2024.05.14 14:39 IRunIntoStuff So, how does Android Photo Picker work for permissions?

I can't seem to find much information around Photo Picker.
From what I gather, it has its own "albums" which are screenshot, download, camera, and video. It gets these from "somewhere" that don't even match what they say. For example, I have images coming up under download that are not even in my download folder and it still sees them when I move this folder. I can't reliably add images to this album either - I can't see at all how it's getting these photos.
Because of the album flaws, I'll call them flaws, you use the "big" list which you have to scroll forever to find what you want. There is no search and no quick scroll option. If you have say 10,000 images - this is not practical to use.
I'd like to think I'm using it wrong it just seems in the little information I can find and user posted information, it seems it's just lacking in features and details.
In all my searching, I can't find information of how these albums are created and information stored. How an image shows in the download album, when it's not in my gallery under download, makes no sense.
Does anyone have any information on Photo Picker and best practices? How to actually use it in a meaningful way?
I love the idea of giving apps access to certain files/folders instead of wide open access. I just can't seem to get Photo Picker to work well.
Note: apparently the addition of cloud allows you to do albums by folder in a way, but it needs to be stored in the cloud. I can't use cloud storage for this and only using local images - which is where they are all stored. It also seems backwards to have to upload images to cloud just to download them when Photo Picker uses them. This is not practical either for larger files or a large number of them.
Any tips would be great because this seems like a great feature, I just can't grasp it's proper usage and it seems lacking a lot of usability options.
This also seems like a huge plus and way to get around the slow loading gallery bug in apps (that is say you are in Instagram, you choose upload, and not all images show. Going back and forth a few times more images will load/shoe). By only selecting what you want to upload, it should load instantly and in my testing and usage this seems to be the case.
Photo picker also seems to have access to more than what you pick. For example I have 1 photo allowed for Instagram but 100 show and I can upload them. My thoughts these are cached to Instagram or in a folder Instagram has access to that Photo Picker doesn't show. Which seems weird and makes it feel broken.
Any help, insight, suggestions are welcomed.

2024.05.14 14:31 Witty-Traffic7546 I am pressing NOTA(please change my mind)

Same as the title says or i wont even bother to go . I personally dont want to waste my vote . Why i am doing that because we dont have any option.
if opposition had a proper face, BJP would have wiped out.
I feel INDIA alliance is a big no. personally i want to vote for congress, but not for INDIA alliance.
just tell me who the hell want 6-7 prime ministers. They should've choose a one face for the face of opposition that would've made a good sense .
Even gram panchayat elections or college president election wont do that type of shit , which they are doing on national level.
Its common sense, you are making alliance its good, but choose the one goddamn face to fight.

2024.05.14 14:31 himanshukhatri704 Sending Rakhi to New Zealand Keeping Traditions Alive Across Oceans from Rakhi.com

