2024.05.14 16:03 novaleenationstate Medical malpractice suit over miscarriage complications?

A little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with a molar pregnancy and told that the pregnancy was not viable. I was in between PCP providers (had relocated recently), but was referred to someone who diagnosed the molar pregnancy,l and then referred me to a different OBGYN who they claimed had more experience with molars, and who would be better able to perform the D&C. That specialist couldn’t fit me in for a couple of weeks, so I had to wait.
When they finally did perform the D&C, it was about 3 weeks after the initial molar diagnosis (and about a 5 weeks after I’d first seen the doctor; I was about 12 weeks along when the D&C was performed). The procedure seemed to go as normal; two weeks after it I had a post-op checkup where the specialist said everything looked good and like I was healing like normal. I felt better, everything seemed in the clear, and I was ready to move forward.
About 2.5 weeks after that post-op checkup for the D&C, I was just eating breakfast and stood up to put my bowl in the sink, and suddenly had a massive hemorrhage. I started to pass out within a few minutes, and my partner kept me conscious and called for an ambulance.
I ended up having two additional massive hemorrhages within 24 hours at the hospital and ended up hospitalized for five days. The team at this hospital (separate from the one I’d gone to for the first D&C) said that the first D&C had been incomplete and there was still a significant amount of tissue that had not been removed. It had started to spread, it had placed significant pressure on my right femoral artery, and that contributed to the massive hemorrhaging. Ended up needing an Angioseal on my right femoral artery, as well as a blood transfusion and a second D&C. Up until day 4 at the hospital, they were telling me there was a significant possibility that they would need to perform an emergency hysterectomy in order to save my life, and if the second D&C failed. Because it was a confirmed molar pregnancy via genetic testing and my HCG levels were abnormally high, they said there was a cancer risk attached and if those HCG levels did not drop after the second D&C, I would likely need to undergo chemotherapy.
Ultimately, the procedures they did seem to have worked; I did not undergo an emergency hysterectomy, did weekly blood tests after being discharged to monitor HCG levels (which dropped significantly after), and at my post-stay checkup a month later, they said I was looking good and they did not think chemotherapy would be necessary. I haven’t had any events/medical emergencies since.
However, I struggled with depression virtually all of last year. I have no pre-existing chronic health issues, never stayed in the hospital that long ever, and I’m in my mid 30s and have no kids (but partner and I do want them). I never had a miscarriage or anything before that. For the last year, I have struggled with general loss of energy and fatigue (which affected my job performance), intrusive thoughts and nightmares about hemorrhaging again, and with general sadness and anxiety about everything in that area. And I’m terrified about trying for another pregnancy even though I do want children because I’m terrified of having the experience happen again. Two different therapists last year believed I was experiencing PTSD from medical trauma related to the event, on top of depression.
Last year, I just did not have the strength or will to do much of anything and focused on just surviving/making it through the day. I did not speak to any lawyers and also was on the fence about whether I even should try to—never did a medical malpractice suit and not even sure if I’d have one, since technically I did not ultimately need an emergency hysterectomy. Also was hesitant because of the stigma around medical malpractice suits. It’s been a little over a year now, not sure if my time has run out there, but am wondering, would it be worthwhile to reach out to an attorney?

2024.05.14 16:03 Murky_waterLLC The Greatest Congame in the History of the Universe

Ok, Before I begin, this is my longest Story yet. It was only meant to be a short story, but I don't think 40 pages on a google doc can fit in a single comment thread, so expect multiple posts. Second, I'd really appreciate feedback, even if it's just in the form of an upvote as it really encourages me to keep up this creative outlet. That's all from me, enjoy the story.
Dialog Key:
[Translated]: Dates, Units of Measurement, or other Grammatical terms will be retrofitted to be legible for readers while still staying true to their definition
{Exposition}: Immediate context regarding events, People, Entities, or other key points that allow for understanding amongst different cultures.
We were tricked, completely and utterly duped. It hit us not like a train, but like a lit fuse approaching a massive stack of trinitrotoluene that we were too blind to see until we found ourselves crammed into the tens of thousands of “Corporate Nexuses” that occupied every startup colony, production world, trade hub, and capital world; working ourselves to death. The worst part? We had nobody else to blame but ourselves.
We were blinded by our hubris, our minds stuck in the past, refusing to adapt. All it took was one fledgling, pre-FTL race that made adaptability a main point of their society and culture. One society with just enough cunning to see through and undermine us and our ploys. One Species to pull off what the Humans called “The Greatest Con Game In The History of The Universe.” So where to begin?
We first discovered Humans when they had nearly finished construction on their star’s [Dyson Swarm], though to us, given the vast distances between the galactic core and Earth, we only noticed a minor anomaly, a stable G-class main sequence star flickering in the void of space. It seemed as though someone, or something, was trying to either signal us, or power their stellar civilization for the first time. But in reality, the structure was already done.
When we dropped out of warp roughly [2 AU] away from their 4th gas giant, we immediately began picking up massive arrays of signals and spikes of energy. Turns out our exploration drones had just wandered into a system-wide intraspecies conflict. Spikes in both heat and radiation from nuclear warheads littered their second asteroid belt as our sensors picked up on hundreds, no, thousands of ships, primitive in nature, sure, but still armed [to the teeth]. Their similar design and technological levels seemed to back the idea that this was the same species blowing each other up, and not some other race or civilization.
The last thing our exploration fleet picked up was the warning of multiple target locks as [4 dozen] missiles were launched from what we presumed was a frigate, at our drones. Our drones took evasive actions, though nearly all of them were destroyed in nuclear fire. Only one survived by being manually overridden and found a crater in a massive asteroid to hide in. The human forces must have thought they were of the enemy’s as it never came back up in diplomatic discussion when first contact was established, but I digress.
We weren’t ready to give up first contact just yet so we had our drones observe from afar and move in only when it was safe. We recorded the entire battle. Despite their relatively primitive technology, their ingenuity couldn’t be understated. They used remarkably simple solutions that likely would have ravaged our then-finest warships. We watched as swarms of nigh-indestructible drones simply carved through ship after ship, targeting weak points like reactor cores and bridges that would completely disable the ship. The only thing, it seemed, that could stop these drones were other drones of similar make and model.
Other times, when that didn’t work, we saw them fire missiles at extreme speeds directly into the hull of the enemy. Miraculously, however, they didn’t explode or tear through the armor, they merely embedded themselves into the ship and sealed the holes they made. We found this odd, perhaps a series of malfunctions? Or Factory sabotage? Subterfuge wasn’t uncommon in galactic wars, it was an art that was hard to master, but given the unorthodox yet effective tactics of these primitives, the assumption could be made that they had become proficient in the art of espionage as well.
But we noticed something odd. Several ships struck by these missiles began taking hits to their weapon efficiency, and they began suffering power shortages before going completely offline. A short while later the missiles would extract themselves from the armor and return to their mother ship, and the victimized ship would spontaneously self-destruct when all of the missiles had long departed.
A closer examination of these weapons told us that these were not missiles at all, but boarding shuttles! How could any species survive those levels of [G]-forces!? We once again watched the carnage repeated on another small ship. Watching several heat signatures, these entry teams would breach the hull of the ship and disperse in two separate directions before our sensors stopped picking up on them. We could fill in the blanks from there: They would go through the ship, butchering the crew and initiating the self-destruction of the ship before escaping with their lives.
Pirate tactics, minus the unnecessary depredation of valuable loot, I suppose.
When the battle finally cleared, after [16 Earth Standard Days] mind you, a ridiculously long time to be [duking it out], We watched as the surviving ships scoured for survivors, occasionally firing off a few nuclear warheads at the corpses of large combat apparatus before they turned tail and headed towards what our sensor’s picked up was what appeared to be an outer system shipyard. Our drone was given the go-ahead to move further into the system which became harder and harder to do in secret. There were at least several hundred orbital habitats and [lunar] colonies were spread out across the system, most, if not all of which we had to evade. For [13 Earth Standard Months] we had to hide our drone in what we later learned was one of the “Trojan” belts because one of their gas giants, and all of its dozens of lunar colonies, were giving us a shallow berth in detection ranges.

2024.05.14 16:02 IrisK_H Zyprexa and Clarity on Delusions

For anyone that started Zyprexa/Olanzapine during psychosis, how long did it take for delusions to start to subside?
I'm dealing with my partner that has spent 2 years in a psychosis state and so far he's seen a little clarity for the delusion that got him hospitalized, but not any of the other delusions that he's been living with. It's strange that all the other off the wall delusions are still valid to him but not the most recent which was on the same level of bizarre.
Last night was day 4 of Zyprexa for him.

