Clint’s Reptiles is tied with Snake Discovery as the best and most beginner-friendly reptile/exotic pet channel on Youtube. I always recommend his vids for anyone looking to get into the hobby.

2024.06.09 05:13 Paris_Gyudon Best Tips I got for earning sapphires!

In total of sapphires Ive gotten since last year would be 300k (Currently have 45k, the rest Ive spent already) and I know lots of people have a hard time earning sapphires so here are some useful tips!
  1. BUY AND RESELL. Some people, in order to get quick sapphires would put items for rather cheap! An example would be someone selling an item for lets say 5k when it's worth is more than that, Like some lucky examples Ive gotten are Alpha chests. Unicorn hunting is great too (And Perhaps Dragon hunting when they come) as their worth is mainly based off looks and if you think someone is underselling them go ahead and resell em for more!
  2. GRIND FOR IT. Special events like the current Dungeon Game, Painted Egg tokens, Light/Darkside event, Pack runs or Phantom hunting, Shovels are examples of these. Earn items and sell them, What I personally do is fight in the Phantom Dimension to buy sapphire potions, then resell em.
  3. LEILANI DAYS (T/TH/S). If you're lucky enough to have the item for Leilani then either sell the item you have for sapphires or trade leilani then sell that, OR go to explorer, check the difference between the item wanted vs item gained, Example, If the Wanted is selling Less than the Gained, buy the wanted, trade, then resell the Gained, If the Wanted it selling more than Gained, Sell the Wanted or buy it off explorer then resell again, especially when the game newly refreshes!
  4. PACK CHEST DAYS (F/S). Sometimes people miss out on the Pack chest days, help em out by selling it to them when the day passes already!
  5. DAILY LOG IN PRIZES. Same as above, for the latest example, Cherry Spiked Collar. The OG colors sell for 3k last I've checked and you can get that item for free if you log in everyday! Personally I have multiple accounts and if I see that the item would be very wanted, I log onto each of my accounts for it!
  6. PET EXPEDITIONS. Your lil buddies could possibly get good items such as Jambassador Wall stickers or Exotic Vials! Personally I'm investing into getting Rainbow pets with the exotic vials and said Rainbow pets could get very good prizes, But you also have the option to sell them (Look out if the vials have a mark or not, those that arent marked are worth more!)
  7. JOIN AJHQ'S CONTESTS ON INSTAGRAM. This is a little less accessible but a tip nonetheless. I personally get most of my Sapphires from winning Prizes then selling them to other players, but since they are worth more than 5k PLEASE be wary, I can make a separate post soon about ways to trust others!
  8. FASHION SHOWS. A fun one I know lots of people enjoy! Prizes could be small, Prizes could be big, if one fashion show makes it so everyone gets a prize definitely join.
  9. BUDDY POINTS. Us Den decorators will spend TONS for furniture. Build up your buddy points to get items from packs and resell them for sapphires.

2024.06.09 04:49 Deafing_silence Ergo sum is awesome

Hands down one of my favorite exotics of all time, I know its a bit early to say this but this is becoming my new pet exotic, granted I don’t have the best roll but I still think its very enjoyable, also with it being a special ammo weapon does it still proc as a sword or would it proc as glaive instead, also what exotics would pair with it do y’all think?

Having a crisis reaction to something that may not be a crisis at all (possible early signs of scale rot?)
This is Artemis, a 6y/o Colombian Rainbow Boa. I adopted her from a coworker of mine, but the more research I did on her care, the more I realized that I basically rescued her from her previous keeper. He would go 1-3 months without feeding her because he just forgot. She was only 1-2 years old at the time, just a baby. Her growth is perminantly stunted. He also didn’t have a heater or a thermostat for her, he just pointed a space heater at one side of her enclosure and called it good. It made the whole vivarium the same temp and she had no gradient to thermoregulate herself.
When I adopted her I immediately started work on improving her husbandry. Replaced her aspen bark with eco earth coco choir. Bought her all sorts of hides, mopani wood, which is resistant to humidity, for her to climb and rub her sheds off onto. I got her some pretty rocks out of my collection and cleaned them, put humidometers and thermometers all over her enclosure. Bought her a brand new humidity resistant ceramic heating element customized for her enclosure, installed on the ceiling so she’ll never accidentally burn herself on it. Brand new thermostat, three water bowls, one for the hot side, one for the middle, and one for the cold side, all big enough for her to soak herself if she so desired. I bought her reptile grade sphagnum moss and made humid hides for her and put them on the hot, middle, and cool side of her enclosure, as well as dry hides and fake plants in all the same areas. I even got her a cute little mushroom shelf with a water bowl in it for her to climb around on, it’s adorable. I fed her as often as I could, basically feeling her almost as soon as she pooped out her last meal, trying to get her weight to a healthy place. I poured all of my love and research into getting her the absolute best husbandry I could learn about.
About 3 months later she got very sick and every exotic pet specialist I brought her to was completely dumbfounded as to what was wrong with her. It was my worst nightmare. I had to give her shots, oral meds, medicated baths. It was actually traumatic for me. But she recovered.
Which is why, now, I’m freaking out. I used the exact brand of Galapagos green sphagnum moss I’ve used the whole time I’ve cared for her and put it in her humid hides after cleaning it. I guess Galapagos suddenly decided to put a different type or more dye in their moss because it dyed her completely yellow. I had a mini heart attack but realized she was just dyed yellow from the moss so I instantly removed it, cleaned her hides, and replaced it with brown sphagnum moss which I sterilized and let cool to room temp. At this time she was shedding, and I noticed she was spending a lot of time in her dry hides, which I found weird because she usually spends her entire shed cycle inside her humid hides, but I didn’t think much of it after she had a good shed with both eye caps.
But now, what really makes me worried, is her scales. Her belly scales have the faintest tint of yellow still, and I’m not sure if it’s just because of the dye in the moss or because it’s possible scale rot? I never thought I had to worry about scale rot with her because she shares phylogeny with anacondas and she is semi-aquatic. I never ever had any issues with her scales looking weird, even when she spends days and days in her humid hide. Now, I noticed her belly scales have the slightest hint of wrinkling. She has always had little freckles on her white belly but I can’t help but worry that they could potentially be blisters? Her scales feel smooth and firm to the touch and she wasn’t flinching when I touched the spots I was suspicious of.
She’s not being defensive, she’s not acting catatonic, and is still very much interested in eating. She was a little mad when I used a soft spatula to open her mouth to check for signs of URI, which looked normal. I literally just cleaned her enclosure yesterday, sanitized and washed every hide, leaf, wall, water dish, everything, and replaced new eco earth substrate, which always comes out of the bag humid and keeps humidity in her vivarium between 90-80% for weeks, which is what her vets said was ideal. But now I’m terrified I somehow gave her scale rot! I bought betadine & Vetericyn Plus Reptile Wound Care Spray in case I need to start treating her right away. I am calling her vet on Monday morning when they open, though her vet is a 4-hour drive away from where I live, which is bumfuck west.
Idk I guess I just wanted to see what you guys think, and if you believe there’s a possibility this could be the beginning signs of scale rot? Am I overreacting? I’m terrified I’m fucking up her husbandry in some way. I’m currently drying out her substrate and replaced all of her humid hides with dry paper towels. Anyone here who has a CRB who has experienced something similar? Sorry for this long rant, I am just having a full blown panic attack tbh.
Tl;DR - my rescue, growth-stunted CRB got dyed green from some sphagnum moss before her last shed. After shedding she still has a hint of yellow on her belly scales, and they are slightly wrinkly. Is this the beginning of scale rot and would it be best for me to start at home treatments right away or wait for her next shed before a vet appt?

