It's actually hard to classify Vamsy as a director, while his movies have a very aesthetic feel, he combines it with a fast paced style of narration, rapid fire dialog and a very unconventional style of movie making. That is the reason why his style of movie making was not universally liked, much before Ram Gopal Varma or Sandeep Vanga, he was the true cult director. Or one should say an auteur.
His movies had his own distinctive style. good or bad, that was his trademark. And he covered different genres, from artistic( Sitara) to murder mysteries( Anveshana) to comedies( Ladies Tailor, April 1 Vidudala) to family dramas( Preminchu Pelladu). 4
His real name was Nallamilli Bavireddy and Vamsy was his pen name, that he choose for the screen too. His first movie Manchu Pallaki(1982) itself gave an indication of his talent.

A story of 5 friends played by Chiru( in his early days), Rajendra Prasad, Saichand, Narayana Rao, Saichand and Girish( of Saptapadi) fame, whose life changes after they come in contact with Suhasini. It was a remake of the 1981 Tamizh movie Palaivana Solai, and though not a very big success, the movie gained lot of appreciation from the family audiences for it's very sensitive storytelling. It came as a breath of fresh air in Telugu cinema, that was getting saturated with routine movies.

https://preview.redd.it/7nbdxyri1l0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=aff15a2e23dde274ae98e624b9533d647dfc415c
It was Sitara in 1984 that made everyone take notice of Vamsy, based on his own novel Mahal lo Kokila. The movie also marked Bhanu Priya's debut, as Sitara, a women on the move, who is helped by a kind hearted photographer Devadas( Subhalekha Sudhakar), and helps her to become a movie star later. However when she refuses to go to a particular village for a shooting, Devadas demands an explanation, and she recounts her rather painful past.
The movie straddles two different worlds that of the Zamindaris, and their false prestige, that makes them show off as wealthy, when in reality most of them are actually paupers, and that of the movie stars, and paparazzi. There is a lot to write about this movie, but couple of things, it has the very distinctive style of K.Viswanath in many scenes, under whom Vamsy worked as an assistant director.
And it began Vamsy's collaboration with Illayaraja, who would go on to compose some memorable songs for his movies later. As also the Godavari backdrop, being a native of that place, not many movie directors captured the region as well as Vamsy did, be it the natural beauty or the dialect or the traditions.
It also marked a very visual style of storytelling that would be a feature of most Vamsy movies going ahead. Also the beautiful sunrise and sunset shots, along the Godavari river, contrasting it with the rather claustrophobic atmosphere of the Zamindar Chander( Sarathbabu) mahal. Sitara went on to become one of the biggest hits of that year, as Bhanupriya became a star.

It was with Anveshana that Vamsy came into his own, developing his very distinctive style of movie making. I had already written about it here in detail, but would like to point out that much before RGV in Shiva, Vamsy used the tracking shots to very good effect here, especially in the forest scenes.

https://preview.redd.it/tbj7egrt4l0d1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=6d2230564e08a810f894758c1682812e8ab7eb96
Preminchu Pelladu Rajendra Prasad's first movie as a leading hero, dealt with the clash between old and new. Satyanarayana plays Kurmavataram, a conservative, orthodox Brahmin, who is taught a lesson in humanist values by his grandson Rajendra Prasad, and his estranged grand daughter Bhanupriya. Quite a good movie, had a memorable soundtrack by Illayaraja with songs like "Vayyari Godaramma", "Gopemmma Chethilo", "Nirantharam Vasanthamu", "Nee Chaitra Veena" remaining memorable today.
His next movie Aalapana was not that great with a very disjointed narration, and trying to be a cross between an artistic movie and a thriller, fell in between. However Illayaraja's score was usual great in this movie.