2024.05.14 16:01 music_plants_life my ex is being really weird, please help what do i do??? :(

when i was in like 7th grade and like 12 years old (im 16 now by the way) i dated this girl on and off
and when i say on and off i mean like 5 times in the span of 2 years (2020-2022) in which they broke up with me and then asked me out again 5 times
back then i was stupid and i went back every time bc i thought we were in love
i wont go into detail about the relationship because 1) i have zero care for how i was treated back then anymore, im over it 2) it was a lot and id be here forever even if i did want to talk about it
but to sum it up all of my friends absolutely hated this person and were mad i was dating them and were over the moon when we broke up for good
after a couple months after our last breakup we did what has always happened after we broke up and we formed a friendship again, i went shopping with them and got food with them, car rides with them etc
in 2023 i started dating the most amazing man i could have ever asked for, he has truly been a blessing in my life and has really changed my life for the better, and to top it all off he has really shown me how a healthy relationship should be. He has shown me so much kindness and has gone above and beyond for me and i'm so appreciative of him and all his kindness, he has taught me real love
when me and him started dating i stopped being around this ex
  1. because now that i was dating my amazing boyfriend i realized i used to hang around them in some hope they'd show me that temporary love again (i was very blind and easily controlled 👎)
  2. because now that i had realized this and was finally aware of how awful the situation had been and was now completely over them i realized they have always made me somewhat uncomfortable
and 3. who the hell wants to be around there toxic ex?? especially when i'm now in a serious relationship? being around an ex you were long term with is just lowkey weird, if my bf was friends with an ex he was long term with, even if completely over them, i'd be lying if i said it wouldn't weird me out and make me uncomfortable, i respect my partner and he respects me
anyways, my ex hadn't tried to reach out to me since and they honestly haven't crossed my mind in half a year i thought (and hoped) that was the end of the story
TILL RECENTLY my friend group from one of my school activities is also somewhat friends with my ex, and this has never bugged me, but apparently it has bugged my ex strongly.
because half a year later since i stopped talking to this ex apparently they have started complaining to my friend in this shared group about how they • feel excluded when im around • feel i've been ignoring them • and how they believe this is all my boyfriends fault, and that my boyfriend is "controlling" who i talk to
its escalated because they brought it up to my friend again and said they were going to "confront" me about it?????
this kinda happened a couple months ago when they asked this friend if i dating my current boyfriend and trying to get info, but my friend said they should stop being weird.
Now they are back at it worse than before??
why can't they just let me go and leave me alone?
to be perfectly clear my boyfriend is the furthest thing from controlling, and im very offended that my ex is 1) trying to bad mouth him and 2) painting him as controlling and assuming im only destined for toxic manipulative controlling relationships like the one i was in with them
i know im better than that now and i think its wild they believe there has to be some outside force keeping me from talking to them
the reality is it was completely my own decision to stop talk talking to them, and i've been very happy with my decision
my boyfriend doesn't know about the current situation i haven't told him because hearing that someone is painting him to be controlling would break his heart, he is so kind and it's made me absolutely livid that my ex is so immature they have to shit talk my boyfriend to feel better about themselves
but should i tell him? and besides telling him, what do i do about the situation??
do i confront my ex and tell them to get a grip and stop being an obsessive creep? or is that what they want and should i just not ingage in the situation at all
PLEASE help me 🙏🙏☹️

2024.05.14 16:01 samplay31 Theories about how the show will end. Let's share!

I've seen several theories about how the show might end, especially now that we have all the synopsis for the episodes that are left to be aired. I wanted to know which one is yours?
Theory #1 : The wildfire causes multiple firefighters to be injured and get near-death experiences in which they see a potential future, which results in most members of the station deciding to move away from it. Andy gets to pick a fresh new team like her father did before her. Vic expands Crisis One nationally, Maya goes into the fire academy or inspection, Travis goes with Ruiz and Amaya, Beckett retires, Ben goes back to Grey Sloane, and Sullivan and Ross marry and leave on their honeymoon.
Theory #2 : Andy dies at the wildfire by saving her team like her father did. While she saves them, they all hallucinate what a potential future might be for them.
Theory #3 : The Station goes up in flames and no longer exists because of the wildfire. They all part their ways while waiting for another potential station to be built somewhere. They have a last drink at Joe's bar and talk/day-dream about a potential future.
Theory #4 : Ross reveals she made a terrible deal with the Mayor : privatizing the city's first responders. All stations will close. Andy pairs up with Drew Farris (the union guy) and both fight their last call as public firefighters at the wildfire. Coming close to dying, all members see their life flash before their eyes, including a flash forward of what could have been.

2024.05.14 16:01 ProBonerCounsel When it comes to custody how much are courts willing to tolerate?

I separated with my ex a year ago after she had an affair and her undiagnosed personality disorder became too much the bear. We currently share custody of our 2 kids (10 and 7) and the relationship between myself and my ex is awful as she is just a terrible person to deal with about anything.
Lately I'm growing more and more concerned with the wellbeing of my kids given the state of things that I hear from the kids (which I note down with date+time I learned of it)
Things like:
It seems there's nothing I can do about this and just allow it to happen. It seems so wrong and broken to me that it requires a mother to basically be a severe drug addict living with a sexual predator for them to lose custody. Meanwhile the damage to my children's mental health is a paramount concern and I'm powerless.
Is there anything I can do to protect my children?

2024.05.14 16:00 UnDead_Ted What Really is Faith? Truths to Boost Your Walk of Faith

What Really is Faith? Truths to Boost Your Walk of Faith
Here's one of the most surprising things I've encountered personally and as a minister in spiritual life: believers struggling with believing God’s Word. The more I interact with other Christians in our ministry, including pastors and ministers, the more I realize we truly have a faith problem in the Church. While there are many reasons for this, today we will get back to Faith 101 to discuss fatih from first principles in a way that you will absorb and understand fully—I pray! I want to share a few truths to help clarify what faith means, starting with the basics.
https://preview.redd.it/oe0p17l9b1wc1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e0a381c4f09374808fa7aa317c2ce925dff6b7d

The Error of “Acting to Prove Your Faith”

Years ago, after absorbing numerous teachings on faith to resolve my own faith problems, I adhered to a common notion from my Pentecostal background. Since faith implies action, you must do something to "release" or "activate" your faith. Believing in God for financial provision, I brainstormed ways to “prove I have believed” or “release my faith”. I began doing things to “show that I have believed”—a major faith error.
Here’s another poignant example from my dual role as a doctor and minister: witnessing Christians stop taking medications or rejecting medical treatments "in faith," leading to disastrous results.
Tip: Faith is seen in our actions, but we must not prove it artificially. What we truly believe will show how we naturally talk and act when we are "not in a conditioned faith mode".
These two examples underscore one problem: there is a widespread misunderstanding of what faith really is and how it works, especially among us charismatics or Pentecostals.

Understanding Faith from Everyday Life

This simple yet profound insight can unlock a deeper understanding of faith: the principle of faith is integral to our everyday life.
I'll use everyday examples to illustrate how we already operate under the principle of faith in daily matters and then highlight how this differs from our faith in Christ.
A Young Woman with Many Suitors
https://preview.redd.it/mxjgnyneb1wc1.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=45d2ba20a6097889a20e043f4bd2817d424bb30c
Consider a young woman courted by multiple suitors. Naturally, she desires to know their true characters, aiming for a partner who would treat her with love, respect, and tenderness. Upon learning from a trusted friend that one suitor is disrespectful and abusive, she believes this information and naturally rejects him.
This reaction embodies the principle of faith: hearing information, believing it, and acting accordingly.
  • She made her decisions based on information she had and, most especially, information she believed.
  • That is how faith works—the principle of faith. You know something, believe it, and naturally live according to it.
5 Year Old Vs Police Chief
Let's consider another example I discussed in our last Bible study this week. Imagine you're in your living room, watching me teach the Word of God on YouTube. Suddenly, your five-year-old daughter rushes in and exclaims, "Daddy, an airplane is going to crash on our roof!" How would you react?
  • You would most likely smile, ask her how she knows this, and then dismiss her warning as unreliable because of her young age.
  • We typically do not take such claims seriously when they come from a child, recognizing that the source isn't dependable.
https://preview.redd.it/qyamgrgkb1wc1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=118a3c092ff777d0f033a6aad156b0ad98ef0573
Now, imagine a different scenario in which it's not your child but the police chief of your city—a person you know and trust—who calls and urgently tells you to evacuate your home because an airplane is about to crash on it. What would you do then? You'd probably leave your house immediately. Why? because you trust the police chief's reliability and would act on his warning without hesitation.
Brethren, this is essentially what faith is. It is the way we act based on the things we believe.
  • You will not try to prove to the police chief that you believe him. There is no need.
  • You do not try to “confess your faith.” No. If you believe him, you will immediately act on it and leave your home.
  • Your actions will speak louder than anything you say to tell him you believe what he says to you.
Faith is seen by what we do or say. The best proof of what you truly believe is how you act and behave. Faith is visible,
And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. (Luke 5:20, KJV)

The Principle of Faith and Faith in Christ

What distinguishes the principle of faith we use in everyday life from the faith we have in Christ?
Even Atheist Believe!
Every person, whether Christian or not, has the capacity to believe. For instance, atheists exercise this principle of faith, too—they believe there is no God and thus reject Christ based on this gravely mistaken belief.
However, here’s the point: This belief shapes their lives profoundly, underscoring the fact that people can believe what is wrong, leading them astray. In fact, God calls the atheist a fool for this reason,
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, There is none that doeth good." (Psalm 14:1, KJV).
Thus, even those who deny God's existence are inadvertently following a principle of faith by adhering to their beliefs.
https://preview.redd.it/4wey44qob1wc1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=f8fdfd267d3dfdbb61bfa8334e83e390abb2e967

What About Demons?
Moreover, Scripture tells us that even demons believe in God’s existence:
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." (James 2:19, KJV).
This highlights that mere belief in existence is not sufficient for saving faith.
The critical difference between the everyday principle of faith and the faith in Christ lies in the specifics of what is believed and how it directs our lives.
  • Faith in Christ isn’t just a general belief like thinking a suitor is unkind or fearing an imminent disaster based on rumors.
  • Rather, it is specifically trusting and acting on God’s Word.
A second vital aspect of faith in Christ is that it requires the Holy Spirit for a person to accept divine truths. The natural consequence of the Fall makes God’s truths seem foolish to an unaided mind. Only through the Holy Spirit can we genuinely comprehend and embrace the things of God.
No one can say 'Jesus is Lord' except by the Holy Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:3, KJV).
This underscores the essential role of the Holy Spirit in transforming our understanding and acceptance of God's truth, moving us beyond simple human belief into a profound, spiritually enabled faith.

