2024.06.07 21:15 Mi_ii What does talking with your ex after the breakup mean?

Hi! Me and my ex-bf broke up a month ago. We first agreed we'd give news to each other from time to time but not checking in regularly so we can still detach from the situation. I broke no contact, just to say some things about the breakup and relationship, and usually we would talk the rest of the day and end it there. He broke it too after 3 weeks, saying he missed me but he was okay with the situation (the breakup was his choice). I then said I'd stop texting him and block him because I needed to move on. I lasted one week 💀 I have big family problems happening rn, and on Monday I was so down I gave in and reached out to him. He comforted me, and we've been talking everyday ever since. Not about the breakup this time, or what happened during the relationship. Just about what we're doing with our days. He sends me pictures too. Of himself, of the landscapes he's seeing. Today he told me he promised he would always be there for me even after the breakup, and it seems he intends to keep that promise. He said he still cares for me. That we could keep chatting like this if I wanted to. But we didn't need to talk about what it meant. To him it just feels natural to talk with me, and he wants to be there for me as well. I'm a bit confused. I like talking with him and honestly it has helped me in dealing with what's happening in my family. We both said if the time is right a few years down the line, maybe we could try again. I don't feel like we should get back together yet as it is too soon and we both need to heal. I don't think he wants to get back together yet either, not now. But we can't seem to let the other go. Also what does it mean that we can't talk about what's happening rn? Like is this some sort of situationship? Or are we just friends? Has this ever happened to anyone here and what happened next??

2024.06.07 21:15 rox_et_al Proximity of postdoc topic to PhD research in terms of topic/approach?

I'm nearing the end of my PhD and starting to apply to postdocs. Choosing what to apply to versus what is likely a waste of time is a bit challenging, so I'm curious how closely the advertised postdoc work should match my PhD work so that I am a competitive applicant?
My PhD research is in coastal geomorphology (i.e. repeatedly mapping coastal landscapes > analyzing the data empirically and integrating with models > to study landscape evolution). I see many postdoc opportunities that are essentially this topic and suggest a very similar approach, but applied to non-coastal environments such as rivers and hill-slopes. So, basically same approach, but different setting. I think I'm well-qualified for these positions, though I've almost exclusively conducted research in coastal settings. What do you think?
Then, of course there's the converse, similar setting, but different approach or type of question. This one is maybe harder to define, but something like a similar coastal setting, but rather than approaching a geomorphic question from repeat mapping I'd use stratigraphy instead. Or maybe I'm using similar repeat mapping techniques to answer a more ecological question versus geomorphic. I think this one is a bit harder to answer concretely, though I still think I'm decently qualified for many of these positions. What do you think?

2024.06.07 21:05 jbwhite9 Best rappers to never collaborate on a song together ?

I’ll start off by listing these collabs we never got. 1. Nas and Biggie (2 of the best spitters from nyc , big passed before we could ever get a collab)
2.Andre 3000 and lauryn hill (no explanation needed , had this happened in 1998-2001 it wouldn’t been an iconic song, Andre was experimenting with different sounds and genres during this period and their styles would’ve meshed well.)
3 .Kendrick and Nas (I consider Kendrick the west coast nas with more marketability, 2 great story tellers that were never considered gangsta, but you could picture yourself living in Compton or NY by the stories they told.)
  1. Joey badass and MF DOOM (DOOM didn’t do many features, but this one made too much sense not to have happened)
  2. Wayne and 50 cent (their peak and popularity happend at different times in the same decade oddly, 50 didn’t work with anyone outside of g unit or snoop and by the time Wayne was at his peak , 50 moved away from music)

2024.06.07 21:05 Mi_ii Talking after a breakup

2024.06.07 21:00 GentlemanlyAdvice The Completely True Story of How a Filthy Gweilo Married the Most Beautiful Girl in the World

