2024.06.10 02:29 Valuable_Guess_5886 How to effectively explicit teach math to mixed abilities class

I came to realise my explicit teaching is ineffective.
Context: early career teacher, junior secondary composite math class, no textbook. Very mixed class with student level range from prep (learning delayed) to advanced pre-VCE, dozen learning/social needs are present. Low engagement and focus (anything takes more than 3min I have lost them). Math anxiety through the roof.
What is not working - I have been doing a short video (for example math antics), then I do-We do two questions (first two part of their worksheet). For some lessons, I also do hands-on practical activities.
Work is always differentiated (3 options - I am burnt out from planning but this would have to be another post.)
I have to re-teach at the desk with half of the students. It’s like if I’m not 30 cm away they can’t pay attention.
What I found is that even with all of these strategies, for majority of the class (75%) the content is not sinking in.
I’m teaching geometry at the moment and it feel like I have to re-teach the formulas for the circle every lesson.
Please help!

2024.06.09 22:28 SugarCoated111 Why do therapists try to deny the power dynamics?

What I mean is that I’ve had multiple therapists explain tons of times (because I need it) that I’m in control, that we’re equals, that they don’t know better than me and they’re not “teaching” me, they’re in it with me, etc. But that’s inherently not true, so who is benefitting from them saying it?
I was in group therapy and it came up multiple times that people in the group would refer to it casually and sometimes comically as “class” or “school” and the therapist would automatically jump at that opportunity to correct us and say that it’s not school, it’s an open discussion to allow us to talk, that she’s on an even playing field with us and not in a position to “teach” us anything. But she would facilitate the conversation, guide it to keep us on topic, call on people who weren’t talking, hand out worksheets, assign homework, stand up at a board and literally TEACH us skills and concepts, and she decided who was and was not in the group. Those are all things that denotes a power imbalance and is reminiscent of a class. I mean she decided for me that I wasn’t right for the group and kicked me out whether I liked it or not. How is that equal?
My personal therapist keeps trying to tell me that we’re equals, that I’m in control and to get me to stop treating our sessions as if I’m doing something right or wrong as if she’s the one teaching me what is and isn’t right. But that’s exactly what it’s about. She has extensive degrees in this and she’s imparting that knowledge to me. She tells me what is a good thing to do to handle my emotions and what isn’t. She gets frustrated when I’m argumentative and she tells me what to do between our sessions. She teaches me skills and psychological concepts. She’s basically the custodian of my reality- she’s constantly telling me what is and isn’t real when i’m the one who was actually at the event and recounting it to her. And I’m not saying any of this is a bad thing, I have intense anxiety and a personality disorder so I NEED someone to give me a reality check, but how does it benefit either of us to lie and say that this doesn’t give her immense power in the room?
I don’t necessarily mean this in a bad way because I do know it’s to try to get patients to feel in control and advocate for themselves and feel comfortable, but those things can be achieved by being a trusted authority figure, so who benefits from denying the authority? I know it’s true, she knows it’s true, why deny it?

2024.06.09 21:30 Personal_Cost4756 I'm building an Ai app to help teachers and students automate some tasks

Hello everyone
My name’s Souhail, I’m a software engineer student on the final year of graduation and I choose as the final project the idea of “the use of Ai on education”.
The idea of the app that I’m trying to build is to simplify and automate some tasks that a teacher or a student do.
Some of the main features that I came up with are:
🖼️Convert image to Document with the same formatting
🤖Automatically do a search for a topic on educational search engines (example of Google Scholar) and output a full summary that can be editable or exported into PDF, DOC, PowerPoint
🙋‍♀️Upload PowerPoint slides or lesson notes and output a worksheet (multiple choice, short answer, etc...)
🔴Enter a YouTube video or YouTube playlist and output a full educational summary that can be edited or exported to PDF, DOC, PowerPoint
🔗Enter a list of Web URLs of articles and output a full editable summary that can be exported to PDF, DOC or PowerPoint
📃Upload multiple documents and output a summary that you can either edit or export into PDF, DOC or PowerPoint
let me know what do you think, does those features really solve a problem for you? any other features that you always want to have but never found it ? I would love to hear from you.
Thanks

2024.06.09 04:10 sameed_a benefits of strategic planning in education?