What Really is Faith?

To distill the essence of faith without delving too deeply into technicalities, consider the simple illustrations mentioned earlier.
Faith is essentially how you act based on the Word of God you believe to be true. It comprises two main aspects:
Believing
Faith starts with accepting the Word of God as true. Today, a significant problem with faith is that while many can verbally speak to mountains of disease, demons, or poverty to move, very few deeply believe in their heart that such commands will work.
  • Anyone can “act faith” but not everyone has faith in their hearts that support those actions. I have extensively taught about believing, and if you struggle with faith, I strongly encourage you to read these articles and watch the sermons I've shared.
  • As always, these resources are free—you only need to pay the price of your time and effort to grow spiritually.
Acting
The core of this newsletter is about how your beliefs manifest naturally in your actions. You don’t need to force or "act out" your faith.
  • For example, Judas, despite being one of the apostles for three years, did not truly believe Jesus was the Messiah. His actions, ultimately betraying Jesus, revealed his true beliefs(John 6:64).
  • No Jew in their right mind would betray the Messiah that the entire Jewish nation has been waiting for centuries. Also, if people genuinely believed in hell, their lifestyles would immediately reflect that belief. Thus, what we believe naturally influences our actions.
Faith is a lifestyle—our actions and words are governed by what we are persuaded above, as encapsulated in Hebrews 11:1, KJV:
"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Invest in Your Faith

Investing in your faith is one of the most crucial commitments you can make in Christianity. I once believed I was a man of faith until the Holy Spirit revealed how little I truly accepted many things I thought I believed.
You might be surprised to find that your heart has not truly embraced many truths of the Scriptures you assumed you believed. For instance, if you believe you can command a demon and it will obey, that belief will transform how you live. Imagine if Christians truly believe that, it will change how we act!
Here are my recommendations for boosting your faith:
  1. Read thoroughly: Read, watch, and imbibe every article or sermon on believing and faith. The Lord, by His Spirit, has given me the wisdom to understand His Will, as you can see from this newsletter, and you can partake of that grace by simply learning what the Lord has shown me.
  2. Commit to the Word: Faith is nurtured in our hearts by the Holy Spirit using the Word of God as His primary tool(Romans 10:17). As you allow God’s Word to take root in your heart, accepting its truths becomes increasingly natural.
  3. Maintain close communion with the Holy Spirit: The closer you are to the Holy Spirit, the easier faith becomes. My experience shows that when my prayer life declines, so does my faith. Stay close to the Spirit, and you will find your faith not only grows but flourishes.
I pray that as you read this newsletter, something will ignite in your spirit to lead you into a new dimension of faith. And remember, as your faith comes alive, you will begin to see its impact in your health, family, finances, and ministry. This is why investing in your faith is so crucial.

2024.05.14 15:59 Slopp_12 Ruling Question regarding "Gill Lapis, Conqueror of Attoractia"

Hey, I just started building a Deck with "Gill Lapis, Conqueror of Attoractia" as the Ruler. But now I am wondering how his Ruler Side 0: ability actually works.
0: If target non-magic stone card your opponent controls would be put into a graveyard this turn, remove it from the game instead. Play this ability only during your turn and only once per turn.
The thing that confuses me is the "non-magic stone card your opponent controls"-part. Its obviously so you can target Addition, Resonator, Regalia and all that stuff, because they are physical cards on the field. But what about a Spell on the Chase?
  1. Chase Area 312.1. The zone played cards and abilities are placed in until they're resolved. 312.2. There is only one chase area, it i s public and order of the cards is managed. 312.3. While a card is placed in chase area, it i s called "spell". If spells, abilities or effects refer to a "spell" without specific zone, they refer cards on chase area.
From my understanding a Card on the Chase is called a Spell. They are called Spells, but are they also still cards? And would a spell cast by my opponent on my turn, be a card on the chase called a Spell that he/she controls?
So the Question would be: Can I use Gill's ability to target a Spell thats currently on the Chase, so that this spell/card will then go to the removed zone after it resolves?
I'll be really thankful for every reply that will quench my thirst for knowledge.

2024.05.14 15:56 tedsinklaw The New South Carolina Squat Law Grace Period Ends

Source: https://www.tedlaw.com/south-carolina-squat-law-grace-period-ends/

New Law Takes Effect after Grace Period

On Friday, May 10, the grace period for a new law passed back in November of 2023 expired. Now, the new law – known as the “Carolina Squat” law – will take effect, and consequently, many drivers across the State of South Carolina will be impacted. The new Carolina Squat law makes it illegal for cars to be “squatted,” which means an imbalance in height between the front fender and rear fender. A car is considered squatted when the front fender is raised four inches higher than the rear fender; the law also forbids pickup trucks from raising their front fender six inches or higher, regardless of whether the rear fender is adjusted evenly. Again, this law was passed back in November of last year, but lawmakers gave South Carolinians a 6 month “grace period” to comply. Now that the grace period is over, auto shops around the state are receiving squat adjustment requests on a frequent basis.

The Appeal & Risks of Squatted Vehicles

The appeal of squatting is apparently the visual distinctiveness which the process gives to a car, but lawmakers passed the recent squat law because squatting seems to interfere with safety. When cars are squatted, this limits the vision of the driver, and this obviously increases the risks of collisions. Furthermore, not only is squatting risky, it also causes damage to the vehicle in unexpected ways; a squatted car isn’t able to pump fluid as efficiently as it normally would, and this ultimately impacts the power train. This new law can accurately be perceived as an attempt by lawmakers to promote greater overall safety on the road. As we know full well here at the Ted Law Firm, car collisions are a major problem in South Carolina, as the numbers speak for themselves. With this new squat law, the roads will hopefully be improved by at least a bit.

Fixing Squatted Vehicles in South Carolina

The average cost to fix a squatted car is approximately $700, although the precise cost of a given car will depend on the specifics of the case. The number of squatted vehicles in South Carolina is not currently known, but the number is suspected to be quite substantial. Part of the reason for this high number of cases is due to the ease by which squatting can be achieved. According to auto mechanics, the process of raising the front fender in this manner is evidently quite simple, particularly in comparison to other auto body adjustments. Likewise, the process for correcting squatted cars is apparently also simple.

Penalties for Carolina Squat Law Violations

The new Carolina Squat law provides the following penalties for violations: a first offense will lead to a $100 fine, a second offense will lead to a $200 fine, and a third offense will lead to a $300 fine the loss of one’s driving privilege for one year. Given these penalties, auto shops should continue to see a steady stream of calls to fix squatting into the future.

2024.05.14 15:56 blueberrycutiepie I'm not sure if I (25F) should initiate again or wait for him (28M) to?

I (25F) matched with this guy (28M) on a dating app in January. He lives a few states away from me, it's a 2-3 hour plane ride. We were chatting here and there for a month and in February, I told him I wanted to meet him in the middle and we chose a spot. He said he was down and I said we should call first to talk about details. I sort of initiated the call a week later and we talked about flights and accomodations and I asked him when he wanted to actually book stuff and he said we could the next weekend. We said we would do the end of March.
The next weekend rolls around and I'm making casual chit-chat with him and he leaves me on read. I reach out again a couple weeks later and we talk again and he doesn't bring up booking tickets or the plans. Then April rolls around and he makes a comment about something we can do when we meet. I ask him if he's still down to and he says he is and that we could do late April. Around the first week of April, he leaves me on read and I sent him an iMessage game (for fun) and he doesn't reply to that either (he usually does).
At this point, I'm annoyed because, even though the plans weren't concrete/finalized, don't say things if you can't follow through. So I blocked him on social media and deleted his number. He reached out and said hi to me last week so we've been chatting again but neither of us brought up the potential plans we made to meet. Should I ask him if he still wants to sometime or wait for him to bring it up at this point?

