2024.05.14 19:05 Traditional-Apple168 Second Take at a Subclass Fantasy

Im bored. Heres a silly idea to dislike.

Subclass Themes

With the darkness subclasses being based on mental states, I took the ideology of the id, ego, and super ego to be the darkness elements. I took the ego to be stasis as you are forcing your will into reality and overriding the will of others. I understood the superego to be strand. Understanding the world around you, the complexity and the conections of it all, the restrictions and necessity of reality. That leaves the id. Desires and instinct. Fantasies and dreams. Compulsions.
Another theme that had to be included was that of opposition. Strand is about creation and void is about absence. Solar and stasis, while much more complicated than fire and ice, do oppose each other in more meaningful ways. Arc is all about mobility, energy, adapting, and change. The opposite would be complacency. Sloth. Giving in to your desires.
The last requirements would be to have anti-barrier perks and anti-overload perks. This was the simplest and could be flavored in any which way, with anti barrier having some sort of buff, and anti overload having some sort of debuff.
With this I introduce Soul, a form of darkness that takes the shape of a dark red liquid. Names could all use some work.

Verbs

Seethe (Debuff): Soul seeps into enemies minds revealing their anger. Form of cc that has non-boss units attack nearby enemies. Combatants affected cant discern between friend or foe. Enemy guardians afflicted have friendly fire enabled and increased recoil. Reticles will slowly shift towards allies within ? meters.
Despair (Debuff): Soul clouds your head. Prevents any health gain during affliction. Enemies take damage over time. Ends with a burst of damage. Strong against overloads.
Wrath (Buff): Release your inner fury. Weapons are empowered dealing increased damage based on targets missing health. Capped at 35%. Strong against Barrier champions.
Envy (Buff): Enemy accuracy towards buffed targets is reduced based on distance. Closer enemies are more likely to miss shots. Melee damage received is reduced.
Harrow (Class Pickup): Soul matter coalesces on the floor in large red pools after killing debuffed targets. Enemies standing on Harrow take minor damage. Interacts with aspects and fragments. Armor charge works off time spent on Harrow.

Disclaimer

I was more focused on ideology. I have yet to refine ideas but aspects, melees, and supers allow for a lot of creativity of which i am lacking atm. If you have any suggestions, changes or anything let me know. Change the verbs or the whole damn thing, just want any sort of discussion. No its not serious nor do I think there is any chance of this.

Hunter

Mind Tap (Melee): Throw an ice pick. Headshots cause targets to Seethe. Bodyshots cause Despair.
Merciless (Aspect): While Wrathful heal for a very small portion of the damage dealt to Despairing targets. Despair will spread between close enemies.
Paranoia (Aspect): Dodging while standing on Harrow puddles lets the hunter dissolve into Soul matter becoming untargetable, gain heavy damage resist, and be able to move through units. While in Paranoia gain Wrathful. Gain 200% increased melee regen and movement speed. Offensive actions pull you out. Displayed as large waves moving inside.
Paint it Red (Aspect): Damaging Despairing targets releases Harrow. Has a short cooldown.
Hemophobia (Super): Explode into a massive puddle of Soul matter leaving Harrow around you. Does increased Harrow damage. Light attack throws ice picks that cause despair. Deals more damage to targets on Harrow. Heavy Attack dashes forward dealing light damage. Dodge refreshes on use.

Titan

Menacing Strike(Melee): Summon a massive maw from your hand inflicting Despair in a small aoe. Hits grant Wrath.
Unholy Soul (Aspect): Standing in Harrow puddles slowly provides health and Envy. Kills on Harrow refresh the duration and increase the size of the pool.
Terror (Aspect): Soul kills charge up a meter. When fully charged your next powered melee will deal 3x damage, have much more range, grant damage resistance, and grant Envy for a brief period. Melee charge is separate from the standard (think gunpowder gamble).
Finality (Aspect): Powered melee final blows while Wrathful refresh 90% of melee energy. Using your aerial move will slam down releasing Harrow and refilling active weapons. Costs melee energy.
Sorrow (Super): Whip around chains before tossing them at the target enemy. Enemy erupts in massive damage Despairing all nearby combatants and releasing Harrow. After a delay the target erupts again, taking damage based on the damage taken during the super.

