2024.06.09 07:37 Gazzor1975 Commander Playtest, Level 12, Kingmaker spoilers

Also posted on Paizo forums. Posting on here to possibly be informative and worthy of discussion.
More verbose than intended. Trying to give detailed feedback.
****************************************
TLDR: Solid B tier class, possibly A tier for parties that build around him. With a few tweaks it will be a solid class to release.
To the devs, just want to say that this is the best system that I’ve played in nearly 40 years of gaming. I particularly like the commitment to continual balance improvements, such as buffing barbarian in the new core 2, and the annual play tests that have helped keep new classes roughly in line with the power of prior classes.
So, here’s my little bit to help: commentary on a 3 session level 12 Kingmaker dungeon delve using the commander as a gmpc. (I’ve also filled out the playtest surveys as well).
Was originally going to be Octavia, wizard 12, accompanying the party, but changed it to an old warrior they’d rescued from a dictator’s dungeon.
He beseeched the party to let him join them and help to rescue his daughter from a fierce barbarian tribe. (And as I told them it was the commander playtest they said ‘yes’).
I assumed that he’d know all tactics, being a grizzled old veteran.
Feats were: Plant Banner, Adaptive Stratagem, Wave the Flag, Efficient Preparation, Defiant Banner, Rallying Banner, Fortunate Blow.
Armed with composite longbow as I felt he was too squishy and action starved to melee.
Party composition: Meat head fighter paladin rogue, dorn dergar, aims to pump out massive damage and debuff via crit knock down and greater crushing rune. Tactical fighter. Reach sword, open handed, knock down blow, medic and Overwatch dedications. Gunslinger - sniper, dpr, thief stuff and fake out in combat buffing. Phoenix Sorcerer kineticist – primal caster. Timber sentinel when not using slots. Bard kineticist – fortissimo spam plus timber sentinel when not using slots.
Main party of 5 has very solid dpr, being able to pump out disgusting amounts of damage and finishing fights quickly.
During the campaign, 11 other companions have rotated in and out of party slot 6, and now it was the commander’s turn.
Fight 1: Rescue 5 hostages from barbarian tribe. 24 level 8 creatures. 160Xp fight. Commander gave gunslinger extra stride to fly down a cliff he’d suggested the party attack from, tell the 5 hostages they were being rescued and have them enter a bag of holding. Gunslinger then flew back up with the hostages. Sorcerer placed wall of stone to slow barbarians down. Barbarians then tried to climb the 50’ cliff to get to the party, and party tore them apart. Sorcerer used 4 chain lightnings that did a lot of damage. 17 died, 7 ran into a cave in the cliff side, hacking through the wall of stone blocking it off. Commander also good giving gunslinger extra attacks each round with Strike Hard! Tactic.
The party had thought that was the only fight of the day, which was why the sorcerer blew all his rank 6 slots in that fight. However, the commander’s daughter told them of a grim plot to retrieve a magic sword that would allow the barbarian chief to attain immense power. The party had to stop him!
Fight 2: Party had scouted the cave with prying eye and found 3 ninja type women inside. 80Xp fight, plus 7 survivors from last fight making it 127xp difficulty fight.
They were actually 3 level 12 clerics, and party had a hard time with a repulsion spell limiting fighter engagement. The 7 barbarians from the previous fight added some extra pressure. Commander mainly gave gunslinger extra attacks in order to finish the repulsion caster at range quickly, leaving fighters free to wade in and murder the 2 other casters with disrupting stance plus double reaction strikes.
Fight 3: Party found a secret passage and triggered a trap that summoned 3 Derghodaemons. 80Xp fight. Party was trapped by 2 blade barriers whist the daemons attacked at range. Sorcerer dispelled one barrier, letting the fighters go ham. Near the end, gunslinger and a fighter were both confused. Wave the Flag granted them 2 new saves, that they passed, negating the confusion. Nice. Commander also making heavy use of Strike Hard! And Fortunate Blow tactics combo with the gunslinger.
Fight 4: Party came across a gibbed up corpse in front of 2 massive iron statues. Even the meat head fighter figured out they’d likely animate. Commander had prepared Pirahnha Assault. This was handy as the 2 Iron Golems animated. 80Xp fight. The party made short work of them, with the commander negating 12 of the 15 resistance of each golem in turn.
Fight 5: 16 skeletal barbarians, 107xp fight. Commander had nothing to do as the party entered the bag of holding and the gunslinger snuck everybody past the skeletons.
Fight 6: A cleric 13 of Gorum and his 8 skeletal servants. 73*Xp fight. *The cleric spell dc was 7 higher than the party casters, and he was hitting the fighters on 2+ in melee. This guy was not a level 13 creature…
Due to a language issue, party missed out on two free gear upgrades and instead it kicked off. Cleric opened up with striding away and repulsion. His dc was so ludicrous, the casters couldn’t counteract it. He then pelted the party with spells whilst the 8 skeletons blasted the party with long bow fire.
Piranha Assault was very useful here due to cleric and skeletons resisting 10 most damage types. However, once party blasted with a divine wrath, with 3 party members crit failing to save, leaving them sickened 2 and slowed indefinitely, the commander used Form Up! To help the party beat a hasty retreat. Luckily the cleric declined to pursue.
(If he had, the repulsion would be negated and the fighters would have exploded him).
Fight 7: After 20 minutes of puking and healing, the party came back. The cleric no longer had repulsion, and the sorcerer used wall of stone to trap the cleric with the fighters and block the skeletons. Due to piranha Assault, the cleric damage resistance was negated. Cleric was nearly down after two rounds, despite 250+ hp and fast healing 10. Cleric was going to dimension door away when commander had his turn and used Strike Hard on the meat head fighter to crit the cleric and finish him off. The skeletons fell easily after that.
Fight 8: The party came across a possessed barbarian chief, level 15, who’d butchered his own men in a fit of rage. He also had 8 skeletal barbarians helping him out. 133Xp fight. The chief charged in and the party held him at the choke with the corridor. After two rounds the chief had taken over 300 damage, was dying 3. But he didn’t die, and didn’t fall unconscious. His cursed sword wouldn’t let him!
Noting that the chief was confused, blindly attacking himself when nobody else nearby, the commander used Form Up! To help the party retreat until the chief dropped dead of his wounds after ten rounds of super raging. The skeletons were easy to dispatch after that.
So, overall a successful expedition, managed with one day’s worth of resources. General consensus was that the commander was a solid addition to the party. However, would the wizard have been better?
THE GOOD:
Has some very powerful abilities. Piranha Assault, Form up!, Guiding Shot, Wave the Flag coming to mind. Fortunate Blow combo with Strike Hard for the gunslinger was very nice. I think Fortunate Blow might be an S tier feat. A strike combined with a limited true target spell for one action that can be used all day looks very good. Also has Mountaineering and Naval Training to aid greatly with exploration. Very nice utility.
THE BAD:
Some tactics just didn’t see use. Stupefying Raid might have been good in some of the fights, but the commander didn’t prepare it as other more bread and butter tactics available. End It! Looks very powerful, but it helps a winning party win harder. It can’t turn around a losing fight, or at least unlikely to.
Ended up spamming the same few bread and butter tactics as can only change one per fight, and that costs a level 6 feat…
Apart from climbing and swimming tactics, very little utility. Wizard could have prepped a translate and possibly avoided the cleric fight altogether. But, that’s the nature of martials. Maybe he’ll get more utility feats in the final version? To be fair, he’s already more useful than a lot of martials utility wise.
THE UGLY: Utterly bizarre power scaling on feats.
The mount doesn’t get independent until level 10. Why? It’s almost useless for the first nine levels of the commander’s career. He’s either going to pay the feat tax of going beast master or cavalier, or just not bother with it at all.
Plant Banner goes from terrible to meh to bonkers at level 15. Why not a more uniform progression?
Defiant Banner is meh until level 14, then it’s bonkers good. At level 20 a commander can spend one action to give entire party physical resist 17 in his banner aura. Why bother with champion or guardian with limited 22 damage negation at that point?
Class Dedications: As these 2 feats scale with overall class, I can see a wizard grabbing both of these and getting amazing value from one or both of them whilst still having the advantage of being a full caster. I assume that commander dedication will greatly limit number of squad mates affected by commander dedication feats and tactics?
FINAL THOUGHTS: Solid class. Nearly there. Just needs some tweaking IMO. Looking forward to it, and guardian in the new book next year.
Great job devs.

