A few weeks ago I released a simple called Demus: Easy Music Streaming that allows you to import your Spotify playlists and then listen to them without ads and with unlimited skips simply by playing the songs from YouTube. It's so easy that you can start listening just 3 seconds after installing it!
Demus requires no Spotify account, contains no subscription, works completely on your phone, and collects no personal data.

Frequently Asked Question

Is it legal?
Demus works within the strict limitations of the YouTube API. Playing requires a constant internet connection. No media content is stored on your device and therefore neither downloading nor offline playback is supported. All playback is done through an integrated Safari-like view.
Do music artists still get paid?
Yes! Listening to any song in my app counts as a view on the YouTube website and will therefore generate per-stream revenue to the artist.
How do you make money from your app when it's free with no ads?
There is an optional one-time in-app purchase which gives you access to some cool features such as color themes, app icons, and more advanced listening statistics.
Can it support iOS 16 and lower?
Demus uses the latest and most up-to-date frameworks which are sadly not supported on older versions of iOS. But fear not, my app will be waiting for you when you upgrade!
How about an Android version?
I am actively working on porting Demus to Android. It should be available later this year!

“The sea has finally come for us.”
Hugh Desmond watched as his home of Queens was battered by rain from above and flooding from below. He only saw destruction and carnage, but he assumed it would eventually clear up.
The Borough President of Queens, Hugh Desmond was formal and grandstanding, trying to run for the mayor of NYC when the hurricane hit. His primary goal was to make sure everything was “going as planned”; he tried to unite the left, moderate, and right parts of New York City’s politics.
He only saw destruction and chaos, but he assumed it would eventually clear up.
Shelby Sherman, a government official who took refuge in Hugh Desmond’s house, looked around. She had been getting news from the blaring television, which was barely functional with all the power lines being knocked around.
“MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDERS… NATIONAL GUARD… HUNDREDS OF REPORTED DEATHS… CATEGORY THREE… LAGUARDIA FLIGHTS CANCELED… SUBWAY SYSTEM FLOODED… MAYOR CONFIRMED DEA”
A blackout.
Shelby was repeatedly making calls to prominent officials, but without cell service, she had been getting no luck.
30 minutes later, at 7:34 PM, the Vanishing would happen, unbeknownst to Hugh and Shelby.
“Power AND water lines?!” Shelby screamed into a now-useless phone. “Hugh Desmond, what’s going on?!”
Hugh turned around only briefly, saying that “it’s fine”, before looking back at the window. The Borough President had been strangely meditative, as if he knew something had happened.
After an hour of waiting, a group of Navy sailors knocked on the door. Shelby rushed to answer them, but Hugh stopped her, slowly getting up and walking towards the door. “How can I help you, officers?”
“The Navy?” Shelby shouted from inside the house. “Is the entire US military landing at New York?!”
“Yes,” a seaman said grimly. “You’re the only official left in this area.”
“We come with strange news,” said another sailor. “We’ve lost connection to the mainland. However, we were able to establish a radio communication with the UK and Ireland. Apparently…” he looked around and hesitated. “I don’t know how to explain this. But it seems that every human on the continental mainland has disappeared.”
Hugh Desmond closed their eyes, in full contemplation, before opening their eyes again. His expression was neutral and apathetic. Shelby reacted far more naturally, shouting from inside the house.
“So that’s the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, and Oceania… all gone,” said Hugh.
“Not only that,” a junior seaman interrupted, “but it’s as if humanity never existed on these continents in the first place! It’s like the wilderness has taken over!”
What followed would be commonly known as the Double Tragedy. Chaos became rampant. Looting became widespread. Thousands of desperate people clamored their way across the East River and the Staten Island Sound only to be met with the emptiness of the mainland. It’s estimated that upwards of a million people died from the destruction, chaos, and starvation. It matched 9/11 in terms of sheer psychological impact, and perhaps exceeded it in damage done.
June 8, 2028, 11:55 AM EST.
“Listen up, everyone!” Hugh Desmond shouted on top of a ruined platform. It was an overcast sky; the rain had mostly dissipated. “National Guard and US Corps of Engineers, I thank you for your service. Our main goal is the Ravenswood Generating Station. Make sure to ask for help from any civilian engineers if you can. I want a small division to go to the Park Drive East pumping station in Queens, and if possible, we should have a small force secure the JFK and LaGuardia airports. Is that clear?”
The personnel cheered, although it was a strained cheer. They had all been through a lot, and Hugh Desmond understood that.
June 12, 2028, 6:18 AM EST
Shelby entered a large, aging building. A makeshift sign saying “QUEENS CITY COUNCIL” hung on the side.
“What’s up?” said a voice from behind. Shelby was surprised; she quickly turned around. She recognized the voice as Emilia Ramos, the strong and kind Borough President of Brooklyn. Emilia pulled a cigarette and lit it, urging Shelby to come with her.
