2024.05.16 20:39 Yolistis [PC][MID TO LATE 2000s] Futuristic block breaker game.

Platform(s): PC
Genre: Block breaker /Paddle pong
Estimated year of release: Mid to late 2000s
Graphics/art style: Futuristic, not simplistic (For example the ball and tha paddle had a lot of texture). The paddle and the ball were golden as far as I remember. The paddle also seemed to have two active boosters/engines attached on the bottom part because it seemed to be floating on air like a drone. The background was also detailed, depicting some futuristic looking scenery that was far from the 2D gameplay happening in the foreground.
Notable characters: -
Notable gameplay mechanics: Paddle/Pong, Lots of powerups, 2D but kinda 3D background.
Other details: Futuristic disco music (maybe) (AND A BIG MAYBE I think more than one was released, maybe a trilogy).
I am obsessed with that memory for a long time and my search has yielded no results. Please help me find this game!

2024.05.16 20:29 count2infinity2 Traditional (Japanese) goldfish tattoo question

I am considering getting a neotraditional goldfish tattoo, and I notice on browsing instagram and other locations that a lot of goldfish tats, especially japanese style tattoos, have rope/string wrapped around them. They're often tied up to attach flowers or bells or masks or skulls to the goldfish. Does anyone have a history on this? Do things get tied to goldfish in Japan? Is there a deeper meaning?

2024.05.16 20:25 TobyTTC I have this struggle when it comes to getting clothes and I don’t know how to go about buying clothes anymore without getting a lot of the same pieces.

Here’s the issue I’ve been facing.
Yes I know what style I somewhat like. Yes I know roughly what pieces I want but I hate how hard it is to find clothing pieces that has the “feel” I want from a clothing piece or even pieces with certain specific features.
P.S. if it helps, I’m like 5’5 and 130lbs.
Like for example, T-Shirts. In general, I wear Tshirts that feel like the oh so popular “Uniqlo U Airism Cotton Half Sleeve Oversized T-Shirt”. What I like about it is that it barely wrinkles and even if it looks wrinkled when you first put it on at the start of the day, it gets straightened as you wear it and it feels buttery smooth to the touch unlike some other tshirts available on the market that just feels cheap and extremely rough.
Other clothing items such as Hoodies have their own set of issues that makes it hard for me to find one that fits my bill. In the case of hoodies and sweatshirts, the one major issue I have with them is that 99% of them have an elastic waist which makes it look like ass on my body for someone like me who constantly switch between sitting and standing.
Even pants have their own set of challengee. Pants come in different finishes, length, cuts, materials, thickness, designs, colours, fit etc and finding one that matches all the criteria you want is almost slim to if not none.
And all of these clothing items have one issue in common and that is the fast fashion part of it where pieces come and go, less popular pieces gets phased out or like pieces that are not in season gets swapped for items that are in season and so on…
So idk how to go about buying clothes anymore as I am at that stage where I look at a piece of clothing at the store and either one of the criterias don’t match and so I just don’t see myself wearing it at all therefore I don’t buy them. Without variety in my wardrobe, my wardrobe honestly feels and is kinda bland ngl.

2024.05.16 20:24 IndividualAir1696 Augustus Statue

Augustus Statue
This is the statue of the first emperor of Rome, Augustus, or Octavian. This is a very recognizable statue, as many places have the replica of him, such as Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, for example. This photo however, shows what the statue once looked like from the colors that were available at the time, and the style. It is important to note that many if not all statues being produced in Rome as well as other ancient cultures were in color. However, due to the degradation of the pigment over time, they appear white in the modern era. I wanted to post this picture because it clears up the misconception that these statues were made white, when in fact they were not.

