2024.05.22 00:26 MyCatBeatsMeWith How to better understand things being sentimental?
I’ve never really grown up with any sentimental items and currently all of my belongings can fit in a backpack. I don’t really have anything that means much to me today I went to an arcade with this girl who I really like her stuffed pig in a clam that she really wanted and a few minutes later, she won one for me as well. Fast-forward a little while and I saw a kid at the machine trying to win one of the pigs and they didn’t so I felt bad and I gave them mine. When she found out I gave it to a kid she got really upset because it was something that was special to her. I already have a really cute stuffed animal she gave me but this one was seen as different. I really have no idea how to go about this and I dont want to upset her any further :( any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Tl;dr she won me a stuffed animal at an arcade that matched with one that I won her. I saw a kid that was sad trying to win the same one so I gave them the one that my friend won me which made her feel negative.

After the first decade or so, time starts being more amorphous and operating on some cross between a timeline that develops and a stationary
Simpsons-like timeline where time doesn't really move. Some things progress, some things don't, everything is kept vague, and characters don't notice or call attention to this. Essentially, large amounts of time are zipped into small amounts of time, and both the longer and shorter time intervals between events are "correct" depending on how much we're zooming in on the timeline. For example, Kyle Rayner had a good number of years as a solo Green Lantern and Tim Drake was Robin for a solid amount of time before Hal Jordan returned and Damian Wayne showed up, but somehow, superheroes in general have only been operating for about 10 to 15 years, max. This is really the only way you can keep Batman perpetually in his 30s or 40s without having weird consequences like each Robin only holding the title for a year before he gets a new one.
So after this, I stop having specific "years" and it becomes more like "periods of time in which certain things co-occur." So there might be considerable time intervals between events, yet those events might also paradoxically be squished into some 10-15-year timeline.
The Fall of Heroes Era - The Death and Return of Superman happen.
- Superboy and Steel debut.
- Bane debuts and Knightfall happens.
- Diana is replaced by Artemis as Wonder Woman.
- Shortly after Clark and Bruce return, Hal becomes the Parallax.
- Kyle Rayner becomes Earth's Green Lantern.
- Oliver Queen dies.
- Connor Hawke becomes Green Arrow.
The Reconstruction Era - Clark Kent and Lois Lane get married.
- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Rayner), The Flash (West), Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter reform the Justice League.
- Electric Superman Blue never happened, lol.
- Robin, Superboy, and Impulse form Young Justice.
- Cataclysm, Contagion, and No Man's Land happen (sorry for having so much destruction during the reconstruction era)
- Cassandra Cain becomes Batgirl.
The Millennium Era - Obviously didn't happen around the turn of the millennium anymore because floating timeline.
- Our Worlds at War and Bruce Wayne: MurdereFugitive happen around here.
- Oliver Queen returns from the dead.
The Infinite Crisis Era - Hal Jordan and the GLC return.
- Infinite Crisis, 52, and OYL happen.
The Final Crisis Era - The War of Light (Sinestro Corps War through Blackest Night) stuff happens.
- The Black Glove/Leviathan Saga (Batman & Son through Batman Incorporated) stuff happens.
- Bruce meets Damian Wayne.
- The New Krypton stuff happens.
- Katherine Kane becomes Batwoman.
There are things I'm on the fence on, such as whether the Golden Age heroes are part of this timeline. On the one hand, I like the idea of Superman being the world's very first superhero and the public never having had encountered anything fantastical until his debut. If the JSA existed before him, then his debut would be met with "hey look, I guess flying men are back" instead of "can you BELIEVE a man can fly?!" Batman's debut also seems more striking if Gotham was never patrolled by a Green Lantern (that guy probably would have single-handedly demolished Gotham's mob in the '40s instead of letting it grow to the size it would later become).
On the other hand, I wouldn't want to jettison the cool relationships that exist between the Golden Age and later characters, like Kyle Rayner knowing Jade. I think I lean toward "keep them on Earth-2, but allow them to have regular meetings and friendships with the Earth-0 guys." But if the walls between universes are that porous, that just raises the question of why Power Girl got stuck on Earth-0 when the rest of the Earth-2 people can go home whenever they want.

2024.05.21 23:47 noobcs50 Has anybody else lost interest in gaming after learning "how the sausage is made?"
tl;dr: games like League of Legends and RuneScape (both OSRS and RS3) are "fun" mostly because of dark patterns and player manipulation, rather than because the game is "intrinsically fun."
I had a hard time playing games like League of Legends and RuneScape in moderation, until I realized how these games work.
With LoL, I used to play ranked because I wanted to see what my skill level was and how skilled I could become. But when I learned that the rank the game shows you isn't your actual skill level, it's hard to want to keep playing ranked. Ranked doesn't exist to show you what your true skill level is, so much as it exists to keep you playing. That's why your real skill level (your MMR) is hidden from you and it arbitrarily soft-resets every season.
With RS, as a kid in the 2000s it was fun because we didn't understand much about "efficiency." The game was mostly about PvP and (inefficient) skilling. PvM wasn't really a thing. Fast forward to 2024 and PvM dominates the game. PvP is mostly dead and skilling isn't rewarding anymore. It's all about PvM now. But the PvM is tied to absurd <1% RNG drop rates. So you're effectively hitting the slot machine less than 10 times per hour, hoping for a jackpot which on average requires hundreds of hits. But these RNG rates have to be absurd because otherwise players would collect all the drops too quickly and quit the game.
It feels like enjoying games like this requires an "ignorance is bliss" mentality. When you realize that these games aren't meant to be fun, as much as they're meant to be engaging (and by extension, profitable), suddenly you kind of feel like a sucker for giving them so much of your money and/or attention.

Patreon Official Subreddit Royal Road 92 Hours After the First Round of Interloper Interrogations. UNAFS Perseverance (HSR) - Shuttlecraft - 01. En Route to the New Lorisa Forests LZ. Lysara “Touching down in ten seconds.” I announced, my voice emanating from the encounter suit’s speakers in a language that, until just days ago, was an enigma.
Yet in a matter of days, this deceptively simple translation suite, a triumph of xenolinguistics, was now able to match my tone perhaps better than ever before.
Which explained exactly why Evina had responded in the way that she did. “Nervous, Lysara?” She offered in a snide, yet well-meaning jab.
I didn’t respond, not yet at least, as the last five minutes on approach were more often than not the most dangerous aspects of aeronautics; that much I learned from the pilots and armed service members I worked with over the years.
It was only after we’d touched down, and the final safety checks were complete, that I finally turned towards Evina. “I would be lying if I didn’t say I wasn’t at least a
little bit unnerved about this whole situation.” I offered, gesturing towards the back of the shuttle, as the both of us unbuckled and left our seats. The whole mission was already memorized in our minds as we’d already run through every plan and backup plan we had over the entirety of the flight time down here. “And to be quite frank, I’m surprised you’re taking this whole thing so incredibly well.” I continued, going through the final checklists on the deployment of this platoon’s worth of combat drones as I did so.
