Who are we?
We are a UK based ArmA III MilSim that pride ourselves in creating compelling campaigns with the aid of real-life international hard-politics and inspiration from prior conflicts involving UK Elite Special Forces.
We have an extensive selection process that reflects the UKSF Joint Selection Process. We greatly pride ourselves on our use of extensive skills such as CQC, Air-Assault, Close Protection, HUMINT and more. We rely on heavily detailed, intel-orientated campaigns and rarely have deployments / operations with pre-determined endings.
We are capable on providing a realistic yet enjoyable operation to our members. Our Operations are every saturday at 17:30 EST/10:30 GMT.
Detachments and positions Within Our Unit

What are our Deployments like?
As a brief summary, our operations are fast-paced, well planned and well executed.
However, in more detail, our operations are greatly based on real-world situations that the UKSF detachments are involved in. The planning of our deployments usually commence upwards of 3 months before the first operation. This planning includes extensive research, "news reports" and intelligence documentation that our J-2 and SIS-MI6 staff create. Once our deployment has started, our operations are rich in detail, intel, and role-play interactions.
All of this culminates into a big picture which allows detachment commanders and staff to surgically strike to defeat or destabilise the enemy. If certain information is not accumulated or is not acted upon this could change the course and outcome of the campaign.
Our deployments can span over multiple maps to simulate multiple provinces and regions. We usually take between 6 to 8 weeks to complete our campaigns.

Big Ambitions
Hi guys, I’ve been following this game for ages and never really had the disposable to spend on it, I have found it hard to enjoy many of the games I own (played them over and over lol) and I came across this sub and thought I’d give it a shot.
What is Big Ambitions?
It is a tycoon/management sim where you make your own business and do everything from hire staff, design the layout of your stores and such. I have been watching a couple YouTubers play the game and I feel like half a pro already. It’s a deep sim with multiple factors such as market demand and supply, foot traffic, tax, rent. You can then use your profits to buy properties, design the interior buy cars, boats, yacht’s. Go on business courses to develop your own skills. And there is a road map with many decent updates coming in the near future.
Why can’t I buy it myself?
I have recently found myself having to live on my own and living on your own is not cheap, so I have not had the disposable income to spend on games of late.
I love tycoon/management games and have been dying to dig into this.
If anyone feels generous I am extremely grateful. If you can’t gift it me but this sounds like a game you would enjoy your self seriously check it out, it’s extremely good, and the developer (I think it’s a lone developer) is constantly updating and fixing bugs.

2024.05.21 23:24 PWOFalcon As Astra Volume 0, Prolog, Chapter 1, part 2

Part 1: https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/1cxj7h8/comment/l52vtd5/?context=3
*****

