2024.05.10 05:47 CaptainIronHammer1 Black Panther + Batman

I’m back with another addition to my Lady Liberty (Captain America + Wonder Woman) and Mercury (Iron Man + Flash - ik I haven’t fleshed out Mercury yet but it will eventually come) universe!
This time, Black Panther + Batman! I haven’t decided the name yet: leaning towards Jackal or Sphinx, but open to any and all suggestions and ideas
Family
Allies
To be able to use the full extent of the Bat-Family, I had to reach a little further out:
__ = Netflix Defenders/ Marvel Knights/ + Bat-Family
While I’m at it, why not include Matt Grayson‘s other team?
__ = Midnight Sons + Teen Titans
To stretch it even further, Black Panther first appeared in a Fantastic Four comic, and Batman formed the Outsiders, so…
__ = Fantastic Four + Outsiders
*Clearly there are still many characters from Wakanda and Gotham and Defenders that I have not utilized (Dora Milajae/ Midnight Angels for example) - I’m open to all suggestions
Villains
Expanding the cast to include the Defenders and Fantastic Four allows far more Batman villains to be used.
All ideas for characters are welcome, feel free to suggest replacements for question marks if you’d like. I’ll update this post as I think of more/ get suggestions

2024.05.08 04:55 Ok_World_8819 Gen Alpha is cooked

Gen Alpha is cooked
As someone who is definitely Gen Z and doesn't know anyone who is Gen Alpha, I am very, very concerned for them.
TL;DR: Gen Alpha is watching or watched poor quality educational shows as kids, such as Ryan's World and Cocomelon. Additionally, the rise of AI could see devastating consequences for them as they enter their adolescence and young adulthood in the 2030s and 2040s.
Gen Alpha's start date is mostly considered to be 2010, to the general public at large (a few say 2013). I would actually consider Gen Alpha to start in 2015, but most people tend to say otherwise.
For the sake of "the popular opinion", I will use a 2010 start date as 99% of the population seems to use it (even if it makes no sense). Like, go on YouTube. Next to no one there considers 2010 to be Gen Z.
The cause of concern is mainly in what they're watching. Skibidi toilet is not the problem. It's the "educational" shows they watch that are the problem.
I could care less about "skibidi toilet"; we had stupid videos and the like as well when we were kids and they were on the same level. Even something like Blippi which is also widely hated outside of the age demographic, isn't really "dangerous" but just "annoying". We had our own "annoying" preschool shows. Barney, Wow Wow Wubbzy, Dora The Explorer, etc.
But Cocomelon and Ryan's World are not just "annoying". They are actively dangerous to kids' minds.
Cocomelon brainwashes kids that watch it (kids get glued into the TV while watching it and have temper tantrums if the parent cuts it off) and has constant jump cuts with a super fast pace. There is no story to Cocomelon, no likeable characters with personalities, not even a moment of silence or calmness.
Ryan's World does contain more of a story and there are characters with personalities, but it's filled with commercialism and advertisements, and none of those characters (Combo Panda, Alpha Lexa, Gus The Grummy Gator) are memorable at all. Oh, and Ryan's parents are exploiting their child for money and fame.
Instead of being given quality educational programming, Gen Alpha is being given a tablet and are sat in front of a screen watching Cocomelon or Ryan's World. And that doesn't even mention Elsagate, which is making a big comeback in the mid-2020s.
Cocomelon has no effort put into it whatsoever. There are studies showing that it warps the minds of the kids who watch it.
People on YouTube are just saying that "Gen Alpha is so cringe" or are making fun of them for watching skibidi toilet.
I don't have that feeling towards them. I feel genuinely terrible for Gen Alpha. It's their parents who are at fault. They are the ones who are giving their kids the iPads.
To be clear: Not every parent with a Gen Alpha child is bad.
While there are many very naive/irresponsible parents with Gen Alpha kids, that doesn't make every single parent bad. There are a few Gen Alpha kids growing up with great educational shows old and new. Puffin Rock and Bluey are two good modern-day examples.
But I find it pretty damn ironic that Gen Alpha is being exposed to Cocomelon so much considering how many iconic educational shows their parents were able to grow up with.
The parents of Gen Alpha are primarily (but not entirely) made up of Xennials, Millennials and Zillennials, who grew up watching (for the most part) much higher quality educational shows. Some Gen X and Gen Z parents too, but not as common.
All of those people got to grow up with some great educational shows as kids:
3-2-1 Contact and Square One TV for Xennials, The Magic School Bus and Bill Nye The Science Guy for Millennials, Dragon Tales and Between The Lions for Zillennials.
And shows that Millennials and Gen Z experienced as they were new (Arthur, Cyberchase, Bear In The Big Blue House, Blues Clues, and debatably, the aforementioned Dragon Tales and Between The Lions).
Dragon Tales (along with Bear In The Big Blue House) seems to be one of those shows that unites almost all Zillennials.
Even something such as Barney The Dinosaur has far more care and effort put into it than Cocomelon ever will. The only truly harmful educational show from back then was Caillou, and even then it was surrounded by tons of great educational shows for kids on the same channel (PBS Kids) so kids weren't solely watching Caillou. In fact, Arthur, Clifford, Cyberchase and Dragon Tales were all just as popular in the 2000s (more popular, arguably).
Many kids are watching Cocomelon and nothing else; if they do, most of the time the other shows they watch are completely inappropriate and/or are of very poor quality.
Of course, that doesn't mean there aren't any good shows kids today have. The Owl House and Bluey are two popular cartoons of the 2020s that Gen Alpha could've watched.
Unfortunately, kids are not the ones watching these; Bluey seems to be far more popular with adults than kids and the same is true with The Owl House.
And even shows that are still running, like Sesame Street and Cyberchase, aren't as popular with Gen Alpha as Cocomelon or Ryan's World.
You would think these parents would know better and raise their kids with the shows they grew up with, but many of them couldn't care less what their kids watch. They don't care about the quality of what their child is watching and just want to get their kid to shut up.
God knows what Gen Alpha is watching on YouTube Kids...
The worst thing about this is the fact that many Gen Alpha kids have unrestricted access to YouTube Kids, a site where someone could label a Final Destination death scene as "made for kids", and a 6 year old could watch it on YouTube Kids and be forever traumatized. It's easier than one would think! You can easily find 18+ material on the kids version of the site, and not just gore but also South Park and Futurama (which are not meant for kids at all).
And then there's the rise of AI.
Unlike previous generations, Gen Alpha will never know a world without AI, at least one where it wasn't a part of daily life. Even the younger members of Gen Z had their childhood largely free from the era of AI, growing up as kids in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
The oldest of Gen Alpha was no older than 12 years old when ChatGPT came out; there are many rumors that Disney's Wish was written at least partially by AI. By the time the oldest members of Gen Alpha become adults during the very late 2020s, AI will be more advanced than we could've ever imagined even today.
We've seen what AI can do, and it is very frightening. AI-generated images, music, sentences and scripts, and even AI-generated video. What will this be like by 2032, when the very oldest of Alpha turn 22 and start graduating from college?
Gen Alpha could be the first generation ever to lack any real social life at all, instead relying completely on AI for consuming pop culture (movies, games, books, music, etc).
In the year 2037, instead of having real human friends, a Gen Alpha 20 year old adult might have an AI-generated anime waifu girlfriend with an AI voice go with them to watch a movie written and made by AI.
That sounds crazy in 2024, but 13 years is a long time. Not even 5 years ago, AI-generated music, art and videos of higher quality would've been unthinkable to the general public at large. Now it is almost certainly going to happen.
I doubt any of our elected officials will do anything to try and stop this. It may already be too late to stop AI from taking over. And if it is, Gen Alpha really is cooked. And it'll be every other generation's fault.
I blame Gen Z for making fun of Gen Alpha instead of trying to combat the issues they're dealing with. We're not helping by mocking them for liking skibidi toilet videos, and gatekeeping the youngest members of Gen Z from our generation and our nostalgia. And the oldest members of Gen Z are already old enough to have kids, and i'm very concerned about that as well considering how X and Millennials are raising their Alpha kids.
I feel so, so bad for Gen Alpha. Please don't mock them for liking a stupid YouTube meme. Try and do whatever you can to help them. To save them from Cocomelon and Ryan's World and AI. Please raise your Gen Alpha kids right.