“I think we’ve long since sailed
past the point of no return the moment you told me that there was an intergalactic, eons-long war going on, Lysara.” The felinor offered with a shrug. “A bunker with potential ties with that aforementioned malevolent cosmic entity is nothing compared to
that bombshell.”
“I’d have assumed that the nature of the bunker, and this mission being issued by said interloper, would’ve been the sticking point here.” I offered, genuinely curious as to the nonchalant attitude projected by the felinor.
“Eh. When you’ve lived in the wastes for this long, you’re bound to have heard the whole
‘the aliens did it’ conspiracy more often than you’d like. Now I’m not saying I believe every wastelander with a conspiracy theory… but I can’t admit the fact that the bunker has always been something that radiates a really weird aura about it. I mean, compared to literally everything else out there in the wastes? It exists in almost this time capsule of complete isolation. The beasts that roam the area, preying on anyone that gets close, don’t really help out much in that whole weird vibe either. So yeah, ever since my first iteration tried to drill her way into it,
Far-Reach Point has been a
point of great mystery amongst the survivors of the waste. Which lends itself really well to the possibility that your alien enemies could actually be behind it.” Evina shrugged once more, before adding a cheeky self deprecating comment. “The fact that it’s been broadcasting all this time should also be a dead giveaway to be honest. Because you definitely won’t see anything felinor-made still functional without
constant maintenance after a few years into its lifespan.”
I chuckled at that statement, if only because it seemed to be made in genuine jest. “Well, we can’t say for certain that interloper tech is involved in its construction. What we
do know is that the interloper has some vested interest in the facility.” I shot back, attempting to temper the felinor’s expectations and keeping everything to the limited facts we had on hand. “Or more specifically, the
individual living within it.”
“And you got all of that just by putting two and two together huh? Your mission to
find this person-of-interest, and the weird anomaly that is this signal station.” The felinor shot back with a disquietingly critical stare.
“It’s our one and only lead.” I shrugged. “It’s either that, or we comb through every living felinor on this planet. So in light of this massive lead, my hypothesis is that our person-of-interest, is in fact, somewhere
within that facility.”
“Eh.” Evina once more shrugged. “A better conspiracy theory than the nutjobs. Or rather, good enough that I’d buy it.” She grinned, baring her teeth in the process which, at this point, I’d become accustomed to. If anything, it was after hours of ‘cat videos’, as Vir called them; that I finally started to become
accustomed to these fangy grins. Moreover, it was becoming a point of endearment more than anything.
“In any case, drones are online and ready to go.” I continued, moving the conversation out of speculation and back into action, as the rear of the shuttle opened to a charred and lifeless forest floor.
“Man, Vir really did a number to this place, didn't he?” Evina whistled out.
“I… do apologize for all of the collateral damage we’ve incurred on your world-”
“Are you kidding me?!” The felinor interjected with a devious grin. “I
hate forests! Heck, maybe it’s a carry-over from my perpetually-indoors first iteration, but forests have always been a place of danger and death lurking over every corner! So yeah, nah, don’t worry about it. If anything, Vir did us a favor by doing this; so be sure to like… let’s make sure to grab him a souvenir or something when we come back.”
The felinor’s frankly
erratic behavior worried me sometimes.
But then again, this was to be expected given the nature of cultural barriers. As such, I simply ‘smiled’ back a smile of my own, bearing my blunt teeth as best as I could. “Noted, Evina.”
It was around that point where Evina finally donned her helmet, clasping it into place as she began testing the communications suite with surprisingly little difficult.
“Alright. Can you still hear me through this thing?”
“Loud and clear, Evina.” I nodded.
“Right, let’s get this party started.”
92 Hours After the First Round of Interloper Interrogations. New Lorisa Forests LZ, En Route to the Signal Station (Far-Reach Point). Evina We were parked approximately seven hundred or so meters from the signal station.
Though that distance was measured from point to point, and definitely didn’t account for the obstacles and terrain that stretched from here to the station.
Despite that, and what my memories had warned me was a treacherous trek through dense and uncompromising foliage, the world outside was now anything
but.
However, despite the constant mission briefs and the logical part of my brain telling me that what awaited outside was nothing like my prior iterations recalled… the power of several lifetimes were just too powerful to overcome.
That was, until the exit ramp opened, and I saw the flattened devastation that awaited me. The charred forest, and the open landscape, quickly sent any doubts incurred by my prior iterations back to whence they came from.
So with one of the greatest obstacles out of the way, and the raw and unbridled power of human-driven alien technologies at our disposal, our deployment out of the shuttle and into the forest was a piece of cake.
More than that, I now had front row seats to the shock and uncompromising efficiency of automated combat.
Needless to say, I was more than happy to be on the
other side of the barrel when it came to this engagement.
Four distinct squads of robots formed up and ran
out of the back of the shuttle, forming into cohesive units comprised of ten or so felinoid bots, accompanied by a whole host of flying, crawling, slithering, and galloping machines that secured the perimeter for us within a matter of seconds.
Upon a single urging from Lysara, we walked out, flanked on all sides by a remaining detachment of bots, consisting of five felinoid units and a flight of five more drones.
For the first time in
any of my prior iteration’s lifetimes, I finally felt like I was on the winning side.
It was a good feeling.
And one I hoped continued as we made our leisurely march through the decimated forests and up towards the station.
The whole scene was just so…
jarring.
Especially as memory after memory came to the forefront of those trials and tribulations from the lives of my first, second, and third iterations that had all made this trek several times over.
The massive tileroot tree that dominated the area next to the station… was now just gone. The same could be said for the thick pipewood vines that obstructed the path every couple of steps, and even the earltail moss that kept growing thicker and thicker on the front entrance of the bunker.
Most importantly, the air around me was now silent and still, interrupted only by the near-silent whirrs from the robots and the crunching of ashen foliage beneath our boots.
This was perhaps the first time in my life I actually
enjoyed the devastation, a thought that was both ironic as it was troubling.
Regardless, we eventually made our way to the front of the facility in a staggering seven minutes; arriving in front of a circular door with gear-like cogs that were sunken
into the facility itself.
“So… why didn’t you try blasting through the walls or the other surfaces of the facility?” I inquired bluntly, pointing at parts of the facility that weren't built into the hillside.
“Countermeasures.” Lysara responded, his voice resonating
into my ears, a weird and alien sensation that still sent shivers down my spine. “Our scans were incapable of determining the detailed makeup of what was inside. And as a result, we have the be on the lookout for potential countermeasures against unauthorized entry. In addition, given the fact the facility still has enough power to maintain that broadcast, we can be certain that we not only have to worry about
passive countermeasures, but active ones as well.”