Shark AI Ultra Robot Vacuum Review: My Lazy Ass Is Officially a Convert
https://preview.redd.it/1hmfyuf1ad5d1.jpg?width=1792&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b4290a2d295e23cb8099afacf61bbbf2246119ab
Ever get that nagging feeling that your life's a mess, and your apartment's just a physical manifestation of it? Yeah, me too.
But the Shark AI Ultra robot vacuum is the sleek little bastard that promised to clean up my floors and maybe, just maybe, exorcise some of my inner demons. Let's take a closer look...

Update:

BEST PRICE on the Shark AI Ultra Robot Vacuum here:
https://amzn.to/45fSAPt
Let's be clear: I'm not the type to gush over appliances. I'm more of a whiskey and worn-out leather jacket kind of guy. But this Shark, it got under my skin. From the moment I unboxed it, this gleaming silver disc, I felt a mix of fascination and disdain.
Would it really live up to the hype, or was it just another shiny object to distract me from the existential dread creeping in at the edges of my consciousness?

Key Features That Actually Matter

Incredible Suction: This thing sucks. Literally. It devoured dust bunnies, cat hair, and even the stray Cheeto crumbs I'd left behind after a particularly bleak Netflix binge. Carpets, hardwood, it didn't matter – the Shark AI Ultra chomped it all up with a satisfying whir.
Matrix Clean: This isn't just random chaos cleaning. It methodically sweeps your floors in a grid pattern, ensuring no speck of dirt escapes its relentless pursuit. It's like having a miniature OCD detective scouring your home for filth.
Self-Emptying Base: This is where things get interesting. The Shark doesn't just vacuum; it empties itself. This 60-day capacity base is a game-changer for lazy bastards like me. I can go weeks without having to interact with the damn thing, and it still keeps my floors pristine.
Self-Cleaning Brushroll: Hair, be gone. The Shark's self-cleaning brushroll means no more tangled messes to deal with. It's a small detail, but one that makes a world of difference in the long run.
Precision Home Mapping: This Shark's got brains. It uses LiDAR to map your home, avoiding obstacles and cleaning efficiently. It's like a Roomba on steroids, and it's oddly satisfying to watch it navigate my cluttered apartment with laser-focused precision.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Pros:
Unparalleled Suction: This thing could suck the chrome off a trailer hitch. Your floors will be cleaner than a nun's conscience.
Self-Emptying Euphoria: Emptying a dustbin is about as enjoyable as a root canal. The Shark eliminates this chore, giving you more time for debauchery.
Smart Mapping Wizardry: It learns your home, avoids obstacles, and cleans with laser-focused precision. It's like having a robotic stalker, but in a good way.
Pet Hair Annihilation: If you share your abode with furry friends, this is the vacuum for you. It tackles pet hair like a rabid wolverine, leaving your floors fur-free.
Cons:
Carpet Conundrum: While it excels on hard floors, it struggles a bit on thicker carpets. You might need to break out your old-school vacuum for those deep-pile shag rugs.
Noise Pollution: It's not the quietest robot on the block. If you're sensitive to noise, you might want to schedule your cleaning sessions for when you're not home.
Alexa Integration: The voice commands are limited. It would be nice to be able to tell it to clean specific rooms or areas.

Final Thoughts

It's powerful, efficient, and surprisingly addictive. While it's not perfect (what machine is), it's the closest thing to a cleaning miracle I've ever encountered. If you're ready to embrace the future of floor care, give this Shark a whirl. You might just find yourself oddly obsessed.

Please help my Tilly
Please help Tilly
This is my beardie baby Tilly , she is approximately 1-2 years old and I am a first time owner. Her tank stays about 99 to 100° on the left side and about 70 to 60° on the right side she gets crickets and mealworms daily as well as greens, but she has been refusing them for the past couple weeks and will not eat unless she has to and by that I mean, she only eats every once in a while she’s been lethargic and I just don’t know if there’s anything I can do to help. I’ve taken her into a specialist (an exotic pet store ) and they say that she seems fine but I have yet to go to the vet.

2024.06.08 08:00 Arbsquid Gecko really sick. Help!

