Hi all
Looking for some travel tips as our family will be traveling to Seoul at the end of August before heading to China.
We'll be in Seoul from the 24-30.
Our child will be around 9 months old, and we were only planning on bringing the stroller with us (it's an Uppababy Vista). Not sure if we should also bring his car seat. In regards to getting around, we were thinking of just getting an Ubehiring a driver to get to the little areas we wanted to check out as my MIL does not want to take the public transit at all. I've tried to convince her that the transit is safe, but she's been too wary about it (it's not a battle I would like to choose with my MIL).
We're planning on staying at the Conrad Seoul as it's one of the few that has the requirements for my MIL (she wants all of us to stay together in the room or a place with adjoining rooms).
Our rough itinerary current looks like this:
24 - grab a quick bite around the hotel and check out Hyundai Seoul / settle in to our hotel
25 - Dongdaemin Design Plaza / meat market or the seafood market
26 - Bukchon Hanok Village and maybe one or 2 of the palaces / Myeondong towards the evening/night
27 - Seoul Tower / Itaewon area
28 - Hongdae area
29 - Gangnam area
30 - explore near the hotel again, pack up, and head to the airport early
With our son being so young, we've decided not to go to Lotte World since he won't remember much.
Does anyone have any recommendations of little communities that we should definitely check out? My friends told me to check out places near the different universities for different vibes.
Does anyone have recommendations for private drivers? I know Uber works there (it calls some sort of taxi that's affiliated, which works for us). Do you know if we need to bring our car seat for the taxis?
Do you think we should purchase a travel stroller vs bringing our current one due to size?
Does anyone have any recommendations for other hotels with adjoining rooms or large enough to fit 2 double beds? I've tried to search and the very few that popped up with adjoining rooms were all sold out or I've emailed the hotel directly and they've advised that they don't have adjoining rooms (contrary to what it states on Google reviews/Tripadvisor).
Does anyone have tips for buying baby food/diapers? Should we just pick them up at a 711 or would it be better to stop by a grocery store?

This may be a lengthy post so apologies in advance, just want to provide all the information.
My husband and I currently have 200,000 sitting in our chequing account from the sale of our home. We both have maxed out TFSAs invested with CIBC imperial investor service, $8,900 RESP for our toddler also cibc invested, and RRSPs 66k and 45k each also CIBC.
We own a rental bungalow free and clear and currently live in my parents home while they are traveling. The plan will be for my parents to move to our bungalow in a couple years and they will sign their home over to us when the mortgage comes up for renewal at the end of 2025 (200k owing at 1.5%)
We will also be receiving an additional 150,000 from my husband's parents as a very generous belated wedding gift.
I feel like this is a stupid amount of money that we have been very fortunate to come into in such a short time and neither of us really knows what to do now that our tfsas are maxed out.
We don't have an "emergency fund" but I have an ~8k account for our rental property where all rent comes in and expenses come out and I haven't really touched it. We also have 12k in our joint account where our mortgage payments used to come out of. My husband's annual income is ~160k and I am currently making ~45k from my home business as a SAHM but may go back to work in the next few years.
No debt other than my ~5k student loan that is currently interest free.
Here are my questions:
Should we have a more formal emergency fund?
Is there a better place to invest besides just the standard bank investment services?
How can we use this money to begin to set ourselves up for retirement?
Any tips to avoid lifestyle creep? our cards are around 7k/month lately which doesn't feel sustainable. even though a lot of our expenses are "one time" costs like new wheels for the car, home insurace, furnace replacement etc.
Any other advice is welcome!

We were returning from downtown Tampa yesterday (5/12) around 11:30 and several lanes of the northbound vets were closed with a bunch of sheriffs cars on site. Looking back as we passed my wife saw a man with a bloodied head splayed out behind a barricade. There was a silver SUV/van parked there which looked to have no damage. Driving my son to the airport an hour or so later there was a white sheet presumably over the body. Can’t find any news anywhere. Anyone else see anything?

I’m currently in Ireland and really enjoying it so far! I’ve been following a rough itinerary but not sure about 2 of my days (I don’t have a rental car, relying on public transportation):
Day 1-2 Dublin (didn’t do much on day 1 because of a tiring flight/adjusting to the time difference)
Day 3 Galway
Day 4 day trip to Aran Islands/Inishmore
Day 5 day trip to Cliffs of Moher
Day 6 and 7 ?
Day 8 back to Dublin - Kilmainham gaol, Phoenix Park, Guinness on the rooftop of the Storehouse
Day 9 flight home in the early afternoon
My current thoughts for day 6/7 are to take the bus from Galway to Westport and hike Croagh Patrick. If not Westport, maybe doing 2 of the following 3: stay an extra day in Galway to see Connemara National Park; stop in Kilkenny for a day to see the castle plus Smithwick’s tour (I’d really love to see a big castle); head back to Dublin a day early and do a day trip to Howth + cliff walks. Or something else entirely?

