A couple of years ago, I bought the following 5.1.2 system:
Receiver - Yamaha rx-v6a.
Fronts: Quadral Signum 20.
Surround + Front Heights: Quadral Phase A5.
Center: Quadral Signum 10 Base.
Sub: Quadral sub 8 aktiv.
From the very beginning, I felt my setup does not sound good. I'm not exactly sure why. I'm no audiophile, and I know this is a very basic setup and I can't expect it to sound like a 10K system, but still.
I think the speaker placing is decent, but the sound is just not that good. It's getting a bit better when the volume is high, but on lower volumes it sounds pretty bad. And I need to raise the volume a lot to really hear something clear and good. For both music and movies....
I used the YPAO feature on the receiver, I tried to change every setting, crossover, EQ., levels, distance, you name it. Nothing seem to work.
I want to know if my expectations are too much for this system or maybe I'm missing something here. Somebody told me this receiver is a bad choice for these speakers, and the Denon x2800 would be much better. I have no idea why, or how it will change that much. I read a lot of compliments and great reviews on this receiver, so what am I missing?
So what do you think and what would you do? Would you upgrade the receiver, the speakers? I thought buying new fronts and move my currents fronts to Surround,
Would appreciate any thought or advice!

I would like to ask for advise on upgrading my current speaker setup, which is:
Budget for the upgrade: > 1000$
Idea 1: get a Subwoofer, e.g.: ESI aktiv 10s + an Optical DAC. However I'm not sure about the benefits of this or whether I should invest this money instead into a new system altogether.
Idea 2: get 2x Sony SSCS5 (or better) speakers + an HDMI eARC AMP
Idea 3 (dream probably at this price point): get a 5.1 Surround system, if a good one can be had under a 1000$

Summary:
I took the newly modular Goethe C1 Exam in March, and recently got my results back. While I was preparing, there wasn't much information on the new exam format online, so I figured I'd pay it forward and share my experience. Overall, I passed, but the exam is rather challenging, and felt harder than the practice materials from previous exams. I'll get into more specifics below. With the new modular exam, you need to obtain at least a 60/100 on each section to pass that section. In order to obtain the total certificate, you need to pass all four sections. However, if you pass one or more sections, and fail the rest, you only need to retake the failed sections in order to later obtain the certificate.
My Experience with German:
I started studying German in college and took a few semesters (albeit during the pandemic with little speaking), and would say I was at a rough B1.5/B2 when I left. I began to return to German heavily over the past year in order to improve, and I decided to set a goal of taking the C1 exam in order to hold myself accountable. I started reading various books in German, listening to German radio/podcasts, and doing lots of Grammar and Vocab drills. I worked my way through Grammatik Aktiv B2-C1 (linked below) in order to finish learning the grammar I hadn't reached in college (Konjunktiv I, Complex Conditional phrases, etc.). Afterwards, I started to do more test specific practice with Mit Erfolg zum Goethe Zertifikat C1, which was incredibly helpful, as well as the practice tests from prior years which were available online (but I would caution this slightly going forward, which I'll explain in more depth below).
My Score Breakdown (60 is passing threshold)
Listening: 74/100 (satisfactory)
Reading: 74/100 (satisfactory)
Writing: 91/100 (sehr gut)
Speaking: 94/100 (seht gut)
My thoughts overall:
The Listening and Reading sections of the exam felt significantly more difficult than the practices I'd used. Going into the exam, I would've put reading as one of my stronger skills, and I typically scored around 90% on the practice exams, so I was a little surprised by my score, but a pass is a pass! Listening I tended to average around 80%, so not too far off. Immediately after I left the exam, I'd actually felt certain that I'd failed the listening section, as it was so much harder than the practice sections I'd done and I was quite uncertain about many sections. I actually made tentative plans for one of the exams in the following weeks, since I felt so certain that I'd need to retake (thankfully no money had been sent by the time I got my results lol, so I'd caution against acting out of post-exam nerves).
I felt pretty comfortable with speaking and writing going into the exam since I'd done multiple practices for each, and the sections were more or less exactly what I'd expected. These sections are the hardest to self-assess beforehand in comparison to the multiple choice reading and listening, so I recommend doing multiple practice rounds of each just to be safe. I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with vocab around current controversial/global topics (Climate change, globalization, work/life balance) as they come up often across both sections. I live in an English speaking country, and don't have any German-speakers to practice with, so I did a handful of speaking sessions that the Goethe Institute offers online, but I mostly just talked to myself lol. The majority of the speaking exam is actually a monologue on a topic, so it's actually quite possible to practice by yourself thankfully. Just for the sake of transparency, I will admit that speaking comes very naturally to me, and this was the section that I admittedly practiced the least for.
While I can only speak to the single exam that I took, I would say that the modular exam feels more difficult overall, especially with regard to the Listening and Reading sections -- both in terms of the material presented, as well as the questions. The questions can be quite confusing, and often aren't answerable solely by knowing whether something was mentioned, there's an element of logic and critical thinking to them as well, so I'd definitely recommend familiarizing yourself. If I were to do my prep again, I would focus less heavily on exam specific prep (since the level of difficulty doesn't always match up) and start incorporating actual materials more heavily into my process. I only started listening to Tagesschau and reading Der Spiegel (just as examples) in the time leading up to the exam, and I would recommend starting earlier. I've already rambled on for quite a bit, so I'll stop here, but feel free to ask any questions below, and I'd be glad to offer what I can!

