2024.05.13 09:18 Aliximery I'm 16 and feel like I'm wasting my life

I know that the title sounds ridiculous and that many will say that 16 is still very young. But for some reason it doesn't feel like it. I feel like I'm just constantly trying to catch up with time. I don't have anything that I'm passionate about. Sometimes I'll get intrested in something, daydream about becoming some great next thing , and then the flame just burns out. I'm so jealous of people who have a passion that they can stick to. I know many people around me who have something like this, and I feel like I'm behind them because I don't. In fact, many people in my class are very accomplished people. Two girls in my girls do ballet and dance in a theatre. Another girl in my class does competitive dancing. A guy from my class plays football and is also a math genius. Another plays tennis and travels a lot. I have a few people in my class who draw. Some sing and play instruments. A girl from a higher class that I'm acquaintances with plays in theatre. Another girl that I know, was awarded last year by our city as the most accomplished student. She was also the school president last year, was a part of the debates team, and a part of youth city council.
I could probably list more but I think you get it. Everyone around me is so accomplished, has something that they are passionate about while I feel like I have nothing. Whenever I find something that I think must be it, I end up losing intrest after awhile.
I took swimming classes for about 7 years. ( wasn't really something that I was passionate about. It's my parents that signed up ). I have tried learning a new language but always end up quitting for some reason. Currently I can only my native and English.
I used to draw a lot back when I was like 10/11 and watched a lot of tutorials on yt but nothing ever came out of it. I kind of stopped being intrested in it and now I'll draw something once every few months.
I also wanted to write my own book. ( I kind of still want to tbh ). But I feel like I can never form a good enough idea. In terms of writing, I also songwrite sometimes. I don't do it super often. And I'm more often than not dissatisfied with what I write.
Took guitar classes for about 2 years. I quit as the classes focused mainly on playing classical music. While I just wanted to know enough to be able to play the songs that I like. Right now, I barely play. I go through phases when I play guitar non stop for a few weeks , put it down and then won't even touch it for the next few monts. Not to mention my playing is extremely mediocre.
I used to sing too. I was in the church choir from when I was 8 up to when I was 10. I started taking singing classes when I was in 5th grade and resigned this year. It was a hard decision but next year I'll be starting the IB program. And I know from my teachers , and people in classes above me how hard it can be. I'll be taking chemistry, biology and english for HL and math , native and psycholoy for SL. And unfortunately with chemistry, I've heard that the two teachers we have are not the best at teaching. Which means that I'll have to study a lot on my own. This year I already struggled with trying to with mingling singing with all my school work and other responsibilities. And at the end decided that it's just not possible for me.
I was in the debates team this year. We managed to get second place in a national tournament. Unfortunately, I also won't continue next year. This was extremely time consuming and caused me a lot of stress. And next year I want to focus mainly on my studies. Maybe I'll take part in some single competitions but I'm not too sure about it yet.
Everything that I do just seems to ends after sometime. And it just frustrates me so much. I always wanted to be an accomplished person. When I was little, I used to be a " performer ", that's what my family memebrs always tell me. I would sing, dance, recite poems and make my own plays for them too watch. I remember some of them joking that I'm going to be a star. From people in my elementary I heard similiar things.
Nowdays I just hear that I used to be more out there. That I don't sing anymore. That I'm not as loud as I used to be. Sometimes I think that the reason why I can't get into anything is because my true passion is just trying to impress other people.
After I graduate, I'd like to study medicine to become a psychiatrist. My dream univeristy is Oxford. Which I know sounds ridiculous, knowing that I don't have the money to pay for the tution. I've heard of something called a full ride scholarship. Which apparently covers all the school expenses. But I've also heard that it's almost impossible to get. And that you really need to stand out to be able to get it. So as much as I want it, I know that it's probably not possible for me.
Right now, I'm trying to learn japanese. And I've also been thinking recently of learning how to figure skate. I'm not thinking of signing up to any class, I just want to try it on my own so I won't have anything obligations. I'm hoping that this time it'll work
I know this post is all over the place probably but I just wanted to say everything that's on my mind.

Weaknesses:

Career and lifestyle goals:
How much money is enough?
Enough to keep a family living a standard life without stressing out about money I guess? (I can be really good at saving up) Some guy said $70 000 a year is great so lets go with that (this kind of thing is different for each country though) Its better not to focus too much on money for now.
What type of jobs do you like?
Any job that involves creating things, it makes my existence feel meaningful. (Thats why I've been thinking of architecture for a long time. Buildings last centuries.)
Do you want a leadership position?
I wouldnt mind leading others but I dont really care about that. I would just prefer not to be one of those workers who have to do what someone else says all the time. I want to use my own creativity. Id like working with a group of equals or alone. I like working alone.
Do you want to eventually become an entrepreneur?
That idea doesnt seem so bad, in a way I like it, but it would probably be wayyy too tiring for me. I just want to create things and live a calm life. Constantly networking and thinking about business would be too overwhelming for me. But the idea of becoming an entrepreneur eventually might grow on me with time since it gives off a feeling of independence and like every day will be different, which I really care about. I just know that if I were to open a buisness Id invest all of my time and thought in it which wouldnt be ideal if i also want to live calmly and take care of my family.
As of right now, I've only had Architecture in mind. Although it has many issues, I cant think of anything else. What careers would you guys recommend? (Im 16F)

Hi guys , so i want to apply for DSA to NJC via TLL or Science research , i need some help
Ok so some context : i take Math , Comb Sci ( phys , chem ) , Pure Lit , Elect Hist , Tl and Eng . Im not the brightest student when it comes to humans and languages ( except tl) , i got a D7 in the last WA . but i got super high A1s for Math , Sci and Tl . so i decided on focusing on my main strong points : Sci and Tl for which i have entered competitions . So is grades on Prev exams rlly a factor or a turning point for DSA? , coz its only WA. I have alot of thing to show for when it comes to TLL and Sci ResearcH
For Sci research : I have entered Phys and chem olympiad , ntg much , oni participation . entered Sci buskers ( innovation competition) , made 3 research papers about neutrinos , polynomers and neutron decay. not only that but i do plan on going on a 1 month internship to a research related job , so is this enough to stand a chance ? ik many have shit ton of accolades but idk .
For TLL : I have entered two competitions : Tamil Oratical competiton and Comic writing competition , my grades for TL is always an A1 , i have done a book reports , poems . etc . not only that but i plan on going on an internship to a newspaper company to be a intern tl media assitant . i do hope that this good coz i heard TLL is not very competitve thus for my option , im okay wif doing h2 TL

2024.05.10 00:59 Zaki_1052_ My Senior AP Week Reflection - Extremely Long (5 exams, 9 total)

