2024.05.14 14:31 Frequent-Scheme7213 Moyes greatest hits

Just a personal list of my most memorable Moyes’ games since his reappointment in 2019. Telling that the majority of league matches come from the 2020-21 period, suggesting it’s probably the right time to change. Thanks David, you put the pride back into being a Hammers fan.
Hope others share their favourite games.
Premier League- 4th Oct 2020- Leicester 0- West Ham 3 First signs that Moyes’ counter attacking style could be effective and exciting as we shock a high-riding Leicester team. Antonio, Fornals and Bowen all on the scoresheet.
Premier League- 18th Oct 2020- Tottenham 3- West Ham 3 Optimism from the previous games start to fade as we flatline early to a three-goal deficit, are we back to the same old West Ham? An amazing turnaround capped by Lanzini’s wondrous injury-time equaliser shows Moyes’ has instilled a grit and perseverance we have been missing.
Premier League- 5th April 2021- Wolves 2- West Ham 3 Barnstorming first-half as we brutalise Wolves on the break and race into a three-goal lead. Moyes’ favoured style now supercharged with Lingard on board. The heady heights of 4th in the table, daring to dream of the Champions League.
Premier League- 23rd May 2021- West Ham 3- Southampton 0 Late-season defeats to Newcastle, Chelsea and Everton have killed the Champions League dream but joy abounds on the final day of the season as we clinch 6th and a Europa League spot. Pablito scores two quick first half-goals and a late Declan Rice solo effort seals the deal. Fans allowed back in the stadium after a season of playing in eerie emptiness; strangely we thrived!
Premier League- 7th November 2021- West Ham 3- Liverpool 2 This was Moyes’ peak in the league as our physical strength on set-pieces and lightning- fast breaks overcame a disgruntled Liverpool. We reach the heady heights of 3rd yet strangely it seemed to go downhill league-wise from here.
Europa League- 17th March 2022- West Ham 2 Sevilla 0 (AET) Moyes greatest result? Still feels a surreal night, a weird fever dream as we comfortably upset a Sevilla side who had made this competition their own. The atmosphere at the bowl is fervent, Soucek heads us level in the tie and Yarmolenko adds the scriptwriter's ending, scoring the winner and leaves the pitch with the Ukrainian flag. Russia had declared war on his country three weeks earlier. Lopetegui leaves defeated but with unfinished business in Stratford.
Europa League- 15th April 2022- Lyon 0 West Ham 3 Going into second-leg as underdogs , the Hammers produce a classic away performance to shock an overconfident French side and march into the semi-finals. Ballon D’Awson, Rice and Bowen with the goals and the high point in Moyes’ relationship with the fans as he is serenaded off the pitch.
Premier League- 16th April 2023- West Ham 2- Arsenal 2 Flickering signs of mongrel in the dying dog as the Hammers take offence to a showboating Gunners side two-up and high on hubris. Rice leads the press and Arsenal crumble under the pressure leaving their title challenge in tatters. The home fans ask why it took 30 games into the campaign to show this passion. Moyes' side have been too passive and meek all season.
Europa Conference League Final- 7th June 2023- Fiorentina 1 West Ham 2 Moyes and Bowen entrench themselves in Hammers folklore as a last-gasp winner seals our first trophy in 43 years. In truth, the match was emblematic of late-Moyes style as we grind our way unprettily through the game but who cares when the result is this joyous. Moyes gets a deserved first trophy of a long managerial career and in keeping with his old-school values hangs the medal round the neck of his elderly father.
Europa League - April 19th, 2024- West Ham 1 Bayer Leverkusen 1 The rage against the dying of the light as a first half of shock and awe rattles the all-conquering Leverkusen. Moyes’ side, desperate to stay in the competition, go for the jugular from the off and show the high-energy, front-foot style fans have been crying out for. We know the dream is dead when the half-time whistle goes, and we are only one -up. Predictably, the players can hardly run in the second half, lack of squad depth and indiscipline from key players have left us snookered. Fully expect to see the referee exposed as being ‘on the take’ in the next few years. That first half though, what might have been Davie?

2024.05.14 13:20 daswef2 [RATE ANNOUNCEMENT] Brazil Rate

Hello, welcome to the Brazilian Classics Rate! This rate covers five albums released between the years 1968 and 1974, exploring the likes of Tropicália, MPB, Samba, and more. We are excited to enjoy this music with both long time fans, and also welcome newcomers to experience these all-time favorites for the first time.
Note: I am not Brazilian and am not a Portuguese writer / speaker. My apologies if anything is lost in translation through this process.
Hold on: What’s a rate?
About once a month, this subreddit holds games called “rates” where a host selects a collection of songs and people score each song on a scale of 1-10 (with a single 11 & a 0 available as well). Ballots of these scores are submitted, and then over “reveal” weekend, the host takes the averages of the songs and eliminates them from worst to best, giving one song out of all the albums the top spot, the crown, & bragging rights forever.
Our sister subreddit popheads has a Guide to Rates Video that can give you a broad overview of rates (please note our reveal process is thread-based instead of video chatrooms). And here's recent examples of a rate announcement and a rate reveal.
BALLOT Due Date - June 21st, 2024
Reveal Weekend - June 28-30, 2024

Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes (1968)
Os Mutantes was made up of Rita Lee, and the brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias. In 1968 Os Mutantes released their debut album, were featured on the Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circenses compilation, and performed as the backing band for Gilberto Gil's self-titled second album. The Tropicália movement embraced taking international ideas and re-interpreting them, combining them to create something Brazilian. Os Mutantes will likely be a favorite for those who love psychedelic rock.

Gal Costa was close friends with both Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso as well as their spouses, and Gal Costa's bossa nova debut Domingo was a close collaboration with Veloso. By the release of Gal Costa we hear more of the impact of Tropicália and psychedelia on her sound. This self titled album features more songs from writers besides Veloso, including songs written by Gilberto Gil, Rosil Cavalcanti, Tom Zé, Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, Jorge Ben, and Torquato Neto.