I’m looking to book a rental car at Geneva airport and I’m planning to go straight from the airport to Chamonix and then on the way back via Annecy before dropping the car back at the airport.
Does anyone know whether I should rent this from the Swiss side of the French side of the airport. Seen quite a few differing opinions online so far.

Married 19 years, together for 25; two teenage children with severe emotional problems coming out of the pandemic.
D-Day was 16 months ago, the night before Thanksgiving. AP was literally an alcoholic unemployed late 40-something living in his mom's basement. They had met at a funeral she hadn't bothered to ask me to go because I wasn't leaving the bed in those days and I'd have said no. The night I discovered his clingy, mooning texts lamenting their inability to spend the holiday together, my life - already a terrible, depressive, lonely black hole of a mess and following the sudden, unnecessary death of a parent on Christmas Day - just imploded.
Upon confrontation after Thanksgiving dinner, the response was the worst in all ways possible. WW was high on limerence, and was fiercely unapologetic. She didn't want to separate but demanded an open marriage. She 'deserved to be happy', and felt good about her having told this unplanned encounter that went from EA to PA in 72 hours that she'd never leave me.
She had eschewed having intimacy for years before this. We had been poor to each other over the years, but I fell off a cliff after our kids faded from the world and my parent died. She was legit shocked and belligerent when I refused, and said that if you pursue this I will have to leave.
We made some temporary agreements (ones she did not keep), and started seeing a counselor. I started IC for the first time in my middle-aged life. We were however 'not aligned', as she'd say. She didnt want to give up her boyfriend, and I refused to stay if he was in the picture. I cringe to think back to how I said, 'you can maintain a friendship if you absolutely must but you must reinvest back into working on our relationship'.
This was a no-go for her for a while. She'd meet him. He'd sleep in her place of business. SHe lent him our car. (He crashed it while drunk, btw.) There was a moment when I had the kids in Puerto Rico, and she returned early for a funeral, and she went to the funeral with him and probably had sex after. Meanwhile I was stuck in an airport, trying to get home after a cancelled flight and just threw lots of money at the problem to curtail the time she had with him. She had in the three month relationship began introducing him to family friends, people who knew me.
With someone living a state away, she somehow managed to squeeze in more sex in 3 months than we'd had together in 10 years. In my mind, she was working on replacing me with AP but didn't want to separate for the sake of our kids.
Come January, she claimed to have decided to break things off. I didn't really believe her. I made a surprise visit to her place of business on a weekend, and found him there asleep on the couch with no pants on.
We had words, and despite being beside myself with rage and grief I was able to take his measure. In many ways, I wish I had met him right after D-Day. It was clear he was a narcissistic dumpster fire with pretensions of intellectuality. There were signs of some bipolar behavior. He made clear his intentions was to stay, and to convince WW to leave me. And he still had our car, and keys to her business site. (We live in a large city and don't need multiple vehicles, or even the one car if I'm honest.)
She realized where I was going due to my phone location and ran after me, but got there after I had 15 minutes with the joker. She asked him to leave, but still let him keep our car. She had no words, which has been a theme throughout our marriage. She can't easily access her feelings or articulate them, and she's afraid to express them for fear of my response. I told her after having met him, noted his instability and his intentions, i said I can no longer accept any contact between them. She reluctantly agreed.
From mid-January through to August followed a sequence of false representation of wanting to work on reconciliation and cycles of lying about not having contact. She was in love with him, she claimed, but seemed to go cold turkey overnight. She neither engaged with me nor took steps to reconcile, but claimed how difficult it was and that she was working on our relationship.