Archaeotherium, the King of the White River Badlands
Art by Bob Nicholls
Nowadays, when we envision the words “prey,” among modern mammalian fauna, few taxa come to mind as quickly as the hoofed mammals, better known as the ungulates. Indeed, for the better part of their entire evolutionary history, the ungulates have become entirely indistinguishable from the term “prey.” Across their two major modern branches, the artiodactyls (the “even-toed ungulates,” such as bovids, pigs, deer, hippos and giraffes) and the perissodactyls (the “odd-toed ungulates,” including horses, rhinos and tapir), the ungulates too have created an empire spanning nearly every continent, establishing themselves as the the dominant herbivores throughout their entire range. However, as a price for such success, their lot as herbivores have forced them into an unenviable position: being the food for the predators. Indeed, throughout the diets of most modern predators, ungulates make up the majority, if not the entirety, of their diet, becoming their counterparts in this evolutionary dance of theirs. They have become the lamb to their wolf, the zebra to their lion, the stag to their tiger. If there is a predator in need of lunch, chances are that there is an ungulate there to provide it. Of course, such a dynamic is not necessarily a recent innovation. For the last 15-20 million years, across much of the world, both new and old, the ungulates have served as prey for these predators through it all. Over the course of whole epochs, these two groups have played into these roles for millions of years, coevolving with each other in an eons-long game of cat-and-mouse. The shoes they fill are not new, but have existed for ages, and within their niches they have cultivated their roles to perfection. Indeed, with such a tenured history, it seems hardly surprising the ungulates are wholly inseparable from the terms “prey,” itself.
However, while this is the case now, as it has been for the last 15-20 million years, go back far enough, and we see that this dynamic is not as set in stone as we would think. Indeed, back during the Eocene and Oligocene, during the very earliest days of age of mammals, things were very different for the ungulates. While today they are considered little more than food for modern predators, during these olden days, the ungulates weren’t quite so benign. In fact, far from being fodder for top predators, the ungulates had turned the tables, instead becoming top predators themselves. Indeed, though nearly unheard of today, throughout much of the Eocene and Oligocene, carnivorous ungulates thrived in abundance, developing specializations for catching large prey and establishing themselves as top predators that competed alongside the more traditional carnivores, and even dominating them in some instances. Given such success, it’s no wonder that multiple such clades had arisen during this time. Such predators included the arctocyonids, a lineage of (ironically) hoof-less ungulates with large jaws and sharp teeth for capturing large prey. There were also the mesonychians, a lineage of dog-like ungulates with massive skulls and jaws that allowed them to reign as the top predator across much of the Eocene.
However, among these various lineages, one stands stands out among the rest, by far. Arising during the Eocene, this lineage, though superficially resembling modern pigs, hailed from one an ancient lineage of artiodactyls far removed from swine or most other ungulates in general, with few close relatives alive today. Through perhaps not the most predatory of the bunch, it was among the most formidable, as their superficially pig-like appearance came with giant predatory jaws and teeth unlike anything from the modern era. And of course, as if all of that wasn’t enough, this lineage also went on to earn arguably one of the most badass nicknames of any lineage of mammals, period. These predators, of course, were the entelodonts, a.k.a the “hell-pigs.” More so than any other predatory ungulate lineage, these formidable ungulates were the ones to turn the current paradigm upside down, becoming some of the largest and most dominant carnivores in their landscape, even with (and often in spite of) the presence of more traditional predators. Through impressive size, fearsome teeth and sheer tenacity, these animals became the top dogs of their time, ruling as behemoth-kings of their Paleogene kingdoms, domineering all comers, and throughout the ranks, one entelodont in particular demonstrated such dominance the best. Though not the largest or most powerful of their kind, it is one of the most iconic, being among the most well-known members of its lineage to date. Moreover, this enteledont also has some of the most complete life histories ever seen out of this clade, with its brutality and predatory prowess being displayed in the fossil record in a way seen in no other member of its kind. More than anything else, however, it was this predator that best turned the notion of “ungulates being prey” on its head, living in an environment that bore some of the largest carnivoran hypercarnivores to date and still reigning as the undisputed top predator of its domain. This fearsome beast was none other than Archaeotherium, icon of the entelodonts, terror of the Oligocene American west and undisputed king of the White River badlands.
The rise of Archaeotherium (and of entelodonts in general) is closely tied to the ascendancy of carnivorous ungulates as a whole, one of the earliest evolutionary success stories of the entire Cenozoic. Having become their own derived clade since the late Cretaceous, the ungulates were remarkably successful during the early Paleogene, as they were among the first mammalian clades to reach large sizes during those early days after the non-avian dinosaurs had gone extinct. As such, it was with incredible swiftness that, as the Paleogene progressed, the ungulates swooped upon the various niches left empty by the K-Pg mass extinction that killed the dinosaurs. This of course included the herbivorous niches we would know them for today, but this also included other, much more carnivore roles. Indeed, early on during the Paleogene, it was the ungulates that first seized the roles of large mammalian predators, becoming some the earliest large mammalian carnivores to ever live, well before even the carnivorans. Such predators included the arctocyonids, a lineage of vaguely dog-like, hoof-less ungulates with robust jaws and sharpened teeth that acted as some of earliest large carnivores of the Paleocene, with genera such as Arctocyon mumak getting up to the size of big cats. Even more prolific were the mesonychids. More so than what pretty much any other lineage of predator, it was the mesonychids that would stand out as the earliest dominant predators of the early Cenozoic. Growing up to the size of bears and with enormous, bone-crushing jaws, the mesonychids were among the most powerful and successful predators on the market at that time, with a near-global range and being capable of subjugating just about any other predator in their environments. Indeed, they, along with other carnivorous ungulates (as well as ungulates in general), were experiencing a golden age during this time, easily being the most prolific predators of the age. Given such prevalence, it should be no surprise that there would be yet another lineage of predatory ungulates would throw their hat into the ring, and by early Eocene, that contender would none other than the entelodonts.
The very first entelodonts had arisen from artiodactyl ancestors during the Eocene epoch, at a time when artiodactyls were far more diverse and bizarre than they are now. Through today known from their modern herbivorous representatives such as bovines, deer, and antelope, during the Paleocene and Eocene, the artiodacyls, as with most ungulates of that time, were stronger and far more predaceous, particularly when it came to one such clade of artiodactyls, the cetacodontomorphs. Only known today from hippos and another group of artiodactyls (one which will become relevant later), the cetacodontomorphs emerged out of Asia around 55 million years ago, at around the same time that artiodactyls themselves had made their debut. These animals included the first truly predatory artiodactyls, with many of them possessing large skulls with powerful jaws and sharp, predatory teeth. Among their ranks included animals as puny as Indohyus, a piscivorous artiodactyl the size of a cat, to as formidable as Andrewsarchus, a giant, bison-sized predator often touted as one of the largest predatory mammals to ever live. Given such a predatory disposition, it wouldn’t be long until this clade produced a lineage of truly diverse, truly successful predators, and by around 40 million years ago, that is exactly what they did, as it was at that time that the entelodonts themselves first emerged. From their Asian homeland, the entelodonts spread across the world, spreading through not only most of Eurasia but also colonizing North America as well, with genera such as Brachyhyops being found across both continents. Here, in this North American frontier, the entelodonts began to diversify further, turning into their most successful and formidable forms yet, and it was around the late Eocene and early Oligocene that Archaeotherium itself had entered the scene.
Just from a passing glance at Archaeotherium, it is clear how exactly it (as well as the other entelodonts) earned the nickname of “hell-pigs.” It was a bruiser for starters; its body bore a robust, pig-like physique, with prominent neural spines and their associated musculature forming a hump around the shoulder region, similar to the hump of a bison. With such a bulky physique came with it impressive size; the average A. mortoni had a head-body length of roughly 1.6-2.0 m (5.3-6.6 ft), a shoulder height of 1.2 m (4 ft) and a body mass of around 180 kg (396 lb) in weight (Boardman & Secord, 2013; (Joeckel, 1990). At such sizes, an adult Archaeotherium the size of a large male black bear. However, they had the potential to get even bigger. While most Archaeotherium specimens were around the size described above, a select few specimens, labeled under the synonymous genus “Megachoerus,” are found to be much larger, with skulls getting up to 66% longer than average A. mortoni specimens (Foss, 2001; Joeckel, 1990). At such sizes and using isometric scaling, such massive Archaeotherium specimens would attained body lengths over 2.5 m (8.2 ft) and would have reached weighs well over 500 kg (1100 lb), or as big as a mature male polar bear. Indeed, at such sizes, it is already abundantly evident that Archaeotherium is a force to be recorded with.
However, there was more to these formidable animals than sheer size alone. Behind all that bulk was an astoundingly swift and graceful predator, especially in terms of locomotion. Indeed, the hoofed feet of Archaeotherium, along with other entelodonts, sported several adaptations that gave it incredible locomotive efficiency, essentially turning it into a speed demon of the badlands. Such adaptations include longer distal leg elements (e.g. the radius and tibia) than their proximal counterparts (e.g. the humerus and femur), fusion of the radius and ulna for increased running efficiency, the loss of the clavicle (collar-bone) to allow for greater leg length, the loss of the acromion to enhance leg movement along the fore-and-aft plane, the loss of digits to reduce the mass of the forelimb, the fusion of the ectocuneiform and the mesocuneiform wrist-bones, among many other such traits (Theodore, 1996) . Perhaps most significant of these adaptations is the evolution of the “double-pulley astragalus (ankle-bone),” a specialized modification of the ankle that, while restricting rotation and side-to-side movement at the ankle-joint, allows for greater rotation in the fore-and-aft direction, thus allowing for more more powerful propulsion from the limbs, faster extension and retraction of the limbs and overall greater locomotive efficiency (Foss, 2001). Of course, such a trait was not only found in entelodonts but in artiodactyls as a whole, likely being a response to predatory pressures from incumbent predatory clades arising at the same time as the artiodactyls (Foss, 2001). However, in the case of the entelodonts, such adaptations were not used for merely escaping predators. Rather, they were used to for another, much more lethal effect…
Such notions are further reinforced by the entelodonts most formidable aspect, none either than their fearsome jaws, and in this respect, Archaeotherium excelled. Both for its size and in general, the head of Archaeotherium was massive, measuring 40-50 cm (1.3-1.6 ft) in length among average A. mortoni specimens, to up to 78 cm (~2.6 ft) in the larger “Megachoerus” specimens (Joeckel, 1990). Such massive skulls were supported and supplemented by equally massive neck muscles and ligaments, which attached to massive neural spines on the anterior thoracic vertebrae akin to a bisons hump as well as to the sternum, allowing Archaeotherium to keep its head aloft despite the skulls massive size (Effinger, 1998). Of course, with such a massive skull, it should come as no surprise that such skulls housed exceptionally formidable jaws as well, and indeed, the bite of Archaeotherium was an especially deadly one. Its zygomatic arches (cheek-bones) and its temporal fossa were enlarged and expanded, indicative of massive temporalis muscles that afforded Archaeotherium astoundingly powerful bites (Joeckel, 1990). This is further augmented by Archaeotherium’s massive jugal flanges (bony projections of the cheek), which supported powerful masseter muscles which enhanced chewing and mastication, as well as an enlarged postorbital bar that reinforced the skull against torsional stresses (Foss, 2001). Last but not least, powerful jaws are supplemented by an enlarged gape, facilitated by a low coronoid process and enlarged posterior mandibular tubercles (bony projections originating from the lower jaw), which provided an insertion site for sternum-to-mandible jaw abduction muscles, allowing for a more forceful opening of the jaw (Foss, 2001). All together, such traits suggest a massive and incredibly fearsome bite, perhaps the most formidable of any animal in its environment.
Of course, none of such traits are especially indicative of a predatory lifestyle. Indeed, many modern non-predatory ungulates, like hippos, pigs and peccaries, also possess large, formidable skulls and jaws. However, in peeling back the layers, it is found there was more to the skull of Archaeotherium that lies in store. Indeed, when inspecting the animal closely, a unique mosaic of features is revealed; traits that make it out to be much more lethal than the average artiodactyl. On one hand, Archaeotherium possessed many traits similar to those of herbivores animals, as is expected of ungulates. For instance, its jaw musculature that allowed the lower jaw of Archaeotherium a full side-to-side chewing motion as in herbivores (whereas most carnivores can only move their lower jaw up and down)(Effinger, 1998). On the other hand, Archaeotherium wielded many other traits far more lethal in their morphology, less akin to a herbivore and far more akin to a bonafide predator. For instance, the aforementioned enlarged gape of Archaeotherium is a bizarre trait on a supposed herbivore, as such animals do not need large gapes to eat vegetation and thus have smaller, more restricted gapes. Conversely, many predatory lineages have comparatively large gapes, as larger gapes allow for the the jaws to grab on to more effectively larger objects, namely large prey animals (Joeckel, 1990).
