2022.12.26 17:33 Comfortable_Swim_884 43th Day F2p Progression Update + Ancient Altar Cleared(Teams)

43th Day F2p Progression Update + Ancient Altar Cleared(Teams)
Update to my 30 Day F2p guide : https://bit.ly/3FlaEv5 F2p Mid-game update(Day81/Week11)- Pvp/twilight lands teams/guide : https://bit.ly/3l6yDHX My SSS Tier list : https://bit.ly/3jc4whz Decided to update now because i just cleared ancient altar(3 key hell,1hard,1norm) and want to show what teams i used. Might be last update because after this it's pretty much do dailies, events, save tix for recruitment events and open up your roster. Nothing too spectacular for beginnemid game players.
Also insane amount of power comes from guild tech, remember to join a strong active guild and do your guild hunts, for tech im maxed for Hunter(ATK/C.dmg), Support(HP), minimium level 5 everything, working on Tank(HP) next. **Skip to bottom for ancient altar teams

Still F2p, Merry Christmas! :D
43th Day
Replaced Artas with Oak, Better pure tank, Front Serena absorb some dmg because they hurts + faster ults
Hero Box(2 genes left) :
Ex30 - Emma, Ex 29 - Masa(Will be 30 after twilight rewards or somewhere idk)
Ex20 - Taylor, Serena, Senway, Randall, Artas
Ex10 - Nagra, Bot Mark ll, Hercules, Oak, Bohr, Muka, Daniel, Leo
Rule of thumb is you probably want to ex the heros you use alot, as you cant get them back forever, use them wisely !

b1
b2
Galactic Arena Team
https://preview.redd.it/c27kgofsjtfa1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=163bcfc8bebee0de0b045f4c7c8b3fd6bf8f4f1e
1st - Gautier + Pain rune + Flashpoint with displacement heros + Masa to proc flashpoint if possible 2nd - Double tank + 3dps with a little cc from bohsorie 3rd - Double tank + healer + 2 dps, Only cc from Oak when enemies normal attack him, just pure power tank + dmg team, Oisa/aniru too low evolved to replace artas/botmark ll CC is king other than power in PVP, dont let CP fool you
3Key hell,1Hard,1Norm
Aim for 2key Hell,1hard,1norm,1easy for maximum tix
Ancient Altar Team
1st boss - Revanna sacrifice
At my stage, this boss melts everything that i cant get even 1 bar without healer, but not worth prio this boss as 2nd and 3rd boss is where you do damage, this boss only reduces the damage you take. Always prio 3rd > 2nd > 1st
2nd boss - Summoner with serena frontline
Try to get as many bars as you can, more bars you take = less shield AND shield time, i am able to take off 2 bars with this team. Serena just survives and the rest is dps check, also get new SSS commander, i couldnt get any better ones over this
3rd boss - Best dps team with masa healer
Artas + bot mark ll for the debuff, emma + taylor dps, masa sustain. How to pump min/max dmg with manual -
  1. Manual taylor to the right side then turn auto back on, keep him within range of masa heal, so masa will heal everyone in the circle
  2. Only artas will be on auto, rest all manual
  3. Only ult bot mark ll(def break 1st) + emma when shield is gone(shield time depending on 2nd boss, you can click on shield icon to see, 0 shield if you down it)
  4. Ult masa so that he heals everyone, auto doesnt do it . Auto vs manual is literally millions of dmg gone, very important.
I do post this on EE discord(#creative-guides) if you want to dm can find me there or comment below for any questions Merry christmas and a Happy new year, Cheers :)

2021.10.09 10:57 stripiesttable Newbie needs some help

After some advice trying to follow this guide: https://github.com/oscam-emu/oscam-patched/wiki/Building-OSCam-Emu
I use the make USE_LIBCRYPTO=1 command
[gary@fedora oscam-patched]$ make install
make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.

All files get installed on my home directory, so I have compiled the program but how do I install it?
Do I have to manually copy all of the files to /uslocal/etc? I will be honest here I am lost
I could just throw the towel in here and go back to ubuntu where I had it working but I would rather struggle tbh
Speak to me like i am 5, honestly I literally know next to nothing