Shelby and Emilia walked inside the building. “I’m not really sure,” she said. “I was an intern for the Washington D.C government. I was just here on a vacation, and then… all this happened. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do now.”
“None of us know,” said Emilia. “I was just trying to help my people in Brooklyn, but now it seems Hugh Desmond has this whole government idea, and he wants me in.”
Shelby looked around at the derelict offices. “I haven’t really thought about that. I mean, isn’t America gone now?”
Emilia raised an eyebrow. “Why would it be? Sure, the Constitution and White House is gone, but so what? The culture, customs, and ideals of America are still here.”
“New York is a city in perpetual motion,” Emilia continued. “People come in, and come out. The city will always be a bastion of change.”
Shelby looked in contemplative silence as the two of them entered a room. It was extremely dusty, but there was a small table and a bunch of chairs. There was already a bunch of people there- NYPD, National Guard, Navy, Coast Guard, and even an Air Force pilot; Hugh Desmond was sitting at the center of it all.
“Take a seat,” Emilia said; the two of them sat down.
Hugh Desmond looked at everyone and then stood up. He took a deep breath. “Greetings, everyone. It is time to form the Provisional Government of the United States.”
June 29, 2028, 9:31 AM EST.
Shelby Sherman and Emilia Ramos sat down in the same dusty room. This was their first meeting after the formation of the Provisional Government, and Shelby was excited. She finally felt like she had something important to do.
The room was significantly more crowded this time. More high-ranking Navy officers had arrived, but the same group of NYPD, National Guard, Coast Guard, and the singular Air Force pilot were talking amongst themselves.
Hugh Desmond arrived, immediately making the room quiet. His calm and stern demeanor was perfect for leading a group.
He immediately started talking. “We are the successors to America. I understand what we’re doing is not an easy task, but our leadership is necessary in helping and securing the remainder of the American people.”
“First, let’s review what we’ve done in the past 3 weeks,” Hugh Desmond continued.
A National Guard officer spoke up. “I’m happy to say that we have practically re-United Long Island under our control. The Long Island railroad system has been restored, and the productive lands of Suffolk County have been secured.”
Shelby then had a disturbing thought. “Wait, what about all the zoos in New York? What will happen to the animals there?” she whispered to Emilia.
Having somehow understood her whispering, Hugh Desmond turned her eyes to Shelby. “Thanks for bringing it up. The Queens Zoo has been occupied by a detachment of Navy officers. The domesticated animals were set aside as livestock, while the area of the zoo is being used as homes for these livestock. We are also planning another operation in Central Park Zoo, but there’s a big obstacle. A group of locals have orchestrated ‘Operation Noah’s Ark’, a plan to evacuate all animals to the mainland.”
“What’s wrong with that?” Shelby asked.
This time, Emilia spoke up. “We don’t want to introduce animals to the untouched wilderness. Who knows what ecological consequences will follow?”
Hugh Desmond nodded. “Naval officers, what is the status of our fleet?”
“We have secured most of our East Coast ships, but we need to anchor them to conserve fuel,” said a Navy admiral. “We’re in the process of acquiring yachts, sailboats, and other light boats from the civilian population.”
“And what about the Atlantic Seaboard?” said Hugh.
A Coast Guard officer turned to him. “We’ve absorbed Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and Aquidneck. However, I don’t think we should go down to the Carolinas…”
Hugh Desmond looked at him curiously. “Why is that?”
“To put it bluntly, we’re running out of resources,” said the officer. “We need some sort of ration system in place before we can expand southwards.”
“We’ll figure out the rations soon,” Hugh responded. “But send someone to the Outer Banks at once! We need to be the clear successor to the USA, unless we want copycats to emerge.”
A Naval admiral stood up and looked at Hugh. “Unfortunately, they already have. A group calling themselves the ‘Minutemen’ has taken control of Staten Island. They’re composed of various competing factions; some Army generals, some Marines, some white nationalists, most of them anti-you.”
“And what’s stopping us from doing a little march there?” said Hugh Desmond.
2 hours later, on Staten Island.
“Listen up, USPG soldiers! This is our first real test, and we better root out these Minutemen before they establish a presence here!”
A former Navy officer, Donna Brown, was leading a few dozen young soldiers into a quiet, cramped part of Staten Island. It was now completely abandoned. Staten Island was eerily quiet, but Donna knew the Minutemen were here somewhere.
“Raise your guns,” she said quietly as they entered the Staten Island Borough Hall, supposedly the center of the Minutemen resistance. The soldiers looked left and right as the eerie silence continued. “Watch out for traps,” Donna said nervously.
They opened door after door, but there was nobody else in sight. Donna stopped and led the group into a large room.
The room was filled with notes and papers. On every single one of them laid a message: “Don’t think we’re done.”