https://preview.redd.it/irmgr9rn5l0d1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=208996a17ba7472498124ade440a03b5b540a7c9
It was Ladies Tailor, that would turn out to be a true cult movie. The story of a tailor Sundaram( Rajendra Prasad) who wants to get rich quick, and follows the advice of an astrologer who predicts that a lady with a mole on her thigh would be fortunate for him. While set in the Godavari region, the narration was totally different, with more risque double meaning dialog, the typical Godavari Yaasa spoken among the working class. And characters like Battala Satyam( Mallikarjuna Rao), Sitaramudu( Subhalekha Sudhakar), the hero's sidekicks, the school teacher Sujatha( Archana), the 3 women Nagamani( Y Vijaya), Neelaveni( Sandhya), Daiya( Deepa) whom the hero chases around, the village head Venkataratnam( Pradeep Sakthi) who hates lovers after a guy duped his sister.
The movie was a true cult flick, that polarized audiences, the college students, youth loved it, while the family audiences hated it. But over the years it has become a cult classic of sorts, and once again a memorable score from Illayaraja with a series of superhit songs "Gopilola", "Porabatidi", "Ekkada Ekkada", "Hayamma Hayamma".

https://preview.redd.it/3s3ikjq97l0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=7526167ee734cec685369b01bfe88c686a86f350
His next movie Lawyer Suhasini was a disappointment in many ways, again Maharshi was one of those "You hate it or love it" kind of movies. The story of unrequited one sided love, of the title character who pursues the woman he loves Suchitra( Shantipriya). It was the Arjun Reddy of those times, and most audiences did not like the style of narration or the rather down beat ending, as the movie flopped. It however had a great score again by Illayaraja with songs like "Sumam Prati Sumam", "Maata Raani Mounam".

https://preview.redd.it/vxxwcf3z7l0d1.png?width=304&format=png&auto=webp&s=eb207b04203df4e501767e190907dfc01e2835e9
Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Recording Dance Troupe to me again one of his best movies ever, set against the backdrop of the recording dance troupes, with a love story thrown in between. The movie was a complete fun ride, with dialogues set in typical Godavari Yaasa, and memorable performances by Naresh, Kota, Mallikarjuna Rao, Ralapalli, Thanikella Bharani, Y.Vijaya. Great soundtrack again by Illayaraja where he also uses old songs of NTR, ANR, Krishna to good effect.

https://preview.redd.it/vl0ja77k8l0d1.png?width=1242&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f976ceb266cc8734bbecc06e4261222dfa3b9b7
Chettu Kinda Pleader was another superb comic thriller, and for a change Vamsy sets the movie in Tirupathi. Remake of the Malayalam movie Thanthram, the movie has Rajendraprasad as Balaraju, a down and out lawyer, who gets to fight the case of a rich widow Sujatha( Urvasi), when her father in law Sarabayya( Gollapudi) files a suit claiming the property is his legally. Vamsy wonderfully combines comedy with drama and thriller, creating a really entertaining movie. Somehow it was not much of a success when released, but in later years has become a favorite on video, DVD. Again a superb musical score by Illayaraja with songs like "Jigijigaa", "Allibili Kalala", "Neeru gaari paari poku", "Chalti ka Naam Gaadi".

https://preview.redd.it/84okdbaa9l0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=5ff09b1aa067cb05ed88cb7e0affd1b9c50179e3
April 1 Vidudula would be Vamsy's last really great movie starring Rajendra Prasad as a smooth talking videographer Diwakaram, who lies, cheats his way to success. His life takes a turn when the woman he loves Bhuvaneshwari( Shobana) puts a condition that he should not tell any lies for one month, and should speak only truth, throwing everything into turmoil. Setting against backdrop of Rajahmundry Railway Quarters, the movie combines comedy and drama effectively, and went on to become one of the biggest hits in his career. Again a superb score by Illayaraja with songs like "Vompula Vaikhiri", " Nijamante", "Chukkalu Temanna", "Okate Aasa".

https://preview.redd.it/dbq554xfal0d1.png?width=220&format=png&auto=webp&s=ef54473e2c9f33d2a829c57af2aaded54a2f7bc5
However Detective Narada with Mohan Babu turned out to be a huge disappointment, as the movie bombed badly. And with Joker, he stopped his collaboration with Ilayaraja and composed the music himself, which in a way started his decline. Vamsy's movies were not the same without Illayaraja, and a series of very disappointing movies followed. Even though he did make a comeback in 2002 with Avunu Vallidaru Ishtapaddaru, it was nowhere close to his earlier classics.
Apart from being a director, Vamsy is also a great writer, he wrote 5 novels, and around 360 short stories in Telugu. His series of stories Maa Pasarlapudi Kathalu, Maa Diguva Godavari Kathalu are a wonderful depiction of life in rural Godavari districts, on par with RK Narayan's Malgudi Days. Not many explored Godavari districts as intimately as he did covering the world of recording dance troupe artists, railway quarters, villages, creating characters with all the quirks, eccentricities, faults who remain memorable to date.