My Senior AP Week Reflection - Extremely Long (5 exams, 9 total)
Context:
I took AP Gov, Chem, Lit, and CSA. I have Calc AB on Monday still (I’m a Senior). I got 5s on APUSH, Lang, HuG, and a three in Bio.
Predicting: Gov-5, Chem-3, Lit-5, CSA-4, Calc-3/2 (hopefully the former). This is going to be an extremely long post of a lot of thoughts, so if you want the tldr, paste it into an LLM.
  1. AP Chem:
The MCQ could really have been a LOT better, I don’t think I did well on that at all, but I think I did alright on the FRQ; I only skipped one part on the second to last question because I was running out of time. But yeah, everyone says the MCQ was just...not it.
Predicting a 3 for this one. Regrets: I wish I had gone over a bit more calorimetry; I thought I knew it but I was a bit rusty on thermo and also equilibrium. This was probably my worst of the four I took so far. I need a 3 for any course credit but a 4 will mean I place into OChem.
I’m used to answering a lot of MCQs like they’re math questions, so some of those definitely threw me off. But just generally, most people seem to have found the MCQ difficult so I think the curve will be decent this year.
Oh! Also, I should mention that this is my teacher's first year teaching - I think at all - as she mentioned having to shadow others at my school. She wasn't particularly good or bad, just kind of there. Kind of like AP Bio. This is the shortest one; there isn’t much to say except that it was difficult, but I passed.
I just regret not taking it last year because it was apparently super easy (and had an amazing teacher at my school). This was probably equivalent to my AP Bio Sophmore year (3), accounting for how much I studied of course (maybe not as much as I should have). Overall: decent, could've been better.
  1. AP Gov:
This was probably my best one, the MCQ was, like, insultingly easy. I took AP Human Geography a few years ago and thought that was the easiest possible exam, but this definitely takes the cake (same teacher btw). I’m probably just used to my teacher’s really bad wording and slightly opinionated multiple choice tests, but this was extremely clear and intuitive in comparison.
Can’t think of any I got wrong, but for the practice I got a few points off the final, this seemed slightly easier. I finished in just under half the time (40 minutes or so). Napped.
For the FRQ, I was pretty much relying on my experience from APUSH last year because we didn't do any in class (weird last minute schedule changes at my school and my teacher ran out of time to practice or really talk about it at all). Even so, I found these a lot easier than APUSH.
A lot of it was either common sense or something I just felt confident in. Humanities have always been my strongest (5 on HuG and APUSH), which is ironic because I'm a STEM major, but these FRQs were just easy.
Had a little under half time left when I finished and spent another 20 minutes looking over it, but I filled out a (kinda cramped) page per question for 1-3 and then an extra 2 pages on that last essay. Looks like I got Question Set 2 (they just released).
I used all the documents (apparently you don't need to, and there's not even a sophistication point??), and argued for social moments, using pluralism and factions from Fed 10 as my counterargument, and talking a LOT about the example of the CRM and MLK with the right to assemble and such.
Protests were already on my mind because I'm going to a UC and I just happened to argue with my parents about this for hours over the weekend, so I got lucky that was my Prompt. Overall definitely predicting a 5, would not be surprised if either I or my friend who I usually compete with got a perfect score (they're going to an Ivy).
  1. AP Lit:
I took this one online, and I already got a 5 on Lang so I apparently didn't even need to take it (found out after I submitted college apps and was looking at credit charts lol). Oh, taking it digital, we started about an hour late due to tech problems, which was annoying. But…
I thought it was pretty decent! I really loved my teacher this year (hopefully my friends don't know my reddit account, but if so, yes I'm sorry he's very terrible). Overall just an amazing class experience.
Seriously though, the guy literally has a PhD in British Literature, he's amazingly insightful and I felt like I learned a lot this year; I definitely would not have gained as many skills as I did analyzing poetry without such a good teacher, and even my big prose essay happened to benefit, so it all worked out!
It just so happens that his two favorite pieces of literature are Hamlet and Madame Bovary. I used the latter for the prompt about missing something (specifically love), but Hamlet would have been great for indecision as well. I reused a lot of my points from our final about how when we think we achieve our desires we're never really satisfied, and how Emma was living in a fantasy world of fairy tale romance.
I also went over the blind beggar and how he saw the missing void in her heart, and how discomfited she was that he recognized that which she refused to — all her relationships were never true love — they were always purely sexual and all her spending and debt that she used to fill that piece of her spirit that was missing in marriage and religion would eventually drive her to suicide.
My teacher's honestly a bit Freudian (sorry, it's true!), but Hamlet obviously is probably even easier to talk about though I don't have the energy to plan another essay rn. Anyways, I'm fairly confident in a 5 for this one as well, even if a couple of the poems from the MCQ (dreams?) kinda threw me off.
Luckily, my teacher gave us a decent framework for setting up complex theses, and forewarned us that they'd ask us to connect the literary technique with the theme (literally our final), so I felt pretty prepared for the other FRQ. He suggested that we say something like:
"While on the surface, the poem appears to be about …, it is actually a vehicle for the author to…", or: "While most readers might conclude that …, on further inspection, the author actually...", which I thought was really smart for forcing yourself to think in complexity rather than giving an easy answer. I know it's a tad bit pretentious though!
My best friend is in the other AP Lit class with a different teacher, and his experience was vastly disparate to mine. Sounds like she tried -futiley- to teach to the exam, while mine went the approach of enhancing our overall Literature and analysis skills. I think you can infer which one I prefer.
Anyways, that one really all came down to the teacher, and I can definitely see how this one (especially the MCQ) could've been harder than last year, especially because while Lang was more SAT-like (790/800), this was decidedly not.
It's like, not even the questions that were bad, the answer choices were just such that you had to choose the least bad answer. Oh, and the nature/summertime thing was weird in that it was way too simple to talk about, but I managed like everyone else did.
  1. AP CSA:
This one was probably the one I'm most disappointed in myself for. I kind of expected a 3 on Chem (even if I was previously gunning for a 4), but I need a 4 for college credit in CompSci. Over the past year, I had gotten really into ML/AI, the former for my final Bioinformatics project on DNA Methylation, and the latter of which I actually learned JavaScript for. I already knew Python from my own curiosity, though I'm rusty and never took the class or exam.
That being said, I was pretty turned off by the teaching of CSE in general, though I'm not sure if that's the CSA class/exam or a more broad failing of just not knowing how to impart programming and make students want to do it (10 people took the exam at my school; there's a problem.).
Just the methodology of testing for it kinda made me hate it, even though I have a lot of fun coding on my own. The fact that MCQ is all about tracing code and is essentially math, where you're the computer and you're calculating what would be put into the compiler just seems stupid to me.
Regardless, from a student perspective, the MCQ was fine, as in I did well enough on it, not that I think it's a valid way to test, though I have no idea how else it would be. I was running slightly low on time, but I knew I would be, mainly because I hate how tedious it is even if the MCQ is technically easy (which it was).
Anyways, enough complaining. Onto the FRQ! It was...OK? Usually I'm pretty decent at writing code, classes and the like, but I wasn't quite expecting the specifications to be so weirdly worded. I guess it parallels the unclear expectations you receive doing CS jobs irl though, so that's fine. Also, last year was apparently harder?
Oh, I should mention that my teacher is retiring next year, so she was extremely checked out and the whole class was basically self-study on Runestone. I'll admit that as a Senior taking CSA as a 7th period, I found more important things to do than to practice writing code I thought I was pretty decent at, so that's definitely on me.
With that said, I didn't fully finish the last question of the FRQ, and while they weren't overly difficult generally, as in I could figure out the concepts they wanted (like math.random) and I managed to remember most of the syntax I had neglected, I definitely should have reviewed Arrays a bit more, as time was a big issue on this one.
Overall, I'm still predicting a 4 for CSA, but if I get unlucky with the curve I could get a 3, which would suck but still give me some course credit for college, just no exemption. My general review would be that it wasn't bad, it was even decent; the test on average was kinda like the Chem FRQ. That's all.
  1. Calc AB:
Obviously, this one is on Monday, so I haven't taken it yet, but I'd like to offer my predictions and thoughts. Math has always been my worst subject by far, but I'm trying for a 3 for college credit, as my Uni is offering a full ride for a month of summer where I can take the rest of Calc 101.
After that, I plan to just take a Semester's worth more of Math (up to Linear Algebra), and then be done. But to do that, I need to place and get a 3. When I took the final practice, I was exactly a point and a half below, so I have some more studying to do.
I should mention that my teacher this year for Calc AB is widely regarded as one of, if not the most, worst/hardest teacher at my school. It's definitely a weed out class, and most of my friends took it over the summer to place into BC with a good teacher rather than suffer my current one.
While I would usually differentiate between a bad teacher and a hard one (my Lit is the perfect example of the latter but not the former), Calc AB is both. I've never felt comfortable asking questions to her, she frequently blows off students, and her attitude just generally makes me hate math even more than I already did.
This year has been a lot of self-study and torture, so I'm really gunning for that 3 to prove her (and myself) wrong. I'm actually taking the class P/F because it does horrible things to my GPA (4.3 instead of 4.66). Anyways, wish me luck on this one!
  1. APUSH:
I took APUSH and Lang last year, and while I didn't really feel the need to study for my 5 in Lang, APUSH was my most difficult class that I probably studied for the most, but my teacher Junior year was probably the best I've ever had, or at least my favorite of all time (my current AP Lit might be technically better).
Yeah, my APUSH teacher really encouraged me to push through on that class and sincerely made me interested in US History. He's also probably why I did so well in AP Gov, so I owe him a “Thank You” when I get back. I ended up applying UCs, which doesn't take rec letters obviously, but if I had requested one, he would definitely be it!
Anyways, I know an amazing teacher isn't possible for most people, but I wish everyone luck on their APUSH Exam on Friday; you can do it!! I got a 5 when I worked for it, and you can too!
7-9. Other APs: Bio, etc,
There isn't much to say about Lang or AP Human Geography. I found them both pretty easy, intuitive, and common sense. Prepare, of course (specifically for the course content of the latter), but they're both guarenteed 5s if you put the work in.
For AP Bio, that was the biggest regret of my high school career. It's actually my major (Biology: Bioinformatics), and I got a 3. I just know I was close to a 4, but also that it was partly my fault for letting bad study habits from COVID bleed into the beginning of my Sophmore year, and I never really caught up.
AP Bio is one of those courses where you need to be prepared from the get-go, especially if your teacher has a somewhat lax but competent teaching style. Not to make excuses for myself or anything, but I actually got COVID the week before, missed my AP HuG Exam (had to do the retake), and recovered the day before the AP Bio.
My brain and studying were just not up to par at all, and I'm confident that if I had worked as hard as I did for APUSH the year after, I definitely would've gotten a 4 or even a 5. So, I wish everyone luck as well on Bio next Thursday, and hope you're prepared!
Conclusion:
For everyone else, I'll be lurking next week around this sub after I take Calc, and I'm confident in everyone to do their best! I'll probably turn off my notifs tomorrow afternoon, so if anyone has questions before then feel free to ask and I'll attempt to respond! Congrats if you got this far in the post, lol, and I hope it was helpful!

