2024.05.16 01:54 nuvalewa2 Possible Bug? Some clothing recolors are hidden in "design".

I noticed that a bunch of the clothing that exists in "sets" aren't able to be chosen by themselves - despite being remixable. A couple examples that I noticed for me were the red version of the student set (checkerboard shirt, red dress shirt and hakama), and the bankrupt merchant set (white clothes with yellow haori, unlock from the mission with you and the shogun running art errands for consul harris).
I can't choose the individual pieces that I want, but I can choose the whole set and then change everything else around it. These sets are recolors and have other versions that work properly- it just seems like some of the recolor sets really make you work for it if you want to use them for your drip. And it's impossible to use them together - if you want the red undershirt with the yellow haori, you're out of luck, you can only choose one.
Is this just my game? Is there way to fix this? It's super annoying. I've been trying to make a miko outfit, but the red hakama and white robe top are basically mutually exclusive because of this.

2024.05.16 01:47 Aggressive_World4566 have I crossed the line?

TW!!! TALK OF ED AND SH DO NOT READ IF SENSITIVE!!!! recently me and my best friend we will call her Cindy had an argument, of course it was over something dumb and she just said how she doesn't want to talk about it anymore. some background I struggle mentally with the idea of how everyone is better than me at everything and Cindy is the kind of person who always has to win an argument. anyways she ends the argument after I make a good point and I'm still upset over this. so I go onto a secret twt account that she went out of her way to find by key word searching a sc of something funny from my twt account. this isn't the first time me has found one of my secret accounts. Cindy just has this thing of constantly being curious and finding ALL of my secret accounts no matter how hard I try to hide them. so anyways I vented about how I was upset that she was doing her usual if I lose the argument I just don't continue it therefore I'm not wrong kind of thing. of course without my knowledge she sometimes checks my secret twt account without my knowledge and she gets upset of my rant. just the other day I was feeling quite depressed and a lot of self hatred and felt jealous of her so I made a rant on how I was jealous of her love life and how throughout our entire 8 year long friendship everyone prefered talking to her than me examples include how when I made something and we showed it to someone and we told that person I made it they would still assume Cindy made it, or for gym class I would always end up getting picked last out of the two of us, or how the popular girls were nice to her and not me and same with the employers at our job. in the tweet I made I commented wondering why people prefered her over me despite us being very similar bc that's why we are such good friends I personally find us similar in interests and all that kind of stuff. I was jealous of her numerous relationships and how my failed one relationship was a long distance rebound. she saw this as well and took me comparing us to each other as me using her life as "pity points" which was absolutely not my intention. on this secret account I do just so happen to be apart of sh and ed twt and I made a quote twt saying how maybe people will like me more if I was thinner. me and her are around the same weight though she is taller and weighs less than me we are pretty close. she took this comment as a dig at her weight even though in my head it never was ment like that. last night she confronted me on the comments I've made and how upset she was that I would say such stuff and yes it's true I absolutely should've vented my frustrations to someone close to me or maybe just journaled it and not posted about it on twt but it was heat of the moment and I forgot I even posted it the next day. but there have been times where she has vented about me to a person we both mutually hated and we both know how that person also dislikes me which is something I never told her I was upset about, I kinda feel like the only reason we have been friends for so long is simply because I have always just been the person to not confront her about the things she does that upsets me just out of fear of her cutting off our friendship. I have told her about the argument thing and all my other problems but I feel she never remembers that I struggle with these issues. Cindy tells me she wants time apart so she can calm down and for me to work on myself and get help for my sh and ed. the sucky thing is idk if I'm willing to get help, I don't want to get fully into it bc this is already so long but am I the asshole? am I fully in the wrong?
TL;DR bff found my secret twt acc and is upset that I vented ab us on there :(

2024.05.15 23:53 Hopeful_Anxiety7393 Advancing Nursing Practice: A Call for Continuous Improvements

In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, nursing stands as the cornerstone of patient care. As we navigate through the complexities of modern medicine, it becomes imperative to foster an environment of continuous improvement within the nursing profession. From refining working habits to advocating for better resources, here are some examples of nursing improvements worth discussing:
  1. Optimizing Workflow Efficiency:
Nurses often face challenges related to time management and workflow efficiency. One improvement could involve implementing technology solutions such as electronic health records (EHR) or mobile applications to streamline documentation and communication processes. By reducing administrative burdens, nurses can dedicate more time to direct patient care, ultimately enhancing outcomes.
  1. Enhancing Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
Effective collaboration among healthcare professionals is essential for delivering comprehensive patient care. Nurses can advocate for interdisciplinary rounds where physicians, nurses, therapists, and other team members come together to discuss patient cases and develop cohesive care plans. By fostering open communication and mutual respect, interdisciplinary collaboration can lead to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  1. Promoting Staff Well-being:
Nursing is a demanding profession that often takes a toll on the physical and emotional well-being of nurses. Implementing initiatives to support staff well-being, such as mindfulness programs, mental health resources, and flexible scheduling options, can help alleviate burnout and improve retention rates. Prioritizing the health and happiness of nurses ultimately translates to better patient care.
  1. Advocating for Patient-Centered Care:
Nurses play a pivotal role in advocating for the needs and preferences of patients. Encouraging shared decision-making, implementing patient-centered care models, and providing cultural competency training can empower nurses to deliver care that is tailored to each individual's unique circumstances. By prioritizing the patient's voice and preferences, nurses can foster trust, enhance satisfaction, and improve health outcomes.
  1. Embracing Evidence-Based Practices:
In an era of rapid medical advancements, it's crucial for nurses to stay abreast of the latest evidence-based practices. Establishing regular education and training programs, promoting participation in research initiatives, and creating forums for knowledge sharing can help nurses integrate evidence-based interventions into their practice. By aligning care with the best available evidence, nurses can ensure optimal outcomes for their patients.
  1. Addressing Healthcare Disparities:
Nurses have a critical role to play in addressing healthcare disparities and promoting health equity. By advocating for equitable access to care, addressing social determinants of health, and participating in community outreach initiatives, nurses can contribute to reducing disparities among underserved populations. Through collaborative efforts, nurses can work towards creating a more just and inclusive healthcare system.
In conclusion, nursing improvements are essential for advancing the quality and effectiveness of patient care. By actively engaging in discussions and implementing innovative solutions, nurses can drive positive change within their practice environments. Let's continue to strive for excellence, advocate for our patients, and work together towards a brighter future for nursing.

Revisiting the Mystery Valentine (An Overly Long Explanation of Why It's Definitely Gaster)
https://preview.redd.it/vfqpjxdvqn0d1.png?width=3005&format=png&auto=webp&s=5714871c0eb21939d134ffe5f90025eb3f2fc8e3
I'm not sure why I'm still so hung up on this. For context, I kinda fell out of theorycrafting a while ago ā€” at this point, I've seen every shred of evidence supporting or opposing every possible theory, and yet I feel no closer to any concrete conclusions on the game's lore. There are just too many questions, too many possibilities.
Then the secret Valentine dropped. This letter raised a lot of questions I was eager to discuss! Instead, I was disappointed to find the discussion dominated by something I didn't even think to question: the writer's identity. This frustrated me a bit, as I felt that, for once, the conclusion was actually pretty clear-cut; it didn't strike me as something Toby Fox even intended for us to debate.
At the time, this drove me to write a post discussing it (don't bother reading it, this post is better). I thought that would be the end of it for me, but somehow the debate has yet to leave my mind. Even now, from what I've seen, people are too busy arguing about who wrote the letter to discuss what's in it. All the while, I've not only grown more confident in the conclusion I've reached, but I feel more prepared to articulate why. I've also heard more counterarguments since then, which I will address in this post.
I'll start with what we can agree on, before addressing more significant counterarguments and delving into progressively deeper levels of conjecture. Should be fun!

Context and implications

Even before looking at the letter itself, we can see that this is a rare, cryptic secret, already giving us an idea of who might be involved. I'd go so far as to say that Gaster is "rare, cryptic secrets" personified. To me, this is the main thing setting him apart from other characters.
Obviously that's not to say that other characters can't be responsible for secrets like these, but giving the letter a cursory glance, the format doesn't fail us. All caps ā€” this doesn't tell us much on its own, but when used alongside a very, very specific manner of double line spacing between and within sentences, compounded by the aforementioned association with secrets... Toby Fox is clearly trying to tell us something here, so I'm not a fan of any theory that completely discards that.
You'll probably agree with this point ā€” even Gaster Valentine deniers admit that there is an intentional association being drawn. If you disagree... sorry, I don't know what to tell you. When it comes to Gaster, having a mysterious secret with all-caps weirdly-spaced text is basically equivalent to Susie walking onscreen and saying "Hi, I'm Susie". Sure, maybe a plot twist down the line will reveal that this isn't actually Susie... But you'd only suspect that if she says something that would imply it, and for now, we're only looking at the presentation.
There's another association I haven't seen as many people bring up: the fact that the letter is anonymous. Ironically, "not being confirmed to be Gaster" is one of Gaster's identifying characteristics. In every case, we're left to assume his involvement from cues such as those we see here: secrets, crypticism, capitalization, spacing, all that. Anonymity is his signature. By including these quirks and leaving it uncredited, he may as well be signing "GASTER" in flashing letters. And that's not even getting into the implication of Wingdings and the letter disappearing after being read, which are both Gastery as all get out.
A couple minor notes regarding the writer's anonymity:
  • The lack of a telltale 666 motif or gratuitous "VERY, VERY" could be seen as a point of contention, but I think this naturally follows the pattern we've seen thus far: as we grow more familiar with Gaster, there's less need for these kinds of identifying motifs. In Undertale, the name Gaster is directly associated with 666 and Wingdings, but as we already know these connections going into Deltarune, the game's intro more-or-less drops the name and font associations.
  • Notably, this is the only Valentine without a confirmed sender ā€” if it was meant to tease a new character (Ć  la Lanino and Elnina), why not include a visual or first initial to indicate that? Because it's supposed to seem like Gaster, only to end up a red herring...? Seems like a pretty cheap twist to me. Characters have deceived us in the games themselves, but we've generally been able to take supplemental content more-or-less at face value.
Of course, that anonymity is a double-edged sword. It implies Gaster's involvement just as much as it leaves room for doubt. If Toriel does something un-Toriel-like, we simply have to reconcile what we previously knew of her character with what we do now, whereas if Gaster does something un-Gaster-like, it calls his entire identity into question. I still don't think the Gaster associations can simply be handwaved away ā€” again, even Gaster Valentine deniers agree that there's some significance to the similarities ā€” but, by his very nature, it's nothing more than an implication.
If the voice from the vessel creation sequence says something to the effect of:
https://preview.redd.it/lsfu4bxrqn0d1.png?width=514&format=png&auto=webp&s=14867b9e9ea46dfc4f7c7fc91de69c574cab530d
I'll be the first to admit that it probably isn't Gaster. But I don't think that's the case here, and to discuss why, we'll have to move on from the context to the content.

Personality and mannerisms

The obvious problem with analyzing Gaster is that he has yet to be properly introduced, much less developed. We've only ever interacted with him outside Deltarune's story and world, and furthermore only briefly, within a very narrow range of contexts. Additionally, these interactions are written to provide us with as little characterization as possible ā€” he is succinct and direct, never shifting the subject beyond what is relevant to us. This itself could be considered characterization, but without the "why", there's not much to glean from it.
Regardless of whether this trait is dependent on context (there's little room for conversation in a survey program, after all) or is simply an ever-present aspect of his personality, I'd argue it carries over to the letter. He tries to begin with polite small talk, but each topic he broaches is swiftly dismissed; once again, he can hardly bring himself to deviate from "the purpose of the message". Speaking of which, that fact ā€” that this is the only Valentine with an explicit "purpose" ā€” itself provides characterization. Almost as though this character would only contact us for an important reason (perhaps a character with a history of doing so, often outside the game). Almost as though we've met this character before (otherwise, I suspect Toby would've focused exclusively on characterization rather than motives, as with Lanino and Elnina).
I realize I'm getting into full speculation territory now, but hopefully I've made it clear why it's necessary to do so. Gaster's personality and motives are largely up to personal interpretation ā€” I think we can agree that, were that not the case, the debate would be a lot more one-sided. Your interpretation of the character can't be used as conclusive evidence for your theory. Of course, I'm not exempt from this either! My interpretation could be completely off-base as well. That said, I'd like to at least explain why it all lines up in my head. (Feel free to compare my interpretation with his dialogue, which I've compiled here: https://pastebin.com/yR5Y8qhw)
Let's get the specific shared mannerisms out of the way before moving onto the more general similarities. Specifically:
  • Gaster employs a specific kind of repetition, mostly limited to single words, but occasionally multiple ("OF COURSE", "SHALL WE", "THE SECOND"). We see this reflected in the letter ("BELIEVE IT SO", "WANT[ED] TO HELP", "SEEM TO HAVE FORGOTTEN").
  • He alternates between present and past tense when describing what is currently happening (seen throughout the vessel creation and save menu text). The letter writer does this multiple times.
  • Perhaps a generic word choice, but the writer says "HOW ABSURD", much like how Gaster has said "HOW WONDERFUL", "HOW INTERESTING", and "HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN".
There are a couple other things that struck me as extremely Gastery, but I couldn't find many examples for them. I might just be thinking of the stilted way Toby Fox writes in status updates and newsletters, which reminds me more of Gaster than any other character... but that's a tenuous connection at best, so take these for whatever they're worth:
  • The letter writer puts "VALENTINE'S DAY" in quotes. I thought there were more examples of Gaster putting random terms in quotes (it suits his general robotic-yet-whimsical demeanor), but the only ones seem to be the names you enter in the vessel creation.
  • I find the phrasing "THE PURPOSE OF THE MESSAGE" (as opposed to, say, "the reason I wrote this to you") very Gastery ā€” something about the detached feeling and repeated use of "THE" ā€” but the only instance I could find of this particular sentence construction was "CHOOSE THE TARGET FOR THE REFLECTION", so maybe it doesn't mean much.
Moving onto the general personality, the easiest similarity to argue is the metaknowledge. Gaster introduces you to the Deltarune program, and is the only character known to acknowledge it. The letter writer is clearly interested in your thoughts on Deltarune (albeit spelled "DELTA RUNE"; beyond Toby's general inconsistency with minor details like these, I'm not sure what to make of that). The writer also acknowledges the wait between chapters, much like Gaster does ā€” contrasting this, everyone else simply acknowledges the time that's passed within the story, perceiving two real-world years as one night. It could also be argued that Gaster is the only character who has contacted us, the player, directly.
Gaster is also known to be polite and formal, always offering greetings ("WELCOME"), gratitude ("THANK YOU FOR WAITING SO LONG"), and compliments ("YOU HAVE CREATED A WONDERFUL FORM"). We see this reflected quite well in the letter ā€” "AS YOU ARE WAITING PATIENTLY" and "DO YOU BELIEVE IT SO?" certainly don't feel like the words of someone speaking casually. Like Gaster, the writer also uses fewer exclamation marks and contractions than most. Granted, the fact that the writer uses contractions at all is cause for suspicion... but, since they're outnumbered by the uncontracted phrases, contraction usage remains closer to Gaster than anyone else (except Toriel, I guess). Although we haven't seen Gaster use contractions in his few prior instances of dialogue... evidently, he does use them, albeit infrequently.
The formality even goes beyond word choice ā€” his repeated backtracking on the exact order of "PUT ON YOUR COAT AND WASH YOUR FACE" brings to mind his polite accommodation of our choices in the vessel creation or save menu. It doesn't seem like him to forcefully tell us what to do, or in what order to do it, and the letter's ending serves to exaggerate that quality. He may not use any highly technical language here, but that makes sense in this less scientific context (especially when you consider that he doesn't use scientific terminology all that often anyway).
Gaster's constant emphasis on the subject at hand, saying something odd or outright wrong whenever he alludes to anything else (listing the wrong options for whatever he means by "FAVORITE BLOOD TYPE", or listing such favorite flavors as "PAIN" and "COLD") ā€” it's always given me the impression that Gaster's transcendent brilliance doesn't extend far beyond his own work. That's not to say he's stupid, far from it, but definitely a bit "out there" (I feel this much is apparent from the multiple typing quirks he uses). At the very least it feels inarguable to me that, while Gaster is smart, he doesn't know everything, and (like any Toby Fox character) he isn't always intended to be taken 100% seriously.
Casting our gaze over to the letter, this once again checks out. Confusing the new year with the old year, considering himself to be the person he's forgotten, mixing up the recipient's face and coat ā€” these feel more-or-less like a natural development of Gaster's established eccentricity, like the kinds of weird things that would only make sense from his unique, potentially fractured, extradimensional perspective. Sure, "THE TIME IS GOING AROUND" may not make sense to us mortal beings, but neither does "DELTARUNE GLOWS BRIGHTLY FROM YOUR HOPE". Ending a message with the archaic "GOOD BY" feels roughly equivalent to randomly putting [24] in brackets.
The increased emphasis on these quirks makes sense in this more casual context, and adds tonal consistency with the other Valentines ā€” being a spooky creepypasta character is hard work, and I think the guy's earned a day off. The friendliness also makes it out to seem like the writer has communicated with us in the past, which wouldn't make sense for anyone other than Gaster, and certainly wouldn't have made sense in something like the vessel creation sequence. I find that it also makes sense from an extradiagetic perspective ā€” Toby Fox is just providing characterization here, not announcing a new chapter, so there's less reason to write Gaster with as much purpose and brevity as in previous appearances.
Basically, the idea that Gaster is completely serious and grounded while the letter writer is completely goofy... I don't get it. I really don't think either of those things are true. I'm not even sure what I would change about the letter to make it sound more like Gaster... Did you expect less exclamation marks? More line breaks (which would make it overly long and monotonous, might I add)? Less whimsical turns of phrase? At that point the letter wouldn't deepen our understanding of the character at all, and I fail to see what the point would be.
And the idea that the letter ruined Gaster's character makes even less sense to me ā€” for one, what does this letter really establish about Gaster that wasn't already alluded to? I suppose the letter makes him out to be more whimsical than most of us thought, but how is that a downgrade from "static, one-dimensional robotic scientist"? Can "whimsical scatterbrain" and "robotic scientist" not coexist? Is the gradual reveal of depth and contrasts not at the heart of most Toby Fox characters?? The directness of his speech has made him feel more like a plot device up to this point, so this letter was the first time I truly felt invested in Gaster as a character outside of his unique presentation. I don't think "saying things in a casual context that could be construed as humorous" (again, especially when he already says things like "FAVORITE BLOOD TYPE") is enough to consider him "scrunkly goober #78" ā€” and even if it was, Toby has a way of delivering the most emotionally impactful moments through the funniest characters, so I'm not particularly worried.
All that to say: it's my belief that, even looking past the context and format, the letter aligns more closely with Gaster than any other character. Who else has such a formal and cordial composure contrasted against an air of inscrutable strangeness?