2024.06.09 00:59 Branded_Mango Lonesome Road at Low Level: the complete guide

One thing i've found that most people do is tackle The Divide last, which does make sense in a narrative standpoint. However, if you're making a build that wants certain Divide items, but hold it off until you're much higher level, then there's no need to do this since Lonesome Road is actually designed to have a steady and surprisingly forgiving progression of gear and handy items that can be used to complete it like a mini-playthrough of a different, contained game. One thing that a lot of people find disappointing about a lot of the Divide's gear is that they come in with either better or build-centered things, so they ignore the very unsubtle number of convenient gear placements meant to be used for various areas.
For reference, this still works on Very Hard + Hardcore mode. You'll probably grab a couple of levels before entering just by virtue of there being some things to do in the Mojave on the way, so you'll likely be heading in at lvl 3-4 at the earliest, which is still doable albeit the first section in particular will be a bit iffy.
First off, upon entering you'll notice the very underwhelming Arc Welder. As terrible as this weapon is in the grand scheme of NV's kickass arsenal, its sole reason for existence is to allow for you to easily use EMP damage vs the Sentry Bots in the Missile Base Bunker. The main issue however is that Sentry Bots are bastards who spam missiles, so you usually have to sneak and wait for them to turn around, then kite their backs. Or at least, the first 2.
Once you reach the door that leads to Hopeville, where 2 Sentry Bots and a ring of laser turrets will gank you, you can make use of some presents left behind by General Retslaf, which includes 2 plasma mines, a pulse grenade, and a bad condition plasma rifle behind his de-activated personal sentry bots. The code to get these is in an Average locked desk on the way, which shouldn't be any problem because leveling up Lockpick ASAP is always a good idea. Don't forget to pick up the Bowie Knives from the various dead Marked Men (you can also use their armor if you have nothing better at this point). Don't forget the unmissable upgrade for Ed-E.
Before allowing Ed-E to open the door of death, place the mines there and back up. Depending on how clumped they end up during the entry, both Sentry Bots should be either very heavily damaged, 1 dead, or both dead if you got supremely lucky. Don't fight them if they survived until they start shooting at Ed-E (due to being immortal even on Hardcore because of literal plot armor), then jump out and Arc Weld them as Ed-E acts as your tiny floating aggro tank. If they weren't damaged enough, you can use your Pulse Grenade to finish them off or save it for the laser turrets to blast most of them in one go. Nearby will be a room that should give you US Army Combat Armor as a sweet reward for your troubles, and you're going to need it to not immediately get your sphincter turned inside-out at what comes next.
After Ulysses introduces himself and gives you sweet, sweet endgame-oriented quest completion exp to level up, get that Bowie Knife ready and get ready to sell that crap Arc Welder. The Marked Men are level scaled, but even in at their weakest they have mid-lategame weapons that are beastly for and against low levels, such as Marksman Carbines, Shishkebabs, Blades of the West, Trail Carbines, tri-beam laser files,12.7mm SMGs, etc. Exploit VATS to jump the nearest one for his weapon, then go into the Hopeville Missile Base Headquarters. Pray that you either grabbed a good gun drop from your first Marked Man victim, that your Bowie Knife's cripples will stunlock long enough, or that one of your incoming enemies will be wielding a crappy Arc Welder because you need to kill 2 Marked Men here. Depending on what weapons they have, you may need several attempts or none. The important thing is that this place has a Commissary and Auto Doc, which you're going to now exploit the crap out of. Also there's another ED-E upgrade here. It's also useful to have Atomic Cocktails on hand to deal with the Tri-Beam Laser wielding Marked Men since otherwise they'll kill you in seconds.
Sell any Marked Men armor and Arc Welders since they have very high caps value despite being garbage, and use your several thousand or may over ten thousand caps (once the Commissary reaches 200ish caps, exit the interface and re-engage for a full 6k cap restock) to buy stimpacks, chems, gear repairs, and ammo for whichever weapons you've obtained (or just ask Ed-E to repair a powerful melee weapon). Since all the Marked Men weapons are really kickass, that means now it's your turn to kick their asses in revenge. Take it slow because their weapons can still whoop your ass. Also use magazines to try to get Ed-E's check for obtaining Satchel charges. You don't need them persay, but the ones it can give you can help out a ton for an incoming portion of the DLC. In a table is also the passcode for the armory, which will give you some very good and likely very needed upgrades to your current kit.
For every fight you take major damage in (so basically every single fight), go back to the Auto-Doc to conserve on healing resources. Alternatively, you can at any time just go back to the Mojave, book it to the Gun Runners, and use your quickly obtained caps wealth to buy and/or mod a powerful gun and extra ammo. However, the Marked Men gear will likely be much better, just in bad condition and their gear will give you more than enough caps to just Commissary respair them so this is mostly for ammo.
Use the armory passcode to get access to a lot more ammo, and especially a nice stockpile of rockets. If you have high Lockpick and/or magazines, you can pick a Very Hard locked locker to get a set of free Riot Gear. Fight your way to the Laser Detonator on a rooftop but don't pick it up until you're ready. And by that, i mean pick up the Red Glare (there are 2, 1 from a Marked Man and 1 laying there, use one to repair the other or sell one for a bunch more caps), and have it ready. The moment you pick up the detonator, several Marked Men will spawn in so use your rooftop positioning to rain rockets on them.
Afterwards, upon reaching the wreckage wall with the warhead that will spawn in Blister and his group, don't blow it up just yet. Like before, hop up the left wall leading to this warhead to get a high ground position, then detonate the warhead with Red Glare immediately brought back out to fight Blister...whose a joke that you'll blow up because he has a looooong way to run with his Flamer to be able to attack you. Instead, the Marked Men behind him will be the real threat as you'll need to counter-snipe with the Red Glare after clowning on Blister and taking his knockoff Lanius hat.
After that is the first Tunneler section...where you have 2 options: either spam the generous number of Flashbangs provided to haul ass past the Tunnelers...or use said Flashbangs to exploit the fear state to kill the Tunnelers while they're not fighting back. The second option is obviously way riskier, but they do provide a lot of exp and Cave Fungus to make Healing Poultices if you're leveling Survival. Either way, the convenient Flashbangs are your saving grace here.
After Ulysses' next glorified exp reward in the form of words, you'll now face Beast. Depending on what weapons you've accrued, Beast can either be a complete joke or a painful roadblock. If you've gotten a Blade of the West (and perhaps enough levels for Finesse via fighting more than the bare minimum number of Marked Men and Tunnelers), the built-in knockdown on crits can more or less cheese every single other major Marked Man boss by just knockdown stunlocking them to death. If you want to use guns, then prepare to face his Shoulder Mounted Machinegun plus another Marked Man whose his cannibalism buddy or something. Either way, kill Beast and take his Lanius knockoff helm to then get your next restock since on the Truck is another Commissary. But that's not the real prize: that's the MANY mine boxes of Satchel mines just laying around the truck.
Use the Laser Detonator on the next warhead to insta-kill the next 2 Marked Men around it (don't forget to loot them), then climb up The Crow's Nest (watch out for 2 satchels, keep an eye on the flooring), where you'll get another armor upgrade in the Advanced Riot Gear as well as a good number of meds and a Sniper Rifle. All of these are useless for the next part, which is the Deathclaw Highway of Pants-Soiling.
Or, it would be if you didn't just conveniently get a bunch of instant-exploding giga-mines. Not only that, but the first 2 Deathclaws are hanging out next to a warhead which you can detonate at any range (even on the Crow's Nest), which will severely damage them without aggroing on you if you're far enough away. Just setting 2 satchels somewhat distant from each other then shooting the near-dead Deathclaws should lure them into the satchels, each dying to 1 satchel thanks to the warhead doing most of the work. For each upcoming Deathclaw, set a trap of 3-4 satchels which should very heavily damage and/or cripple both their legs which makes them easy pickings to finish off. If you were able to unlock Ed-E's satchel creation check, you should have more than enough when combined with Beast's convenient stash of them. I would not recommend risking the trailer of jumpscare Deathclaw Ambush for its huge special ammo stash unless you have enough Satchels to just set them up on top of the trailer to kill the ambushing Deathclaw on its scripted landing. You don't have enough if you haven't passed Ed-E's check, since you'll need them for the rest of the Deathclaws on the highway.
After the highway, don't bother taking the rightmost path because it just has Tunnelers and no loot, plus more Deathclaws will spawn on the highway and follow you to just kill you, but rather hug the rightmost side of the main road. You'll notice by watching the road itself that there are A LOT of satchel mines...which will kill you or almost do so instantly because these things detonate stupidly fast so just shoot them unless you are giga-practiced in pinpoint satchel disarming timing. Up next is Bonesaw who is either pants-shittingly terrifying with his chainsaw or a joke (either lure him into satchels, knockdown stunlock him with Blade of the West, or try to shoot him down with whatever you've got), and the SMMG is nice here for taking care of his goons. You can also just sneak and ignore Bonesaw if you don't care for his Lanius knockoff hat (but it's the most accurate one...) to reach the big shiny nuke lever for more quest completion exp, and a conveniently placed Industrial Hand.
Go into the railway of Tunnelers and use either the Industrial Hand or whatever else you've got to beat them down (Blade of the West is great for stunlocking these as well). Surviving this will get you to Sunstone Tower Roof, which is probably the most cheesable section of this.
Use the Laser Detonator on the warhead below to blow up 2-3 Marked Men, then use the Red Glare for long range counter sniping the 2 Marked Men on the nearby lopsided building. And watch out for a few more satchel mines. At this point, you should now be sufficiently geared and leveled to just play the rest of the DLC as normal, so there's not much else to elaborate on other than emphasizing the importance of grabbing the rest of Ed-E's easily found upgrades. The Elite Riot Gear is also here too for your final armor upgrade.
The only pointer after this as you'll now play normally with your endgame-tier gear is that once you reach the outside of Ulysses' Temple, just sit around and wait for the 2 Deathclaws to eventually wander into the Marked Mens' sight to then fight them. If you're lucky, they might even kill Blade for you with the final Lanius knockoff hat to collect, but at the minimum they'll clear out most of the Marked Men on the low ground. After that, deal with Ulysses how you want but the ultimate lazy cheese way is to talk him down via having all of Ed-E's upgrades then just let him and his infinite healing eyebots kill the incoming Marked Men hoard while you watch and just loot them for easy endgame weapons.
If you want to maximize content and long-term rewards, leave Ed-E in his pod and nuke everyone, since you came here at such low level you likely haven't received the NCR's or Legion's pardons so you can now annihilate Benny with DLC giga-gear to then be forgiven, now with access to Long-15 and Dry Wells to fight Royez and Gaius respectively if you want. Also the Lonesome Road perk is amazing for no-companion solo play.
And that's how you complete Lonesome Road at low level. Why the hell would you do this, you ask? Mainly, to rush certain pieces of gear exclusive to here very early and surprisingly without being as hard as you might think (Bitter Drink recipe, Advanced Riot Gear for explosive builds, Ulysses' Duster for Light Touch crit spam builds, Ed-E upgrades for resources and convenience, early access to the Armor of the 87th Tribe and Scorched Sierra power armor, etc) as well as a free Intense Training SPECIAL boost early for completing it. There's really no point in collecting strong gear if there's little to nothing left to use it against, so it's nice to get Lonesome's Road's stuff waaaaay before that point, even using it in other DLCs. It's funny wearing Gaius' armor while fighting the White Legs for maximum irony.
I also did this to put some more attention to the devs' design of gear progression which seems to have been made to allow for low-mid level completion purposes. A lot of thought came into providing players lacking in strong gear the means to bypass every single part of the DLC with a pretty cool progression of gear and tools to support the leveling experience, but the general consensus seems to have ignored this due to most choosing to do Lonesome Road as the finale or close to the end of their playthroughs. A lot of LR's exclusive weapons are generally considered subpar, but that's likely due to being designed as tools to fight Marked Men specifically rather than more bulkier, armored enemies. Either way, hopefully some of you decide to do this just to experience what it's like since needing to use a lot of convenient resources rather than ignoring or hoarding them makes this method a lot more fun than you'd expect after the "oh god please die quickly before insta-killing me" phase of the first few Marked Men.

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Ang Lee's turn.
Lee's father, a respect principal, was hoping that his son would become a professor. But he was disappointed when his son failed his high school exam twice, forcing him to attend a less privileged university. Seeing Ingmar Bergman's film The Virgin Spring was a formative experience for him. After finishing his mandatory military service, he moved to the United States to complete his studies. He wanted to become an actor, but his struggle with English made him move into directing. After finally meeting a few contacts in the industry, he started working as a director.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

Pushing Hands (1991)

His directorial debut. It stars Sihung Lung, Lai Wang, Bo Z. Wang, Deb Snyder and Haan Lee. It follows a Chinese tai chi master living in New York, who struggles to find his place in the world. The film shows the contrast between traditional Chinese ideas of Confucian relationships within a family and the much more informal Western emphasis on the individual.
Lee graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 1984, but had failed to find career opportunities since, working almost full-time as a house-father. During the intermediate six years, he became interested in martial arts, specifically tai chi, after reading the wuxia novel Jianghu qixia zhuan. This motivated him to write a screenplay, which brought the attention of Hsu Li-kong, a recently promoted senior manager in a major studio who had a strong interest in Lee's unique style and freshness. He invited Lee to make his directorial debut.
It had a very limited release, and it was reported that it made just $152,322 domestically. But it received acclaim in the United States and Taiwan. And that allowed Lee to finally get a chance to expand his horizon.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $152,322.
  • Worldwide gross: $152,322.

The Wedding Banquet (2023)

"You are cordially invited to a wedding where everybody wants to kiss the bride... except the groom."
His second film. The film stars Gua Ah-leh, Lung Sihung, May Chin, Winston Chao and Mitchell Lichtenstein. The story concerns a bisexual Taiwanese immigrant man who marries a mainland Chinese woman to placate his parents and get her a green card. His plan backfires when his parents arrive in the United States to plan his wedding banquet and he has to hide the truth of his gay partner.
Neil Peng approached Lee with the idea in 1986 by revealing to Lee that one of their mutual friends had moved to the United States and was in a same-sex relationship without the knowledge of the man's parents. Lee and Peng began writing the screenplay two years later and were soon joined by James Schamus. Schamus wrote that the film was "first drafted in Chinese, then translated into English, re-written in English, translated back into Chinese, and eventually subtitled in Chinese and English and a dozen other languages."
The film was critically acclaimed, and became a sleeper hit, earning $23.6 million against a budget of just $1 million. Lee was on the rise.
  • Budget: $1,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $6,933,459.
  • Worldwide gross: $23,633,459.

Eat Drink Man Woman (1994)

"It's hard to tell where sex stops and food begins."
His third film. It stars Sihung Lung, Wang Yu-wen, Wu Chien-lien, and Yang Kuei-mei. It follows four members of the Zhu family as they navigate the challenges of love, life, tradition and family. This film deals with the transition from tradition to modernity. It is Lee's first (and to date, only film) to be shot entirely in his native Taiwan.
Like his previous films, another critical and commercial success. Lee quickly made himself a household name.
  • Budget: N/A.
  • Domestic gross: $7,294,403.
  • Worldwide gross: $24,294,403.