The Palatini of Orias journey took nine grueling days of traveling down the peaks of Torness Mountain Range. But at long last, they reached the Coralus Valley. While the temperature was far below what the half-elf usually enjoyed, it was far better than the mountain peaks.
They traveled through the valley, trying to avoid the multiple hostiles, villages, and anyone else who could tip off their enemies. They had to take every tedious path imaginable to prevent possible contact with the enemy.
Staring at their destination, Fraeya Holiadon could not decide if she should be thrilled or distorted at the sight. "Is this the place?"
"I believe so," Raegel said. "The pattern of the structures matches my drawings and the map. See the remains of the two walls?"
"And the stone rings that direct out," Henness said.
"So, you have read the legends," Raegel said, surprised by the centurion's knowledge of the temple.
"I always prepare before a mission," Henness said. "Those half rings, are they stone or artificial?"
"They look like stone, so I think they used the ground stone and molded them," Raegel said.
Fraeya Holiadon carefully stared at the temple ruins. All she could see was the destruction—fractured stone buildings, walls, weed-infested stone pavement, and so on. While there were still many stone structures, most were destroyed. She could only see death, not the walls her father could see.
She turned to ask her father what he was talking about but saw Centurion Fionntan Henness pointing toward the walls and other details.
Watching the two communicate about the features of the temple, she realized how out of depth she was. Her father spent generations studying ruins like this, while Henness is an experienced soldier. For Fraeya, this was her first mission outside the academy supervision, and she realized how different the world was compared to the classroom.
As the two spoke, her elf ears overheard Henness mention that he saw green webbing. As the two men debated what creatures could create that webbing, she already knew based on the type of webbing. Being an excellent student, she recalled the topic regarding intelligent monsters. While many species produce a web, only one creates a thick green. Goblins.
"Father," Fraeya said. "I think goblins made those webbings."
"How could you possibly know that?" Henness asked, unconvinced by the theory. "It would easily be Rorgo or a Kipt."
Fraeya reached into her backpack and pulled out her notepad. She flipped through the pages and responded, "Kipt is more silk-like, while Rorgo is more for capturing prey. Both are white. Only Goblins make green."
"She is correct," Raegel said. "The green should have been a given."
"Alright," Henness said. "That complicates things."
"How so?" Fraeya asked. "The academy said they are weak. Adventures and local militia kill them constantly, so your men should be able to wipe them out with your weaponry easily."
"Goblins are weak in small numbers, but they are a nightmare in large numbers," Henness said. "And depending on the horde, they adapt to who their enemies are quickly. For all I know, we could be fighting a nest that is as heavily armed as we are."
Fraeya looked back toward the next with much confusion. She knew about the goblin's ability to adapt. However, her teachers never stated how formal they could be. Only treating them as barbarians is a functional civilization. "I would think the academy would mention something like that."
"If you are going to be out here in the world, you must understand that life is very different from the classroom," Henness said. "The difference between someone who lives behind a desk versus someone on the ground. Now, I need to get my forces ready for our attack."
Once the centurion left, Fraeya looked at her father. "I am starting to get the impression that my schooling wasn't as truthful as I once thought."
Raegel chuckled at the statement from his daughter. "That is what I said when I left my academy in Thali'ean," he said with a short chuckle before he spoke. "Henness was correct; there is a large gap between the classroom and out here in the world."
"I see. So, now, what do we do?"
"We wait for the legionaries to form a plan. Because time is not on our side, he will want you to assist with your magic. Do you think you can assist? If you are uncomfortable, tell me now, and you can stay here where it is safe."
Feeling a nervous chill creeping down her spine, she looked back toward the temple and breathed heavily. "I admit, I am scared, but I didn't come here to babysit the camp. I want to help."
She felt her father pat her on the back, feeling a sense of pride from his touch.
"That's my daughter."
After an hour of planning, the Palatini of Orias began their assault on the temple ruins. The plan was for a primary team to assault the temple directly, triggering a response from the goblin. The second team would remain on the high ground and pick off the horde.
Fraeya ended up on the right side of the group team. To her surprise, many soldiers were thrilled that they were finally getting into a fight. She wondered, after two weeks of crawling over the mountains and hiding like rodents, they finally got a chance to be soldiers.
The primary assault group she was attached to advance toward the temple once the signal was given. Passing one of the few remaining wall structures, they entered the temple ground. As they swept through the old temple's front sections, the goblins huddled around a fire pit, noticed them, and prepared for battle.
Three legionaries known as circilmen, from the palatini positioned themselves to engage the incoming enemy. Carrying a ranged projectile weapon known as a circiletum, they hid behind the front shield men and fired upon the incoming enemy. They picked off two of the three goblins as the last one quickly crawled under a piece of rubble for cover. Then, the palatini heard a painful screech from the hiding goblin.
Fraeya couldn't help herself but stand there noticing the two fresh corpses. She then watched as two of the swordsmen rushed to the hiding goblin. They reached in and pulled the little green monster out of its hiding spot.
Two swordsmen grabbed the goblin and dragged it from its cover, it jumped on top of one of the legionaries, stabbing its blade into its armor, unable to break through. With a short struggle, the legionary could slam the goblin onto the ground. The other legionary stomped on the body before thrusting his gladius into the monster.
Hearing another screech, Fraeya looked down the stone path and saw goblins popping out of every crack and corner.
One of the legionary officers ordered the unit to reform. The swordsmen took the front with their large scutum shields, creating a two-line protective shield wall. Behind them were the circilmen, taking cover behind the scutum.
The group of goblins charged forward. As they approached, the legionaries saw the raw, starving rage within their dark green eyes—a thirst for primal instincts of food and lust and nothing else.
"Fraeya, is it?"
Hearing her name, she turned to the commanding offer of this group.
"When I give the order, shake the ground." The lower-ranking Centurian said.
Fraeya acknowledged the order as she understood what he was planning.
Turning back to the incoming horde, she watched the three circilmen open fire. The circiletums cut down the forward group of goblins. The ones behind that row suddenly stopped from the shock but were cut down by a second volley.
"Now. Before they scatter."
Fraeya placed her hands together and chanted. The two tiny mana crystals on her gloves blew green as she felt a raw energy channel through her body. A moment later, that glow expanded to the point that it encompassed her hand.
Channeling the mana needed for the spell, Fraeya placed her left hand on the ground.
The stone ground beneath them shook the stone terra, stunning the goblins. Right down the center, cracks formed, and the terra broke apart. The road slightly uplifted into an elevation, forcing the goblins to focus on what was happening.
With the ground disinformed, it prevented the enemy from scattering in an organized manner, allowing the circilmen to fire another volley.
The front scutum marched forward and started cutting down anything that moved. The other line split into two groups. They were marching down the street in an almost synchronized manner. They held their shields high toward the ruins, protecting the circilmen from any incoming projectile. Arrows and magic.
Fireballs flew and impacted the scutum infantry, protecting the flanks. Some of the shields glowed from the impact. The flames engulfed one of the men's arms, and he started to scream from the pain.
The circilmen returned fire, and a firefight began. The sound of their weapons crackled throughout the surrounding area, amplified by the ruined walls. Above the sound of battle were the voices and cries of the wounded—the circiletum that were deployed on the ridge above rained fire from the suppressive team.
The Palatini of Orias pushed deeper into the temple ground as the battle continued. That was until the town began to be consumed by this thick haze, providing cover for the goblins, and restricting visibility for the Lat forces. While not educated to the standards of civilized races, Goblins were not stupid.
"It is a haze," Fraeya said. "They must have a mage somewhere within the nest."
Centurion Fionntan Henness approached their forces and began to regroup. "Can you counter it?"
"No," Fraeya replied. "I never studied Aeromancy magic."
"Nebulo," Henness said. "Our armor and weapons will be less effective."
Fraeya understood his concern. From what she recalled from her classes; goblins have sharp senses. Based on the density of the haze, it was clear even to her that they were planning to force them to huddle and expose themselves to be surrounded, making their ranged weapons worthless.
"We will just have to work around it," Raegel said.
As Frayea prepared herself, she felt a strange feeling throughout her body, almost like some field affecting her body. She saw a female legionary in light armor and a cloak checking over the wounded. One of the few women in the legionary, she could tell she was the unit healer specializing in Sanamancy magic. The women must have placed a barrier to help protect against any poisonous gasses lying within the haze.
Orias advanced through the haze; this forced the soldiers to clump together for safety. As the assault group progressed, they were hit non-stop by the goblin's arrow fire, spears, and fire shots from sling guns. Most of these projectiles caused minor damage thanks to the heavy armor legionary’s wear. However, this did not remove the damage as it brought discomfort and limited their progression to a crawl.
Barely noticing two figures on top of a rooftop through the haze, who were firing slingshots toward their position, she pointed her hand toward a piece of rubble and, with her magic, lifted the debris and projected it through the haze. The rubble temporarily formed a gap in the haze that increased the line-of-sight.
She then called out to the fire battle mage within the unit. The mage realized what was happening and fired multiple firebolts toward the tower. Five bolts impacted the building from different directions, engulfing the structure in flames. Everyone could hear the faint sound of goblins screaming as the building burnt.
With the tower collapsing suddenly, arrows rained through the thick haze, hitting the legionaries in retaliation. While most arrows bounced off the armor, some found exposed spots. Two more legionaries fell to their knees, with one vomiting blood, forcing the healed to focus on the sick over protecting the group.
It became clear that the goblins changed their tactics and poisoned their arrows. While worthless against armor, they could still puncture the underneath clothing and scrap any exposed part of the skin.
A luperca legionnaire picked up an old broken wagon and used it as a shield to protect. With the cover, the lower ranking commanders directed the circilmen to pick off any goblins that peaked above the surface.
Combined with the haze and change of tactic, this formed a strange stalemate between the two sides. The Orias was forced into a defensive; they were well equipped to deal with any goblins who dared to get within melee range. However, the goblins had surrounded and had the range advance as they could see through the haze, allowing them to snipe any legionary who adventured far from the group.
Fraeya saw a blob of acid impact a swordsmen's scutum. The scutum started being consumed by the spell, slowly falling into pieces. The man screamed as he felt his arm burn, desperately untieing the strappings to ditch the heavy shield.
"We need to kill their shaman before we are picked off," Raegel said.
"I agreed," Henness replied. "As long as this haze is here, my suppressive team is useless."