Motives and memory

Gaster hasn't exactly been transparent about his goals, and the letter writer isn't giving us a whole lot to work with either, so we're going to have to get even more speculative here. That said, the conclusion I've arrived at makes a lot of sense to me, relates to established elements of Deltarune, and even explains away some people's reasons for this not being Gaster. Those being:
  1. "Gaster asks us for help, even though we've already been helping him!" This is easily explained if we assume he's asking our help with something else this time. The more casual tone and secrecy of the letter supports the interpretation that this is a less generally important, more personal matter; it's the difference between "Hey, if you don't mind, would you lend me a hand with this thing that's been on my mind?" and "I'm subjecting you to an experiment I've spent years preparing, please follow these exact instructions." I suppose it's strange that he doesn't mention how we can help, but I imagine that's something that will become clear in the future.
  2. "Gaster isn't forgetful!" While I'd say it's entirely possible that Gaster has memory problems that simply hadn't been alluded to yet, I find the more likely explanation to be that there's something supernatural at play, and once again I believe this is hinted at in the letter itself. Gaster says it's "IRONIC" that he forgot something ā€” what could this imply, beyond the fact that he was forgotten himself? (To recap the theory, Goner Kid mentions a world where they don't exist, no one acknowledges Gaster outside Fun events, and while Asgore is said to have taken a long time replacing Gaster, it's unconfirmed whether he remembered who he was replacing.) I was 50/50 on this theory myself, but I take this letter to be more-or-less confirmation of it, further tying it to Gaster. The only other explanation I can think of for this "IRONIC" line is that perhaps Gaster makes people forget things...? For the purposes of this theory, it doesn't matter too much, as it establishes a precedence for supernatural memory loss either way. Furthermore, by suggesting the person he's forgotten may be himself, he draws a direct parallel between himself and the person he's helping, lending further credence to this interpretation.
This brings us to my theory. I posit that the forgotten character is someone in similar circumstances to Gaster himself; someone who cannot be found in the story, and is instead associated with secrets outside of it (much like this letter). As an added bonus, it would help strengthen the theory if it happened to be a character who is known to call out for help, and who we've previously been requested to find (particularly in secret material outside of the game, much like this letter). If only there was a character fitting all of those criteria...
But this post isn't about that. My point is, while there's not much to glean in the way of connections between the letter person's goals and Gaster's, I don't think there's anything contradicting such connections either.
https://preview.redd.it/gswysspqtn0d1.png?width=392&format=png&auto=webp&s=248273e7bacc131cf9e9422a0aebdaeeacc6c9b6
Oh. Right, I guess there's that. If this is the same Gaster we've worked with before, why doesn't he say "YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELF TO BE RELIABLE"? I feel like this minor word choice could be justified by any number of explanations. For one, the phrasing makes a bit more sense within the full context: basically "you're odd, but you seem reliable regardless". You could also argue that, since he's asking something different of us this time, we haven't proven ourselves to be reliable for this specific task. Or that since we've only been assisting in the "Deltarune" project for 2 of 7 chapters, that's not enough time for him to fully consider us reliable. Or, maybe the only reason we do seem reliable to him is because we've been assisting him ā€” otherwise we wouldn't seem reliable at all. Heck, it could just be odd phrasing for a character who constantly uses odd phrasing, only misleading under a specific interpretation.

Translation

To recap, I think the context and format convey a very clear implication ā€” one that could be a red herring, but that I believe is only supported by the writer's personality, and (at the very least) not contradicted by their goals. Here is where I believe we come to the first hole in my argument.
The Japanese translation doesn't sound particularly close to how Gaster speaks in Japanese. I don't speak Japanese, so there's not much I can do to back up or debunk this claim ā€” perhaps people are overlooking some of the more minor similarities, as with the English version...? Or maybe there's more nuance to the translation process than most people think, and the writing style is highly adaptive to tone, mood, context, or method of delivery, or affected by cultural differences...? I don't know, so for now I can do nothing but take it at face value, and consider what this inconsistency might imply.
People seem divided into two camps with regards to the translation: "the English version very clearly sounds like Gaster, therefore the Japanese version doesn't matter" and "the Japanese version very clearly doesn't sound like Gaster, therefore the English version doesn't matter". Frustratingly, neither of these actually address the inconsistency. If we assume it isn't Gaster, the English version clearly goes out of its way to mislead us into thinking it is (as I've already justified extensively), so why not do the same for the Japanese version? If Toby wanted to clear up ambiguity by making the Japanese version distinct from Gaster, why not do the same for the English version? Whichever way you slice it, it's a contradiction.
That said, I think there are a few things working in my favor here. For one, English is Toby's native language, as well as the most common language spoken by his fanbase. Japanese translation is handled by a different team under Toby's supervision; they had a lot of Valentines to translate, and likely a pretty strict deadline. It's believable that time constraints forced the team to prioritize accuracy to the content and tone of the letter over consistency with established text quirks.
There's also the fact that the English version is the only one to imply a clear sender (unless you want to reach and say the secrecy and metaknowledge of the Japanese version imply Gaster as well); personally, I feel inclined to believe a deliberate implication over the lack of one. Adding weight to this point, this isn't generally the sort of thing casual fans are going to speculate about ā€” anyone who knows about the letter has likely heard of both versions, which means most will gravitate toward whichever one implies a specific identity. Because of this, the Gaster interpretation seems to prevail even in the Japanese fanbase.
Basically, I don't like that making sense of the letter forces me to either make up an arbitrary narrative explanation for the discrepancy, or to write off either the English or Japanese version as unreliable... However, this decision is made much easier by the fact that, the way I see it, only one of them provides mounds of evidence (from the context to the specific format to the anonymity to the metaknowledge to the formality to the strange mannerisms and so on) pointing toward a single interpretation.

Alternative explanations

I've seen a few other theories regarding the writer's identity, the most common of which being the idea that Gaster was shattered into multiple personalities, and that this is a different "shard" from the one we've communicated in the past ā€” I take issue with any theory that compartmentalizes one complicated character into multiple simple ones, but I suppose it doesn't necessarily have to be done that way. There are also theories that this is the Chapter 3/4 secret boss (associated with Gaster based on precedent), Mike (associated with Gaster through Spamton), or IMAGE_FRIEND (associated with Gaster via filename conventions), some of whom may or may not be the same person.
My main argument against these theories is that I simply don't think they're necessary. To reiterate, I think the whimsy Gaster displays here is consistent with his previous characterization (we've only seen him in scientific contexts until now, and even then a bit of whimsy manages to slip through), and the forgetfulness can easily be explained as well (since it only seems to apply to one subject). Again, the only hole I can find in my interpretation is the Japanese version, and none of these theories really explain the inconsistency there, leaving us back at square one ā€” if it's merely a character associated with Gaster as opposed to the man himself, why aren't the similarities and differences roughly the same in both versions?
These theories don't make much sense to me when I attempt to look at them from Toby Fox's perspective, either. Getting a secret Valentine from Gaster is, technically speaking, like the coolest thing ever, and I think he realizes this. If he's willing to include a secret letter with this much lore in it, why leave out such an important character we've already communicated with? And furthermore, why give a different mysterious character so many of the same characteristics we use to identify Gaster in the absence of his appearance or name?
Also, isn't it telling that the debate seems split evenly between "Gaster" and "a theoretically infinite supply of basically made-up Gaster-adjacent characters"? While these theories could end up being accurate, I don't yet see any precedence for either Gaster having multiple personalities, nor any as-of-yet unseen/nonverbal characters sounding like the letter writer; these theories simply exist to explain a contradiction that I believe isn't truly there. They embody the principle of explosion, or "from contradiction, anything follows" ā€” if you accept that it sounds both "like Gaster" and "unlike Gaster", you can make up anything in between these possibilities, an untouchable theory that can neither be proven by evidence or disproven by counterevidence. I personally don't find that line of thought very compelling.
In the most popular video on the topic, SpookyDood analyzes the letter through cadence, language, context, and function; however, I think something is lost from analyzing these aspects separately. Cadence, language, and function are largely dependent on context. If we accept the letter into that pool of Gaster characterization rather than nitpicking it into oblivion, we simply see new patterns emerge. We see that Gaster only uses particularly large words when he's referring to something scientific. We see that Gaster is slightly more enthusiastic when there's less pressure to be serious and professional. Basically, I feel that all of the inconsistencies SpookyDood brings up are easily explained by this letter being a different narrative context from the one Gaster has previously occupied (and I presume will largely continue to occupy), which is what I find so interesting about it.
As for cadence, SpookyDood says that "[Gaster's] pattern of each few words being broken up by a line break is no longer present", but the first 3 sentences alone are divided into 6 lines. He even calls out certain sentences in the vessel creation as going against this pattern, proving that it doesn't have to be consistent ā€” while these line breaks do define the flow of Gaster's speech, I think the frequent use of ellipses here achieve the same effect without needlessly extending the length of the image.
The video ultimately posits that the writer is the man behind the tree, and honestly, I don't entirely disagree with that conclusion. The use of "well" checks out, as does the happy mood. In the case of both "DO YOU BELIEVE IT SO?" and "He might be happy to see you. What do you think?", the text moves on without directly responding to our answer. There's also a more loose connection to be made, in that both of these questions involve reality being dependent on our thoughts (whether each day is or is not a day of love, and whether there is or is not a man there), and likewise, dropping the egg causes the narration to act as though the egg was never there. (Obviously the man himself doesn't say any of this, but the association's still there through the narration.)
The connections don't strike me as plentiful or strong enough to stand toe-to-toe with the Gaster interpretation, but without much to go off of regarding the man, it doesn't have to deal with as much counterevidence either. I'd say I have the same problem with this theory as the others I've mentioned (an excessive avoidance of contradiction such that, instead of associating with said contradictions, the letter is attributed to a character we know so little about that it can't be argued against), but there's a fairly reasonable basis for argument here.
Thing is, I don't think these interpretations are mutually exclusive. I was ambivalent toward Gaster and the man (the mystery man, you could say) being one and the same, but the letter has done a lot to sway me toward that conclusion. Strengthening the connections between the letter, the man, and Gaster are the mutual association with forgetting (due to the blog post where Noelle can't remember the name of her egg), secrets, and disappearances. The letter's contrasting of contradictory statements ("NEW YEAR" vs. "OLD YEAR", "WASH YOUR FACE" vs. "WASH YOUR COAT") call to mind both the man ("a man" vs. "not a man", "not too important" vs. "not too unimportant") and the strange someone who corrupted Jevil ("didn't make sense" vs. "didn't not make sense").
If the letter was supposed to be written by the man, but not Gaster, I imagine the letter would have been formatted like this instead:

Conclusion

Sorry, that was long. I'm done!

2024.05.15 23:38 license2pwn3000 Seeking advice on how to demote a close friend who muted me on IG

I am wondering what everyone thinks of my situation and I would like advice on how to demote a best/close friend to more of a secondary friend or acquaintance I see every few months or so.
For context, I've been friends with her since our senior year of high school. We went to the same college together, and during college we drifted apart due to us being very different people into different things. After college ended, we both moved back to our hometown and became close again. She's generally been a reliable friend and there's nothing really that drastic that is wrong but in the past 2-3 years I've been really finding my identity/growing into the person I want to be, and I'm feeling more unaligned with her. For example, I'm more opinionated and outspoken she tends to remain neutral and a people pleaser in all situations, which have always bothered me. I've always felt a slightly jealous energy from her (for example, whenever I announce good news to a group of friends like getting a new job, she always remains silent). I also get very subtle competitive vibes from her because she copies a lot of things I do. For example, I dyed my hair a very specific color of red and she dyed hers the same color a few days after and when I died it back to my natural color, she did it again. Other examples are before she muted me and used to watch my stories, she would post very similar stories to me after I post them (similar outfits + poses, if I worked on a creative project, she would try to do the same thing and post it as well, I recently made a new friend who lives 5 minutes away from me, and then she did the same after etc.) I don't want to always assume everything is about me, and this might not be intentional, but it still makes me feel weird. Itā€™s to the point where our mutual friends all notice and point it out to me sometimes.
I've been nothing but supportive to her, and I always downplay my achievements as to not make those around me feel bad. Lately I found out she muted me on Instagram because she follows both my account for my pets and my personal account. She watches all my stories for my pet account, and never watches my stories on my regular account. For context, I don't really post anything annoying, controversial, spammy, or brag on my instagram stories. I mostly just post my pets, occasional food, friends, or my hobbies. It's been weighing on me on top of me feeling increasingly like we have very little in common. I considered confronting her about it, but I also feel like it's not my responsibility to always read other people's emotions and ask what's wrong, and it's more the other person's responsibility to me when something is wrong. This is also where the part where she's a non-confrontational people pleaser affects me because it's always up to me to read her when she should tell me if she has a problem.
I've been thinking of distancing myself from her but the problem is that she contacts me a lot (a couple times a week) and she reaches out to hang out at least once every week or every other week even though she lives 1 hour away. I also feel bad because I have a few people I consider best friends but she considers me her sole best friend which is fine but it doesn't sit well with me that she muted my stories/the possibility that she can't stand me. Why would you want to hang out with me so much if you secretly can't stand me or seeing my content?

2024.05.15 23:33 WorldNeverBreakMe Commented here last night about a Bigfoot theory I had, would like to get feedback.

