2024.04.15 16:46 SleepingMonads Pirates or General Seafaring

I'm looking for (more) gamebooks with a strong piratey or general seafaring theme.
I love nautical/maritime/seafaring literature, both fiction and non-fiction, especially pirate-themed stories and histories, and I would love to play more gamebooks (and/or simple branching-plot books) that feature these elements.
I think I'm aware of most of the big ones, which I'll list below, and hopefully this list and can help others who are also interested in these themes and unaware of what's out there. But if there's anything not on this list you think I should know of, please let me know.
Ones I've played:
Ones I haven't played yet:
Ones mentioned in this thread (alphabetical order):
Also certain sections from Joe Dever's Fire on the Water (Lone Wolf series), John Butterfield et al.'s Cretan Chronicles series, Keith Martin's Master of Chaos, by Keith Martin (Fighting Fantasy series), Robin Waterfield and Wilfred Davies' The Water Spider (Webs of Intrigue series), Douglas Niles' Lords of Doom (AD&D Adventure Gamebooks series), Edward Packard's Cave of Time and Return to the Cave of Time (Choose Your Own Adventure series), Pompeyo Reina's El Retorno del Imperio Cobra (Imperio Cobra series), Paul Mason's and Steve Williams' The Riddling Reaver (Fighting Fantasy: The Introductory Role-playing Game series), and Pat Mills' You Are Torquemada: Trapped in the Garden of Alien Delights (Diceman series)

I made a few changes and now my LO and game is crashing constantly, most noticeably when i try to enter whiterun. I can spawn in its inn and go into caverns but when i try to enter a city proper it goes down.Tried disabling new mods but it's not working (I did use new saves.) Can't figure out what the hell I did so I'm posting here. I tried my best to follow a logical load order. The ryn and lantern mod were placed at the bottom because they weren't loading in right. Been there for a few days with no problems. Same with headhunters. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

2024.04.04 14:16 TheScarletPimpernel The County Championship Preview: Division Two, Part Two

It's now April and this means only one thing: county cricket is back, bebeh.
It was a long hard winter, forced to endure six entire months of my life with no sound of leather on willow, no cries of "catch" or "NORAHN", and definitely no embarrassing international performances with bat, ball, and mouth.
The OG cricket, the thing that was formed primarily so aristocrats could gamble on something that wasn't horses, co-opting a game played by shepherds to avoid becoming monumentally bored with their jobs, begins again on the 5th of April. It promises to be a season of thrills (whenever Hameed is batting), spills (whenever Hameed is fielding), and chills (it's snowing in Plymouth ffs, Hameed).
For those new to County cricket, here is a brief explanation of how it works:
The 18 county sides are arranged into 2 divisions - ten teams in Division One, 8 in Division Two. Each side plays 14 games and at the end of the season the team in Division One with the most points wins the Championship trophy.
Points are awarded for a win (16), a tie (8), a draw (8), and for various milestones reached within the first 110 overs of each side's first innings. The bottom two sides in Division One are relegated and the top two sides in Division Two are promoted.
One batting point is awarded per 50 runs, starting at 250 and ending at 450; one bowling point is awarded for every 3 wickets taken for a maximum of 3. This means that the maximum points per match is 24, and most teams will earn at least 3 even in a loss.
To help you get up to speed, here is a handy guide for each team in both Divisions, what you can expect from them, and what the season as a whole will provide.
Division Two Division Two promises, as always, to be pure chaos. For once there is no direct stand out to head the league, as Middlesex and Yorkshire boast potentially magical but brittle line ups, and the usual suspects Glamorgan lurk waiting for a chance to finally strike. A slight downgrade in the quality of overseas players, caused by an increased Test calendar in some nations and injury crises in others, will see teams digging deep into their homegrown reserves as the season wends through the early months. Every side has a reasonable case to finish in the second promotion spot, and every side has enough flaws that a few lean months could see them headed to the wooden spoon.

After promotion was won in 2022 amidst an uncharacteristic flurry of runs, normalcy was restored on day two of 2023. The top 4 were all dismissed for ducks and only some middle order magic from Higgins and John Simpson got them close to respectability. The tone set, only an historically low 5 batting points were forthcoming as collapse followed collapse. This inability to score proved their downfall as, despite winning more games than 8th placed Kent, a division high nine losses were enough to seal their fate - although a bizarre draw with the scores level saw them just one more delivery from salvation.
Higgins produced his customary show-stopping form, with sole support from Sam Robson’s 856 @ 37.21. No one else averaged more than 25, but sheer persistence did get Mark Stoneman (612 @ 22.66) and John Simpson (564 @ 23.50) past the 500 mark. The bowling fared better, the medium pace menage of Bamber, Higgins (31 @ 27.51), and Tim Murtagh (30 @ 20.63) rolling out one last time. Tom Helm (28 @31.87) and Toby Roland-Jones (27 @ 35.29) added some expensive support; but the find of the season was Josh de Caires, who finished his transformation from struggling opening bat to off spinning demon with 27 wickets at 25.59.
Two names intrinsically linked with Middlesex departed over the winter: England wicketkeeper John Simpson left for a new role as crêche manager at Sussex; and super Tim Murtagh, scourge of the English, called it a day after 16 years at the club and a 23 year professional career. He has moved into a new role as coach at the club, though, so they haven’t lost his 950 wickets of experience yet.
Arriving at the club are Derbyshire captain and Hungary international Leus du Plooy, who parachutes in an attempt to rescue the ailing batting; and Warwickshire’s bowling all rounder Henry Brookes who will look to add some pace to the bowling ranks. Highly regarded left armer Noah Cornwell was promoted from the academy on a rookie contract. On paper this is a highly capable side - the top 4 boast nearly 40000 between them, and Bamber, Higgins, Roland-Jones is better than pretty much every other Div Two attack - but they remain a curiously brittle collective. Promotion should be assured, but should is a big word.
Most likely next England player: Ethan Bamber. A Bachelor of Theology and the son of actors, “Mini Murtagh” is capable of many roles - and calls down divine vengeance upon opposition top orders. A classic county “fast-medium if you squint”, Bamber is cracking along at just shy of 2 wickets an innings. Equally at home on a rainy May green mamba or a baked July flat top, Bamber happily chips away ball after ball all day. Another who will be waiting for the post-Key years, you might not see him in an England shirt any time soon - but when that day arrives, the smiling assassin will be waiting patiently to nick you off.
One to watch: Ryan Higgins. County cricket’s premier all rounder, Higgins is box office viewing with bat or ball. 2023 was a slow one with the ball by his standards, taking only 31 wickets, but he has formed a crucial opening partnership with Ethan Bamber. With the bat he stood nearly alone as only Sam Robson came within 300 runs. Now 29, standing at 5’ 8” and sending down niggly medium-fast when he really cranks it, Higgins won’t trouble the ECB’s selection panel - he’ll simply strike fear into the hearts of opposition players, year on year. The Higgod Abides.
Why you should support them: Maximum entertainment for minimum effort, and you get to watch Ryan Higgins
Why you should avoid them: The batting will give you a heart attack and they’re a bit of a nothing club right now
Potential first choice XI: Stoneman, Robson, Eskinazi, du Plooy, Cracknell, Higgins, White+, de Caires, Roland-Jones*, Helm, Bamber