Such a juxtaposition, however, is most evident when discussing the real killing instruments of Archaeotherium — the teeth. More so than any facet of this animal, the teeth of Archaeotherium are the real stars of the show, showing both how alike it was compared to its herbivores counterparts and more importantly, how it couldn’t be more different. For instance, the molars of Archaeotherium were quite similar to modern herbivores ungulates, in that they were robust, bunodont, and were designed for crushing and grinding, similar in form and function to modern ungulates like peccaries (Joeckel, 1990). However, while the molars give the impression that Archaeotherium was a herbivore, the other teeth tell a very different story. The incisors, for example, were enlarged, sharpened, and fully interlocked (as opposed to the flat-topped incisors seen in herbivores ungulates), creating an incisor array that was seemingly ill-suited for cropping vegetation and much more adept at for gripping, puncturing and cutting (Joeckel, 1990). Even more formidable were the canines. Like the modern pigs from which entelodonts derived their nicknames, the canines of Archaeotherium were sharp and enlarged to form prominent tusk-like teeth, but unlike pigs, they were rounded in cross-section (similar to modern carnivores like big cats, indicating more durable canines that can absorb and resist torsional forces, such as those from struggling prey) and were serrated to form a distinct cutting edge (Effinger, 1998; Joeckel, 1990; Ruff & Van Valkenburgh, 1987). These canines, along with the incisors, interlock to stabilize the jaws while biting and dismantling in a carnivore-like fashion. More strikingly, the canines also seem to act as “occlusal guides,” wherein the canines help align the movement and position of the rear teeth as they come together, allowing for a more efficient shearing action by the rear teeth. This function is seen most prevalently modern carnivores mammals, and is evidenced by the canine tooth-wear, which is also analogous to modern predators like bears and canids (Joeckel, 1990). Indeed, going off such teeth alone, it is clear that Archaeotherium is far more predatory than expected of an ungulate. However, the real stars of the show, the teeth that truly betray the predatory nature of these ungulates, are the premolars. Perhaps the most carnivore-like teeth in the entelodont’s entire tooth row, the premolars of Archaeotherium, particularly the anterior premolars, are laterally compressed, somewhat conical in shape, and are weakly serrated to bear a cutting edge, giving them a somewhat carnivorous form and function of shearing and slicing (Effinger, 1998). Most strikingly of all, the premolars of Archaeotherium bear unique features similar not to modern herbivores, but to durophagous carnivores like hyenas, particularly apical wear patterns, highly thickened enamel, “zigzag-shaped” enamel prism layers (Hunter-Schraeger bands) on the premolars which is also seen in osteophagous animals like hyenas, and an interlocking premolar interface wherein linear objects (such as bones) inserted into jaws from the side would be pinned between the premolars and crushed (Foss, 2001). Taken together, these features do not suggest a diet of grass or vegetation like other ungulates. Rather, they suggest a far more violent diet, one including flesh as well as hard, durable foods, particularly bone. All in all, the evidence is clear. Archaeotherium and other entelodonts, unlike the rest of their artiodactyl kin, were not the passive herbivores as we envision ungulates today. Rather, they were willing, unrepentant meat-eaters that had a taste for flesh as well as foliage.
Of course, even with such lines of evidence, its hard to conclude that Archaeotherium was a true predator. After all, its wide gape and durophagous teeth could have just as easily been used for scavenging or even to eat tough plant matter such as seeds or nuts, as in peccaries and pigs, which themselves share many of the same adaptations as Archaeotherium, include the more carnivorous ones (e.g. the wide gape, using the canines as an occlusal guide, etc.). How exactly do we know that these things were veritable predators and not pretenders to the title. To this end, there is yet one last piece of evidence, one that puts on full display the predatory prowess of Archaeotherium —** evidence of a kill itself. Found within oligocene-aged sediment in what is now Wyoming, a collection of various fossil remains was found, each belonging to the ancient sheep-sized camel Poebrotherium, with many of the skeletal remains being disarticulated and even missing whole hindlimbs or even entire rear halves of their body. Tellingly, many of the remains bear extensive bite marks and puncture wounds across their surface. Upon close examination, the spacing and size of the punctures leave only one culprit: Archaeotherium. Of course, such an event could still have been scavenging; the entelodonts were consuming the remains of already dead, decomposed camels, explaining the bite marks. What was far more telling, however, was where the bite marks were found. In addition bite marks being found on the torso and lumbar regions of the camels, various puncture wounds were found on the skull and neck, which were otherwise uneaten. Scavengers rarely feast on the head to begin with; there is very little worthwhile meat on it besides the brain, cheek-muscles and eyes, and even if they did feed on the skull and neck, they would still eat it wholesale, not merely bite it and then leave it otherwise untouched. Indeed, it was clear that this was no mere scavenging event. Rather than merely consuming these camels, **Archaeotherium was actively preying upon and killing them, dispatching them via a crushing bite to the skull or neck before dismembering and even bisecting the hapless camels with their powerful jaws to preferentially feast on their hindquarters (likely by swallowing the hindquarters whole, as the pelvis of Poebrotherium was coincidentally the perfect width for Archaeotherium to devour whole), eventually discarding the leftovers in meat caches for later consumption (Sundell, 1999). With this finding, such a feat of brutality leaves no doubt in ones mind as to what the true nature of Archaeotherium was. This was no herbivore, nor was it a simple scavenger. This was an active, rapacious predator, the most powerful in its entire ecosystem.
Indeed, with such brutal evidence of predation frozen in time, combined with various dental, cranial, and post cranial adaptations of this formidable animal, it’s possible to paint a picture of how this formidable creature lived. Though an omnivore by trade, willing and able to feast on plant matter such as grass, roots and tubers, Archaeotherium was also a wanton predator that took just about any prey it wanted. Upon detecting its prey, it approached its vicim from ambush before launching itself at blazing speed. From there, its cursorial, hoofed legs, used by other ungulates for escape predation, were here employed to capture prey, carrying it at great speeds as it caught up to its quarry. Having closed the distance with its target, it was then that the entelodont brought its jaws to bear, grabbing hold of the victim with powerful jaws and gripping teeth to bring it to a screeching halt. If the victim is lucky, Archaeotherium will then kill it quickly with a crushing bite to the skull or neck, puncturing the brain or spinal cord and killing its target instantly. If not, the victim is eaten alive, torn apart while it’s still kicking, as modern boars will do today. In any case, incapacitated prey are subsequently dismantled, with the entelodont using its entire head and heavily-muscled necks to bite into and pull apart its victim in devastating “puncture-and pull’ bites (Foss, 2001). Prey would then finally be consumed starting at the hindquarters, with not even the bones of its prey being spared. Such brutality, though far from clean, drove home a singular truth: that during this time, ungulates were not just prey, that they were not the mere “predator-fodder” we know them as today. rather, they themselves were the predators themselves, dominating as superb hunters within their domain and even suppressing clades we know as predators today, least of all the carnivorans. Indeed, during this point in time, the age of the carnivorous ungulates had hit their stride, and more specifically, the age of entelodonts had begun.
Of course, more so than any other ettelodont, Archaeotherium took to this new age with gusto. Archaeotherium lived from 35-28 million years ago during the late Eocene and early Oligocene in a locality known today as the White River Badlands, a fossil locality nestled along the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Though a chalky, barren landscape today, during the time of Archaeotherium, the White River Badlands was a swamp-like floodplain crisscrossed with rivers and interspersed with by a mosaic of forests concentrated around waterways, open woodlands and open plains. As with most ecosystems with such a lush disposition, this locale teemed with life, with ancient hornless rhinos, small horse-like hyracodonts and early camels roaming the open habitats while giant brontotheres, small early horses and strange, sheep-like ungulates called merycoidodonts (also known as “oreodonts”) dwelled within the dense forests. Within this locale, Archaeotherium stalked the open woodlands and riparian forests of its domain. Here, it acted as a dominant predator and scavenger across is territory, filling a niche similar to modern grizzly bears but far more predatory. Among its preferred food items would be plant matter such as roots, foliage and nuts, but also meat in the form of carrion or freshly caught prey. In this respect, smaller ungulates such as the fleet-footed camel Poebrotherium, a known prey item of Archaeotherium, would have made a for choice prey, as its small size would make it easy for Archaeotherium to dispatch with its powerful jaws, while the entelodonts swift legs gave it the speed necessary to keep pace with its agile prey.
However, the entelodont didn’t have such a feast all to itself. Just as the badlands teemed with herbivores, so too did it teem with rival predators. Among their ranks included fearsome predators such as Hyaenodon, a powerful, vaguely dog-like predator up to the size of wolves (as in H. horridus) or even lions (as in the Eocene-aged H. megaloides, which was replaced by H. horridus during the Oligocene). Armed with a massive head, fierce jaws and a set of knife-like teeth that could cut down even large prey in seconds, these were some of the most formidable predators on the landscape. There were also the nimravids, cat-like carnivorans that bore saber-teeth to kill large prey in seconds, and included the likes of the lynx-sized Dinictis, the leopard-sized Hoplophoneus and even the jaguar-sized Eusmilus. Furthermore, there were amphicyonids, better known as the bear-dogs. Though known from much larger forms later on in their existence, during the late Eocene and Oligocene, they were much smaller and acted as the “canid-analogues” of the ecosystem, filling a role similar to wolves or coyotes. Last but not least, there were the bathornithid birds, huge cariamiform birds related to modern seriemas but much larger, which filled a niche similar to modern seriemas or secretary birds, albeit on a much larger scale. Given such competition, it would seem that Archaeotherium would have its hands full. However, things are not as they appear. For starters, habitat differences would mitigate high amounts of competition, as both Hyaenodon and the various nimravids occupy more specialized ecological roles (being a plains-specialist and forest-specialist, respectively) than did Archaeotherium, providing a buffer to stave off competition: More importantly, however, none of the aforementioned predators were simply big enough to take Archaeotherium on. During the roughly 7 million years existence of Archaeotherium, the only carnivore that matched it in size was H. megaloides, and even that would have an only applied to average A. mortoni individuals, not to the much larger, bison-sized “Megachoerus” individuals. The next largest predator at that point would be the jaguars-sized Eusmilus (specifically E. adelos) which would have only been a bit more than half the size of even an average A. mortoni. Besides that, virtually every other predator on the landscape was simply outclassed by the much larger entelodont in terms of size and brute strength. As such, within its domain, Archaeotherium had total, unquestioned authority, dominating the other predators in the landscape and likely stealing their kills as well. In fact, just about the only threat Archaeotherium had was other Archaeotherium, as fossil bite marks suggest that this animal regularly and fraglantly engaged in intraspecific combat, usually through face-biting and possibly even jaw-wrestling (Effinger, 1998; Tanke & Currie, 1998). Nevertheless, it was clear that Archaeotherium was the undisputed king of the badlands; in a landscape of hyaenodonts and carnivorans galore, it was a hoofed ungulate that reigned supreme.
However, such a reign would not last. As the Eocene transitioned into the Eocene, the planet underwent an abrupt cooling and drying phase known as Eocene-Oligocene Transition or more simply the Grande Coupure. This change in climate would eliminate the sprawling wetlands and river systems that Archaeotherium had been depending on, gradually replacing it with drier and more open habitats. To its credit, Archaeotherium did manage to hang on, persisting well after the Grand-Coupure had taken place, but in the end the damage had been done; Archaeotherium was a dead-man-walking. Eventually, by around 28 million years ago, Archaeotherium would go extinct, perishing due to this change in global climate (Gillham, 2019). Entelodonts as a whole would persist into the Miocene, producing some of their largest forms ever known in the form of the bison-sized Daeodon (which was itself even more carnivorous than Archaeotherium), however they too would meet the same fate as their earlier cousins. By around 15-20 million years ago, entelodonts as a whole would go extinct. However, while the entelodonts may have perished, this was not the end of carnivorous ungulates as a whole. Recall that the cetacodontomorphs, the lineage of artiodactyls that produced the entelodonts, left behind two living descendants. The first among them were the hippos, themselves fairly frequent herbivores. The second of such lineage, however, was a different story. Emerging out of South Asia, this lineage of piscivorous cetacodontomorphs, in a an attempt to further specialize for the fish-hunting lifestyle, began to delve further and further into the water, becoming more and more aquatic and the millennia passed by. At a certain point, these carnivorous artiodactlys had become something completely unrecognizable from their original hoofed forms. Their skin became hairless and their bodies became streamlined for life in water. Their hoofed limbs grew into giant flippers for steering in the water and their previously tiny tails became massive and sported giant tail flukes for aquatic propulsion. Their noses even moved to the tip of their head, becoming a blowhole that would be signature to this clade as a whole. Indeed, this clade was none other than the modern whales, themselves derived, carnivorous ungulates that had specialized for a life in the water, and in doing so, became the some of the most dominant aquatic predators across the globe for millions of years. Indeed, though long gone, the legacy of the entelodonts and of predatory ungulates as a whole, a legacy Archaeotherium itself had helped foster, lives on in these paragons of predatory prowess, showing that the ungulates are more than just the mere “prey” that they are often made out to be. Moreover, given the success that carnivorous ungulates had enjoyed in the past and given how modern omnivorous ungulates like boar dabble in predation themselves, perhaps, in the distant future, this planet may see the rise of carnivorous ungulates once again, following in the footsteps left behind by Archaeotherium and the other predatory ungulates all those millions of years ago.