Raksha Bandhan is a festival that celebrates the bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters. For those who have siblings living in New Zealand, sending a Rakhi is a beautiful way to uphold this tradition despite the geographical distance. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to send Rakhi to New Zealand and make the celebration special, ensuring your sibling feels your love from miles away.
Why Sending Rakhi to New Zealand is Special
  1. Preserving Traditions: Sending a Rakhi helps maintain the cherished customs of Raksha Bandhan, ensuring that cultural heritage is honored even when siblings are far apart.
  2. Strengthening Bonds: A thoughtfully chosen Rakhi and a heartfelt message can bridge the physical distance, reinforcing the emotional bond between siblings.
  3. Creating Joy: Receiving a Rakhi from afar is a delightful surprise, adding an extra layer of joy and warmth to the celebration for your brother or sister.
How to Send Rakhi to New Zealand
  1. Online Rakhi Stores: Many online stores specialize in international Rakhi delivery, offering a wide variety of Rakhis and Rakhi gift hampers. Websites like Ferns N Petals, IGP, and Rakhi Bazaar provide reliable delivery services to New Zealand.
  2. E-commerce Platforms: Websites like Amazon and Flipkart offer a range of Rakhis with international shipping options. You can select the Rakhi and have it delivered directly to your sibling’s address in New Zealand.
  3. Courier Services: If you prefer to buy a Rakhi locally, you can use international courier services like DHL, FedEx, or UPS to send your Rakhi to New Zealand. Ensure you send it well in advance to account for any shipping delays.
Choosing the Perfect Rakhi for Your Sibling
Consider your sibling’s preferences and the variety of options available:
  1. Traditional Rakhis: These include Mauli Rakhis, beaded Rakhis, and Rakhis with religious symbols. They reflect cultural heritage and are perfect for siblings who appreciate classic designs.
  2. Designer Rakhis: These feature intricate designs, gemstones, pearls, and embellishments. Designer Rakhis are ideal for siblings who enjoy a touch of elegance and sophistication.
  3. Personalized Rakhis: Add a personal touch with customized Rakhis that include names, initials, or special messages. These Rakhis make the bond even more unique and memorable.
  4. Eco-friendly Rakhis: Made from natural materials like cotton, jute, or recycled paper, eco-friendly Rakhis are perfect for environmentally conscious siblings.
Enhancing the Rakhi Celebration
To make Raksha Bandhan special despite the distance, consider these tips:
  1. Rakhi with Gifts: Pair the Rakhi with a thoughtful gift. Many online stores offer Rakhi gift hampers that include sweets, chocolates, dry fruits, or personalized items.
  2. Video Call Ritual: Arrange a video call to perform the Rakhi tying ceremony virtually. This can bring a sense of togetherness and make the celebration more meaningful.
  3. Personalized Messages: Include a heartfelt letter or card with your Rakhi. Express your love, memories, and best wishes for your sibling. A personal message adds emotional value to the gift.
  4. Photographs and Memories: Send a photo album or a digital photo frame with cherished memories. This can be a wonderful way to reminisce about the good times you’ve shared.
  5. Special Treats: Order their favorite sweets or snacks from local New Zealand stores that deliver. This adds a delicious touch to the celebration.
Important Tips for Sending Rakhi to New Zealand
  1. Plan Ahead: Start planning early to ensure your Rakhi and gifts arrive on time. Account for shipping times and potential delays.
  2. Verify Address: Double-check your sibling’s address to avoid any delivery issues.
  3. Track Your Shipment: Use tracking services provided by courier companies to monitor the delivery status of your Rakhi.
  4. Customer Reviews: If using an online store, read customer reviews to ensure reliability and quality.
Sending Rakhi to New Zealand from Rakhi.com allows you to celebrate the beautiful bond of Raksha Bandhan, no matter the distance. Whether you choose a traditional Rakhi, a designer piece, or a personalized one, the essence of the festival remains the same – celebrating the love and protection between siblings. With thoughtful planning and the right choice of Rakhi, you can make this Raksha Bandhan special for your sibling, bringing joy and love across the miles. Let your Rakhi be a symbol of your enduring bond, and make this festival a memorable one for both of you.

2024.05.14 14:17 ThrowRA9876545678 How do I (F29) tell my friend (F26) to stop telling people she's a "former sex worker" because she only did one shift as a stripper five years ago and never went back?

I'm gonna be honest, it's all in the title. She did a single shift, and not even a whole one, at a truck stop strip club in like 2019. She ended her shift early and never went back. But she never stopped talking about it. She made like $40 on her little 5 hour shift and was super proud of it. She's a big sex-positive activist online and posts all the time about how she's a "retired stripper" and "former sex worker." She writes all these essays and stuff about what it's like to be a stripper.
I'm an actual retired stripper. I danced my way through college, for years, and now I have a master's degree and very little debt. In 2019, when she told me about the $40 she made, I told her that I would cry if I walked away from a shift with such little money, and she called me classist. A classist stripper. I was doing stripper-on-stripper classism, apparently. It drives me up the wall when she calls herself a "retired stripper" and does all this ideological pandering about it online.
How do I tell her to stop calling herself this? She's built this identity for herself online based around this "former sex worker" thing. She also loves to talk about how she worked retail. This is also based off the single shift she did at an Office Depot in like 2016 before quitting.

2024.05.14 14:13 fatlard_buttlick Canadian student in Germany looking for laptop advice prior to purchase

As the title says, I am looking for a new laptop. My previous laptop, a Lenovo IdeaPad l340, recently stopped charging and the costs to fix the charging port are so high that I have decided to buy a new laptop rather than pay more to fix one that is four years old.
I loved that previous laptop, and am hoping to find something relatively similar, however as a student I am working on a pretty tight budget, and hoping not to spend more than $700 USD/Euros on a new one.
Importantly, I am also kind of limited in what I can buy. I am a Canadian studying in Germany, therefore I am looking for a laptop with an English keyboard and working within a time constraint in regards to how quickly I need my new laptop delivered, making it difficult to order anything overseas.
Having spent the past few days researching, I have somewhat narrowed my choices down. Currently I am mainly considering these options from a Dutch (laptops.nl) website that sells laptops with QWERTY keyboards:
Acer Aspire 5 A515-47-R87W
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 - 82XE005DMH
HP Victus Gaming 15-fa0515nd
At this point I am leaning towards the Lenovo just because of my familiarity with the brand (though the lack of a number pad is a small issue), however I am relatively comfortable with all three options. I am looking for something that will be able to comfortably handle statistical analysis software with large datasets with relative ease, photo editing software from Affinity, as well as some limited video editing capabilities. Battery life is not such a huge concern, and although I will use the laptop to watch movies and TV, these capabilities are not so important to me.
If you have any thoughts/opinions on these products, or alternative recommendations, your input would be greatly appreciated, and help put my purchase anxiety at ease.
TLDR;
Canadian Student in Germany looking for a new laptop on a limited budget. Choices have been narrowed down, however looking for input from more knowledgeable individuals at laptops before final purchase.

