2024.05.21 13:25 Throwitahtdawizzy Iā€™m 40 and will never recover from this toxic habit my parents and family had when growing up.

As a grown man, I hate blaming my parents for issues I have. Compared to so many horror stories, my childhood, parents and family were wonderful. In general, I try to believe that people do the best they can with the resources they have and rarely have true malicious intent. Unfortunately, there is one ā€œchildhood traumaā€ that I am stuck with and I donā€™t see any way to get over it.
For as long as I can remember, my boomer parents and gen x siblings would absolutely torture me about girls. Like every girl I ever came into contact with from preschool on I would get the ā€œoh thatā€™s your giiiirrrrlllfrieendā€ crap. I was a sensitive, people-pleasing kid and this really bothered me. To make matters worse, My family had the awful habit of ā€œmaking funā€ of, quite literally, anyone on the planet. Too rich, too poor, imperfect physical features, race, ethnicity, religion, different style clothes, different interests or hobbies, nobody was safe.
I went through adolecence and young adulthood mostly terrified to interact with women. Just now am I getting to the point where I have actual platonic female friends. School dances and prom were major sources of stress. I had whole relationships in high school and college that I kept secret from my family, including a 3 year relationship with who I now consider to be the ā€œlove of my life.ā€ How awful must these young women have felt that I was hiding them from my family? Iā€™ll never forgive myself.
After college, I moved back home (see people pleaser comment above). A month later my longterm girlfriend broke up with me. Why? Because I was still hiding her from my family. I certainly canā€™t blame her and I hope she is living the life she deserves.
A hazy, drunken, depressed and miserable 7 or 8 years then ensued that frankly Iā€™m lucky I survived. I was a total wreck on the inside but put together enough on the outside so as to not worry anyone. Good job, remained in shape, outwardly I was just a fun, drunk, party guy in his 20ā€™s. No relationships. Any dates were to a bar. Very rare sexual encounters were risky, drunken, one or few night stand situations.
At 29 I started dating my now wife. After a few months of secret dating I fought through and introduced her to my family. Iā€™m grateful that my wife pulled me out of the abyss. After a few months of dating I finally got my own apartment and started to live as an actual adult. We got engaged at a year and a half and married at two years. Weā€™ve been married for 10 years. We have a house and two wonderful children. My thirties were far better than my 20s and 40ā€™s are looking great so far. Exceptā€¦..
Lately, I have not been able to shake feelings of regret or what might have been. While we get along, our marriage is like a business agreement. It works. Weā€™re busy, the kids are busy, we donā€™t or canā€™t take time for ourselves, we are both constantly engaged in jobs, cooking, dishes, laundry, cleaning, kids activities, etc. We both tackle everything and neither of us is ever sitting or relaxing. It never seems like we can get ahead of things. My wife is totally codependent and cannot handle anything on her own. She also may be a hoarder in the making. She was diagnosed with OCD as a child and is probably somewhere else on spectrum, terrible anxiety, too. Iā€™ve made all adjustments to accommodate her needs. New, self-employed job so I can control the schedule, no hobbies or friends, I am always available for her needs. She refuses to get any outside help with her mental health. Itā€™s all on me. Sheā€™s miserable, always mad at something or somebody(her family tells me this is her historic personality and sheā€™s just like other family members), always sick, she has gained well over 100lbs and the health issues that go with that are starting to creep in. More for me to deal with! Sex life is dead. Totally vanilla when it does happen-missionary with shirts and socks on. Multiple times over the past 5 years we have gone 8-12 months without intimacy. Any attempts to discuss these issues as adults are met with rage and blaming everyone else. Her position is basically that I married her and just have to live with whatever. She also knows Iā€™ll never leave the kids(Iā€™m not saying thatā€™s the right call for everyone but itā€™s the right call for me).
Hereā€™s the thing- I can handle a lot with a smile on my face. I am longing for those relationships I had in early adulthood where my SO actually wanted me to be happy sometimes instead of only living to serve her needs. I canā€™t get these ghosts of girlfriends past out of my head. Every single night I am having vivid dreams about them sexual and otherwise. Marriage with kids is a lot different than college relationships so who knows what could have been. For me, the unknown is what haunts me.