2024.05.14 15:55 Elfraepr Wife cheated, got back together, keep catching her. What do I do?

I’ve been with my wife for 12 years, married 10. September last year I found out that she had been cheating on me most of the time.
At first I freaked out, moved her and the child, I don’t know if they’re mine out, at her will. Her reason was she was addicted to the validation and appreciation from the other guys.
At the beginning of the year we decided to try to work things out. One day, after constant insistence that we wouldn’t be together again, she called me and told me she’d Take me back. Stipulation was that I had to help her foster a little girl that ended up being her “not boyfriend’s” daughter.
I was so excited and happy that I agreed. Long story short the little girl was doing bad things with our son who was the same age. I wasn’t ok with it and demanded that we stop fostering the little girl.
After she saw and got video proof my wife decided to stop the fostering. I feel bad for the little girl but I’m not putting my child at risk for her. My wife started half counseling for herself shortly after and things seemed ok.
Then about two months later ( 2 weeks ago) I looked at her phone and found that she was talking and sending pictures with another guy that morning, and going back found any pic or video she sent me had been sent to other guys first. This really hurt me. And when I tried to bring it up she acted as if I should just be ok with it since she didn’t meetup with him and doing anything.
Now today I again looked at her phone and saw a guy messaging her and instead of blocking them or not responding she played like there wasn’t anything going on with us or her. Essentially leaving things open for more.
I’ve been losing sleep on this and have become extremely paranoid and, due to a lack of sleep and time to process, angry. What should I do? Do I stay with her and know that I’ll always have to keep tabs to make sure she isn’t cheating? Or should I leave and deal with being lonely and missing her?

2024.05.14 15:55 cookiesandbraids How do you get your narc family to leave you alone

I left home 16 years ago because of my toxic family, however a few years ago I thought my narcissist mom changed. She was saying all the right things and claiming she’s been educating herself on parenting. She slowly talked me into moving back to my hometown. For the last few months myself and family have been staying with her until we find our own place and it’s been absolute hell. My mom and sibling are both demon narcs. Were attacked on the daily for merely existing, called disrespectful if we dare open our mouth to defend ourselves. Our kids emotions are mocked, it turns into us being “too sensitive” and brain washing our kids to “hate them” when we defend them. They both play victim when we ignore them and tell me they’re “scared” I’ll take my kids away from them, even though they pay little attention to them. We recently found a house and will hopefully close in the next month and a half or so and I really don’t want contact with them, but knowing my mom she’s psycho and will stalk me(I tried cutting them all off the first time I left when I was young). I really don’t know how to go low contact without them causing problems for myself and family, especially since I unfortunately work in the same business as my sister, while it’s a paranoid idea I’m worried she will mess with my job or throw me under the bus at work to get me fired if I attempt to cut them off. She is my mom’s minion and literally chases after her for approval, it’s pathetic and disgusting. I’m aware with a narc you cannot treat them like a normal human, tbh I’m thinking of just telling them I’m busy all the time and playing dumb….idk Any advice would help.
Edit: please don’t come at me for falling for her tricks, i have a therapist that helped me realize it’s almost a biological need for a person to want to connect with their parents and believe they changed. I realize now I was fooled and know now that narcissists never change.