2024.05.09 07:43 Nawt_A_Zaddi3 Pls help and guide me to get a good score in maths and odia [chse , +2 2nd yr science student]

I was a cbse student till 10th, my school doesn't have a proper odia teacher so they didn't have odia subject in 9th-10th, so we didn't get a option to choose between our language. And i studied hindi bcz of this i lost touch in odia subject after 8th, was only able to speak and read in odia nothing more than that (i thought this is enough). After getting a nice +2 science college, i was forced by my father to take odia subject, and also i didn't knew abt the this system about when you take science pcm is compulsory, so had to take maths (neet aspirant). So telling my problem abt odia subject is, i thought ik how to read write and speak but found out it's not enough for study and learn, it has alot of tough words and poems which I can't remember quickly, it takes me to 20 mins to learn a 5 lines qs/ans and yk how big answers you've to write to get full marks in long qs, and i somehow managed to pass in 11th grade i.e +2 1st yr but now my clg for +2 2nd yr is starting from 18 may, and i need guidance how to start that subject (I've to manage enough time for studying pcb, cz I'm a neet aspirant amd I've to practice atleast 70qs per day to get a good score in neet too) SO CAN YOU GUYS SUGGEST ME YT CHANNEL WHICH COVER +2 2ND YR ODIA IN A NICE SIMPLE WORDS AND SHORT LENGTH VIDEO PER CH.
Now coming to maths. I don't have a problem w studying maths but for a good score idk what books to prefer like which cover good qs and covers chse syllabus perfectly also it's hard to find solutions in the internet for chse maths. We had a elements of mathematics book for 1st yr, and i struggled finding it's solutions cz it was not proper website like other webs do, there're a bit redirect links too. I mean suggest a book which has atleast ans in the back of the book unlike that elements of maths. ALSO PLS SUGGEST A GOOD YT CHANNEL FOR MATHS TOO, cz when i saw some yt channels for chse maths, they've literally lengthy video for solving couple of qs from exercises. Pls suggest a yt channel which cover chapters in less parts and focus on concept and solving only good qs rather than solving exercises. (I hope you guys understand what i mean)
Pls pls help me guyss

High school projects start from $10 per page, while undergraduate papers cost $13 per page. Bachelor papers cost $19 per page, and Professional papers cost $21 per page.
You can also select your writer based on how much you are prepared to pay. There are three tiers: basic writer, advanced writer, and top writer. Advanced writers and top writers are native English speakers, but they cost more to hire.
You should enter your assignment details into the site so you can get a full idea of the costs before you pay someone to undertake your project.

If you use PaperHelp frequently, you'll build up credits with the company, and with this, you'll enjoy extra savings. Sometimes, you may be able to get as much as 15 percent off.

To get started, you have to make a deposit to the website, but the writers won't get this until you have actually hired someone. When you have, the deposit goes to the writer, and the rest of the funds will be held by the site.
You can then release the full payment when you are happy with the writing help you have received.

Can You Talk To The Assignment Writers?

EssayPro makes a point of personalizing its writers, so you can view all the applicants that you might end up working with, and decide who is right for you. To select a writer, complete an order form with the details of your assignment.
You can read the writer's reviews and their "about me" information before you settle on your assignment helpers, ensuring you get a great match for your assignment.

Is EssayPro Confidential?

Like other online assignment help services, EssayPro keeps its user information confidential to prevent discovery. You should be able to have someone write your assignment online without anybody being able to tell that you have done this.
You can upload samples of your own writing so that the assignment helpers are able to see your style. They can then copy this to create a university assignment that sounds exactly like your work.

What If There Are Issues With The Assignment Services?

One of EssayPro's biggest draws is that it offers unlimited free revisions. You can simply request that the assignment helpers change things, and you'll have a professional assignment that you are satisfied with in no time.
You should also receive plagiarism free work, and you can request a free originality report if you are concerned about this.
However, there can still be issues when you get your assignment online, and if you do have problems, you can get in touch with the customer support team. This offers 24/7 support, so you don't have to panic if you need assignment help in the middle of the night.
The site also offers a team of QA experts who will step in if something goes wrong with the academic writing services. They can review the assignment online and make sure that it fits the criteria that you provided.

When Do I Need To Submit The Assignment?

If you want a cheap assignment, you need to submit it as soon as possible - but you can get very quick turnaround times with EssayPro. Papers can be completed in less than 6 hours, which is very important if you have a university assignment due soon!
The success rate is likely to be higher if you give the writers time to complete the assignment to your satisfaction.