"If I recall," Fraeya said. "A Shaman should be nearby. Someone close enough to maintain this haze and give commands but not put themselves in danger."
"Then I know where it should be," Henness said. "Let's go half-elf."
She felt her ears perk up once she realized the centurion was talking about her. She looked toward her father and saw the 'it is time to prove yourself' look. Taking a deep breath and preparing herself, she gathered behind Henness and six of his men.
The assault unit left the main one and adventurer deeper into the temple grounds. As they reached what remained of an intersection, goblins stormed out of the stone buildings to ambush the legionaries.
With their disciplined reaction, the legionaries immediately adjusted their formation and sliced down the attackers. Henness stood at the center, holding his sword out as flames wrapped around the blade.
As the goblins attacked the swordsmen, Fraeya broke apart the ground on the right flank, knocking many goblins. The one that fell, she entangled them by summoning vines - which trapped the goblins and pulled them into the ground until their death or burial.
She then turned and lifted parts of the ground on the left flank, blocking some of the goblins. This prevented the legionaries from being encircled.
"Reform," Henness ordered. "We need to advance quickly. Stay close."
Once the path was clear, the unit moved toward the building where the goblins had fortified. Henness moved in front of her to provide protection. He held up his shield, deflecting arrows.
"Stay behind me," Henness said.
While not being a military woman, Fraeya quickly learned to accept the chain of command on this quest. On the battlefield, her father told her to listen to Henness as he was a man of war. She realized that the structure and safety of the city and the academy are vastly different in the countryside. Getting behind him, she followed him close behind as he pushed forward, arrows striking his shield, allowing her to get in range for her spell.
The legionaries stopped engaging the incoming goblins, allowing their centurion and the young mage to get closer. Henness reached around his scutum and pressed the amulet attached to the outer shell's center. Once pressed, the large shield briefly glowed before darkening, returning to the standard red with white lining design.
Up ahead, Fraeya saw in full display of the nest. Spikes, fortification, and green webbing filled the gaps between the ruined structures. Skeletons and decomposing bodies littered the areas of their past victims. The goblins were standing in the bunker sections, preparing for battle. With how heavily guarded it was, she concluded that this must be where the Shaman was.
"Fraeya, now!"
Fraeya moved around the man to cast her spell. With a quick chant, her hands glowed green again. As she channeled her mana, an acid attack impacted Henness' scutum. While the added hardening enchantment from the amulet increased the scutum resistance, the acid slowly ate through the large shield.
Stepping from cover, Fraeya aimed her hands at the nest. The ground trembled a little as the front of the nest collapsed on itself from the summoned sinkhole.
With the front entrance open, Fraeya saw the Shaman in plain view—a female, being one of the few within a goblin nest. The Shama looked scared as she looked around where to hide.
Fraeya did not give it time as she cast a spell that created a spike from the ground below the Shaman and pierced straight through the vicious monster, killing it instantly.
As the Shaman staff hit the ground, the haze started to disappear.
Believing that her work was complete after killing the goblin leader, her ears quickly heard footsteps surrounding them.
Noticing that the goblins were about to swarm their position, she took cover behind Henness to protect his rear. She took a deep breath as she felt exhausted from the battle and cast so many spells quickly.
Starting at five goblins that emerged from the ruins, Fraeya watched as they charged toward them. Before they got close, however, each one was sniped from the ridge-side suppressive team.
With a moment of confusion, she stared toward the cliffside and saw the suppressive team. Now that the haze is disappearing, they could snipe off the remaining goblins from their elevation position.
"Good job, half-elf," Henness said, slowly stepping back with a shield aimed at the flames, guiding Fraeya back.
"Stop calling me half-elf," Fraeya yelled. "I am out here risking my life with the rest of you, and don't give me that war is a male-domain thing! I am willing to see this through. Most of my kind would stay home and let you fight, so why do you keep degrading me?"
"Because ideals get people killed," Fionntan Henness replied. "Out here, you must earn that respect within the brotherhood of warriors, especially if you are used to living inside the city walls. People with a self-protected mindset usually end up as food for the worms or get my soldiers killed because they do not understand what it takes to survive."
The centurion then turned to the destroyed nest. "I will say, though, what you did here. It is a good first step for a half-elf." He then turned to give her an approving smile.
Not understanding the humor from the Lat, Fraeya accepted it. From her experience, Lats always had a strange sense of humor. Insults are sometimes seen as compliments while praising could be considered offensive. Saying one thing but meaning another is a common trait for them.
With the remaining palatini coming after clearing the remaining goblins, Fraeya saw her father. She rushed over and hugged him and teared up.
"You did good, my dear," Raegel said as he patted her.
"Is this really what it is like out here?" Fraeya asked.
"Sadly, it is," Fraeya replied. "That is why I never brought you around on my digs."
"I am sorry to interrupt," Henness said. "We are on borrowed time, so can we get at it?"
Fraeya looked toward the centurion with frustration as she wanted a moment with her father. After taking a deep breath, she realized that he was right.
After finishing her hug, she brushed off the goblin's blood and clothing.
"Then we better begin searching for what we came for," Raegel said as he reached for his bag. She watched as he pulled out a perfectly smoothed, pure black orb. By itself, it didn't look impressive. She had seen hundreds of these orbs at the academy or the many workshops within the city.
Raegel held the orb in one hand and activated it with his mana. The orb glowed light blue and fainted, barely emitting any energy. He then took it against the mountain and began scanning.
Not wanting to miss anything, Fraeya quickly pulled out her journal, skipping past all her notes until she reached a blank page. She then began documenting everything her father did, taking in every world and detail.
The palatini began walking through the ruins, heading toward the mountain wall. Raegel explained in his research that the temple extended inside the mountain, like a dwarf borrian. While others who came before him came up with this theory, they were still looking for a way to detect the hidden door markings and find it.
Raegel moved down the side of the mountain, holding the orb high.
"Why are you not using a door-detecting amulet?" Fraeya asked.
"Because people have been using that for generations and found nothing here," Raegel replied.
After a reasonable amount of time when nothing had happened, Fraeya began to wonder if everything was for nothing. Seeing the lack of progress, Henness inquired if the orb failed to work. As Raegel replied, the orb suddenly blimped orange for a moment.
Witnessing the sudden change, the group backed away as they did not know how to respond to the sudden glow.
Noticing a renewed excitement from her father, she followed him closely as they investigated the mountainside.
As they searched, her father noticed that the faint blue glow from the orb had changed to orange. It then disappeared and slowly appeared, like it was slowly pulsing. When they continued walking forward, the pulsing light increased in speed.
"I think it is directing us, father," Fraeya said.
"Possible," Raegel said. "There must be some type of link."
The palatini followed the direction the orb gave. As the group approached a mountainside wall, the pulse frequency increased until it looked like the orb glowed a solid color.
"I think we found it," Raegel said. He lifted the orb toward the wall.
As the orb drew closer to the mountainside, these blue lines appeared all over the rocky wall. The rough chips of rock melted away and turned smooth as the light traveled through the grooves, slowly creating what looked like a giant door of light.
Once the bright lights finished designing a massive door, Fraeya placed her hand on the wall, shocked at how the natural bulky rocks turned into a marble-like wall.
"I would step aside, Fraeya," Raegel said.
As Fraeya stepped backward, she watched her father open the door with a magical spell. Like most magical doors, the door brightened as she expected it would fold into the mountain. To her surprise, the door didn't fold away but melted into the ground.
"What happened to the door?" Fraeya asked.
Raegal placed his hand on his chin. "It seemed that the wall was not solid but some liquid matter. These people are impressive."
The wall began to shake as dusk from the cracks spread through the area.
A large opening formed as the door walls folded into the mountainside. A passage leading deeper into the mountain. The walls were black and smooth, while the floor had these textiles in perfect order, leading deeper into the mountain.
"This has to be a dwarven design," Fraeya commented. "Only they could do something like this."
"I'm not sure," Raegel said. "This is not a design I have seen from dwarves."
Fraeya understood what her father meant. Dwarven doors into the mountains took a lot of work to find. While there were many designs of such hidden doors and the means to open them, it was doubtful that anyone had ever seen a secret magical door like this before.
Raegel started to walk into the chamber but was suddenly stopped by Henness. Stating that he wanted his men to go first to ensure no trap, three legionaries moved through the large chamber. Once they gave the clear, the rest of the group entered.
While walking, Fraeya stayed close to her father as she took notes. The soldiers ahead of them set up torches to add more light. To her surprise, the walls and floor were smooth. The air was stale, probably trapped within this chamber for centuries.
As they walked inside, the room lit up. Everyone stopped as they looked toward the end of the hall. The chamber was empty, with only a strange-looking platform at the very end. Noticing that the orb was pointing toward the platform, they approached it.
"Is this it?" Henness asked. "It does not look that impressive."
"Not everything is based on size, centurion," Raegel replied, to which his daughter giggled.
Fraeya then analyzed the platform. It was smooth, almost marble-like. However, she doubted whether it was marble. The fundamental details that she noticed were a strange-looking blue crystal at the center of the platform and another in a hole on the side.
"This is interesting," Fraeya commented. The design looked surprisingly simple. This orb must act as some command orb for this device. They must be communicating in some manner."
"Assuming that the legend was true, the orcs were the ones who summoned the lats from Altaerrie," Fraeya said. "Maybe, when this place was lost of that time, it was never turned off. Being left in a state of slumber, waiting to be reawakened."
"Possible. It would explain why the orb directed us here. The orange pulse is now pointing down at a rapid pace."
"I think it goes into that hole, father," Fraeya said. "From what I can tell, the crystal in there connects to the one on top of the platform."
"I see," Raegel said. "The pulse is pointing toward it too. I recommend that everyone step back."
"Be careful, father," Fraeya said.
Stepping back from the platform, Fraeya watched as her father placed the orb into the hole. This was the moment her father had been talking about for decades, and it had finally come true. The Bridge between two worlds had finally been discovered.
As Raegel placed the orb into the platform, it glowed orange in a solid state, no longer pulsing. The blue crystal in the middle of the platform slowly lit up, like it was waking up after a long sleep.
The air suddenly chilled as the air flowed toward the platform. A bright light beamed out of the crystal and slowly faded away, leaving a light as if on standby.
To their dismay, the orb changed to red, dimming and brightening in a slow, tired pattern.
"What is it doing, father?" Fraeya asked.
"I have no idea," Raegel replied. "It must be waiting for something."

