The Islamic tradition on Jihad goes back long before and much more extensively than what Ibn Taymiya (1268-1328) taught. Daniel Pipes' documentation of this matter should be decisive in showing this rebuttal is a whitewash or selective reading of history. The Quran itself, the Hadith, Muhammad's own life lived as a general, Muslim actions by the Arabs in the first century after Muhammad's death and the initial invasions by the Turks in the Balkans all show otherwise. There was lots of jihad, even lots of blowback crusades, in the world long before Taymiya walked the earth! Robert Spencer explained (
www.jihadwatch.org/archives/016230.php) how entrenched the teaching of jihad is in mainstream Islamic sources, in response to Karen Armstrong’s review of his book “The Truth About Muhammad”: “In fact, as I outline in the book (pages 76-78), Muhammad's earliest biographer, Ibn Ishaq, traces three stages of development in the Qur'anic doctrine of warfare, culminating in offensive warfare to establish the hegemony of Islamic law by force of arms. That has been understood throughout history by mainstream Islamic teachers (Ibn Kathir, Ibn Juzayy, As-Suyuti, Ibn Qayyim) as the Qur'an's last word on jihad.” Further documentation heavy duty documentation about “jihad” in Muslim sources can be found in Andrew Bostom’s “The Legacy of Jihad.”
In the Hadiths, which form part of the foundation for the Sharia law’s prescriptions, Muhammad repeatedly is reported as recommending the cause of violent jihad. When asked about what the “best deed” someone could do besides the decision to become a Muslim, Muhammad replied: “To participate in Jihad (holy fighting) in Allah’s cause.” He also claimed “a journey undertaken for jihad in the evening or morning merits a reward better than the world and all that is in it.” He even warned Muslims who avoided participating in jihad would suffer God’s wrath: “Muhammad was firm about the necessity of jihad not only for himself personally, but for every Muslim. He warned believers that ‘he who does not join the warlike expedition (jihad), or equip, or looks well after a warrior’s family when he is away, will be smitten by Allah with a sudden calamity.” He also those participating in jihad would enjoy a much higher reward in paradise: “There is another act which elevates the position of a man in Paradise to a grade one hundred (higher), and the elevation between one grade and the other is equal to the height of the heaven from the earth. He (Abu Sa’id ) said: What is that act? He [Muhammad] replied: Jihad in the way of Allah! Jihad in the way of Allah!” Another man once asked Muhammad: “Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward).” Islam’s greatest prophet responded: “I do not find such a deed.” (As cited by Robert Spencer, “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades), pp. 32-33). Any idealistic young Muslim man with violent tendencies and poor material prospects for this life that literally believes such statements and others like them could be inspired to strike against any set of infidels should no qualifiers appear in their context.
In one particularly important hadith that later Muslims repeatedly referred to when discussing the theory of how to wage jihad, Muhammad is reported as offering three choices to unbelievers before attacking them.
It has been reported from Sulaiman b. Buraid through his father that when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) appointed anyone as leader of any army or detachment he would especially exhort him to fear Allah and to be good to the Muslims who were with him. He would say: Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war. . . . When you meet your enemies who are polytheists [Muslims call traditional Christians “polytheists” because they believe in the Deity of Christ and the Trinity—EVS] , invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to accept Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting them. . . . . If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya [the special head tax Christian and Jewish dhimmis had to pay Muslim governments—EVS]. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them. (Sahih Muslim, book 19, no. 4294, as cited by Spencer, “Politically Incorrect Guide,” pp. 35-36).
Notice that this passage not only assumes Muslims would engage in violent jihad, it plainly authorizes aggressive warfare as well. “Jihad” isn’t mainly about the struggle to control immoral desires nor is it only about Muslims defending themselves from attacks by infidels and pagans. Merely being “the Other” (i.e., non-Muslim) is theoretically enough to trigger jihad from Muslims when they believe their military strength exceeds their opponents’. According to another hadith appears several times in the most reliable collection, there’s no built-in limitations on when Muslims may wage jihad against unsubmissive unbelievers: “The Prophet [Muhammad] spoke clearly about his own responsibility to wage war for the religion he had founded: ‘I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and perform
As-Salat ([daily] prayers) and give
Zakat [charitable gifts, like tithes], so if they perform all that, then they save their lives and properties from me except for Islamic laws, and their reckoning (accounts) will be with (done by) Allah.’” (Bukhari, vol. 1, book 2, no. 25; see also Bukhari, vol. 1, book 8, no. 392; vol. 4, book 56, no. 2946; vol. 9, book 88, no. 6924; vol. 9, book 96, nos. 7284-7285; as in Spencer, “Politically Incorrect Guide,” p. 37). Hence, much like Communism and Nazism, Islam is ideologically an intrinsically aggressive ideology that believes itself authorized to spread its belief system (including the Sharia) over the whole human race by military force when missionary efforts fail; “peace” will only be achieved when Muslim governments rule every square inch of the globe.
Now Islam is an extremely legalistic religion which mechanically regulates many, many small details of daily human behavior in ways that would warm the heart of the most ardent Orthodox Jew. For example, Irshad Manji (“The Trouble With Islam,” p. 23) reports that one popular Islamic teaching warns against “excessive laughter.” Correspondingly, the Ayatollah Khomeini once said there were no jokes in Islam. (Ibn Warraq, “Why the West Is Best,” “City Journal,” Winter 2008, vol. 18, no. 1;
http://www.city-journal.org/2008/18_1_snd-west.html). Therefore, careful Muslim legal analysis would be needed for such a central human activity as war against other nations’ infidels. So what do the four principal Sunni Muslim schools of law teach about jihad? Their rulings and interpretations largely compose the Sharia. Although the Maliki, Nanafi, Hanbali, and Shafi’I schools have their differences, all four agree that jihad is important. Their medieval rulings cannot be deemed obsolete by modern Muslim standards because of the generally accepted principle that the “gates of ijtihad” (i.e., free inquiry to discern Allah’s will as found in the Quran and Islamic tradition) closed many centuries ago. It’s not like someone mentioning long-forgotten, obsolete royal decrees by William the Conqueror (who won the battle of Hastings in 1066) in order to characterize contemporary English law. According to Manji, the gates of ijtihad, i.e., independent, creative thought, closed by the twelfth century. Consequently, as she notes (“The Problem with Islam Today,” p. 145), “All types of innovation [i.e., “bida”] became suspect and eventually banned.” Today, the contemporary West’s “chronological snobbery” presupposes all change is good until proven otherwise. By contrast, the Islamic concept of “bida” made the exact opposite assumption: Innovation was bad until demonstrated otherwise. As a result, this profoundly conservative element of Islamic culture helped to freeze into place all the basic, foundational teachings of Muslim law. For since the death of the Hanbali school’s eponymous founder, Ahmed ibn Hanbal in 855, the Sunnis have recognized no one else as a first-class mujtahid, that is, a jurist possessing the authority to originate his own legislation based on the Sunna (i.e., the practices and sayings of Muhammad) and Quran. According to Islamic scholar Cyril Glasse, the tendency of Sunni jurisprudence has been to crank out commentaries on commentaries and marginalia (see Robert Spencer, “Religion of Peace?: Why Christianity Is and Islam Isn’t,” pp. 81-82). Because the gates of ijtihad closed, as Spencer comments (“Politically Incorrect Guide,” p. 38), “Islamic teaching on principal matters has long been settled and is not to called into question.” Although some reform-minded Muslims call for reopening the gates of ijtihad, such as Manji, and the Shi’ites don’t think they ever closed, the leading religious authorities of Sunni Islam, such as the sheiks and imams at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, would entertain opening them no more than the Vatican’s teaching office would reconsider papal infallibility. For example, the Shafi’i legal manual “Umdat al-Salik, translated into English as “Reliance of the Traveller,” which received Al-Azhar’s imprimatur in 1991, spends some 11 pages on “lower,” i.e., literal jihad after briefly contrasting it to the “higher jihad” of struggling against one’s lower self. Even when there’s no caliph, which the Turks abolished in 1924, this apparently up-to-date legal manual says Muslims must still wage jihad. (Spencer, “Politically Incorrect Guide, pp. 40-41). As this background context shows, the citations of medieval rulings and interpretations of the Sharia on jihad by the four legal schools isn’t an unfair procedure.
Various Muslim jurists before the time of the Hanbali jurist Ibn Taymiyya (died 1382) plainly taught violent jihad was part of Islamic teaching. Obviously alluding back to the hadith quoted above that offered three choices to infidels before aggressive military action could be commenced, the Malki jurist Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (died 996) proclaimed:
Jihad is a precept of Divine Institution. Its performance by certain individuals may dispense others from it. We Malakis maintain that it is preferable not to begin hostilities with the enemy before having invited the latter to embrace the religion of Allah except where the enemy attacks first. They have the alternative of either converting to Islam or paying the poll tax (jizya), short of which war will be declared against them. (As from al-Qayrawani, “La Risala (Epitre sur les elements du dogme et de la loi de l’Islam selon le rite malikit,” trans. into French from the Arabic originally by Leon Bercher, p. 165; as cited by Spencer, “Politically Incorrect Guide, pp. 38-39).
The Shafi’I scholar Abu’l Hasan al-Mawardi (died 1058) had no problem with jihad waging aggressive attacks against unbelievers:
The mushrikun [infidels] of Dar al-Harb (the area of battle [i.e., the parts of the world ruled by non-Muslims—EVS] area of two types: First, those whom the call of Islam has reached, but they have refused it and have taken up arms. The amir of the army has the option of fighting them . . . in accordance with what he judges to be the best interest of the Muslims and most harmful to the mushrikun . . . Second, those whom the invitation to Islam has not reached, although such persons are few nowadays since Allah has made manifest the call of his Messenger . . . it is forbidden to . . . begin an attack before explaining the invitation to Islam to them, informing them of the miracles of the Prophet [Muhammad] and making plain the proofs so as to encourage acceptance on their part; if they still refuse to accept after this, war is waged against them and they are treated as those whom the call has reached. (Mawardi, “The Laws of Islamic Governance,” Ta-Ha Publishers, 1996, p. 60; as cited by Spencer, “Politically Incorrect Guide,” pp. 40).
Shaikh Burhanuddin Ali of Marghinan (d. 1196) wrote in the “Hidayah,” which mainly teaches Hanafi doctrine, also wrote in favor of aggressive, literal jihad:
It is not lawful to make war upon any people who have never before been called to the faith, without previously requiring them to embrace it, because the Prophet so instructed his commanders, directing them to call the infidels to the faith, and also because the people will hence perceive that they are attacked for the sake of religion, and not for the sake of taking their property, or making slaves of their children, and on this consideration it is possible that they may be induced to agree to the call, in order to save themselves from the troubles of war. . . . . If the infidels, upon receiving the call, neither consent to it nor agree to pay capitation tax [jizya], it is then incumbent on the Muslims to call upon God for assistance, and to make war upon them, because God is the assistant of those who serve Him, and the destroyer of His enemies, the infidels, and it is necessary to implore His aid upon every occasion; the Prophet, moreover, commands us to do so. (Hidayah, vol. 2, p. 140, excerpted in Thomas P. Hughes, “Jihad,” in “A Dictionary of Islam” (London: W.H. Allen, 1895), pp. 243-48; as quoted in Andrew G. Bostom, “The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War and the Fate of Non-Muslims,” p. 27).
Ibn Khaldun (died 1406), the great Muslim historian, sociologist, and philosopher, was also a Maliki jurist. According to his summary of five centuries of Sunni Muslim legal analysis and decisions about jihad:
In the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the [Muslim] mission and [the obligation to] convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force. . . . The other religious groups did not have a universal mission, and the holy war was not a religious duty for them, save only for purposes of defense. . . . Islam is under obligation to gain power over other nations.” (Khaldun, “The Muqudimmah: An Introduction to History,” trans. Franz Rosenthal, vol. 1, (New York: Pantheon, 1958), p. 473; as quoted in Bostom, “The Legacy of Jihad,” p. 28).
The general Shi’ite view of jihad agreed with the consensus Sunni legal position. Al-Amili (died 1622), a noted theologian, wrote in the Jami-I-Abbasi, a popular Shi’ite Persian legal manual: “Islamic Holy War [jihad] against followers of other religions, such as Jews, is required unless they convert to Islam or pay the poll tax.” (As quoted in Bostom, “The Legacy of Jihad,” p. 28). Not only do these learned Muslim jurists assume “jihad” refers to military activity in these passages, but they believe Muslims have a duty to engage in aggressive warfare in order to spread their faith. Who can doubt the accuracy of Joseph Schacht’s blunt assessment?: “The basis of the Islamic attitude towards unbelievers is the law of war; they must be either converted or subjugated or killed” (“An Introduction to Islamic Law,” Oxford, Clarendon Press, 1982; as cited by Spencer, “Politically Incorrect Guide, p. 44). Ibn Kaldun didn’t disagree himself about the options for Christians: “It is [for them to choose among] conversion to Islam, payment of the poll tax [jizya], or death” (as quoted by Spencer, “Politically Incorrect Guide,” 54, from Bat Ye’or, “The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam,” (Madison, NJ: Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 1996), p. 296).
Moderately conservative Muslim scholars avoid truly reforming Islamic jurisdiction to fit with modern realities, such as Western domination of the modern state system. The extremely conservative nature of Islamic law in the Sunni tradition binds their hands, so when explaining jihad they look for convenient ad hoc solutions that only nibble at the edges while avoiding the hard issues raised by traditional teaching. They don’t want to recognize truly, for example, how the traditional interpretative principle of naskh makes mincemeat out of a case built using the chronologically earlier “peaceful” Meccan suras of the Quran while ignoring or discounting the later “warlike” Medinan suras. The Al-Azhar conformists, such as Jad al-Haqq in a two-volume textbook, avoids working out the details of how long supposedly temporary truces/treaties should last between believers and what happens after they end. Bassam Tibi comments about the quandary this point leaves Al-Haqq in: “There is no discussion of what occurs after that time, which implies that it is seen as heretical to revise the classical doctrine and that there is no desire to review this doctrine in the light of changed international circumstances. The result is conformity to acquiescence to the new international [territorial nation-state] system, but no effort to alter the classic categories.” Al-Haqq also labors hard to avoid associating the call to unbelievers to become a Muslim (da’wa) with armed jihad (al-musallah) or fighting (qital). His statement that “Islam was not disseminated with the power of the sword” is neither historically accurate nor honest. Tibi plainly perceives the moderately conservative al-Azhar conformists have made only minor superficial adjustments to Islamic law on jihad, not a fundamental reform that recognizes the modern system of sovereign states instituted by the Treaty of Westphalia that ended the Thirty Years War (1648):
In short, Muslim states adhere to public international law but make no effort to accommodate the outmoded Islamic ethics of war and peace to the current international order. Thus, their conduct is based on outward conformity [to international law when they join United Nations—EVS], not on a deeper “cultural accommodation”—that is, a rethinking of Islamic tradition that would make it possible for them to accept a more universal law regulating war and peace in place of Islamic doctrine. Such a “cultural accommodation” of the religious doctrine to the changed social and historical realities would mean a reform of the role of the religious doctrine itself as the cultural underpinning of Islamic ethics of war and peace. . . . The [apparent] convergence [of Islamic and international legal traditions] is limited to practical matters and does not reach to basic conceptions of war and peace. . . . Though the Islamic world has made many adjustments to the modern international system, there has been no cultural accommodation, no rigorously critical rethinking of Islamic tradition. (Bassam Tibi, “War and Peace in Islam,” “The Ethics of War and Peace: Religious and Secular Perspectives, ed. Terry Nardin: (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1996), as reprinted in Bostom, “The Legacy of Jihad,” pp. 337-338).
Islamic law hasn’t fundamentally accepted the modern territorial state. It still focuses on the relationship between the community of believers, the Umma, and those unbelievers not ruled by Muslims, in the “House of War.” Islamic conquests are not called “wars” (hurub), but “openings” (futuhat) to the world to Islam’s call to convert. They don’t call the use of force to promote Islam as an act of war, since the call to convert (da’wa) is deemed to be an effort to abolish war after the whole world joins “the house of Islam.” The similarity to the Communist definition of “peace” is obvious (cf. Spencer’s citation of Islamist theorist Sayyid Qutb, “Politically Incorrect Guide,” pp. 41-42). Instead, the Al-Azhar University conformists have made minor tactical adjustments rather than serious strategic rethinking of traditional Islamic law. And, as Robert Spencer has observed about the laws of dhimmitude, Islamic laws that temporarily and conveniently gather dust for a period can later be remembered and imposed with a vengeance when other conditions change. (Compare “Politically Incorrect Guide,” p. 51).
It's a major mistake for one apologist for Islam to say "most modern Muslims . . . understand their scripture differently today than you would like to accuse them of understanding." Of course, many of them don't know it that well, such as those who feel they have to recite the Quran mechanically in Arabic when they don't hardly understand Arabic! But look carefully at the scholarly journal articles reprinted in Andrew Bostom's "The Legacy of Jihad," such as Bassam Tibbi's. Notice the tortured legalistic contortions or pragmatic expedients that Jad Al-Haqq engages in concerning suspending jihad in today's world. Someone like Qutb, the lead theorist of the Muslim Brotherhood (the author of "Milestones") uses and interprets the Islamic primary sources on (say) jihad or whatever far more authentically than someone like Al-Haqq. This argument is like a liberal Christian's saying, "Well, no one has to interpret Genesis's days literally or John to accept the Deity of Christ." On the basis of this argument about Muslims view of jihad in their primary sources, they (the liberal Christians) have a perfectly reasonable "interpretation" of the Bible as well. But, as we should know, the fundamentalist interpretations of the days of Genesis being 24-hour days and the Gospel of John's denial of Unitarian views of God (as per John 1:1) are a far more correct handling of Scripture than the liberal viewpoint. Similarly, that's why Qutb would beat Haqq, hands down, based on the same fundamentalist religious premises (literal interpretation) applied to Islam's authoritative texts.
Ideas have consequences. All the passages in Islam's primary texts, when taken literally and straightforwardly, using traditional modes of interpretation as sanctioned by the leading authorities in four legal schools of Islam, will generate far more violence on average than people taking the Bible similarly literally. After all, how many traditional Christians (including in places like Mississippi) burn down mosques and kill Muslims every time Christ gets insulted somehow? How many Catholics riots in New York or elsewhere when a picture of the Virgin Mary had dung and pornographic pictures attached to it in a modern art museum in Brooklyn? The right-wing Christians are far more tolerant than the Muslims who rioted, killed, demonstrated, etc. over the Danish cartoons insulting Muhammad, the Nigerian journalist who said Muhammad would like to have married one of the Miss World contestants, or the British schoolteacher who let her class name a teddy bear "Muhammad." Who has more reason to fear?: Do Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens seriously fear fundamentalist Christians will kill them for their atheistic books? Or how about Salman Rushdie and Ayaan Hirsi Ali's fear of fundamentalist Muslims? The conservative Christians are obviously far more tolerant in practical terms than the Islamist Muslims. After all, Rushdie was specifically targeted by a leading Muslim nation's top leader, and Hirsi Ali knows well that Theo Van Gogh was assassinated for making the independent movie that she wrote the script for.
As Daniel Pipes explains, before quoting the French scholar on the topic, Alfred Morabia, the fundamentalist Islamists who advocate violence shouldn't be seen as marginal extremists today in the Muslim world, especially when they end up running countries (e.g., Ruhollah Khomeini) or major terrorist groups: "For most Muslims in the world today, these moves away from the old sense of jihad are rather remote. They neither see their own [Muslim] rulers as targets deserving of jihad nor are they read to become Quakers. Instead, the classic notion of jihad continues to resonate with vast numbers of them, as Alfred Morabia, a foremost French scholar of the topic, noted in 1993: 'Offensive, bellicose jihad, the one codified by the specialists and theologians, has not ceased to awaken an echo in the Muslim consciousness, both individual and collective. . . . To be sure, contemporary apologists present a picture of this religious obligation that conforms well to the contemporary norms of human rights, . . . but the people are not convinced by this. . . . The overwhelming majority of Muslims remain under the spiritual sway of a law . . . whose key requirement is the demand, not to speak of the hope, to make the Word of God triumph everywhere in the world.' In brief, jihad in the raw remains a powerful force in the Muslim world, and this goes far to explain the immense appeal of a figure like Osama bin Laden in the immediate aftermath of September 11, 2001."
Theory of violent jihad among Muslims has mountains of evidence supporting it. Robert Spencer once asked: “[If] any orthodox sects or schools of Islamic jurisprudence that rejected the necessity of jihad warfare in order to institute Sharia.” (