Verbatim;
ā€œ An issue with bringing back some very endangered animals is actually if theyā€™ll be too inbred. I think that weā€™ve abandoned a species solely because of that danger on one occasion.
Bigfoot, if real, has a clearly undetermined range and breeding population. Itā€™s not impossible to say that thereā€™s a sizable amount, but Iā€™d argue to say itā€™s around the amount humans and our close relatives have in situations of heavy isolation over millennia in an environment that limits population size.
In my opinion, Bigfoot is Australopithecus or Homo, maybe a Tchadensis or other early hominid. They shade the defining features weā€™ve had since Tchadensis, mostly upright posture, albeit hairier and larger than any known examples of these relatively small apes, and most definitely further specialized for stealth. If I had to guess, Iā€™d say an early African exit of Homo Erectus or a previous/contemporary species that led it to convergently evolve with Paranthropus, leading to it able to grow larger in North America. The only other Bigfoot ā€œspeciesā€ I believe in is the Rock Apes of Vietnam, mostly because of the sightings from the Vietnam war which make sense to me.
I think that if these creatures share this origin, American ones would be rarer immediately. Paranthropus convergence makes sense for their mostly peaceful nature, and they definitely donā€™t eat much meat atleast. Their hairy covering is just an adaptation to mostly the Northern bits of North America, since they would have come from the Beiring land bridge. Their rareness would have been more of a mutually acknowledged environmental pressure that restricted their breeding habits, since they wouldnā€™t want to eat everything in a single area. Dispersal would be rare and over a large area to make sure tribes/families/individuals didnā€™t consume each otherā€™s food and water supplies.
Pretty much, they have always been rare and weā€™ve probably killed very few. To me, theyā€™re just extremely specialized hominids who live in a very strange way to us and are thusly not easy to find. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if they practiced funerary cannibalism, had designated areas to defecate at, and buried their dead in a ritualistic way, stemming from semi-sapient intelligence and knowledge of needing to hide from little men with no fur and thunder sticks. ā€œ
To add on, the Rock Ape is believable because during the Vietnam War, the sightings were short and always portrayed them in a territorial ape way. More aggressive, certainly, known to throw rocks during US Troopā€™s engagement with the VC mostly. Theyā€™re more chimp-like in description I guess is the term, being around the size of a man and a similar build to someone who works out for function instead of form.
I donā€™t believe in any other regionā€™s reporting, Southeast Asia and most of North America is a perfect climate to stay hidden and also get some extremes out of humankindā€™s genetics.
There is also evidence Homo Erectus was in America before the Native American populations migrated here. Homo Erectus evolved 2 million years ago, itā€™s highly likely other culture groups of them have migrated previous to this very likely example. There were multiple ā€œOut of Africaā€ events after all.
While native tribes have stories of ā€œbigfootā€, thereā€™s a video by Trey The Explainer that I find interesting going over why each of these stories are almost definitely reporting something else. I can see some being passed down long enough to muddy the water or just being based on an existing hominid, but most donā€™t have any grounds.

A Physician Disability Insurance Primer - Do You Really Need It?
The greatest financial risk for physicians is losing the ability to turn the knowledge and skills you spent a decade learning into a huge pile of money by working in your profession for decades. There are risks that could show up in your life that would prevent you from being able to accomplish this task. One of the most common of these risks is an extended or even permanent disability. Insurance companies estimate that as many as one in seven doctors will be disabled at some point during their career. While many imagine this will occur in a sudden traumatic accident, medical illness is actually a more common cause of disability that prevents a doctor from working. Physician disability is a complicated type of insurance. This post will give you the ā€œmust-knowā€ information to secure the best protection and help you avoid common disability insurance mistakes.

TL;DR: Key Takeaways: What Doctors Need to Know About Disability Insurance

  1. The best Disability Insurance policy is an individual, portable, own-occupation, specialty-specific policy.
  2. Purchase disability insurance from an independent agent who can show you policies from all of the major companies. We have a list of recommended Disability Insurance agents used by thousands of white coat investors each year.
  3. Buy as much disability insurance as they are willing to sell you as a resident. Include a future purchase option (sometimes called a ā€œbenefit purchase riderā€ or ā€œfuture increase optionā€) and a cost of living disability insurance rider.
  4. As an attending, increase your coverage to cover both your living expenses and retirement savings if you were to work to age 65.
  5. You may get sticker shock, but the reason disability insurance is expensive is that it actually gets used. Slightly more than 1 out of 4 adults will experience a disability before they retire. Physician disability insurance agents often use a figure of 1 out of 7 doctors actually using the disability insurance they purchase. Whatever the true statistic may be, it's certainly high enough to insure against.
Do not take the risk of not having disability insurance.

What Is Disability Insurance?

Disability insurance gives you an income to live on if you become so disabled that you can no longer work.
If you become disabled, a long-term disability insurance policy pays a predetermined amount each month until you either recover from your disability or reach age 65-67. (Note: Policies vary. It is possible to buy a policy that pays to age 70 or even, for a very high premium, until death).

Why Do Physicians Need Disability Insurance?

One out of seven doctors end up having to use their disability insurance. Losing the ability to turn the knowledge and skills you spent a decade learning into a pile of money by working in your profession for decades is one of the most expensive risks that physicians face. Your most valuable asset is your ability to work.

How Does Disability Insurance Work?

Disability insurance is a pretty straightforward proposition. You buy a policy and pay your premium monthly or annually. If you become disabled, you (and your doctor) fill out the paperwork to prove it to the satisfaction of the insurance company and then they pay you the promised monthly benefit until you either recover from your disability or the insurance company meets its contractual obligation to pay the benefit.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Disability

Disability insurance is most commonly divided into short-term and long-term.

Short-Term Disability

A short-term disability policy generally begins paying just as soon as you get disabled and then pays for a maximum period of 3-24 months. These policies are often provided by an employer as an employee benefit. Short-term disability, while inconvenient financially, is not generally a financial catastrophe for a physician saving for retirement with an emergency fund. As a result, many doctors do not buy short-term disability policies at all.

Long-Term Disability

A long-term disability policy generally does not pay immediately, but only begins to pay after a waiting period ranging from 1-24 months (typically 3 months). Then, the policy will continue to pay you a benefit each month until age 65, 67, or 70, depending on the policy. Note that a 3 month waiting period typically means your first check won't come until the end of the first month after the 3 months, so it's really a 4 month waiting period. Since losing your ability to earn a living for the rest of your life is a financial catastrophe, any doctor who is not financially independent should buy a long-term disability insurance policy.

What Does Disability Insurance Cover?

Disability insurance covers all kinds of disabilities. The best (and unfortunately most expensive) policies cover the widest range of potential disabilities.

The Definition of Disability

The most important feature is the definition of disability. Disability insurance differs from life insurance in numerous ways, but none is more significant than in defining exactly when you become disabled (and when you become enabled again). The broader the definition of disability you get in your policy, the more the policy will cost.
Unlike life insurance, where life and death are pretty black and white, disability has 50 shades of gray. You want a policy with a strong, broad definition of disability that will cover any possible type of disability? That means ā€œtrue own-occupation, specialty-specificā€ and no limitations on things such as psychiatric conditions or addictions. This is the main difference between the ā€œBig 5ā€ companies and others. Even among the ā€œBig 5,ā€ there are slight differences. It is OK not to purchase the policy with the very best definition of disability, but the weaker the definition, the bigger the discount you should expect.

Own-Occupation, Specialty-Specific

Probably the most important aspect of the definition for doctors is that it be specific to your occupation. For instance, if I lost my left thumb, there are a number of procedures in emergency medicine that I could no longer do. I would be completely disabled from managing a busy emergency department by myself. But I could probably still go do urgent care work. A specialty-specific definition of disability in my policy would provide me with my full disability payments in addition to the money I make at the urgent care. Sometimes, the ā€œspecialty-specificā€ clause is inherent to the policy, and at other times it is an additional rider (a piece of paper added to the policy for which you pay an additional premium). Either way, you almost surely want to get this in your policy. Here are the various definitions, starting with own occupation and progressing to any occupation.

Own-Occupation Definition

Under this definition, your policy will pay if you cannot work in your occupation/specialty, even if you can and do work in another field and make as much money as you want.
Own-occupation policies cover people based on the occupational duties they are performing at the time of claim. If your policy includes an own-occupation definition of total disability and you are exclusively performing the customary duties of your medical specialty or sub-specialty at the time of the claim, the policy will cover you when unable to perform your specialty or sub-specialty. If you have transitioned into a different role or expanded into a new career path that requires much less direct patient contact or procedural duties, you may no longer be considered totally disabled when unable to work in your specialty or sub-specialty. This is because your ā€œoccupation(s)ā€ involves additional material and substantial duties, no longer limited to the performance of your medical specialty or sub-specialty. In these instances, you may be considered partially disabled or not disabled at all, depending on the exact circumstances.

Transitional Own-Occupation

Your policy will pay if you cannot work in your occupation/specialty, even if you can and do work in another field. But if you exceed your previous income while you now work in another field, your monthly benefit from the policy would likely be lowered.

Modified Own-Occupation

Your policy will only pay if you can't work in your occupation/specialty AND if you are not working in another field. This definition is also sometimes called ā€œOwn-Occupation, Not Engagedā€ or ā€œOwn-Occupation, Not Working.ā€

Any-Occupation

Your policy will only pay if you cannot work in any occupation based on education, training or experience. Note that some policies are own-occupation for a couple of years and then transition to any-occupation.
One company out there (Northwestern Mutual) sells a policy with a definition that they claim is BETTER than own-occupation. They call it Medical Own-Occupation, but in reality, it is just a form of modified own-occupation. Learn more about the NML Medical Own-Occupation Definition.

Do You Really Need an Own-Occupation, Specialty-Specific Policy?

Some non-procedural physicians argue that they might not need a true own-occupation policy. They reason that if they are so disabled that they cannot practice their specialty, they probably cannot do anything else. So, they accept a less broad definition of disability to save some dollars on the premium. If you choose to do this, make sure you understand the exact circumstances under which your policy will and will not pay out.

Mental Disorders/Substance Abuse

Many policies will only cover mental illness or substance abuse-related disabilities for a period of two years. I know an attorney who couldn't practice law after developing bipolar syndrome in his 30s. It took over a decade to get it under control. He had a policy that covered mental illness indefinitely, which prevented financial catastrophe from striking him and his family.
According to the April 2011 issue of Current Psychiatry Magazine, physicians are not immune to depression and have an increased risk of suicide. Additionally, the lack of distinction between a psychiatric diagnosis and impairment stigmatizes physicians and impedes treatment.
You'll need to decide whether this is a risk you're willing to run. If you want mental illness covered like every other illness, you'll be paying more.

Presumptive Total Disability

As you well know, disability can be defined in many shades of gray. In the event of your disability, you can expect a paperwork fight between you, your physician, the disability insurance company, and maybe even your attorney. However, most policies contain a section that defines ā€œpresumptive total disabilityā€ where you can be assured there won't be much arguing from the insurance company. Even better, the waiting period will be waived and you'll start getting payments right away.
Anything short of that, and you're going to have to get your doctor to certify your disability and get the insurance company to accept it. At times, this can involve visits to multiple specialists and even hiring an attorney. Note that with some companies, presumptive disability does not need to be permanent.

Cosmetic Surgery/Transplant Surgery

Some policies will cover you if your disability is the result of cosmetic surgery or the result of donating a kidney or other body part to someone else. Others will not. Best to read your policy carefully and know what it does and does not cover.

Disability Insurance Exclusions & Limitations

Disability insurance policies generally exclude any medical conditions you have at the time of applying for insurance. For example, if you already have chronic back pain, the policy will not provide a benefit if you are disabled due to a back condition. In addition, if you admit to participating in dangerous activities such as scuba diving, rock climbing, flying, and sky-diving, the policy will likely be issued with a rider that excludes those activities from coverage. Other exclusions may also apply, such as acts of war, normal pregnancy, and foreign travel. Here is a list of common exclusions:
  • War or Act of War (this could probably be interpreted pretty broadly)
  • Active Military Duty (having served, this is pretty stupid since 95%+ of our military folks are never in any kind of serious danger of being hurt by a combatant)
  • Normal Pregnancy (don't want to work because you're eight months pregnant? Don't bother trying to get disability benefits for that)
  • Foreign Travel (varies by policy, but many don't cover you during that European vacation, much less that humanitarian trip to Sudanā€”read the fine print)
  • Mental/Nervous Disorder (many companies limit benefits to two years, where they might pay for ā€œphysicalā€ disorders until you're 65 years old)
  • Medical Exclusions (any medical conditions you have at the time the policy is issued will likely be excluded, meaning if you have heart disease at the time of issuance and it leads to you being disabled five years later, the policy isn't going to pay. Again, apply when you are young and healthy and/or when you haven't had medical problems for several years to minimize this.)

Residual Disability

Residual disability refers to being only partially disabled. This may occur from the initial injury or illness or be part of the process of recovery. You generally need to buy an additional rider to cover this. Read this rider carefully, it can be a bit complicated.
Imagine developing painful lumbar radiculopathy that keeps you from working more than 20 hours a week. This is the part of your policy that will cover that. This rider will also explain how much you get if you are partially disabled. My old policy says it pays the whole benefit (total disability) if I can't earn at least 20% of my ā€œindexed prior monthly earnings,ā€ which is basically the money I earn at my job. It doesn't count my investments, other disability income policies, rent from a rental property, or my nonvocational activities. It doesn't pay anything if my earnings aren't reduced at least 20%. If I am making between 20%-80% of what I made previously, I get the total disability benefit times the ratio of my loss of income for that month divided by my indexed prior monthly earnings. Note that with some companies, the partial disability rider will kick in at 15%.
Some contracts use ā€œorā€ in the contract and others use ā€œandā€ in the contracxt. For instance, a stronger policy would trigger the partial disability rider if you had a loss of income or a loss of time or a loss of duty whereas a weaker contract would require loss of income and loss of time and loss of duty where all of those triggers must be met.

Partial Disability vs. Residual Disability

Partial disability and residual disability are generally considered to be the same thing, but there is a technical difference at some companies. For example, at one company, a partial disability rider requires total disability during the elimination period and the residual disability rider does not. With another company, partial refers to the disability, such as one that only affects one part of the body (such as one arm), while residual refers to a decrease in earnings. Either way, the key is to understand how the residual/partial rider works in the policy you actually purchase.

Recovery Benefits

A physician should consider a contract that will continuing paying them a portion of their benefits upon recovery from a disability if their income continues to be down at least 15%-20%. Most carriers will pay a recovery benefit for the benefit period although one only pays for 12 months. This is especially important for practice owners. Think if a dentist were to be disabled for 6 months and then recovers and goes back to their practice. Many of their patients may have gone elsewhere because the dentist sees his patients twice a year. It could take several years to get back to where he/she was at before becoming disabled.

Recommendations for Physicians on Disability Insurance Riders

Here's an easy cheat card to help you know at a glance what we think about all of the various riders available.

Who Needs Disability Insurance?

Nearly every high-income professional in their first decade or two out of school should own a policy. Your most valuable asset is your ability to work. So, if you do not own a disability insurance policy, you need to go get one, now. If you have an income, it's time to buy a policy, even if money is tight as a resident. The only exception is if you do not rely on your income to live. If you are already financially independent, it's OK not to buy disability insurance. However, even if you are frugal and married to another high earner, you may wish to still have a policy. You could both become disabled, or you could become divorced.

How Much Physician Disability Insurance Do I Need?

As a resident, you typically cannot afford to buy as much as you need, but you should be able to do so even as a brand-new attending. Basically, you need to buy enough disability insurance to cover both your living expenses and your retirement savings if you were to work to age 65 but not your taxes. Physician disability insurance payouts are generally tax-free since they are usually paid with post-tax dollars.
Note that how much you need has little to do with your income and everything to do with what you spend. The less you spend, the less insurance you need to buy. Insurance agents would love to sell you the largest possible policy (which usually works out to be about 2/3 of your gross income, but it is possible to combine two companies to get even more), so you'll need to decide how much you need on your own. Resident physicians typically buy a $5,000 per month benefit and attending physicians typically buy a benefit in the $10,000-$15,000 per month range, but there are plenty of docs who buy both more and less. If your plan in the event of disability is to rely on the income of your spouse, you may not need disability insurance at all.