2024.05.21 23:21 CloudStruck777 At what point does a customers expectations become unreasonable

Hey guys, So just wondering at what point does it become unreasonable for a customer to expect original fulfilment
For context
We run a jet ski rental business and have 2 locations The 2 locations are in different cities But the cities are near by
We offer custom requests but don't do them often
Anyways A customer wanted to book us for an event But wanted it to be at a hard to get to place On the ocean
We could make it happen It'd just take all my employees from both places
So he paid to book us out As we also wouldn't be able to do any of our other non rental things (Sales, repairs etc)
He booked 6 skis Which normally wouldn't be bad But the location and what all needed to happen required more people
It was also understood if the weather was bad We still would get paid as long as we showed up But we're by no means obligated to run in a thunderstorm
They booked over a month in advance And a week prior it shows thunderstorms for 3 days including the day of the event
He tells me if it storms we still get paid
Well day of it doesn't rain But the ocean didn't get the memo The swell and riding conditions are awful To the point one of my guides (retired coast guard, and boat safety educator) Said we should cancel It's not safe that day
We couldn't Anchor them anywhere safely Skis were getting flipped It was bad
Anyways we managed to make it somewhat work with half the equipment as long as my guides rode the skis themselves
But very far out And even then they were getting beat up and rolled off at times People that ride skis daily
We tried to make it work in the safest way possible considering the conditions And my guides agreed that more skis would be bad The last thing we would need is more people than the 3 out there in those kind of waves
Too much risk of new people flipping or running into each other
Anyways Coordinator complained about not having 6 skis Even though it was barely even safe to have them there at all And of course now wants a refund Even though we agreed we'd still be paid if the weather was bad But the assumption for him is it didn't rain So it wasn't bad
And he didn't get on a ski to know how bad the ocean was Or how unsafe it was
And I can agree with my guides I drove back on one of the skis from the venue to the marina And it was essentially unridable They did their best to give people a chance to still do it But even for me it was sketchy
Anyways Are we being unreasonable standing our ground not refunding (we did offer to give a free tour to some guests to keep the piece) But we feel we had to make a call to keep people safe And we feel like we held up our obligation the best we could without allowing people to get hurt
Of course they left vague threats of a lawsuit But just seems crappy as we did more than we should have had to do

2024.05.21 23:19 discgolfer1961 Anywhere but here?

I love my glasses. I love the lenses, the camera, the speakers, and the AI, sort of? I have spent more than my fair share of time experiencing the wonderful attributes of AI. From ChatGPT-4o to the new Gemini to Claude to Mistral to Copilot. All of them have their quirks and that is part of the intrigue for me, how the different models treat me differently. Meta, at least the Meta in my glasses, seems to be wanting to be anywhere but talking to a human from inside glasses? I can feel the eyerolls like students looking at a substitute teacher? I was walking my dog today as some rain rolled in and I probably should have known to look to see rain recommendations but I do have this very smart being in my glasses so I said Hey Meta, how do you do in light rain and the response was "I don't have a physical body so I don't interact with physical conditions like light rain". Okay, my bad, I worded the question poorly. I tried Hey Meta, how do the glasses you are in do in light rain? "I am a software and do not have a physical presence, so I am not "in" glasses that can be affected by light rain". Heavy sigh, I can do this...Hey Meta, I am talking to you in your ray ban glasses, are they okay if its a light rain? and the response "Your glasses aren't designed to resist submersion or extended exposure to water or other liquids". It feels like I'm trying to get an extra cup at McDonalds from a kid with a hangover? How should I do this better?

2024.05.21 22:42 thomasp3864 A sister language of Spanish I've been working on.

This yet-unnamed conlang is a sort of "con-dialect". Based on Old Spanish, it is spoken by a group recently discovered Latin American tribe of seemingly indigenous people, who were taken over by a group of conquistadors on a lost expedition; they married into the native elite and formed a new Spanish speaking upper class, out of touch with the Spanish crown, though to this day they still proclaim their loyalty to the Spanish Crown, and their leader calls himself the Bisorrei, [bisoʁej] (Refered to by the Spanish speakers as the "Bisoguey"), originally derived from the renaissance Spanish word for viceroy.

Phonological Inventory

Labial Dental/Alveölar Palatal Velar Uvular
Nasal m n ɲ
Voiceless Stop p t k
Voiced obstruënt b~β d~ð ɟ~ʝ g~ɣ ɢ~ʁ
Voiceless Fricative f θ, s (ʃ) x~χ x~χ
approximant (w) l j w
trill r
While at first glance the phonology may be basically like any real spanish dialect, the only real difference beïng the voiced uvular stop, which is simply a gutteral double r, (which exists in Portuguese), the way it came to these sounds is much different. It even has the same allophonic rules with its stops. The other allophonic rules include that the velar series becomes uvular before a back vowel. So, "coudo" (es. codo) is pronounced [qowðo], and this leads to /ʁ/ and /ɣ/ merging before back vowels, even to the point where spellings of [ɢ~ʁ] does not always reflect etymology, so [ɢoβre] 'oak' is spelled "gobre" (es. roble) despite etymologically beïng "robre".