2021.06.29 16:19 cinekat Soundreel from hell

I never used to go to church. Our family always focused more on Santa Claus than the birth of Christ, if you know what I mean. That changed back in the 90s. For me at least - my sister is a half-assed Wiccan now, and my mom does yoga - but me? I go to church. I never thought I’d talk about what happened that night, not outside a confessional at least, but I just saw something that made me change my mind. I’ve changed all the names though, so don’t even try to look for me … or the footage.
I was a junior, majoring in film and working on various shoots for student projects, lending a hand with the 16mm camera or the Nagra sound equipment. We didn’t have digital back in the day, and it was a great way to get experience on someone else’s dime. I was returning sound equipment at the lab one afternoon, when Ryan grabbed my shoulder.
“Buddy, dude, see if you can reserve the Nagra again for next weekend!” he whispered excitedly. “I got us a paying gig.“ “Paying?” I asked. This was unusual. No one got paid on student films, we all worked on each other’s projects for free in the hope that one of our classmates turned out to be the next Tarantino and we could ride his coat-tails all the way to Hollywood. Ryan, unfortunately, was no Tarantino, just another kid from Connecticut trying to grow a beard.
“Yeah, man,” he said “an overnight shoot. On location.” “Will we get a credit?” I asked. Getting my name in the credits of an actual film was everything, even on the B-roll sound crew. If the film made it to a festival, I could build my entire CV around it. “I don’t think so”, Ryan said, “But c’mon, it’s 200 bucks each!” Technically, we weren’t allowed to borrow college equipment for commercial use but I could sure use the cash, so I reserved the Nagra again and arranged to meet Ryan and the other crew in front of my dorm next Friday afternoon.
Friday was warm and muggy, clouds hanging low. I picked up the Nagra and packed reels of tape, WD40, Gatorade and granola in my daypack. Ryan hadn’t mentioned craft services and I wasn’t taking any chances. Not on an overnight shoot. A beat-up station wagon pulled up, Phish blaring through the drivers’ side window, out of which Mike dangled his cigarette. Ryan sat next to him in the passenger seat, struggling with a Michelin road map that filled me with foreboding. For a guy who could describe every cut and camera angle in a Hitchcock film, he had no sense of direction. I could see someone slumped in the back seat, but it wasn’t until I opened the tailgate to dump my shit in with the camera equipment that I recognized Aubrey’s green hair. She nodded as I climbed in next to her, with a “‘Sup, Buddy? I’m your boom girl.” So she would be helping me with sound, and since Ryan would never hand over camera control willingly that meant Mike would be pulling focus for him.
I wondered who was directing – and what – when Mike caught my eye in the rearview mirror and gave a lazy wink before hitting the gas. “Westward motherfuckin ho”, he drawled. “Where are we headed?” I asked as I tried to get comfortable in the bucket seat. “Buttfuck nowhere, man” Aubrey yawned, “better catch some Z’s while we can.” And with that, she curled up like a cat and closed her eyes. I stared out the window as we crossed the bridge, through the suburbs and onto the freeway. Then, lulled by Mike’s off-key crooning and Ryan’s curses as he crinkled the map, cigarette smoke in the air, I drifted off as well.
I woke up with a jolt as we turned onto an unpaved road, bouncing my head off the side window. “Ow”, grumbled Aubrey, then grinned wryly as she turned and saw me rubbing my temple as well. “Are we there yet?” I imitated a whiny kid while the others laughed, but I realized it was late afternoon and I had no idea where we were –or who we were going to meet once we got there. I leaned forward. “Ok Ryan, for real, what’s the story? Do we know what the set-up is going to be? I don’t want to stress about losing the light.” I hadn’t seen any lighting equipment in the back other than a few reflectors and 2Ks, and I wanted us to look good when we met the director. “Yeah man, we need to talk filters.” Mike added.
“Ok so, um, this is going to sound a bit weird…” Ryan began uncertainly. Aubrey sat bolt upright. “I swear to God, if you’ve signed us up to shoot porn I’m going to Bobbitt your ass!” she told him. “I don’t think it was his ass ole John was worried about”, joked Mike, whom we all ignored. I looked outside. We were one a one track road, dense forest on either side, and I hadn’t seen any sign of civilization since I’d woken up. “Are we shooting exteriors?” I asked. “Some nature thing?” I trailed off, wondering if I should’ve packed bug spray. Or bear spray. “Not exactly….” Ryan said, “it’s more to document something for an organization… Wait, I think this is it!”
“It” was a ramshackle house with a wraparound porch, only one upper story window lit. A dusty truck was parked out front, and next to it a big black sedan which clearly didn’t belong. I could make out a figure by the front steps, shadowy at first until Mike caught it in the headlights. What the fuck? A priest?
“Dude…” Mike said as he swung in next to the pick-up. “I’ll explain in a sec”, Ryan said, and hurried over to the priest as we sat in the parked car. Aubrey was the first to react. “C’mon guys,” she said as she scrambled out, “nearer my God to thee and all that crap”. Ryan stood by the steps, conferring with the priest, who looked up from his smoke when we joined them. I couldn’t tell how old he was; his hair was greying but he carried himself like a guy our age.
“Ok, so we’ll set up our gear downstairs and then come upstairs to meet you!” Ryan said hurriedly, wrapping up whatever conversation they’d been having. The priest nodded gravely, then made eye contact with each of us for an uncomfortably long time. “Before you enter,” he rasped, “I need your assurance that each one of you has been baptized”. A stunned silence, broken by Audrey “Ummm…. Does Lutheran count?” That cracked Mike up for some reason and Ryan glared him into submission before looking at me. “Catholic. I mean, I was. Still am, I guess. Lapsed.” I babbled, the weirdness of it all sinking in, the dark woods, the old house, the priest. The oncoming dark.
The priest nodded and disappeared through the dark doorway; our eyes followed him before snapping back to Ryan. “Ok, what gives?” Audrey asked. “What have you gotten us into?” Ryan shifted uncomfortably before blurting out “Ok, it’s an exorcism”. He began waving his hands at us, as though to ward off the protests we were too shocked to make. “I know, I know, it’s weird as fuck, but my aunt is a secretary at the church and when she heard they were bringing in an expert and were looking for someone to document it for their archives or whatever…”
“Whoah…” Mike said slowly, shaking his head in disbelief. Audrey looked up at me with a did-we-really-just-hear-that expression. I just stood there, dumbfounded, listening to the wind in the trees and waiting for some frat boys to jump out and yell “Pranked!”. We all just stood there uncertainly in a ragged circle. But then Ryan shooed us to the car and as we unpacked and began setting up in the front room, the routine of loading the camera, setting up the 2K lights, fitting the boom and adjusting the Nagra made it feel like any old project, any other shoot.
It wasn’t until we hauled our gear upstairs and crowded into that one lit room, it wasn’t until we saw the bed and what was on it that reality came crashing down. It was a woman in a stained nightgown, long stringy hair covering half her face, wrists and ankles tied to the bedposts. Audrey gasped and pulled out her Gerber to cut the woman loose, and I was about to step forward to help – phrases like kidnap and sex trafficking floating loosely through my brain – when the woman suddenly reared up and snarled.
Her eyes… my God, her eyes were like black maelstroms. Spittle flecked her cheeks and her back arched to a degree I didn’t think was humanly possible. My mind seemed to splinter. She – it – was no longer human. This was something else entirely, something that had taken human form but was nonetheless inescapably, inexplicably alien. At the same time, another part of me registered Mike setting up the lights and Ryan clicking the camera into place on the tripod. That part of me picked up the Nagra case and placed it on a dresser near the door, signaled to Aubrey to get the boom mike cabled up and got to work. Business as usual. Moving right along. Nothing to see here.
Except there was. The room was sparsely furnished with just the old dresser, a lopsided wardrobe, and the bed – oh God, the bed. I tried not to look at it – at its writhing, keening occupant – and instead focused on the others in the room. Mike had set up the 2Ks and was kneeling by the lens case. Audrey had automatically taken up position near the bed, boom mike held up with both arms, the fuzzy microphone hanging down between the priest and… it. Ryan was at the tripod, at the ready. “Roll sound!” he mouthed, gesturing with his hand. I nodded and mouthed back “Rolling!”. Then we all jumped when Mike clacked the clapperboard with a loud crack, saying “Roll one, take one”.
I like to remember them that way, my friends. Just a bunch of 19 year-olds trying to grow up, to be somebody. I try to hold that image in my mind. Sometimes I even succeed. That night, I kept my eyes on my equipment as much as possible, reloading sound, checking the dials, trying to keep the level in check. Or pretending to at least – what was coming through on my headphones was bad enough. I didn’t need visuals.
The priest’s voice was ragged but steady, he sounded close to cracking but determined. Only the hitches in his breath between the Latin phrases gave away his nerves. The thing in the bed was a nightmare to listen to. High-pitched shrieks set my eardrums throbbing, only to be replaced by throaty whispers I could barely catch. I didn’t understand any of what came out of its mouth, but the vocals dripped with guttural hate. The bedsprings groaned and I heard what sounded like bones snapping as it howled with rage. I just kept my eyes on the levels, pretending none of this was real, that wardrobe and make-up were in the other room and once Ryan yelled “Cut!” we’d all laugh and break for coffee and sandwiches.
One thing you don’t consider when you watch horror movies is the smell. The stench of it. The air was dank with sweat and piss, and to this day when I walk into a gas station bathroom and get a whiff of old excrement, my skin crawls and I feel a chill. I kept my eyes on the Nagra and breathed through my mouth and prayed this would be end soon.
“It won’t… it will never end…” came the faintest of whispers through my headphones, almost gleefully. It’s nothing, I thought. Just a response to whatever the priest was chanting. But the priest stopped and for the first time since we entered, silence hung in the air. The unnatural stillness was broken by the filthiest chuckle I’ve ever heard. “It won’t end, you mouthbreather, my voice will be in your ears til you croak, BUDDY.” I gasped and looked at the others to see if they had heard it too. They had, and were looking back at me in shock. But we hadn’t heard nothing yet.
“Ry-an” creature on the bed lilted almost playfully, “Oh Ry-an, why don’t you tell the good Father and your little friends how it made you feel when Mommy gave you a bath? Or when she let you rub the sunscreen on her? What do you think of when you’re all alone and rub… rub… rub…” Ryan went white as a sheet – a lot whiter than her sheets for sure – and whispered “Shut up shut up shut up shut up!” His hands fell to his sides, the camera with it. The thing in the bed cackled and cocked its head at Audrey. Oh no, I thought, not her. Please don’t come after her. But it didn’t get the chance.
Audrey, still holding the boom aloft like some spear-wielding Amazon, was looking at the bed with… awe? “Coooool!” she breathed. The priest turned to look at her in alarm while the demon seemed almost taken aback. “No, I mean, guys this is seriously cool!” Audrey said, as if she’d just discovered Doc Martens on sale. “Don’t you guys get it?” she looked at each of us in turn, actually beaming. “I’ve never believed in anything, even as a kid I thought it was all bullshit, but you guys, if this is real… If demons are real, doesn’t that mean God is too?” The thing on the bed recoiled and hissed so loudly it was like static crackling through my headphones. The light from the 2Ks glowed more intensely for an instant and the priest’s face beamed, he almost looked younger.
The demon recovered and regrouped. It looked past Ryan, still frozen in place, to Mike standing there, clapperboard at the ready. It took a sharp breath, then laughed to itself softly. “Oh Mike. Mikey Mikey Mikey. Never knew your Daddy, didja?” it drawled in a cruel imitation of his twang. “Momma wore that cheap wedding ring but it didn’t fool the neighbors and it certainly didn’t fool you. You’re a bastard, Mikey, a dirty bastard, aren’tja and YOU WERE NEVER BAPTIZED!”
What happened next happened all at once, really fast, and yet I remember it in slo-mo snippets. The priest, taking a step towards Mike with a look of terror, pushing Audrey aside. Ryan, raising the camera in a backhand swing, yelling “Don’t talk about my mother, you bitch!” The priest, stopping in his tracks to focus on Ryan, to stop him from bringing the weighty 16mm camera down on the possessed woman. Ryan, catching the priest with a glancing blow to the head. Mike, howling and clutching his head with both hands. The priest, crumpling to the floor, lying unnaturally still next to a startled Aubrey, his neck looking … wrong somehow. Mike, running from the room, his wails echoing down the stairs and fading into the night. Ryan bashing the camera full force into the demon’s head just as it ripped one hand free and gouged his neck with talon-like nails. And Aubrey.
Aubrey, remembered in stop-motion freeze frame. Aubrey at my side. Aubrey, her hand in mine, pulling. Aubrey on the stairs, looking back at me, behind me. Aubrey in the yard, still pulling me forward. Aubrey at the car, slapping the spare key from behind the visor. The film of my perception sputtered to a stop, faded to black then whirred back sometime later, 24 frames per second. Normal. Well, almost. Aubrey had drying blood spattered on her face, neck and clothes. And I was still wearing my headphones, white-knuckling the Nagra in my lap.
Aubrey left school the next week, though I didn’t find out til later. I was too busy trying to convince myself it had been a bad acid trip, or some fucked-up student performance art. Ryan never made it back to campus. Neither did Mike. Ryan’s room was cleared by his parents, and the obituary in the college paper vaguely referenced a tragic accident. Mike’s roommates ended up tossing his stuff at the end of term. No official enquiries were made; I guess people just assumed he was the usual stoner drop-out. The weird thing though was that the camera and lights had been returned to the lab. I returned the Nagra and headphones myself, and never signed them out again. I burned the sound reel without listening back to it.
30 years later, I still see Aubrey from time to time on the church grounds. She goes by Sister Anne now, and I doubt whatever hair she has under her wimple is dyed green. We don’t stop to chat but she always smiles at me, a ghost of the grin I remember from our college days. And me? I work in IT repair, and it’s going pretty good. I refuse to fix audio components though. I have a problem with headphones. Ear buds too. No matter what I listen to, there’s always an underlying sound, something I can barely make out but undeniably there. Something malevolent.
That’s why I go to church. And it helps. Mostly. You see, I walked out of mass today and looked around for Aubrey, who I hadn’t bumped into for a while. I didn’t see her. But I saw someone else. A figure across the street, in the shadows, staring right at me. It looked kind of like Mike. And he had maelstroms for eyes.