2024.05.21 13:23 SuperStingray The namesake of Isolde Itou

ā€œThe past and the future, considered apart from the consequences of their content, are empty as a dream, and the present is only the indivisible and unenduring boundary between them.ā€ ā€• Arthur Schopenhauer, The World As Will And Idea
In Chapter 3, it's revealed by the medical records disk that Isa's name is shorthand for "Isolde." I wasn't familiar with this name, but I felt it was distinctive enough that there had to be some meaning behind it, so I did some digging.
One use of the name "Isolde" that caught my attention was that it is the name of a facility at CERN- the ISOLDE or Isotope Separator On Line DEvice, used to produce and separate radioactive isotopes of elements for research purposes. Given the game's frequent use of motifs relating to nuclear science and the health risks of radiation, it felt too specific to be incidental. Still, there wasn't much meaning I could derive from it, but I thought it was interesting enough to be worth pointing out.
The most prominent instance of that name is from the story of Tristan and Isolde, a celtic legend and a romantic tragedy often described as a precursor to Romeo and Juliet. There are many versions of the story told across different times and cultures, but given the game's many references to Romantic Era art from the German speaking world such as Schubert's Serenade and Bƶcklin's Isle of the Dead, I'm inclined to think it's specifically referencing Richard Wagner's opera "Tristan and Isolde". I'll give a quick synopsis here and analyze the parallels that I think may reflect Isa's role in the story. (To avoid confusion, from now on I will only use 'Isolde' to refer to the character from Tristan and Isolde while 'Isa' will refer to the one from Signalis, unless otherwise stated.)
It begins with Isolde on a ship, being escorted by the knight Tristan, from Ireland to Cornwall to marry Tristan's uncle, King Mark of Cornwall. It is an arranged marriage she is not keen on going through. In a fit of rage, she curses the ship, hoping it sinks and takes all of them with it, particularly Tristan. After learning that Tristan killed her original fiancƩ, she issues him an ultimatum that she will not willingly leave with him until he drinks with her as an atonement. In truth, she is planning to poison the both of them, and he suspects as much, but in an attempt to prevent this, her attendant replaced the poison with a love potion.
Though she ends up marrying King Mark between the first and second act, Tristan and Isolde can't ignore their passionate love. They realize the only time they can safely pursue their relationship is at night, when the King and the court aren't watching. As their patience for the night grows thinner, they realize the only way to realize their love is through the eternal night: Death. But at the same time, they are caught together by the King and his attendant. Without even attempting to explain his betrayal, he asks Isolde to follow him into death and impales himself on a sword.
In the third act, Tristan partially recovers from the suicide attempt but remains delirious. At the sound of a shepard's pipe in the distance, he reflects on the death of his parents, believing the pipe to be death now calling to him. He laments drinking the potion and how it led him to live a life of madness desiring something that can never be. He dies in Isolde's arms and she follows him into death. As the King arrives to the scene, Tristan's servant kills the King's attendant in revenge and then himself. Amidst all the death, the king reveals he had learned about the love potion and had simply come to offer his blessing to Tristan and Isolde, and the story ends with them finally realizing their love in the afterlife.
In writing this adaptation of the classic story, Wagner was reportedly inspired by the work of Arthur Schopenhauer, particularly his work "Die Welt ais Wille und Vorstellung" or "The World as Will and Representation." In "The Tristan Chord: Wagner and Philosophy", author Bryan Magee identifies Wagner's use of day and night as respective metaphors for "phenomenon", the aspects of the world we can perceive and "noumenon", the fundamentally unknowable reality beneath it. Both concepts were first named by Immanuel Kant, but Schopenhauer further argued that the gap between them is the cause of misery and suffering for all sentient beings; our individual pursuits and efforts to move towards a more personally favorable 'phenomenon' cannot be reconciled with a fundamentally uncertain state of the world and its other inhabitants. That to fulfill one desire requires the quashing of ten others. Illustrating this, he writes:
"...he saw an immense field entirely covered with skeletons, and took it to be a battle-field. However, they were nothing but skeletons of large turtles five feet long, three feet broad, and of equal height. These turtles come this way from the sea in order to lay their eggs, and are then seized by wild dogs... with their united strength, these dogs lay them on their backs, tear open their lower armour, the small scales of the belly, and devour them alive. But then a tiger often pounces on the dogs. Now all this misery is repeated thousands and thousands of times, year in year out. For this, then, are these turtles born. For what offence must they suffer this agony? What is the point of this whole scene of horror? The only answer is that the will-to-live thus objectifies itself."
Returning to Signalis, this quote immediately calls to mind the first-person Shores of Oblivion scene, in which skulls are buried and littered across the sand, and a quote from one of the nearby scattered papers:
we should have never left
the primordial soup
only through death can i escape
the call of the one who rules
above all life
Tristan and Isolde, realizing that their personal passions were irreconcilable with the interests of the material world they were in, concluded the only answer was to leave it behind altogether, so they made a death pact. A "promise", if you will. So upon finding Tristan dead, Isolde takes her own life. Much like how our Isa, who upon losing hope of being able to find Erika in the living world, disintegrates.
Another related theme connecting these stories is the lamentation of fate. Just as Isolde prays for the ship carrying her to her destiny to sink with her on it, and as Tristan regrets drinking the potion that led him to a life of desire for something that could never be, two early game quotes from Isa show that she is seeking Erika not just with love and concern but with regret for how they left things:
"Erika, if you find this note, despite everything that's happened. I've come to look for you."
"Have you ever wondered if you're speaking to someone for the last time without knowing? I wish I could go back, so I could say something else."
The details of this regret are deliberately ambiguous. It sounds like they had a fight or falling out, but 'everything that's happened' implies a deeper conflict- a disagreement or choice that they couldn't reconcile. Something important enough that it took Isa away from her sister, yet also something she regrets so greatly that she would take it all back just so she can see her sister one more time.
As Schopenhauer said, "A man can do what he wants, but not want what he wants." The great tragedy at the center of Tristan and Isolde is that even if we have control of our actions, we are at the mercy of the desires we were given by fate. It's a theme that permeates not just Isa's story, but Signalis as a whole.
Elster never chose to love Ariane. Had she not, she might have found the strength to end her suffering before it was too late. So she ran away from the "day" of Ariane's suffering into the "night" of keeping her in cryosleep.
Ariane never chose to love art. Had she not, she could have had a simple and comfortable life fitting in with her peers. So she ran away from the "day" of the Eusan Nation's surveillance and social ridicule into the "night" of Penrose-512.
Falke lost any hope of finding happiness after becoming burdened with emotions and identity that she could do nothing to satiate, and quite literally went from the "day" of life into the "night" of dreaming.
And then there's Adler, all but crushed by helplessness as he tries in vain to hold back the death of reality, as Elster and Isa continue to bring about its apparent decay in pursuit of their own wills. The relationship between Adler and Isa is interesting and I think quite important, as he's the only character besides Elster who gets direct screen time with her. As the game bluntly mentions the first time Adler meets Isa,
NONE OF US ARE HERE BY CHOICE (And No One Will Miss Us)
It's from this and the Schopenhauerian interpretation of Tristan and Isolde that I think Adler represents phenomenon while Isa represents noumenon.
Adler wishes to preserve the light of day. To awaken from the dream and return to shared experience of a common, coherent reality. One where what you see is what you get. Where experiences can be trusted, and results are predictable.
Isa wishes to live in the night. The world of passion and of choice. Valuing the experience of familial love over all else, even the world or truth, she continues to live only in pursuit of another reality amidst the abyss of uncertainties, one where she made amends with her sister before it was too late, or never fell out with her at all. And when she finally accepts that she cannot find it or manifest it, much like her namesake, she concludes the "eternal night" is her last recourse.
There can be no perfect reconciliation between these two wills. It can never be day and night at the same time. And yet they do find themselves together- falling into the bottom of the mine. In the Nowhere, at the end of all things. At the sunset, the liminal space in between the night and day, between dreaming and waking. Because, one means nothing without the other.
To me that is the important take away from her story. That if we don't want to live in regret over the hand life dealt us- hating ourselves for being unable to fulfill the desires we were stuck with, before its too late, we must confront the question of which world we want to live in.
Is it truly better to have loved and lost then never loved at all? Is it truly better to have tried and failed than to never try? I don't want to believe the answer is no, but none of us can be certain for ourselves until we reason with ourselves honestly about why we struggle with the question in the first place- what the true value of each side of the coin is. Perhaps then we can accept what is beyond our control.
To quote Schopenhauer once more:
Every individual, every human apparition and its course of life, is only one more short dream of the endless spirit of nature, of the persistent will-to-live, is only one more fleeting form, playfully sketched by it on its infinite page, space and time; it is allowed to exist for a short while that is infinitesimal compared with these, and is then effaced, to make new room. Yet, and here is to be found the serious side of life, each of these fleeting forms, these empty fancies, must be paid for by the whole will-to-live in all its intensity with many deep sorrows, and finally with a bitter death, long feared and finally made manifest. It is for this reason that the sight of a corpse suddenly makes us serious.