I just got home from my recent trip and was VERY anxious about flying Norse because of a lot of bad reviews, so I wanted to give my feedback.
I booked 4 separate premium JFK-CDG (NYC-Paris) and FCO-JFK (Rome-NYC) tickets on Norse for the first week of May and back on the second week of May. My quick summary to everyone who wants the TLDR: great experience for the money spent, thankfully no travel hiccups or delays, and we didn’t break the bank and we were able to budget more money on what we cared about, accommodations and experiences.
The JFK-CDG flight was a packed 12:30 am flight with about half the flight going to the Taylor Swift concert in Paris that week. Check in was a bit confusing as the desk hadn’t been assigned when we arrived to terminal 7, but once the desk opened up, we were able to get checked in fine in the premium line. For bags, my husband and i each had a backpack, a carry on roller bag, and we shared one standard checked bag. The gate agent did check on the size and weight of the roller bag but didn’t ask about the personal item and gave us tags without looking. The worst part was the boarding process. The passengers acted like rude animals, literally storming the gate agents (the contracted gate agents didn’t really do much to alleviate the crowd control either). It was really chaotic and we were a bit annoyed that someone had taken our seats overhead bin space as we were 1A and 1C and should have boarded the plane first. This wasn’t the airline’s fault, but was disappointing behavior to witness.
The overnight flight went great. They did serve a meal, which was fine, and most of the passengers went to sleep. Our premium seats were generously sized and we were able to sleep a bit so we weren’t crazy jet lagged. We arrived at CDG, took a shuttle to terminal 3, breezed through passport control, picked up our bags, and took a taxi to the hotel. Leg #1 a success!
We spent some time in Paris and flew separately to Italy via Air France, spent a few days on the coast and then took a train to Rome 24 hours before catching our plane home. Again, we had to check the FCO website to see where the check in desk would be, but luckily they are numbered, and all went very smoothly. My husband and I we’re able to hang out in a lounge with access from my credit card, so we only arrived to the gate about 20 minutes before boarding. It was a better managed situation than from NYC. The gate agents called by group number and actually enforced it when other groups crowded the gate entry. I will say that this plane was a little more worse for wear and several passengers had to move seats because they were broken and wouldn’t recline. 1 out of 2 of the meals were pretty good (the second one was a strange “snack” course with an olive/ham/fruit salad combo that I did not find appetizing).
Overall, I paid ~$2800 for 4 tickets. A quick look on Google flights looks like I would have easily doubled that on a worse seat on another airline. If you’re someone who can get to JFK on your own (we booked separate flights to get to and from JFK) and can get away with packing somewhat light, I think Norse is a good value. Overall, we had a good experience and would take them again in the future.