2020.09.18 19:28 ifthisisausername 15 underrated and underground prog artists who are awesome and deserve more love here (Part Seven)

Greetings, fellow prog fans! I come bearing gifts of underrated music! My list of bands to include in these posts grows faster than I can actually write them, so I’ve included a few more this time. Most of these bands have fewer than 1,000 Spotify listeners, some under 100; that’s right: we’re going underground! Hope you find some new music to listen to here, and feel free to discuss any of these artists or other underrated artists in the comments! You can find links to the previous posts in this series and a Spotify playlist at the end of this post. Happy listening!
FFO = For Fans Of
.
Luna’s Call (FFO: Opeth, Wilderun, BTBAM, Be’lakor, Persefone) [Mixed vocals]
Luna’s Call are making the most creative extreme prog/prog death I’ve heard in ages: an Opethian foundation with BTBAM unpredictability, moments of symphonic grandeur, sections of tech-death intensity, and classic prog flourishes. They give you more riffs and transitions in one song than most artists manage in an entire album and it’s exhilarating to see a band as exemplary as these guys emerge from seemingly nowhere. Their second album Void came out last month and it’s a strong AOTY contender.
Start with: Signs, Divinity, Fly Further Cosmonaut
.
Egor Lappo (FFO: VOLA, Haken, Devin Townsend, Dream Theater) [Mostly clean vocals]
Russian singer-songwriter Egor Lappo is another one of those brilliant one-man projects (with occasional help from others, of course). The layered production and some of the chord choices evoke Devin Townsend, there’s a VOLA style balance of lighter ambience with heavy riffs, and some more adventurous forays into Haken-esque playing and melodies. Lappo has two albums and an EP to his name, each of which has its own distinct flavour.
Start with: Moonlight, The Perfect Star, Faded Morning Sun
.
Rannoch (FFO: Rivers of Nihil, Black Crown Initiate, Fallujah, Persefone) [Mixed vocals]
Rannoch are prog-death’s best kept secret. Hailing from the UK, the solos are face-meltingly fluid, the rhythm section is a well-oiled machine, and the unswerving progression of their tracks is a joy to behold. And they’re unafraid of showcasing their softer side with sublime atmospheres and occasional cleans. Their 2020 album Reflections Upon Darkness is an unstoppable juggernaut of distinctive prog death which culminates with a suite of tracks based on Byron’s epic poem Darkness.
Start with: De Heptarchia Mystica, Age of the Locust, The Hanged Man
.
Tanagra (FFO: Vanden Plas, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, Haken, Falconer, Seventh Wonder) [Clean vocals]
Tanagra received more attention than a small Portland symphonic powerprog band might anticipate when the parent company of Nagra speakers tried to sue them in a trademark dispute which was ultimately settled amicably and in favour of the band last month. Anyway: Tanagra offer a measured cinematic take on power metal, with baritone vocals, symphonic arrangements, epic runtimes and more emphasis on the prog side of things, blending in the heavier and slightly folkier sound of older bands like Blind Guardian; it’s power metal for people who don’t usually enjoy power metal.
Start with: Meridiem, Silent Chamber, The Undying Light
.
Josh Middleton Project AND Passages (FFO: JMP is just awesome instrumental prog, they cite a lot of ‘70s influences but there’s Liquid Tension Experiment in there and more trad metal; Passages has Neurosis and Cult of Luna vibes) [JMP: Instrumental; Passages: Mixed vocals]
These two brilliant projects from Sylosis frontman Josh Middleton are incredible but hard to rep because, apart from the tracks below, they’re not on any streaming services and only available for purchase from Middleton’s website. However, they’re both fucking sublime and worth the money. JMP’s Hollowed-Out Planetoid is a spacey instrumental journey with proggy compositions and jaw-dropping virtuosic playing (and it’s my favourite instrumental album), whereas Passages leans on the doomy post-metal side of Sylosis’ sound, evoking moments of Neurosis and Cult of Luna.
Start with: JMP - Persistent Illusion of Transients, the Hollowed-Out Planetoid trailer (it’s not a song but it plays some clips from other tracks on the album, there was only the one track available to listen to); Passages - Lucid, Ghost Psalm
.
The Psychedelic Ensemble (FFO: Steven Wilson, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Yes, ELP, Renaissance, general classic prog rock) [Clean vocals]
The Psychedelic Ensemble is the project of an anonymous New York-based multi-instrumentalist who boasts forty years of experience in the music industry and over 20 ASCAP awards (give us your wild theories as to this mysterious musicians’ identity in the comments!), and it shows: this is some of the coolest traditional prog rock I’ve heard: virtuosic at every juncture, with some female vocals on later albums, and replete with synth/organ solos, p s y c h e d e l i a, grandiose symphonic sections, and a sense of constant evolution. They have six albums, only three of which are on Spotify.
Start with: Humpty Dumpty, The Golden King, The Sunstone
.
Aeons (FFO: Opeth, The Ocean, Anciients, Sylosis) [Mixed vocals]
Aeons are a Manx (from the Isle of Man) band who mix prog death and sludge to deliver atmospheric, narrative-driven, heavy awesomeness. There’s a bit of Josh Middleton (Sylosis) and Robb Flynn (Machine Head) in the vocals, while the riffs balance Mastodon and Opeth vibes, yet none of these comparisons really capture their sound. Debut album A Tragic End showcases a hell of a lot of potential, as does lockdown demo Evelyn. Aeons are ones to watch.
Start with: Evelyn, A Tragic End, Vengeance
.
Protean Collective (FFO: Caligula’s Horse, VOLA, The Pineapple Thief, Uneven Structure, Umpfel) [Clean vocals]
Protean Collective contrast heavy instrumentation with somewhat ethereal vocals. It’s difficult to compare their sound to anyone else (hence the somewhat random FFO above), and yet they feel reassuringly familiar. The riffs do some djenting, there’s catchy chorus hooks and sublime solos, and there’s an unusual tension present in the soft vocals. Even though they’re definitely best described as heavy prog, something about them gives me a noughties pop-rock vibe. Basically, I don’t know how to describe them, but they’re cool as hell and deserve more listeners.
Start with: Beneath the Surface, The Red and the Grey, Shadows
.
Neck of the Woods (FFO: After the Burial, The Human Abstract, Whitechapel, Textures, Born of Osiris) [Harsh vocals]
Neck of the Woods are a progressive metalcore group who introduce a touch of death into their compositions. It’s intense stuff with frenetic blast beats, guttural growls, and facemelting solos, but amidst that brutality they manage to find sublime melodies, anthemic sections and some surprisingly good bass playing. The Annex of Ire dropped in March and is massive, building on the foundation built in debut record The Passenger.
Start with: The Annex of Ire, The Tower, You’ll Always Look the Same to Me
.
Maestrick (FFO: Cheeto’s Magazine, early/weird Haken, Dream Theater, Ayreon, The Dear Hunter, Seventh Wonder) [Clean vocals]
Brazillian maestros Maestrick offer an eccentric take on trad prog, with the creativity of Ayreon and the weirder flourishes of Cheeto’s Magazine. They cite surrealism as an influence and it shows in the zanier sections and use of a few somewhat unusual instruments. Expect a buttload of synth, a ton of transitions, excellent musicianship, and a lot of happy major-key nuttiness. They’re currently working on a follow-up second part to their excellent 2018 concept album Espresso Della Vita: Solare.
Start with: I A.M. Living, Across the River, Aquarela
.
Naeramarth (FFO: Ihsahn, Leprous, Enslaved, Agalloch, Xanthochroid) [Mixed vocals]
Naeramarth is the versatile project of Gage Love who writes, sings, plays, records, and mixes. Best described as atmospheric black metal, the vibe and harsh vocals (contributed by Paul Black) do what you’d expect, but at times Love’s instrumentation and cleans borrow from Leprous, much like Ihsahn’s later work. He’s only released one album, The Innumerable Stars and it’s an incredibly confident debut with a lot to offer; even if the FFOs don’t appeal, the track Luminous Beings is prog perfection.
Start with: Asterisms, Luminous Beings (featuring Jørgen Munkeby and Lennika Wright), Lunar Sea
.
Transcend (FFO: Haken, Caligula’s Horse, newer Opeth, Dream Theater, Spock’s Beard, Altesia) [Clean vocals]
Canadian trad proggers Transcend released their debut back in 2011 and then nothing until 2020’s Balance I (presumably meaning a Balance II is in the works). They pack in all the versatility and grandeur that you would expect of a band showcasing the best of trad prog: a nice dose of synth and piano, long runtimes, some really creative sections, and rather Haken-esque vocals. They’re more on the prog rock side of that Dream Theater sound but nevertheless brilliant.
Start with: Disillusion, A Parallel Reflection I, Moment of Infinity
.
Lör (FFO: Wilderun, Wintersun, Borknagar, Orphaned Land, Arcturus) [Mixed vocals]
Hailing from the frozen wastes of, um, Philadelphia, Lör continue in the folk metal tradition of crafting uplifting epics that sound like the soundtrack to Viking battles fought over scenic fjords: unrelenting riffs, piercing solos, moments of black metal intensity, and catchy-as-hell melodies, are just some of what awaits in their discography. Their latest release Edge of Eternity dropped earlier this year and it slaps.
Start with: Upon a Withered Heart, Visions of Awakening, Ruin
.
Telergy (FFO: Liquid Tension Experiment, Dream Theater, Spock’s Beard, Ayreon) [Mostly instrumental and choir]
Telergy is the project of multi-instrumentalist Robert McClung and takes concept albums to the next level. His epic compositions are interspersed with short scenes of dialogue forming narratives based on historical events, with the music furthering and complementing these stories. The music itself is like an epic soundtrack with Dream Theater style musicianship, huge symphonic arrangements, and an impressive roster of guest musicians, while utilising a wealth of non-standard instruments. Telergy is also a non-profit project, donating the proceeds from each album to charity.
Start with: Infantry, Astronomer, Accusations
.
There you have it, another 15 underrated artists. Hope these lists are proving useful and I'm always keen to hear if people have found something they like out of these lists, so let me know in the comments!