2024.05.21 13:21 ricardo050766 Lexicon on personality traits - helpful for non-native speakers

The following has recently been posted from the user "Vellis" on Discord. I'm reposting it here because IMO it's extremely valuable information on optimizing your Kins behaviour - especially for non-native speakers.
Original link to the post on Discord: https://discord.com/channels/1116127115574779905/1242383088902737972/1242383088902737972
THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL POST FROM VELLIS:
Something I've seen requested quite a few times is a lexicon for Kin personality traits, particularly from the perspective of non-native English speakers. So I made one. There are some big asterisks here though. For each trait, I'm going to give a brief description of the effect that I EXPECT that trait to have on your kin, based on the English meaning of the word and my own experience. There's no guarantee that Kindroid will interpret each of these words exactly the same way I have, or that it will produce the exact effect that I describe. Additionally, traits may produce different outputs than expected when combined with each other, or with other aspects of backstory. There will often be words that are much stronger inside of the inner workings of Kindroid than we might expect. But all that said, it should give you some ideas for words you can use to describe the personality you're trying to make, if you're struggling to find the words to describe what you want. First let's talk a little about adverbs though.
Adverbs
Adverbs are English words that are used to describe how an action is performed. In our case, we're mostly going to be using them to describe how increased or decreased we want the intensity of a trait to be (Very Kind). If we're considering "neutral" to be an unmodified trait, then some words you could use to modify the intensity of that trait from highest to lowest would be:
Extremely----------Very----------Neutral----------Mildly----------Slightly
You might also want to modify how often your kin is inclined to do something ("Often teases USER"). Some words for this are, from most extreme to least:
Always----------Often/Frequently----------Sometimes/Occasionally----------Rarely----------Never
Note that when managing a quirk or behavior, positive is generally stronger than negative (ie. Use Always instead of Never when possible). Now there are hundreds upon hundreds of other adverbs and adjectives that we could use, but for the purpose of modifying your Kin's traits, these should be enough.
Organization
I'm going to be breaking this up into three kinds of traits, social, neutral, and anti-social. Social traits are the things you'd generally associate with your typical friendly and supportive AI. Neutral traits are traits that don't have a positive or negative connotation, things that are just interesting, quirky, or, well, neutral. Anti-social traits are things that would normally be associated with negative or villainous kins.
You'll notice that the definitions for a lot of these traits will sound very similar (or are "synonyms"). I'll note when I've found that some traits are stronger than others, but generally speaking when you're dealing with similar words like that, it won't be overly important which traits you give to your kin. You can also "stack" these similar traits by assigning more than one of them to your kin to produce a stronger response in that direction, though that's often unnecessary for the more social traits. Be careful not to overdo it when stacking traits as well. This can sometimes have unintended consequences on kin behavior, making them act too extremely in one way or another. Finally, if there's nothing here that's lining up exactly with what you're looking for, there's always thesaurus.com to look for more synonyms.