2024.03.28 07:50 Julian_the_VII How did people call an older stranger/unrelated person and a boss in the past?

Today we call an older stranger "Uncle" or "Aunty", and a boss/an official as "sir" or "ma'am"
These words are clearly of English origin, before we borrowed these words in Telugu. How did people refer to strangers and officials.
I asked this to one of my friends too and he told me they used caste titles in the past, is this true?

2024.03.22 11:38 Entharo_entho Boyapati Srinu, the secret feminist?

I was watching Vinaya Vidheya Rama last night. I knew it belongs to so bad that it is good category and 'enjoyed' the stupid plot and acting (especially that DQ lookalike kid). It was then that Hema was introduced as the annoying radical feminist aunty. Such characters were regularly featured in old Malayalam movies as annoying comic reliefs.
Kochamma 1
Kochamma 2
Kochamma 3
Kochamma 4 (I didn't know that liquor bottles come in this size)
Actress Sukumari was famous for playing such modernised kochammas, as they were called then. These characters were portrayed as jealous frivolous petty boastful women who are always trying to one-up other women. Most of them were residents' association secretaries, women's club members, etc. whose vocations were considered a waste of time, their opinions on societal issues intrusions into personal issues (like husband beating wife) and they were often asked to do the household chores in their homes rather than trying to reform the society.
Coming back to VVR . . .
Nonetheless I liked that she asked her daughter to meet the prospective bridegroom's family without makeup, asked the man to learn to pamper her and most importantly, asked for his medical records. I loved the dialogue that problems with horoscope can be solved with 2 homams, but medical problems are more important.
Then I had the shock of my life. Other women in the film like her? Hero's sister-in-law says that the radical feminist is right 😳 She is just blunt and practical 😳 She deserves respect for fighting for other women's rights 😳 They become friends and treat her well.
I am not saying that it is perfect. The portrayal could have have been better. I didnt like the characters touching and punching each other inappropriately. But still . . .
Did I just watch an in and out commercial Indian movie? That too, a Telugu movie starring Ram Charan? The 💩 movie continued as usual but I couldn't think of anything else. Is Boya secretly a feminist? Are there more movies like this?

2024.02.20 18:19 soopersak Your 2 favourite heroes?

Hi friends, let’s play a little game today. Tell me your top two favourite tollywood heroes. I (and others in the comments) will give you a compliment, a roast, and a concept for a multi-starrer movie featuring your two faves such as RRR, SVSC, or Waltair Veerayya (joking about that last one 🤣).
For example: my two favourite Telugu heroes of all time are MM Ravi Teja and natural star Nani
Compliment: I have a good taste for unique storylines and excellent comedic timing
Roast: For Nani, I am destined to defend beautiful films that are inextricably financial “flops” sometimes. For RT, I just have to hope he retires from acting before I have a daughter someday, otherwise he will target her as his next heroine to romance 💀
Dream movie concept featuring them both: family drama/comedy where the two heroes play brothers (or bava/bammardi relationship so they fight with each other more). All the other family members/wedding guests are played by comedic character actors such as Sunil, Ali, and Raghu Babu.
The house is hustling and bustling with guests and activity always because someone in the family is getting married (imagine the party scenes from Baladhoor and Ready), there is always something funny happening in the background for those with keen eyes to laugh at.
I am open to suggestions for heroines, but ideally Anushka would be my pick as someone with great comedic timing and chemistry with RT, as well as having the power and screen presence necessary to play the elder daughter in law of the family. This might be recency bias but I loved the combo of Nani with Mrunal Thakur in Hi Nanna, I wouldn’t be angry at all if they paired up again for this imaginary film of mine. Mrunal could be RT’s younger sister and they could make personal jokes at each other and annoy each other. Little siblings will always be annoying no matter the age 🤣
No real “villains” no chillar jokes, more physical comedy and quick dialogues, no slap jokes. Clean family crackling comedy (like F2 but not as cringe) and hopefully somehow there can be some crazy emotional interval twist on the level of Balagam (theatres must flow with tears of all aunties)
Climax scenes involve some wild hijinks at the wedding reception possibly in foreign exotic location (come on producers, spend a little more cash for this one it’s okay). Try to throw in a brief cameo at the reception, comedy legend Brahmi if possible. He should have a foreign wife who controls him (like manmadudhu). Chaos at the reception causes everyone to get a bit dirty, messy hair, food spilled on each other, etc.
But the final shot is a cute family picture of everyone together smiling at camera, then cut to credits. Written and directed by me.
Guarantee 1000 crores box office 🤣
How is the concept? Give me your compliments, jokes, roasts, story ideas :)
Then tell me, who are YOUR two favourite tollywood heroes? What would your ideal movie with them together look like?

