembered - Torso discovered in a trash bin near Hempstead Lake Park in 1997 - Remains found near Jones Beach in plastic bag in 2011
Third Victim: Peaches baby - Skeletal remains found on Gilgo Beach near Valerie MacK - No sign of trauma
Fourth victim: Valerie Mack - Dismembered - Torso discovered in Manorville in 2000 - Head, hands, right foot found on Gilgo Beach in 2011
Fifth Victim: Jessica Taylor - Dismembered - Torso discovered in Manorville in 2003 - Skull, pair of hands, and a forearm discovered on Gilgo Beach in 2011
Sixth Victim: John Doe (Asian Male) - Blunt force trauma - First non-dismembered victim besides Peaches baby - Earliest time of the death could have been 2000-2005
Seventh and Eigth victims: Maureen Brainard-Barnes and Melissa Barthelemy - Maureen Brainard Barnes disappeared in 2007 - Melissa Barthelemy’s body disappeared in 2009 - Both found in 2010 - Both reportedly died to strangulation
Ninth victim: Shannan Gilbert - Disappeared in 2010 - SCPD wrote off her death as drowning, but autopsy says death in “inconclusive” - Discovered in 2011 in a marsh
Tenth Victim: Megan Waterman - Disappeared in 2010 - Found in 2011 - Reportedly died to strangulation
Eleventh Victim: Amber Lynn Costello - Disappeared in 2010 - Found in 2011 - Reportedly died to strangulation
I know I didn’t really get into Peaches and Peaches baby, but I don’t have enough evidence to link them to Heuermann besides that he lives 20 minutes away from where her torso was found, and she was dismembered during this hypothetical era where Heuermann would dismember and scatter his victims. The 4 first potential LISK victims were all dismembered excluding Peaches Baby and John Doe, but we don’t know when exactly John Doe was murdered. If Heuermann did commit these crimes, maybe Peaches Baby wasn’t dismembered because she was a toddler, perhaps there was hesitation due to their age or they didn’t feel the need because of how young they were. It wasn’t until after John Doe that Heuermann probably started getting comfortable after not being caught for so many years, and stopped dismembering the bodies and just dumping them in this remote area where nobody had ever caught him. I just find it interesting that if you follow the timeline of the murders, there IS some sort of pattern.
I also know I didn’t really talk about Shannan Gilbert because I feel there is also a lack of evidence. However I do have a theory. But let me start off by saying that to everyone who thinks that Shannan drowned, I truly think you’re mistaken. I mean just read the autopsy report! No abuse of drugs were found, she was found facing up (which is uncommon in drowning victims) and also CLEARLY states that the findings are consistent with homicidal strangulation, and clearly states that there is no evidence of drowning. So, Shannan (also an escort) makes a panicked call to 911 from a town awfully close to Gilgo Beach while at a clients house, pleading with the 911 officer to send help because somebody is after her, she’s going to be killed. Shannans body is found in the marsh with a missing larynx and a fractured thyroid bone and SCPD points to drowning. SCPD wrote off her death so easily and everyone believed it because of her 911 call (not like the receiver was being helpful at all, though). But I believe that Shannan really did have someone after her. Just because she was hysterical does not mean she was on drugs, I mean I would be hysterical if I knew someone was after me in this isolated town out in the middle of nowhere. Shannan also suffered from BPD, which could explain her “odd” behavior. I find it even more suspicious that her idiot driver left without her, like why on earth would he ever leave her in a state like that? Was he not concerned at all by what she was saying? I have so many questions.
Wrapping all of this up now. IF SCPD is searching Manorville right now in connection to Heuermann and they find something, or if he really was connected or responsible for Valerie Mack and Jessica Taylor, this now opens the doors to many possibilities for this case. This would prove that Heuermann had a different modus operandi in the early 2000s, and who knows how many times this could’ve been changed in between then and now, maybe when he was even younger. This also would prove that dismemberment was something that Heuermann would have had experience in, and could be considered responsible for Karen Vergata and Peaches who were dismembered in and dumped in a similar fashion. And if Heuermann could be considered for those murders, John Doe, who was found in the same cluster of bodies, could have also been a victim, and Heuermanns search history could support that.
I’ve been very invested with the LISK since Heuermann was arrested and I really hope he suffers for what he did. He potentially took the lives of so many young women who were just trying to support themselves. Women with hopes, dreams, lives, families, and a purpose. As a young woman from Long Island, I want justice for all of the women whose lives were taken from them for the pleasure of a sick man who didn’t care for life. He needs to answer for his crimes and give these families and these women closure. They were more than just escorts, they were people. They were a mother’s and daughters.
Sorry if this is disorganized, this case has been my hyper fixation for almost a year now and getting more information is truly exciting and I needed to thought vomit my theories. We’re so close to unveiling the truth!