I made a FareLock reservation 6 days ago and I finally got paid, so I’m able to purchase the flight. Only problem is that I cannot find any way to do so. I have tried searching everywhere to access it, but haven’t figured it out. This is the only email I’ve received about it, and it’s from the day I made the reservation. I’ve tried looking up the receipt on the United website and there’s nothing. There’s no links on the email either. Any advice helps at this point. I have maybe 22 hours left until it expires.

We booked a Cabana Bay pool view family suite package via Costco Travel and the price was a pretty great deal. I enjoyed working with Costco Travel immensely!
SUNDAY
We arrived to the resort via the SuperStar Shuttle around 2pm. The SuperStar Shuttle wasn't anything exciting. The tvs didn't turn on and the driver didn't speak to the passengers. I thought it'd be like Disney's shuttles but alas. No biggie, though.
We checked in, zero wait there. We were assigned a room immediately in the Continental building, first section closest to the lobby on the 6th floor. We went to our room and it was fine. It felt dated, but the beds were soft and it was clean. There was an outside speaker directly below by the doors to Bayliner that was blaring music and it was loud in our room. Since it was only on during pool hours we sucked it up. We were barely going to be in the room anyway.We tried to take a quick nap since we had been up since 6am, but the music couldn't be drowned out via white noise. Thankfully in the couch area once we pulled the divider shut, it was barely noticeable and our 4 year old napped fine. Once she was awake, we headed to the pool. The pool was fun. Not super crowded, and we loved the lazy river. For dinner we ate at Hard Rock in CityWalk. Then we went to bed around 9:30. I learned the pullout couch my daughter was on was AWFUL. It was like sitting on 2x4s. However my 4 year old just slept on the extra pillows from the 2nd queen bed and she was perfectly fine.
MONDAY
We headed to the parks! We are not rope droppers at Disney nor here. We had breakfast at Bayliner Diner (mediocre) and left. We started in Seuss Landing where we rode everything. The longest wait was for the sneetches high in the sky ride and it was only 15 mins. We watched the live book show which was super cute.
Next was Jurassic Park. My 4 year old is only 40" so no rides here, but she thoroughly enjoyed Camp Jurassic. We stopped by the Discovery Center where my kiddo was chosen to name a baby trex. This put her on cloud 9. The discovery center was a lot of fun in itself!
We ate at Thunder Falls Terrance. The chicken was dry as chickenly possible. The corn on the cob and milkshakes were good though.
Next was Hogsmeade...something I was excited about. We first did the wand experience and then afterwards my daughter became hot mess express. She was not interested in WWoHP (how dare she.) So we took a break and relaxed a bit in some AC. After about an hour, we walked over to Universal Studios. We did the Minions ride then Villain Con. Loved both of them! When we left the minions ride, gru and 2 of his daughters were at the exit for meet and greets. When we left villain con and turned the corner, Kevin and Stuart were out for meet and greets. Universal doesn't disappoint with seeing characters! Next was Jimmy Fallon. It was alright.
We walked some circles, then our last ride was Kang and Kodos. On our way out, we saw the Animal Actors show started in 5 minutes so we grabbed a seat. The show was a lot of fun! Back at Cabana Bay we grabbed dinner at the Bayliner. The food was nothing to wrote home about as usual.
TUESDAY
Volcano Bay Day! Breakfast again at Bayliner. Still not great food, but whatever. We walked the short path over to the water park. My daughter is essentially a fish so she had a blast here. We've been to a lot of water parks and this is definitely one of the best, if not thee best. I like the condensed layout. We couldn't ride anything due to our shortie, but we had a blast. There was a severe t-storm that hit about 2 hours after we arrived. We were going to try and make it back to Cabana Bay, but the torrential downpour hit as soon as we exited. We sheltered under the entrance and after the storm passed (45min) we re-entered to a fairly empty park. Ate lunch there, swam, had a good time. We stayed until close and loved every minute. My in laws arrived this evening and checked into their (very quiet) room I. 1 section down from us. I was shocked they couldn't hear the music we could. We ate dinner at NBC bar at CityWalk which was delicious. That night we got some loud neighbors next to us, banging around and talking loudly. Sounded like a group of 20-somethings. They finally quieted down around 11.
WEDNESDAY
Back to the parks, but my kiddo spent the morning with her grandparents. My husband and I got to enjoy the rides. I LOVED the Jurassic River Adventure ride. However the long neck dino at the beginning might want to see a chiropractor for his messed up neck. We popped on over to Hogsmeade and took the train to Diagon Alley. There we grabbed lunch at The Leaky Cauldron - fish and chips. Delicious! We walked around Diagon Alley taking in the sights. It was not busy at all. We watched Celestina Warbeck sing and then I spent too much money on merch. We rode Escape from Gringotts and it was my favorite ride of the trip. We met back up with my in laws and headed back to the resort around 4. I cannot remember what we ate for dinner this evening. We had some pretty intense noise issues from our neighbors. Woke us up twice and my kid once. I have no idea what they were doing but I utilized the text service to which they responded they'd send a security officer to the room. They finally quieted down around 12:30am.