2023 Finish Top Scorer Top Wicket Taker
10th, Division One (relegated) Rob Keogh, 780 @ 39.00 Jack White, 50 @ 25.58
Transfers in: George Scrimshaw (Derbyshire); George Bartlett (Somerset); Ravi Bopara (free agent, t20 only)
Transfers out: Tom Taylor (Worcestershire); Josh Cobb (Worcestershire); Hassan Azad/Harry Gouldstone, released; Simon Kerrigan/Gareth Berg/Ollie Sale, retired
Overseas players: Karun Nair (IND, first 7 games); Chris Tremain (AUS, April); Prithvi Shaw (IND, from June)
After comfortably avoiding relegation in 2022 Northants turned up for 2023 in high spirits, eager to do it again. Any concerns raised by a first week 8 wicket defeat by Kent were delayed after a second week win over fellow relegation candidates Middlesex - but after a mammoth innings and 270 run defeat against Hampshire made it 6 innings into the season with passing 200, alarm bells began to sound. Finishing the first phase with 3 consecutive innings defeats, they had drifted out down to rock bottom - and stayed there. A last week innings victory over Essex at least ensured the fans had some fun at the end of a long, hard campaign.
Batting proved their key weakness. Keogh and overseas star Sam Whiteman (719 @ 37.84) were the sole members of the 700 club, with Emilio Gay (589 @ 34.64) and Said Zaib (514 @ 28.44) the only other batter who passed 500 - and only Gareth Berg (131 @ 21.83) averaged more than 20, leaving the team to pick up just 10 batting points. Ben Sanderson (32 @ 24.68) was the only bowler to join Jack White with over 50 wickets as the bowlers toiled. Overseas bowler Chris Tremain was excellent inn his three game stint, his 13 wickets coming at 17 apiece.
All rounder Tom Taylor headed the departures board, choosing to stay in Division One by joining promoted Worcestershire. Josh Cobb followed him later in the winter, another victim of coach John Sadler’s fractious man management style - as was Gareth Berg, who has retired from county cricket but remains available for Italy selection. Long-serving spinner Simon Kerrigan also retired after being limited to just one appearance in his final year, while Ollie Sale called it a day after a spinal stress fracture became the latest in a long line of injuries. Hassan Azad was not retained after a below par year, while academy graduate Harry Gouldstone was also released.
After trimming down what was a bizarrely large squad, Northants brought in just two domestic players, Georges Bartlett and Scrimshaw. Bartlett joined from Somerset in search of more regular first team cricket, while newly-capped England white ball international Scrimshaw headed down the M1 from Derbyshire. Indians Karun Nair and Prithvi Shaw will operate at opposite ends of the season, with Shaw also available for white ball. Chris Tremain returns for another April only stint. Having worked to fix some of their batting issues, Northants will hope a step down to Division Two allows their squad the opportunity to rediscover some form - but an aging, inconsistent bowling attack remains intact.
Most likely next England player: Ricardo Vasconcelos. Several years have passed since Vasco was the name on pundits’ lips, coyly nodding in his direction when outside shots at England duty were mentioned. He remains a canny operator, albeit one in a bit of a rut. One of the stereotypically stylish left handed batters, the stocky Portuguese uses the crease well to unfurl his arms in a powerful off drive. Progressively diminishing returns as a opener suggest his talents might suited to the middle order role where he made his name - but still only 26, he has plenty of time to rediscover his form and press for England again.
One to watch: Alex Russell. The tall, bustling leg spinner didn’t endure the smoothest of first seasons, making just three county appearances and averaging 64.50. All 6 of his wickets came in one innings, a mammoth 38 over 6-175 as Kent scored 621. He has spent a very fruitful winter in Zimbabwe, however, finishing top of the wicket taking charts with 37 poles at an average of 30 and a strike rate of just 37. Unlikely to make much of an impact in a wet spring, mid-May onwards will see him afforded more opportunities to hone his craft and push for a starting berth in the years ahead.
Why you should support them: There are some talented youngsters here and some elegant, attacking batsmen. Plus they employ Ravi Bopara
Why you should avoid them: The coach appears to be a lunatic who forces players out of the club
Potential first choice XI: Gay, Vasconcelos, Procter*, Nair (o), Keogh, Zaib, McManus+, White, Sanderson, Russell, Tremain (o)

Transfers out: George Garton (Warwickshire); Ali Orr (Hampshire); Jamie Atkins, retired
Overseas players: Jayden Seales (WI, until June); Nathan McAndrew (AUS, June-July); Cheteshwar Pujara (IND, until 27th May); Daniel Hughes (AUS, from 31st May); Jaydev Unadakat (IND, from mid-August)
A first week victory over Durham pushed Sussex firmly into the promotion favourites category. Any potential momentum generated from this was immediately lost, as they drew the next 9 games due to a combination of rain, aHove pancake, and some ineffectual bowling. A late season surge towards promotion was halted by unsavoury scenes in a win over Leicestershire, Sussex receiving two fixed penalty notices due to ill discipline. This took them to 4 for the year, prompting an automatic 12 point deduction and a one match ban for captain Pujara. With 4 more points deducted for slow over rates Sussex finished third, 17 points behind Worcestershire.
Despite the favourable Hove conditions no individual batter cashed in, although several ended up around 800 runs - James Coles (849 @ 42.45), Tom Alsop (820 @ 39.04), and Oli Carter (779 @ 38.95) joining Fynn Hudson-Prentice. Che Pujara’s disrupted campaign produced 649 runs at 54.08 per dismissal was the pick of the batters, albeit from only 8 matches. Ari Karvelas produced a marvellous campaign with the ball, his 8 games producing 35 wickets at just under 23 apiece and taken one every 41 balls. He was joined in the 30 club by Nathan McAndrew’s 31 @ 24.19 and Jack Carson’s 31 @ 40.32. Ollie Robinson cameo’d with 20 wickets at 13.65.
George Garton departed for Warwickshire, lured by former coach Mark Robinson and the allure of playing at a Test ground. In yet another classic of the Sussex genre, a mid-winter tempestuous row erupted and Ali Orr ripped up his contract, following in Ben Brown’s path by moving westward to Hampshire. Ravi Bopara was released, later joining Northamptonshire; and youth graduate Jamie Atkins retired, after finding first team opportunities limited. Chief executive Rob Andrew left to take up a role at the ECB.
Finally deigning to bring some experience into a still incredibly callow playing squad, Sussex recruited wicketkeeper John Simpson, who will captain the club for the first 7 games. Danny Lamb also stepped through, after a strange 2023 that saw him on loan at three different clubs before departing Lancashire for good. Pujara, Unadakat and McAndrew return as overseas, while Jayden Seales arrives a year late and Daniel Hughes will appear mid-season. This is, when fully fit, undoubtedly the strongest team in Division Two. The struggle will be keeping the team fit and momentum going as overseas and international stars come and go.
Most likely next England player: Tom Haines. A purveyor of booming drives and crunching pull shots, Haines scores at quick pace and in all directions. 2023 was a bump back to earth for a career that had been soaring straight into the England side, as he crowned 2022 with a maiden ton on tour with the Lions. Unburdened with the captaincy of an extremely young team amid off field turmoil, Haines can again focus on what makes him one of the most anticipated talents on the circuit - free flowing drives and a penchant for producing daddy hundreds.
One to watch: Aristides Karvelas. The flying Greek international produced a phenomenal breakthrough year in 2023, wickets coming at a remarkable rate of 1 every 7 overs. An all format threat, he bowls slingy medium-fasts on a nagging 4th stump line before nipping it back off the seam. Repeating the trick this year amid competition for his place will be tricky but not beyond him - although it might be better if he learnt how to keep his mouth shut, or at least improve his sledging, alter an ill judged comment towards Leicestershire and Pakistan batter Umar Amin saw him miss the final two matches while the ECB investigated and cleared him.
Why you should support them: A potential bowling attack of Robinson, Archer, Seales is a crazy thing to unleash into Division Two
Why you should avoid them: They have the worst Twitter hashtag. #GOSBTS