Warlock

Dread (Melee): Shoot forward a cloud, raining and Despairing all enemies hit along the way. At max distance or on large targets the cloud lingers.
Agnosiophobia (Aspect): While grounded; press your air move to vanish, reappearing at a Harrow covered point of your choice. Emerging and departing causes a Despairing and Envious aoe. Large amounts of Harrow are released at the point that you left. Standing on Harrow gives you 100% grenade regen rate.
Mind Flayer (Aspect): Seething lasts longer on enemies. Seething enemies that die near you release parasites that travel to all unaffiliated enemies standing in connected Harrow.
Tides of War (Aspect): Activating melee will release a tsunami of Harrow in an aoe a bit larger than consecration. Enemies hit by the raging wave take massive damage and are Seethed. Wave leaves Harrow in its wake.
Beast Within (Super): Coat yourself in Soul Matter and emerge in a different form. A massive centipede with increased movement speed and trample damage. Light attack stops you, before lunging at enemies. Heavy attack is a massive charged leap. If charged all the way gain distance and release Harrow where you land.

Grenades

Harrow Grenade: Can bounce. On detonation releases Harrow. Enemies hit will leave Harrow in their wake.
Bunkering Grenade: Sticks to surfaces but not enemies. When deployed projects a ring. Allies standing within the ring gain Envy. Enemies within Despair.
Winding Grenade: On hitting an enemy or surface releases 3 bolts, quickly striking the nearest enemies in rage. Enemies hit Seethe.

2024.05.14 18:48 tommygunz007 Can I share a good rumor?

Ok, for those of you who actually know all the facts, please chime in. I am merely sharing a rumor.
Backstory: British Airways back in 2020 had planned on firing 31,000 flight attendants and force them to be rehired as contractors at a 20% pay cut.
Here is a vintage article about it: https://liveandletsfly.com/british-airways-fire-flight-attendants/
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/jul/17/ba-begins-to-carry-out-its-fire-and-rehire-threat-to-jobs
The story as I was told, was that BA started a contractor FA group that only did Domestic flying, but cross trained them to take over International flying, and then fired all their non-contract flight attendants.
Ok, so let's jump to 2017. Dorito, a few years back, bankrupted Messaba and Pinnacle and from the ashes created Endeavor Air, a new regional airline. Management came to us and said they were looking to shrink their agencies from 6 regionals down to 3, to provide higher quality and maintain control across their brand.
Then there were rumors that they were going to MERGE Endeavor Air with Delta mainline. At the time we all thought regional gals and dudes would get a raise and a promotion, but in hindsight, do you think they would have FIRED their mainline staff and forced them to work under the contractor umbrella? The AFA would most certainly approve, as it meant more money for them and they could finally get those Delta Coins they so desperately want.
The reality is we will never know, as the apparent day of signing, the Pilot's Union put the kabash on the deal, stating that the senior Pilots at 9E would have a crap quality of life being mixed into the mainline fold, and the Mainline Pilots would also suffer as their seniority would then be skewed with all the merging and shifting. So the deal was left for dead.
I would be curious if there are any active people in this sub, that were in those meetings or had any inside speculation on how the deal would have gone down for the FA's?

2024.05.14 18:07 TaskasMum Dog communication

Hello there!
My assistance dog (Im in the UK) is charity trained. As part of my training with my first assistance dog (12 1/2 years ago) they introduced Canine Calming Signals, and the person who first recognised them, Turid Rugaas.
Turid is a behaviourist and an affirmative, force-free trainer in Norway. She first talked about things most people easily recognise now- like a play bow- and was there at the start of increasing awareness about dogs' awareness of humans, and ability to read humans. You might be asking yourself, tho... what does this matter for a service dog?
Your dog has nothing better to do than watch you, constantly, and try to figure you out... so if you understand what things are especially meaningful to your dog, you can make it easier for them to understand what you want, need, like, or don't like.
For example- a yawn and a look away after licking the lips. This is clear "dog speak" for "Calm down, there is nothing to worry about, and you being all excited is gonna stress me out".
Watch your dog and see how often THEY use the sign!
Dogs (mostly) naturally do everything they can to "keep the peace" with other dogs (and people). The way they approach each other, the way they hold their bodies... it tells you what they are thinking. Each dog varies a bit, so learning *your* dog is important.
When my dog is being silly and over-excited, or conversely, is stressed in a place that might be unfamiliar (for example), I can look at him, lick my lips, yawn, and turn my head away- and he thinks "Oh, she's not worried, and she doesn't want me to be..." and he will calm down. In one of her books, there is a great story where someone moves with their dog to a house that has a commuter rail track at the foot of the garden. Every time the train goes by, the dog gets incredibly stressed and shakes, cries, and tried to hide. They looked at the time tables, and just before the train was to come, the people rewarded the dog, and as the train started to approach they engaged in a positive interaction like playing or cheerful grooming. When the dog starts to show signs of distress, they lick-yawn-turn. Over time, the dog learned "trains don't scare mum and dad, so, they don't train me either" and the dog no longer cared about the train.
You can go anywhere to learn more, and there are some good books- but it's worth it. In time, you learn to read your dog as well as communicate with them- both strengthen and improve both your training and your relationship.

