WHAT IF timeline pitch starring Magneto…

2024.05.15 05:01 GoblinPunch20xx WHAT IF timeline pitch starring Magneto…

There were Jewish Freedom fighters in WWII. WHAT IF Magneto escaped the camps and joined them, or was liberated by them? His powers would develop earlier and he would be seen as a young hero, rather than appearing later as an embittered antihero or villain. He might not meet Xavier in the same way, but he wouldn’t oppose him for the same reasons either. If his abilities needed time to develop further before he fully became Magneto he could use guns and knives as a freedom fighter. He could even meet Captain America and get a chance to “Sock Hitler in the JAW!” (Or straight up murder him, or Baron Zemo, someone like that). Magneto being a public figure fighting for good during the War, putting a face to both the plight of the Jewish people and the role of Mutants in modern society, it would go a long way towards actually helping Xavier’s goals, by taking an active protective and defensive role, and possibly prevent Magneto from becoming the thing he hated and feared most, a radicalized Supremacist. He could wear the white and black and gray Krakoan era suit and be a good guy, or maybe he’d go bad during the Civil Rights era of the 60’s and 70’s going “too far” in his efforts (but the reckoning of the American Government) to defend othered groups, not just mutants, leading to a class / race based Civil War or Avengers vs X-MEN where the US Government is like “Cap, go put this guy away,” and Captain America is like “I do what’s right Mr. President (Nixon) and this isn’t right” and so an alternate version of the Thunderbolts is formed, and the fighting results in Xavier being paralyzed, Magneto forming Asteroid M or Genosha, and Mutants facing the Registration Act, but in the 70’s. X-Factor is formed as a Government Liaison team, like a mutant oversight task force. The team consists of several members including Forge, Sabertooth and Mystique, who play both sides by inventing tech and taking out hits on the leaders of anti-mutant hate groups and monitoring the progress of the SENTINEL program. From his base of operations, Magneto recruits mutants into his Brotherhood, including Wolverine, who leads a 70’s version of X-FORCE. In this Timeline, Magneto is more of a good guy, and Logan is less of a good guy, so they balance out. The X-Men still operate out of West Chester NY led by Cyclops, Angel and Jean Grey. When she becomes the Phoenix, she gives birth to Nate Grey and Rachel Summers, who inherit the gift of the Phoenix from her, sharing it between them. At some point Apocalypse rises as the big bad, and Jean joins him, turning Rachel into a Hound, and infecting Nate with the Techno Organic Virus. Cyclops becomes a Horseman and Wolverine blinds him, but is unable to kill Jean. Angel, now Archangel and the Horseman of Death, impales Wolverine with 1,000s of his little wing blades. Jean floats down to Logan and weeps fiery tears, holding him. There are BAMFs everywhere just BAMFin around bein’ silly little gremlins. Nightcrawler comes outta nowhere and stabs Jean (and Logan) through the heart w the Muramasa blade. Magneto goes toe to toe with Apocalypse and wins, the Big A takes the L, accepts defeat. Magneto, Emma Frost, Banshee, Nightcrawler, various other surviving mutants re-establish a base on Muir Island, founding eXCALIBUR and training the young mutants of an alternate Gen X team. 100 issue run, or several seasons of a show. That’s my pitch.

***Prices are subject to change.

How to Pick the Right Air Purifier. Things to consider

Consider the Pollutants You Want to Target:

  • Allergens: Look for a purifier with a True HEPA filter, which captures particles as small as 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen, and pet dander.
  • Smoke and odors: Opt for a purifier with an activated carbon filter, which tackles smoke, cooking smells, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Bacteria and viruses: Some purifiers use UV light or plasma ionization to kill airborne pathogens. However, their effectiveness and safety for long-term use are debated. Consider these features supplemental, not a replacement for true HEPA filtration.
Choose the Right Size for Your Space:

  • Air purifier capacity is measured in Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). Higher CADR indicates faster air cleaning in a larger room.
  • The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) certifies CADR for smoke, dust, and pollen. Look for a CADR rating that covers your room size for the target pollutants.
  • A general rule: Choose a CADR at least 2/3 the square footage of the room. For example, a 300 CADR purifier is suitable for a 150 sq. ft. room.
Think About Noise Level and Energy Efficiency:

  • Air purifiers run continuously, so noise level is important. Look for models with decibel (dB) ratings that suit your preferences. Lower dB indicates quieter operation.
  • Energy Star certified purifiers use less energy, saving you money on electricity bills.
Additional Features to Consider:

  • Replacement filter costs: Factor in the cost and frequency of filter replacements. True HEPA filters typically need replacing every 6-12 months.
  • Smart features: Some purifiers offer Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing control through apps for scheduling, filter monitoring, and air quality checks.
  • Auto mode: This feature automatically adjusts fan speed based on air quality sensor readings.

What are the Benefits of Using Air Purifiers

Breathing clean air is essential for maintaining good health, and air purifiers offer a powerful tool to improve the quality of the air you breathe indoors. Here are some key benefits you can experience by using an air purifier:

  • Improved Respiratory Health: Air purifiers significantly reduce airborne pollutants like dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke. This can be especially beneficial for people suffering from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory issues. By removing these irritants, air purifiers can ease congestion, coughing, and difficulty breathing, allowing you to breathe easier and experience improved overall respiratory health.
  • Reduced Allergens and Dust: If you struggle with seasonal allergies or dust sensitivity, air purifiers can be a game-changer. HEPA filters effectively capture allergens as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. This can significantly reduce allergy symptoms like itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing, leading to a more comfortable and allergy-free living environment.
  • Relief from Pet Dander and Smoke: Pet dander is a common allergen for many people, and air purifiers with HEPA filters can effectively remove it from the air. This can alleviate allergy symptoms triggered by pets and improve overall indoor air quality for pet owners and non-pet owners alike. Additionally, air purifiers with activated carbon filters can help reduce smoke particles and odors, providing relief for those living in areas with wildfires or those exposed to secondhand smoke.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Clean air plays a vital role in getting a good night's sleep. Allergens and pollutants can disrupt sleep patterns by causing congestion, coughing, and difficulty breathing. Air purifiers can help by removing these irritants, creating a cleaner and more comfortable sleeping environment. This can lead to deeper, more restful sleep, leaving you feeling more energized and refreshed in the morning.
  • Reduced Risk of Airborne Illnesses: While air purifiers cannot eliminate viruses and bacteria entirely, some models with additional features like UV light or plasma ionization may help reduce their spread. Combined with other measures like proper ventilation and hygiene, air purifiers can contribute to a healthier indoor environment by potentially reducing the risk of airborne illnesses.