2023 continued to go wrong off the field for Yorkshire, as the fall out from the racism scandal rumbled on. On field things mostly held on, despite a historic first week loss at home to Leicestershire and the loss of an entire game to rain in the second. It took until the 6th match for Yorkshire to earn a win - but from there they flew, going 9 games unbeaten and racking up two more wins. Arguably they deserved more, as rain curtailed two pushes for victory in extremely promising positions. A run at promotion was denied them, however, as the ECB handed out a 48 point penalty which left them languishing in 7th place.
Finlay Bean unexpectedly appeared as first choice opener but repaid this faith with an opening day century, clobbering 118(149) and finishing the year with 983 runs @ 46.80 in a formidable partnership with Adam Lyth. An injury disrupted campaign saw 8 batters average over 35 but only two more make it past 600 runs - captain Shan Masood scoring 720 at 60s and all rounder George Hill (694 @ 36.52). The bowling was not quite so dominant, as only Jordan Thompson (30 @ 30.60) joined Ben Coad in the 30 club. Matt Fisher’s disrupted year yielded 28 @ 28.53, but only one more passed 20 Dom Bess, 22 at a distinctly average 42.45.
Having cleared out the wage bill the previous winter, Yorks had a low key close season. Ben Mike was allowed to return to Leicestershire after a single, frustrating season, while young bowler Jack Shutt and white ball specialist Will Fraine were not given new deals. An unfortunate return as Chairman for Colin Graves proved the biggest story, as Yorkshire found themselves stuck between a rock, a hard place, two slimy snake oil salesmen and a tentative takeover suggestion from Rajasthan Royals.
Dan Moriarty returned permanently after a strong mid-season loan spell, and Shan Masood continued his overseas residency and retained the captaincy. Hopes of a flying early season were boosted after it was annnounced that Joe Root and Harry Brook would play at least some part in proceedings - although when and where are yet to be confirmed. This is very much Yorkshire’s season for promotion - they have the deepest quality of squad in the division, and the added boost of the country’s best two batters. A successful season might only be derailed by the continuing turmoil off field. Extremely likely champions.
Most likely next England player: Dan Moriarty. Having finally escaped from Surrey’s spin bowler’s prison, Moriarty will waste no time in re-establishing his England credentials. A tall slow left armer, he delivers the ball from well over 2 metres and with a great rip, extracting awkward turn and bounce from most surfaces. Add to this a probing consistency and it’s no surprise Yorkshire were quick to snap him up. His lack of batting ability is likely why he missed England Release Point’s tour of India - but if he gets regular game time for Yorks this season a slew of wickets and an international debut will surely arrive.
One to watch: George Hill. A schoolmate of Harry Brook’s, Hill is another graduate of the Sedbergh school conveyor belt of talent. A talented middle order bat, his slender frame belies some powerful hitting combined with immaculate timing. 2023 was a consolidation year, as he added 7 50s and another century to his 2022 breakthrough. Combine this with a handy medium pace, which to date has claimed 47 victims at an average of 27, and you get a strong all round player who can dominate matches with bat or ball. Still only 23, he will be looking to fully nail down his spot in the starting XI.
Why you should support them: It’s a very likeable squad of players, currently, and they’ll produce some entertaining games
Why you should avoid them: Ignoring the off field stuff and Colin Graves, they’re just northern Surrey. They have two players with the middle names Thornhill and Cherrington ffs
Potential first choice XI: Lyth, Bean, Masood*, Root, Brook, Tattersall+, Hill, Thompson, Fisher, Moriarty, Coad
Squad depth chart
Predicted finish: 1st
Position Team
1st Yorkshire
2nd Middlesex
3rd Sussex
4th Glamorgan
5th Gloucestershire
6th Northamptonshire
7th Leicestershire
8th Derbyshire
And that's it! Every team covered, some in less detail than I'd like, some in more detail than there was to cover - looking at you, Middlesex, you boring bastards.
If you want to read the previous three parts, you can find them here, here, and here. Otherwise, I'll see you all tomorrow for the start of the Greatest Show On Earth*
*Rain and Middlesex batting first pending

2024.03.28 17:00 chanma50 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' Review Thread

I will continue to update this post as reviews come in.
Rotten Tomatoes: Rotten
Critics Consensus: Come to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire for the sheer monster-mashing spectacle -- and stay for that too, because the movie doesn't have much else to offer.
Score Number of Reviews Average Rating
All Critics 55% 164 5.70/10
Top Critics 32% 41 5.10/10
Metacritic: 47 (47 Reviews)
Sample Reviews:
The movie can make your head hurt. But not because it’s too convoluted to follow. It’s because the real convolution is: Why are we supposed to care? About any of this? - Owen Gleiberman, Variety
At one point in the film, Godzilla, weary from all that stomping around, lies down to take a well-deserved nap in the middle of Rome’s Colosseum. It’s the most relatable moment in the film. - Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter
When Godzilla x’es Kong — whatever the hell that means — everybody wins. - William Bibbiani, TheWrap
Being in Hollow Earth takes some of the fun out of things... That also leaves Godzilla x Kong residing in a purely CGI arena without even tenuous connections to reality. It's a empty chamber for movie spectacle and nothing else. 2/4 - Jake Coyle, Associated Press
When you multiply Godzilla by Kong, what do you get? When Wingard’s doing the math, it’s an earnest, wacky, hectic ride that often feels like being thrashed about in an Imax seat. 2/4 - Katie Walsh, Tribune News Service
Wingard’s not a sentimentalist, and “Godzilla x Kong” stumbles whenever he tries to slap phony emotions onto the film to make it more like a generic crowd-pleaser. He’s a showman, a popcorn guy with excellent aesthetics. 2.5/4 - Amy Nicholson, Washington Post
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” has very little road left to cruise, and it shows. - Alissa Wilkinson, New York Times
"X” is also the symbol that should have been prodigiously used to cross out the script’s many, many stupid ideas. 2/4 - Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post
I guess, if you’re wowed by soulless CGI chaos. Thrilling? Not really. At the end, I was left feeling the way Kong does at the beginning: tired and bored. - Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal
“Godzilla x Kong” is exactly as you’d expect it to be: a popcorn movie with special effects that are better imagined than Marvel movies, rip-roarin’ action and monsters, monsters, monsters. It does its job. 2.5/4 - G. Allen Johnson, San Francisco Chronicle
Despite the addition of some new characters (human and otherwise), “Kong x Godzilla: The New Empire” comes across as a relatively uninspired and repetitive effort and a fairly forgettable chapter in the Monsterverse saga. 2/4 - Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times
“Godzilla X Kong” makes up for its own deficiencies with oddball flourishes. Wingard and the writers work like rogue chefs at an Olive Garden, tossing everything they can at any number of walls to see what sticks. 3/4 - Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
The problem with “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is the same as so many of these franchise-based films: They’re all soulless special-effects extravaganzas where CGI takes the place of character development, good writing, and emotional connection. 1.5/5 - Odie Henderson, Boston Globe
"Godzilla x Kong" is as big and loud as expected, but when the dust is settled, there's nothing to hold onto. The kaiju clash is a crushing bore. C- - Adam Graham, Detroit News
Look, with that pairing, you know what you’re going to get. And in this picture you get it. And get it. And get it. 3/4 - Soren Andersen, Seattle Times
Every single scene is explained like a high school book report. It's been said over and over again that you want to show, not tell, every chance you get. 2/5 -Meredith G. White, Arizona Republic
Returning director Adam Wingard and his writers really lean into the cartoonish style of the Showa-era Godzilla films from 1954 to ’75. This includes abandoning all pretence of logic or plausibility, never a huge concern in this franchise. 2.5/4 - Peter Howell, Toronto Star
A whole section during the climactic bout takes place in the Earth’s core, without gravity, which doubles as a metaphor for the movie as a whole. It’s weightless. - Radheyan Simonpillai, Globe and Mail
It’s a still fun yet far sloppier outing, a second round that’s less of a win for us and more of a draw. 3/5 - Benjamin Lee, Guardian
It’s giant monsters fighting, the thing constantly shrugs: what else do you want? Ideally a bit more than this. 2/5 - Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph (UK)
More than previous chapters in the MonsterVerse series, Godzilla x Kong plays out as an elaborate but empty pantomime, anxious to avoid any form of subtext that might be deemed controversial. 2/5 - Jake Wilson, Sydney Morning Herald
The kaiju of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire don’t stand for anything but themselves. They’re just giant monsters that occasionally fight one another, which would be forgivable if the fighting in the movie weren’t so torpid. - Alison Willmore, New York Magazine/Vulture
“Let them fight!”, a human bystander once said in regards to Godzilla and some skyscraper-sized enemy. In terms of future endeavors regarding these two beloved legacy characters, we beg of you, MonsterVerse curators: Just let them be. - David Fear, Rolling Stone
This doesn’t reinvent the wheel, and keeps you waiting too long for the final showdown — but when the creatures collide, it still delivers satisfying thrills. 3/5 - Amon Warmann, Empire Magazine
There is very little emotion or inspiration underneath the orgiastic violence and, especially in the wake of last year’s ingenious Japanese-produced Godzilla Minus One, The New Empire feels old hat. - Tim Grierson, Screen International
So many effects blockbusters attempt to run before they can walk (mentioning no names), and at least Wingard has the humble intent of a filmmaker who wants to make something simple, coherent and fun. 3/5 - David Jenkins, Little White Lies
“Godzilla x Kong” doesn’t multiply or divide, exactly, but in its tilt toward only those who are extremely invested in this increasingly silly franchise, it doesn’t conquer, either. - Brian Lowry, CNN.com
For fans longing to see Titans, as the Monsterverse creatures are called, go at each other – again and again and again – it's fine. For anyone else, it's just another Kong movie, with Godzilla himself a kind of sideshow. - 2/5 - Caryn James, BBC.com
The people who’ve inherited this franchise are so determined to make it “fun” that they’ve forgotten how to earn that feeling. C - David Ehrlich, indieWire
Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is a mouthful of a title. And one that’s surprisingly hard to parse out on its own, especially as it suggests more of a brand collab between those famed cinematic monsters than anything else. C - Manuel Betancourt, AV Club
About halfway through Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, I turned to a fellow critic to ask a desperate question: What the hell is this movie about? - Robert Daniels, Mashable
Godzilla x Kong absorbs its disparate influences with glee, spitting out an adventure that hums with stimulating sound design, stuns with psychedelic visuals, and coasts on Titan-level charm. - Lyvie Scott, Inverse
The last 20 minutes live up to the promise of bludgeoning viewers with plenty of rock-‘em-sock-‘em combat and demolished human landscapes, but what any of it is actually for will be forgotten even before the dust begins to settle. 1.5/4 - Derek Smith, Slant Magazine
There was real potential for this movie to be a strange action-packed odyssey. That potential was undercut, sadly, by a weak script and too many too conventional choices. - Liz Shannon Miller, Consequence
This is a monster movie for monster-movie fans and not more. But hardly 10 minutes goes by without monster action. 2/4 - Dylan Roth, Observer
For all its flaws, in fact, GxK is second only to the underappreciated Godzilla: King of the Monsters among the WarneLegendary reboot of these venerable characters. - Alonso Duralde, The Film Verdict
The underwhelming effects give you new appreciation for what Godzilla Minus One did at a fraction of the cost. 2/5 - A.A. Dowd, Digital Trends
On the level of brainless spectacle, it gets the job done. If you consider any other aspect with any degree of thought, you’re going to run into issues. 5/10 Matt Singer, ScreenCrush
The live-action and motion capture performances are mostly marvelous, despite the bum dialogue and Wingard’s tendency to rush through sequences and whole relationships that might’ve been extraordinary had they been presented with patience and elegance. 2.5/4 - Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.com
It's no easy feat to make a boring film with these two iconic movie Monsters, yet GxKTNE bounds into the arena like a drunken kaiju and falls flat on its face without making any of the impact it, and its makers, are capable of. 2/5 - Linda Marric, HeyUGuys
I admit I got a bit confused by the overwhelming number of creatures in the various locations and did not always remember who was on who’s side, but the fight scenes are as much fun as the fans could hope for. B - Nell Minow, Movie Mom
SYNOPSIS:

2024.03.26 13:55 Delay_Possible Throwback to 2014 lineups

Throwback to 2014 lineups
Arguably one of the best lineups and best festivals in the last decade. With all this recent chatter about lineups not delivering. Just wanted to throwback to a simpler time and maybe we will see some of these kinds of artists return in the future.

2024.03.26 00:08 XHeraclitusX Why is there a lack of successful English managers in football?

This topic came up today on Talksport between Graeme Souness, Simon Jordan and Jim Grey as host. An English manager has never won the Premier League. The last Englishman to win the top flight league title in England was Howard Wilkinson with Leeds in 1992. Joe Fagan was the last Englishman to win the European Cup/Champions League in 1984 with Liverpool.
Why is there such a deficit when it comes to English managers being a success? I have two reasons that I think may contribute to this;
  1. English managers don't travel abroad for experience nowhere near as much as they should. They tend to stay at home in England and not learn their trade in other countries. Sol Campbell is a great example of this. He has been on the radio in the past complaining about not being offered jobs in England. Why doesn't he go abroad then? It would do him a world of good, it certainly helped his former manager Arsene Wenger when he was starting out.
  2. English managers set their standards too high. They want to immediately get a job in the Premier League and not work their way up from the bottom. I mean, Jurgen Klopp began in 2. Bundesliga with Mainz. Max Allegri started in the Serie C2. Sir Alex started in the Scottish Second Division. Why don't Lampard, Gerrard, Rooney and the likes not want to go any lower than the Championship? Why don't they consider going abroad like I mentioned in point 1?
What do you think is the reason/s?

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. METHOD - From The Ashes (feat. Houndeye) / Watch Me [Ridmic]

Recommended if you like: Lexurus, Andromedik, Jon Void
Nowadays, there's so many different paths you can take towards recognition and success in music. One that is probably among the rarest ones out there is through YouTube Mixes - I see your confusion, allow me to give an example. Let's talk about man like METHOD.
Obviously, there's a lot more to his musical journey than I let on in the intro there. Straight outta Den Haag, Dutchman Bob Devilee, as he's known to friends, family and me because I googled it, has been building up a community of like-minded DnB enthusiasts for ages now. What you might not know, however, is that his initial plans for YouTube weren't music related at all! 13 years ago, Bob started his now 41k subscribers strong channel off under the name HDCommentary, a place for Starcraft 2 commentaries, Modern Warfare 2 (the original one!) quickscoping, Minecraft, Hearthstone and League of Legends content - truly the most early 2010s sentence I've ever written. From 2017 on, gaming gave way to music, or more specifically, DnB mixes! What didn't change, however, was his closeness to the community he was building. Every mix saw him specifically asking for feedback, with Bob responding to each and every comment, in the early days even promising a response in less than 24 hours. It even became part of his morning routine!
The next few years saw him spreading his DJing wings far and wide, participating in various mix competitions for Viper, Fiber, High and Liquici-Tea, and winning the one organised by Primal Instinct, sharing a lot of his favourite mashups on his socials and, of course, continuing to deliver his hype-inducing full hour mixes. As a big-time fan of the aforementioned Dutch Liquid, both Power- and regular, imprint Liquicity, he eventually started crafting warm-up mixes for their bigger events to spread the hype, cementing himself as an integral part of the larger community. Behind the curtain of all the big mixes with their view counts in the hundreds of thousands, in other words on his publicly available SoundCloud, you could also see how much fun he was having playing around with tunes, from random set openers featuring the right amounts of Mr. Happy to some Dubstep mashups, and if you go far back enough, even a piano-driven cover of Hakuna Matata. In 2019, his loyal SoundCloud followers could even get a glimpse of what's to come in the near future: his first original production!
The ID uploaded back then was an early version of what would eventually become You Started A Fire, one of his two debut songs on High Tea's 2020 Rooibos compilation (the other one being Hefty, or should I say Hef-tea?). Only around a year after crossing off that entry on his bucket list, the next milestone was reached: A release on Liquicity's then-new sub-label Ridmic, complete with an upload on the main channel and an inclusion on the legendary Yearmix! That was merely the beginning though. 2022 saw METHOD releasing on both the Spring and Winter AquaSettlement compilations, plus another anthem on Ridmic, of course leading to plenty more Yearmix inclusions, and, most importantly, a set on the summer festival's Nebula stage! The madness didn't even stop there though, in 2023 Liquicity officially commissioned him to put together mixes celebrating the seasonal compilations, officially uploaded on the main channel! Plus, a slot on the summer festival's Solar stage!
Now, METHOD once again returns to the place his Liquicity producer career began, Ridmic, with a Dancefloor one-two-punch so well-crafted, so anthemic and just so all-around sick I just want to hear it blasted out at all the summer festivals. Especially From The Ashes, with his fellow literally game-changing game industry colleague, DnB craftsman and simply too amazing vocalist Houndeye delivering yet another stunning and entirely too catchy vocal performance, captures that spirit of the Liquicity anthem so well I had to do a double-take on the artist name the first time I heard it. Synths so large they make any home setup feel like the main stage, melodies so sing-alongable you won't get them out of your head anytime soon and chugging basses so fat, you can't help but break out into skanking. The flipside of the project, Watch Me, takes all these qualities and flips them on their head: Hypnotic vocals, relentless 4x4 beats, bunker vibes out the wazoo! Get you a METHOD man that can do both.
Methodically crafted for both the big outdoor stages and the more intimate venues, supremely catchy, straight-up anthems.