2024.05.16 20:20 Curious-List2914 Please help I am lost

When I think about my life I have no clue where I want it to go but I know somethings I want to do. Am I holding myself back? Are there people in my life who are bringing me down unintentionally? Am I surrounding myself with people and habits that are really just limiting my life experiences. Am I expecting too much out of life?
Well when I think about life and what could make me “realistically” happy I think maybe not stressing so much on where I wanna be. Or maybe even pursuing a dream career. I’ve learned so far that anything you wanna do that makes you money that allows you to live is gonna either A. Be uncomfortable most days or B. Require a good amount of discipline and in most cases both are these are the outcome.
I often day dream about seeing Japan and perhaps even living there. I find myself gravitating towards things that come from Japan for example, my car is Japanese , the game consoles I love and collect are Japanese and i tend to even lean towards Japanese foods , games/ art , shows and music. I feel like Tokyo is full of night life and neon signs , things in Japan seem so cool , advanced and convenient. But to me not in a bad way more like a way that encourages a better life style. I have a passion to try to stay mentally , physically and spiritually healthy. And from the outside looking in the Japanese culture seems to really agree with that too. I tend to find myself thinking logically and not really stressing on the little stuff. I’ve never met a Japanese person but from what I can tell it seems like within the culture life seems full. Well…at least most of the time. Because I understand the concern and problem in Japanese culture has been similar too and or over working/work life stress and depression but on the other hand it seems like after work many people tend to go out to eat or socialize. People are competitive care about their jobs , hobbies and family. People just seem more discipline.
Now before I continue. Let’s talk about what a dream careelife looks like to me. 1. My relationship with God is good 2. I am fit and in shape 3. My job is related to or flexible with my forever changing interest and need to adventure and learn 4. I work on more of my own time possibly owning my own brand or business 5. I invest my money in things that allow me to continue to travel or freely indulge in my passions of cars , fitness and life 6. I am motivated noticeably more than I was was in the past and my discipline is on point! 7. When the time is right I find myself finally settling down with a women that is physically attractive and mentally there for me So what can we do? Well I feel like I know but don’t at the same time. I work in an automotive shop making more money than I ever have with the chance to make more (40k annually at 20y old) which to me isn’t terrible but I feel like am I only doing this because it’s better than working at Walmart or am I doing this because I went to school for it when I didn’t really know what I wanted out of life, but to be a successful artist/entrepreneur? When I begin to feel lost in life I tend to day dream about Japan / Tokyo and I think hm Would life be better if I just started over but isn’t that sefish? I have a mom at home who’s blind she needs help my dad runs a business? My brother is 27 but he’s still family… is it selfish to want to leave and start over is this what God wants of me is it against his plans ? I mean he gave us free will and as long as we trust him we’ll be okay right !? I. Don’t. Know. When I lean on him and try to knock my bad habits I find myself distancing myself from almost everyone in my life. I go thru spells of unemployment because I feel like I need to gather myself and be alone make a plan and work on myself. Sometimes I do things like social media and it feels like it’s lined up with God or it doesn’t or my music doesn’t but producing music does, or making videos about travel seems fun making a channel based on finding the meaning of life or how to find your passion seems fun but according to religion it seems like the meaning of life is GOD and your passion should be GOD and all eyes on GOD and you will be okay and that sounds great it sounds okay and fine. But I’ve tried and tried and I’m confused I’m very confused. I need help and I do ask God for help , I pray I talk to older people to pick their brain and I come to a conclusion that feels fake I don’t ever really feel satisfied. I feel like I’m allowing people to create my life. My job selection and school career just felt very “people pleasy “ like oh I’m doing this because it would make my parents proud. But now I want my own life and have been creating it but I’m stuck with the consequences of my past decisions so I feel like I can only go so far. I feel stuck I feel nervous I feel worried about my future I’m worried that I won’t be satisfied And I even try to live as if God with take the wheel and then I snap into reality of my physical world and then start worrying am I going in the right direction is this God or is this me doing bare minimum? Am I fulfilling myself? Is that supposed to matter ? I need help. Please! 🙏🏼

2024.05.16 20:19 NoURider New game with previous weapons?!?

New player. New obsessed player. I noticed the following youtube video.
Which DS3 Boss Soul Weapon is Truly the Best?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-Yl7373-eQ&t=1338s&ab_channel=Snuppet
At the beginning of the video user outlines the rules (@1.28 - 2.30 in vid). Start a new game and equipped with a boss weapon for the run.
Basically, wondering how one can use a boss weapon (or any item) on a new player out the gate (I am assuming if one plays NG+ one uses the same character from original game?)? I thought one can not share weapons, etc. between players (via Storage Box, unlike Diablo 2 for example)?
Just curious, as I am doing a strength build for my first run through, so I have sold a few items (like Astora Straight Sword as I will not build up the faith. I likely would not have if I could hand it off to a new user build.).
I am playing on PS5. Not sure if there may be some mods for a PC based install to allow this?
That will be my noob question of the day. Stay tune for other basic questions re Dark Souls 3

2024.05.16 20:15 Pookarova [PC] [2005 - 2013?] Top-down, 2D - RPG game about playing as many different species of animals in an eco-system

Platform(s): PC
Genre: Top-down, 2D - RPG
Estimated year of release: 2005 - 2013
Graphics/art style: Low poly, sort of semi-realistic (no bright colours), I don't think it was pixel graphics. Pretty sure there were changing seasons.
Notable characters: None - you were able to play as many different species of animal and able to live through their life cycles.
Notable gameplay mechanics: Ability to play as many, MANY different animals in an eco-system. I don't remember exact examples, but I think you had to pay money to play as animals higher in the food chain - you could play as herbivores living underground I think, and as a bird.
Other details: For some reason I remember drinking minerals from water, and that being something quite important.