BBQPapers: Top-Rated Do My Homework Website

This assignment writing service provides plagiarism free content, and offers expert writers with broad knowledge in an enormous variety of subjects.
Whatever assignment type you are working on, you should be able to find the right person on this website.
It's important to note that BBQPapers offers quite a few kinds of assignment help services.
You can request writing, or just editing or proofreading if you want to do the assignment yourself but you just want a little bit of assistance making it shine.
This is worth bearing in mind if you want to pull your grades up, but don't want to fully depend on somebody else to write your essay.
Each essay will involve in-depth research, proper citations, formatting, and a thorough analysis of the topic.
The writer will conduct research according to the assignment requirements, and only the best writers are permitted to work for BBQPapers.

What Does BBQPapers Cost?

If you are in higher education, you should expect to pay more, because of the increased complexity level.
The site charges $5.85 per hundred words for high school papers, $6.77 per hundred words for college papers, and $10.64 per hundred words for Ph.D. papers.
That can add up quite fast, especially for assignments with high word counts, but you'll still get access to experienced professionals that are capable of writing good academic essays.
If you fill in an order form on the website, you'll be able to get an idea of what your paper will cost to write.
One of the nice features of BBQPapers is that it offers a loyalty program, so if you frequently use the site to create research papers for you, you'll pay smaller fees.
Every writing assignment you send in will earn you 1 point per dollar spent.
When you have 750 points, you'll get 5 percent off, while 1500 points will give you 10 percent off, and 3000 points will give you an impressive 15 percent off.
For somebody who regularly gets assignment help online, this can make the process more affordable - so it's worth considering this.

Can You Talk To The Homework Helpers?

One of the nice things about this service is that you will be put in touch directly with the academic writers working on your assignment.
You can then discuss the requirements of the assignment with the writer to ensure that you get a high quality assignment at the end of the process.
The team at BBQPapers will work on finding you the best writer for your academic paper. The site claims to take only the most qualified writers from the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
When you put in a request, you can tick a box that requests native English speakers work on your assignment - or you can just ask for a fluent writer if you think that will suffice for your piece of work. Either way, you can get the perfect writer for your assignment.

Is BBQPapers Confidential?

Yes, BBQPapers makes efforts to ensure that all data is kept confidential, only giving the necessary information to the online assignment helpers to minimize the risk of discovery.

What If There Are Issues With The Assignment Services?

If you have any problems with the service you receive, you can contact the customer support team.
There's also a 10 day window for requesting free revisions, so if students raise concerns, these can be addressed. Furthermore, you have a 60-day money back guarantee, meaning that you can recover the costs if the assignment isn't up to your standards.

When Do I Need To Submit The Assignment?

It's important to make sure you are submitting your assignment in a timely manner, so that the writers have enough turnaround time to give it back to you.
Although BBQPapers says it can take as little as 3 hours to return a project, it will sometimes take longer, and you don't want your important uni assignment to be late because you haven't got it back yet.
Make sure you create assignment deadlines so the writer knows how long they have to complete the piece.

2024.05.07 04:11 Tannhausergate2017 AI and NDEs

I am deeply interested in both AI and NDEs. I think that AI is really going to upend out already very hyper-changing society even more so. Much more so, esp as AI gets to be exceptionally advanced, which, by most expert accounts, is not far off.
As such, I truly think mankind will soon have a gigantic crisis of confidence and struggle against feelings of inferiority and even worthlessness as AI easily and quickly outstrips our best and brightest in pretty much every endeavor. Math, science, law, medicine, athletics, ballet, and even art, writing, music, sculpture, etc.
When I was a kid in the 1980s, the old Hollywood bromide about AI is that it couldn’t compose a poem or a sonnet, and that things like that is what makes us “human” and thus “better” than a machine.
Actually, AI can now compose poems and sonnets and it does arguably much better than we do.
So…
For the actual NDE-ers, do you have any insight/perspective from your NDE to counter AI’s likely effect on us as to our worth as humans? I think the NDE-er perspective is now needed more than ever in this arena.

2024.05.05 08:26 bb250517 Math should be taught at a higher level in school

The reason why math is often times regarded as useless and way too time consuming, is because most people don't get why math is taught in schools in the first place. For example, when you have to dribble in PE while hopping backwards like Apache commander, you think "this is a weird exercise, but I guess it trains hand-eye coordination and stamina". When you are reading countless boring poems from hundreds of years ago in Literature class, you think "yeah this poem is boring as shit, but at least it trains media literacy".
The point of math education is to learn how to use the tolls provided, how to think outside the box (as much as I hate this expression). You don't realise this when you are learning base level maths, I see this in my classmates and even my Mom. Whenever I did homework at her's, she would always make comments about how it's useless for us the learn all the different equations and formulas.
For example I was helping a friend of mine who is in base maths get ready for our final exams. There was a task with instructions like this: "On a circle there are 4 vertices, A;B;C;D, after connecting the ones next to each other, AB is the twice the length of the radius of the circle. BCD angle is 120 degrees,..." Also some other data was given regarding the lengths of other sections. What he got from reading the task is that there is circle with a quadrilateral inside it. What I got was that there is a cyclic-quadrilateral, meaning opposing angles add up to 180 degrees, AB side is the diameter of the circle so we can maybe do something with law of Thales, there is a given degree and some sides to it, so we can use law of cosines if it's needed. He is not stupid or anything, we both go attend a top 5 high-school in our country , and I'm convinced if he was in high level math in the last 4 years, he would've got all the info I got, but base level is just simply not teaching them this, it teaches them to use 1 out of 10 formulas they learned, based on information being handed to them on a silver platter.
The fact is that when all you do in math is look at a few given data and just have to substitute them into 1 of the 3 formulas you learned for this type of task, you will think "how in the hell is this useful?". You only get how useful it can be when you get only a fraction of the data required to solve something and you have to get the others by combining formulas, seeing how different laws chain together, how a seemingly unrelated thing can massively impact the speed of which you solve a task at.
This way math wouldn't be regarded as a chore for the most of society and people would actually be better at it, it would lead to higher levels of education

2024.05.05 04:17 Humphrey_Wildblood I teach in China. Students always say maths and Chinese are the most difficult.

I get the maths, but Chinese? In what way is learning Mandarin in a mainland school so difficult for native students? I see loads of 默写. Is it the demands on handwriting? Or the rote memorization of poems? Or writing essays?

Hi, all. u/Tsumatra1984 introduced me to Preiss's Japanese hints this morning, and I saw this quote:
"One more thing. We got some special advice from Mr. Preese [sic] for our japanese [sic] readers. That is to start by solving the pictures/paintings. To do so, you must decode the poem by solving the combinations of numbers that are in the poems."
I spent the day doing just that, and wanted to share my results. They are interesting to say the least.
Here's my spreadsheet.

2024.04.26 23:10 Kara67848 It's hard for me to fight against blackpill thoughts.