2024.05.14 18:17 LaceyBambola Skorri goes in for a biopsy tomorrow

Skorri goes in for a biopsy tomorrow
My girl Skorri has a little wound on her back leg that won't heal.
It's been there since November and would improve, then worsen, then improve, worsen, repeat. Veterinary wait times for appointments have been long!
We finally had our dermatology appointment and she is fairly certain it's metatarsal fistula.
Apparently this is a rare issue that typically only affects German Shepards and she's only ever seen it one other time in her career(on a German Shepard).
It's a type of autoimmune issue and we're doing the biopsy to check if there's any underlying/deep infection as treatment requires immunosuppressents so her body stops attacking it and we want to make sure she's clear and healthy before starting.
All of her cytology cultures so far show that it's sterile, no bacteria, nothing fungal, no virus, etc, but we need to go deeper to be sure.
It seems some pups with this issue need to go on immunosuppressents for life to prevent it from coming back, and some others only need it temporarily to get into remission
Skorri has idiopathic epilepsy and its been a roller-coaster journey to manage that, so I'm really hoping she won't need to go on immunosuppressents for life.
🤞🏻

2024.05.14 14:44 pnw5ever Norovirus Post-Colonoscopy

Hi there. Apparently the norovirus this year is showing to last anywhere from 3-14 days. Prime time for spread was during colder months (Dec through Feb) but I have seemed to contract it now, in early May.
I had been traveling through an airport a few days before contraction and I’m pretty sure that’s where I got it. What’s interesting though is the timing and also that my family has not contracted the virus despite interacting closely with me prior to us realizing this wasn’t food poisoning. But my norovirus are textbook, I don’t have any doubt it’s not that.
I did get a colonoscopy a few weeks back. I’m wondering if it’s possible that I contracted norovirus so late in the season and none of my family members managed to because I had a weakened microbiome due to having had the colonoscopy? It’s well documented in the research that colonoscopies wipe out your gut, particularly bacteria that defends against pathogens, and don’t restore until 2-4 weeks post procedure.
Don’t know if it’s a ludicrous hypothesis (I’m no expert lol) but interested to hear thoughts.

2024.05.14 14:04 EgonSchiele91 Differences: ALZ-112 vs ALZ-113 & Administered vs Inherited

I am just now watching this for the first time. I started with the most recent reboot and am now about halfway through Dawn. Pardon me if this is an obvious question. Hopefully no major spoilers from those answering. Please let me know if this is answered later in the franchise and I just need to be patient.
What's the difference between the different ways of apes gaining intelligence? I feel as if in the first movie, they made a big deal about administered alz-112 (to bright eyes) vs inherited ALZ-112 (Caesar). In that, Caesar gained intelligence whereas bright eyes had their intelligence restored to the peak of a regular ape.
And then they made a big deal between the inherited ALZ-112 vs the administered ALZ-113. One is much more of an aggressive strain.
Questions I've been pondering: 1. Is Caesar the only ape with the effects of both 112 and 113? Does that make him smarter? I feel as if since he only spoke after 113 was administered, that 113 did increase his intelligence. But the question is, does 113 have a compounding effect with 112 or is 113 simply more potent? 2. If ceasar is smarter than bright eyes, does the trend continue? Will his offspring be smarter than him? Is Caesar the smartest ape of his generation as he's the only one who inherited this as opposed to having it administered? 3. 113 is described as more aggressive. Does it make the apes more aggressive? Does 112 have some sort of tempering effect on emotional regulation?
I have no idea where the series is headed, but I like this line of questioning because of how I think it could unfold. 1) If inheriting the virus leads to additional intelligence, then the next generation will always be smarter. Additionally, Caesar's family line will always be one generation smarter as the first ape to have inherited the intelligent. 2) if 112 and 113 has a compounding effect and/or 112 somehow tempers violent tendencies/emotional reactions, it would also mean that Caesars lineage has another advantage.
So I'm wondering if this will lead to a future where the 112 lineage are the leaders of society? And/or a future where the 112/combo and 113-only lineages are warring factions: one believes humans should be slaves and the other believes humans be free. Or some defining fault line similar to that.
Anyways, excited to have found a new science fiction fandom that has caught my imagination and thought I would vomit my thoughts into Reddit and see what everyone else thought!

