2024.05.13 17:31 silveryfeather208 How awfully weird that Jesus' father had seven days, and each day named after other gods...

Hmmm... Suspicious god made the world in the same number of days as the days the Julian calendar used, around the same time when Christianity started to gain popularity.
And its sooo funny that each day has the name of another god.. (Wednesday for "woden/Odin's day)
I'm being silly right now. But honestly. All the obvious parallels to ancient practices should make Christians (and Muslims and Jews) at least question their religion.
I'm gonna make a list just cause.
Easter. Spring rebirth. Jesus rebirth. Christmas. Yule. Enough said. Like wtf do you think yuletide means. Why would we have Christ in it.
Virgin birth. Everyone has done that.
Turning water into wine isn't so impressive when Dionysius did it.

2024.05.13 05:15 SilentSpace To get the support of true progressives, the candidate must genuinely pledge to do everything they can to most of the following:

  1. Raise the minimum wage to the living wage of $30 per hour.
  2. Enact Universal Single-payer Healthcare.
  3. Use taxes to help those with student debt and pay for future education.
  4. Lower the taxes of everyone whose net worth is less than $200,000 (74% of the population) and progressively raise the taxes on everyone else.
  5. Close all tax loopholes, esp for the top 1% of the wealthy.
  6. End the tax-exempt status for religious organizations.
  7. Audit the military-industrial complex, esp. the Pentagon.
  8. Cut the budget (over $1 trillion)of the military-industrial complex by at least half.
  9. Build at least 200 new nuclear power plants in the next 5 years.
  10. Increase funding for Research & Development of Fusion energy from $3 billion to $300 billion.
  11. Reform the electoral system:
a) Pass the Freedom to Vote Act.
b) Enact Final-Five Voting at every level: City, State, and Federal.
(Final-Five Voting is an innovative electoral system that combines Open Primaries with Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV) for the General Election. This system allows the top five vote-getters in the open primary, irrespective of their party affiliation, to advance to the general election. The ultimate goal is to elect a candidate who has the broadest support across the entire electorate, rather than just a simple plurality.
c) Overturn Citizens United and get private money out of politics, esp big money, dark money, and foreign money.
(Citizens United refers to a US Supreme Court case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission , which was decided in 2010. The case addressed the application of campaign finance laws to corporations and unions. Specifically, the Court held that limits on corporate and union spending in political campaigns violated the First Amendment's protection of free speech. The ruling resulted in loosening of restrictions on independent political spending by corporations and unions.)
d) Get rid of the delegates, the superdelegates used in the Democratic Primary election.
(Delegates and superdelegates are individuals who participate in the presidential nomination process of political parties, not the general election.
e) Fix the Electoral College by supporting the National Popular Vote. https://www.nationalpopularvote.com/
(The Electoral College is a group of representatives from each state who formally elect the President and Vice President of the United States.)
f) Use the latest technology, like blockchain, to ensure the integrity of the vote count.
g) Establish same-day voter registration.
  1. Outlaw all PACs, including AIPAC (American Israeli Political Action Committee).
(AIPAC, or the American Israel Public Affairs Committee , is a lobbying group in the United States that advocates for pro-Israel policies to the legislative and executive branches of government.)
  1. Ban members of Congress from becoming lobbyists & trading individual stocks.
  2. Devote at least $50 billion every year to independent political journalists.
  3. Devote at least $50 billion every year to worker-owned businesses.
  4. Allow victims of the Covid vaccines to sue the makers of those vaccines.
  5. Pardon all whistleblowers who expose governmental or corporate wrongdoing, including Edward Snowden, Julian Assange, and Chelsea Manning. Moreover, encourage more whistleblowers to come forward and reward and honor them.
  6. End the $3.5 billion per year aid to Israel until a one-state solution can be worked out with the People of Palestine.
  7. End the stealing of Syria's oil, and apologize and make amends to them.
  8. Apologize and make amends to the People of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, and Palestine for invading, bombing, and occupying their countries.
  9. Legalize all entheogens, like cannabis and psilocybin mushrooms.
(This is not a final list. It is a work in progress.)