2024.05.16 20:01 Fredrickthyme Impressionistic Master - Debussy’s Contribution

Claude Debussy, a prominent figure in Impressionist music, revolutionized harmony, melody, and cultural perceptions in music through his innovative compositions. Let's break down his impact statistically:
  1. Harmony:
    • Debussy's harmonic language moved away from traditional functional harmony, embracing modal and pentatonic scales, whole-tone scales, and parallel chords.
    • Statistical analysis could show a decrease in the prevalence of traditional tonic-dominant relationships and an increase in the use of non-functional harmonic progressions.
    • Debussy's harmonic vocabulary expanded the tonal palette available to composers, influencing subsequent generations of musicians.
  2. Melodies:
    • Debussy's melodies often featured fluid contours, incorporating elements of pentatonic and whole-tone scales.
    • Statistical analysis might reveal a departure from conventional melodic structures, with a focus on atmospheric, evocative lines rather than traditional, singable melodies.
    • His melodies often blurred the lines between melody and accompaniment, contributing to the overall impressionistic aesthetic of his music.
  3. Culture:
    • Debussy's compositions challenged traditional notions of form, structure, and tonality, reflecting the changing cultural landscape of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
    • His rejection of German Romanticism and embrace of French musical traditions helped to establish a distinct national identity in French music.
    • Through his use of exoticism and non-Western musical elements, Debussy contributed to the broader cultural fascination with the exotic and the mysterious during the fin de siècle period.
Statistical analysis of Debussy's compositions could provide insights into the frequency of specific harmonic progressions, melodic contours, and stylistic features. By examining patterns and trends within his music, researchers can better understand his unique contributions to the development of music harmony, melody, and cultural expression.
  1. Cultural Examples:
    • French National Identity: Debussy's rejection of German Romanticism and his embrace of French musical traditions helped to establish a distinct national identity in French music. His compositions, with their evocative depictions of French landscapes and folklore, contributed to a sense of cultural pride and nationalism.
    • Impressionist Movement: Debussy's music is often associated with the Impressionist movement in painting, which sought to capture the fleeting impressions of light and color. Like the Impressionist painters, Debussy focused on atmosphere, texture, and suggestion rather than precise detail, creating music that is more about mood and impression than literal representation.
    • Cultural Exchange and Exoticism: Debussy's fascination with non-Western music and exoticism is evident in works like Pagodes from Estampes and La soirée dans Grenade from Iberia. These pieces incorporate elements of Javanese gamelan music and Spanish flamenco, reflecting the broader cultural fascination with the exotic and the mysterious during the fin de siècle period.

2024.05.16 19:55 Uetur Old Kroot Carnivores gifted to me in a bag

I had a buddy who wants me to play warhammer give me a baggie with 45 kroot Carnivores and bits from the old kits (along with other stuff). So I am trying to figure out fixing these up and if there are any models I need to single out or look out for?
I came from Star Wars Legion so WYSIWYG is a little new to me. I also played and followed the tournament scene so any nuance about what is "legal" is appreciated. I have lots of friends who won't care but I do lol. Like did the bases change for these in size?
What is a kroot shaper is an example? It appears to be an older captain style unit, is it just a discontinued model, does it function as one of the new shapers. Etc?
Anyway I spent way too much time trying to read articles and find info but it has been pretty hard tbh.

2024.05.16 19:45 Easy-Perception-4402 29 [M4F] #Germany - Are you struggling with life? I help!