2024.05.14 15:54 isle_of_enchantment Omfg, how complex are lovebird colour genetics!!!? But I think my girl is a pied dilute, I would love your opinions... pic of her mother at the end.

My girl is DNA confirmed female. Initially I thought she was an Australian cinnamon but her legs and her mothers legs are grey, not flesh toned.
Based on my online research. Dilute looks almost identical to Pallid/Australian cinnamon but they have flesh coloured feet and white nails.
Dilute ( sometimes called Japanese yellow , or Golden cherry) my girl was the only yellow chick from the nest, all the other chicks were dutch blues, the father was a blue series of some sort. I don't know the genders of the siblings except for one Dutch blue brother, DNA confirmed male.
The first 2 photos are my girl. The 3rd is a Dilute. The last, is the mother and my girl in their nest box.
She was quite yellow and had thicker down than her siblings.
The mother looks like a true Dilute, my girl is paler and has patchy speckley colour on her forehead which is mostly yellow, also her rump is not blue...but it is a bluey green and she has a little bit of orange red in her tail feathers and grey areas on her pale almost white flight feathers.
I have never found anything so confusing and unclear as lovebird genetics.
There seems to be A LOT of muddling up of names e.g. Dilute, pallid, Australian cinnamon, opaline, lutino, pastel, lime green opaline....
Thoughts?

2024.05.14 15:53 music_plants_life my old ex is being really weird, what do i do???

when i was in like 7th grade and like 12 years old (im 16 now by the way) i dated this girl on and off
and when i say on and off i mean like 5 times in the span of 2 years (2020-2022) in which they broke up with me and then asked me out again 5 times
back then i was stupid and i went back every time bc i thought we were in love
i wont go into detail about the relationship because 1) i have zero care for how i was treated back then anymore, im over it 2) it was a lot and id be here forever even if i did want to talk about it
but to sum it up all of my friends absolutely hated this person and were mad i was dating them and were over the moon when we broke up for good
after a couple months after our last breakup we did what has always happened and we formed a friendship again, i went shopping with them and got food with them, car rides with them etc
in 2023 i started dating the most amazing man i could have ever asked for, he has truly been a blessing in my life and has really changed my life for the better, and to top it all off he has really shown me how a healthy relationship should be. He has shown me so much kindness and has gone above and beyond for me and i'm so appreciative of him and all his kindness
when me and him started dating i stopped being around this ex
  1. because now that i was dating my amazing boyfriend i realized i used to hang around them in some hope they'd show me that temporary love again (i was very blind and manipulated 👎)
  2. because now that i had realized this and was finally aware of how awful the situation had been and was now completely over them i realized they have always made me somewhat uncomfortable
and 3. who the hell wants to be around there toxic ex?? especially when i’m now in a serious relationship? being around an ex you were long term with is just lowkey weird, if my bf was friends with an ex he was long term with, even if completely over them, i’d be lying if i said it wouldn’t weird me out and make me uncomfortable
anyways, my ex hadn't tried to reach out to me since and they honestly haven't crossed my mind in half a year i thought (and hoped) that was the end of the story
TILL RECENTLY my friend group from one of my school activities is also somewhat friends with my ex, and this has never bugged me, but apparently it has bugged my ex strongly.
because half a year later since i stopped talking to this ex apparently they have started complaining to my friend in this shared group about how they • feel excluded when im around • feel i've been ignoring them • and how they believe this is all my boyfriends fault, and that my boyfriend is "controlling" who i talk to
it escalated because they brought it up to my friend again and said they were going to "confront" me about it?????
this kinda happened a couple months ago when they asked this friend if i dating my boyfriend and trying to get info, but my friend said they should stop being weird. Now they are back at it worse than before??
why can't they just let me go and leave me alone
to be perfectly clear my boyfriend is the furthest thing from controlling, and im very offended that my ex is 1) trying to bad mouth him and 2) painting him as controlling and assuming im only destined for toxic manipulative controlling relationships like the one i was in with them
i know im better than that now and i think its wild they believe there has to be some outside force keeping me from talking to them
the reality is it was completely my own decision to stop talk talking to them, and i’ve been very happy with my decision
my boyfriend doesn’t know about the current situation
i haven’t told him because hearing that someone is painting him to be controlling would break his heart, he is so kind and it’s made me absolutely livid that my ex is so immature they have to shit talk my boyfriend to feel better about themselves
but should i tell him? and besides telling him, what do i do about the situation??
do i confront my ex and tell them to get a grip and stop being an obsessive creep? or is that what they want and should i just not ingage in the situation
PLEASE help me 🙏🙏

2024.05.14 15:52 Narrow-Extension2471 AITA for telling my husband that I think I want a divorce because I hate his boss?

So, in December of '22 we found out we were pregnant and we ended up having to move to his home town because that's the only place we could find an affordable home that was big enough for us. I had zero reason to ever mistrust my husband at this point in our marriage. He was my best friend and we were inseparable. Maybe this is why I feel the way I do now. Because since we moved here, everything is different. Our relationship flopped and now he doesn't even tell me when he's leaving.
When we moved here he ended up getting a job that one of his childhood friends refered him to and he's been there ever since. His boss is a guy maybe 6 years older than him who is a party animal by nature. Has pit fires every weekend and has a social circle of like 200+ people it seems. By a month or two in to us living here, not only did he start asking my husband to tag along with him wherever he went (under the guise of meeting people who can help him "build connections" in their career) but he also started having my husband attend jobs with him that weren't on the books and my husband simply went along with it. He is also a man who pushes you to do shit, even when you say no. There's been multiple times I have physically witnessed my husband saying no and this guy will straight up call him a pussy or simply refuse to take "no" for an answer. Since we moved here, there have been several occurrences where my husband doesn't come home until 2-5am because he was out with his boss at his bosses buddies houses, drinking and whatever else. When he is home now, he's just quiet. I can't even remember the last time we had a meaningful conversation and we have literally almost broken up at least 4 times now, which is NOT normal for us. We could have worked through literally anything prior to us moving here and him becoming interweaved with this boss of his. He does his part when he's home (cooking, cleaning, trash, laundry and grocery) and when he's present, he is absolutely fantastic with our child. But quite literally the most I get out of him now is a 3 minute fuck session; which went from being once every couple weeks (his choice) to now he wants it every day (which is weird to me because why the fuck are you so horny constantly now?) But the big issue is that his boss is sexist and it's rubbing off on my husband. Since moving here, if I get pissed off that he is gone practically every weekend and sometimes during the week, he gets angry and says "I work all the fucking time" or "I worked all fucking day, I need a breather", just to apologize the next day. On 2 occasions, he has pulled the "you women" lines (NOT normal at all).
Well, his boss was here on Friday drinking. My husband remained sober because I told him I was going to let loose for once and had a few drinks myself while he had our baby. He had the baby for about an hour before his boss was telling him that it was time to go out to the pits. I told both my husband and his boss that no, my husband wasn't leaving. I was having a night to myself and where it was mother's day weekend, I deserved it. My husband did end up leaving but was only gone 20 minutes (to drop boss off). But just to be spite me, his boss called him in to work on Mother's Day (they NEVER work Sundays and quite literally never have). After this weekend I truly can't look at my husband the same. He lost his back bone when he met this guy and has become his bosses bitch. I told him last night that I am heavily considering divorce because I hate his boss and I know he won't quit his job and find something else. He of course is spewing promises now but I don't believe him honestly. Summer is coming up and I know this is bound to get worse. He's been basically crying ever since and called off work today but I won't comfort him. I spoke to a friend of mine about it (my husband's bosses wife, oddly enough) and she says I'm wrong because her husband and my husband are simply "best friends" and they only act like this because of how close they are and I'm being controlling by trying to make my husband choose me or his job/friendship. AITA?