Wie in meinem gestrigen Post geschrieben, habe ich nun Mod-Rechte erhalten und bin schon fleißig dabei aufzuräumen. Meinem Aufruf sich bei mir zu melden, wenn Interesse besteht dabei zu helfen diesen Sub zu pflegen und verbessern, sind eine ganze Menge Leute gefolgt! Dafür erstmal ein dickes DANKE!! Ich finde es sehr geil, dass hier viele mitgestalten möchten und Lust haben in der Community aktiv zu sein. Das allein zeigt: der Sub lebt!
Ihr kennt bestimmt aber die Floskel, "zu viele Köche verderben den Brei". Ich denk bei einem Sub unserer Größe, werden erst einmal 4 aktive Mods genügen. Anschließend werden wir gucken wie groß der weitere Bedarf ist. Dafür werde ich 3 der Anfragen bestätigen, nachdem ich mir auch genau angeschaut habe, was die Leute sonst auf Reddit posten und ob dies mit den noch verfeinerten Rules set dieses Subs konform geht. Ich hätte auch gerne einen Mod der englischer Muttersprachler ist und irgendwo in Übersee wohnt, damit auch zu unseren Nachtzeiten hier Mod-Support gewährleistet werden kann.
Meine kurzfristigen Pläne sehen vor, Ordnung zu schaffen. Langfristig bin ich sehr daran interessiert, hier mehr anzubieten! Das heißt neben dem regelmäßigen Match Thread, der die aktuelle Aufstellung und ein paar News zum Match enthält, möchte ich weitere Formate etablieren. Sendet mir hierzu gerne Vorschläge! As I wrote in my post yesterday, I have now received mod rights and am already busy cleaning up. A lot of people followed my call to contact me if you were interested in helping to maintain and improve this sub! First of all, a big THANK YOU!! I think it's really cool that many people want to help shape things here and want to be active in the community. That alone shows: the sub is alive!
But you probably know the phrase, “too many cooks spoil the broth”. I think for a sub our size, 4 active mods will be enough. We will then see how great the further demand is. To do this, I will confirm 3 of the requests after taking a close look at what else people are posting on Reddit and whether this conforms to the still refined rules set of this sub. I would also like to have a mod who is a native English speaker and lives somewhere overseas so that mod support can be guaranteed here even at night.
My short-term plans are to get things in order. In the long term, I'm very interested in offering more content! That means, in addition to the regular match thread, which contains the current lineup and some news about the match, I would like to establish other formats. Feel free to send me suggestions! I will discuss more with the other future mods.
Also, if you have ideas on how we can make this sub better known and encourage activity, feel free to DM me! Let's make this sub a fan hub we can be proud of :)