“Makes sense.” I nodded. “Is this why you wanted my expertise to begin with? In the hopes that I might have
some intel on this place?”
“Correct.” Lysara nodded.
“Well thankfully, you’re in luck.” I responded with a cocky grin, pointing towards a not-so-insignificantly sized hole drilled into one of the door’s massive cog-like edges. “Like I told you in the briefing, my first iteration had tried her hand at breaking into this place. It didn’t work out, obviously, but she did have
some theories as to how the whole door system works.” I began walking towards the hole, as a flood of memories from my first iteration slammed into me
hard. “So, just beyond this hole should be an emergency release mechanism. Apparently most fallout shelter doors have this as a failsafe or something; accessible only from the inside but capable of being accessed from the outside if you're willing to dig through twenty or so meters of solid metal and rock. This is the
mechanism I’m talking about here, so not actually the
door itself. My memory’s a bit fuzzy on the specifics but… I’m
sure that if we drill deeper into that, angling the hole
sideways so we don’t actually go
through the door itself, we should hit a mechanism that can be manipulated. Now if you have some fiber optic camera wire and a master lockpick or something, I’m sure you can do it in a few days. But considering we have the power of artificial intelligence on our side… I’m sure we can do it in five minutes.”
That vote of confidence for Vir was rewarded with a ping and a notification in front of my visual field. The existence of a HUD was again, just as jarring as literally everything
else right now.
With a heavy breath from Lysara, who at this point was scanning the hole with a whole host of scientific instruments, I received my answer as to how it was we were going to proceed. “One of the bots can be repurposed as a multipurpose drone.” He gestured towards a combat bot that was quickly switching from its main weapon, to what looked to be a seriously well-kitted out multitool kit masquerading as a hand. “We should be able to bore through this in about five minutes, from there… I’ll switch things over to Vir, and I’m sure we’ll be inside that bunker in under fifteen.”
The confidence was palpable in Lysara’s voice, giving me hope that today was the day that the burning curiosity in my first iteration’s memories would finally be addressed.

2024.05.21 22:46 DegreeComfortable198 Advice for neighbors 1.5 yr old dog lashing out at fence
We’ve lived in this home for 3 years, about a year ago our neighbors brought a puppy home, it’s a large breed (I don’t know which one) and every time me or my husband come near the fence we share with this neighbor, the dog comes bolting around the corner out of no where and begins barking and slamming his body against the fence and jumping. The chainlink is only about 4 ft tall and he’s easily jumping up so half his body at least is above the fence line. His hackles are up but he’s wagging his tail. I have pet this dog a cpl times when the owner is outside and he’s friendly but this behavior makes me incredibly nervous because I have a 3.5 yr old and an 8 month old. We have a gate that we occasionally need to use right next to the fence line and the dog will do this even when I have my baby in my arms. I have spoken to the owner and texted 2x expressing my concern and I’ve gotten nothing but excuses. This last text I explained I had my baby in my arms and this is completely unacceptable. She apologized, said the dog was getting neutered this week, and it has happened 2x since then. She is home when this happens most of the time and no one comes out to deal with it. It’s to the point I’m concerned for my kids and animals safety if the dog clears the fence. We’re getting a puppy in June and I worry about this dog being aggressive with him. These neighbors have had public outbursts in the past and I don’t want to start calling animal control for fear things will take an ugly turn between us, but her saying “well darn, I didn’t catch him in the act so I can’t stop it” isn’t going to work for me. I’ve considered paying to have a 6 ft wooden fence put in, but our yard is large and it will be very expensive PLUS it will prevent us from being able to put our camp trailer in the back when not using. I can’t/ won’t pay the $100 for the dog silencer machine. So, what’s your advice? Air horn? Animal control and completely ruin relationship with neighbors? Fence that costs us a ton of money and takes away RV access? I’m leaning toward airhorn but the last thing I want to do is make the dog more aggressive.

2024.05.21 22:29 ButtMath Fun Ways to Make Mechs Better
There seems to be a good amount of conversation today about issues with mechs and whether they're usable. As an avid mech player, who the mech was a huge reason to keep leveling, I use it whenever applicable, but I do so knowing that there is a lot to be improved (better targeting with missiles, unnecessarily long cool down time, limited applicability, the addition of mech modularity, etc.)
My post isn't to highlight the functional, common-sense fixes, which definitely need to happen, but talk more about useful and fun additions to make mechs more desirable slot options.
The below ideas are just a few I've come up with during my time playing Helldivers 2, but feel free to add on:
- Mechs drop with a backpack. A la the Fallout Amazon series. The backpack would contain a partial reload (50%) for the machine gun and rocket launcher, as well as an "armor patch," which would heal the mech by up to a 1/3 of its health. The backpack would take (x) seconds to deploy, and the action would either be performed by the pilot, or they could drop the pack to another player, enabling the mech to provide cover while being reloaded/patched.
This would help address the mech's longevity and functionality while offering balance, as the pilot has to dedicate a backpack slot to the mech's upkeep, the mech can't move while being repaired/reloaded, and the time for the action to occur (presumably out of combat).
- Ride the mech. The mechs are faster than they appear, and providing up to one player with the option of clinging on to the mech's back offers some interesting potential. For one, allowing players to mount the mech would occupy a hand slot (the player has to grab on somehow), which would free up a single hand.
With one hand, the player riding the mech could fire from a fixed position over or around the mech with one-handed weapons (providing a passive buff to one-handed weapon utility), keeping the mech safe from enemies that sneak up from the mech's blind spots.
Additionally, players riding the mech could throw grenades or stratagems.
- Plush mech interiors. When I first unlocked the mech, I had the (unreasonable?) expectation that there would be a cozy interior to the mech (e.g. screens showing ammo count, health, armor remaining, speed, etc), but players are locked in a third person perspective. It would be awesome to see how Arrowhead envisions the mech's interior, and I could even see a first-person view serving as a potential fix to the missile problem.
- Mech go BOOM! The mechs in Helldivers live short lives, and they are often abandoned on the battlefield to either be destroyed or run across while escaping hordes of enemies, but what if the mechs could be made to explode?
Much like the undetonated hellbombs littering the landscape, the mech operator should have the ability to set their mech to detonate, offering an explosive reward about half the size of an environmental hellbomb.
In the same way that players can set rate-of-fire and scope distance, mech pilots should be able to set a timed mech detonation or a reactive detonation (shooting the mech with an explosive weapon causes it to violently explode). I could imagine some creative bile titan kills or tactical explosions (the robot drone ship factories).