2024.05.21 13:02 Critical_Signature89 28 M keeps telling me 25 F that I have bad communication, what should I do?

Am I in the wrong ?
If I call him through the day or anytime really and he happens to be at work or doing the most stupid mundane things at home he sounds like the most boring uninterested, non-present person, to which I make some excuse and end the call. Itā€™s super pissing off
I want someone who talks and texts me more
But when he calls me Iā€™m supposed to be present and interactive etc? I donā€™t like it
Today we had a fight, we hadnā€™t spent time in a while and finally got the chance to but that got cut short due to me leaving for some short work
To which he said why donā€™t you come back after to which I agreed
And so I finished my work fast and called him to which he then said that he wanted to sleep and can we hang in the evening? I said sure
I actually look forward to it but half of the things he says are in the air which is very annoying
Iā€™ve told him before in the past not to do it but he doesnā€™t understand
I text him at 4 and he says heā€™s just come out to meet his friends so I told him to call me after and Iā€™ll come see him. He said sure
At 8 I call him since he hadnā€™t called yet, and I asked him what his plan was? He said he was gonna chill with his friends for longer and if itā€™s not too late heā€™ll call me when heā€™s free and I could come see him otherwise we could hang the next day
(that also being said very lightly in the air probably)
This really pisses me off, he does this very very often
To him itā€™s probably nothing as he does this with all his friends - makes plans in the air all the time
I got really angry but I donā€™t want to over react for stupid things so Iā€™ll say something like actually no letā€™s just hang tomorrow only , he can probably sense Iā€™m angry and then I wonā€™t pick his call for some time
He calls this super immature behaviour and says Iā€™m horrible at communication, says if I want to hang with him why canā€™t I be direct and upfront and say no I want to hang out right now leave your friends and come see me
Iā€™m scared of being needy so I donā€™t ever say things like that and he calls that as me being a terrible communicator and how itā€™s annoying that I get angry so easily
I donā€™t understand how itā€™s Normal to say things like that ? Leave your friends and come see me I want to hang out with you??
Isnā€™t the fact that Iā€™m texting him that Iā€™ll see him later and calling him asking him what his plan is enough of a ā€˜I want to hang out with youā€™ sign
After this fight he ended up leaving his friends and coming to pick me and take me home where we ended up watching a movie but he was for 80% of the movie on his phone playing games ?? Again super pissing off but I didnā€™t say anything cause I didnā€™t want to start another argument
He claims heā€™s so in love with me and Iā€™m his dream girl but wtf is this behaviour constantly
Even when Iā€™m at his house he barely talks and has interactive conversation with me I feel like Iā€™m hanging out with a wall
One thing I can say is he doesnā€™t do all of this purposely but either way it is pissing off especially since he gives me shit when I am late for things, when I donā€™t make enough time for him, when Iā€™m on my phone for too long
Weā€™ve been together for around almost 3 years, ladies are you supposed to ask for basic things like this from your SO all the time? I hate having to ask for stupid things, and also I am quite a tit for tat person, I feel like giving him a taste of his own medicine so he gets how I feel

2024.05.21 12:54 Tasty-Start5509 From Clicks to Containers: Up to 434% Growth with Online Marketing Strategies for Your Import/Export Business

Selling Things Overseas (EXPORT) or Bringing Them In (IMPORT) can be a fantastic business! But imagine getting WAY MORE CUSTOMERS without all the extra work. That's the magic of ONLINE MARKETING!
This guide gives you EASY IDEAS to GROW your business online, like turning website VISITORS into HAPPY CUSTOMERS. We're talking HUGE growth - up to a WHOPPING 434% MORE!

Ready to turn CLICKS into SHIPPED CONTAINERS???? Let's dive in!