I bought a 3 month old gargoyle gecko last July (now 14 months old) they've always been small, never consistently over 15 grams. They get weighed weekly. Over one month they dropped 20% of their body weight, down to 12g, with unknown cause, so I took them to a exotic pet vet. They took X-rays and ran some tests and found they had metabolic bone disease and parasites. Their eyes also didn't dilate right. They weren't getting calcium because they're body wasn't absorbing it right and they have never been a big eater. They sent me home with calcium gluconate, metronidazole for the parasites and omnivore care to help get their weight up. Everything was fine for the first 2 weeks, they were gaining weight back, better appetite etc. Then week 3, they started loosing weight again, hasn't had a bite of food over 2 feedings and then 2 days ago, they bit me hard enough to draw blood while I was trying to give them their medicine. They've never done this before, they've always been amazing with handling, even with strangers. Ever since the day they bit me they've been sitting on the bottom of their enclosure, not hanging out on their vines or in any of their hides. They're very defensive and try to bite me when I even try to go near them to give them their medicine. Today, after they were dosed I put them back and when I went to check on them a couple hours later, they were in the same place I had set them on the ground. I opened the cage, no reaction. I touched them a bit, nothing. I picked them up to place them on their favorite vine, wouldn't even try to grip it, so I set them back on the ground. I don't know what to do, I'm worried sick. Please, any help would be appreciated. Any questions, just ask and I'll answer. Edit: I just got off the phone with their vet, they said to keep giving them their medicine over the weekend and that they could see them on Tuesday. If they get worse over the weekend I'll definitely take them to the emergency vet.

2024.06.08 06:31 Loser_Baby_19 Delusions of Grandeur

Some words of ‘wisdom’ recently heard during a live video feed:
“Sorry we do not advise or encourage anyone to get a monkey as a pet, if you watched our live and videos I explained many times…”
“I can’t with a conscious heart advise anyone to get a monkey, sorry. It’s so much work, have to clean everyday, lot goes into it even with one..”
The above monologue was in response to a series of text messages from a viewer that Pete shared during a recent live feed. This viewer, at 47 years of age, wanted a pet monkey as a substitute child and was asking Pete for help/recommendations. The viewer was given a reply like the above, that getting a pet monkey is not advised. The viewer did not seem to take that response well, and angrily claimed that Pete was a hypocrite for owning pet monkeys yet advising others not to get one.
Monkey vloggers lecturing their viewers not to get pet monkeys and instead live vicariously through them are indeed hypocrites of the lowest common denominator.
Whether these pet monkey owners want to admit it or not, by their very actions of posting videos and pictures of their pet monkeys on social media, they are in fact ‘inspiring’ viewers to desire a pet monkey of their own. Who knows how many of the more than 15,000 non-human pet primates in this country were purchased by viewers watching these ‘cute’ monkey videos. And who knows how many of these primates were subsequently abandoned or turned into sanctuaries after only a short period of time due to their unpredictable wild behaviors?
What’s particularly egregious about these pet monkey vloggers is that they present a completely false and unhealthy image of pet monkeys to their viewers. They give the false and damaging impression that primates living with humans inside their homes, doing human activities, or just being in the presence of human companions, is completely normal and even safe. Even worse, these pet monkey vloggers give the completely false impression that monkeys can actually ‘thrive’ in such forced environments and live a better quality of life than what they would experience in the wild.
It just goes to show how delusional these pet monkey vloggers especially Pete truly are. He gives off this smug vibe that you shouldn’t get a pet monkey because you couldn’t hope to work as ‘hard’ as he does maintaining his pet monkeys (as if he deserves some special praise or recognition for what he does). That you shouldn’t get a pet capuchin monkey because you don’t know how to relate to them as a species as well as he can. In a previous live video feed, Pete was practically anointing himself as the second coming of Christ by inferring that what he was doing with his monkeys was deserving of the highest accolades.
Next time you see monkey vloggers like Pete humble brag about all the ‘hard work’ they put into keeping pet monkeys, next time you see monkey vloggers like Pete self-congratulate themselves as monkey guru/experts, just remember that monkeys are wild animals and should never be kept as pets. Even with all their so called 'expert' knowledge about monkeys and 'hard work' and 'love' maintaining them, these pet monkeys still show sings of severe dysfunction.
Despite what many think, monkeys are not and never have been ‘domesticated’ unlike pet dogs and cats. When you see these pet monkeys seemingly acting “chill,” it is because they have been stripped of their monkey humanity to become shells of their former selves (Stockholm syndrome of the worst kind). These pet monkeys were purchased from the shady world of the exotic pet trade in America, monkeys that were unfairly taken from their mothers as an infant in order to be exploited. Monkey vloggers like Pete deserve no ‘praise’ whatsoever for having pet monkeys; monkeys under their ‘care’ are in no way shape or form living a ‘better’ life than if they were in the wild.

2024.06.08 04:11 thefluffyfarmer123 Shadow croc (first story)