Clube Da Esquina - Clube Da Esquina (1972)
The Clube Da Esquina name (Corner Club) refers to a corner of the street where Lô Borges used to live, and Borges and Milton Nascimento played for fun in the 1960s.
“I hope our young people don’t allow themselves to be swept up in this dictatorship business, because they don’t understand what it was like,” said [Milton Nascimento] who was stalked by agents from the notorious department of political and social order as his career took off in the 1960s. “Whenever we were going to release a song we had to send it to them for them to censor.” Eventually, Nascimento’s manager rented an isolated beach house where the musicians were free to compose the record of their lives. “It was wonderful … just us and the waves rolling up to our front door,” said Borges. “We weren’t thinking about selling millions of records or being the next big summer hit. We just wanted to make art.” Nascimento smiled as he recalled how that legendary album was conceived half a century ago, far from the prying eyes of the dictatorship. “It was a record made just by friends … We’d spend all day composing, from the moment we awoke with the fishermen bringing in their nets to the moment we went to bed.”
The cover of the album features a picture of two boys playing in rural Rio de Janeiro by the photographer Carlos da Silva Assunção Filho (also known as Cafi).

Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare (1972)
By popular demand, Novos Baianos has been added to the rate mix! As suggested by their name, Novos Baianos were founded in the state of Bahia in 1969. During the making of Acabou Chorare, they were mentored by the "Father of Bossa Nova", João Gilberto. The album's title (translated as No More Crying) also came from a story about Gilberto's daughter.
Note: the album has two versions of Preta Pretinha, track 2 which is the full version and track 10 which seems to have been a radio edit. We are only rating the full version of the song.

Jorge Ben Jor - A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974)
"I’m not in any movement, no. I think movements adopted me."
Jorge Ben Jor is the first recorded artist of the five here, but A Tábua De Esmeralda is chronologically our latest recorded album of the rate. This one is arguably a concept album; influenced by the Hermetic text "The Emerald Tablet" as well as Jorge's interest in alchemy, and features songs focused on Afro-Brazilian identity such as "Zumbi".

Rules - PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR SCORES
Listen to each song and assign each a score between 1 and 10. Decimals are fine, but please refrain from giving decimal scores with more than 1 spot. This is because I'm using a computer program to parse the votes and print everything out (more on that later).
You have to listen to and score every song in the main rate. Otherwise, I will not accept your ballot as it will crash the program (more on that later).
Your scores should NOT be considered confidential as they aren’t. Feel free to shitpost about them in the general discussion threads whenever you feel like it - users over at popheads usually just talk about their averages of the albums and what 11 and 0 they gave (which I will explain on the next bullet point!)
You may give ONE song a 0 and ONE song an 11 in the main rate. Please reserve these for your least favorite and most favorite tracks; excessive sabotage ruins rate results and generally makes things less fun.
You can change your scores at any time! Feel free to PM me at any point after submission before the deadline and I'll be happy to revise them for you.
I am using a computer program that fellow rater letsallpoo designed in order to parse these votes! While this will make things a lot more efficient and reduces errors on my part, this does mean that scores need to be sent in a very specific way. The easiest way to make sure your scores follow the necessary format is to use the pre-prepared link at the top & bottom of this post. PLEASE USE THAT. You can copy and paste it to a notepad file or something and fill in your scores there, but PLEASE use that format to send in your scores.
DO NOT SABOTAGE the rate by giving outrageously low/high scores for the sole purpose of skewing the results, we reserve the right to exclude any ballot we suspect of this. If you're worried your scores could be mistakenly perceived as such, all you need to do is leave comments explaining the reasoning behind them.
Did a lot of copy and pasting here (including the following list of users), so thank you to all the raters of old: vapourlomo; roseisonlineagain; DolphLundgrensArms; R_E_S_I_G_N_E_D; stansymash; ClocktowerMaria; aerocom; themilkeyedmender; greencaptain; Crankeedoo; dirdbub; ThatParanoidPenguin; tedcruzcontrol; kappyko; FuckUpSomeCommasYeah; LazyDayLullaby; SRTViper; Whatsanillinois; NFLFreak98; freav; freeofblasphemy; kvothetyron, RatesNorman; aPenumbra; idontreallycare4; p-u-n-k_girl; luigijon3; WaneLietoc; dream_fighter2018; darjeelingdarkroast; smuckles; PiperIBarelyKnowHer; welcome2thejam; imrlynotonreddit; kvothetyrion; thedoctordances1940; b_o_g_o (of the BogoLomo Rate Collective); MCK_OH; TiltControls; u/chug-a-lug-donna; u/TakeOnMeByA-ha; u/indie_fan_; u/bilbodabag, zenits, saison_Marguerite, and tons of people on popheads.

2024.05.14 13:19 qnsmike 408 super lucky

I meant to use George Davis who is a hall of famer, instead I clicked on Harry who only briefly played for the giants. 100 years later both Eric or Chili Davis would of been good in that box. Chase was a notorious game thrower. Jim Thorpe comes up again. Dissatisfied with the Damon choice, could not think of a more exotic player

2024.05.14 12:27 PhoenixFllies777 Judoka in MMA / High-level Judo use in MMA (List)