We quit the MC we started to see. We eventually found another several months later. We're still with the 2nd MC. In the meantime began a kind of surreal hellscape life for me, as she would say the barest of minimum things, and usually nothing at all about where she was, how she felt, and what was she willing to do to rebuild our relationship. She took no steps to reassure me, or show she wants me. She would say she did, but simultaneously be cold, distant, and - as i soon discovered - was still in contact with AP.
He gave her a burner phone. I found it within 2 days and threw the brand new phone into the river. Cheaters really need to not let unknown devices onto the home wifi networks of the technically literate. We had it out again, she promised to really try. A few weeks later I found unusual call patterns in our cell account. AP had provisioned a new phone number. Following that blow up was the WhatsApp phase, which really began to take the wind out of my sails.
She expressed no remorse. She was resentful of my 'intrusions into her privacy'. She genuinely thought it would be comforting to hear that the affair had nothing to do with me. She would be visibly annoyed when I asked for confirmations there had been no new contact - and even more so when in retrospect when there had been.
There were at least five discrete cycles of deception. AP escalated by getting five phone numbers and cycling through them. Towards the end, she had hid these numbers as secondary numbers of people they knew in common but didn't regularly have contact with. AP would write texts from the perspective of different personae.
Then there were the people who knew, and of those there were people who fully supported her behavior. There were people who aided and abetted it, lending her their apartments, or hoping she finds some comfort. One particularly egregious one, early on, tried to convince Amanda to really try to convince me to find someone else to be happy in an open arrangement. She's still in regular contact with this person.
The culmination of the PA/EA with the AP happened last summer. He eventually returned the car, but only after he had reclaimed it from the police impound lot. He did not pay for the repairs. Or his tolls when coming to and fro to fuck my WW. I did.
I had been fairly successful in identifying his phone numbers and having them blocked at the carrier level with some gaps in time, and diverting his email and voicemail. During ths period where all his means of contact were being closed soon after being opened, he was starting to rage and unstable. WW upon the latest confrontation (i was pretty calm and matter of fact about it) admitted she could not control her behavior, and didn't understand why she was doing it.
AP was a controlling person, with hints of WW's clinically narcissist parent. He wrote a letter and entered her business after hours to leave it. Because he wrote an email saying he was doing this, I ill-advisedly went there to call the police on him. I didn't find him, but I did find the letter. He knew I had been there - either he had been outside or he went back after I left - and complained bitterly about my interference.
His only means of influence had dropped to emails, and he just kept pounding with the short, imperative statements that described outcomes favorable to him. He had started to convince her that I was a threat to her, and trying to convince her I was a threat to our children (for whom I'd die in fire every day).
His tactical error was trying to play up his inability to contact her as a screen for concern. He tried to get the cops to perform a wellness check. He called WW's sister to convince her I was a threat, and that WW was in danger. (She told him off.)
Finally, he threatened to show up at our door with friends and 'free' her. I knew he owned a shotgun; while I didn't actually think he would show up (he had made smaller-scale threats of this kind before and I only realized they had happened days after his 'deadlines'.) I shared this new development with WW. We had agreed to handle it together. However, while I was out one day, she went to her sister's and called him to tell him she was fine but to never call or contact anyone in our family again. It was a muted, brief exchange. I was angry she hadn't stuck to our agreement.
Since then, he's only made a handful of contact attempts soon after the break that really were more for insulting me. I believe on an intellectual level they have had no contact since last summer. I emotionally continue to not feel safe about her intentions.
Since then, it's been difficult. There have been very limited conversation coming from her outside of the MC sessions, and those have trended light on her content. Very recently, she's expressed more. But it's still seemingly grounded in some unhealthy premises. Amongst them:

1. She at one pointed expressed she regretted the pain she caused, but doesn't regret the experience because (I kid you not) 'she learned so much about herself' and 'many positive elements have come out of it'. (I lost 50 pounds in the first three months post-Dday, and lately I've been hovering around 70. I did have it to lose, having used food to soothe myself over the decade of gaslighting and lack of explanation for her disengagement, and unwillingness to work on it.)
2. She continues to resent my intrusion into her phone call history. She disagrees with the oft-raised best practice of open-phone/account policies. Her feelings around her lack of privacy unsettle her, and get in the way of engaging (she says).
3. she doesn't see the value in 'forcing closeness'
4. she keeps wanting me to 'ratchet it down a notch', but it's not clear what she thinks that means
5. she finds my sadness and pain to be an impediment to rebuilding closeness
6. She claims to have read content about rebuilding marriages after infidelity, but to my knowledge she's done hardly anything to rebuild trust. I said it'd be better if you hadn't read it, because to think that you're walking around having read it but still don't do anything feels worse.
7. She has not taken lead in the reconciliation process, or really done much except endure my periodic/every-2-weeks or so expressions of disappointment and hurt and anger

I'm sure no one has read this far. This is my dilemma. What I'm trying to do here is leave no stone unturned in my efforts to save our marriage. I want to sleep well at night, and I won't be able to do that in a healthy way without going through this.
Yesterday wa the first time she said that he was responsible for destroying my world and my brain, several times over, with the elaborate deceptions (as I'm prone to describing it). I welcomed it and thanked her. But it was only precipitated by a conflict we were having about a mistake I made, where I rubbed her face in my phone snooping by adding unflattering profile pictures to the blocked contacts for the AP. (If they're not there, he could still call her and leave a voicemail when she's on wifi.)
She has had low to middling chronic health issues since April of last year, following her second round with COVID. And if it's not her, it's her parents. Or my surviving parent. Or my brother almost dying. Or the DOL is threatening to reclassify all her contractors as employees. (They should.) Everything just magically seemed to be prioritized over her talking to me.
It's literally, literally been something every other week. She's always tired, always in pain, and I really try hard to stay empathic about it. To hold a space for her. I have taken care of her when she's ill all throughout this horrible time. And she's really appreciative of how well I've supported and cared for her with no promise or signs of reciprocation.
But she still won't have sex with me, and wont talk to me about why she flinches sometimes when I touch her. Or worse, she fakes interest and then I find out otherwise later. Clearly, we have trauma to work through from before the affair. She's not intentionally being cruel. I've expressed remorse over what little she has hinted at, and want to make amends. I love her so much. It's always been my intent to die married to her, and hold our family together.
But it's getting harder to hold onto that empathy. I'm just so tired of feeling hurt, of not having my needs met, and feeling so deeply disrespected in this low-contrition (but maybe trending up) context we're living through.
She seems to evoke a sense in me that everytime I am hurt or express anger, her willingness or energy resets to near zero. Which in and of itself is newly infuriating!
My dilemma is that part of my tenacity in this ridiculous situation that saints would have left three times over already is tied to the idea that by sticking with it and not making it 'easier' for her I'm upholding my self-respect.
But am i? Am I just punishing her by saying I can't let go of my pain until she demonstrates remorse and effort? Being married, a husband and a father of simple small family is a big part of my identity.
It all went to shit a long time ago, but I never checked out. I just didn't understand what was happening, how a wife could treat their partner this way, and I didn't have the maturity or the emotional language to navigate it alone. So I grew resentful and depressed, and just low-level angry all the time. While she would just smile, and say nothing. In public, she'd be affectionate.
In private, it'd be back turned and motionless to my hunger for connection (and release). I turned inward. She, a very social, community-building gem of a human being, checked out and switched to Potemkin mode whenever anyone was looking. I felt like I was constantly being gaslit. Even when I tried to talk about our problems, she'd act as if I had said nothing at all. It was the damnest thing, and I had no words for it.
Maybe she's starting to see the light and be empathic to my pain. But, if that's what's happening, I'm just running out of steam and hope. Hope isn't necessary for me to stay the course, but motivation is beginning to lag.

Hi! I am doing 7 days in the Dolomites, but to start the trip my boyfriend and I are flying into VCE. While there, we figured we would do a full day in Venice before embarking to the Dolomites. Below is our plan:

• Fri PM: Arrive at VCE, stay overnight
• Sat Full Day: Tour Venice, stay overnight
• Sun AM: Pick up rental car, drive to Dolomites

We will arrive around 7pm on a Friday, full day touring Venice on Saturday, pick up rental car on Sunday from VCE and head north. That being said, I am wondering if it makes most sense to just get a hotel near the airport, and then take a taxi to the city all day on Saturday and take a taxi back in the evening, and pick up the rental the next day. My heart is telling me it would be a better experience to stay in a hotel near San Marco and take a taxi early Sunday AM back to VCE to pick up the rental, but I know logistically it probably makes more sense to just stay near the airport and take transportation back/forth into the city for the day.
Any thoughts?

Hanging out with a cop at my shooting club over the weekend. His advice is to stop leaving your firearm in the car when you have to go to some random store that doesn't allow firearms. If they see you're carrying a gun, they can tell you to leave. If they call the cops, the cops will tell you to leave. You leave and get on with your life. You won't get arrested unless you're carrying someplace like a courthouse or airport. He thinks having lots of CCW people leaving guns in their cars is an easy way for people to get their guns stolen. Interesting take.

Rented a car in 2020 in McAllen Texas during the epidemic, drive rental to families house in Amarillo Texas where I was pulled over and was told the registration was expired and needed to contact Avis and let them know and until issue was fixed park the car. As directed by police I contacted Avis let them know the registration was expired and that they would have to come get car. This went back and forth until they came and retrieved car. And one afternoon I was pulled over and violently pulled from my personal car and arrested for Unauthorized Use of a motor vehicle. I had no idea what was going on. And said what is going on and the local police only said that I had a warrant. I bonded out and contacted Avis and was told to contact the McAllen police department. Which I did and was given the run around and told that the car was returned and case would be dismissed. And I let go and thought how absurd. On May 10th I heard a knock at the door asked who it was no one answered and then I was bombarded by the local sheriff's department and violently handcuffed and told I had a warrant and I was going to be picked up by McAllen sheriff's office and taken down there. Spent the whole weekend in jail worried about loosing my job my home for a car that has been returned a long time ago. What I need is an attorney that would be willing to take this case and sue for damages and mental trauma and to take the local sheriff's office on for violation of my civil rights. I have proof of rental agreement and payments that where made . I have proof that I didn't steal a rental car, I rented a car and continue to pay for it. Please help

Hi, I am a US citizen who received a camera speeding violation by Merseyside police on the 31st of January while on holiday. The violation occurred while driving a rental car. I plead guilty and paid a £100 fine and a £40 fee with the rental car company. After a month the original £100 fine was refunded with no explanation. Today I received a letter stating I now owe £408 according to a judge’s ruling. My question is why the refund and why the new fine? What are the worst consequences for not paying? If I never intend to come to the UK again I understand that there are no true consequences, but I never know what the future holds.