I’ll start this with a huge apology. It was never my intention to take so long on my break or to post a thank you for all the amazing mail you’ve been sending. A few months were super… not stellar, and I just kind of wanted to hide under a rock so I wouldn’t bother anyone until I could feel a bit more like myself, and with all of that, you guys have just been the sweetest. I got so many sweet messages checking in and felt so loved despite the fact that it’s taken me half a year to get back on here. Thanks for all your patience with me. You guys are the absolute greatest! <3
An additional thanks to u/pinkpengin for sending a card basically inviting me to come back to the cool kid’s table to play this week! :D
Allsssooo also, I wrote half of these in January if any of them are odd, and I’ve also not detailed the cards that have been sent to family members as I didn’t read them myself, just added them on my count here, and sorry if the formatting is a bit wonky. I'm copying this from a document, so I might edit if it's terrible.
To start, I received a fun Meet-Up card from some now irl friends on here! Thank you guys! I really wish I could have made it to this one:
u/lonelytwatwaffle (x3)
u/Jane_Q
u/JaimeKJ
u/kittycatcon
u/babyraspberry (x6), You sent such happy mail with your world postcard day envelope! I love the picture of a beach in Portugal. It makes me want to take a vacay ASAP! I also loved the fun little fact you put about the Peach Springs, AZ USPS! So cool! You also included cute star cut-outs, a little packet of stickers, and washi on what looks like a fun space cat playing card! I’m seriously giddy to get to the pic!
Thank you so much for the sweet hot cocoa and New Year’s card you sent! You also included a pretty saguaro cactus card and lovely pastry scrapbook paper, because you’re so thoughtful like that! I love how pretty every single envelope and card is that you send! I’m also excited to hear that you’re getting settled into the new(er) place a bit more! I hope you had a great time with the family visits!
Oh, my goodness, the wintery cards you sent my way were just stunning! I really liked hearing about your walk on the frozen lake and what an adorable “Cake of Friendship” recipe! The stamp stickers are always just the perfect colotheme, too! It always gives me heart eyes!
u/bluedecemberart (x5), Your Halloween card was adorable! You made it even cuter with the stickers. You mentioned “catching up on mail someday”........... Lol! You sent me about 50 cards to my…. ahem… completely non-existent ones. You’re a treasure, friend!
Thank you so much for my massive care packet of cards in an envelope that was just the cutest, with cats and Totoro stickers! It was beautiful! Every single bit in the envelope was so thoughtful!
You sent a “You’ve Got Mail” postcard, which reminds me… I should rewatch that movie someday so u/comingtogetyoubabs can stop laughing at the fact that I mix up all the Meg Ryan/Billy Crystal movies. I can’t be the only one… or maybe I am?!
You also sent the cutest envelope and added little address cardstock labels to add some zest to my envelopes along with so many cute stickers of cats, dogs, and squirrels! So sweet! I really loved the “Support Your Local Librarians” sticker! We are so lucky to live close to a very nice library with super active librarians who really care about the community, and it breaks my heart that they’re being given extra nonsense to add to their worries right now. :(
I especially love the card that has “You can do anything! Just not Everything” on the front. What a perfect reminder. You are so caring and thoughtful, and I’m so thankful for you!
u/comingtogetyoubabs (x5) How do you always find the perfect cards and things to say?! I love the whole envelope filled with citrus-themed cards, stickers, washi, all of it! Your puns were cracking me up! You even made the address label with little lemons! Super cute!
Then you also sent cards that were bee-related and stickers galore! I’m pretty sure that’s the first cat bee return label I saw in-person! They are adorable!
You sent a fun fall card with such pretty watercolor animals on it! The little hedgie sticker matches perfectly! It’s giving me heart eyes! Thank you, m’dear!
u/constructionlower549 (x7) Ugh, your holiday postcards are always so cute! I love the pic with you and the pupper (both smiling) on the front! It’s seriously so sweet and happy! I also loved the sweet card you sent with the New Year’s plans/updates. It’s seriously been entirely too long since I’ve sent an update! I definitely agree… Christmas is a bit overwhelming for me every year, tbh. I always look forward to the New Year knowing that we’ve made it through another hectic season of cooking/visits/everything! XD I always feel like I drop so many balls and last year was one of the biggest times I’ve done that. I didn’t even send holiday cards last year. :/
What a cool Starbucks postcard! I had no idea they even had postcards, but I love the gold and white on this one! The sparkly purple pen you used on it is just chef’s kiss perfection! Thank you!
I loved hearing about your bday trip! It sounds like such a fun adventure! I know you mentioned you did a lot of HUGE things, but I saw, “hung out by the pool,” and for some reason that part was the bit that I was like, “WHOA! WHAT?! IN FEB?! …living her best life by going somewhere beautiful!” XD
Then I got the most cards (I really, really love the hydrangea ones) with backstories from some of the postcards you sent! <3 I loved hearing about your dog-sitting adventure! Ugh, I need to send you a recipe for ice cream when you’re there next time! It’s blueberry pie-flavored, and it’s basically the only one I make in the summers, though I haven’t made it for a few summers now. I was laughing at the “behind-the-scenes” stories from your trips! It’s so funny catching up with people from school, especially when they’ve become parents! It almost feels like a secret club sometimes, knowing things about them but only discussing it in front of kids basically in code language! XD Oh! You asked at the end… I think the postcard lady would definitely be the highest contender for my demise! Lol! I’d totally take an entire litter of rabid cats over her! :D
u/cswl (x6), Thank you for the lovely Halloween card with the glittery witch skirt and the little cat on a walk! So cute! Our cat actually loves taking walks on his harness, but it’s been too cold to go out with him recently, and our old sweet old man of a dog thinks it’s a bit of a pain to go out on big walks now too. Can’t wait for spring! (I wrote this part of your thank-you in January! Spring has been nice indeed!)
The school supply postcard is so cute! I love LouPaper designs and the little rounded edges! The bright rainbow colors on it is just so happy! <3
Such a great “M” card made out of mustaches, too! Very cool design!
What a cool Veteran’s Day card you sent my way! I haven’t seen very many for the holiday, so it was super fun to get one! Thank you!
I also liked your secret “Walt Whitman” card. I have been wondering how work has been going for you. I have done some “extra” work tidying myself at old jobs when I’ve been feeling less than good about them myself.
It was also fun hearing about the 2 festivals in one weekend… was super happy you didn’t have to cook that weekend! That’s kind of a mini-vacation in itself!
u/DoraDoodle (x4), You sent such a pretty Halloween card as well as such adorable cats in costume stickers! They were so sweet! You even finished off the card with a tiny skull and crossbones stamp on the back. Your attention to detail makes everything so perfect! I always love seeing how you perfectly coordinate the papers to make such nice designs!
We all loved your gorgeous handmade Christmas card! It was displayed with the ones we received from family! I definitely missed out on the fun and didn’t send a single holiday card last year. :(
Oh, my goodness, I loved getting your beautiful watercolor card from your trip. That is actually one of our family’s bucket list places! Were you able to catch the Northern Lights while there? I hope you were treated with a lovely view!
u/ez330 (x4), I loved the colorful tulip card you sent and hearing about what had been happening with you. Thank you for checking in with me! You also included such sweet stickers, one of a corgi cupcake that I absolutely adore! Our dog is red with the cute Dorito ears like a corgi, so I’m a little partial to those types of breeds because of him! <3
Oh, my goodness, how was your trip to the National Postal Museum?! My grandma was a retired postmaster, and I think she would’ve loved traveling there! I hope you had the best time!
I loved getting your sweet flower heart postcard too! Thank you so much for caring and sending notes my way. You’re so thoughtful!
What a gorgeous handmade Valentine’s Day card! The light aqua blue with red were actually my wedding colors, so every time I see them together, it just makes me smile! Thank you for thinking of me! It made my day!
u/isar-love, I loved your dragonfly postcard! I love learning differences in language and I really think “dragonfly” is much prettier in yours! My son has a book about bugs from close-up views, and the dragonfly picture is on the cover! I always thought that photograph was especially pretty! He’s terrified of bugs now, unfortunately, but every time I see a dragonfly now, I think of when he first asked if they were actual dragons as a preschooler, and I thought it was just so cute!
u/Jdoodle7 (x4) Thank you so much for sending such sweet cards my way to check on me! My birthday card was just so pretty, and I really like how you did the washi on a diagonal. It really set off the envelope! You even have birthday return address labels, and I just absolutely adore them!
I have out another card you sent recently, the one mentioning Monty Python! Oh, my word! I am so excited to meet someone who gets my references now! :D Poor E, I had to introduce him to it years ago when he mentioned he’d never seen it (can you believe it?!), but now he grudgingly chuckles or rolls his eyes when I quote it in passing!
u/jvanct88, Thank you so much for the super pretty I’m thinking of you card with a holo cat silhouette! I loved getting the life updates! Just so you know, I can’t use the tea you sent because the little packets are so cute! Oh, they’re in with my tea, yes, but only for showing off the cute designs on display! :) Thank you! <3
u/korewrites (x2), thank you for the postcards you’ve been sending my way! I liked hearing about your travels to visit friends. The place you went in January sounds particularly exciting! I hope you had the best time catching up with them!
u/libertyprogrammer, thank you for the lovely card with the super fun stamps on them! What a good idea to send it before the price increased (again), too! The stickers match the pretty dusty rose color of the envelope and I love how you made the card inside with such cute Snoopy washi! It is so good hearing from you! Oh, I might have mentioned in the last post, but I have finished all of your book recs, and I was absolutely blown away by one series in particular! Kind of bouncing up and down over the fact that a certain author has new author pics!!! Did you see?! I know everyone online is saying not to get our hopes up, so OF COURSE MY HOPES ARE SKY HIGH that we get a new book ASAP! :D I can’t believe there are some people who have been waiting for decades when I’ve only been excited for a few months!
u/LeeElla, thank you for the sweet card with the cherry blossoms and cute washi and stickers! I loved getting to hear about your travels. I feel like my family and I will start doing a small bit more of that this year finally, and I love hearing where others have been!
Also, your writing is lovely!
u/lonelytwatwaffle, I loved hearing about your beach trip! What a nice getaway! My family took trips there when I was little. I think it was maybe the first time I saw the ocean! It sounded like such a nice, relaxing time! I hope you had a blast!
u/mikepenpal6 (x5) I loved your purple Halloween card with the pumpkin and owl! What pretty scrapbook paper in the background, too! You always find the most festive and adorable carding supplies!
What a gorgeous handmade Christmas card! I love how glitzy it is with the little rhinestones and all the cute stickers and washi you used! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Ooh, I loved hearing about the concert you saw! That would’ve been so incredible! I’m super jealous and also really excited that you could go! I saw that one of my faves is going to be about 2 hours away from me very soon, so I went on the ticket site to buy them. E said that I definitely should, but I told him, “Meh, it’d be way past my bedtime.” lol I’m such an old lady now.
Your handmade Valentine’s Day card was absolutely stunning! I always love seeing the cute little gemstone stickers ppl use! I actually didn’t do a ton for this Valentine’s Day. I usually bake for our littles, make them a heart-shaped pizza for dinner, and cook something for E that he likes, but this year, our tiniest got covid (on my birthday! boo!), so we were all sick by Valentine’s Day, and we basically stayed at the house for the rest of the month to make sure we didn’t spread the joy to anyone else. Yuck! I really am glad you were able to do fun things and enjoy the weather with the family!
u/mlks00 (x2), Thank you so much for the sweet Christmas card you sent to the fam and me, especially with the handmade snowflake! How cool! I feel like I haven’t done those in too long. Have you seen the ones you can print online with Star Wars characters snuck into the designs?! They look so cute!
I always love getting your check-ins and updates! I really like this “hello” card stationery too! How classy! I hope you’re doing well, friend!
u/monetmonkey- Oh, what an adorable avocado holiday card! Thank you! Not only that, but you included such cute stickers with a sweet fox and snowy day scene! I loved all of it as well as how you decorated the inside of the card with the diagonal washi. Such a cool effect!
Of course I loved the fun stamps, especially the Maine Coon one! Our kitkat isn’t quite as massive as that, but he’s close, at over 7.5 kg/17ish lbs!
Loved the way you addressed the envelope vertically, too! It really made it stand out!
u/mydinosaurdidit (x8) You sent such happy mail to me last FALL (it’s been way too long since I’ve been here), and it was just so touching that you thought of me for it. It’s beautiful, thoughtful, and I was so taken aback at your generosity! Know that I have it set out for my next project now! I’ve been waiting to make something with it for the summer, and I’m so excited! I’ll send pics when I get it finished! I’ve had a pattern I’ve been wanting to make, but I’ve not had the right materials…until now, and the fact that it’s sentimental is just the cherry on top!
Oh, you gave me ideas for my bullet journal by sending me a sample-type page, and I really like how you have it set up! I’ve been book journaling a bit more lately and still use a bullet journal for my busier months, but I’ve been converting most of the dates to a wall calendar and still using a bullet-style on there for the tasks. It’s so helpful!
What a pretty holiday card you sent with tea and everything! I loved the adorable little paper stars to match the color of the font, and the message made me laugh!
I got the sweetest check-in card from you, typed and everything. It made me a bit teary-eyed. You even included journaling pages and stickers. You are so thoughtful, friend. A few months there were super not super, and I just kind of wanted to hide, and there you were telling me it was okay to just exist. You’re an absolute treasure. <3
Then you sent a kitty postcard with “You’re alive!” on it, and I burst out into laughter! It made me think of Schrödinger's cat, and it just made me ridiculously happy on top of it just being so freakin’ adorable! Thank you, friend!
Such a cool state card you sent! I like the ones with the different flowers/flags/birds on them to see how many I remember from my fourth grade class! :D We visited our state capitol building (where I lived growing up) during school, and the only part I remember was being so nervous that I’d be too loud walking around the halls with the echo-y marble floors… and then I suddenly stopped fretting over that when I realized how slippery the stone made the stairs and imagined falling down them making way more noise than walking funny ever would. XD I was a nervous child… glad I’m not anymore….ummm :D
Thank you for the sweet birthday wishes as well! You handmade a gorgeous pop-up card with a rainbow quilt, and it just blew me away!
The second (!) kitty postcard you made with all the rainbow writing/washi/stickers was just so happy! It made me smile!
u/onelittlericeball (x4), thank you so much for the gorgeous cards you send! I always love seeing your handwriting and the pretty washi/sticker combos you use!
I really liked getting updates on things that have been going on with you lately. It's so nice hearing from you, and I have your latest in my "reply ASAP" stack now!
u/pinkpengin (x7) The fam loved our cute black cat purpley Halloween card! The Halloween donut washi you have is top notch!
Your Jane Goodall Institute card is so cool! She’s one of my heroes (as are you, of course)! I actually bought this little amigurumi book where you could make little feminist icons, mostly because one of the characters is her! I digress… Okay, so as of that card, you had 22 kitters… have there been any more foster fails since then (bc I can absolutely say I’d be such an enabler about that! I nearly got another one myself last month)?
Oh, what a cute little fox riding a bike! I think these notecards are just adorable! You absolutely did not need to write a thank-you, but of course you’re just super sweet and thoughtful like that, and it made me smile! :)
Your sweet holiday card was displayed with the family cards we received this year, and it was so cute! Thank you! We all really enjoyed it. Maybe I’ll get my act together by winter and send some myself this year?! Here’s to hoping!
You also sent such a sweet Valentine with two additional mini cards inside! You are so thoughtful. The envelope was so pretty with how you decorated it! I think Valentine’s Day might be my favorite holiday… I don’t really do anything to celebrate other than baking, but I think that’s maybe why I like it! It’s low stakes! :D
You also sent an extra special holiday card VERY recently… but I’ll be commenting on that one elsewhere. ;)
u/TigerLady13 (x4), I really loved the Christmas card you sent! The stamps were so cute on the envelope, and the Santa in the woods feeding apples to the horses were so just so pretty! Thank you so much!
You have been sending such sweet cards my way! Thank you! My birthday cards were so super sweet. Both were decked out with the cutest washi and stickers galore! You are so very thoughtful! I really like the envelopes! They both had ribbon streamers on the insides of them! How festive!
u/travel4me22, thank you for the fun Blue Ridge Parkway postcard saying hello and checking in! That was so thoughtful! I hope your year has been great so far!
u/umeshufan (x14!) Your pop-up llama card (so cute!) along with an additional note was so cute to get! I really liked the signatures that you and a family member added to it! It was from 15 Nov, so I had the biggest smile reading about a recent event that happened there! <3
The Christmas card you sent made me laugh! I’ve seen shirts with that sentiment on motorcycle drivers, and to see it on the back of a reindeer was just the absolute best! XD You find the most hilarious cards! I definitely need to up my card game!
Thank you so much for the beautiful cards from all your travels over the past 6 months as well as sending notes to other family members! You have been to so many places already this year, and it’s always fun getting to live vicariously through your descriptions of each place!
The NZ sheep postcard is adorable with the little sheep, and I loved hearing about each stop along the way. The “Where’s Wally/Waldo?” one is extra cool! Thank you for sharing it with us! You’re always so thoughtful!
Oh! One of the cards you sent from NZ had another person added to the card, and I don’t know if I’m mentioned, but I think their handwriting is just beautiful! I especially like their A’s! That was so sweet hearing from them as well!
During one of your trips, you were in the same time zone as I was, and I was so excited to get FOUR cards from there! It was so fun getting cards that arrived so very quickly! I always love seeing The Snooty Bookshop cards! They’re hilarious!
You also sent 6 cards just last month, completely putting me to shame! I have them out for a reply just as soon as I pick up some different cards from the store. I think part of my extra long hiatus has made me not want to dig out the perfectly fine old cards I had but start fresh… capitalism at its finest, I suppose… :/
Thank you for sending so many cards to the family over the past half year as well. Your cards always brighten our day! You’ll be getting some replies from E soon, too. He’s not been on RAoC recently either, so I’m adding some of his on my post for him.

Three special things for u/stewblock2023
Hello, everyone! My name is u/Lazy_Arrival4516, and I have three special things for my friend u/stewblock2023! Yes, three of them. So let’s start off with the first one, which is an upcoming refreshed version of Toño Prada’s cartoon mural. You know? The mural created by Spanish graffiti artist Toño Prada for INCIBE while it’s inspired by three hybrid crossover Disney movies called Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers and Once Upon A Studio, as well as many other crossovers like Super Smash Bros., Peter Kay's Animated All-Star Band from Children in Need, The Children's Party at the Palace, every single bumper from Cartoon Network's 20th Birthday, the Simpsons and Family Guy crossover, and many other crossovers due to various iconic cartoon characters on it? Yep! But this time, it will be a blank longer version of the mural, with its gates having the same shape. It will have the same characters from the mural, but also, “more characters”. Plus, the characters will be completely white drawings with black bolder and no details when they’re in the base. Also, the drawings will have each number on them, representing more than 268 cartoon characters. But don’t worry! I’ll make sure that u/stewblock2023 will handle this, by painting the mural to what the fan-made version looks like! Here’s the numbered list of all the characters in order:

Also, one more thing. Why is Sheep staring at Weegee instead of staring at his baby carriage containing Impaeegee since both of these characters are creepy due to their faces? I have no words. BTW, the Blue and Pink image is created by hakurinn0215. Plus, here’s the image for it:
NOTE: I'm hard to add the drawings and numbers.
The next one is about Toño Prada’s cartoon mural again, but this time, with characters from animations by Joe (and Danielle Kogan)! The mural will have the same thing as the previous one, with a slight difference that the mural is now shaped like the original version of Toño Prada’s cartoon mural. Also, the drawings will have each number on them, representing more than 37 Ukinojoe characters. Also, the gates will not be painted because they’re going to be dark-brown like in Toño Prada’s cartoon mural. But let’s not forget the list:
  1. The Sphinx from The Last Dinosaur.
  2. Replacement Bully.
  3. Audrey & Victor.
  4. Jade.
  5. Indiada Jodes.
  6. Blonic (on a brick wall) and Blails.
  7. Potbot.
  8. The dancing dolphin from chillphin.
  9. Iron Bad.

  26. Mojo Jojo (Mojo Oh No version only).
  27. The Literally Hitler version of Adolf Hitler (NOTE: the Literally Hitler version is way better than the original).

  31. The Great: The Show version of Yoda.

  34. The Rabbit version of Bugs Bunny.
  35. The cursed Shrek model from Cursed Shrek Scene.
  36. Frank from Meme High School.
  37. Hank Hill (Bobby’s New Hobby version only).
He can also add the reddish-pink “THIS IS GREAT” text in the bottom of the front, a large computer screen that displays the Great: The Show logo behind Bella Caramella, the Fan Con from Great: The Show in the background behind the computer screen, and even the stuff from the MAD intro in the same background! Here’s a list of said stuff:
  • The colorful floor.
  • The sky of spotty clouds, flying logos and different colors (blue, cyan, orange-yellow, and purple).
  • Various claymation buildings (crane, palm, wooden bridge, etc.).
  • Various claymation vehicles (blue car, red car, helicopter, bird-winged airplane, school bus, etc.).
  • Various claymation versions of various additional characters (unnamed angry man, Spider-Man, Shrek, SpongeBob, Tow Mater, Optimus Prime, Steak Guy, monkey ballerina, Yellow Guy, Bloo, Woody, Batman, Buzz Lightyear, Charizard, and Cinnamon Bun).
  • The alien from Mike Wartella’s Spacenook.
Plus, Blonic’s face is edited to have a smile because he gives me a thumb up. Now, here’s the image for it. It can be similar to the previous one but let’s check it out.
NOTE: Again, I'm hard to add the drawings and numbers.
And last but not least is a new upcoming video, which contains the fan-made versions of both scenes from Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers where Sweet Pete transforms into his bootleg form, Frankenpete, by the malfunctioning machine! And yes, this video is inspired by a Reddit comment about the fan-made versions of both forms of the character, but we don’t include the voices (except for Marie’s meow and a version of Wreck-It Ralph’s catchphrase) for this video because it doesn’t have the scenes where Frankenpete started chasing Chip and Dale. Why? Because like I said, this is an edited version of said scene. Here’s the screenshots of the comment that will inspire the video:
https://preview.redd.it/ntw8a3x2sfyc1.png?width=1141&format=png&auto=webp&s=6e630eb4661c855af2c460f73ea999f0d54653a0
Anyway, let’s check out the video’s plot. First, it has two different languages: in the beginning, the language is Latin-American Spanish before it changes to a high-pitched version of the English language from the original film (can be seen on the Villains Wiki page of Sweet Pete) during the scene where Frankenpete was created. Also, it basically uses the “Sweet Pete transforms into Frankenpete” scene from the Latin-American dub of Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers, with a few differences:
  • The transformation sound effects from Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared 6 are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation.
  • The Hanna-Barbera sound effects are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation.
  • The Ed, Edd n’ Eddy sound effects are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation.
  • The sound effects from the Johnny Bravo intro are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation.
  • Various clips from What the Fuck? by 64marjo64 are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation in the fog.
  • Various videoclips from Intolerance III (e.g. the scenes from the Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody music video by Andreas Hykade and Louis Prima featuring the eye-popping Louis Prima cat and the shocked female mouse) are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation in the fog.
  • Frankenfruit’s defeat is added when Sweet Pete falls into the ground during his transformation in the fog.
  • The sword and blood from Willa’s Normal Life are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation in the fog.
  • Homer Simpson’s shape-shifting body from the Don Hertzfeldt Couch Gag is added when Sweet Pete falls into the ground during his transformation in the fog.
  • The mutated blue morphing montage from Andreas Hykade’s Love & Theft is added after Homer Simpson’s shape-shifting body becomes a yellow liquid during Sweet Pete’s transformation.
  • The added parts from the Reddit comment are added during Sweet Pete’s transformation and the Frankenpete scene.
Well, that’s all for today! And u/stewblock2023! If you’re reading this, do the stuff I’ve just mentioned! Anyways, see ya later!