Judo is extremely underrated in MMA. It is definitely under-represented as well, due to a multitude of reasons (MMA is no-gi, Judo doesn't train leg attacks, IJF bans its top athletes from cross-competing, most MMA is in the USA where Judo sucks and wrestling is world-class, etc etc), but Judo is still very much used in MMA. The problem is many times, nobody recognizes it. American MMA commentators are also almost always completely clueless when it comes to Judo, which doesn't help (you need not go any further than Karo Parisyan basically going through half the Gokyo on his opponents, only to be greeted with the same OH MY GOD ! JUDO THROW! by Joe Rogan). There are many fighters, both superstars (Islam, Fedor) and not (Gregory Rodrigues, Luana Pinheiro) who heavily use Judo in their matches.
Over the years, I have actively been looking for Judo in MMA. I am going to share my list of fighters displaying high level Judo in MMA, as a reference point for anyone looking to see how the art is used in MMA, or even for anyone just looking to see some banging throws. The list is by no means exhaustive. I would love for people more knowledgeable than me to add fighters I may have missed.
Disclaimer: Let's focus on Judo use in MMA. There are several fighters who have a background, even a black belt, in Judo but don't really use it (Amanda Nunes, Valentina Shevchenko, Merab Dvalishvili, Shinya Aoki, Seika Izawa, Fabricio Werdum, Ronaldo Jacare Souza just off the top of my head). Also yes, Morote Gari is a leg takedown, and it is in the Judo syllabus. Almost nobody learned double legs in Judo, let's not go to these extremes.
Karo Parisyan
The OG of Judo in MMA, the man who single-handedly put Judo on the MMA map. Judo is displayed in all of his matches; several Youtube breakdowns and highlights exist as well. He also put out a Judo for MMA instructional which is gold, if you can get your hands on it. Unfortunately he got derailed by personal issues (I hear he's doing better now thankfully). Huge variety of throws, he used throws nobody else has used before or after against very high level opponents. Shoutout to his kimura grip hikikomi gaeshi that he almost beat GSP with.
Ronda Rousey
UFC champion, Olympic bronze medalist, WMMA pioneer - you know her, everyone knows her. Extremely one-dimensional, but a pioneer for her time. Her entire game plan was clinch JUDO THROW juji gatame (armbar). Shoutout to her textbook use of hip toss into kesa gatame into roflstomp (vs Alexis Davis). Her matches with Miesha Tate are also among the best MMA matches (male or female).
Fedor Emelianenko
PRIDE champion. Arguably the Heavyweight GOAT. Probably the best example of Judo adapted to MMA (together with Islam), as he did not rely on Judo as much as Karo or Ronda, but perfectly blended it with his striking to create an unstoppable force. I'd heavily recommend watching Sonny Brown's Fedor breakdown on Youtube, or pretty much any one of Fedor's matches, they're awesome. Shoutout to his use of the overhand right to switch stances when initiating clinches (as a R-handed Judo fighter fighting out of an Orthodox stance).
Islam Makhachev
UFC champion. Undefeated. Ideal example of Judo adapted to MMA. Yes, he's a Dagestani, and he has been training in MMA all his life, so obviously his style is not purely Judo, but it's obvious to anyone who knows where to look that his grappling base is more Judo than wrestling based. Shoutout to him submitting Charles Oliveira, the most prolific BJJ specialist in MMA history, with a Kata Gatame (arm-triangle choke, routinely taught in Judo as a pin with submission potential). His style is also very different from Khabib, who I will not include in this list for the opposite reason; his grappling base was significantly more wrestling based (although he did execute some ridiculously perfect Judo throws on occasion). The entire Khabib camp uses both Judo and wrestling though.
Jon Jones
UFC Champion. Contender for all-time GOAT. Is Jon Jones a Judoka? Nope. Do his matches feature Judo? Absolutely. You only need to watch one of his highlight reels to see a variety of Judo throws, Osoto Gari, Harai Goshi, Tai Otoshi, Sasae, a variety of Kosotos, along with his wrestling-based takedowns. He also uses a lot of inside trips, obviously from wrestling, but he's still a good example of how to use Ouchi Gari in MMA.
Jimmy Hettes
UFC former fighter. Old-school prolific grappler. Very high level Judo and BJJ. Did not have many matches, but they were all grappling clinics, and every one included a multitude of Judo throws (mainly Harai Goshi).
Kayla Harrison
PFL tournament winner. Double Olympic gold medalist. Her recent UFC debut against Holly Holm featured a Harai and a brutal Osoto Gari into a finishing choke.
Yoshihiro Akiyama (Sexiyama)
Heavy Judo base. Struggled in the UFC, but had some banging throws. Still competes at almost 50. Also his nickname was Sexy, can't go wrong with that.
Hector Lombard
Judo Olympian. Heavy Judo base as well, with very slick throws, although he preferred to stand and bang. Was once one of the hottest non-UFC MMA prospects, his career took a massive dive after he got popped for roids.
Satoshi Ishii
Judo Gold medalist. Heavy Judo base. Fought in a variety of promotions around the world, an absolute dog but with average results. He got brutally destroyed by Cro Cop, then went to train with him in Croatia, then denounced his citizenship and became a Croatian citizen. Lol. Also trains with Danaher, and has a bunch of no-gi Judo instructionals at ridiculous prices (because Danaher).
Serghei Spivac
UFC Heavyweight contender. Ragdolls everyone with sloppy but effective Judo throws. Shoutout to his landing in Kesa Gatame too.
Luana Pinheiro
UFC fighter. Judo black belt, (I believe) Olympic alternate. Uses Judo as her main offensive grappling base, has taken down all of her opponents with the same Harai Goshi / O Guruma hybrid.
Gregory Rodrigues
UFC fighter. ?Relative unknown. I personally never heard of him, until I randomly came across one of his matches were he executed one of the most brutal Harai's I've ever seen into a finish. All of his matches feature some degree of Judo, mainly uses Harai. No recorded Judo rank on his wiki (he's recorded as a heavily credentialed BJJ blackbelt), but it's obvious he has Judo training. Also very good wrestling and kickboxing (yes, he's very exciting to watch). Shoutout to his match against Brunno Fereira, a Judo black belt who escaped top position from Rodrigues by securing an Ippon grip, rolling to his knees, and chucking Rodrigues forward with a kneeling Ippon Seoi before brutally KO'ing him a few seconds later.
Tagir Ulanbekov
UFC fighter. Khabib's camp. Uses a lot of clinch takedowns. An absolute specialist in step around throws (I believe it's called "Polish" in wrestling?) - in Judo terms it would be Kosoto Gake +/- Ura Nage depending how you finish it.
Ayaka Miura
ONE Championship fighter. Heavy Judo base. Shoutout to her use of Kesa Gatame to finish opponents.
Rick Hawn
Judo Olympian. Twice fought for the Bellator championship. Unfortunately, I have not watched any of his actual matches, so I cannot confirm how much Judo he uses (I'd love for someone to chime in). Still has a highlight-reel standing Ippon Seoi Nage into KO, so I had to include him.
..
Honorable mention to Yoel Romero, an absolute unit of an athlete. Olympic silver medalist and World champion in Freestyle wrestling, fought for UFC gold. Obviously not a Judoka but he has the cleanest Sasae you will ever see in MMA, as well as a bunch of beautiful step-around throws and inside trips you've probably learned in Judo.