Average Cost of Disability Insurance for Physicians

Unlike cheaper insurance policies like term life and umbrella policies, physician disability insurance is expensive, although not quite as expensive as your malpractice insurance. The reason it costs so much is it actually gets used. The likelihood of you acquiring a long-term disability during your working years is approximately seven times as high as your risk of dying in those years. A typical policy bought on a healthy doc in their 20s or 30s will cost something between 2%-6% of the benefit. If your monthly benefit is $10,000, expect to spend $200-$600 per month for that. Perhaps the sticker shock you get upon being quoted prices will motivate you to reach financial independence as soon as possible so you can cancel the policy.

Graded vs. Level Premiums

One way to save money on your policy is to get graded premiums. Not all policies offer this feature, but those that do will charge you less in the first few years and more in later years. Level premium policies charge you the same amount in premium every year. A graded premium policy accounts for the fact that you become more likely to become disabled as you go through life. However, it can be very beneficial to you because your need for insurance actually falls continually throughout your career as your build your retirement nest egg.
Once you become financially independent, you can drop the insurance completely. This is a good idea since the total benefits a policy could potentially pay are also dropping throughout your life (since the policy will generally only pay until you are in your mid- to late-60s). Many white coat investors who are great savers hit financial independence by mid-career. If you are one of those, you are likely to come out ahead using graded premiums instead of level premiums.

What Disability Insurance Discounts Are Available for Doctors?

Like other types of insurance, disability insurance is sold by agents who are paid commissions by the insurance companies to sell their products. It is a very competitive business. The insurance companies want agents, especially the independent agents you should be buying from, to preferentially sell their products. To incentivize the agents, they offer discounts that are only available through certain agents. Experienced, high-volume agents can often provide you with the same policy at a cheaper rate than a newer, lower-volume agent. Thus, it pays to use an experienced agent and shop around with two or three of them. Nearly every doctor should qualify for some type of discount on their policyā€”10%-30% premium discounts are not unusual. Types of discounts include:
  • Unisex discounts
  • Student/Resident/Fellow discounts
  • Multi-life institution discounts
  • Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) institution discounts
  • Association discounts
Learn more about physician disability insurance discounts.

How Do I Buy Disability Insurance?

The key to physician disability insurance is the independent agent. The agent is going to be paid a great commission by the insurance company no matter which policy you choose. Assuming policies with similar benefits, the commission isn't going to be all that different. Plus, these agents get plenty of business and none of them are starving, so they have little incentive to sell you an inferior policy for a slightly higher commission. Their reputation is worth far more than a few extra dollars in commission. Since you are (indirectly) paying the agent a very nice commission, don't feel bad about using their time and expertise to fully understand this complicated product.
For most doctors, this is a purchase that is only done once or twice in their life. Have the agent quote you different physician disability policies from each of the ā€œBig 5ā€ companies and show you the strengths and weaknesses of each. If you have a policy from work or your professional association, bring it in with you and have it included in the comparison. Then, you can know you made an educated decision and you can buy it and forget about it. Also, be sure to ask for a discount. The vast majority of doctors will qualify for a 5%-30% association or employer-related discount, and a top-notch agent will help you get that.

What Type of Disability Insurance Should I Buy?

There are two main types of disability policies: individual policies and group policies. As a general rule, individual policies have stronger definitions of disability. Many group policies are not own-occupation policies. Individual policies are also portable, in that you can change jobs and take them with you.

Individual Disability Policy

There are a number of benefits of an individual policy. The main one is that you are in control of all the details. You get to choose how much insurance you want to pay for. You get to choose which of the bells and whistles you are going to pay for. The policy is also ā€œportable,ā€ meaning you still have it if you change employers (or if your employer just decides to change the policy). As a general rule, the policy is also ā€œstronger,ā€ meaning it is more likely to actually pay you if you get disabled.

Group Disability Policy

A group policy provided by your employer is usually not portable, although sometimes you are allowed to take over the entire premium and take it with you. Group policies also frequently have premiums that increase every year or every five years, whereas an individual policy usually has level premiums. Group policies paid for by your employer may also pay a taxable benefit, rather than the tax-free benefit provided by an individual policy. Aside from the lower cost, the main benefit of a group policy is that it may be easier to qualify for. It may not require any sort of medical exam or blood work, and it may not ask any pesky questions about your medical conditions and dangerous hobbies such as rock climbing, skydiving, scuba diving, or flying.

How to Compare Disability Insurance Policies

The most important feature is the definition of disability. You want a policy with a strong, broad definition of disability that will cover any possible type of disability. That usually means ā€œown-occupation, specialty-specificā€ and no limitations on things such as psychiatric conditions or addictions. This is the main difference between the ā€œBig 5ā€ companies and others.
Since disability is complicated, disability insurance policies are complicated. There are dozens of differences from one policy to another, making them difficult to compare. Use your independent agent for recommendations on what matters most. Just for an example, take a look at this chart of all the differences you could see between one policy and another.

When to Buy Disability Insurance?

You should buy disability insurance just before you become disabled. Since you don't know when that time could be, earlier is generally better. However, disability insurance is also expensive, and when you are young and poor, you have lots of other great uses for your money. A good compromise is to buy a small policy as you enter residency and then upgrade to a more robust disability insurance plan just before leaving residency. The younger you are, the healthier you are, and the fewer dangerous hobbies you engage in, the cheaper your premiums will be for the same benefit.

Best Disability Insurance for Physicians

I keep a list of those I consider the best disability insurance agents in the country. Save yourself the work of finding a good one you can trust and use the same agents that have been used by thousands of WCI readers in the past. You do not need someone local that you can sit down across the table from. It is better to have someone who has sold policies to hundreds of docs this year working with you by phone, Skype, Zoom, and email than someone you can sit down with who has only sold four policies. In addition, if there is some issue with one of these agents, I can usually help you resolve it quickly.
Information in this space rapidly changes. While we try to keep The White Coat Investor website as up-to-date as possible, our recommended agents are going to be our best source for updated information. I cannot emphasize how strongly I suggest you use them, whether buying your first policy or simply reviewing what you already have.

2024.05.15 21:55 Maximum-Trainer3584 how do i deal with the aftermath of an abusive relationship in highschool? i feel detached

Hi, iā€™m basically just going to dump my senior year into this post.. itā€™s super longā€¦ going into my senior year in the fall, I had a boyfriend since junior year at 16. it was kind of messy when we got first started dating, because he was one of my recent friends ex-boyfriend of like two years . with the things he would do to me, i thought i deserved it because of how shitty i felt about myself for what i did. I was really confused because I thought I ā€œloved himā€, but some of the things he would do to me I knew werenā€™t okay or normal. like some examples are that he spit in my face in the middle of an argument, he choked me, several times, he would stay outside of my house when I tried to break up with him, and when I would park, he would come out from the side and choke me and tell me that I was making a mistake by breaking up with him. he also burned me with second degree burns and i made up excuses for him afterwards, telling people i had bandages on my arm because i dropped hot food on myself. And after every abusive thing he would do, he would end up ā€œlove bombingā€ me. like he wrote a 4 page story about us, wrote very long poems about why he loved me, and always talked about us getting married etc. take in mind he also cheated the first month in with the ex from before, and i should have left then but i ended up breaking up with him 10 months after when he choked me the week before. thatā€™s when i knew that how he treated me wasnā€™t okay. i never told my friends about any of it while i was going through it. after the break up he wouldnā€™t stop calling me and following me. i was in a parking lot, a 30 minute drive away from him with my friend, who goes to another school, when i callled him to leave me alone and have a mutual, peaceful breakup (thatā€™s all i wanted) he showed up in about 15 minutes after i turned off my location and tried getting me out of the car, but my friend ended up getting out herself and telling him that he needed to leave. i was so confused on if i should break up with him or if i was being dramatic. so the next day in class during school i made a pros and cons list (it ended up being all cons). i was also researching , questioning if what he was doing was wrong. i never listed out everything he did to me before, it was all jumbled in my head so once i wrote it down, i knew that it was abusive. the next day, somehow my document got flagged by Ai for the school and my counselor called me in and said he had to report it to the police department and call my parents. i was an absolute mess, i couldnā€™t stop crying and i begged my parents to not do anything. he also checked the cameras in school, and he told my parents that my ex was following me around all week and i hadnā€™t even realized it. so that night, my parents took me in the department, and because i was a minor, they decided to press charges. i was so angry, hurt, sad and when i tell you, the following weeks i begged them to not get the police involved and just ā€œtalkā€ with his parents. that didnā€™t happen. so i got interviewed and the police recommended that i filed for a DV restraining order. i felt so shameful and i knew that it would effect my social life. i blocked him on all socials after, and he ended up coming to my house while my parents were home and calling and texting them for 20 minutes trying to get inside the house. saying he needed to ā€œsee meā€ . they called the cops but he left and then the cops ended up going to his house and interviewed and served him. during the restraining order process, we went to the court about three times which is pretty abnormal for a RO. Because we were trying to make accommodations for him to still be able to go to school, but he ended up lying on the affidavit and his lawyer was like, illegally representing our principal, and the school ended up expelling him for that reason. the principal ended up, calling my parents to tell them that he got expelled, and he said that going to a private school was a privilege not a right. And during this time, people started to know why he wasnā€™t at school anymore, and I go to a very small school, and I heard that some people were saying that he never ā€œseemed like the type to do anything like that.ā€ I never talk about the situation with anyone, except for my two closest friends, I donā€™t tell anybody details, so everything was known by telephone or by his friends. i donā€™t like to talk about the whole situation with anybody because I feel like thatā€™s a bad look on my part if that makes sense? Fast forward to spring, him, and his ex started hooking up again, and she left her boyfriend for him, but she keeps going back and forth between her two exes and i can tell itā€™s probably still toxic. she also doesnā€™t believe me. sometimes I think that, maybe the reason that she doesnā€™t believe me, is that if she does accept it, she might have to recognize that some of the behaviors that heā€™s done to her arenā€™t acceptable, and might fall under abuse. and prom is coming up, and his best friend hosts the huge after party every year, which basically the whole senior grade is invited, like 70 people. But his friend didnā€™t invite me, and invited him. And Iā€™m trying to not let it bother me, but the fact that heā€™s going to be there with the whole grade just kind of hurts me. while he is at an after party for a school he doesnā€™t go to anymore, im gong to be sitting at home. and also every single one of my ā€œfriendsā€ are going. and some people are saying that they feel bad for me and others will say in response ā€œshe did it to herselfā€ which makes me really upset, because I never wanted anything to get out in the first place. And also another one of my closest friends always plays neutral in the middle, and that upsets me too, but I donā€™t really ever say anything about it. when i mean ā€œneutralā€, he will hang out with the ex, sometimes the ex will try and invite my friend to go hang out with her and my abuser, and I donā€™t know why it upsets me, but it doesā€¦ i just feel like itā€™s accepting his behavior and invalidates everything . I also texted the best friend who is hosting prom, and I have never been confrontational about what happened, but I said what he did was shitty to do. And he told me basically summed up, that I was the one that got the restraining order on him and that my ex wasnā€™t a ā€œcriminalā€. and I guess in the end, itā€™s good that the charges went through, and I have a restraining order, because if I never had any of that, people around me would think I was the girl who cried wolf. people at my school never talk about it to my face, but I know that they talk about it behind my back. also, two months after I got the restraining order I ended up talking to a guy at a party that Iā€™ve kind of been in love with since i was 14, and he asked me what happened to him and said ā€œyouā€™re crazyā€. which I know isnā€™t anything too mean, but I just feel like that implies the view of a lot of guys in our grade towards me for the whole situation. Also, sidenote, that night, when we were hanging out, I remembered what it was like to have normal interactions between a boy and a girl in a relationship, and it just felt really nice for one night. i just kind of hate the position Iā€™m in, and I wish none of it ever happened, and I feel so emotionally, detached, and like Iā€™ll never really find genuine love. Which Iā€™m not looking for at all right now. but I have to prep myself before I walk into school everyday and through out the day I ask God to give me strength about 30 times . And I donā€™t really know how to feel better. iā€™m 18 now and going to be graduating soon, and but sometimes itā€™s just really hard. I donā€™t really know why am posting this, but I feel like I just need some guidance or something.