2024.04.20 16:15 Striking-End-3384 "Listen up, folks. The beloved childhood icon, Dora Márquez from Dora the Explorer, has made a grave mistake and it's time to call her out.

In her latest video this morning, titled "Asking YOU to Ask ME Questions Was a MISTAKE," Dora has proved that she is nothing but an attention-seeking sellout. I mean, really Dora? Asking your fans to ask you questions and then complaining about it? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. And let's not forget the title of the video itself - "it was Dora, get wrecked." Who does she think she is, a tough internet troll? Newsflash, Dora, you're a cartoon character. Time to ditch the attitude and stick to teaching kids how to count to ten and say "Hola." Asking for questions and then insulting your fans? That's a recipe for disaster. Get it together, Dora."

2024.04.20 02:11 Competitive_Travel16 Brainstorm the next generation of LLM user experiences: beyond texting-style chats

In response to my questions to LLMs, I want an option for a single screen outline I can click on to expand, question, get sources for, and illustrate individual items.
When I find mistakes, hallucinations, or confabulated sources, I want to be able to highlight and report them specifically, instead of just clicking on a thumbs down icon. Doing so should bring up a statement browser for fine-tuning directly, submitting a subject for RLHF, or making direct corrections to LORA/DORA model weights by selecting and correcting statements, sources, sentences and clauses starting from prompt outputs in a WYSIWYG way.
What are your visions for the future of LLM UXs?

2024.04.18 19:41 SmellySchnitzel Eurovision watch party: Top 37 (ranking)