2024.05.10 14:48 mental-advisor-25 Great game, but here are some minor nitpicks that made the process feel like a chore

Rather than an explorable joy.
Did play AW back in 2010, when I was an avid gamer back then, and liked such genre.
Now that's I'm older, I'm more of an occasional gamer, decided to play this one for old time's sake.
So I'm coming from a casual gamer POV here, which I assume is what the majority of people who have played this game are.
Given that this is an AAA release (not some indie small game), I do think that the game should be made by taking into account the interest of the most populous chunk of paying customers.
I'm sure nerdy fans or avid gamers, enjoy exploring entire maps, spending countless times learning every nook and cranny, and my younger version would be more like that as well, but as a casual gamer, I think just because there's an area that's not directly tied to a mission, doesn't mean it should be populated with interesting tasks that a player must be burdened with a need to go through, if anything, having this nagging feel of going through every corner in the map, is a major put off. That's what some of the cult stashes felt like for me.
IMO, decrease them by half, increase their reward, have them on places that a player is likely to go through when doing main missions.
For super fans/geeky players, as a fan service, there are optional lunchboxes, whose number can be in the thousands and placed in every difficult spot for all I care.
Personally, I'd rather go around Cauldron Lake map forest area without this nagging feel that I have to look for something somewhere nearby, rather than carelessly strolling and enjoying the beautiful view.
Again, if you're a geeky fan, then I anticipate you'd strongly disagree here, that's fine, the list isn't for you.
The list of nitpicks that made the game feel tedious/like a chore:
  1. After finding Cult of Tree hideout in that underground base, and "discover previous flooded areas" in Watery.
There were too many nursery rhyme puzzles in this map, just two would've been enough, cabin (accessible after floods are gone) and trailer park.
The one in latte/coffee world was unnecessary, as there was enough side events taking place here previously, having to do something again in coffee world after I explored it enough, wasn't so enjoyable for me.
  1. 17.08.23 - bad puzzle from calendar clue, several numbers are circled, how does one know it's after full moon? Seems random. Should be apparent, and players shouldn't have to pause the game to google the solution (which is what most would do).
  2. Cynthia Weaver part - to get power back on, no clear way to figure out on your own.
  3. Cult stash behind sheriff's station - park with symbols too far, no clear guidance to go there.
Majority of players shouldn't be expected to be so attentive, most players, take a break, come back in a few days to continue the game and ad repeatum. Like I did, I played it over the span of 3 weeks personally.
I want to enjoy a game after a day's work of using my brain, I'm okay with puzzles that are fair to solve on your own, without being stuck. Again, when this is written down, you might go "oh, that's pretty simple to solve", but it's a bit different in the context of the game.
For example, I didn't include cult stash at the pier, near fishery shop, #7 here, because even though it's a bit out there, it's kind of fair, if you pay attention nearby it can be figured out on your own within a few minutes.
One of the worst things game devs can do, is assign a good reward for tedious puzzle search/complexity of puzzle itself that would drain lots of time, and break immersiveness from the game, because most people would simply pause the game and look up solution online. And it's natural, can't blame them for that, so just make puzzles that are fair and not too hard to solve on your own without being stuck for more than a minute. Have them be simple enough & interesting, with balanced rewards, so as to encourage most players to do them on their own.
  1. Opening gun in sheriff's station - unclear, alphabet linked to repeating numbers from 1 to 9, so ?? unclear, too vague.
Take another look at the three-part book series (UFOs Myth & Reality) on Breaker’s desk. Going from part one to three, take the first letter of each author’s name and apply the cipher to it.
  1. Oceanview hotel devil play, unclear path towards 108 room, doesn't make it apparent what to do once trail goes cold near that room.
Yes, I know, AW when you first encounter this barricaded room says something like "108 feels important", but still I was kind of stuck, didn't get right away, that I had to pull out a board view again, and put the necessary sticky pad in the scene.
  1. In Cauldron lake map, rental cabins' cult stash key location too fatoo complicated to find. I'd suspect most players had to pause and look up solution online.
These are minor nitpicks that didn't detract too much from the game for me, so I'd still rate it highly at 9.5/10.
Oh, and regarding bugs, I maybe encountered few minor ones? Even though I finished the game a while ago, but only now decided to write the list of nitpicks. I'm not gonna write what I particularly liked about the game, as it'd warrant a separate thread. This is just for those nitpicks, even great games should have some, I think!

2024.05.09 02:13 sharabhi Office 365 Family Plan - One User Multiple Devices

New Office 365 user, long-time 0ffice 2010 user.
I got a new PC and decided to give 365 a shot, in hopes that it would centralized all my emails, calendar and contacts.
I current setup is using my own domain emails as one of the family members for Office 365, but it appears I have to manually add the email IMAP account to each device (PC, outlook online, and cell phone). I added my email account manually to my PC, but that email inbox etc still doesn't show on outlook online and my cell. Does that make sense?
Also, I imported my calendar and contacts to my PC, but it all shows as 'this computer only' and won't sync to outlook online and my cell. Is it supposed to sync? Or it won't because I'm using my own domain email?
If the above doesn't properly sync, i don't see the benefits of subscribing to Office365 and I'm better off saving the $$ and get the standalone version. Until now I've been using Office 2010 successfully without much hassles, but I was really hoping everything would sync between all my devices with office365.