2024.05.14 10:13 prmssnz The logic of grid-down medicine

Last week in a post-deleted by the OP, there was discussion about how there is no point in stockpiling antibiotics and any attemps for lay people to practice any form of health care in a widespread grid down disaster was a waste of time
Myself and some colleagues wrote: Survival and Austere Medicine
Edit. New link. in a post below.
We are slowing working on a 4th edition with some new material and minor corrections - but it is taking longer than we thought!
But I thought given the above post, I would take the opportunity to post the introduction - which address the "why bother" question for a major long-term grid down situation. Apologies for the formatting and length
"There is a sense, when considering the issues around survival medicine practice, that everything is overwhelming, that it is impossible for lay people to provide a high level of medical care and maintain a high level of population health.
We don’t think this is the case at all. We believe that intelligent lay people with some basic medical knowledge, skills, and equipment can deliver high quality health care. While it is obviously impossible for lay people to safely and competently deal with every medical problem, and there remain many complicated diagnoses requiring equally complicated or technologically advanced treatments, for 80- 90% of the health problems afflicting humanity, simple things done well are all that is required to preserve life and limb and help alleviate suffering.
Consider the following:
1. Remote Medicine Practice:
Below are the results of one of our author’s experience in the provision of health care in various remote and austere locations (some third world, some first world) to nearly four thousand people over a cumulative 30-month period (spread over 18 years) – with more data there are few minor changes from the 2005 2nd edition, but the list is essentially the same – which is interesting. The record keeping was a bit unreliable at times, but the following summary is reasonably accurate.
Top 20 presentations (representing > 95% of consultations):
1. Minor musculoskeletal injuries - ankle sprains most common, included many minor fractures which didn’t require more than diagnosis and simple care
2. Upper respiratory tract infections
3. Allergic reactions/Hay feveAnaphylactic reactions/Rashes
4. Minor open wounds – included a mix of lacerations needing closure, many needing
cleaning and advice only, and some infected wounds
5. Gastroenteritis/Vomiting/Diarrhoea
6. Mental health problems
7. Sexual health/Contraceptive problems
8. Skin infections/Cellulitis
9. Dental problems
10. Abdominal pain - 4 confirmed acute appendix (2 treated with IV antibiotics and
subsequent delayed appendix removal / 2 required evacuation) + 1 gangrenous gall bladder. Many were "no cause found". Of the remainder with a clear diagnosis the most common were renal or biliary colic)
11. Fever /Viral illness
12. Chest infections
13. Major musculoskeletal injuries (fractures/dislocations)
14. Asthma
15. Ear infections
16. Urinary tract infections
17. Burns – mostly partial thickness within the realms of management in the environment the
patient was in. Several required evacuations. Several required rehabilitation due to location and sub-optimal initial treatment.
18. Chest pain
19. Syncope/Collapse/Faints
20. Early pregnancy problems
Major trauma was uncommon but was seen including several fractured femurs and a dozen cases of multi-system severe trauma resulting in a mix of in-country surgery and evacuations
Top 12 prescribed drugs (representing >90% of medications prescribed):
1. Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)
2. Loratadine (and other assorted antihistamines)
3. Diclofenac (and other assorted antiinflammatories)
4. Combined oral contraceptive
5. Flucloxacillin
6. Throat lozenges
7. Augmentin (Amoxycillin + clavulanic acid)
8. Loperamide
9. Nystatin (and other antifungals)
10. Hydrocortisonecream
11. Ventolininhalers(Salbutamol/Albuterol)
12. Morphine
What is of note here is that the clear majority of problems dealt with are simple and straight forward – there is still potential for serious consequences but there is scope for a well-informed lay person with a basic knowledge and access to a reasonable collection of reference books to provide reasonable care. Equally the vast majority of medication prescribed are from a very narrow well defined list – despite the fact 1000’s of drugs are on the market – the list of core lifesaving or comfort preserving ones is relatively brief.
2. Why children die
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified the following conditions as having contributed to >75% of worldwide deaths in the under 5-year age group (in no particular order):
Pneumonia Pneumonia is an infection of lungs. Prevention of this condition is somewhat limited – although good nutrition, clean and warm housing, and a reduction in the exposure to respiratory irritants (smoke) all can help. However, the most common bacteria which cause pneumonia are frequently sensitive to penicillin – which is discussed later in the book and can be produced in a low-tech environment.
Diarrhea Death from diarrhea (dehydration) is almost 100% preventable with appropriate use of oral rehydration therapy. Dirty water or poor food handling causes much diarrhea – this can be virtually eliminated by proper hygiene practices and care with drinking water.

Pre-term delivery While we are limited in the direct interventions available in an austere environment to mitigate this problem contributing factors to early labor are young age, malnutrition, smoking, poor maternal health, so there is scope for indirect intervention based on optimizing mum’s health and environment. For babies who are born prematurely the necessities of life are warmth and breast milk. With attention to detail for both things, it is possible for infants as young as 33-34 weeks to survive without high-tech intervention.
Malaria. Prevention is better than a cure, knowledge about clearing stagnant water, mosquito nets and long sleeved clothes can significantly reduce the risk. Equally quinine is derived from the bark of the Chincona tree and the Chinese have been using the herb, Artemisinin, effectively for the treatment of Malaria for years. So, while not as easy to treat or prevent as diarrhea, there is still scope for significant reduction in death rates in low-tech ways.
Blood infection Blood infection or septicemia is rapidly fatal. The ability to intervene depends on the cause of the infection and antibiotics available. Broadly, infections causing septicemia can originate from the skin, the lungs, the kidneys or bladder, and the abdominal contents. While specific treatments for these may be lacking in an austere environment – all have prevention strategies and basic low-tech treatments that can be lifesaving when applied appropriately.
Lack of oxygen at birth Of these problems, this is the one with probably the least scope for impact. Unfortunately, even if foetal distress is detected during labor (with heart beat monitoring or signs of distress like meconium), without the ability to deliver the baby quickly options are limited. That said, a caesarian section is not a massively complicated operation (and discussed in Chapter 10), and in parts of the third world is performed by trained lay people with safety and success.
Measles Again, there is limited scope to intervene directly with the disease. Measles is always around and while vaccination reduced the incidence of epidemics, sporadic cases still occur. In the absence of vaccinations epidemics of measles every few years will be inevitable. There is however some scope to minimize the spread during an epidemic with isolation and respiratory precautions during outbreaks. While some of the serious neurological complications are unavoidable in a
Prevention is better than a cure, knowledge about clearing stagnant water, mosquito nets and long sleeved clothes can significantly reduce the risk. Equally quinine is derived from the bark of the Chincona tree and the Chinese have been using the herb, Artemisinin, effectively for the treatment of Malaria for years. So, while not as easy to treat or prevent as diarrhea, there is still scope for significant reduction in death rates in low-tech ways. small number of patients, basic care such as maintaining hydration can also prevent complications such as dehydration.
Neonatal tetanus The prevention of neonatal tetanus is easy. You don’t let the site where the umbilical cord attaches to the baby get dirty. It is as simple as that.
HIV/AIDS Prevention of maternal infection is the key to prevention of infection of newborns. The steps required to prevent exposure to the HIV virus are widely known: abstinence (not undertaking sexual activity), monogamy (maintaining a single sex partner rather than multiple) and if neither is a palatable option, then safe sexual practices.
Most the conditions above have an element of either preventability or the ability to be treated to some degree in an austere environment and significant improvements in mortality and morbidity can be made.