I’ve seen quite a few tops posted on the sub and I wanted to add my contribution no one asked for! But I did it in a different way: as per tradition since last year, I torture… I mean, convince three of my friends who are not Eurofans to listen with me to all 37 songs. Afterwards, we rank them and have a big reveal, from bottom to top.
Last year, our average winner was Austria with “Who the Hell is Edgar?”. A banger indeed, which won by a short margin against the runner up Czechia with “My Sister’s Crown”. Will the top two stay the same? Let’s find out.
To make it easier and not write a whole wall of text (challenge: impossible) for every entry, everything will be summarized with the two most divergent opinions (well, most of the time). Jurors (aka, me, and my victims friends) will be named A, B, C and D because as you can tell, I am hella inspired and creative. Right? Right. The talks are actually conversations we’ve had in the night, as faithfully transcribed as I could (don't blame me if some are short, my memory isn't the best). Alright, let’s proceed:
37. Germany (Isaak – Always on the Run)
(A: 34 – B: 33 – C: 29 – D: 37)
Juror C: “Meh. It’s not bad and this guy has a good voice, but I’d be shocked if it did well at Eurovision. There’s definitely worse than that but it’s just not very impressive”.
Juror D: “I really don’t like this. Why do you even send something so impersonal and unoriginal to a song contest? I literally forgot about it during the listening session. Hard pass Germany”.
36. Azerbaijan (Fahree feat. Ilkin Dovlatov - Özünlə Apar)
(A: 29 – B: 36 – C: 34 – D: 33)
Juror A: “I really thought I’d actually like this when listening to the first verse. I have three standout points: Fahree’s beautiful vocals, the string section, and the build up to the first chorus. But once we get there, nothing really progresses, and it just doesn’t stick at all. I get what they are trying to do. I can appreciate the atmosphere, but it really misses something. The beat feels out of place, and Ilkin’s addition rather forced and artificial. I think I put my finger on it: it lacks a sense of authenticity. There’s promise though. I’ll wait and see for the staging.”
Juror B: “If the song I ranked last wasn’t so boring, this would be last. It’s just so flat as a whole and feels really emotionless and artificial. That’s a skip guys!”
35. Israel (Eden Golan – Hurricane)
(A: 32 – B: 37 – C: 30 – D: 29)
Juror D: “Yeah, it’s fine, but nothing special. It’s like some of these ballads you hear every year at Eurovision but that you forget rather easily. I like the singer, she has an Ariana Grande vibe and a powerful voice, but there’s no emotion in what she sings. If it was all in Hebrew, maybe it would stand out more.”
Juror B: “Ballad.exe, do I need to say more? I’m not a fan of her voice, I find the lyrics really poorly written and the song super predictable. I didn’t like Estonia last year, but even Estonia felt much better than this.”
34. Sweden (Marcus & Martinus – Unforgettable)
(A: 25 – B: 32 – C: 35 – D: 35)
Juror A: “Honestly? The instrumental really slaps, and I love the staging. These guys are pros, there’s no denying that and their voices complement each other well. But as catchy as it is, the song has a hard time sticking with me. The most memorable part to me is how bad the lyrics actually are, and that’s not a good sign. I swear I wish I’d rank Sweden higher; I liked them a lot in 2022 and 2023 but this time, I’m not so convinced. It’s not really a skip, but it’s not a song I’d go out of my way to listen to. But it’s definitely not bad!”
Juror D: “It’s just ironic that a song called Unforgettable is actually so forgettable. I didn’t like the vocals and their boy’s band’s vibe, I didn’t care for the staging and I hated the lyrics too. It just feels manufactured for Eurovision and that’s about it. And ending it on a bridge? No thank you.”
33. Latvia (Dons – Hollow)
(A: 27 – B: 31 – C: 36 – D: 32)
Juror A: “I thought it’d go lower, but I actually quite like the verses. There’s a depth in Dons’s voice that doesn’t leave me indifferent, and this guy really carries this song on his shoulders. Seriously, give that man a song that would make his voice shine even more! I just wish he was a better performer. As it stands out, he is a fantastic singer, but the emotion doesn’t translate all too well on stage. But we’re rating studio cuts, so 27th feels high enough. I’m let down by the chorus, but I’m sure there’s an audience for it. Might not be so DOA.”
Juror C: “The only thing I remember about this is the dude being bald. Oh, and yeah, he sings well, but I really don’t care about this song, it’s really flat and boring. Doesn’t stand much of a chance tbh.”
32. Iceland (Hera Björk – Scared of Heights)
(A: 37 – B: 22 – C: 32 – D: 26)
Juror A: “There’s two songs I find unlistenable this year. This is one of them, and my actual dead last place. Hera seems very sweet, and I enjoyed “Je Ne Sais Quoi” quite a bit, but I just have a hard time sitting through the whole three minutes of this without feeling annoyed. I hate how dated the whole sound is, Hera’s voice enhances that feeling of annoyance for some reason I don’t quite get, I really can’t stand the chorus and I can’t stand these synths. Even in 2003, this would have been extremely outdated. Iceland, you had Blankiflúr and Bashar Murad right there.”
Juror B: “Don’t hate me but I quite like this. Hera gives fun wine mom vibes you’d go to the karaoke with and yes it’s dated but we need at least once song like that at Eurovision. It reminds me of the 2000s! It’s just a fun song that won’t do anything in the contest, but you enjoy it when it’s on!”
31. Albania (Besa Kokëdhima – Titan)
(A: 35 – B: 35 – C: 18 – D: 27)
Juror B: “I’m not feeling this, this is just really boring. I don’t get why it’s in English? I prefer Albania’s entries in their native language, it really doesn’t feel special or even Albanian. The production is super cheap too. Her voice is not bad but it’s not enough to be memorable. It’s a skip for me!”
Juror C: “To me all the pop girls feel a little bit the same, but this is one of the best ones, mostly because of the singing. I’m not sure I have much to say, it’s kinda enjoyable and I didn’t really care that it’s in English, I think this is better than the original version you sent me a few weeks ago actually. But it’s not something I’d listen to by myself.”
30. Finland (Windows95man – No Rules!)
(A: 36 – B: 21 – C: 26 – D: 31)
Juror B: “Look, I don’t care that the vocals are not great for this kind of performance. Yes that’s trashy but we need songs like these in the contest! It’s trash but it’s MY trashy moment. I like them, don’t be mad at me.”
Juror A: “I don’t know how to tell you how much I can’t stand this entry, sorry friends. Look, I know some of you three liked “Give that Wolf a Banana”, but I couldn’t stand this song and this one makes me cringe just as much. Seriously, I just can’t with songs that rely on the “haha funny” vibe and are just gimmicky without substance to it. I get it’s an okay song if you like that humour but that kind of peak hetero fratboy humour is not my cup of tea. If Iceland didn’t pick that song, this would be my dead last and one of my most disliked entry of the decade.”
29. Cyprus (Silia Kapsis – Liar)
(A: 33 – B: 34 – C: 23 – D: 23)
Juror D: “It’s cute and catchy, it’s giving summer, I like the dancing and I think this will be better with the performance but it’s not super memorable you know? And the “Liar Liar yeah yeah yeah” part is a bit annoying”.
Juror B: “I’m tired of these songs that try to go for the “SloMo” or “Fuego” vibe but that are just bad copycats. Nothing against the girl, she’s great, it’s just the song that’s boring to be honest.”
28. Australia (Electric Fields – One Milkali)
(A: 28 – B: 24 – C: 24 – D: 36)
Juror C: “It really feels like an embrace. It’s comfy and dreamy and I love the ethnic elements, even though I wish they used them a lot more. The message is great and it’s a well-written pop song but it’s somehow a little forgettable. I like listening to it, but it lacks replayability and memorability. But it’s still a good song, if it had more punch and drive, I’d rank it higher for sure. Maybe live?”
Juror D: “I’m not with you three, I just think it’s super boring and just feels like one of these bland and generic songs only made for ESC. I don’t think anything exciting with this one. I don’t tune in and watch Eurovision for songs like these. Skip.”
27. Poland (Luna – The Tower)
(A: 30 – B: 28 – C: 31 – D: 21)
Juror D: “I like this, it’s a fine track, and I love her looks. Honestly, she’s serving visuals (juror D was really adamant about the way she played chess in the video though) and I wish the song would match them more. It’s more appealing to watch than to listen to, but it’s still a good package and she has a cute voice. I don’t think I’ll add this to my playlist but I didn’t mind it. Is it better than Bejba though? (ETA; yes, they know about the whole drama, trust me, I traumatize these three with Eurovision more than I should).”
Juror C: “It’s… fine. Just fine. Not great. It’s not super catchy but it’s not completely unremarkable either. It’s just there. Not the worst, not the best. That’s how much I have to say about it.”
26. Georgia (Nutsa Buzaladze – Firefighter)
(A: 15 – B: 30 – C: 22 – D: 24)
Juror A: “This and Spain are by far my biggest growers this year honestly. I had her around you guys’ ranking at first but the more I listened to this song, the more I was into it. I honestly enjoy the song structure being more playful than the other pop songs we have this year, I’m glad it goes away from your usual verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus to take us somewhere else at every turn. And can we talk about these backing vocals that perfectly complement Nutsa? Can we talk about how amazing these strings are? Why the hell am I praising this song so much? And as we all agree, she is a fantastic singer. She just makes me believe anything she says, even though the lyrics are nothing to write home about let’s not kid ourselves. But here I am defending that one pop song and going on a rant.”
Juror B: “I wish I could share your enthusiasm because I love her voice and honestly, she does serve. I want to like it more because I love her, but I just find the song super impersonal and boring. I wish she had a song with more going on but it’s just a typical pop song in English. Sorryyyyy!”
25. Malta (Sarah Bonnici – Loop)
(A: 31 – B: 29 – C: 20 – D: 9)
Juror D: “I love this. It’s giving SloMo, not as iconic because SloMo was one of the best songs at Eurovision, but we need a song like this at Eurovision, and she is really good! I really enjoy the visuals, the choreo is going to stand out, she is charismatic and she’s giving everything that I wanted from a song like this. This is absolutely qualifying. The pop girly slaying the most!”
Juror A: “Yeah but it’s not SloMo, it’s SloNo (ETA; I had to just to see D gasp. It was worth it. Don’t hate me Malta fans!). No but I agree with you, Sarah is great and the choreo is on point. But where’s the song in this? It’s like a 3-minute-long dance routine that only serves to show off her moves. I’m not convinced but I can tell you, she is great live, she could qualify.”
24. Luxembourg (Tali – Fighter)
(A: 26 – B: 26 – C: 21 – D: 15)
Juror D: “It’s cute, I like that! It’s not groundbreaking but it’s a good pop song with a catchy chorus and she sings well. I like that it’s in French, it adds a little bit of personality. It’s a good return after being out of the contest for so long. She’ll probably qualify, right?” I then confirmed that this was closing the first semifinal
Juror B: “I don’t know, it’s just okay to me. At least it’s in French but when you are away for so long, I expect something better than this. It’s in French so that’s nice but it’s just there honestly.”
23. Denmark (Saba – Sand)
(A: 19 – B: 25 – C: 19 – D: 18)
Juror D: “I love her more than I like the song. She has one of my favourite voices so far. I just think the song is a little generic. But it’s catchy and at least you remember the “SAAAND” parts. But if you give this song to a worse performer, it wouldn’t hold its own at all. She makes it shine, not the opposite. You know… we could’ve had something better for her.”
Juror B: “I agree, I like her a lot but the song is very unremarkable. I just think the chorus is okay but I don’t see it qualifying unless she gives the best performance on the night.”
22. United Kingdom (Olly Alexander – Dizzy)
(A: 23 – B: 23 – C: 28 – D: 6)
Juror D: “I love Years & Years. You know, songs like “King”? This is in the same vein, and I couldn’t ask for more. It’s super catchy, I love the vibe the song has, I love his voice and Olly is gonna be even better live. This is the song that sounds the most like what I have in my playlist, and I’ll listen to it a lot. Thanks for that, it’s so good!”
Juror C: “I expected more, I guess. Right now it’s just an okay pop song without much going on, and it’s quite repetitive overall. There’s nothing baaaad with, obviously it’s very professional but it’s just kind of boring?”
21. San Marino (Megara – 11:11)
(A: 24 – B: 27 – C: 13 – D: 14)
Juror C: “Metal for Eurovision is usually kind of cringe, but I liked Germany last year and I like San Marino too. It’s nothing groundbreaking but the guitar work is fine, the bass is fine, the vocal delivery is good, the bridge is a good addition and it’s catchy. I’m okay with this.”
Juror B: “I find their vibe a little cringe and trying to hard to be funny to be honest. I don’t like the pink and black visuals and the vocals are not amaaaazing. It’s just okay but I expect more from metal songs. Meh.”
20. Moldova (Natalia Barbu – In the Middle)
(A: 22 – B: 20 – C: 16 – D: 20)
Juror C: “Look, it’s not a masterpiece but it’s really overhated (ETA; I told them it’s last in the overall scoreboard ranking). The chorus is nice, it’s a vibe and really pleasant, I really like the violins and she sing it well enough for what it is. It’s not a Eurovision winner but it’s a cool song. Just needs a little something more to be a great song, I guess. But I like this.”
Juror A: “I don’t have much else to add. It’s 22nd because it’s a strong year to me and there are a lot of songs I love, but this one is nice. I like the visuals in the live performance, I really think Natalia is a great singer and the violins and the drums are a great touch to the package. I agree it’s overhated amongst Eurofans, it’s just a little unimpressive and I fear it’s going to get lost.”
19. Lithuania (Silvester Belt – Luktelk)
(A: 18 – B: 6 – C: 34 – D: 12)
Juror C: “Yeah look, this is just bad in my opinion. I can’t stand these lifeless vocals, this guy has no conviction when he sings, it’s just so boring. Even the song is boring, it’s just a basic club song with an unremarkable hook. Next.”
Juror B: “I love it so much, it’s such a banger. I love that it’s in Lithuanian, I love how catchy it is, the verses go hard, the chorus is memorable, and his vocals are really good for the song. It’s such a vibe. I’m vibing hard! Goes right into my playlist” (she then proceeded to sing “Luktelk, Luktelk” a fair bit.)
18. Ireland (Bambie Thug – Doomsday Blue)
(A: 13 – B: 10 – C: 12 – D: 33)
Judge D: “It’s trying too hard to be edgy but it’s just common and frankly unimpressive. Like sure they try to be different, but they could do it well at least. It’s kinda boring and the chorus is very cliché.”
Judge C: “Look, I fully expected to cringe very hard at this because of the aesthetic, and I still don’t like their live aesthetic, but I really like this track. I love their play on dissonance, it’s something very bold for Eurovision. I’m a bit concerned about the heavy vocal effects on their voice. It works really well right there, but it could completely fall apart live and make it move down my rankings a lot if it’s not done the right way. I’m not 100% sold on the chorus either but I actually like this overall. It’s not your typical Eurovision song.”
17. Austria (Kaleen – We Will Rave)
(A: 21 – B: 17 – C: 15 – D: 11)
Judge A: “Look, I would enjoy it a lot more if the retro feel had more of an effect on me. But I never really cared about the type of music this song tries to make you feel nostalgic of, so I never fully get into it. Still, it’s a fun little song that is genuinely catchy and will work with great choreo. My main issue with the track is the length. The last third of the song feels like it’s almost forced to be there to fill up some space and drags it down, I’m not raving after 2 minutes and 15 seconds. If it was shorter, it would have been the perfect dose of fun and probably higher in my ranking. As it stands, 21st feels high enough.”
Judge D: “So, this is a serve. It’s giving Cascada, it’s giving 2000s techno, and I would have liked it even more in German. But this is probably the catchiest song this year, it’s super fun and it’s definitely gonna be giving on stage. I really like this.”
16. Norway (Gåte – Ulveham)
(A: 2 – B: 19 – C: 14 – D: 28)
Judge A: “To me, this is absolutely breath taking and would be an easy number 1 if it wasn’t for that one song I love even more. I was rooting so hard for this song to win MGP, you guys have no idea. I absolutely love the singing and the vocal technique, especially during the chorus where she hits HARD. The visuals are stunning, the guitar work is fantastic, and the Norwegian language is really beautiful to listen to. This is exactly the kind of song I want to see at Eurovision, and I wasn’t disappointed. I especially didn’t expect that from Norway since they’re usually not on top of my rankings. I love everything about this.”
Judge B: “So, I wish I could share your enthusiasm and like it as much as you do but the whole song is not really working for me. I like the chorus a lot and I like her a lot, but the verses are really flat and feel disconnected from the rest of the song. It builds up an atmosphere but then the verses put me out of it immediately. I’m frustrated because I should love it, it has rock, folk, native language, traditional singing but I’m not feeling it all too much because of the verses.”
15. France (Slimane – Mon Amour)
(A: 20 – B: 3 – C: 17 – D: 22)
Juror B: “I didn’t expect to like it. I really didn’t. But it’s so good and I actually cried listening to it. His voice is amazing and I just felt all the emotions he was singing about during the whole song. This is by far the best ballad and I hope it does really well with the juries. Why is France on a roll at Eurovision? La Zarra was iconic and this is amazing.”
Juror A: “I guess it’s my turn to be my country’s harshest critic as always. I really want to love this, and it did climb a little in my ranking, but it just feels like a vocal showcase to me. Like yes, great, Slimane is a solid singer, amazing, go us. But the instrumental is so stale and unimpressive and I’m not a fan of the lyrics either. I wish I could feel the song like you do, but right now I’m struggling to fully be on board. I just hope it does well because the interest in Eurovision in France is near 0.”
14. Netherlands (Joost Klein – Europapa)
(A: 17 – B: 8 – C: 25 – D: 10)
Juror C: “It’s trying too hard to be funny but it’s just not super interesting. Like it’s trying to be a meme or to be viral but it’s kinda cringe? It’s not the worst song, it’s kinda enjoyable at parts but I’m not buying it all too much, it’s just German hip hop at this point. Not sure why it’s so hyped but oh well.”
Juror D: “It’s just pure fun and it’s good musically. It could be anywhere between my 7th and 10th place but it’s 10th right now because for now, I vibe with the songs above a bit more. But I like that we have a native language, a throwback to the 90s and nice visuals. I really like the synth parts before the gabber a lot too. I guess if I wanted to nitpick, the chorus could go a bit harder but it’s really good!”
13. Czechia (Aiko – Pedestal)
(A: 16 – B: 16 – C: 7 – D: 19)
Juror C: “This is the catchiest chorus this year, I really like the teen rebellion energy. It’s not reinventing the wheel but it’s just a really solid rock track. Not sure I have much else to add but it’s well written and sung and hella catchy.”
Juror D: “I like the vibe, I like the lyrics and I like her energy but there’s just other songs I enjoy more than this one. But this is a good track, just not the best song this year.”
12. Spain (Nebulossa – Zorra)
(A: 14 – B: 18 – C: 6 – D: 17)
Juror C: “Look, they won me over with these synths. Seriously, I love the synths. Did I tell you about the synths? Oh yeah, the actual song is awesome and it’s just pure fun. Spain is doing great two years in a row.”
Juror A: “This and Georgia are the growers of the year. Is it an exceptional piece of music? Clearly not. Do I care about it? Clearly not either. This is just pure fun and I’ll just embrace it fully: yeah, my taste might be trashy with this one, but I’m very happy about it. I don’t care if it does well or not in the contest either, at least I’ve found a really great song for my playlist. Bonus point for the lyrics and the “I don’t give a damn” attitude.”
11. Portugal (Iolanda – Grito)
(A: 4 – B: 15 – C: 5 – D: 30)
Juror C: “I love this song. This is artistic without being pretentious and clearly not written just for Eurovision in mind. The acapella opening works perfectly, the addition of the guitar is subtly done and leads perfectly to the pre-chorus, and the chorus is really good with a pleasant minimalist tone. It’s really well written and composed and Iolanda’s voice is not doing too much or too little. Honestly, if this doesn’t qualify, this is a huge loss for Eurovision.”
Juror D: “It could be a grower but at this moment, I’m not feeling the song at all. It’s artsy, it’s a vibe but it’s also kind of boring and just… there. Like it’s probably well composed and all but I’m very indifferent to this song as a whole.”
10. Greece (Marina Satti – Zari)
(A: 3 – B: 9 – C: 37 – D: 3)
Juror C: “Seriously? This is just really bad Balkan music you can hear in any cheap club in Dalmatia. That’s like Greek turbofolk and no, it’s not a compliment. I have some recommendations of shitty Balkan music if you like this. I can’t stand this song, clear last place!”
Juror A: “I’ll go to any club in Split if I can hear this song being played anytime of the week! Seriously, I love everything about it. This is just true to Marina Satti’s sound (listen to her album guys) and vision, the tongue-in-cheek video has to be the absolute best this year, the sound is culturally rooted yet still feels extremely modern and dynamic, kinda like the music video, I just love the juxtaposition of the traditional imagery and the urban, fresh sounds Marina plays with. It’s giving “if Rosalía was from the Balkans” and that’s a huge compliment from me. I don’t care if this doesn’t qualify, I’ll keep vibing to this song every time it’s on. Would have been my winner in any other year.”
9. Belgium (Mustii – Before the Party’s Over)
(A: 12 – B: 5 – C: 9 – D: 25)
Juror D: “This is just cold and pretentious. Mustii is just overdoing it with his vocals. Good for you, you can sing but it doesn’t lead anywhere, and the song’s buildup is not the most interesting. I was a little bored for the whole song, I expected more from Belgium, but this is quite disappointed honestly. It’s a skip.”
Juror B: “This is such a mood; you really have to feel the song. I love the climax; everything is just perfectly done and gripping. Mustii’s voice is perfect for the track. I love the sad feeling, I love the dark atmosphere, the choir hits perfectly and the lyrics are a vibe. Belgium being in my top 5 for the second time in a row! Love it.”
8. Switzerland (Nemo – The Code)
(A: 10 – B: 7 – C: 27 – D: 5)
Juror C: “It’s like you go to science lab, add a bit of drum’n’bass, add a bit of rap, add a bit of symphonic and it’s just an incoherent messy track that does too much in 3 minutes and overworks itself. By far one of the most inconsistent songs this year that would need a good cleanup to be interesting without overdoing it. Not feeling the hype, nope.”
Juror B: “I really love the lyrics and I’m so glad we have another really good song with LGBTQ+ related themes. And the song is just an organized chaos, I love it very much. Their vocals are really impressive, and the chorus is really catchy. I’m not 100% into the rap part but that’s the only thing I’m not fully convinced by. I really enjoy the visuals and how they match the message of the song. It’s so good.”
7. Ukraine (Alyona Alyona & Jerry Heil – Teresa & Maria)
(A: 1 – B: 12 – C: 10 – D: 16)
Juror A: “It’s one of these songs where it’s not words I need to describe this song. It just struck a chord and never left me ever since. And it’s funny because the first time I listened to it, I wasn’t in love but I kept humming it, thinking about it again and again and with time and listens, it moved all the way up to the top. Again, it just speaks right to the heart and I can completely overlook the little details I could nitpick. Ukraine once again delivers.”
Juror B: “I really like this song but would love it even more if it wasn’t for the rap verse that doesn’t work to me. It clashes with the ethnic elements and if the rap wasn’t there, the song would rank even higher. I really like Jerry’s voice, I really like the lyrics and the Ukrainian language and even though the song feels like a long chorus or a build up to a chorus, it works very well here and I’m vibing with this song.”
6. Serbia (Teya Dora – Ramonda)
(A: 8 – B: 14 – C: 3 – D: 13)
Juror C: “Omg the synths… no I’m just kidding. It’s a really beautiful composition with a meaning and it has a touching and soothing quality. I’m not the usual fan of these Billie Eilish-like vocals as she mumbles a little, but the song is just that good it’s my third place.”
Juror D: “It’s a good song, very pretty and ethereal but it’s also a little bit flat. I followed PZE so I preferred Zorja or Breskvica as you know, but it’s still good and she sings it well. But I have songs I prefer over this one.”
5. Armenia (Ladaniva – Jako)
(A: 9 – B: 11 – C: 11 – D: 4)
Juror D: “This is what I watch Eurovision for. It’s fun, it’s cultural, it’s in native language and you can tell what country it is from! Also the singer is super charismatic and gorgeous and completely sells the song. I love this so much and this is going right into my playlist!”
Juror A: “Not much to add to that really, it’s only 9th for me because this year is so damn strong. I love everything about it, and it’s also close to my favourite music video as well, if it wasn’t for Greece and Estonia.”
4. Italy (Angelina Mango – La Noia)
(A: 7 – B: 13 – C: 8 – D: 2)
Juror D: “I’m obsessed with everything about this. I love the Italian language, it sounds so good. I love her so much, she’s a star and her voice is absolutely amazing. I also get young Ariana Grande vibes from her somehow. The music video is amazing, maybe my favourite one and the song is a pure banger. Like I’ll go on Spotify and put this on repeat all the time, it’s really iconic. I wouldn’t be mad if it won, that’d be deserved. Not surprised it won Sanremo.”
Juror B: “Yeah it’s a great song! I don’t like having it only 13th because I like it very much but this year is so strong. This is fun and makes you want to dance, and she is stunning honestly. It’s a really nice song, I like it!”
3. Slovenia (Raiven – Veronika)
(A: 11 – B: 4 – C: 4 – D: 8)
Juror B: “I love it so much and I love her so much. I like everything about it. It’s complex, it’s visually stunning, I love the lyrics, I love that she uses folklore and the message is great, and I love her vibe and her voice. I wish I could understand Slovenian better and not have to read the lyrics. It’s not catchy but it’s just a song you vibe with, you either get it or don’t. I want her to do so well at the contest. (ETA; I mentioned to her that Bojan from Joker Out was involved in the composition) My boys Joker Out are involved? That’s even better!”
Juror A: “This is switching between my 10th and my 11th constantly, but you said it all. It’s very committed in its artistry and Raiven clearly has a vision and will be very much faithful to her vision in Sweden. She never goes down the easy route and I love that about Veronika. I’m a bit scared the audience isn’t going to get it when they’ll first see it on stage and it might get lost. I really hope not.”
2. Estonia (5miinust & Puuluup - (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi)
(A: 5 – B: 2 – C: 1 – D: 7)
Juror C: “It's a frickin banger! The beat is awesome, the traditional instruments well incorporated, and that fucking dance.... I just love it. The best part is that the dudes clearly DON'T GIVE A FUCK and are having fun... from the hairstyles to the overlong title which nobody will remember - zero fucks given! It manages to be eclectic while being cohesive. And just damn fun.”
Juror A: “So in the ESC fandom, people dismiss songs with fun undertones sometimes with the term “joke entry” and I’ve seen it being applied to Estonia as well. Screw it, if it’s a joke entry, I’m fully on board with it. The production quality is excellent, the song packs a punch and serves a chorus that brings both modern and traditional, the talharpa perfectly complements the song and these dudes are just having fun and doing it in an impressively professional way. I want this in the finals.”
1. Croatia (Baby Lasagna – Rim Tim Tagi Dim)
(A: 6 – B: 1 – C: 2 – D: 1)
Juror C: “It's a high-octane industrial-rock song that's just brimming with energy through and through, and that' exactly what makes it catchy - from the beat to the chorus, everything's an earworm. Marko also doesn't run from his influences like Käärijä or Rammstein - he embraces them, so mad respect for honesty. All that is topped by some genuine and serious lyrics dealing with social issues - the experiences and fears of a boy leaving his home in search for a better life, which I believe is a very relatable topic for much of the audience. All around great song for me.”
Juror B: “This is so much the type of song I love, and I can’t believe we’re sending this to Eurovision. I love the lyrics so much, I love the energy, I love the hook, I love the vibe and I hope we have a great result with this song at Eurovision.”
So that’s it, that was the thoughts of my friend group about the Eurovision songs this year. Thanks for making it to the end! You might have had a lot of time to waste. I hope you had fun reading through THAT MASSIVE WALL OF TEXT, and congrats to Croatia for being the new “overall ranking winner of the people I harass way too much with Eurovision anyway”.

2024.04.17 21:57 samsungjello Ranking The Top 52 Eurovision Song Contest Countries since 1975: The -Ia's (#32-#28)

Under three weeks until Eurovision goes to Sweden for the 7th time, our countdown really starts to get to the meat and potatoes. We are now getting to the top half of the list, and with that we start to see more known ESC hits, which for me is very exciting! It has been a nice journey learning about the acts that have influenced each country at this contest, and may it continue into the top 30!