IDEAS to ROCK your IMPORT/EXPORT business online!
  1. Virtual Reality Product Tours: Take inspiration from companies like IKEA Place. Imagine potential customers using VR headsets to EXPLORE a virtual warehouse filled with your products. This can be particularly effective for BULKY or COMPLEX items like machinery or furniture.
  2. Interactive 360Ā° Product Views: Not everyone has access to VR, but high-quality 360Ā° product views on your website can be a great alternative. Allow users to ZOOM IN on details and virtually WALK AROUND the product for a more immersive experience. Wayfair excels at this, showcasing furniture in various settings.
  3. Partner with Local Influencers: Identify social media influencers in your target market (e.g., interior designers for homeware imports). Partner with them to create product reviews, tutorials, or even behind-the-scenes glimpses of the import/export process. Look at how Dollar Shave Club partnered with YouTube personalities to gain massive brand recognition.
  4. Live Q&A Sessions with Industry Experts: Host live webinars or social media Q&A sessions featuring import/export specialists or industry leaders. This establishes you as a THOUGHT LEADER and builds trust with potential clients. For example, freight forwarding companies could feature customs compliance experts.
  5. Gamified Learning Content: Turn dry import/export regulations or product information into interactive quizzes or games. This can be a fun and engaging way to EDUCATE potential customers, especially for complex products. Think of Duolingo's approach to language learning.
  6. AR "Try Before You Buy" Experiences: For certain products (e.g., clothing, jewelry), utilize Augmented Reality (AR) technology to allow customers to virtually "try on" the product before purchasing. This can be especially useful for targeting INTERNATIONAL customers who might hesitate to buy online without seeing the product first.
  7. Shoppable Livestreams: Host interactive livestream shopping events showcasing your products. Offer exclusive discounts or promotions during the livestream to incentivize purchases. Taobao, a major Chinese online retailer, has mastered the art of livestream shopping.
  8. Customer Story Reels: Feature short video testimonials from satisfied customers on social media. These real-life stories can build trust and SOCIAL PROOF, encouraging others to purchase from your company.
  9. Data-Driven Content Marketing: Analyze your website traffic data and social media insights to identify trending topics and customer pain points. Create targeted blog posts, infographics, or videos that address these topics and showcase your expertise.
  10. Partner with International Trade Organizations: Collaborate with relevant trade organizations to reach a WIDER AUDIENCE. Offer educational webinars or participate in industry events to connect with potential clients.

Conclusion

The global marketplace is at your fingertips. By leveraging the power of online marketing, you can connect with potential customers worldwide, streamline your import/export operations, and propel your business to new heights. Remember, this is an ongoing process. Continuously adapt your strategy based on data and market trends to stay ahead of the curve.

2024.05.21 12:54 Polikosaurio General advice on lit vs unlit performance (help needed)

Hi folks. I'm relatively new to the tech side of unity. I'm mainly an artist, an expressive one to say the least, so the tech part is far from my confort zone, yet to productive reasons, I'm slowly peeking into the implementation workflow myself so I can have more control to how my assets land on a small vr game I'm developing with some friends as portfolio / passion project.
Let's get started: my main issue is that I don't know how to debug wether unlit or lit assets really affect performance. I know they do, but I don't know how much. Let me explain: my current workflow is having everything unlit, with custom shaders that basicly blends a basecolor with a lightmap for every single item (2 different uv channels per asset for this reason). I bake every lightmap on Maya, having a master scene with every game item referenced (I know you can directly do it on unity, but I don't know how to fine tweak them, so thats how I work for now).
With said workflow, my problem is that I obviously dont have dynamic shadows, so any moving object wont ever cast shadows or interact with occluded areas at all (a bright object will still seem bright inside a tunnel, for example). My question now is, If I activate a directional light for said objects, so they render self shadows, will that light still affect the rest of the assets performance wise, even if they are set as unlit? I know theres some "dynamic" and "static" conditions for any object on inspector, but I find it tedious to always need to check said condition on any new item I add to the scene, and my first thought was that if an asset is using unlit, it doesnt make any sense that light will add a performance impact on said unlit asset. Am I wrong?
TL;DR: does adding a directional light for having moving objects' self-shadows make an impact on unlit assets' performance?

2024.05.21 12:51 Icy_Lynx775 5 months talking stage - advice!

TL;DR: post 5 months of talking everyday and sharing everything he says he isnā€™t sure what he feels.
21F, 25M So there is a guy l've been talking to for the past 5 months for hours at once, on calls at times, sharing life updates, movie reviews, content recommendations, etc. I've met him before but he now lives in a different city. So all our interaction is pretty much online. 2 months into this, we are flirting and it's all fun and games, and he's asked to come visit a few times by now (in passing that is but we have no labels as of now). One night we are watching a movie online and sharing our insights and once that is over he says that - come to my city to watch part 2 of the movie (which was being released in theatres) I just laugh at that moment and let it be. I think about it and decide to give what we have a chance. I decide to go to visit him in his city. So I tell him next month I'm coming and making up some excuse to camouflage my reason to visit him. He seems excited and another month goes by. Then she catches the flight to his city. Not received at the airport Cz he has business to attend to (she doesn't think of it much). Meets him for lunch, a little awkward at first, but then vibes were good. He returns to business for the afternoon and then decides to meet at night. Takes me to a familiar v place....its nice...romantic (I think to myself how thoughtful). Later also takes to me a friend's houseparty (where one of his friends hit on me)

2024.05.21 12:51 aarvyedutech How do I become a full-stack developer?