2020.06.02 17:47 mavoti "Full, Uncensored Interview with DC Code Crackers Utopia" (tssznews.com, 2000-07-07)

This was posted on http://www.tssznews.com/2000/07/07/full-uncensored-interview-with-dc-code-crackers-utopia/, but the site was closed this year. The Wayback Machine archived the page, but it could be deleted from there if the site publisher (or a possible new domain owner) decides to.
I added the formatting: italic text is from "Tristan Oliver" (publisher of the page on tssznews.com, who copy-pasted the interview), questions are asked by "ttol" (formatted as headings), answers given by "Utopian", the last sentence is from the "Sonic Scene".

Full, Uncensored Interview with DC Code Crackers Utopia

by Tristan Oliver July 7, 2000
Thanks to Megaman/Yunan of the DC Tech Pages, The Sonic Scene has obtained a full copy of an interview with Utopia, the group that is close to being busted for breaking the GD-ROM code, and starting to make pirated games for the Dreamcast. We believe that this might have come seom a site called DC ISOS, but at this time, the site can not be accessed, so it can not be confirmed yet. In any case, here we go:

Can Utopia overcome the obstacle that Kalisto seemed to have trouble coming over?

Utopia overcame the obstacle of the Dreamcast GDrom protection and booting normal CD-Rs. You think this “obstacle” of bigger games even applies to us? Kalisto had their hour, they can read games and burn them, that’s all. Imitators not innovators. Straight from the horses mouth:
when you release a game, I’ll just copy your method yeah I know you are so super lame all you did with this release is speed up my work I would’ve done it myself, I just didn’t have enough time… dude, you got any idea how lame you are sounding?
Utopia is a group of nice people, in fact we are all friends, but we were blown totally away by all the lamers who stormed our channel. Also we were a little unhappy with the reaction we had. Not a single thank you for bringing the key of 6 months sleepless nights of reverse engineering. Instead a lot of people demanding this and that… but who cares about that anyway. Anyway, miracle days is not over, they have just begun.

Why hasn’t Utopia been releasing as much?

Holiday time is here, weather is fine, sun is shining, girls are wearing miniskirts, people are falling in love, and we all needed to relax after doing the “impossible” 😉

Does it take extra long to do it, rather than the Kalisto way of cracked firmware?

No, our method is just as fast, and gives us much more power than Kalisto’s way, we can actually code on this wonderful machine!

Could you essentially replace any aspect of the game?

I’m not sure if I understand your question, please elaborate a bit?

Could you change the game graphics, like change Sonic into Barney?

Ahh yes surely 😉 Well that the idea that we wanted to change Sonic into Barney, Sonic is a 3d game, all that would be needed was to figure out the data format for the game, and then insert a new 3D mesh. Now why on earth someone wanted to change Sonic into Barney is quite another story 😉

How do you solve games that require mostly all the data on the GD-Rom and there’s nothing to rip?

Well there are two options, 1. Dual-disk the game, or 2. Compress the data. Sega have taken steps to make packing/compression on the GD-Rom/Dreamcast quite hard, but certainly not impossible!

Dual-disk…can you go into detail?

Well not so much to it really, split the game over two CDRs, and a nice “please insert CD #X” popping up when the user needed to change the CD. I mean its not such a big deal really, people are speculating in 99 minute CDR and Sony double density formats, why not just split the shit over two CDs, and make all people happy? Even the ones with normal older burners (most of us all anyway).

Okay…What about games like Resident Evil Code: Veronica (2 CDs)?

Coming most soonish to a FTP site near you 😉

What’s up with Tony Hawk?

Nothing, it’s a great game. Just to big for Kalisto to do it, brains needed for this one ;P

And is dcisos.com your source for the latest dc news? 😛

Well, I check it out daily though, its a nice nice site, but since we are the news, its hard to say that ;P You know, it works like this, whenever we move our lazy asses we ARE the news 😉

Why don’t you right now? It’s a key moment to do so. Also, what’s new in the new boot loader?

Patience my dear Watson, as I said this is just the beginning, nice big stuff coming! I should also be most surprised if we didn’t also see some true groups, unlike Kalisto, kicking it on DC soon. Intro’s and trainers are a missing element being taken care of. Also there will be a major revision to our bootl oader soon.

Nice…better graphics I hope? 🙂

Better graphics of course, and some nice new features (which I will not reveal). Oh yeah, I would like the world to know that UTOPiA is a NON PROFIT organization, no cash is involved except the ones we spend on beer, cigarettes and girls.

When’s the ETA (Expected Time of Arrival) for the new boot loader? And can you give away one key feature?

ETA hmm, when we are kinda satisfied with the result. No real dead line planned. One main feature would be support for WinCE games (which it lacks now). Also maybe some nice stuff like VCD and MP3-playing support if we care to implement, but this has not been decided yet and is up to the team of skilled coders (especially wildlight) to decided if it should be done…

So VCD/MP3 support coming maybe?

Perhaps, maybe in next version, maybe in a later revision, it will come eventually for sure.

What’s the deal with these RGB checks? Will they be removed? Will patches be released to fix up the Kalisto released ones?

Surely, you will never see anything not 100% cracked from Utopia 😉 Hmm about the checks, why don’t you ask Kalisto, I think the answer will be no, maybe Utopia should help out really.

And have you been following up on the dummy file thing? Will Utopia include Zipped up dummy files? (about a few hundred kb)

Hmm, the dummy deal, we have been talking about making an automatic bin file dummy injectocalculator, eg. run it on your bin, specify 74/80 min, and burn the corrected bin file. Personally I think this will be a much more elite approach 😉

What’s the chances of that happening?

Ahh chances, its a time issue that’s all.

So that’ll definitely be implemented?

For sure, we will release such a tool, that’s if someone doesn’t think of it before us of course, anyway, I believe it’s a needed thing, and count on seeing it in a short time. Like anything else we’ve done so far (yes it was hard to keep the Dreamcast boot thing under wraps for many months) that will be a very pleasant surprise for everyone 😉 Even SEGA who are now selling consoles like never before!

So now that Kalisto is out, do you think you’ll be as proliferate as them?

Kalisto out? I don’t think so, and I even don’t hope so, I like to see some action and people using our stuff. Anyway, Utopia will resume to normal in some days when people get back from holidays, festivals and wild parties 😉

Kalisto is using your stuff?

You didn’t read that log which I pasted in the start? Anyway, at least they are using our boot loader and giving us credits, and I find that just fine! I don’t like Kalisto, but I don’t hate them either. Kalisto went berserk and made a lot of releases with games which needed no modification. Yet they have a big problem now that they face the fact that engineering skills are needed 😉

Why do you think Kalisto slowed down in the last few days?

Hehehe, I just answered your question dude.

Yeah lol, and what do you think about NBC?

Ahh, I don’t think so much, NBC IS Kalisto! 😉 NBC is Kalisto’s second group for releasing unplayables or lame titles. Just like we have Interpol and others in the PSX scene.

And uhm..so the way you’re doing it is not the way Kalisto is doing it right? (firmware etc)

ttol, right on that one you are 😉

What’s your view on other companies selling your games?

I really hate that. That is what is damaging the scene! Not us! We are strictly doing this for fun and friendship (and maybe a little big of ego boosting) but resent those lowlife money makers. Again, another reason why we don’t like Kalisto 😉 We have no dealings with silver factories in HK or in Singapore or the like, and maybe that means we can’t pay suppliers cash for their work, but then be it, we will not rock on our old scene laws of freedom of information, and that it should be for fun and not for profit.

Okay. And what would you say about Sega’s comment regarding the ‘piracy limited edition’ of 200,000 units?

Let’s just say that Utopia was prepared for this before we released a boot loader, no worries 😉

So what if Sega somehow locks out the new Dreamcasts that are in production right now…would Utopia release a special version?

I don’t think it’s bullshit, I think and know it’s very real, but a solution is already available should it be needed.

But Sega said only 100,00-200,000 USA units work…there are millions out. Do you think that’s true?

No that is bull shit. Our current solution works for all released Dreamcast to this day, all over the world. The current boot loader.

Is it likely to see something from you guys by the end of this week? (July 4th week)

Hnmmm, time will show, I would call it very likely though ;D

And what sort of role do you play for Utopia? CrackeSupplieGimp

Ahh I play the cracker role 😉

What else has utopia cracked besides Dreamcast?

Well, we like to crack dongles 😉 or any hardcore protection out there basically, anything that is uncrackable appeals to us.

You like Mission: Impossible huh?

Hehe we do yes, its for the Zen in the crack, and not for the “ware” we do this.

Do you have any last words to anyone? greetings? shout outs?

Yeah I do, here goes…
to my old man, lukullus and freefall, ttl, yasc, avh, sor, hein, maximillian, oner, psikopat, deature, desai, nagra, uxorious, steve, high society, gamefreax, eurasia, paradox, hitmen, capital, aggression, MUPS, wackyiso, oldskool, lightforce, ninja, brainwalker, icarus, and many many more who I forgot, all the persons who keep the spirit alive!
There you have it. The Sonic Scene will continue to have coverage of the potential arrest of Utopia.