Hi folks! I’m considering a trip to Mount Rainier and/or Olympic the first week of October. I was going to rent a campervan but it appears the campgrounds in the NPs are closed after September. Any advice on other campgrounds to consider or should I just look at a rental car and hotels? TIA!

In the other forum it was clear that I had planned out too much in too short of a timeframe. Given the requirement to start in NY and horrific ME traffic in summertime, this is the new plan that reduces traffic and is a bit more leisurely. did have to cut Kennebunkport sadly.

Ironically Dombrowski had been fired by the Tigers because of his belief that the organization’s competitive window had closed and that the team needed to rebuild; the Tigers gave the job to his former assistant who got one more winning season out of their aging core before the inevitabilities became insurmountable. By that time the Red Sox were in the midst of their second straight division crown of three, which climaxed with the single greatest season in franchise history. This is how Dombrowski built that team, as well as the fiscal panic that cost the Red Sox the greatest all around player in franchise history following it:

At once the most maligned and most underrated move of the Dombrowski era as well as being the biggest, the David Price signing saw the Red Sox for the first time handout a nine figure contract to a free agent pitcher. This was all the more dramatic as they had alienated and traded away their own homegrown southpaw ace (Jon Lester) less than eighteen months before. This was also the first time with the Red Sox that Dave Dombrowski acquired a player he was he previously familiar with, perhaps slightly overpaying for that familiarity. Did we mention that this was largest contract ever given to a pitcher at time, too?
Price had a solid first season in Boston, leading the league in innings pitched with 230 and striking out nearly a man per inning. Nonetheless the first three years of his tenure were marked with mutual hostility towards the ever-ravenous Boston sports media, only alleviated after his fantastic 2018 postseason run. Aging and injuries limited both the quantity and quality of his performance in 2017 and 2019; this trend as well as his 31 million annum salary contributed to owner John Henry’s decision to offload Price even at the cost of Mookie Betts. If only for that last reason alone the David Price signing is one the Red Sox would likely not repeat in hindsight.

The first of many times Dombrowski would be burned in pursuit of bullpen arms, this deal with Seattle comes down to Wade Miley for Carson Smith. Miley had been signed as a reclamation project by Cherrington before 2015 in the hopes that Miley could serve as a solid mid-rotation option, which he more or less fulfilled with just short of 200 league average innings. Smith on the other hand was coming off his first full season in the majors where he gave the Mariners seventy brilliant innings of high leverage relief pitching (2.31 ERA, 11.8 K/9, and only two home runs allowed).
In a twist of fate, this trade hurt both teams as Smith immediately got injured and only pitched 24 innings in the rest of his career while Miley bombed in Seattle en route to a midseason jettisoning. Yet he rebounded with Baltimore in 2017 and remains an effective if oft-injured starting pitcher to this day, currently with the Milwaukee Brewers.