It was a late after noon, I was heading to my job at the gas station circle k in Ohio. My name is Charles Jason. I’m not allowed to tell you exactly where my job is located but this station was old, we barely had anyone visit and it was my night shift. I was alone with just the cook and tasked to make sure the old food was thrown out in the dumpster, but I didn’t do that exactly. I would throw out one bag of it but I had a secound one I take to me to the pond behind the store maybe a mile away. My coworker would take over the cash register when I was gone and would throw old meat or buns into it, making sure not to drop the bag. Your probably wondering why I would throw food into the water instead of just throwing it away i had a good reason, you see a year ago when I started this job I had no friends or pets and I would always come here in my day shift on my 30 minute break. My boss said the moment I got here my shift would start and I was happy for that, one day a tiny baby croc came out of the water and I noticed it was a bit darker then the ones I see on tv or magazines but I was almost more shocked There was a crocodile baby in Ohio! Ohio am I right? But I noticed he has red eyes and it was chirping for its mother, my guess was a guy got it as a exotic pet and instead of just giving it to a zoo or animal control he dropped it into the water. I stared at it and just toss it a piece of my lunch meat and it gobbled it right up, poor thing must of been starving but also it seemed to look at me. For a moment I thought I saw gratitude in its eye as it went up to my foot and laid on my shoe, I was actually surprised it showed any sort of gratitude. I continued to eat my lunch but share with it any scarps, when my break was almost up I had to throw a chunk of my bread into the water and he scurried to it. When I went back to my shift I was told by my boss I got night shift with John. The chef and I didn’t mind him since he gave me free food for my break, during the year he helped cover for me since every night I got out of my way to feed the poor baby. I never saw him again but he still ate the food I gave him, at one point I was just sitting at the pound enjoying the stars when I saw two bright red eyes sticking out of the water. Like a shadow with eyes, I knew it was him cause I’ll never forget his gratitude. I decided to call him a cool name like shadow croc, since he was like a shadow. But I had to get back to work before he could come out, I regretted that cause when I came back the next night I saw he was out of the water, but I saw his foot prints and tail in the mud….. but that’s when it was strange… they where massive… like.. very massive, his feet where larger then any croc prints I saw on the magazines or online. The closes to them where ancient crocs but even then… I still left him the food this time I made sure to give him the whole bag. Cut back to today and I saw him again, he was the same size with the eyes and watch me, I decided to sit down and pat my legs.
“Come here boy, come here shadow croc.”
I would say to him and he did, he came right out of the water but before he fully could he rushed back in when I heard foot steps. Coming towered me and I saw three of the local gang members walking up to me. I knew what was gonna happen as they pulled out two pistols as the third had a metal bat. Threatening me to kill me if I didn’t as I quote “ring out my pockets” and I couldn’t help but hold a chuckle at their slang. But I have nothing on me so I pulled out my pockets showing I had nothing, I guess they didn’t like that cause it’s their turf and told me I was just useless to be around here and pointed their guns at me. I was horrified to think I was gonna die, tell we all heard a very deep growl from the water, the members looked as I knew what it was I looked and shadow croc was at the bank of the water half way out as he was growling. The gang member would scream saying.
“What the goddamn hell is that?” “Is that a damn monster?!” “Man I told you I needed more then a gun!!”
I saw them point their guns backing up a shadow got out of the bank, I finally got a good look at him, he was probably 11 feet tall, his body was bulky looking as well as his feet leaving a print into the ground. His back was covered in large spikes and his hands where almost human looking but claws and webbing made them completely different from a humans, his tail was also large as well with spikes at the tip. The gang members would open fire right at him and all the bullets would hit him on the chest, stomach or head but they all would bounce off or get stuck to his skin. He would roar right at him and I’m telling you he was not slow, he charged right at them grabbing one of their arms and ripped it right off his shoulder joints tossing the arm away as his tail slammed into a the bat guy stomach before he went for a wing, his Spikes stabbed the man in the stomach and swung him on it away to the ground hard. The last guy was able to reload his gun and open fired point blank to his head, like always the bullets didn’t even bother him but they got stuck on his head as well falling out of his head. He then opened his jaw grabbing him and had him in it. But he look at me like he was concerned for some reason and just pulled the guy out and squeezed him tell I heard his ribs cracking and tossed him down. If your wondering why he chose not making him a lunch my guess was he didn’t want the taste of blood… I think he enjoyed the food more then actual meat or blood. He looked at me as I just slowly stepped up and I reached up to him, he actually kneeled down letting me petting him like I did a year ago. He made a noise I can describe like a car engine, I never realized just feeding him only junk from circle k was enough to make him grow this much. But I knew it wasn’t since deer came around this area, how else would he eat when I couldn’t feed him everyday? He then ran back to the pound, I looked around and made a 911 call telling the police I found three men on the ground badly injured dying. It took the police a hour to make it here and all three men where dead, I didn’t question why it took them so long cause it’s ether traffic or the cops they signaled where a hour away. Other wise they where shocked to find the carnage in front of them, I was questioned and I gave them the best answer I had.
“I found them this way officer, I heard gun fire and found them, I think they where attacked by a crazed knife men or groups of them.”
The cops hight my story and continued on, ever since that day I kept feeding him as I still did every week but one night, he left…. I think he finally moved on, I know cause he left behind his trail leading to the forest. I never knew where he went but I know he’ll always be my friend and I hope he’s doing ok where ever he is. ————— Hello! I found this sub of the Reddit cause I love listening to lighthouse horrors. It inspired me to start making monster stories and I thought I’d mostly do this one as a continuation, have him travel the world meeting and or fighting other crypts. If you like this story give it a up vote and maybe some day light house well read this short story. If you have a idea on who he meets or fights let me know! I might be gone for a while or pop up with more stories who know!… thank you for reading!.

2024.06.08 03:50 Appleaddictt Little snack break!

Little snack break!
My poor Marnie was diagnosed with a tumour on her chest (inoperable) but she’s doing so well!! This was taken as we sat in a vet ER for 8 hours. 😢 We shared some bird seed I keep in my car as a snack for random critters around the 4 hour mark.
I’ve gotta say it was incredibly heart breaking watching every other pet (with the same acuity) be seen and have several people in the waiting room they would either let her die or that they didn’t understand why they wouldn’t see her first. I work in healthcare I understand triage and I asked several times if she was stable we could keep her appt the next day with a proper exotic vet, but until hour 8 they wouldn’t entertain a second assessment to make sure she was stable until the next day (which she was). Anyways the point of this ramble, thank you to each and every one of you who continue to keep good care for your hamsters and educate others. You all make a difference in making it a better place out there for hamsters. So someday they won’t be so neglected and ignored, keep it up! ❤️

2024.06.08 03:45 BurningCharcoal How can I carry my pet bird in the train with me?

Hi,
I recently rescued a bulbul over a week ago, little girl is doing fine, and eating well, but due to some circumstances, I have to travel from Lucknow to Delhi. My mother is travelling with me, therefore we cannot keep the little bulbul ( Mili ) at home as nobody else is there.
I'll be travelling via Shatabdi. I want to know what is the procedure to travel with a pet bird. I searched around on the internet and found Parivesh Portal, but that portal only has exotic birds listed, mine is Pycnonotus jocosus ( Red Whiskered Bulbul ) which is not there.
Does anyone have any idea what is the procedure? I would really appreciate it.
Thank you!