2. Malley - Distance / Convergence 💎 [Stellar Audio]

Recommended if you like: Skylark, Misanthrop, Secula
Now for something a bit more out-there. Let's talk about up-and-comer, and this week's Hidden Gem Of The Week™️, Malley!
There's not a whole lot to be said about Oliver "Malley" O'Malley's backstory up until now, but that kind of makes the level of sound design he's pushing nowadays even crazier! Born and raised in Norwich, but now residing in York, the 21-year-old has been smashing it as part of the respective local underground scenes for quite some time now, with gigs at Norwich's Basement Session and York'z Breakz, but what really makes him stand out in my eyes is the wild evolution his own productions have made. In just a year or so, he went from the more rave-y, UK sound type tunes in 2020, to the experimental, breaky and techy sides of things in 2021, when he debuted his first proper release, Whisper, on Bad Taste. The techy aspect continued to grow more and more though, each tune sporting an even more intricate level of production than the ones that came before, and by 2023, his SoundCloud had become a real treasure trove of techy smashers (especially Reason!). In other words, a perfect candidate for my favourite Bristol-based label out there, Stellar Audio!
After the conclusion of the interplanetary SOL Series earlier this year, with us having examined the celestial bodies inhabited by Submonitor and Vici, Stellar has now engaged the Phase 3™️ hyperdrive to travel even further across the musical galaxy, with Malley being our captain for this maiden voyage. While recalibrating the Direction we're all going in, our vessel's engine experiences a bit of a stuttery bumpy start, but our captain luckily manages to work around it. As we pass all sorts of intergalactic bleeps and bloops, the sparse bassy bursts of propulsion keep us aimed towards greatness. Also, the drum action is rather tight, which is something that carries over to the next stop on our interstellar journey, Convergence. As we close in towards our destination, the sheer scale of the planetary system we aim to explore simply overwhelms us - basslines that seem to defy every single one of our known laws of physics, paired with drum action that rapidly evolves in a matter of minutes, going from minimal steppers to metallic companions to the symbiotic distortion underneath, eventually ending up as a fast-paced whirlwind of madness that's making our heads spin.
All metaphors aside, this is absolutely fantastic! Production so out of this world, so cinematic and so maximalley minimal that you can't help but be fascinated by it.
Other techy stuff from this week: - Cuepric, Melanie Ring - Aphel 💎 - IMANU, INDI - Reminiscing - The Caracal Project, Camo & Krooked - While you count down. - LYLY - Argue 💎 - LYLY - Crashing Down 💎 - Liveon - Block Universe

2024.03.09 06:58 howstuffworks3149 Erin Patterson, accused mushroom killer hires legend of Australian law

Accused mushroom murderer Erin Patterson has hired a legend of Australian criminal law as part of her legal team as she faces three murder and five attempted murder charges.
Philip Dunn KC, who has worked on some of the biggest criminal cases in Australia including the Great Bookie Robbery in the 1970s, will defend 49-year-old Ms Patterson.
Mr Dunn has represented people including late gangland boss Carl Williams and other gangland figures, and represented the wife of Melbourne society murders killer Matthew Wales, Maritza.
He is widely accepted to be one of the country’s greatest criminal lawyers, his specialities including alleged murder, conspiracy, corporate and tax fraud and drug and sex offence cases.
Melbourne lawyer Bill Doogue, who has worked for clients including former governor-general Peter Hollingworth, is Ms Patterson’s solicitor and Mr Dunn’s junior will be Sophie Stafford, a former associate to Victorian County Court judge Michael O’Connell.
The mushroom case is due to return to the Latrobe Valley Law Courts in Morwell in May, with the brief of evidence due to be finalised this month.
This will outline the evidence police have gathered after the deaths of three people after a toxic dish was allegedly served at Ms Patterson’s house in Leongatha, 135km southeast of Melbourne.
Ms Patterson’s alleged victims were her former parents-in-law Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Heather Wilkinson, 66, the aunt of her estranged husband Simon Patterson. Ms Patterson is accused of attempting to murder Simon Patterson several times and of attempting to kill Baptist minister Ian Wilkinson on the same day as the fateful meal.
Simon Patterson and Mr Wilkinson are both living in nearby Korumburra and attend the local Baptist church, and Mr Wilkinson’s health has improved steadily since he was admitted to hospital after the lunch.
His friends had feared he would die along with his wife.
Simon Patterson was not at the July 29 lunch last year, but Ms Patterson was also charged with attempting to murder him on that day.
Ms Patterson, who barely spoke when she appeared in court on November 3 last year, had previously stridently stated that she would never harm her former parents-in-law, who are buried in a single grave outside Korrumburra.
They are buried opposite Ms Wilkinson.
The engagement of Mr Dunn comes after Ms Patterson sold her city townhouse, in outer suburban Mt Waverley, for about $1m.
Expenses will depend on how the case progresses through the courts and the terms on which the lawyers are engaged. She still owns her $1m house at Leongatha.
Ms Patterson, who is the mother of two children, has not pleaded and the court process could last until well into 2025, depending on the prosecution’s case.
Police are alleging that Ms Patterson tried to kill her ex-husband three times in 10 months and again on the same day of the meal.
Ms Patterson is accused of attempting to kill her husband on four occasions between November 16, 2021, and July 29 2023, with claimed incidents also in May and September 2022.
Ms Patterson appeared in Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court for 16 minutes on November 3, wearing the same clothes as when she was arrested and taken into custody during a police search of her house.
When she reached the dock in the Morwell court in her beige knitted jumper, surrounded by two guards, Mr Doogue walked up and asked how she was going. “OK,’’ she replied.
Ms Patterson is widely believed to be in jail at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, which is a women’s prison in Melbourne’s west.
As a prisoner on remand, she is not required to work but faces almost all of the same restrictions as other prisoners.
While Ms Patterson did not grow up in a religious house, she was a regular attendee after marrying Simon Patterson in a small weatherboard church near the coalmining end of the town.

2024.03.02 23:25 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Bryan Singer

Directors at the Box Office: Bryan Singer
https://preview.redd.it/vue5ocvwxzlc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=ef2845b697f62010d3dbba52ab80b21ad349fde8

Before we start. Yeah, this post won't ignore the accusations against Singer. That's coming up at the end of the post.

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Bryan Singer's turn.
In his early teens, he started making 8mm films as well as experimenting with photography. He studied filmmaking for two years at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and later transferred to the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles where he followed the Critical studies program. He started making short films with his friends Ethan Hawke and John Ottman, and this drew the attention of someone from Tokuma Japan Productions, a Japanese company interested in funding a series of low-budget films.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

Public Access (1993)

"What's wrong in Brewster?"
His directorial debut. A clean-cut drifter ends up in a small town called Brewster. Getting wind of the local public-access television cable TV station, the man decides to host his own show called Our Town, which becomes a focal point for town citizens to call in and voice their problems anonymously.
When Singer was approached by Tokuma, he was given the chance to make a film. On a $200,000 budget, he filmed this in just 18 days. The crew used leftover film stock from Bram Stoker's Dracula and Hoffa.
The film only played in festivals, so there are no box office reports here. But it received a very good critical response, pointing to a promising career.