I was a damaged person. But I was on the mend.
I had a pretty traumatic break up with my childhood best friend, turned girlfriend. I had known her since we were 8 years old. We had been boyfriend and girlfriend since we were 13 and had been so for 9 years until my junior year of college when she cheated on me in a very cruel way. It came to light that she had cheated on me many times before as well.
I loved her so god damn much! I thought we were one of those stories where two souls were knitted together from eternity to eternity, or some hallmark card bullshit like that.
I was emotionally shattered and it took me a while until one day about 2 years later, I woke up and thought about her, but then realized that I hadn't thought about her at all the previous day. It was glorious and I knew then that I was on the mend. After that, my healing process sort of exponentially snowballed and I was back in the saddle as far as relationships went. I started going on dates and meeting up with women.
I was a software engineer working for a large corporation. Because I was good at my job, and because I didn't have a family, I was given the opportunity to move to Singapore and lead a project there for what would be a couple of years but turned out to be 7 years.
The great thing about Singapore is that they speak the "King's English" when they're not speaking "Singlish" (a patois of mostly English with funky grammar, but with Malay, Chinese, and Hindi thrown in). So I didn't have to learn a whole new language to fit in. I just had to learn how to translate Singlish to English, which wasn't too hard after a couple of months of trying. I even learned the lingo and it would amuse my coworkers a whole lot when I spoke Singlish. They thought it was hilarious.
I was a good looking guy (still am!!) but I really let myself go in my depression. I was a tall, muscular 210 pounds when I broke up with my ex, but I had ballooned up to over 300 pounds. I started a workout regimen and lost it all but the workout regimen became sort of an obsession. It was the one thing that grounded me. After I went to Singapore, one of my business perks was a gym membership at "Fitness First", a local gym franchise. I was down to my previous weight, but I had to practically camp out at the gym because the best thing about Singapore is the FOOD. The food is incredible! However, you WILL pack on the weight if you don't get your ass to the gym.
The meet cute
I was working out one day much later than normal due to some overtime on my project and I saw a girl on a treadmill. The treadmill was the one I usually use because it was in the back and kind of out of the way. The girl was stunning! The thing that stuck out to me was that she was had her hair in a pony tail through a ball cap, which is a look I find very attractive. I was a little nervous because, even though I was fairly confident about the way I look, I was definitely batting out of my league with this girl.
I went to her and chatted her up after she got off of the treadmill. She didn't look me in the eye and didn't really engage. I figured that I had acted like what is now known as a "gym creep" and I figured it was a "swing and a miss!" I apologized and said I wouldn't bother her anymore. I stuck out my hand and said "I'm OP, by the way. What's your name?"
She hesitated and looked at me for a bit and said "Lilly" (not her real name).
I remember this exactly because she later said that it was what intrigued her about me. At the time, she was an actress/model who had done some print/public billboard type ads, product demo booths at expos, and even a bit part in a local tv (Mediacorp) series. She had started to attract public attention because of these (mainly the TV show and the ads that were hanging all around town at that time) not just from men but from women too and it was super uncomfortable for her.
The fact that I had no idea who she was relaxed her and made her think that I was attracted to her for her and not because her face was everywhere at the time. After she told me about it, I did notice her face everywhere. But photoshop was a thing even back then, so I didn't recognize her from her ads and I really don't look at ads, tuning them out. I also didn't watch her TV show because it was in Mandarin Chinese and I don't speak or understand any Chinese, and I wasn't in a position where I was required to attend or arrange trade shows.
In the years prior to meeting me, Lilly had undergone a lot of plastic surgery (breast, eyelid, facial contouring, nose job, lipo, etc). She said it got to where she didn't recognize herself in the mirror and it disturbed and depressed her. She hadn't particularly wanted the surgery but she got the procedures done at the behest of her family who wanted her to bring in more money and the people in charge of her career development (don't know the term). It was all very expensive and she felt like she owed her family and the talent people who managed her.
Later, I found out that she hated the public recognition. Not just from men, but mostly from women who were really catty about her plastic surgery. The people in charge of her were pushing her to start singing but she didn't have a good voice and would need a bunch of training for that. She was depressed due to not recognizing herself in the mirror any more and didn't want to follow the career track that she had been on. They were pushing her to do more figure/body modeling which was why she was in the gym. She was SUPER uncomfortable with that and constantly hungry and pissed off.
She was afraid that she would do some more modeling and then get married off by her parents to some rich mainland Chinese man that she would be ambivalent about (she preferred Caucasian men) and she'd be forced to be a traditional pampered Chinese wife living in Beijing.(Doesn't sound that bad to me. Some of those Chinese businessmen live crazy luxurious lifestyles.
Since I was working a lot of overtime, I kept going to the gym later at night and we saw each other and I would wave and smile and she would smile and wave back. OK I was kinda hoping to meet her regularly. I spotted her on a couple of exercises and we began to chat with each other a bit. A couple of times I had to steady her because she was fainting from being hungry and working out at the same time. I used that as an excuse to take her out to a hawker center, which like a mall food court but with delicious local food (not chain restaurants). We chatted and got along really well. It became a regular thing until I confessed I had a crush on her. We started dating after that until it got to a point where she practically moved into my place.
She, of course, had her share of guys interested in her. She was on livejournal at the time (remember livejournal??) and she was doing that and posting pictures of herself for her career mostly, but I'm sure she did enjoy the attention. She had one guy from Belgium who was really after her. He actually bought her 800 thread count sheets, which is an oddly practical but vaguely inappropriate gift. He actually visited Singapore on business (he was a tech sales guy) and wanted to meet up with her in a public place, a hawker center. I still had trust issues from my previous "love of my life" betraying me. To this day, I cringe at my behavior at the time, but I laid down a clear boundary. She could absolutely go see and hang out with this guy if she wanted to, but if she did, she'd be doing it as a single available girl and we would be through. She said she saw my face "turn to stone" and it was clear that she would lose me if she went to meet up with that guy. That honestly gave her pause about our relationship and she really considered ending it at the time. I didn't know that until much later, though. Certainly, I'm glad that she didn't. She didn't go meet up with the guy. To this day, we call the incident "The Belgian Waffle". OK so I call it that, she thinks it's stupid.
Meeting her family
Eventually, Lilly asked if I could have dinner with her parents, saying that they wanted to meet me. I bought some gifts, basically Japanese cookies in really nice packaging, and then we met. I did the traditional thing and formally introduced myself and asked them about their family and history.
At the time, Lilly got some criticism from her extended family because I am a white guy. There was a certain stigma attached to local girls who liked white guys. They called those girls "SPGs" which stands for "Sarong Party Girls", a derogatory name for the prostitutes who would entertain British expats at after hours parties "back in the day".
Over the next few months, I won over her family mainly by eating their food and being accepting of their culture. I grew up in Texas, so pickled jalapenos were common in my house...like salt and pepper, we put them on everything. Later on, I was the kind of guy who put tabasco or sriracha on everything. So eating their spicy food was no problem for me. I remember us both going shopping at an open air market and seeing an older woman cutting up cili padi. I asked if I could try some. She looked at my pale face and then at Lilly and she said I could. I bit into one and chewed it up as the woman looked at me with an amused look on her face. She was waiting for me to jump up and down with fire shooting out of my mouth, I guess. I disappointed her, but she and Lilly were impressed. She later told her mother and she was impressed too. She wanted me to eat one for her as well. Oh well, trained monkey time I guess.
The real test came when I tried Durian for the first time. This is the same food that "defeated" Andrew Zimmern, the "Bizarre Foods" guy. I actually liked it. I had a D24 durian, which admittedly is like the "beginner version" of durians. There are like 16 different types. When you get past the smell and actually taste it, it doesn't smell that bad any more. It's very sweet and creamy. It's like the taste overwrites your disgust of the smell. I think that's what really impressed them to an extreme degree. They started calling me an "egg", because I was "white on the outside but yellow on the inside."
I would visit her grandmother with her. In true Chinese fashion, Lilly and her brother Johnny were raised by their paternal grandparents while their parents worked full time jobs, so her grandmother was like her mom. She was in an elder care facility at this point, though. She didn't like living there, but it was all they could afford. We would visit her every week and she'd be very happy. She didn't speak any English at all so she and Lilly would just chat speaking Hokkien Chinese while her grandmother would pet my hairy forearms like I was a dog. She was absolutely smitten with my hairy forearms.
Meeting my family
After a little over a year, I took her back to Texas to meet my family. It was quite the culture shock. Lilly was amazed by red barns and hay bales, black and white Holstein cows, things she saw in movies about the USA. She particularly was impressed by the cluster mailboxes lined up on country roads ("So cute, leh!") We actually had to stop the car and take pictures of her standing next to them, smiling goofily for the photo. I made sure to take her to the Texas hill country during spring, when the hills are covered with soft green grass and festooned with bluebonnets, sunflowers, indian paintbrushes, black eyed susans, daisies, etc. I had to practically hold her down to keep her from picking them. It's not illegal or anything, it's just frowned upon and tradition to leave them alone. OK, I let her pick some. Give me a break, I was in love with the girl.
Driving was also something that kind of boggled her mind. Texas is huge, and traveling from my parents' place to visit my brothers and their families was a seemingly endless trek. Driving from Houston to Austin, to Corpus Christi was crazy long, even with the stops to visit my relatives.
Lilly was practically agoraphobic at the big sky in Texas. She was used to being in a forest of tall concrete and steel buildings, with only strips of blue sky available at the top. In Texas that sky went from horizon to horizon. She was also amazed at the uncountable numbers of stars at night away from the city lights. She later told me it was like visiting Narnia or something.
In Texas, she got her share of looks from guys, especially in the bigger cities. I wasn't jealous. I've never been a jealous guy, although my experience with my ex "love of my life" really put my radar up, I still was proud that other guys were attracted to her. My attitude was "go ahead and eat your hearts out, she's with me!"
When she met my oldest brother, it was like a cultural thing with her, so she was very deferential and respectful. I knew that my oldest brother was attracted to her because he was stumbling and stuttering when he was speaking to her, looking at her but kind of avoiding looking at her. I wasn't too concerned because he was a married guy with 2 sons and not a scumbag, but it was still pretty amusing to see "Mr. Smooth-don't-let-em-know-you-want-em-kid" at a loss for words.
My parents met Lilly finally (she was super nervous but she did really well) and later my mom brought me aside and asked me if she should re-set her mother's diamond engagement ring. I thought about it a bit, and then told her "yes". My mom's eyes started sparkling with images of unborn grandchildren and she smiled bigger than I had ever seen her smile (kind of unsettling actually). My dad later brought me aside and basically told me I couldn't do any better and I would be a "god damn fool" if I let her get away from me. I agreed. My dad then told me something that remains with me to this day: "She will make your life sparkle, son." (she has).
Before our time in the US was up my mom gave me the ring and I asked Lilly to be my wife in a field of wildflowers, which had become her favorite place to be in Texas. She said yes. Looking back, that was one of the happiest days of my life. It was up there with losing my virginity to "the love of my life" (who turned out to be a duplicitous crazy person but at the time it was really special), my wedding day to Lilly, and the births of our children.
The Engagement
When we got back to Singapore we had to pretend we weren't engaged because I had to ask her parents for their daughter's hand in marriage. I spoke with them and explained how my prospects in my career were good. I told them that I loved their daughter and that my family also loved their daughter. We had to schedule a phone call between my parents and her parents.
I had clued my parents in as far as the traditions go. In Chinese culture, the groom pays for the wedding rather than the bride. The groom also has to give the bride's parents certain auspicious gifts. My parents luckily had done a tour of China a few years before and knew all of this beforehand, having befriended their local tour guide who was saving up money for his own wedding at the time. On the call, they agreed upon a pinjin, which is basically "betrothal money". We started to plan the Guo Da Li ceremony which would take place in 3 months time, and 3 months before the wedding.
Unfortunately life threw us a curve ball and Lilly's grandmother died. It was bittersweet because, while Lilly missed her, her grandmother had become very old and infirm to the point where her quality of life was pretty low. All wedding stuff was put on hiatus until the funeral was over plus 100 days for mourning.
After that, we were able to do the Guo Da Li ceremony. I gave my future in laws a red packet of money plus special cakes and 12 mandarin oranges and gold jewelry. It all went very well.
Wedding planning started in earnest. I got some money from my dad (who insisted) but the lion's share was out of my pocket. During this process I was able to meet some incredible people. The stand outs were Richard and Jimmy. Rich and Jimmy were tailors and dressmakers. They were a couple and they gave my fiancée a really good deal on a wedding dress and cocktail dress if she agreed to do some print modeling for their business. They also made me a tuxedo and a suit. I offered to model for them as well and we all had a good laugh at that prospect (OK they were doing most of the laughing - ego still hurts from that one, guys).
The venue we were using was Chijmes. It's the same one used in the move "Crazy Rich Asians". It was back when they had first started offering it up as a venue so it wasn't crazy expensive at the time. Plus, it was a smaller venue for weddings. Usually weddings are held in large hotel ballrooms and are huge affairs (this is what I was told). The families both invite everyone they've ever met to come: Neighbors, business contacts, everyone. They all bring red packets filled with cash. We opted for the "small" wedding.
The Bachelor Party
We had planned bachelobachelorette parties on the same night (separate venues). Lilly's MOH threw hers while Rich and Jimmy threw mine. My best man was my dad (because he's the best man that I know) and so cigars and brandy would have been disappointing to my work friends and my future brother in law and cousins. I don't think anyone was prepared for what happened.
We had the party at the sushi restaurant of a friend of Rich and Jimmy's. It was after hours. We had some incredible sashimi and rolls. I even tried fish sperm. Didn't like it. I asked Jimmy are you sure it's FISH, sperm?? He said of course he'd never do that to me. To be fair, it did taste and smell very fishy. I don't know how human sperm tastes like (or maybe I do now, I don't know).
After the sushi was done, it was time for the entertainment, and oh boy. Rich and Jimmy hired a trans entertainer who sang show tunes. The thing is, she had an incredible voice. She was obviously biologically male, but she really carried herself with a lot more femininity than I've seen from biological women. She sang and told jokes and roasted me pretty thoroughly. My dad was there and he thought it was funny as hell. My friends from work, especially the Aussies and Brits, thought it was great, my future BIL and most of my future cousins did too. Other cousins politely excused themselves and left. I think the free flowing booze and beer kept most people there, though.
After her thoroughly entertaining performance, it was time for the dancers. This is kind of where it went off the rails. Rich and Jimmy hired exotic dancers...but they were all male or trans. Now, to be fair, it wasn't like they didn't tell me about it beforehand. They did. Personally, I thought it would be hilarious to announce that the strippers were here and then have male dancers come out. I have a twisted sense of humor, I suppose. I certainly wasn't going to cheat on the most beautiful woman in the world mere weeks before our wedding, so prostitutes and female dancers were completely out of the question for me. They jokingly suggested male dancers it and we laughed. I thought about it a bit and I guess I'm "take-the-joke-too-far" guy so I encouraged it. Lilly knew about it and thought it was funny as well and wanted me to video tape it while it happened. ("Yeah right you just want to ogle the dancers" "Of course, lah!")
What I wasn't prepared for was the PLATOON of banana hammocks that marched out into the restaurant. Smooth greased up Asian chests everywhere! My dad was of course shocked at first and then looked at me and we started laughing and the ridiculousness of it. My dad stood up and clapped his hand on my shoulder and put a mock serious look on his face. The people immediately around me witnessed my dad telling me that he loved me and accepted my life style choice and that nothing I could say or do would ever change the fact that he and mom loved me and accepted me. Thanks, dad. I was laughing during the whole thing and my future BIL and work buddies who were around me were laughing as well. My dad excused himself and said he had to go find my mom and tell her the "bad news about her future grandchildren" and left ("Can adopt, lah! Can surrogate, meh!" Thanks for the support, guys). My future BIL laughed and said that since all of the available male dancers were at my party, there were none available to attend his sister's party, so she was "safe".
Among the highlights of the evening is that I discovered that a few of my co-workers and future cousins were in fact gay. I was told to stay out of the ladies' room no matter what. I wasn't planning on going in but thanks for the warning. I was proud that we all only vomited in the trash cans and not on the floor (what a waste of some damn good sushi....and fish sperm). Rich and Jimmy stayed next to each other all night. I even saw them holding hands and looking at each other lovingly. To my shame, I was under the common misconception that all gay men were very promiscuous and I kind of expected them to pair off with the dancers. What I saw that night was a very loving monogamous relationship.
The Wedding Day
The day of the wedding came a few days later and I had the good fortune of being the first one in my family to experience the fun and interesting experience of a groom going through a Chinese-style wedding. I say "Chinese-style" because while we did do a lot of the traditions from a Chinese wedding, we did say vows to God before a Christian minister. This was something she insisted on as her family had converted from Taoism to Christianity (but still kept the Taoist traditions and festivals).
First up was the gatecrash. I went over to the her family's apartment and the MOH and bridesmaids stood at the door refusing to let me in unless I gave them $9999.00. Nine is a significant symbol to them. It means "longevity" I think. So the whole idea is for me to haggle the price down by doing challenges and games. I had to do a handstand and walk with my hands. I had to answer trivia questions ("What is her nickname for you?" "Cranky old man" "What is your nickname for her?" "Baby"). BIL and I had to do "the worm". I haggled them down to $99 which I paid to them in a red packet. My BIL and wife chided me for not going lower but my dad was there and was in his 70s and couldn't do any feats of strength.
After I "secured" my bride, we did the traditional tea ceremony with her parents and my parents. Lilly was dressed in a traditional red silk qipao, tailor made by Rich and Jimmy. I gotta tell you people, the qipao really does it for me! Not gonna lie, it was like cupid gut punched me when I saw her dressed in it . My parents were pretty stoic throughout but my mom sympathy cried with Lilly's parents when she tearfully did the tea ceremony with her mother and father. We received red packets from each set of parents. I was told the red packet her parents gave us had most of the bride price we paid in it. Her mom gave her her grandmother's jeweled antique watch and my mom gave her a sapphire ring (sapphire is my birth stone). As we left her home to go to Chijmes, I told her "we're keeping that dress, understand me??" She laughed.
We got to Chijmes, did the photos and she walked down the aisle in a beautiful white dress with a small train behind it with sequins on it. My dad gave me the ring. He was my best man. He was my best man because he's the best man I know. After the wedding, she changed into a champagne colored strapless cocktail dress another Rich and Jimmy original. THREE wardrobe changes, people! THREE! All with different hair and make up and she did it super quick. I don't know what wizardry was invoked but we may be indebted to the hoary netherworld.
We honeymooned at the Fullerton Hotel. The old British colonial Post Office was converted to a luxury hotel in 2001. We stayed there for 3 days ordering overpriced room service ("Go to hawker center, lah! Much cheaper better food, meh!).
Emigration and Immigration
So a little bit before this time, a little event happened in New York. You might have heard about it. Anyway because some sexually repressed incels decided to murder thousands of people, USA's immigration was all jacked up. The INS went bye-bye. Then we had the BCIS for a brief moment, followed by the USCIS. I saw that my project was ending and my company helped me with her immigration. It was a pain, though. It seems like we had new forms to fill out every week while the old ones became obsolete. That's how I remember it, anyway. It was a pretty frustrating time and I almost had to leave her behind (it wouldn't have been permanent but it would be a long time). Luckily we were able to make it time.
For explanation purposes, we didn't get LEGALLY married in Singapore. We had the religious ceremony but no "government contracts" were involved. This is because, at that time at least, it was easier to bring over a fiancée than a wife, for some reason. So Lilly was a "90 Day Fiancée"!! We got married at the county courthouse when we finally were able to go to my new project. We didn't wait 90 days. We did in three (jet lag).
Unfortunately for her, we moved from Singapore, a 24 hour international class city, to a sleepy seaside town in the USA near a military base. Lots of fun was had with that. A total fish out of water story for another time (What is this "coin laundry"? Do you Americans have a place to wash your coins?).
My BIL got married to a beautiful girl and moved to Australia and opened a Bait and Tackle store in Surfer's Paradise on the east coast of Australia. He has 2 daughters. In 2012 he was caught cheating on his wife and lost everything. She moved back to Singapore with his kids, and he kind of struggled for a while. He got another bait and tackle store eventually and tries to see his daughters whenever he can. They don't have a good relationship.
Rich and Jimmy celebrated the decriminalization of homosexuality in Singapore in 2022, but they still can't get married. We still talk from time to time. Writing this, I find myself missing them. I had some really fun times because of them. I've never had better conversations in Singapore than with them while at Lilly's dress fittings (and my suit fittings).
We have been married for 21 years. She has never given up being a Singaporean citizen. She keeps her passport current. She's a "permanent resident" here in the USA. We have three kids, two boys and a girl. We are still married. She still wears her hair in a pony tail with a ball cap when she works out. She still wears that qipao on special occasions, which I try to achieve as often as possible. She's still my Baby and I'm still her Cranky Old Man.
Thanks for reading.