2024.05.14 14:02 Kati_h20 21 and unemployed, no degree, feeling the pressure

As the title says, I’m 21(f) with what feels like no leads to a promising future. I previously have worked at a deli for 2 years but I chose to leave for something better. I’ve been searching for a job now for 6 months. In my time being unemployed I got in great physical shape, I really enjoyed rock climbing and hiking and having great nutrition. It’s been nice having this free time even if it was unintentional. But as kids my age are starting to graduate college I’m finding myself feeling inferior. I chose not to go to college because it felt like a waste of money. I have no idea what I want to do so how could I possibly choose a degree that locks me into a career path. I have great artistic talent and many skills for drawing, sculpting, painting, weaving, sewing, and more! But I’ve Been depressed since I was 15 and have been going to therapy for 5 years and I still find it difficult to do these hobbies and work on these skills that I’m good at. I feel that I have so much potential! But I’m so exhausted from this mental battle that it leaves me feeling hopeless. I want so badly to find my niche career wise, but I live in a small rural town that’s nearly devoid of opportunity. Im so grateful for all that I have, and I’m young with a long rode ahead. However, I just can’t kick this feeling of not knowing what to do, this inferiority complex, and overall just not wanting to disappoint my parents. So if you have suggestions of possible career paths that’d suit me or possible advice I’d love to hear it.

2024.05.14 13:53 Worldly_Builder_6199 Question about image licences

I'm developing an app that requires storing detailed information about books, including titles, descriptions, genres, and authors. I also need to download book cover images and author photos from Google, host them on Cloudinary, and display them in HTML. I also wanted to add some premium features, which would be paid ones.
From where can i get free images? I am not sure that big sites like Amazon and Wikipedia have no licences for their images. Did anyone use book covers in their app? I saw that Google Books API does not allow users of their API to apply any fees in their app, so i cannot use that. Any help is welcome!

2024.05.14 13:42 universemates Idols' anecdotes that sound like they come from a coming-of-age movie?

Coming-of-age is my favorite movie genre and one of my favorite thing about Kpop is how they similarly capture the ideas of youth, personal identity, found family, first love, etc. whether it's through their music or their personal stories. What are your favorite idols' anecdotes that sound like they could be a scene from a movie? Some of my recent favorites are:
It was summer [after high school graduation]. I always ran on the playground near my house every night, counting the stars of the night sky [...] I had good grades and was accepted into a good college. Continuing my studies seemed like a sensible choice. But while I was running and watching the night sky, I pondered that should do what I really like. On the last night of the two weeks period, on the way home after running, I called my mom and said "I will learn music again"
ZB1's Sung Hanbin's on his pivot from majoring in Practical Dance to Kpop in college:
I majored in street dance. Since I was in high school, I was thinking about directing my job as a dancer. At a very important moment for college entrance, I've already passed a lot of other universities on Practical Dance Major [...] When my younger sister was selected for the national climbing team, the moment she hit the summit, something inside me hits hard. "I should also do what I want to do (idol)"
I just find the images of Zhang Hao running in the summer night when he decided to pursue his dream and of Hanbin having his epiphany when his sister reached the top of the climbing wall so romantic & cinematic. As someone who is still trying to figure out what they want to do in life, stories like these also comfort me that it's okay to take risk and it's never to late to start over, which are major themes of coming-of-age dramas.

2024.05.14 13:39 austinhippie Am I the only one that lost all photos of themselves from the bulk of their 20s?

Like most (if not all) of us my life was on MySpace and later Facebook. I never really thought about it then, but I was creating the photo albums my parents kept stored away in their closets.
Eventually I needed a more professional email than the one I created Hotmail and had mostly moved on from MySpace at that point. Years later I would realize Facebook was an awful place and delete my account.
I've completely lost access to my MySpace account/profile (yes they're still out there if you haven't looked). And more frustratingly over the years of hard drive swaps, and thumb drives, and iPhoto, and Google Drive, I've lost my Facebook data dump.
When people share photos of the good old days I have hard stop that isn't older than about 10 years.
I'll never be able to show my kids my Mohawk and lip ring, they'll just have to take my word for it.