I want to start this post by apologizing if this is just a pointless ramble/vent, but I have written some poems about this situation (which is my way of expressing my feelings) and I just don't feel better, so I figured it would be better if I just talk about it. If you want to leave some advice or say something about this, please do it out of respect, insulting each other doesn't help anyone.
I'll be a 100% transparent here: My "suffering" comes from the fact that I follow people that are sex workers on Twitter, so they portray their lives as a life of constant sex with lots of people; I don't know if this is true (probably they do it because it helps them sell their onlyfans or whatever), but the thing is that they have sex regularly.
These people talk about polygamy, open relationships and sex with their friends, which makes me feel inadequate due to my current social situation: One friend with which I talk on the weekends, my family and that's all my social connections.
There is one influencer that is safe to say that I'm dangerously obsessed with. She is white and has green eyes (this is important, you'll see why). I would never do nothing IRL, but I have these thoughts of hatred towards her and her "sex partner" because she confirmed that he is her high school crush, and she talked about how insanely hot she finds him and how exciting it is to have sex regularly with him and knowing that I didn't have a woman find me "hot", not "attractive", but "hot" makes me feel bad about myself. On top of this she said that he's in an open relationship, which makes me feel even worse because this means he has sex with two women, or even more, something that, for me, looks impossible due to my height, race and fear of women. Sometimes she posts about how she "need cuddles because she feels lonely" and I'll be honest, that bothers me and makes me feel angry, mainly because my thought process is: "You have regular sex, you have friends, you have money, you have family, you have everything I desire for and you say that you "need cuddles"".
Going back to the main topic, the blackpill sounds truly logical and it's hard for me to not feel hopeless to the thought of being alone for the rest of my life. I've tried to be kinder to animals and people (which makes me feel a little bit better whenever I can help someone or an animal), exercise, learn math, study languages, study physics, to go out more, to beat my fear of talking to women, I've even tried buddhism, which I think it's the only thing that's helped my animical state because it taught me to respect people (even though I still have thoughts of hatred towards the woman and the man I talked about, at least I can and actively try to fight them), and I'm really capable of not acting on my emotions and not insulting or hurting people, but I still feel these huge emotions, which is a big problem.
Another problem is my height (170 cm or 5'7 I think) and race: I'm hispanic (mexican) so I think that I'm inferior in the dating market (which is true from what I've seen). I've seen that a lot of "Latinas" desire white men, and even there's a saying here in Mexico that familiy members say when you are in a relationship with a white person that goes: "Para mejorar la raza", which means, literally, "So you can improve the race". Sometimes I wish I could take my skin, make it whiter so I had more of a chance and change my eyes so they were green or blue. Due to my lack of practice with speaking english in real life, I have an accent which makes me paranoid; I think that whenever I speak it people can pick up on the fact that I'm not a native speaker and they will perceive me as stupid or less competent, this isn't relevant (I live in Mexico), but it's something that makes me feel uneasy and contributes to my insecurities.
"The dating within your own race" thing makes me feel like I'm nothing but my nationality, because even Latinas desire white men. I've also seen these videos of Asian women (not to mention the insane amount of Asian american women who are in relationships with white men) putting white men in a pedestal and these videos of white dudes going out in Philippines, Japan or any other asian country and there's like 10 women around them. This makes me feel like there's no hope, no matter what I do, I am nothing more than the place I was born in.
Because of my perception of my race, I have a terrible fear of white women, especifically blonde women and women with blue or green eyes. This started on 7th grade, when there was this girl with beautiful green eyes. I felt a really intense fear when I was near her, and one day I saw her on a mall, and I almost passed out because of the fear I felt when I saw her. After she rejected me, I started developing an insane obsession for green eyed women, which was proportional to my fear of them.
Other thing that makes me feel bad is my dick size/thickness. If you've been on Twitter this week you maybe know of this man called "girthmaster". He is a porn actor and he has an abnormally thick penis. Women always say that size doesn't matter, but every woman on there is saying that they want to fuck him so bad because of the thickness of his penis, which makes me think that no woman will be happy with the size of my penis (my dick is barely average, both on thickness and length).
The thought process of the people that are out of the blackpill thing is that "You don't have to be a supermodel or be white to have a girlfriend". I agree. I'm not a supermodel, but I'm by no means physically ugly, and I know it. But this is how it works in my mind: Maybe I can get a girlfriend, yes, but in the back of her head she will always desire a man that is more than me. More muscular, with more money, with a bigger penis, with a whiter skin, with blue eyes, blonde or taller than me. She will be with me, but she will desire a man that is better than me.
Therapy is not an option because it's too expensive, I'm really scared of going out alone (insecurity in Mexico) and my mom doesn't believe in it (I'm 17 years old and I live with my family).
I don't know where to start, where I can make friends or continue my social life, I've been homeschooled since I was 12 years old, so I've been living in really heavy social isolation for 5 years which made me miss out on a lot of experiences that help you develop socially.
There's so much that I left out, but this is getting long and I doubt anyone will read it all the way through. Sorry if this is too long, but I've been thinking so much about this that last night I only had 30 minutes of sleep and I really needed to let it out.
I'd really appreciate it if you had some advice for me. Please don't try to invalidate my situation, I know that, maybe in your perspective, sex and women isn't everything and maybe you can live without it, but I ask you to please put yourself in my shoes and understand how I feel and why I desire to be loved by a woman.
Thank you if you read the full post!
TL;DR: I have a complex with my height, race and I'm hopeless about being truly loved.