For example, Majid Khadduri of Johns Hopkins wrote in 1955 that jihad is "an instrument for both the universalization of [Islamic] religion and the establishment of an imperial world state." That was before, as Pipes comments, "political correctness conquered the universities." Where did he get such an idea from? Well, let's consider Pipes' description of the theory and development of jihad legally: "As for the conditions under which jihad might be undertaken--when, by whom, against whom, with what sort of declaration of war, ending how, with what division of spoils, and so on--these are matters that religious scholars worked out in excruciating detail over the centuries. But about the basic meaning of jihad--warfare against unbelievers to extend Muslim domains--there was perfect consensus. For example, the most important collection of
hadith (reports about the sayings and actions of Muhammad), called
Sahih al-Bukhari, contains 199 references to jihad, and every one of them refers to it in the sense of armed warfare against non-Muslims. To quote the 1885
Dictionary of Islam, jihad is "an incumbent religious duty, established in the Qur'an and in the traditions [
hadith] as a divine institution, and enjoined especially for the purpose of advancing Islam and of repelling evil from Muslims."

Energy Crises In Germany and Texas Are Exposing The Folly of Renewable Energy _ Opinion

All over the world, consumers are being slammed by soaring energy prices. In Australia, the wholesale cost of electricity jumped by 141 percent in the first three months of 2022. In Britain, residential customers are paying about 43 percent more for their household energy than they were last year, and prices are expected to jump another 65 percent in October. And here in the U.S., we're paying close to $5 a gallon—for the first time in generations. That's thanks in no small part to the Biden administration, which has restricted oil and gas drilling while continually promoting renewable energy. Among the most recent moves: a pledge to deploy 30,000 megawatts of offshore wind by 2030.

Pushing for offshore wind—one of
the most expensive forms of electricity production—may please some of Biden's supporters, but the latest evidence shows that investing too much in wind energy is terrible for grid reliability, as well as bad for consumers.
Consider the case of Texas. Last month, renewable boosters in the state were crowing about how
renewables were "bailing out" the Texas power grid. Yet those boosters have been silent lately. Why? Over the past few days, as temperatures have soared to over 100 degrees and electricity use in Texas has been setting new records, ERCOT, the state's grid operator,
has been asking residents to use less power.
Texas doesn't have enough juice because at the same time that power demand is soaring, output from the 35,000 megawatts of wind capacity in the state has been falling to near zero.
According to
data published by ERCOT, on both July 10 and July 11, at about 1 pm, when power demand was rising dramatically, the output from all of that wind capacity was only about 1,000 megawatts or roughly 3 percent of its potential output. The wind energy was just... disappearing.
Wind energy's disappearing act is a recurring problem in Texas. During Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, as the state's electric grid was on the verge of collapse, the output from the state's wind sector plummeted. As Ed Crooks of the consulting firm Wood Mackenzie noted last December, the long-term significance of the Texas crisis" is "directly connected to renewable energy.
The worst of the problems hit during an extended 'wind drought' with low wind speeds and power output across a vast area of the U.S."
When it comes to hot climates like Texas, the times when you need the most energy are also going to be the times when you have the least wind. Wind energy is a losing proposition—especially given that due to population growth and a booming industrial sector, electricity demand in Texas is growing faster than in any other state. And yet, the ERCOT grid isn't adding enough dispatchable generation capacity to meet demand. Instead, it has been inundated with heavily subsidized wind and solar. That has made the state's grid far more reliant on weather-dependent renewables.
Wind energy's vanishing act isn't a secret. Back in 2011,
in a piece for National Review, I pointed out that during an August heat wave, output from the state's wind turbines was just 1,500 megawatts, or 15 percent of what the state was using. I found that there were three days on which wind energy was able to contribute a scant 1 percent of total demand.
Texas isn't alone. Dramatic swings in wind energy output are wreaking havoc on the German electric grid, too. Last December,
Reuters reported that Europe's largest wind producers were experiencing similar problems—especially Germany. And this week,
Bloomberg reported that German electricity prices had more than doubled due to calm winds and reduced flows of natural gas from Russia.
"Wind power output in Europe's biggest power market peaked at 8,242 megawatts at midnight and is poised to fall to about 2,000 megawatts on Tuesday," per
Bloomberg.
The lack of wind means Germany and other European countries will have to burn more natural gas. That will result in yet more pain for consumers because natural gas prices in Europe are now
about $49 per million Btu or roughly eight times the
price of that same amount of energy here in the U.S. It's readily apparent that the energy crisis that is engulfing Germany and the rest of Europe is the result of bad energy policy. Over the past two decades, Europe has spent too much money on renewables and too little on hydrocarbons or preserving existing coal and nuclear plants.
The same is true in Texas.
Between 2014 and 2020, about 6,200 megawatts of coal-fired capacity in Texas was retired, and despite rising electricity demand, the state has not added any new gas-fired generation over the past two decades. The result is that by the end of next year, the Texas grid could have more weather-dependent generation capacity than it has gas-fired capacity.
The punchline here is obvious: We could cover all of Texas and Germany with wind turbines, but we can't make the wind blow. Those two provinces are running short of electricity because they have made their electric grids too reliant on weather-dependent renewables.
If climate change means we are going to be facing more extreme weather—hotter summers, colder winters, or both—it is pure foolishness to make our electric grid dependent on the weather. And yet, that is exactly what is happening.
Fact check_ False claim that Permian Basin oil supply would fuel America for 200 years

The claim: Parts of the Permian Basin have enough oil to fuel America for 200 years This year, due to the increase in the price of crude oil and a shortage of refining capacity, gas prices rose dramatically. It has put financial pressure on consumers and political pressure the Biden administration to act accordingly to lower prices. As a result, the role America plays in the international oil market has become a top political issue.
"This small area has enough oil to fuel America for the next 200 years," reads a
a July 12 Facebook post that was shared more than 1,400 times in three days. The image in the post shows a map of Texas and New Mexico with a part greyed out to indicate the boundary of the Permian Basin, the U.S.'s
most productive oil region. Within that greyed out section, two dotted yellow lines outline the Delaware and Midland Basins.
Other versions of
the claim amassed thousands of additional shares on Facebook.
Estimates of how much oil is in the Delaware and Midland Basins can vary, but experts told USA TODAY even if the highest estimate were true, it would not be enough to meet Americans' oil consumption needs for two centuries.
U.S. Geological Survey assessments show those two basins contain about 66 billion barrels of oil, which equates to about nine years of America's oil consumption – not 200 years as the post claims.
USA TODAY reached out to users who shared the claim for comment.
Permian Basin's oil would not last two centuries, according to agency estimates Ted Kury,
director of Energy Studies for the Public Utility Research Center at the University of Florida, said estimates of the amount of oil in the Permian Basin, and the U.S. overall, vary because of different calculation models.
The U.S. Geological Survey
in 2018 announced that the Delaware Basin contains an estimated mean of more than 46 billion barrels of
continuous oil. And
in 2016, the agency estimated the Midland Basin to contain a mean of about 20 billion barrels of continuous oil, totaling around 66 billion barrels.
Albuquerque-based
KRQE News reported that Ryan Flynn, the executive director of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association at the time, said the 2018 announcement meant the state could "meet the energy needs of the entire U.S. for decades to come."
Kury said that number "certainly doesn't agree" with all oil supply figures. He cited
a January report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration that said proved reserves of U.S.
crude oil and lease condensate were at 38.2 billion barrels at the end of 2020. This includes reserves across the country, not just the Permian Basin.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration,
proved reserves are measurements "geological and engineering data demonstrate with reasonable certainty to be recoverable in future years from known reservoirs under existing economic and operating conditions.”
As a result, proved reserve estimates can change due to the production of existing reserves, changes in prices and new technologies, according to the agency. This explains the disparity between the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey estimates, which measure continuous oil "regardless of any economic or accessibility considerations,"
its website explains.
No matter how much oil is actually in the Permian Basin, Kury said it wouldn't necessarily reflect how much oil would or could be accessed.
"It may be in order to get to some of that oil we're going to need technologies we don't even have yet," he said. "Just because it's down there doesn't mean we can physically extract it."
And even if physical extraction were possible, Kury said it might not be economically viable to do so.
Hugh Daigle,
an associate professor at The University of Texas at Austin's department of petroleum and geosystems engineering, cited
the U.S. EIA report that the U.S. consumed an average of nearly 20 million barrels of petroleum per day in 2021, which equates to more than 7.2 billion barrels during the year.
He said if Americans' rate of oil consumption remained the same, the country would need almost 1.5 trillion barrels of oil in a 200-year time span.
"None of the numbers I've seen in the Permian Basin come close to that," Daigle said.
Using U.S. Energy Information Administration data on proved reserves in the U.S., Daigle estimated the Permian Basin contains about 15 billion barrels of crude oil.
Even if the 66 billion figure – the highest estimate of continuous oil in the Midland and Delaware Basins – were accurate and accessible, it would only be enough to meet Americans' current oil consumption for about nine years.

Kamala Harris picks up another loser talking point on abortion

Vice President Kamala Harris is one of the worst politicians in the country. So naturally, she took up one of the least persuasive arguments in favor of abortion after the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade.
Speaking to CNN, Harris tried to win over as many people as possible by claiming that abortion affects everyone. “When we think about it, everyone has something at risk on this,” Harris said. “First of all, if you are a parent of sons, do think about what this means for the life of your son and what that will mean in terms of the choices he will have.”
You may not have been persuaded by Democratic arguments that abortion must be legal
up to birth and maybe even a
little bit later, but have you ever considered that your son might be responsible for caring for a child after he gets a woman pregnant? Wouldn’t it be so much easier for him to pressure, that woman into aborting your grandchild?

A left-wing nonprofit working to end mass incarceration landed a $171.7 million taxpayer-funded government contract that could potentially hit $1 billion to help unaccompanied minors avoid deportation, Fox News Digital has discovered.

The Vera Institute of Justice, a New York-based group that supports defunding police and views immigration enforcement agencies as a "threat" to civil liberties, was awarded a Health and Human Services-funded
contract in March to provide legal assistance to unaccompanied minors, according to a federal database.
The arrangement lasts until March 2023 but can reach as high as $983 million if renewed until March 2027, the agreement shows. This appears to be the largest federal contract Vera has secured for immigration-related services for any single year dating back to the mid-2000s.
The lofty nine-figure contract came
amid an escalating border crisis that saw more than 239,000 migrant encounters in May alone -- a historic high. There were 14,699 encounters of unaccompanied minors in May, an increase from the 12,180 encountered in April and slightly higher than the 14,052 encountered in May 2021.
According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP), there was an average of 692 minors in the agency's custody during May. So far, there have been more than 100,000 unaccompanied minor encounters in fiscal year 2022, which started in October, compared to 147,925 for fiscal year 2021 and 33,239 in fiscal year 2020.
Unaccompanied minors are not being removed under the Title 42 public health order -- which has been used to expel a majority of migrants
coming across the southern border due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead, they are typically transferred into the custody of Health and Human Services -- and moved across the country to parents or sponsors already in the country.
The Biden administration has scrambled to deal with the massive surge of unaccompanied children, as well as adult migrants and family units, coming across the border. Most recently, the Biden administration signed a five-year contract to start leasing an abandoned school in Greensboro, North Carolina, to house unaccompanied minors away from the southern border.
Potentially thousands of migrant children will be detained at the American Hebrew Academy campus in Greensboro until they can be housed with either family members already living here in the U.S. or other sponsors, Fox News learned last month.
Republicans have blamed the
Biden administration for the massive surge in migration to the southern border, pointing to more liberal policies, including limiting of interior enforcement, calls for amnesty for illegal immigrants -- and the rolling back of Trump-era policies like the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) and border wall construction.
The Biden administration has focused its response to the crisis on targeting "root causes" like poverty, violence, corruption and climate change in Central America.

The Vera Insitute, meanwhile, is propelled by taxpayer-backed government grants and contracts like the one it secured in March. Between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021, $152 million of the group's $191 million in revenue came from government sources, its most recent financial audit shows.
The institute seeks to end "mass incarceration" by cutting down on the number of jails, prisons and detention centers in the United States. The group has also signaled support for defunding police.
Additionally, Vera conducts "on-the-ground work" with progressive prosecutor offices to help them "implement policies and build evidence that limiting the number of people who enter the criminal legal system and centering racial equity makes the public safer," according to its website.
The institute also launched the "Motion for Justice" campaign, in which they work with prosecutor offices and community-based groups to "improve safety by creating diversion programs" that focus on racial equity.
The Vera Institute did not respond to a Fox News Digital inquiry.

San Francisco children were recorded on video having to walk past what appeared to be one of the city’s
open-air drug dens on their way home from school.
Ricci Wynne posted the video on Twitter last week, writing that the students were getting off the 14 transit line
on 8th and Mission Streets when they encountered what appeared to be the homeless encampment sprawled across the sidewalk.
"This is no back ally [sic]," Wynne wrote. "This is a main artery in our city that has been hijacked bye [sic] drug dealers and now it is Pure filth!"
The video shows a stream of children and other passengers getting off the public transit system before the camera cuts to the sidewalk, where a group of apparently homeless people was gathered.
Wynne added, "Now ask yourself this question would you want your children to walk through this squalor just to get home from school?"

Gamaldi said what happened in the video is not far from what is happening in a third-world country. He added that such behavior is a result of politicians, activists, and the media pushing a "revolving door criminal justice system" and defunding the police.
"And this is the result. They should be ashamed of what they've done because this is their fault. I mean, if a recent poll in San Francisco said that 70% of people believe their quality of life is down. 69% percent don't feel safe to walk the streets. 88% believe that the homelessness situation is getting worse. And surprise, surprise, it has led to an exodus in San Francisco to the tune of 60,000 people just in the last year alone."
The Linkage Center was intended to connect homeless people and drug addicts with social services, but multiple accounts have claimed people were instead
shooting up or smoking fentanyl inside.
San Francisco logged
650 overdose deaths last year and at least 700 in 2020. Recovery advocates have said that every one of those deaths was preventable.

Hey everyone! I'm a woman who trains regularly with both a women's bar and with "men's" barbells and I'm here to answer all your questions about what women's bars are, why they exist, who needs one, and the pros and cons of these bars. I will also discuss what women's bars are NOT (there are some myths floating around that we need to bust). If your question isn't answered here, please feel free to ask in the comments.
TL;DR: Women's bars are specialty equipment for the sport of Olympic weightlifting (snatch and clean and jerk) and are also used in Crossfit for these lifts. If you don't train or compete in the women's divisions of these specific sports, a standard 20kg/45lb power bar is probably going to be more useful to you. This includes you if you're into powerlifting or just plain old noncompetitive strength training. What a women's bar is
A women's bar, invented in the 1990s for women's Olympic weightlifting competition, is a bar that is:
- 15kg (33 pounds)
- 25mm in diameter on the grip portion (this is slightly thinner than power bars and men's Olympic bars)
- not knurled in the very center (knurling is that sort of diamond pattern of scratch marks that gives the bar some roughness to help with grip)
- The same distance between the collars as power bars and men's Olympic bars, and thus fits just fine on standard squat racks
- Shorter in the sleeves, making it shorter overall
- Very whippy, meaning it bends and bounces more easily than power bars and men's Olympic bars
Here is the IWF specification for women's bars, complete with measurements.
(Technically the sport of the snatch and clean and jerk is called "weightlifting", but here I'll be calling it Olympic or Olympic style weightlifting to try to keep things clear.)
What are the other kinds of barbells?
- Power bars are a general purpose bar used in powerlifting and strength training. (example.) They weigh either 45lb or 20kg and the grip portion is usually 29mm in diameter, but this may vary. They are suitable for squat, bench press, and deadlift for people of all genders. Some powerlifting organizations, like USAPL, use this type of bar for all lifts in competition. If you want a general purpose bar for your home gym, get one of these.
- Men's Olympic bars are similar to power bars, but designed specifically for the men's division of Olympic weightlifting competition. (IWF specifications here.) They weigh 20kg and are fairly whippy. (Not as whippy as a women's bar, but more whippy than most power bars). The grip portion is 28mm in diameter. If you see one of these at your local gym you will probably not be able to tell it apart from a power bar, and that's fine.
- Deadlift bars are used specifically for deadlifts. They are usually 20kg and the grip portion is 27mm (thinner than a power bar, thicker than a women's bar). They are usually longer than power bars and are quite bendy. The knurling is so aggressive it hurts.
- Squat bars are the opposite of a deadlift bar. They are extra thick and extra stiff and usually weigh 25kg/55lbs.
- Curl bars and other small bars are like mini barbells and usually have the same grip diameter as a power bar. Some are 25 pounds, some are 35, others may be different nonstandard sizes.
- Miscellaneous There are bazillions of other specialty bars (trap bars, SSBs, etc) not relevant to this discussion.
In a commercial gym, the kind with cardio machines and personal trainers, you'll typically find power bars for use in squat and bench racks, and shorter bars like curl bars that are used for accessories. Women's bars are not a typical offering.
In a powerlifting gym you will probably find power bars, deadlift bars, squat bars, and like a million different specialty bars. Again, women's bars aren't usually available, because they're for a different sport.

Even if you don't care about the whip or the grip, you'll want to train on the bar you compete with. If you sign up for a weightlifting meet and you're in the women's division, the bar that's waiting for you on the platform when they call your name will be a women's bar.

Strongman competitions typically use a deadlift bar, power bar, or axle. I'm not aware of any organization outside of weightlifting or Crossfit that uses different bars for men and women in competition.
So if you want to get good at deadlifts,
practice on the bar(s) you will use in competition. If you don't compete in the deadlift, or if you just like to fuck around, you can use whatever the hell bar you want.
You don't NEED a women's bar for deadlifts
Ok, here's a pet peeve of mine. If a woman says they have trouble with their grip on deadlifts or other exercises, or especially if they have trouble hook gripping, somebody will suggest they use a women's bar. I don't think it's a good idea to seek out or recommend a women's bar for this reason.
Mainly because it can lead to an incorrect belief that other bars are "men's bars" and inappropriate for women's hands. Remember that most strength sports use the same bar for men and women. Yes, you can use the same bar as the bros. Also, the only bar properly called "men's" is the Olympic weightlifting one. Power bars and deadlift bars are gender neutral.
The thin grip on women's bars is specifically to allow more people to
hook grip the bar. Hook grip, where the thumb is tucked (somewhat painfully) underneath the fingers, is genuinely
slightly more difficult for
some people with
very small hands.
Here is an article discussing the specific question of how small your hands have to be to be unable to effectively hook grip a men's Olympic bar. The smallest thumbs in their sample of champion male Chinese weightlifters were 5.5 centimeters. I measured my own thumbs and if I'm measuring correctly (tbh I'm not 100% sure), mine are about 6 cm. My large husband's thumbs are almost 7 cm. My nine year old child has thumbs that are 5 cm, so we did some tests.
Here is a photo of each of our hands gripping a men's and a women's Olympic bar. And
here is the same set of photos but with hook grip. He had never hook gripped before, but was game to try. These photos were taken with bars in a rack, hence the weird wrist positions. But you can see that we can both comfortably grip the bar. To make sure that this wasn't just wishful thinking,
I had him actually lift the men's bar, with both hook grip and no-hook mixed grip. He lifted the bar no problem and said his grip felt fine. (He has, in the past, done an over-bodyweight deadlift on a men's bar. He was younger then and his hands were even smaller. Grip was not an issue then either.)
So what about that 5.5cm benchmark? That was for weightlifters doing snatches. Snatches require a wide grip, making it harder to hook grip a heavy snatch than a plain ol deadlift. Things like the position of your shoulders can make a difference and give you more room to play with.
Importantly, hook grip is a skill that must be learned. I used to think I "couldn't" hook grip on a men's bar. Then I went to a weightlifting gym and learned to hook grip on a women's bar. Later--get this--it turned out I could hook grip just fine on a men's bar. The problem wasn't the size of the bar at all, but simply the fact that I hadn't figured it out yet.
What to do if you have small hands and your grip sucks
Let's assume you just want to do normal deadlifts, rows, etc. You don't care about hook grip. But you have a hard time holding on. What else can you do besides switch to a women's bar?
- Use chalk. Chalk dries up moisture on your skin (from sweat, for example) and gives a more secure grip.
- Use mixed grip. This means one hand has the palm toward you, and one has the palm facing away.
- Consider practicing with a women's bar or deadlift bar to get a better sense of how to use your hands, then go back to your regular bar and try to grip it the same way.
- Use straps. Don't listen to people who say they're bad or cheating or whatever. They're a tool and this is an appropriate use. If your lifts don't feel as strong or as comfortable with straps, you're probably using them wrong.
- TRAIN YOUR GRIP. This is especially important if you use straps. Straps and grip training complement each other really well. With these two you will be unstoppable.
There is a really good deadlift grip routine at
griptraining, as well as a basic routine that covers multiple types of grip. If you aren't training your grip, you should, and it's really easy to work into your regular workout routine.

Myths about women's bars: lightning round
Myth: Women's bars are good for beginners because they're lighter. False: they don't exist for this reason and they're only 5kg (11 pounds) lighter. If you can lift a women's bar but not a men's bar, that is a temporary situation. In probably a few weeks you will be able to lift the men's bar. If your gym has a 25lb curl bar, a 33lb women's bar, and a bunch of 45lb power bars, then sure, work your way up. But if you're outfitting a home gym, do not buy a women's bar just because you're not ready for a power bar. You'll outgrow it immediately.
Myth: Women's bars are 35 pounds. Nope, they're 33. You can round that to 35 in your training journal, but I want you to know the truth.
Myth: Any 35lb bar is a women's bar. No! There are 35lb bars that have the same grip thickness as a power bar and are usually shorter and stiffer than a women's bar. These are a different thing entirely.
Myth: women's bars don't fit in a standard rack, or they are annoyingly short. Nope, that's not a women's bar! Women's bars have the same distance between the collars as a men's or power bar and fit on the same racks. The difference in length is only on the sleeves (the part where you load the plates).
Myth: this bar at my gym that's a little thinner than the others is a women's bar. Women's bars are not only thinner, they are shorter overall. Instead of being about 7 feet long (220 cm), they are about 6.5 feet (201 cm). If you aren't sure if you're looking at a women's bar, put it next to a power bar or men's bar. It will be obviously shorter. (Another quick tip: if it has center knurling, it's not a women's bar.) - Miscellaneous There are bazillions of other specialty bars (trap bars, SSBs, etc) not relevant to this discussion.

Croatian historian, Milan von Šufflay (1879-1931), was born in Lepoglava, southwest of Varaždin, and studied history and classical philology at the University of Zagreb. From 1904 to 1908, he worked for the national museum in Budapest and, from 1912 to 1918, was professor for medieval history in Zagreb. Šufflay was forced into early retirement for political reasons in 1918 and lived thereafter as a publisher in Zagreb. He was often in open political conflict with the new Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and, in 1921, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. In 1928, he was offered the chair of southeast European history at the University of Budapest, but the government in Belgrade refused to let him accept the position. He was murdered by two Serb police agents in 1931.
Among Šufflay’s publications of Albanian interest, mention may be made of “Povijest severnih Arbanasa” (History of the Northern Albanians), Belgrade 1924, “Städte und Burgen Albaniens hauptsächlich während des Mittelalters” (The Towns and Fortresses of Albania, Primarily during the Middle Ages), Vienna 1924; and “Srbi i Arbanasi: njihova simbioza u srednjem vjeku” (Serbs and Albanians: Their Symbiosis during the Middle Ages), Belgrade 1925; as well as numerous articles. Together with Ludwig von Thallóczy and Konstantin Jireček, he published the important two-volume collection of Albanian historical documents entitled “Acta et diplomata res Albaniae mediae aetatis illustrantia” (Acts and Diplomatic Affairs illustrating the Middle Ages in Albania), Vienna 1913, 1918, covering the years 344 to 1406 A.D.
The present article was first published in a Viennese newspaper in November 1912, at a time when Serb forces had conquered Kosovo and occupied much of Albania. In it, Šufflay paints a picture of Albania in the Middle Ages with a view to showing that Serbia had no historical claim to the country.
In order to justify Serb claims to Albania, in particular to the ports of Durazzo [Durrës] and Alessio [Lezha], Serb politicians bring forth primarily historical arguments. According to Pašić and Gruić, Albania has no right to autonomy, the Albanian Malissors are actually Serbs, Albania belonged solely to the Empire of Dushan, and Durrës, Lezha and San Giovanni di Medua [Shëngjin] were formerly only Serb ports. To put it briefly, all of Europe should be aware that the Serbs want only that part of Albania that they once possessed exclusively.
It is not my purpose here to investigate the psychological reasons for the preference for history which southern Slav politicians seem to have, nor to examine and criticise the curious justifications construed by the southern Slavs for their historical claims. Nor do I wish to delve into the issue of the extent to which historical factors should be taken into consideration in the coming division of European Turkey. The purpose of these lines is to draw an objective picture of Albania in the Middle Ages (before the arrival of the Turks) so that it is obvious to everyone: 1) that the Serbs are not the only ones who could raise historical claims to Albania, 2) that there were moments in Albanian history that speak in favour of annexation and others that speak in favour of Albanian autonomy, 3) that Serb politicians would have done better not to mention a historical claim to the main Albanian port of Durrës that they intend to conquer.
Mediaeval and modern Albania cannot be defined in rigid geographical terms. Initially (up to the 13th century), the word Albania was associated with a small territory around the castle of Kruja. It gradually spread to include Vlora and the mountains of Himara to the south, and Antivari [Bar] and even Cattaro [Kotor] to the north. In writings on history, Albania then became a conventional term to refer to the rectangular mountainous territory between Bar, Prizren, Ohrid and Valona [Vlora]. This is a region in which the original ethnic strata (Illyrians, Thracians) were almost entirely submerged under new formations of Greeks, Romans and Slavs, like ivy spreading over the granite monuments of a formerly great nation, the Illyrians. The word Albania had been used to describe the middle of this rectangle since ancient Illyrian times. The capital of these tribes was the town of Albanopolis (mentioned by Ptolemy), from where the term spread in the second half of the Middle Ages as a result of the brimming expansion of Albanian mountain herdsmen in scattered, but ethnically homogeneous groups to create modern Albania out of the Arbanon of the Byzantines, the Raban of the Serbs, the Regnum Albaniae of the Angevins, and the Albania of the Dalmatians and Venetians. It was a primarily ethnographical term, though its southern confine was difficult to pinpoint.

Coloured postcard of Durrës, ca. 1913 This region was always a borderland par excellence, a frontier between languages, religions and political powers. It was a product of east and west, a fusion of the ports of the Latins and the Greeks, or an amalgamation of the Roman and the Byzantine worlds, that was in direct contact with the barbarians - the autochthonous Albanians and the advancing Slavs. Here we encounter chieftains of the Albanian tribes who, side by side, bore Byzantine titles such as protosebastos and sebastos, the Latin titles comes and miles, Slavic titles such as kaznac and vojevoda. The Durrës region was the point of contact between the three mediaeval languages of administration and official documents: Latin, Greek and Slavic. Even today, all kinds of Balkan costumes are to be found in the Vilayet of Shkodra: Greek, Romanian-Bulgarian, Bosnian-Dalmatian and Serbian-Montenegrin. Catholicism was in a perpetual struggle here with Orthodoxy. The Orthodox Metropolitan of Durrës took part in the synods in Constantinople, whereas his suffragan, the Bishop of Kruja, served in the interior of the country as a confident of the pope during the revolt of the Albanian princes against the schismatic king of the Serbs (1319). The allegiances of Albanian dynasties often fluctuated between the two churches, and later between Catholicism and Islam.
It is therefore no wonder in the age of Byzantium that, as this region was susceptible to both eastern and western designs, the Theme of Dyrrhachion became a focal point for schemes and military endeavours undertaken against the Slavs to the northeast and against Italy. For this reason, too, mediaeval Albania almost always served as a base of operations for the western powers to attack Byzantium. The Normans and the Neapolitans also focussed their attacks here. When Europe, under Pope John XXII, was envisaging a crusade against Palestine, the Archbishop of Antivari, the Dominican Guillelmus Adae, a visionary of western thinking, was compiling political observations in his Directorium ad passagium faciendum (1332), in which Albania was to play no insignificant role. Thus, over a hundred years before Scanderbeg’s memorable struggle against the Turks, the minds of many thinkers in Europe were attracted now and again to the strategic importance of Albania. It was only in the age of Scanderbeg, whose uprising was followed throughout Europe with great interest and was indeed actively supported, that people became more generally aware of Albania’s significance. The country became famous, due to its geographical position. Scanderbeg’s struggle was a borderland epic, the final cantos of which are still being sung.
But Albania is more than just a borderland. It is, in fact, the quintessence of the Balkans, a land that evinces all its Latin, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Italian and Slavic nuances. Here we can still come across ancient features that reflect the early ethnic composition of the Balkan Peninsula and that gave rise to the common characteristics of the Balkan languages and peoples in the Middle Ages.
Many of the above-mentioned characteristics of mediaeval Albania are to be found in the country today – a borderland and a quintessence of the Balkans, ethnic and cultural features that speak historically for the country’s autonomy and independence.
Even the political history of pre-Turkish Albania offers us a number of points that could be interpreted as the nucleus of an autonomous or independent State. Firstly, the eleventh-century Byzantine Theme of Dyrrhachion, ruled over by a Dux, was transformed by the Venetians (1204) into the Ducatus Dyrrhachii and by the Angevins (around 1272) into a Regnum Albaniae. Scanderbeg’s war made the concept of an independent Albania known throughout Europe, and there are indications that the idea of a Regnum Albaniae was still present on Albanian soil in the 17th century. Secondly, in the 13th century an Albanian dynasty (Principes) arose in and around Kruja (1200 to 1250). It carried on for several generations (Progon, Gin, Demetrius, Golem) and, although it was submerged (perhaps only to our eyes) under pressure from foreign powers, it resurfaced immediately on the collapse of the Serb empire and took on new names (Thopias, Dukagjini etc.).
Though it must be said, in general, that historians never viewed today's Albania as a unified political State, it is also true that history acknowledges at the same time that it belonged to two or three larger unified States, such that, from a historical perspective, none of the modern powers can lay an exclusive claim to Albania.

Serb postcard, ca. 1913 The fluctuation of the various spheres of power in mediaeval Albania can best be understood by following the political rise and fall of individual Albania towns. It would perhaps require too much data to create a detailed graph of such developments. Suffice it to note here that northern Albania with the town of Scutari [Shkodra] was under Serb rule, as were its much-visited port of Saint Sergius, S. Serzi [Shirq] at the mouth of the Boyana [Buna], and the settlements of Antivari, Dulcigno [Ulqin], Svač, and Drivast [Drisht] from the 11th to the 15th centuries in one form or another, as Regnum Diocliae, as part of the kingdom of the young kings (reges iuniores) and a possession of the king’s spouse, and later under the Montenegrin family Balšić. At the same time, central Albania around Durrës (in 1040 the town was temporarily in the hands of the Bulgarians) and southern Albania around Vlora were initially under Byzantine rule, then for a short time (1204 to 1213) under Venice, and then under the Despots of Epirus, who gave these towns to Manfred of Sicily in 1258 as a dowry, until in 1272, they came under the sway of the Angevin kings of Naples. Dushan, king of Serbia, was able to conquer all of the interior of Albania and the town of Kruja in 1343, as well as Vlora and Janina in the south, but Durrës itself remained in the hands of the Angevins (at that time, Durrës was under the nominal rule of King Louis of Hungary). In 1368, Durrës fell, though not to the Serbs, but to the Albanian dynasty of Charles Thopia. Later, though only for a brief period, Durrës was in the possession of Thopia’s enemies, the Balšić family, and in 1385 Balša II bore the title of Duke of Durrës. In 1392, however, Durrës was surrendered to Venice, not by the Balšić, but by George Thopia. In 1396, the Balšić dynasty offered to Venice the towns of Shkodra and Drivast. The republic wondered for a while whether its acceptance of these towns would violate its peace agreement with Hungary (si intromittendo dicta loca contrafaceremus paci Hungariae). Lezha, of whose earlier fate we know little, fluctuated in the second half of the 14th century between Serb and Albanian rule, but then fell, like Durrës, to Venice, not out of the hands of the Serbs but of the Albanian dynasty of Dukagjini. Later, it was in the possession of the Castriota, who in origin and custom were certainly not Serbs. The only town that fell to the Turks (1417) directly from the Serbs, as a relic from the time of Dushan, was Vlora (Medua is little referred to in source material before the time of Scanderbeg as it was not much used as a harbour in the Middle Ages). The only town that actually never belonged to the Serbs was Durrës, the port of which is now claimed by the Serbs for historical reasons!

The basic idea of harmonic radar is to broadcast a radio signal at one frequency and a tiny diode downrange will rebroadcast the signal's second harmonic. This allows very tiny (around 30 mg) passive tracking tags that can be mounted on larger flying insects like bees. The same idea is used in technical surveillance countermeasures and mine/IED countermeasures to find electronics, powered on or off, and are also known as non-linear junction detectors. You can get the special "zero bias diodes", like the Agilent HSMS-2855, on eBay that are needed as powerless tags at around $0.60 each.

I will go through the "miracles" on the website 19miracle.org:
Miracle 19 Fact #1. The first verse (1:1), known as “Basmalah,” consists of 19 letters (Basmalah: image with letters marked).
Muhammad was illiterate, the Arabic letters are not a part of the revelation, they were made up later. And the number of letter depends on how you write it. Arabic writing has a problem that it doesn't write vowels. If they were smarter when designing Arabic writing, they would include vowels and the letter count would be higher. And in the case of basmala, the first word بسم has inconsistent spelling. Because in the verse 96:1, the same word is spelled as باسم. How do you know which spelling is right? If we chose the second which is equivalent, basmala would have 20 letters. Also the word الرحمن would be written as الرحمان in today's Arabic script. The alifs are a mess even within the Quran (see
Spelling Inconsistencies in the Quran).
Miracle 19 Fact #2. The Quran consists of 114 suras, which is …………..19 x 6.
Today's canonized Quran has 114 suras, but Muhammad's companions didn't know whether sura 9 (tawba aka baraa) is its own sura or only a continuation of sura 8 (anfal):
When an Ayah was revealed, he would say: "Put this Ayah in the Surah which mentions this and that in it." Now Al-Anfal was among the first of those revealed in Al-Madinah, and Bara'ah among the last of those revealed of the Qur'an, and its narrations (those of Bara'ah) resembled its narrations (those of Al-Anfal), so we thought that it was part of it. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) died, and it was not made clear to us whether it was part of it. So it is for this reason that we put them together without writing Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim between them, and we put that with the seven long (Surahs).'" - Tirmidhi Vol. 5, Book 44, Hadith 3086 - hasan
If sura 9 is just a continuation of sura 8, then the Quran has only 113 suras.
Miracle 19 Fact #3. The total number of verses in the Quran is 6346, or ….19 x 334.
The number of verses is not established, because Muhammad didn't specify clearly where verse ends and a new one starts, so the numbering is man-made. And the number 6346 goes against a
fatwa on islamweb:
The numbers of the verses of Qur'an are a little more than 6200. All the scholars of Islam are agreed on the number 6200 but they differ regarding the remaining small number.Some say 4 verses. Others say fourteen. Others say nineteen. Others say twenty-five. Others say thirty-five or thirty-six.The reason for this disagreement is that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) used to stop after reading the verse as to teach his companions the beginning and end of the verses.Some of them would consider any stop a beginning of a verse. Others would consider the stop only a breath and would link what preceded it to what follows it.Another reason for these differences is the lack of agreement on whether the Basmalah (Bismillahi Al-Rahmani Al-Rahim) is a verse of every Surah (chapter) or whether it was put there for its Baraka (blessing). al-Shafia consider it a verse of every Surah.
Miracle 19 Fact #4. The Basmalah occurs 114 times, despite its conspicuous absence from Sura 9 (it occurs twice in Sura 27) & 114= 19x6.
As was mentioned in the previous fatwa, it's not clear whether basmala is even a part of the revelation. If it was clearly a part of it, then it would be verse number 1 in all suras.
Miracle 19 Fact #5. From the missing Basmalah of Sura 9 to the extra Basmalah of Sura 27, there are precisely ……………19 suras.

Miracle 19 Fact #6. It follows that the total of the sura numbers from 9 to 27 (9+10+11+12+…+26+27) is 342, or ………….19 x 18.
It's not 19x19, so Allah failed in the second number.
Miracle 19 Fact #7. This total (342) also equals the number of words between the two Basmalahs of Sura 27, and 342 = ……..19 x 18.
The first basmala is not a verse. It's just a thing written above verse 1.
And looking at their counting list, there are corruptions in the counting. In verse 1 they don't count they mystery letters Taa Siin. Which is questionable. But a worse thing is in the verse
27:18 where they inconsistently count two words لا يحطمنكم as one word while they count لا يشعرون as two words. So the word لا meaning "not" is counted as a part of the verb يحطمنكم but when it occurs with the verb يشعرون it's counted as a separate word. In verse 25 they also count two words as one word.. I don't even feel need to check the rest. This is not an innocent mistake, but obvious intentional deception. They hope that nobody will check it.
Miracle 19 Fact #8. The famous first revelation (96:1-5) consists of …….19 words.
Deception again. The "18th word" is actually two words ما لم ("what not"). You can see on
https://quran.com/96/5 they are separate.
Miracle 19 Fact #9. This 19-worded first revelation consists of 76 letters .19 x 4.
It's not 19 worded. And yes it has 76 letters - but I'm not impressed by it.
Miracle 19 Fact #10. Sura 96, first in the chronological sequence, consists of …. 19 verses.
The numbering is man-made, but yes.
Miracle 19 Fact #11. This first chronological sura is placed atop the last ..19 suras.
So you're counting from 114 down? That's gymnastics. It's sura 96 and 96 is not divisible by 19. Allah failed.
Miracle 19 Fact #12. Sura 96 consists of 304 Arabic letters, and 304 equals .19 x 16.
Lol. Basmala is
verse number 0?? I haven't heard of verse number 0 in the Quran. And it's inconsistent with previous "miracles" that didn't count basmala as a verse. For example in miracle 10, if we add
verse 0 (basmala), then the number of verses is 20.
Besides that, the counting of letters seems to be correct. But only in the Hafs variant. For example in verse 96:9 (and 96:13), there is a variant reading, where Hafs says أَرَءَيتَ which has 5 letters, but
Warsh says أَرَٰٓيْتَ which has only 4 letters. So Allah failed in some of his other variants. In general, counting letters and words cannot be taken seriously unless it takes into consideration all qira'at.
Miracle 19 Fact #13. The last revelation (Sura 110) consists of …………19 words.
Fatwa on IslamQA says:
There is no proven hadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which states which was the last soorah of the Qur’aan to be revealed. This is why the Sahaabah differed and each of them said what his ijtihaad led him to.
Also why don't you add the four words from verse zero (basmala)?
Miracle 19 Fact #14. The first verse of the last revelation (110:1) consists of …….. 19 letters.
It's not established that sura 110 is the last revelation. And if it was, then why are we counting the first verse of it? Wouldn't it be more natural to wonder about last verse of the last revelation? The last verse 110:3 has
30 letters. Allah failed again. He's a complete loser.
Miracle 19 Fact #15. 14 different Arabic letters, form 14 different sets of “Quranic Initials” (such as A.L.M. of 2:1), and prefix 29 suras. These numbers add up to 14+14+29 = 57 = ……19 x 3.
So
14 letters, and
14 sets? Allah failed again to have 19. And the added numbers in this case are too unrelated. I don't know why would you add these numbers, except as a part of numerical gymnastics.
Miracle 19 Fact #16. The total of the 29 sura numbers where the Quranic Initials occur is 2+3+7+…+50+68 = 822, and 822+14 (14 sets of initials) equals 836, or …………….. 19 x 44.
What? You must be really desperate to add these unrelated numbers. And "
29 sura numbers" failed to be 19. And "
14 sets of initials" failed to be 19. You should be leaving Islam at this point.
Miracle 19 Fact #17. Between the first initialed sura (Sura 2) and the last initialed sura (Sura 68) there are 38 un-initialed suras 19 x 2.
The sura numbering is man-made. Muhammad never said that Baqara is sura number 2. And why are we counting this specific count? If we talk about initiated suras, wouldn't it be most straight forward to count the number of initiated suras? The number of suras which start with mysterious letters is
29. It's not 19 and not even divisible by 19. Absolute failure.
Miracle 19 Fact #18. Between the first and last initialed sura there are ….19 sets of alternating “initialed” and “un-initialed” suras.
"Sets" of suras between the first and last man-made numbers? It would be more straight forward to just count the suras. And there are 29 initiated suras and 85 (114-29) non-initiated suras. None of it is divisible by 19.
Miracle 19 Fact #19. The Quran mentions 30 different numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 19, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 99, 100, 200, 300, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000, 50000, & 100000. The sum of these numbers is 162146, which equals 19x8534.
The numbers 300 and 9 are based on the verse 18:25:
They had remained in their cave for three hundred years, adding nine.
It could be also interpreted as 300 and 309.
And 1000 and 50 is derived from verse 29:14 which could be interpreted as saying 950:
And We certainly sent Noah to his people, and he remained among them a thousand years minus fifty years, and the flood seized them while they were wrongdoers.
And some numbers are mentioned many times, so why don't we count every instance as another number and then add all of it? But ok, let's count every number only once. So we've found that there are
30 different numbers mentioned. And 30 is not divisible by 19. Fail.
Miracle 19 Fact #20. By counting the letter “Q” in every “Verse 19” throughout the Quran, the total count comes to 76, 19×4. Here is a summary of the Q-related data
Whaat. Arabic alphabet has 28 letters so you have a lot of chances that some of them will have something to do with 19.
Miracle 19 Fact #21 NuN (Noon) This initial is unique; it occurs in one sura, 68, and the name of the letter is spelled out as three letters — Noon Wow Noon — in the original text and is therefore counted as two N’s. The total count of this letter in the N-initialed sura is 133, 19×7. The fact that “N” is the last Quranic Initial (see Table 1) brings out a number of special observations. For example, the number of verses from the first Quranic Initial (A.L.M. of 2:1) to the last initial (N. of 68:1) is 5263, or 19×277. The word “God” (Allah) occurs 2641 (19×139) times between the first initial and the last initial. Since the total occurrence of the word “God” is 2698, it follows that its occurrence outside the initials “A.L.M.” of 2:1 on one side, and the initial “N” of 68:1 on the other side, is 57, 19×3. Tables 9 to 18 prove that the initial “NuN” must be spelled out to show two N’s.
Where is the original text of the Quran? Btw. Nun is the whale that carries the (flat) earth on its back according to Ibn Abbas. If the letter is written only once in verse 68:1, then it should be counted only once.
Sura 68 is not the last sura with initials in revelation order. It's second Meccan sura.
Number of verses is not established among scholars.
So you're counting the word Allah "between first initial and last initial", because simply counting the word Allah would result in failure? Ok, I'll look. I've found on
Arabic website that Allah in the form الله occurs 2395 times, which fails to be divisible by 19. And if we count other forms of the word (with prefixes), then 2699 times, which fails to be divisible by 19. So that's a double fail for Allah.
Oh, but you're saying that total occurences are 2698? Ok. Here's a complete list of 2699 occurrences:

And ilah ("a god") is mentioned 147 times, which is again not divisible by 19. And if we count all words from the same root Allah (1699) and ilah (147) and Allahumma (5) we get 2851 which again completely fails to be divisible by 19.
And I'm stressing again that you lied that the word Allah occurs 2698 times to make it divisible by 19. It was A LIE!!!!!
Miracle 19 Fact # 22. S (Saad) This initial prefixes three suras, 7, 19, and 38, and the total occurrence of the letter “S” (Saad) in these three suras is 152, 19×8 (namely 97, 26 and 29 per Table 2). It is noteworthy that in 7:69, the word “Bastatan” is written in some printings with a “Saad,” instead of “Seen.” This is an erroneous distortion that violates the Quran’s code. By looking at the oldest available copy of the Quran, the Tashkent Copy, it was found that the word “Bastatan” is correctly written with a “Seen” (see photocopy).
Hmm, so other qira'at in 7:69 are errors? I thought that all qira'at are mutawaatira, perfectly memorized by thousands of people from the mouth of the prophet. But you say that a difference in qira'at can be a case of corruption? Okay.
And
Tashkent Quran is from the 8th-9th century, so we can't be sure it says what Muhammad said in the 7th century.
Miracle 19 Fact # 23. Historical Note: The momentous discovery that “19” is the Quran’s common denominator became a reality in January 1974, coinciding with Zul-Hijjah 1393 A.H. The Quran was revealed in 13 B.H. (Before Hijrah). This makes the number of years from the revelation of the Quran to the revelation of its miracle 1393 + 13 = 1406 = 19×74. As noted above, the unveiling of the Miracle took place in January 1974. The correlation between 19×74 lunar years and 1974 solar years could not escape notice. This is especially uncanny in view of the fact that “19” is mentioned in Sura 74.
In
this video from 4:38, Shabir Ally explains that the author of the 19 thing was
Rashad Khalifa. And that some of his countings were wrong. Rashad Khalifa also said that he's god's messenger which is unacceptable. He was also born on 19th november. I guess he wanted to make his birthday special. And his Wikipedia also says that he published his book
Miracle of the Quran: Significance of the Mysterious Alphabets in 1973, not 1974, so the miracle failed. I feel sorry for Rashad Khalifa, he probably just wanted to feel special.
Miracle 19 Fact # 24. Miracle 19 Fact # 23. Y. S. (Ya Seen) These two letters prefix Sura 36. The letter “Y” occurs in this sura 237 times, while the letter “S” (Seen) occurs 48 times. The total of both letters is 285, 19×15. It is noteworthy that the letter “Y” is written in the Quran in two forms; one is obvious and the other is subtle. The subtle form of the letter may be confusing to those who are not thoroughly familiar with the Arabic language. A good example is the word “Araany which is mentioned twice in 12:36. The letter “Y” is used twice in this word, the first “Y” is subtle and the second is obvious. Sura 36 does not contain a single “Y” of the subtle type. This is a remarkable phenomenon, and one that does not normally occur in a long sura like Sura 36.

Eli Lilly's antibody treatment, bamlanivimab, receives emergency FDA approval (11/9).

Six months ago, the first vaccine was tested. More than 160 vaccine prototypes are being tested. Clinical trials of the vaccine were administered three months ago. Phase 1 & 2 of trial vaccines have completed with positive antibody results. Phase 3 clinical trials started with 30k volunteers; large test size of 3k vaccine test trials in the UK. Africa started their vaccine trials four months ago. Multiple sources stating to expect an FDA approved vaccine by beginning of next year.
Of the 100+ vaccines submitted, 22 have made the cut to go through testing and final FDA approval phases (5/15 briefing). The
front runner vaccine is conducting human trails (Phase 3 aka final stage), completion date is pending. AstraZeneca is prepared to produce 2 billion doses once the vaccine is FDA approved. Pfizer claims
their vaccine is more than 95% effective; goal end of the year.
Moderna vaccine claims about 94.5% effective. Expected US authorization for Pfizer and Moderna along with distribution approval is expected within
24hrs of regulatory approval (note: they currently have 20M doses ready; vaccine is a two stage dose).
US government is working with four vaccine manufacturers who are in the final phases of vaccine trials, all prepared for massive vaccine output once FDA approval is given.

SNHD confirmed they are not counting COVID-19 antibody positives into their COVID-19 positive case counts. Majority of information is pulled from
Southern Nevada Health District's COVID-19 dashboard and

Doctors are doing convalescent plasma therapy treatments and are seeking plasma donors to help those in need. One plasma donation can help five patients. Blood donors can get the antibodies testing done for free.
FDA states 144 trials of therapeutics are underway to treat COVID-19. 457 more are in planning stages. Remdesivir has been FDA approved as a COVID-19 treatment (10/22). Despite
recent studies showing that Remdesivir do not help in preventing COVID-19 deaths. Dexamethaaone is FDA approved for emergency base use.
Eli Lilly's antibody treatment, bamlanivimab, receives emergency FDA approval (11/9).
Nevada has been approved for the 24-hour test procedure. FDA has approved a 30-minute and a 5-minute testing procedures. UNLV provides the main COVID-19 testing services. The first at-home testing kit was FDA approved on 5/15.
If you live within a 1-mile range of the Wal-Mart on Craig Rd, you qualify for a
drone-delivered test kit to your front or back door.
Some testing sites require an appointment; some may need to be scheduled by your primary care physician or another authorized provider.

https://cityservelv.org/ The antibodies test was approved by the FDA a month ago. UMC, E7 Health and local laboratories are able to conduct antibodies testing. Cost is normally $149+, but your insurance may reimburse you for the test. Check your coverage first.
Vitalant/Universal Blood Services will do a free antibody test for any eligible donors.
UMC is able to process 4,000 tests per day. It is encouraged for anyone to be tested. Symptoms are no longer required. Appointment is preferred, walk-up testing is available.
UMC's testing sites are inside Thomas & Mack Center and Cashman Field Center. They can do 1,200 tests per day, Tues-Sat 8am to 4pm. No symptoms, insurance, or citizenship required for testing. Schedule an appointment online through UMC's website (
www.umcsn.com). A staff member will contact you back to schedule your appointment. According to their reps, there is no limit how often you can get tested. Sites are walk-in, appointment or walk-up. Both sites now use the self-nasal swab test kits.
UMC updates COVID-19 test guidelines:
- After positive test, no follow-up test is needed after 10 day isolation period
- If employer requires a negative test in order for employee to return to work, then employer provides the test
New guidelines are to save test kits for those exhibiting symptoms.

All CVS pharmacy drive-thru locations also does testing, no cost should be associated with this test. Validate with your insurance. If no insurance, there should be no charge. Requires an appointment scheduled.
Six months ago, the first vaccine was tested. More than 160 vaccine prototypes are being tested. Clinical trials of the vaccine were administered three months ago. Phase 1 & 2 of trial vaccines have completed with positive antibody results. Phase 3 clinical trials started with 30k volunteers; large test size of 3k vaccine test trials in the UK. Africa started their vaccine trials four months ago. Multiple sources stating to expect an FDA approved vaccine by beginning of next year.
Of the 100+ vaccines submitted, 22 have made the cut to go through testing and final FDA approval phases (5/15 briefing). The
front runner vaccine is conducting human trails (Phase 3 aka final stage), completion date is pending. AstraZeneca is prepared to produce 2 billion doses once the vaccine is FDA approved. Pfizer claims
their vaccine is more than 95% effective; goal end of the year.
Moderna vaccine claims about 94.5% effective. Expected US authorization for Pfizer and Moderna along with distribution approval is expected within
24hrs of regulatory approval (note: they currently have 20M doses ready; vaccine is a two stage dose).
US government is working with four vaccine manufacturers who are in the final phases of vaccine trials, all prepared for massive vaccine output once FDA approval is given.
Worldwide, six are in Phase III.

2:06 PM: The Governor begins speaking
I'm continuing to wear ties that represent the colleges and universities in our state.
The requirements for the new stay-at-home order will be going into effect tonight. I've already seen a number of retailers working to limit the amount of people in their stores as required by the new order. Some stores are even starting to make their stores into a one-way aisle.
If someone's wearing a mask, that's a good thing. It sends a signal that we all need to keep being careful. Although it's not a substitute for social distancing, it is still helpful.
By staying home and being careful you are buying us time for our hospital buildout. We're still working on doubling our hospital capacity and supplies.
Major hospitals are already working on expanding their capacity in their own facilities and/or collaborating with other facilities. We are also working on expanding health care work into buildings that were unused. These buildings must be safe for both patients and workers. They will be used for those without COVID-19 that still need medical care. Some areas of Ohio are already prepared and will not need to buildout. Please keep working to buy us time. This is all very important.
We are working with both the public and private sector in order to ensure we have the necessary supplies. Regarding PPE, if we can find it, we're buying it. If we can't buy it, we're going to build it. We're much too reliant on foreign countries. We will have to change that after this crisis is over. Once we have our supplies we will use technology and innovation to ensure our supplies last longer. Battelle will be leading that charge with their mask sterilization program.
Jobs Ohio has pivoted to focusing on building the supply chain we need. I'd like to thank former Governor John Kasich and the state legislature for having the foresight to create Jobs Ohio.

I'd like to mention what has happened in the only federal prison in Ohio. Several inmates have tested positive with coronavirus and three have died. This was very worrying. An investigation has shown to me that they need help. Their medical staff is at 50% of what it should be. This was a facility run by the federal government. Still, this prison was in Ohio and run by staff from Ohio. Today, the Ohio National Guard will help in that prison for 7 to 10 days until the federal government can shore up their own response in the prison. This is a medical mission, they will not be armed or providing security. This is the right thing to do. I'm asking the federal government to stop sending new prisoners to that prison. We cannot release prisoners in federal prisons because I have no authority to do so.
We have 10 inmates and 26 staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 in our own prison system. We have been testing in the prisons whenever appropriate. Any time symptoms appeared, we began testing. We began screening staff nearly a month ago. I will have more information on the release of prisoners tomorrow. We will not be releasing anyone that is dangerous. We're taking a look at those who have not been violent or charged with violent crimes and are nearing release already.
If you are coming into Ohio after staying in another state, you must quarantine yourself for at least 14 days.

We have been working to sanitize our rest areas.
Truckers are having a lot of trouble getting the food they need and so my department has been working with mobile food vendors to keep them fed.
All travelers should stay at home for 14 days. This does not include truck drivers, health care workers, or those in the border regions.

The dispute resolution commission will begin operating at 11:59 PM tonight. They will be mediating disagreements within health departments as to how to enforce the essential business order. All of this information will be public. They will have a 24 turnaround time per dispute.
Small business can take special loans out that may be forgivable if they are used for payroll and some other items. Please go to your bank and take that out as soon as possible.
The amount of jobs available for applications on our website have increased from 23,000 to 29,000.
I'd like to show a map that has been going viral, showing the average amounts of travel people have been doing. Ohio and the Midwest have been doing amazing in reducing the amounts of travel their citizens have been doing. We hope that the sacrifices you're doing now will be improving our situation down the line. If you stick to this we're going to come out the other side stronger. Businesses will have to plan for restrictions to be lifted. They will still have to keep their workplace clean according to provisions in our orders.

I want to talk about recovery information for a moment. Around 80% or more of those with COVID-19 will recover from the illness while at home and not even being tested. As for those in the hospital system, we will be giving coronavirus cases a unique code. Using limited data, around 303 have recovered. We'll be working to get you updated information when possible.
In terms of race, 61% of our deaths have been white, while 25% have been black. Much of the rest of that information is highly inaccurate. We're trying to work to get this demographic information out to you.
We're still only able to test the very ill and high risk. When we have widespread testing we will be able to get better resources for everyone. We must think about the disabled and/or living in congregant communities while we continue to fight against COVID-19.

How many new beds will you be putting in your buildout sites and will they be used for coronavirus patients?
Governor: We're still in the starting phases of the buildout.
Amy Acton: I'd like to mention we are still working on our zone and regional system in order to get as prepared as possible. We're going to keep you informed even more this week as more information is prepared. The second we let up on all we've been doing, this will all collapse. Please stay home and keep social distancing.
2:59 PM: There have been models saying we are two days away from the peak use of supplies and six days away from the peak of deaths. Do you agree with those models?
Amy Acton: We've been working with the groups that made that model. Our models are based on other data that we feel is more accurate. Likely the answer will be somewhere in the middle.
3:02 PM: Is there any plan to keep our postal workers safe? It's a federal job but I was wondering if you could do anything.
Governor: I've not received any specific complaints from postal workers but I will check into that.
3:03 PM: Could you respond to claims that northern Ohio could be overwhelmed by cases from Michigan or other border states? Do we expect those from out of state to be using our hospitals?
Amy Acton: We are putting those assumptions into our plans as possible.
Some of our neighbors use hospitals in our state and that's something we're taking into consideration.
3:05 PM: Why is there a discrepancy between the models?
Amy Acton: We will be going into how our models work this week. From my estimates, the peak will occur in between the end of this month and May 5th. I know it's incredibly hard to deal with this and I know you'll look back and realize that you've saved each other after it's all over.
Governor: In each model, no matter who is doing it, there are assumptions. In each model, one main variable is social distancing. If you change the amount of social distancing even a little bit, you can get very different results. That isn't the only variable but it is a major one.
3:09 PM: People are still very worried about their family members in prisons. What assurances can you give that you are protecting them? You can't commute their sentences?
Governor: Everyone who works in prisons, everyone who has a loved one that works or is in the prison system, and everyone in prison will be kept as safe as possible. The Director of our prison system is highly educated in prison health and she has been putting stringent rules in place that has slowed the spread until very recently. We're still deciding who we can receive and under what conditions. So far our releases will rely on the final decisions of judges in the areas that they have been charged. We will be adding more to that list tomorrow. The number of prisoners coming in has also gone down. We're working on giving our prison workers the ability to keep everyone safe.
I cannot easily commute the sentences of prisoners. It would take at least 60 days before it would have any effect. We don't have 60 days.
3:15 PM: At what point should Ohioans expect to see patients at convention centers?
Amy Acton: I just noticed that all of our reporters are wearing masks. Good work. Back to the question, I would anticipate that we are still a long way away from needing to use those convention centers but we are trying to be ready for them to be necessary. These will largely be used for mildly ill patients.
3:17 PM: Do you feel that this week may be the toughest for Ohio if not all of America as the Surgeon General stated earlier this week?
Amy Acton: I think that this is going to be a tough week for everyone. This is a terrible disease and we're already seeing terrible stories in Ohio. I don't think we will peak this week but we are doing everything we can to lessen the impact of the disease on our people, our workers, and our facilities. This is impacting all of us. Double down on your commitment to protecting each other and yourselves. Own everything you can control to protect yourself and others.
3:20 PM: Could you give a brief overview of the situation in our nursing homes?
Amy Acton: These congregant settings are very vulnerable. We have teams that focus on nursing homes and they work on tracing every contact that those who test positive have had. The local communities can tell you more about the specific cases but more than 20 nursing homes have already been hit by COVID-19. We've been working on standardizing our guidelines regarding best practices for all of our nursing homes and health departments.

Key Information for travelers
Non-essential travel outside of the country has been essentially banned. If you absolutely need to travel, when you there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine period. Non-residents will not be allowed back in and symptomatic residents/citizens will also not be allowed back.
What do I do if I think I have Coronavirus
Use Ontario's self-assessment tool or this one provided by Toronto area hospitals. It'll give you information of what to do next. Generally - Step 1: Self-isolate. Step 2: If symptomatic, self-quarantine. Step 3: Report to your public health unit if you have severe symptoms, if you need to go to the ER, call ahead and let them know you may be COVID-19+. Here's some guidance on if you should visit a self-assessment centre.
What do I do if I think I have been in close contact someone who is positive or I think may have coronavirus
Exercise an abundance of caution, use common sense. Self-monitor. Self-isolate if you are actually worried. Walking by a person who is positive or talking to them for 30 seconds is not a close contact. Living in the same house could be. Caring for them definitely is.

I'd like to start off by thanking our teachers, administrators, and parents who are helping our students learn. We've never had to do something like this at such a large scale.
The Ohio Department of Education has released a remote learning resource guide with all of the best practices we have come up with during this time.
We still do not have enough tests to perform the number we wish. We need more testing and we need quicker results. The order Amy Acton gave several days ago is now showing results. Tests are getting done faster than ever before. Our major hospitals have plenty of capacity to continue analyzing tests from throughout the state. Our capacity to test has gotten bigger but we are still lacking some important supplies. Ohio State University and the Health Department are working together on getting some of those supplies for the state from manufacturers within the state. Help is on the way. We expect a better supply chain within a few days. Other teams are working on procuring the rest of the necessary supplies.'

We're doing what we need to do to build-out our capacity to ensure that our health care workers will be capable of helping all citizens of Ohio. We have seen what other states and countries have dealt with and are taking actions that will ensure we learn from what happened to them. Our regional approach will ensure that our patients will end up in hospitals rather than new structures. The new structures we are working on will be for those who are not as sick. The National Guard will be working on building partitions for buildings and transporting beds. This is an approach that involves leaders, found in political, economic, and scientific theaters. We are also working on procuring more staff to ensure that we suffer no shortages of workers. The National Guard is also working on producing food for the homeless, running PPE warehouses, and much more. Ensure you are being safe online as well.

The Director of our Prison System has done an amazing job to ensure that our prisoners are safe despite the conditions. Visits have been canceled, all staff and contractors must be screened every day, they are not accepting anyone that has exhibited any symptoms, and those who are transferred to the prison are quarantined for 30 days. We have seen problems in other states and I spoke to the director about this issue. We may be allowing early release for 38 prisoners. These are not violent prisoners. They are not sex offenders, they are not domestic abusers, and they are not murderers. We currently have 23 women who are either pregnant or had a child in prison. Judges will be making a determination as necessary. 15 prisoners are over the age of 60 and have less than 60 days before release and judges will also be making a determination for them as well. All of the normal processes will be followed.

A few hours ago I held a virtual town hall with the small business owners throughout our state along with the mayors of Columbus and other cities. The coronavirus affects both our health and economy. We have taken many steps to ensure that small businesses will be protected. The banks who are administering the small business loans that were begun in the CARE Act have received guidance and will begin giving them out after you apply. Your business must have less than 500 employees and the loan may have some aspects that will not have to be paid back, including money used for payroll.
There are still many job openings throughout the state. There is a home for veterans that is in dire need of nursing assistance and we'd appreciate if children might send letters to the veterans as well.
Battelle has decided to allow for free sanitation of masks for the next two weeks using the machines they produced that were recently approved by the FDA. Hospitals should keep in contact with them.

3,312 confirmed cases of coronavirus. 895 hospitalizations, 288 are in the ICU, 91 deaths, 628 of the infected are health care workers. 51% female are female, 49% are male. 38,375 tested in total.
We have been talking about getting our information down to the zip code rather than the county. Due to the lack of testing, it may look like a zip code is a hot spot, when it is not. Make sure that if we are capable of doing this to not be alarmed by those numbers. There are also privacy concerns we have to look into.
There is no need to stigmatize the ill. Help those around you while remaining safe.

Will prisoners be released into the parole system? Will this be safe?
Governor: We are leaving that up to the judges. We are only focusing on women who are pregnant or have children and prisoners over 60 who have less than 60 days remaining in their sentence. None of them are charged with violent crimes or have any outstanding warrants. We will be giving the media a list of the names.
2:47 PM: Do you plan on releasing any more prisoners? How useful will this be? Why not pardon these prisoners instead?
Governor: I am focusing on the specific situations of each of the prisoners. In terms of the women we have chosen, I also want to ensure that their children are safe. We are making these choices very carefully and allowing the local courts to have the final decision. That is why I am not pardoning these prisoners.
2:50 PM: Do you plan to improve eligibility for medicaid within the state? Will you procure help from the federal government to do so?
Governor: Our state is already seeing decreased revenues. We may not have enough to do anything like that.
Lieutenant Governor: We are in the process of understanding where our revenues are and where we can actually spend money. We don't yet have answers for these questions.
2:52 PM: Should sick people be told to avoid grocery store clinics? (I will have to check into this question again)
Governor: I would defer to the experts and doctors but that is an issue worth looking into.
Amy Acton: We have to remember that in some cases those clinics are the primary care points for some of our citizens. We don't want to create a barrier of access to care.
2:55 PM: What percentage of false negatives do you believe we have seen? How has that affected the spread?
Amy Acton: We do not have information on how many false negatives we have received. If you are not advanced enough into the virus you will come back as negative. That is why I am recommending that all of you should assume you are infected already.
2:57 PM: How do you plan on investing in public health while you see a decrease in revenues?
Governor: I believe we will see an increase in awareness of the importance of public health as a result of this crisis. I don't believe it will be an easy process to keep our investment in public health but we will try our best. Public health can be improved using resources for every department
Amy Acton: We must ensure that people know how public health investment affects their lives. It is clear to me that this has always been a very important aspect of governing to the Governor. After this time, we should focus on drug abuse, suicide, and other important issues. Right now our focus is on the pandemic but there are many other issues that we need to look into as time goes forward.
3:02 PM: You are looking into the supply of ventilators and hospital beds every day, right? Do you plan to put that data online as well?
Amy Acton: Yes we are still doing an inventory on all ventilators, even those that might be found in zoos or elsewhere. We plan on putting accurate information online and we have not reached a point where accuracy is high enough. There is also an issue of getting updates, as numbers can change within hours.
3:05 PM: Should we be seeing the lower deaths than projected by models as a good thing?
Amy Acton: You should always look at trend lines, which it seems you have. We will be asking our modelers to continue updating us on their information. That peak is still coming and every day we continue to socially isolate, it helps General Harris and I prepare for that. Models are still only a rough estimate and we can only get accurate models when we have accurate information on the virus. Our scientists in the background are doing everything they can.
3:08 PM: Are you planning on releasing more guidance to health departments as to what they release?
Amy Acton: We are working on that but in some cases it's just due to the fact that they are simply being investigated. We'll be sharing demographics as they become accurate and available. It is still too early at this time.
3:11 PM: Our food banks appear to be overwhelmed and requesting money from the state government, have you been looking into that request? What can you do for them?
Governor: It's concerning, we're looking at it, and we'll have something to work on that soon. It's a priority. We can't have stuff like that happen.
3:13 PM: Why is there a disconnect between what the federal government is saying and what you are saying regarding testing?
Governor: We do everything we can to expand testing. There are a lot of different variables in how much we can test. One of them relates to the turnaround time, which we have worked on rectifying. There is an issue with supply of the swabs, tubes, and chemicals necessary for tests. We're working on that as well. We have not had enough testing and that's the bottom line.
Amy Acton: There are many shortages going on right now. People are looking for people to blame. When historians look at this they're going to see so many variables. There was a lack of reagents to start with, then swabs and media. There is not a single person's job to procure all of those supplies. With how fast everything is moving, companies cannot produce enough the required machines for the demand. Everything has to be distributed equally across the states and that's the cause of our shortages. Testing is important and we must hope that by the end of this that we will be capable of using this to help with our exit strategy.
3:19 PM: How is OSU and ODH planning on working to procure the testing supplies?
Governor: It is still a process that will continue over the next several days.
3:20 PM: Should people consolidate their carry-out trips? What are some dos and don'ts regarding that?
Amy Acton: Wipe off the packaging. Businesses should continue to keep proper hygiene. Many of those businesses are also working to feed our health care workers and the poor.
3:22 PM: Medical marijuana patients are being forced to pick up their medicine directly rather than being allowed access to delivery?
Governor: I have no plans but I will look at that as soon as possible.
3:24 PM: What force of law do you have to decide what businesses remain open? Do you not have an issue with no appeal process?
Governor: This is a delegated authority. If anyone feels there is an issue with this they may question us about this.
Lieutenant Governor: We were asked by health departments to create this process.