Development of Etymological Sibilants

In Spanish, all lingual fricatives derive from medieval sibilants. In Spanish, this was a result of first losing their voicing distinction and then becoming /θ/, /s/, or /x/. In the conlang, however, they moved first, merging with the lenited forms of the stops, so medieval [dz] merged with medieval [d], and [ʒ] became [ʝ] rather then [ʃ] and then [ç]. This changes a lot more though because there is also already a [ʝ] segment, which would render the functional load of the distinction great enough to possibly prevent further mergers.
This leads to the following pairs of cognates:
Conlang Conlang Spanish Spanish Originl Original Gloss
azur aður azul aθul azur adzuɾ blue
roxo ɢoχo rojo roxo roxo roʃo red
muyer muʝer mujer muxeɾ mugier muʒeɾ woman
biejez bjeʝeð vejez bexeθ vejez βeʒed͡z age
note: Glosses represent conlang meaning, not the spanish or medieval denotation of the word

Latin /f/

Beyond this, the fate of Latin /f/ is also slightly different. In early Spanish it became /h/, and Depending on the variëty of Spanish it either is still /h/ (as in Extremadura and parts of Andalusia), was lost entirely (the typical outcome), or merged with the reflex of Old Spanish /ʃ/ and /ʒ/ (some rural varieties of Latin America.). In the conlang however, the outcome depended on the context. Before front vowels and also after [i] it became [ç]. When between [a] or [o] and [u], [o], or [a], (or simply finally after [a] or [o]) it became [χ]. Both [ç] and [χ] mostly merged with the outcome of etymological [ʃ], which as already mentioned earlier underwent a shift of [ʃ] => [ç] => [x], and then uvularises after [a] and [o]. The sole exception to this merger is [χ] before [u].
The clusters [hw] and [hj] both became [f] and [x] <- [ç] respectively.
Conlang Conlang Spanish Spanish Medieval Medieval Gloss
xiyo xiʝo hijo ixo fijo hiʒo son
fenna xenna hembra embra femna hemna woman
truhan truan truhán truan trufan truhan comedian
oz hoz foz fodz gorge
taxorra taχoʁa tahúlla taˈuʝa tahulla tahuʎa unit of roughly 1/4 acres
pherro feʁo fuego fweɣo fuego fwego fire
xerro xeʁo hierro ɟ͡ʝero fierro hjero iron

The palatal lateral

Spanish /ʎ/ also has no single clear cognate. Between non-front vowels, or initially before back vowels, /ʎ/ became [ɣ], passing through [ʟ] (this then backed to [ʁ] before /a/ and /o/). After syllables containing [j], it also dissimilated to [l]. Otherwise it became [ʝ] like in many variëties of Spanish.
Conlang Conlang Spanish Spanish Old Spanish Old Spanish Gloss
ceborra θeβoʁa cebolla θeβoʎa cebolla tseboʎa onion
ayir aʝir fallir faʝiɾ fallir haʎiɾ~faʎiɾ fail
rago ɢaʁo gallo gaʎo gallo gaʎo chicken, turkey
gubia guβja lluvia ʝuβja *lluvia *ʎuvja rain
jeno ɟeno lleno ɟ͡ʝe.no lleno ʎeno full
caudielo qawðjelo caudillo kawðiʎo cabdielo kaβdjeʎo general
The reason for words such as "gubia" and "jeno" having initial stops is the aforementioned rule whereby the voiced fricatives merged with the voiced stops.

Rhotics

Finally, we get to the outcome of [r]. Like in portuguese, this conlang has a gutteral rhotic; a simple [r] to [ʁ] shift. When combined with the broader betacism, this resulted in an initial allophone of [ɢ]. This did not affect the flap however, [ɾ], which has since turned into a trill.
Conlang Conlang Spanish Spanish Medieval Medieval Gloss
rephtar ɢeftar retar retaɾ reptar reptaɾ to delay
jego ɟeʁo yerro ɟ͡ʝero yerro jero mistake

Other Changes

Of course, these are merely the most notable changes. Other changes include voiceless plosives becoming fricatives in coda before an obstruent, and vowels raising before a coda nasal (except before a geminate nasal).
All in all, the result is a language with a very spanishy-sound (except the uvulars) but still quite distinct. This is not to get into the research I have yet to do to account for the language contact one would reasonably expect, which will be reflected in the morphology (hence why none was provided here).

2024.05.21 21:59 Environmental-Cake42 Etcetera

Good news! I have 2 different rips of Etcetera in the drive under The Twilight Singers folder of the AW/TS/Gutter Twins/Dulli drive of rarities I've been sharing with folks! The first rip had some substantial issues with pops, clicks, etc, but I was able to clean those up really well.
Unfortunately, Fair Colonus, which is really just a Shawn Smith solo, vocal only track cover of a song from the play Godspell, (and has been available on youtube for years), feeds back into electronic noise on both recordings at multiple points. The other 10 tracks, thankfully came out much better! The second rip, the person used a lot more gain and their record speed is slower. I prefer the mix without more gain, but the one with more gain is interesting too. As for the tracks themselves, here’s my take on the songs and where they come from. Give a listen when you can and let me know if you disagree on any of my notes below:
Etcetera
1 Black Love – Different recording than what plays on the credits of Monument Avenue, shorter and has an intro
2 Glass Of You – Seems to be same as Twilight (Demos) version
3 Deepest Shade - Seems to be same as Twilight (Demos) version
4 Fair Colonus –same as Shawn Smith version released years ago on myspace and findable on youtube – Both rips of this in the drive feed back.
5 Domani – same as Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair and Amber Headlights
6 Two Kinds – previously unreleased
7 Andiamo – slightly shorter version of the Powder Burns emusic bonus track. May be the same recording edited.
8 Candy Cane Crawl (Fast Version) - May be the same recording as the Rhapsody Powder Burns bonus track, but sounds a lot thinner.
9 Paper Thin Hotel – Shorter, cuts the fade
10 When Doves Cry – Seems to be the same as on Purplish Rain
11 Don’t Call – seems to be same recording as 51A - Dynamite Steps Bonus CD but trims the fade out.
Send me a message and I’ll hook you up with the drive info. when I get a chance. If Fair Colonus doesn't feed back on the vinyl itself, if I'm able to get a clean copy, I'll update the track.

2024.05.21 21:33 hahabighemiv8govroom I would love some tips for high-speed parallel routing please!

I would love some tips for high-speed parallel routing please!
TL;DR: Designing four-layer PCB where an STM32 and an ICE40 FPGA will be connected with SPI and a custom parallel 8-bit bus. I would like some tips on high-speed parallel interface routing as I want to push my parallel bus to the highest speed possible. The parallel bus will be in the 2nd layer of my board, crossing over and under some digital signals on the top and bottom layer. Solid ground plane for third layer.
Hi nerds,
I'm a hobbyist college student and I'm currently designing a four-layer PCB that will feature an STM32H743, (480MHz ARM Cortex M7 beast) and an ICE40UP5K FPGA. These two will be connected with a SPI bus and also a custom parallel 8-bit bus. The parallel bus is something I just threw into my project for funsies and also learning purposes. I want to create my own interface system that will be on par with medium speed SPI. I don't know how fast the bus will be clocked but I'm thinking around 10-20MHz. Would this be fast enough to match at least low-speed SPI?
I will use a four layer stackup as a six layer board costs way too much. I've watched Rick Hartley's video on grounding, as well as all the other excellent videos on youtube about high speed PCB design, but I haven't really seen anything about parallel buses.
I remember in Hartley's video that if you're forced to use a two-layer construction, signal traces should have ground pours between them to maintain SI. Well, My parallel bus will be on the 2nd layer and it will be crossing under some traces. Not a lot, just a handful, but still. And I can't find room for ground pours between them, at least for now. However, it will have a ground plane directly under it on the third layer. The fourth layer will be a lot of signals and ground pour.
I appreciate the advice! Please let me know if you need any more info!
EDIT: Managed to shoehorn in ground vias between every trace on the parallel bus. Here it is, it's super jank.
https://preview.redd.it/4pcmjldh5u1d1.png?width=1083&format=png&auto=webp&s=37e44142020f8680088276e545cf298bf7bd66fa
The cyan traces are my parallel bus lines on the 2nd layer, with the FPGA on the left side and STM32 on the right. The blue traces below it on the bottom layer is USB from the STM32, and the red signals on the top layer are RX/TX lines for serial, and a couple SDIO lines. Third layer is unused as it will be a solid ground pour.