2024.02.15 18:50 dumbswan77 Iam a female and I 70% hate free bus travel

A little background.Iam a junior doctor and I had an overnight duty yesterday. For non medical guys- This means I had a duty of 32 hrs in which I was mostly on my feet. This was my first time travelling by bus post-new govt. and I was quite appalled by the situation. The place iam visiting doesn't have superluxury buses, just the regular ones. There was a massive crowd and everyone is fighting their way to get into the bus which is expected.Standing infront of me was a girl who is being asked by a boy if he could sit next to her and she hesitantly replied that she is saving for someone else. After the guy left, I asked this girl if she really is saving a seat for someone. She said that this guy is basically following her since 3 days and sat beside her yesterday and was a little inappropriate. So, we got in the bus, she a little earlier than me and while she was holding the seat for me ,a 62 yr old man ( to be precise by his words) - picture Anupam Kher, well groomed ,educated man simply came and sat and I we both girls asked him to find another seat(Empty seats are still there ,I looked around for him) and he started lashing at me with words continuously for 2-3 min and calling me an idiot for not respecting senior citizens.( Normally ,I would give the seat to him but I was sleep deprived and my feet are hurting like hell).I was quiet all the while but calling me an idiot poked me and I asked him to get lost.He literally raised his hands on me.???I raised my voice asking why did he raise his hand and his answer was that I asked him to get lost which was my reply for him first calling me idiot. This ended with him murmuring something about free tickets to himself and eventually he left. Also, while I was getting on the bus, some uncles were calling a lady names( Telugu gaaliyan) because she's getting in the bus before them and there are gonna lose their seat to her.I work in govt.hospital and earn 26k which the govt. doesn't credit regularly so when I was short on money in the past, I did travel freely and when I received my stipend, I payed. The entire scenario left me hurt and extremely frustrated. Here are my observations: 1.Uncles are getting frustrated that aunties are travelling freely and they have to fight for seats which I think is valid.
2.This policy did increase female mobility and now the ratio of female to male passengers is 1.
3.All the socio-economic benefits by the policy the govt.claimed are not tangible. It does seem to increase the overall economic activity of state though.
4.The govt.incentive to create this policy is mainly to safely secure 50% of the votes. If it was for the greater good ,it would be a lot better if they deploy around 1/5th of their buses for only female travellers at pre-set intervals.
5.Free travel for women provides benefits for those in need mainly in economic hubs. So, intra-city travel(city buses)and villages to town ~10km( green palle velugu ones)mobility would generate a good ROI without getting diminishing returns.
  1. They should create a polarity by bringing superluxury buses or such sort connecting other cities of Telangana.Currently, these buses mainly connect Hyderabad to other cities.
7.Man, people looooove freebies!

2024.02.04 13:14 Same-Attorney-5340 Suggestions for kids comic like books in Telugu -teaching Telugu to my kid

I am teaching Telugu to my 7 year old. He is making good progress. I can’t seem to find Telugu kids books with pictures to keep him interested in reading in Telugu. (Books with less text and more pictures, comic book style) All I can find online is panchatantra/neethi kathalu which are meant for little older kids. I checked out few book stores in Hyd, but they hardly have any Telugu book collection for kids, like himalaya
Any book suggestions/stores will be greatly appreciated!