2024.05.14 18:05 Kchotier I wish I wasn't vegan

It makes me so sad. Now that I've opened my eyes to the reality of animal exploitation, I'll never be able to look away.
I still love my family and friends... but being vegan has made it much harder to bond with them. I can't not see them as people who have chosen to be murderers. They can't not see me as a moralist. The hardest part of being vegan is the social interactions.
I mean, sure, it took me a long time to become vegan. People don't choose to be lied to since childhood about happy meat and all that. But come on... what else but selfishness can rationally and coherently justify not being vegan?
I've been searching for an answer to this question for several years. I really, really wish I was wrong about being vegan. I really, really wish that there was a rational, coherent, honest argument that came to the conclusion that "carnists aren't selfish murderers". I would be so happy to give up veganism. But I've never found such an argument. I'm forced to either suffer social stigma or be a selfish murderer.
How do you all deal with the deep selfishness of human beings?

2024.05.14 18:03 Dark_Rose635 I might be incompetent

I'm not enough it seems. I'm havong trouble putting things to word but I'll try my best. I don't remember 99% of my life which is my childhood. I was bullied, emotionally neglected in home and suffered other kinds of abuse. This is as far as I remember because I wrote about them in my diary and used to constantly think about it. When the pandemic started, I tried my best to heal from it all despite still going through them and miraculously did recover alot. But I'm still broken even after everything. My bestfriend too suffered a lot including child neglect but instead, she turned out to be very independent whereas I'm like a clueless 5 year old. I can't do anything properly by myself. I can't take medicine consistently and barely takes care of my health without external force. I find it hard to even move out of my bed. I'm only moderately good at everything I try; art, academics, looks etc. Barely above average. I have trouble in trying my best, I don't give up but I can't put much effort. I self sabotage. When I try my absolute best to heal from an issue, another three pops up. I'm never enough, I can never be the last one standing. I'm all too pathetic and powerless. Not even ordinary but entirely an outcast. I've been fighting for too long and it still hurts, I am too tired; but I have a dream and so I must keep going on. It never got better with time. I act cute and innocent so that my parents still love me and would excuse my incapability. I calculate all my social interactions in a way that I never get bullied but never ends up being the centre of attention. I only have one close friend whom I want to stay beside forever. I never reach my goals. I'm not proud of anything in my life. I hate living as me. I want to rip my soul apart and create something entirely different from it, something that is nothing like me. I tried, idk how much longer I can go on. No one is hurting me anymore but I'm still in pain. I don't want to give up. I want to keep on going but it really just hurts.

2024.05.14 17:59 ShadowChateau Is there something I should consider to make this magic system more compelling?