2024.06.07 20:58 Inner-Lab-123 The Piedmont

There is a strange old energy throughout the Georgia Piedmont in the foothills of the Appalachians.
The geography of the area—that which has not yet been consumed by Atlanta’s limitless growth—can be characterized by dense forests, rolling hills, and shallow red-clay valleys, punctuated by small grassy meadows. Silty rivers and small streams crisscross the landscape, often filling up the valleys to form lakes and marshes.
You are never alone in these forests, which are densely populated with wildlife of all strata. The region also hosts a large human presence, with booming sunbelt suburbs sprawling endlessly into the ancient hills.
As there are so many people in a relatively small region, it can feel difficult to escape the hustle and bustle of it all. Well-known trails close to population centers are often crowded, especially on fall weekends when the plentiful trees bloom with autumn color. I’ve been around long enough to know what hikes to avoid at certain times of year, as solitude is one of the most enticing benefits of wilderness to me. Plenty of state and natural forests, as well as expansive county nature preserves, go relatively unnoticed if they’re not among the top search results on AllTrails.
My Labrador puppy loves to accompany me on any hike. After work one day, I loaded him into the cab of my tired old pickup and drove us out to a close-by nature preserve that we frequent. The small gravel parking lot was totally empty when we arrived. The trail that we took led straight from the parking lot and was one of the most popular.
It was midsummer and I knew that there would be at least 90 minutes before sunset, but under the tree cover the landscape was already beginning to darken. As we got on our way, the roar of cicadas immediately drowned out the soft percussion of our footsteps. After crossing a whitewater creek and proceeding through a thicket of tall pines for not more than two miles, the view suddenly opens up to an expansive untamed meadow. Markings on trees along the right hand side clearly indicate where the trail resumes on the opposite corner, several hundred yards away. The majority of the meadow slopes down gradually to the left, dotted with occasional dogwoods and is sliced off sharply by another wall of old-growth pines before the bottom of the hill. Although I was familiar with the trail, I suddenly found us cutting swiftly leftward through the tall grass and down the hill toward the grove at the bottom of the meadow. Both my pup and I were drawn with urgency to this off-trail area of the preserve, and soon enough we were at the trees and taking our first steps into the dim woods.
Through the branches ahead I could see a crumbling red brick chimney, standing alone in the brush. It did not appear to be far away, but as we continued to advance toward it for several minutes, it seemed that we weren’t getting any closer.
Suddenly, a large black snake stopped us in our tracks, positioning itself as if to block us, and staring with a raised head. This is highly unusual behavior for black snakes, which are normally furtive and keep away from people. This slight shock snapped me out of my almost trancelike state, and suddenly everything felt very wrong. I took it as a sign that we were not welcome in that part of the forest and no longer wanted to investigate the chimney.
It took much longer than I expected to get back into the meadow. At this point I was drenched in sweat and my pup was panting hard, whereas not long ago we were enjoying the relatively cool summer evening. The meadow too was now dark, and when I checked my watch, I saw that we had been off trail for nearly an hour. Everything was silent—no more cicada chirping.
I’ve had similar encounters throughout the region, where the laws of space and time seem to be somehow suspended in certain areas of the backwoods. I’ve considered looking for the chimney again when I’m sure to have more daylight, but then I think about the snake’s warning and the feeling of existential dread that I felt that evening. Perhaps some things are not meant to be investigated.