3. The greatest advances in medicine
Several years ago the British Medical Journal ran a poll trying to identify top medical advances of the last 200 years. The following is the top 12 from that poll:
Sanitation 1st Antibiotics 2nd Anaesthesia 3rd Vaccines 4th DNA 5th Germ theory 6th = The oral contraceptive 6th = Evidence based medicine 8th Imaging 9th Computers 10th Oral rehydration therapy 11th Smoking cessation 12th =
Just as with our discussion above about the causes of childhood deaths, this list is introduced to show just how much impact a very basic health care knowledge can have in terms of optimising health in a post-disaster or austere situation.
Of the biggest advances of medicine in the last 200 years, between 7 to 9 (depending on your knowledge and available resources) of the 12 can be applied to care in a austere situation. In particular, the knowledge of sanitation, germ theory, oral rehydration therapy, and simple manufactured antibiotics and anaesthetic agents all have the potential to be able to be continued to be applied in a post-disaster situation and to continue to contribute to a high quality of low-tech health care. In the same way that we can substantially reduce childhood death rates in a low tech post-disaster situation, we can still continue to have access to some of the biggest advances in medicine even at the end of the world.
4. Surgery in the third world
A non-specialist surgeon working at a isolated bush hospital in Papua New Guinea published his experience of Emergency Surgery over a 14 month period (similar articles have been published with similar data):
Emergency Surgery 243
Tendon repair 33 Open orthopaedics 32 Dilation and curettage 31 General surgery 29 Incision and drainage 26 Laceration repair 26 Obstetrics 23 Manipulation under anaesthesia 15 Urology 15 Gynaecology 9 Ear, nose and throat 2
Emergency anaesthesia 243
Ketamine – spontaneous breathing 166 Local anaesthesia 33 Ketamine – ventilated 16 Spinal anaesthesia 12 Propofol / thiopentone 10 Epidural 5 Epidural / GA 1
The point of this reference is to help illustrate what someone can achieve in primitive conditions with no formal surgical training and no dedicated anaesthetist. We are not suggesting that the average layperson can safely practice to this extent or breadth of surgery, but it does demonstrate that a non-surgeon can achieve much. It also shows that most anaesthetics for surgery in an austere situation can be done under local or ketamine anaesthetics.
Why this is relevant?
Each of these four references gives you insights, one way or another, into low-tech austere health care. First, it gives you an insight into the likely clinical problems that you may see in a survival situation, and how much can be dealt with in that sort of austere environment. Second, it demonstrates how medically speaking it is the small things and simple knowledge which save lives and some of the biggest killers can be mitigated with these relatively low level interventions or strategies.
In our opening summary – “Medicine at that end of the world”, we describe a pretty bleak medical reality post-SHTF. Will million’s really die from lack of access to modern heath care as we have alleged?
The short answer is yes – many will die much sooner than they otherwise would have, from disease and injury, which currently are not immediately fatal. But the answer is not nearly that simple nor bleak. The reality is that while cancer, diabetes, malnutrition or serious injury may claim many of its victim’s sooner than with today’s health care, most health problems can be treated or mitigated to a degree in a low- tech environment, with a narrow range of medications and interventions – including some cancers, non- insulin requiring diabetes and many major traumatic injuries.
Most medical problems are relatively mundane and not life threatening. Truly catastrophic problems in medicine are fortunately rare. You should focus on learning and preparing to deal with the common problems, and doing common procedures well, and you will save lives, and possibly also improve the quality of those lives.
There will be a significant change to health care but with knowledge and some preparation it isn’t quite as dire as many (including our own opening paragraph) predict. "

2024.05.14 09:12 paul_h Should we be skeptical about "immunity debt" despite it being a widely agreed with

This sub has discussed "immunuty debt" a few times: https://www.reddit.com/skeptic/search/?q=%immunity+debt%22&type=link
Theory is that infections of various viruses/bacteria/fungi (airborne, droplet deposition onto surface subsequently smeared into eyes/nose/mouth, fecal-oral, other food-borne) give you a statstically significant benefit against subsequent infections of the same thing. Related concept is "herd immunity" which at one was mostly used in conjunction with vaccination programs, but has also more recently come to be short-hard for "herd immunity through infection".
The vast majority of people I encounter that go on to share their thoughts on thois largely agree with these ideas. A major component of their argument is that lockdowns specifically harmed because of preventing people (kids being key in their discussion) from being infection at some usual rate. 2024.05.14 08:47 Hot-Communication-41 Mayer EMI MD900 vs Access Virus TI2?

It is pretty surprising to find very little feedback and opinions on the MD900. After checking out a demo of last firmware (https://youtu.be/U4oy7WskIx8?si=BNq04EEMcHSIR-je), I am considering it.
I have a bunch of gear I am considering flipping and wondering if this would be worth flipping a Peak and Virus. I also have Summit and Iridium so not sure if MD900 would overlap but has potential to cover different territory with its sampler engine.
Thoughts?