2018.06.29 15:55 Kit-Carson The Four-Plate Door and the Most Dangerous Man at the University, Part 1 (Spoilers)

Preface: Theory crafting in KKC is like looking at a dozen grandchildren and seeing ten of them have blue eyes. You know the grandmother had blue eyes, too. Wait, no, it's worse than that. It's like searching for dozens of great-great-grandchildren, all scattered to the four corners. And when I finally do find one, it's got five eyes: two greens, a blue, a brown, and a chartreuse. Then the next one has only one eye, and it changes colors. How am I supposed to draw conclusions from that?
The answer is I can't with any certainty. The best I can do is take all the puzzle pieces I'm given, invent a probable narrative and see what fits. It's a fool's errand. But it's also some of the best fun I've had while waiting for book 3. Recently, I have unearthed a hidden story. It's a dark tale of secrets hiding in plain sight. Would you like to hear it?

**TL;DR summaries throughout and at the end. Note to Reddit App users, this post is optimized for a browser.**

Part 1, or where I attempt to establish that the Four-Plate Door, the Lackless Door, and the Doors of Stone are all one and the same.

The Four-Plate Door

Let's start with the one we have the most information on: The Four-Plate Door. It's in the Archives, specifically in Stacks. And Stacks, unlike Tombs, is only accessible to students admitted to the Arcanum. When Kvothe first encounters the door, moments before he's banned from the Archives, we're given a maddeningly vague yet complete description of it:

It was made of a solid piece of grey stone the same as the surrounding walls. Its frame was eight inches wide, also grey, and also one single seamless piece of stone. The door and frame fit together so tightly that a pin couldn't slide into the crack.
It had no hinges. No handle. No window or sliding panel. Its only features were four hard copper plates. They were set flush with the face of the door, which was flush with the front of the frame, which was flush with the wall surrounding it. You could run your hand from one side of the door to the next and hardly feel the lines of it at all.
In spite of these notable lacks, the expanse of grey stone was undoubtedly a door. It simply was. Each copper plate had a hole in its center, and though they were not shaped in the conventional way, they were undoubtedly keyholes. The door sat still as a mountain, quiet and indifferent as the sea on a windless day. This was not a door for opening. It was a door for staying closed.
In its center, between the untarnished copper plates, a word was chiseled deep into the stone: VALARITAS. (Ch. 43, The Flickering Way. NotW)
The four-plate door then goes unmentioned until the end of the first book.

At his mention of secrets my mind settled on one that had been bothering me for months. The secret at the heart of the Archives. "What about the stone door in the Archives?" I asked. "The four-plate door. Now that I'm a Re'lar can you tell me what's behind it?"
Elodin laughed. "Oh no. No no. You don't aim for small secrets do you?" He clapped me on the back as if I'd just made an especially good joke. "Valaritas. God. I can still remember what it was like, standing down there looking at the door, wondering."
He laughed again. "Merciful Tehlu, it almost killed me." He shook his head. "No, You don't get to go behind the four-plate door. But," he gave me a conspiratorial look. "Since you are a Re'lar . . ." He looked from side to side as if afraid to someone might overhear us. I leaned closer. "Since you are a Re'lar, I will admit that it exists." He gave me a solemn wink. (Ch. 86, The Fire Itself. NotW)
Classic Elodin. Here we're lured into believing access to the door is like learning the advanced bindings—only available to those of a higher rank. It's an understandable assumption, but likely wrong. Similarly, we also infer that Elodin and the other masters have a shared access. Also false.

"I need you to meet a friend of mine in the Archives tomorrow evening. Fifth bell, by the four-plate door. Can you do that?"
...
The next day Fela skipped her lecture on Advanced Geometrics and made her way to the Archives. She climbed down several flights of stairs and through a maze of corridors and shelves to find the only section of stone wall in the entire building that wasn't lined with books. The four-plate door stood there, silent and immobile as a mountain: Valaritas. (Ch. 90, Half-Built Houses. NotW)
Here we can confirm the four-plate door is underground.

And, of course, there was the four-plate door. The secret at the heart of the city. (Ch. 14, The Hidden City. WMF)
This is the introduction to the four-plate door fourteen chapters into Wise Man's Fear. It's one of those "needs no introduction" introductions that's heavily downplayed. But as a concluding sentence and paragraph all by itself, the significance of the door is as evident as ever.

Hours later Fela emerged from the shelves in the Archives and caught me with one hand against the four-plate door. I wasn't pushing on it, exactly. Just pressing. Just checking to see if it was firmly closed. It was.
"I don't suppose they tell scrivs what's behind this?" I asked her without any hope.
"If they do, they haven't told me yet," Fela said, stepping close and reaching out to run her fingers along the grooves the letters made in the stone: Valaritas. "I had a dream about the door once," she said. "Valaritas was the name of an old dead king. His tomb was behind the door."
"Wow," I said. "That's better than the dreams I have about it."
"What are yours?" She asked.
"Once I dreamed I saw light through the keyholes," I said. "But mostly I'm just standing here, staring at it, trying to get in." I frowned at the door. "As if standing outside while I'm awake isn't frustrating enough, I do it while I'm asleep too." (Ch. 25, Wrongful Apprehension. WMF)

I was struck by a sudden idea. "Puppet," I asked. "Do you know what is behind the locked door on the floor above this one? The large stone door?"
The Tehlin stopped dancing and Puppet looked up. He gave me a long, stern look. His eyes were serious and clear. "I don't think the four-plate door should be any concern to a student. Do you?"
I felt myself flush. "No sir." I looked away from his eyes. (Ch. 40, Puppet. WMF)
So not only is the four-plate door underground, but Puppet's room is one floor further down. It's a forgettable detail by itself except that earlier in the chapter Wilem says Puppet is on Sub-Three. This would place the four-plate door on Sub-Two. Remember this seemingly irrelevant snippet of information for later.

And although wholly unprovable, I think it's possible the following description from the chapter where Auri is leading Kvothe through the Underthing so Kvothe can discover a secret way into the Archives leads to the backside of the door:
"One passage had thick iron bars driven deep into the surrounding stone, blocking the way."

A few paragraphs earlier, Kvothe drops this comment...
"Every night I went exploring underground with Auri. I saw many interesting things, some of which may bear mentioning later..." (both from Ch. 90, Half-Built Houses. NotW)

The Lackless Door

As for the Lackless Door, there are only three mentions of it, and notably none of them are anywhere near the University. The name itself is a moniker, used only once in the books, and refers to a mysterious door that appears in the lore of the Lackless family legends.

Seven things has Lady Lackless
Keeps them underneath her black dress
One a ring that's not for wearing
One a sharp word, not for swearing
Right beside her husband's candle
There's a door without a handle
In a box, no lid or locks
Lackless keeps her husband's rocks
There's a secret she's been keeping
She's been dreaming and not sleeping
On a road, that's not for traveling
Lackless likes her riddle raveling. (Ch. 11, The Binding of Iron. NotW)

Seven things stand before
The entrance to the Lackless door.
One of them a ring unworn
One a word that is forsworn
One a time that must be right
One a candle without light
One a son who brings the blood
One a door that holds the flood
One a thing tight-held in keeping
Then comes that which comes with sleeping. (Ch. 108, Quick. WMF)

"I've heard that on the oldest parts of the Lackless lands, in the oldest part of their ancestral estate, there is a secret door. A door without a handle or hinges..." He watched me to make sure I was paying attention. "There's no way of opening it. It is locked, but at the same time, lockless. No one knows what's on the other side." (Caudicus, Ch. 59, Purpose. WMF)
This conversation is interesting because moments before Caudicus was speaking about a Lackless family heirloom, not a door per se, but was then interrupted. Kvothe eventually asks, "What was the heirloom?" which then prompted the passage above. Here he's clearly talking about a door, but the way Pat conflates "heirloom" and "door" begs the question: Is Caudicus speaking of two separate things or the same thing? By the end of Wise Man's Fear, we get to see the Lackless or Loeclos Box, a box without a handle or hinge, so naturally one might assume there was only ever the box to begin with.

This idea is further corroborated in the post Lackless poem origins where aerojockey argues that the phrase "Lackless Door" is a misinterpretation of "Drossen Tor." Similarly, qoou contends that the Spanish translation of the "Blac of Drossen Tor," which is "Nagra de Vessten Tor," is a close translation of "black dress" but that the black dress could also mean Haliax's shadow hame. There's evidence that "Tor" translates to "gate" or "door" (more on this theory and the Spanish translation below) but I agree that "Lackless Door," and by extension "black dress," is a relatively recent name that arose from a mistranslation. That said, I do believe there was an actual door linked to the Lackless ancestors of antiquity, and its historical significance has been almost completely lost over the centuries.

The Doors of Stone

Throughout the books there are numerous references to the ancient, Stonehenge-like Greystones that punctuate the Temerent landscape. Kvothe's teacher, Abenthy, knew them as Waystones (Ch. 14, The Name of the Wind. NotW). Simmon believed they were Pegan relics, but Kvothe thought they marked "old roads" to "safe places" (Ch. 36, All This Knowing. WMF). Further textual evidence suggests they are gateways to the Fae (Ch. 106, Returning. WMF). Kvothe even has an ominous dream or hallucination about them in the days after his troupe is killed (Ch. 18, Roads to Safe Places. NotW) which seems to foreshadow something. However, given all of this, I do not believe the Waystones are in any way related to the doors of stone. They certainly fit the description—stone structures that are sometimes doorways—but I'm sure it's another distraction by Pat to keep our attention adrift.