2024.06.08 01:22 Proud-Solid-6117 I don’t think that’s in your scope of practice…

Last night made me question if pursuing nursing is the right thing for me. Im supposed to start classes in the fall but last night really shocked me. I work as a certified veterinary nurse and veterinary technician specialist in emergency & critical care. I’ve worked with exotics, large animal and small animals (cats and dogs) Last night I had a nurse present her dog for a pyometra. Typically in an ER setting, we recommend surgical intervention so we can avoid sepsis if it ruptures. I discussed the surgical estimate with her and when I was done, in the most serious face, asks me if she can monitor her pets anesthesia so she can cut on cost. I probably stared at her for a good 5 seconds and responded with a simple “no”. There is more to what was said and done but that just shocked me the most. After going back and forth with the estimate for several hours, she agreed to move forward with the procedure. As I had a coworker take her in, she insisted she needed to be in the surgical prep area so she can “guide” the other techs on how to properly surgically prep her dog then she insisted she needed to be in the OR so she can also make sure they were monitoring appropriately.
Is it me or is there something human nurses feel the need to shit on veterinary staff? My coworkers all went to school to be credentialed and most of them have 5+ years of experience. While there are certain similarities, vet med and human med are separate entities. I respect what I don’t know but after last night, I don’t know if it’s just common to reach outside of your scope of practice and feel entitled to a space you don’t belong in. I don’t feel comfortable with that and it’s just left a sour taste in my mouth. Are all nurses like that? It’s just made me question if I should even go into human nursing.

2024.06.07 22:39 DrJIhatereddit Pet stores are horrible

Went to a pet store yesterday and I don't know if I ever wanna go to to the exotic pet section again. Small enclosures, uneaten prey insects rotting in water dishes, lizards with skin rests on their feet, axolotls with missing limbs (how does that even happen???), fire newts in a little plastic box full of water in a normal terrarium.
And of course many inverts. Adult T's in small plastic boxes with nothing but dirt, or big terrastials in 20×20×30 exo terrariums dangling from the mesh up on the ceiling without any substrate to dig or space to walk.
I almost bought a tarantula or a jumping spider out of pity, but I didn't. They're an item. If I buy one, another one will just end up in their place and that's just the hardest part for me to accept honestly. I felt so bad for every animal. It's still messes with me.
I know everyone here is aware of this but I needed to vent to people who are aware of this and care.
On the contrary though, I also had some very good experiences with some stores, having impressive setups and people working there who know their spider stuff. I got a G. pulchra sling in one of those, and one of the employees even asked me out on how I wanna keep it. He was trying to see if I could keep the animal and if I did research before getting the T and that should always be the case when people buy animals in a pet shop.
But yea the big majority of them are awful and they make me feel awful.

2024.06.07 21:00 GentlemanlyAdvice The Completely True Story of How a Filthy Gweilo Married the Most Beautiful Girl in the World