2024.04.24 23:08 midnightmitchell2019 What is happening to this show?

It feels like there’s been heavy criticism of it for months now across most social media platforms, ratings have been falling, and yet there’s been no changes onscreen. If anything things have got so much worse.
Anyone that has been a long time Corrie fan can back up this statement: Corrie was always about the characters and dynamics. The lifeblood of the show was its ability to make the most out of someone needing to buy milk from a corner shop or getting a pint after a long day.
Of course, this isn’t the 1970s anymore and shows have to be more exciting and elaborate, but even going to more recent successes like Bethany’s Grooming or Aidan’s Suicide, the show was heavily focused on proper onscreen developments, small, subtle character work, and the tragedy and uplifting nature of interpersonal dynamics.
Hillman was a psychopathic serial killer and even then the show stayed true to itself by ensuring the majority of his scenes were at home, with the Platts, having tea, and building up the family image.
How is it that this show – a show that has so effortlessly weaved together real-life issues and horror with compassionate character relationships – a show that now needs to go so far as to take what many viewers have seen onscreen and claim that viewers saw it wrong? How can any producer look at what they’re doing with Toyah, and actually claim they’re representing Coronation Street? How is MacLeod storylining a narrative that relies on gaslighting viewers into believing that everything they saw onscreen after Toyah’s rape didn’t happen the way it was depicted?
Why is a show that was seen as the gold standard of soaps reduced to using cheap tactics for stories and in need of creating shockingly disgusting retcons to push itself forward? What does giving Toyah a baby with her rapist, a child loss, and the burial even do for her?
How is this soap that, Whodunnit element aside, once gave such a powerful depiction of the tragedy of rape in Toyah’s original storyline now doing this? Better yet, how is this show that presented Toyah or Bethany’s storyline doing Lauren’s? Think of the real harrowing elements of Toyah’s rape and Bethany’s grooming, then consider that Lauren’s story has consisted of sporadic phone calls…and that’s it.
Toyah crying into Janice’s arms, and Bethany sitting on a bed while grown men pour into her room; that’s actually showing the troubling and disturbing elements of these topics. ITV claiming this is “Lauren’s Grooming” and showcasing it in one sided phone calls is immature and less expressive than even a story from a GSCE English student.
How can this show be spoken about in Parliament with Free the Weatherfield One, then do a parody of this with Roy that is illogical on even the simplest of basis? (No question of whether or not he has an alibi? Really?)
How is this the soap that gave heartbreaking performances in Alma’s cancer, now treating Paul’s MND so flippantly and delivering multiple different random subplots to pad it out (What happened to Joseph’s LYME? Does he still have it? Why was Bernie in prison for three weeks? What was the point of Gemma being investigated by the Social, being out the house, then just going back into the house?)
Where's the emotional impact of any of these stories? Where's the weight? The reality? The heart? The love? The relatabiliy? The connection. The purpose?
How in the hell is this Coronation Street?

2024.04.19 02:40 shawnwar4586 Make the case for your guy to win the Hart.