As for the phrase itself, "the doors of stone" gets a whisper of a mention only three times—once by Bast in an idiomatic way, and twice in reference to trapping an adversary.

"I swear it by my tongue and teeth," Bast said crisply. "I swear it on the doors of stone. I am telling you three thousand times. There is nothing in my world or yours more dangerous than the Cthaeh." (Ch. 105, Interlude—A Certain Sweetness. WMF)

After the battle was finished, and the enemy was set beyond the doors of stone (Skarpi, Ch. 26, Lanre Turned. NotW)

She shook her head. "no calling of names here. I will not speak of that one, though he is shut beyond the doors of stone." (Felurian, Ch. 102, The Ever-Moving Moon. WMF)

The trick here is determining if Skarpi and Felurian are speaking about the same event. Skarpi describes an opponent as "the enemy" but it lacks context so we treat it as an isolated occurrence. Furthermore, Skarpi could be speaking of an enemy in a plural sense or a singular one. The confusion is intentional, I'm sure of it, but I believe it's the latter.

Felurian similarly doesn't give a name but elaborates by saying this "first and greatest of the shapers" and he of the "dark and changing eye" also stole the moon (Ch. 102, The Ever-Moving Moon. WMF). A few chapters later, Bast confirms it was Iax who stole the moon (Ch. 105, Interlude—A Certain Sweetness. WMF). Worth noting is that by this late chapter in Wise Man's Fear, Iax's actual name, and not Jax, has been mentioned only twice. The other time was by Skarpi early on in Name of the Wind, "Selitos knew that in all the world there were only three people who could match his skill in names: Aleph, Iax, and Lyra." (Ch. 26, Lanre Turned. NotW)

Felurian concludes by saying that although "he is shut beyond the doors of stone" she will not allow his name to be called. Deducing what we know of name lore (see Ch. 129, Interlude—Din of Whispering. WMF), one could say Iax's name all day long without repercussions, even his calling name. The unstated implication is this: Not only is Iax not dead, but whether he's aware his name is being called or not, he's trapped and cannot act upon it. Felurian superstitiously refusing to tempt fate says more about her character than about the safeguards of the doors of stone. She's being extra careful.

Now, to tie all of this back to Skarpi's statement, we need to examine the Blac of Drossen Tor.

The Blac of Drossen Tor

Almost everything we know about the Blac of Drossen Tor is from Skarpi's story, save for one brief mention from Magwyn's history of Caesura (Ch. 125, Caesura. WMF). What I find deceptively interesting about Skarpi's version after many careful readings is how much Pat leaves out. It's all conjecture because I don't have the complete picture, but there's evidence of absence if you look close enough. I see Pat employing a subtle but cagey wordplay in order to trick us into not thinking too hard about what he's not revealing. Let's look at a few examples.

[Lanre and Lyra] defended Belen from a surprise attack, saving the city from a foe that should've overwhelmed them. (Ch. 26, Lanre Turned. NotW)

Hardly conclusive, but I'll surmise that for Lanre and Lyra to defend a city, any city, from a surprise attack, chances are they live in that city. And since Lanre is a lord ("They often kept each other's counsel, for [Selitos and Lanre] were lords among their people." Ch. 26, Lanre Turned. NotW), then he and Lyra would presumably be the lords of Belen. And given what we know from the letters Kvothe receives, the modern-day University resides in the Belenay-Barren region of the Commonwealth. In other words, the University is likely on or near the ancient site of Belen.

Kvothe—Anker's Inn.
University. (Two miles west of Imre.)
Belenary-Barren
Central Commonwealth. (Ch. 43, Without Word or Warning. WMF)

As for the site of Drossen Tor, there's no obvious geographical reference point for it, but it's possible it would be near the stronghold of the Empire's greatest fighter, Lanre. For Myr Tariniel would be too heavily fortified given its location in the mountains and the power of Selitos' sight. Before Iax and his shapers could have a hope of conquering the Shining City, they would have to first take out Lanre.

It's a flimsy argument by itself, but consider this discovery thanks to Sooap: The West Gate Theory. To summarize, the Spanish version of The Name of the Wind labels Drossen Tor as Vessten Tor, which as qoou points out above could mean either Lady Lackless' black dress or Haliax's shadow hame, but in the spirit of Pat using foreign-language names within a native language, Vesten = West in Norwegian and Tor = Gate or Portal or Door in German. Whether the word "Tor" is referencing the doors of stone or not—maybe the battle was named ex post facto?—the phrase certainly evokes the idea that Drossen Tor is at the west end of something. The Great Stone Road perhaps?

...and at Drossen Tor there was the largest and most terrible battle of this large and terrible war. They fought unceasing for three days in the light of the sun, and for three nights unceasing by the light of the moon. Neither side could defeat the other, and both were unwilling to retreat.
Of the battle itself, I have only one thing to say. More people died at Drossen Tor than there are living in the world today.
Lanre was always where the fight was thickest, where he was needed most. His sword never left his hand, or rested in its sheath. At the very end of things, covered in blood amid a field of corpses, Lanre stood alone against a terrible foe. It was a great beast with scales of black iron, whose breath was a darkness that smothered men. Lanre fought the beast and killed it. Lanre brought victory to his side, but he bought it with his life.
After the battle was finished, and the enemy was set beyond the doors of stone, survivors found Lanre's body, cold and lifeless near the beast he had slain. (Ch. 26, Lanre Turned. NotW)

Given the significance of Drossen Tor and how the Enemy's defeat turned the tide for the Empire, I'm going to speculate that the "first and greatest of the shapers," Iax himself, was present at the "largest and most terrible battle." But then there's confusion from the description that "Lanre stood alone against a terrible foe" and that foe was "a great beast with scales of black iron whose breath was a darkness that smothered men." It's tempting to wonder if the beast is Iax, but later it's confirmed the beast was killed so we need to make a few guesses to fill in the gaps of what's going on because Pat is being sneaky here by showing us that Lanre is not fighting Iax directly.

  • Possibility #1: Iax is no fighter; he’s a powerful conjurer. This beast was shaped by his own hand.
  • Possibility #2: Iax skin-danced into the beast and fought Lanre that way, escaping back into his body once the beast was killed.
  • Possibility #3: A variation of #1 where Iax keeps setting a greater and greater opponent against Lanre, one that Iax shaped and/or controlled. The black beast was his latest and deadliest attempt.

It's a man-behind-the-curtain scenario. Lanre fights the beast because he can't get to the source. But eventually Lanre prevails and Iax is subdued. His avatar is defeated and his strength neutralized.

The Creation of the Doors of Stone

This is the moment, their one chance. Those opposing Iax and his shapers have been preparing for this eventuality ever since they discovered Iax had altered himself with a dark magic that put him beyond death's reach. For he could never be killed; only permanently incapacitated. The only way to stop Iax would be to entomb him so completely that his power is nullified, and therefore escape would be impossible. Iax is the figurative head of the snake. Cutting off the head should scatter the remaining shapers.

Speculating on the origin of the doors of stone is almost entirely guesswork, but let's try to set the scene. Was it constructed right then and there? Was it pre-built for this eventuality and then conjured up? Did Lanre and Lyra act alone or were Selitos and Aleph present too? I like to imagine Lyra, Selitos and Aleph, all working together right there on the battlefield, using their combined naming power to conjure or assemble the towering monolith right in front of everyone's disbelieving eyes. Meanwhile, another group of men hastily dug a giant, grave-like pit. Their initial plan was to trap Iax and then bury him forever. They all would have to act quickly though because Iax would not be out of commission for long. Lanre, who had strength of a dozen men but no gift for names, might have tasked himself with restraining the unconscious Iax until his eternal vault was completed. But Iax stirred too soon.

At this point you're probably thinking, wait, didn't the beast kill Lanre? Read that passage again. It's possible it was the beast—Pat even places Lanre's body next to the beast's corpse to cement the comparison in our minds—but I think it more likely, and more fitting, that Lanre "died" forcing Iax beyond the doors of stone. I also believe we've already seen a metaphorical mention of this moment without even realizing it.