2024.05.21 21:07 AMBAJESUS Continue union or go on my own?

I’m currently in the carpenters union as a second year apprentice and I’ve been doing side work for a year installing rain gutters for residential. Recently I’ve purchased a gutter machine and my income exponentially increased and I’m considering doing it full time. I’m just wondering if it’s possible to start my own company and join the union even though it’s residential? It’d only be to keep the benefits.
(I’ve already called my business agent about this and he wasn’t any help)

2024.05.21 19:38 I_WANT_YOUR_HUG Landlord stopped covering Lawn care in middle of lease. Do I have any rights here?

Hey all; I live in a house turned duplex in North Charleston.
Well, the whole time my neighbor and I have lived here, our Landlord paid someone to do our lawn which was nice. However, after all the rains last few weeks obviously the grass exploded. Neighbor called our leasing company about it and got told “Oh [Landlords name] decided we’re not doing that any more. “
No communication with us, the tenants.
Ou lease does NOT have landscaping as a tenant responsibility. Just utilities and the oven.
However, Property Maintenance and repairs DO fall under Landlord responsibilities. (But not Landscaping. Per our Lease, no parties are in charge of Landscaping).
I’ve already had to pay for other repairs on this property so I’m losing my patience a bit.
I know in SC I can legally withhold rent if a place is unlivable, but I doubt an overgrown lawn counts, and worse, the the Landlord can legally evict me afterwards and as you can imagine, not super fond of that.
Ive been googling SC tenants rights and it looks like we essentially have none.
But: Since its a duplex can we argue that the lawn is a common area? Property Owners are in charge of Common Areas. I also read Exteriors fall under “Property maintenance” but it seems like that’s gutters and windows, does Lawns count under that?
Are there any revenues we can take? Or does anyone have any great malicious compliance ideas for letting two over worked, tired twenty- somethings take over your lawn? I was thinking of planting English Ivy or something.
Thanks in advance <3

Everything Dies; Volume 1, issue 1; Summer in New York (illustration by one of my players)
Last night we played the first session of Everything Dies and, since I've been taking about it so much on here, I thought I might recap it here for my sake and for anyone whose interested.
Our Heroes
Coriolis: storm chaser whose high tech armor allows him limited control of the weather
Gamble: cat burglar armed with trick cards. Thought he was learning card tricks when he was being trained as a sorcerer
Zap-Daddy: just got average blue collar mutant trying to do what's right without revealing his identity
Bear Man Bear: he's not a man that turns into a bear, he's a bear that turns into a man.
The story;
The earth is getting hotter. Today specifically the sub burns and boils the sweaty sticking masses. It's swealterinh, it's smelly, it's miserable. It's summer in New York. Out on Coney Island a well suited man is running across the beach, arms overflowing with cash he stole off a man he lost a bet too. Throwing down a playing card, he disappears in a puff of smoke. Out on the beach, a raggedy man hauls complicated technological equipment. He knows a storm is coming, even if no one will believe him. He walks past a burly middle aged man fighting with a hot dog vendor. The man is scarfing down food but won't pay, apparently he's unfamiliar with the concept. All the while high winds threaten to tip over the Viking boat ride. There's a worker who leaves his friends to try and stabilize the ride. Before he has to change forms though, others come to assist.
The worker, Zap-Daddy, moved back to his friends after a small applause. He's at the boardwalk today with his "friend" from work, Chuck, and chuck's girlfriend. Together they talk for a bit about how the news says The Avengers, The X Men, The Fantastic 4, even Spider-Man they're all out of town. But hey, as long as the punisher's still around Chuck feels safe. Zap-Daddy ignores him when he's approached by a man in Green coveralls and rubber gloves/boots. He some kind of janitor who wants to talk to this average guy who was just so heroic. The man ask about his life, if he ever feels things are "off", what he would do if he could change one thing in the universe. The longer they talk, the more zap-daddy realizes the world around him as stopped moving. The janitor leaves as soon as ZD gets suspicious. He says it's nice to talk to somebody, that the only name he remembers is M.M., and that Zap-Daddy should try and get somewhere high up. And the world starts back up again. Meanwhile Bear Man Bear has accidently knocked out the hot dog vendor. Putting some distance between himself and the kart, he finds himself at a beach party. But quickly he realizes he's the but if the joke and yet again, this time after failing to understand Volleyball, he's hurt another person without meaning to. Under the boardwalk Gamble is hiding out when he crosses by the old(ish) man who taught him magic; an eccentric dower man named Wynn. Wynn is under the walk with a friend of his, Dimitri, and he claims to be there on work. Despite his usual demeanor, Wynn is happy to see Gamble. He's trying to see if Gamble can figure out why Wynn and Dimitri are here, but it's no use. Suspicion grows as Gamble attempts to read Dimitri's mind but finds himself unable to. Wynn takes off to see his ex wife but not before stopping to pick up a penny. A penny with, not Abraham Lincoln on the front, but John Wilkes Booth. Flabbergasted, Gamble uses his ESP to try and find nearby sources of magic. He gets crazy readings off of Wynn and Dimitri, as well as 3 people near the beach who have been singled out by something he can't determine. On the opposite end of the beach Coriolis is attempting to explain his equipment to a lifeguard when he's approached by an old rival. A butch lady named Gloria whose just in town to convince the judge that her ex, Janet, doesn't really need all this restraining order crap. She makes fun of him for these supposed "green tornados" he's been seeing, but Coriolis isn't paying attention. He's too focused on the odd readings he's getting from way out in the ocean. Crazy barometric pressure, but no abnormal air pressure in the higher atmosphere. Something is messing with things purposefully and outside the regular laws of nature.
As Zap-Daddy leaves he sees the mutant fashion designer Jumbo Carnation out on the street. He has to stop Chuck from doing something heinous. He cuts off his friendship with the man and finds somewhere private to change into his electric form. Taking to the sky, he scans the horizon trying to find whatever danger M.M. had eluded to. All he can see are crowds of people, loved ones, strangers, each of them a single aspect of a larger super organism. Soon he turns his eye to the tide, relaxing as he watches it come in and out and in and out and in and out and out and out and out and out and out. Soon he can see the very floor of the sea. Gamble watches from below the boardwalk as people flee, leaving their belongings behind. Coriolis changes into his armor and Bear Man Bear hears people screaming. There's a new word on their lips, one he hasn't heard before: tsunami.
A 120 foot wave is approaching from the ocean. There's one building on Coney Island, a luxury apartment building, that's high enough to get above the wave and there's two land masses, part of New York State, that the wave will have to pass before it gets to the shore. Gamble made his way to the parking lot where he hot wired a motorcycle to try and make it to the building. The workers on the boardwalk abandoned their posts, leaving two people at the top of the Ferris wheel and the cyclone full of riders. Zap-Daddy took it on himself to save him. Knowing he could only take two at a time, it was inevitable that the wave would hit before he got them all to safety. Bear Man Bear took two children on his back and reunited them with their mother before taking off for safety. Coriolis went out to face the wave itself. He created a wind storm to try and slow the tidal wave, saving one of the land masses and effectively cutting it down to half it's previous size. But in doing so he discovered, with infrared vision, some mammoth warm blooded creature below the water.
As people panicked, an elevated train jumped off the tracks, it's wheels still sparking electric death. BUT as the wave was smaller now, shorter buildings became more viable safe havens. Gamble was able to save scores of people by unlocking a nearby office building with one of his trick cards. It also gave Bear Man Bear a place to take the unconscious taxi driver he had saved from a car crash. Zap-Daddy had figured out how to carry four people at a time instead of two, but it would still leave two people on the cyclone he couldn't save. While all this was happening Coriolis made a call to The Avengers Tower, they sent the only two people left in the city; Captain America and The Wasp. Seconds before the wave hit the shore, Coriolis saved the last two people on the cyclone and Zap Daddy distributed the electrical circuits of the train, stopping the imminent threat. He also happened to find Chuck, pinned beneath rubble, calling for help. He knocked Chuck out before carrying him to safety, barely missing the wall of water as it obliterated the boardwalk. Bear Man Bear was still bringing an old man up the stairs as water poured in. He was able to get the old man behind an elemental wall that Coriolis had constructed, which saved the civilians. Yet the force of the wave knocked Coriolis out of the sky. With Zap-Daddy high in the sky, Coriolis falling out of it, Captain America and The Wasp arriving on the scene, and Gamble and Bear Man Bear on the roof with the majority of the people, the street of New York lay flooded.
Soon the very ground shook as a massive beast emerged from the waters. On its back stood blue men in Aztec garb, armed with extraordinary weapons. Their leader, the man who held the reigns of the beast, blew his war horn and called out "Giganto! Advance! Atlanteans! Kill any surface dweller you may find! For the glory of Namor! For the glory of The Seas! So commands Attuma!"
While captain America and The Wasp spent most of their time leaping from rooftop to rooftop, our Heroes started at the crux of the battle. Zap-Daddy and Coriolis focused their efforts on Giganto while Gamble and BMB made it their mission to protect the civilians from the Atlantean soldiers. As a great lightning storm sprung forth from Coriolis' armor, they were able to stop the monster inches before it could get to any people. Tho Gamble and Bear Man Bear were dealing with the soldiers on the roof, they were quickly overwhelmed by the soldiers firing from atop the unconscious monster. As Attuma cast Captain America into the sea, the Wasp attempted to help with the soldiers. The heavy hitters could focus their fire now on Attuma, at least until he jumped into the water and started to heal. As Coriolis was looking for him under the sea, he figured out Attuma must be cold blooded so, in a stroke of genius, he simply flooded the water. Attuma was able to break out of the ice, but it was too late. His heart rate has slowed too much. As Attuma fell unconscious, he began to change. His skin shifted from a light blue hue to a deep green, his eyes changed to a horrid yellow look, his ears grew long and pointed, and his single chin split into four. There atop the frozen waters of a New York heat wave, lay a dying skrull.