2024.04.26 19:44 firedragon77777 The Singularity Debate

On a recent post I made, I got into a debate about the singularity with https://www.reddit.comdonaldhobson/s/OgimEwugHm and I'm wondering what you all think. Here are some excerpts from the discussion.
Me : I find the typical idea of a singularity to be rather absurd, because it completely ignores the "tech tree" and assumes a sentient AI is right around the corner just a few steps up from Chatgpt and that it'll automatically be able to just will itself into being exponentially smarter, all before we even get major interplanetary colonies going, heck many singularity estimates place a fricking superintelligence before basic nuclear fusion. Superintelligence is the destination, not the journey. It's a reward, not a cheat code we get for free. Even if we can somehow make a truly human-equivalent AGI without first having mastered the human brain (something I bet will be happening parallel to interstellar missions or perhaps a few decades after) and we're able to immediately give it framejacking capabilities that doesn't mean we get a true superintelligence, just a fast thinking humanoid mind. A human could spend eons studying but they'd never be a civilization on their own, their brain has fundamental limitations and even the benefits of being digital (perfect memory, multitasking, framejacking, etc.) wouldn't make us any closer to superintelligence or even our current collective intelligence as a civilization than a chimp would be to us if given the same advantages, and even if that was enough to allow it to improve itself that doesn't automatically mean it continues linearly, let alone exponentially or hyper-exponentially.
https://www.reddit.comdonaldhobson/s/OgimEwugHm : The tech tree in games is balanced. To make it a good game. You seem to be assuming a sort of "fairness". If you had been around 100,000 years ago, looking over the different animals, you might have said "some animals have claws, some have big muscles, some run fast, some breed fast. There is no cheat code.". From the perspective of evolution, and endless aeons of back and forth between animals with no one species being clearly superior, it sure looks like modern humans hit a cheat code. "There are no cheat codes" is not a law of physics. We didn't build planes by mastering the birds wing. Intelligence in the abstract is not a complicated phenomena. Evolution doesn't do things the simplest way. In your world model, you see the human brain as equal to intelligence, both irreducibly complicated. There is an algorithm called AIXI which, given unlimited compute, displays the maximum possible intelligence. This is known today and only a few lines of code. ChatGPT can write poems and play chess and do all sorts of things, despite being some pretty simple code with no pieces explicitly hardcoded for those tasks. Evolution selected humans to make stone tools and play tribal politics, and accidentally got a mind that can sometimes do quantum physics. Put all those pieces together and it suggests that there is some algorithm, not much more complicated than ChatGPT, that is a general superhuman intelligence with a reasonable compute demand. I suspect I'm living in a world where ASI requires another 3 breakthroughs on the scale of backpropagation and transformer architecture.
Me : Don't get me wrong, superintelligence is kind of a cheat code, just not nearly as much as you think, and AGI definitely isn't one since if it was we would've gone singularity back in the stone age or something. What I'm proposing is still probably one of the fasyest technology timelines here with all of science being done in a few centuries and us speed running the kardeshev scale to the point of a full lightweight dyson statite swarm by maybe 2400-500, and a genuine full k2 civilization long before the end of the millenia, and a complete shattering of anything even vaguely resembling human society, with a world of septillions of immortal million IQ (often vastly more) ultra-benevolent beings so peaceful and enlightened they don't even need a government to make them all get along (with the exception of msybe a few experiments gone wrong after being rushed, giving rise to genuine eldritch horrors, but we'll ignore that for now, besides your worldview would be dominated exclusively by such horrors). However even compared to my ridiculously optimistic proposal of mere centuries making the biosphere and human civilization completey obsolete, your worldview is cartoonish. Yes the speed of progress is breathtaking but our cheatcode is likely much farther away than you think. Superintelligence will arise from the world of messing around with our psychology, building early dyson swarms, self replicating factories and probes, beings hundreds or thousands of tiems smarter than us being the norm, and massive colony ships pushed by beams of starlight, not the world of fossil fuels, memes, flat-earthers, covid, porn, tiktok, aging, and the last few generations of farmers that actually use fields instead of skyscrapers. Our cheat code will arrive one day my friend, but alas we are not there yet. Again, ask any neuroscientist how intelligence even works and they'll shrug. Algorithms are just fundamentally incapable of actual intelligence, heck even the pioneers of artificial intelligence admitted the name was kind of a joke, the machines weren't actually thinking it was just equations. There is no "maximum possible intelligence" especially not from primitive algorithms, intelligence goes up exponentially with complexity, it (and consciousness) are emergent properties kinda like the wetness of water. The hardware is no longer exponential, we need to build up the software for a few decades then move past the idea of software altogether by figuring out how real intelligence and consciousness work via our brains and then backtrack and find the most efficient form of that, then we add more complexity to the system while actually understanding what that complexity is (because it we don't understand it then it's not really complexity, just a really powerful version of the current PSYCHOLOGY [not software anymore]). Also humans are really only cruel to animals through carelessness (something superintelligences would lack) or because we WANT something from them, but there's nothing a superintelligence would want from us and we're a tiny speck to take care of which is great because it's mind is so complex it notices every speck of dust and has resources so vast even a trillionth of those resources would please the slightly larger specks of dust (us). And there's such a vast gap between them and us that we CAN'T throw together something so good it becomes them quickly, not all of us even wipe our own asses yet, through vast effort we can make things better than us that are better at making things better and so on, but even an artificial mind equivalent to our own is a big deal for our little ape brains much like interstellar travel, not something Elon Musk can throw together for a few billion dollars in a decade or two.
https://www.reddit.comdonaldhobson/s/OgimEwugHm : Ah. I think we are getting to the fundamental disagreement. I think intelligence is a specific type of fancy equation. And the likes of chatGPT are what you get when you get parts of the equation mostly right, but other parts wrong/missing. On a related note, submarines don't actually swim, it's just propellers. This seems entirely vibes based reasoning. Like you have a mental notion of how scifi various technologies are. And ASI feels too scifi to come yet. There is nothing about ASI that requires a dyson swarm or colony ship. They are independant branches on the tech tree. If we totally neglect research on one branch while pushing on the other, we can get the tech to arrive in all sorts of different orders. If that's your fast timeline, what's your slow one like. NO way does it take that long.
Me: It's not just a matter of not having the means to make the edit, it's also not even knowing what edits to make in the first place. We don't even understand what we have let alone how to improve. The best we've got is blindly increasing brain size but there's no guarantee that'll even do anything. A human level AGI wouldn't even know where to start with improving itself anymore than we do, sure it'd have some advantages but most of that advantage would be having the knowledge used to create it which is a luxury we don't have for ourselves, but knowing how something works doesn't mean you know how to make it better. If you were given all the tools needed to make your phone better you wouldn't make any progress on that because you have no clue how and you can't discover that knowledge on your own through research because that takes countless people and decades of research woth advanced equipment even more perplexing to you. There's things we can reasonably expect based on how difficult they actually are. You're not getting social media before steam engines despite those two being completely unrelated. Also you'd only expect weird anomalies in the order of the tech tree if we develop an obsession with some technology and it turns out to be relatively easy to research and develop. Maybe if a full percentage of our population were researching AI we could get sort of close to your timelines (probably not though cause' economy). Also we need to consider the fundamental nature of the technology itself, algorithms aren't MINDS. we aren't equations, we're a complex ever-changing system of chemicals. Intelligence is something that seems to be outside the fundamental workings of transistors running algorithms in the first place. Also your analogy is pretty bad. For starters there are designs for swimming fish-like submarines and it's hard to tell right now what parts of brains need to be replicated for intelligence, we just don't know how much you can distill out to get the true foundations of intelligence and how much is just extra fluff mother nature vomited out. But honestly no neuroscientist I've heard of thinks the way you do, that's an attitude peddled solely by computer nerds as opposed to the people who actually research how intelligence works. People are so impressed by our progress in algorithms they get caught up in the hype and greatly underestimate how much progress we haven't made yet. At the end of the day though we fundamentally can't know how much of our brains are evolutionary fluff and just how alien intelligence can be until we actually research our minds. There's a gap between algorithms and minds that we can cross much faster by researching our minds first as opposed to blindly trying different algorithms. We stick close to biology first then backtrack from there, that's how we do it fast.