I was a damaged person. But I was on the mend.
I had a pretty traumatic break up with my childhood best friend, turned girlfriend. I had known her since we were 8 years old. We had been boyfriend and girlfriend since we were 13 and had been so for 9 years until my junior year of college when she cheated on me in a very cruel way. It came to light that she had cheated on me many times before as well.
I loved her so god damn much! I thought we were one of those stories where two souls were knitted together from eternity to eternity, or some hallmark card bullshit like that.
I was emotionally shattered and it took me a while until one day about 2 years later, I woke up and thought about her, but then realized that I hadn't thought about her at all the previous day. It was glorious and I knew then that I was on the mend. After that, my healing process sort of exponentially snowballed and I was back in the saddle as far as relationships went. I started going on dates and meeting up with women.
I was a software engineer working for a large corporation. Because I was good at my job, and because I didn't have a family, I was given the opportunity to move to Singapore and lead a project there for what would be a couple of years but turned out to be 7 years.
The great thing about Singapore is that they speak the "King's English" when they're not speaking "Singlish" (a patois of mostly English with funky grammar, but with Malay, Chinese, and Hindi thrown in). So I didn't have to learn a whole new language to fit in. I just had to learn how to translate Singlish to English, which wasn't too hard after a couple of months of trying. I even learned the lingo and it would amuse my coworkers a whole lot when I spoke Singlish. They thought it was hilarious.
I was a good looking guy (still am!!) but I really let myself go in my depression. I was a tall, muscular 210 pounds when I broke up with my ex, but I had ballooned up to over 300 pounds. I started a workout regimen and lost it all but the workout regimen became sort of an obsession. It was the one thing that grounded me. After I went to Singapore, one of my business perks was a gym membership at "Fitness First", a local gym franchise. I was down to my previous weight, but I had to practically camp out at the gym because the best thing about Singapore is the FOOD. The food is incredible! However, you WILL pack on the weight if you don't get your ass to the gym.
The meet cute
I was working out one day much later than normal due to some overtime on my project and I saw a girl on a treadmill. The treadmill was the one I usually use because it was in the back and kind of out of the way. The girl was stunning! The thing that stuck out to me was that she was had her hair in a pony tail through a ball cap, which is a look I find very attractive. I was a little nervous because, even though I was fairly confident about the way I look, I was definitely batting out of my league with this girl.
I went to her and chatted her up after she got off of the treadmill. She didn't look me in the eye and didn't really engage. I figured that I had acted like what is now known as a "gym creep" and I figured it was a "swing and a miss!" I apologized and said I wouldn't bother her anymore. I stuck out my hand and said "I'm OP, by the way. What's your name?"
She hesitated and looked at me for a bit and said "Lilly" (not her real name).
I remember this exactly because she later said that it was what intrigued her about me. At the time, she was an actress/model who had done some print/public billboard type ads, product demo booths at expos, and even a bit part in a local tv (Mediacorp) series. She had started to attract public attention because of these (mainly the TV show and the ads that were hanging all around town at that time) not just from men but from women too and it was super uncomfortable for her.
The fact that I had no idea who she was relaxed her and made her think that I was attracted to her for her and not because her face was everywhere at the time. After she told me about it, I did notice her face everywhere. But photoshop was a thing even back then, so I didn't recognize her from her ads and I really don't look at ads, tuning them out. I also didn't watch her TV show because it was in Mandarin Chinese and I don't speak or understand any Chinese, and I wasn't in a position where I was required to attend or arrange trade shows.
In the years prior to meeting me, Lilly had undergone a lot of plastic surgery (breast, eyelid, facial contouring, nose job, lipo, etc). She said it got to where she didn't recognize herself in the mirror and it disturbed and depressed her. She hadn't particularly wanted the surgery but she got the procedures done at the behest of her family who wanted her to bring in more money and the people in charge of her career development (don't know the term). It was all very expensive and she felt like she owed her family and the talent people who managed her.
Later, I found out that she hated the public recognition. Not just from men, but mostly from women who were really catty about her plastic surgery. The people in charge of her were pushing her to start singing but she didn't have a good voice and would need a bunch of training for that. She was depressed due to not recognizing herself in the mirror any more and didn't want to follow the career track that she had been on. They were pushing her to do more figure/body modeling which was why she was in the gym. She was SUPER uncomfortable with that and constantly hungry and pissed off.
She was afraid that she would do some more modeling and then get married off by her parents to some rich mainland Chinese man that she would be ambivalent about (she preferred Caucasian men) and she'd be forced to be a traditional pampered Chinese wife living in Beijing.(Doesn't sound that bad to me. Some of those Chinese businessmen live crazy luxurious lifestyles.
Since I was working a lot of overtime, I kept going to the gym later at night and we saw each other and I would wave and smile and she would smile and wave back. OK I was kinda hoping to meet her regularly. I spotted her on a couple of exercises and we began to chat with each other a bit. A couple of times I had to steady her because she was fainting from being hungry and working out at the same time. I used that as an excuse to take her out to a hawker center, which like a mall food court but with delicious local food (not chain restaurants). We chatted and got along really well. It became a regular thing until I confessed I had a crush on her. We started dating after that until it got to a point where she practically moved into my place.
She, of course, had her share of guys interested in her. She was on livejournal at the time (remember livejournal??) and she was doing that and posting pictures of herself for her career mostly, but I'm sure she did enjoy the attention. She had one guy from Belgium who was really after her. He actually bought her 800 thread count sheets, which is an oddly practical but vaguely inappropriate gift. He actually visited Singapore on business (he was a tech sales guy) and wanted to meet up with her in a public place, a hawker center. I still had trust issues from my previous "love of my life" betraying me. To this day, I cringe at my behavior at the time, but I laid down a clear boundary. She could absolutely go see and hang out with this guy if she wanted to, but if she did, she'd be doing it as a single available girl and we would be through. She said she saw my face "turn to stone" and it was clear that she would lose me if she went to meet up with that guy. That honestly gave her pause about our relationship and she really considered ending it at the time. I didn't know that until much later, though. Certainly, I'm glad that she didn't. She didn't go meet up with the guy. To this day, we call the incident "The Belgian Waffle". OK so I call it that, she thinks it's stupid.
Meeting her family
Eventually, Lilly asked if I could have dinner with her parents, saying that they wanted to meet me. I bought some gifts, basically Japanese cookies in really nice packaging, and then we met. I did the traditional thing and formally introduced myself and asked them about their family and history.
At the time, Lilly got some criticism from her extended family because I am a white guy. There was a certain stigma attached to local girls who liked white guys. They called those girls "SPGs" which stands for "Sarong Party Girls", a derogatory name for the prostitutes who would entertain British expats at after hours parties "back in the day".
