44, mostly retail management work experience. I've struggled my entire working life to stand out and get ahead. I went to college when I was younger, and discovered my diploma in computer science was unremarkable and couldn't land a job. Went to tradex school later on and had the same experience. I tried for years to get an apprenticeship or helperr job in my large Canadian city and discovered that for every job there are hundreds of applications that are more qualified than I am.
I've worked retail because it's the only industry that I could get hired in. Even within the industry with 20 years' experience, I struggle to find a job other than my current one. Every job I apply to has hundreds of applicants that are better qualified. I've made an effort in the past few years to apply to just about anything I'd be qualified for regardless of pay. This includes labour jobs and part-time work. I got one interview in two years.
My direct manager changes every year or two and I'm quickly forgotten, no matter how well I perform. I know I could be let go and replaced at any time. I have no network or references to tap into.
How do you stand out when every job has hundreds of applicants? How do I get my foot in the door? I've spent my entire working life settling for whoever would hire me. I've never had the luxury of turning a job down.

I've been wanting to jump ship from Chrome to Firefox for ages but my school uses Google Classroom and the Google Educational Suite for everything. No joke, we have Office and Adobe accounts, but those can only be used on school desktops (which means they're limited to specific design and coding classes). I guess it saves money?
Anyway, the last time I tried Firefox wouldn't let me access any Google programs citing a privacy error (I mean, are they wrong?). It could be my school's Wifi blocking Firefox usage but I doubt it. And I'm worried in general that it might be clunky in that regard.
Does anyone have any tips here as to how to make it work? Or any other advice regarding using these programs through Firefox? This is just a temporary thing until I graduate in less than a year.

Prologue

Hello and welcome to my post. I will subdivide this into two large parts. One will cover my thoughts, feelings, my hopes and dreams...While the other will tell you the specifics of how I pass the time, what topics interest me, what passions do I posses. I believe that at the end of this leap into my inner world, you dear reader, will have all the necessary information to judge whether we are compatible or not.

Part I
I am writing this in the hopes of finding something that I lack. Lately I have had this feeling, this tinge of melancholy within the dephts of my being, this yearning to find a kindred spirit, another Soul, much like mine, to form a bond with. Perhaps Loneliness is the right word for what is bothering me, but to use it seems to carry with it a connotation of ungratefulness. Ungratefulness for the people that I do have in my life, although none of them, of course, have the connection to me that I seek here.

I have found it increasingly necessary to seek in this Life a sort of purity of thought. What I mean is, I have began to undestand what ideas and concepts are ultimately compatible with my inner most Self, ergo what guidelines I have to follow to feel the most whole. Naturally I have likewise realised what I cannot add to my Self and what I will henceforth reject with all the power that I posses.

With this new context in mind, I now follow on the path of self improvement. I will now begin to mold my Self into my perfected idea of how the Self should be. This is certainly a significant undertaking, one that will not be easy to follow through on but one that I ultimately have to do. To me such context is essential. It is akin to a Guiding Star shining in the night. I will follow this Star for without it I am lost in the vast Darkness.

Looking back at my life, it was suboptimal, especially if one compares the way it molded me to how I will now mold myself. I suppose I must look on with a hint of regret at all that time which one might consider to be lost. Still... I try to stave off such decisively negative interpretations, after all, I have ultimately came to these conclusions. That means that somewhere along the line I had to have picked up on enough of such ideas for them to become so cemented in my consciousness. Well, either that or I was always like this, but in that case I can at least thank my life up to this point for not being able to supress such manifestations of my inner most Self.

To add to the topic of my life, I must admit that not all the battles have yet been won, not all the Demons vanquished, not every Mountain climbed. I want you to keep such things in mind when deciding whether or not to approach me. Many will shy away, I undestand that much, but the pursuit of true Companionship is just another such battle. Having said all that I do believe that being able to overcome hurdles together carries with it a certain appeal. That is to say, what's the fun in joining once the Game is already over?