2024.05.15 19:40 SciFiTime Human Task Force Arrived

Councillor Vek stood on the observation deck of the cruiser Balexa, as she watched the blue planet below. Earth, as the inhabitants called it. Indigenous life had only just developed tools and weapons of metal and combustion, yet something about this world felt...different.
Vek's assistant, a young Dreth named Pylor, approached. "Councillor, our sensors have detected an unusual energy signature coming from that landmass." He pointed to a region on the planet's map.
Vek peered down at the indicated area. "Life signs?"
"Massive. Billions within that small area alone. And..." Pylor double checked the readings. "Their technology...it's exceeding all models for their stage of development."
Intrigued, Vek ordered the Balexa into a lower orbit to investigate directly. Below, sprawling cities dominated the landscape, towers of metal and glass thrusting towards the heavens. Ground vehicles filled roadways in great herds.
But it was what Vek saw in the skies that made her gasp. Dozens of giant space ships above the planet.
Vek urged the Balexa closer, honing in on the largest vessel. Over a kilometer long, it resembled an arrowhead piercing the clouds. Guiding it through flight tests, no doubt. But its capabilities went far beyond simple transport.
Her eyes analyzed the gleaming hull. Powerful weapons arrays, ultra-dense alloys, inertial dampenersā€”this was no mere explorer ship. It bore the armaments of a capital warship, yet wielded in the skies of a supposedly primitive world, according to 1000 year old reports.
"Scan it," Vek ordered. The results shocked even her aged sensibilities. Particle beam projectors, gravitic torque generators, ablative shield matrix far exceeding, any known galaxy-class defenses. She watched silent as the warship shrugged off simulated meteor bombardments, and energy lances that would have crippled a flagship.
"Are the sensors malfunctioning?" Pylor asked. "This...this shouldn't be possible."
Vek didn't respond, lost in thought. The colonization directive had brought her here expecting a standard uplifting, not...this. A new species on the cusp of space, yes, but with a military capability challenging the Grand Fleet itself. Her duties were clear, yet prudence demanded further observation before revealing her presence.
That evening, Vek witnessed lights illuminate the cities as perpetual twilight fell. Not the flickering fires of a primitive settlement, but vast geometric patterns flooding the night with steady radiance. Roadways became rivers of motion as noxious fumes belched from pipes. She watched holographic entertainments broadcast atop towering spires, their realism surpassing even the Dreamcast pleasure worlds.
It was all too much. This world had advanced beyond all projections, its technology perfectly integrated within human civilization. Yet had achieved spaceflight only yesterday. An impossibility...unless directed by an outside influence. But signatures showed no alien contamination, only the fingerprints of natural evolution.
"Councillor," Pylor interrupted her thoughts, "I'm detecting a new vessel launching from the underground test site."
Vek shifted her gaze and witnessed madness. Rising from its berth came a colossus the size of a hab-moon. Twenty kilometers of pitiless metal rising on pillars of blue inferno, a vast sphinx of iron. Its armored prow glinted cruel in the light of its world. No other word could apply but "leviathan."
She watched speechless as it performed basic maneuvers. Its motion sent ripples through the atmosphere itself, as entire mountain ranges would shake. Multispectral scans revealed engineering beyond rational thought, a work of art and horror, given form in girders and armour-plates. No known drive system could shift its bulk, yet it drifted with ethereal grace.
Vek collapsed into her command throne, as the giant ship vanished into the mottled sky. Only one thought echoed through her stunned mind.
This changes everything.
Councillor Vek's findings on the human home world of Earth, had rocked the Galactic Council to its core. A species possessing technological marvels far beyond their years of spaceflight, should not exist, yet Vek's evidence proved otherwise. As the leaders convened an emergency session, their debate centered around how to handle this unprecedented development.
"Negotiations must be made at once, to assess if these 'humans' pose a threat," stated Morax of the Androrian Conglomerate. "We cannot allow such advanced militaries to emerge unchecked in the galaxy."
Vek spoke up. "I caution haste. The humans integrate their technologies peacefully on Earth, and welcomed our observations from orbit. Forceful intervention risks destroying what could be a powerful new ally."
Others argued humanity should be contained for study and surveillance, to learn their intentions. Tempers flared until Councillor Porx silenced the chamber. "Further debate is pointless without understanding these beings. Vek, with your ship the Balexa being closest, you are tasked with open contact and assessment of the human condition."
Reluctantly agreeing, Vek set course for Earth with escort vessels. As the Balexa entered atmo, she watched the armada of human vessels fill the skies once more. Her mind raced with what to make of such a belligerent yet benign species. Perhaps hospitality ruled here while militarism emerged elsewhere, as with so many spacefaring civilizations.
The Balexa landed in an open field outside a sprawling metropolis. Vek and her delegation exited warily, the high oxygen air thick in their respiratory systems. Above, jet aircraft flew patrol routes. while curious onlookers documented the arrival on personal communicators.
Approaching vehicles emerged, this time carrying humans who exited with open hands. "Greetings, I'm Commander Jasmine Chen of the United Earth Space Command," said the apparent leader. "We welcome peaceful contact and welcome you to our world."
Her relaxed yet watchful presence put Vek at ease. "I am Councillor Vek of the Galactic Council. We come in friendship to learn of your people and capabilities."
Chen nodded. "Please, come with me and weā€™ll discuss how we might cooperate for mutual benefit.ā€ She guided them into waiting transport vehicles towards a towering citadel. Along the route, Vek glimpsed, colossal fusion reactors, automated infrastructure, and most astonishing, families and children walking without fear amongst such technological wonders.
Arriving at the United Earth Space Command headquarters, Vek received a cultural download on human history. Only an eyeblink ago, they waged wars from the back of beasts and shattered each other with primitive explosives. Now they spanned the Solar System and bent physics to their will, yet retained community and empathy in their evolution.
Chen brought them to a viewing platform high above the city. "This is what 350 years of focused progress has achieved. Our advance began, when we discovered alien wrecks on the Moon containing lost knowledge. From there, our science boomed while social reforms fostered cooperation."
Vek struggled to process such rapid development. "And your military capabilities? Ones matching capital fleets already?"
Chen smiled knowingly. "A necessity of our past, yet now a guarantor of peace. We keep stride to ensure safe expansion, not conquest. See, all technologies serve life's betterment."
Her wise words allayed Vek's fears of some belligerent power. Indeed, humans bore responsibility for such marvels rather than recklessness. She thanked Chen, believing a new partnership had begun that could uplift the galaxy.
As the Balexa departed that day, Vek pondered all she now understood of humanity. A species arisen from war to wisdom, empowerment and care for others. Their defense of all requiring defense through strength guided safely by conscience. Truly an example to follow into a brighter future, if accepted.
But ominous clouds gathered where none before have been...
The Council chambers fell silent as reports of the Balexa's findings spread across the Galactic network. Councillor Vek recounted humanity's technological feats and philosophical underpinnings in great detail. While unsettled by Earth's military prowess, the consensus agreed their intentions seemed benevolent.
As debate resumed, an aide burst in with urgency. "Attack fleets have engaged at the Estron outposts. Casualty estimates are catastrophic."
Gasps filled the room. Estron, a core Council world renowned for compassion, laid defenseless against the ravaging warships. But how had the Anti Council faction pushed this deep so quickly?
Vek turned to the hologlobe, coordinating response forces to intervene quickly. But she knew conventional fleets, couldn't match the invader's new annihilating momentum. Unless...
An idea formed, She opened a channel to Commander Chen, as other leaders objected in shock. "Humanity proving themselves is unwarranted. We cannot condone--"
But Vek sensed Chen had come to the same conclusion. "Councillor, send us all you have on this threat. Our ships stand ready to aid in whatever way is needed."
The Council fell silent at her resolve. Vek transmitted Battle Assessment 716-C and tracked the human warship streaking into hyperdrive, escorted by two escort cruisers. She prayed this unprecedented response would succeed where fleets had failed.
As the human task force arrived at Estron, they beheld utter ruin. Planetoids bombarded into dust, settlements glassed from space. The last distress calls wept through static, as heat shimmered off molten continents.
Captain Sato of the Yamato grimaced at the carnage. "This ends today. Shields to maximum, charge main cannons. Helm take us in."
The faction armada appeared like demons bursting from an inferno, dozens of war beasts thirsting for more conquest. But they weren't prepared for the grey giant, punching through their formation's heart.
Blue lances of plasma speared the leading ship, overloading its shielding and armor in a microsecond. The massive ship erupted in a brilliant fireball that consumed several nearby fighter craft. Meanwhile, precision volleys from the Yamato's mass drivers sheared through the battlecruiser amidships. Secondary explosions ripped the cruiser to pieces, as it drifted lifeless.
The humans coordinated their attacks with flawless synchronization. Squads of escort gunships strafed and bombarded the swarm ships, attempting to flank the capital ships. Their advanced targeting systems, allowed multiple targets to be engaged simultaneously. Within minutes, over a dozen enemy vessels had been eliminated with surgical strikes.
The surviving faction forces regrouped and organized a desperate counterattack. A dozen assault frigates charged headlong at the Yamato, unleashing everything in their arsenals. Shields flared as energy lanced and missiles impacted across the human warship. But its shields held easily, dissipating each strike with efficiency.
Resuming its offensive, the Yamato activated its main cannons once more. Two gigawatt particle beams lashed out, melting through the foremost frigates in a pair of massive explosions. Shrapnel and debris pelted the remaining ships, crippling their systems. Bombardment from the escorts mopped up the drifting hulks.
With their main attack crushed, the rest of the fleet broke into a panic-fueled retreat. They scattered in all directions, pursued relentlessly by human forces. Within the hour, only broken ship fragments remained of what was once a formidable invader fleet.
Aboard the Yamato, Captain Sato surveyed the devastated aftermath with a heavy heart. So many lives lost unnecessarily, due to the faction's brutal conquests. But now, Estron could begin to heal thanks to humanity's intervention. As cleanup crews tended to survivors, Sato opened a channel to Earth and to Galactic Council to deliver their mission report.
Word of the battle's outcome would help forge new bonds of trust, and cooperation between humanity and the Galactic Council.
In the ruins of Estron's capital, Councillor Vek witnessed humanity's compassion firsthand. Survivors were rescued, and cared for without regard for species or faction. She knew in that moment that the Pax Terra had begun, and a new era of partnership had dawned with Earth.

2024.05.15 18:44 TheGentleman300 Conquest Chapter 18: the worst chapter in the series imo, and rewriting it (part 1)

A friend of mine started playing Fates for the first time, so once again I got bitten by the ā€œcomplaining about Fatesā€ bug. In particular, watching chapter 18 of Conquest again after so many years really got me going, and while the general consensus Iā€™ve seen online about this chapters writing was negative, I wasnā€™t that satisfied by any of the overviews of it I read. I decided to give it a shot myself.
Dissecting why something doesnā€™t work is fun and all, but I think itā€™s also important to be constructive which is why I wanted to rewrite this chapter alongside my criticisms. I really do think thereā€™s a lot of potential here that could have been the highlight of the entire story, and so Iā€™d love to try my hand rewriting this chapter to be what it could have been rather than what we got. I have most of it done already, but Reddit only has so many characters before it cuts you off and this post is plenty long enough as is, so Iā€™ll save that for another part coming up soon. This will be part 1, explaining what the chapter is and elaborating on my issues with it, while part 2 will be rewriting it along with my thought process and explanations.
Recap: https://fireemblem.fandom.com/wiki/Black_%26_White/Script
Corrin and Co are traveling when they decide to rest for the night at the nation of Izumo. They are greeted by Izana, the archduke of the kingdom, who seems to be a real goofball. After introducing himself, the levity is ended when itā€™s revealed the entire Hoshidan family has been invited here as well! Before any swords can be undrawn, Izana tells both parties that the kingdom has a strict neutrality pact neither of them can violate.
The scene cuts to later, where Ryoma enters Corrin and Xanders room to talk with them. Xander and Ryomaā€™s argument is cut short when Ryoma is dragged off by Nohrians. Turns out ā€œIzanaā€ is actually a Nohrian mage named Zola, who disguised himself to trick the Hoshidan royal family into a trap. Corrin and Xander donā€™t approve of such dishonorable methods to win, however, and fight to rescue their captives with Xander saying ā€œweā€™ll win this war with honor or die tryingā€. After Leo kills Zola, the game cuts to later where we see Nohrians and Hoshidans alike having a meal, much to the delight of the real Izuma, who turns out is exactly as bizarre as the fake impression. Xander and Ryoma confirm with eachother that their fight will continue as usual, but Corrin states that no matter what happens theyā€™re grateful they got to see both families eating together even if itā€™s not under the best circumstances, and the chapter ends with them saying theyā€™ll revel in this feeling.
So on paper, I think this chapter is a great idea. Despite being at war, when one family is at the total mercy of the other, they lend a hand instead of kicking them while theyā€™re down. This highlights how the two nations could accomplish so much together if only they werenā€™t at war with eachother. If utilized well, this could have been a great ā€œeye of the tornado sceneā€ emphasizing how tragic it is that these two families who share so much in common are forced by fate to fight eachother, making it all the more sorrowful when thatā€™s brought to itā€™s conclusion through bloodshed. This would also encourage Conquest players to buy Birthright in a natural and subtle way as well now that theyā€™ve had a nice sample of the other side. Of course, I donā€™t think this chapter was utilized well, and after reading the script again I believe it boils down to three major problems.
-Problem 1: The Lack of Worldbuilding Causes the Conflict to be Driven by Contrivances.
This is one of the many instances where the lack of fleshing out the world and itā€™s rules out really hampers the weight of the scenes. Unlike Awakening where there was a general cause-and-effect outlining the level structure, all of the Fates routes are much more individual and self-contained when it comes to chapters. This means the game has to really stretch itself to justify this elaborate setup being brought up and solved in one single chapter of regular length, and itā€™s very apparent when you write out the summary of events here.
Corrin and his army are just walking by when they happen upon the capital of the country. Corrin decides this would be a great place to rest for the night at and are instantly welcomed by its leader, who is also the only person in the game of that country. The entire Hoshidan family also just happen to bump into us because they coincidently came here at roughly the same time, with somehow neither party noticing the other until they were staring at eachother in the same room.
The only thing we know about this new nation weā€™ve never seen or heard about before is that itā€™s a peace-loving land with some sort of neutrality pact which means the two nations canā€™t fight here. What is the importance of this place that would entice all the Hoshidan royals to come over for a banquet in the middle of their country being invaded? Never explained. What exactly is this pact and what power does Izuno have to enforce it, if any? Never explained. Xander, prince of a nation at war and frontline general, has never heard of it. How does Garon or Iago never figure out or look into what happened here, considering the royals walked through their trap unharmed and everybody in charge of the trap vanished? Never brought up.
How many times here was this supposedly major event dependent on coincidences, seemingly important details left completely unexplained, and characters not knowing things that should be basic information of the world they live in? Things like all this quickly build up and make the world feel small scale and artificial, as if nothing truly exists until itā€™s in the peripheral vision of main characters. In a vacuum, this could all be excusable if the main meat of the chapter was just so dense and important that they just want a convenient excuse to delve into it. But about thatā€¦
-Problem 2: Nothing happens, either character-wise or plot-wise.
This is the only scene in both Birthright and Conquest where all eight of the royal families are together in one spot, and theyā€™re unable to fight eachother. What a brilliant idea! How many great scenes could you come up with from this setup alone? How many directions could this move towards?
-The families bonding over their memories with Corrin (X)
-Calling eachother out for uncool actions, like Ryoma refusing to help Elise or Nohr siccing monsters on farming villages (X)
-Working together to defeat some threat theyā€™d have trouble taking down on their own (X)
-Some cultural exchange (X)
-Some melancholy scene where, even if thereā€™s a lot of resentment, they acknowledge how this may be the last time they ever get to have a meal with Corrin. (Somewhat?)
-Corrin sits down and has a mature conversation with his birth family elaborating on their choice to stay with Nohr (X)
-Some negotiation or debate between the two families about the future of their countries relationship, successful or not (X)
-Corrin being formally declared by the Hoshidan royals as a Nohrian, officially cutting them out of the family (X)
So what does Conquest do with this prompt? It does the unexpected route where all of them but Ryoma are shuffled out as soon as theyā€™re introduced, captured offscreen, rescued offscreen, most of their dinner is offscreen, finishing their meal and leaving is offscreen, all of them sans Ryoma have barely any dialog, and none of them are even present in any of the CGā€™s.
We actually start off strong, Ryoma and Xander naturally puff out their chest and donā€™t get along when theyā€™re in the same room, but seem to calm down when Corrin elaborates on how similar they are to eachother. But the game is so eager to get to fighting that it drags Ryoma away kicking and screaming before he even gets to share what he had to say to Corrin, let alone explore what having common ground means to the two of them.
1) I understand this is the Nohrian route so it makes sense the focus is mostly on them, but Takumi only gets three lines here, one of which is ā€œā€¦ā€ Hinoka also only gets three lines, which I think is still more than she got in Birthright, and two of those lines are ā€œYou!ā€ and ā€œWhat are you doing here?ā€. Sakura lucks out as sheā€™s the only sibling on either side who has anything to say whatsoever when Corrin says theyā€™re grateful they could share another meal with the Hoshidans. Thatā€™s a start, but the fact remains Ryoma is the only sibling in the chapter whose remotely relevant, the rest could be omitted and nothing would change. They are only here to be damsels in distress heightening the stakes of defeating the local bad guy rather than providing any character development, checking up on how they are doing without Corrin and Azura, comparing and contrasting their differences between their counterparts, sharing any new information about them, foreshadowing Takumiā€™s possession, any notable interactions with their counterparts, etc. But no, nothing happens.
2) I also understand this is a video game and they donā€™t have all the time in the world before the next fight has to happen, yet Conquest is oddly completely uninterested in itā€™s own set-up. Zola, a minor chapter boss introduced and killed in this chapter, has more screentime and relevance here than any of the siblings, something youā€™d think would be the actual meat of the chapter theyā€™d want to delve into.
The implications and weight of two dueling nations and families obligated to pause their fighting and dine with eachother could easily take up two or even three chapters as a pivotal arc, yet itā€™s completely blazed through as if the game considered it a cute novelty rather than a potential life-changing or history-changing moment. Simply put, itā€™s wasted potential, as if to say ā€œOh both of the two families meeting in a game about choosing between mutually exclusive families? Eh whatever.ā€
I wanna stick with just this chapter and not rewrite a good chunk of the entire story, but I canā€™t stress enough that in any other game this chapter would be the plot-defining moment paving the new way forward rather than chapter 15ā€™s ā€œweā€™ll expose Garon as a monster by helping him invade an innocent people.ā€
Neither of the two families are fighting because they outright want to, this isnā€™t a war about irreconcilable differences or mutually exclusive goals, the only reason for any conflict whatsoever as far as the game has shown us is that the guy in charge of Nohr is a sociopath who threatens to kill his own children at the drop of a hat. Sure, they probably wonā€™t hold hands singing kumbaya after one extended conversation with eachother, but when all of them are in a truce far away from Garonā€™s authority having a meal together, nothing significant comes out of it plot-wise?
In fact, at the end of the day what significance happened here at all?
If thereā€™s no juicy character interactions or exploration, and no setting up future events, then presumably the point of this big moment of Corrin and Xander leaping to save their enemies was made to show off that despite working in the same army, our heroes are indeed better than the swarms of war criminals under Nohrā€™s name weā€™ve seen and would never tolerate such things under normal circumstances. Theyā€™ve talked the talk about disagreeing with their fatherā€™s cruel methods, now hereā€™s proof theyā€™ll walk the walk, arenā€™t they such noble people? The way this is done however, opens up another can of wormsā€¦
-Problem 3: Protags come off as dicks
While our heroes are indeed more likeable and moral than blatant monsters like Garon and Hans, liking peace and disliking war crimes is not enough of a reason for a pat on the back. Our protags might not be burning villages for fun, but itā€™s difficult to take their proclaimed goal of peace seriously considering both the context of working for people who DO burn villages for fun and they way they handle themselves when presented with an opportunity to work on this supposed goal.
Corrin and Azura
Azura in particular is problematic here. During Odovakar 's excellent overview of the problems with Fates writing, he goes into detail about how Azuraā€™s line about ā€œthis is all quite heartwarming. We're like one big family...albeit, a dysfunctional one.ā€ in particular comes off as incredibly tone deaf and tasteless given the circumstances of Azura and Corrin marching on one familyā€™s homeland for the sake of the other family. What I think was also worth noting is the context leading up to that lineā€¦
Sakura: I was just, um...th-thinking...it's really nice to finally see you again. I'm glad you... I'm glad you f-found a way to be happy... Corrin: Sakura... I'm happy to see you too. Sakura: R-really? You mean it?! Oh, Corrin! Elise: HMPH! Back off, you! He/She's my brothesister! MINE! Sakura: Ah! I'm s-sorry! Corrin: Elise! Mind your manners, little one. Elise: But she's trying to take you away from me... She's my archnemesis
Whether intentional or not, this is actually a very clever microcosm of the familyā€™s conflict acted out by the youngest and most innocent among them who probably werenā€™t even born when the conflict started. The Hoshidan loves their sibling, but their time with Corrin is interrupted by the Nohrian shoving them away and declaring Corrin for themselves. This is a great way to challenge our protags to some introspection about themselves.
Azura: Heehee! Corrin: Azura? Did you just...giggle?
Instead, Azura just finds this a real knee-slapper. I understand maybe this is just meant to be a cute image of imoutos fighting over oni-chan Corrin and nothing more, but the context makes it very hard to swallow the narrativeā€™s insistence that all this is ā€œheartwarmingā€ as Azura puts it. Keep in mind that all the Hoshidan nobles are sitting at the same table watching all this. Do you think Ryoma also finds it funny that his little sister is scared off and declared an archnemesis by the daughter of the man who killed his father in cold blood? Do you think Hinoka also thinks it's like one big dysfunctional family when Corrin is preparing to march on her homeland with an army?
I get it, I totally know what they were going for, and in a vacuum it could be a great line making for a properly bittersweet moment. ā€œEven if the two are at eachothers throats and the future is bleak, me and Azura are grateful we get to have at least one big normal dinner together like a real family.ā€
But the future is bleak because of Corrin and Azura participating in an invasion, the families are at eachothers throats partially because Corrin and Azura havenā€™t accomplished anything to reform Nohr. If anything, Corrin should feel great shame here. Elise just unintentionally reenacted the history between the nations where Nohr was clearly in the wrong, and Corrin is sitting directly across and staring at the family whoā€™ve done nothing wrong to him yet are going to be hurt because of Corrinā€™s decision. Grateful they could spend time with them again? Maybe. But cheerful and laughing?
ProZD: D-did an alien write this game? blows gently
But at least Corrin doesnā€™t show outright contempt for the family theyā€™re screwing overā€¦
Xander and Leo
Xander: Corrin! There's no need to insult me like that. I could not possibly be anything like this sorry excuse for a prince. ā€¦ Xander: We will win with honor or die trying. Come, Corrin. Let us go set free our sworn enemy. ā€¦ Corrin: Heh, sorry... It's just that you and Ryoma really are so much alike. If you weren't on opposite sides of a war, I think you could have been great friends. Xander: Yeesh... Do me a favor and keep that nonsense in your head where it belongs. ā€¦ Xander (to Ryoma): We only acted as Nohrian royals should. When we leave this place, you'll be nothing but an enemy to be defeated once more.
Okay, but why? Ryoma is not the one Xander overheard laughing to himself about how much heā€™s going to make Corrin suffer. How are the Hoshidan royals ā€œnothing but enemies to be defeatedā€ here when theyā€™re just trying to defend their homeland from somebody who assassinated their king at a peace meeting? Where is all this contempt from Xander coming from?
Itā€™s perfectly understandable he doesnā€™t get along super well with Ryoma because of the tensions between their nations, that makes sense, but I see no reason for why Xander is making several petty insults to his face unprompted, let alone so nonchalant and even somewhat eager to get back to waging a war Xander himself calls ā€œa senseless war of greed and madnessā€ in the epilogue.
He doesnā€™t treat his own people much better this chapter, declaring Zola and his henchmen as ā€œtraitorsā€ to be ā€œdealt withā€ for their dishonorable methods when ironically Zola taking over the country by disguising himself as the archduke is actually one of the least evil and self-destructive things weā€™ve seen the kingdom do so far. It must be emphasized that every sibling was in the same room watching Garon demand Xander kill Corrin if he interferes with killing POWs for his amusement, and half of them were in the same room when Garon ordered his henchmen to murder every singer they can find in a neutral country. So a few hundred or thousand innocent people, most of whom would presumably be young woman, murdered to snuff out potential assassins. Or Garon directly ordering the deaths of unarmed civilians in chapter 13 with Hans relaying ā€œVillagers are just soldiers who havenā€™t picked up a sword yet.ā€
Xander talks a big game in this chapter about how ā€œweā€™ll win this war with honor or die tryingā€, but how do you honorably win a war when your nation is constantly and openly rushing to pointless overkill brutality like this at every turn? What moral high ground does this country have that Xander is so determined to preserve he kills loyal soldiers over what he sees as sullying it, when at no point in the game does the influence of Nohr ever do anything but make life significantly worse? His sudden fervor towards doing the right thing is completely contrasted later on when Xander is the one telling Corrin thereā€™s no justice to be found in war and you just gotta do what you gotta do rather than whatā€™s morally right, in response to Corrin being upset the Nohrian army is killing woman and children who looked at them funny.
ā€œJustice is an illusion, a fairy taleā€¦Letting innocents die is a tragedy, but so is letting the chance for peace slip away. This is war. There is no such thing as a clean win when lives are on the line.ā€
ā€œJustice is just a fairy tale, innocent people getting screwed over is something we have to accept in war because thereā€™s no such thing as a clean win! But also we better win this senseless war of greed and madness with honor or die trying!ā€
I understand one might get the impression Iā€™m going off topic or selectively picking and choosing quotes here from all over the game, but no matter how you look at it Xanders beliefs, morality, and priorities are just all over the place depending on what the plot needs him to do. This means not only is his motivation for helping his enemies here faulty no matter how you look at it, but it also makes the extreme lengths he goes to do so, killing his own subjects who won him victory on a silver platter because it wasnā€™t a ā€œproperā€ victory, come off as baselessly self-righteous at best and outright cruel at worst.
Iā€™m sure the game would assure us Zola and all his mooks are terrible people who had it coming, but the issue is no matter how virtuous you portray Xander and creepy you portray Zola, Xander is still directly managing the war for a megalomaniac and helping him achieve his goals in spite of his long history of open sadism and public crimes that make Zola look like a saint. By ignoring the clear root cause of Nohr's dishonor while going this hard against random goon's participating in dishonor, instead of being a gallant preserver of morals, he comes off like a bully who selectively picks and choices punishment.
On the topic of punishment, it particularly rubs me the wrong way how Leo just casually mercs Zola at the end, keep in mind Birthright confirms for all his faults he actually isnā€™t a complete monster like Garon and dies trying to help the protag.
Leo (smiling portrait): Youā€™d probably rather die than live with the shame, correct? In that caseā€¦
Zola: Eek! No, please! M-m-milord... I was wrong! S-so wrong! I have seen the error of my ways! P-please...spare my unworthy life!!
Leo (still smiling): Make peace with it, Zola. Perhaps on the other side you will find forgiveness.
Leo makes a fair argument that the stakes are too high and Zola canā€™t be trusted not to snitch, but this is bit sadistic, no? One of the most powerful people in the country is smug and sarcastic as heā€™s getting ready to execute somebody whose bleeding on the ground begging for his life and genuinely confused as to why weā€™re upset with him. I know the intent of ā€œI was wrong! I have the seen the error of my ways!ā€ is supposed to be him saying whatever Leo wants to hear to weasel out of punishment, but thatā€™s exactly the thing, heā€™s fully cooperating and doing everything he can to appease this guy. And then heā€™s just killed like a dog without trial or final words, presumably using the spell that skewers you with tree branches.
Didnā€™t the game use killing defeated foes like this to establish Garon as a bloodthirsty monster? Why is Corrin just standing there watching this happen? This exact same scenario in Birthright has them jump to spare Zola, but here their disapproval is very meek and only voiced after the deed is already done. Itā€™s still apparently too much for Leo though, who chastises Corrin for being ā€œtoo softā€¦I envy your innocence.ā€ And then he declares the matter settled on their behalf.
Iā€™m sure this scene was meant to show off Leoā€™s pragmatism and strategy skills, but it just makes him look like a sociopath and Corrin look spineless. And thatā€™s the biggest issue with this chapter to me, more than the plot being driven by contrivances that arenā€™t explained or the lack of any character development or interesting scenes taking advantage of the setup, the actions and dialog of our protags donā€™t match the noble heroes the narrative insists they are:
These are not the actions of heroic characters.
Summary: Overall, this is a very bizarre chapter. It feels like something meaningful happens here at first glance, your brain sees whatā€™s going on and knows that this is supposed to be a huge moment. Peaceful music playing, a very well-drawn CG of dozens of individual units, liberating a country from Nohrian control, Corrin and Azura are happy and say some lines that sound like they should be deep and impactful.
But when you step back and analyze the bigger picture and context, you find that more or less embodies all of Fates writing, both good and bad. It has a brilliant premise that gets your mind going, excellent presentation to accompany it, and some individual scenes or dialogue in a vacuum are very welcome. If youā€™re a casual player who just wants context for your favorite characters fighting, itā€™s easy to feel satisfied at first glance and move on thanks to those factors, especially since the gameplay and MyCastle are very fun. At the same time, thereā€™s no denying the severe flaws that hamper the experience.
Despite being the hyped-up main draw of the chapter, our exciting premise that opens so many doors is almost completely neglected in favor of (once again) exposition on meaningless settings and characters that arenā€™t relevant anywhere else and also reminding us how evil Nohr is, to the point the chapter title is Black and White. The context makes it very difficult to take the plight of our heroes seriously due to their lack of action (both before and in the present) to achieve their proclaimed goal despite ample opportunity, the proaction they do have being unnecessarily extreme and self-serving, and a narrative that insists they are in the right at every turn despite the results clearly showing us otherwise. Thereā€™s definitely bits and pieces of something great buried in all this teasing us, otherwise I wouldnā€™t be interested enough to write this much all these years later, but as is itā€™s just a mess. An enjoyable mess, but a mess all the same.