Over the next few months, I won over her family mainly by eating their food and being accepting of their culture. I grew up in Texas, so pickled jalapenos were common in my house...like salt and pepper, we put them on everything. Later on, I was the kind of guy who put tabasco or sriracha on everything. So eating their spicy food was no problem for me. I remember us both going shopping at an open air market and seeing an older woman cutting up cili padi. I asked if I could try some. She looked at my pale face and then at Lilly and she said I could. I bit into one and chewed it up as the woman looked at me with an amused look on her face. She was waiting for me to jump up and down with fire shooting out of my mouth, I guess. I disappointed her, but she and Lilly were impressed. She later told her mother and she was impressed too. She wanted me to eat one for her as well. Oh well, trained monkey time I guess.
The real test came when I tried Durian for the first time. This is the same food that "defeated" Andrew Zimmern, the "Bizarre Foods" guy. I actually liked it. I had a D24 durian, which admittedly is like the "beginner version" of durians. There are like 16 different types. When you get past the smell and actually taste it, it doesn't smell that bad any more. It's very sweet and creamy. It's like the taste overwrites your disgust of the smell. I think that's what really impressed them to an extreme degree. They started calling me an "egg", because I was "white on the outside but yellow on the inside."
I would visit her grandmother with her. In true Chinese fashion, Lilly and her brother Johnny were raised by their paternal grandparents while their parents worked full time jobs, so her grandmother was like her mom. She was in an elder care facility at this point, though. She didn't like living there, but it was all they could afford. We would visit her every week and she'd be very happy. She didn't speak any English at all so she and Lilly would just chat speaking Hokkien Chinese while her grandmother would pet my hairy forearms like I was a dog. She was absolutely smitten with my hairy forearms.
Meeting my family
After a little over a year, I took her back to Texas to meet my family. It was quite the culture shock. Lilly was amazed by red barns and hay bales, black and white Holstein cows, things she saw in movies about the USA. She particularly was impressed by the cluster mailboxes lined up on country roads ("So cute, leh!") We actually had to stop the car and take pictures of her standing next to them, smiling goofily for the photo. I made sure to take her to the Texas hill country during spring, when the hills are covered with soft green grass and festooned with bluebonnets, sunflowers, indian paintbrushes, black eyed susans, daisies, etc. I had to practically hold her down to keep her from picking them. It's not illegal or anything, it's just frowned upon and tradition to leave them alone. OK, I let her pick some. Give me a break, I was in love with the girl.
Driving was also something that kind of boggled her mind. Texas is huge, and traveling from my parents' place to visit my brothers and their families was a seemingly endless trek. Driving from Houston to Austin, to Corpus Christi was crazy long, even with the stops to visit my relatives.
Lilly was practically agoraphobic at the big sky in Texas. She was used to being in a forest of tall concrete and steel buildings, with only strips of blue sky available at the top. In Texas that sky went from horizon to horizon. She was also amazed at the uncountable numbers of stars at night away from the city lights. She later told me it was like visiting Narnia or something.
In Texas, she got her share of looks from guys, especially in the bigger cities. I wasn't jealous. I've never been a jealous guy, although my experience with my ex "love of my life" really put my radar up, I still was proud that other guys were attracted to her. My attitude was "go ahead and eat your hearts out, she's with me!"
When she met my oldest brother, it was like a cultural thing with her, so she was very deferential and respectful. I knew that my oldest brother was attracted to her because he was stumbling and stuttering when he was speaking to her, looking at her but kind of avoiding looking at her. I wasn't too concerned because he was a married guy with 2 sons and not a scumbag, but it was still pretty amusing to see "Mr. Smooth-don't-let-em-know-you-want-em-kid" at a loss for words.
My parents met Lilly finally (she was super nervous but she did really well) and later my mom brought me aside and asked me if she should re-set her mother's diamond engagement ring. I thought about it a bit, and then told her "yes". My mom's eyes started sparkling with images of unborn grandchildren and she smiled bigger than I had ever seen her smile (kind of unsettling actually). My dad later brought me aside and basically told me I couldn't do any better and I would be a "god damn fool" if I let her get away from me. I agreed. My dad then told me something that remains with me to this day: "She will make your life sparkle, son." (she has).
Before our time in the US was up my mom gave me the ring and I asked Lilly to be my wife in a field of wildflowers, which had become her favorite place to be in Texas. She said yes. Looking back, that was one of the happiest days of my life. It was up there with losing my virginity to "the love of my life" (who turned out to be a duplicitous crazy person but at the time it was really special), my wedding day to Lilly, and the births of our children.
The Engagement
When we got back to Singapore we had to pretend we weren't engaged because I had to ask her parents for their daughter's hand in marriage. I spoke with them and explained how my prospects in my career were good. I told them that I loved their daughter and that my family also loved their daughter. We had to schedule a phone call between my parents and her parents.
I had clued my parents in as far as the traditions go. In Chinese culture, the groom pays for the wedding rather than the bride. The groom also has to give the bride's parents certain auspicious gifts. My parents luckily had done a tour of China a few years before and knew all of this beforehand, having befriended their local tour guide who was saving up money for his own wedding at the time. On the call, they agreed upon a pinjin, which is basically "betrothal money". We started to plan the Guo Da Li ceremony which would take place in 3 months time, and 3 months before the wedding.
Unfortunately life threw us a curve ball and Lilly's grandmother died. It was bittersweet because, while Lilly missed her, her grandmother had become very old and infirm to the point where her quality of life was pretty low. All wedding stuff was put on hiatus until the funeral was over plus 100 days for mourning.
After that, we were able to do the Guo Da Li ceremony. I gave my future in laws a red packet of money plus special cakes and 12 mandarin oranges and gold jewelry. It all went very well.
Wedding planning started in earnest. I got some money from my dad (who insisted) but the lion's share was out of my pocket. During this process I was able to meet some incredible people. The stand outs were Richard and Jimmy. Rich and Jimmy were tailors and dressmakers. They were a couple and they gave my fiancée a really good deal on a wedding dress and cocktail dress if she agreed to do some print modeling for their business. They also made me a tuxedo and a suit. I offered to model for them as well and we all had a good laugh at that prospect (OK they were doing most of the laughing - ego still hurts from that one, guys).
The venue we were using was Chijmes. It's the same one used in the move "Crazy Rich Asians". It was back when they had first started offering it up as a venue so it wasn't crazy expensive at the time. Plus, it was a smaller venue for weddings. Usually weddings are held in large hotel ballrooms and are huge affairs (this is what I was told). The families both invite everyone they've ever met to come: Neighbors, business contacts, everyone. They all bring red packets filled with cash. We opted for the "small" wedding.
The Bachelor Party
We had planned bachelobachelorette parties on the same night (separate venues). Lilly's MOH threw hers while Rich and Jimmy threw mine. My best man was my dad (because he's the best man that I know) and so cigars and brandy would have been disappointing to my work friends and my future brother in law and cousins. I don't think anyone was prepared for what happened.
We had the party at the sushi restaurant of a friend of Rich and Jimmy's. It was after hours. We had some incredible sashimi and rolls. I even tried fish sperm. Didn't like it. I asked Jimmy are you sure it's FISH, sperm?? He said of course he'd never do that to me. To be fair, it did taste and smell very fishy. I don't know how human sperm tastes like (or maybe I do now, I don't know).
