RESEARCH SUGGESTS LEADERS’ SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS ARE TAKEN JUST AS SERIOUSLY AS FORMAL STATEMENTS

Over 180 world leaders maintain social media accounts, and some of them issue policy warnings to rivals and the public on these platforms rather than relying on traditional government statements. How seriously do people take such social media postings? A new study suggests the general public and policymakers alike take leaders’ social media posts just as seriously as they take formal government statements. The research, by MIT political scientists, deploys novel surveys of both the public and experienced foreign policy specialists. “What we find, which is really surprising, across both

SCALE OF ONLINE HARM TO CHILDREN REVEALED IN GLOBAL STUDY

More than 300 million children a year are victims of online sexual exploitation and abuse, research indicates. Pupils in every classroom, in every school, in every country are victims of this hidden pandemic, according to researchers who have conducted the first global estimate of the scale of the crisis. The statistics, from the Childlight Global Child Safety Institute at the University of Edinburgh, amount to a clear and present danger to the world’s children, according to the crime agency Interpol. Online risks One in eight of the world’s children, about

PRONATALISM IS THE LATEST SILICON VALLEY TREND. WHAT IS IT—AND WHY IS IT DISTURBING?

For Malcolm and Simone Collins, declining birth rates across many developed countries are an existential threat. The solution is to have “tons of kids,” and to use a hyperrational, data-driven approach to guide everything from genetic selection to baby names and day-to-day parenting. They don’t heat their Pennsylvania home in winter, because heating is a “pointless indulgence.” Their children wear iPads around their necks. And a Guardian journalist witnessed Malcolm strike their two-year-old across the face for misbehavior, a parenting style they apparently developed based on watching “tigers

HOW SCIENCE, MATH, AND TECH CAN PROPEL SWIMMERS TO NEW HEIGHTS

One hundred years ago, in the 1924 Paris Olympics, American Johnny Weissmuller won the men’s 100m freestyle with a time of 59 seconds. Nearly 100 years later, in the most recent Olympics, the delayed 2020 Games in Tokyo, Caeleb Dressel took home the same event with a time that was 12 seconds faster than Weissmuller’s. Swimming times across the board have become much faster over the past century, a result of several factors, including innovations

BANNING SEX CRIME OFFENDERS FROM CHANGING THEIR NAMES DOESN’T MAKE US SAFER

The government of British Columbia recently introduced a bill to ban people convicted of serious offenses from legally changing their name. The proposed amendment to the province’s Name Act would also prohibit those found not criminally responsible due to mental disorder from changing their name. The government announced the move after media reports that Allan Schoenborn legally changed his name to Ken Johnson. Schoenborn was found not criminally responsible for the deaths of his children in 2010 because of a delusional disorder, and was placed at a psychiatric hospital.

SILICON VALLEY ISN’T THE START-UP UTOPIA WE THOUGHT, RESEARCH FINDS

Silicon Valley—considered the world’s hub of technology and innovation—can breed inequality and sameness among budding entrepreneurs, according to new research. Behind the multi-million-dollar deals and tales of start-up utopia, Silicon Valley’s “uneven” investment landscape is in fact a barrier to many budding businesses, says the study from the University of Stirling and Georg-August-University Göttingen. But the researchers suggest other countries could still learn from the more discerning entrepreneurial ecosystem that bred giants such as Apple and Google, to be more selective in backing start-ups. While it is not uncommon for

I WANT TO KEEP MY CHILD SAFE FROM ABUSE—BUT RESEARCH TELLS ME I’M DOING IT WRONG

Child sexual abuse is uncomfortable to think about, much less talk about. The idea of an adult engaging in sexual behaviors with a child feels sickening. It’s easiest to believe that it rarely happens, and when it does, that it’s only to children whose parents aren’t protecting them. This belief stayed with me during my early days as a parent. I kept an eye out for creepy men at the playground and was skeptical of men who worked with young children, such as teachers and coaches. When my kids were

CYBERFLASHING IS A FORM OF GENDERED SEXUAL VIOLENCE THAT MUST BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

Sexting—sending sexually suggestive or explicit messages and images—is now a widespread practice, and can be a healthy way to express and explore sexuality. However, there is a need to distinguish between consensual sexting and forms of sexual harassment like cyberflashing. Cyberflashing refers to the act of non-consensually sending sexual imagery (like nudes or “dick pics”) to another person. It is facilitated through communications technologies including text, AirDrop and social media applications like Snapchat and Tinder. Similar to flashing—when a person unexpectedly and deliberately “flashes” their genitals to others—that occurs in

2024.06.02 03:33 Minute_Fig2034 AITAH For asking people to donate to volunteer students?

I live in what I feel is a richie-rich, snobbish district. I am not rich, I am a "lowly" school bus driver that goes out of their way to help and support whoever needs it.
My kids' elementary school has many annual events, and the PTO very aggressively (IMO) asks for monetary, time, and item donations (and TBH I have no idea what they do with the money). I have always donated items, time and money for years,.even though my family is certainly one of the poorest amongst all the others. Let me also add that even though I am white, I am from another country and have an accent that identifies me as a foreigner right away, however, I AM an American citizen.
This past week my kids' school held an annual carnival event and I donated over $70 worth of homemade, baked goods, plus I volunteered for hours AND had my son volunteer as well as they were short. I was manning the concession stand. The set up was like this: I would take the meal tickets, take the person's order, and then a high school student volunteer, would run and gather the items ordered. It was mayhem and we were working under the hot sun with no shade, no break, not even water.
Those poor kids were run rugged. They were "asked" by the school to volunteer in exchange for volunteer credit or smt like that. After an hour or so of relentless running around, they were hungry and thirsty and tired. I had bought a couple of meal tickets and I gave them to the students and asked them to pick something to eat and drink on me, but I didn't have enough for all of them.
As the event was winding to an end, we had some people who just didn't really want to use their whole ticket, and after I reminded them again that we will be closing in a few minutes and the tickets would go to waste and confirming they didn't want anything else, I asked them if they would like to donate their remaining unused punches to the volunteers students. I kinda made it a joke by saying something like "would you like to donate what you didn't use to feed these hungry students over here?"
People were like "oh sure!" And soon each of the kiddos had a drink and a snack. As we were closing, a PTO member approaches me and says they have had a "lot of complaints" that I was forcing people to donate to "hungry children" and that one lady was shorted a hot dog and then "forced" to donate her ticket. It was not true. I remembered the lady, who kept changing her mind and having the kids run back and forth again and again. I did punch 4 hot dogs for her but I guess in all the running around, she was one got dog short... however, she said nothing to me and I didn't catch it. This left a bitter taste in my mouth
By the end of the event, we had over 50 pizzas left. I asked if the students could take one home and I was told kinda rudely that no, these will be given to the workers taking down the tents (the workers were actually being paid real money btw, they were not volunteers).
Their (the PTO people) body language and attitude, made me feel like they were looking down on me and the students too, as they walked away with the boxes of pizzas. I just took my kids and left and I swear, I am never doing anything for the PTO ever again. I have donated for years and didn't even get a thank you.
Now however, I wonder if I was TAH for asking people if they would like to donate their unwanted punches instead of throwing the ticket away? I don't regret it. Those kids had a snack and a drink and I was the only one who stood up for them. It is not the first time I have gotten in "trouble" for standing up for students who are marginalized (like the students in the autism program). I am completing a dual BA in Education next month and I have been already accepted into a Masters program for SpEd and had dreams of being a teacher in this district but after yesterday, I am disgusted by them and will not be applying. I will instead apply to a neighboring "black and Latino" district as they call it (don't get me started) and give my love, time and energy to those students instead.
Was I TA for asking people to donate their unused, unwanted punches to my volunteer students?

2024.06.02 02:39 Salty_Bid2335 Neurodiverse Family Looking for Recs

Hi! I’m wondering if any neurodiverse families have found particular neighborhoods/communities within (or near) the city that are understanding of the specific challenges that our families tend to face? Our family has been pretty traumatized (which is an understatement) over the years due to lack of compassion and understanding, as well as stigmas. My son is a rising neurodivergent 3rd grader and has internalized the shame and stress of being “different” because of how he’s been treated by the parent and student community at his current school. We are looking for a new area to give us all a fresh start and hopefully find a more accepting community. I’m sure there is no perfect community anywhere but I wanted to hear if anyone had any positive reports on areas or elementary schools that they could share with us!!
TLDR: Neurodivergent family looking for an accepting community and school to belong. Thank you!

2024.06.02 02:13 SKW1594 Going back and forth…help me please!

Ok…are there any public elementary school teachers who love their job? I can’t decide if j want to take the plunge into this or not. Student teaching destroyed my passion for education. I’m subbing right now because my energy is depleted. I have a master’s in K-6. Every time I sub I am completely overstimulated.
I was working as an instructional aide in kindergarten prior to student teaching and I absolutely loved it. It was just a really great situation. Being an aide is not always the best either.
Basically, I thought my whole life’s purpose was to be a teacher and now I kind of just want to live a low key/less stressful life. Teaching isn’t really a part of that. I have dystonia which slows me down in addition to anxiety and bipolar disorder. I’m stable but I have triggers every single day. It’s just getting to be a lot.
My main concern is making a decent living. Subbing only gives me 30-40K depending. Being an aide is even less. Teaching would give me financial independence.
If anyone can share their experience or any insight, I would appreciate it! Thanks!

2024.06.02 00:36 _Loyaldog_ Happy pride month!

Happy pride month!
This was the sign I made for a counter-protest in my area. There’s been a lady holding up anti-LGBT+ signs in front of an elementary school, accusing the faculty of “transing kids” and indoctrinating them into being LGBT+.
I probably don’t need to clarify for this subreddit, but—my mother works in the school district, as did I for a bit (I wasn’t super important, I just led a child-friendly lunchtime D&D club for some of the kids.) We’re trying to provide a welcoming place where students of all identities can feel accepted and focus on learning, but I couldn’t even “indoctrinate” them into not stealing from every NPC they came across. I have no idea how I was supposed to convert them all to Gay.
A lot of people were pissed at this lady, probably because the signs were making trans/enby kids cry whenever they had to be driven past them, so there was a counter-protest organized. A bunch of people showed up, holding their own signs about how all kids were welcome in our school district. This one was mine!

La Signora is almost fully themed after one of the most powerful Aztec godesses, and the implications of the fact (analysis and story)
This isn't even a theory, this is a post basically explaining what the goddess is exactly about, and possible narratives this could lead to. I hope that this will somehow become a more popular fact since Hyv literally used Itzpāpālōtl's animal symbol in Signora's concept art.
Sources: Wikipedia and Mythlok
I'll place the TL;DR first since this is a very long read:
La Signora is heavily, dare I say fully, based on Itzpāpālōtl, the goddess of death, rebirth and fire in symbolism, role and powers. Itzpāpālōtl is the patron goddess of witches and the commander of an immortal army, which would easily make Signora rank 1 or 2 of the harbingers if she stays one.
Notes:
She won't be a 1 to 1 Itzpāpālōtl copy, neither am I saying that, that would make her one of the most powerful characters in the lore. I do think she will have most of Itzpāpālōtl's powers if Hyv commits to their set up.
Since we're talking about Aztec mythology this will contain mildly disturbing topics
Itzpāpālōtl is the Aztec godesses of mainly death and rebirth, though she has dominion over many different things. Other notable things she has dominion over are: the demonic army of tzitzimitl soldiers (star adjacent undead monsters), fire, witchcraft, a realm of existence that is both the underworld for babies and the birthplace of mankind.
While Signora isn't related to all of these she does very much have power over fire and is implied to have death powers (instant disintegration is a crazy feat no matter how strong the fire is), and we know that she is classified as a witch, as much as she hates being called one. Itzpāpālōtl doesn't have any noted ice powers, though given how versatile she is she might have them. Though she is usually called the obsidian butterfly, and obsidian is rapidly cooled down lava, which gives her the ice connection.
As far as we know Signora doesn't have an underworld or army of demons, though these are both powers that may be introduced after her resurrection. Another power she does possibly share with the goddess is the consumption of souls: though it's not blatantly stated it is very likely that her disintegration of monsters causes her to fuel her fire even more using the souls of monsters, so her soul may not be disintegrated itself.
I will now make the argument for the army of demons very much being a thing that will be real if this is the angle hyv is going for. We know that the Tsaritsa's mission for La Signora was for her to burn down the old world just in case, possibly leaving herself behind, but the thing is she just couldn't do that. As powerful as the prime crimson witch is this just couldn't happen, she's only one person, but if she had a, say, army of liquid fire undead monsters, she could easily complete this job, maybe not even sacrificing herself.
Another thing that must be mentioned, just in case someone tries to call bs, is that Itzpāpālōtl is mainly a melle fighter. While this is true she is also very much a witch and a shaman, and Hyv is clearly not taking 100% of Itzpāpālōtl's powers and attributes, more like 80%.
Last but not least two more powers that both of them have, though with different flavour, are an insane regeneration factor and shapeshifting. While Itzpāpālōtl has the most basic version of these abilities La Signora's regeneration factor manifests in the form of her moths being her extensions, thus making her easy to regenerate, and the shapeshifting more so manifests as Signora being able to become sentient fire and smoke, as seen in her bossfight.
Now that I covered all of the similarities I can currently find, I've also written a possibly narrative for Signora's resurrection based mostly on what is known about Itzpāpālōtl:
In ancient Natlan, when the primordial one only settled on Teyvat and created mankind, the god and her creations were quickly faced with a primordial threat native to the planet: an all consuming force, Itzpāpālōtl, commonly called The Crimson Witch of Flames, the source of the term witch on Teyvat. This force, even with its seemingly average draconic host, proved itself to be as much of a threat as the sovereigns who were just barely taken care of by the gods.
After the crimson witch of flames "died", the gods took her moment of weakness as an opportunity to separate the spirit from her source of power, thus creating the sea of liquid flame buried under the volcanoes of Teyvat. As much as she tried rebelling and gaining access to the sea of liquid flame, even managing to create a new species of demons as a last desperate attempt at any army, the gods managed to drive her out of Natlan before she could become a threat yet again.
Now, being punished and heavily weakened herself, with very little liquid fire remaining in her system, the spirit managed to find its resting place in Sumeru, assuming that this will be her resting place as she turns into embers of her former self. Yet again would the crimson witch find herself disturbed by the researchers of the akademiya, this was her hope to consume enough souls and regain some strength, though she only ended up as a "strange chemical" to be experimented with and studied.
By this time the spirit lost all of her hope, falling from divine grace to a barely sentient being, her unsuspecting savior ended up being the maiden Rosalyne, student of the akademiya and recently turned widow. In her grief and desperation Rosalyne managed to take a sample of liquid fire from the akademiya, drinking it and gaining the dying power of the crimson witch.
Even with what little power the spirit managed to conserve, Rosalyne gained the strength to avenge her lover, killing all monsters in her line of sight for too long to recall. The maiden's rage towards all monsters of this world and the spirit's hunger for souls of any kind resulted in perfect symbiosis, the only flaw to this connection being the maiden's mortality.
In her dying moments Rosalyne was offered a saving grace in the name of The Tsaritsa, her life being barely saved from the all consuming flames of the crimson witch. So the maiden spent hundreds of years working for her new goddess with unshakable loyalty and determination, the hundreds of years two weakened souls spent in one dying body creating a single new one, fueled by the flaming passion of both parties involved.
In the end, the now dubbed La Signora, died at the hands of the electro archon, or at least the charred body finally did. Now freed, the merged soul has only one goal in mind: reach the ancient sea of liquid fire.

2024.06.01 23:09 EyeBest What to do

Hey everyone, first time sub who started back in February. I’m a roving sub and love my position since I get to see all the kids in different grades at my elementary. All of the staff in the school are great and super friendly. Although the principal is questionable. There are a good amount of kids with tough behaviors at the school but there are also a lot of great kids. I notice it’s a lot of kids in the lower grades and that could be due to Covid which I was told by another teacher.
One kid in particular who has had some of the worst behaviors there, has been displaying red flags the moment I started working there. He likes to google inappropriate words on his Chromebook when doing the learning programs in class, he ignores adults and keeps talking to another kid and a lot of times it’s about something inappropriate like weapons like guns and bombs (mainly due to bringing up family members who were in the military but I believe he also watches in appropriate YouTube videos), barely has consequences being done in order to learn from mistakes, he’s even called kids using the n word which he knew exactly what he was saying. So many other things. Parents don’t do much, and seem to like to blame the school.🙄
The other day I was subbing his class for an hour. He wasn’t doing his work and got up from his seat. When I told him to work on his worksheet he said “no I don’t care, I’ll go with the FBI and shoot you.” These kind of threats are a major red flag to me. With all the inappropriate things he says and to say that to me makes me uncomfortable. I’ve heard of other teachers saying he makes them feel uncomfortable as well. I called for assistance when he told me that so the school psychologist took him out for a talk. He came back right before his teacher came back. I’m just flabbergasted nothing much is done besides a talk with the student. I ended up making a report to the principal but I never got talked to. What else can I do? I feel for the kids who have to witness these behaviors and not get the attention they need. Instead this kid is always having issues, distracting the whole class. It’s also a danger to others around him. This is why I believe school shootings happen. Not enough help or recognition of this behavior is met so then bad things happen.
Would appreciate any advice on how to be helpful in this situation.

2024.06.01 19:37 realistheway Stomach issuessss

Asking here because the other subs can be brutal.
May 22nd volunteered last day of elementary school. Lots of adorable, gross kids, sanitized as much as I could.
May 24th went camping for 4 days. Did not intentionally drink any sketchy water or eat sketchy food. Everything was properly refrigerated. But hey, nature finds a way...
May 27th developed pretty severe watery diarrhea. Talking anything that entered my body was immediately evacuated through the rear end in water form every 45min. Next couple of days started violently vomiting with the diarrhea. Vomiting stopped Thursday.
May 31st went to ER bc I had not peed in a few days and knew dehydration was happening. Had lots of tests done, CAT scan, full blood planel, tested my stool. All normal other than small signs of dehydration which they did do some IV fluids. CAT scan did not show any signs of blockages etc.
Today, June 1st. I am still suffering from anything going in is coming right back out. 95% in liquid, watery form. I am allowed to take anti-diarrheals now since they ruled out parasites. I've been following the BRAT diet as much as possible but don't have much of an appetite. Pushing lots of electrolyte fluids as well. Taking Zofran and some other "belly bubble" rx from doc.
Could I just be going through a crazy bug? The stool sample was negative for all the normal noro/etc infections/viruses/black plague. Could it have been a parasite but I've passed it and now just dealing with the aftermath?
I know yall aren't medical professionals so I'm just looking for anyone who may have gone through this and to tell me that sometimes a bug like this lasts over a week and this too shall pass. But in my 40 years, ive never had watery bowls over a day or 2.
I have a followup with my GP to go over everything but there isn't much to look at as there were no red or even orange flags. I haven't changed or started any new meds.
Honestly I was hoping it was a parasite bc it would explain things. Others in my household don't seem to be sick... yet....
I'm just suffering. I'm so tired and sore from the non stop purging out my ass 24/7 and the anti diarrhea doesn't seem to be working all the way, although I guess things have "slowed down" I cant leave my house bc no gassy feeling can be trusted that its "just gas"....
It just seemed to hit so hard and fast it's hard for me to believe I've developed a stomach condition but who knows. ER docs didn't have much to say on it.

2024.06.01 19:28 ScienceStyled Microbe Madness: The Marvelous Microbial Mayhem Inside Your Munch Factory

Ladies, gentlemen, and binge-watchers of "The Office" on their 27th rerun, buckle up because we're about to dive headfirst into the microbial mosh pit that is the human microbiome. Think of your body as a bustling city—let's call it "Gutropolis"—where the citizens are not humans but trillions of microbes. Yes, you heard that right, folks. Your gut is basically the New York City of Bacteria, complete with its own microbial Broadway and an internal Central Park filled with probiotics jogging along the digestive pathways.
Picture this: your body is a colossal concert venue, and the headlining act is a band of bacteria jamming on the health and disease spectrum. These microbial rock stars are everywhere—on your skin, in your gut, even in places you'd rather not mention at family dinners. They're like that one friend who shows up at every party uninvited but ends up being the life of the event. They're weird, they're wild, and they're absolutely vital to keeping you alive. Let's break it down faster than a TikTok dance challenge.
First off, meet your gut flora. No, that's not a character from "Game of Thrones"—though it would be pretty rad if it were. The gut flora is a posse of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that are so integral to your digestive system that without them, you'd be as clueless as a GPS with no signal in a rural area. These tiny terrors are responsible for breaking down the food you shove into your pie hole, turning it into the nutrients you need to keep scrolling through memes at 3 AM.
Imagine your stomach as a food processor and your gut microbes as the energetic blades, chopping and dicing nutrients into manageable pieces. It's like that scene from "Edward Scissorhands," but instead of topiaries, these guys are crafting vitamins and amino acids. And just like Edward, they're a bit misunderstood. People hear "bacteria" and think of germs and illness, but these microbes are more like the unsung heroes of a Marvel movie—crucial to the plot and downright essential for the happy ending.
Speaking of superheroes, let's not forget about the immune system. The microbiome is like the Justice League for your body, but instead of Batman and Wonder Woman, you've got Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus. These tiny titans train your immune cells, teaching them to distinguish between the good, the bad, and the ugly. They’re the body’s own personal Avengers, assembling to kick the butts of any pathogens daring to invade their territory.
Now, let’s talk brain. Yes, your microbiome has the power to mess with your mind. It’s like an invisible puppeteer pulling the strings of your emotions and thoughts. Scientists call this the "gut-brain axis," but I prefer to think of it as the "Mind-Gut Express," a direct line connecting your feelings to your feces. Ever wonder why you get butterflies in your stomach before a big presentation? That’s your microbiome, throwing a pre-game party and messing with your nerves. It's like the microbes are all riding a rollercoaster, and you're stuck feeling every twist and turn.
And if you think the brain-gut connection is wild, wait until you hear about the gut-skin axis. Imagine your skin as the red carpet of a microbial fashion show, with bacteria strutting their stuff and influencing everything from acne to aging. Forget expensive creams; the secret to flawless skin might just be a healthier gut microbiome. It’s like your gut flora is a backstage beauty squad, working tirelessly to keep you looking fabulous. They’re the unsung heroes of the skincare world, armed not with makeup brushes but with metabolic processes that keep your skin glowing like a Kardashian at a selfie convention.
Alright, let's get into the nitty-gritty. You want applications? We've got applications hotter than a trending hashtag. The gut microbiome is a goldmine for personalized medicine. Imagine a future where doctors analyze your gut flora and tailor treatments just for you. It's like having a personal health concierge who knows you better than your Netflix algorithm. You’ll walk into a clinic, provide a stool sample (a.k.a. “microbial magic potion”), and walk out with a diet and treatment plan customized to your microbial makeup. It’s like having the Bat-Signal, but instead of calling Batman, it’s calling the right probiotics to save the day.
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: mental health. Yep, your gut bugs are playing therapist, influencing your mood and mental well-being. These microbes produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, which is basically the happiness hormone. Your gut is a veritable Prozac factory, cranking out good vibes faster than a viral cat video. So next time you’re feeling down, skip the self-help books and reach for some yogurt. Your gut flora will thank you.
But it's not all fun and games. An imbalance in your microbiome can lead to a host of issues, from irritable bowel syndrome to anxiety and depression. It's like having a band where the drummer decides to go solo and the whole gig falls apart. Dysbiosis, the scientific term for this microbial mayhem, can wreak havoc faster than spoilers for the latest superhero movie. Keeping your microbiome balanced is as crucial as maintaining your Wi-Fi connection during a Zoom meeting—lose it, and everything goes haywire.
Alright, time to bring it home with a bit of human-related science education. Understanding the microbiome isn't just for nerds in lab coats. It's for anyone with a body, which, last time I checked, includes everyone. Schools should be teaching this stuff alongside the Pythagorean theorem. Imagine a class where instead of dissecting frogs, students learn to decode their own microbial makeup. It’s like the ultimate science-meets-self-care lesson, where biology gets personal.
In conclusion, your microbiome is the ultimate tag-team champion of your body, a microscopic WWE match happening in your gut every day. From digestion to mental health, these microbial maestros are orchestrating a symphony of bodily functions, even if we don’t always hear the music. So next time you munch on a burger or down a kombucha, remember the tiny tenants of Gutropolis working round the clock to keep you going. They're the real MVPs in the game of life, the unsung heroes of human-related science education, and the wacky, wonderful inhabitants of the ecosystem within us.
Now go forth, and may your microbes be ever in your favor!

Destroyer-Chan Sample Character Dissection: What can you do at level 1?
Fantrans Terminology will be used, apologies to anyone using official.
https://preview.redd.it/s7n1h9usv04d1.jpg?width=303&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4322fecd6676294a6404f0c893788c3d9b5afcd4
Characters at level 1 aren't terribly complex, but the sample characters were made with a very different mindset than later level play as soon as level 3 or 5, and sometimes with major build problems left unaddressed. So today we'll look at Destroyer-Chan here and see what they did right and wrong, within the stipulations of the build as of the core book. No changing styles, main style, or race for example.
The components for Destroyer-chan are Martial Scion, Arc slayer A, and Arc slayer B. Scion is something of a jack of all trades Race with a focus on offense and check success, and Arc slayer A and B are focused on dealing damage either directly with Secrets of the Destroyer or via countering after using Blade Flash. Their Cover will usually be a "Student" of one kind or another, though this doesn't have a lot of impact. For Talent choices, not including the automatic talents Secrets of the Destroyer and Blade Flash, They took Violent Strike, Ancient Memories, Rending Gale Arts, and Protective Teachings.
With these components in mind where did Destroyer-Chan go wrong? The problem lies in the choice of talents, more specifically the style talents. Violent Strike and Ancient Memories help to plug holes in the build by using Odd dice and allowing Destroyer-Chan to beat Main Stat checks she otherwise couldn't, Respectively. Violent Strike also synergizes some with Blade flash, since they take different dice to fuel, allowing you to do more damage than with a basic Weapon Attack. Protective Teachings also puts you in the line of fire more often, allowing you to Blade Flash more reliably. These are what she did right.
Rending Gale Art is the one that doesn't help your build, only eating dice to make you slightly better at what you are already doing. So instead of Rending Gale Art, Epigone Style would help you to more actively use talents by giving you overflow every time you evade. This would drastically help Destroyer-Chans consistency up until she hits level 3 and can get higher tier talents to solve that issue. While it wouldn't help with Blade Flash dodging, you could also take Lingering Glow Art at this level instead of Protective Teachings in order to succeed on Resist checks more reliably, As well as being a second Avenue for disposing of Odd Dice. You would lose an easy way to get rid of non-4 dice though.
In summation, Destroyer-Chan needs a better grasp on dice economy to more reliably spam her powerful attacks, and this is achievable quite easily by simply swapping Rending Gale art for Epigone Style. Without any changes an Odd spirit dice becomes a clog in your resource economy, drastically lowering your effectiveness.
Can you think of anything i missed? Confused on what a talent does? wonder how it would work with expansion talents? Think I'm just stupid and wrong? Want me to do another one of these for a different sample character? Feel free to ask me any questions or leave a comment,

2024.06.01 18:56 Eroe777 I Am Proud of My Daughter!

(This is my first time posting on this sub; if I run afoul of any of the rules, I apologize in advance.)
My elder daughter completed her first year as a teacher yesterday. She teaches First Grade in a Spanish immersion program. In a state that is much closer to Canada than it is to Mexico. She is an American girl, born and bred, of Scandinavian and Germanic stock. NOTHING about her says 'SPANISH!'
She was the only non-Hispanic member of the staff this year (everybody else is Colombian; apparently she is developing a Colombian accent)- it's a growing program; this year was just Kindergarten and First Grade, two classrooms of each. New grades will be added each year through fifth or sixth grade.
Her students were a mixture of kids who speak Spanish at home, and kids who are learning Spanish as they go.
She spent the first half of the year teaching in a converted teachers' lounge in the old high school, which has been converted into the district's community/continuing Ed center, before moving into a brand new classroom in a brand new wing of a nearby elementary school (the building also houses an elementary school and a different foreign language immersion school).
Two completely different sets of administration and specialist teachers commented on how her students were among the most challenging they had ever had to deal with.
She teaches in a wealthy suburb, so entitled parents are a constant danger.
In other words, she taught a bunch of not-very-well behaved rich 6- and 7-year olds with entitled parents, in two different buildings, in a language most of them were learning as they went, in a language SHE didn't grow up speaking.
And she kicked ass!
I am very, very proud of her. (and yes, I did tell her that)
That is all.

2024.06.01 18:29 AgitatedDirection957 30-40% better after 3 months of physiotherapy

After reading the content of this subforum, I was motivated to see what I could achieve by giving up my regular doses of antibiotics and focusing on physical therapy. It turns out this worked quite well so far. Below are the things that helped me especially.
  • Reading “A Headache in the Pelvis”: This described my condition perfectly, and being authored by a graduate student at Stanford under the supervision of a professor of Urology, had enough credibility that I started paying attention. After reading, I started touching my trigger points and noticed that after they were touched, the pain was diminished for a while. This demonstrated to me that I could control the pain, and not just by not doing things that triggered it and made it worse (like masturbation). Feeling in control after 2 years of trying out various antibiotics without success, is a truly amazing feeling.
  • Giving up antibiotics: I wanted to see if there were any bacteria in my urine and semen samples that warranted antibiotics, believing that it’s possible that I could both have pelvis floor dysfunction (muscle issue) and a potential infection (bacterial issue). After a little over a week of being off antibiotics, I did the tests and everything came back negative (no surprise). After years of being on antibiotics, my system is probably nuked of many bacteria. Once I gave these up, the pain flared quite substantially, and I had some of my worst days ever. But it got better over time and now I no longer need to worry about what I’m doing to my body by taking antibiotics, which is a huge psychological relief.
  • Quercetin: I found believable studies (search for Shoshkes and quercetin) that this helps with inflammation (in much the same way that taking antibiotics helped with inflammation and helped me feel better). I take 600mg twice a day, with bromelain. I’ve tried to stop taking it twice, and the pain flares after a few days, so for now, I’m still taking it. Once the pain goes down to zero for a longer period, I hope to stop.
  • My physiotherapist: I was lucky enough to find a therapist specialized in pelvic floor therapy, who had 12 years experience with just this in both men and women. Most of our sessions consisted of 30% talk and 70% dry needling. I think the talk actually helped more than the dry needling (and will test that out now since I’ve moved cities). Specifically, she helped me understand that my pain is in the ligaments in the pelvic muscles, the same ligaments where sperm travels during ejaculation. We believe these ligaments hurt due to bad posture, specifically a weak transveral abdominal muscle whose primary job is to stabilize the body. Due to this bad posture, other muscles compensated to stabilize the body and now ache due to being misused. To fix, we need to strengthen the stabilizing muscle and transform the body to a healthy, natural state of being. I started a training program at the gym where I now dedicate an entire day/week to core strength (mostly calisthenics exercises). She insisted the pelvis is neutral (as opposed to flat on the floor or otherwise supported during these exercises). I’ve realized my core is weaker than average during the yoga classes I’ve taken and believe that specific core exercises at the gym will help. She also explained that I hurt more in cold weather because the muscles tighten more in cold weather. I hurt more when I sit because the muscles are tight and crunched when I sit. Same for being anxious or stressed. The overall takeaway is to return the muscles and ligaments to their normal, strong, and healthy function through regular exercises with maybe some impulse to speed things up (like dry needling).
  • Vegan diet, lower in carbs: I understand this is a contentious topic, but for whatever reason I always have pain flares after eating meat or heavy meals. I feel lighter and better when eating a plant-based diet. However, I’ve noticed that eating lots of grains/carbs leads to agitation so I’ve been trying to eat more nuts/beans and less grains and found that helps settle the mind (and the muscles too). In practice, lots of beans, nuts and vegetables with a little fruit and grains (and nothing processed beyond tofu or hemp protein). This is what works for my pain, I’m not advocating it for everyone or for the health of the planet or animal welfare. Maybe you can try it and it helps you too.
  • Near zero masturbation and only sex, preferably in active positions: Understanding the problem is in the ligaments and the tightness of the overall muscles/ligaments in the groin area, I realized that whenever I masturbate there’s a whole lot more tightness in those muscles. For whatever reason, I end up pulling more and I feel the muscles are tighter during masturbation than during sex. Even during sex, if the girl is on top, the muscles are scrunched together more than if I’m on top or in a position where the body has to move in a natural way (as opposed to collapsing and mostly laying there). This makes a big difference in the pain symptoms, when I’m able to practice it correctly. I actually feel this helped the most out of everything.
After 3 months of gradual improvement, I’ve had periods of one or two days where the pain was barely perceptible. My flares (usually triggered by masturbation) are still bad, but they last less than before. My pain also feels differently, more in the muscle of the leg and less in the groin (in other words, it moved, which my physiotherapist sees as a good sign). I tried doing trigger point release at the beginning but found that it mostly flared my symptoms and have stopped doing it. I have no “daily practice” to manage the pain, beyond taking quercetin . The core workouts, healthy diet and natural sex I would hope to do regardless if I have this pain, and I see things improving. I hope it continues.
I’d like to thank those who posted their experiences, as that was the impetus to make the change in my life. I hope this post helps others make a change in their lives.

2024.06.01 17:45 musicproducer07 Manga idea!

Had an idea that popped up in my mind that I really wanted to make but I suck at drawing lol. This story is inspired by the mangas 'Play It Cool, Guys', 'Koi Ni Mudaguchi', and 'Nijiiro Days'
Boyband Bootcamp Genre(s): Comedy, School Life, Slice Of Life, Romance, Music
Plot: An aspiring singer-songwriter attempts to recruit a few guys to form their own independent boyband in highschool. From there, he teams up with four interesting characters that will decide his fate. From stories about friendship, hard work and love, these boys partner up to try and see what life looks like as an idol.
Band name: Delight
Band members:
Kentaro Matsui: Kentaro is the leader, founder and lead vocalist of Delight at Class 1-D. Considered an all-rounder, he co-writes, co-produces and edits videos for the group. Affectionately called Ken by his bandmates, he is an aspiring singer-songwriter who dreams of forming his own boyband, ultimately making a poster on his school bulletin board to recruit members for the band. He has an ick for record labels as they don't allow creative control, opting to make music independently for himself and his bandmates. He originally wanted to create the band based off of a Western TV show he watched growing up called Big Time Rush, ultimately igniting his passion for boybands and also once hosted his own YouTube channel where he posted covers of popular songs and even released a couple of originals which were co-produced by Moriya. He is oblivious to Miyu's attraction to him. He is the straight-man of the group, ultimately trying to ease the tension between the members and looks for solutions within their problems but sometimes he butts heads with Naoki when it comes to creative control within the band.
Shuzo Moriya: Shuzo is the sub vocalist, producer, and vice leader of Delight in Class 1-D and is Kentaro's childhood best friend and next door neighbour. As stated earlier, he is the primary producer for the band, as he knows to not only sing, but can create instrumentals of any genre through his computer. Often considered as cold, quiet, mysterious and non-confrontational, Kentaro had to beg him to join his band and Shuzo had no desire to partner up at first, but reluctantly agreed. However, he began warming up to his bandmates, although he is unable to show his appreciation to them. He has a rather deep voice, which makes the listeners get a chill down their spine. He is the only member to not have writing credits on their first track, but was credited alongside Ken for the production.
Naoki Noguchi: Naoki is the main vocalist and the third member to join Delight. He is a playboy, as he loves to fool around with girls and their hearts. His original intention of joining the band was to impress the ladies and make them fawn over him. Kentaro was originally reluctant because of Naoki's intention, but he proved him otherwise, showcasing his strong vocal presence which was a natural talent he used to win girls over, making him the member who gets the most parts in the band. He also has an inferiority complex, often at odds with Kaichi, the most popular member of the group in terms of popularity and looks. Of everyone in the band, he is the only one in his second-year in Class 2-A. Alongside the rest of the band, he helps co-write the music by implementing themes of cool and cute as a subgenre to their lyrics, while also longing for more creative control.
Kaichi Uesugi: Kaichi is the lead vocalist and visual of Delight in Class 1-B. Son of a business corporate, Kaichi gained fame through his school for his looks, maturity and smarts. He originally wanted to enroll in a public school to understand the life of normal people, despite his father wanting to send him to private school. Despite his maturity, however, he is secretly an idol-obsessed otaku who worships idols and wishes to be like one, ultimately making him sign up for the band when he saw the poster on a bulletin board to the surprise of others. He is responsible for covering the costs of the band by renting a warehouse for their music video and providing a dance studio to practice the choreography through his father's money in his home. Kaichi is considered the most popular and best looking member of the group, much to Naoki's chagrin. He is also responsible for bringing attention to the band, simply by promoting himself and his bandmates. He also helps the band practice facial expressions to help them snatch the hearts of girls. Finally, he and Tony are the dance leaders of the band while also helping the others in co-writing their first song.
Hanwen 'Tony' Wu: Preferably called Tony, Hanwen is a Chinese boy from Class 1-C who is the sub vocalist and choreographer of Delight. Much like Kaichi, he is also an otaku albeit in the anime community, especially in the genre of romance. He moved to Japan at the age of 13 through his father's job and quickly began studying its culture and learning the language, ultimately making him a weeaboo. As stated before, he is the choreographer of the band, as he posseses a skillful dance résumé, having won a few dance competitions as a kid growing up in China. He originally intended to join the band to not only sing, but to also provide dance to appeal to their audience, ultimately making him the dance leader, because 'you can't be a proper boyband if you don't have the moves'. He is eccentric, fun-loving and optimistic, and loves to play cupid for his bandmates when they get entangled in their love story. He helps create the steps and helps them practice alongside Kaichi in the lead up to their debut in the Culture Festival. Like the rest of the band excluding Moriya, he helped co-write their first ever single. He also has a long-distance girlfriend that he's been dating since he was 11.
Miyu Aoyama: Miyu is a classmate of both Kentaro and Shuzo at their high-school in Class 1-D. She has a huge crush on Kentaro, and has been silently aiming for him since middle school. She's a little shy and timid, but is also confident within herself. Miyu was hired as a "manager" for the band by Kentaro, and she used this opportunity to get closer to him. Despite not doing much for the band, she has a soft spot for the boys as she can see how much they care for each other. However, she is their social media manager so at least she has something to do.
Ena Miyagi - Ena is a second-year student at the band's highschool and is Naoki's childhood friend. She strongly detests Naoki's playboy personality, often taking responsibility for the actions Naoki does to the girls. However, she has held a secret crush on him for years and has wondered when he will wake up to his senses. She is the music video director for the band, as she has her own camera, and also takes pictures for them for their "promotional matters".
Honoka Kitagawa - Honoka is a shy and lonely student in Class 1-D. She has zero confidence in herself and believes she won't get to experience her ideal life as a student. The only thing she is confident in was in music production, her hobby, by posting music under the stage name 'KitaHono'. She signed up for a Delight Remix competition that the band posted online to a music forum, and took it as an opportunity, unbeknownst to her classmates. She has a secret crush on Shuzo, as she observed his passion for music production as well.
Zhang Xiaoyou - Xiaoyou is Tony's long distance girlfriend from China. They've been dating since they were in elementary school and Tony dearly misses her. She was mistaken by the members as a family member of Tony's and were shocked to find out that she was actually his girlfriend. She is unaware of Tony's otaku obsession.
Chizuru Takayashi - Chizuru is a student in Class 1-B who is a good-looking gyaru. She has a soft spot for boybands and has supported over 15 boybands. She is a self-proclaimed number one fan of 'Delight', even though they haven't debuted yet, and has expressed excitement over their upcoming performance. She is Kaichi's type, as he describes her as 'refreshing' and 'pretty', mainly because she looks like an idol.
Their music will be based on the boyband 'August Moon' from the movie 'The Idea Of You'. Let me know what you think! This was a stupid idea that had a lot of plot potential XD

2024.06.01 17:44 betsbillabong Best Mini Keyboard for Beginner Audio Classes

I teach basic sound practices classes which include both Ableton and Max (but sometimes students use their own software). Keyboards will be attached to iMacs.
I need to buy 16 mini keyboard controllers for students to learn basic Ableton skills. These are mostly total beginners (and if they're not, they have controlllers at home). Push controllers are way out of the budget -- we are looking at under $200 each.
Integration with Ableton, durability, and the usefulness of the pads for finger drumming/triggering samples are most important.
I myself have an Arturia mini (and full size) and like it, but don't know if I'm missing something that might integrate even better with Ableton. Most of these students have never done anything with sound before or even heard of MIDI, so the simpler the better (ie, Analog 3 doesn't matter, etc).
Thoughts?

Nung mga time na yun hindi ko iniisip or hindi man lang sumagi sa utak ko na magkakagusto ako sakanya, nung pumunta kami sa bahay nung isa naming kaklase para mag practice tina-try niya akong kausapin since hindi pa kami masyadong close and I'm a very introverted person (to the point na inaakala nila na may disability ako kaya hindi ako nagsasalita). he/she din everything he/she could para mapasama ako sa usapan or sa plano nila, wala naman akong sinasabi since maganda naman yung mga designs na sinasuggest nila, and after nun nalaman ko na walking distance lang pala yung bahay nila samin (hinatid ko siya sa bahay nila) and then kinabukasan nagpapasend yung tc namin ng sample ng design na aanohin namin, since malayo yung iba naming ka group nagchat siya sakin and nagpatulong para kaming dalawa nalang gagawa ng sample design, pinuntahan ko siya sa kanil,a and habang gumagawa kami ng sample, kwento siya ng kwento to the point na parang sobrang ramdom na ng topic namin kasi wala na siyang maikwento sakin, which is i found very cute.
After that interaction, napasama na'ko sa circle of friends niya. After a few months, unti unti kong napapansin na lagi kong inaabangan yung mga chats and mga rants niya, and lagi nalang siyang pumapasok sa isip ko(ang corny), lagi ko na ding inaantay yung mga aya niya late night walks namin (since ayaw niya magrant sa chat, gusto niya sa personal), nag start na din akong magcrochet and ibibigay ko sakanya (kunwari extrang gawa ko lang yun, or napapangitan ako kaya ko binibigay sakanya.)
He is very vocal sa mga crush niya na mga lalaki, minsan pag nag night walk kami "nagpopogi hunting" kami, and then one day, nung inaya ko siya mag night walk, napag usapan namin yung gender niya, na meron daw siyang crush na babae, then tinanong ko siya kung gay ba talaga siya or bi, hindi pa din daw siya sure, pero sobrang na a-attract siya sa mga lalaki. After that night, nagbibigay na siya ng mix signals sakin (or nag aassume lang ako?), like nung nagkapartner kami nung "Dress up your dream", sinabi niya na bagay daw since OA daw siya and nonchalant daw ako, and yung pag myday niya ng mga late night walks namin, yung pics ng shadows namin sa. gabi and yung mga pics ng milktea namin, and yung mga "Ice cream dates" daw namin lahat yun mina myday niya and yung binigay niya na crochet na ginawa niya na heart na nilagay niya sa id namin (yung mga tipong pang soft launch talaga)
and one day, nahahalata na nila na gusto ko siya, nagsimula na sila asarin kaming dalawa(jokingly? not sure). Ilang beses na'ko umamin sakayan indirectly (like sign language, spanish) and yung pinabasa ko sa kanya yung notes na sinulat ko, yung mga thoughts ko about sakanya, obvious naman na about sakanya yun (pero walang name na nakalagay) then tinanong niya kung para kanino daw yun, hindi ko nasabi sakanya kasi nahiya na bigla ako, and after that nakikita ko yung mga post niya sa fb na may nagbibigay daw sakanya ng mix signals, nag start ako na mag assume na tungkol sakin yun kasi lahat ng post niya tumutugma sakin, like yung pagbibigay ko sa kanya ng mga handmade gifts tapos magkwekwento ako about sa crush ko which is siya. naging ganun yung set up namin hanggang sa graduation.
Gustong gusto ko na umamin sakanya directly, kasi magkakahiwalay na kami ng schools pero nag aalangan ako na baka masira yung cof namin and yung friendship namin ng dahil dun, and isa pa, lagi niyang kinekwento about sa crushes niya and very vocal siya sa pagiging gay niya, while ako hanggang ngayun, di pa din sure sa gender ko, and isa pa ayoko din naman na ma pressure siya or mailang siya ng dahil lang umamin ako, hindi ko alam kung mas better ba na aamin ako or mag i-istay ako sa pagiging bff niya knowing na i have a hidden feelings for me.
give me an advice please badly needed :<

Help me fund a massive global academic opportunity!
Hi,
My name is Rajesh and I'm fundraising for Ayush Sharma--an extremely talented student in India who has educated himself in school and ongoing undergraduate degree through scholarships based on his academic performance. He now needs help to fund a once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity as a Baret Scholar. He has already received $74,500 in scholarship funding, and needs $30,000 USD to make this dream come true.
Here is Ayush's story in his own words:
I am Ayush Sharma, and I am a 19-year-old college sophomore at Ashoka University, India. Throughout my life, I have strived to educate myself. Since I have grown up in a family with very modest means, I have worked hard to self-finance my entire education. My father is a medically challenged priest, who struggled to pay even the $12 fee for my local elementary school.
Facing the possibility of dropping out in the 6th grade, I worked tirelessly to secure a highly selective scholarship that covered all my tuition and expenses for my high school education.
This perseverance continued as I earned a full-ride scholarship to a prestigious high school, and later, another full scholarship to Ashoka University worth $58,000, where I am currently a College Board Scholar. To support myself, I take on freelance writing and coding gigs, so that I do not have to ask my family for any financial support.
Recently, I came across a life-changing gap-year opportunity: the Baret Scholars Program. This highly selective program chooses 180 students globally, taking them across five continents for an intercultural education and experience. The journey starts in New Hampshire and continues through New York, São Paulo, Paris, Istanbul, Nairobi, New Delhi, Beijing, and concludes in Japan. Throughout the program, students meet successful academics and professionals, engage in research, and complete numerous fellowships.
While I am incredibly fortunate to have been accepted into this program, the total cost is prohibitive and exceeds $100,000. The program recognized my superior performance, limited financial means, and has awarded me a $74,500 scholarship to partially cover the tuition and boarding charges. This leaves a gap of $30,000 ($20,000+ $10,000) for boarding charges, visa fees, insurance, and some incidental expenses. Recognizing that I am in no position to raise even 10% of this balance, I have turned to crowdfunding in the hope that I may attend this program.
As part of the enrollment, I need to submit two payments totaling $8,888 on the 15th and 21st June, 2024.
People consider airplanes to be big white machines that fly, and carry people from place to place, but I disagree. I believe airplanes carry hopes inside them. There might not be enough space inside for the luggage of the passenger next to me, but there will be plenty for my dreams.
The Baret Program is a truly life-altering opportunity for which I am immensely grateful. However, a lack of financial resources is currently preventing me from seizing this opportunity. Therefore, I wholeheartedly ask for your financial assistance to make this dream a reality. Any support, whether monetary or simply sharing my story for greater visibility, would go a long way.

Acceptance Letter and Contract: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1iAXl5LVAUtehrXY18QoGxJ5e8XOG4ekk?usp=sharing
Thank you for reading this and all your support!
Regards, Ayush

2024.06.01 15:10 InternationalLove148 My take on season 4.

I have an idea for season 4 of Abbott Elementary. When the new school year has started, Janine and Gregory will have to keep their relationship private from the faculty. This will sound pretty similiar to The Simpsons episode when Bart witness his teacher and principal kissing. Alex discovers Gregory and Janine kissing, both fearing that Alex might reveal their relationship to some of the students, they swear him to secrecy. They hire him as their gofer, so they can secretly exchange messages. Another episode idea, furious parents discovered Jacob sexual identity and are not happy on having a gay teacher at their kids school. The parents signed a petition to have him fired and take it to the school board. Barbara will even defend and Jacob will have a speech to defend his sexuality that will get Chris Perfetti an Emmy nomination. On the season finale, Gregory and Janine relationship gets exposed during an assembly in front of the students and faculty when the curtains fall down with Janine bra revealed and Gregory unbutton shirt. At the end, Ava says, "School dismissed." The incident event made it on the local news.

2024.06.01 15:01 FaithlessnessKey1726 Career dilemma—teaching or library?

(Skip to the end to see the informal poll and avoid the anxious ramble)
My first year of teaching was a disaster from beginning to end. I know most teachers’ first year is the worst and you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing bc you don’t know what you’re doing and there’s so much pressure. Etc.
Even beyond the more typical misery was a lot of personal life tumult and turmoil and trauma and chaos going on, including a debilitating (somewhat unofficial but more or less confirmed based on symptoms) diagnosis I have to live with now without having much insight as to prognosis. And a lot more discomfort involving loved ones.
Reflecting on this year is almost as traumatic as the experience itself. I had next to zero support, with the exception of about 2 weeks under the guidance of an amazing master teacher. But that was it. The morale at the school was beneath rock bottom. Every single day was worse than the day before. I tried to go in positive. But with very few exceptions, everyone was miserable and no one tried to hide it. People were directly rude to me, condescending, sarcastic, openly comtemptful, angry, hated the kids and cursed about them and screamed at them (“shut UP!!!!” “MORON! GET OUT!” “You’re STUPID, I should have LET that student hit you!” “I woulda hit you in the face too if you’d done something like that to me!” Just a few quotes off the top of my head, not to mention one slamming the door on my sped teacher’s face along with our sped students, which the principal did absolutely nothing about despite his friendship with the sped teacher). Discipline/behavior was an absolute JOKE. I think I’ve painted an accurate picture of how awful it was.
I guessed my way through everything but did my absolute best and figured everything out. A bit of productive struggle and hey, by the end of the year I was an expert in a lot of things I knew nothing about months earlier. My rapport with my students was great, to give myself some credit. They loved me. Albeit too much—they thought of my softness as a doormat. They felt free and liberated in my classroom bc I seldom raised my voice. Unfortunately what they’re accustomed to is only listening when yelled at, and as a new teacher, I did not have better tools to manage classroom behavior, beyond building relationships, and my class was a bit out of control. It became all about getting through the curriculum through the 3rd quarter.
My benchmark scores went up, which was pretty amazing considering everything. However at the very beginning of the 4th quarter my principal informed me that he wasn’t renewing my contract and that he would never let me teach 4th grade again, that “I don’t know if I would ever let you teach any grade level, maybe try pre-k—you get nap time and someone is always with you.” So he wrote off my career as an elementary teacher after just a few months of teaching. I could go in about how he had covertly brought in his very own former student (who had only recently began prepping to take the Praxis) as my replacement, unofficially “employed” but “technically not.” But I don’t want to get into that, as furious as it made me. I just stopped writing lesson plans bc no way was I gonna train her for free when they gave me zero support through the year.
I had way more bad days than good—the kids and my para got me through it! I was grateful for that. They were wonderful and I miss them. But I was made to feel incompetent. I slowly started to realize that him booting me was a blessing in disguise, especially after learning how many students I’d have had next year. And some other changes that won’t be helpful.
There’s also a lot of BS going on in our state regarding education. So things are not exactly going to get easier. Alas, I need a paycheck and I went to school and passed praxis to be a teacher. I’m 44 so it’s not like I have many options.
But I did actually finally get an interview at a library last week! I’d applied for 6 years and never got so much as a phone call. Unfortunately it’s part time and drastically less pay (which is honestly pitiful). And it would take me years to make close to what I make now. And I was just getting into certification so as a teacher I’d get a $10k raise. Buuut I really don’t want to miss a rare opportunity to get my foot in the door at the library!
I’ve got dozens of job offers in my district. I had 6 principals call me and email me yesterday alone! I know I could make decent money. But I don’t want to turn down the library job, which absolutely would not cut it financially.
I forgot to mention a key component of this dilemma: Teaching is extremely overstimulating to me. I’m autistic/adhd. This was part of my misery. Between my loud a/c units in my classroom and the kids noises desks constantly clanking and kids constantly talking over me etc etc etc, and the awful attitudes of most coworkers and all the other stuff, I barely made it to the end of the year. I know most of us actually feel that way, but my day to day in the classroom is beyond awful. I cried constantly, I had panic attacks going in every single morning during the 4th quarter after years of reduced panic attacks, most days I felt frustrated, and some days I even had moments where I could not even talk anymore and had to go home (these days where at least one kid told me to “Shut the f- - k up b-tch!” or fought or both plus admin treated me like crap and I had enough). Not to mention spending entire weekends and weeknights writing lesson plans, creating lessons, grading, entering grades, etc etc etc. All I could think about every day was how much I wished I could get a library job!! I even had a student tell me I would make a better librarian than teacher. She was excited when I got the call about the interview lol.
But what if my next school is better? What if I go in knowing expectations and having a better idea of how to do things and how to establish classroom procedures, what if it’s better? What if it’s stupid to give up on a better paying job? I’d love to get my MLIS but realistically, there aren’t very many librarian jobs and moving isn’t an option. The day to day would almost be worth the paycut. I’ve contemplated doing both, just for one year. I know that sounds nuts, and it’s risky, but what’s more important? My paycheck, or my mental health?! I honestly don’t know! I need the money. But I also need a peaceful environment.
Here are my options:
A) Substitute w library for almost the same money as I made uncertified, which was barely enough
B) Library + teaching full time bc you’re insane and unrealistic
C) Library only + MLIS bc it’s your dream & short term paycut is worth long term happiness.
D) Girl, are you insane?! Teaching only bc it’s the smart move!