The Neon Age was when people discovered strange brain waves that stem from the mind that can only be detected by the use of neon. Most people, when surrounded by neon, give off a dim glow that can only be seen by special cameras. But if you train your mind, you'll start making a visible light appear in nearby neon gas.
With enough training one can reshape these lights into strange beings called sparklers that can physically touch and manipulate anything within reach of the neon gas, but they can also jump from cloud of neon to cloud of neon instantaneously, regardless of the distance between them. These sparklers seem to be tireless, strong, and in some cases, independent.
Later on, it was learned that, through exposure to neon, one is able to slowly learn to grow their output and even shape these brain waves and manipulate the neon around them.
This has led to the creation of neon wires and their use as whiplike weapons that neon mages can manipulate mentally. These whips can output thousands of pounds of kinetic force in explosive pulses if weilded by experienced neon mages.
Neon mages, as mentioned before, can also create sparklers that can manifest anywhere there is neon gas. Though some more experienced neon mages can force these sparklers outside of neon gas, though their ability to influence the physical world is greatly reduced.
Neon mages also man titans, large mecha that use neon wires control their movements. The neon mages interact with a spirit "Ai", basically weird fleshy computers made from lab grown brain tissue.
Neon mages also use a form of meditation in a chamber of neon gas to connect to other neon mages lightyears away. They can communicate important information across the galaxy in real time, like living phones. Of course neon is still not oxygen so they need to leave these chambers eventually or have special injections of oxygen into their circulatory system.
The only thoughts I have on the dangers of being a neon mage are that the stronger the mage gets, the more neon will "pull" on their minds, essentially causing skips in mental processes while in the presence of neon. And the more powerful you are, the more potent these skips will be. Minor skips can lead to memory loss and disorientation. While major skips can lead to seizures and even organ failure.
Any thoughts on what to improve? Anything that this system is missing?
Edit: The story I'm writing that uses this magic system revolves around gladiator mech warriors that fight duels and death matches on the behalf of noble families to secure contracts or settle conflicts. I don't know if that helps.

2024.05.14 17:27 Sin-God A Very Curious Coincidence: A Setting That Has Jumpchain-Like Elements

This post, in its fullness, is about Ta Mando and the Shiftverse, a setting we'll talk about in a bit but before we get started I do wanna mention something kind of neat.
I've vaguely alluded to how I learned about jumpchains, mentioning that it was through a CYOA creator who also does jumps. Pre-pandemic I was a member of the Make Your Choice & NSFW CYOA communities, and I saw FancyFireDrake's Goddess of Mankind CYOA and I really liked it so I checked out some of their other stuff. At the time I was already paying attention to NSFW CYOAs because of TroyxPage, specifically Grand Adonis which to this day remains at least in my top three favorite CYOAs of all time, and when I saw that I really liked Goddess of Mankind I wanted to see what else FFD had done so I looked through their stuff and saw stuff on Jumpchains. This was happening around the same time I was joining the Shiftverse as a player.
Through the power of coincidence I was joining the Shiftverse, an original setting by a friend of mine named Philososhy, at about the same time I was learning about jumpchains and beginning to really discover the power of crossover fan fiction and stuff like that. Here's a little bit of canon Luciano Lore; as a child I began writing, which is part of what I do professionally and semi-professionally, by writing self insert crossover fan fiction though at the time I didn't know these things had terms. I was raised overseas, as I am an army brat, and I was homeschooled, and my family wanted me to get into reading and writing, and so they had me write stories. I don't think they anticipated the lifelong rollercoaster that that would send me on. Anyways, back to the central topic.