Exploring the Environmental Impacts of Reverse Osmosis Systems: Unveiling the Hidden Costs
Introduction
Reverse osmosis (RO) systems have become increasingly popular for purifying water, promising clean and safe drinking water. However, behind the veil of purity lies a less discussed aspect - the environmental impacts of these systems. In this article, we delve into the hidden costs associated with reverse osmosis systems, shedding light on their environmental consequences.
Understanding Reverse Osmosis Systems
Before delving into the environmental impacts, let's first understand how reverse osmosis systems work. Allstar Water Systems specializes in RO systems designed to remove impurities and contaminants from water. Through a semi-permeable membrane, water is filtered, leaving behind pollutants, minerals, and salts, resulting in clean drinking water.
Visit us at https://allstarh2o.com/ or call us at (888) 777-3777.
Advantages of Reverse Osmosis Systems
Reverse osmosis systems offer several advantages, making them a popular choice for water purification:
  1. Removal of Contaminants: RO systems effectively remove a wide range of contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and dissolved solids, ensuring safe and clean drinking water.
  2. Improved Taste and Odor: By removing impurities and chemicals that cause unpleasant taste and odor, reverse osmosis systems enhance the overall quality of drinking water, providing a refreshing taste.
  3. Compact and Space-Saving: RO systems are typically compact and can be installed under the sink or in confined spaces, making them suitable for residential and commercial applications where space is limited.
  4. Cost-Effective: While the initial investment may be higher compared to other water filtration methods, the long-term cost-effectiveness of RO systems lies in their low maintenance requirements and reduced need for bottled water.
  5. Customizable Filtration: Allstar Water Systems offers customizable RO systems tailored to meet specific water quality requirements, allowing customers to address unique purification needs effectively.
Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis Systems
Despite their advantages, reverse osmosis systems also have some limitations and drawbacks:
  1. Wastewater Generation: As mentioned earlier, RO systems generate wastewater during the filtration process, resulting in water wastage. Allstar Water Systems acknowledges this issue and continues to explore solutions to minimize wastewater production.
  2. Removal of Beneficial Minerals: While RO systems effectively remove contaminants, they also strip water of beneficial minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Allstar Water Systems offers remineralization options to address this concern and restore essential minerals to purified water.
  3. Energy Consumption: The energy-intensive nature of reverse osmosis systems contributes to carbon emissions and environmental impact. Allstar Water Systems is committed to implementing energy-efficient technologies to reduce the environmental footprint of its RO systems.
  4. pH Imbalance: Purified water from RO systems tends to be slightly acidic due to the removal of alkaline minerals. Allstar Water Systems offers pH balancing solutions to ensure that purified water is safe and balanced for consumption.
The Environmental Toll of RO Systems
While reverse osmosis systems provide clean water, they come with a significant environmental cost. Allstar Water Systems, like many providers, utilizes energy-intensive processes to operate these systems. The high pressure required to force water through the membrane demands substantial energy consumption, contributing to carbon emissions and environmental degradation.
Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint
Allstar Water Systems acknowledges the energy-intensive nature of reverse osmosis systems. The constant operation of pumps and motors consumes a considerable amount of electricity, adding to the carbon footprint. As consumers strive for cleaner water, they inadvertently contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.
Waste Water Generation
Another often overlooked aspect is the generation of wastewater during the filtration process. For every gallon of purified water produced, Allstar Water Systems generates several gallons of wastewater containing concentrated contaminants and pollutants. Proper disposal of this wastewater poses environmental challenges, especially in regions with limited water resources.
Impact on Aquatic Ecosystems
The discharge of concentrated brine into water bodies poses a threat to aquatic ecosystems. Allstar Water Systems acknowledges the importance of mitigating this impact and implements strategies to minimize harm. However, the cumulative effect of widespread RO system usage can disrupt the balance of aquatic environments, affecting marine life and biodiversity.
Resource Depletion
In addition to energy consumption, reverse osmosis systems contribute to resource depletion. The production of membranes, essential components of RO systems, requires significant amounts of raw materials, including plastics and chemicals. Allstar Water Systems recognizes the need for sustainable practices and continually explores alternatives to mitigate resource depletion.
Addressing the Environmental Concerns
Despite the environmental challenges, Allstar Water Systems remains committed to providing clean water solutions while minimizing ecological impact. By investing in energy-efficient technologies and exploring sustainable alternatives, the company aims to reduce its carbon footprint and promote environmental stewardship.
Environmental Considerations in Reverse Osmosis Systems
While reverse osmosis systems offer undeniable benefits in water purification, it's crucial to examine their environmental implications comprehensively. Allstar Water Systems acknowledges the importance of balancing water quality with environmental sustainability and actively addresses key environmental considerations associated with RO systems:
  1. Energy Efficiency: Allstar Water Systems is committed to enhancing the energy efficiency of its reverse osmosis systems. By investing in energy-efficient pumps, motors, and membranes, the company aims to minimize electricity consumption and reduce its carbon footprint. Additionally, Allstar Water Systems explores renewable energy sources such as solar power to power its RO systems, further mitigating environmental impact.
  2. Waste Reduction: Recognizing the challenge of wastewater generation in RO systems, Allstar Water Systems implements strategies to reduce waste and maximize water recovery. Advanced water recovery systems and brine concentration technologies are utilized to minimize wastewater discharge and optimize resource utilization. By reducing waste generation, Allstar Water Systems minimizes its environmental footprint and promotes sustainable water management practices.
  3. Material Sustainability: Allstar Water Systems prioritizes material sustainability in the design and manufacturing of its reverse osmosis systems. The company sources environmentally friendly materials and components, minimizing environmental degradation throughout the product lifecycle. Additionally, Allstar Water Systems explores alternative materials and recycling initiatives to reduce resource consumption and minimize waste generation.
  4. Lifecycle Assessment: Allstar Water Systems conducts comprehensive lifecycle assessments of its reverse osmosis systems to evaluate their environmental impact holistically. By analyzing the environmental footprint of each stage, from manufacturing and operation to disposal, the company identifies opportunities for improvement and innovation. Continuous refinement of product design and manufacturing processes ensures that Allstar Water Systems delivers environmentally responsible water purification solutions.

2024.05.14 04:56 LeGrandLucifer Poteau de la semaine: COVID-19: Post-mortem

J'aimerais faire un petit post-mortem de la pandémie avec vous. Premièrement, je vous lie ceci:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