On 2 channel I am getting the the combo of vintage, analog warmth with the dimensionality and slam of more modern gear. The only issue (which could be my ears) is I am not getting the sparkle that I’d like but overall music has weight, depth, warmth and impact that I don’t get with all modern stuff. On atmos/ht it is very full and coherent. The addition of the Linn power amps really brings out the best in the 140s and they go really deep and along with the sub, deliver a very immersive experience that is very bass heavy. On atmos music it’s good/interesting but I am not sold on the mixes. I would say overall that analog sources, in particular vinyl and RTR sound incredible and are approaching the transparency and depth that I have heard in the best six figure systems but still lacking the shimmer and sparkle that I remember from those. |

2024.02.25 04:13 SEKLEM Linn: A Tail of Audio Buggery
 | A while back I bought Scotland made Linn Katan bookshelf speakers on Craigslist for what amounted to “couch money” or “pocket change”. While they weren’t going to win any beauty contests they sounded natural and were easy listening to my taste. Sometime later I found another set in better condition on eBay. Since then they’ve been my go-to speakers for music listening. submitted by SEKLEM to audiophile [link] [comments] I did a lot of post purchase research on the Katans and found out about Linn’s Aktiv systems. For those that don’t know what that is, it’s Linn’s proprietary “active bi-amping” solution. Apparently it’s terribly funny in Scottish culture to spell things phonetically. This esoteric solution requires that you purchase one of their compatible amplifiers and corresponding “Aktiv” cards which you then install in the amplifier. In any forum discussion revolving around the Katan speaker eventually “Aktiv” is brought up and touted to bring transformative improvement to the speaker. It’s implied that Aktiv takes the Katan from decent to great. I was somewhat skeptical, but given how much love the sound from the Katan, I’d except even an incremental improvement as money well spent as long as I don’t have to go wild about it. I tracked down the Aktiv cards for second generation Majik amplifiers (more phonetical spellings) and the Majik 4100 amp with the improved power supply. All in good condition but even just the cards cost me as much as I’d paid for the speakers themselves, amp was 5 times as much. Oh well, only live once right? Getting the cards installed was relatively straightforward with the help of some YouTube guides. Swapping the plates on the back of the speakers is a little intimidating, because if the plates are not configured correctly it could result in disaster for the amplifier. Pulled the B&K 125.2 that was powering the Katans out of the rack and placed the lighter Linn amplifier. Expecting more depth and perhaps a more defined center image I was disappointed to have neither. The vocals actually regressed, lost in the tracks I had chosen for demo. What could have happened? Had I made a mistake in the wiring? I searched for a polarity mismatch despite knowing pretty well what that sounds like and was not what I was hearing. No, wiring was fine. Check that cards are installed correctly and are secure, yep, those are fine. What’s the lesson here? Sometimes people hear improvements in sound because they want to. The degrade in sound with this COULD be due to faulty equipment, however everything here looks fine and doesn’t exhibit any aberrant behavior. I wouldn’t say it sounds bad or wrong even, just, not as good as the straight power from the B&K amp feeding the passive crossovers of the Katans. It could also be heavily based on my personal preference. Maybe most of the Linn owners out there really enjoy that pushed back and dark sound. All in all it’s pretty disappointing that the Majik/Aktiv upgrade took the life out of the Katans despite all the so-called accounts of Aktiv bringing more life out of them. Just a reminder industry exists to make a profit and sometimes industry creates solutions to non-existent problems to milk the end user, and maybe even raw dog your behind while they’re at it. |

Would there be any reason you couldnt plug another brand that have bi-amp(able) posts on the rear of the speaker...
I understand the point of the cards (or kards) are they are tuned to the frequencies that should be best for the matching Linn speaker at the other end but would be interested to know if anyone has done this ?
Dont want to fry anything amp end or speaker end - and i cannot find anyone online in any forums that have had a go at this...
Obv contacting Linn - they will tell me to only connect Linn product.

the goal is to buy 2x Dante card for the X32rack and X32.
the lenght of the room does not allow AES50 but on stage the X32 rack as a stage box and the S16 can be connected together with AES50
The plan is two use ethernet hubs on the ceiling truss with a few Dante AVIO Analog output Adapter to 6x or 8x Aktiv speakers. 1x front st., 1x center st. and 2x delays st.
my main question, if we use the X32 rack as a stage box with the dante network to communicate with the X32, Can we still control headsamp from the main X32? if not what are the work around ?