Sense and Sensibility (1995)

"Lose your heart and come to your senses."
His fourth film. Based on the novel by Jane Austen, and it stars Emma Thompson (who also wrote the screenplay), Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, members of a wealthy English family of landed gentry, as they must deal with circumstances of sudden destitution. They are forced to seek financial security through marriage.
In 1989, producer Lindsay Doran suggested adapting the novel to her colleagues. She was a lifelong fan of the novel, and vowed to make a film adaptation if she ever made it into the industry. Looking for a writer, Doran read screenplays by English and American writers until she came across a series of comedic skits, often in period settings, that actress Emma Thompson had written and decided that that was the direction she wanted for the film. As they were working on the film Dead Again, Doran hired Thompson to write the film, even though she never wrote a feature-length film before.
Thompson spent five years writing and revising the screenplay, both during and between shooting other films. Believing the novel's language to be "far more arcane than in [Austen's] later books," Thompson sought to simplify the dialogue while retaining the "elegance and wit of the original." Despite Doran's confidence, studios were reluctant to pick up the film, as Thompson never wrote a film. Columbia Pictures executive Amy Pascal supported Thompson's work and agreed to sign as the producer and distributor.
In 1993, Lee was hired to direct, basically for his work in The Wedding Banquet. Even though he was not familiar with Jane Austen, Doran felt that Lee's films, which depicted complex family relationships amidst a social comedy context, were a good fit with Austen's storylines. Viewing it as a "director for hire" job, Lee spent six months in preparing for the film, as it would have his largest budget ($16 million) by that point. Doran and Columbia asked Thompson to play Elinor herself.
The film received widespread critical acclaim, and was included on more than a hundred top-ten of the year lists, as well as one of the best Austen adaptations. It was a huge box office hit, earning $134 million worldwide. It received 7 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress. Thompson won Best Adapted Screenplay, making her the only person to have won an Oscar for both her writing and acting (she won Best Actress two years prior). However, Lee was not nominated for Best Director, a decision that was criticized by many as Hollywood's racism against Lee and Chinese cinema in general. Lee sought to avoid turning his omission into a scandal and specifically asked the Taiwan state media not to make it a "national issue", explaining that he endured more pressure when forced to act as his country's representative.
  • Budget: $16,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $43,182,776.
  • Worldwide gross: $134,582,776.

The Ice Storm (1997)

"The American Dream was over. But the hangover was just beginning."
His fifth film. Based on the novel by Rick Moody, it stars Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood, Katie Holmes, Glenn Fitzgerald, Jamey Sheridan and Sigourney Weaver. Set during Thanksgiving 1973, it follows two dysfunctional New Canaan, Connecticut, upper-class families who are trying to deal with tumultuous social changes of the early 1970s, and their escapism through alcohol, adultery and sexual experimentation.
The film ended Lee's winning streak at the box office, but it was still critically acclaimed.
  • Budget: $18,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,038,061.
  • Worldwide gross: $16,011,975.

Ride with the Devil (1999)

"In a no-man's land between North and South, you didn't fight for the blue or grey, you fought for your friends and your family."
His sixth film. Based on the novel Woe to Live On by Daniel Woodrell, it stars Tobey Maguire, Skeet Ulrich, Jeffrey Wright, Jewel, Simon Baker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, James Caviezel, Thomas Guiry and Jonathan Brandis. Set during the American Civil War, it follows a group of men who join the First Missouri Irregulars, also known as the Bushwhackers — guerrilla units loyal to pro-Confederacy units of the state — and their war against Northern Jayhawkers allied with the Union army.
Despite commanding a $38 million budget, the film had a very limited three-day run, making less than $1 million. It also received mixed reviews from critics.
  • Budget: $38,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $635,096.
  • Worldwide gross: $635,096.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

"A timeless story of strength, secrets, and two warriors who would never surrender."
His seventh film. Based on the Chinese novel serialized between 1941 and 1942 by Wang Dulu, it stars Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, and Chang Chen. Master Li Mu Bai, a warrior, is about to retire and gives his sword to his lover Yu Shu Lien to keep it safe. However, the sword is stolen and now an embittered Li embarks on a mission to find it.
The stunt work was mostly performed by the actors themselves and Ang Lee stated in an interview that computers were used "only to remove the safety wires that held the actors" aloft. "Most of the time you can see their faces," he added. "That's really them in the trees." The film specifically targeted Western audiences rather than the domestic audiences who were already used to Wuxia films. As a result, high-quality English subtitles were needed. Ang Lee, who was educated in the West, personally edited the subtitles to ensure they were satisfactory for Western audiences.
Whatever were the expectations for this, the film exceeded them by a large margin. After a limited release, it earned $8 million in its first wide domestic opening weekend. But the crazy thing was how insane were its legs; it didn't hit a sub $4 million weekend until its 12th wide weekend, and it even increased from some weekends. It closed with a colossal $128 million domestically, becoming the highest foreign-language film in United States, a record it still keeps, and it's twice as much as the second place, Life Is Beautiful. Worldwide, it earned $213.9 million worldwide, becoming a worldwide phenomenon and Lee's highest grossing film.
The film was widely acclaimed across the world, hailed as one of the greatest films of the century. The film led to a boost in popularity of Chinese wuxia films in the Western world, where they were previously little known, and led to films such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers, both directed by Zhang Yimou, being marketed towards Western audiences. It received 10 Oscar nominations (the most for a foreign film), including Best Picture and Best Director for Lee. It won four: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Art Direction, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. To this day, one of the most iconic foreign titles. Lee made history.
  • Budget: $17,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $128,530,421.
  • Worldwide gross: $213,978,518.

Hulk (2003)

"Unleash the fury."
His eighth film. Based on the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, it stars Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, Josh Lucas, and Nick Nolte. The film explores Bruce Banner's origins. After a lab accident involving gamma radiation, he transforms into a giant green-skinned humanoid with superhuman strength known as the Hulk whenever stressed or emotionally provoked. The United States military pursues him, and he clashes with his biological father, who has dark plans for his son.
Since 1990, Avi Arad and Gale Ann Hurd were working on a Hulk film, but Universal was struggling in finding the right script. Hurd brought her husband Jonathan Hensleigh as co-producer the following year, and Universal hired Industrial Light & Magic to create the Hulk with computer-generated imagery. Joe Johnston was hired as director, but he eventually left to work on another film, while Zak Penn was brought to rewrite. Hensleigh subsequently rewrote the script with J. J. Abrams. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski were also brought on board to rewrite, with Hensleigh deciding to direct the film himself despite not having directed before. By 1998, Universal put the film on hiatus due to its escalating $100 million budget and worries of Hensleigh directing his first film. $20 million was already spent on script development, computer animation, and prosthetics work. Hensleigh immediately went to rewrite the script to reduce the budget.
In 2001, Lee and his colleague James Schamus signed for the project, after Lee chose not to direct Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. He was dissatisfied with the script and commissioned Schamus for a rewrite, merging Banner's father with the Absorbing Man. Lee cited influences from King Kong, Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Beauty and the Beast, Faust, and Greek mythology to interpret the story. Schamus said he had found the storyline that introduced Brian Banner, allowing Lee to write a drama that again explored father-son themes. Schamus admitted to feeling pressure after the release of Spider-Man.
Eric Bana commented that the shoot was "Ridiculously serious... a silent set, morbid in a lot of ways." Lee told him that he was shooting a Greek tragedy, and that he would be making a "whole other movie" about the Hulk at Industrial Light & Magic. An example of Lee's arthouse approach to the film was taking Bana to watch a bare-knuckle boxing match. Bana would later disfavorably reflect on his experience making the film as the majority of the time he was working indoors while the rest of the cast interacted with a CGI recreation of the Hulk, somewhat limiting his screen time.
After the colossal success of Spider-Man, Universal mounted an extensive marketing campaign, which also highlighted Ang Lee's involvement. The film opened with a huge $62.1 million in its first weekend, the biggest June debut and the 16th biggest ever. However, the film had absolutely no legs at the box office. In its second weekend, it dropped a colossal 69.7%, which was the biggest for a film that opened above $20 million. In its third weekend, it fell another steep 56.3% and it kept falling until it left theaters, becoming the largest opener not to earn $150 million. It closed with $132 million domestically and $245 million worldwide. Good enough to be the 15th highest grossing film of the year and Lee's highest grossing film, but not a hit given its $137 million budget.
If Spider-Man was an immediate crowd-pleaser, Hulk was the exact opposite. It received polarizing reviews; while its ambition and style was praised, a lot criticized its CGI and very limited action ("too much talking and not enough smashing"). In subsequent years, some have praised the film as an ambitious film that deviated from the superhero formula, although it's still not widely considered as a beloved film. Lee admitted the challenges of the film, but stood proud of the film and its fans.
  • Budget: $137,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $132,177,234.
  • Worldwide gross: $245,285,165.

Brokeback Mountain (2005)

"Love is a force of nature."
His ninth film. Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, it stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams and Randy Quaid. Its plot depicts the complex romantic relationship between two American cowboys, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, in the American West from 1963 to 1983.
Screenwriter Diana Ossana discovered Annie Proulx's short story in October 1997, just days after its publication. She convinced writing partner Larry McMurtry to read it, who thought it was a "masterpiece". The pair asked Proulx if they could adapt it into a film screenplay; although she did not think that the story would work as a film, she agreed. The big challenge wasn't the script, it was about getting the film made in the first place.
Gus Van Sant attempted to make the film, hoping to cast Matt Damon and Joaquin Phoenix as Ennis and Jack, respectively. He also considered Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Ryan Phillippe and Josh Hartnett. Damon, who previously worked with Van Sant on Good Will Hunting, told the director, "Gus, I did a gay movie (The Talented Mr. Ripley), then a cowboy movie (All the Pretty Horses). I can't follow it up with a gay-cowboy movie!"
James Schamus, who was now the CEO of Focus Features, optioned the film rights in 2001. Pedro Almodovar was approached, but he felt he couldn't get his artistic freedom respected. At Ossana's request, Schamus showed the story and screenplay to Lee. Lee decided instead to make Hulk, and that film's experience left him exhausted, to the point that he considered retiring. When he was offered Brokeback, he changed his mind and agreed to direct. He was particularly drawn to the authentic rural American life and repression depicted in the story.
Ossana and McMurty suggested Heath Ledger, but the film studio thought he was not masculine enough. Regardless, Ledger got the script, who thought it was "beautiful" and put himself forward. Gyllenhaal reacted to the script positively and signed on for the role; he also did not want to miss the opportunity working with Lee and friend Ledger. Lee met with Mark Wahlberg for a role in the film, but Wahlberg declined as he was "creeped out" by the script. Gyllenhaal admired Ledger and described him as "way beyond his years as a human". Other actors were considered for the leads but Lee said they were too afraid to take on the roles.
You have to consider that while the world progressed a lot in the past years, 2005 was a very different era, so a film like Brokeback Mountain had a tough hill to climb. Some countries refused to play the film, while others censored it. LGBT films weren't big at the time, so it felt like there wouldn't be a big audience here.
And they were proven wrong.
The film debuted with $547,425 in 5 theaters, a huge $109,485 per-theater average. It had fantastic legs, eventually closing with a huge $83 million domestically. But the big surprise is that it was bigger overseas; it made $178 million worldwide, becoming Focus Features' highest grossing film. The film received universal acclaim on its release, touted as one of the greatest films of the century. It received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It won three: Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score. In a shocking decision, it lost Best Picture to Crash, a decision that has been reviled ever since. We'd like to say it's a polarizing decision... but let's face it, there are no Crash fans nowadays. Or at least, none that prefer that to Brokeback.
But at the end of the day, it doesn't matter; Brokeback may not have won the Oscar, but it won over the general public.
It wasn't the first LGBT film, not even close. But it might have been the most influential and a huge landmark.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $83,043,761.
  • Worldwide gross: $178,064,141.