2024.05.14 09:53 foggyfoggyfiction Paris event finals preview, three months out: Uneven bars (Part 2)

Continuing on from part 1 (vault), in the lead up to the summer team selections and the Olympics, I am previewing the anticipated event final fields! Today: uneven bars.
All data is sourced from u/bretonstripes, u/freifrausicher, and Lauren from The Gymternet - thanks for your efforts!
Event Finalist Predictions
Note that gymnasts are listed by existing top score; this is not a prediction of the podium.
Preview
In the spirit of the Mustafina vs. Kocian duel of 2016 and the Derwael v. Lee duel of 2020, the bars final is once again anticipated to feature a showdown between a dominant top pair in Qiu 🇨🇳 and Nemour 🇩🇿. Together, they own the top 14 international scores since January 2023, and having both improved greatly in consistency, they are favored to take gold and silver in either order.
The early bronze medal favorite is Shilese Jones 🇺🇸, medalist in the previous two World finals, having hit 11 of her past 12 routines since a mental breakthrough in consistency at 2022 Worlds. A group of experienced competitors with a history of 14.5+ scores and routines in the 6.2-6.6 D-score can be expected to challenge Jones:
As this group is rather inconsistent, D'Amato 🇮🇹 may have positioned herself as the most likely medal spoiler by hitting all six of her routines to date this year, including defending her European title. Andrade 🇧🇷 has also shown decent consistency this quad hitting 11 of her last 12 and 22 of 25 this quad; however, all three misses came at Worlds 2022 or 2023.
These eight gymnasts alone would make an extremely deep bars final, but there are three "dark horses" who could shake things up, both for the bronze medal race and qualification to the final:
  1. Nina Derwael 🇧🇪: The reigning Olympic champion made an extremely impressive recovery from a shoulder dislocation in late 2023. Despite falling at Euros QF on bars, Derwael is on-track to be competitive in Paris, as adding back her trusty Downie or Nabieva boosts her to a 6.3 D-score. She is also no longer attempting any Tkatchev 1/2 skill which could boost her execution score, and is typically one of the most consistent bars workers.
  2. 2nd Chinese 🇨🇳 gymnast: Had China been able to keep two-time World Champion Wei Xiaoyuan healthy, she likely would be the bronze medal favorite over Jones. Nevertheless, China has shown impressive depth on this event in 2024. Yang Fanyuwei, Hu Jiafei, and Zhang Yihan have all earned high scores with hit 6.4 routines internationally, while Huang Zhuofan (6.8) and Du Siyu (6.6) hit their difficult routines at nationals. Zhang Yihan and Du Siyu are the most likely to make the team currently, and though neither are favored to medal, it wouldn't be a shock either.
  3. 2nd American 🇺🇸 gymnast: Biles has teased a couple upgrades on social media which could put her back in the medal game, but the real unknowns in the American bars scene are Lee and Douglas. Without any scores for hit routines and with questions swirling about stamina, they need to show strong performances at nationals to be considered team contenders, much less potential medalists. However, both are set to attempt at least a 6.4 difficulty routine, which would put them in the mix for bronze given their typically high execution scores.

2024.05.14 09:29 IndieGameFans Looking for an old skool gaming arcade in Rio

I am doing some research looking for a cool venue to maybe run gaming tournament and one idea we had was to host it in a video game arcade. Did a bit of research and found hotzone, but this seems a bit more on the kiddie rides side of things. Any other options?

2024.05.14 09:22 SongWest3744 Create-Your-Own Type Specialist

Create-Your-Own Type Specialist
Create-Your-Own Type Specialist
I’m a huge Pokemon fan, and I’d brainstorm my own Type Specialists (Elite 4 MembeGym Leader) with Pokemon found in their respective regions and their own lores.
Wanted to hear what creative teams you guys can come up with. Here are mine!
————
Johto Elite 4 Member, Davy, is a sea captain specializing in Water-type Pokemon found in the region’s seas. Surprisingly, he happens to be a relative of Hoenn’s Elite 4, Drake, who specializes in Dragon Type Pokemon.
With the rest of the Pokemon in his team being underutilized (close to nowhere to be found in the Gen 2 Games), aside from Kingdra as Claire’s ace, Davy surprises newcomers with his creatures from the deep.
Slowking acts as his bulky ace and partner Pokemon. He opens up with Qwilfish to set up hazards, and has his Lanturn further support the team with Rain Dance. Mantine serves as a Special Defensive Wall. Then he has his Octillery and Kingdra devastate the opponent with a wide coverage of attacks.
————
Hoenn Elite 4 Member, Everest, is a veteran hiker who firmly believes in the flexibility and power of nature. Being the uncle of Kanto Gym Leader, Erika, he also shares the same kinship she has for Grass type. Upholding the belief that nature is a force to be reckoned with, he proves this through the might of his team.
Tropius has taken the spot as his signature Pokemon, and brute forces his opponents with powerful attacks. Everest opens the battle with Ludicolo to setup Rain Dance to cover Grass Type’s common weakness, Fire. Roserade takes advantage of the weather through Weather Ball and other strong special attacks. Shiftry also supports the team with Tailwind, not to mention benefits itself through its Wind Rider Ability. Cacturne and Breloom utilize their movesets to catch opponents off-guard with devastating prowess.