THURSDAY
I was done with the neighbors by this point so walked up to the front desk to see if we could switch rooms. She said yep, just need to pack up. Back to the room i walked. We left our kid at the pool with her grandparents and we packed up. Finally at 11:30 we were in a new room. It was completely quiet. No pool music noise at all. It was the furtherst building in the continental next to the tower, poolside. After getting settled again, back to Volcano Bay. I think our kid was absolutely whooped at this point. We should have done a no parks, rest at the resort day. It ended up being a bust since she cried and fussed most of the time. We came back to Cabana Bay around 3pm. We cleaned up and headed to CityWalk. We had dinner reservations at Toothsome and it was fabulous. Everything we ate was delicious. We spent the evening walking around CityWalk and shopping. That night we had no noise issues in our room, but the pool was packed since Gradventure had started. Middle schoolers everywhere!
FRIDAY
Last parks day. Mid-breakfast at Bayliner. We began the morning in Universal Studios where we met everyone. Betty Boop, Scooby-Doo Gang, Marilyn Monroe, Marge and Bart, Beetelgeuse. We did ET which I ADORED. I didn't expect to enjoy it so much. Then we went to the Bourne Stuntacular and it was mind blowing. My mouth was open the whole time. It ended up being our favorite show. Again, didn't expect to love it since I haven't seen a Bourne movie in ages but it was extremely well done. Next up we rode Transformers... no one was a fan of that one. We ate lunch at the Irish pub (can't remember the name). Service was bad. I think she forgot we existed, but food was food. Upon leaving we saw the Blues Bros show and took some pictures with the stilt walkers in front of the mummy ride. We met up with my in laws upon their exit from the horror makeup show and they took our kiddo back to Cabana Bay to swim around 330. My husband and I went to Kings Cross, waited about an hour with hordes of middle schoolers, then in Hogsmeade we grabbed some butterbeer. We rode flight of the hippogriff and trekked over to Jurassic Park again. We rode Kong after a 25 minute technical delay. We both didn't think it was worth the wait. By then the park was closing so we headed out. We picked up our daughter and went to Aventura across the street. Dinner there was delicious! Back at Cabana Bay we swam then fell asleep.
SATURDAY
check out day. Check out was easy. We had a late afternoon flight delayed by 4 hours due to storms but made it home around 10pm. SuperStar Shuttle was great. Our driver told us jokes and they played Rise of Gru on the tv. I'm now in post vacation blues mode :(
SUMMARY
I felt it hard to not compare to Disney since we've done Disney a lot minus COVID years. Disney's resorts were all cleaner, food was all better quality, and the overall atmosphere is more magical. We've stayed at 4 Disney resorts from economy to luxury and all were stellar. I found Cabana Bay to be lower quality than Pop Century at Disney.
Cons about Cabana Bay: The grounds were not well kept...cigarette butts everywhere. The pool area was trashed. I hate to say it but it was like the caliber of people in the resort just didnt care about litter or cleanliness. I watched families toss their trash in the sand and leave wet, used towels on the ground (towel returns were readily available.) When the pool closed, there were families that were literally arguing with the lifeguards because their watch said they still had 3 minutes. 2 families just berating the lifeguards!? Awkward. The Bayliner constantly had drink machines down and the food was blegh except for a few things. The pool was great but for some reason had no small youth life vests? Super weird. That would seem like the size you most need. The noise problems with room #1 put a damper on our nights, but the new room was great so that was just poor luck initially. More than once we entered an elevator that reeked of weed. I smoke weed, but it was a turn off to be in a hot elevator with it. Sofa beds are bad. I saw other people talk about this, too. Buy a topper!
Pros about Cabana Bay: transportation. Literally never waited longer than 5-10 min. Bus drivers were all so nice. The gift shop employees were delightful and the arcade and bowling alley were clean and an added bonus. The milkshakes from the malt shop were AMAZING!! The main pool was large and the slide and splash pad was great. Check in and ticket pick up was a breeze. The middle schoolers packed the resort beginning on Thursday, but the chaperones kept them in check so we were never bothered.
Final note... Going from CB to Aventura and Sapphire Falls across the street was like daylight and dark. Those 2 resorts were quiet and felt way more like Disney's moderate or luxury resorts: clean, peaceful, modern. I'd definitely stay in one of those next time.

