2024.03.03 21:03 MusketeersPlus2 [CHAT] Looking for ideas for a card pattern

My amazing psychiatrist is retiring. I'm really going to miss him because he's the reason my life is exactly where I want it to be today, so I want to do something to show him how much I appreciate him and I'm thinking of cross-stitching a card. I have cards with a 3"x5" oval opening, or one with a 4.5"x2.75" rectangular opening. I have fabric anywhere from 16 to 36 ct and I'm not afraid to stitch 1x1 at 28 and 32 (I've done both). I'm willing to pull elements from different patterns & figure out lettering (I have a backstitch alphabets booklet), but I'm trying to decide what to put on it.
TIA for helping me decide!

[CHAT] calligraphy-style alphabet patterns?
does anyone know of a font that uses both cross stitch AND backstitch?? all of the alphabet patterns i’ve found are either one or the other! i’m adding text to an existing pattern and i’d really like to find a font that emulates the combo of thick and thin strokes you see in a lot of calligraphy (examples👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻)

2024.01.08 21:45 contrasupra [CHAT] When outlining irregular shapes with backstitch, do you scrupulously follow the pattern or just kind of wing it?

I'm working on an alphabet sampler from dimensions with all these little fruits and vegetables. I am up to the backstitch and I've been giving myself eye strain staring at this pattern, trying to count the number of stitches that the lines go over, and it suddenly occurred to me that I could probably just look at the work and outline the shapes however makes sense. The perfectionist in me is rebelling against just ignoring the pattern, but the reality is that the fruits don't overlap, and no one is going to be comparing my back stitching to the sample (not to mention I've found a few small errors in the shapes of leaves and so on, which don't matter at all if I just outline them as if they're right). Do other people do this? Or do you actually follow exactly the way the back stitching is written?

I love “It’s a Wonderful Life” so I wanted to commemorate it with a backstitch piece. It’s a nice message that applies to everyone :] Here’s the font I used - (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1242059037/cross-stitch-font-cross-stitch-alphabet)

Pattern is "Custom Wedding Wreath" by Etsy seller KitsBySAstitch (Ukrainian vendor!). I picked this one because the bridesmaids and the families in shades of blue. This was also my first time backstitching and I was very scared! Haha. NOTE: if you buy this pattern, contact the seller with the names and date that you want and she'll send you a bespoke pattern. If you just download it from Etsy, it DOES NOT come with an alphabet. The seller responds very quickly and is super nice. (Also my brother is ten years younger than me and I feel Very Old right now.)

2023.08.06 14:47 Sherielizabeth [CHAT] Looking for a whimsical series of patterns to turn into a baby/kids quilt

So I’m picking up cross stitching again after probably more than a decade and since then I’ve learned to quilt! I’ve a baby on the way and would love to make her a twin sized quilt with some cross stitching on it. I made the mistake of falling in love with the adorable fox from this post but of course it doesn’t seem like the pattern maker has any more of him and his birdy frienemy.
Does anybody have any pattern recommendations before I dive into the quagmire of Google and etsy? I would love 3-5 vignettes to make (even if they’re small) that maybe tell a story or are just playful, or even a series of 12 (like a monthly thing) or animals/fairies/flowers of the alphabet or something... I figured y’all might have some good ideas!!
Thanks!

[FO] Late Christmas gift gone timely birthday gift
Hi everyone,
My wonderful sister got me into cross stitch during the Covid-19 pandemic and here we are, about a year and a half later. This is my first time posting about one of my projects here :)
Birthday gift for one of my best friends:
Adapted from the “Free Hug” pattern by GameOverStitches on Esty.Font is Backstitch Alphabet by FloReen Studio on Etsy.
I tried to replace the pirate sails for white ones and added a bit of backstitching on the tentacles and hatches.
I hope they’ll like it!

2020.06.30 15:27 Slight-Brush [CHAT] Drafting a sampler - mixing cross stitch and…kind of blackwork? Too weird?

So I’m modifying - well, redrafting - a vintage 1980s cross stitch sampler kit I rescued from eBay.
I’ve swapped some of the generic repeated motifs (cherries, rabbits, flowers) for ones that have personal or familial significance, and I’m pretty pleased with the layout so far.
However, the next task is to include significant locations. I’ve successfully drafted a cabin, a bridge and a country church, but I need to include a couple of buildings with fiddly architectural details - think cathedrals or gothic college buildings.
I’ve had a reasonable stab at blackwork-ish all-backstitch renditions with a bunch of fractional stitches to capture the detail in the 25st high space. They look ok alone, but will they look weird in amongst blocky crossstitch?
The original pattern had three alphabets - would swapping one for a backstitch alphabet to make it more harmonious?
Or I could use some backstitchy border elements instead of cross stitch ones?
Or just redraft the whole thing in blackwork?
Aaah! Help!

2020.02.19 19:49 Always_Katie [CHAT] Looking for a pretty script alphabet...

I used a similar font years ago on a Christmas ornament, but it was just the two words (Joyeux Noël), not a whole alphabet. And now I can’t even find that ornament or the pattern 😄 But what I’m looking for is a script/calligraphy font that has whole/half stitches for the thicker parts of the letters and backstitching for the skinny, swoopy, flourishy bits. I’ve seen so many scripty fonts that are only whole/half stitches without the backstitching, or that are all backstitchy with no thicker bits.
Inexpensive paid is totally fine, but I do love a freebie 😄 Maybe a programmy thing where I can put in a phrase and it makes the pattern? Any leads?

2020.02.16 20:57 tryinghard_tocare [CHAT] MacStitch kerning?

Just got MacStitch to work on a gift idea I’ve had, but need some advice on handling the spacing between letters.
Is there a way to adjust the kerning? I entered a new backstitch alphabet, and when I went to type it, it came out waaay spread out. 1 - Did I enter the letters incorrectly when setting up the alphabet? 2 - Is there a way to shift letter placement once I have pasted as a layer from the BS alphabet tool? 3 - Do I need to place each letter individually from motifs? (I hope not because I was excited about the type tool and this would defeat the purpose of that tool...)
Thanks in advance, pattern-making pros!

2020.02.12 15:06 BorisDeOnion [CHAT] Alphabet patterns

I'm planning on undertaking a project that involves a lot of text, and was hoping if someone could point me in the right direction for alphabet patterns (whether they've been posted before, or if someone knows a good source). As it's going to be quite a lot of words, I'm hoping for backstitch letters as they usually take up less space than full crosses, but wanted to see what options were out there before starting. I've seen a few free ones online but nothing is really looking like what I'm after, which is just simple but neat lettering, nothing overly fancy (also free would be nice but not necessary). Thanks in advance!