2024.05.14 04:16 Physical_Car_6468 Some reflections

Long time observer, first time poster.
I was born in ‘92, approximately one year after the last time a major Minnesota sports team won a championship. I’ve lived my whole life in Minnesota save for about a year on and off during the pandemic.
I’m about as passionate of a Minnesota sports fan as they come. Accounting for the few years Minnesota didn’t have a hockey team, the statistical likelihood that no Minnesota sports team has won a championship in my lifetime is about 1%. And that’s truly how it feels being a Minnesota fan. I’m a data nerd, and “for fun” I will occasionally calculate or look up the Minnesota team’s odds of winning. Regularly, I will see 85% near certainty scenarios dwindle to 50, then 30, then 10, then a loss.
I’ve been a Wolves fan since the Billups days and have suffered through the dark days of Randy Foye and Ricky Davis watching most of their games through the whole thing.
A few quick reactions from games 3 & 4 -
1) I couldn’t be more happy none of our boys will be receiving trophies before tomorrow’s tip off
2) as a recent new dad, I’m truly happy Rudy had the privilege to be present for the birth of his son. But that’s what it is, a privilege. And after missing game 2, he owes it to his teammates to bring it in a big way. And he hasn’t
3) the coach tearing his knee is so unprecedented in the most Minnesota precedented way
4) the league breaking precedence on suspension criteria is equally “Minnesota precedented”
5) I’m rooting for KAT, he’s trying to be Ant’s equal. I empathize with him and wanting to ball out for his mom on Mother’s Day, but he played out of his mind (not in a good way). KAT needs to be the KAT we’ve seen him be at his best
6) ANT being in Minnesota is the most unprecedented thing of all. This team, franchise, fan base, community needs to rally around the special gift that he is to this community
And I’m here to say despite all the precedented unpresidence, FUCK IT! Fuck the Drake in Kentucky blue memes, saying the fans don’t influence the outcomes. If you’re a wolves fan and you’re invested, put all the fuck it vibes you have at your disposal into the ether. Fuck the statistics! If you’re a religious person, don’t pray for this because it’s important. Pray for this because it’s fun and Minnesota deserves it.
We’re winning this! Herb Brooks style, it’s our time! Wolves Back are the only two words I understand!

"Ohtani obviously loves hitting, and is perhaps the best in the game to do it, but those close to him say that he doesn’t have the same passion for pitching as hitting. He does both simply because he can do it."
It became a hot topic in Yahoo Japan since last night. People are quite disturbed by this 'report'. But I cannot believe a word of it. Anyone watched Shohei pitching before knows he has a great passion for pitching. And who are those two persons 'familiar with Ohtani’s thinking'? Balelo and Ippei? Did Bob pay Ippei 60k for this information? I hope so. At least Shohei can get that dentist money back😂 Go Dodgers!