But what do you guys think of Conquest Chapter 18: Black and White? Do you also consider it a wreck, or was there something positive here you believed I missed? What would you like to see in a potential rewrite of it?

2024.05.15 17:45 rainbowsparkplug +1 Debacle

So I just learned that my fiancĆ© told his sister (who is a bridesmaid) that she could bring a friend to our wedding months ago. He never consulted with me about this. We had agreed no +1s and couples are social units. This is to prevent people we donā€™t know and wonā€™t be in our lives being there, and to prevent random tinder dates from being brought to our wedding. Itā€™s our day ultimately so we donā€™t want to pay for and spend time with people we donā€™t know and wonā€™t know going forward. We made this decision because everyone will know plenty of people at our wedding. Both our familyā€™s are close knit and there are tons of mutual friends so truly no one would be left alone even if single. For example, both of his sisters are bridesmaids together and are close with other family members who are single as well.
Anyway, his sister was planning on arriving a few days early to help with prep and stuff for the wedding and because we were going to be doing bridal party activities together in the days leading up to the wedding, which was the bridesmaidsā€™ idea. Iā€™m super stoked to spend close time with the women in my life. However, now Iā€™m going to have some random girl I donā€™t know and wonā€™t know going forward joining this close small group time and I feel a type of way about it.
I donā€™t think my fiancĆ© can ā€œuninviteā€ the friend (invites havenā€™t gone out yet but he apparently told her that she could bring this friend, which he says he doesnā€™t remember but believes is something heā€™d do). I just feel hurt that he went against our rules for +1s and didnā€™t even consult with me about adding another guest to our list. Especially because I have done 100% of the wedding planning and he has done 0%, which is fine because I like doing it but I also want to feel respected? And itā€™s no skin off his back because he isnā€™t the one who has to spend the days leading up to the wedding with some random person.
If he uninvited this random girl, then his sister probably wonā€™t like me anymore. I donā€™t want to start off on the wrong foot or have her drop out. I donā€™t even know why she has to bring this friend or why my fiancĆ© said yes without even asking me.
Iā€™m also worried that other people may be offended that they arenā€™t getting a +1 and she is. My fiancĆ© doesnā€™t think this is a problem, but I could see someone feeling a way about this if they noticed it.
I guess I donā€™t know if there is any real solution to this but Iā€™m open to any words of wisdom.

2024.05.15 17:34 SturgeonsLawyer Genres are not mutually exclusive.

This arose out of a discussion of the Police album Ghost in the Machine, but it has much greater applicability.
A genre is not a noun, a thing: it is an adjective, a descriptor. To treat it as a noun is to make it a pigeonhole, which is fine if you're a pigeon. If your first thought on listening to a new album -- or even your tenth -- is, "Well, is it Prog?" -- then you, my friend, are living in a box. Not, to be sure, a cardboard box, but a box that traps your mind.
One feature of adjectives is that they are not mutually exclusive. To take an example from the world of book, there is a series by J.D. Robb that is science fiction, romance, and police-procedural murder mystery all at once. Nothing about any of those genres excludes the others.
In music?
Simple example: George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" can be described by the genres "classical" and "jazz" (and possibly others).
A little closer to our bailiwick, some of you may have heard of the Montreal band NoMeansNo? They were mostly known as a "hardcore" "punk" band, but the words "metal" and "progressive" and arguably "jazz" can be applied to their music without being unreasonable.
Late Genesis: should it be described as "prog" or "pop?" Hint: Embrace the power of "and."
King Crimson's 1980s trilogy. Prog. Punk. New wave. Postmodern. Gamelan-influenced. Polyrhythmic. All of these, and more.
Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return to Forever. Prog? Jazz? Fusion? Maybe all three?
And just think of all the genres you can use to describe any given Gentle Giant album...
In summary: let's not sort our music into neat categories; let's enjoy the fuzziness of adjectives.

2024.05.15 16:43 MightBeneficial3302 The Benefits of Investing in Gold: Why Itā€™s a Good Decision $GLDR

The Benefits of Investing in Gold: Why Itā€™s a Good Decision $GLDR
In the vast universe of investment opportunities, gold stands out not just for its glitter but for its enduring value and historical significance. The allure of gold has not diminished over the centuries; instead, it has woven itself into the fabric of financial stability and wealth preservation. Herein, we delve into why investing in gold is not only a prudent decision but one that could safeguard your financial future in ways that other assets cannot.
Why Investing in Gold is a Good Decision
The decision to include gold in oneā€™s investment portfolio is driven by several compelling factors. First and foremost, gold is universally recognized for its intrinsic value. Unlike paper currency, whose value can be eroded by inflation or government policies, goldā€™s worth is not tied to the performance of a particular economy. This unique characteristic makes it a sought-after asset for those looking to preserve their wealth over time.
Moreover, the resilience of gold becomes particularly evident during periods of market volatility. When stocks and bonds are buffeted by the storms of financial markets, gold often remains a beacon of stability. Its price movements are not directly correlated with those of other assets, making it an excellent tool for diversification. This uncorrelated behavior is a testament to goldā€™s standing as a safe haven in times of economic uncertainty.
Lastly, the liquidity of gold is another factor that contributes to its attractiveness as an investment. Gold can be easily bought or sold in various forms, from physical bars and coins to gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This ease of transaction ensures that investors can quickly adjust their positions in response to changing economic conditions, enhancing goldā€™s appeal as a versatile asset.

Historical Performance of Gold as an Investment
The historical performance of gold is a testament to its enduring value and appeal as an investment. Over the centuries, gold has not only preserved wealth but, in many instances, has significantly appreciated in value. This long-term appreciation is particularly notable when compared to other assets that may depreciate due to technological advancements or changes in consumer preferences.
During periods of high inflation, gold has historically outperformed other investments. Its value tends to rise when the purchasing power of fiat currencies declines, thereby providing a hedge against inflation. This characteristic was notably evident during the 1970s, a decade marked by high inflation, during which gold prices surged.
Furthermore, goldā€™s performance during economic downturns has reinforced its reputation as a safe haven. In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, for example, investors flocked to gold, driving up its price. This flight to safety highlighted goldā€™s role as a stabilizing force amidst economic turmoil.
Hedge Against Inflation and Economic Downturns
One of the most compelling reasons to invest in gold is its ability to act as a hedge against inflation and economic downturns. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of money, diminishing the real value of cash holdings and fixed-income investments such as bonds. Gold, however, maintains its purchasing power over the long term. As the cost of goods and services increases, so does the price of gold, thereby preserving the value of investorsā€™ holdings.
In addition to its inflation-hedging properties, gold offers protection during economic downturns. During such times, investors often lose confidence in traditional assets like stocks and bonds. The uncertainty that pervades financial markets during recessions drives investors toward safer assets, and gold is frequently the beneficiary of this shift in sentiment. Its ability to maintain value when other assets are declining is a crucial reason why gold is considered a cornerstone of a well-diversified portfolio.