Lust, Caution (2007)

"The trap is set."
His tenth film. Based on the novella by Eileen Chang, it stars Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Tang Wei, Anupam Kher, Joan Chen, Wang Leehom and Shyam Pathak. The film is set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, when the city was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army and ruled by the puppet government led by Wang Jingwei. The film depicts a group of Chinese university students from The University of Hong Kong who plot to assassinate a high-ranking special agent and recruiter working for the puppet government by luring him into a honey trap.
The actors who played university classmates, spent six months of preproduction in Hong Kong just to get into character and understand the period before filming. During this period the group of actors, including Tang Wei and Wang Leehom became very close friends. Both Tang Wei and Tony Leung Chiu-wai were asked whether the sex scenes in the movie were unsimulated. Tang Wei responded, "In the movie, we are just doing what we should do to have a baby." As for Tony Leung, he responded, "When the bodies collide with each other, it is indeed like a fake show!" The film was rated NC-17 in North America for its explicit sex scenes, and Lee made it clear he would not re-cut the film. Despite that, the version released in China was cut by about seven minutes (by Lee himself) to make it suitable for younger audiences, since China has no rating system.
The film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim. Due to the rating, it only earned $4 million domestically. But it was much bigger overseas, where it earned $67 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing NC-17 film (a record it still keeps).
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $4,604,982.
  • Worldwide gross: $67,091,915.

Taking Woodstock (2009)

"Take the trip."
His 11th film. Based on the memoir by Elliot Tiber and Tom Monte, it stars Demetri Martin, Paul Dano, Dan Fogler, Henry Goodman, Jonathan Groff, Emile Hirsch, Eugene Levy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Imelda Staunton and Liev Schreiber. Elliot's parents own a motel in Catskills, New York. To overcome the family's financial crisis, Elliot offers the organisers of the Woodstock music and art festival boarding and lodging in the motel.
The film received mixed reviews, and bombed at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $7,460,204.
  • Worldwide gross: $9,975,737.

Life of Pi (2012)

"Don't lose hope."
His 12th film. Based on the novel by Yann Martel, it stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Rafe Spall, Gérard Depardieu and Adil Hussain. The storyline revolves around two survivors of a shipwreck who are on a lifeboat stranded in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. One is a sixteen-year-old Indian boy named Pi Patel and the other is a ferocious Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
Fox 2000 Pictures executive Elizabeth Gabler acquired the film rights in February 2003. M. Night Shyamalan was attached to direct, and he was expected to film it after The Village. But he dropped to instead make Lady in the Water, "I was hesitant [to direct] because the book has kind of a twist ending. And I was concerned that as soon as you put my name on it, everybody would have a different experience." Other directors considered were Alfonso Cuarón and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, both of which declined.
In 2009, Lee was hired, but the film was stuck in development hell when he asked for a $120 million budget. But the revival of 3-D motivated Fox in greenlighting the film under Lee's terms. As Lee started casting, one of the actors involved was Tobey Maguire, who would play a reporter. But it was later reported that Lee chose to cut his scenes, feeling he wanted to emphasize an entirely international cast. His scenes were re-shot with Rafe Spall.
Fox mounted an extensive marketing campaign selling the film as "the next Avatar" in terms of visuals and 3-D. And it fucking killed it at the box office. It earned $124.9 million domestically, which was considered a soft performance. But the real money was in the rest of the world; the film broke records in countries like China, United Kingdom, India and Mexico. It earned a colossal $609 million worldwide, easily becoming Lee's highest grossing film. An absolutely insane performance.
The film also received critical acclaim, praised for its CGI and 3-D. It received 11 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. And it won four: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Score, and then Lee himself won his second Oscar for Best Director, becoming the first Asian to win the award twice. And just like that, he cemented himself as one of the greatest filmmakers of our era. And here's how he celebrated it; going to In-N-Out.
  • Budget: $120,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $124,987,023.
  • Worldwide gross: $609,016,565.

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016)

"To walk the path of a hero, you have to see how it all began."
His 13th film. Based on the novel by Ben Fountain, it stars Joe Alwyn, Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel, Steve Martin, and Chris Tucker. After a horrifying battle in Iraq, Private Billy Lynn and his fellow comrades are brought home for a victory tour. Soon, he recollects the harsh realities of the war and struggles to cope with life.
The film used an unprecedented shooting and projection frame rate of 120 frames per second in 3D at 4K UHD resolution, which Lee terms the "whole shebang". It is the first feature film ever to be shot in such a high frame rate, over twice the previous record (Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, shot at 48 fps) and five times the standard speed of 24 fps. Lee undertook such a bold step after reading the book since he wanted the film to be an "immersive" and "realistic" experience of the reality and emotional journey of soldiers.
Due to the complexity involved in shooting at a very high frame rate, Lee could not afford to do many takes even for a single scene. Every shot was difficult and at the same time precious. He would rehearse every scene beforehand and would conduct regular morning meetings with the key crew members to highlight things they needed to be alert on. Shooting close-up shots in 3D with such high resolution meant the cast could not wear make-up and could not deliver less-than-authentic performances. Since no make-up was allowed, make-up artist Luisa Abel spent months of preparation on their skin tones. Throughout filming, the production team had to rethink everything, including different approaches to lighting as the camera needed extra lights due to the higher frame rates.
Due to the complexity of the film's unprecedented high frame rate and the cost of installing equipment capable of projecting the film in its intended format, only five theaters globally were equipped to show it at its highest resolution and maximum frame rate: two in the United States (one at a theater in New York City's AMC Lincoln Square where the film had its world premiere and the other in Los Angeles's the ArcLight Hollywood), and one theater each in Taipei, Beijing, and Shanghai.
The film opened in 2 theaters (New York City's AMC Lincoln Square and Los Angeles's the ArcLight Hollywood's Cinerama Dome), which were the only ones in the country to play the film at 120fps and the ticket prices at both locations running $20 or higher. It made a pretty great $114,129, which made for a fantastic $57,064 per-theater average (the third best of the year). But when it hit wide release, the film was dead on arrival. It made just $901,062 in 1,176 theaters, which was one of the worst wide debuts ever. And then, despite having its second weekend fall on Thanksgiving, it collapsed by 77.3%. It closed after just 3 weeks with only $1.7 million domestically. It fared better overseas, where China made colossal $23.7 million. Worldwide, it made just $30.9 million, making it a box office flop. Reviews were mixed, and people were polarized over the high-frame rate; some deemed it immersive and impressive, while others found it distracting and flat.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $1,738,477.
  • Worldwide gross: $30,930,984.

Gemini Man (2019)

"Who will save you from yourself?"
His 14th film. It stars Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong. The film follows a retiring Force Recon Marine scout sniper who is targeted by a much younger clone of himself while on the run from a corrupt private military company.
In 1997, Darren Lemke sold his pitch for Gemini Man after impressing Don Murphy with an unproduced spec script. Warner Bros. Pictures pursued the project, but Walt Disney Pictures ultimately won out and Tony Scott would become attached to direct. Complications soon arose when the studio were planning how to make the film. The producers toyed with the idea of an actor play both roles through the use of visual effects, but Scott moved on from the film before any progress could be made.
The project was stuck in development hell, and saw many actors considered, such as Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Chris O'Donnell, Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Clint Eastwood and Jon Voight. Many directors were also considered, before Lee finally signed in 2017, with Smith also joining. Like his previous film, the film was shot digitally at an extra-high frame rate of 120 frames per second (fps), modified for 3D, this time on modified ARRI Alexa cameras mounted on STEREOTEC 3D Rigs.
Again, due to the requirements needed, only 14 theaters in North America could show the film at a 120fps 2K 3D high-frame rate (two in Los Angeles, two in Chicago, and one each in Miami, Orlando, New Orleans, Denver, New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Baltimore and Houston). Even then, the film was shot at 120fps 4K 3D, which means no theater showed its intended vision. Lee said that 120fps 2K 3D felt like the necessary avenue to make “Junior,” Smith’s digital avatar, a soulful character who could also appear to beat the living crap out of a real actor in the film’s many fight sequences.
The film received negative reviews, particularly for its CGI and story. And like his previous film, the high-frame rate received polarizing reactions. Despite the presence of a big star like Will Smith, the film flopped with just $173 million worldwide, against its $138 million budget, and losing an estimated $111 million for Paramount. Lee's attempt at high-frame rate was just not clicking with the public.
  • Budget: $138,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $48,546,770.
  • Worldwide gross: $173,469,516.

The Future

His next film, as confirmed in November 2022, is a Bruce Lee biopic. The lead actor will be Mason Lee, Ang's son. And he suggested he's not done with the 120fps high-frame rate, claiming he would continue using it in his next film for action sequences.

Across 14 films, he has made $1,727,122,572 worldwide. That's $123,365,898 per film.

The Verdict

Despite his past two films getting two of the worst reviews in his career, Lee has proved himself to be a very reliable director.
Something impressive about him is the versatility in his resume. A comic book film, a survival film, a LGBT film, a wuxia film, a sci-fi film, a post-war film, a Jane Austen film, a noir film, an erotic NC-17 thriller, a Western, and some romantic comedies. Even if some don't fully work, there's still some good and interesting aspects in him. And of course, the first Asian director to win 2 Oscars for Best Director. So if he wants to continue with the controversial 120fps high-frame rate, let him cook. Hopefully in more and more theaters worldwide.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Zack Snyder. Oh boy. This is where the fun begins.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... John McTiernan and Rob Reiner. Whaaaaat? Two posts for the price of one? You're welcome! It was a very tight race, and it was tough to choose one or the other. The former has the dishonor of going to director jail and real jail, while the latter had an incredible run before completely crashing with one of Roger Ebert's most hated films.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
June 17-23 Tony Scott Action films have not been the same ever since his death.
June 24-30 Roland Emmerich The King of disaster films.
July 1-7 John McTiernan & Rob Reiner The rise and fall of two once-great directors.
Who should be next after McTiernan and Reiner? That's up to you.

End Event: Power Theft The event starts players around Mt. Anon. The event starts with an anomaly opening up at mount anon and from ot, Romeo the admin appears and steps out laughing maniacally “it is time, people of aphrodite. Time that I take this islands power for my own!” Romeo then rises up into the air, hovering above the center of mt. Anon.. then 2b rushes up the side of the mountain and slashes Romeo with the virtuous contract, causing him to yell out in pain for a moment before quickly composing himself and fires a blast of lava towards 2b, knocking her off the mountain and onto the ground with a thud. He then fires another blast, attempting to finish off the islanders of aphrodite, but monika forms a shield of code that absorbs the blast before closing it. “Don’t worry about him, we’ll stop him before he can do anything harmful” monika says, and then both cloud and travis run up to the mountain, weapons drawn- and then in sync, they jump up into the air and travis performs quick and powerful slashes with his beam katana, while cloud fires multiple blade beams at Romeo, greatly damaging him and knocking him back down onto the mountain, as they both fall back down sure they’ve beaten him.. and they took that moment to rest, but just then as soon as they let their guards down.. romeo began laughing before getting up and dusting himself off and commanding his army of prismarine colossus to rise up from the water around the island and attack everyone on it. Then saying “Now, back to absorbing this pathetic heart of yours” and forming a small protective shield around himself and firing two guardian beams at the center of the island, glamrock freddy then throws everyone a Fazer blaster as him and sindel team up, using the combined efforts of the Fazer blasters and sindels sonic scream to stun the colossi, the additional Fazer blasters allowing the rest of the the islanders to fire at the collosi while they can’t move. Romeo then attempts to pull the power heart out, causing a small tremor as the power heart is ripped out from the core of the island, then once it’s all the way exposed he begins using the beams to absorb the crystallic energy. once the first set of colossus fall, another one walks up from the water almost immediately, and then monika seeing this, says “it’s no use. They just keep coming..” then she gets an idea, and says “alright, I have an idea. But- it’s a risky one..” “if the powerheart becomes corrupted, then it’s dark energy will drain the energy and power of anything making contact with it..” “but, as the heart is what controls everything on this island. If it gets corrupted, the islands landscape and everything would also become corrupted and sinister.. but it’s the only way” monika hesitates for a moment before manipulating and corrupting the powerheart. as the heart grows darker and begins to crack slightly, the influx of dark energy causes romeos beams to backfire, draining him of all his energy and admin powers and causing him to fall out of the sky, back onto the mountain and sliding down the side of it, hitting various things on his way down before eventually coming to a stop on the ground surrounded by everyone else. Romeo then lets out a weak cough, saying in a weak raspy voice “what.. h-happened?..” and link chimes in saying “you just got defeated by us.. now.” And link draws his sword, ready to finish off romeo.. but before he can, the powerheart lets out a big burst of dark energy, knocking everyone back and leaving a decent sized crater around it.