2024.05.21 22:28 Mysterious_Post813 Thoughts on my homebrew The Bunker blueprint, or at least what i got so far?
The game opens with constant gunfire and artillery shells bursting, the sound of men yelling as gunfire stifles the darkness of the night. We focus in on a platoon of troops in a foxhole, like lightning a shell hits close to, wiping out most of the men. As the ringing of the remaining ears clear they realize they need to retreat as they can no longer stay in the tight, cramped, flooded hole they've found themselves in and the only way back is up.
Every player must roll a d10, the player with the lowest role finds a piece of wood stuck within their leg, not bleeding but obstructing the ability to run without help, the players decide to deal with the issue there and then or deal with assisting the injured player in the retreat to try and fix it in a safer location.
As the players leave the foxhole a machine gun fire begins to target the group
Triggers a sequence
Flairs shoot lighting up the battlefield as you hear a whistle from the enemy blows They're crossing no man's land.
This sequence where the players must make a 200-250yd dash for a trench behind the foxhole.
Players take priority in turn rotation
Fleeing is (Mov x 5 =x yd)
Every player must make a dex roll on their turn
-a critical success allows them to run uninhibited
-a regular success causes equipment to get snagged on barbed wire causing them to get slowed
-a failure causes you pouches or bags to rip dropping a small amount of ammunition
-a critical failure causes you to get cut by barbed wire dealing 1d4 damage
Players carrying injured role with penalty die
On the machine guns turn roll to full auto at players but role with triple penalty dice due to multiple shots, out of range, and fast targets. You can decide volley size and damage per shot, BE NICE it's just the beginning
Once all players have made it across no mans land they will arrive at the door of a rather large bunker, they bang on the door and request assistance. After a bit of pleas a slot on the large door opens with a bun barrel sticking out. A rather shooken young man asks the players to tell him “where are you from” clearly trying to see if the players are enemies. A player can say anything but the second the man hears perfect english or french he swings open the door. The players see a young man with a shotgun, couldnt be over 20 years old. He commands the players to get in fast. As all the players enter he immediately goes to slam the door shut seeming to struggle to do so.
You meet Bert Newman a strapping young man from new york a very charming quick witted kid, he's always there to boost morale and is always ready to get work done. Its best to slowly show off his personality with small talk while he leads you down the winding halls.
After a few turns and twists you arrive at a sort of check point with a man with a british bren gun points his barrel down the hall, directly at Bert and the players.
You meet Rook a very large man sporting a very clean uniform, he seems concerned and Isn't too welcoming to the new residents, hes a harsh with his words, and presents himself as no nonsense, he does have a soft spot for Bert, able to handle his constant cracks and stories. I recommend making some dialogue for them to have every now and then to show their relationship.
After the players are done interacting have rook notice the player with the injury if it hasnt been taken care of he’ll direct the players to go to the infirmary to get fixed up. Have Bert offer to show them where to go. On the way to the infirmary try to keep engaging with the players as Bert
As the players arrive they will notice a large room with a few injured men, a very poor sight to behold. Once you arrive at the entrance you will meet a beautiful young lady dressed in a nurses gown
This is Louise, say hi to Louise :D. A pretty woman with a caring face, but with a hint of concern and fear.
She welcomes you and immediately notices the protruding fragments sticking out of the injured player, she looks back up and tells them to take a seat. The players can interact with Bert more, with each other, or Louise. Try to have Bert and Louise interact if you can, they are great friends.
After the player is patched up they can leave. They can follow Bert back to rook where Rook will give you the task to retrieve barbed wire from the armory as they want to start adding more defenses for the door incase of being invaded. Bert will again offer to guide the players
You begin your journey to the armory, once again try to interact if you can, mention what could have brought Bert to the war and his family. At a certain point Bert will trip a grenade wire trap, everyone roles a dex or dodge role. Bert is killed in the blast anyplayer that fails gets knocked to prone, you can determine if they were close enough to take damage. After all the dust clears the players see Bert's body slumped against a wall lifeless, they can't save him. If the players decide to search him they will find a mostly burnt map of the bunker, some ammo for a shotgun and a letter addressed to what you can assume is his family.
If the players continue to go and retrieve the barbed wire they will get a chance to change their weapons if they choose. As they return they notice Bert’s body is now gone, with a blood trail leading around an separate hallway
Thank you for reading!!!

2024.05.21 22:16 do_u_realize Gas station cringe
So this happened a few months ago. I was at this gas station and all the registers were broken but one. I had this older lady in front of me who seemed like grandparent to two kids. Behind me the line was probably 10 deep of people waiting at the only working register.
The manager was on phone with someone trying to fix another register but not seeming to get anywhere.
The lady in front of me took a while to figure out she needed to put her card in too pay. I wasn’t upset by this sometimes people just don’t know. But finally she finished the purchase of snacks for her grandkids and left. My turn!
Only not, she came storming back in and cut in line in front of me and said the snacks were 2 for 1 dollar. The cashier let her know the snacks were buy one get another for a dollar. She said “well I don’t want any of it! Refund me!” Well problem there, is machine to do refunds was down (says attendant) boomer said “I’ll wait”. Meanwhile the line is even longer now and I’m stuck behind this lady. Who knows how long it would take to get system running for refund.
Finally I just pulled out my wallet and tapped on boomers shoulder. I told her here is the 3 dollars for the snack you good? She without batting an eye said yep, took the cash and walked out. I thought it was hilarious.
In my defense paying her the refund, I was driving from Nebraska (at this point in the trip) with fam back to Texas and just wanted to get my drinks/snacks and go. Hahaha. Also I felt bad for the kids they looked bummed boomer grandma was gonna take their snacks away after already telling them she could get them.

2024.05.21 22:00 Dakine_Lurker Some questions from a Keurig user…
So I’m trying to quit my Keurig. Not great coffee, hate the amount of plastic involved. Didn’t even know super automatics were a thing, and I’m pretty excited about it.
I’m looking at the Philips 3300 with a wand, and that $650 price point is about as high as I can go right now. With that in mind, here’s a few questions:
1) We mainly drink Coffee. Usually 4-5 cups a day between the two of us. We do however enjoy various espresso beverages. With that in mind, will this produce good coffee? In what amounts(i.e. 12oz cup?)
2) Given that we mainly drink coffees, how difficult would it be, or would it be necessary to swap beans when we want an espresso drink? Based on the hoppers in most of these machines it seems like once the beans are in, they’re in. I see the pre-ground slot - Would we be best advised to put pre-ground beans in for coffees and only use the hopper for espresso, despite coffee being our main use? Sorry, I am not finding much info for coffee usage on these machines, mostly espresso.
3) Should I consider any alternatives? I was looking at the Delonghi Magnifica from Costco, but the Philips seems like a much newer machine and I’m not clear if the Costco version is “legit” as it has the same model number but less features.