2024.06.07 20:06 Spiritual_Asparagus2 I’m exhausted by my kids’ dangerous choices

Just a long rant
I have a 7 year old and 12 year old. Both make DAILY choices that stress me out and usually cause some form of harm to themselves.
Specifically today there is a slide on a play ground that is 15 feet tall at the landing platform but is well guarded by rails on each side. For the past 3 days my son (12) had argued with me about filming himself hanging from the outside of the rail to send his friend. Obviously I said “ummm no” we are in a mountain town with the ER 40 minutes away. He is 100% not an obstanant child, very kind and usually listens to my “no.” For three days he hasn’t tried to climb it but both have used the slide appropriately. I went to the restroom and came back ( he was suppose to be sitting with his sister at the picnic table next to the restroom) and both of them were hanging from the outside rail 40 ft away. If they fell, at minimum a few bones would be broken. He is crying right now because he realized how hurt his sister would have been if she had fallen.
Just to list a few more from this week:
-My 7 year old ran up to a raging river (stopping 3 feet away) and gave us attitude when we tried to explain it could sweep her away and we wouldn’t be able to get to her
-My 12 year old decided to run up a trail and almost fell off a cliff
-We took pictures at an over look with a 200ft drop on the other side (the wall was 4 ft high). When I asked my 12 year old to stand next to the wall while I took his picture he jumped over the other side of the rail. My husband almost had a heart attack.
-The 7year old has scars on her tongue from biting through it after jumping off various things, she also has a broken clavicle from jumping off a bed..
-12 year old was cutting up fruit and turned around super fast and almost stabbed the 7 year old. We’ve gone over kitchen safety ad nauseam and he’s now only allowed to use butter knives but he also loves cooking.
Both get serious head injuries from slipping , falling, and running into corners from literally running around the house.
We now have a running record with the pediatric ERs and primary car doctors detailing each of their injuries in the event CPS ever gets called on us. These behaviors are daily, usually a few times a day and all different incidences and usually separate from each other. Besides the slide today they usually are independently making dangerous choices separate from each other. They do NOT watch super hero movie or shows / they aren’t exposed to anything that would foster the behavior.
However the 7 year old has spent the last 5 days swimming at the pool she is on her best safety behavior while we have stayed out on the sides reading. So there is an ability to follow community rules / norms.

2024.06.07 20:02 Mammoth_Confection91 29[M4F] USA/California/Online Hey I'm looking to chat and see if connect!

So as the title states I'm 29 years old and residing in California at the moment sort of middle of nowhere California. I work from home a simple 9-5 that isn't thankfully too demanding so I'm able to spend lots of time during work chatting! As from physical attributes I'm about 5'10 and currently on a weight loss journey to be the healthiest I've ever been. I've already lost 20 pounds and hopefully more to melt away! I also have brown eyes and black hair tan skin. I've been told my voice is soothing and calming but you can be the judge of that yourself.
So a bit about me I would say I'm pretty much into the typical reddit hobbies. I enjoy playing video games, reading books/manga, movies and other nerdy things. I don't go into immense details because I'd like to be able to enjoy conversation without completely word vomiting here.
As for games I've currently been playing quite a bit of League(it's all my friends play please help) so if you'd like to play that let me know! I also really enjoy FFXIV and I'm excited for the new expansion but sadly I've been playing essentially alone for years now. I play on NA servers for both of these games. I also habe tons of steam games like stardew and Risk of Rain I'm also open to others if you'd like to play games together!
I am also a huge magic the gathering nerd and have been playing a few years and enjoy the game immensely. Magic isn't the only tabletop game I enjoy as I love tons of tabletop games like pandemic, betrayal on house hill, and dead of winter. Playing DnD is also tons of fun but it's been a while since I've played and would love to again.
For any form of cinema I absolutely love horror especially the campy cheesy horror movies the b productions that are so awful they are good. So if you love horror please let's chat nobody I know enjoys horror and I could yap about stupid terrible movies endlessly if you let me. Horror also goes into my books that I enjoy reading but I also enjoy sci-fi and high fantasy for books as well.
Along with horor cinema I also enjoy horror anime which there isn't a lot but I do enjoy it. There's plenty of anime I enjoy and I've been rewatching yu yu hakuhso as it's one of my all time favorites. I am watching a few currently airing anime such as Kaiju No8, Spice and Wolf, Go Go Loser Ranger, and Mysterious Dissappearnces.
So if any of this catches your attention send me a message or chat. If things go well we can move platforms to continue chatting. I can also spam you with pictures of my pets too if you'd like!

2024.06.07 20:01 VicePresidentofChaps Current War Status Chaplands

Current War Status Chaplands
Yellow territory is Chapland’s territory and Axeland’s is red. Blue is disputed territory. The flags you see in the picture are each side’s defense positions.
Now that I have explained the photo, I can give you information on what’s going on.
Right now we (The Chaplands) have been successful in pushing Axeland out of the demolition site. With the help of irritating smoke bombs we are able to make great progress on advancing our forces and seizing their supplies. Unfortunately, Axeland has one valuable position, and that is what we call manatee mountain. They have a well equipped and well guarded position on top of the hill that has been slowing our advance. As you can see, we moved roughly 5 people on a road side to cut off movement between the Mountain and Demolition site. Our plan is to wait until we seize all of the demolition site and then go on to take the mountain.
Thanks for reading, advice is highly appreciated.
Long live The Chaplands

2024.06.07 19:59 Realistic_Mistake795 Magnolia tree flare concerns

So I bought my house last year (which i am in the process of painting lol), and it has this cute little magnolia tree in front.
The distance is deceiving a bit, as there is a slight hill right before the house that we are going to level out soon, tree is about 10-15 feet from the house.
I've been lurking here a bit and saw a lot of posts & comments about the critical root zone needing to be clear of rocks, so yesterday i went out with a hoe and gently pulled all of the lava rock & edging rock away from her. Under the landscaping fabric (which was likely only added by previous sellers) was this insane tree flare.
I spent probably 4 hours last night trying to find good information about magnolia tree flares & how they should be sitting, but none of them look anything like mine so I'm struggling to understand my next steps here.
Is the soil line in a good spot around the trunk sides? (Pic 3-5) It is definitely doable to pull a bit more soil away or even add more, I just truly cannot determine what I'm looking at haha.
The side where you can see into the root flare (pic 2), I can't even begin to process. Should I cover any of this? Is it okay? Is it....normal?
Any advice would be great, I love this tree and I want her to continue to be happy!!

And then, there are the schools, which are so highly rated they might as well come with a money-back guarantee.
Allen also boasts a plethora of recreational activities. Fancy a stroll in one of the many parks? Or perhaps a shopping spree at the Allen Premium Outlets, where you can spend your savings on discounted designer goods? The options are endless, much like the opportunities for spending money.

2024.06.07 19:06 JulieG350Jgs Protect your energy, reclaim your Soul, and heal Ancestral Wounds by healing Yourself.