The Countries

Placement Country Score
28 Serbia 87081.981
29 Croatia 73990.339
30 Romania 73540.311
31 Bulgaria 71403.49
32 Armenia 69723.425
Sorry about the title, I meant to point to the fact that all of these countries end with -ia, and that they are all together results wise, which is pretty interesting. Just above Latvia (#33) is Armenia, who despite never winning, have steadily gotten results, as they have only NQ'ed 3 times in 15 attempts since they joined in 2006. Above Armenia is Bulgaria, who have quite the opposite results than Armenia, only qualifying 5 times since they debuted in 2005. But when they DO qualify, they have produced some of the best songs this contest has seen. Above Bulgaria (on this list and geographically) is neighbor Romania, who like their neighbor have left their mark on this competition, and even though they face financial difficulties today, at full strength they are a force to be reckoned with, with some top 3 placings to back it up. Inside the top 30 is Croatia, who don't have a top 3 in their history, but are only one of two countries here to host an ESC, and have one of my all time fav entries. They actually have only qualified 3 times in 11 years prior to this year's contest, but like with Bulgaria, cannot be counted out when they do qualify. And at the top here is the resident ESC winning country in Serbia***, whose history here is shorter than all the rest here, but have really impressed with their time, becoming a Eurovision darling with some of their entries and style.
** If you don't count the Croatian Yugoslav entries. ** Croatia hosted Yugoslavia's ESC in 1990.
*** Notice the gap between Serbia and the rest? Things will be REALLY serious soon.

The Worst Years

Romania 2023 Theodor Andrei - D.G.T. (Off and On)

Contest Ranking: DNQ (15th 2nd Semifinal) My Ranking: 36th (-1.9)
Yikes, what a disaster. Our first time talking about the most recent ESC, and it's because of Romania and their entry D.G.T (Off and On). But first, let's talk about the performer Theodor Andrei, who was able to turn this former duet of a song into one suitable to win the national final and compete in Eurovision. In some interviews, Andrei spoke out about how he wanted to send a song "never seen before" for Romania at ESC, as he wanted to mix several genres that both his countrymen and foreign listeners would enjoy. This man has the repertoire to pull it off, as he has a long history of acting and singing from an early age. Unfortunately, TVR (Romania's broadcaster), had different plans for Theo, as they not only rejected all of his ideas for staging, they also forced Theo to do a slower revamp of his song for Eurovision, as well as not give him any money for the staging at the contest. This contributed to a quite bizarre performance, one where he can be seen with a white... costume(?) flashing all over the screens. It's quite sad hearing about the troubles he had to deal with, because this song doesn't deserve to get ZERO points in his semifinal, joining the hall of "nil points" entries.

Bulgaria 2009 Krassimir Avramov - Illusion

Contest Ranking: DNQ (16th 1st Semifinal) My Ranking: 39th (0.627)
This one is a bit funny. After 4 years and only 1 qualification (finished 5th), Bulgaria would host a national final that had 14(!) events over the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009. At the end of all of the events, it would be a former pantomime, named Krassimir Avramov, that would represent the country in Moscow, quite controversially, I should add. It's funny that the offical ESC site says that Avramov has a "very rare and unique male voice", when so many people in Bulgaria took exception to his musical abilities when he won. They took SO much exception that there was a live debate on whether Krassimir should go to Eurovision or not! After all of that, Avramov and his "unique male voice" would preform his song in Moscow, and promptly exit after finishing third to last overall. I don't want to say the protestors were on to something, since I'm talking about this song in the Worst section, so I'm not going to, and I'll move on... ***
**Maybe they *were** onto something...

Croatia 2010 Feminnem - Lako je sve

Contest Ranking: DNQ (13th 2nd Semifinal) My Ranking: 33rd (1.553)
Now here's an act with some experience at ESC, with the girl group Feminnem representing Croatia in Eurovision with their song Lako je sve. They first competed in 2005 for Bosnia and Herzegovina, as both nationalities are represented in the group. That entry got 14th, a respectable finish, which lead to them trying to represent Croatia in 2007, to no avail. In 2009, they would try again to represent Croatia, but would fail again. It would only be in 2010 where the group would finally break through and get the chance to represent Croatia, a country whose performances were starting to slip as the 2000's were ending. With the chance to reverse their country's fortunes, they would... not qualify, kicking off a streak of 4 consequent NQ's. In fact, this entry would kickstart a bigger trend for the country, as mentioned earlier, they would only qualify 3 times in 11 years, and it all started with this song**.
** It should have started a year earlier, but Croatia's 2009 entry qualified through back up jurors despite finishing 13th in their semi.

Serbia 2013 Moje 3 - Ljubav je svuda (Љубав је свуда)

Contest Ranking: DNQ (11th 1st Semifinal) My Ranking: 29th (1.775)
Here we have another girl group making this list, this time it's Serbia with their 2013 entry. Serbia are quite efficient at winning this competition, as they have only failed to make the final 3 times like Armenia, so when they don't qualify, it's always a big shock. This group is made of a former ESC rep, as Nevena Božović was Serbia's Junior ESC participant in 2007. This group actually had to reunite, as before the competition the group broke up for their separate careers. And after this performance, they would break up again to resume said careers, due to the average age of this group was nineteen (19!). For a group that had an impressive individual resume, the only award they would receive that night would be a Barbara Dex award, and in the future another Serbian girl group would redeem Moje 3 with a storm...

Armenia 2011 Emmy - Boom Boom

Contest Ranking: DNQ (12th 1st Semifinal) My Ranking: 29th (1.799)
Of the three times Armenia didn't qualify to Grand Final, this one was the worst preforming of the bunch. For the contest in Germany, Armenia's broadcaster decided to internally select the performer this time, choosing what people consider one of the countries most popular singers in Emma Bejanyan, better known as Emmy. Emmy had a fast rise to stardom with her first song in the 90's, and she gained notoriety while touring with the all female quartet Hayer. The song she would sing is called "Boom Boom", which in theory would keep the Armenian "boom" in this contest, as they always made the Final prior to this year. In fact, they had never missed out on the top ten before this year, a feat in itself. Unfortunately, as Emmy came out onto the stage in a boxer's glove, this song would put a "boom" to Armenia's top ten and qualification streak, as this would be the nation's first non qualifier. Here's a fun fact: Armenia has only made the top 10 twice since this entry, so I guess this song was more of a "boom" than one would think... just not in a great way...

The Best Years

Croatia 1998 Danijela - Neka mi ne svane

Contest Ranking: 5th (131 pts) My Ranking: 5th (292.853)
For a country that technically has an ESC trophy (Yugoslavia 1989 was from Croatia), it is quite surprising to find that Croatia really haven't been able to replicate their 90's success. Their top three songs by (my) score are 1996 (197.392), 1999* (237.33), and this entry in 1998, "Neka mi ne svane", preformed by Danijela. We have ourselves a repeat performer! Danijela Martinović had her breakthrough in 1991, when she joined the band Magazin, who were a big band dating back to the Yugoslav days. In 1995, the band would represent Croatia's 3rd ever ESC entry, with the song "Nostalgija", which got the country their first top 10. One year later Danijela would leave the band to pursue her solo career, which lead her to win the Dora festival, which got her a ticket to the big dance in Birmingham for ESC '98!
I didn't know which song this was, but when I saw the black cloak over Danijela, I was like "Oh, it's THAT one." This song fits under the umbrella of the Balkan ballad, which for me always hit more than they miss. This one hits for me (shock)! I think that the quiet buildup at the beginning really pulls the viewer in, as it is only her voice that can be heard at the start. Then as the music swells and she hits the chorus, which feels like a nice reward for the viewer being invested for the beginning. I think the most iconic part of her preformance though was the costume change, as she discards her black robe for a clean white dress, which probably represents her moving on from her lover. Oh, I forgot to say this before, but this song is a love ballad (also shock). It's very interesting that Croatia sent in female ballads in their early days of ESC, and it's also very interesting that in back to back years, they would have two women in white dresses singing dramatic ballads**. It's also very intriguing that they would finish in similar positions, with less than 15 points separating them. Both of those songs represent a blooming time for Croatia, a time that they have struggled to get back to since, but maybe this year they can start to change that.

Armenia 2008 Sirusho - Qélé, Qélé (Քելե, Քելե)

Contest Ranking: 4th (199 pts) My Ranking: 5th (300.409)
Armenia certainly came on to the ESC stage with some force! With their first five entries placing in the top ten, they already had a formula that translated very well. Of the first five, this was the one that placed the highest, finishing 4th, one of two times Armenia would enter the top five in their ESC history. What would be that entry? Probably one of the few highlights from an otherwise dull year in "Qélé, Qélé", preformed by Sirusho, also known as Siranush Harutyunyan, an Armenian born singer who, surprise surprise, blossomed onto the field when she was only nine! She already had awards for a Best Album, and for Best Female Performer, and was regarded as an Armenian icon when she was selected by AMPTV to represent the country in Moscow for Eurovision '09. The song she would sing was the overwhelming choice by the Armenian public, called "Qélé, Qélé", written by Siranush herself alongside Canadian producer Harout Arthur Der-Hovagimian.
Like I said earlier, 2008 was not the best year for Eurovision. The joke entries were at an all time high and not many songs from that year were memorable, even the winning song. But this song is not one of them! In fact I would say this song is one of the bright spots of Belgrade 2008, as it is very catchy and upbeat in its tone. I cannot help myself but to occasionally hum the chorus every once in a while, because it is one that really grows on you, and in a fun way as well! The energy of Siranush carries this song a long way, as she really belts out some of the lyrics. It also helps that she actually does what she says in the song, which is "Come qele, move qele". The whole choreography of the performance is very well done too, which is very important since there is not much in the background to occupy our eyes. I think what I'm trying to say is that this song is very well done, and it would have been a crime if it didn't finish in the top five! Despite the fact that according to my formula Armenia 2014 finished higher (4th), the points advantage ***just* goes to 2008 (by 3 points btw), and while I do like that entry, I think this one deserves its top spot at the top of the Armenian totem pole.
** Russia 2008 was a song that I did not like that much for a LONG time. So much so that I would agree that block voting was the only reason it won! Now today I don't think that, and the song has annoyingly grown on me, to a point where I wouldn't even call it a weak winner (barely).

Romania 2017 Ilinca feat. Alex Florea - Yodel It!

Contest Ranking: 7th (282 pts) My Ranking: 5th (431.229*)
Years that end in 7 were very good for three of these countries. This is the first of the "20X7" babies with Romania topping their 2010 entry** with "Yodel It!", probably one of the most... unique songs I've heard at Eurovision, and that is saying a LOT. Meet Ilinca, aka Maria Ilinca Băcilă, who is a professional singer and... yodeler. I only pause there because it's rare to see yodelers on the professional stage. In fact, she's the only yodeler in Romania! But anyway, Illinca started singing when she was only 7, and in her early teenage years participated in The X Factor and The Voice. She also has done some opera, which makes sense considering the yodeling is not that far from opera, now that I think about it. Maria would be joined on the stage by rapper and singer Alex Florea, who has also competed in The X Factor when he was younger. Apparently he is also an actor, which is also neat, I think.
Knowing that one of the singers is a professional yodeler is one thing, but hearing it for the first time is another. This song seems a bit generic at the start, but that goes out the window when Maria starts yodeling... and it was at that point where this song would enter the ESC hall of randomness. You know, those entries that make you go "huh?" or laugh due to the nature of it. If you need any visual reminders, here's this(same year lol),this, this, this, and especially this (Oh man 2008 was more rough than I thought). But this one joins it for good reasons! The message of the song is quite simple, but with Maria's yodeling throughout the duration, I don't think that it was the focus anyways. The yodeling itself is quite impressive, but you expect nothing less from a trained opera/yodeler. In fact, I'm pretty sure that it was the reason this entry landed so high in the standings at the end of the night. Is it Romania's best placing, no, that would go to 2010 and 2005. Is it their most iconic? Well that comes to preference, for me that would go to 2010 (barely). But this is certainly a highlight for a country that has produced a surprising amount of.
** Another one of those ones that grow on you the more you see it! "You and me, can't you see we're playing with fire..."

Serbia 2007 Marija Šerifović - Molitva (Молитва)

Contest Ranking: 1st (268 pts) My Ranking: 1st (536.023**)
For Serbia, their ESC time has been relatively short and also really long compared to the other countries here. Of course they were part of Yugoslavia, but when the country broke down in the 90's, Yugoslavia eventually became Serbia and Montenegro and took part in two contests in the early 2000's. But when Montenegro broke away from the country in 2006, Serbia and Montenegro became... Serbia and Montenegro, but now they are two separate countries instead of one! The first time Serbia would represent themselves as a single country for the first time in 2007 in Helsinki, and they came in with a bang! Meet Marija Šerifović, born in the 4th largest city in Serbia, she made her recording debut when she preformed with her mother n TV in 1998. She grinded out two albums in the early 2000's, and in 2007 she would compete in Beovizija which was the national final for Serbia, in which she would win and travel to Finland for ESC 2007.
Even though non-English music is starting to really flourish now in ESC, it was a completely different picture in the 2000's, which was a product of the language rules and the juries/public shifting preference towards English songs. Since 1988, when Switzerland won for the second and at this point most recent time, 5/18 of the winners prior to 2007 sung in English or mostly English, including the last 8 contests, the longest such streak in ESC history until after 2007 to 2016, which was 9 straight English songs. So really since 2000 and up until 2017, there was ONE non English ESC winning song, which for me is quite remarkable. The only way a non English song could win in these times is that the feeling of the song would have to transcend language. And that is what this song does to a tee. Just like with "Lane moje", "Molitva" is a song that you can really feel the emotion of, no matter that one cannot understand the language. The passion in which Marija and the Beauty Queens sing their parts is nothing short of amazing. And since there isn't much in the staging with the performance, the audience can just focus on the powerful voices on display. There's no gimmicks, unless you count the moment when the singers hold hands, revealing a heart from the paint on their hands, just a well composed song sung beautifully. This entry deserved to win, despite the fierce competition that went on right after this song **, and it's quite remarkable that this year is the connecting tissue to make sure there wasn't a near 20 year gap between non-English songs winning at this contest, which probably helped this contest in ways we don't understand. Even though they haven't got back to the mountaintop since then, it is quite amazing that Serbia pulled *this** off on their first try as an independent nation.
** This song is one of the Top 50 ESC songs since 1975.
*** I guess I can talk about it now, but to keep it brief, the more serious song, when done right to its abilities, will always trump the more silly goofy song at ESC in terms of voting, but both are needed at Eurovision due to the utility each adds.
*** And also because why not, Serbia 2022 is ranked 64th of all songs since 1975 ; Serbia 2012 is ranked 86th of all songs since 1975

Bulgaria 2017 Kristian Kostov - Beautiful Mess

Contest Ranking: 2nd (615 pts) My Ranking: 2nd (687.011**)
Up until 2017, Bulgaria had only qualified to the Grand Final twice, with both of those entries finishing in the top five. Talk about all or nothing! That is exactly the case with probably one of my favorite ESC songs ever, "Beautiful Mess" by Kristian Kostov. We finally have a non native person representing another country, as Kristian was born in Russia to a Bulgarian father and a Kazakh mother, with the latter being from a region bordering Kazakhstan. Kristian got a boost of fame from being on The Voice Kids Russia, where he was mentored by former ESC winner Dima Bilan. He would then go on to be in *The X Factor in Bulgaria, where he would finish as a runner up, but that was all that was needed to be signed to a record label, Virginia Records, release his debut single which would top the national airwaves, and release another single which would hit number one for over 3 months! So at only 17(!), he would get the chance to sing for Bulgaria in Kyiv, with his song "Beautiful Mess".
This song is an all time classic. It's one of those songs that would win easily in almost any other year, and it really comes down to how this song was produced and preformed (duh). The instrumental is probably the most underrated part of this song, setting the scene for a performance that feels emotional. When Kristian takes a break from singing, all of the horns (I think) flare up and it's so beautiful and great and wonderful and all of the other positive adjectives. The build up is great, the song feels like a ball of energy that releases after the first chorus, rebuilds, and then releases again in a ball of fire that engulfs everyone and everything, and it's so amazing. I haven't even talked about Kostov's voice, it's just magical. The range that he has, at only 17(!!) is incredible, and he is the bow on top of an sublime gift of an entry. I actually heard recently that the placing of the song was quite a letdown for Bulgaria, as many thought it would win. Apparently Kristian had a lot of pressure to win this competition, but Eurovision is not that straightforward. Even with that, this song probably WOULD have won if it wasn't for probably a once in a million (more like 1/49) song that managed to unite the juries AND the public, something that hasn't been replicated in this voting era. If this song came in 2016, it would have won*, if it came in 2018, it would have won, if it came in 2019, it would have won*. I feel like this song can stack up to MANY Eurovision winners, and in many of those cases it would come out on top****. Anyways, I don't think Kostov should be disappointed with this result, considering that it IS one of the Top 50 highest ranked songs of all time, and it is easily Bulgaria's best preforming entry ever. (It's incredible that a country could qualify so little times, but have bangers nearly every time it qualified!)
** This song is one of the Top 50 ESC songs since 1975.
*** Wow another reference to Russia 2008, one more and I get a free donut!
**** It would have been close, Australia, Russia and Ukraine with this Bulgarian song would have been an INCREDIBLE battle to watch that year.
***** I only say that because of 2007, where the more joking entry (Ukraine), finished second to the more emotional serious song (Serbia)
****** Easily. Arcade (Netherlands) didn't win ANY of the juries or the public's vote. And while I like Norway and North Macedonia that year, I think this one would have pulled it off. I do agree that it may be a bit closer.
******* Last one I promise. For any year prior to 2007, the eras are too different to compare. I think this song would beat 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2013(?).