The Shiftverse

Before we get started I wanna say that I'm describing a LIVING setting I'm a PLAYER in not the MASTER of so this information will be necessarily limited and imperfect. That said I'm a VERY passionate player, and given the RL circumstances of this setting and my character's circumstances I know a healthy chunk of lore, though I am not even scratching the surface due to this being a special interest of mine and me being a big nerd, plus my character also has had the chance to learn a lot of neat stuff about the metaphysics at play here and has just been taught a lot of cool lore on the interior of things, SOME of which I'm communicating here in a very broad sense of strokes.
The very, very basic gist of the shiftverse from a player character perspective, is that player characters are... reality TV stars whose lives are shows airing on multiversal, cosmic televisions, and they are watched by monstrous, unknowable beings, while the player characters go from world to world, for various different amounts of time, and just LIVE among the inhabitants of the world, free to do as they please and to interact with locals however they wish. It is a pure coincidence that this VERY basic gist sounds so remarkably similar, conceptually at least, to Jumpchains, though as a very funny matter of fact in the SPECIFIC setting I have a character in, there are others with player characters and another one of us knew about jumpchains before I started sharing stuff about jumpchains in the Ta Mando (the SPECIFIC world my character lives in, which is just one of many settings which exist for the Shiftverse) server (which is public, I'll be posting a link to the world-anvil later).
All of the player character primes (the term used to apply to beings who get sent from world to world for the sake of the tv shows, which does not encompass ALL multiversal wanderers in this setting, and also NPC primes exist) I know of are humans from a mundane Earth, in fact many of us in Ta Mando (though almost certainly not all of us) are from the SAME Earth. Certainly all of the player character primes for Kanda, which is the central location, "location" being used real loosely, are from the same Earth and about the same time period.
Primes get superpowers of various sorts to help us survive and live exciting lives. We're also capable of using the powers native to the world's we visit, though learning and attaining such powers isn't always easy. My character is Jonathan Mondragon, who on Earth prior to them becoming a Prime, was a Puerto Rican doctor. I did insert SOME traits of myself in them, they are non-binary, they are bilingual, they are a charisma main, but my ORIGINAL idea for this character was for them to be a Caribbean Homelander (they have a few different powers, namely the powers of Superman (Smallville style, so the powers are steadily growing and new ones become accessible over time) & a set of social powers, which along with Omega Beams and some doctohealer stuff represent their STARTING kit, in the time since they've arrived they've become a champion of a deity of truth and honor, gained the very beginnings of a dragon's power set, and have attuned to the Ta Mando equivalent to The Force, so we love a chaotic ass power-grabber). That idea... did not last long. Jonathan has been in Ta Mando for a few months now, and is a solidly moral person due in large part to the fucking nightmare they had to endure in the beginning of their time here (they were deliberately summoned by the people of a colony of Kanda who were in a bad spot, and Jon has largely succeeded in solving SOME of the problems but it was ROUGH), and the growth they've endured as a result of both pain and the good things they've done since they arrived. Some other primes include characters with really strong magic stuff, someone who is a Saiyan, and a person who is the Avatar, as well as people more attuned to the Ta Mando version of the force and a Space Marine, so as you can see our power sets can VARY.
There are other vague similarities with Jumpchains, such as vague similarities between items in jumps and items in shifts, as a prime tends to get SOME basic items at the start of a chain (usually a facility which serves as a house, which can differ from prime to prime, and functions as a bit of a less protected/more accessible warehouse) but not ALL primes get that and SOME primes get WILDLY more advanced facilities than others. OTHER items can be included as well, as my character has stuff for medicine and farming, and I know of other primes who've got uranium mines, lightsabers, and even pets as part of their starting kit. There ARE difference, one of the biggest differences is that a shift's (the in-universe term for a stint in a world/setting) length is NOT a decade and can last however long the eldritch beings who run the show feel like, though from what I, Luciano, know it seems like most last about a human lifetime, though there are some that last WILDLY longer than that. Another significant difference, as has been explained and hinted at to my character, is that remembering the details of a shift once you leave is not guaranteed, nor is having and keeping the same powers you once had, and all of this is similar to the idea of drawbacks in a jumpchain but these changes, as far as I know, across shifts do not confer any advantages in exchange like a jumpchain drawback does.

Ta Mando

I'm not gonna say much here, I'll just post two links. One is to the World Anvil for Ta Mando, one SPECIFIC setting in the Shiftverse (there are many worlds someone could get shifted too, Ta Mando is just one of them). The other is to my character's World Anvil page, Jonathan Mondragon. This is not SUPER up to date, but it's the beginning of a good set of articles for people in Soterri, as well as a way to learn more about my adventures. Also, this is a text-based TTRPG campaign and we play using GURPS. It's... weird. I'm very much a D&D person, I've been playing D&D over half of my life (literally, I'm 29, the first time I played D&D I was 13, and I had the books BEFORE then), so it's been an adjustment. I like it though, my character DOES feel powerful and has had plenty of kicks moments, but just LEARNING what I can do and the mechanics of everything was a trip.
Anyways, Ta Mando is my favorite TTRPG setting I've ever been in, there's a lot to discover, there's a lot more for me to do there, and I sometimes think about doing a Shiftverse jumpdoc. I think it'd be very funny to blend the two systems like how I've blended the Troyverse & Jumpchains, and how I plan to blend Akumakami64's Love Azathoth CYOA (have a little surprise announcement, as a treat, for making it this far, but do note that I'm in the middle of my busiest time of the year so this won't be for a minute), but truthfully I just don't know enough to really do it justice. Maybe someday I'll make a jumpdoc for The Shiftverse. it could be fun honestly.