2024.06.08 02:17 leeroymlg Fortnite should have a permanent basic/ OG BR mode

Fortnite should have a permanent "basic"/ OG BR mode. No cars, no high damage mobility weapons, no crazy colab mythics, just a basic AR, SMG, shotgun, sniper, weapon loot pool. Just boots on the ground, raw gun gameplay. It sounds like another post asking for OG mode back, but it doesn't even have to be that. It can still be more or less the current season/ chapter loot pool, but only including the basic weapons. The wackiness and ever changing items, map, and gameplay is really what makes Fortnite stand out and keeps it fun and fresh year after year, but it doesn't always scratch that itch of just wanting a pure gun gameplay. Sometimes those mechanics are balanced and fun, but a lot of the time they're op and discourage casual players from playing. You can devote hours and hours to gaining skill on aim, tracking, recoil control, leading shots with bullet trajectory, just to get run over by someone in a car or obliterated by a goku blast. Sometimes you just want some good old normal gun gameplay without feeling disadvantaged because you're not using the meta water-bending item or zooming around in a turret mounted car. Sure it would probably get boring after sometime without all the "fun" items that Fortnite is known for, but that's why it should be a separate gamemode. For those who want to switch it up and play something more simple and straightforward but still want to keep playing on Fortnite and want to level their battle pass.

Hello, fellow modders!
As the title states, my FO4 crashes to desktop after a few minutes of gameplay and I don't know why. I didn't have this problem before. It just randomly started happening... I did however have loot reorganize my load order, but I am clueless about loadorders...

2024.06.07 06:29 RoseBlack2222 Out Of The Apartment (Part 4)

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Things have finally calmed down here to something in the vicinity of peace. I'll try not to complain too much since this is probably as good as it's going to get with Van and Roscoe living under the same roof. Speaking of whom, I'll be sharing their sequence of events in case there may be anything to glean from them. I'll relay Roscoe's perspective since I heard it firsthand. This was the morning of my terrifying escape at Walmart and Drake having to fight for survival in the gym.
Roscoe was already down in the dumps since the court ruling last month. His “no good two-timing bitch of an ex-wife” as he so eloquently put it was able to convince the judge overseeing their custody case that a small apartment stocked with booze and guns wasn't a safe place for two toddlers. Although it's not my place, I can't say I object to that ruling. To vent his frustrations, he and his buddies planned a weekend hunting trip. So they set off to set up camp about four hours from town.
For the most part, the trip was an enjoyable experience, just shooting, joking, and drinking among friends. That said, Roscoe witnessed some things I think should be mentioned. The first is that some animals were acting out of sorts. There was a river by the campsite that many of them were drinking from. I know that animals get thirsty too.
What Roscoe and the others found strange was that many of them were drinking from it simultaneously. Both predator and prey alike were standing side by side, lapping up water, but this went beyond thirst and into addiction. They were consuming such an enormous quantity that many of them threw up and collapsed. Many of them also appeared starved like they hadn't eaten in days. While none of them were scared by this, it did rub many of them the wrong way.
A deer approached their camp. Given that they are normally fickle creatures, this was odd. Yes, there are exceptions to this, and some are somewhat trusting of humans. That’s one reason a deer may not flee. The other is if there’s something wrong with it, brain disease, in this case.
Someone in the group pointed this out. Roscoe being Roscoe, though, said “I can still put it on my wall”. Then he put a bullet in it point blank. Not very sporting if you ask me. Then again, I suppose he needs a win every once in a while. Anyway, his friends weren't exactly happy about him firing off his rifle without warning in their vicinity. They proceeded to chastise him, throwing empty beer cans as they did.
The mood went from peculiar to unnerving at what occurred next. One person in the group was the first to notice it. The animals had stopped drinking and were now staring at them. Even from that distance, everyone could tell there was something in their eyes that didn't sit right with any of them. It was a sharpened hunger combined with a distinct awareness.
Nobody had seen anything like it and many thought they would be attacked. Roscoe also mentions he remembers the animals being thin like the water was the only thing they were consuming. Neither humans nor animals would break eye contact. Even armed, Roscoe and his friends were severely outnumbered. Luckily for them, things didn't escalate to that point.
The animals went back to what they were doing. Everyone in Roscoe's group decided to cut the hunting trip short. There was still the deer he'd shot. Nobody trusted the meat from it. Roscoe wanted to get something to take home so he cut its head off to mount.
Then everyone went home. By the time Roscoe got back to our neighborhood, the sun was rising and he wanted to get the deer's head inside before anyone spotted him. I should mention at this point that deer hunting is only permissible during the winter months in our state. If reported, a violator will suffer a fine and possibly have their hunting license as well as their gun taken. In a stroke of bad luck, Van happened to come outside in that instant.
He caught Roscoe carrying the deer's head and said he was going to report him which led to their altercation. Moving onto Van, he had a conversation with Drake who in turn told me about it. Van's job at the town hall mainly revolves around answering calls, shredding documents, sorting through files, and receiving all the complaints Schneider got on his computer. That sounds miserable as hell. Our jobs at Goodwill may not be the most lucrative, but at least we aren't working for a scumfuck like him.
I'm not trying to hold that against Van. I understand people need to earn a living. For his sequence of events, things were relatively normal except that they were having him shred way more documents than normal. Drake asked him if he noticed anything odd on them. He said he has to get rid of so many that there isn't time to read even a single paper.
He did overhear something peculiar on the day prior to his time off. He was getting back from a restroom break and walking past Schneider's office. He stopped when he heard yelling coming from it. Curious, he figured a little eavesdropping couldn't hurt. Of the bits and pieces he picked up on, he gathered that someone was trying to put pressure on Schneider over a deal.
With whom, we don't know. While it can't be confirmed that's related to what's happening now, the timing does raise a red flag. Van said that when Schneider left for the day, he looked rattled. From there, nothing else noteworthy happens until his fight with Roscoe. That brings us to today.
While Hummers are loud and obnoxious, they are also roomy and we took advantage of that, packing up the rest of the groceries. Then we were off. I helped by directing Roscoe to the road we were going to use. When we reached it, we realized the Hummer may be a bit too big to drive through it.
“Fuck it,” Roscoe said, flooring the gas.
At first, it seemed as if the Hummer was stuck. He kept at it and soon we heard branches begin cracking. Pushing our way through, we were on our way out.
“By the way, what’s the plan once we’re done with this?” he asked.
“I got cousin Me and Gus can crash with,” Drake said. “What about you?”
“I have an uncle out of state who’s a pretty cool guy. I’ll have to give him a call.”
I turned to Van.
“What about you?”
“Me? I’ve got savings so I’ll be fine for a while. I’ll probably stay at another motel or a rented room until I can get back on my feet.”
“Of course, you’d be the only one of us who can save money working for shit Schneider.”
Van once again gave Roscoe that customer service smile.
“I get paid well because I’m good at what I do, unlike some people.”
Seeing Roscoe’s glare in the rearview, Drake and I intervened.
“Guys, we can please not do this shit right now?” Drake asked. “Once we’re in the clear, have it, but until then let’s try to get along.”
Roscoe and Van simmered down, only giving each other the occasional dirty look. We continued in silence and were relieved when we finally reached the path's exit.
“Thank Christ,” Roscoe said. “That fucking scraping was driving me up the wall,”
All of us were glad town was behind us or so we thought. I still had the binoculars and once again, I glanced through them. What I saw, nearly made my heart stop.
“Hit the brakes,” I abruptly screamed.
Roscoe slammed them out of reflex giving us all whiplash.
“The hell’s the matter with you, Gus?” he asked sharply.
Instead of answering, I handed him the binoculars. Upon raising them to his eyes, his face turned pale. It was the same when they were handed to Drake and Van. Someone set up a blockade at the town limit. If that wasn’t bad enough, it was being guarded by people in swat armor and cops, several of whom we recognized.
We also saw a handful wearing hazmat suits. However, the most disturbing thing is it turned out we weren’t the only ones with our particular plan of escape. This was evidenced by the corpses getting bagged away with bullet wounds in their foreheads as well as all the abandoned vehicles.
“They’re keeping people here,” I said.
Yeah, that was a no-shit statement. I just needed to get it off my chest.
“Those government mother fuckers,” Roscoe spat, “but why are the police working with them?”
Answering that was a whole other topic. We needed to focus on the one at hand.
“Maybe we can cut through the forest on foot?” Van suggested.
“That would take hours,” Drake told him. “They got snipers over there which means they’re probably checking the woods. Not to mention, we don’t know how many zombies we might run into.”
“You know what? I say we get the guns in the back and blast our way through these sons a bitches,” Roscoe said.
“Roscoe, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but they have basically a small army and, there’s fours of only three who know how to use guns, “ I pointed out.
Roscoe was about to object when a sniper bullet went through the windshield, piercing through his eye and seat and into the back seat directly above Van’s shoulder. He slumped over lifeless, falling on the steering wheel and making his horn go off. We freaked the fuck out and crouched right before being met with a barrage.
“We have to get out of here,” Van shouted over the sound of shattering glass.
“You think we don’t fucking know that?” Drake snapped.
If they hit one of the tries, it was game over for us. Roscoe’s foot was still on the brakes. Drake shifted the Hummer in reverse and then put Roscoe; 's foot on the gas. Luckily for us, the path was straight so backing out of it was relatively simple, provided us not getting shot at. When it was safe, we all straightened out.
Drake opened the driver’s door and pushed Roscoe out. Then he got in the seat. We didn’t have time to catch our breath since who should be waiting for us other than a hoard of zombies? In hindsight, maybe all the noise we made snapping branches wasn’t t our stealthiest option. Although in fairness to us, we thought we wouldn't have to worry about that.
Like ants to sugar water, they were on us, breaking through holes in the windshield.
“Gus, Van, guns,” Drake screamed, trying to drive with them clinging to the hood.
Scrambling, we grabbed some pistols from that back. I undid the safety on one and tossed it to Drake. He caught it and when a zombie broke through, he pulled the trigger. It rolled off and we ran over it, hearing a popping sound as we did. On his side, Van was screaming and panic-firing
“Don’t waste ammo. It only takes one shot to the head to kill them.” I yelled.
I was covering both my window as well as the back windshield.
“I can't see anything like this,” Drake exclaimed.
A zombie managed to poke its head into the passenger side. Without looking, he put a round in it. We eventually managed to take them all out in time to realize we were heading for the edge of a cliff. Drake tried in vain to stop. The Hummer hit a curve and flipped on its side, rolling downward all the way.
It stopped, now a wreck with smoke coming out of its hood. Then the engine went dead.
“Is everyone still in one piece?” I asked.
I felt something trickle down my face. When I went to wipe it away, there was blood on my palm.
“No, but I'll live,” Drake replied.
“I think I fractured something,” Van said, in pain.
Roscoe's camping supplies included a first aid kit. We used it to mend our injuries as best we could.
“Okay, now where exactly are we?” Drake asked.
Where we'd ended up was another part of the woods that stretched on for miles.
“I don't know,” I said. “Do you think we can climb back up?”
“Not in our condition and besides, it's too flat.”
“What should we do then?”
Drake glanced at the Hummer and then back to us.
“I think our best bet is to see if we can get this thing working again.”
Yeah, so things didn't turn out the way we hoped. I'm afraid we've been at this for hours with no luck. My phone battery is almost out and I know it's only a matter of time until the zombies find us. We still have plenty of firepower so the three of us can at least make a heroic final stand, well me and Drake anyway. If I don't update again know that I want my last words to be fuck this shit. Fuck it hard.