Final Thoughts

So another five down, getting ever so closer to the top 10 ESC nations! Do you think that Bulgaria should have won in 2017? (I think not just because of Portugal) Do you think "Molitva" deserved to win over Ukraine that year? (Also yes but I'm glad both songs are remembered, though one song is remembered a LOT more than the other one) Do you think that Croatia will get their own ESC trophy someday? (Heart says yes, but then I look at their recent history)

2024.04.13 04:58 NailyNailed Does anyone have any of ManekiNekoTea's old BFDI/OSC art downloaded?

Does anyone have any of ManekiNekoTea's old BFDI/OSC art downloaded?
Before I start this, for anyone who doesn't know who she is, here's a link to one of my previous posts about her and the prequel to this post: https://www.reddit.com/BattleForDreamIsland/comments/1bw7cak/attempting_to_find_more_of_manekinekoteas_old/
I'm still on my task to recover her old art, and so far it isn't going too well. I've only managed to find a little bit, which either came from a discord server I'm in, the BFDI wiki, and another Instagram account that posted many of her issues that others noticed. For curiosity, here is my archive right now: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dBRZmRF_VnVrsOB7JS9KWgHK3Ha9d1oT
I've tried 2 of the 3 methods to hopefully recover her art, but they don't seem to be effective enough:
1 - Using Google or other search engines
While I haven't experimented with this completely yet, I've been using Google and Bing to try and find any other old pieces of her art that hasn't been added yet. Apparently it is harder than I thought, as 99% of the art I've found so far either comes from Amnio, DeviantArt users that have reuploaded bits of her art (Most likely from said archive), or her still existing reddit posts on this subreddit. The same appears to be happening with Bing. Even reverse-image searching doesn't help. I haven't tried searching for “manekinekotea bfdi” on Google yet, but I have a feeling it also won't help very much.
2 - Using Wayback Machine or other webpage archives
The next thing I tried was using Wayback Machine to find an archive of her old Instagram account. And I can say this only half-worked. There is only one link that works, and that is saved on November 3, 2020. Since this technically only half-works, it links to her old Insta as of 11/03/2020, but it's pretty goofy and you can't really view the art that appears, though you can get a good idea on what her account looked like back then. Here's a link to it: https://web.archive.org/web/20201103101749/https://www.instagram.com/manekinekotea/
Other web archives didn't work due to no one actually archiving her old account back then, so that's out of the window.
This means I'm now down to the last option:
3 - Asking other OSC Users if they have any of her old art
Since none of the other options worked, this is the only option that remains. The issue is - most people here may not know about her since it's been several years since she initially left at first, and many have joined after that so it makes it more difficult to tell who has any of her old art or not. Even if there is someone who does, there‘ll probably be a good chance a lot of the art sent will be art already found in the archive. I have no choice but to attempt this and hope for the best, as it is the main title of this post.
Yeah, I know I'm talking about someone who was once a bit of an issue in the OSC, but her old art will always be a special place in my heart since many my art is inspired from hers. And apologies for talking about her frequently...
What I know about her old art and any fragments that I have left
Luckily I do know what some of her art looked like back then as I discussed previously, but I'll repost it again here of all the old art that I can remember:
  • Neki once did an "Objectober" and "Christmas BFDI Countdown" challenge in late 2020 on Instagram, most of which featured her BFB Kids. Some of them are in the archive, but most are still not added yet.
  • A post with the caption "Getting into Black Hole and Puffball's nerves." that featured the adult versions of her BFB Kids, mainly about the Puff Hole ship.
  • An ship art featuring her BFBK Bottle and Tree, with Bottle looking at a butterfly while Tree is embarrassed.
  • Another "comic" post where she made an alternate version of the TPOT 1 Challenge where PB tries to save BH from losing the contest (Again about the Puff Hole ship).
  • A redraw of TPOT 1 featuring her BFBK Naily and Price Tag.
  • A post featuring 3 different scenarios involving the issues with BFBK Pen, TB and Book's younger siblings.
  • A Valentine's Day art featuring the Puff Hole ship (Again with the adult versions of the BFBK BH/PB).
  • A series of posts that feature a BFB 29-like scenario where the art style deteriorates with each post before coming back to normal.
Also, I remembered that I also have fragments of her old art in my photos that are cropped images of her old art, so here are all of the unique ones that I found that aren't art found in the archive:
Bubble feeling like she's ready to take on Woody for a reason.
What looks like a test drawing of Basketball, came from a post where she was updating her artstyle.
A cropped version of that one art where Pen, Blocky Snowball and Eraser (Pictured) are taking a picture, while the latter is unamused.
A drawing of Blocky, from an art with him and Woody.
Coiny from this one Coinpin art, I think.
Gelatin.
Fanny from this post featuring her, Bubble and possibly Snowball?
Golf Ball from one of the Objectober posts. I think it was Day 7 where she's looking at Puffball with her speaker box. Yeah, I know that some people are still scowling over how Neki messed with her personality as a child, but to me, I think it's to probably reference that flashback in IDFB 1.
Snowball from this post featuring him and Ice Cube.
A gothic styled Dora along with her soon-to-come teamates in another Objectober post, most likely Day 5.
Taco from most likely Day 6 of her Objectober posting. She accidently knocked over Blocky's tower here.
Saw from probably Day 8 of her Objectober posting, with her iconic drink!
Woody saying \"Problem?\" in one of her fanarts, probably just a test drawing of him. Again, this is how SHE pictured Woody when he was a child, so I do get why there are quite a lot of users who think she \"OOC-ed\" him.
There's another fragment that I have, but I won't post it here due to possible creepy imagery. What I can tell you that it features Teardrop from Day 1 of her Objectober posting.
There's two more that I can show that is rough screenshots of her art, but won't be added to the archive due to only being rough screenshots - They were actually taken from someone else who was spreading the awareness of the whole problematic Neki ordeal:

This is the post that said \"Getting into Black Hole and Puffball's nerves.\". It is one of the posts I'm very looking for ATM, so if anyone has the art downloaded, feel free to send it to me.
And this one is the Tree x Bottle ship art that I was talking about as well. Yeah, I know some of you are gonna say \"WHY IS TREE BEING WHITEWASHED HERE?\", don't get me started on the Neki POC incident that happened back in 2021...
So that's all the fragments that I have. This'll be a good reminder of what her art looked like back then, and also what the other art still not in the archive looks like.
I've done talking here, so now it's time to get back to the main title of this post and the 3rd method I'll try, asking if you guys have any of her old art downloaded. This is probably not 100% guaranteed to work since I might get a bunch of people who can't due to not saving her art back then, but it's for the best. By the way, If anyone can experiment with method 1 (Searching with Google, Bing, ect.) a bit more, let me know if you find any new art when you search for “manekinekotea bfdi”. Hopefully a bunch of new art arrives...