2024.05.14 17:24 Am_lost44 32 days sober, terrified to relapse tonight

Hey everyone,
I am currently 32 days sober, which is the longest I have ever gone through my own individual willpower (the longest I've gone was a result of visiting my girlfriend overseas, can't drink when youre with someone 24/7 and didn't want to risk secretly drinking and getting caught.) Overall I truly do feel significantly better than I did drinking, but in some ways I'm still dying for a drink, and on the worst of days I contemplate giving in. The worst part of it is I don't wanna drink with friends or at a party, I want to get my pint of vodka (which I know in the end won't be nearly enough to leave me satisfied, but my brain justifies the amount because it's not "that much alcohol"), wait till everyone is asleep and drink myself into oblivion doing something mindless like poorly playing a game or watching a show I won't remember the plot of the next day. Something about the numbness just absolutely entices me at this moment.
The driving force in my ability to stay sober this long has been a complete reset of my openness with alcoholism. At my last relapse, I told my girlfriend, my family, and my friends what had happened and that I truly had no option to drink any more, no matter what. Having this clean slate has kept me honest, and everytime I want to drink thinking of having to go back to being a liar about my sobriety and the secrecy scares me away from relapse well enough. The thought of having to rebuild these 32 days from 0 also turns me away almost always, but today I just can't seem to get the idea of a drink out of my head.
I think I'm struggling to come to grips with sober life, the lack of easy and immediete external dopamine boost to quell the boredom and emptiness I feel without the crutch of alcohol. I've been to AA multiple times but found it counter intuitive for me personally, in some ways it helped but in more ways it almost triggered me to want to drink more, I can't really explain why. I try to fill my time with hobbies and social interactions, and I am in therapy which helps a lot. I have an incredible amount of support from family and friends. But at the same time, I feel like there is so much worry and sadness within my mind that nothing seems to truly subdue, and my addict brain loves to remind me that alcohol will let me escape, which might be true for 10 minutes, but even in my deepest cravings I know I won't find what I'm looking for, and I'll only feel worse for it.
I don't know what the point of posting this is. Maybe to get my thoughts out of my head, to hold myself accountable, or to let someone else in my position let them know they aren't alone in how they feel, and in turn make me feel less alone, because right now I do feel very alone. I am on my lunch break and its taking everything I can to not go to the store and get my vodka that I can hide until tonight when I finally crack it open and the external world melts into the background. At times like this my girlfriend has said she wants me to reach out to her so I don't do anything I'll regret, but at the same time she doesnt understand what its like. She cant fathom the idea of wanting a drink at 11am to make the day better, she barely drinks even with people at events, and so it makes it feel almost shameful and like I'll worry her to reach out, making me not want to. Idunno.
This sub has been extremely important to my sobriety, and I want to thank everyone here for your help and hope that we can get through this disease together.

2024.05.14 17:23 Contactunderground The Concept of “Rare Earth” is a materialist scientific challenge to the ET hypothesis for flying saucers. This beautifully produced BBC documentary linked below outlines the amazingly unique conditions here on Earth that allowed intelligent life to evolve from a materialist point of view.

I recommend that the Contact and Disclosure Communities discuss this BBC Documentary “Rare Earth.”
J. Burkes MD 2022

Physicalism is the ideological perspective of materialist science. It is the dominant philosophy of academia and as such determines much of the public discourse on the possibilities of intelligent life, other than human, manifesting on our planet. Physicalism declares that energy and matter are the wellsprings of creation and that thought, i.e., consciousness, “emerges” out of matter. This scientific ideological position historically has been opposed by all religions. Religious faith asserts that thought (the mind of God) is primary and responsible for the material universe.
Flying saucers are a challenge to the Western materialist science. What are now called Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs) clearly violate the laws of physics as determined by professional science. In the growing societal debate on UAPs, I believe it is important for contact experiencers and all who desire full disclosure on UFOs, be aware of the underpinnings of academia’s objections to flying saucers. For these reasons, I recommend that we discuss the “Rare Earth” hypothesis as it has been used to deny the possibility that flying saucers might be controlled by extraterrestrial intelligences.