2024.05.14 02:48 Average_Boi_4879 ZomDrones Those Unturned A2C3: Four Strangers

Morris stayed hidden for days, of course he wasn’t the only one left behind. A burned drone who would not wake up, a student named Kerr, and a drone seemingly losing all touch with reality named Luther. They barricaded the room of the patient, and stayed in there for weeks as the room was well off the beaten path. One day, Kerr asked “So what are your stories?” when there was nothing to do. “I was part of the WDF at one point, as I was part of the military grade drone experiment. The others left me to die, but I didn’t and now here we are…” said Luther. Morris decided now was a good time to reveal his crimes, “I was part of a test of drone software stability against viruses, unfortunately I never regained complete stability. The parts of my software that were for sympathy and morals were corrupted, along with a thirst for violence appearing… have you heard the stories of the drone named Morris? That’s me, and most of them are true… I also killed several drones here. I was gonna torch the bodies but the undead stopped me, and the events up to here were (Go read the last couple chapters except for Fade to Gray).”
[Malkor hosting enabled] I saw the shocked expressions on their faces, and smiled slightly… I then told them of the transmission I got from the teacher. “What’s your story Kerr?” I asked calmly, knowing very well the free oil supply that was the burned drone wouldn’t speak. “Well… I was studying to reinforce the doors, and also founded a little group called ‘Delta Company’ which basically was enforcing military restrictions on the other students…” I cracked up, “Alright we got a drone in white plaster, a fascist, Yossarian, and a psychopathic killer… well this should be a great group for Delta Company.” Kerr rolled her eyes, “Sure, it didn’t become a thing because the zombies had to show up… also you and your friends lit up most of the members and the others… well you can probably guess what happened to them.” I thought for a second, “What’s stopping us from rebuilding it? I mean we can head to the dead zone, which is in need of leadership anyway, and start recruiting people and drones.” Kerr snickered, “Well if we even survive this bunker…” Luther was seemingly able to comprehend what we were saying, “I could be security…” he said off handedly. “I probably won’t join you though, I’m already a member of a faction in the zone.” I lowered the neck of my shirt to reveal a tattoo on my shoulder, two sideways Vs intersecting each other. “Well, it never hurts to have an ally… especially with the Invisibilia.” The sound of banging on the door was heard, considering the somewhat frantic banging along with the smell of gasoline it’s probably Uzi and N. “Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the enhancements that came with the software corruption… I can alter the perception of reality to an extent.” I got up and started to bend reality just a bit, and slung my AK over my shoulder with a tire iron in my right hand. They gave me good luck or rather, the illusion of Morris good luck.
This will probably be a good test to see if those undead feel fear, or have some semblance of their old selves in there. My intuition of N and Uzi being at the door was right, and I try to hit them through the crack of the door. After getting them off I use my schizophrenia giving powers to their fullest extent, I alert V of my presence but that is subsided by the hesitation to come close. Apparently they do feel fear from me, now let’s see if they have memories. “What’s wrong N? Couldn’t deal with having to fight your girlfriends? You’re almost as pathetic as Nori… correction moreso, you just had to steal the kill from me.” This of course sends Uzi into what I can only describe as shock, so that answers that. Either way I turn all of them into slices of swiss cheese, however the bunker is still full and the others opt to leave the injured drone behind as their practically dead weight… no matter, for the dead won’t stay down for long and we have to keep moving. I stare in disgust at Uzi, a painful reminder of my past… I would spit but drones physically cannot (unfortunately?). No matter, through the forest the three of us unturned go…
We make it through the forest, and into the dead zone. Thankfully I was not exiled, and rather went outside on a significant purpose (which I will not disclose as of current), and Kerr immediately runs off to go recruit the entirety of the refugees of the outside to Delta Company. She’s off and away, then me and Luther are left to our own devices… Luther goes and wanders off, possibly to get drunk on coolant though I wouldn’t judge him for doing so. [Morris hosting restored] I walk over to one of the Invisibilia hideouts in order to communicate all the shit that went down within the past week, and considering I think in English I’ll transcribe the conversation afterward in English; “Hey P4! Why the hell didn’t you kill the admin while you had the chance?” said a Russian colleague of mine, “I have a name you know… also that fucking bitch would probably have gotten the upper hand, that surprise you fleshbag?” did I just call him a slur for human? Yes, yes I did, but we’re actually on good terms so the insult is very lighthearted, “Yeah Morris I know, you also brought a fascist clanker over here… hope to god they aren’t in a ‘Kill all humans and native drones’ phase”, so yeah we basically shit talked each other. Pretty good considering Copper-9’s only safe space is a dead zone which was more devastating than Chernobyl, but hey that’s better than turning into a zombie right?

2024.05.14 01:31 Withtimecomesgracex Dive into Sepsis: Management Tips, Vasopressor Preferences, and Field Experiences

Lets have a discussion about sepsis.
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by the body’s reaction to an infection. Sometimes referred to as “infection in the blood,” sepsis is a widespread infection that triggers a series of reactions in the body, resulting in the signs and symptoms we associate with sepsis. The most common cause of sepsis is Gram-negative bacteria, but sepsis can also be caused by other bacteria, viruses and fungi. Common points of entry into blood stream include the lungs as with pneumonia, kidney infections stemming from bladder infections, IV sites, surgical wounds and bed sores (decubitus ulcers). Sepsis can affect all ages and patients with a depressed immune response, such as people with HIV or diabetes, and the elderly are at increased risk for sepsis.
When faced with a foreign pathogen, the body launches an immune response to attack the infection. Macrophages and neutrophils are white blood cells responsible for phagocytosis, which is the engulfing of foreign pathogens in the body. They also participate in the inflammatory process by releasing molecules known as cytokines, which trigger a series of other inflammatory mediators, all in an attempt to combat the foreign pathogen. Interluken 1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factors (TNF) are two of the cytokines thought to have greatest role it the development of sepsis.
If there’s a continued toxin release, the above mentioned process goes on unregulated, and sepsis will develop. This process is known as the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), and SIRS in the presence of an infection is sepsis. This process results in systemic vasodilation and alteration of cardiac output due to a decrease in preload. The patient progresses into distributive shock. Signs of sepsis include altered mental status, tachycardia, warm or cool skin, areas of mottled skin, tachypnea and hypotension. By nature of septic shock being a distributive shock, mean arterial pressure (1/3 systole + 2/3 diastole) can drop rapidly, resulting in decreased end-organ perfusion.
With all that out of the way, let's discuss:
1.)What are your go-to strategies for identifying and managing sepsis in the field?
2.)Any particular assessment tools or clinical signs that you find most reliable?
3.)Vasopressor Preferences: In cases of septic shock, which vasopressors do you prefer and why? How do you decide between levophed, epi, and dopamine, considering their different mechanisms of action and side effects?
4.)Experiences/Calls: Could you share any memorable calls where you managed a septic patient? What lessons did you learn, and how have they influenced your practice?
Sepsis management is a dynamic field, and there’s always more to learn from each other’s experiences. Whether it’s a tip that could save a life or a story that could teach a valuable lesson, your input is incredibly valuable.