July 7, 2016: Traded Wendell Rijo and Aaron Wilkerson to the Milwaukee Brewers. Received Aaron Hill and cash.
With Pablo Sandoval well into his career of eating his way out of Boston, the Red Sox carried a gaping hole at third base from August 2012 to July 2017. One of the short term attempts at a fix featured the acquisition of infielder Aaron Hill, hoping that he and Travis Shaw could platoon for the rest of the 2016 season. The thirty four year old Hill had been decent in Milwaukee in the first half after two bad seasons, but he reverted to that form as soon as he put on a Red Sox uniform, posting a 54 OPS+ in 137 plate appearances. After another terrible eighty plate appearances for the Giants in 2017 Hill was done. On the bright side, the two players Dombrowski gave up for him never amounted to anything.
July 9, 2016: Traded Jose Almonte and Luis Alejandro Basabe to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received Brad Ziegler.
Ziegler was an accomplished submarine righty who the Red Sox acquired for basically free to get same-sided batters out, a role which he fulfilled to perfection (1.52 ERA in 30 innings). Another clearly won trade for DD.
July 14, 2016: Traded Anderson Espinoza to the San Diego Padres. Received Drew Pomeranz.
At the time, Anderson Espinoza was a teenager in Single A while Drew Pomeranz had appeared to finally unlock his long-salivated over potential with an all-star appearance. Ideally the Padres were hoping Espinoza could eventually develop to that same quality while the Red Sox expected Pomeranz to fill the fourth spot in the rotation. Neither team got what they wanted, at least in 2016 or for most of thereafter; Espinoza immediately went down with a major arm injury which kept him from pitching professionally for five years. Pomeranz himself reverted to his pre-breakout level for the rest of the season, bounced back with a big 2017 (17-6, 3.32 ERA, a strikeout per inning across 174 frames) and then finally was the forgotten man on the 2018 pitching staff due to injuries and ineffectiveness (6.08 ERA in 74 innings, 66 strikeouts to 44 walks). At this point the thirty year old southpaw looked like the quintessential example of TNSTAAPP (There’s No Such Thing As A Pitching Prospect), another electric arm who would never match his potential due to injuries and command woes. Anyways, Pomeranz then seemed to resuscitate his career out of the bullpen for the 2019 Brewers and 2020-21 Padres with a sub-2 ERA across 70 innings in those three seasons…before injuries again struck. Though he has not pitched in the majors in three years he remains in the Dodgers minor league system, currently (where else) on the injured list.
December 6, 2016: Traded Victor Diaz, Luis Alexander Basabe, Michael Kopech and Yoán Moncada to the Chicago White Sox. Received Chris Sale.
It’s easy to forget now, but Moncada was not only a can’t miss prospect but one of the three best in all of baseball at the time, and Kopech was another Top 100 type. I’ve covered Kopech in my previous article on Red Sox pitching prospect busts but Moncada’s own failure to reach his ceiling was due more to injuries and a passive approach at the plate. Thus far into his career, Moncada has had two good seasons out of seven and played in at least 130 games in only three. With a strikeout rate of thirty percent, a declining walk rate, little power and less defense, he’s become a fourteen million dollar albatross even when on the field for the White Sox.
Sale, of course, had two Cy Young Award worthy campaigns before injuries and an ill-advised extension soured his final five seasons as a Red Sox. That extension will be discussed further when we come to it, but the trade on its own was inarguably a major victory.
Traded a player to be named later, Josh Pennington, Mauricio Dubón and Travis Shaw to the Milwaukee Brewers. Received Tyler Thornburg. The Boston Red Sox sent Yeison Coca (June 5, 2017) to the Milwaukee Brewers to complete the trade.
Yet another ill-fated trade for a relief pitcher, this time costing the Red Sox heavily in terms of value lost; Shaw went to become an all-star power bat at second and third base for the next two seasons in Milwaukee before his career petered out. Thornburg on the other hand contracted thoracic outlet syndrome from which he never recovered. Even if he had pitched well, the Red Sox could have used Shaw more than any setup man due to Dustin Pedroia’s career ending knee injury.
December 8, 2016: Signed Mitch Moreland as a free agent.
Mitch Moreland was a decent first baseman, but could Dave really not find someone better to play first over the next three years? Even if they cost more than $18.5 million?
December 20, 2016: Traded Clay Buchholz to the Philadelphia Phillies. Received Josh Tobias.
This was more of a psychic relief to Red Sox Nation than anything else, finally alleviating them of the constant confusion over which Bucholz would show up on the mound—the oft-injured and easy to hit version, or the dominating ace? Fittingly Clay’s last three seasons in the majors featured two horrid starts for Philly, sixteen dominating starts in Arizona, and then finally split the difference with a final dozen poor performances as a Blue Jay.

June 12, 2017: Drafted Tanner Houck in the 1st round (24th pick) of the 2017 amateur draft.
Houck’s selection constitutes one-third of the total number of draft picks by Dombrowski that made which helped the Red Sox at the major league level (the other two being fourteenth round pick Kutter Crawford in 2016 and fellow first rounder Triston Casas in 2018); inability to find even depth pieces in the draft left the Red Sox farm system utterly void of impact talent by 2018.
June 23, 2017: Selected Doug Fister off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels.
As alluded to in my previous article, veteran GMs tend to reacquire players they were familiar with from previous stops. Fister had been an excellent fourth starter for the Tigers early in the 2010s but by 2017 the end was clearly staring him in the face; a 4.88 ERA in eighteen appearances (fifteen starts) just underlined this inevitable and unenviable conclusion.
July 26, 2017: Traded Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos to the San Francisco Giants. Received Eduardo Núñez.
Nunez was the short-term solution to Pedroia’s knee injury. He turned out to be the medium-term solution too, as the degenerate condition of the incumbent’s affliction led DD to resign Nunez that winter. While fantastic down the stretch in 2017 this was a stretch of the infielder’s capabilities; Nunez suffered his own knee injuries and posted a remarkable -2.3 WAR as Boston’s primary keystone occupant over the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
July 31, 2017: Traded Gerson Bautista, Jamie Callahan and Stephen Nogosek to the New York Mets. Received Addison Reed.
Another deadline, another deal to reinforce the bullpen. Reed was inconsistent for the Red Sox during his two month stay, which turned out to be the penultimate chapter for his career—a poor 2018 in Minnesota marked the end of his major league career, an astonishingly quick demise even for a reliever.