2024.05.14 13:29 Nostalgia_town [BOATS] Tale of a train journey

It was a winter morning, and I was standing on the railway station of Adityapur, one of Asia’s largest industrial hubs in the outskirts of Jamshedpur, formally known as TATANAGAR, the city known for TATAs & their steel. I updated my current whereabouts to my mother just before boarding the Tata-Gua passenger train, sounding her on my expected time to reach home. I was visiting home after 2 months, the longest interval in the 3.5 years at NIT Jamshedpur due to my business around hosting the first alumni meet of NIT Jamshedpur and a 15-day train travel across India through Jagriti Yatra. I was just carrying my laptop bag as it was a usual 2/3-day trip and I just had my Compaq laptop, a change of clothes & charger to be precise beside my small blue denim wallet & a Samsung smart phone. In 2012, smart phones were just stepping in and my brother-in law was generous enough to lend it to me to take pictures of the places I visit & the events I attend during Jagriti Yatra. Jagriti Yatra is a train ride across India with 600 yatris from different countries, different walks of life who embark on this journey to learn about various social & business enterprise. In that day’s train journey, I was travelling with a batchmate who would get down 2 stations before mine. We’d travel together many times during the four years, and we’d always take the morning train instead of the evening one. It was a passenger train which was always very crowded, and it passed through many small stations in that belt which were dimly lit, these stations were primarily existing to connect industries to the mining towns of Noamundi, Barbil, Jhinkpani and had goods trains plying with iron ore, limestone, cement, so evening trains seemed unsafe for girls travelling alone. Jhinkpani was a small town in that belt with a cement factory, ACC Cements, and a residential township for it. My dad had booked the station trip which was a Maruti Van to ply the resident of the colony from station to the colony which was around 3 kms away & there was no public transport available in this route. I was waiting to board the train all excited to show my parents the pictures of the Yatra clicked on the borrowed smart phone, I’d also met my sister and niece at Visakhapatnam while we visited Akshaya Patra mega kitchen and I remember getting clicked a cute photo of me holding my niece at the station but my excitement was short lived as soon as I kept the phone in the small zipper pocket of my laptop bag. I was modestly dressed in a kurta and leggings, without pockets of-course, pockets are a recent phenomenon in women’s Indian clothing. So, my phone and wallet were always kept in the bag.
As I boarded the train along with around 20 other people from that gate, I felt a sudden force pulling me back, but I managed to steer my way inside but with an eerie feeling, I quickly reached out to check the tiny pocket immediately only to find that both the wallet & the borrowed phone were gone. A shiver ran up my spine and I started to feel numb. There was Rs 200 in cash in that wallet which was a month of pocket money, my SBI ATM card and college i-card. Now, having zero cash, no phone I went about near the gate to see if I can find it, I spoke to couple of people but barely anyone knew Hindi, and it struck me real hard that reaching home was my single motto now. Although scared that I would be scolded by parents for being reckless, I had a sinking feeling as to how would I break this news to my sister & my brother-in-law whose smart phone I’d lost, what would I do about all the lost contacts that I’d woven so meticulously while organizing the alumni meet, what of the memories that I’d captured during the Yatra. My brain started to fizzle with all these entrapping thoughts when my friend shook me to bring me back to the dreaded train which was my reality then and I started planning my next course of action. I first called my mother from my friend’s phone to tell her about the loss, she comforted me and then she informed my dad to arrange a vehicle from the station, the trip was booked but it’d sometimes leave passengers if there are more people than capacity or not turn up due to technical glitch in the age old van that was used. My friend got down at Chaibasa and my heart started racing more as people around me in the train knew my situation and vulnerability and I tried to pose a strong and confident front. The train took more than 20 minutes to travel 17 kms but for me it seemed like ages, the sight of Jhinkpani station never made me so relieved. I quickly deboarded the train, holding on to my bag tightly this time and found a friend waiting there in his Maruti 800. He happened to have met my dad while coming to the station for a personal work and my dad asked him to pick me as well. I finally reached home travelling without a phone and a penny in pocket, my mom was so glad to see me safe and sound. I was taken aback a little to see her overtly calm demeanor at the face of such an adversary and having no concern whatsoever for my lost phone or the wallet. She prayed and thanked God for my safe return and narrated about her dream which she saw about me the previous night. She was very disturbed by it, and she’d been praying from dawn that day for my well-being as the dream was a very bad omen for me. She felt relieved that it was only few items that were lost, and I was completely unharmed. Mother’s love manifests in mysterious ways I thought while gobbling on my favorite sambar, rice that afternoon. Meanwhile, my dad deactivated my ATM card and arranged an old makeshift phone for me to be used in the remaining two months of college. When I sit back to think, I always think about my mother’s reaction and feel relieved that it happened, may be a way to appease myself of the guilt of not thinking through that somebody must have noticed me putting the phone in the small pocket and chanced upon it in the crowd while boarding. To compensate for the loss of phone, I gifted my sister with a digital camera after I started earning 4 months down from this incident. From then on, I never kept anything valuable in such obvious places in public while I maneuvered my ways in Delhi’s metro or the local trains of Mumbai, in the buses of Visakhapatnam or in the streets of Paris. I hold my wallet tight and my phone close.