Protecting your energy is protecting your soul from negative, toxic, Soul Destructive people: past, present and future, living AND deceased: Generational Curses/Familial Sins = Karma
To save and restore oneself, energetic cords must be broken and dissolved. Changes must be made both mentally, spiritually, and psychologically. One must unlearn in order to Relearn. The programmed worldy ego will always keep you trapped until you start learning how to deprogram and reprogram it.
Everything stored in your ego was ingrained, programmed, Indoctrinated into you by OTHERS who didn't really have your best interest at heart. Not everyone that's been placed in your life was meant for YOUR good, but as lessons learned through trials, testing, tribulations to create growth and knowledge NOT to regress, suppress, nor stuck in wounded self-victimization.
Some people find offense in being told the truth that we've ALL been Indoctrinated, brainwashed, by every institution we've been made a part of and pushed by our parents/family maybe unknowingly, but yet it still happened. So you don't like to acknowledge that then your only further harming yourself. Many families were not aware of what they were doing at the time because they were more fixated on following and obeying the "rules/rituals, fake manmade laws, and they only blindly and obediently "complied".
This isn't to blame, shame, nor vilify anyone as that's not the purpose of Truth. Truth is to point out errors and alert to changes that must be made to "right" a wrong. Truth isn't meant to be comfortable, especially to those who hold onto falsehoods and the illusions of delusions. The Truth is the only way forward.
Real genuine growth and wisdom can only be created through chaos, as chaos triggers growth, knowledge = wisdom. Through chaos comes beauty. Like Volcanic eruptions are very Destructive, yet they also create the most beautiful landscapes when the destruction ceases.
Maybe you might find it helpful to imagine yourself as your own little volcano. Occasional eruptions to shake you up are necessary to break you out of a self-destructive streak or for you to break free from Destructive relationships, to then create a beautiful landscape eventually. Volcanic eruptions are seen as the earth purging itself from an overloaded toxic build-up of poisonous sulphuric acid and molten lava, and oftentimes, the release brings calmness and tranquility afterwards.
Nobody and Nothing can do it for you. You must do it on your own.
Free Will Choice is the Universal Law, and whatever you choose will be honored.
Caveat: If you choose to do nothing and let things continue to be as you are programmed into accepting as "normal" and not needing changed, there will be no "rescue" as you made your choice. You have therefore chosen to remain conformed to this world, and therefore, you will be ruled by this world, corruption wars disharmony intolerance destruction and all, and you'll go down with the ship.
There NEVER has been a being that will "rescue" anyone. That's a Soul Trap intentionally set up to entice people into NEVER awakening to their TRUE Potential as the "savior" agenda was intentionally used to harvest souls for the power of darkness = the soulless corrupted otherworldly beings.
Those who choose to make the changes will also not be "rescued" as they've already rescued themselves by being conscious and choosing to elevate/evolve from a lower mindset to a higher mindset and state of being. You chose not to conform to this world. Therefore, you will gain absolute freedom and unification with ALL that "IS" and soar to vast new heights never before, though possible. Free from the confines and artificial manmade "laws/dictates/doctrines." You will be safe because this old world will no longer be able to control you nor hold you back = it can not touch you.
Only YOU can heal Generational Karma or not. Only YOU can heal yourself or not. Your choice and nobody else's. God can never do it for you as God NEVER breaks the Universal Law of Free Will. Your choice will be honored either way.
Therefore, YOU are in charge of your OWN destiny, and you are the captain of your own ship. It's up to you if you sail off into the horizon, or to capsize and sink like many generations before you.

3 Daily Habits that Often Drain 90 Percent of Our True Potential (Week After Week)
“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
  1. Treating every day as though it’s “just another day.”
Start by being honest about the distraction and busyness in your life…
How often do you engage in the exchange of valueless gossip? How often are you thinking about other things when someone is talking to you? Do you check social media apps on your phone when you’re working, or when you’re spending time with loved ones? Do you send text messages while driving?
  1. Waiting and hoping to “find” something to be passionate about.
If you want more passion in your life right now, act accordingly right now.
Put your whole heart and soul into something…
Not into tomorrow’s opportunities, but the opportunity right in front of you.
Not into tomorrow’s tasks, but today’s tasks.
Not into tomorrow’s run, but today’s run.
Not into tomorrow’s conversations, but today’s conversations.
  1. Being too close and controlling every single step of the way.
Acceptance is letting go and allowing certain things to be the way they truly are. It doesn’t mean you don’t care about improving the reality of your life; it’s just realizing that the only thing you really have control over is yourself and your thoughts about everything else
When you let everything and everyone breathe, you just let them be, exactly as they are. You don’t need to control them, worry about them, or change them. You just let them breathe, in peace, and you accept them as they are.

Gossip Isn’t Good for You
Loosely defined, gossip is talking about someone from your family, work, church, or community behind their back, and typically in a way, you would not want them to overhear. Gossip is toxic, low vibrational behavior that never leaves you feeling good, so why do it? It’s a classic human error. Wasting our precious energy, boosting the signal of things we find distasteful, increasing behaviors that make us feel hostile, tired, and sad.
Gossip often feels like the only recourse for those with no power, or insufficient power to enact change in a situation. You don’t like a situation, but instead of rising, you take the temporary false sense of empowerment from gossiping and sink deeper in. When you talk shit, you bring that same ugly, dense, destructive energy into your own life. You make a home for something rotten,
Gossiping seems to relieve bad feelings, but in reality, it intensifies them. Validation is one seemingly-pleasing outcome of gossip that often rots on the vine once you’re alone.
Words have power. Let me say that one more time. WORDS. HAVE. POWER. Don’t waste your power calling negative energy into your life. Next time you’re tempted to gossip, try something different

The psychology of gossip..and it’s not good
Gossip is entitlement Gossip shows low self-esteem Whenever you are tempted to share intimate or personal details about someone with others, weigh your intentions and ask yourself some hard questions -
1] How does passing this information help you or that other person? 2] Are you sharing this information out of malice or envy?
Is this really necessary? Is the information your sharing a life or death situation? If not it's of no real importance to anyone because it has no constructive service, only destructive

What to Know About People with Toxic Traits
What causes toxic behavior?

1. Nature

Research suggests that these negative traits are at least partially genetic, passed from parent to child. Other studiesTrusted Source have shown that personality traits overall are moderately heritable.
So, people with parents who have toxic traits may be more likely to have those characteristics, too

2. Nurture

One studyTrusted Source found that being overprotected, pampered, or praised excessively in childhood can be associated with more narcissistic personality traits and feelings of entitlement.
On the other hand, some people with toxic traits may behave poorly because of past trauma, a dysfunctional family life, or substance use. A person’s inability to process stress and grief can sometimes transform into toxicity towards others.

3. Mental health conditions

Not all people with these traits have mental health conditions, but for some, conditions like personality disorders, bipolar disorder, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be the underlying cause of their behavior.

4. Positive reinforcement

Research suggests that even though they’re not actually better at their jobs, employees with toxic traits might be more likely to receive higher salaries and be promoted into leadership positions.
This may be because they’re able to portray themselves as hard workers, manipulate and exploit others, or cheat their way into getting what they want.
A person with toxic traits may be:
judgmental needy mean dishonest denialist narcissistic controlling calculating verbally or physically abusive emotionally inconsistent
Examples of toxic behavior
Lying and dramatizing Belittling or criticizing Asking for pity or sympathy Failing to take responsibility Isolating you from other people Gaslighting and manipulation

You gotta cut Energetic Cords if you truly want real peace, freedom, and joy, and a holistic state of mind/body/soul. It doesn't mean you hate them. It only means you choose to respect and honor yourself for once. If you can't choose to honor and respect yourself first and foremost, nobody else NEVER will. You will always get back from others what you believe, feel, and treat yourself and how you ALLOW others,to treat you.

5 Ways to Protect Yourself from Energy Vampires
Recognize toxic people in your life and take your energy back.
The important thing to keep in mind about energies is that we always pay back whatever we take. It’s also true the other way around, we receive a “positive interest on our energy investment” when we uplift someone.
The moment you emotionally react to energy vampires, they begin stealing your energy.
You leak your energy when you have a negative emotional reaction to something.
How to protect yourself from energy vampires?
  1. Learn to say no
  2. Become aware of your energies
  3. Your energy stays with you.
  4. Love is the strongest energy
  5. Cord cutting

Energetic Cord Cutting
Cord cutting is a spiritual practice that involves severing emotional ties with people to release negative energy and move forward. It can be a way for empaths, who may be highly attuned to the emotions of others, to heal from past relationships and protect their own energy.
Here are some steps you can take to cut an energetic cord with someeone:
  1. Ground yourself: Use meditation or breathwork to calm yourself
  2. Visualize the cord: Picture a cord of light connecting you to the other person
  3. Express gratitude: Thank the other person for what you've learned from the relationship, even if it was difficult
  4. Cut the cord: Say something like "It's time to break our bonds" and visualize cutting the cord with scissors
  5. Cleanse your energy: Finish by cleansing your energy field
Cord cutting doesn't mean ending relationships or erasing memories, but rather releasing negative energy to allow for growth and emotional healing. You can also try cutting off contact with the other person, such as avoiding them in person, removing them from social media, or blocking their number

Cord Cutting Ritual: What It Is and How to Do It
As we move through our lives — growing, learning, evolving — we must necessarily let go of that which no longer serves us. When we let go, we create space. This space is that of potential, of possibility.
Key takeaways:
Cord cutting is a practice to sever unhelpful emotional ties.
It’s a tool for healing and moving forward from past relationships.
The ritual involves grounding, visualization, symbolic severing, and energy cleansing.
Success signs include relief, peace, and increased energy.
The focus is on changing your own energy, not the other person’s.