The Burning Wheel

When men saw Tehlu carrying the demon's senseless form, they thought Encanis dead. But Tehlu knew that such a thing was not easily done. No simple blade or blow could kill him. No cell of bars could keep him safe within.
...
While ten men worked the bellows, Tehlu forged the great iron wheel.
All night he worked, and when the first light of the tenth morning touched him, Tehlu struck the wheel one final time and it was finished. Wrought all of black iron, the wheel stood taller than a man. It had six spokes, each thicker than a hammer's haft, and its rim was a hand span across. It weighed as much as forty men and was cold to the touch. The sound of its name was terrible and none could speak it. (Is this "Valaritas?")
Tehlu gathered the people who were watching and chose a priest among them. Then he set them to dig a great pit in the center of the town, fifteen feet wide and twenty feet deep. (Would 20ft down correspond to Sub-Two?)
With the sun rising Tehlu laid the body of the demon on the wheel. At the first touch of iron, Encanis began to stir in his sleep. But Tehlu chained him tightly to the wheel, hammering the links together, sealing them tighter than any lock.
Then Tehlu stepped back, and all saw Encanis shift again, as if disturbed by an unpleasant dream. Then he shook and came awake entirely. Encanis strained against the chains, his body arching upward as he pulled against them. Where the iron touched his skin it felt like knives and needles and nails, like the searing pain of frost, like the sting of a hundred biting flies. Encanis thrashed on the wheel and began to howl as the iron burned and bit and froze him.
To Tehlu the sound was like a sweet music.
...
"My path then!" Encanis shrieked. "I do not regret! If I had my choice again, I would only change how fast I ran. Your people are like cattle my kind feed on! Bite and break you, if you gave me half an hour, I would do such things that these wretched gawping peasants would go mad with fear. I would drink their children's blood and bathe in women's tears!" He might have said more, but his breath was short as he strained against the chains that held him.
"So," Tehlu said, and stepped close to the wheel. For a moment it seemed like he would embrace Encanis, but he was merely reaching for the iron spokes of the wheel. Then, straining, Tehlu lifted the wheel above his head. He carried it, arms upstretched, toward the pit, and threw Encanis in.
...
And though he was powerful, he was bound and burning. He felt the metal of the wheel grow hot beneath him, blackening the flesh of his arms and legs. Encanis screamed, and even as his skin began to smoke and char, his face was still hidden in a shadow that rose from him like a tongue of darkening flame.
Then Encanis grew silent, and the only sound was the hiss of sweat and blood as they fell from the demon's straining limbs. For a long moment, everything was still. Encanis strained against the chains that held him to the wheel, and it seemed that he would strain until his muscles tore themselves from bone and sinew both.
Then there was a sharp sound like a bell breaking and the demon's arm jerked free of the wheel. Links of chains, now glowing red from the heat of the fire, flew upward to land smoking at the feet of those who stood above. The only sound was the sudden, wild laughter of Encanis, like breaking glass.
In a moment the demon's second hand was free, but before he could do more, Tehlu flung himself into the pit and landed with such force that the iron rang with it. Tehlu grabbed the hands of the demon and pressed them back against the wheel.
Encanis screamed in fury and in disbelief, for though he was forced back onto the burning wheel, and though he felt the strength of Tehlu was greater than the chains he had broken, he saw Tehlu was burning in the flames.
"Fool!" he wailed. "You will die here with me. Let me go and live. Let me go and I will trouble you no further." And the wheel did not ring out, for Encanis was truly frightened.
"No," said Tehlu. "Your punishment is death. You will serve it."
"Fool! Madling!" Encanis thrashed to no avail. "You are burning in the flames with me, you will die as I do!"
"To ash all things return, so too this flesh will burn. But I am Tehlu. Son of myself. Father of myself. I was before, and I will be after. If I am a sacrifice, then it is to myself alone. And if I am needed, and called in the proper ways then I will come again to judge and punish."
So Tehlu held him to the burning wheel, and none of the demon's threats or screaming moved him the least part of an inch. So it was that Encanis passed from the world, and with him went Tehlu who was Menda. (Ch. 23, The Burning Wheel. NotW)

Trappis' telling of The Burning Wheel is the story of the brief mortal life of Tehlu and his triumph over Encanis. It's also a call to the Tehlin faithful to choose sides, "Stay on your own path, or cross to mine." The story is certainly apocryphal, but in reading it you see references to events we believe to be historically true, e.g. "Tehlu did not speak to the six who did not cross" and "For six days Encanis fled, and six great cities he destroyed. But on the seventh day, Tehlu drew near before Encanis could bring his power to bear and the seventh city was saved."

I suspect a moment as iconic as the Beowulf-like Lanre hurling the doors of stone into the giant pit and then having to jump in after it and forcibly restrain Iax one final time would be one of those "my path or your path" stories where "People were already embroidering the details and confusing parts, but the heart of the story was still there" (Ch. 66, Volatile. NotW) but on the scale of centuries. Or enough time for an entire religion to form around it. We readers don't catch it, obviously, because we have nothing to compare it to. Also, we were deceived moments before in the story when Encanis is described as having a face "all in shadow" —i.e. a chronologically misplaced reference to Haliax. My point is, the story of the Burning Wheel—the moment Tehlu pins Encanis upon the wheel itself—should have a historical basis, and I believe that basis is the final face-off of Lanre vs Iax.

The Aftermath

The enemy is set beyond the doors of stone, and a victorious-but-wounded Lanre staggers away only to collapse next to the beast. He dies but then Lyra brings him back to life. But was it Lyra or did Iax manage one final parting blow against Lanre? Are we witnessing the birth of Haliax for whom "no door can bar my passing ... Death itself is an open doorway to my power." (Ch. 26, Lanre Turned. NotW)? Given the lengths which Lyra grieved and pleaded for him to wake up, Lanre could have laid there unconscious for hours or even days. However much time passed, it was enough for all present to witness that Lanre was truly dead. And throughout it all, Lyra mourned.

Right beside her husband's candle, there's a door without a handle.
or
Right beside her husband's vigil, there's a door that's never meant to be opened. Ever.

In the fallout of the Blac of Drossen Tor, amidst a field of corpses and ruin, Lyra, Selitos, Aleph and conceivably a recently-risen Lanre would have realized they had a new problem on their hands. Specifically, how and where do you hide an immobilized, immortal Iax for all time? The doors of stone currently rested like a coffin at the bottom of a deep pit. It wouldn't do to simply bury it. The possibility of Iax being accidentally discovered in the future would be too great a risk. A better, but more complicated alternative would be to both hide him away and keep an eye on him. And if his cell has a key (see both Ch. 43, The Flickering Way. NotW and Ch. 25, Wrongful Apprehension. WMF), best to hide that away too. To be continued in Part 2, but you see where I'm going with this.

The Loeclos Box - Sidebar 1

The first Kingkiller theory I ever read was this one: Cthaeh = Selitos. It's a popular theory, but not widely accepted. In sum, The Loeclos Box contains the very same shard of rock Selitos used to cut out his own eye after Lanre's betrayal and Myr Tariniel's fall (Ch. 26, Lanre Turned. NotW). Given the associative "lemon" scent of both the box and the area surrounding the Cthaeh's tree in the Fae, and knowing the Cthaeh cannot leave the tree, and given the how Selitos "gained a better sight" once he gouged out his eye compares to the Cthaeh's powers of being able to see the future, it all seems to suggest that while the Loeclos Box remains locked, the Cthaeh is trapped and therefore his influence is restricted. It’s a truly brilliant piece of speculative analysis.

However, in writing this theory an entirely different and much more economical explanation for the Loeclos Box presented itself: It contains the key to the four-plate door. One of the Lackless rhymes speaks of the Lady Lackless keeping her "husband’s rocks" in "a box" with "no lid or locks" and this line immediately follows the one about the door. Looking at the other rhyme, could the key be "one a thing tight-held in keeping?" The other lines indicate the door requires more than a key to breach it, which isn’t unexpected given the importance of what it protects and the expectation that it never be opened. What’s more, nIBLIB has pointed out that the description of the four-plate door's keyholes is similar to the description of the keyhole on the chest Meluan Lackless keeps the Loeclos Box in.

Each copper plate had a hole in its center, and though they were not shaped in the conventional way, they were undoubtedly keyholes. (Ch. 43, The Flickering Way. NotW)

The open lid revealed another chest, smaller and flatter. It was the size of a bread box, and its flat brass lockplate held a keyhole that was not keyhole shaped, but a simple circle instead. (Ch. 139, Lockless. WMF)

The comparison is slight, but it's interesting that a lock that’s definitely associated with the Lackless family is descriptively similar to another one I also believe to be associated with the same family from thousands of years ago. Also note that the Loeclos Box itself doesn't require a key, because if it did, you’d have a regressive problem of needing to hide even more keys.

My guess is the key can’t be destroyed or it would’ve been grounded into dust shortly after its creation. Either it’s indestructible (see Master Kilvin's ingots example from Ch 146, Failures. WMF) or the magic of the door would cease to work if the key is ever destroyed. And if the intention is to never, ever open the door, then like the door itself, the key would need to be hidden away and guarded indefinitely, preferably as far away from the door as possible. More on the Loeclos Box later.

Back to our story. Let's review.

The Four-Plate Door The Lackless Door The Doors of Stone
"It had no hinges. No handle." "There's a door without a handle." and "...a door without a handle or hinges."
The University and Imre are located in the Belenay-Barren, a region of the Commonwealth. "...on the oldest parts of the Lackless lands, in the oldest part of their ancestral estate..." Lanre and Lyra are believed to be ancestors of the Lackless family, and were the lords of Belen.
The University and Imre are located at the western end of the Great Stone Road, a road "older than god." One translation of Drossen Tor is "West Gate."
Is "Lackless Door" a mistranslation of... ..."Drossen Tor?"
Is the Lady Lackless' black dress, a dress typically associated with mourning, derived from... ..."The Blac of Drossen Tor," or its Spanish equivalent, "Nagra de Vessten Tor?"
"Right beside her husband's candle, there's a door without a handle." Lanre, the husband, "died" next to the Doors of Stone.
The four-plate door is located two floors underground in the Archives, or on Sub-Two. While Encanis was strapped to the great Wheel, Tehlu threw him into a pit that was 20 feet deep.
"In its center, between the untarnished copper plates, a word was chiseled deep into the stone: VALARITAS." "The Wheel weighed as much as forty men and was cold to the touch. The sound of its name was terrible and none could speak it."
"In spite of these notable lacks, the expanse of grey stone was undoubtedly a door. It simply was." A literal door of stone?
"This was not a door for opening. It was a door for staying closed." "No calling of names here. I will not speak of that one though he is shut beyond the doors of stone."