Sorry if these are basic questions. I might be swimming against the current trying to use one of these for coffee, but I like the idea of having a latte from time to time as well.
Editing to add I’m in the US.

2024.05.21 21:49 Cancel_Existing Ratrig Stronghold Buying Advice
| Hey folks, I'm at a bit of a crossroads and could really use some advice on purchasing a RatRig CNC router. After a lot of research, I've narrowed my options down to the RatRig Stronghold Pro 1000x1000 and the RatRig One 750x750. Here's where I'm stuck: Initially, I was almost set on the Stronghold Pro. Its robust build and 16mm ballscrews really caught my attention. It seems like a machine that can handle a lot and stay precise, which is important to me. However, the sheer size of it is a significant concern. To fit it in my workspace, I'd need a table around 1.5x1.5m, and adding an enclosure would make the whole setup quite large. This isn't just about space – it's also about practicality and ease of access in my workshop- it would somehow work but yeah On the other hand, the RatRig One 750x750 is more compact, which is a big plus for my current space. My main hesitation with this model is the 8mm trapezoidal leadscrews. I've always been under the impression that leadscrews have more play compared to belts or ballscrews, which might affect precision and performance. However, I recently came across a YouTuber (Datulab Tech / Dark Art Guitars) who uses an original KillerBee (the predecessor to the Stronghold One). I was pretty impressed with its performance, especially in aluminum. This got me thinking – are leadscrews maybe not as bad as I thought? Another option I've considered is ordering the Stronghold Pro and shortening it a bit to better fit my space. But I'm not sure if I'm capable of cutting the hardened ballscrews without damaging them. Plus, even with this adjustment, the cost would still be at the upper limit of my budget. Here's a bit more about my background and needs: I have some basic CNC experience from working with an old Shapeoko clone, so I'm not a complete beginner but still have a lot to learn. I plan to use the CNC mainly for machining wood (about 80% of the time) and occasionally aluminum/brass (about 20%). My projects include carving and engraving Montessori kids' toys, earrings, dog tags, possibly a guitar body at some point, and custom PC housing builds. For these projects, precise tolerances for metals aren't super critical, but I do need reliable performance. I'm especially interested in hearing from people who own similar machines, or even one of these models or their predecessors (like the KillerBee, which seems to be an update of the QueenBee). My budget is around 4-5k €, and this needs to cover everything: the CNC machine itself, an enclosure, a sturdy table, a shop vac with a dust separator, and a cheap compressor for chip evacuation. Any insights, experiences, or advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm looking to make a well-informed decision that balances performance, practicality, and budget. Thanks in advance for your help! I remember replaying a set of games all the time when i was a kid, but this one just wont click in my head, a 2d, turn based flash game, in which you would have to fight machines, one per level, to get currency and buy/upgrade certain attacks/abilities, i remember the last enemy/last level featuring a gigantic purple arm, and one of the attacks being somewhat of a death star that would fire a beam at your enemy, smaller ones being the 2(?) lower powe non-upgraded versions. The player character is a dark figure with no features other than a staff/stick. ive been trying to find this game for years and im hoping somebody could remember about it. Thank you.

2024.05.21 21:44 StrangeBoat9843 This is about to be the stupidest post ever.
| It's stupid because I don't know there terminology for all this stuff. There is a pipe in our condenser that takes the condensation away from the bottom part of the condenser that holds the electrical portion of the machine. The pipe got knocked out of place. The bottom part of the condenser got really wet. The HVAC stopped working. My husband was drying it with towel. Now placed a fan in front of the damp part. Is there any return from this issue. I really feel in part responsibile because I kept some boxes near the pipe. The kids added more stuff and I fear they may have bumped that pipe that caused the wet issue. I hate seeing my husband so stressed. He was literally working on the dishwasher that broke this week and now this. 😞Any advice. Or questions, I know I did a bad job at explaining this. submitted by StrangeBoat9843 to hvacadvice [link] [comments] |
2024.05.21 21:29 BigFurSeal Help Needed. Computer stuck at Win 10 spinning circle screen.
Hi Guys, thank you so much for reading this post; it's a bit long, as I tried not to omit any details. Below is a description for my case.
Computer Info: Lenovo ThinkStation P520; C422 chipset; Xeon W-2195 CPU; 2*16GB 2666MHz registered ECC RAM; 1TB 970 Evo Plus; Graphic card 1: GTX 750Ti (as an graphic output interface); Graphic card 2: P102-100 (for graphic computing; both cards are working perfectly); Windows 10 Pro
Background: The computer was working normally until I unnecessarily added a Gigabyte GC-Maple Ridge Thunderbolt 4 expansion card to it. The computer's user manual mentioned it was compatible with Thunderbolt 3 cards (didn't mention if it was Lenovo cards only), but didn't mention the compatibility with Thunderbolt 4 cards. So I wanted to take a chance.
I inserted the card into the 6th PCIe slot, and connected the headers on both the card and the motherboard by a USB cable and a Thunderbolt cable provided by Gigabyte. After installing the card, I turned on the Intel Thunderbolt option in BIOS.
Problem Description and Trials: - Problem: I pressed the power button, the machine was stuck at the spinning circle screen right after the Lenovo logo screen.
- Trial 1: Removed the Thunderbolt 4 card; turned off the Intel Thunderbolt option in BIOS. Issue still existed.
- Trial 2: Removed all the PCIe devices except the GTX 750Ti; removed all the USB devices except a keyboard. Issue still existed.
- Trial 3: Reset the BIOS to factory. Issue still existed.
- Trial 4: Tried to reinstall the system by inserting into USB 3 port a flash drive with Windows 10 image burnt; set the flash drive as the 1st in boot sequence. The flash drive was recognized and read, but screen was stuck at the "Windows 10 logo with a spinning circle underneath" screen. (I tried it several times, and sometimes it was stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor on the top left)
- Trial 5: Inserted the flash drive into USB 2 port and installed the system. Result was same as Trial 4's.
- Trial 6: Removed the hard drive; inserted a flash drive with WIN PE system burnt. Stuck at "Windows 10 logo with a spinning circle underneath".
- Trial 7: Performed hardware diagnostic. CPU, motherboard, and RAM had no issue.
- Trial 8: Removed the motherboard cell and reinserted it after 30 seconds; added a SATA SSD; inserted Windows 10 installation flash drive into USB 2 port. Stuck on the same screen.
- Trial 9: Successfully flashed the BIOs with a flash drive in USB 2 port; tried to reinstall Windows 10 again. Still stuck on the same screen.
- Trial 10: Burnt Ubuntu 24.04 image in the flash drive; inserted the drive in USB 3 port; successfully installed Ununtu into the SATA SSD.