The Life Guards are the domestic intelligence and security service of the Terran Confederation and its principal federal law enforcement agency. They are charged with protecting the nation's government officials, investigating and solving federal crimes, counter-espionage, and serving as an elite wartime strike force. Their reputation as professionals and brave soldiers has lent them many nicknames; the Chancellor's Cavalry, the Meritorious Ones, the Military Household, and the Black Dogs.
The Life Guards' origins are clouded, but they are generally considered to have originally started from sixteen ARIAs (Aerial Rocket Infantry Automata) handpicked from the 1st St. Adrian's Wing by the founder of the Terran Confederation Chancellor Gustaf Carlsson himself. Since then, they have been modified, retrofitted, and expanded from their bodyguard duties to being federal gendarmerie and special forces operatives. They have four branches: the Dragoon Guards, the Life Guards Gendarmerie, the Life Guards Couriers, and the Horse Grenadiers.
  • The Dragoon Guards are the Life Guards' most well-known branch. They are assigned as guards around government buildings (such as the Hudsonburg) and protection detail for high-ranking government officials. On the battlefield, they are meant to deal quick decisive strikes and hit-and-run attacks on the battlefield. They also share counter-terrorism duty with the Life Guards Gendarmerie. Unlike the Gendarmerie, the Dragoon Guards are also sent on missions on foreign soil.
  • The Life Guards Gendarmerie (also known as simply the Gendarmerie) are charged with policing both military and civilian matters. As the Terran Confederation bears a decentralized government however, they mainly interfere in serious crimes such as fraud, conspiracy, corruption, treason, and espionage; and let the palatinate's respective police department handle law enforcement on most matters. There are exceptions, such as the capital New York City where they also act as regular law enforcement. Due to their policing duties, they are restricted from using their heavier armaments unless in dire circumstances.
  • The Couriers originally were despatch riders but have since become the Confederation's domestic intelligence service, defending the nation's government against cybercrime and plots to disrupt government order.
  • The Horse Grenadiers are the heavy weapons corps of the Life Guards. They use knee mortars, remotely detonated explosives, and grenades to pierce enemy armor. Due to the explosive nature of the weapons they wield, the Horse Grenadiers seldom deploy on home soil (unless for guard duty, and even then are not allowed to use their signature weapons).
Organization
The reason for the Life Guards' designation as a cavalry unit is an enigma to many, but some military theorists posit that a reason is that ARIAs fill the same role historical cavalry do: agile heavy hitters best used in an open battlefield, zooming across with a built-in flight system (or hoverbike, if they're in the junior ranks) instead of a horse. Their dual nature as both aerial and ground personnel have led them to use the same ranks as the Aeronautica, while organization-wise being a mixture of them and the Army. Traditionally, a squad consists of nine ARIAs (ARIAs belonging to the Life Guards are uniquely termed "dragoons") that have been divided into three flights of 3. A wing consists of three squadrons, and one regiment consists of 5 wings. This has led regiments of the Life Guards to be quite small, but nonetheless they have proven to be just as deadly (or even deadlier, in some cases) as larger numbers of regular troops - lending to their overseas nickname as "the Black Dogs."
Appearance
Their typical uniform is a single-breasted armored Prussian blue military tunic with white knee-length folded-in coattails, white cuffs, and a white mandarin collar displaying rank and branch; paired with a white Sam Brownes belt, Prussian blue trousers with a single thin white stripe going down the left leg, and black knee-high boots with folded down collars and retractable spurs. The squadron number and province of origin is sewn onto the left shoulder part of the sleeve, while the flag of the Terran Confederation and rank markings are sewn on the right. NCOs wear white-tipped capes and COs wear Prussian blue-tipped capes. Role insignia badges are traditionally worn on the right side of the collar. The dye used to create the shade of Prussian blue has a unique composition that has led it to appear as black in low-light conditions. The standard-issue headgear is a black titanium pickelhaube with a cream white horsehair plume, the Confederation's coat of arms engraved in brass as a helmet badge, a blue-white-blue metal cockade to hold the chinstrap, and a brass visor. There are also ear holes for the distinct prick-earlike auditory sensors of dragoons. The plume is removed during combat.
Armaments
An individual dragoon's armaments differ vastly depending on what model they are and where they were manufactured, but there are weapons common across all of them.
• FN-Longinus Modelé 53 FAL ("Longinus Automatic Rifle", Dragoon Guards and Horse Grenadiers)
• Cassius Type 40 Machine Pistol ("Cassius-40", Gendarmerie and Couriers)
• Type 11 Cavalry Long Pistol (Dragoon Guards, Gendarmerie, Horse Grenadiers)
• Type 11 Cavalry Short Pistol (Couriers)
• Type 114 portable anti-tank sniper rifle (snipers only)
• M2 Browning-L (machine gunners only)
• Winchester Model 1887 (may or may not be used depending on mission)
• Shoulder-mounted standard-issue machine gun/autocannon/rotary for respective model
• Various rockets (either hardpoint-mounted or internally stored)
• Plasma sabre (Dragoon Guards, Horse Grenadiers)
• Twin plasma knives (Couriers)
• Twin metal bastons (Gendarmerie)
• Falbegear (Valkyries of all branches)
Tactics
External
Dragoons make heavy use of their maneuverability and disproportionate amount of firepower for their size in battle. Rarely ever do they attack alone or stay in one location for long. If one is only visible, it is likely two or three of his compatriots are ready to attack or flank. A squadron will often have their first flight open fire as their second flight prepares their ammunition. Once the first flight moves to reload, the second flight fires and repeats the cycle.
Internal
Not much is known how the Life Guards operate on home soil, but they do seem to act with the same modus operandi as palatinate police departments, albeit more extensive and with more focus on investigation.
FAQs, answered by the Confederate government
"Are dragoons AGIs?"
Yes. Dragoons are a rare case of Artificial General Intelligence being deployed on a mass scale for military purposes; a testament to the sheer technological might of the Terran Confederation. However, Confederate regulations demand that all AGIs made within the nation be programmed as humanlike as possible to decrease chances of defecting.
"Are the Life Guards part of the Confederate Armed Forces?"
Yes, as their own branch; despite their policing and domestic duties. Depending on their situation, they are either under the Ministry of Defence or the Ministry of the Interior.

2024.06.07 04:28 Unable_Tennis_7236 New to Flipping / TSM / AAA / Cross Realm Flipping.....Progress Update

I posted in the AAA & TSM Disc channels, but figured if others like me (sat on the sidelines for years thinking I couldn't ever get started so why waste my time), I wanted to post.
Years later I said, well might as well try this.
1.) Hit a low of 3mil2.) Started a 2nd account (made a 2nd email and sent myself a refer a friend - free summons and free 30day game tokens every couple of months3.) Download, setup and paid for AAA (Azeroth Auction Assassin) - this took the longest (setup), but WAY worth the time and money because it taught me a ton - plus the disc channels for TSM & AAA are super helpful4.) Learned how to use TSM, Undermine Exchange and Point Blank Sniper (later stopped BPS and stuck with AAA)5.) Started small (pets and cheap mounts) and moved my way up in price and quantity as i earned more.6.) Started with 5 servers, then expanded to 10, 15 and now 30 - even mix of New Player, Low, Med, High and Full - for buying flips and selling depending on servers
Started around 90 days ago and during the month of April went from 3mil to 50m, then in May from 50m to today having gold cap on two toons, around 20m liquid and 50m in items on AH right now (roughly 90m net worth).
can seem to post the pix, but posted about it in TSM channel and AAA channel (Toeknee_AtX): here is the link
https://discord.com/channels/973380473281724476/1041918710102900837/1232513788461322320
If I figure out how to post the TSM graphs I will add, but here is the link to AAA: https://github.com/ff14-advanced-market-search/AzerothAuctionAssassin/blob/main/README.md
Anyways long story short = Don't wait to start, TSM, AAA, Cross Realm trading worth the time and money!!
Note: I'm by no means an expert or honestly not that rich compared to other goblins, but I hope others read this and know anyone can do it!! Jump in the water is fine!

2024.06.06 23:39 NourishedCumin Who is your swordsman in GD?

Building around their natural talent, the GD team got more sniper (Claude and Ignatz) and mounted unit (Lorenz and Leonie) but no swordsman (unless you make Lysithea a mortal savant which is not that great). Do you usually recruit other students or just make one of the original team to be trained in sword?
With BE there are Petra and Jeritza, and with BL there is Felix. I’m recruiting Petra and Felix now :(

2024.06.06 23:25 -343-Guilty-Spark- BTB Update Halo Infinite

https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/btb-update
Header Image [Imgur]
Earlier this week, the new Tenrai IV Operation went live and brought with it the highly anticipated Match Composer feature along with some additional updates. We have also implemented some changes to maps and modes in Big Team Battle, seeking to address community feedback and playlist data that we have been collecting to improve the experience for players.
Let’s take a look at what’s new!

OUR GOALS

This quality-of-life update was made with four core goals in mind for improving gameplay in BTB.
1: We want to see an increase in Flag Steals and Flag Captures so that fewer CTF matches in BTB end from the time limit expiring due to stalemate scenarios.
2: We want to reduce extended stalemates in certain Zone Sets for Total Control. We also want to make the Total Control Zone Sets as fair as possible for both teams on all maps.
3: We want to increase and improve the fun factor and practicality of using vehicles in BTB—especially Warthogs.
4: We want to increase the reliability of finding a hard counter to specific enemy strategies. Knowing you can always get to a Hydra spawner will help players counter air vehicles, for example.