This has been a saga that started in mid January and I am at my wits end dealing with pain and insurance…
34F dealing with debilitating lower back/hip/leg pain. I have ADHD (Adderall 30mg 2x/day) and IBS with gastritis. I also suspect I may have POTS and some form of hyper mobility or EDS but haven’t seen the rheumatologist yet. I am also in the maintenance phase of allergy shots going every other week.
In mid January I did something, probably trying to pick up my 100 lb lab and my back started bothering me. I ignored it until early March when I went on a weekend camping trip that required me to sit in a car for hours. The pain skyrocketed. The following weekend I had a wedding to travel to so I made a virtual appt with my doc where I told her I thought it may be proximal hamstring tendinopathy since my hamstring was bothering me the most and felt tight to my foot and she prescribed me cyclobenzaprine (I think 10mg) to survive the weekend and sent me to physical therapy as well as a lumbar spine X-ray.
The X-ray report comes back as unremarkable and I start pt at the end of March. My spring break was first week of April and I can barely get out of bed. I end up taking two weeks off work after that so I basically miss three weeks of work (I’m a teacher) and pt is not helping with pain. I was also switching back and forth between Tylenol and Advil but I have gastritis caused by NSAIDS and my stomach was starting to ache to I stopped the Advil. Also doing the stretching at home and ice and heat. I got an in person appt with another doc in my docs office April 10 and she puts in a request for a lumbar spine MRI and gives me a work note for a week.
I try to work on April 17th and pain is so severe I barely make it through the day. After pt I went to urgent care and they give me a Toradol shot and Valium and a new prescription of cyclobenzaprine. That was the first night I was pain free. On the 19th insurance denies MRI request because I had only done 5 weeks of pt and not 6… I see another doc in my docs office on the 19th and she prescribes me hydrocodone-acetaminophen 5-325mg to help with pain and says I can try a cane for mobility support. She also sends me to get a hip X-ray since my hip and butt is where I feel most of the pain and it comes back unremarkable as well. She also prescribed diclofenac sodium 1% gel as a topical cream for pain but insurance still hasn’t approved it.
I continue pt and did about 5 days of hydrocodone but the constipation was awful so I stopped taking it and saved it for bad moments. After the 6 weeks of pt was up they added on 8 more visits but it’s not helping anything. May 7th I’m back at urgent care with severe pain and they give me Valium and start me on 5 days of prednisone 40mg/day.
May 13 I see orthopaedic surgeon and he’s confident it’s a herniated disc. He puts me on 300mg of gabapentin (one week just at night and now I’m on it twice a day) and ordered another MRI. He’s said since I’ve done all the other things I’m probably looking at an epidural shot or surgery to shave off the bulging disc. I was reading that laying down too long is bad for herniated discs but idk what else to do. Sitting is the worst and I had two wedding events this weekend that caused me so much pain I can barely walk. I also read that gabapentin can take awhile to start working. Is there anything else I can be doing to help the pain?
It’s been 16 weeks now and I’m having anxiety attacks because of the level of pain I’m in. I’ve been taking Tylenol with the gabapentin because the pharmacist said to try not to mix the hydrocodone with it. I also have a trip at the end of June to Hawaii with my family and I’m worried about sitting on a plane for 6 hrs and then I have a cruise for a bachelorette weekend for my best friend and 11 hr flights to Ireland in July/august. I’m even willing to try unconventional treatments if they can help. The pain is absolutely horrific at times and I have never experienced an injury like this so I felt very lost navigating our messed up healthcare system. I will post xray pics in the comments and can include visit summary’s from the ortho surgeon and urgent care if necessary. If anyone has any tips or advice to help me that would be amazing.