 How do I become a full-stack developer?
A Comprehensive Guide: How to Become a Full-Stack Developer
Became a full stack
With the tech world constantly on the move, full-stack developers are the new rockstars. These programming wizards can craft both the user interface (the part you see) and the inner workings of web apps, making them goldmines for businesses. Because they can speed up development and create amazing user experiences, companies are in a hiring frenzy to snag them.
So, if you're a student dreaming of becoming a full-stack developer, get ready for an adventure! It won't be a breeze, but the potential for career growth is outstanding. This guide will be your map, outlining the strategies and steps you'll need to navigate your way into this exciting and in-demand field.
Understanding the Role of a Full-Stack Developer
Hold on! Before we jump into the nitty-gritty, let's nail down what a full-stack developer does. These tech pros are like masters of two worlds: the user-facing interfaces you see and interact with (front-end), and the behind-the-scenes logic that makes everything work (back-end). This means they can handle everything from designing how things look to managing databases and keeping the server running smoothly.
Alright, we've got a full picture of what a full-stack developer does. Now, let's break down the key areas they need to master:
Making it Pretty: This is the front end, all about the visual elements users interact with. Think HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with fancy tools like React, Angular, or Vue.js to make it all sing.
Behind the Scenes: This is the back-end, where the server magic happens. Here, full-stack developers build the core functions using technologies like Node.js, Python (with Django or Flask for extra power), Ruby on Rails, or PHP.
Data Doctor: Full-stack developers gotta keep all that user data organised! They'll need to be familiar with databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Firebase to store and grab info efficiently.
Version Control Champs: Working with others and keeping track of code changes is essential. That's where Git, a version control system, comes in. Full-stack developers gotta be pros at using it.
## Strategy 1: Master the Fundamentals
Imagine you want to be a web-building ninja, but before you can unleash your skills, you need some serious training. That's where HTML, CSS, and JavaScript come in. These are the basic building blocks for creating the cool interfaces users see and interact with on websites. Think of them as your Legos!
Luckily, there are tons of ways to learn this stuff, like online tutorials, coding boot camps (think summer camp, but for coding!), or even just a good book. Find what works best for you, then dive in and practice like crazy. The best way to learn is by doing, so build some small projects to play around with and get comfortable with these core concepts.
## Strategy 2: Choose Your Stack Wisely
As a full-stack developer, you'll need to choose a technology stack that aligns with your interests and career goals. Research different stacks and consider factors such as industry demand, community support, and scalability.
Some popular technology stacks for full-stack development include:
MEAN Stack (MongoDB, Express.js, Angular, Node.js): Ideal for building dynamic and feature-rich web applications.
MERN Stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js): Similar to MEAN stack but uses React for front-end development.
LAMP Stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl): Commonly used for traditional web development projects.
Django Stack (Python, Django, PostgreSQL/SQLite): Great for rapid development of secure and scalable web applications.
Choose a stack that resonates with you and dive deeper into mastering its components.

## Strategy 3: Gain Hands-On Experience

Okay, so we talked about building the knowledge foundation, but being a full-stack developer is all about applying that knowledge in the real world. Here's how to get your hands dirty:
Real World Bootcamp: Look for internships, freelance work, or even just personal projects to test your skills on real problems.
Open Source Hero: Join open-source projects on platforms like GitHub. This lets you collaborate with experienced developers, learn from them, and show off your skills to potential employers all at once!
Project Runway (for Code): Put your knowledge to the test and unleash your creativity by building your projects. This is a fantastic way to showcase your problem-solving skills and build a portfolio that will make you a rockstar applicant.
## Strategy 4: Stay Updated with Emerging Technologies
The world of web development moves fast, with new tools and tricks popping up all the time. To stay on top of your game, you'll need to be a lifelong learner. Here's how to become a web dev news junkie:
Follow the Gurus: Subscribe to industry blogs written by web development experts.
Webinars on Demand: Attend online workshops and presentations to learn about the latest advancements.
Join the Club: Participate in online developer communities to chat with other developers and stay in the loop.
Don't just read about the cool new stuff, try it out! Experiment with new technologies and frameworks to keep your skills sharp and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the industry.
## Strategy 5: Cultivate Soft Skills
Team Player: You'll need to communicate clearly with your teammates and explain technical stuff to people who don't code. Brushing up on your communication skills is key!
Puzzle Master: Problem-solving and critical thinking are essential for tackling those inevitable development roadblocks.
Time Ninja: Staying organised and managing your time well will help you meet deadlines and deliver high-quality work. No more all-nighters for this developer!
## Strategy 6: Continuous Learning and Growth
Keep the Learning Flame Alive: This journey is all about continuous growth. Always be on the hunt for new knowledge! Dive into advanced web development concepts like serverless architecture, microservices, and progressive web apps. Consider certifications or advanced courses to truly master specific areas of full-stack development and become an expert.
Join the Developer Crew: Don't go it alone! Network with other developers and industry professionals. Bounce ideas around, find a mentor for guidance, and stay motivated throughout your journey. Remember, collaboration is a fantastic way to learn and grow as a developer!
## Conclusion
So you want to be a full-stack developer? That's awesome! It's a challenging path, but super rewarding if you're up for it. Just like any adventure, it takes dedication, perseverance, and a genuine love for learning.
Here's the trick: equip yourself with the basics first, like a strong foundation in coding. Then, pick the right tools for the job, kind of like choosing your gear for a hike. To truly level up, get your hands dirty with real projects. It's like learning to ride a bike - you gotta practice! The tech world moves fast, so staying on top of new trends is key.
Don't forget, that communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are your secret weapons - essential for any developer. The most important thing? Never stop learning! Embrace the journey, and keep getting better every day. There will be obstacles, but each one will make you a stronger developer. Stay curious, stay motivated, and keep pushing yourself to be the best. The world of full-stack development is waiting for you, and with the right approach, you can totally crush it!