2024.05.14 01:00 EJC28 Saints 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 14 - Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State:
NFL: The Saints fill their tackle need with a feisty and powerful brawler who can make an immediate impact along the offensive line. Fuaga's presence will help the unit become more physical, which will only benefit quarterback Derek Carr and the run game.
CBS Sports: B+. He fills a major need for the Saints. They have big-time tackle issues. Fuaga is a nasty player who will start right away. Love it.
ESPN: The Saints picked a position that has been on their radar since the end of the 2023 season, and it checks a lot of boxes for a New Orleans first-round selection. Fuaga was a team captain and two-year starter for Oregon State and played in the Senior Bowl, a game that has produced a lot of Saints players. The question is how fast can he start and where on the line he fits best. Fuaga said he's open to playing on the left side and has been training for that, even though he played right tackle in college. If the Saints move him to the left side, he'll compete with 2022 first-round pick Trevor Penning. If they keep him on the right side, it could signal that the concerns about Ryan Ramczyk's knees are worse than they thought earlier in the offseason.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Is constantly asking teammates for electrical tape.
Round 2, Pick 41 - Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama:
NFL: The secondary figured to be a spot the Saints might attack, and they traded up to land McKinstry. He's a steady, smart, solid corner with good field awareness and decent but not great ball skills. This selection feels like a solid line drive into the gap for a team that needs more reliable defenders.
CBS Sports: B+. Such a clean outside CB prospect. Press man specialty. Physical but not overly grabby. Solid, not spectacular speed. Ball skills meet the standard you want out of a higher-end starter. Good size too. Arguably the best player available. Expensive trade up.
ESPN: The Saints liked McKinstry enough to trade a fifth and sixth-round pick to move up four spots from No. 45 to No. 41. The team nabbed him in the middle of an early Day 2 run on cornerbacks. The addition of McKinstry doesn't mean it's a sure thing that the Saints deal 2017 first-round cornerback Marshon Lattimore, but it does mean that will be a potential move to watch this summer. McKinstry would join Paulson Adebo, Alontae Taylor and potentially Lattimore in the cornerback room, and he said he'd also like to contribute on special teams as a kick returner.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Was the kid who Naruto ran between classes in high school.
Round 5, Pick 150 - Spencer Rattler, QB, South Carolina:
NFL: This is lower than I imagined Rattler going, especially after six quarterbacks all went off the board in the first 12 picks. Rattler is an interesting developmental talent who has some skills that might remind Saints fans of a certain age of Aaron Brooks -- for both good and bad reasons. Well worth the pick here.
CBS Sports: A-. Former huge recruit who once received first-round buzz. Arm talent jumps off the film. Unafraid to make any throw and at South Carolina connected on many of them. Low-level athlete despite some functional movement away from pressure. Accuracy is good, and reads coverages decently. Older prospect but does have upside. Smart investment this late.
ESPN: The Saints added another quarterback just one year after signing Derek Carr and selecting Jake Haener in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. The Saints usually operate in "win now" mode with how they manage the salary cap, but the selection of Rattler indicates the Saints could be looking toward the future at that position. Rattler will compete with Haener for the backup spot behind Carr after the departure of Jameis Winston. Winston came in for Carr several times last season after Carr left three games with injuries.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Glad to be drafted but really wanted a 9-5 desk job as an actuary.
Round 5, Pick 170 - Bub Means, WR, Pittsburgh:
NFL: Means has the speed to dent the WR depth chart in New Orleans and is a good fit for what the Saints do. He has big, reliable hands and can stress a defense deep but never was a featured target in his three college stops.
CBS Sports: B+. Height/weight/speed specimen with the long-striding speed to take the lid off the defense. Tracks it well and can carry out classic possess WR duties on the boundary when he’s not going deep. Some YAC flashes but not his speciality. Prudent add, even though he’s a niche type who won’t separate a ton.
ESPN: The Saints fill another need, adding a wide receiver to account for the departure of Michael Thomas. Means ran a 4.43 second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine this year to go along with 721 yards and six touchdowns at Pitt. Means will join No.1 wideout Chris Olave, speedy Rashid Shaheed, A.T. Perry and veteran Cedrick Wilson. Dennis Allen said earlier in the offseason that they were looking for another pass catcher, and Means will join a new Saints coaching staff with a potentially revamped offense.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Is convinced if he messages the mods enough, they’ll finally listen to him.
Round 5, Pick 175 - Jaylan Ford, LB, Texas:
NFL: A thickly built thumper with monotone play speed, Ford thrives with instincts and tape study. Does he have enough athleticism to make it as more than a two-down defender? We shall see.
CBS Sports: B. Lengthy middle linebacker with some suddenness to his game. Wasted movement appear on film, so do impressive plays on the football in coverage. Not an overly physical or high-motor defender. Sifts through traffic well. Has starter traits because of his three-down ability. Although he must tackle more soundly.
ESPN: Ford will add linebacker depth and versatility, as he played both inside linebacker and outside linebacker at Texas. 35-year-old Demario Davis and Pete Werner will take the majority of the snaps, with new signee Willie Gay rotating in if the Saints are playing base defense. That means that Ford will likely be a depth piece and a special-teams player to begin his career.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Can only spell bananas by singing Holaback Girl. There is choreography too.
Round 6, Pick 199 - Khristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa:
NFL: He's not a great playmaker, but Boyd's mass and bull-like strength could give him a chance to be an early-down nose tackle. He's tough and reliable with good stamina.
CBS Sports: B+. Big-bodied NT with athletic prowess. Rushes tend to get high, and while he converts speed to power on occasion, if he sunk the pad level, he could be a very powerful defensive lineman. Pass-rush move arsenal isn’t barren just not relied upon often. Unique NT with DT abilities.
ESPN: The 24-year-old comes in with a lot of college experience, having started his career in 2018. The Saints like to rotate their defensive linemen, so he'll join a rotation that includes Bryan Bresee, Khalen Saunders and Nathan Shepherd. He said he prides himself on stopping the run, but also had 6.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks at Northern Iowa in 2023.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He is aiming to be the greatest player ever picked 199th.
Round 7, Pick 239 - Josiah Ezirim, OT, Eastern Kentucky:
NFL: Ezirim is a converted D-lineman with two years of OL play under his belt. His outstanding mass could serve him well if the Saints are patient with Ezirim's development.
CBS Sports: A. Starter-caliber size and length to play OT at the next level. Natural power jumps off the film. Better getting across the line than climbing to second level. Grip strength is very good. Well-balanced. Not a freaky athletic specimen but has clean film. More OT help for Saints.
ESPN: It wasn't a surprise that the Saints continued to look for offensive line depth after using a first-round pick on an offensive tackle. Ezirim was a former nose tackle who moved to the offensive line during the 2021 season and became a permanent starter at RT for the last two seasons. At 6-5 and 329 pounds, he'll be the heaviest player on the team next to new OL Oli Udoh. He'll start out as a depth player.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has a really nice fountain pen collection.

2024.05.14 00:46 TooZeroLeft A Halo What-If I just thought about: What if Halo 4 and Infinite were one and the same story?

Another topic of mine inspired me to think this What-If. In an alternate timeline, I think this idea would be very interesting, even though I love the Didact and a lot of 343 Forerunner lore additions (+ I think the Forerunner Trilogy is very well written), I still feel stuff got too convoluted to a point where I sometimes wonder what if the games ignored all that stuff.
This is just a What-If, I don't think the Forerunner books or Halo 4's story are bad, this is just a thought I had after seeing the similarities between 4 and Infinite.
Now for the question, What If Halo 4 and Infinite were one and the same?
Chief and Cortana still fall to Requiem, but the Banished are the main threats. Now, in this What-If, imagining 343 decided to stick to the original idea of leaving Forerunners as Humans or at the very least keep the mystery, the Harbinger, Endless and Skimmers are still the new threat, and 343 would build them in the game and future stories/lore, still giving us this new threat/new species, while at the same time keeping the Forerunners and the Flood as mysterious. The Prometheans would still be kept, here as the Forerunner machines that contain the Endless in Requiem, but in this alternate scenario their design would be much more reminescent of Bungie's Forerunner sleek design (looking similarly to the concept art of the Prometheans in the fan project SPV3.3).
Now the story could pretty much play almost the same to Halo 4, but with Infinite additions, such as Chief and Cortana (instead of the Weapon) being against the Banished, the Endless, the Skimmers and the Prometheans, helping the UNSC forces, crew of the Infinity and SPARTAN-IVs taken by the Banished. We still keep the core human characters such as Del Rio, Esparza, Lasky, Palmer, whereas Escharum would still lead the Banished forces on Requiem, with Atriox as the ominous leader in the shadows we see via videos and lore. We still keep the storyline simple by removing the Forerunner lore but still make the future interesting with the Harbinger and Endless (though we could remove them as being "worse than the Flood", but their immunity against the Array is interesting and could be kept). The emotional core of the story would still be the same with Cortana dying, Chief having to come at terms with his humanity, and his more close connection with Esparza through the history and then Lasky at the end could play very well.
Spartan Ops would then also naturally also work with a more open sandbox environment like Infinite, but in this What If, the environments wouldn't be exclusively Infinite-like since Requiem is a much more diverse biome.
I'm not a good writer at all and I could combine/put these ideas much better together, but these are just quick thoughts about an alternate story where these two games would be one and the same.