Never in a million years did I think I would be teaching a classroom full of squirmy 3rd graders. My corporate background had me more used to boardrooms than classrooms, but a sudden career change led me to the field of education. And boy, was I in for a surprise!
In the corporate world, I relied heavily on strategic planning to ensure the success of my projects. Without a proper plan, things could spiral out of control. It was soon apparent that the same could be said for my adventures in teaching. I remember one particular Wednesday when our principal decided to drop in for a surprise visit. My third graders were in the throes of a sugar-fueled chaos, crayons and worksheets strewn everywhere. I was trying to teach them math, they were more interested in drawing cats.
In that moment, I realized the importance of strategic planning in education. Just as in a business setting, it ensured that learning objectives were met, resources were being used efficiently and the learning environment remained conducive. I began implementing a more strategic approach to my lessons – I defined clear learning objectives, planned engaging activities around them, and tracked their progress regularly. I also used my past experience in problem-solving and decision-making, applying the SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analysis model.
Can I say that everything became rainbows and butterflies? Definitely not. But did it help? Absolutely! My students began to understand and enjoy the lessons more, discipline was better managed, and even my principal was impressed. It was like directing an orchestra, each element coming together to create a harmonious learning experience.
So, if you’re stuck in a rut, or feeling overwhelmed in your classroom, remember the power of strategic planning. It's not just for the corporate world. It can make the difference between teaching a class and inspiring young minds.
P.S.: Before you start thinking I am transformed into a real-life superhero teacher who tamed a horde of feral eight-year-olds, let's just say this is a hypothetical tale. It’s a demonstration of what can happen when we use models like SWOT in our everyday life. So, no cape for me... yet!

2024.06.09 00:38 imavrik Is there a way around the ‘mandatory’ dealer add-ons? North Texas.

I am having a hard time trying to buy a new car. The dealerships are giving me the run around asking me to come over in person for them to be able to give me a break up of the Out of the Door price. And, when I did go to a few of them and after wasting a lot of my time they shared the break up of total costs - even then they wanted me to provide a verbal assurance that I am serious about buying the car and they wouldn’t give me a copy of allow me to take a picture of the worksheet. The whole exchange seems as if like the dealership is about to commit a crime and they don’t want to leave any evidence behind. I never faced this much difficulty when I was in the market for a car the last time about 10 years ago. And, most importantly, every dealer I went to has ‘mandatory’ dealer add ons on the car such as Window Tint/Door Edge guard, platinum maintenance for 3 years, Theft recovery device, Interior and exterior protection plan etc. totaling to almost $$4000. For context this is in North Texas. I asked one dealer if there’s any way I can decline some or all of these add-ons and he told me that these are mandatory per the dealership policy and that I would see the same with other dealerships at a 50 mile radius.
I’m hoping for some advice and work around options to this situation instead of having to cough up almost $4K of money for some useless crap.

2024.06.09 00:08 OKfinePT Why do so many homeschoolers use math workbooks?

Why is everyone using workbooks for math? It’s exactly what regular school does. But school teaches math this way because one teacher with 30 kids cannot worry about actually teaching. Parents can do better.
Khan Academy is munch more interesting and meaningful than workbooks. Everyone should be using that. It’s free. You go at your own pace. The teacher literally asks kids to pause the lesson to try to work it out themselves so that gifted kids don’t get bored and other kids get a more detailed explanation.
But Khan Academy reveals the truth about math which is that if kids are really learning you can’t just send them off to fill in blanks on a worksheet. An adult needs to be there to encourage the kid to stretch themselves.
I go back and forth between this subreddit and homeschoolrecovery and it’s really easy to see how the decisions parents make here lead to the problems the kids talk about over there.
Homeschooling takes a lot of time and resources. I read so many comments that reveal no time (too many kids) or no money (trying to do everything for free) and they all seem to converge in the discussion of math workbooks.
Do you agree? Disagree? Am I misunderstanding the goals of parents here?