2024.04.08 14:10 lkc159 My Top 37 this year, pre-preparties

I think I've given my Top 37 enough time to settle down, and I just wanna share how I feel about the songs for this year! At this stage I rank songs based on their lyrics (subject matter, how well the lyrics flow, are they evocative, etc), the composition (melody and bass lines, coherence, development, etc), and how much I vibe with it - so no live vocals yet. I'm also using the Official Eurovision Version songs, so things like Mon Amour's instrumental change don't count.
Why should you care? Well, there's no reason for you to, and my opinion's certainly not better than yours. I'm just so excited about this year and I wanna share shrugs
Disclaimer: I am not a music professional, and this is a PERSONAL ranking. I'm generally into pop and rock entries, so I might be a little biased against other entries, but I hope I can do justice to most or all of them! That said, I definitely have no problem changing my rankings if I find out or realize new things about songs I didn't previously notice.
37: Iceland - Scared of Heights 4.35/10
I'm sure Hera's a lovely person. But this song... I'm sorry, this song is just... I'm not even sure where to begin. I find the lyrics banal and not particularly imaginative or evocative. The subject matter is kind of trite and has been done a million times. The music doesn't quite go anywhere, and if I cut the song off after the first chorus, I don't think I'd have missed anything. The most I can say about this is that Hera's a pretty good vocalist - but I'm not putting vocals into the ranking yet, and even if I did I don't think it'd get off the ground (Which, to Hera, should actually be quite comforting, given her acrophobia.)
36: Cyprus - Liar 4.6/10
... I absolutely HATE the filler lyrics in this song. "feeling like ooh la la", "found out the truth la la"; to me it feels like that's completely useless padding for lines they couldn't find enough material for, which is a microcosm of this song as a whole. The instrumentation with its overuse of brass really gets on my nerves too - it's basically Eurovision's version of this. Certain lines in the lyrics feel... oddly short, especially the very last chorus - the final "Cause you're a LIAR" sounds extremely truncated and needs something else to balance it out. I KINDA vibe with this song - it's not terrible - but I also dislike so much about it. In all honesty, I think I hate that I don't hate it.
35: Albania - Titan 4.9/10
The revamp made this worse, and not just because I can't pretend to hear "I get divorced, I get the Steven in my phone" in the chorus anymore. A lot of the phrasing in this song sounds horrendously awkward to me because it doesn't follow conventional English stress patterns ("I'll never break" with the emphasis on "break" instead of "ne"; similarly with "Fight till the end", and then there's "Like a Titan, I'll be, brave" - the pause between "be" and "brave" just doesn't fit). And previously, at least there was some semblance of cohesion, of identity in the song. But the new one... I'm not generally a fan of revamps to English, and this is not an exception. I also feel like the last upbeat, double tempo part of the song just doesn't fit the song in its entirety. It's like the song is having an identity crisis and doesn't quite know what or where it wants to be anymore.
34: Malta - Loop 4.95/10
Another one for which the revamp made it worse. The "oh my god" sounds utterly vapid and bimbotic, and the new "Loop" just doesn't work for me - hearing it looping over and over again makes it even more glaring. Other than that, this just screams generic girlbop, with generic lyrics, with nothing special musically, and which is neither interesting nor particularly well done.
33: Latvia - Hollow 5.05/10
I'm a fan of the story in the song, I think it has a reasonably important message, and it's reasonably competent. That said, it's boring, the hook doesn't hook, and I can't vibe with it. So yeah, if I were forced to listen to it on repeat (or on Loo-oo-oo-oo -op), it would definitely be "killing me slow".
(Irrelevant, but Dons' face vaguely reminds me of Voldemort lmao)
32: Moldova - In The Middle 5.45/10
A song that I think, on paper, should be far stronger than how I've ranked it. I love the lyrics - "I want you to be happy, all of your life; my beautiful angel, my work of art" just speaks to me as a parent of a 18 month old toddler. But I think the melody line isn't really something that's comfortable to my ears, I'm not sure if the music fits the story the song is trying to tell, and I don't know if I'm a fan of the vocalization in the chorus/post-chorus. My brain likes it one day and hates it another. Honestly, though, I COULD see this moving higher once I've... I don't know. Assimilated it into my consciousness more, I suppose. I just can't really vibe with it at the moment. (Plus, the lyrics, though lovely, don't really flow well.)
31: Denmark - SAND (SAA-AA-AAND) 5.5/10
Same as Latvia - reasonably competent, but neither lyrically nor musically interesting to me - especially since holding sand in your hands really isn't all that hard (try holding water instead). I vibe with it a little more than Latvia or Moldova's, though.
30: Sweden - Unforgettable 5.6/10
The lyrics are meh - "Un-for-get-ta-ble" feels very shoehorned/ungainly and unnatural, and while the girl M&M are singing about might be unforgettable to them, they certainly don't make her sound any different from all the other man/womaneaters we've heard about in songs - unlike, say, Jezebel from 2022 (although that was all the way on the other end, in the "wtf" section of the scale). The song itself is also very meh, and I think the duo singing in unison rather than harmonizing is... not a great choice. It's a competently produced pop song. That's it. There's no emotional outreach behind this. There's no soul behind this Dance You Off v2.0.
29: Greece - Zari 6.15/10
I'm not really sure how to rank this one. To my ears, the spoken sections and the sung sections don't really sound like they mesh well together. That said, the hook is not bad. From what I've heard from other people who love it, I think I just don't have the cultural context to truly understand what's going on musically?
28: Azerbaijan - Özünlə Apar 6.15/10
I love how slow and measured it is. It's a very chill piece, and I love the strings in the background. The octave-higher jump in the postchorus is pretty nice, too. That said, it doesn't really stand out all that much compared to some of the other songs this year. It's good. That's all.
27: Serbia - Ramonda 6.3/10
I love how the music builds up behind the 2nd bridge and leaves the start of the chorus floating atop the wind on its one single line, before it all comes crashing back in. It's a very well-done contrast that's stuck in my head. That said, that one single line ("Lila ramonda?") gets too repetitive, and the whole song sounds like it could do with a little more development. As it is, it feels like the tempo's too slow and the ideas don't show enough development to really make the whole 3 minutes worth it.
26: Luxembourg - Fighter 6.3/10
I vibe with this, but it's also part of another not-so-great revamp, which added an unnecessary slowdown section. It might be necessary for Tali to get her breath back in order to sing the song, but story/songwise it serves no purpose. Also, the slower "et Voila" at the end is a complete mood killer. It's a pity, because I actually like a lot about the song, especially its "I'm in a new phase of life and I don't know what I'm supposed to do, I'll keep fighting but I need some guidance" message. The "Qui me dit tout bas", line is also a bit of a eargasm. Overall, it's not bad - just not great.
25: Poland - The Tower 6.3/10
Really not a fan of the post-chorus. I personally feel it adds nothing to the song. This is one of those songs I actually vibe with, but while I like the lyrics in the verse/bridge, the chorus and post-chorus is drastically weaker. Also, as a chess player, I cannot get past this point in the music video where she's White but moves second (Queen on left of King = White) and plays N-fucking-f5 as her first move. THE KNIGHT DOES NOT MOVE THAT WAY.
24: Germany - Always On The Run 6.35/10
"I am nothing but the average, even though I'm special to some."
23: Australia - One Milkali (One Blood) 6.45/10
I love the instrumentation. I love the subject matter. The melody lines are great. But the lyrics feel a bit... I don't know. There are a few lines I'm tickled by (the "...descend to the centre..." avalanche for example), but the various references to random things feel very strange. It's like the lyrics have ADD even as it brags about having open sex one night (yes, yes I know it's the golden ratio 0.618, it's a stupid joke I'm making, don't kill me)
22: Ireland - Doomsday Blue 6.55/10
I'm totally not a fan of this genre. But Bambie has... well, not won me over, exactly, but the spin they've put on it is interesting enough to take this up into the middle 3rd. I especially love how, despite the complete 180 genre change, the song as a whole still feels very coherent. Plus the way the song moves along feels very natural and graceful. If you tore the song apart and I heard the different genre-d bits separately I'd like to think I could still tell they belonged to the same song, and I think that's great.
21: UK - Dizzy 7/10
On the whole, a reasonably good song! It starts strong, and I love the spoken bit. Someone pointed out that the chord progression in the chorus is what's known as a Circle of 5ths, which also fits the spinning/"Dizzy" theme. I'm just a bit sad with what feels like the lack of development in musical ideas in the 2nd half - the last 2 choruses are pretty much copy and pasted, and I'm not a fan of that repeated downwards resolution in the melody line ("story never ends"). They did resolve a phrase upwards ("make me dii zzy") in the final chorus, but putting it there instead of somewhere like the last "again", which slowly arpeggiates upwards, makes it feel pretty underwhelming.
20: Israel - Hurricane 7/10
The way the lyrics are phrased (3-2-3 beats) in the verses caught my attention in a good way. The chorus also just flows very well, despite its slightly extended 6 lyrical lines rather than 4 or 8. It's a nice song. That's about it.
19: Armenia - Jako 7.05/10
This song is ADORABLE. I love the ethnic components to it, I love the 12/8 time signature, I love how they play around with the tempo and phrasing to break up what my ears are expecting, and I love the call-and-response section in the middle. That said, I do think the song went for "VIBES!" and the lyrics are a little light as a result, without too much development. I guess as a story of a young lady defying expectations, perhaps this might be a form of commentary in itself, but then I compare this to Zorra and this... needs a little more.
18: Estonia - (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi 7.1/10
Very fun party song. We don't need drugs to have fun and we're too poor for them anyway! shifty eyes And this song is a vibe, even if the melody isn't entirely my cup of tea (Talharping intensifies). I can really see this going the way of Trenulețul - massive televote score.
Also that dance move is fire. It's as simple as Gabbani's but so much stronger. I want to do it so bad whenever this song comes on.
17: Czechia - Pedestal 7.2/10
Awesome subject matter, well presented. That revamp was sorely needed - the old version seemed like it was going nowhere fast, but this new one manages to ramp up the tension nicely, balancing it against the lyrically less heavy section, and breaks the tension well, too - though I'm not a fan of the random chihuahua yips. I really, really hope that Aiko can pull this off vocally on stage.
16: Austria - We Will Rave 7.3/10
Another good party song that I totally vibe with, though again, it's very lyrically light. The verse lyrics when put to the melody, especially, don't seem to flow all that well, and the pre-chorus ("So I go, go, go, where them brokenhearted go"), which is the best part of the song imo, doesn't last long enough.
15: Georgia - Firefighter 7.45/10
Pretty good. I love how Nutsa manages to make the song feel like it's continually ramping up. I love how putting out the fire mythologically follows from the phoenix burning up in order to be reborn. I especially like the pre-chorus, which really hits hard with its imagery ("The ceiling is falling, the windows are burning, it's getting harder to breathe"), and the instrumentation really helps bring the atmosphere to life. It ends on a high note outro, which I think is a nice contrast to many songs which simply follow the tried and tested "chorus bridge chorus" pattern.
14: Lithuania - Luktelk 7.45/10
The song develops very nicely. There are clear sections that are well-joined together, and even though the song is melodically simple, IMO the instrumentation complements it really well. That drum also just really works. The lyrics are great, too - the transition from "I no longer want to dance, but I need to dance" in the bridge to the chorus' "Am I still alive? Do you still recognize me?" just smacks of a desperation to keep clinging on, to keep holding on that just gets me. Song's an absolute vibe.
13: Switzerland - The Code 7.5/10
I like it. I love the classical inspirations (Queen of the Night and Habanera), the message is a very important one that speaks to me (finding the kingdom you belong to between the 0's and 1's really does help you find that sense of belonging and helps you realize who you are). The musical complexity in this is wonderful. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of the "like ammonites, I just gave it some time" line (what do they wanna do, become a fossil?), and I don't really vibe with the hook ("I broke the code") :/. That said, I do think it's a pretty strong song!
12: San Marino - 11:11 7.5/10
Many seem to not really like this, and some of them are people whose opinions I respect and usually agree with (my favourite Eurovision Youtuber called it "atrocious" and said she "can't find anything [she] liked about this" lmao), so I really am not sure if there's something I'm missing here. Personally I find the guitar section really fits and contrasts nicely with the the rest of the song, it develops nicely, and the ME LA PELA line is really great to follow along with. IMO there's a sense of soul in this song, of knowing what it wants, of having its own identity and not caring about public opinion rather than just being another mass-produced pop hit. It's also something that's feels quite different from most other things we have this year. I'm not sure about the song lyrically, and overall it does feel a little chaotic, but I do quite like it.
(Side note: I keep hearing "we love rock" as "we love frogs" and it's hilarious)
(Side side note: Yes I know it isn't 11th but things just didn't work out that way!)
11: France - Mon Amour 7.5/10
This song was at the top of my list for pretty long, but after all songs came out and I kept listening to them, it's kind of started to fall. Lyrically, it's not that special. Melodically, I like it a lot; compositionally, it's fine, although the musical accompaniment straddles the line between minimalist and simplistic. I know the whole purpose of it is to let Slimane's voice shine through, but at the same time it kinda feels a little too low effort. I noticed that the versions I've heard in the preparties, or the Dora final, definitely did give a little more to that, so it's almost certainly not going to be lacklustre eventually, which bodes well. On the whole, it's a good package, and I see it being elevated even further by Slimane's vocal prowess.
10: Finland - No Rules 7.6/10
I've seen many call this a joke song, but IMO it absolutely isn't. It does carry a little bit of an indulgent wish-fulfilment mentality to it, but who hasn't had at least one moment in their lives where they wish they could just do whatever the hell they wanted, social norms and conventions be damned?
Some of the lyrics are kinda cringey - "I am the King, I am the Queen" is definitely a major source of secondhand embarrassment - but still, right now, this song is probably tied with Nendest for "songs I vibe hardest to" this year.
9: Netherlands - Europapa 7.75/10
This took some time to grow on me - it started out near the bottom of my list, but it's shot all the way up now. I love how Joost has basically buried his emotional upheaval within the quirky uptempo music of the song, as well as the gradual shift in the lyrics as it all comes undone - it all sounds pretty great for him at the beginning, but you can trace his mental state through the first hint of cracking ("I lost everything except time") in the first verse, and then the 2nd verse starts fully laying out his pain. I can only imagine how cathartic a song like this must be for him. It's brilliant.
8: Norway - Ulveham 7.9/10
Fun, original, strong. The story is interesting, the instrumentation fits and is beautiful, and I love how the chorus is basically just vocalization of released tension. The musical backing is also really strong with this one, and there's so much going on in there that just really adds to the atmosphere really, really well. I do think the ending section is a little too long, through. But all in all, I don't think I really have a way to say why I love this, except that I do.
7: Belgium - Before The Party's Over 7.95/10
It starts well and then only gets more intense. I love the switch that's made in the beginning and ending choruses (The "Before the Party is Over" sung in the background initially, and then being belted(?) at the end), and whenever you think "surely they can't add any more?" the instrumentation just keeps delivering, and delivering, and taking it up further and further and further. Lyrics are ok, and musically, this piece has so much in its favour. I think musically speaking, this is my #1 of this year.
6: Ukraine - Teresa and Maria 7.95/10
I love it musically - the sung and rapped parts go together very nicely, with everything held thematically together by the backing instrumentation. It's a very beautiful soundscape that I can get lost in, with the chanting and Jerry's vocalizations, and the rap part is very strong. In terms of its lyrics and subject matter... well, I'm really not a fan of Mother Teresa and my brain really dislikes the "... divas were born as A human beings" bit, but the lyrics generally flow pretty well too. "З нами мама Тереза й Діва Марія Босі, ніби по лезу, йшли по землі" is another one of those eargasms.
5: Portugal - Grito 8/10
My god. This starts slow, but gets so intense. The melody is so beautiful, it's light yet heavy with emotion at the same time. There's a connection there that I can just feel. The grito is SO worth the buildup - it's so cathartic - and the contrast between the chorus and the verses just feels so good. The soundscape is amazing, and it has a really clear theme all the way through. It's great.
4: Spain - Zorra 8.15/10
Lyrically, it's lovely, its wonderful, it makes me feel - I love the "you and your judgy ass can gtfo, it's none of your business what I do" attitude, and "Zorra" itself is such a wonderful hook. I'm not a middle aged woman who gets judged for no reason, but I feel SO ready to cheer Mery on as she tells her haters to fuck off. In fact, in terms of lyrics I have this right at the top of the pile (along with Croatia). This is so authentic, and so soulful, and musically speaking, the musical resolution/change as she sings "I'm in a good place now" really helps to lift the mood of the piece. What keeps this from going higher for me is the ending, which I think doesn't quite end on as strong a note, especially since the start and middle throw so many punches.
3: Slovenia - Veronika 8.55/10
First response
Second response: Oooooh, what an interesting story! I'm a sucker for stories, especially when they involve folklore of some sort, and I love this (and Fulenn, and Shum, and Sentimentai, among others). The lyrics flow very well, and the drama and tension just keeps building and building as we get to the chorus and beyond. The bridge ("Jaz sem, ti si, Veronika") is delivered just SO DAMN WELL, and the high notes in the background just elevate it and give it another dimension, after how low-pitched the verses are. Simply wonderful.
2: Italy - La Noia 8.7/10
I love this. I hope this doesn't sound presumptive, but the lyrics definitely feel very depression-coded. I'm not really sure how to explain it, but even with the danceability of the music, the feeling the lyrics give me is one of not just boredom, but also apathy, cynicism, and escapism from it all... things that, without going into too much detail, I can relate to. And the musical accompaniment in the chorus just has so much flair, like it's singing its own part of the song rather than merely supporting Angelina's voice. I also love the changes they made to the vocal line in the last chorus so that it wasn't just a straight copy and paste (looking at you, UK, and a few others this year). Brilliant song.
1: Croatia - Rim Tim Tagi Dim 9.05/10
This song is absolutely amazing. Its lyrics can be hard-hitting ("There's no going back, my presence faces to black"), loaded with emotion and meaning ("Maybe they also know our dance") and hilarious ("Meow, cat, please meow back"). It tells a story that's so relatable to many and packages it up into a lovely earworm. The hook is SO catchy, and the vibe of this just sweeps me off my feet and into his world, and it's amazing. And to think, if not for someone pulling out, Baby Lasagna never would've made it to Eurovision this year! Wow. Without a doubt, my winner of 2024.
Right so that's it! Feel free to disagree in the comments, and I'm looking forward to hearing why I'm wrong and you're right :D