2024.05.13 21:59 AubreyE83 Formerly slow guy at the back becomes a race winner! (Backyard Ultra)

Race Information
• Name: Bad Ass Backyard Ultra
• Date: May 11, 2024
• Distance: 29.5
• Location: Rio Linda, CA
• Website: https://www.skybreakerracing.com/bad-ass-backyard-ultra/
• Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/11388611030
• Loops: 7

Goal Completed
Stay under 50 miles Yes
See if I like this kind of race Definitely
Have Fun Always
Win? Yes!
Pre-race:
I’m a 40 year old guy who sits at a desk all day (CPA). I started running in August of 2021 specifically to do a marathon, crossed the finish line that December and since then it’s been an addiction. I’ve now run 4 marathons, 2 50k, 3 70.3s, a full Ironman and in February as I switched from Triathlon to Ultras I did my first 50 miler. The 50 (in spite of showing I need to fix some blister issues) confirmed for me that ultra events are my favorite. I still like the triathlon training and how I feel with those more, but as far as events and culture, ultras are my thing. So anyway, I know I’m now an ultra runner, but I was a little lost as to what my next “A” race would be. I had the option of Ironman in October, Rio Del Lago 100 miler in November, or one of these backyard ultras that I’ve been hearing about. For those that are unaware, it’s basically a 4.2(ish) mile loop that is done every hour. No matter how fast or slow you run that loop, every hour on the hour another loop starts. This goes until people drop off and there is one person left. At the surface, this seemed like something that I’d like to inject directly into my veins. But that could just be me being naïve about how boring doing the same loop over and over would be, or how much I HATE stopping during runs. But the main draw for me, is that within 15 minutes of any race I’ve ever run in my life, the eventual winner is nowhere near me. Lining up every hour with the eventual winner and looking them in the eye just gets me irrationally hyped. That said, I’m coming off my first 50 miler, my toes are still healing (waiting on my big toe nail to fall off at this point, and my coach has BEGGED me to not go too deep in the well for this one. He wants a real training build up, some time to figure out blister issues and be legitimately prepared for a race. So the main goal here is to see if I want to throw 6 months of specific training at a race of this format.

Race Day:
So there are only 3 people signed up for this race. We even got an email from the race director asking if we still wanted to race. I get there with my wife, 3 kids and parents with tents, pop-ups, battery packs and iPads ready for this to be a long day. I have Maurten gels for 24 hours, huge packs of electrolyte mixes, I have my headlamp in case this goes into the night, 7 pairs of socks, 3 pairs of shoes, I have my heat gear, a tent, pop-up and a table. Quite frankly I may have had as much setup as the race director. My Bi-Carb and Ketones get drunk, we’re ready to rock.

Course:
This course was very strange. We’re out in the middle of farm land, and the first 1.7 miles is all exposed and it got up to 90 degrees at the peak of the day. What made it worse was a good mile of this section was not mowed, so we were trying to pave a path through calf high grass in places. After that you get to a legitimate trail that has a good bit of tree cover. One tiny hill for a grand total of 30 feet of elevation gain on the loop, so it’s pancake flat. There’s also a street crossing where there are a couple volunteers pressing the button to stop any cars coming by. Not a super busy street, so it was never a huge issue, but I did laugh a bit every time.