It typically presents a brief, descriptive prose passage followed by a haiku that complements or contrasts with the prose. The prose and haiku work together to evoke a mood, capture a moment, or convey a sensory experience.
Key features of a haibun include:

1. Prose: The prose portion is usually concise and descriptive, capturing a scene or experience. It may contain personal reflections, observations, or a narrative.
   
2. Haiku: The haiku that follows the prose is traditionally three lines long, with a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. It often serves as a concise, poetic summary or complement to the prose.
   
3. Seasonal Reference: Haibun often includes a kigo, a word or phrase indicating the season or a seasonal reference, connecting the piece to nature.
   
4. Shift or Contrast: There may be a subtle shift or contrast between the prose and haiku, creating a deeper resonance or adding layers of meaning to the overall composition.

Summary

I competed for the first time at the USPA Drug Tested Emerald City Classic hosted by DOP Strength Gym in Kirkland, WA on May 18th, 2024.
Here's my Instagram post with videos of my third attempts and a photo with my participation medal (I was the only 110kg submaster male lifter).
I went 9/9 with no red lights, broke my gym PRs on squat and deadlift, and had an awesome time. I competed in the submaster 110kg class in raw full power, weighed in (24h before) at 105.7 kg, and totaled 545kg. I planned to take very light openers, big jumps for my second attempts (15kg for squat and deadlift, 10kg for bench), and then smaller jumps (7.5kg for squat and deadlift, 5kg for bench) for my thirds, and I stuck to that plan. All of my lifts felt great and moved fast except for my third bench, which was a little bit of a grind. My strategy paid off because I had a much more enjoyable day going 9/9 a little light, compared to how I would have felt if I had missed any of my first or second attempts--which I saw happen to plenty of other lifters.
The gym was a little crowded with 60 lifters in 4 flights but the meet was super well run, with good vibes all around. The meet director was super clear at the rules briefing and the spotteloader crew absolutely hauled ass and the whole meet was over at 3 pm. I also got to see several master's lifters set state and national records, including a 72 year old woman, so that was awesome to watch.
My friend and training partner, who is an experienced master's lifter and meet judge, showed up to handle me and that made a huge difference in my experience. He really helped me a ton with understanding the pace, timing my warmups, loading the bar, chalking my back, cheering me on, telling me when to rest, eat, hydrate, everything. He really did a fantastic job.

Prep

I took Steve DeNovi's free 3x Bench - Conventional Deadlift program and ran Block 3 and the peaking block (10 weeks), with modifications to the accessory selection and split to make it 4 days a week. My weekly split was:

• Mon: Primary squat, OHP, pull ups, bicep curls
• Tue: Primary bench, secondary deadlift (cluster singles), chest supported rows, face pulls, tricep pushdowns
• Thu: Secondary squat, paused squat, tertiary bench (Larsen press), lat pulldowns, DB incline press
• Fri: Primary deadlift, paused deadlift, secondary bench, bent over rows, lateral raises

I really enjoyed this program and got a lot out of it. I felt like the peak timing was just right for my meet.

Squat

Squats felt great in prep. My training max for the first block was 425 lbs and I upped it to 435 for the second block. I didn't feel like I under or overshot any of my prep lifts, my RPEs felt accurate.
There was a little confusion about whether squats would be done on a 25kg squat bar or a 20kg power bar, but they ended up using the 20kg Kabuki power bar. The knurling felt great on my back.

1. 170kg. The main thing in my head was to take my time setting up, which I did, and I think it helped calm my nerves. When I unracked, the bar tilted to the right slightly, but I was able to level it out as I walked out. Stance felt solid, got a strong brace, weight felt light and moved fast.
2. 185kg. Better unrack. Felt lighter than I expected.
3. 192.5kg. Beat my gym PR of 415lbs. My handler said my third looked like it moved better than my second. I felt a cramp in my right inner hamstring as I locked it out though, and it's feeling sore today. I felt in control the whole rep but I think I kinda dive-bombed it and went a little too deep and that over-stretched my hammie. Looking back at the videos, I think I rushed the descent on all my squats, even though I had been practicing a slower descent during prep. Something to work on cleaning up before my next meet.