- Trial 11: Ran Ubuntu for several minutes, then reboot. Stuck at a black screen (not pure black, had some backlit) after the Lenovo logo screen.
- Trial 12: Forced to shut down the machine and boot again. Successfully boot into Ubuntu.
- Trial 13: Reboot again. Stuck at screen same as Trial 11's. No matter how I tried, the machine hasn't booted into Ubuntu ever since.
- Trial 14: Added the 970 Evo Plus back. Couldn't boot into either Windows or Ubuntu.
- Trial 15: Repeat Trial 4. Same issue.
I’ve exhausted all my abilities and this issue is driving me crazy. Any hints are extremely appreciated!
I do know that I can buy a used motherboard for a few tens of bucks and get the machine running again; but I just don't want to give up on this problem...and it looks to me that it shouldn't be a hardware issue...
Thank you guys!

2024.05.21 21:18 Yani-Madara List of clues that Dottore could be morally grey
-Disclaimer: This is an examination of Dottore being a complex morally grey villain that wasn't just born 100% evil, it's NOT a case that he's a good boy.-
I'll assume Zandik is Dottore since it's very likely (plus, someone tried to name their Wanderer that but it didn't work.)
Let's start with the oldest piece of lore:
--
Doctor's Pinion reveals a tragic past with unknown reasons for persecution --
When Pierro first tried to recruit Zandik / Dottore, he responded:
"Will you treat me like the Akademiya did? Will you call me a monster, a madman?" "Or will you treat me as my hometown did, and chase me away with pitchforks and clubs...?"
Some people assume the persecution was because of his experiments but it's important to note that the fact is we don't know what happened so there's a chance it wasn't something evil. That he could be chased away by "pitchforks and clubs" indicates he was weak at that point and couldn't do anything to stop it.
He also expresses a desire to merge humans with machines.
"With or without a Vision, and irrespective of their physique or combat skills,"Enhanced humans" would surely display strength far beyond the average."
This shows a desire to give power to the weak (likely including himself), even if they lack visions. Which isn't inherently a bad thing, it's just against the Akademiya's teachings. This applies even to Scaramouche, whose power had been locked by Raiden and he unlocked it.
--
Mysterious moral convictions --
Although a lot of the fandom accuses him of having no ethics or morals at all, there are several hints that this isn't the case.
He got mad at Scaramouche when told: "you only care about your crazy experiments" and told Nahida he has "his own convictions, we just don't share them" which were both conveniently not further explained. There is also the Jeht quest incident but i'll discuss it later on.
--
Eleazar hospital notes --
To briefly summarize the notes, he cured a patient using another dead patient's remains. His treatment was harsh but successful. These notes read like a Dr. House script, Dottore not giving a crap about the patient's religious beliefs included.
Abbas had a terrible ending because he had developed insanity and ran away. Zandik/ Dottore left a note warning not to let him go but it seems the staff didn't listen.
These notes align with how plague doctors were misunderstood and feared in real life. This motif was incorporated into his video game iteration, replacing the joker / clown persona.
Some people interpreted these notes as "Dottore murders and mutilates people that are alive for experiments" but there's no indication of that.
--
Aranara experiment notes --
These are the worst by far. It's unclear if the "subjects" were people with Eleazar or healthy people exposed to the withering for tests. It has to be pointed out that it seems the actions were done by his subordinates since it's likely Dottore reprimanding them at the end:
"This is a waste of resources. It is advisable to watch over the subjects' mental state in the next experiment and avoid exposing them to extreme environments... Lab Lead on duty: ████"
Yes, this sounds bad but it's proof he isn't a sadist that enjoys watching pain.
It also means he is higher in a moral standpoint than characters like Jack Horner. These type of characters don't care or enjoy deaths with the pretext of "we can always get more lackeys."
--
During the Jeht quest --
Froderock (a subordinate of Dottore) wants to capture an eremite. It is stated he is acting on his own and that Dottore gave an order not to kidnap eremites.
A note by another Fatui member states that Froderock is going to get killed for going against the order. We can theorize that the Harbinger himself would kill him. There's also a line about "following military regulations" which means his subordinates operate under a code and can't just kidnap people for experiments for the lols.
Fatui Negotiator: Professor Froderock was looking for live specimens in the desert — he always defied The Doctor's orders... That's just pure jealousy, if you ask me
...I urge you to consider, Captain Zoya, that if we are able to complete this research work in the desert, perhaps our entire expeditionary force may receive the favor of our great Harbinger... (This line has been crossed out using a red pen, and a line in red has been added: "How about you consider military regulations? Or perhaps you would like to consider how long you have left to live?")
A similar thing happened with Arlecchino in the Fortune Slip quest in Inazuma. Subordinates of her were acting on their own by following the previous Knave's teachings to make some orphans for the House.
-- *
Time of Insight Artifact * --
It mentions a "mad scientist expelled by the akademia" and the text under it seems to be Dottore speaking.
The last part says:
"Those sellswords (Eremites) once did much for me. I trust they will not disappoint this time, either."
Combining Jeht quest with this makes it seem that eremites helped Dottore in some way and he is fond enough of them to slaughter a subordinate that brings them harm.
The following text seems to be Dottore's reason to want to capture Aranaras:
"The dream had to be captured — along with the inhabitants of the forest who could control dreams, To remind that friend once again of one's own form and the memories that were shared.
If the organ that governs memory has taken too much damage and cannot be healed, Then bring another old friend and dwell in dreams of the past together, Play in a small tree house, and explore the limitless depth of the jungle. Yes, that would be nice as well. For in dreams, everyone has a chance to start over."
I couldn't find more info about this "friend". It seems to be someone who suffered the effects of erosion or death, or an aranara that lost their memory.
--
Al Haitham's SQ --
Alhaitham: (To Siraj / the villain, after praising his intelligence)
"You would never let a test subject escape. Mistakes like that are beneath you, and you also won't leave any mistake without a resolution."
This is relevant because we know Dottore is canonically smarter than Siraj yet he didn't hunt down Collei (Barnabas is the one that traumatized and wanted to kill her), Abbas or Scara. It's a known thing there's a Fatui code that traitors and deserters are executed to avoid spilling secrets. Dottore leaves even Scara alone, you may argue that he was lazy but suspiciously Childe, who during Labyrinth Warriors was chasing Scara, soon appeared in Inazuma in a photo taking event, leaving for Snezhnaya, after Scara lost his gnosis.
It was never explained why Childe was chasing him to take away the Gnosis yet suddenly Scara appeared with Dottore without Childe. This is suspicious because Childe loves to fight, to the point he wanted to fight Arle while recovering on her SQ. He didn't even show up to finish off Scaramouche at the end.
To play Devil's advocate, it could also be Scaramouche is a part of some unknown plan too and nothing to do with mercy.