I don't shy away from such challenges, perhaps to a fault. Certain troubles that I faced in the past carry with them a long shadow over my current health and well being. Still, I intend to change little in this regard other than the proficiency with which I will clash the current of my Will against the cliffs of Life.
Part II
In this part of my post I will tell you about my interests and hobbies, I will try to be thorough, commonality in this regard is rather important to build a relationship
History. I have had an interest in history for almost a decade now, it started back in school and developed from there. Well, now that I think about it one could argue that it started even earlier in my life as I liked watching the odd historic documentary or film aired on television but it wasn't regular back then, I never actively sought it out. I am mostly interested in European history in the period between the 18th-20th century but I sometimes branch out to other time periods and other parts of the world. I watch various channels related to history and read articles and sometimes books. I have recently got a few books on the German revolution of 1848/1849 and a historical magazine on the Thirty Years' War. Besides that I try to visit museums sometimes.
Literature. Especially old novels. I like to immerse myself in the Worlds of these books, I tend to read them while listening to thematically fitting music and take my time with them. One time you are following a troubled Youth in his quest for spiritual understanding of the world, another you see the aged and decrepit Doctor gambling his very Soul on the promises of abtaining satisfaction in earthy pleasures, then again your olfaction notices the most pleasant scent known to man even as the one eminating it has the appearance of a revolting Frog. These and many other stories open up to you once you decide to set foot into the literary World.
Languages. I know three, with one being a bit rusty. I am currently working intently on strengthening it. I believe that if I continue to apply myself in this regard then I should be able to finally conquer it. What language am I working on? Well, if you were to stack all the major works in it they would be as tall as a house... It is fun to go through different works in multiple languages, the same goes for film, games and such.
Games. I recently played Cyberpunk 2077. Well as recently as I played any major story centric game. Now that the dust has settled and the bugs mostly removed...It's not that bad. The main questline at least. Besides that I tried Fallout 76 (Very average, I'm dissapointed with what they made the "RPG" system) and I might give Deus Ex Manking Divided another spin (since it's somewhat similar to Cyberpunk when it comes to its aesthetics). Dark Souls is one of my favorite series, I still haven't beaten Elden Ring though. When it came out I wasn't in the right mindset to invest a hundred hours into it, with all those bosses and difficult locations. I think I'll only consider playing it if I am streaming it to someone. I am generally interested in either streaming games or having the person I am talking to stream them to me. To be specific I mean streaming to a single person while being on call. Besides that I'm a big fan of Paradox strategy games, especially Europa Universalis IV and Heats of Iron IV, I tend to only play single player since I find multiplayer with many people to be rather stressful but on the other hand I have nothing against a co-op game. I'm not the best player though, despite the ammount of hours I have in them. Another great game I would mention would be Dragon's Dogma. A very underrated RPG. I recently beat it again and it was an atmospheric and interesting experience. It is one of those games that feel like they have an endless ammount of depth and constant new secrets to discover.
Anime and Manga. In recent times my interest in them has waned but I still watch the occasional series here and there. Like Cyberpunk Edgerunners (Which I found to be rather mediocre) and the very good first season from the new arc of Bleach. Some of my favourite series include: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Death Note, Fate;Zero, Psycho Pass, Code Geass and Attack on Titan. I wouldn't mind if you were to introduce me to some new series, maybe based on the ones I mentioned. My favourite Manga is Berserk which I still follow, althought I am still not certain on the direction that the new author is taking. I suppose it really is a matter of contention whether a somewhat (or considerably warped) vision is better than an unfinished work. One could argue that a few novels remain unfinished and possess a macabre appeal to them as such.
Music. Classical music has a very special place in my heart. A few of my favourite pieces would be: Clair de Lune, Nocturne Op. 9 No.2, Devil's Trill Sonata, Danse Macabre, Valse Sentimentale, Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92: II. Alegreto (by Beethoven) and Suite from Swan Lake, Op. 20a: I. Scene. Moderato. There are more but these ones always invoke something in me when I listen to them. Besides Classical I also enjoy listening to Synthwave, old Western pop and J-pop, both modern and from the 20th century.
Esotericism. I am interested in things spiritual, mystical, magical and esoteric. I have read religios texts, magical grimoires, introductions to various schools of thought. It is interesting to me.
Epilogue
Hopefully I was able to cast the spotlight upon my inner World in a clear and unequivocal manner. I feel the need to add to the aforementioned that I am rather introverted, which means that I tend to dislike large social gatherings. I managed to condition myself to be able to endure the presense of large groups of people but it isn't something that I would seek out in most cases. Besides that I am neurodivergent and suffer from certain issues with mental health. I have to take medication to keep myself under control. They work well enough but certain days are harder than others. I respect the struggle that others have with mental health but in the context of a relationship I have my limits, no one with BDP for instance. I am also not looking for anything casual. I understand than one cannot demand depth and meaning from a conversation with an absolute stranger, that is akin to trying to build a sand castle right before the waves strike but I ask at least that you enter with a mindset that this might become something of significance. I also do want to say that I am completely Monogamous. My preference? The sickly, pale, intellectual who watches rain droplets slide down the window in Autumn. Lastly, if I enjoy the company of a person I tend to not want to let them go.