The Usual Suspects (1995)

"In a world where nothing is what it seems, you've got to look beyond..."
His second film. It stars Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Chazz Palminteri, Pete Postlethwaite, and Kevin Spacey. The plot follows the interrogation of Roger "Verbal" Kint, a small-time con man, who is one of only two survivors of a massacre and fire on a ship docked at the Port of Los Angeles. Through flashback and narration, Kint tells an interrogator a convoluted story of events that led him and his criminal companions to the boat, and of a mysterious crime lord — known as Keyser Söze — who controlled them.
Singer met Kevin Spacey at a party after a screening of Public Access at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize. Spacey had been encouraged by a number of people he knew who had seen it, and was so impressed that he told Singer and his screenwriting partner Christopher McQuarrie, that he wanted to be in whatever film they did next. Singer read a column in Spy magazine called "The Usual Suspects" after Claude Rains' line in Casablanca. Singer thought that it would be a good title for a film. The first idea that Singer and McQuarrie had was the image of five guys in a police line-up.
McQuarrie revamped an idea from one of his own unpublished screenplays — the story of a man who murders his own family and disappears. The writer mixed this with the idea of a team of criminals. The character of Keyser Söze was based on a real-life account named John List, who murdered his family and disappeared for two decades before being captured. The name came from one of his previous supervisors, Kayser Sume, at a Los Angeles law firm where he worked, but decided to change the last name because he thought that his former boss would object to how it was used. He found the word "söze" in his roommate's English-to-Turkish dictionary, which translates as "talk too much". All the characters' names are taken from staff members of the law firm at the time of his employment.
After 9 drafts, they started shopping the project, but studios were skeptical due to its non-linear narrative, dialogue-heavy script and lack of stars. Through foreign deals, the producers made offers to actors and assemble a cast. They were able to offer the actors only salaries that were well below their usual pay, but they agreed because of the quality of McQuarrie's script and the chance to work with one another. That money fell through, and Singer used the script and the cast to attract PolyGram to pick up the film negative.
The film had a slow roll-out, but it quickly became a word-of-mouth success, earning $67 million worldwide and successfully launching the careers of Singer and McQuarrie. Critical reception was through the roof, and its ending has ranked as one of the most iconic endings in cinema's history. It received 2 Oscar nominations and won both Best Supporting Actor for Spacey and Best Original Screenplay for McQuarrie.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $23,341,568.
  • Worldwide gross: $66,941,568.

Apt Pupil (1998)

"If you don't believe in the existence of evil, you've got a lot to learn."
His third film. Based on the novel by Stephen King, it stars Ian McKellen, Brad Renfro, Bruce Davison, Elias Koteas, David Schwimmer. Set in the 1980s in southern California, the film tells the story of high school student Todd Bowden, who discovers a fugitive Nazi war criminal, Kurt Dussander, living in his neighborhood under a pseudonym.
The film received mixed reviews, and it failed to capitalize on the Suspects' momentum; it flopped with just $8.8 million.
  • Budget: $14,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,863,193.
  • Worldwide gross: $8,863,193.

X-Men (2000)

"Trust a few, fear the rest."
His fourth film. Based on the Marvel Comics characters, it stars Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Bruce Davison, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Ray Park, and Anna Paquin. The film depicts a world where an unknown proportion of people are mutants, possessing superhuman powers that make them distrusted by normal humans. It focuses on mutants Wolverine and Rogue as they are brought into a conflict between two groups with radically different approaches to bringing about the acceptance of mutant-kind: Charles Xavier's X-Men, and the Brotherhood of Mutants, led by Magneto.
Marvel Comics writers and chief editors Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas wrote an X-Men screenplay in 1984 when Orion Pictures held an option on the film rights, but development stalled when Orion began facing financial troubles. Stan Lee and Chris Claremont started shopping the project to Carolco, and considered either James Cameron or Kathryn Bigelow as directors. Bigelow had a treatment which had Bob Hoskins as Wolverine and Angela Bassett as Storm, but Lee prioritized Cameron's intended Spider-Man adaptation. Eventually, Carolco went bankrupt and Marvel regained the rights.
20th Century Fox bought the film rights and assigned Andrew Kevin Walker to write it. This draft focused on the rivalry between Wolverine and Cyclops, and would include Magneto as the cause of the Chernobyl disaster. While Laeta Kalogridis and Michael Chabon, Fox considered many directors for the project. These included Brett Ratner, Robert Rodriguez and Paul W.S. Anderson. Singer was looking to direct a science fiction film, and Fox offered Alien: Resurrection to him. But producer Tom DeSanto thought that X-Men would be better for him. Singer was hesitant to direct a comic book film, but changed his mind after DeSanto presented the themes of prejudice in the comic that resonated with Singer. Singer and DeSanto subsequently rewrote the script, which was very well received by the Fox executives.
After the disastrous reception of Batman & Robin in 1997, the release of Blade convinced some film studios that a Marvel character "could carry on" a movie. But Fox was unhappy with the huge budget, so they demanded to cut on some characters, which included Beast, Nightcrawler, Pyro and the Danger Room. Joss Whedon was brought to write the third act, but he decided to just rewrite the whole film since he really disliked the script. This screenplay was rejected because of its "quick-witted pop culture-referencing tone", and the finished film contained only two dialogue exchanges that Whedon had contributed. Whedon also claimed to have been invited to the table read, completely unaware that his script had been thrown out.
After getting his friend Christopher McQuarrie for a rewrite, Singer decided to get his assistant, David Hayter, to rewrite it as he had an extensive knowledge of the comics. Hayter took great pride in retaining much of the core elements from the source material, such as Wolverine's Canadian background, as the studio wanted to make him American. He received solo screenplay credit from the Writers Guild of America, while Singer and DeSanto were given story credit.
As they started assembling the cast, Russell Crowe was asked to play Wolverine. He turned it down, but recommended it to his friend Hugh Jackman. Jackman was not a known actor by this point, and his wife convinced him to turn it down. Viggo Mortensen was approached, but he was unwilling to sign to multiple films. Eventually, Dougray Scott was cast as Wolverine, and he was set to start filming once his commitment to Mission: Impossible II ended. However, that film faced delays due to a late start and crew members quitting. But most importantly, Scott sustained injuries during the film for its motorcycle sequences, forcing him to quit the film. After filming started, Jackman agreed to play the character.
Highly anticipated, it opened with $57 million, which was the sixth biggest in history. It closed its run with $296 million worldwide, the ninth highest grossing of the year. It also found a huge life in home media; in its initial home video weekend, the film earned $60 million in rentals and direct sales and finished as the seventh highest-grossing home release of 2000 with $141 million. The film also received positive reviews, and is seen as a landmark in comic book films.
  • Budget: $75,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $157,299,718.
  • Worldwide gross: $296,339,528.

X2 (2003)

"The time has come for those who are different to stand united."
His fifth film. The sequel to X-Men, it stars Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Brian Cox, Alan Cumming, Bruce Davison, Shawn Ashmore, Aaron Stanford, Kelly Hu, and Anna Paquin. The plot concerns the genocidal Colonel William Stryker leading an assault on Professor Xavier's school to build his own version of Xavier's mutant-tracking computer, Cerebro, in order to destroy every mutant on Earth and to save the human race from them, forcing the X-Men to team up with the Brotherhood of Mutants to stop Stryker and save the mutant race.
Fox quickly commissioned a sequel, so Singer started considering storylines, wanting to study "the human perspective, the kind of blind rage that feeds into warmongering and terrorism", citing a need for a "human villain". David Hayter and Zak Penn were hired to write separate scripts, and combined what they felt to be the best elements of both scripts into one screenplay. Singer and Hayter worked on another script, while Penn based the film's outline on Chris Claremont's graphic novel X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills before leaving to work on another movie.
Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris were hired to rewrite Hayter and Penn's script, eventually making 100 drafts. Fox made them cut characters like Beast and Angel, feeling it was already over-crowded. However, Singer asked them to insert Lady Deathstrike into the script. There was to be more development on Cyclops and Professor X being brainwashed by Stryker. The scenes were shot, but Fox cut them out because of time length and story complications. Hayter was disappointed, feeling that James Marsden deserved more screentime. After Halle Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress in Monster's Ball, Fox instructed them to give more screentime to Storm.
The film opened with $85 million, one of the biggest openings ever. It closed with $214 million domestically and $407 million worldwide. The critical reception was even better than the original, and is often cited as a sequel that improves on its predecessor. A sequel would follow up in 2006, but Singer was working on something else.
  • Budget: $110,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $214,949,694.
  • Worldwide gross: $407,711,549.