https://www.reddit.comdonaldhobson/s/OgimEwugHm : Why do you think ASI is super hard to make? If ASI was totally trivial, we would have made it by now. If it's super hard, it's a long time away. There is some level of difficulty that makes it arrive in 2050. How do you know that ASI isn't at that level of difficulty? we display intelligence it's because those chemicals are doing computations. Evolution picked analogue over digital, but it's still computations. And I think a lot of the complications are random things that are getting in the way of intelligence. Feather mites living in bird wings are a random complication. That doesn't mean that flight is inherently complicated and needs feather mites. Those "computer nerds" are also researching how intelligence works, just from a different angle. You seem to think the biologists have some deep insight, and the computer scientists are just dumb. That's not how it has worked for any technology in the past. Planes didn't start by copying birds exactly. Well the first means of flight were balloons, which are even less birdlike. Evolution found human minds by trial and error. Which shows that it is findable by trial and error. Evolution was slow, but much of the selection pressure was on the rest of the body, not the brain. And when evolution has overheating problems, it has to trial and error it's way to better heat sinks. Humans can quickly engineer a better heat sink. And humans can at least extrapolate a line on a graph. (Ie as this number goes up, performance goes up. ) Evolution can't even do that. Why do you think trial and error will fail? And you do know there is at least some theory behind deep learning, it's not just trial and error, right?
Me: Except it will be once we get it up to our level. That's uncharted territory and we have literally nothing to work off of. We have zero clue how such a being would think, how to make the new emotions and sensations it would experience, and all those other philosophical differences. Sure we could add raw computational power to us and our AIs but that can really only get us so far, it's incredibly inefficient, dangerous, and lacks precision. It's the sledgehammer approach, ideally considering we're dealing with crafting living beings we want the scalpel approach. Maybe we could get an AGI of SOME kind by roughly 2050 but I don't think that would cause the avalanche of progress you think it would, and even then I'm leaning more towards 2080. Again general intelligence is kinda hard to describe and doesn't necessarily mean it's anything like us or particularly efficient or easy to upgrade. Maybe computer science and neuroscience will meet in the middle in the mid to late 21st century and that's how we get AGI, a close-ish replication of intelligence that we then make more complex and useful and in the process figure out how our brains work and unlock all the tech that comes with that. Still though that's a process of like a century. I'd still call that a singularity, just not what you're envisioning. difficultly is a pretty reasonable assumption for a technology like superintelligence, and it's not just an assumption, we barely understand animal intelligence. I'm willing to concede that maybe AGI could be done by 2050 (probably a few decades later at least in terms of it being widely avaliable, safe, and super useful), however a bunch of a AGI does not a superintelligence make. It definitely accelerates civilization by a lot and undoubtedly kicks off the singularity, but I just don't see your level of speed being very likely, nor desirable. I'm aware computer scientists have a lot of good insights on intelligence, however I'm also aware of the huge overestimation everyone has of them, like they're on the verge of the singularity while every other field is irrelevant. I've definitely sensed a lot of arrogance from computer science, like they have everything figured out and in a few decades science will be over. Imo, you just drank the silicon valley kool-aid a but too much. Tech billionaires benefit greatly from seeming way more advanced than they actually are. I don't think flight and birds is the right analogy for AGI, it's more like how we're trying to design nanobots, ie by essentially just copying cells, and woth nanotech the funny thing is even very different chemistries still look like biological cells. Again, I'm not saying we need to replicate brains exactly in fact human likeness is rarely ever optimal for technology, but I think the problem of intelligence is hard enough that without assistance from brain research it's nit going to get very far very fast, and even with help it's still going to take a long while to actually make artificial life. Ultimately I think there's a fundamental limit to how fast a singularity can actually happen, and I believe that will always be on the order of many decades or a century or two, due to a combination of difficulties setting up AGI, making it more alive than the initial models, improving its intelligence beyond human levels, and getting it to the point where it can truly advance faster without our help, not to mention any singularity that goes too fast risks making manmade horrors beyond comprehension and nobody legitimately wants that and pretty much everyone agrees caution is a virtue when it comes to AI, plus like I said research can only happen so fast and we don't know how difficult it will be for each level of the singularity to advance, it turn out that all intelligence finds great difficultly improving itself or maybe its a piece of cake (it's probably somewhere in the middle). Either way I think my compounding difficulties are really hard for you to just explain away and cram into your timeline. And at the end of the day despite you proposing a faster timeline I think I'm being the more optimistic one here since a slower timeline actually gives us some amount of time to figure things out and ensure that the future at the other end of the singularity is a pleasant one.
https://www.reddit.comdonaldhobson/s/OgimEwugHm : In nuclear physics terms, maybe AI's are like 90% of the way to critical mass. It's not IMPOSSIBLE to just stay at that level. But it's a cutting it close thing. Once you start getting beyond human level, you are in a region of strong positive feedback. And it's unlikely that a field with rapid tech progress suddenally screaches to a halt just before the strong feedback loops really kick in. Intelligence isn't magic. (And your using "emergent" as a synonym for magic) It's understandable. It's mathy. There are fundemental limits. Well it depends what you define as a "singularity". But you won't find any of your fundamental limits exceeding a microsecond for most sensible definitions. Setting up the AI is about 3 hours of installing extra tensorflow libraries. Making sure it can advance without our help is giving it terminal access and letting it figure out the rest. Improving beyond human is a case of doubling NEURON_COUNT and LAYER_COUNT. Making it "more alive" is not a thing.
Me : Except that's not really an ASI then, that's just a powerful algorithm. If you remove all the thoughts and complexity then you just get a tool that's about as close to the singularity as our current narrow AIs, heck at that point you're better off just making a narrow AI for everything. But you're not getting any special insight from that ASI, nor is it taking over the world. Also, this goes to show your complete disregard of neuroscience. Also, it took evolution billions of years to get to our level, so us taking another century or two instead of a few microseconds makes far more sense. it's not just math, and we have no idea what emergent property actually creates it, let alone how to make a computer do that. Neuroscientists don't even tend to think transistors are the proper substrate for intelligence and consciousness in the first place. I have a question for you, are you expecting the first superintelligence to be conscious or not? Because an unconscious AGI that's very good at it's job is what you seem to consider an ASI. However that is not an ASI at all, that would require actually increasing the complexity of the mind. Btw the only definition of "singularity" I find plausible is a century of rapid progress because of a bunch of intelligence augmentation both in ASIs and transhumans, not the classic skynet taking over in a microsecond BS.
https://www.reddit.comdonaldhobson/s/OgimEwugHm : ASI is a powerful algorithm. I expect that an ASI can exist with code not vastly more complicated than chatGPT. I'm not saying you can just scale chatGPT up. But I wouldn't be totally shocked if scaling chatGPT did lead to superintelligence. And some change on the magnitude of RNN's to transformers. Sure, that could do it. An AI that brute force simulates every atom in the universe is pretty comprehensible. (Impractical compute requirements) The equations of quantum mechanics aren't THAT hard. It's just a big PDE solver. But such an AI is in practice very powerful and dangerous. I don't think "transistors aren't the proper substrate for intelligence" is the consensus view of neurologists. It's also blatently incorrect. You are waving around "emergent properties" as if it's a magic, inherently incomprehensible thing. In reality, the combined behaviour of lots of simple parts is something that maths can and does deal with. There are theorems saying that as the size of neural nets goes to infinity, so too does the amount of data they can store. I'm not sure it matters from a practical standpoint. (It matters from a moral one. We want to be nice to conscious AI's. But what can a conscious AI do that an unconscious one can't.