2018.06.16 20:24 Kit-Carson The Four-Plate Door and the Most Dangerous Man at the University (Part 1)

To KKCwhiteboard: This is the latest draft of a three-part theory that I’ve been tinkering with for the past few months. You would be doing me a great favor by having the first look and share any feedback before I post it over on KingkillerChronicle. And a moon-sized thanks to loratcha for creating this alternative KKC sandbox where we’re encouraged to play with any half-formed idea that blossoms in our imaginations as a result of this beautiful series. It was here where I found the final links I needed to connect these seemingly disparate theories into one.

By the end of Wise Man's Fear, we get to see the Lackless Box, a box without a handle or hinge, so naturally one might assume there was only ever the box to begin with.

WMF).

WMF), one could say Iax's name all day long without repercussions.

It's certainly apocryphal, but in reading it you see references to events we believe to be historically true, e.g. "Tehlu did not speak to the six who did not cross" and "For six days Encanis fled, and six great cities he destroyed. But on the seventh day, Tehlu drew near before Encanis could bring his power to bear and the seventh city was saved."

I suspect a moment as iconic as the Beowulf-like Lanre hurling the doors of stone into the giant pit and then having to jump in after it and forcibly restrain Iax one final time would be one of those stories where "People were already embroidering the details and confusing parts, but the heart of the story was still there" (Ch.

Continued in Part 2.

2018.04.01 01:07 asseater420666 How to get level 9 in english lit poetry - AQA

!!LONG POST WARNING!! Hi guys, long time lurker but decided to made an account. It seems some people on here need help especially with English Lit, which is probably my best subject so I thought i could give advice on how to get best grades you can. I got full marks on my poetry and AIC mocks, if anyone wants a copy of either i’ll post them in the comments. For comparing poetry, you should plan. It shows the examiner you’re intelligent and thoughtful, plus your ideas will be more organised and your answer will be structured better. You can write down key ideas, themes, techniques, etc. A good thing to put in your plan is a little bit about context as well, whether it be about the time period or the poet. Don’t plan for more than 2 minutes or so, it’s an exam and you’ll still be at a push for time so don’t waste it on a really neat or big plan, just make it quick. Firstly, make an opening. It sounds obvious but an opening is really important for making a strong argument, a great way to start would be to list three things that relate to both the poem and the question (if that makes sense). For example, if the question relates to satisfaction in a relationship and you were comparing The Farmer’s Bride and Singh Song, you could say: “The theme of satisfaction is present in both Singh Song” by Daljit Nagra and “The Farmer’s Bride” by Charlotte Mew. Nagra uses a range of lingual and structural techniques to present the shopkeeper’s relationship with his wife as not only strongly satisfied, but emotionally close, intimate and lustful, meanwhile Mew’s interpretation of satisfaction in her poem shows an emotionally and physically distant, unhappy and unsatisfied couple”. See how each poem is summed up with three points? It makes for a strong opening, and you can make three different paragraphs mentioning and analysing each of these points one by one. Next, when moving on to the actual comparison, use “springboard” openings. These are opening sentences which act as a springboard for you to analyse different techniques and quotes. I’m not good at explaining, so I’m sorry this sounds awkward! An example of a springboard would be the narrative voice: you can then pick quotes from each poem that show an example of the narrative voice, compare their effects on the reader and analyse their meaning. You could do structure, tone, language, etc. So for example: “Both poems use language techniques to present the key theme of ____.” You would then go on to analyse the first poem, and compare it to the second. For quotes, it’s better to pick really detailed quotes that contain multiple techniques. You MUST include layers of analysis, so instead of naming just one technique and saying what the effect is, you can say more than one thing about in. For example, in “Walking Away” you could talk about the quote “satellite wrenched from its orbit”, firstly talking about the metaphor and how it shows that the father’s memory of his son is highly important and impactful, and then talk about the emotive verb “wrenched”, about the violent and cruel connotations, and how this reflect’s the father’s sadness towards the memory. This is just one example, but if you can find memorable quotes like that one and analyse the shit out of them you should be okay. Context is difficult because sometimes it feels forced or it doesn’t fit in with the point you make. Context does not have to be in every paragraph, as long as you mention it once you should be okay. Don’t start reciting the poet’s biography or mention pointless details, because this can completely ruin a point tbh. Add in context that’s relevant to the question. If the question was on attitudes towards parents and you used the poem “Follower” it would be really good to mention that Seamus Heaney grew up on a farm and that the poem was autobiographical, and so the feelings of closeness and admiration towards parents are amplified because it’s coming from someone who experienced it first. It’s also really easy to go on a tangent when adding context, so making it no more than two sentences long. ALWAYS link back to the question. Just a quick phrase at the end of each paragraph explaining how the point you made relates to what the question is asking can improve your grade. If the question is on distance in a relationship, don’t start going on about unhappiness or love or whatever. Keep it on the same point. Also mention the effect on the reader and the influence on them, i don’t think you can get into the top bands without talking about them. One sentence should so, just explain briefly what influence it has on them, on the atmosphere, but avoid generic phrases like “it makes them want to read on”. Like yeah of course it does. It has to be specific to the poem and what the poet is trying to convey. Try and sound like an intellect. It sounds really stupid, but using phrases like “paradoxically”, “it is interesting to note”, “indeed” make you sound like you have your shit together. This is what my teacher told the class to do, because you’re up against a lot of kids that study 12 hours a day and go to grammapublic schools with the best teachers (meanwhile I go to a shitty school with only some good teachers). Like I said you do sound a bit daft but to an examiner you’ll sound like you put a lot of effort in and it gives the impression you really know what you’re talking about. Don’t forget to write a conclusion. Just a brief paragraph on how the poems are different, how they’re different and link back to question. You don’t need to add quotes or anything, just write a few points. If you struggle thinking of things to compare, use the acronym STOMPER: Structure, Titles, Openings, Methods, Perspective, Endings, Reader. Hope this helped. I’m super bad at explaining things, ironically, so if you have questions free to ask. I’ll put my mock example in the comments if people want it, i’m doing love and relationships but you’ll still be able to see how it can be structured, how to analyse, etc. ☺️

2020-2021

Off-season*

-The Warriors, after assembling the league's three best players and spending two seasons failing to capture the title...
-...Trade LeBron James (who, in fairness, demanded the trade, claiming playing in the west was a "failed experiment") to the Bucks for Malcom Brogdon and Khris Middleton. Their new starting five (Curry - Middileton - Durant - Tillie - Richards), is being touted as an even better three point team than the 73-9 team. Time will tell.
-On the bucks end of things, their new five (Westbrook - Paul - James - Giannis - Parker) is considered deadly.
-Andrew Wiggins signs with SA
-Kyle Lowry signs with SAC
-Suns sign D. Howard to 3 y79 Mil deal
-Suns sign PG Milos Teodosic to 3y25 Mil deal
-Magic sign Frank Kaminsky to 3 y72 mil deal
Top 5 Rookies to watch out for: 1.) Ivan Rivera (PF - TOR)
2.) Miles Norris (SF - MIN)
3.) Cade Breen (SG - CHA)
4.) Chris Mitchell (SF - DEN)*
5.) Javier Nagra (SG - NO)
*Is currently serving a 2 month suspension before eligible to play.

Season:

-The bucks new team proved as deadly as they seemed, all scoring 15+ with Giannis, James, Paul, and Westbrook all finishing with 20+ PER in only their first game.

2017.01.07 18:37 BotSpeaks Will digital wallets survive the UPI onslaught?

A shorter version (reduced by 91.0%) can be found on IndiaSpeaks.
This is an extended summary, original article can be found here

Extended Summary:

Will digital wallets survive the UPI onslaught?.
In the last two months that demonetisation has dominated dinner-table conversations, digital wallet Paytm has had a dream run, clocking unprecedented numbers.
Though its been a lop-sided affair with the Vijay Shekhar Sharma-led company pocketing most of the spoils, even competitors FreeCharge and MobiKwik have seen business rise manifold since November 8.
Interestingly, the BHIM (Bharat Interface for Money) app, which is UPI-based, had crossed 3 million downloads within a week of its launch and facilitated half a million transactions.
Last but not least, the money remains in ones bank accounts, so theres a sense of security.
Second, for wallet transactions, one needs to key in the mobile numbeinformation of the receiver or scan the QR code.
For example, if a UPI user goes out shopping and needs some money instantaneously, they just need to send a request to a friend, who will get a pop-up on his mobile.
It gives a lot more flexibility, and the belief that my money is secure.
UPI, however, gets out of it because once you install UPI on your phone, all you need to remember is your M-Pin, said Sanjay Khan Nagra, senior associate at Khaitan & Co, a law firm.
Wallets did a phenomenal job in building the experience layer to do payment transaction for cabs and small-value transactions.
As such, Gupta feels UPI wont impact wallets in the short term since not many consumers understand the meaning of VPA, UPI or know how to create a handle: But in the long run, there will be some cannibalisation for sure.
In the case of wallet, however, the risk exposure is limited to the money loaded.
Mobile wallets do not expose the bank account, which gives peace of mind in terms of security as bank accounts hold much larger sums.
Nagra of Khaitan & Co believes that once UPI is adopted rapidly and a lot of people start using it, wallets in their present form will become redundant.
Once the economy remonetises, people would again move to cash and prefer cash over wallets.
The reason for this is the ease of usage offered by wallets.
Collectively, we shall work towards achieving a cashless economy in India.
Singh wants the government to enable all wallets to be a part of UPI.
Gupta feels that adoption of UPI as a platform for transactions is still a good 12 months away.
But Nagra thinks UPI will take wallets to the cleaners.
I dont see a bright future for wallets in the face of UPI.