Superman Returns (2006)

"Look up in the sky."
His sixth film. A homage sequel to Superman and Superman II, it stars Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, James Marsden, Frank Langella, Eva Marie Saint and Parker Posey. The film centers on Superman as he returns to Earth after a five-year absence, whereupon he discovers that his love interest, Lane, has moved on with her life and that his archenemy, Luthor, is plotting a scheme to kill him and reshape North America.
After Superman IV: The Quest for Peace bombed, there was no progress on a new film. Not only because the rights reverted to Ilya and Alexander Salkind, but because of Christopher Reeve's paralysis. Warner Bros. decided to make a reboot, inspired by The Death of Superman, but it didn't come to fruition. A new version, Superman Lives, began with Kevin Smith writing and Jon Peters producing. But it was a frustrating experience for Smith, as Peters had two specific requests: Superman couldn't fly and he had to fight a giant spider in the third act. Smith complied, but then Peters had more absurd requests, such as having Brainiac fighting a polar bear, wanting a space dog for merchandising purposes, and wanted Brainiac's robot assistant L-Ron was to be voiced by Dwight Ewell.
Tim Burton was hired to direct, and Nicolas Cage was cast as Superman. Both also received huge pay-or-play contracts; Burton got $5 million, while Cage got $20 million. The film would also feature Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, Christopher Walken as Brainiac and Chris Rock as Jimmy Olsen. Michael Keaton also confirmed that he would appear, but he reaffirmed he wasn't going to play Batman. But in 1998, WB decided to place it on hold for multiple reasons, having spent $30 million already.
While filming X2, Singer conceived the idea of "Superman returning to Earth after a five-year absence." He presented this to producer Lauren Shuler Donner and her husband Richard, the director of the first two Superman films. After impressing WB with his pitch, Singer got the job and he dropped out of directing X-Men: The Last Stand. Inspired by his love for the original film, he decided to make it a "homage sequel" that would ignore all films after Superman II. While Jim Caviezel advocated to play the role, Singer wanted an unknown star. Many actors auditioned, including Henry Cavill, Sam Heughan and Chris Pratt. Eventually, Brandon Routh was selected. Coincidentally, he also auditioned to play the character in Smallville.
WB had high hopes, spending a massive $223 million on the budget (plus $40 million from the cancelled Superman films). But the film never quite took off. It had a soft start at the box office, and its legs were not really great. It closed with $200 million domestically and $391 million worldwide, which made it a box office bomb considering the massive budget and expectations. While critical reception was positive, the audience reception was more negative. Routh's performance received mixed reviews, while the story and action sequences were criticized. Plans for a sequel were cancelled. Singer struck gold with X-Men, but not here.
  • Budget: $223,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $200,081,192.
  • Worldwide gross: $391,081,192.

Valkyrie (2008)

"Many saw evil. They dared to stop it."
His seventh film. It stars Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard, Terence Stamp, and Tom Wilkinson. The film is set in Nazi Germany during World War II and depicts the 20 July plot in 1944 by German army officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler and to use the Operation Valkyrie national emergency plan to take control of the country.
In 2002, Christopher McQuarrie visited Berlin while researching another project and visited the memorial to Claus von Stauffenberg at the Bendlerblock. Researching the 20 July plot, he was moved and fascinated by the fact that the conspirators were fully aware of what would happen if they failed their assassination attempt, and he wanted to make their story more well-known. He planned to direct it himself, but realized that he needed a bigger director to find funding. Singer signed, as he wanted to make a smaller film after making three major blockbusters.
While Tom Cruise is undeniably a box office star, these were rough years. His involvement with Scientology and other controversies dampened his public persona. While one could argue that these never impact films, these proved to be the opposite. Mission: Impossible III disappointed in 2006, and Lions for Lambs was his lowest grossing film in decades. So he decided to take control of United Artists for more artistic films, and Valkyrie was one of them. Pressure was high on the film, although United Artists constantly delayed the release date and downplayed Cruise's presence in the marketing.
The film drew mixed reviews, with critics concluding that the film was just a bland and uninspired thriller. But with Cruise's presence, it hit $200 million worldwide, becoming a box office success.
  • Budget: $75,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $83,077,833.
  • Worldwide gross: $201,545,517.

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)

"If you think you know the story, you don't know Jack."
His eighth film. Based on the fairy tales Jack the Giant Killer and Jack and the Beanstalk, it stars Nicholas Hoult, Eleanor Tomlinson, Stanley Tucci, Ian McShane, Bill Nighy, Eddie Marsan and Ewan McGregor. The film tells the story of Jack, a young farmhand who must rescue a princess from a race of giants after inadvertently opening a gateway to their land in the sky.
Darren Lemke conceived the idea of a new version of the classic story. D.J. Caruso was originally hired, before Singer replaced him. He brought Christopher McQuarrie to rewrite it, and his rewrite included a deeper back story for the giants and explanation of their relationship with the humans, which Singer considered a "vast improvement"; it also upped the budget. To get the budget back in line, Singer brought in television writer Dan Studney to work on the project. While Singer toned down the violence to make it appropriate for the family, it was still rated PG-13.
With a few months before release, it was delayed by nine months due to needed work on the CGI. Turns out no one was really anticipating. The film was a gigantic bomb by opening with just $27 million domestically, closing with just $65 million in the marketing. It fared much better overseas, but the $197 million worldwide total was far below the $200 million budget, making it one of the biggest bombs in history. It received unfavorable reviews, with many conflicted over the film's tone (some thought it was too dark for kids and too childish for adults), story and over-use of CGI over storytelling.
  • Budget: $200,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $65,187,603.
  • Worldwide gross: $197,687,603.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

"His past. Our future."
His ninth film. The seventh film in X-Men franchise, it stars Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Elliot Page, Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart. The story, inspired by the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline Days of Future Past by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, focuses on two time periods, with Logan traveling back in time to 1973 to change history and prevent an event that results in unspeakable destruction for both humans and mutants.
After The Last Stand, there was doubt over the continuation of the franchise with the main cast. X-Men: First Class was intended as the beginning of a new trilogy, with Matthew Vaughn returning to direct and Singer also returning as producer. After confirming the casts, Simon Kinberg started writing a script over the future of the characters. In the original script, Kitty Pryde would be the main lead, but Kinberg decided that Wolverine should be the lead due to his ageless look. However, Vaughn decided to depart the project to film Kingsman: The Secret Service, and Singer was officially hired, marking his first directorial title in the franchise since X2.
A mid-credits scene teasing the film was attached to the theatrical release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in April 2014. In the scene, which is set during the Vietnam War, Mystique tries to infiltrate a military camp led by William Stryker to recruit fellow mutants Havok, Ink, and Toad. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight Pictures to direct another film following 500 Days of Summer. After The Amazing Spider-Man, Webb's negotiations with Sony Pictures Entertainment stalled because of his commitment to Fox. Fox eventually agreed to allow Webb to direct the sequel of The Amazing Spider-Man, and in exchange, Sony promoted the X-Men film without charge.
Domestically, the film earned $233 million, which was below The Last Stand. But while the franchise was domestic-heavy, this was the first to have huge overseas power; it earned a colossal $746 million worldwide, easily becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise. The film earned critical acclaim, and has been included as one of the franchise's best films.
  • Budget: $200,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $233,921,534.
  • Worldwide gross: $746,045,700.