After the sushi was done, it was time for the entertainment, and oh boy. Rich and Jimmy hired a trans entertainer who sang show tunes. The thing is, she had an incredible voice. She was obviously biologically male, but she really carried herself with a lot more femininity than I've seen from biological women. She sang and told jokes and roasted me pretty thoroughly. My dad was there and he thought it was funny as hell. My friends from work, especially the Aussies and Brits, thought it was great, my future BIL and most of my future cousins did too. Other cousins politely excused themselves and left. I think the free flowing booze and beer kept most people there, though.
After her thoroughly entertaining performance, it was time for the dancers. This is kind of where it went off the rails. Rich and Jimmy hired exotic dancers...but they were all male or trans. Now, to be fair, it wasn't like they didn't tell me about it beforehand. They did. Personally, I thought it would be hilarious to announce that the strippers were here and then have male dancers come out. I have a twisted sense of humor, I suppose. I certainly wasn't going to cheat on the most beautiful woman in the world mere weeks before our wedding, so prostitutes and female dancers were completely out of the question for me. They jokingly suggested male dancers it and we laughed. I thought about it a bit and I guess I'm "take-the-joke-too-far" guy so I encouraged it. Lilly knew about it and thought it was funny as well and wanted me to video tape it while it happened. ("Yeah right you just want to ogle the dancers" "Of course, lah!")
What I wasn't prepared for was the PLATOON of banana hammocks that marched out into the restaurant. Smooth greased up Asian chests everywhere! My dad was of course shocked at first and then looked at me and we started laughing and the ridiculousness of it. My dad stood up and clapped his hand on my shoulder and put a mock serious look on his face. The people immediately around me witnessed my dad telling me that he loved me and accepted my life style choice and that nothing I could say or do would ever change the fact that he and mom loved me and accepted me. Thanks, dad. I was laughing during the whole thing and my future BIL and work buddies who were around me were laughing as well. My dad excused himself and said he had to go find my mom and tell her the "bad news about her future grandchildren" and left ("Can adopt, lah! Can surrogate, meh!" Thanks for the support, guys). My future BIL laughed and said that since all of the available male dancers were at my party, there were none available to attend his sister's party, so she was "safe".
Among the highlights of the evening is that I discovered that a few of my co-workers and future cousins were in fact gay. I was told to stay out of the ladies' room no matter what. I wasn't planning on going in but thanks for the warning. I was proud that we all only vomited in the trash cans and not on the floor (what a waste of some damn good sushi....and fish sperm). Rich and Jimmy stayed next to each other all night. I even saw them holding hands and looking at each other lovingly. To my shame, I was under the common misconception that all gay men were very promiscuous and I kind of expected them to pair off with the dancers. What I saw that night was a very loving monogamous relationship.
The Wedding Day
The day of the wedding came a few days later and I had the good fortune of being the first one in my family to experience the fun and interesting experience of a groom going through a Chinese-style wedding. I say "Chinese-style" because while we did do a lot of the traditions from a Chinese wedding, we did say vows to God before a Christian minister. This was something she insisted on as her family had converted from Taoism to Christianity (but still kept the Taoist traditions and festivals).
First up was the gatecrash. I went over to the her family's apartment and the MOH and bridesmaids stood at the door refusing to let me in unless I gave them $9999.00. Nine is a significant symbol to them. It means "longevity" I think. So the whole idea is for me to haggle the price down by doing challenges and games. I had to do a handstand and walk with my hands. I had to answer trivia questions ("What is her nickname for you?" "Cranky old man" "What is your nickname for her?" "Baby"). BIL and I had to do "the worm". I haggled them down to $99 which I paid to them in a red packet. My BIL and wife chided me for not going lower but my dad was there and was in his 70s and couldn't do any feats of strength.
After I "secured" my bride, we did the traditional tea ceremony with her parents and my parents. Lilly was dressed in a traditional red silk qipao, tailor made by Rich and Jimmy. I gotta tell you people, the qipao really does it for me! Not gonna lie, it was like cupid gut punched me when I saw her dressed in it . My parents were pretty stoic throughout but my mom sympathy cried with Lilly's parents when she tearfully did the tea ceremony with her mother and father. We received red packets from each set of parents. I was told the red packet her parents gave us had most of the bride price we paid in it. Her mom gave her her grandmother's jeweled antique watch and my mom gave her a sapphire ring (sapphire is my birth stone). As we left her home to go to Chijmes, I told her "we're keeping that dress, understand me??" She laughed.
We got to Chijmes, did the photos and she walked down the aisle in a beautiful white dress with a small train behind it with sequins on it. My dad gave me the ring. He was my best man. He was my best man because he's the best man I know. After the wedding, she changed into a champagne colored strapless cocktail dress another Rich and Jimmy original. THREE wardrobe changes, people! THREE! All with different hair and make up and she did it super quick. I don't know what wizardry was invoked but we may be indebted to the hoary netherworld.
We honeymooned at the Fullerton Hotel. The old British colonial Post Office was converted to a luxury hotel in 2001. We stayed there for 3 days ordering overpriced room service ("Go to hawker center, lah! Much cheaper better food, meh!).
Emigration and Immigration
So a little bit before this time, a little event happened in New York. You might have heard about it. Anyway because some sexually repressed incels decided to murder thousands of people, USA's immigration was all jacked up. The INS went bye-bye. Then we had the BCIS for a brief moment, followed by the USCIS. I saw that my project was ending and my company helped me with her immigration. It was a pain, though. It seems like we had new forms to fill out every week while the old ones became obsolete. That's how I remember it, anyway. It was a pretty frustrating time and I almost had to leave her behind (it wouldn't have been permanent but it would be a long time). Luckily we were able to make it time.
For explanation purposes, we didn't get LEGALLY married in Singapore. We had the religious ceremony but no "government contracts" were involved. This is because, at that time at least, it was easier to bring over a fiancée than a wife, for some reason. So Lilly was a "90 Day Fiancée"!! We got married at the county courthouse when we finally were able to go to my new project. We didn't wait 90 days. We did in three (jet lag).
Unfortunately for her, we moved from Singapore, a 24 hour international class city, to a sleepy seaside town in the USA near a military base. Lots of fun was had with that. A total fish out of water story for another time (What is this "coin laundry"? Do you Americans have a place to wash your coins?).
My BIL got married to a beautiful girl and moved to Australia and opened a Bait and Tackle store in Surfer's Paradise on the east coast of Australia. He has 2 daughters. In 2012 he was caught cheating on his wife and lost everything. She moved back to Singapore with his kids, and he kind of struggled for a while. He got another bait and tackle store eventually and tries to see his daughters whenever he can. They don't have a good relationship.
Rich and Jimmy celebrated the decriminalization of homosexuality in Singapore in 2022, but they still can't get married. We still talk from time to time. Writing this, I find myself missing them. I had some really fun times because of them. I've never had better conversations in Singapore than with them while at Lilly's dress fittings (and my suit fittings).
We have been married for 21 years. She has never given up being a Singaporean citizen. She keeps her passport current. She's a "permanent resident" here in the USA. We have three kids, two boys and a girl. We are still married. She still wears her hair in a pony tail with a ball cap when she works out. She still wears that qipao on special occasions, which I try to achieve as often as possible. She's still my Baby and I'm still her Cranky Old Man.
Thanks for reading.