MAPS & MODES

GENERAL
  • We have added more vehicles across the board. This will improve the amount of vehicular combat present in BTB by adding in more of the mechanical mayhem we all know and love.
  • Flag Placements have been updated to increase the number of Flag Steal attempts and successful Flag Captures.
  • For BTB: CTF, Flag Return Time has been increased from 40 seconds to 60 seconds. This helps add more exciting gameplay moments when both teams are battling around a pulled Flag.
  • Total Control zone placements now match what is found in BTB Heavies. These placements improve the low of the match by reducing stalemate scenarios. They're also tuned to be more fair for both teams.
  • UI Markers for Power Weapons and Power Equipment are now enabled.
  • Static Respawn Zones have been enabled for all symmetrical maps when playing BTB: Slayer. Team spawns will no longer flip in this mode.
  • Sniper- and Launcher-class Weapon Racks will now spawn static selections of weapons.
  • Dynamo Grenade spawners have been reduced or completely eliminated on most maps for improved vehicular gameplay.
  • Disabled Campaign Weapon Variants from having a chance to spawn in Weapon Drop Pods.
    FRAGMENTATION
A red Spartan holding a Stalker Rifle is sprinting on Fragmentation. [Imgur]
  • Sniper-class Power Weapon Pads at Hex Archway and Rock Archway will now only spawn the S7 Sniper Rifle.
  • Sniper-class Weapon Racks at each base are now set to always spawn the Stalker Rifle.
  • Launcher-class Weapon Racks at Canyon Base and Cliff Base are set to always spawn the Hydra.
  • Launcher-class Weapon Racks at Rock Power Node and Hex Power Node are set to always spawn the Ravager.
  • Launcher-class Weapon Racks at Center Rock Path and Center Hex Path are set to always spawn the Hydra.
  • Dynamo Grenade spawns have been reduced—they have a chance of spawning in the Loot Caves, but nowhere else on the map.
  • The Center Passage Powerup Pad is set to always spawn Active Camo.
  • Powerup Pads set to always spawn Active Camo have been added behind the bases (at Hex Pocket and Rock Pocket).
  • Added a Vehicle Pad that spawns the Ghost in front of each base.
  • Added a Vehicle Pad that spawns the Banshee at both bases.
  • Added two neutral Vehicle Pads that spawn Razorbacks to middle of the map (near Broken Ring and Wreckage).
    DEADLOCK
Halo Infinite screenshot of Deadlock [Imgur]
  • Two new Power Weapon Pads set to spawn S7 Sniper Rifles now reside near the center of the map (at each overlooking side of the central trench).
  • Precision-class Weapon Racks at the bottom of each base will now guarantee that one spawns a BR75 Battle Rifle and the other spawns a VK78 Commando.
  • The Sniper-class Power Weapon Pad at the Pelican Crash Site will now always spawn the Skewer.
  • Sniper-class Weapon Racks at Bridge and Watchtower are now set to always spawn the Stalker Rifle.
  • Launcher-class Weapon Racks near High Cargo and Low Cargo have been set to always spawn the Hydra.
  • Launcher-class Weapon Racks at each base have been set to always spawn the Ravager (right next to the Shade Turrets).
  • The Melee-class Power Weapon Pad at the center of the map has been replaced by a Grenade Pad. It is the only Grenade Pad that will spawn Dynamo Grenades and will serve as a counter to the new vehicles that have been added to the map.
  • The Power Weapon Pad in the Cave is now set to always spawn the M41 SPNKr.
  • The Powerup Pad at Bridge has been moved to High Cargo and will now always spawn Active Camo.
  • The Powerup Pad at Watchtower will now always spawn Active Camo.
  • Equipment Pads that spawn the Repair Field have been moved to the top of each base.
  • Mounted Scrap Cannons have been added to Bridge and Watchtower.
  • Added a Vehicle Pad that spawns the Gungoose at both bases.
  • Added a Vehicle Pad that spawns the Chopper at both bases.
  • Added two neutral Vehicle Pads that spawn Razorbacks at the middle of the map (near Crash Site and Low Cargo).
  • Smoothed out the natural geometry at Eagle Base’s ramp in front of the Gungoose Vehicle Pad for improved player and vehicle traversal.
    HIGHPOWER
Halo Infinite screenshot of a Scorpion and Wraith on Highpower [Imgur]
  • The added geometry from the BTB Heavies variant of Highpower has been added to the standard Highpower map. This includes the added cover at Cliffs, as well as the extra cover behind Cobra Base.
  • The Total Control Zone at Lakeside (near Eagle Base) has been moved into the road at Cliffs for both the Alpha and Delta Total Control Zone Sets.
  • The Melee-class Power Weapon Pad at Cliffs near Eagle Team base has been moved to the nearby landing pad and has been changed to a Sniper-class Power Weapon Pad that spawns the S7 Sniper.
  • A new Sniper-class Power Weapon Pad has been added near Rocky Pass for Cobra Team that spawns the S7 Sniper.
  • The Sniper-class Power Weapon Pad at High Power has been set to always spawn a Skewer.
  • The Launcher-class Power Weapon Pad at Center Pit will now always spawn the Cindershot.
  • The Sniper-class Weapon Racks at the landing pad behind both bases will now always spawn the Stalker Rifle.
  • The Launcher-class Weapon Racks at the top of each base will now always spawn the Hydra.
  • The Launcher-class Weapon Racks at Overlook and Rocky Pass will now always spawn the Ravager.
  • The Grenade Pad in the “sneaky-cliff-wall” at Cave Pit is now the only one on the map to spawn Dynamo Grenades.
  • A Mounted Chaingun Turret has been added to the top of each base and in front of each base.
  • The Vehicle Pads on the landing pad at each base now will spawn the Banshee.
  • Vehicle Pads have been added to the top of each base that can spawn either the Banshee or the Wasp. The vehicle chosen at the start of the game will remain the same for the duration of the match. Both bases will have the same vehicle to ensure balanced gameplay.
  • A Vehicle Pad that spawns the Ghost is now present at both bases.
  • The Equipment Pad that spawned the Grappleshot in Cave has been replaced with a Powerup Pad that will always spawn Active Camo.
  • An Equipment Pad that spawns the Repulsor has been added to the Ridgeline area. This now means both teams will have access to a Repulsor.
    BREAKER
Halo Infinite screenshot of a Warthog on Breaker as the mining laser fires [Imgur]
  • The kinetic launcher in Tunnel from the Heavies variant of Breaker has been added to the standard Breaker map.
  • The Launcher-class Power Weapon Pad in Tunnel will now always spawn the M41 SPNKr.
  • Replaced the Sniper-class Power Weapon Pads at each base with Launcher-class Power Weapon Pads that spawn Cindershots.
  • A neutral Sniper-class Power Weapon Pad that spawns the S7 Sniper Rifle has been added to Blast House.
  • A neutral Sniper-class Weapon Rack that spawns the Shock Rifle has been added to “Flappy Flap” (at mid near Launch Ramps).
  • Eagle Team’s right-side Sniper-class Weapon Rack has been moved closer to initial spawn and will now always spawn the Stalker Rifle.
  • Cobra Team’s Sniper-class Weapon Rack will now always spawn the Stalker Rifle.
  • The Launcher-class Weapon Racks below the Blast House kinetic launchers are set to spawn Ravagers.
  • The Powerup Pads have been moved to each side of the Blast House and will now always spawn Active Camo.
    BREAKER (ONE FLAG CTF)

2024.06.06 22:46 MustelidusMartens West Germany in the Cold War and in NATO Part 3 (Sperrverband Weser-Aller)

West Germany in the Cold War and in NATO Part 3 (Sperrverband Weser-Aller)
Today i will bring you the Sperrverband Weser-Aller, an ad-hoc created task force based around the Verfügungstruppenkommando 42, the 3rd Brigade of the US 2nd Armored Division and the hanseatic Heimatschutzregiment 72.
Although this division is semi-fictional, all of the component units are real and the division is based on a plausible scenario and historical precedents. In the following post i will go into the logic of the creation of the Sperrverband, short introductions of its component units and some background information on the subunits of the Territorialheer of the German army.
East German military planning according to Siegfried Lautsch. Notice the importance of the Elbe crossings and the later Weser and Aller crossing. Source: Die NVA-Operationsplanung für Norddeutschland 1983‑1988 in : Wege zur Wiedervereinigung
"Semi-fictional?"
You might be confused due to the theme of my posts being about historical accuracy and flavor for Germany, but we are in an alternative history scenario after all.
Looking at the German army in 1989 there are a lot of forces that are interesting, but are sometimes too small on their own, or do not work well ingame. If a force like this is interesting enough i look at its history and its possible wartime deployment to see if there is a possible option. In the following parts i will explain the wartime role of the VTK 42, give you a short overview of the 2nd Armored Division (Forward) and the Heimatschutzregiment 72, including some additional information about the German territorial forces. The last part will go into the newly created Sperrverband and what its role could be in a fictional WW3.
Defensive planning and deployment of regular NATO forces. Note that Bremen and Verden are in the NL defense sector, that was largely undefended. Source: Die Operationsplanung der NATO by Helmut Hammeric In: Wege zur Wiedervereinigung
As described in my initial post, the Verfügungstruppekommandos were basically divisional staffs without troops attached (There is an excemption, as always in the German military) that could act as an command staff for task forces. The VTK 42 was one of the VTKs without any attached troops, but with the Kampftruppenschule in Munster acting as a planned addition during wartime.
A possible role for this VTK could be the defense of important fixed facilities, like bridges, the defense against air assault / air landings or blocking of enemy breakthroughs.
As the Kampftruppenschule in Munster had a large amount of vehicles (Among them MBTs, IFVs etc.) that could act as a kind of armored force for the VTK, possibly staffed by personell of the armor school. In addition to that the VTK could employ smaller territorial forces close if needed.
Except from the Bundesarchiv File BH 8-3/558. A map of possible attack avenues of the WTO forces. In real life the region around and south of Bremen would have been in the attack sector of the 5. Armee of the NVA. For a better overview of the forces involved in the Sperrverband i marked the positions of the three major units: 1 = 2nd AD (F), 2 = HschRgt 72, 3 = VTK 42
The 2nd Armored Division (Forward), was (confusingly) the forward deployed Brigade of the 2nd Armored division. During the late 70s it was deployed to Garlstedt north of Bremen, to act as the core of the III Corps that would/could reinforce NORTHAG during wartime.
It is pretty unclear what its actual role in a conflict was, as it does not really appear in NATO planning that i have found and does not seem to act as a reserve for NORTHAG. During the REFORGER '87 excercise it supported US troops in securing Weser crossing, to allow them safe passage, which makes it ideal for our Sperrverband.
The stationing of the 3rd Brigade of the 2nd AD seems to have been largely political according to historical documents of the US 7th Army. Source: Strengthening NATO: Stationing of the 2D Armored Division (Forward) in Northern Germany.
The Heimatschutzregiment 72 was a Bremen based Heimatschutzregiment that was responsible for home defense operations around Bremen. This regiment was probably one of the better equipped ones and likely had access to full motorization. With its three "Jägerkompanien" and its mortar battery it could not act as a proper fighting unit, but had enough men and firepower to provide limited security and monitoring tasks.
Excerpt from a STAN of the Jägerkompanie B3. B3 was one of the two possible ORBATs for truck mounted Jäger units in the Heimatschutzbrigaden.
As explained in the last part about the 12. Panzerdivision Jäger were split into two larger parts, the ones in the field army and the ones in the territorial army.
After i introduced the Heimatschutzregiment 72 will explain the difference between the Jäger in the Heimatschutzbrigaden and the ones in the Heimatschutzregimenter (And the Heimatschutzkompanien, which were not name as Jäger, but were compatible to the ones in the Regiments).
Heimatschutzbrigaden were (With exceptions, you will notice that this is a theme), as the name says Brigade sized formations, that was made up of two Jägerbataillone (Either in the "A", "B" or "MTW A" STANs) and two armored battalions.
The Jäger units in the Heimatschutzbrigaden were manned by reservists who had served in the Jäger units of the field army, were trained as Jäger and could act like ones. In addition to that the Brigades had support assets including mortar carriers, artillery etc.
As such the Heimatschutzbrigaden were weak and dated, but still full combat units.
Heimatschutzregimenter were made up of personell that served in various capacities (As evidenced by their "ATN"s, roughly comparable to US MOS. The Jäger in Heimatschutzbrigaden had the "Jäger" ATN and the ones in the Regiments had the "Sicherungssoldat" ATN) and were not trained nor employed as true Jäger. These regiments only had three battalions and a towed mortar company and relied on Civilian transports. As such they were more comparable to the Heimatschutzkompanien and the Sicherungskompanien and were in no way able to do full combat missions besides limited security and/or observation. Units of the Heimatschutzbrigaden and Heimatschutzregimenter also differed in equipment and organization.
To truly underline this difference i decided to make a new line of infantry units called "Heimatschützer" (Which are described further below) and the TerrKdo-Jäger, which will feature in future divisions and my proposal for a flavoaccuracy rework of the TerrKdo Süd.
Excerpt from a STAN of a Jägergruppe and Zugtrupp of a Jägerkompanie B3. Note that Jäger units could vary widely in equipment and that this STAN is only applicable to the units that used the B3 STAN.
So, now that we got all of this out of the way, what actually is the Sperrverband?
As the VTK 42 would be too "anemic" for a full division i added the relatively available US brigade to create a "blocking/barrier" force that could defend the WeseAller river crossings.
In real life these were very important, these units were in part responsible for such a job and are all "available" and combined with the role of the VTK to lead ad-hoc created divisional size forces this gives us an ideal option for such a division.
"Lore"-wise this division could have been created in Eugen's alternative history as a quick reaction to the events of the Kitzingen (Were US and territorial German forces worked together) and Kassel airdrops.
All together i think this is a plausible force and could be a funky division, representing parts of the German forces that otherwise could/would not be portrayed (As the Kampftruppenschule).
Now for the units:

Logistics:

Like in the 12. PzDiv the logistics tab should be split between US and German forces, with some German one being partly replaced by US ones (MAN KAT by HEMTT, or one card of M113A1 Mun. by its US equivalent). The main difference to the logistics tab of the 12. PzDiv is that the German units are mostly unarmored, from rear area units and the American ones are from an armored brigade.