Do you spend a lot of your time day dreaming what life would be like with your perfect match? Would that life consist of lots of quality time spent together, shared hobbies, travelling together, supporting each other and sharing not just the good times? Are your passions a weird conglomerate of sciency and artsy topics? We might just be a match. No, this is not an infomercial.
What makes finding my match somewhat difficult i,0s that my personality is all over the place, I can't really be put into a box and I dream of finding someone I'm deeply compatible with. I have a PhD in physics/math and work in a related field, involving IT and programming. My take on life is rather critical, rational and I'm not religious. BUT I'm also very by morals, emotional in certain aspects and my biggest aspiration in life is having a happy, fulfilling relationship where we are inseparable, each others best friend and more. A soulmate sorta thing if you wish, even though souls obviously don't exist...right?
Soo what are my passions that we could hopefully share together? I have to get the cliché out of the way first, I'm really big on films/tv shows/video games/manga and some books. It's not just something I consume to overcome boredom though, I'm extremely interested in stories and the art of story telling. My tastes are varied and something that would be fun to discuss, some of the things I like:
The point being, talking about stories, analysing movies together or writing our own video game plot (don't worry I already have an amazing idea, but not so good at writing dialogue)/short stories is a big thing I'd like to share in a relationship.
Still with me? Some other things I enjoy:
Phew ok, not done yet. I need to say something about the type of romantic connection I'm desiring as it's somewhat off the norm. I want to spend a lot of time with my partner. A lot. That doesn't even mean constantly engaging with each other, but just being around each other, checking in on each other, leaving little notes, generally what they would call being clingy. Maintaining a happy relationship should be the number 1 priority in your life, as it would be for me. I would never neglect you in favour of other people or obligations and expect the same in return. Location wise would be great if you're in Germany of course, but really doesn't matter that much to me. This would just be an awesome motivation for me to travel somewhere and as I'm very flexible in my day to day life, I would make a visit happen sooner than later.
Appearance wise, 183 cm, caucasian, slimish/fitish/averageish build, short dark brown hair and eyes. Finally, I'll finish off with an arbitrary list of traits that describe me and I'm simultaneously seeking out in a woman: sense of humour (did that come across...like, at all? Writing this post I felt like it was all rather serious at times, because I take this seriously, but my style of communication is more light hearted, being silly together, not taking everything too seriously, but being able to talk maturely should the situation require), responsible, curious, reliable, trustworthy, loyal, honest to a fault, dedicated, creative, self-aware, honest again because it's important, thoughtful, caring, kind but not a pushover, enjoys arguing/debating, romantic, sweet. If you have a (very?) k1nky side that would be the cherry on top, but it's not a must and all in due time.
Have a virtual cookie for making it this far. Now don't be shy and send me a PM already, telling me what's on your mind. If you send a chat and I don't reply, send a little PM as a follow up in case the chat didn't work.

2024.05.16 19:44 k9ofmine Struggling with new character reference feature.

I am trying to make 4-5 icon-like illustrations in the same style. First, I got Midjourney to create a character reference I liked of a dog barking.
Next, I want to get an illustration of this dog chewing on a shoe, and another of the dog sleeping. I want to maintain the same style, since these are supposed to be images in a series that go together.
When I use the --cref parameter, I end up getting images that look pretty similar but not quite right.
OG Prompt: flaticon of dog barking, viewed from the side, white background, simple style, clear lines
2nd Image: flaticon of dog chewing a shoe, viewed from the side, white background, simple style, clear lines --cref https://s.mj.run/atbl_VEHzdA
The results with this 2nd image prompt might include the shoe, but the dog maintains the posture a lot of the upright, barking position. Example 1 Example 2
Or, the style is too different from the OG - Example
I've tried playing with the --cw parameter, but when I use --cw 80 or --cw 50 that tends to change the style too much to the point where it no longer matches the OG image. Example
I tried messing a little bit with the style reference (sref) property but again, wasn't able to get a consistent result.
Any suggestions?

2024.05.16 19:30 Al_My_Pal_ HELP!! I’m a streamer and need a nee PC ASAP!

I’ve been streaming a couple months now from my decade old Mac and all of the extra demands on the system recently has caused it to decline fast. I had to cancel a stream today because of how badly it’s running these days so I need to get something new built quickly to avoid having to cancel too many more. I’ve never been super into PC gaming because things rarely run well (if at all) on Mac but I’d like something that’s powerful enough to change that! I also obviously need it to be able to run my streaming programs, capture card, etc. well. Thanks in advance for your help!!
Is this a brand new build, or an upgrade to an existing build?
New buid
What will this PC be used for? Examples include things like gaming, general/multimedia use, photo/video editing, coding, AI/ML, etc. Include specific games and applications you intend to run, and any particular performance goals you have, as each may have different specific hardware needs.
Gaming, streamer, general use. I use OBS, AVerMedia capture card, USB logi camera, USB microphone, and would like to be able to branch into PC gaming as well.
What country will you be purchasing in? If you are in the US, do you live near a Micro Center? For other countries, please check if your country is supported by PCPartPicker by using the country selector dropdown on the top right - if not, please provide some links to reliable local vendors you are comfortable ordering from.
US
Do you need one or more monitors included in the budget? Please list how many and any size/resolution/refresh rate preferences if needed.
One moniter, ideally anti-glare if possible.
What is your preferred and maximum budget range for this build, in local currency? Parts lists may sometimes have additional shipping costs. Please note whether prices in your country include sales tax or not, and adjust your budget accordingly. Typically VAT countries will have it included in the part list prices, whereas regular sales tax countries like the US and Canada will not.
I've never built a PC before so if I need to pufget higher for my needs please let me know, but ideally I'd like to stick around the $1,500 USD range.
Do you need WiFi, or do you have a wired ethernet connection available?
Ethernet
Do you have any specific size or noise requirements for the build?
Ideally as quiet as possible since it will be near my microphone for streaming.
Do you have any aesthetic preferences for color or lighting? Describe what you're looking for, or feel free to provide some links to examples that may help. Some people prefer an inobtrusive stealth build, while others may prefer a case full of rainbow RGB.
I'd like for the case to be either white or a light pastel color (blue, pink, purple, etc.) with tempered glass and RGB style lighting, bonus if the lighting can be changed but not necessary. Size I'm not sure since I dont know how large the parts will be, but big enough to hold everything with some room to spare to include some collectibles/figures inside the case to display.
Any other specific requests or requirements? Examples might include a specific minimum amount of storage, or a particular CPU socket for a future upgrade path, etc.
Again I'm super new to this so I'm not quite sure about numbers, but I'd like to have more ram than I need to make sure I have room for growth and to run all my programs.