February 26, 2018: Signed J.D. Martinez as a free agent, five years and 110 million dollars.
The best free agent signing of the Dombrowski era, JD provided the power bat the Red Sox sorely lacked after Big Papi’s retirement. In his first and best season in Boston Martinez led the majors in both runs batted in and total bases, placed third in MVP voting, and earned Silver Sluggers at two different positions! He declined linearly from there, but remains a productive member of any team’s lineup to this day; he has spent the last two seasons as the Dodgers and now Mets’ DH, attempting to compensate for declining bat speed by sacrificing contact for power.
March 4, 2018: Signed Ryan Brasier as a free agent.
The quality of Brasier’s pitching is inversely proportional to the quality of the expectations laid upon him. Thus he alternates excellent if limited seasons with ostensibly healthier but more erratic contributions.
March 24, 2018: Traded Deven Marrero to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Received a player to be named later. The Arizona Diamondbacks sent Josh Taylor (May 15, 2018) to the Boston Red Sox to complete the trade.
Deven Marrero was the prototypical good-field/no-hit infielder. Taylor is yet another oft-injured reliever, though he at least gave the Red Sox two solid seasons as the primary southpaw in 2019 and 2021. After missing all of 2022, he was traded to the Royals for Adalberto Mondesi and a teenage infielder named Angel Pierre; while Mondesi knee injuries seem to have ended his career Pierre posted a .415 OBP in rookie ball last year. Keep an eye and ear out for him as he climbs through the minor league ranks.
June 4, 2018: Drafted Triston Casas in the 1st round (26th pick) of the 2018 amateur draft.
Get well soon. There’s only so much Bobby Dalbec a fan can take.
June 28, 2018: Traded Santiago Espinal to the Toronto Blue Jays. Received Steve Pearce and cash.
Moreland had never and would never hit southpaws, but it took until the middle of his second season in Boston for the Red Sox to provide him with a platoon partner. When they finally did so at least they chose one of the very best platoon players in the major leagues in Steve Pearce; Pearce of course would win the World Series MVP that should have gone to Price later that year.
July 25, 2018: Traded Jalen Beeks to the Tampa Bay Rays. Received Nathan Eovaldi.
Even had he not resigned with the team during the offseason, Eovaldi would have earned his place in Red Sox lore for his heroic six inning relief appearance in the World Series. We’ll discuss the extension later, but also note that Beeks is perhaps the only pitcher who the Rays failed to turn into a Cy Young contender. What’s the opposite of adding insult to injury?
July 30, 2018: Traded Ty Buttrey and Williams Jerez to the Los Angeles Angels. Received Ian Kinsler and cash.
With Nunez playing well below replacement level, the Red Sox needed a replacement for the replacement. Kinsler in his penultimate season at least provided a solid glove; just in case the Red Sox also picked up Brandon Phillips.
November 16, 2018: Signed Steve Pearce as a free agent. AND, December 6, 2018: Signed Nathan Eovaldi as a free agent.
These were covertly two of the worst transactions of the Dave Dombrowski era. Refusing to say goodbye to midseason rentals is risky enough, but the amount of money given to Pearce and Eovaldi also baffled reasonable explanations; a thirty-six-year-old platoon hitter at first base is replaceable enough, even when he’s not the weak side of the arrangement. Had Pearce played well and been healthy in 2019, perhaps the six and quarter million would have seemed mostly worth it; instead, he “hit” .180 in twenty nine games before retiring.
Meanwhile, Eovaldi’s lengthy injury history made it a minor miracle that he was healthy enough for the Red Sox during his three months in Boston—bringing him back for four years and sixty-eight million dollars can only be explained as a sentimental move, an excessive reward for that World Series performance. As could have been reasonably expected in December 2018, Nitro Nate only proved worthy of that contract in one out of four seasons; in the other three he was either injured for most of the season, ineffective, or both.