This is probably the tightest Hart race in recent memory, so let’s hear why your guy deserves it. Remember the award is for the most valuable player to his team in the NHL. Or at least that’s supposed to be the criteria. I'm a bolts fan so Kuch is my guy and here's his case:
(I was compiling these achievements and the Lightning had an article that laid them out better than me, so the first part is copy pasta)
Notable Achievements this season:
(End copy pasta)
When you add that all up its hard to argue that anyone was more important to their team’s success than Kuch. There is just simply no way the lightning is a playoff team without him this season. Just the fact he factored in on 50% of our goals is insane! If that stat alone doesn't prove it than I don't know what does?
Now I know the knock will be his defense and the empty net points. It’s easy to just look at his +/- at a pedantic +8 and wonder how with so many points. But when you look at the team stats, he’s 2nd on the team in +/- behind Hedman. (Tied with perbix) So I think that says more about the team's defensive prowess than Kuch's. As for the empty net points you could argue that coop trusted him enough to be on the ice in important situations during close games. He did continually contribute to closing those games out too. Again, both those points further the case for him being the most valuable player to his team this season.
That’s my case for the NHL's second favorite heel. (Marchand will always be #1)
So, make the case for your guy!

2024.04.17 23:48 MoBBuck50 Love this game!

Love this game!
Started back in the end of December and I truly love this game, and this was the first time I hit a real jack pot, and my heart is still pumping 45 minutes later.
Today's just a normal day just chilling and looting with the boys and hadnt seen anyone or heard shots for hours. Everyone logs out except for me and one other and we decided to look for some action before I had to get my kids. We do a normal scot run looking for people and ran through all tisy, and at this point I have 15 minutes left before I had to go, and 10 minutes before server restart. We then hear a heli crash just south of tents in the open field out side the tisy tress, so I am like "fuck it" wanted to be like fuck them kids like Bernie Mac lol.
We push up then down the tall hill south east of tents and spot a mushroom, and my buddy is full tilt ready to go, so I decided to stay back 50-100 meters and scott for him. Maybe 1 minute has past, and I spot someone running near where I last seen my buddy and asked him if he was running and he said no. I told him someone is close and I dont have a clean shot, so I figure let my manz commando him at close range. He does get the drop on him with my coms and KOS him, and he decided to just quickly loot the body, I tell him I will hang back up the hill and see if has a buddy coming from the same direction he came. While I am hanging back my buddy is like "damn a AKM and a DMR" and in my head I like "lucky bastard", but I gave great coms so in my head I will atleast get the DMR.
Then I hear shots coming from towards where the heli crash is and my friend goes down, and that was not where that poor sap came from ealier, so my best guess is it was a thrid party.
My friend is panicking being knocked and tells me to push, but I am 50-100 meters back and no clear sight of him or the shooter, and he got finished a few seconds after.
At this point I have about 7 minutes before I have to get my kids and a server restart Is 2 minutes away. I ask my friend where he died and he said by the hay bails outside the tree line. I push up about 30 meters from the hail bails and and just wait. I know this guys isnt about to leave this shit behind, so I figure patience is the key and he will pop his head out.
Now I completely forget about the server restart, and my alarm goes off to get my kids and I know I have maybe a grey window of 8 minutes to get them which the bus lady usally does get there but like to ideally get there ealry.
My buddy logs out at this point thinking it is hopeless to get this asshole and honesty so do I with the time restraint.
Well after about 30 seconds after loging back in I see the pencil dick fuck stick his head out. I mowed his ass down with the LAR full auto and my heart is racing because I am not sure he is alone and normally I would hold tight in a typically situation and see if I spot anyone first. I go and immediately drop all my trash loot and prepare to grab what I can, and for those who play on PS4 with two gutted players on top of each of, it is hard as fuck to navigate through all the loot.
I managed to get my buddy's 101 back and pull off two DMRs and a AKM with NVGs and all the other common goodies like gun kits, and duct tape and ammo I can get in my bag and the bag I am holding.
Then I rush to the bus stop and get my kids on time which was fucking clutch af, and I feel on top of the world right now!!!
I need some whiskey, and watch TPB to finish off this night, and hopefully... some ass from the misses, who doesn't give two fucks about this lmao.