Aizen vs Kaden (Bleach vs Guardian Tales) ‘To Strike Down Those Above’. UPDATED/IMPROVED CONNECTIONS + update on Aktoruks future

Real Talk, it’s a bit rough, so no shame in scrolling past. Go past the Spoiler warning for the stuff related to the MU.

I’ve kept a lot hidden from my online persona, but I’ll be honest for a moment. Currently, in a separate province, my mom is going for scans. There’s a very real chance that she has cancer, and the thought frankly destroys me.
I’ve decided that I’ll be taking a ‘break’ after this post. I truly do adore this community, but personal things are just not doing great. I wish to avoid the risk of high emotions I am currently susceptible to. I’ll probably be sticking around to lurk at times, but it’ll be low key.
I wished to make something more, and decided that making things smoother for the MU I’m most proud of is a good way to leave things. When I return, I have many more projects planned. Scripts, MU’s, and even Scaling Scans. Look forward to that, while I do the opposite (of looking forward in general, I’m excited for the projects).
Depending on the speed of things, I may know how things go at the end of this week. There are two cases. In the best case, I will be back shortly after this news. In the worst case, it may be multiple months before I return, should I return.
Thank you all in advance for reading, and thank you all for being cool people. It’s been really helpful being able to take my mind off things, and I hope I can continue to make a fool of myself in all the best ways.

Absolutely massive spoilers for both Bleach and Guardian Tales. Only read if you are fine with that.

immediate Basic Core connections
-Villains -Villainous allies -Both From Asian (east) countries -Ancient beings in comparison to human lifespan, but not particularly for their species. -Yes, ‘en’ is the final part of their five-letter names. This is not something that should sell you on the matchup.
In Depth/Actually Good Connections
-Long-term threats in their respective series. Constant presences which utilize the protagonists as tests.
-While among the most powerful characters in their verse, intelligence is what makes them terrifying. Capable of manipulating their way into power, influence, and secrecy.
-Prior to a massive reveal, both are thought to be allies to the ‘good side’ (Captain Aizen and Kaden the Hero), with the few who knew being ancient scientists that got locked away to prevent word from spreading.
-Their major goals involve utilizing an unknown power (Labose and the Hogyoku) which is made via mass sacrifice. Both would seemingly succeed in mastering this power, though it is purposefully left vague if they hold complete control.
-During the process of obtaining this power, both would infect others with a primary ‘disease’ of the series (Hollowfication and L-Bacteria). This includes characters of high power (Several Captains and Lieutenants and A Hero of the Champions Sword + A Dragon).
-Both have purposes for these actions which seem good in a skewed lens (Ending the existence of the Soul King and Preventing the Loop from Continuing). These events both involve a higher power (Potentially the highest in the series).
-But through a regular lens, these plans are fucked ways to handle the issues. This is due to issues with both characters mentality (Aizen was incapable of seeing others as equal to him and Kaden was burdened with hundreds-thousands of his past timelines).
-Their eventual ascension would first turn them into monstrous beings due to their views of power, but would both return to forms close to original at their strongest.
-Similarity in armies. Lorraine and Gin are both ‘right-hands’ with closed eyes, who would eventually attempt to overthrow when the ascension had already begun.
The Arracnars and L-Monsters are beings from the series that were manipulated by the characters. They would accept ‘power’ which allowed them to be either pawns or tests.
-Opposites of their main/orginal world (SS and The Otherside) would be where their plans of action took place.
-Both utilize dimensional rifts to travel.
-They would be defeated by the ‘experimental’ protagonists (Ichigo and The Guardian) which they had kept an eye on with interest to their plans.
-Both would end up aiding the protagonist against a further threat (Ywach and *The Fairies). While it is questionable whether this was simply due to shared interest or a show of empathy, both were ultimately good actions which saved the lives of many. *The Fairies do not currently have an official title.
Contrasts:
-Bisecting/Permanently crippling others was used against Kaden (via Clara), while Aizen used it for his plan (Taking a SK piece from Rangiku when attempting to create a Hogyoku).
-Kaden truly believes himself to be doing a noble thing, while Aizen is aware that what he does is wrong (he just doesn’t care).
-Kaden shows genuine struggle to kill his old allies (Such as Erina), while Aizen has no issues harming his fellow captains and his Squads lieutenant.
Animation Potential:
Kaden holds this back due to GT being incredibly niche. Aizen has a wide variety of both sprite and 2d models to work with (DB has already used a sprite for him). While Kaden only has his ingame sprite, which does not fit Aizen’s.
In their simplest forms, both are not easy draws. In their monstrous forms, Aizen is a little more difficult and Kaden is horrid.
Kaden does have some stuff to work with for creation of a model (plenty of ingame art), but that’s the issue, it would have to be fan-made.
Fight Potential:
-Army fight potential with Arrancars vs L-Monsters.
-End of army battle with Espada vs Laura, Morrian, and the L-Titans.
-Begin in base forms, simple sword fight. Kaden has his staff Repentance and Aizen has his Zanpakuto Kyoka Suigetsu. Both are capable in close-quarters combat.
Aizen will Utilize his Kido for an Advantage vs Kaden’s usage of Ice and Chains.
Kaden takes the upper hand, stabbing Aizen with Repentance. Only for it to be revealed that he was under Kyoka Suigetsu, and killed Clara (or an image of her, at least)
-First evolution: Cocoon Aizen vs First Phase Infected Kaden. Similar fighting style, Kaden focusing more on Chains, L-Flowers, and ice than before.
Honestly, the least interesting part of the fight, as both are similar to the first forms.
The one thing I’ll give this is Gin and Lorraine both attempting to take them out would be best fit here. Gin vs Kaden and Lorraine vs Aizen. They’ll lose, but it gives a path to the next part.
-Second Evolution: Butterfly Aizen vs Second Phase Infected.
At this point both utilize a lot more of their ranged attacks. It’s very much similar to the other evolutions though, just with more monstrous canvas’s.
At this point Kaden has a Labose realm that he utilizes, which can serve as a counter of some degree to Kyoka Suigetsu. Though it has an obvious weakness with the crystals, so Aizen has an actual out.
-Final Evolution: ‘Sealed’ Aizen vs Final Phase Kaden.
Both back to Human forms. Aizen being fused with his Zanpakuto means that it’s now fists vs Sword (Kaden is using the Disgraced Heroes Blade).
Both utilize ranged attacks. Kaden’s storms vs Aizens Kido.
While I’m not sure whether it would technically work, Kaden using a dimension slash to break free of Kyoka Suigetsu would be sick.
-Death: Two ways.
Reaching the end of the fight, both combatants stand to look at each other. For a brief moment, they flash to their ‘good’ forms. Captain Aizen and Kaden the Hero. Perhaps things could be different had their minds been in better spots.
Regardless, should Kaden win, he erases Aizen via Labose. Should Aizen win, he destroys Kaden with a Cero.