My Pre-Show Song Ranking (probably only medium hot takes)
I really felt like writing a ranking post tonight so here we are. I'm making it this early because I want to compare this to how I feel after the show. I mostly go off of studio cuts but where live performances are available, I'll take them into account
Disclaimer: All opinions are my own, it's cool if you disagree, I'm a snarky bitch and a dumbass so treat this ranking accordingly
I am not including Azerbaijan nor Israel for reasons I'm not interested in discussing here. You can't change my mind, downvote if you’re so inclined and move on, ta ta
35. Malta (Sarah Bonnici - Loop)
I'm sorry but this song is a train wreck. Uninspired beat, uninspired lyrics, the live was... Kind of uncomfortable to watch? It seems like a song that was mostly created just to be a backdrop to the choreography and then the choreography was just... They really said "we have Chanel at home". Her vocals were also just not there unfortunately, probably thanks to all the movement. I’m being too harsh? FINE, she's kind of adorable though so I can't really hate this number too much. Damn it, even the last place is still tolerable which must be some kind of ESC record
34. Moldova (Natalia Barbu - In the Middle)
This song, rather than outright bad or boring like Malta, is just kind of bizarre. The lyrics are confusing (my beautiful angel, my work of art? lady, what are you TALKING ABOUT), there doesn't seem to be any conceivable direction the song is trying to take itself. It just trudges on, then trudges on with her chirping random operatic high notes while doing a faux violin solo. I don't know man
33. Iceland (Hera Björk - Scared of Heights)
Come on 1999 realness. It has its charm and I guess from here we're already approaching songs I don't actively dislike and am mostly neutral about. This song just sounds kind of dated, it's very... RuPaul-esque. Does that make sense? She seems lovely but aside from a small smile, this song does nothing for me, really
32. Luxembourg (Tali - Fighter)
This was my number 2 at Luxembourg's NF and it being down here really is a testament to this year's quality. The song is nice and playful and I like the post-chorus bridge (studio version at least, live was kind of messy) but all in all, this doesn't really evoke many feelings in me. I hope they polish the stage show, her vocals were mostly there but it just didn't pop (a running theme with Luxembourg this year). ...Anyway justice for my girl Krick
31. Denmark (Saba - Sand)
Imma be honest, I can't put my finger on why I just don't vibe with this song. It's pleasant, her vocals are really good but something about this just makes me feel bored, it’s just a normal pop song. Maybe it's the SAAND, SAAAAAAAAND that's grating to me. The staging was also kind of just there, she was standing on an IKEA Linnmon with a smoke machine. I would really love Denmark to qualify one of these years
30. Germany (Isaak - Always on the Run)
I'm always on the runnanna-eeee runnannaa-eee 🐘🐘🐘📯📯🎺 Oh Germany, my new home country. I was so hopeful you'd pop your bratwurtussy and climb out of this hole other Big 5 countries already did (well, UK is debatable, this year will tell if Sam was a once-in-a-lifetime styrofoam trumpet summoned miracle). But this song, unfortunately, is not it. Facepalmed watching the NF, gave my coworkers shit for it the next day. Better luck next time. Pity since Isaak seems so sweet. His smile is so benevolent I can't explain it-
29. Czechia (Aiko - Pedestal)
This should be dead last. It somehow grew on me even though I don't like anything about this song really. This should be dead last. There's something kind of endearing about how simplistic the song is and the energy is there. This should be dead last. The live show is already iconic. This should be dead last- Not now honey, Squibbles is fighting with herself
28. Albania (Besa - Titan)
Titan in disguise is unintentionally hilarious, otherwise the revamp just tanked this song. I actually kind of liked it, it was somewhere around 20th place initially before the English version came out. The song just flowed so much better in Albanian. Disappointed, shaking my head. Anyway, what even IS a titan in disguise?
27. Australia (Electric Fields - One Mikali (One Blood))
The didgeridoo is banger. There's some groove to it. My dad would probably do embarrassing dad dance moves to this. That being said, I just don't like this more than the ones above, I'm so sorry. Please pop live, I want to like this so much more than I do
26. Poland (Luna - Tower)
Ignoring Jystyna (sacrilegious of me, I know), this song is pretty okay. A bit bland, not all that remarkable but it has a pleasant drive to it and I constantly find it stuck in my head, especially when I wake up from naps. Wonder what's up with that, Luna might be my sleep paralysis demon
25. Cyprus (Silia Kapsis - Liar)
Entering songs I think are pretty okay. Liar is a formulaic ass composition riding on the producer working overtime to make it pop. And pop it does, I love the beat in the chorus, it's got a real nice kick to it. It will need a very good choreography to stand out though, but as a studio cut it's jammable even if only languidly
24. Finland (Windows95Man - No Rules!)
It's the weakest of the shitposter songs but I still like it okay. I did kind of sigh a little when it won UMK but I need to admit the denim egg and lowered pants were iconic. I'm positively BEGGING them to keep that security guard who comes on stage with a clipboard of rules, I was gagged. The composition (aside from the eagle noise, the eagle noise is perfect), is just kind of there, I don't think it's nearly as funny as it's trying to be. That doesn't make it unlovable though
23. Georgia (Nutsa Buzaladze - Firefighter)
This song is just kind of there until they hit that bridge but that “put out the fire, put out the fire (insert a fucking stunning instrumental section here)” bridge is SO FUCKING GOOD I can't put this lower. Not a fan of the shouty singing style nor the lyrics. It’s a pretty cookie cutter girl bop aside from that damn bridge. The curse of a good bridge. We cross it and wish for the best
22. Serbia (Teya Dora - Ramonda)
This is kind of an odd song where when I hear it, I'm like "yeah, this is good, I like this" but then I immediately forget it afterwards. And I can't for the life of me figure out why? Maybe it's because it's kind of similar to the other TikTok viral song she had and my brain is amalgamating the two? Anyway, it's a sensual ballad that's not afraid to take its time, I like that in a song. I appreciate this even if it's this far down (good year, thing is known)
21. Sweden (Marcus & Martinus - Unforgettable)
If Cyprus had a bland composition carried by production, Sweden has an okay composition carried by the spirit of RedOne descending onto whoever produced this (do people know RedOne? People should know RedOne). The staging helps this a lot too, it's quite the spectacle and I think it'll make a very good opener for the grand final night. That production though, I'll still be thinking about it on my deathbed
20. San Marino (Megara - 11:11)
Here we have a song that has a very good kick to it, lots of energy, a chaotic stage show and a killer bridge with the Iberian acoustic guitar strumming in with that matador realness. I'm a sucker for good bridges, I can't help it. Anyway, this needs some serious polish but I can't keep myself from liking this song quite a bit. I think a big part of my attachment to this song is because it was the ending point of the fever dream that was UVPSM. After that song, I was finally free
19. France (Slimane - Mon Amour)
This song is carried 99% by Slimane himself. His vocal performance is something that will make the juries spit out their drinks and hurry to the studies of their ivory towers to send a wax sealed letter to EBU to give it their 12 points. I like his passion and I suspect were it anyone else singing this, this would be 10 places lower. You go guy
18. United Kingdom (Olly Alexander - Dizzy)
Competent pop with a bit of spice by adding those major chords in, delish. This is bound to make Carol and her gay grandson proud. If the live vocals are there, this might do surprisingly well with the juries. Loving the queer rep this year. I hate that I don’t have more to say about this, it’s just... Good. Solid. Mhm
17. Portugal (Iolanda - Grito)
This song just comes alive when sung live. I was a bit underwhelmed by the studio version but the live performance took my breath away. Her voice is lovely and I'm admittedly a sucker for some Iberian guitar. God I want to have my heart broken in Portugal
16. Croatia (Baby Lasagna - Rim Tim Tagi Dim)
Now listen, just because he's not top 10 or even top 15 doesn't mean I'm a contrarian hater. I like the song, it's very lively, it has that constant riff in the background that never slows down and keeps the song going like a chugging train, the techno bridge is easily the best part of the song. I don’t really like the chorus that much, I think it doesn’t sound that fresh, the verses are very fun though. I may not be as in love with this as most others but it's very good and BL (Baby Lasagna, get back weebs) just seems very endearing
15. Ukraine (Alyona Alyona & Terry Heil - Teresa & Maria)
It's big, it's dramatic, it's angsty, I just know the staging will slap (Ukraine always delivers on that front). Terry's vocals are fragile and wailing like she’s in pain, I love the atmosphere of the song. I like the chorus much more than the verses, admittedly, when Alyona kicks in it's a bit 🗣️🗣️🗣️. You know it’s a good Christian bop when even my atheist ass recognizes it as such. We're at a point where the tiniest things knock songs down because I need my top 10 to be pristine
14. Latvia (Dons - Hollow)
Shut up, I need to be there for my man Dons who's single-handedly saved this year's reaction picture tally from feeling lacklustre. On a serious note though, this entry is very slow and contemplative. The composition is rather simple and all in all there's not that much that would bring it this high, but I just love this moody atmosphere and his voice. The raspy resonance of his voice in the chorus just has me in a chokehold. Latvia bringing me the NQ I will cry the most at two years in a row
(Me in June holding back tears in a public space because I suddenly remembered this didn’t qualify)
13. Spain (Nebulossa - Zorra)
I always go into this song thinking I'll like it less and finally snap out of it but then the synths just kick me right in my tits and knock my breath out. I love the percussion in this thing, the stylized almost synthwave-adjacent 80s synth, the mellow vocals that kind of feel like they're there to support those killer synths. The live show was a bit much but I vibe so hard to this. How are we already at songs that would be top 5 last year?
12. Armenia (Ladaniva - Jako)
What a FUN SONG??? Oh my goodness what a blast. So energetic but in a completely different way from the other chaotic bangers. This one has that lovely traditional instrumentation that really sets it apart. I find myself whistling this all the time. Her energy is infectious and that horn hook just won't leave my system (and I don't want it to)
11. Austria (Kaleen - We Will Rave)
This is such a dumb eurotrash song and I shouldn't like it this much but it's such a bop. It's an escapism song, or it would be if I was the partying type. I'd dance to this right now if I wasn’t busy disassociating by reading Wikipedia articles about plane crashes. But I’ll have this in the background while I do that. You win this one Jimmy Joker, but this is not over yet
10. Italy (Angelina Mango - La Noia)
This is such a Mediterranean summer bop and I'm here for it. I love the instrumentation, the percussion and the slightly unconventional melody lines we have going on, something about the whole package just feels incredibly fresh to me. Also unrelated but I really enjoyed the music video
9. Estonia (5miinust & Puuluup - (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi)
This is such a ridiculous song. It's somehow simultaneously the plainest and the most unhinged of the chaotic songs. Something about the bridge after the first verse with the yell leading into the messy chaos that is the chorus just cracks me up every time. The talharpa(?) also goes so fucking hard. I really really hope they know how to stage this, I worry about whether this will qualify in SF2. Regardless, I only understand vitamiini spiidi but I live
8. Ireland (Bambie Thug - Doomsday Blue)
I was rooting for Bambie from the moment I heard the song. I always thought it's not going to happen. The shriek I let out when it happened (I used up all my NF luck currency on this win ngl, so many robberies after). I am a sucker for experimental everything. Experimental vocals, genre shifts, songs that are not afraid of just being ugly if that's what you need to get the message across. There's also a clear vision behind the song and music video, can't wait to see what they'll do with this (respectfully begging Ireland's delegation to BACK THE FUCK OFF and not ruin this)
7. Switzerland (Nemo - The Code)
Talk about coming in with a crash. This is a song that hits instantly. It's overwhelming the first time you hear and then it settles into controlled chaos. Love it. I personally love mixing vocal styles and the rap verse is just the cherry on top. When I first heard it I had to pause to be like "wait a minute, is this just everything but the kitchen sink and your ADHD brain latches onto that or is this a genuine well-thought out banger?", turns out it was a genuine banger. Nemo will slay. This is the first entry I would love to see win btw, with six more to go. Lord have mercy this year is an absolute unit
6. Slovenia (Raiven - Veronika)
This is so bombastic and majestic. I would say epic if it didn't make me feel like I'm time traveling to 2009 9Gag. I love the orchestral background, her voice is incredibly resonant and well controlled, the siren notes at the last part always give me insane goosebumps. I just hope they stick the landing with the staging and let this get to the final. I can't wait to see whether this will be top 5 or bottom 5 with juries. Also I can't be the only one who's reminded of that one Attack on Titan soundtrack???? Pls tell me you know what I'm talking about
5. Greece (Marina Satti - ZARI)
I was immediately fascinated when I heard the song but it took me 2-3 more listens to decide I adore it. And I really do. The beat is so aggressively heavy and the arrangement is so aggressively minimalistic, with the sudden section changes it creates this unsettling contrast. That vocoder bridge always grabs me by the throat, slams me to the wall and tells me to FUCKING LISTEN. Also apparently a bit of a hot take but I love the music video. It feels like a 2009 ARG I'd stumble upon at 3 in the morning. Marble Hornets who?
4. Netherlands (Joost Klein - Europapa)
This grew on me. First like a tumour where it wouldn't leave me alone and would without my consent get stuck in my brain, then Stockholm Syndrome took over and now I love it. Send help. Or don't, I don't care tbh, I like it here (I think). Something about the beat and the texture of the synths just scratches my brain in the best possible way. Joost also just seems plain unhinged. He is a crackhead but so am I, so who am I to judge? Welkom in Europa jongen! (dances an elemetary school core choreography)
3. Lithuania (Silvester Belt - Luktelk)
This had me two chords in. I was his. The atmosphere of this song just transports me. This is a song I would hear in the background of a neo-noir sci fi movie, at the shady bar where I've gone to get intel on the new synthetic drug. The beat is so loud I can't hear what the dealer is saying. Android strippers dance on the table next to me. This is the vibe. I'm here for it. That midsection goes so hard btw
2. Belgium (Mustii - Before the Party’s Over)
Well what do you know, a somewhat conventional song in my top 3. Just well made noir pop with moody lighting, good vocals, probably the best (English) lyrics of the year and the promise of stunning visuals in the live. Is it the well crafted pop part that gets me by the balls or is it the synthwave synths in the background and the piano riff that comes in towards the build to the climax of the song? We may never know. All we know is that he is my king and I will ride to war for him
1. Norway (Gåte - Ulveham)
This song was just a complete showstopper to me the first time I saw it in MGP. It uses atmosphere and shifting dynamics so incredibly well to create contrasts, it knows when to build up and understands that a song like this needs to up the stakes throughout. I don't care that it's just verse-chorus-verse-chorus-chorus, it's stunning. The last chorus with the high note, Gunnhild bending back on the rotating platform and the whispery 👹👹👹 vocals going crazy in the background always make uncontrollable chills go down my spine. My arms look like someone plucked all the feathers off of a chicken. I am in love
Whew. As usual, I've written way too much and I'm sure most of it is nonsense but I'll go ahead and post this anyway. I'd love to hear what you do and don't agree with!

2024.03.10 09:21 TheHarrowingMedley Personal Eurovision 2024 NF awards

With the NF season wrapping up with Festival da Cançao, it is time for me to give out my personal awards for this national final season for the first time. I hope you have a great time reading this post.
Most underrated NF song: Diamanti Grezzi 🇮🇹 (I cannot believe this placed 24th overall in Sanremo, super catchy and great vocals)
Most overrated NF song: Here To Stay 🇪🇸 (Never understood the hype from the casual Eurovision fanbase, it felt pretentious)
Most surprising moment: Windows95man winning despite being last in the juries 🇫🇮
Best NF storyline: Baby Lasagna being a reserve artist for Dora then winning 🇭🇷
Best NF live performance moment: Benidorm crowd singing along to Zorra 🇪🇸 (The crowd added to the enjoyment of this performance)
Most surprising NF: Dora 🇭🇷 (Definitely the best edition of Dora I have watched)
Most disappointing NF: Benidorm Fest 🇪🇸 (The bar was set too high in 2023 and somehow the live show gave even more disappointment)
Most surprising NF live performance: No Rules 🇫🇮 (The staging was magnificent from the giant egg and the pyrotechnic pants)
Most disappointing NF live performance: Wundebar 🇪🇪 (The staging is so lackluster and does not do justice to the song’s mood)
Biggest grower: Hold Me Now 🇪🇪 (From 20th to 6th, the live performance really brought out this song)
Biggest grower-off: You Can’t Hide 🇵🇹 (From 2nd to 13th, the live performance lacked so much staging, should have added dancers)
Best male vocals: Sexmane 🇫🇮 (Very underrated overall this season, despite the surprising key change, the live performance was still very good)
Best female vocals: Angelina Mango 🇮🇹 (Absolutely love the confidence within her voice, especially in the acapella part)
Most disappointing vocals: Marlena 🇪🇸 (I like the studio version, but the live performance was very off)
Most unique song: (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi 🇪🇪 (A folk & rap song in Estonian with the longest ESC song title ever; what’s not to love)
Catchiest song: (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi 🇪🇪 (The melody is already catchy enough but the stage presence of both 5miinust & Puuluup is the cherry on top)
Most emotional NF live performance: Paskana 🇫🇮 (Took a while for me to like this song but really like it now, I can see the heart she put into the performance)
Best staging: No Rules 🇫🇮 (I lost it when the pants came down then started spewing out flames)
Guilty pleasure: Slavic English 🇺🇦 (Did not get it at first but now I have a soft spot for it)
Best lyrics: Zorra 🇪🇸 (A song that is meant to change the meaning of a derogatory word is iconic)
Best runner-up: Gnezdo orlovo 🇷🇸 (I am not one of those toxic Serbian fans who complain about this not winning. Ramonda is amazing but this is a great runner-up)
Best last place [Grand Final/Superfinal]: Kuori mua 🇫🇮 (Very undeserved in my opinion)
Best NQ: No se me olvida 🇪🇸(This has no right of being dead last overall in Benidorm Fest)
Best song roster: Sanremo 🇮🇹 (Already high expectations were exceeded after listening to this lineup)
Best solo male act: Silvester Belt 🇱🇹 (I’m saying it; Lithuanian is having one of the best comebacks for a native language in the history of Eurovision
Best solo female act: Annalisa 🇮🇹 (I really do hope she makes it into Eurovision one day)
Best duo act: Nebulossa 🇪🇸 (Absolute icons)
Best group act: Gåte 🇳🇴 (What an amazing comeback for the Norwegian language which has been absent since 2006)
Best returning ESC act: Konstrakta 🇷🇸 (Everything about the live performance was greatly executed from the song to the staging)
Best returning NF act: Annalisa 🇮🇹 (After listening to her 2018 & 2021 Sanremo entries I realized just how much of gem she is to Italy)
Strongest NF Semi-Final/Heat: Pesma za Evroviziju Semi-Final 2 🇷🇸 (Teya Dora, Konstrakta, Zejna, Filip Baloš, Kat Dosa just to name a few had great songs)
Weakest NF Semi-Final/Heat: MESC XOW 3 🇲🇹 (Still crazy to think that not a single song from this heat made it to the final of MESC)
Strongest NF top 3: Pesma za Evroviziju 🇷🇸 (Actual top 3 is my top 3 as well and in addition the winner is my runner-up for Eurovision 2024)
Weakest NF top 3: Das deutsche Finale 🇩🇪 (Ryk was solid but Isaak & Max fell flat to me)
Most surprising win: 11:11 🇸🇲 (Really believed that Loredana was clearly winning from the discourse around UVPSM but out of nowhere the second chance winner went on to win)
Most expected win: Teresa & Maria 🇺🇦 (Even though I wanted Tsunamia to win this was most likely set to win since the final Vidbir lineup was revealed)

2024.03.03 12:47 _Hale___ the current situation of the big 5; what do you think about them this year?

the current situation of the big 5; what do you think about them this year?
With the fact that it's been a couple of days since Dizzy came out and we now have the full Big 5 class, I was wondering what people thought about it. If I had to give my opinion this year the big 5 class is very strange. 4/5 of the songs highlight typical characteristics of their countries (except Germany) and give you different sensations from each other (we have a ballad in French, an English pop song, 2 Spanish songs - oh sorry my bad but you understand, and then a radio-friendly song which is not bad but not the best one, even though Isaak was my winner of the German selection). in general the only song I don't like is Zorra, but it has a very iconic performance that saves it, while Alwasy on the Run and Dizzy are very nice but give me the feeling of 2 songs that could have given more, Slimane instead with Mon Amour and after the performance at DORA it always makes me emotional, especially in the last chorus, and my favorite is Angelina and La Noia is my “number 1” of this 5 because for the liveliness of the song with a feeling of bitterness (in a positive sense) caused by the lyrics . What about you instead? How do you think the big 5 are this year?