--
Dottore's speech to Niwa --
Taking into account Nahida's story that says: "the monster found solace in the kitten", the black bird referring to himself as "a monstrosity yet they are too foolish to see it" and Dottore's lines to Pierro:
"Will you call me a monster, a madman?"
Dottore sees himself as an inhuman monster. It puts into question if the following line wasn't just about Scaramouche and is actually a metaphor of Dottore speaking about his past:
"Escher: Even without you, that pure, innocent puppet would only end up being used by someone else instead. What other reason would a human have for befriending one who is not of our kind?"
Although Dottore refers to himself as "human", the two lines I quoted previously contradict this. Mentally he sees himself as not human (to the point of finding solace in a living puppet), even though his words say otherwise. There is also a chance this Dottore was no longer human at all, the Nahida story shows the monster bird had tiny floating birds around, even though he hadn't studied Scaramouche to create the segments.
There is also a stark contrast between Dottore joining the Fatui expresing concern over been rejected again yet he is embracing his monster persona in the Niwa scene.
"Escher: Think of me as a monster or a demon, if you wish... "
It could be a sign of a person with trauma who steered into an evil path. Kept getting called a monster until he accepted it.
There could be many reasons for the change, besides being used, -incoming pure speculation- he could have experimented on himself to have less emotions or taking this quote into account: "everyone has a chance to start over in dreams" he believes he can commit atrocities and it won't matter because he plans to do a reset somehow.
" The Doctor: Jester, I have completed the task you gave me. Creating a gap and infiltrating Inazuma's inner workings... Heh, what fun it was. The Doctor: I'd like to introduce a puppet to you. If he proves useful, let's make him our newest comrade. And if not... let's turn him to dust."
The bold part is more clues of either future Scara related scheming or Dottore's words are an act, mercy was shown when he became useless. It also seems that Pierro stirred him into a darker path.
I wouldn't say it's confirmation that Pierro is pure evil because we barely know anything about him, there's a chance it was for some greater good since that's a trend with the Harbingers.
--
Possible Sohreh murder --
At first glance, it seems way too obvious that Zandik did it, it's like watching a murder mystery movie and the first suspect is a red herring.
Since people frequently incorrectly state: "Dottore murdered a girl while they were having a picnic" like a fact, I'm going to make a deep dive into these notes:
First there is no clear motive for him killing Sohreh. (Niwa had a purpose.)
attack of Rishboland Tigers. In need of first aid..."
The bold part implies she was still alive while Zandik was dealing with the Ruin Guard. The broken bone didn't happen during the picnic while he was alone with her. She was declared dead and buried after the attack, she could have been killed during it while everyone was distracted.
-Does the Akademiya think that Zandik is responsible?-
There is a
message board that says he was investigated over her murder.
The lack of motive combined with Zandik only receiving negative consequences from saving the team makes me think he was framed and acted on impulse / emotion when saving them or he turned it on to spook the tigers and it accidentally killed her.
Why? He could have just ran away and let everyone die to not reveal he was hiding ruin guard knowledge. Which he expressed on the notes that he didn't want the rest to know:
"I am going to take them (Ruin guards) apart, and record the size and shape one by one...
...But first of all, this secret must not be revealed to the other team members..."
...Thank goodness, Zandik reacted quickly. Otherwise, the whole team would be in serious trouble..."
-Some people argue that "running away and letting everyone die would have been too suspicious so he saved them."
It's more likely he was just a weak regular human at that point in his life so it wouldn't have been too suspicious to run away / he actually risked his life to shut it down.-
The 2 burned notes both state: "Someone seems to have burnt the contents in a hurry" it could have been the person trying to frame him. One of them is a note about the Ruin Guards and has Zandik's signature, they may have wanted to steal credit of his research.
-Regarding who framed Dottore,
u/Sandflow_23 commented an excellent
theory lt seems Zandik didn't care much about Sohreh's death since he proceeded to ask the team to take back the Ruinguard while she was bleeding but the Eleazar hospital notes come after this incident. Was this his first instance of curing people?
Did being unable to save someone influence him in some way? It may just be coincidental but it's worth taking note. I'm trying to look at all possibilities.
People usually see Sohreh's note as "she learned Dottore's secret so he murdered her" But something I haven't seen discussed is how there is also a chance he trusted her and decided to open up to people more. Previously he said studying Ruinguards could get him kicked out but after the following note by Sohreh, he decided to try to convince his team to take back the ruin guard:
"...Zandik was attracted by the ancient machines left behind by some civilization here...
We had a great time and decided to go on a picnic tonight..."
Finally, to play Devil's Advocate: it seems he also had another secret mission that was never explained.
"...It's a shame that documents regarding its (the giant golem's) energy supply systems have been lost, and I have far too important a mission to accomplish to afford to start from scratch. If not..."
He could have killed her because she learned that secret but it's still weird that he'd go and choke her with people focused on him speaking about Ruinguard studies.
--
Arle SQ --
Lyney said "he proposed the direction of the research " for the bottled flames. That he wants to give people "a chance to start over" was also hinted in Time of Insight artifact. I won't be surprised if it turns out most of the injured kids he took from Crucabena are actually fine. The Eremites, which he didn't want his subordinates to kidnap, were also healthy, so this is another instance of him seeking to work with weak people to give them power. I'm NOT denying there's a chance he wants to use it for some other plan like burning the tree like other Redditors have proposed Finally, there remains the question of which Dottore would be playable. I predict the original or Omega. (Knocking off the angelic new segment theory)
We don't know if the original is alive, since Raiden destroyed her physical body (and the segments were based on Scaramouche) he could be dead BUT giving a kill switch to Omega may have a deeper meaning.
Like those fragments of his mind from dead segments will re-materialize in an empty segment or object his soul is bound to or go back to Omega and change his personality, the former sounds like FullMetal Alchemist but a Remuria quest confirms this is a thing in Genshin. Finally done, sorry if this is ridiculously long but I wanted to provide quotes to sustain the arguments, especially since some people hate him so much based on mostly misinformation.

2024.05.21 21:04 UndeadRedditing Not excusing their mistakes with the Sega Saturn but Sega of Japan's boneheaded approach of Japan-Fist and misunderstanding foreign markets isn't unique to them and is actually a wider problem of the Japanese Business World (as seen with Sunrise and Gundam)
Sega of Japan deserves all the criticisms for their idiocy of overtaking the dictatorship of the wider Sega company and running the company down because they tried to manage the global markets without understanding the cultures behind them and basing their actions upon the tastes of the Japanese market. On top of putting their eggs in one baskets and obsessively trying to make the Saturn king of Japan's console industry................
However there's a gigantic misconception on the internet by understandably P$!%ed off Western gamers that Sega of Japan's boneheaded run of the company is some unique kind of stupidity unmatched in history.........