March 23, 2019: Extended Chris Sale for five years, 145 million dollars.
It wasn’t the David Price contract that caused the fiscal panic that cost the Red Sox their best player since at least Carl Yastrzemski, not really. The Red Sox could have eaten that sunken cost, had it been the sole albatross on their pitching staff. But, of course, it was only one of three unnecessary contracts that Dave Dombrowski issued to injury-prone starting pitchers on the wrong side of thirty. Sale had already shown long term red flags in 2018, which argued for letting him play out his walk year in 2019 before possibly ponying up the cash to keep him. After all, the Red Sox also had to extend Xander Bogaerts as well as the inestimable Betts; those two would cost at least sixty million a year to retain. Since they were coming off the most dominant single season in franchise history, perhaps now was the best time to let go some of the chief contributors, before the Red Sox tricked themselves into trying to recapture lightning in a bottle…Well, you know what happened in reality.
Between them, Eovaldi, Sale, and Price cost the Red Sox $52 million in 2019 alone, then $67 million in 2020; accounting for other contracts (JBJ’s arbitration rang up $11 million, Bogey was extended for $20 million, and JD was on the books for about $24 million) that was at least $122 million dollars already assigned to six players entering 2020. Assuming a payroll of effectively $200 million, this would have left about thirty million to spend on the other twenty-odd players required to field a team after giving Mookie his presumed megadeal. Turning back to 2019, just like with the Tigers in 2015, Dave couldn’t even make his customary July trade for pitching; the acquisition of Andrew Cashner from the Orioles felt like a low-budget parody of his previous deadline splashes, which of course it was.
There’s the real reason Dave Dombrowski was fired—just as in Detroit his full throttle commitment to a win-now mandate from ownership eventually led to a top-heavy roster and barren farm system. Have fun while you can, Phillies Phans.

My group of 16 guys participate in an annual golf tourney in mid-September, often in the Greater Toronto Area. Last year, we branched out to Rochester, NY, and this year, we want to hit up Myrtle Beach.
Some criteria: - We're all 42+, and everyone will want good sit-down meals and bars. - We have to consider flights, and there aren't many direct flights from Toronto. - regarding vehicular transportation, would a small bus daily be a good idea, or should we look at car rentals? - Our budget demographic is all over the place, but everyone has a career, and there are no deadbeats in the group. - Everyone needs their own bed, ideally two people to a room max - on that note, a hotel/resort is what we’d want. No Airbnb’s - And obviously, some great, varied courses to play.
I'm not sure where to begin, having never visited MB before. Are there any tips on areas to stay in? Any places that cater to a group of mid-life dudes escaping their wives for the weekend? Is mid-September even a good time to visit? Is Golf Zoo a reliable source, or does anyone have any good golf travel agents they can recommend?

I was involved in a minor accident with no airbags deployed. Me and the other person had the same insurer and I was not at fault so the insurer immediately was willing to cover everything and sent me to a collision shop that works with them directly. They also gave me a rental car for the entire time my car will be in the shop.
I also had some minor injuries (soft tissue) and I called them and they wanted to settle for 1500 + 10,000 in medical bills I can send them and they will pay them directly to the hospital or wherever I end up going.
I think this is more than fair, but I have no experience, so any reassurance or help would be appreciated!

My (M37) childhood friend (F37) is smart, but she kind of squandered her 20s. She pretty much just dinked around living off her family and working random part-time jobs, then finally graduated college when we were 28 or maybe even 30 idk. Her degree is in Geography, which is also not great to find a job where she lives in Latin America.
About 10 years ago she met and eventually moved-in with an older dude (he is probably in his early or mid 50s now). The guy is a surgeon, makes good money and has taken care of her money-wise ever since.
He is also emotionally abusive, manipulative and extremely jealous. He gets angry and yells at her when she goes to visit her sick mother in a different city. He gets angry and yells when she gets a job and he demands that she just be a housewife. He gets angry and yells when she very occasionally goes out at night with her friends. And whenever he gets angry, which sounds like it is a lot of the time, he threatens to leave her.
I and other friends have talked to her about this and she seems very aware of the situation. They have been to couples therapy and she has been to individual therapy, to no avail. Mentally, she is a modern woman in many respects and she understands how toxic and possibly dangerous her partner is, but I believe she is also terrified of losing the financial comfort she has in the relationship. These days, everyone in her family has financial difficulties, so she would likely have to really fend for herself for the first time in her life if she left him.
Honestly, being her friend and listening to these stories for years has taken a toll on me. It’s been frustrating, but I’ve stuck with her and listened and supported as best I could.
But something happened last December that finally flipped a switch in my head and made me not want to know about her life anymore. Her dad, who lives near me in the US, had a stroke last year and had been struggling, so she flew in to visit him. She gave me a heads up about the visit and told me we should meet near the airport when she landed, then I could go home and she could take a 3-hour bus to see her dad. I offered to just drive her to the city where her dad lives and then stay in town for the weekend so she could take her dad places, since he doesn’t have a car.
She said no. She said her dad is a “very jealous man” and he would be angry if a man that is not her boyfriend visits her and drives her around like that.
So now I know where her acceptance of toxic masculinity probably started.
But I also know that she knows in her heart of hearts how wrong this all is. A conversation where I point out the bullshit wouldn’t make sense, because she already knows and she is choosing to live like that. And so I feel like she has just chosen to stay stuck there, and she will stay stuck there, and my destiny if I keep her friendship is to continue hearing awful, frustrating stories forever.
I don’t want to be in the friendship anymore and I could never just ghost her, but I also have no idea what explanation to give for ending the friendship, because the truth in this case sounds horrible.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