Debate:

Note: One thing I wish to do once I return is make a proper and studied look into uni Bleach. I do not think my speed debating did justice to what I’m still certain one. But I need to ensure I’m not on a path without bearing.
This was created with Uni Aizen in mind, and I know it a slippery slope, but this current debate is using that for the sake of storytelling a close fight. I understand that it’s flawed until/unless I come with the proof, but I’ve opted to make this choice.
I will also be using the lower interpretation of Kaden (Universal rather than Mutli or higher). As the debate has an obvious winner in this case, regardless of where Aizen gets scaled.
Win Cons: Unlike a lot of Aizen Matchups, he actually has a loss condition that doesn’t rely on being stat-stomped. Labose has erasure capabilities, proving capable of wiping timelines completely. Kaden will need to weaken/overpower Aizen to manage this, but just in the same way someone would need to for a regular kill.
Kaden is limited in his rebirth, and unlike Aizen, is capable of dying once he reaches his peak. The longer the fight goes on, the better chance Aizen has of landing a killing blow.
I will not be considering the memories stored within the champions sword. While it would be a restoration of the Kaden that fought Aizen, it is reliant on a continuing loop (an outside force). If Aizen kills the body of the current timeline, that is absolutely close enough to be called a victory.
Strength: Aizen takes this due to affecting the three realms (3 Universes) while Kaden only affects 2. It’s close, but Aizen just has a larger showing.
Durability: Same as Strength, as it’s a showing of 3 Universes to 2.
Speed: Likewise, the ability to nearly instantly affect 3 universes is higher than affecting 2, which means Aizen is presumably faster. Both have similar capabilities with dimensional travel and teleportation, so this is actually a close stat.
Experience: Both are centuries old at least, with all being dedicated to fighting or research. But Kaden has hundreds, if not thousands, of loops worth of memories as well. This is a wash for Kaden.
Intelligence: Tie, both not only show incredibly similar cognitive capability, but they both focus on manipulation. There’s nothing to show that either has a notable advantage.
Skill: For use of extended abilities, Aizen’s Kido and Kyoka Suigetsu is far more impressive than Kaden’s ice, chains, and Labose attacks. Kaden is far more impressive than Aizen, due to being a long-term swordsman primarily, and capable of beating primordial sword fighters. I give it a tie, but unlike for intel as it’s because they have a roughly equal amount of advantages, rather than being equal in everything.
Powers: Even with Labose having the potential to counter it, Aizen still has immortality. Kaden also has no good counters to mind fucks. Aizen takes this.
Weapons: I’m treating this as ‘army’, as it’s unfair to include the more power-like Kyoka Sugetsu. Likewise a tie, because Aizen has a more impressive variety of Arrancars, but Kaden utilizes his forces far more effectively. Aizen has no issue killing of valuable allies, but Kaden knows how to make only necessary sacrifices.
Winner: Should we utilize the prior sackings, Aizen wins. He’ll need to be wary of Labose, a power that proves to be a risk to his immortality, but Kaden can’t take advantage of that unless he can get through Aizen’s incredible variety and Kyoka Suigetsu.
All Aizen needs to do is continue forcing Kaden on the back foot, eventually his evolution will peak and a kill becomes possible. Kaden won’t be able to find a victory in 9/10 cases.
With mid-dif (due to Kaden having very possibly chances at victory), Aizen is the winner.

2024.05.13 23:36 lillianrose12 Viral pharyngitis

So, today I went into urgent care for a sore throat that developed white patches throughout the night. I tested negative for both strep and mono. I was told I have viral pharyngitis, instructed to continue taking ibuprofen and to come back if anything worsens. My only question is, I thought if there was white spots/patches in the throat that could only indicate strep throat or some other bacteria. Is it possible for it to just be a sore throat from the common cold or flu, or does the white patches indicate it’s more than that? Probably sounds stupid, but just wanting to ensure what I have is from a virus and not bacteria. Confused why I have white patches if it’s not bacteria.
I am a white 19 y/o female, I weigh 130 lbs and am 5’7 in height. I have no existing medical issues and only take sertraline for depression. I live in WI.

2024.05.13 20:43 oldstrawberryfields hack needs to last like 10-12 seconds and it would buff tanks especially ball.

right now balls biggest issue is that he gets hacked on CD so he can’t effectively get hacked->survive because the second he’s healthy and engages again he will get hacked again bc it’s gonna be off cooldown.
i’m talking about hack duration as a whole not the ability lockout aspect. that should remain the same.
there’s only two things that would buff sombra in this scenario-> she’d be able to see ball through walls during this and her virus would trigger the fast dot on him. however keep it mind that the damage of virus alone is pretty laughable on tanks, and that sometimes its more powerful to virus without hack because the dps passive will keep procing for a longer time.
this would make sombra have to think about when to hack ball instead of just holding m2. it would also help sombra set up different plans vs squishies, actually getting use out of wallhacks and being able to hack, disengage and then engage with virus again