2024.05.16 19:28 ResurgenceOfCool GREP with long list

GREP with long list
I'm working on a long test prep book in the medical profession.
I have been amassing a list of all the diseases that need to be italicized. Currently it's looking like this in case anyone needs a list of diseases:
XanthomonasTreponema pallidumStreptococcusStomatococcus mucilaginosisStenotrophomonas maltophiliaStaphylococcus epidermidisStaphylococcus aureusStaphylococcusSerratia marcescensSalmonellaPseudomonas aeruginosaPseudomonaspneumophilaPlasmodium falciparumNeisseria meningitidisNeisseria meningitidisNeisseria gonorrhoeaeMycobacterium tuberculosisMycobacteriumMoraxellaListeria monocytogenesLegionella pneumophilaLegionellaKlebsiellaHaemophilus influenzaeGiardiaFusariumEscherichia coliEnterococcus faeciumEnterobacter cloacaeE. faeciumE. coliCorynebacteriumClostridium perfringensClostridiumClostridioides difficileChlamydia tracomatisCandida aurisCandidaC. diffBacteroidesBacillus anthracisAspergillusAeromonasAedes aegyptiAcinetobacter
It's listed in reverse alphabetical order so it doesn't quite when it finds the first instance (so it grabs the whole "Candida auris" instead of "Candida" when it's by itself-- there are examples of both cases in the doc).
Here is an example of a question and the paragraph style (looking at Clostridioides difficile and C. difficile in the question):
https://preview.redd.it/tslo0c2dpt0d1.png?width=1172&format=png&auto=webp&s=8dbc64b99c50aeb66e9094cb8a76a0cda94d8cd5

C. difficile is on the last line of the second image and the Clostridioides difficile is on the line above.
Why isn't it italicized in the text?!? It's working in other areas but not the questions. Is it because the list is too long?

2024.05.16 19:22 Oelgo 1984 - the so called "pop music's greatest year": Why was there such a hit song peak exactly 40 years ago?

First of all I have to say I'm not a big music expert. More like the "listens-to-everything" type. Honestly, of course there are styles of music that I don't particularly appreciate (Rap, Jazz, Metal), but otherwise everything from Monteverdi operas to current electronic pop is included. I therefore ask you to treat my assumptions with caution and to forgive some statements that may not be particularly profound.
I often go to YT to listen to music (I often just watch the videos in passing because I don't necessarily need moving images to accompany music that I like). I've noticed lately that even without the YT algorithm (I'm deleting my cookies), I keep clicking on songs that came out in 1984. I don't do this consciously, but simply because it really seems that exactly 40 years ago only super-hit songs were coming out. Then I did some research and actually: Even if you don't just focus at Number 1 hits (I'm from Europe, but it seems the differences to the kind of songs that became hugely popular in the United States where not that big then), it feels like that during the 52 weeks of 1984 more than 100 songs that became enormously famous came out in '84 - that's two world hits every single week!
Most of them still stand the test of time and remain well-known even to people who weren't born in 1984 yet (like myself). For example, when I think of your karaoke sessions at my colleges student club, I would assume that roughly 10% of pop songs people choose to sing there (and the night is long...) where written and published in 1984! No other year seems so significant for pop music history, not even the also extremely popular Y2K for the Noughties, because the era of 00's-Hits spans over more than just one year (I would say 1997 to 2002). Of course some 80's pop classics also came out one or two years earlier or later, but I would take any bet that these wouldn't even represent the majority of the 80's-songs if you added them together against the tunes that came out in '84 ALONE!
Furthermore, I realized that I'm not the only one to notice that phenomenon: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/100-best-singles-of-1984-pops-greatest-year-163322/dead-or-alive-you-spin-me-round-like-a-record-174440/ or https://nerdist.com/article/why-1984-is-greatest-pop-music-year-prince-van-halen-madonna-bruce-springsteen/
But why was that? Why did 1984 become a crucial year for pop music? In the articles, I didn't find any reasonable explanation for this other than the rise of MTV (even though MTV didn't even exist in Europe at the time, and yet the songs became hits here too). I would also find it interesting how contemporary witnesses, i.e. people who experienced the 80s musically, perceived this: Were you aware back then that 1984 was a special year with one hit after another...?
Compared to 1984, 2024 seems a rather absolutely irrelevant year in pop music history: Everything is dominated by Taylor Swift - yeah, I know, Michael Jackson ruled 80's pop, but at least he wasn't alone... Maybe 1967 is probably the only comparable year to 1984 in terms of popular music - but for rock, not pop, when the big groups of the time such as the Beatles, Stones, Beach Boys, The Who, Kinks etc. released very important beat and rock albums and songs that are still widely known "oldies" today (a fact that I learned trough articles BEFORE recognizing it by myself, to be honest).