Race:
8am rolls around and I meet the two other people I’m running with. One guy just turned 33 so his goal was to do that many miles. Another is a woman in her 50s who had about the same goal for the day, but she was training for a run from the bottom of the UK to the top over 35 days or something. She’s done the Tahoe 200 before (something that’s on my bucket list), and I’m definitely a bit intimidated. That said, she says she has tickets for a comedy show later tonight, so I jokingly say I just need to hold out until she has to leave for that. Race starts and we decide we should run together a bit for the first lap just to figure out where the hell we’re going. We universally agree that the first section is BS, but the shade after makes all the difference. I start walking at the shade and let them run up ahead. I see them later on when I finish my loop.
My goal was to hit 50 to 55 minutes on each loop. First and foremost I don’t want to be sitting too long and thinking about pain or heat or whatever. To do this, I go at an easy pace for the heat section, walk when I get to the shade until I get to a 13 minute pace or so. Then I start running again. When I get to the tiny hill I start walking again until the pace drops in that range and then run into the finish line. I think I pegged every single lap right around 53 minutes. I’d grab a sponge from the ice bucket and wipe down my arms, sit down, eat my gel, put some ice in the pouch on my back, in my hat and down my pants. Every 2 laps I’d change socks and spray my feet down with Aquaphor to keep them lubricated. Every 4th lap I’d change shoes. I’d eat fruit or any snacks I was feeling while my dad would fill my water bottles, one with electrolyte mix and one with regular water. I’d usually get up from the seat between the 2 and 1 minute warning, mosey on over to the start line, sponge down my arms one last time and get ready to do it again.
Loops 1 and 2 are about the same. I send a check in text as I’m walking in the shade to my wife and coach which I call my “*.5 check in.” I grade my pace, attitude, pain level and fun being had with any notes.
On loop 2.5 I text that the young guy is struggling in the heat. I even texted my wife to have the race director check on him when I didn’t see him for a while, but he was ok. I talked to him a bit and he said he was using too much energy running the heat section so he was walking some of it. I figured that would be too much heat exposure for me, but he says he’s ok.
Loop 3.5 I am getting too much sweat in my eyes. I usually wear an American flag headband when I run, but in the heat (and with my thinning hair up top prone to sunburn) I’ve switched away to a bucket hat. Until now I had the headband on the outside of the bucket hat. I admit I’m choosing fashion/superstition over practicality and put the headband under the hat which immediately fixes the problem. I also have a fun conversation with the woman about how I’m doing this whole mathematical calculation for my pace which makes sense being a CPA. She says she’s running completely on feel, but that makes sense because she’s a massage therapist. The young guy struggles a lot and comes in at 57 minutes on lap 4 and drops.
Loop 4.5 I have made my first shoe switch. After wearing the Altras with the wide toe box the Hokas that I’ve run all my other races in feel horribly constricting and I have a good idea of why I keep getting blisters. I decide to change shoes back to the Altras after this lap. Woman says her goal is 4 more laps.
Loop 5.5 I write that she’s trying to mind game me and that she’s gone a bit negative and I need to be more positive to combat it. Now I know that this probably says a lot more about me than it does her. It’s possible and even likely that she was dancing at the start line of loop 6 because she liked the song. But in my head, in that minute it seemed like she was trying to show no weakness. She starts off that lap a little hot, but I keep my same pace. The surprising part is when I pass her about halfway through the heat section and it takes her a bit to catch up as I’m walking in the shade. She grumbles a bit about that section of uncut grass and asks how long I’m going and what happens if we both stop at the same time. Just some little cracks mentally that I note as she starts running again up ahead of me. Now usually at this point I don’t see her until the finish line because she’s been running 46 minute laps and I’ve been well behind at 53 minute laps. But midway through my walk section I see her just a little up ahead at a turn. Please know, I AM NOT PROUD of what happens next. It’s not time to run yet, but with her struggling a little bit, I bet that if I pass her she breaks. So I start running, and make sure to keep my breathing and heart rate in check. I run by, say “I’m gonna hustle on this one, I want a burrito.” This is not a lie, I did indeed want a burrito and when I came in the announcer asked how I was feeling to which I responded, “feels like half-time” as I had just finished 25 miles. Well half way into my burrito they tell me she’s going to drop. She congratulates me and I just have to finish my last lap to win. Yes, I mind-gamed a woman in her 50s to win. Now is she a badass woman in her 50s? Damn right she is. She’s done races I can only dream about right now, and I probably do it again given the chance. She later tells my dad that she asked herself what the hell she was doing once I passed her.
I decide lap 7 should be really strong, so I take off and do the heat section in sub 9 minute pace. This was a bad call. I decide my ego isn’t that big and walk in the shade a bit so I don’t pass out. I finish in about 49 minutes, get a cool sweatshirt, which I then proceed to wear in spite of the heat for pictures with my kids on a makeshift podium because I never have and probably never will win another race in my life.

Post-race:
A few small blisters. One of which is on my heel which is new, but as of Monday they’re already minimal, so 30 miles in that is a huge improvement from normal. I’m on the right track but still stuff to figure out. With the system I had I didn’t mind the stops at all in this race format. I also think my superpower is doing boring things over and over again, so the loop didn’t bother me at all. It’s almost certainly something I’m going to be throwing 6 months of training at for a big showing in November. Had a fun day with some really enjoyable people. Plus my coach didn’t yell at me for going too deep and this will be a quick recovery into some real training blocks. Overall loved it!

2024.05.13 21:54 SirLadthe1st Volleyball Nations League 2024 - Women's Week 1: Antalya TUR & Rio De Janeiro BRA - 14 to 19 may 2024 - r/volleyball discussion thread

Since the new season of VNL is literally just around the corner (less than 24 hours till the start of the first game!) I thought it will be nice to have weekly discussion threads, like past few couple of years.
This year the competition will be much more important than ever before, as each match counts towards the world ranking - and at the end of the competition top 5 highest ranked, not yet qualified teams will qualify to the Olympic Games!
Also, a slight change to the format of the competition is coming: no team will be relegated this season as, starting next year, 18 teams per gender wlll participate in the VNL (as opposed to just 16 now).
COMPETITION FORMAT + WHO IS PLAYING?
Each week, the 16 teams participating in the competition get split into two pools of eight teams - and both pools are hosted by different countries. Each team has four matches to play per week,. Despite the tournament being held in two locations at the same time, all the points the team get and all the sets they win will be counted towards a joint league table for all 16 teams.
Top 8 teams after 12 matches will qualify to the final play off round to be held in Bangkok, Thailand. There is and exception to this rule: Thailand, as hosts, are already pre-qualified to the play offs. That means that if they finish the regular round placed 9th on below, only top 7 teams will qualify and the 8th spot will be assigned to Thailand.
The Pools this week are:
Pool I (Antalya, Turkey): TURKEY, ITALY, POLAND, JAPAN, GERMANY, NETHERLANDS, BULGARIA, FRANCE
Pool II (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil): BRAZIL, U.S.A, SERBIA, CHINA, CANADA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, THAILAND, FRANCE
WHERE TO WATCH
A variety of national broadcasters will show certain games of the VNL either on TV or through online streaming. These include (among others) Polsat Sport for Poland, RAI Sport for Italy, L'Equipe for France and CBC Sports for Canada.
If you have no access to any of the channels broadcasting the VNL, you could subscribe to Volleyball World TV - its a paid subscrpition service launched by the FIVB and Volleyball World, which will broadcast all games of the competition. There is a 7-day free trial available, and prices start at 1.65eur (ca 2$/ month) if you purchase the yearly plan (19.99 EU12 months)
In the previous years, select VNL games were also broadcasted for free on FIVB's Youtube channel. I am not sure if this will be the case this year, but I will update the post with links to the free matches if there are any planned for this year.