Just thought I’d share. If it’s not good quality when you try to save it, shoot me a message! Sorry if the editing isn’t the best either I kind of did this in a rush. I figured Dad and the kids wouldn’t be able to tell anyway 😂
I’d suggest getting it printed on premium paper, cutting, then hole punching on the side and secure/tie with twine so you kind of have cue cards that aren’t gonna get separated.
Happy (early) Father’s Day to all the Bandits out there!

As an analyst that’s been using the platform for a year and a half now the number of worksheets I have has gotten insane.
Obviously these are already bundled into folders but just wondering if there are any plans to have nested folders so that these semi-related folders (e.g. All DWH queries) can be merged into a singular parent folder. Also if there are any other easier ways to achieve/manage this would be interested to hear.

IR5 - 221g after 4 years
Hi , Our mother IR5 case was placed on refusal/ 221g by the us embassy April last year after waiting 4 years for the interview to be scheduled. Case was in DQ since 2020. We all , her children 4 and grand children 8 , live in the United States and US citizens. I decided to file a writ of mandamus now that she had a medical situation and needs care. Soon after the filing I received below email from the embassy.
Is this just a system triggered email or mean the decision is made and mandamus will be moot ? How I can overturn the case . ?.
I am in a bad spot between being caring for her and my kids in TX 😣

2024.06.07 10:41 emapqm_ ESA Eastern Summit Academy / Infocus in Wonju, Gangwon-do

Google Earth coordinates: 37°19'37"N 127°59'07"E
ESA website Link)
ESA Eastern Summit Academy / Infocus Academy in Wonju.
Originally, the hagwon is called ESA but it moved to Infocus but it is still called Infocus ( "New" Infocus as written on the academy van) so the person who hires might give one of the two names. Here are some of the things that scream red flag to me:
Hiring One teacher whose native language wasn't English was hired with an illegal visa, the English degree was not checked, nor was the criminal record. That same teacher got their working contract 2-3 weeks after their first day.. Management only hires people with no experience, but they don’t want to deal with actual training/questions about teaching.
Training One teacher’s training was one week of non-paid work (The training period is actual teaching). But one other teacher’s training period was 3 days paid 75% of actual salary.
Teaching Teachers must come to teach on the same day or the following day of arrival in Korea. Teachers sometimes have to stop teaching in the middle of a class to ride the school van with younger students, leaving the students alone in the classroom, doing nothing. Teaching materials are very boring and last only a month and when one workbook is done, teachers have to wait 2 to 4 weeks to receive the new one. Teachers are given science, art, and maths books to teach to the students. Teachers have no time to lesson plan, or even to print any worksheet as there is only one PC and one printer for 6 people, including the owner. Teachers have to report every class to the parents through the classnote app but they can’t do it during working hours because they are so busy. Teachers usually stay 30 minutes more to write and send the reports. Those 30 minutes are not paid.
Salary Salary always comes few days late.
Working hours and break time Full-time teachers work more than 40 hours/week: 9:00 am to 6:30 pm. Part-time teachers don’t get the 30-minute mandatory break time. Moving day (From ESA to Infocus) was done on March 1st which is a red day and teachers weren’t paid.
More One teacher’s given accommodation had no bed and had to sleep on the floor for a few days. Communication between management and teachers is inexistent, teachers get scolded a lot for not following rules that were never stated, nor orally or in the contract. One teacher got scolded in their classroom in front of the students. Teachers don’t have any teacher room, or somewhere to relax between classes.