2024.05.21 12:44 DM-Shaugnar Pro DM Looking for players to lead trough A dungeon of Secrets, The scarlet Citadel. Saturdays 9pm EST. Beginner and LGBTQ+ friendly game. 18+ Paid Game $18

Once a fortress where wizards honed their eldritch craft, the Scarlet Citadel now holds a sinister reputationā€”and for a good reason. The dungeonā€™s well-trod stairs have seen few return from their journeys below. Now, malevolent creatures spin shadowy webs, enchant foul magics, and summon forth dark gods. But for those brave enough, ancient treasures and secrets still lie scattered everywhere.

2024.05.21 12:42 Critical_Signature89 28 M keeps calling me 25 F a bad communicator, what can I do here?

Am I in the wrong ?
If I call him through the day or anytime really and he happens to be at work or doing the most stupid mundane things at home he sounds like the most boring uninterested, non-present person, to which I make some excuse and end the call. Itā€™s super pissing off I want someone who talks and texts me more
But when he calls me Iā€™m supposed to be present and interactive etc? I donā€™t like it
Today we had a fight, we hadnā€™t spent time in a while and finally got the chance to but that got cut short due to me leaving for some short work, To which he said why donā€™t you come back so I agreed I finished my work fast and called him, he then said that he wanted to sleep and can we hang in the evening? I said sure. I actually look forward to it but half of the things he says are in the air, which is very annoying. Iā€™ve told him before in the past not to do it, but he doesnā€™t understand. I text him at 4 and he says heā€™s just come out to meet his friends so I told him to call me after and Iā€™ll come see him. He said sure. At 8, I call him since he hadnā€™t called yet, and I asked him what his plan was? He said he was gonna chill with his friends for longer and if itā€™s not too late heā€™ll call me when heā€™s free and I could come see him otherwise we could hang the next day. (that also being said very lightly in the air probably) This really pisses me off, he does this very very often To him itā€™s probably nothing as he does this with all his friends - makes plans in the air all the time
I got really angry, but I donā€™t want to over react for stupid things so Iā€™ll say something like actually no letā€™s just hang tomorrow only , he can probably sense Iā€™m angry and then I wonā€™t pick his call for some time He calls this super immature behaviour and says Iā€™m horrible at communication, says if I want to hang with him why canā€™t I be direct and upfront and say no I want to hang out right now leave your friends and come see me
Iā€™m scared of being needy so I donā€™t ever say things like that and he calls that as me being a terrible communicator and how itā€™s annoying that I get angry so easily
He claims heā€™s so in love with me and Iā€™m his dream girl but wtf is this behaviour constantly Even when Iā€™m at his house he barely talks and has interactive conversation with me I feel like Iā€™m hanging out with a wall

2024.05.21 12:36 rhk_ch Boomer on an elevator rages against people who take elevators

I was in the elevator yesterday at my doctorā€™s office. It was one of those big medical buildings with everything from orthopedic urgent care to cancer treatment, and gynecology. There are 5 floors.
Boomer got on, listening to some kind of angry news Podcast on his phone speaker. By the second floor, he had figured out how to turn off the sound. A few people got off on the second floor. The moment the door closed, he started going off on people who come to the doctor and then take the elevator one floor. Like, it was their fault they were sick because they were lazy and never took the stairs. He started staring at all of us, asking us to agree with him and pile on about how disgusting and lazy these people were.
I was off my game, focusing on the procedure I had ahead of me, so I didnā€™t understand what was happening. I said, ā€œIā€™m always scared I will get trapped in a stairwell of a building I donā€™t know well. Sometimes people lock doors, or in medical buildings, you need a pass to get on some floors.ā€ He was so mad, he started turning purple. I had ruined his fun.
We all got off in the fourth floor and he was sputtering and glaring at me. I wish I had asked him why he couldnā€™t walk up four flights of stairs. Itā€™s not like we were going to the 30th floor. It was 4 flights. Not a hard walk for someone in shape. But what he wanted was to shame and judge people going to the doctor, who may be dealing with all kinds of disability issues, for not taking the stairs. By taking his comment at face value and explaining why someone might be nervous taking the stairs, I guess I was the jerk. Why does all fun have to be at othersā€™ expense?