Bench

I kind of wrote off bench for this meet since I made poor progress in prep. For the first 5 week block my training max was 265 lbs and I felt like I was undershooting, so I increased it to 275 lbs, but once I started hitting singles at 250+ they weren't moving well and my butt started coming off the bench. I fixed that issue late in prep by setting my feet further back. My left shoulder had also been bothering me a bit lately, plus I started getting some tennis elbow on my left from the bent over rows or something. So I went with attempts I knew for sure I could hit, and didn't get too excited for bench. I also really felt that bench was a natural "valley" between the peaks of squat and deadlift, in terms of the energy level of the meet.

1. 100kg. A gimme attempt just to practice the commands for real.
2. 110kg. This was the best bench single I've had lately--setup, foot placement, arch, unrack, controlled descent, pause, and press, everything felt solid and it went up so fast that my friend who was working the scoring table shouted "Put some weight on the bar!"
3. 115kg. Unrack felt great, controlled eccentric and pause felt good, got a fast press command, but I think my back slipped a little on the pad, which was kind of slick, and I didn't get enough leg drive, and forgot to cue bar path, so I pressed it straight up off my chest and hit a sticking point, then my back cramped up and my arms started shaking. I barely got it locked out. I originally wanted to aim for 120kg on my third attempt but now I'm glad I didn't because I for sure would have missed it.

I'm pretty satisfied with just getting 9 white lights on bench because I was so worried about my butt popping up or having a brain fart and jumping the start or rack command, and those things didn't happen.

Deadlift

Deadlifts are my best event (long arms) and the pauses and cluster singles in DeNovi's program really helped dial in my setup and make me stronger off the floor. Having access to a deadlift bar in training was nice, as the whip might have thrown me off if I had only ever trained on a stiff bar. Liquid chalk + hook grip + Kabuki bar = unlimited grip.
Toward the end of prep I changed my setup to get rid of my dynamic "hip pump" wedge and just sink straight into my starting position, set my hook grip, and just patiently "leg press the floor away." This change really paid off because it helped me get the most out of the deadlift bar and made my lockouts a breeze.
I was worried about the back cramp during my third bench interfering with my deadlift, but as I started warming up, my back felt fine, however I was feeling that third squat in my right hamstring. Thankfully the pain subsided once I got warm again.

1. 215kg. Felt light, as it should have, like a last warmup. Not much else to say.
2. 230kg. My handler said "earn your third attempt!" I executed my setup and pull exactly like my first attempt and was surprised by how fast it broke the floor and how easy the lockout was. I heard someone say "that's a good hinge!"
3. 237.5kg. I almost went for 240 but kept it conservative because I was worried about my hamstring. I kinda regret holding back now. I took a couple extra seconds to build up a really hard brace before methodically executing my setup. Just as the bar passed my knees they shook a little, and the crowd started cheering for me, but the bar didn't slow down at all so I knew I had it in the bag for 9/9 and just felt ecstatic.

A spectator walked up to me afterward and gave me a really good compliment--he said my deadlifts looked like a hydraulic machine!

Next steps

Now that this meet's behind me, my main training priority will be getting my bench up. I'm going to reevaluate my approach to frequency, volume, specific vs. hypertrophy work, and my diet.
For squat, I think I'll continue doing pauses and maybe add tempo descent work or something to break my dive-bombing habit because I don't want to pull a hammy with a heavier weight at my next meet.
My deadlift feels locked in, so I'm not going to fix what isn't broken. I want to work in some RDLs in my offseason since I haven't done them in a while, but that's it.
There's another USPA meet at the same venue in late September which is kinda soon but I'm really tempted to do it so I can go in more confident, open a little higher, set some new meet PRs, and get my money's worth with this USPA membership. It's about 17 weeks away now so that's enough time to have a few weeks of offseason before another prep cycle.