2024.05.14 15:51 Ambitious-Toe879 I need help with interpretation of bloods

Hi all.. apologies if this is in the wrong page. I have recently had a battery off blood tests due to a number of symptoms. I have fatigue; tiredness back pain.upper and lower.actual general body pain which I put down to growing older!! particularly upper bilateral arm pain which I would have put down to muscle aches.. but they have lasted weeks Since january I have been getting random rashes that start with a burning itching sensation and then spread to ..neck face arms etc..sometimes raised and bumpy sometimes not.. usually happens when exposed to cold air. they do go away and antihistamines help. I do have an odd moving intermittent sharp pain on my left clavicle or behind it..I cannot pinpoint where it comes from. it reminds me off referred pain I had in my right shoulder when I had a benign liver cyst removed last October. I do lose circulation in my arms and legs frequently and have to move them to get them going again! ie so my hands and feet can go numb..and when I shake it out I get pins needles etc and then all is OK.. I have had this a long time but last few months very frequently sometimes a crawly feeling in lower legs and hands and sometimes face..head.. not unbearable more odd and happens intermittently no night sweats.. or permanent rash. my bloods are out of normal ranges in the following areas hair loss esp last 2 years no thyroid issues do have sleep apnea ( on cpap) hbp high cholesterol esr at 38 ( lab values should be under 15) c reactive protein 10 ( should be less then 5 low folate alk phosphatase is 135 and has been rising in each blood test.
mchv was just below baseline in my last bloods.. but fluctuates
immunoglobulin profile
IgG 12.78 g/L (5.52-16.31) IgA 3.63 g/L (0.65-4.21) IgM 0.59 g/L (0.33-2.93)
my gp was concerned about the immunoglobulin despite numbers being within levels and he ordered Serum Protein Electrophoresis test
That all seemed to be within the parameters however there was a comment on the report, included below.
Albumin (Per) 57.5 % (54.1-64.8) Albumin 44.9 g/L (38.0-51.0) Alpha 1 Fraction (Per) 3.9 % (3.1-5.2) Alpha 1 Fraction 3.0 g/L (2.3-3.9) Alpha 2 Fraction (Per) 10.0 % (7.3-11.9) Alpha 2 Fraction 7.8 g/L (5.3-9.0) Gamma Fraction (Per) 14.9 % (10.9-20.0) Gamma Fraction 11.6 g/L (7.7-15.5)
Comment See comment... Faint monoclonal IgA Kappa in the beta-gamma region, approx. 1 g/L. Quantification of free kappa and lambda light chains is recommended in the monitoring of monoclonal paraproteins. Please submit a fresh 2 mL sample of serum if you require this test to be performed.
09/05/2024 Specimen: Serum SPE Total Protein 78 g/L (64-83) Beta 1 Fraction (Per) 6.9 % (5.1-7.8) Beta 1 Fraction 5.4 g/L (3.6-5.7) Beta 2 Fraction (Per) 6.8 % (3.6-7.7) Beta 2 Fraction 5.3 g/L (2.6-5.9)
I think he ordered a free light chains serum test..but details not on report only the below comment
Free light chains-serum Results received from referral laboratory. Report forwarded to requesting location.
I have requested to speak to my GP but that can take a few days. I was a bit alarmed when I saw the faint monoclonal comment so wondering if anyone here might know what I could be looking at.. if this is the incorrect forum please let me know
thank you

2024.05.14 15:49 No_Most_1840 New here unsure what to do

Hello! So I have recently been having some symptoms consistent with PCOS and I’m getting a little frustrated with how slow the healthcare system moves.
I haven’t gotten my period in 5 months so last month I set up a phone appointment with my gyno. She ordered some bloodwork and said the next step would be an ultrasound if the tests were consistent with PCOS.
The next week I got my test results: normal glucose 81, testosterone 84, FSH 7.8, LH 28.4, TSH 2.4, prolactin normal 14, DHEA-S 14.
Since getting my test results on the app I have not heard anything from my doctor. Last week I called and apparently she’s out of town so they set me up with an NP phone appointment for next week to discuss my results.
Right now I’m 25, about to get married and we want to try having kids shortly after. So I obviously have done way too much googling. So my game plan so far has been zinc, inositol, cut out gluten and dairy, exercise, increase my fiber intake.
Any other advise on how to get my period back without birth control? Am I on the right track? I read a lot about metformin on here but my glucose was normal so I don’t know if that matters.

2024.05.14 15:48 Bright-Addendum-4192 Should I break up with my boyfriend?

Throw away account to remain anonymous. I ‘31F’ have been in a long term relationship with my Bf ‘41M’ for a little over 8 years. I love him, he is.. maybe was.. my person. We are not perfect and have had our fair share of disagreements, but he is the love of my life. The problem is that I recently found out he had been lying to me about our finances. He has about 2 months worth of bills saved up in the bank at the moment. Which honestly would not be that bad, if it wasn’t for the fact that he makes just a little less than 6 figures, and that his work fluctuates to the point that he is sometimes not working for weeks sometimes months at a time. While I work a standard 9-5 and make less than 30k a year. Now this isn’t the actual problem, we could have worked that part out. We could have sat down, made a budget, look at things we could cut out of our spending even if just temporarily to build up his savings. The problem is he lied to me about it. He also didn’t realize that he had lied to me about it because the last time I asked was a month or so ago and he told me had as much in his account as he does now. (It should have grown as he has had steady work, and was even on a 3 week work trip where he worked almost every day). And while I would not have been thrilled about this, I would not have been considering breaking up with him if he had just been honest about it. I know this probably doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, but this is not the first time he has lied to me. When I moved here (I grew up in a different state and moved to his state about 6 hours away from where grew up, about 5 years ago) he told me on the way to his moms house to meet her, that he had been lying about living with roommates, and had actually been living with his mom and off and on his nephews. He had told me he was embarrassed, and told me before going to his moms in case she mentioned it. While a bit odd, him living with his mom would not have bothered me. I feel like it’s smart to live with family if you get along with them well enough to do so, and don’t really have a reason/need to live by yourself or with roommates instead. I was deeply hurt that he had lied to me about this. That is not all he had lied to me about. He has also betrayed me in other ways. Him and I while not in an open relationship we do have the occasional ménage à trois. We have rules set up for these occasions as there were misunderstandings, and problems that arose when we were doing them before we became serious. One of the rules is that we have to ask before talking to the person we’re thinking of brining into the bedroom. This is simple enough. Well a few years ago he had a crush on a specific girl let’s call her Kyah ‘00 F’ idr how old she was at the time (him having crushes does not bother me, as I think it is normal to be attracted to people even in a serious relationship). However whenever she was brought up he would start acting weird. I tried getting him to just admit that he was attracted to Kyah as I know what it looks like when he is attracted to someone, and he kept saying things like “it’s not like that” or “I don’t expect anything to happen” and so on. Well we were at a concert that has a pretty big following, think kiss army or dead heads, type of following, so a bunch of us were staying in the same hotel. Kyah wasn’t staying there, but she was there for the parties that happen in the hallways and random rooms. Well she ended up in a room with a friend of ours. Nbd we don’t judge. While this was going on I decided I wanted to go back our (mine and my boyfriends hotel room, which was in this hotel) and take my contacts out as they were bugging me, and to change into comfier clothes. Well I decided instead to text my boyfriend to come back to our room for some fun and it was our anniversary. Well he brought Kyah back with him. He did not ask if this was okay before asking her or bringing her to our room. When I was surprised that she was there and said something like “oh why is she here” Kyah responded to Nik saying “see I told you” as though they had discussed her coming back for this. I then asked about her being in our friends room a little bit ago and Kyah stated “nothing happened, we just took pictures. (My boyfriend and this other friend do photography for these concerts). Something to note about me is that I have pretty bad anxiety, and have trouble sticking up for myself. This gave me a bit of a panic attack, and I ended up kind of freezing and going along with her being there a bit. I was extremely uncomfortable the whole time. We did not do much, and I did finally grow a pair after making out and some other little things, to point out that her underwear was inside out. She stated the other friend she had been with didn’t put them on right. I then said “I thought nothing happened?” She then responded “well he couldn’t get it up”. To which I finally stated that I was not comfortable and that I did not want to continue this. My boyfriend then took her back to her hotel as she was staying at a different one, and I proceeded to take a viscously hot shower and cry as I felt kind of violated. Yes I should have said something earlier. Yes I should have put my foot down. However my boyfriend knows I have anxiety and will go along with things when I’m feeling that way, and he broke the rule. He did not ask. He also didn’t ask her about being in our friend’s hotel room because he “didn’t think she would do anything like that with him”. We fought about this, about him breaking the rules, about him lying about liking her and wanting to invite her to our bedroom, about “not thinking” about her trying to f*ck one of our friends. This went on for a long time. I ultimately forgave him and we decided to work on communication, and build the trust back up. We also no longer invite anyone else to our bedroom as I know longer feel okay with that. With all of that being said, and the recent lie about our finances, combined with the other lies, and the situation with Kyah (which that is not all of the lies or betrayals that he has put me through but I don’t have the time or energy to go through all of them) has me feeling like an idiot for continuously forgiving him and expecting things to change. He even admitted last night that he would not trust me if the roles were reversed. Now I don’t know what to do. As I said before, I love him, and while I get we all make mistakes, this has been a recurring theme in our relationship, and it makes me sad to have to keep doing the work to trust him again. I don’t want to break up, but I also don’t want to keep doing this. I just love him so much. So should I break up with my boyfriend?

2024.05.14 15:48 HovercraftFast3858 This is for all Bangalorians who want to make new friends

I have moved to Bangalore around 2 years ago and loneliness is not a joke it hits really hard. i was an introverted guy since my child hood I usually do not like to socialize but still for an introverted guy like me this social isolation was much painful. So me and one of my friend in my pg thought of creating an app that could potentially solve all these problems.
So we have built an app called Antarac, an app designed to connect people with similar interests and facilitate engaging activities together. It's not just about finding Friday night party buddies; it's about forming meaningful connections with individuals who are genuinely enthusiastic about exploring the city and building friendships.
We recently launched exclusively for banglore. Give Antarac a try, you might just discover your tribe and embark on some unforgettable adventures together.