Why Cut Cords of Attachment to Crazy Moms?
Why Cut Cords of Attachment to Crazy Moms? With all you have done to deal with that crazy from your past, why would it still make a big difference to Cut that Cord of attachment?
Any major Cord of Attachment is worth cutting in a personal Session. Every minor cord of attachment is worth cutting, too. What else do you know about the importance of cutting cords if you’ve studied with me?
Each cord of attachment has a distinctive pattern of energy, what I call a “Dialog Box.” One of my 12 Steps to Cut Cords of Attachment® involves catching this information while it is fresh, writing it down, discussing it with the client.
Cords of Attachment to Mothers with Mental Health Problems
“Claudia”‘s mother had been diagnosed as schizophrenic, going in and out of hospitals often during Claudia’s childhood.
“Marissa”‘s mother died when she was two. Relatives had darkly hinted to Marissa that there was something troubling about that mother and, oboy, did that ever become clear.
Why Cut Cords of Attachment to Crazy Moms?
Cords of Attachment in the Womb
One of the problems of having a mother with mental illness is that the baby receives imprinting through the cord of attachment. For Marissa, these were the first three items in her Dialog Box
Rage at everyone and everything. (Absorbed in the womb, through the cord of attachment.)
Feeling threatened, put on the defensive by other people’s behavior, sudden changes in temperature, any sudden change. (Again, absorbed in the womb, through the cord of attachment.)
Desire to get even with people for any imagined slight or insult. (Yes, this Cord Item, like the other two, had a completely different texture than the rest of the cord of attachment. These patterns were set up right from the start.)
Why Cut Cords of Attachment to Crazy Moms? Almost Unimaginable Pain It’s hard to imagine the pain of living with mental illness unless you’ve been there. You could have a cord of attachment to a parent, a child, a husband or wife who has severe problems — and form that cord long before you become aware there is even a problem.
Sometimes I like to call cutting cords to the mentally ill… part of the process of becoming a “Craziness Survivor.”
The anguish of becoming a Craziness Survivor includes the moment when it hits you. This person in your life is either out of control, chronically mentally ill, going through a breakdown, maybe all three at once.
And, sometimes, this moment of realization, in all its anguish, is what sticks in a cord of attachment.
If, like many readers of this blog, you happen to have a gift as an Empath, the anguish will be magnified many times over… and then all that suffering will become stuck in the cord of attachment.

Cords and Decording: releasing the burdens and unhealthy connections
What is cording?
But it is not just something that babies and ‘weak’ people do. Couples arguing for long periods of time cord. Frustrated bosses and unhappy reports do. Some of the most pervasive corders I have met have been very powerful business men. So obsessed with their work, with so much of their energy tied up in winning power- struggles, they often have no idea at all how to connect with another person when it comes to relationships, so they cord them in an attempt to make contact or get their needs met. Rapists and their victims cord each other, on one side due to the monstrous extent to which they cut off from their own internal life and relieve themselves by attacking others, and on the other side by the enormity of the catastrophic disruption of self that occurs when being invaded by so much hostility and sadism.
There are four basic kinds of cords:
The ones you throw because you are trying to help them. The ones they grab at you with to get something from you. The ones you throw because you feel overwhelmed and hurt by them. The ones they throw at you because they have been trying to avoid some of their own baggage by taking it out on you.

How to spot (and deal with) an energy vampire
Energy vampires most often target those who are sensitive and compassionate — and likely to lend a listening ear.
They leave you feeling drained after every conversation. They want your nonstop attention and the conversation is always about them. They may be charming, charismatic and the life-of-the-party personality. They also may cheat. They may lie. And it’s probably someone else’s fault when something goes wrong.
These are some (but certainly not all) of the traits you might run across in someone who is an “energy vampire.”
Some energy vampires may have inherited those character traits from a parent and they’re unaware of how their behavior affects others.
Spending too much time with energy vampires can make you sick What makes energy vampires so toxic is that they can be sources of chronic stress, says Northrup. Especially if the energy vampire is someone you can’t avoid — such as a spouse, a parent or a boss — constantly having your energy drained by that individual is a stressor, she says.
And that type of chronic stress is well known to have pretty deleterious effects on multiple systems in the body, including the immune, cardiovascular, neuroendocrine and central nervous systems.
Evidence shows that people under chronic stress are at a higher risk of chronic problems ranging from autoimmune diseases to heart disease, obesity and depression.
“They’re a health risk,” Northrup says about the energy vampires in our lives.
How to vanquish energy vampires (or at least not get sucked dry)
  1. Cut them out of your life (if you can)
  2. Set boundaries
  3. Lower expectations
  4. Be too tired for them
  5. ‘Grey rock’ them
  6. Know the difference between “venting” and “dumping.”
  7. Do NOT overreact
  8. Make sure you have a way to reality check
  9. Say “no” nicely

Cutting Ties with Toxic Family Members: An Act of Self-Care By Dr. Sharon Martin
Cutting ties with your family is difficult–and not what most people want. But sometimes it’s the only way to save your sanity and heal the emotional pain caused by a “toxic”* or abusive family.
Cutting ties with toxic family members is an act of self-care. Not something you do because you’re mean or spiteful. It’s something you do to protect your physical and mental health.
When is it appropriate to cut ties with a family member?
Toxic people disrupt your life and other relationships with behaviors such as these:

Lying

Blaming

Criticizing

Manipulating

Overreacting

Invalidating or ignoring your feelings

Undermining your relationship with your spouse, kids, or other relatives

Creating drama or crises

Passive-aggressive behavior (such as the silent treatment, deliberate procrastination, or criticism disguised as a compliment)

Gaslighting (a powerful form of manipulation that makes you doubt your perception of what’s going on)

Refusing to compromise

Yelling, cursing, or calling you names

Belittling your values, beliefs, choices

Gossiping or speaking ill of you behind your back

Making unreasonable demands

Expecting you to help them, but they aren’t available to help you

Threatening suicide or self-harm in order to get their way

Ruining holidays and special occasions

Playing the victim

Not taking responsibility for their own behavior

Refusing to apologize and if they do, it’s shallow, coerced, or fake

Lacking genuine concern or interest in you and your life

Volatile or unpredictable moods and behaviors

Creating so much stress, anxiety, and pain that your health, ability to work, or general wellbeing are negatively impacted

Interacting with them makes you feel worse

They are always right (and you are always wrong)

People can change, but toxic people rarely do. They lack self-awareness and don’t take responsibility for their actions. And since they don’t see how their behavior hurts you, they refuse to change. Instead, they blame you and expect you to cater to their demands.
5 Reasons we struggle to cut ties with a toxic family member
I think we can all agree that no one deserves to be abused. So, why do we give our family members a free pass? Why do we think we should tolerate such hurtful behavior from them?
  1. We don’t see their behavior as abusive
  2. Guilt
  3. Family loyalty You were probably primed to feel guilty by being taught that family loyalty is a virtue – that you should be unequivocally committed to your family no matter what. Healthy closeness includes mutual respect and care; it respects individuality and your right to think and feel differently than your family. But loyalty is often used to try to control family members who are exerting their independence and speaking out against abuse.
  4. Fear
  5. Love
Deciding to cut ties
It sucks to have to choose between yourself and your family members. It really does. But this is the reality. Remaining in a relationship with a toxic person is potentially harmful to your emotional and physical health and relationships
Tips for cutting ties with toxic family members
**Acknowledge that it’s abusive. You need to stop minimizing and denying the harm that your family member has caused.
**Give up the fantasy that they will change.
**Grieve the loss of having the kind of relationship you wanted with this person. Grieve the loss of having the parent/sibling/grandparent that you needed and deserved.
**Get support from a therapist, support group or 12-step group, or friend who’s experienced similar issues with their family. (Unfortunately, many friends mean well, but don’t “get it” and inadvertently add to our shame and guilt with judgmental comments or unrealistic expectations.)

7 Types of Toxic People and How to Spot Them
  1. The Conversational Narcissist Have you ever been talking to someone who keeps interrupting you?
  2. The Strait Jacket The straitjacket is someone who wants to control everything and everyone around them
  3. The Emotional Moocher An emotional moocher is also known as a “spiritual vampire,” because they tend to suck the positivity out of you or bleed you emotionally dry.
  4. The Drama Magnet Some toxic people are magnets for drama. Something is always wrong. Always.
  5. The JJ A JJ is a jealous-judgmental person. Jealous people are incredibly toxic because they have so much self-hate that they can’t be happy for anyone around them. And typically, their jealousy comes out as judgment, criticism, or gossip.
  6. The Fibber Whether they tell little falsehoods or major lies, it’s impossible to trust a liar in a relationship. Dishonesty drains us because we are constantly doubting their words.
  7. The Tank A tank crushes everything in its wake. A human tank is always right, doesn’t take anyone else’s feelings or ideas into account, and constantly puts themselves first. In a relationship, tanks are incredibly arrogant and see their personal opinions as facts. This is because they often think they are the smartest person in the room, so they see every conversation and person as a challenge that must be won over. They rarely see others as equals—and this can be challenging when trying to form a loving connection

2024.06.07 18:49 Tasty_Researcher_317 What If Genshin Impact Had No In-Game Map?