2024.05.09 00:37 Baligram Learning about Balinese Hinduism

A reader of my website Baligram.me recently got in touch with me.
He's a student with a growing interest in Balinese Hinduism and is currently learning the local language, Basa Bali. He's also learning Bahasa Indonesian.
He's is eager to delve deeper into Balinese Hinduism but needs resources available in English. He reached out hoping I could point him in the right direction.
I offered a few recommendations to help him on his journey and thought I would share this here in case it was of interest to others too.
A good starting point, particularly for tourists just wanting to get a light feel for Balinese religion (without going in too deep) is my set of articles here: https://baligram.me/blog/balinese-hinduism-introduction-for-visitors
Here's how I replied:
Thank you for reaching out and for your interest in Balinese Hinduism! It's always exciting to connect with fellow enthusiasts.
Firstly, it's great you are learning Bahasa Bali. I do suggest focussing on Bahasa Indonesia - it's easier to learn and all Balinese speak it. Bahasa Bali is harder and most of the time unless you are fluent you will get answers in Bahasa Indonesian.
However, having some Bahasa Bali will certainly impress and people will warm to you for your effort.
I am not sure how deeply you wish to go, so below are suggestions that range from those suitable to a casual tourist to someone who wants to go much deeper into the topic.
Here are a few recommendations where you can delve deeper into Balinese Hinduism, all with resources or programs in English:
  1. Ubud: Often considered the cultural heart of Bali, Ubud is home to several learning centers that offer courses on Balinese culture and religion. You might want to check out the Ubud Yoga Centre or the Pondok Pekak Library, which occasionally host workshops and talks on Hindu philosophy and practice.
  2. Point (1) is a more superficial experience. If you really want to learn deeply, go to a more remote village and stay with a family for the full 210 Pukawon cycle (the Balinese calendar works on a 210 day cycle) and if you time it right you can experience every daily ceremony and learn about the religion in a very comprehensive way. Combine this with reading "Bali: Sekala & Niskala" by Fred B. Eiseman, Jr. (see below) and you will come away with a better grounding than you could get any other way.
  3. Online Resources: Websites like BaliSpirit.com and LearnReligions.com offer comprehensive articles and guides on Balinese Hinduism. These can be great starting points for understanding the core beliefs and practices before diving deeper on the ground.
  4. University Programs: Look into the Universitas Hindu Indonesia in Denpasar. They offer various courses related to Hinduism and, while primarily in Indonesian, may offer some resources or classes in English or have instructors willing to accommodate English speakers. You could contact some of the academics and ask if they would meet with you and maybe introduce you to their senior students who might be willing to become a mentor to you.
  5. Spiritual Retreats: Bali is known for its spiritual retreats that often incorporate teachings on Balinese Hinduism. These can be immersive ways to learn and experience the religion first-hand. Bali Silent Retreat and Blooming Lotus Yoga are popular spots that offer a blend of yoga, meditation, and spiritual teachings.
  6. Local Temples and Festivals: Participating in local ceremonies and festivals can provide a unique insight into the practical aspects of Balinese Hinduism. Temples like Pura Taman Ayun and Pura Tirta Empul often have guides who speak English and can explain the significance of rituals and temple history.
  7. Reading: You may already have some or all of these great books:
  8. "Bali: Sekala & Niskala" by Fred B. Eiseman, Jr. - This book is split into two volumes, covering both the tangible (sekala) and intangible (niskala) aspects of Balinese culture and religion. It's highly praised for its depth and accessibility.
  9. "Introduction to Balinese Architecture" by Julian Davison - While this book focuses on architecture, it offers valuable insights into the religious and philosophical beliefs that influence Balinese design and temple structures.
  10. "The Bali Bible: The Ultimate Guide to the World's Most Spectacular Tropical Island" by Thibault Masson - This guide includes a section on Balinese culture and religion, providing a good overview for travelers who want to understand the spiritual context of the island.
  11. "Hinduism in Bali: Families and their Faiths" by Angela Hobart - This book explores Hinduism as it is practiced daily in Balinese families, offering a personal look at the rituals and beliefs of the island's main religion.
  12. "Balinese Dance, Drama & Music: A Guide to the Performing Arts of Bali" by I Wayan Dibia and Rucina Ballinger - Understanding local performing arts is another way to deepen one's understanding of Balinese Hinduism, as many dances and dramas are rooted in religious stories and teachings.
I hope these suggestions help you on your journey to deeper understanding of Balinese Hinduism.
Enjoy your learning adventure in Bali!