I (25F) grew up with not much, raised by migrated grandparents. Lots of financial hardship but grateful to have lived in quiet neighborhoods with good public schools. Even our public housing is nice and I don't feel unsafe walking around because most people mind their business.
Being raised in a migrated household, I was fluent in another language. Here there is a high demand for people who speak my language and also a need for people of my ethnic background to be in a lot of career fields. Some fields I was interested in was nutrition and psychology. I saw the stigma of mental health and the need for educating my people about food & how helpful it is to eat right.
I have an eye condition in one eye so it limits me from things like nursing because they're so fast-paced. I can't (legally) drive either. I could be a rad tech but it's very competitive. Nutrition seemed perfect but they don't pay well until you become an RD which people say is not worth the time and money they sacrificed.
I have two more fields I would be happy to go into and it's accounting or learning software. I've done some coding practice recently. My interest came when I learned how to use a program in 8th grade to make a simple game where I make a ball bounce. Difficult career but I would still be up to learn even if it's really hard. I'm also motivated watching my older cousin make it in the field & he grew up like me.
On one hand, I might regret not helping people as I helped them all my life. On the other hand, I might also regret not making enough to be comfortable.

I'm trying to make the spiritual successor to Xwing for 90s DOS everyone craved, but Lucas Arts never delivered. I was also inspired by Wing Commander Privateer who's title led me to imagining building a giant fleet by buying more and more ships and making friends.
It has a bunch of bugs but these will be fixed in a week or two. It's still pretty fun and a base by which a HUGE HUGE potential WOW killer will be made on. fairly long patch notes of a subset of what I plan on doing in the future are at the bottom.

I'm exhausted... I spent close to a year on this patch... And the last 3 months was nothing but sleep, code, sleep, code, body necessities, balanced against being stress sick, normal sick, and trying not to break down due to being isolated non stop working... About 2000 hours in this patch alone, on top of 10,000 hours in the past 6 years before that, and I use an anthology of game resources that took me 20,000 hours to make. There's some bugs due to Unity compiling standalone improper from editor, but they'll be fixed, as well as the story line not in... RTTG will give you the feel of a classic orthogonic chess like game with cover, vision and such, yet everyone plays at the same time. RTTG mode happens when you enter populated towns, not because the server can't handle infinite players in a small zone, but because it feels more intense when any action and fight can start from the shadows. Movement is freer and faster when no one has fights going on nearby.

Afterthoughts

Small haul for a small bonus today. I put together that part of the haul last night, and once I saw the $5 / 10 bonus, I completely forgot to check every other app, haha. Technically a slight profit loss meeting my IB bonus today, but that's okay because I'm making progress towards my bigger bonus. If I were to prorate that bonus, that'd be an extra $4.52, so it's definitely worth it.

Here's an idea: Mix up a white cheddar Mac a Roni, with your choice of ham, sausage, chicken, pork, or one of the vegan meat alternatives. Add a little soy sauce, and some green peas if you wish. 2024.05.13 22:21 jwrado I hate my MSP job and want to quit

Apologies for the length.
I'm in my 40s and have already had a successful culinary career. My last head chef job was an early covid casualty so I took a couple of years off to be a stay at home dad. Realized the next step to "advance" in my field would have been restaurant ownership and, that was the absolute last thing I wanted to do after 20+ years in the industry. Long story short, I was able to talk my way into a technician role at an MSP with no degree, certs, or experience.
I caught on very quickly and have learned a ton since I've been there. Started honing my interests and tightening my focus, and realized that the direction I really want to go is software engineering or maybe the application side of cybersecurity. The bosses and clients like me, and I get regular praise for my work and having learned so much so quickly.
The thing is, after a little over a year, I'm starting to dread coming to work every day. Some of the problem solving aspects are enjoyable and stimulating but most of the actually work and dealing with end-users is miserable. I'm in a tier 1 role that bleeds into tier 2 but most of what I do is hardware repairs, troubleshooting network and server issues, and a lot of PW resets. I've gotten into a little bit of Azure and AD, as well as firewall management which is a little bit better. At the end of the day, though, I hate answering the phone in the middle of working on other issues, being on-site and getting pulled in a million different directions, etc. I hate having to work in a million different ecosystems and rarely having the opportunity to take a deep dive into any one of them. And, if I'm being completely honest, I find networking mostly dull and uninteresting. Really, the whole job (and the company in general) feels spread so wide and thin. I'm not going to badmouth the company but, there seems to be a lot of general organizational management issues as well.
The summation of all of this is that I know for sure that this is not the side of tech in which I want to make my second career. I'm currently have about a 1.5 years left on my SWE degree and have been really tempted to get back into a kitchen while I finish studying. I know I could make a phone call today and go to work cooking tomorrow. It would be so easy to go get some mindless prep job where I can pop my in headphones and listen to Udemy courses, etc. - making as much or more as I am now. I feel like I'm sort of spinning my wheels at work while I go to school. Part of it would be a financial decision but, I also feel like I'm spending a lot of energy learning things that don't jive with my career path. Don't get me wrong, I love to learn about everything I can but when I have limited time (kids, school, house, etc), I'd much rather be honing coding skills or something similar.
My concern is what potential employers will think of my resume when they see that I bounced back into my old field after a year in IT. The work that I'm doing now is so far from my career goals, does it actually matter? I'm not trying to be a sysadmin or network engineer. How bad of a look is it to go back to cooking while I finish school?

Greetings fine humans. I’m here today writing a “Day in a Life” blog post because someone asked me to. I cannot imagine this is interesting, but Redditors tend to surprise me so let’s do this.
Morning Routine
Like many of us, mornings are when I take care of all the dependent lifeforms under my command. Get in an hour or so of video games (Unicorn Overlord currently) for my mental health. Feed the coterie of beasts (including the children), make coffee for the wife and me, prep the kids for school. Catch up on Colbert (my news needs comedy otherwise darkness consumes), check out what’s been happening on Medium and Reddit, and read a few of my favorite cybersecurity / engineering mail lists. Crack open the ol’ calendar and see what my ratio of “get shit done” to “help other people get shit done” is in store for my day. All roughly before 8am. And the beauty of working for a Bay Area company (if we can call it that, we’re so remote friendly) is that I normally have a precious few hours before people in SF wake up to get things done.
Daily Tasks
Each morning has a brief reflection of what I need to get done that day. I’m a big fan of the Eisenhower Method to figure out what I actually need to prioritize in my day. It’s exceedingly rare that I get a majority of my day focused on work that I’ve initiated, so prioritizing activities from code review and pull request feedback to architectural systems design reviews to pair programming requests from the team to random break/fix fires that pop up, all of that gets organized so I feel like I’m (at least trying) to do the most impactful work for the day. Reddit has a few systems to help drive queues of work: Jira for planned work and “big rock” items that we’re trying to accomplish for that quarter, Harold (an in-house developed shame mechanism) for code review and deployment, and Launch Control (Reddit’s flavor of Google’s LaunchCal) for architecture design reviews. Plenty of potential dopamine hits as “things to get done.”
Meetings
It’s exceedingly rare that I have meetings that could have been an email (and if I do, they’re almost always vendor meetings). A lot of what my meetings tend to focus on are around conflict resolutions across teams as we try to achieve different goals or drive consensus to resolve problems that come up on various programs teams are trying to deliver. Working on Security, you can often get perceived as the “Department of No”, but in every meeting I work hard to make sure that isn’t the case. It starts with getting a shared context of what is the problem at hand, understanding the outcomes that we need to drive toward and inputs into the problem (timelines, humans, trade offs), and deciding how we move forward. Meetings are a terrible way to convey decisions as they are only as good as the individuals that remember them, so lots of these meetings are centered around decision docs or technical design reviews. Capturing your rationale for a decision not only helps make sure you understand the problem (if you can’t write about it, it’s hard to think about it), but also helps capture the whys and rationale behind those decisions for future you and other product and engineering staff.
There’s also meetings that I live for, those that are building up humans. We have biweekly SPACE (Security, Privacy, and Compliance Engineering) brown bags where we talk about new things we’ve shipped or some training topic that upskills all of us. We have biweekly threat modeling meetings where we pick a topic/scenario and go through a threat modeling exercise live, which helps build the muscle memory of how to do technical diagramming, and helps build a shared context of how the system works, what our risk appetite is, and how various team members think about the problem providing multiple viewpoints to the discussion (honestly the most valuable component). As a Principal Engineer, I’m keenly aware of my humanity and the fact that I do not scale in my efforts alone: training and building up future PEs is how I scale myself (at least until cloning becomes more readily available).
Ubiquity
One of my super powers is being everything everywhere all at once, or so I’ve been told by my fellow Snoos. I’ve been told that I have an uncanny knack to be in so many Slack channels and part of so many threads of discussion that it’s “inhuman”. Being a damn fine security engineer is hard because not only do you have to have the understanding and context of the thing you’re trying to secure, but also know how to actually secure the thing. This is nigh impossible if you don’t know what’s going on in your business (and we’re still “small enough” size-wise that this is still possible for one human), so I’ve got Slack keyword alerts, channel organization, and a giant 49” ultrawide monitor that has a dedicated Slack tiled window to keep me plugged in and accessible. I also have developed over many years my response to pings from Slack: “Can I solve this problem, if not who can? Is this something I should solve or can I delegate? Can this be answered async with good quality, or is a larger block of dedicated time required to solve? Is this thread too long and needs a different approach?” This workflow is second nature to me and helps me move around the org. I’ve also been here almost 5 years and, as I’m in Security and have to know everything about everything to secure anything (which I don’t, but I am a master of Googling, learning, and listening), I’ve been exposed to pretty much everything in our engineering sphere. With that knowledge comes great power of helping connect teams together that wouldn’t have connected otherwise.
Do Security Stuffs
Occasionally I actually get to do “security” things. These past two quarters it’s been launching Reddit’s “unified access control” solution leveraging Cloudflare Zero Trust, moving us off old crusty Nginx OAuth proxies onto a modern system that has such groundbreaking things like caching and logs , among other things. But really, it’s the planning, designing, and execution of a complex technical migration with only a handful of engineers. I oversee security across the entire business so that requires opining on web app security, k8s / AWS / GCP security, IAM concepts, observability, mobile app dev, CI/CD security, and all the design patterns that are included in this smörgåsbord of technology. Keeping all this in my head is why I can’t remember names and faces and my wife has to tell me multiple times where I’m supposed to be and when. But the thing that keeps me going is always the “building”, seeing things get stood up at Reddit that I know are sound and secure. It’s not denying people’s requests or crapping all over a developer for picking a design they didn’t know had a serious security design flaw. We’re not a bank (either in terms of money we get to throw at security, or tolerance for security friction), we get to make risk tradeoff decisions based on Reddit’s risk tolerance (which is high except where it comes to privacy or financial exchanges) and listen to our business as we try to find ways to improve ads serving and improve our users’ experience. So I view myself like any other software engineer, I just happen to know a lot about security. And I guess not just security, I know a lot about our safety systems, our networking environment, and our Kubernetes architecture. It just comes with the Security space, that inquisitive mind of “how does this thing work?” and wanting to be competent when you talk about it and try to secure it.
Not everything is 0s and 1s, however. A lot of security is process, paperwork, and persistence. Designing workflow approval processes for how an IAM flow should look like. Reviewing IT corporate policies for accuracy and applicability. Crafting responses to potential advertisers’ IT teams on “how secure is Reddit, really”. Writing documentation for how an engineering system works and how other engineers should interact with it. Updating runbooks with steps on how others should respond to an incident or page. Building Grafana dashboards to quantify and visualize how a tooling rollout is working. Providing consulting on product features like authentication / authorization business logic across services. Interviewing, not only for my own team but also within other engineering and cross-functional areas of the business.
End of Day Routine
Eventually, I run out of time in the day as I’m beckoned away from my dark, cave-like, Diet Coke strewn office by the promise of dinner. Wrapping up document review, (hopefully) crossing things off my to-do list, and closing out Slack threads for the day, I try to pack everything up and not carry it with me after work. It’s challenging being an almost completely remote company with a heavy presence in the West Coast, as pings and notifications come in as dinner and kids’ bedtime happens. But I know not everything can be finished in a day, some things will slip, and there will always be more work tomorrow. Which is juxtaposed occasionally with bouts of imposter syndrome, even for someone as senior and tenured as I am. Happens to all of us.
After-hours work is restricted to on-call duty and pet projects. You don’t want to know how many on-call queues I’m secondary escalation on. Or how many Single Point of Securimancers services that I still own (looking at you, Reddit onion service). And pet projects are typically things that I’ve got desires to do: prototyping security solutions we want to look into, messing with my k8s homelab, doing routine upgrades. Nothing clears the mind like watching semver numbers go up (until you find the undocumented change that breaks everything).
Future Outlook
And finally, what's on the horizon for our little SPACE team? We’re still a small team coming out of IPO, and our greatest super power is networking and influencing our engineering peers. We got our ISO 27001 and SOC2 Type 2 last year and continue to ever increase scope and complexity of public accreditation. We’re close partners with our Infrastructure and IT teams to modernize our tech and continue to evolve our capabilities in host and network security, data loss prevention, and security observability. We’ve got two wonderful interns from YearUp that started and are going to be with us this summer, and we continue to focus on improving our team composition (more women and diversity, more junior folks and less singleton seniors). All of this work takes effort by this PE.

So far sales had been steady but not spectacular. Jenna hoped they would pick up after the school let out. She chatted and sampled with customers, pitching her spiel about supporting their troop's efforts to earn badges. It was fun work even if tiring on her feet.
Gazing up at the cloudless sky, Jenna wondered idly if it might rain later. The forecast hadn't mentioned anything, but you never knew. A tiny speck in the distance caught her eye. She squinted, trying to make it out. It grew rapidly in size—and shape. Whatever it was, it wasn't a bird.
"Hey Jamie, do you see that?" Jenna nudged her friend, pointing. Now the other girls had turned to look as well. What had been a speck was now clearly some large, cylindrical object descending from the heavens. It shone silvery-grey in the sunlight.
"Is that...a rocket ship?" breathed Tammy.
As it neared the treetops, its design became evident. Definitely not any spacecraft Jenna had seen on the news or in movies. It was smoothly rounded on all ends, with no visible engines or fins. Eerily silent, it drifted toward an open field and settled softly on four tapering legs.
The girls stared open-mouthed, cookies momentarily forgotten. A hatch appeared in the side of the ship. Light spilled out, glowing an ethereal blue. Then towering figures emerged, moving with an inhuman grace.
Jenna caught her breath. Peering closer, she could just make out bipedal forms wrapped in loose, silvery garments. Their limbs seemed overly long and jointed in odd places. As they turned in her direction, two dark eyes set wide in hairless faces met hers. No nose or mouth was visible beneath.
"Aliens," Jamie whispered. "Actual aliens. I don't believe it."
Tammy squeaked and clung to Jenna's arm. But Jenna's mind was racing. This was an incredible opportunity, too good to pass up. She flashed the others a mischievous smile. "Come on, girls. Let's go make some sales!"
The troop fell into step behind her as she marched into the field. The creatures had paused, gazing around at their surroundings with a palpable air of curiosity and caution. As Jenna neared, they angled their expressive eyes down at the little band approaching. Up close, their skin shimmered in shades of aqua and moss green, veined with silvery networks.
The tallest one shifted its gaze between the girls, as if taking their measure. It spoke, but the sound was like rushing wind and dripping water blended into an eerie melody. Its friends chattered in response, their voices blending into a dissonant choir.
Undeterred, Jenna beamed and proudly presented her box of Thin Mints. "Cookies!" she enunciated clearly. "Would you like to buy some cookies?" To her astonishment, a glowing rectangle like a computer screen lit up on the tall one's torso. Words scrolled across it in crisp English letters.
WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND. WHAT ARE COOKIES? IT SEEMS YOU ARE SELLING SOMETHING, BUT WE HAVE NO CURRENCY OF YOUR WORLD.
Jamie leaned in to whisper, eyes shining, "They can understand us! This is so cool."
Jenna gathered her thoughts, focusing on her sales pitch despite everything unusual about the situation. "Cookies are a sweet treat made of chocolate and biscuits. They're very popular here on Earth. And all the money we earn from selling them goes towards fun trips and learning new skills as Girl Scouts. Please, won't you buy a box to help support our troop? I'm sure you'll love them!"
The aliens conferred amongst themselves, still in untranslatablespeech. Finally, the glowing display lit up again. I APOLOGIZE, BUT WE HAVE NO MEANS OF TRANSACTION. WE ARE EXPLORERS HERE IN PEACE TO STUDY YOUR WORLD. PERHAPS ANOTHER TIME WE CAN BARTER. FOR NOW, WE ONLY WISH TO LEARN.
Jenna tried to hide her disappointment. This wasn't how she'd envisioned the interaction going at all. But she had come this far, so she wasn't giving up yet. An idea bloomed in her mind. "Well, since you want to learn about us, how about a trade? We'll give you a box of cookies to try in exchange for letting our whole troop come aboard your ship for a little while. What do you say?"
The girls held their breath. This was assuredly against every safety rule. But an opportunity for an out of this world experience was too enticing to pass up. The aliens conversed quietly before responding.

The tallest alien leaned down, its large dark eyes fixing on the box in Jenna's hands. A long, nimble finger reached out to poke gently at the box, then drew back just as swiftly. Its companions murmured again in their strange tongue.
Frustrated not being able to communicate properly, Jenna popped open the lid so the sweet scent could waft up. She took one mint and mimed taking a bite, sighing happily and rubbing her belly. The aliens copied the sign for stomach, looking quizzical.
An idea sparked in Jenna's mind. Rummaging in her bag, she pulled out her phone and found the notepad app. Typing awkwardly with her thumbs, she showed them the words "Will you trade for this?" Arrows pointed to the cookies and to their ship.

Inside, the walls glowed with an otherworldly luminescence. Strange symbols and interfaces winked all around, totally indecipherable. The floors felt bouncy underfoot, as if made of gelatin.
"Wow," breathed Jamie. "It's so beautiful in here."
The aliens guided them through sleek corridors and compartments full of glowing tech. They pointed out living quarters, a laboratory, hydroponic gardens, and an observation deck showing the curve of the Earth.
In the cockpit, countless viewscreens displayed alien constellations and scans of their small town below. Control panels rippled like liquid mercury beneath touch.
"This is where we navigated our journey to your solar system," explained their guides. "Truly a marvel, the distances stars can be bridged.
Tammy peered out the main viewing portal. "Your ship is so fast! How did you get here from wherever you came from?"
As the explorers launched into an explanation involving hyperdrives and folded spacetime, Jenna began to lose the thread. Space travel clearly worked very differently where these beings hailed from.
Their tour lasted nearly an hour, the aliens answering every barrage of questions patiently. All too soon, it was over, and they found themselves back outside in the late afternoon sun

The aliens turned as one and glided back up the gangway. The rockets flared, rising gracefully into the sky until they vanished into the dusk.

Hi everyone,
I’m in a really tough spot and could really use some advice and support.
My girlfriend and I were together for two years, and during that time, I’ve experienced some of the highest highs and the lowest lows. I’m struggling to move on, and I need your help to find a way forward.
Background:
We both used to work from home and share the same job. Throughout our relationship, I went out of my way to help her, especially since she was also attending school and used me to finish her schooling as well as be able to work.
I’d spend hours each day assisting her with her work. I'd spend hours each day trying to help her not only on work related stuff but also her emotional state as she was depressed and a very anxious person.
Despite my efforts, our relationship was fraught with issues, largely due to her dismissive avoidant attachment style and my constant attempts to fix our relationship.
I would say that most likely, she is a covert narcissist or at least, she has narcissistic traits.
The Issues:

Lies and Deceit: Early on, I discovered she was talking to a guy from another country, referring to him as "hubby," while he called her "my wife." They exchanged messages like "I miss you xxx" and "can't wait till we are together." She lied about visiting her grandmother in another country when she was actually planning to visit him. When confronted, she claimed it was just how she spoke to friends, but it shattered my trust.
Secretive Behavior: She never wanted to post about our relationship on social media, despite having pictures with other male friends. She was always secretive and evasive, deleting messages and hiding her phone. She very rarely opened to me about her past.
Emotional Unavailability: She was emotionally distant and cold, rarely reciprocating the love and support I gave her. Our physical intimacy dwindled, and she frequently cancelled plans, claiming she was too tired or needed rest. She was acknowledging the fact that she is a cold person and is not in need of a serious relationship.
Manipulation and Gaslighting: She often used silent treatment and ghosting as tools of manipulation. She gaslighted me, making me question my reality and feel confused during arguments. Despite claiming she loved me, her actions often said otherwise.
Emotional Dependence: I became emotionally dependent on her, always trying to fix things and make her happy. I tolerated her behaviors and sacrificed my own well-being for the sake of our relationship.
Job and Ghosting: When she had to leave work due to an issue with her hands (her doctor said that she has sensitive hands and she needs to stop typing on the computer), she completely ghosted me. I tried reaching out to her many times, sending messages expressing how much I needed her, but she withdrew and ignored me. We were working on a graveyard shift from 11pm to 7am because she had to finish school and I couldn't take it anymore. She was telling me that we need to be patient until she finishes school. After our break up, I spent months rebuilding my life and confidence, only for her to reappear when she needed emotional support.
My struggle after our breakup: I met several women after our breakup and she was lingering on my mind (I was limerent and still am) and the relationships with the women usually ended from my end.
Inconsistent Contact: After she ghosted me and after our breakup, she reappeared after 6 months or so, needing emotional support. I stood by her, despite wanting a relationship she couldn't offer. We met up, had casual sex, and she remained on my mind constantly. It was obvious she was using me for emotional support and validation but my emotions were getting the better of me. She also told me she is in a "situationship" with someone, being secretive about this which adds to the pain. She would ghost me again, leaving me shattered each time.

The Breaking Point:
One of the most painful moments was when I found out about her plans to visit another man. She lied about the destination, and their messages were clearly romantic. Despite confronting her multiple times and even asking her to send a message to him confirming she was in a relationship, she refused, citing excuses like embarrassment toward her friend or wanting to take her time until she sents me a message.
The End:
I finally ended the relationship, but the pain didn’t stop. She has ghosted me again, and I’m left feeling hurt and betrayed. We did not talk for a month or so and I called her to she if she is okay. She answered the phone and asked me to call her more often. So I did. I called her two days later as she doesn't like communicating everyday and she told me that she'll call me in a bit. It's been 14 days. I reached out to her recently to see if she was okay, but she didn’t respond. This isn’t the first time she’s ghosted me, but it still hurts deeply every time.
Where I Am Now:
It’s been 2 weeks since this happened, and I’m struggling to better myself. I feel stuck and can’t stop thinking about her. It’s like she’s always on my mind and I do not intentionally think about her. Her constant ghosting, breadcrumbs of affection and past betrayals have left me emotionally scarred. Thoughts of her overshadow everything I do. I know I need to move on, but I don’t know how.

What I Need:
I’m reaching out for advice on how to cope with this pain and move forward. How do I stop thinking about her? How do I rebuild my life and find my strength again? If you’ve been through something similar, how did you manage to heal and let go?

2024.05.13 22:13 Shut_The_Box Adoptive mom kicked me out a month after turning 18, any advice?

I'm actually going crazy. I was born in Egypt and my parents moved to the U.S. specifically Philadelphia and I guess to be criminals because when I was ~2 child supportive services took them from me. As a result, I've had dozens of therapists, been in and out of behavioral facilities, and have (or had) an adoptive mother. Our relationship wasn't perfect but I reminded myself that she chose me and that she's really the only mother I know. Even though she didn't understand certain things, like why getting my black hair done was so expensive or why girls at school told me I should start wearing a bonnet, she always provided me with the essentials.
Earlier this year, I was at a long term behavior facility after my mom would lock me out everyday because I would 'annoy' her and it would be 20-30 degrees out and I couldn't go home. I normally spent my time at the library, but she had control over my library card and removed the ability of me to access the computers because I was 17 at the time. My mom forced me to drop out of high school and said it affected my mental health and how she would send me to JobCorps (A education and learning program from the U.S. government) After my 18th birthday (less than a month ago), my mom made comments about how she doesn't need to take care of me and how I am on my own but I didn't believe her until now. She got upset at me and I didn't even fight back, but she drove me 3+ hours from Delaware (where I moved after Philly) to a shelter in Pennsylvania. I couldn't finish high school, I have no social worker, and I just wished my mom happy mother's day but she hasn't said anything. What can I do?
I really don't know what to do and I just want to go back home to my mom and people I know, I have no other family since she lives alone and I don't have contact to anyone biologically relted to me. I'm over 3 hours away from my home and I don't know anyone here. I'm in the same facility as 50 year old men and I don't care that my mom kicked me out I just want to go back home to her. I have absolutely no money apart from an Old Navy giftcard I got for my birthday, so taking the bus or transport is out of the picture. Is there anything I can do or is this just my life now?
I'm not trying to look just for sympathy but it's hard not to be depressing with what's happened to me. I never thought I would never had imagined myself being homeless, specifically considering my mom is making well over 6 figures a year. If anyone has any numbers I can call or if it's entirely legal for her to kick me out for no reason and forcing me to drop out at 18 please let me know. <3

2024.05.13 22:10 MrMurrayOHS CollegeBoard granting extensions?

We are in full swing of AP exams at the moment. I taught AP Computer Science Principles the first half of the year. With AP CSP - they have a Performance Task which was due about 2.5 weeks before their exam.
Mind you - this was a first semester course so these students have had 4 months to work on this project. Of course, 3-5 students did not submit ANYTHING. The kicker is that one of the sections they submit, is printed out for them to use on the actual AP Exam Written Responses. I emailed these students notifying them that they will not have a print out on exam day due to them not submitting the project.
I was adamant about this the entire semester - that CollegeBoard will NOT give extensions if you do not submit it on time. Just like in my College classes - if I submitted at 12:00AM when the due date was 11:59PM, my professors did not care. They certainly didn't reach out to ME to ask me if I needed more time.
Well apparently these students have been given the ability to turn something in by Exam Day. Apparently a majority of the students are claiming "technical issues" when they are being asked about it by the Testing Coordinator.
What sort of message is this sending to students?? This is an AP class, it is supposed to have the highest expectations of all courses in High School. As close as we can get it to the College experience but here we are asking the students if they need more time. I wouldn't be as put off by it if the students had initiated the dialogue but they didn't. If no one had intervened, they would be sitting in that exam room with nothing.
Any other AP teachers experienced this from CollegeBoard? Guess I should start telling students they can do whatever because someone will bail them out, right??