Diversification in Your Investment Portfolio
Diversification is a fundamental principle of investing aimed at reducing risk. By spreading investments across different asset classes, investors can mitigate the impact of a poor performance by any single asset. Gold plays a vital role in this diversification strategy due to its low correlation with other financial assets.
Including gold in a portfolio can reduce volatility and improve returns over the long term. Studies have shown that portfolios containing a mix of stocks, bonds, and gold have outperformed those without gold, particularly during times of market stress. This diversification benefit is a key reason why financial advisors often recommend allocating a portion of an investment portfolio to gold.
Tangible Value and Stability of Gold
Goldā€™s tangible nature is another factor that contributes to its appeal as an investment. Unlike digital assets or paper money, gold is a physical substance that has been valued by human societies for millennia. This tangible value provides a sense of security and permanence that is unmatched by many other investments.
The stability of gold is also reflected in its supply. Gold cannot be produced at the same pace as paper money or digital currencies, which central banks can create at will. The limited supply of gold, combined with its enduring demand, underpins its value and makes it a stable investment over the long term.
Protection Against Currency Devaluation
Currency devaluation is a risk that affects all investors, regardless of the currency in which they hold their assets. When a currency loses value, it takes more units of that currency to purchase the same amount of goods or services. Gold offers protection against this risk because it is priced in currency terms. As the value of a currency declines, the price of gold in that currency tends to rise, preserving the purchasing power of investorsā€™ holdings.
This protection is especially valuable in countries with volatile currencies or those prone to inflationary pressures. For investors in such environments, gold can serve as a safe haven, protecting against the adverse effects of currency devaluation.
Tax Advantages of Investing in Gold
Investing in gold can offer certain tax advantages, depending on the jurisdiction and the form of gold investment. For example, some countries do not levy capital gains tax on gold investments, or they may offer favorable tax treatment compared to other assets. These tax benefits can enhance the overall return on gold investments, making it an even more attractive option for investors.
Itā€™s important for investors to consult with a tax advisor to understand the specific tax implications of investing in gold in their country. Taking advantage of these tax benefits can maximize the returns from gold investments and contribute to a more efficient investment strategy.

Different Ways to Invest in Gold
There are several ways to invest in gold, each with its own set of advantages and considerations. Physical gold, in the form of bars or coins, is a popular option for its tangible value and direct ownership. However, it requires secure storage and insurance, which can incur additional costs.
Gold ETFs and mutual funds offer a more convenient way to invest in gold without the need for physical storage. These financial instruments are traded on stock exchanges and are backed by physical gold or gold futures contracts. They provide liquidity and ease of trading but may come with management fees.
Gold mining stocks and mutual funds are another avenue for gold investment. These options involve investing in companies that mine gold, offering potential for dividends and capital appreciation. However, they also carry risks related to the performance of individual companies and the mining sector as a whole.
Risks and Considerations of Investing in Gold
While gold offers many benefits as an investment, there are also risks and considerations that investors should be aware of. The price of gold can be volatile in the short term, driven by factors such as currency fluctuations, interest rates, and geopolitical events. This volatility requires a long-term perspective and a tolerance for price fluctuations.
Additionally, investing in physical gold involves costs for storage and insurance, which can erode returns. Investors should carefully consider these costs and weigh them against the benefits of holding physical gold.
Finally, itā€™s important to recognize that gold does not produce income, such as dividends or interest, which some investors may seek from their investments. This lack of income should be considered in the context of an overall investment strategy and financial goals.
Conclusion: Is Investing in Gold Right for You?
Investing in gold offers a range of benefits, including diversification, protection against inflation and currency devaluation, and stability in times of economic uncertainty. However, like any investment, it also comes with risks and considerations that must be carefully evaluated.
For those seeking to preserve wealth and reduce risk in their investment portfolio, gold can be an excellent choice. Its historical performance, tangible value, and role as a hedge against economic downturns make it a compelling option for many investors.
Ultimately, whether investing in gold is right for you depends on your financial goals, risk tolerance, and investment strategy. By carefully considering these factors, you can make an informed decision about including gold in your investment portfolio.

2024.05.15 15:49 Brahmanda_8 A very deep and never ending existential crisis. Part 2

Hello guys,
A few years ago, I wrote a post here about my existential crisis and I got many very supportive responses and they really really helped me. Iā€™m writing here again with more thoughts that could be a bit all over the place, but maybe some of you will also relate. I trust people in here and I am looking forward to your thoughts, and feel free to share your own experiences.
So, as I mentioned, it has been a few years and I wouldnā€™t say that things got better. I do feel I have depression, I think I had it for most of my life, and Iā€™m mostly just trying to distract myself, I guess like a lot of you guys too. I am trying to accept the fact that questions about the origin of the universe and ā€œwhy, how, and from whereā€ are unanswerable. My next big task is finding the meaning and purpose of my own life. And it is hard guys. I donā€™t knowā€¦
First and foremost, I have seen that a lot of people here mention distraction as a way to cope. But I think itā€™s like a double-edged sword. For example, I feel this deep existential loneliness and sadness every time I read a good book or watch a good movie, series or anime. When it ends, I just feel completely empty. While Iā€™m watching/reading, I feel like I immerse myself into a different fantasy world. Especially when binge-watchingā€¦ And when you finish, there is this ā€œtransition periodā€ when you come back to reality and the world feels so meaningless, boring, dull, no magic, no nothing. So, in trying to distract myself I also cause myself to go through this ā€œtransition periodā€. I guess people who binge-watch might understand what Iā€™m talking about. Distracting helps but only for a short period and after that Iā€™m left feeling completely devastated, and I donā€™t want to go back to the real world. So, I started to analyze more and deeper, why the hell do I feel this way. What is missing in my life? What is so attractive about these stories that I watch/read? And I think I found it ā€“ there is one constant in all of them ā€“ a good group of friends that go through adventures and hardships together (for example some of these realizations came after I binge-watched the famous anime Attack on Titan; or just basically movies or series where there is a mutual goal between characters, for example, in my favorite movie Interstellar there is a group of people with one specific goal and they are trying to solve a very meaningful problem and are having conversations about the universe, etc.). So, guys, could this be it? Humans are social animals, so to have a very good, trustworthy group of people around you and go through life together sounds like what could make life most meaningfulā€¦? But to find such people feels like a very hard taskā€¦ Even finding one person to talk about existential questions is hard, but to find a group where you all could be on the same level of understanding feels insanely hard because not a lot of people think like this. And you canā€™t force such things, finding deep connections as an adult is a hard task. Finding a romantic partner is even harderā€¦ I wish that I could just talk freely about such topics with people, that it would be ā€œnormalā€. I want more people to talk openly about this and not pretend... Also, such a want or need for a group of people might come from the fact that I grew up in a very dysfunctional and toxic family, so naturally there is a need to create my own ā€œchosen familyā€ā€¦ I have some really good friends in my life, but only a few can go a bit deeper with me on such topics, so mostly I am alone in all of this. Sometimes the loneliness is so deepā€¦ It seems others do not feel as deeply this burden of existence as I do. Or that others for some reason donā€™t have this need for knowing why and from where everything comes from, donā€™t see the world for what it is but live in illusions and play games. I guess what I am trying to say is that itā€™s hard to find a person with similar goals and similar motivations (a lot of people have selfish desires and surface-level motivations). And I canā€™t take it anymore, the small talk and the surface-level conversations, I am so bored out of my mind.
I can sometimes minimize this feeling of dullness with some fun and adrenaline-filled activities, for example, I went skydiving and definitely felt a bit better. But such activities donā€™t fulfill that deep need of belonging. On some days I feel so fucking depressed and I hide it from everyone so wellā€¦ I know a therapist can help, especially existential psychotherapy. But I want friends too, to be able to talk to people about this, whenever, donā€™t pay money for it, create genuine connections with people and do things together. For example, traveling to different countries, immersing into different cultures, and exploring is what makes me really live in the present moment, thatā€™s when I feel most alive. And then to have a good group of friends and be able to travel with them and explore might do it for me. But this wish feels like a fantasy.
Another form of escape I use is daydreaming. I would call it immersive daydreaming. I can just close my eyes and start creating stories and narratives. Sometimes I donā€™t even need to close my eyes, it just all happens in my mind. Sometimes this helps me get through the day. But of course, naturally, there comes a want to actually experience what you are daydreaming aboutā€¦
Finding meaning in a profession is a whole nother topicā€¦ I am really struggling to find a purposeful and meaningful job. We live in a time where almost everything has already been discovered ā€“ continents, countries, oceans, there are plenty of researchers almost in any scientific field and the research topics are becoming narrower and narrower. Of course, there is space, but sadly, for space exploration it is too earlyā€¦ So, most jobs feel like a rat race and just take your precious timeā€¦ But there is no other option in this capitalistic society. I have various hobbies that help me be in the moment, so at least that. Of course, we can talk about creating something good for the world and leaving some kind of legacy when you die, but we all know that the earth will also someday die. So, talking about everyday life, maybe itā€™s best to see what is most meaningful to you in the present momentā€¦?

Another topic I wanted to touch upon is these weird and unusual feelings I sometimes have. When Iā€™m ruminating on the nature of existence, I can become so deeply present that I can almost feel the time moving. I feel like Iā€™m too self-aware, too conscious. As if I can feel the earth slowly spin around its axis, almost can see/imagine the atoms. When I think about the universe, I imagine myself from above, from space, looking down below. Like right now I am sitting in my room, that is a box ā€“ I am in a certain country ā€“ on earth ā€“ somewhere in space, and all around is black. I ā€“ a tiny speck of dust. Earth ā€“ a small ball. ~Almost like in~ the scale of the universe (another good example could be the scene from the movie ā€œAgoraā€ where the camera is zooming in from space down to earth to one specific spot, also with that distant soundā€¦ (at 56:13)). And this image appears all at once in my head. And I walk around this world and see myself from two points of view, kind of. Does anyone else experience this? And in general, everything in life seems ā€œdoubleā€ ā€“ like I can see a person and I can also see atoms and molecules that the person is made of. Maybe not ā€œseeā€, maybe itā€™s more imagination or understanding. Itā€™s very hard to explain, but basically, all the things are just bundles of atoms interacting with other bundles of atoms. I can also see this duality in everyday conversations, work, everywhere ā€“ we are all just pretending, we are doing something to live, to move forward, but itā€™s all meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Itā€™s meaningful and meaningless at the same time.
Nowadays I avoid a lot of things, like movies, series, books, media, etc., that are associated with existential questions, because they throw me into that panic/crisis state. Also, everyday stressors take me out of this deeper level of thinking a bit, so these feelings of intense self-awareness come and go. For example, when I was working in a very stressful job the everyday challenges took me out to the more surface-level problems.
The one video that really helped me, but at first, I was really reluctant to watch it, is this one. Brian Cox is so positive and calm. Thatā€™s the kind of attitude I want to have. Sometimes the clichĆ©s also help me, for example, maybe I should be looking at life like a journey and just have a good time? On the other hand, living without a clear purpose is fucking horrible.
So, these were just my random thoughts about searching for what is most meaningful in life and what my experience is like.
Thank you so so much for reading, these topics have been bugging me for quite some time, so itā€™s good to finally write them out. I hope this made some sense.

2024.05.15 15:39 xfallenangelx95 [28/F] Seeking emotional support and highly empathetic people.I would love to find someone who doesn't judge others or make fun of them. It's very Important to have someone to rely on :) I'm here for conversations with emotionally mature people who don't have friends and need someone to talk to šŸ€šŸŒø