2024.05.21 18:59 vu051 Yesterwynde Merch List

This is an accompanying post to my one about Vinyl LP variants, so click there if you're interested in those. I was going to add this on the end but realised it would make the post absurdly long... Pls comment if anything's wrong or more merch pops up
There seem to be two album cover-ey base designs, "Timeless" and "Yesterwynde" - "Yesterwynde" is literally the cover, with boat and chain, and "Timeless" is a slightly different spiral with butterflies and a pocket watch. Otherwise, some merch has YW ornate letters with varying design embellishments.
These are all the shops I've found so far with merch. I've included the CDs for info but the standard and earbook 3CDs are available in many other places as well.
All of these are different designs unless specified.

2024.05.21 18:43 Beneficial_Egg_4129 Looking for a roguelite with character specific meta-progression

Hi all!
I'm looking for a fun NON-pixel graphic (my eye hurts) roguelite PC game with multiple characters and character specific meta progression.
Games that are in the ballpark of what I'm looking for:
Roboquest - my current go to rogueite. Multiple characters, fun gameplay loop and light graphic design, but no character specific meta progression (as far as I know, just started recently)
Children of morta - this would be THE game I'm looking for BUT it is pixel graphics, and the gameplay loop is a bit too same-y (just gave it a try at a friend)
Risk of Rain 2 - one of my fav roguelites. Unique characters, fun loop, although no meta progression outside the unlockable skill. And I have over 200 hours in this game so....
Deep rock galactic - not a roguelite, but fun game nonetheless. I also have over 100 hour in this game.
It doesn't need to be roguelite, but I want to have incremental AND long term progression with multiple fun characters, so when I finally have time to play for an hour or two I can feel that I progressed but also don't want to start over every day, if that makes sense.