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

"Only the strong will survive."
His tenth film. The ninth film in X-Men franchise, it stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn, and Lucas Till. In the film, the ancient mutant En Sabah Nur / Apocalypse is inadvertently revived in 1983, and he plans to wipe out modern civilization and take over the world, leading the X-Men to try to stop him and defeat his team of mutants.
Five months before Days of Future Past opened, Singer confirmed that Apocalypse would be ready for May 2016. According to Singer, the film would focus on the origin of the mutants and feature the younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm. Singer also said that he was considering Gambit and a younger version of Nightcrawler to appear. He has referred to the film as "kind of a conclusion of six X-Men films, yet a potential rebirth of younger, newer characters" and the "true birth of the X-Men". During filming, Kinberg had to take on directing responsibilities when Singer went MIA mid-production (more on that later on).
With Singer having helmed the best installments, it was a foregone conclusion the film would live up to the standards... but it didn't. It received unfavorable reviews, with disdain towards the story, uninspired villain, and CGI. The film was still a box office success, although its $543 worldwide total was far below Days of Future Past.
  • Budget: $178,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $155,442,489.
  • Worldwide gross: $543,934,105.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

"Fearless lives forever."
His eleventh (and final) film. It stars Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello, Aidan Gillen, Tom Hollander, and Mike Myers. The film focuses on the life of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the British rock band Queen, from the formation of the band in 1970 to their 1985 Live Aid performance at the original Wembley Stadium.
Development on a Queen biopic started in 2010, with Sacha Baron Cohen set to play Mercury. The band supported Cohen's casting, but they had reservations on the film's direction, worrying that it would harm Mercury's legacy. In 2013, Cohen left the project due to creative differences. Allegedly, he had wanted a "gritty R-rated tell-all" focused on Mercury, while the band hoped for a PG-rated film about the band. The band also expressed caution over Cohen, as they felt his presence would feel distracting as he was known for Borat. Cohen himself wanted David Fincher to direct the film, and also expressed frustration with the band wanting the film to include Mercury's death halfway through.
By 2014, Dexter Fletcher was attached to direct the film and Ben Whishaw would now play Mercury, but both exited later on. Eventually, Anthony McCarten won Queen over with his script, and progress was finally underway. Singer joined later on, with Rami Malek now playing Mercury after the producers watched Mr. Robot. Malek conducted recordings at Abbey Road Studios and had consulted Roger Taylor and Brian May, both of whom would serve as producers.
Alright, now this is where it was game over for Singer.
On December 1, 2017, 20th Century Fox had temporarily halted production due to the "unexpected unavailability" of Singer. Sources said that Singer had not returned to the set after the Thanksgiving week (November 20-26). Discussions began about replacing him. Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel stepped in to direct during Singer's non-showings. Singer's absence was reportedly due to "a personal health matter concerning Bryan and his family". With under three weeks left on the shoot, Singer requested a filming hiatus as his mother was extremely ill. Other sources claimed that Malek and the crew had grown tired of Singer's behaviour, who was reportedly arriving late to set and clashing with Malek. Tom Hollander briefly quit the film over issues with Singer but was convinced to return. 3 days later, Singer was fired as director, with about two weeks of scheduled principal photography remaining.
2 days later, Dexter Fletcher (attached at one point to direct the film) was hired to direct the reminder of the film. Only 1/3 of the film was left, which he finished the following month. Although Fletcher replaced Singer with two weeks left in the production, Singer had hired the cast, crew and shot most of the film. Producer Graham King announced in June 2018 that Singer would receive the directing credit on the finished film, due to WGA's rules. Fletcher received an executive producer credit. Despite that, Singer's name was absent from the marketing campaign and the cast and crew decided to mostly exclude him from interviews.
Due to the massive popularity of Queen, the film was a hit, but even higher than anyone expected. It broke records for a biopic, and it became the highest grossing music biopic after just two weeks. It closed its run with a colossal $910 million worldwide, which was bigger than the previous highest grossing biopic (Straight Outta Compton) by a lot and becoming the sixth highest grossing film of the year. The film itself received mixed reviews from critics. While the musical sequences and Malek's performance were particularly praised, Singer's direction, the film's portrayal of Mercury and other personnel, and its use of creative licence were criticized.
During awards season, the film surprised by winning big at the Golden Globes, before receiving 5 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. This made it one of the worst reviewed titles to receive a nomination. It won 4 Oscars (the most of the night): Best Actor (Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
  • Budget: $52,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $216,668,042.
  • Worldwide gross: $910,809,311.

Other Projects

He has produced many films, particulary in horror. The most famous was the anthology flick Trick 'r' Treat.
He has worked in television. He directed the pilots for Football Wives, Mockingbird Lane, Battle Creek and The Gifted (an X-Men show). But perhaps the most iconic was House M.D., where he directed the first and third episode, served as executive producer and plays himself in a first season episode.

The elephant in the room

Okay, look. We can't discuss Singer without having to address the elephant in the room. It was tough for me to write this, knowing about the scandals. How to recognize his achievements without addressing this? It was impossible for me. So I though the best possible way was to also report on the sexual assault accusations.
Due to character limitations on Reddit, I cannot fully delve into them. This article offers a timeline of the events starting with The Usual Suspects and going all the way up to December 2017. There are four more cases in 2019, which were covered in The Atlantic.
Now you may be wondering, what happened to Singer? Where is he now? Well, he's been living in Israel since 2019 and he is working on a self-financed documentary that addresses the sexual assault claims. Big "OJ: If I Did It" vibes.

10 Apt Pupil 1998 Sony $8,863,193 $0 $8,863,193 $14M
He made 11 films, but only 10 have reported box office numbers. Across those 10 films, he made $3,770,959,266 worldwide. That's $377,095,926 per film.

The Verdict

Singer was clearly influential in the superhero genre. Team-up movies wouldn't be the same without X-Men, and The Usual Suspects is still well known for having one of the greatest twist endings ever. But not everything was a home run; just look at Superman Returns and Jack the Giant Slayer. And that's before we address the sexual assault accusations. Singer was also known for often clashing during filming; the X-Men and Bohemian Rhapsody cast have addressed this and complained that he was absent or arrived late. He may try to get financing from overseas markets, but his career in Hollywood is pretty much over.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Kathryn Bigelow. With International Women's Day coming up, it is important to give the spotlight to a female director.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Baz Luhrmann. Very few films, but a very important director.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
March 4-10 Kathryn Bigelow Any Strange Days fan here? Hello?
March 11-17 M. Night Shyamalan There's no adaptation in Ba Sing Se.
March 18-24 Spike Lee Is he really to blame for the lame Oldboy remake?
March 25-31 Baz Luhrmann 30 years, only 6 films.
Who should be next after Luhrmann? That's up to you.

2024.02.19 12:35 Berrypick "Lifeline movie" database analysis

So I finally caved and got an API key for TMDB to do some light analysis.
One of the first things I was interested in was creating a list of useful "lifeline movies" - i.e. movies that might get you a connection when you're out of lifelines and your back is against the wall. Worth noting that some of these movies are themselves death traps, as anyone who's ever played Avengers: Endgame and found their ass trapped in Sam Jackson or Tilda Swinton might know! :)
I know some people might not consider this to be in the spirit of the game, but I think guessing is a legitimate (albeit quite risky) strategy. As you might notice if you try to use this list - context matters a great deal! If you're in the 1960's or hyper-modern rom-coms, Ocean's Thirteen is unlikely to help you, and I think knowing that and knowing how to use lists like these or similar heuristics are an inherent part of the game.
I used the top 500 actors listed as the "Centers of the Hollywood Universe" according to the Oracle of Bacon (more on their methodology for creating that list here). Then I wrote a short script that uses the TMDB api to:
  1. Find castlists with the largest amount of actors from within our shortlist.
  2. Exclude documentaries and short films.
  3. Rank the results by most shortlist actors who appear in each movie.
This was just a quick and dirty script, there's tons more potential for advanced analytics here which is really cool! Anyway, here's the list:
