2024.05.14 02:52 artistic-autistic PDA profile and can’t build a dental hygiene routine

hi all! i’m an autistic adult and have struggled with my dental hygiene routine for years. i don’t remember the last time ive brushed my teeth daily and nightly - must’ve been about 5-ish years ago when i had braces in high school. i don’t feel like i ever really had a “habit” in place of brushing my teeth. as a kid my parents always reminded me and it felt very forced at times (sometimes id just say i did it when i didn’t). the dentist has always been somewhat scary because i feel a lot of pressure not to get cavities. i feel like my main problem is demand avoidance with this task, and i really haven’t found a good way to get around it. i’ve tried buying cute toothbrushes for motivation, combining my toothbrushing and shower routine, setting reminders.. any other ideas that have worked for anyone? i’ll take anything as im really not doing much of any dental hygiene at this point

2024.05.14 02:41 Dismal_Matter7854 Does anyone have a recommendation for a dentist that’s willing to give a good deal when paying cash ?

So here’s my experience so far. I went to a dental clinic that has multiple locations. One location quoted me at 9k total but if I pay cash lowered it to $5500 today only 6k any other day. Also $7600 if I financed. I went to a different location that’s closer for me and they quoted me at 12k total 11k for cash. I need a lot of work done and my husband does as well. We were hoping to find someplace to get both our work done and get a good deal as we don’t have dental insurance. So far my quote has been for a root canal and a few crowns and my bridge that came out as well as a few cavities. Any suggestions are appreciated!

2024.05.14 01:23 cfalcon279 Dental Hygiene in the Middle Ages

I have an odd question. Exactly how was dental hygiene practiced in the Middle Ages, if toothbrushes and toothpaste didn't even exist at that time?

2024.05.14 01:06 pai9ie Buy now pay later loan

Asking for help for my sister in law. She is currently in dental hygiene school, so her income in a year will be significantly higher, but she is only part time now and lives paycheck to paycheck while in school. Her car is on its last leg, but she can’t afford a car payment now. Is there such thing as a loan that would allow her to defer payments until she graduates (one year)? Is it possible to use a student loan? Thanks!!

2024.05.13 22:54 goldenknit I have decided that today is the day for me to change. I would appreciate feedback.

I am 19F from the UK. I am obese and I also have PCOS (apparently) I am saving up to get an ADHD/Autism assessment privately. I attend university, studying history. I have been in therapy for depression previously but hated it so I stopped attending (first time it was an online chat thing which I hated, second time it was over the phone and the lady just basically gave me the NHS depression quiz every time, and told me to write down how I felt)
I am sick of hating myself, today I have decided to make the change to better myself and hopefully, one day, hate myself a little less. I went with my mum to walk the dog today, and worked a little on one of my essays (I have been in a rut and it needs to be in by 1pm Wednesday, hopefully the urgency will kick in tomorrow) I ate healthier than usual today, I had a Ufit white chocolate protein shake, chicken and kimchi ramen and some shredded roasted pork.
I know hygiene is important, so I have showered today. I have also cleansed and moisturised my face. I have crocheted a little, because fun hobby = happier.
I am scared to go to the gym, I have social anxiety and hate talking to people, and I don’t know how to use any of the machines. I don’t want an induction, I know I probably won’t be but I am terrified of being judged. If I were to go to the gym I would probably walk on the treadmill, and I am scared that I’d be taking someone else who deserves it mores spot. I know they don’t deserve it more, but I feel like they do (if you get what I mean)
I know I should go to the gym, and I know I should eat healthier. What else should I do?
Edit: also, I am bad with dental hygiene, brushing and flossing was never forced as a habit for me as a kid. I often gag when brushing so I am buying a low foaming toothpaste tomorrow as well as floss. I have swished mouthwash, I know it isn’t as good but it’s something. I have the same not a habit issue with showering.

2024.05.13 22:33 itchimari Dry mouth is making me miserable

I just got back from the dentist and they said I needed six fillings done. After years of having only one or two fillings as a kid, I’ll be up to 13 fillings being done in a little over a year and it’s humiliating. As far as oral hygiene goes, my dentist has said I am thorough and doing everything right. I had no buildup of any kind for the inspection, I’ve gotten a mouth guard from them, used prescription fluoride, a 10% hydroxyapatite paste with fluoride in it on top of using MI paste after, I recently started using expanding dental floss to make sure I was getting everything out, but I’m still hit with rapid tooth decay, sensitivity, and more medical bills. I have never enjoyed soda and I hate carbonation in general, I use Xylimelts every night save for the nights when I run out, and I use Biotene gel in a pinch. I drink plenty of water but my throat feels like cotton in a matter of seconds. It’s because of the medications I take, but one of them saved my life, and the others are sort of a “deck of cards” situation. I feel like I’m running out of options and I’m just doomed to be more filling than person at this point and it feels like it’s my fault. I hate being seen as lazy or unhygenic but saying I have 13 fillings is bound to make someone think less of me. Are there any other options I haven’t tried? At this point I’m not sure if it would be more cost effective to just take everything out and get dentures at 22 and get it over with.

2024.05.13 21:40 Acrobatic-Diamond209 What jobs are out there in healthcare for moderately smart students lol?

What healthcare careers are out there for a good student? I tried nursing school and dental hygiene but it was insanely cut throat. You had to get an A in basically everything. I'm 34 and my passion is in healthcare. I'm a technical thinker. I pivoted to social work and graduated with high honors but my heart isnt in it at all. I'm very smart but am only about a B+ average student when it comes to math and science. I dont care too much about a super high salary. My life goal is to be happy with a decent income
Thoughts?

I’m currently a dental hygienist and I’m curious about other avenues that I can take. I thought about sales rep, consulting etc.. but not sure where to go still making the same (if not more) money. I love dentistry but I feel a little stuck in hygiene. Anyone here work for Crest? Colgate? Or a company in dentistry that you can do remote work?? How did you get into it? Any advice helps!! Thank you

2024.05.13 20:38 Sugarplumsunshine- Interview went great!…Haven’t heard back :(??

Hi! I’m a pre- hygiene student. Straight A’s, beautiful cover letter and a well written resume. However, I have no dental experience. :( My manager
My interview was the Friday before last and it was amazing! They showed me around the office, introduced me to everyone, explained that most of their DA’s were pre-hygiene with no experience and trained on the job. (The head doctor conducted the interview because the hiring manager was out of office)
He immediately started the interview with showing me the schedule, talking as if I was already hired. “This is the person who you’ll be taking over for” “This is the schedule you’ll be working” etc. Showed me how to request off, how the schedule is written, hours of operation, job benefits, how I’ll be X-ray certified, when my estimated start date would be.
There weren’t really any interview questions and no rough spots in our interview. I was well dressed for the occasion. Punctual. Everything seemed so seamless. I was told I’d hear back by last Wednesday. But they had more interviews scheduled apparently. They have 6 more interviews and I will hear back by this Friday.
Should I be worried? Would an interview go THAT well and still not work out? The doctor said he prefers to train DAs in office. He was very open about how he’s trained most of the DAs there. I go to the same school as all of them too.
Thoughts?

2024.05.13 20:36 Personal_Design3594 Older Pre-Dental Student

Hello. Is anyone here an older student 29+ pursuing dental school? I am 29, currently a dental assistant. I have an associates degree credit wise but it doesn't formally allow me to have an "associates degree" so I'd be essentially starting a bachelor's degree for undergrad from scratch. I am on the fence about going to dental school as opposed to hygiene so I'm considering getting my hygiene and then taking the extra course for dental school that way I have something to fall back on if dental school doesn't end up working out for me. Any insight welcomed and appreciated 💗

2024.05.13 20:31 Ridi_The_Valiant Should RDHs be allowed to administer botox and dental filler?

There‘s a petition floating around that people can sign in favor of allowing the above to be done by RDHs. I asked the question in noctor, but to receive a more balanced education on this topic, I‘m asking here as well.
I have a family member that is an RDH, and while I don’t doubt that they are intelligent and great at their job, it feels irresponsible to allow a dental hygienist to inject neurotoxins into a patient’s face. The anatomy and physiology education of an RDH doesn’t seem close to that of a dentist, so my gut is telling me that this is an example of scope creep wherein medical professionals are attempting to take on something they realistically don’t have the proper education for. I‘d like to hear the opinion of actual registered dental hygienists on this from a subreddit dedicated to dental hygiene.
Over on noctor, the consensus from most in a past post I found was that it isn’t appropriate. I saw RDHs replying to that post, but there is a potential for bias, so I‘m bringing the topic here.

2024.05.13 20:14 Jack_May230 Back panel of Viv

I have a free Viv with a broken pack panel which I have now taken off, I was wondering my options with what I could replace this with, I know glass would be my best bet but as this would be the back of the tank and covered in expanding foam, but I thought about other options I work with hygienic wall cladding that I can get ahold of easily, this is about 3mm thick and can be quite flexible and is plastic so could melt due to heat but would work similarly to acrylic
Then there’s acrylic which is easy to get from Amazon and I can cut to size myself,
I still need a quote for a price of glass to be cut or look at second hand peices of glass to give my go at glass cutting, but I am assuming it would be cheaper to get acrylic or source an off cut or ‘am clad white rock, hygienic wall cladding’ I would rather go for the cheaper options but I would still like to have a durable finish and something safe for whatever will live in there. Are there any other options? This would be for a 60cm x 90cm back panel for a Komodo vivarium