The world of Genshin Impact is a beautifully crafted landscape, filled with iconic landmarks. Imagine a version of the game where instead of an in-game map, players had to rely solely on narrative guidance to navigate.
In this scenario, players would need to pay close attention to their surroundings, take notes, and perhaps even draw their own maps. This approach would add a layer of immersion and challenge, as players follow directions provided by NPCs and in-game descriptions. There will be usable signpost scattered around the map and you can always ask the NPC for directions.
For instance, suppose the Traveler wants to journey to Liyue after defeating Dvalin. They might seek directions from Diluc in Dawn Winery, who could say:
"Head north from here. Instead of going straight to Stormterror's Lair, turn left and follow the road by the lake.
If you see a guard tower with an exotic design, that's the Liyue tower, and you're on the right track.
Next, the path will turn into a series of wooden platforms winding through large rocky hills known as 'Stone Gate.' From there, just follow the main road south."
This narrative-driven approach would encourage players to engage more deeply with the game world, enhancing their sense of adventure and discovery. Do you interested in experiencing the game in this way? I do, the upcoming region, Natlan, I'll keep the map in dark and navigating through trial & error and hand-drawn map. Who's with me? 😁

2024.06.07 18:40 TwatWaffleWhitney Neck Beard Double Take

I know Reddx is trying to move away from neckbeard stories, so I decided to finally submit my short NeckBeard encounter in the hopes that our humble lord Reddx would grace my scribbling with his melodious voice.
A quick warning that this contains attempted schmexual assault.
This story takes place ten years ago, two months after I turned nineteen. I had spent the previous year interning with a well-known horse trainer. (To this day, it's the coolest thing I have ever done.) I left home for the year-long internship a healthy 112lb at 5’1” and returned 105lb. I also had brown hair down to my waist, and my eyes appeared large in my too-thin face, and I was mistaken for 13 or 14 on a regular basis. I think I could have been considered beard-bait
Now, back living with my parents, I needed employment. My options were limited in our small town. I didn’t fancy trying to work at one of the crumbling fast food joints, so I applied for our local cleaning company. Being a maid sounded perfect! It combined my love of cleaning and my intense curiosity in the lives of strangers. I loved the idea of peeking into people`s homes and getting a glimpse of what took place behind twitching curtains.
After convincing the owner that I was indeed an adult and not a small child with a fake ID, I was hired. The owner placed me with two senior maids who we will call, Laverne and Shirley. Lavern and Shirley were former chain-smoking meth Muppets that now resembled shriveled craisins in their mid-forties. They had given up smoking for vaping; specifically, banana nut bread vape.
Laverne and Shirley had one other notable idiosyncrasy. Laverne would say something apropos of nothing, like “yesterday was too sunny for me” and finish the thought with a sing song “♪Ya know♪.” And then Shirley would repeat “♪Ya know♪.” This would continue the whole drive, between puffs of banana nut bread vape. To this day, I can’t hear someone say ‘ya know’ without muttering a ‘♪Ya know♪’ under my breath.
One fateful Tuesday, I pulled into work, hopped out of my 1993 Skylark, and into our cleaning van just like I had done for the past three weeks.
Shirley: Hey there TwatWaffle, we’re goin’ to a new house today. It’ll be our first time there. We might be there longer than usual.
Laverne: Hopefully you packed a good lunch. We can't stop today, ya know
Shirley: ♪ YA know ♪
OP: Oh, cool! I love cleaning new houses. Yeah, I packed lunch.
We were off on a new adventure. The light babbling of Laverne and Shirley’s inane chattering belied the utter horror that waited for me. Laverne turned into a housing development of McMansions, huge houses with two square feet of lawn, all built about five feet apart. We unloaded our equipment, swung open the door, and revealed… a beautiful, almost immaculate home. Sweet, this should be an easy, quick job. We all took a brief tour of the house to snoo- I mean, familiarize ourselves with the layout.
Shirley: The order says downstairs kitchen, bathroom, and living room. Upstairs bathroom and basement bathroom.
OP: Do you know how to get to the basement?
Laverne: No, this is our first time here too ya know
Shirley: ♪Ya know♪
So, we continued to familiarize ourselves by opening every door in the house to find the basement. After opening doors to pantries, bedrooms, closets, and an office, Laverne finally found the door that led to the basement.
Leverne: TwattWaffle! Shirley! Over here!
The door Laverne found opened to cement stairs that disappeared into a dark abyss. Shirley pushed past us and flicked on the light. The stairwell, now illuminated, led to a brightly lit exercise room. We all made our way down and surveyed the numerous and expensive pieces of workout equipment as we wandered deeper into the basement.
The basement was narrow but seemed to run the full length of the house. An opening to another hallway was at the opposite end of the exercise room. The hall was lit by a dull bulb, which cast a yellow light on the awful carpet it oversaw. The center of the carpet was a deep brown, and the edges a sad dusty pink. The carpet’s pile had long since had its will crushed and now laid flat. Stains of all shapes and viscosity made parts of the brown depressed carpet even darker and crustier. To the left were two closed doors; the first door had light leaking out around its poorly fitted frame, and the second was completely dark.
The gym room smelled musty and a little sweaty but nowhere near bile-inducing. However, the smell emanating from the hall threatened to steal my breakfast. Laverne and Shirley stood at the entrance to the hall, not daring to step on the carpet.
Shirley: TwatWaffle go open the first door.
OP: Sure
On tiptoe, I went to the first door, grabbed the greasy knob, turned it, and pushed. A wave of ammonia slapped me like a-pimp-named-slick-back and face fucked my nose raw dawg. I stepped back into the hall, trying to get a fresh-ish breath. But it was too late; opening the door let the full force of rank smell gush into the hall. So, instead, I pulled my shirt over my nose, which acted like a condom against the assault on my olfactory senses.
Leverne and Shirley had been watching, but when I reeled back, they both came forward to chastise me for being dramatic.
Shirley: Come on, it can’t be that… Oh hell
Leverne: Stop being a pus… Fuck me sideways.
The smell had finally wafted to them as they came forward, and they, too, pulled their shirts over their faces.
The three of us stood in the doorway, surveying the horror. A sink to the left is covered in black, something… Mold? Dust? Curiosity made me take a step forward; peering at the sink, I saw hair. Short black hairs, curly black hairs, and long strands of black hair covered the sink in a fine layer. I looked at the ground and saw that it, too, was covered in an assortment of hairs. I willed myself to look up at the mirror which hung over the sink. The mirror was so thickly speckled with white and pinkish spots that I could hardly see my face. My stomach lurched and rolled; I knew too well what those milky spots were from.
Then, I went to the porcelain throne that was once a functional toilet but had become a biohazardous receptacle some time ago. Brown sludge filled the entire bowl. Thick yellow-brown stains colored the outer rim and ran down the base, pooling at the bottom. This sight and the overpowering stench finally got me, and I wretched.
Laverne: OK! I’ll knock out the upstairs pot, Laverne, you start on the kitchen, and I’ll help you when I’m finished. TwatWaffle, get started here.
Spinless people pleasing me croaked
OP: Yeah, okay.
Laverne and Shirley quickly walked away and booked it back upstairs. I went to my cleaning caddy, opened the bottle of bleach, and inhaled deeply. The bleach burnt in my nose, but it also gave me a little relief from the putrid smells gang banging my nose. Next, I pulled on my thick rubber gloves, summoned all the willpower I possessed, and headed back to the toilet. I pushed the handle, hoping to flush the fecal McSlurry, but nothing happened. I took the top off the tank and found that the pull chain had come undone. The chain reattached, I pushed again. Water rushed into the bowl, and the liquid butt fudge began to rise. Sheer panic ripped through my heart as I contemplated having to mop old stagnant shit off the floor. The slurry came level with the rim of the bowl when suddenly I heard a glop glop. Air from the pipes escaped, and slowly, the sewage oozed down the toilet drain and away from the rim of the bowl.
One crisis averted, I decided to start on the sink while the toilet’s tank refilled. It was going to take two or three more flushes to get it all down. I began scrubbing and wiping, letting myself get lost in my own head as I performed the familiar task. After about five minutes of ferocious cleaning, a sound cut into my consciousness—a heavy sort of breathing. I looked up and caught in the mirror a form filling the doorway. I jumped and spun around to face The Thing.
I hastily babbled
OP: Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry. You scared me. Hi, I’m TwatWaffle, I’m here with Local Cleaning Company. Did you need to use this bathroom? I’ll be done shortly if you can wait.
The Thing stood silently, his mass filling the doorway. A light grey shirt with dark stains under each arm struggled and failed to contain the bulk of his abdomen. I could almost hear the cries of agony from the threads of fabric that made up his tortured navy sweatpants, which were being stretched to their limit. The flesh was so abundant on his face that it rendered it almost featureless. Angry red pimples dappled the entire landscape of his skin.
OP: I can step out now, if you can’t wait.
The Thing just stood there, staring. By this time, I had huffed enough bleach that the bathroom smells were bearable. But The Thing’s body odor had Billy Cosby-ed my defenses and was having its way with my piriform cortex. As nonchalantly as possible, I brought my bleached, soaked rag up to my face, like wiping sweat from my brow, and took another whiff of bleach. We stood just staring at each other for a long, awkward minute.
OP: Okay… Well, if you need the bathroom, let me know.
I turned and went back to cleaning. I flushed the toilet for a third time. Now, the toilet water was just cloudy with sediment. I scrubbed at the left-over streaks that had crusted and clung to the bowl. A fourth and final flush had the toilet looking as good as it was ever going to look again.
I might have been looking at this disgusting commode, but all my attention was on the figure lurking in the doorway. As I got on my knees, intent on cleaning up the thick, viscous yellow puddles, I heard The Things breathing increase and then fade. I dared a glance over my shoulder; The Thing was gone.
Finished with the toilet, I turned my attention to the shower. A glance at the drain revealed that, to Ramtides's query, The Thing was a waffle stomper. Clearly, with the toilet out of commission, The Thing had been using the shower to relieve themself. Hair was also sprinkled liberally over it all.
Giving myself a little pep talk.
OP: Okay, I’m almost done. I can do this. I’m almost finis-
Then, from the doorway, a voice gurgled
The Thing: Hello M’lady.
I whip around, slightly less startled this time but twice as confused. The Thing is talking? And it changed clothes? It now wore a black shirt and cargo shorts, which fit him only slightly better than his previous attire.
OP: Hi, Do you need the bathroom now? I’m pretty much finished; just need to wipe down the shower. I fixed the toilet, so it flushes now.
The Thing: Ahh, clever and beautiful. May I know M`lady’s name?
I was a little confused, considering I told him my name about fifteen minutes ago. But then I also struggle remembering names sometimes.
OP: I’m TwatWaffle, with Local Cleaning Company.
I noticed movement over The Things' shoulder, another shape in the dim hallway. And that is when everything clicked. I remembered seeing pictures lining the upstairs hall—pictures of a Mom, Dad, and two identical cherubic little boys—twins. This then was Thing2, and I had previously met Thing1. Dear god, basement-dwelling twin neckbeards.
Thing2: TwatWaffle, a lovely name for a lovely lady. M’lady, I need your assistance; I accidentally kicked my computer mouse under my bed. Neither I nor Thing1 can reach it. Perhaps M’lady would be willing to retrieve it.
OP: I’m not supposed to do anything that’s not on our cleaning order.
Thing2: But I’m not asking you to clean anything. I’m simply requesting that you do something for me as a favor. Surely, helping your client reach something isn’t against your rules. It’ll only take you a minute.
OP: I guess not, just let me spray down the shower and then I’ll help you.
Thing2: Excellent…
Thing2 lumbered back to their room. Thing1 stood for a moment longer in the hallway, staring before waddling after its brother. I finish up the shower, gathered the trash and used cleaning wipes, and put my supplies back in the caddy. I unscrew the bleach bottle one more time and inhale the fumes before walking to the next room and entering The Things’ nest.
What hit me first this time was a sweaty, musty smell, underlined by a salty, stale smegma. Then, as I stepped forward, the unmistakable stank of rotting food came edged in, joining the bukaki of smells in my nose. This room was also narrow and long. On the right and left sides against the wall were desks, each had two large monitors. LED gamer lights were hung on the wall, but the thick layer of dust that coated everything in the room dimmed their rainbow-light pattern. The only other lighting in the room came from a narrow window set high up in the wall and the glow from the monitors.
But scant light clearly illuminated dishes, pizza boxes, cans, and assorted bottles filled with suspicious liquids that lay in heaps around the desks. Stray bits of trash were scattered everywhere else. Beneath my feet was brown-crusted flooring that might have once resembled a carpet. On the back wall were two full beds set end to end. Thing2 sat on the right bed, and Thing1 sat in a chair, staring at something on one of the monitors.
Thing2: Here M’lday, it’s under my bed.
Holding my breath, I walked forward, knelt on the hard, stiff carpet, and peered under the bed. The mouse lay right there at the edge. Surely, Thing2 could have reached that far himself? I picked it up and held the mouse out to him.
Thing2: Thank you. You’re so kind and helpful. Perhaps you can sit with me for a moment and talk. It’s so rare that I get to meet such a beautiful lady.
OP: You’re welcome, but I have to go. Shirley and Laverne are waiting for me, and we have more work to do.
I turned to walk away when I felt something I will never forget. A pudgy, soft, and clammy hand gripped my wrist. It was so soft, like a baby's hand that had been enlarged. I’d never felt someone's hand before or since that was so fleshy and uncalloused. Sometimes, as I fall asleep, I feel that hand gripping my wrist again.
I froze and looked at this monstrous beast that grasped me. His fleshy acne riddle face smirked back at me in the dimness. I heard a groan and creaking metal as Thing1 exited his chair and stood behind me. Fear now engulfed me to my bones. I had been too distracted by the disgusting state of everything to consider Thing2 might have ill intentions. Or maybe I had inhaled enough fumes from cleaning supplies to cloud my judgment.
Thing1 took a step toward us as Thing2 began pulling me towards him. I braced myself, but the floor was slick, and I slid closer to Thing2. I wanted to scream, I wanted to say something, but fear had gripped my throat as hard as Thing2 gripped my arm.
Shirley: TwattWaffle! TwatWaffle! Where the hell are you, girl?
Shirley called from the hallway. Her raspy smoker's voice sounded like an angel's call to me, and her call gave me the strength to finally speak.
OP: Shirley! I’m over here!
Thing1 plopped back into his chair, and Thing2, startled by the sound of another person, loosened his grip enough that I could yank myself free. I picked up my cleaning caddy and ran from the room as Shirley’s head peaked around the door.
Shirley: Come on, lazy girl. We’ve been done for ten minutes already. You’re making us late. I’ve told you; you've got to go faster, girl.
OP: Yes, ma’am, sorry.
Back upstairs, I shakily helped load all our cleaning things back into the van, and we left. A week later, I quit and found better employment. Before that day, I had been rather naive, but I would never allow myself to get into another situation like that again.
I know my story is short and neckbeard-light, but I hope you found some entertainment in it anyway. Reddx, if you read this, thank you! And if you don’t, thank you for the hours of entertainment you’ve given me.