2024.05.16 19:20 dfaire3320 Hey SoD Devs...you know you want to do this! you KNOW you want to do this!!!!

Yet another Raid Idea....
A low level instance. Could you imagine discovering a new chasm somewhere in Wailing Caverns where there's a new load of creatures that have never seen the light of day. so much stronger than anything you've ever gone up against.
The Serpent Lords were only the gatekeepers. Minions compared to what was waiting ahead. Bigger Dino's and Oozes with crazy new abilities.
Mutanis, Kresh, Skum, Verdan, even the Deviate Fairy Dragon. All youngsters who just went out wandering the caves and got lost Land Before Time style...And their Parents are much bigger and angrier.
At the back of the Cavern, there is a huge sparkling pool of life where these creatures got their energy from. A HUGE Octopus type boss comes out. and you have to split into groups to make sure each tentacle dies at the same time all while 2 or 3 tanks rotate holding aggro on the body.
And at the end...when you think its all over, There is a body of an old adventurer on a Pyre, you awaken him and defeat him...but each raid reset, he is a random class (Mage, Warrior, paladin, Hunter...etc.) with abilities that match that class type. and you must defeat him. BUT YOU DONT KNOW WHAT CLASS HE IS UNTIL PHASE 2. where you think you defeated his frail ass and he falls into the water and reawakens into his younger self. and the Epic weapon he Drops is always that coinciding classes BIS weapon and a random epic manual of another class that was too difficult for him to learn, teaching an all new spell or ability.
For example. the Warrior boss drops either a massive 2h weapon or a 1h/shield combo and a Warlock Manual that a warlock can use to add a new summon spell for an all new demon pet. Or maybe a new hunter shot that can momentarily leech or net a mob.
....yeah, thats what it should be.
In exchange of Blizz using this idea and raking in the millions upon millions of dollars. They can just name the last boss after me. make an opening cinematic in his (my) image, give me a free wow sub for life, and make a blizz shop pet Octopus that slithers behind you and donate a portion of each sale to Jack and Jill Foundation for Children with parents with cancer....Oh. and a mount that only I will ever have!!!!!! (thats not too much to ask, right?)...all negotiable of course.