This beautifully produced BBC documentary linked below outlines the amazingly unique conditions here on Earth that allowed intelligent life to evolve from a materialist point of view. This special set of conditions that facilitated life on our planet makes it appear less likely to scientists that nearby stars could have provided similar conditions for advanced intelligent beings to evolve. The Rare Earth hypothesis is based on the following observations:

Our galaxy is teeming with planets. Red dwarf stars are the most numerous ones. These stars, however, put out much less heat than our larger Sun (yellow dwarf star). In order to be in the so-called Goldilocks Zone (where water is a liquid), planets of red dwarf star systems would have to be much closer to their stars. At such proximity, astronomers tell us that the common solar flares associated with red dwarfs would expose planets in the habitable zone to damaging radiation. In addition, red dwarfs don't create the massive magnetic fields required to shield planets from destructive cosmic gamma rays.

Then there is the unique origin of Earth that is now understood to have occurred when two smaller planets collided to form our world early in the history of the solar system. This extra mass allowed our planet to have a larger and longer lasting rotating molten iron core that creates a protective magnetic shield against cosmic and solar radiation. Mars is thought to have once had a molten core, but it presumably burned out long ago losing its life protecting magnetic shield. Without the extra mass that Earth has and a more enduring molten core, Mars lost its atmosphere long ago and therefore became inhospitable for life. The collision of two smaller planets in the “Goldilocks Zone, protecting Earth from life destroying radiation is viewed as a rare event and one not likely to have occurred in many close star systems.

Most importantly, the early collision that produced Earth also created our moon which is large enough to stabilize the Earth’s rotation at a set inclination. This allows stable seasons. With climatic stability large animals were able to evolve on land with adequate food resources. These large animals led to humans being able to evolve with the massive brain required for higher intelligence.

Finally, the existence of a giant world, Jupiter, far from the Sun provided an effective barrier to incoming comets. The powerful gravity of Jupiter attracts comets and draws them away from our planet. This has prevented a continuous bombardment of Earth’s surface by comets coming from the outer regions of the solar system. In many star systems studied by astronomers, gas giants exist very close to their stars. Thus, they cannot shield planets like ours that orbit further out from their stars.

Despite the proposition that a unique set of conditions on Earth makes the evolution of life less likely from the materialist perspective, The ET hypothesis for UFOs could still be valid if advanced technology existed to bend spacetime (warp drive a la “Star Trek.”) With faster than light speed other “Rare Earths” might evolve to have intelligent life that could create the necessary technological advancements to traverse vast distances and arrive here.

In addition, UFOs might not be travelling through interstellar space to get to Earth but could conceivably arrive via traversing dimensions from parallel universes. Thus, the ET hypothesis might not be valid, but an “interdimensional” one would allow flying saucers and their crews to show up in our skies and interact with us.
Most importantly, if consciousness is primary, then we can reasonably speculate that UFO intelligences might have access to non-material realms and that they may enter our material universe as “visitors.” If their origin is not from our material plane of existence, then many of their capabilities could become understandable. I refer here to flying saucers being able to dematerialize, often described as “winking out.” Furthermore, the seemingly “miraculous” cures described by UFO contact experiencers might be understood as part and parcel of flying saucer intelligences’ ability to manipulate spacetime via consciousness based non-material technologies.
In conclusion, both the “Rare Earth” thesis and this documentary of the same name are extremely limited by dealing with these issues only from a materialist/physicalist perspective. For physicalists, the natural world is essentially “objective” where randomness is a main force in determining events that could lead to the development of intelligent life. If consciousness is primary, as a growing number of contact experiencers and even some scientists are beginning to acknowledge, then the universe is not random. Synchronicities associated with contact are being driven by a higher order of intelligence, and the universe is conscious, meaning alive and awake. Thus, intelligent life throughout the Cosmos is being created by non-material forces that choose life. In the process, those spiritual forces are fulfilling a plan that compels us to realize that we truly are "one with the one that is all."

Addendum: A critic of this posting have commented that it serves no purpose to discuss the “Rare Earth” theory because it is formulated to “steer you away from the truth.” Another wrote “why even go there, you know better!” My reply is that contact/disclosure activists have a responsibility to challenge the theories of materialist/physicalist scientists and engage in public discussions whenever possible. As researcher Grant Cameron has pointed out, the US Executive Branch has carried out a program of gradual acclimatization on the flying saucer subject for decades. This has existed alongside a de facto policy of ridicule and denial.