Actually there's bad news and its that this is actually a big problem in the Japanese business world especially among companies that are domestic giants such as Konami.
And I'll start with one of my favorite franchises. Mobile Suite Gundam.
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s the most recent iteration of the franchise Mobile Suit Gundam Wing aired on the Toonami block on Cartoon Network. And to say it was a massive success. It was easily Toonami's most watched program after Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon and there would be profitable sales of Gundam Wing figures in American major retailers like K-Mart and kB Toys during the show's run. There was more demand for further Gundam content. Easy pathway to creating a juggernaut in the anime industry in America right?
Well the immediate followup to Gundam Wing was....... The original Gundam. Form the 1970s. I'm not kidding. The studios that makes Gundam Sunrise made this choice.
Massive gigantic bomb in America. Even Toonami's less popular programs like Ronin Warriors hard much higher viewerships.
The show's reason for flopping was that the original Gundam looked just so outdated with its animation being 70s flair. The original Gundam is actually superior to Wing in almost every other way especially the overall plot...... But the animation looked so old nobody wanted to watch it.
Why did Sunrise choose to follow up Wing which was their latest installment just before Turn A which was actually running in Japan during the same time Toonami was airing Wing in America?
In Japan the specific continuity the first original Gundam series follows, the UC timeline, is the handsdown most popular canon. The first two sequels Zeta (the Gundam series with the highest ratings ever in the history of the franchise within Japan) and ZZ formed a trilogy with the original Gundam of interlinking stories that culminates and concluded most the unresolved arcs in the original Gundam along with a slew of entwined movies and OVAs (think miniseries in Western terms). Basically the UC timeline is so big in Japan that we still get new stories every couple of years focused on specific characters, incidents, and so much more as well. Ask the general populace about Gundam and its the robot suits and characters of the UC timeline such as Amuro Rey and the Zaku robots and the that they immediately picture in their heads when they think Gundam similar to how the vast bulk of Star Wars fans below 16 always associates the franchise with Luke, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Obi Wan, and Anakin/Darth Vader and the iconic scenes are teh Death Star onscreen and lightsaber fights.
So in Sunrise's head, not only was the first Gundam a guaranteed success in America but that they had to follow it up with it because the UC is the heart and soul of the entire franchise. The studios sincerely believed that with the original Gundam's even better and more complicated storyline that crowds will flock to watch it every weekday on Toonami...........
Failing to realize that a prime part of what made Wing so impressionable on Western audiences was the visuals of space battles and the awareness of the mobile suits in action. The complicated story of Gundam Wing (for the standards of Western animation on TV was definitely a component that made kids stick to the end but what attracted them in the first place was awesome onscreen actions like Heero escaping capture and knocking out a bunch of men on the way with kicks and piloting the Gundam for the first time to demolish tanks and humvees and a division of soldiers within seconds.
Sunrise did not get this point. They mistakenly assumed that teens and children in the West would have understood the original Gundam's anti war storyline entwined with lots of politics and drama was something that was darn complicated for an American 12 year old to get. They failed to get that the West's TV animation scene was extremely tame hell mainstream afternoon Network Television overall even live action was pretty much PG in content and something like Gundam was definitely pushing it for timeslots for minors including teens. That issues like killing children in a mass bombardment with permanent arm crippling even decapitation was only started to be accepted on afternoon teen soap opera and Saturday morning cartoon timeslots.
That it was pretty tame (by modern standards) live action shows with lots of cool visual action that was bloodless and usually PG like Hercules The Legendary Journeys and its sister spinoff Xena and Buffy the Vampire Slayer that the teen range was watching in addition to laughably corny stuff (but still having cool colorful onscreen effects) like GI Joe making the center of children's animation.
When the original Gundam flopped Sunrise took around 2 years to realize their mistake and released G Gundam. An incarnation of the series around the premise of Robots dueling each other in a tournament of gladiatorial fights. Thats an understatement G Gundam takes the whole premise to another level by making the Gundam robots fight with the speed, fluidity, and magical abilities of Dragon Ball Z. Kung Fu with giant Robots.
But the damage was done. While G Gundam did a hell lot better than the original Gundam, interest in the franchise has waned by then and in turn merchandise sales which Sunrise makes its bulk profits from were nowhere as profitable in America as Wing was. When Sunrise attempted to bring over their newer series such as Seed (which was massively popular in Japan even far more than Gundam Wing and G Gundam which already were considered hits by the studios) it was canceled from the maintime slot shortly afterwards and the ret of the series was put on death slots. The momentum had ceased. And not helping was that by that point other mech anime such as FLCL also aired on Toonami and fellow rival franchises like Zoids were begin imported.
Basically by now Gundam had looked generic to the Western audience esp Americans. The next wave of new anime fans in the 2000s was a disadvantaged market because the novelty of Gundam Wing being the first mech anime was not there for future Gundam installments. Gundam has fallen so out of the anime Zeitgeist that whatever we got in the future aired on lesser known channels like Color TVs or came in DVD releases if not even localised at all only being available on fansubs.
The worst part? When Gundam Wing ended its run on Toonami, Turn A Gundam, their newest incarnation with even better animation and just as much awesome moments of one giant mech destroying a an army of other mechs in addition to divisions of tanks and infantry, had just finished airing in Japan. By all logic it should have been a no brainer to snatch this as the followup to Wing right?
But not to Sunrise because Turn A was one of the lesser popular incarnations at that point. Because the UC was so the face of the franchise in Japan so it must succeed in America and the rest of the world no?
Does this sound familiar? Simply to put Japanese companies have a gigantic issues of failing to realize that what succeeds in Japan is not applicable elsewhere. And that given the chance to they'll even try to micro manage even something as loose in concept as franchise licensing in other countries.
OK thats an exaggeration I just said but my point ist he horrible mishandling of the Sega Saturn outside of Japan isn't really some 1 in a billion lottery ticket level of stupidity. Sega of Japan's screwups is actually quite typical of companies that succeeded domestically but never did anything in other markets that then decide to expand to outside markets beyond Japan. The Gundam example was so already long that I don't feel like typing anymore but boy oh boy there are a gazillion examples you can find if you do your googling from Konami's early mishandling of the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG as well as their shift to focusing on Pachinko and Pachislot much to the dismay of Western gamers esp fans of MGS and Silent Hill. And so much more.
Simply Sega of Japan isn't uniquely stupid. Its a perfect symptom many issues of the business world in Japan.

2024.05.21 21:03 UndeadRedditing Not excusing their mistakes with the Sega Saturn but Sega of Japan's boneheaded approach of Japan-Fist and misunderstanding foreign markets isn't unique to them and is actually a wider problem of the Japanese Business World (as seen with Sunrise and Gundam)