Which bronzer is your favourite and why?
I have never purchased a bronzer before so any help is appreciated!
For reference, I have light warm-leaning neutral skin and am debating between these 4 bronzers:
• Clinique True Bronze in Sunblush (shade not pictured because it’s not sold at sephora)
• Anastatia Beverly Hills Cream Bronzer in Amber (heard it can lean orange)
• Lys Powder Bronzer in shade Motivate or Harmony
• Mac Mineralized Skin Finish in Give Me Sun or a shade less-orangey
Not too picky when it comes to form (cream vs powder vs stick) but I want a bronzer that is easy to blend (melts into skin), unscented, and looks like a natural tan - not too orange and maybe more rosy-warm? I also have acne-prone skin so I don’t want anythig too heavy..
Open to suggestions that aren’t on this list as well :) Thank you!!

2024.06.07 18:07 uncle_barb7 Which lens to focal length best on?

Hi Reddit
So I'm primarily megapixel film photographer. I like to shoot analog ibis, the film look, and generally unchargeable batteries. Landscapes, street (like the actual asphalt), and upside down dogs (belly). My question is, which lens for a dollar will do the most picture? Prime zooms seem like a good start but will I get bored and need mroe dopamine? I want to keep price low however am plannig to work for national geogaphy doing zebras and would like if it could work for that too. All my piuctures I take in dumpster behind 7/11 so low light also pretty imporatnt. I am brand new to photohgraphy and looking for advice. What do you charge your family for taking pictures of a barbeque? Follow me on instagram. Budget is $3000.

In the picturesque village of Ghurjung nestled in the serene hills of Kaski, Nepal, lies a beacon of hope for the local children – the Charity Home Away Home. This humble abode serves as a sanctuary for young minds, providing them with the tools they need to build a brighter future. But behind this haven stands not just a building, but a community of caring individuals dedicated to making a difference.
At the forefront of this movement are the Highland Eco Trek Team and Clint, whose unwavering support has transformed the lives of these children. With a shared passion for philanthropy and a deep connection to the land, they have become the driving force behind the success of the Charity Home Away Home.
Their journey began with a simple desire to give back to the community that had welcomed them with open arms. Recognizing the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty, they set out to support the schooling of the village children. Through fundraisers, donations, and countless hours of hard work, they have been able to provide these children with access to quality education, giving them the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
But their impact extends far beyond the classroom walls. With boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm, the Highland Eco Trek Team and Clint have become mentors and role models for the children of Ghurjung. They organize extracurricular activities, from sports tournaments to arts and crafts sessions, enriching the lives of these youngsters and fostering a sense of community spirit.
One of the most beautiful moments shared between the volunteers and the children is when they gather on the countryside, surrounded by the majestic beauty of nature. Here, amidst the rolling hills and sweeping vistas, bonds are formed and memories are made that will last a lifetime. It’s a testament to the power of human connection and the difference that can be made when people come together with a common goal.
As the sun sets over Ghurjung village, casting a warm glow over the landscape, there is a sense of hope and optimism in the air. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the Highland Eco Trek Team and Clint, the children of this community are not just dreaming of a better tomorrow – they are actively creating it, one step at a time. And in doing so, they are proving that with compassion and determination, anything is possible.