(Only Europe, Please) - short note - If you're not into reading or receiving long messages, don't read any further + Please If you don't want to read everything because of my post being too long for you & instead of reading It all - ..skip some parts - find another person to talk to.Let's respect each other and our free time. All people criticizing/making fun of me & other people - will be blocked.Pretty much as people questioning my post and giving me unsolicited advice.I'm not here for any conflicts and I know I can't please everyone - I know I never will.. However It's me who should feel comfortable in my new potential friendship & obviously someone who wants to be my friend - not the whole world.. which is why I don't need any advice from people who don't even want to be a part of my life. The amount of rude people on Reddit always criticizing others and making fun of them is unbelievably high but let me tell you something - NEVER let anyone make choices for you and criticize you only because you're different! Always fight for your dreams and never let anyone make you think you're worthless! It's your life and you're the one deciding what's best for you - If you want to judge me despite not even wanting to talk to me or give me advice better block me! I'm an adult woman and I make all decisions on my own.I'm not trying to "fit in" and be like everyone else - just to get more attention.Accept me for who I am or let go - is my motto.
ā˜…
šŸ¤
Hello guys! šŸ™‚ (read everything before you decide to send me a message) Please send me a message ONLY If you're in the same situation and If your expectations are the same as mine.I want to find like minded people from Europe (Why Europe? Read my post to find out) I'm looking for something permanent (remember - you can feel lonely even If you're surrounded by others - If there's no emotional bond) I'm fed up of meeting people who never make time for me & only text me once or twice a week to ask me "what are you up to?" Out of boredom.I don't want to meet people asking others a million of questions like "what's your favorite movie?" Just to give them one word answer and ask them another question "and music? Your favorite song?" I'm looking for something "deeper" & different šŸ™‚
ā˜…
šŸ¤
What kind of friend would I like to find? Someone to talk to on a daily basis - Someone who needs It & wants It just as much as me
šŸ¤
What are my expectations? I would like to meet someone in a similar situation ā€“ why? Because I honestly feel like only a person with the same expectations and a similar outlook on life would get along with me & because I feel more comfortable talking to people like me..Friendless people who need a strong bond - people without friends and partners.. Don't get me wrongā€¦Most people deserve to be happy and It's good to have friends but people who have friends or families in real life are usually more focused on them (which is completely understandable) & have less time for others + I simply don't want to be replaced by anyone..I kind of envy people who can call others , true friends given I don't have an emotional bond with any of my acquaintances. Please send me a message only If you're not In a relationship and don't have friends for the same reasons I've already mentioned before
ā˜…
šŸ¤
Whenever I hear that others have friends I simply get sad because (believe it or not) If I had to choose between 20 people to talk to (acquaintances) and one special person - I'd choose that one special person without any hesitation .
ā˜…
šŸ¤
I also want to talk to others every day because..I want to see someoneā€™s effort & be someone's first choice - not another person to have random conversations with..some people ask me "Why do you want to talk to people from Europe?" Well..Because I would like to see someone I'd get along with - In the far future - face to face :) + I don't want to wait any longer than 6 hours to receive a message - waiting 6 hours to receive a message is more than enough
ā˜…
šŸ¤
I'm by no means criticizing people who don't want to talk to others often / People who really are super busy & People who want to find someone to have unimportant conversations with - I'm aware that not everyone has the same expectations which is why everything you're reading now - is here for a reason :) All I'm suggesting is - I don't want anything temporary and I don't want to be the one always giving more than receiving.Listen people - I used to ignore being..ignored by others..always being just an option to talk to during tough times or moments of boredom.I was too young to realize that I was never important enough for most people that were a part of my life. I don't know who needs to hear this but..No one is too busy to make time for you! People make excuses to avoid others because they prioritize everything and (maybe) everyone..over them. It's true that most people are busy - but It takes only a few seconds to start a conversation (If you're into short messages) and a few minutes (1-10/15) to type a long message . Don't let anyone lie to you.
ā˜…
šŸ¤
Truth is that most people either don't like you enough to make time for you or just simply - feel no need to talk to others often but are they too busy? No..You don't need to send me a message just to ask me and tell me "Do you really want to talk every day? I like long messages but I can't promise to contact you often" If you really are unsure please don't send me a message.I don't need more acquaintances aka people to talk to - occasionally.
šŸ¤
I'm not trying to sound rude but conversations once or twice a week wouldn't be enough for me and I don't need them... Let me tell you one thing ā€“ A true friend would never just give up on you for no reason :) Itā€™s always possible to find someone to have a random conversation with ā€“ someone willing to send you one message once or twice a week..but..Itā€™s almost impossible to find people willing to make more time for you.
ā˜…
šŸ¤
Iā€™m not asking a busy person to make time for me by changing some plans! Absolutely not! Iā€™m here to find someone who wants to talk daily (throughout the day or maybe even night) of oneā€™s own will.Someone looking for the same kind of connection.Strong friendships are based on mutual support. One of the best things you can do for a friend in need, is just to be there for them when they want to talk.I often see posts from people who always say how friendless they are because they don't feel loved or appreciated by their "friends" remember! A true friend - someone who truly likes you or someone who wants to get to know you - will always find time for you.
ā˜…
šŸ¤
I'm not interested in small talk/short messages - I love long and meaningful conversations. It's so easy to find someone who loves abbreviations and questions like "How are you?" How was your day? Or what are you interested in? But so hard/almost impossible to find a person who knows how to keep a conversation going & show others some effort.Building and maintaining friendships takes time and effort.Never allow pursuits or possessions to become bigger priorities than your relations with other people.Close friendships are so important to us because they are so difficult to form + Having friends can help you feel as if you belong to something that brings purpose and connection to your life
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I do NOT respond to any ā€žHey,hmuā€ or ā€žu want to talk?ā€ type of messages (super short messages or messages full of abbreviations ā€“ I literally canā€™t stand abbreviations and acronyms in text messages) ALL messages full of abbreviations will immediately be ignored.I also don't like it when people ignore everything I say in private messages just to focus on a random question or? When they start talking only about themselves and don't ever ask me anything. I love conversations with people referring to everything I say...I want everything I say and do - to be reciprocated
šŸ¤
ā€¢ No NSFW profiles (checking mental health subreddits NOT included as I'm a huge empath and always try to understand others) - Please! I'm not looking for anyone to flirt with and I'm not looking for a partner either. I always check people's profiles (even comment history) - To avoid guys, trying to get inappropriate pictures from adult women or? flirt with them + I don't want to see you with no clothes on so If you're on Reddit only because you want others to see what's underneath your clothes - I'm not for you! I just simply don't want to see any s e x related activity on your profile If you want to talk to me.
šŸ¤
ā€¢ If both of us (you and I) are from the same country (I live in a non-English speaking country) - I want to communicate with you in our first language! No - Not because I don't understand English - because as you see - I do. Why then? English is simply overrated and people don't appreciate other languages as much as they should. So.. If we're from the same country and you want to talk only in English (which is quite common on reddit) - Talk to someone else. I just don't want to talk to a person from the same country as mine - in a foreign language as It's just something I don't understand even If all you want is to improve your language skills
šŸ¤
ā€¢ Please only adult people 18-36 (age range) It doesn't matter to me If you're younger or older than me (as long as you're not underage) So.. don't worry! I just want to have discussions with emotionally mature people :)
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I donā€™t respond to messages I donā€™t find interesting even If they're long - If after receiving and reading your message I don't feel comfortable or think "I wouldn't get along with him/her" I simply do not respond (what Iā€™m suggesting is that I donā€™t always respond to someoneā€™s first or second message because..sometimes you just know If youā€™d get along with someone or not- Iā€™d never ignore anyone after days or weeks of daily conversations though) just because I donā€™t want to do anything forcefully & because I donā€™t want to lead anyone on. I read all messages but I definitely don't respond to all of them! I want to make it clear because I don't want to be accused of not responding and not reading people's messages! - Some people don't message me back as well and even If It's a bit disappointing I'm ok with that! - as long as there's no emotional bond - Not responding to someone's first or second message Is completely OK! If people think they wouldn't get along with a stranger - is there a reason to start a conversation? I don't think so. I can't stand being ignored after days or weeks of daily conversations and seeing people changing priorities over time.. but that's something different - something I don't want to go through ever again for real. If I'm really interested in someone's message it's impossible to hear from me "I'm too busy" because I know myself and If I had no time for others - I wouldn't be here. I don't want to pretend someone I'm not and always try to find some cheap excuses to avoid others. (unlike most people who don't want to talk to others)
šŸ¤
ā€¢ Donā€™t ask me ā€œCan you tell me something about yourself?ā€ If you really want to get to know me - you can ask me questions :) I'm an open book.
šŸ¤
ā€¢ It would be better If you guys were into emojis - like me - to describe your emotions In text messages. Two emojis - šŸ™‚ and šŸ™ are completely enough! I just don't like emotionless conversations.I also don't like it when people say "yeah" or yea"as it sounds dismissively. First impression Is everything to me! I want to see your kindness even in a text message - Emojis are very helpful to express your emotions.I don't want to meet people who say "crying Is a weakness" - It's OK to cry even If you're a guy!
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I want to talk on reddit first (just to make sure If I'd get along with you) before moving to Discord or some other app
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I would rather talk to a homebody - not another person who always has something to do as people who are very busy don't even have time for daily conversations
šŸ¤
ā€¢ If you're another person interested only in "childish conversations" such as "HEYOOO! I'M BORED! Ya like Pizza or cheese? xDDDD šŸ¤£" I'm begging you! Don't send me a message.I'm not a child anymore and such messages don't make me smile or laugh.I'm looking for someone interested In serious discussions - not another person just seeking some entertainment out of boredom . Conversations with sarcastic undertones (even when It comes to some emojis such as šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚) are not for me. Your typing style matters to me! Why? when It comes to online conversations with someone new - It's not always possible to know If someone Is laughing at you.. or with you. Let me tell you something else! Jokes about cancer, disabilities and death are UNACCEPTABLE to me. If you find joy In someone else's misfortune you are not a person I want to know.
šŸ¤
ā€¢ Time response matters to me a lot! I would never ask anyone to be online all day long and I'm NOT asking any of you for any instant messaging as I'm someone who would rather wait an hour or two to receive a proper response instead of some short and pointless messages but I'm interested only in daily conversations and I don't want to wait any longer than 6 hours to get a message from you.I don't need unbelievably long messages either! Messages as long as the second paragraph of my post - are completely enough. If you like longer messages? you can send me a longer message, but If you want to send me one word or one sentence as a response to my post - don't expect a reaction from me. I don't want to come across as rude - I just don't want to waste your time
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I'm strongly AGAINST picking on people you don't even want to chat with - and making fun of them! I can't stand people who criticize others publicly or make fun of them! (only because they disagree with someone they don't even know) There's no place In my life for someone using Reddit, to hurt other people
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I'm not into foul language and I definitely don't want to talk to people who swear a lot...
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I want to meet assertive people who know what they want and always stand up for their friends
šŸ¤
ā€¢ I want to meet someone willing to call me In the future, someone spontaneously sending me pictures of animals or food, et cetera. I want more than just text conversations.. šŸŒ»
šŸ¤
Why canā€™t you see any of my hobbies listed down below? Because what really matters to me is..who you are (If youā€™re honest, talkative ,understanding, caring and trustworthy ā€“ for example) just simply ā€“ It matters to me what youā€™re like! not what you like.Donā€™t get me wrong ā€“ you can tell me what your hobbies are but from my point of view - people's hobbies are important - If you want to find a gaming buddy or If you want to meet someone to hang out with in real life and..go bowling for example. What most people seem to care about are other people's passions ā€“ I donā€™t. I get along with other people despite having completely different hobbies but I absolutely donā€™t get along with people way different than me (different expectations and outlook on life ā€“ way different sense of humor or personality traits ā€“ Itā€™s just an example) It doesn't make ANY DIFFERENCE to me If you're a gamer or? Someone interested in photography! It doesn't make any difference - > as long as you're talkative and kind and If you also want to find someone willing to stay in your life..for good - But If you're into small talk and all you want is to...type and receive super short messages or If you're here only because you're bored and don't know what to do + If you're a very sarcastic person - I'm definitely not for you! I don't get along with overly sarcastic people turning everything into a joke. Friendships should be natural ā€“ not forced. I wouldn't get along with people who laugh at everything.. In my opinion most people are way too sarcastic.. It's quite sad... Sarcasm can also be another form of passive-aggressive behavior.
ā˜…
šŸ¤
People who want to be to friends should feel comfortable and have something in common. No - not necessarily a similar taste in music or movies but something else..Most friendships don't fizzle out because of people not having the same hobbies but..because they just simply have different expectations when It comes to something important.I'm not here out of boredom and trust me - I'm not here to meet as many people as possible.I choose quality over quantity.I highly value myself and my time & Sometimes one person but a person who makes you feel comfortable and understood - is more than enough :) We ALL can choose what kind of people weā€™d like to talk to and maybe even become really good friends with and I? I donā€™t want anyone to be disappointed. We all have some expectations after all.I know that people don't have to talk as often as possible in order to become friends but I'm interested only in daily conversations. If you really need someone to talk to due to loneliness and If you have time to talk to me daily (throughout the day and maybe even night) I always make time for others.I'm literally always available.I could even stay up all night long only to talk to someone important to me. Iā€™m ready to commit but only If thereā€™s some chemistry between me and someone else.I donā€™t do anything forcefully.
ā˜…
šŸ¤
If you want to talk to me tell me your story - tell me why you're here, what kind of friend would you like to meet :) Et cetera.Such messages are way more interesting to me than...someone's long list of hobbies. I know! It's unusual on reddit but I don't make friends based on hobbies..I want to meet someone with the same mindset as mine to finally feel understood and get close to someone new. You can share your problems with me - I absolutely don't mind "complaining" as I've been through a lot in my life. What do people usually tell you when you tell them that something's wrong? "Don't complain" or "Life's not over yet - one day you'll be happy" or "There are worse situations than yours" and..obviously "Find a therapist" Life's not a fairytale and sometimes things don't go as planned.Emotions shouldn't be bottled up.I'm sick of people always telling others "everything's gonna be ok" move on " & more..Trust me people - not everyone wants to hear "Just believe in yourself and everything's gonna be ok" Some people take it as reassurance - but others? They would rather hear something different šŸ™Imagine being told that things will be okay, only for them to get worse..Do you guys know why telling someone "everything's gonna be ok" Is wrong? Because you can't see the future.
ā˜…
šŸ¤
You can't guarantee others that one day they'll finally be happy + when It comes to social interactions - We're responsible only for ourselves - not others & as you guys know people let us down quite often (sometimes even when there's no reason) so instead of telling people how they should move on, forget everything and be happy or asking them to find a therapist - be there for them! Always be willing to listen to them If you really like them or want to get to know them & don't suggest everyone in a tough situation to find a therapist because even the best therapist won't ever replace a true friend + It's quite normal to be disappointed If people always do something to hurt you. Sharing your hardships with other people in a very similar situation or exactly the same one - is VERY helpful If the other person understands you & wants to start all over by just letting it all out! Feeling emotional support instead of always hearing some "positive quotes" or someone saying "Stop complaining let's talk about something else - Is very important! "Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on. I appreciate sensitive people who always try to understand others. If after hearing a sad story all you want to say is "forget the past and move on" you're not for me. It's important to be a good listener and provide emotional support to others
ā˜…
šŸ¤
Please - If you're a completely different person than the described type of person I'm looking for (If you love abbreviations,If you don't need a stable friendship, If you're sarcastic and quiet) or If you simply disagree with my post - don't force yourself to send me a message.I want my new potential friendship to be natural which is why I want you to contact me only If your needs are the same - I don't want you to pretend someone you're not - only to please me - Pretending to be someone you're not - is the worst.I want to finally be happy again & find someone "always" wanting to talk - sending me random pictures throughout the day - food pictures or pictures of some animals. What is the most important to me? I want to find people who value online friendships as much as they would value real life ones as there's another human being on the other side
ā˜…
šŸ¤
No comments please.Only Private messages and chat requests šŸŒŗ
I know It's possible to meet people with exactly the same expectations as mine but It's just not easy because most people are Interested In temporary and entertaining conversations. People like me are just "different" I really want to finally find someone who loves emojis as much as I do.. someone who loves sweet, warm and serious discussions at the same time. Emojis really do - change conversations šŸ˜Š

2024.05.15 15:34 deathandfawn Nuan Family Theory - MAJOR ACOWAR SPOILERS

A theory I have on the character Nuan, the inventor from the Dawn Court that we meet in ACOWAR, who her family might be and why -
I believe Nuan is also Helionā€™s biological child!!
In Chapter 11 of ACOWAR, Lucien says in reference to Feyreā€™s Day Court light powers: ā€ā€¦ my friend at the Dawn Court has the same power - her light is identicalā€¦ā€. Lucien is talking about Nuan, because when we see her at the High Lord/Lady meeting Feyre refers to her as Tamlin and Lucienā€™s ā€mutual friendā€. Rhys tells Beron, that Nuan is the person who made Lucienā€™s eye. And Nuan admits that sheā€™s been in contact with Lucien to get the faebane samples out of Velaris. We know that Feyreā€™s light powers come from the Day Court, and specifically Helion himself. Lucien also specifically says that Nuanā€™s powers are identical to Feyreā€™s. Not just similar, but exactly the same. To me this hints that Nuanā€™s powers come directly from Helion himself as well, but as her biological father. This is my strongest argument, but here are some other points, and even an argument against this theory:
Nuan and Helionā€™s interactions at the HL meeting are unusually tense. I think maybe one or both of them know sheā€™s his biological daughter. Helion is known for putting on a mask, maybe he was harsh with her to protect her from the other High Lords finding out? Here are some examples: ā€œā€¦ as she (Nuan) studied Helion. And did not seem impressedā€¦ā€; ā€Helion shifted with impatienceā€¦ā€ in reference to Nuan discussing the faebane antidote; ā€Helionā€™s amber eyes flashed.ā€ After Beron questioned whose interests Nuan served.
She did not balk from the High Lords, as an average citizen might, instead she challenged them, hinting that she has great power: ā€œShe did not break Tarquinā€™s stare, and he straightened, as if surprised she did so.ā€; ā€œNuan said to the Lord of Autumn, her chin high, ā€˜I am a child of Prythian. I was born here, on this land, as your sons were.ā€™ā€; She admits freely to Rhys, that she and Lucien went behind his back with the faebane samples, bc they did not want to get his hopes up, not until she found the antidote.
Helion is associated with gold and the sun, and so are Lucien and Nuan: Both Lucien and Nuan have golden mechanical body parts that Nuan invented, Lucienā€™s eye and Nuanā€™s hand. At the HL meeting, SJM made a point to write ā€œā€¦ the sun glinting off her metal hand.ā€ Also, her light powers. We see like calls to like, throughout the series, not just with the cauldron and the Archeron sisters. I think Nuan and Lucien both having golden mechanical body parts, forging a strong bond as friends, and each having a half of Helionā€™s powers (Nuan - light, Lucien - spell cleaving) is significant and points to them being siblings.
Nuan and Helion share similarities, both in looks and personality: Nuan and Helion are both extremely intelligent, a trait that is common in the Day Court. Nuan is an expert inventor and alchemist, Helion and his one thousand libraries are said to ā€œhold the knowledge of the world.ā€ Nuan and Helion both have black/onyx hair. Helionā€™s skin is dark brown, while Nuanā€™s is light brown. I agree that this point is the weakest. This could also be simply explained by Nuanā€™s Xian heritage, as Thesan is described similarly.
The biggest argument Iā€™ve found to this theory is Nuanā€™s own words to Beron after he asks who she is, Nuan says: ā€ā€™I am the daughter of two High Fae from Xian, who moved here to give their children a better life, if that is what you are demanding to know,ā€™ Nuan answered tightly.ā€ However, I think this could be simply another Lucien situation. Or, it could be the case, that she knows Helion is her biological father, but considers the man who raised her to be her true father. There are multiple scenarios. While we do not know Nuanā€™s age, we know she was born before Under the Mountain, because she invented Lucienā€™s eye. The Solar Courts are close allies, so it is not out of the question that Helion was visiting the Dawn Court and could have had relationships with the citizens there.
I rest my case.

2024.05.15 15:28 xfallenangelx95 [28/F] Seeking emotional support and highly empathetic people.I would love to find someone who doesn't judge others or make fun of them.

I don't want to come across as rude - I just don't want to waste your time

ā€¢ I'm strongly AGAINST picking on people you don't even want to chat with - and making fun of them!
I want more than just text conversations.. šŸŒ»