2024.05.16 19:12 drewj3james Ghostly Magic System

So I've posted a lot of times on this subreddit, and a part of that is because I haven't fully fleshed out the details of my world; I had a basic idea of what I wanted my world to look like, the types of magic I wanted to be there, and the world in which I wanted that magic to occur. I'm someone who likes grinding down on my magic system until it makes sense, so I haven't really been able to focus on writing my actual story, although in fairness I've tied up a few plot threads. Now, I think I have a genuine final product and can actually start writing my story. So here it goes.
FUNDAMENTALS
The three fundamental forces in my universe are Dream, Spark, and Sacrifice. Dream is the product of the underworld, Sacrifice resides in the domain of the living, and Spark is the energy that binds and separates the two worlds. I'm very fascinated by the idea of making a sacrifice, or the spilling of blood in many cases, being necessary for dreams to come true.
Dream, in this context, is imagination, memory, past, future, desire, fear, all that does not yet exist but existed or has the potential to exist. The fuel of Dream is memory, because a dream that is not remembered, even subconsciously, is one that ceases to exist, and Dream tends to absorb memory.
Sacrifice, in this context, has a more neutral meaning than we're used to; it only means a change in the mortal realm, mental or physical, that initiates the coming to life of a dream. Think of a mother, who sacrifices or is made to sacrifice her body for 9 months to give birth to the dream of a child, the possibility made real by the change in the mother's physical circumstance. Or an empire; someone dreamed of it, but they needed to spill blood to bring it into fruition. The blood and death, not the action, is the sacrifice, and that sacrifice brings life to a dream.
Spark, broadly, is energy. From a metaphysical perspective, it is the energy that carries out a sacrifice and, using that sacrifice, brings Dream into existence. Two people needed to perform the action of intercourse for the mother who gives birth to a child to have made a sacrifice; the act of intercourse induces the sacrifice, which is the state of pregnancy. To go back to the empire example, you need to perform the act of stabbing or shooting a bunch of people, or if you're not into all out war, the act of slitting the throat of the king, for instance. The act induces the sacrifice, which is death, which enables the dream to come true. But more broadly, spark is literally energy, the force that makes the planet move, the sword to swing, the fire to burn.
The child of Dream and Spark is Will. Will is consciousness, the ability to make something happen, to manipulate energy to accomplish a purpose, to make the dream come true.
The combination of all three, Dream, Spark, and Sacrifice, is what creates life, a physical manifestation of the Will; this is what makes life special above all other things. When in your physical body, the Will is bound by that body because the body created by Dream, Spark, and Sacrifice creates a barrier that the Will cannot cross, which is why almost no one can manipulate energy on their own. Once you die, you either cross into the Underworld, the land of dreams, or a Sacrifice in the form of emotional connection interacts with the Will to block it from returning to the Underworld, binding you to the Mortal Realm, making you a ghost, a will that exists in the Mortal Realm but without a physical body usually cannot perceive the world except for other Wills, trapping spirits stuck in the Mortal Realm in their own memories unless they can use the body of another as a host.
The exception to the binding of the Will to the body is through Dream; when you dream, your Spark transfers your will to the Underworld, where all dreams live. Spark has a natural magnetism towards the Underworld, and the Will has a natural attraction to Spark, meaning when you're asleep, Spark is no longer bound by consciousness and is able to take the Will to its natural home before waking. As I said before, dreams are fueled by memory, so when you dream, the Underworld is slowly taking memories from you until you wake up, meaning that most people forget most of what they dream about.
The Mortal and Immortal Realms are separated by a substance in the air known as Valin Steel, which has the effect of cancelling out any binding effect of a sacrifice, detaching Spark energy from the physical form it is bound to, causing it to by default return to the Immortal realm. When Spirits are summoned from the Immortal Realm to the Mortal Realm, that creates a disturbance which causes Valin Steel particles to form into visible chunks of a metallic substance stronger than normal steel. Valin Steel is particularly dangerous because of its combustibility, with only a small amount of exposure to fire being sufficient to cause explosions that can level neighborhoods if not cities with just a few pounds of material.
One other reaction is that of the Will interacting with the physical world. The Will generates Spark, and when it is not bound to a physical body but is still bound to the Mortal Realm, that Spark, when a spirit uses it to manipulate the Mortal world, sinks into and irradiates any material under it, which creates a substance called Emanation, which contains certain levels of Spark, which means it can be combined with other ingredients to induce specific magical effects when the solution makes contact with something; Emanation is thus the basis for all magical potions.
MAGIC
As I said, the Will of a living being cannot cross past or alter that body, but when a living thing dies, while most go to the Underworld, some are trapped here, without a body to bind the Will. Unbound, a spirit's Will allows them manipulate the Spark, and this forms the source of all magic in this world; the key to using magic, therefore, is developing some type of relationship or having a pre-existing relationship with a spirit. Without any sacrifice, spirits can use telekinesis, lightning generation and manipulation, and thermokinesis. Because Spark forms the basis of cognition, spirits can enter your brain and steal your thoughts and memories, share thoughts and memories by imparting them to the being they're passing through, essentially able to impart "suggestions" that, in their strongest form, can act as a form of hypnosis.