I'm searching for a nice 5.1 replacement of my >10 years old Yamaha RX-V6 AV and ELAC sound-system. I think it was Elac Cinema 3 ESP (with SUB 111.2 ESP and 5 x 301.2 Satellites). Overall prices was around 1.8K € if I'm not mistaken.
I was never that convinced with the sound. Although the overall package was okeyish, but quite often voices in movies were not easily understood.

After searching through a lot of post and tech-blogs and seeing a bunch of reviews on youtube (I'm no techie when it comes to audio), I am in favor of following Klipsch components at the moment:

manchmal schaut mir beim zocken meine Partnerin zu oder noch seltener habe ich keinen Bock auf meine Kopfhörer und nutze dann die kränklichen Lautsprecher meines Bildschirms. Allerdings stört es mich immer mehr, wie da einzelne Töne untergehen.
Gleichzeitig bin ich aber jetzt nicht sonderlich audiophil. Im Wohnzimmer stehen zwei Teufel Ultima 40 aktiv. Die Info aber nur am Rande, dafür ihr wisst wo die Reise zwecks Qualität hingeht.
Mein Budget wären maximal 250€. Drüber will ich auf keinen Fall gehen. Zudem sollte das ganze platzsparend sein, weil mein Tisch mit Bildschirmen schon voll steht. Eine Wand vor mir, an der ich Boxen anbringen kann gibt es auch nicht .
Habe auch schon ein wenig recherchiert, vielleicht kann ja jemand was zu den folgenden System sagen und wie zufrieden e sie damit ist.

I've known for a while now that I've always wanted to study abroad, but germany wasn't really in my radar until this scholarship came to my attention only a month ago. Given that I have basically no experience with the german language. Some might say that I am at too basic of a level to start trying to have conversations, but my previous experiences with learning spanish showed me that I never really started learning until I started having conversations.
I realize that this is not a one way interaction. Being a native english speaker I can help you with everything from sounding more natural, to forming your first sentence. I'm hoping to find people with slightly similar interests, and move our conversations from lessons, to just two friends having a chat.

Hey guys. I've been trying to set up a small home theater for the first time, googled around quite a bit and came to a setup I think is okay for a start, although I'm unsure about some pieces.
As for the room itself: The wall for the projector is 240cm wide and I plan to use it entirely. It's 420cm away from the couch and due to what I found online, I would've placed the projector about 360cm away from the wall.

- Projector: BenQ TH575 or TH685i both are in my budget, but I can't really tell if the latter is worth the extra cost or if the 575 is more than enough
- Speakers (L/R): KEF Q150 I decided against a center speaker for the start due to budget and do a phantom center; but I might upgrade in a couple months
- Receiver: Denon AVR-X1700H initially I wanted to go for the S760H, but the 1700 is on sale right now for cheaper than the 760, so that's a steal
- Sub: I don't really need much bass due to thin walls in the entire apartment complex & an infant next door to the living room - so I'm just looking for a small sub and no higher than 40cm (space constraints).
- That's the only piece I'm really stumped on. I'd appreciate your recommendations here!
- EDIT: After doing some further research, I found the ESI Aktiv 10S to be a potential pick. Any thoughts?

 | So I just got 4 old speakers from my grandpa but I don’t know much about speakers and can’t get this thing to work. I figured that if anyone would know, it would be you guys. It’s stereo I think and I’m pretty sure there is an amplifier built into these things which I’ve never seen before. It also uses very old cables I’ve never seen before.