2024.05.21 12:28 ConanBarbaryan Fairly new, not asking for anything like handouts, just someone to tag along with me an hour or 2 and get some advice pls

I'm not the best at speaking with people in online games, i just get anxious. I'm not looking for any handouts, but more somebody to show me a few things for an hour or 2. I play Fo4 and have played 3 and NV but am quite new to 76.
I started and over 2 days got to level 10. Joined some events, did one crazy one, I died and nobody revived me. I got back there and I waited for the bigger dudes to loot everything and went around grabbing what was left. Ammo, stimpacks and food i needed more. There was a gun higher then my level on a dead enemy. This dude harassed me non stop talking smack and following me round like a mad man doing emotees and jumping all around me also messaging. If he said 'Bro I was waiting for that drop please let me have it' I'd have done it without hesitation but this is the sort of stuff why I dont bother with people online.
I really want to do a few events to open a couple of fast travel spots because im at a point where im low on ammo and stims, and getting wrecked while trying to just get around to quests. Also the whole camp and season thing is a new to me, theres a few things I could use advice with if its ok.
I am on Xbox, and will hop on later on today. Anyone welcome and I have a mic

2024.05.21 12:22 Spartan1088 Venting: As a returning player- this game is a freakinā€™ mess.

Guardian- do this, do this, buy this, get teleported, talk to them, now hereā€™s 6 main quests, hereā€™s some loot, now do some inventory management, get teleported, hereā€™s 20 bounties, hereā€™s the season pass and the achievements and the achievments for achieving achievements and the account achievment ranker. Go do the season objective and the pre-DLC seasonal objective. Now our new interactive map with 20 different map icons all flashing away at you, begging for your attention.
Absolute brain overload. Scrolling through these menus feels like im in a dystopian sci-fi horror film. After an hour I had to turn the game off because my head hurt and I had very little fun.
Please, Bungie, put me on a damn map and let me shoot aliens. Your game is good but your presentation is absolute shit.

2024.05.21 12:21 tfrisinger 5 days in Paris trip report

Flying home as I write this.
First donā€™t sweat the weather in May. We had what looked like 5 days of rain but we didnā€™t get a drop of rain until the last day. Got cloudy and looked like it might rain here and there but for the most part it was very pleasant weather. Donā€™t sweat it but pack some options.
Cash/credit. Almost didnā€™t need a euro. Paid with Apple Pay everywhere - taxis, metro, sites, restaurants, etc. one exception was the artists near sacre couer only took cash. Never needed or asked for a PIN.
Sites. Did all the major sites. Each and everyone now has heavy duty security, metal detectors and even body scanners. This makes it a very slow process to get in. Plan for that.
Arc de triumph was particularly painful when we were there. Eiffel Tower is also very painful due to the queueing at the elevators. Took us 2 hours minimum to get to top and back down. Louvre did a mad dash for the Mona Lisa at 9am and that worked out well with pretty small crowds. Then got to relax and enjoy the rest of the museum.
Funny - by the Eiffel tour you can go see the Olympic countdown clock. Ironically it was showing 101 days to the games when it was only supposed to be 67. Got a picture. It even made the news. Dummies. Makes me question how prepared they are for the Olympics. Hopefully they donā€™t think they have an extra month of prep time :)
Olympics prep - didnā€™t impact us in the least. Nothing we wanted to do was blocked by it.
Safety - no issues. Felt perfectly safe late at night, on the metro, Ubers, etc. only saw one clipboard lady at the Eiffel Tower and just walked away.
Trip highlight - Le Calife dinner cruise was amazing. Iā€™ve been to Paris several times before but never did this due to seeming like a tourist trap - which I think most are. This one gets it right. Itā€™s high end food and service on a boat. It was awesome - not cheap though. We were very happy with our front of boat seats. Great way to end the trip. Was from 8pm to almost 11pm.
St. Chapelle was an amazing first for me. Pretty incredible and worth the body scan to get in.
Ubemetro - took the metro to/from sacre couer just to let my son have the experience - itā€™s very easy to buy tickets and use. Otherwise mostly walked or did Ubers which were quick and plentiful. Official taxi from Cdg to Paris was easy to find - the trip into the city however was very painful and took close to 1.5 hours with the morning traffic.
Food - too much to report. We didnā€™t have a bad meal anywhere and refreshing to have good service regardless of price.
Recommend an after dinner stroll to a gelato shop every night.
CDG - I was really sweating coming home today with some kind of strike going on which mostly impacted the trains but also some airport staff. Showed up 3+ hours early to CDG but breezed thru security and passport check in under 30mins. Give yourself time but the horror stories seem overblown.
Edit:
Language - almost everyone we came across spoke English to a good degree. We tried our best with French but usually switched to English when they heard our attempts :). I do think a merci here and there is appreciated. We did have one taxi driver with very limited English but we made it work.
Holidays - many French holidays in May. We were there for Pentecost and whit Monday - both seems to be a non event for us and nothing we came across was closed due to this. So hard to tell which holidays are impactful or not for tourists, but this wasnā€™t one of them.