Spirits can also briefly possess creatures, but bodies are generally not equipped to handle two sparks in a single host. A spirit possessing a body would cause every part of that body to want to move, and having two sparks in one body can end up killing the host because without constant movement the extra spark ends up just absorbing oxygen from the air for stimulation. This is why when possession occurs it is usually only for brief periods, like a minute or so. The exception is if people learn certain war dances which allow them to use their whole bodies, they can be possessed, therefore possessing the power of spirits, for a much longer time; they have to keep dancing to maintain the stability, and this form of magic use has given birth to multiple martial arts styles based on encircling and constantly barraging your opponent; some of the arts are called Sand-Dancing, Water-Dancing, and Mud-Dancing, all based on using bouts of telekinesis to quickly harness easy to manipulate materials to overwhelm opponents (the inspiration for these martial arts styles would be Capoeira; Capoeira is extremely effective and allows for constant movement).
So the biggest fuel for my magic system is the issue of perception. Most people can't remember visiting the Underworld, most people can't see beyond their bodies, most people cannot see ghosts in the Mortal Realm, and most ghosts cannot see the Mortal Realm because they don't have a physical body with which they can perceive. This creates a situation where, while anyone can use magic because most people can develop some type of connection with spirits, it is difficult in practice for most to do so.
But some people are born with, or in rare cases develop, a unique bond with dream, giving them some or all of these abilities. Really creatives, people with certain mental disorders, or people born from uniquely difficult circumstances that required sacrifice, usually on the part of the mother, that is greater emotionally or physically than what would otherwise be expected, are more connected to Dream, and are therefore more able to perceive it beyond just their physical senses. This represents around 10% of the population; a strong sign of one of these abilities is lucid dreaming, because it means you are able to navigate the Underworld while not having your memories stolen, meaning you can essentially access the dream world whenever you sleep, or if you're trained whenever you want. Seeing spirits in the mortal realm is rare; around 2% of people have the ability, and it's really useful because spirits have the ability to manipulate energy but can't perceive the world around them, meaning that you can make a deal with a spirit for them to lend you their services in exchange for lending your body to them. Another rare ability is astral projection, which comes hand in hand with the ability to perceive the Mortal Realm as a spirit because both involve the ability to perceive the world beyond your physical body. So these ghosts, unlike others, are under normal circumstances essentially autonomous because they can perceive the world around them, meaning they can interact with the world without the constraints of a physical body. These are usually the deadliest types of spirits.
In order to change the nature of something, you need a sacrifice and a spirit must provide the spark necessary to activate that sacrifice. There are three different types of sacrifices:
  1. White Sacrifices, which are made by causing mental anguish or connection. This sacrifice is necessary for two purposes; to create and bind someone to a magical oath which makes it so such an oath cannot be broken as long as the person bound to the oath remains bound, or to create a magical bond between two or more beings, allowing those bonded with each other to communicate telepathically, to perceive events through each other’s eyes, to share memories, and when one dies, to share a living body.
  2. Red Sacrifices, which are made simply by spilling blood. This sacrifice is necessary to transform the physical form of one thing into another form. For instance, to transform an inanimate object into another inanimate object, one must coat that object with their own blood, and have a spirit activate that blood sacrifice by using their spark. Typically, Red Sacrifices involve shedding one’s own blood to change their physical form; when Red Sacrifices are activated, their form changes. When transforming into a form larger than themselves, the spell will cause a person to absorb the soft matter (water, sand, dust, mud, etc.) around them to gain mass, and when transforming into a form smaller than themselves, they shed mass in the form of “Formsand”, which they can then use to transform into their original form. This sacrifice can be permanently imbued as an ability to change into a specific form and back using tattoos made from emanation; the process of tattooing spills the blood necessary for a blood sacrifice, and the specific ingredients, the placement of the ink, and the Will of the tattooer and the tattooed determine the specific form they turn into. Descendants of those who shape shift inherit some of the characteristics of the altered forms of their parents.
    1. Some animals have also evolved ways of using Red Sacrifices to give themselves enhancements, such as the ability to breathe fire.
  3. Black sacrifices, which are made by taking a life. This sacrifice is necessary to bind spirits of the dead to a physical form. The target spirit can perform or activate the sacrifice, but if the target spirit is one that the magic user wishes to control, another spirit has to make and activate the sacrifice. This can be used for a variety of purposes, including permanently binding spirits to a physical object and forcing it to do the bidding of the user, and permanently binding a spirit to a dead corpse, giving them new life in a new body.
Spellcasting is the act of giving spirits you are bound to instructions to perform an action. Basically, spirits recognize certain words as commandments to perform an action based on what they've learned; the more people that recognize a specific word as a specific command, the more potent that spell becomes. Spellcasting in the context of telepathic acts is often performed with songs or poetry, with certain phrases being used as a form of hypnotism as the melodic effect coincides with the spirits placing ideas in your head; this also happens to act as a sort of work-around to the requirement of possession for mind control because the spirit doesn't need to channel their energy through the whole body, just the mind, and they don't need to completely enter the person's body to influence them; this allows some magic users to cross the line from hypnotism into genuine mind control.