With Senator Schumer’s proposed amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, with many observers believe most certainly has the Whitehouse’s approval, a confirmation/disclosure plan might be slowly going into second gear. As more information confirms the reality and importance of what are now called UAP, contact experiencers and their supporters will be allowed to share the stories of our encounters with the public This will include those who have been influenced by materialist scientists who will persist in promoting the rare Earth theory.

2024.05.14 17:22 Contactunderground The Concept of “Rare Earth” is a materialist scientific challenge to the ET hypothesis for flying saucers.

2024.05.14 17:19 Contactunderground This beautifully produced BBC documentary linked below outlines the amazingly unique conditions here on Earth that allowed intelligent life to evolve from a materialist point of view.

2024.05.14 17:18 TheBestLotad Am I just anxious, or was I a fool to begin with?

Hi Reddit, I'm new, and my best friend uses Reddit so I hope they don't come to this sub. I only know about it because I listen to RSlash.
I (NB 25) love my best friend (NB 29) in a "more than friends" way.
I'll be honest, I'm terrible when it comes to relationships. I get clingy, lose myself in the relationship, always feel the need to "prove" my love; essentially I am an easy target for bad people. Because of this I haven't been in a relationship for 6 years, it helps that I'm asexual (sex repulsed), but I still have the desire for romantic love.
Me and my friend met online about 2 years ago and we instantly clicked. At the time I was still weary about getting into a relationship, as I wasn't confident that I wouldn't slip into those unhealthy habits. Funny enough, that was also around the time my therapist cancelled my therapy appointment without telling me and ghosted me. I'm guessing I didn't appear mentally ill enough? I don't know. And no she was fine, she just went on a vacation.
Anyways, me and my friend talked a lot, and clearly our talks were more than platonic. But hey maybe I'm wrong and it's normal for people to call their best friends by pet names, say I love you over and over again, and send love letters in the mail about how much you love them and want them in your life. They used to be so loving, and I felt so secure in what we were.
Then Christmas happened, and it hasn't been the same since. They got asked out on a date by a work colleague and accepted it, which shattered my heart. I told them that if they pursued the relationship, that I wouldn't feel comfortable being as loving as we were and that we would have to talk as regular friends do. I asked them what we were and if they loved me the way I love them. It hurt when they said that they weren't sure.
They cancelled the date with the other person, but I don't think I've recovered from that day. Even though from it we decided that we would plan on living together once we were at stable places in our careers (we were both having issues with our jobs).
One time I got super drunk with their friend, and the friend said my best friend loved me and wanted to kiss me but just would never admit it, which felt good to hear. I've heard from their friends that they know they love me and that I've been a force of good in their life, one asked me to please stay because I make them happy. Essentially all their friends have been saying that my friend loves me but just doesn't know it.
Meanwhile my friends, who aren't online all that much so haven't seen how me and my friend interact, have been wanting to set me up. One was trying to set up a double date between her bf, and then me and her friend. When I told my friend about it, they were obviously hurt and got quiet for the night, being sheepish to tell me that I should do what I want to do.
I didn't want to, I still wanted to be with my friend, even though we weren't "together" together. That was a few months, and the last time it's happened.
So why am I here? Shouldn't it be obvious that we have feelings for each other?
These past few months they've slowly been showing their affection less and it's been bothering me.
They get off work and I ask them how their day went, and they'll say they're tired and going to bed, then do exactly that. They won't ask about my day, and that will be our only interaction for the day. At one point this was happening every single day.
They no longer say all those kind words that made me fall for them in the beginning, about how I make their life worth living. They've stopped calling me all those pet names that made me feel special, they rarely even say "I love you" first.
I spoke with them, about how I miss these pet names, that I miss being told that I matter to them. I tell them that these are my love language and that I don't feel loved, and all they say is that they're sorry and they don't know how to make me feel loved. I JUST TOLD YOU HOW!
They used to plan on coming to visit me once they get the money, but when they do get the money they visit family instead. I understand that family comes first, but it still hurts to know that they basically lied to me.
I'm reaching my breaking point, I'm tired of playing this game of "will we, won't we". But at the same time I'm afraid that I might be over reacting, and I don't want to leave them alone if they do really want something. Plus it's really hard finding a partner when you're sex repulsed.
So should I just move on? I haven't told them that I'm ready to break off what little we have, but other than that I have been VERY up front with my emotions as I have them.
TL;DR: I'm anxious and tired after playing around with someone with commitment issues after 2 years.