2024.04.26 07:29 Training_Ad4515 Getting into Ashoka: application, AAT, interview, financial aid, etc.

EDIT: I did NOT get financial aid, so I will be unable to answer your questions about aid decisions, I'm so sorry. There's plenty of people on this sub reddit that have pretty detailed posts about the aid process though, so I would recommend just looking out for posts that mention words like aid and financial decisions.
I was accepted into ashoka for the batch of 2028, as a R1 applicant for political science. This subreddit was like a bible to me throughout the application process, so I thought I'd give back to future applicants or anyone interested. Hope it helps :)
Before anything else, I highly advise that you know why u want Ashoka. Beyond the name, what about the college appeals to you. Campus visits are great in this sense, but even if you can't visit, please do some research ( will also help you in ur interview) about the college, the professors, the people, etc. Beyond what you're already being told. If nothing stands out, don't apply. It's a fucking exhausting application and if you're not evern sure why you want it, I highly suggest you channel your energy elsewhere. Are you applying because of ur college counsello family or own motivation. Things like Ashoka's politics, which may not be a big deal at first, can really shape the way your experience goes. There's so many other colleges, just because it may be the the best college on some website, that doesn't mean it's the best college for you :) Moving on.
Application
Apply in R1 if you can. It's the least competitive, and the admissions team isn't tired of seeing applications. I don't know if I would've gotten in as a R3 or even R2 applicant. Ashoka's website says it doesn't matter, but it does. Every round gets more competitive and the applicant pool gets more and more intense. If you can't do R1, for whatever reason, make sure you strenghthen your app to compete against many higher than average applicants.
Letter of Rec: do not underestimate this one. Please. Imo it's what really strengthened my entire application. I had my political science teacher write my letter and made sure it wasn't overtly generic. Because I applied as a pol sci major, I think having this teacher in particular write my LOR demonstrated passion, interest and overall academic commitment to my chosen subject. I don't think it's critical to have ur major subject instructor write your letter though. Whoever u choose, make sure they know you. As a person, not just your classroom performance. The LOR testifies everything you've said in ur application so far and you need it to be someone who is sure of ur capabilities and capacity. Please make sure they can write well or edit ur own letter, DO NOT LET THEM SUBMIT WITHOUT SHOWING U FIRST. PLEASE.
Essays: this is the sexist part of the application, because it's your time to shine. Even if language is not ur strongest suit, they want to see how u think, behave and understand the world around you. Go wild. Be yourself, even if it doesn't sound smart or intellectual- they're looking for authenticity. I submitted a poem for one of my essays, because that is what felt the most like me. There's no blueprint to follow, and as vague as that is it's also fucking incredible because you can do anything u want, and show Ashoka whatever u want them to see. However. Read the prompts. Understand them. They're broad but highly specialized. Take time to understand what is being asked of you before you start writing. Get a second pair of eyes to look at what you've written before you submit. Even if you don't have a counsellor or an advisor, ask a friend or family member. Ask someone online. I know it's scary and probably very jarring to show them ur work, but I assure you that it's incredibly helpful. Sometimes you're too close to the work to look at it critically.
Books: optional but I highly recommend you answer this. It's fun and again adds depth to your application. Don't bullshit it, because they will see right through you. I know people who got it with diary of a wimpy kid and with war and peace. It's all subjective. Choose books that you genuinely liked and found stimulating, and be prepared to explain why. Books I said were : bell jar by Sylvia Plath, Giovanni's room by James baldwin, the Virgin suicides by Jeffrey Eugendies, heaven by Meiko Kawakami and kafka on shore by murakami. Very pretentious selection, but also very personally loved selection.
AAT
Honestly, imo Ashoka only does this to make sure you're not incredibly stupid. I know for a fact I messed up most of the math, but I think they saw I wasn't absolutely gone despite failing to do 5th grade math problems. It's not a complicated test, I was expecting a lot worse. If they like ur application and see that ur fine on the test, it's okay. You don't need to get every question right. However. That doesn't mean you should fucking bomb the test and take it easy. Do your best, I don't think you need to prepare for anything. Just don't worry about it too much. Imo it's the least important part of the application.
On the spot essay
I may be biased to this because I love writing, but the essay is genuinely not that difficult. They give u upto 2 prompts that you can choose from and they're always vastly opposite ( mine were about misunderstood historical figures and something about the advancement of tech- I wrote about Marie Aintonnette, not a good essay but got the point across) . There's no word limit, so again. They're trying to see how you react to given stiumulus, not testing your language skills. Articulate your thoughts about whatever you choose, and make sure your thinking is very evident. It's okay to make spelling mistakes. Please ffs don't take the essay lightly. Think. Understand. It's a very important piece of ur application that Ashoka will be seeing!!
Additionally, extra time is available for both the AAT and essay if u require it due to learning/ mental differences. I have ADHD and medication for depression ( among others lmao), and Ashoka was really cool about it. I gave them my psychiatric reports and got almost 50% extra time. If you can, take it. Even if you don't use the time, it's always better to be safe.
Interview
My favorite part of the whole process. I was interviewed by Mercia Prince, who heads admissions, which was mild to moderately terrifying. But she was chill as fuck. It was the nicest conversation and I could tell that she had really read my application in and out, because her questions were very directed at what I had said. In my experience, she asked less questions about politics than about me, with questions ranging form my medications to my family to my favorite places to live in. She was particularly interested in me being homeschooled. Overall, I'd say that the main thing for the interview is to be confident. If you're at the interview, it means they liked your application and want to know more about you and see the face behind the numbers. Know who you are and show them that. If you don't know the answer to a question, say "I don't know". Ask for time to think if you need it. Be open, be honest. Try to stay updated with current affairs, but it's okay if you're not too involved. If they ask a question about something u don't know, don't panic. It's a conversation, not a test. There are no certain questions they ask, but be prepared to answer things like why Ashoka, questions about the foundations courses, why you want to major in your chosen subject, and what makes you special from everyone else applying. Pretty standard college interview questions, but make sure you don't give standard answers. You are in charge of the conversation. What I mean when I say this is the idea that u can influence the interviewers perception of you. At some point she asked about the nature where I live ( it's very green), and I casually mentioned how important greenery is to me- something I saw on Ashoka's campus when I visited. It's little things like that. Use the fact that you're getting to talk to the uni to ur advantage. Also please READ YOUR APPLICATION before the interview. Know it in and out. It's such a game changer and I don't see enough people talking about this. It's literally a fact file of everything they could possibly ask you. Especially if some time has passed, go back and read what you said. Stick to what you know was good enough in ur app to get you that interview. Show Ashoka why they need you and why you need Ashoka. At the end of the day, it's a business and you are a new prouduct in the market. Show them why you are indispensable for who you are.
Financial aid
I live in a middle class suburbs with 1 sibling and 2 parents. I attend boarding school on a very hefty (80% tution waiver) scholarship in a very well known IB school. My brother and I both have medical bills ( therapy) that insurance doesn't cover, among other expenses( time to do organ donation! ). My mother does freelance and my father is self employed, both struggled during the pandemic. Nothing much else to say, AU's financial aid program is pretty straightforward. It's not as robust as they make it seem online ( 60% students on financial aid) but it works.
Extras
I've seen a lot of people saying u shouldn't bullshit your application but my say on that is slightly different: bullshit if u must but please be smart about it. Don't lie about reading a book if u haven't or fake ur financials. If they ask you for ur passions and you make one up, be smart and be prepared to answer questions about it. It's what I said about the narrative. If it suits your profile, go ahead but know that if Ashoka sees through you, you will get fucked over.
I think that's about it. I can't really say definitively what Ashoka is looking for, because who the fuck knows, but this is my opinion and my general thought process about the whole thing. Keep in mind that Ashoka is a very elitist school and their politics are deeply questionable, which makes it a lot tougher to understand what they actually want. It's really fucking expensive also, which kind of signals the tax bracket they are aiming to accept. Ashoka seems really competitive and it is, but it's important to note that basically every Indian student with a working wifi connection is applying. It's no IIT, but it's up there. Do your best on your application and know that if it doesn't happen, ashoka maybe just isn't the right place for you and that's okay.
Another thing I will say is don't go down quora/ internet rabbit holes. All these college sites that advertise Ashoka placements, acceptance rates, ranks, etc. - they're not going to get you anywhere, and honestly nobody knows the truth except ashoka themselves. I truly believe that the only sites you should really be looking at are Reddit and LinkedIn- they're very valuable if u know how to filter out the unnecessary noise.
Please feel free to dm me if you need specifics. I am not currently a student at Ashoka, so know that I won't be able to answer questions about uni life but I can help with application specific questions. Hope this helps. Sorry for going on and on :))

2024.04.24 00:06 Ok-Grocery-5747 Poem

Here is the poem I posted a snippet of earlier. I wrote this poem 9 months into reconciliation. I don't usually write poetry. Bolded lines for separation as Reddit doesn't like paragraphs/stanzas.
Here is the undistorted truth:
What you thought you had
Was only possible in the shadow of me
The constant hum of my presence
Running through every moment
That you thought belonged to you alone
I was there all the time.
Here is your ill-fated reality:
When you made your plans
You didn’t factor me into the equation
Faulty math to disregard a variable
So essential to his very being
Despite any conflicting persuasion
Uttered in fury or drunken abandon.
Here is how your disordered fairy tale ended:
I laid the truth bare and made him choose
He chose the one he couldn’t live without
All the desire that was hidden
Buried under the rubble of a few bad years
Shattered his illusion of loving anyone else.
Here is how we rose from the depths of ruin:
We turned towards each other
We turned away from anger and betrayal
Rekindled desire transformed our hearts
Love comes rushing back when you least expect it
Forgiveness and fearless honesty
Leading us to a brand-new life together.
Here, then, is the end of your delusion:
He would take it all back if he could
Every single stolen moment you shared
His regret burns as intensely as his passion for me
There is no space that you occupy in his heart and soul
There is nothing you can do to come between us again
Your malicious pursuit has no meaning or effect
What was built on lies has crumbled beneath the truth.