Infantry:

One of the stronger tabs of the Sperrverband, the infantry is made up of limited replacement and rear area units, a small amount of US infantry and troops from the Bremen based. Heimatschutzregiment 72 and several Heimatschutzkompanien stationed in Verden.
Since the Jäger units in the Heimatschutzregimenter were no “true” Jäger, I decided to “lump them in” with the Heimatschutzkompanien, which had similar training and equipment. This differentiates these types of units as they have been historically and allows us to diversify these units (With a possible trait I am thinking about or only through flavor).
I also renamed the “Heimatschützen” to Heimatschützer, which is way more correct. No matter what kind of units the Heimatschützen are representing, in any case “Heimatschutz” means home defense, while “Schützen” means riflemen, which is a term that was only used in the East German and pre-45 German militaries. Heimatschützer (Home defenders/Home protectors) is a more correct term and represents their role better.
It would be a possible flavor addition to give a “civilian” Transport vehicle to the Heimatschützen, as it was planned to use such per “Bundesleistungsgesetz” (see BLG §1.2). A good option for that would be a civilian Daimler-Benz 1017 as mentioned in the logistics tab. The military variant of the 1017 could also be a medium option between the light Unimog and the heavy MAN KAT 1.
Note that I am still working on getting the original/primary sources (STAN and AnwFE) for squad sizes, company structures. Until then I will go with the ahistorical sizes in the base game. This will be changed when I have a good portion of original/primary sources, as I don’t want to rely on certain secondary sources/hearsay.
Instler is a colloquial term of the Bundeswehr for members of the “Instandsetzung” (Maintenance) and represent the maintenance crews of the Kampftruppenschule, which are pressed into combat. In the German military every member has at least basic infantry training and can participate in basic infantry combat, anti-tank work etc. This unique variant of the Instler has no AT weapons, due to it not being part of a field unit, but a school.
The Objektschützer are representing the security details of the Kampftruppenschule and are equipped with the G41, which was considered for arming rear area troops before ’89, due to the G11 not being sufficiently simple enough for reservists and the G41 being able to use US STANAG magazines. The non-adoption of the G11 prevented this and the Bundeswehr went with an entirely new rifle, later called "G36".
Wallmeister are a special branch of the Pioniertruppe, specialized in destruction of infrastructure and the creation of barriers. Since ingame any kind of prepared or field defenses are ahistorically missing I will use “Wallmeister” as a kind of elite-Pioniere (As they are more competent in destruction work, creating barriers etc.), to get them representation. This is not the most accurate thing, but Wallmeister were an important part of the West German military and doctrine, so it is nice to see them represented.

Heimatschützer Füh. a 4-man reservist command team, equipped with G3s and a CarlG
Heimatschützer, an 11-man reservist squad, equipped with G3s, 1 MG3 and 2 G3A3ZF
Heimatschützer (PzF), an 11-man reservist squad, equipped with G3s, 1 MG3 and 1 CarlG
HSch PzVernTrp, a 5-man reservist anti-tank team, using G3s and two slots of Carl G
Instler (KpfTrS), a 6-man reserve squad, equipped with 2 Uzi and G3s. They also could receive a new infantry model, based on the blue work overalls of the Bundeswehr.
Objektschützer, a 11-man security squad, equipped with 2 MP5, 2 G41ZF (G41 with scope) and G41s.
Feldjäger
HSch-Sicherungsoldaten, an 11-man reservist security squad, equipped with G3s
Reserve-Pioniere
Wallmeister, a 6-man engineer squad. They should be equipped with MP5s and satchel charges. They should have higher veterancy than regular Pioniere but not have the shock trait.
HSch MG-3 7,62mm, an MG-3 version with the reservist trait
HSch M40A1, an M40A1 version with the reservist trait

Fire Team Ldr.
Fire Team (LAW)

TOW-2

German units (Except the Instler and Wallmeister) should have access to Unimogs and Iltis only. The Instler should have access to the Marder 1A1A2 with a rear MG turret and to the Unimog. The Wallmeister should have access to the VW T3, which was used by them. All US forces use M2A1 Bradleys and M113s.

Artillery:

The artillery tab of the Sperrverband is one of its weakpoints, as it has no access to organic German artillery besides the towed mortars of the Heimatschutzregiment. The only non-mortar artillery comes from the US forward deployed Brigade in Garlstedt.

Mrs. 120mm Tampella

M106A2 Mortar
M125 Mortar
M109A2

Tanks:

This is the Sperrverband’s strongest tab. The Division receives a full US armor brigade, experienced crews from the Kampftruppenschule 2 in Munster and even support from the Heimatschutzregiment 72
The Kampftruppenschule vehicles are crewed by expert personell of the school but lack ammunition and are quite outdated. This can be represented by giving them less AP value and possibly a lower ammunition count.

Leopard 2A2 (KpfTrS), a higher veterancy version of the Leopard 2A2 (Should have similar stats to the 2A1/A3).
Leopard 1A1A1 (KpfTrS), a higher veterancy version of the Leopard 1A1A1.
Marder 1A1A2 (KpfTrS), due to the lack of Panzergrenadiere in the Munster school, a small amount Marders are used without dismounts, as fire support vehicles. These should have a veterancy bonus and a Milan launcher.
Kanonenjagdpanzer

M1A1 (Including Command Version)
M901 ITV

Recon:

The recon tab is rather unconventional for a German division and includes no recon heli and no radar carrier.
The Objektstreife represents the patrols around the Kampftruppenschule and is equipped with the G41, which was considered for arming rear area troops before ’89, due to the G11 not being sufficiently simple enough for reservists and the G41 being able to use US STANAG magazines.
The HSch Spähtrupp is representing detached infantry scout teams that are employed by Heimatschutzkompanien, Sicherungskompanien and Jägerkompanien (Regimental) of the territorial army.

Objektstreife, a 4-man recon team. They should receive one MP5, two G41 and one G41ZF (G41 with scope).
HSch Spähtrupp, a 4-man reservist-recon team, equipped with an Uzi and G3s.
HSch Zielfernrohrschütze, a two-man recon-sniper team, using a G3A3ZF and a G3, or two G3A3ZF.
Streifenwagen Iltis, an MG3-armed recon variant of the Iltis, as transport for the Objektstreife.

AA:

The AA tab of the Sperrverband is really limited, with some support of local AA units and US Stingers.
Fliegerfaust
Bofors
FK-20-2 20mm Zwillinge
I-Hawk

Stinger

Heli:

The helicopter tab is the weakest, with having nearly no options except very limited British helicopter support.

Air:

The Air tab is made up of mostly obsolete planes and some British planes, due to its rear area focus.
Tornado F.3 (AA)
Alpha Jet A (HE)
Alpha Jet A (CLU)
Alpha Jet A (NPLM)
NF-5 (HE), a Dutch F-5, using Mk.81 bombs
NF-5 (HE2), a Dutch F-5, using Mk.82 bombs
NF-5 (CLU), a Dutch F-5, using Mk.20 Rockeye bombs
The next divisions will be, like last time, decided per "public vote". Just write into the comment which one of these you would like to see next:
Territorialkommando Schleswig-Holstein
6. Panzergrenadierdivision
Verfügungstruppenkommando 41 / "Kampfgruppe Nord"
As in the last case we have two "historical" Division and one ad-hoc created task force based on real units, war plans and actual NATO excercises.

The anatomy of accuracy with the greatest rifle design on earth. Hail Garand, fuck you Stoner!
Some of you goonies were asking for a breakdown of this rifle build. This is the pinnacle of precision rifle design on Garand’s superb rifle platform. It is inspired by the M25 Sniper Weapon System. This is an M1A built to National Match specifications in an M3A stock and with a Trijicon Tenmile 3-18x44 scope.
This started as a “Golden Age” M1A from 1990. These are regarded as having the best receivers, hand finished and with tight tolerances. These rifles were usually built exclusively with USGI parts.
This receiver is built with a new Criterion 1x10 medium weight National Match specification barrel that is hand lapped. Note that the barrel is NM marked. The TRW bolt was then precision aligned to the bore axis and hand lapped. The bolt, barrel, and receiver were then parkerized together.
The barrel wears a National Match modified flash hider, bored and taper reamed so the expanding gasses do not interfere with the bullet. The rifle has National Match sights that adjust to 1/2 MOA. The gas tube and hand guard retainer are welded together for increased rigidity between the barrel and the stock. The gas tube is precision fit to the barrel for optimum gas lock torque for optimal harmonics. The gas piston is precision ground to National Match specifications and TiN coated for reduced friction and better harmonics. The main spring guide rod is made from drill rod to keep the main spring from kinking for more consistent bolt lock up.
The trigger group is made by HRA and has been modified to National Match specifications with oversized brass pins and has been stoned for a two stage glass like break at 4.75 pounds.
The hand guard is trimmed per National Match specifications to not contact the stock or receiver, and it has a piece of neoprene epoxied in the clip location to keep the hand guard off the barrel and to eliminate rattling. These modifications eliminate stresses in the barrel from the hand guard binding on the stock or receiver, and allow for better harmonics. It was then painted OD green in the outside and with high temp aluminized paint on the inside to match original manufacturer requirements.
The stock is a sturdy McMillan M3A finished in woodland camo. This is a heavy fiberglass stock with good rigidity which allows for good accuracy. The front ferrule was opened up to National Match dimensions to allow for clearance between the stock and the gas tube. The stock was routed out along the receiver and trigger group footprints and then bedded together with Marine Tex Grey in the locations called out by the National Match standards. The bedding was then meticulously hand fitted to the working components of the rifle to balance rigidity and clearance. Barrel pre load was set for the stock ferrule contact by fitting a fulcrum block. Bedding the stock increases stability between the receiver and the stock for no practically measurable movement to exist. The only contact to the rifle ahead of the receiver is at the stock ferrule.
A Smith Enterprise NSN and US property marked picatinny rail is fitted to the receiver and aligned to the bore axis. This holds a Trijicon Tenmile 3-18x44 mil rad illuminated reticle scope. The scope is set in a Trijicon 20 MOA mount. This scope is lightweight and has fantastic optical clarity for scopes in the under $2,000 price range. The rifle also has a folding level and a Harris bipod.
This rifle should be able to produce sub-MOA groups, but we will see when it is tested soon. These are finicky rifles so some tuning may be needed. The primary ammunition to be used will be M118LR. This rifle should be capable out to 1,000 yards for two legged game. With a future red dot and Vickers sling, the rifle should be workable at room clearing distances too.
Ultimately this rifle cost $6,500 in parts and took 60 hours of my time to build. I must admit my throbbing erection whenever I look at it has been a little hard to handle. I will keep you guys updated after a range test.

Hello, fellow modders!
As the title states, my FO4 crashes to desktop after a few minutes of gameplay and I don't know why. I didn't have this problem before. It just randomly started happening... I did however have loot reorganize my load order, but I am clueless about loadorders...