2024.05.21 18:04 Gazooonga Wayward II

Im glad y'all liked the last chapter. I'm going to continue this story and see where it goes. As usual, if you like this then make sure to like and comment: I really value your feedback. I'm also thinking of going back and editing some things, as I thought of some cool ideas that might make the story more interesting, mainly some Meta ideas to increase the depth of this litRPG. So make sure to go back and read the last chapter in a bit: some things may be different.
First
I gripped the rough leather hilt of my new sword tightly as I walked down the newly lit hall within this strange labyrinth. The air was dank and musty, and cobwebs hung from every corner. The dented blade glowed in the firelight, as did the breastplate, and I was just starting to warm up.
I didn't like this place: it made me feel uneasy. The loneliness was also crushing, but for some reason I was used to it. The weight of all my gear was also heavy, with all the weapons and rations causing my shoulders to ache, but I pressed forward. Something inside me insisted that this was familiar, and if I could do it before then I could do it now.
At first, the hall seemed unending, but after what felt like hours I finally reached a large, open room with a humble wooden throne in the center. The edges of the vaulted ceilings held great tapestries that had faded over time, the once magnificent artistry lost forever. Candelabras, urns, and braziers all forged from bronze and inlaid with different gems and precious metals were strewn about, and there was a gigantic bronze brazier at the center of the room, just in front of the throne.
On the throne sat a withered corpse wearing a crown of twisted branches, as well as rusted armor that had fused with flesh long ago. Simple wooden coffins lined the walls, six in total, each likely containing another corpse.
Then I noticed the brazier in the middle: it had long gone cold, the coals dead and waiting to be given life again by flame. But what worried me more was the burnt remains of the skeleton in the center: it was a reptilian thing, tall and robust judging by the size of the femurs, and it gripped a sword much like mine…
Okay, I didn't like this place at all, not one bit. Whoever was here before me obviously met some horrible fate, maybe even burnt alive within the brazier, which was a fate I had no desire to experience.
Next to the throne was a chest, and anyone with common sense knew that opening the chest would probably be a bad idea. So I looked for something far more valuable: an exit. At the far end of the room we're a pair of double doors made from polished slate, and soni approached them. I ran my scaly hands across it and admiring the beautiful masonwork: engraved with elegant images of all sorts of events, such as men slaying giants, terrifying dragons burning down villages, great treasures hidden away, and a large mead hall with a boat as it's roof nestled on a hill, it was something out of legend. But that didn't matter, I just needed them to open so I could leave. They didn't budge from me pushing them, nor did they possess any handles or bars, so something else has to activate them.
I decided to see if I could get some answers out of the magic note turned journal. I pulled it out and began writing with the quill, the tip seemingly possessing an endless supply of ink. How do I open the doors?
Once again, my good hand began moving if it had a mind of its own, scribbling out a minimalist sentence that would probably be of no use to me. Open the chest.
I grumbled and wrote down another response. Will bad things happen if I open the chest?
More furious scribbling against my will. Bad things will happen either way.
Well, that was reassuring.
What will happen when I open the chest?
Bad things. I wanted to punt the book across the room. I just stuffed it back into my bag and growled again, the depth of my reptilian voice startling me. I was sure I wasn't supposed to sound like that, but I did. Maybe I was just overthinking this, and it was just a side effect of some kind of amnesia, but I really felt like I was in the wrong body.
I turned back to the throne and the chest next to it. It was a simple wooden thing with no lock, so it wouldn't be challenging to open at all. I walked towards it, sword in hand, anxiety shooting through me like electricity, and as I bent down to open it up I couldn't help but look behind me as I did so.
Then, with one simple motion, I opened it. There was more than I expected, but still not much, just a small pile of rough gold coins and a few assorted gems. I dipped my hand into the gold and pulled out a handful, the coins each easily the width of a golf ball and decently hefty too. Then I looked for a place to put them: if I was going to be put in danger for opening this damn chest, then I was going to get something out of it.
As I stuffed the gold into my pack, I heard creaking next to me, and I instinctively dropped my pack onto the ground and kicked it to the side before rolling away. The withered corpse lifted itself up from the wooden throne, a faint hissing escaping its lips as if its vocal chords no longer worked. Then it turned to me, eyes glowing red with hatred and jaw clenched. It balled its fists and deeper its hateful gaze before pointing at me and unleashing an ear-splitting hiss like that of copper pipes coming apart. I lifted up my longsword and held it in a defensive stance, backing away slowly as my ears rang. Then I felt a bony hand on my shoulder.
I spun around and swung the blade, vivisecting another corpse halfway. All the other coffins were bursting open, and the angered dead were hobbling out, some holding rusted and chipped weapons, others simply meandering towards me with the same hatred in their eyes as the first. I was surrounded.
I swung my sword and cut one’s head off, the otherwise dry and leathery flesh of its neck giving way to my old longsword. Then I sliced through the knee of another, sending it sprawling to the ground before I stomped its head into pieces. That left four, including the one on the throne. That one stood back, glaring at me and waving its hands as if conducting an orchestra, its armored robes flowing despite the lack of ventilation. It must be the one controlling the undead.
I matched forward, sword lifted again and swung at the leader of the undead. It blocked the strike with its armored bracer and swiped at me, bony hands scraping against my breastplate but also imbuing me with an overwhelming weakness to the touch, as if I hadn't slept for days. With a grunt, I kicked him back and onto the floor, but the rest of the dead seemed to fall into a frenzy, charging at me as if they were rabid ghouls. I needed to end this, and I needed to end it now.
I impaled the first undead and kicked him off alongside their ringleader, then slammed the pommel of by sword into the forehead of the next with a spiteful roar that seemed to charge the air with static, crushing the undead’s skull inward and releasing the energy trapped within as if crumbled to the floor. The third swiped at my arm, causing an intense cold to run through me and a horrible pain to erupt from the deceptively small laceration, as if maggots were chewing on my flesh. I roared again and swung diagonally, vivisecting the decrepit thing all at once.
That left the composer. It stood back up and seemed even angrier than before, as if it had actually cared for those skeletons. Then I heard a voice behind its bestial whispers, a voice that almost sounded… pained. “Hadvar, Børge, Aegilief, Gunhild, Halfdan, Ivar! Do not fall, not to this dragon’s bastard!” It seemed to exclaim, but its cries seemed to fall on deaf ears as the corpses were no more, what remained of the flesh disintegrating into nothing more than ash, leaving only dirty bones behind.
“You shouldn't have attacked me.” I said behind grit fangs, my body still recovering from the effects of their icy touch. But no matter how much I tried to justify it to myself, it always felt like a weak response: I was probably plundering some poor guy's tomb, and then proceeded to kill all his friends to boot. I was in the wrong here, but I wasn't just going to be trapped in this shit hole of a tomb forever.
Then I looked at the brazier, which was now lit and burning, the otherwise bleached white bones of the reptile thing within coated in fresh soot. They would've killed me, or I would've starved. And they were already dead, anyway: for all I knew the undead here were held together by nothing more than old memories and whatever terrible magic possessed this place. I wasn't going to die yet, I at least wanted to see the sun one last time.
“Sorry about you and your friends, but I'm not going to die here today,” I said, trying to seem apologetic, “I've only got one shot, or so I've been told.” I matched forward again, unwavering, and busted him in the head with my pommel before slicing off his arm at the joint when he tried to reach out for me again, hissing with anger. Then, as I bullied him backwards to put some length between us, I finally kicked him one last time and jammed the end of my sword into his empty eye socket, sending the blade through his rotting head and out the back. He let out one last hiss before going limp, whatever magical nonsense holding him together dissipating as his body crumpled and his bones unknitted themselves.
I dropped the sword with a grunt and sank to my knees. My head felt like it was stuffed with cotton, and my stomach was churning. The horrible sickness the undead gave me when it swiped at me seemed to be winding down, the pain in my arm dull and more distracting than painful, but the unbearable cold and discomfort was still coursing through me. I needed to get out of this wretched place. This was a tomb, right? Maybe that door led to some kind of exit to the outdoors, or at least a pathway to it.
I forced myself back up on my feet, retrieved my bag and filled it with the rest of the treasure from the chest, and strapped everything on my back once again. I would probably want to find some kind of civilization, maybe a place where this gold would hold some value, because then maybe I could use it to find some answers.
Behind me, the doors began to crumble with a glowing purple light, as if the magic that has sealed it had been broken with the death of the undead on the throne, and I could see some semblance of light. I rushed towards it, only to find myself in an even colder area than before. The air was frigid and filled with a thick, looking fog that seemed to sap the strength out of me. It felt like an early spring morning, when it would go just above freezing and the rain had come in droves overnight, leaving behind the mist. Spruces, pines and other evergreen trees towered around me, and the forest floor was coated in thick roots, mossy rocks, vines, and dead evergreen needles. A dirt path that had long been overtaken by the forest stretched away from the tomb I had emerged from, leading me away from this place.
