DarkFuturology examines dystopian trends, usually in relation to current events, promoting total freedom of speech. We emerged from growing dissatisfaction with the utopian tech-porn dominating Futurology. As well as mainstream dystopian topics, we also promote discussion of controversial subjects that too often lurk in shadows far from the accepted discourse. This is necessary for building a broad understanding of all issues faced by humanity in this century and, if we're lucky, the next...

2024.06.07 22:41 vegetto712 OP05 Sabo Decklist

Maybe I'll become the new bad deck guy, because I've been having fun with this OP07 deck for a few days now using OP05 Sabo and it's actually not too bad. Now, it absolutely is dog shit vs P Law, but most other matchups it's solid and really fun.
You basically are trying to make your opponent use multiple attacks to kill things, or multiple KO effects from Lucci to do the same, while pumping 2-3 7k+ attacks per turn. I'm always open to advice, but this is where I've settled at as of today. Will give a brief rundown below and the list is at the bottom:
Early Game (4 or less DON!!): I always try to mulligan for either a 1c Koala or 1c Belo Betty, but the priority is always Koala for me. She is extremely powerful, and allows for 4 DON turns like Karasu w/ 1 DON on Sabo to protect vs early removal or Shuraiya and swing for 7 w/ Lead while still protecting the next turn.
Mid Game (5-8 DON!!): Karasu is the MVP of this deck, he is extremely annoying to deal with and very powerful if he doesn't get KO'd. You want to protect him at all costs. Alternatively, the 4c Brook I play is also very powerful, setting up the 6c Sabo very nicely which I only run 2 of. But best case scenario you've got a board of Rebecca / Rob Lucci / Kikunojo and you can x1 Brook and lower both, and then KO both w/ Sabo. Otherwise you can just KO a 4k after minus. My panic card is 5c Emporio, I might cut him, but if he hits a Karasu or Inazuma he's good value.
Late Game (8+ DON!!): Gecko and Dragon are your staples, with Gecko having great targets like Karasu, Shuraiya, 1c Koala, or Belo Betty. Dragon is a strong finisher, letting you do things like Dragon -> Karasu 7k -> Leader 7k and lower their leader to 4k. It's a lot to counter, and usually finishes the game. Alternatively if you are lucky and have Karasu on board, you can get the leader down to 3k and it's pretty much a wrap without blockers.
Events: Guard Point and Rad Beam are staples in most red decks, but I do find it hard to work with the DON, so that might be me being bad. But KEEP OUT is very strong, IMO. It will often times allow me to bait people to swing into Karasu w/ 6, I pump to 7 and then they will either be unable to finish him off and next turn he's a 7k swinging w/ his effect or they have to blow a ton of removal on him which allows me to trigger my Leader anyways.
Leader Ability: I love this ability, very much. Like I said before, my favorite 4 DON!! turn is Koala on board, play Shuraiya, swing for 7. Next turn they likely won't have enough to remove him and if they attack you get a free block since you can use the ability on him. Other than that, you have a ton of great ways to play around this ability, protecting cards like your blockers or Borsalinos, etc. Also, it's super frustrating to play against when you summon 5c Sabo and then the turn after they try to KO stuff and you still have the counters and Leader ability.
Weaknesses: P Law or Blue removal demolishes this build. And that's ok, I don't expect to be competitive. But it's solid vs all other matchups, and I'm enjoying it. I think it could use some card draw, but not sure aside from 4c Kuzan I could play?
Anyways, try it out, I really enjoyed it and maybe you will too!

The M47 sits at 7.3, while the M48 is currently at 7.7. How on Earth is the M48 considered better than the M47? The M47 has a way better (more manouverable) .50cal, over double the reverse speed (8km/h vs 19km/h), no obnoxious cupola weakspot, much faster turret rotation speed, and in my experience even troll-ier armour.

2024.06.07 22:30 Epicedion Torn between Stress/Trauma and Life Points

I'm working on a basic fantasy adventuring game in Cortex Prime (to lure my D&D players over) and I keep waffling back and forth on Stress vs HP. Stress seems fun because it's flexible and carries a lot of narrative weight, but HP + Complications seems much more reasonable for running interesting combats.
To expand on the HP side of things, I came up with a hack:
For this, I'm using Equipment as a (non-prime) trait, sort of as expanded Assets. Weapons and armor generally have a die rating as well as an innate SFX based on type (example: a two-handed axe has an SFX that adds an extra 'devastating wound d8' complication to the target on a heroic success).
My idea for the hack for HP is to keep the Effect Die as damage, plus roll a die from the weapon (say, a sword does +d6), and the target reduces the damage taken by rolling a die from their armor, and subtracting that. Example: player A rolls to hit with their sword and gets a normal success, with a result of 4 on their chosen Effect Die. They roll a d6 and get a 3, for a resulting damage of 7. The target rolls the d4 for their light armor and gets a 2, reducing the damage they take to 5.
Does anyone do anything like this, or am I just making things difficult on myself?

2024.06.07 22:11 JewishSpace_Laser What is the hardest pitch to hit?

Scenario is a Triple Crown candidate (Right handed batter) vs. most probable Cy Young candidate (Left Handed Pitcher). Bottom of the 9th, tied game 7 of World Series with 2 outs and runner on 3rd.

1st pitch is 95 MPH fastball taken down the middle
2nd pitch is 95 MPH fastball fouled off
3rd pitch

What pitch would most likely result in a swing and miss? Would it make any difference if the batter knew what type of pitch was coming?

Testing cheap manual lenses series: Brightin Star 35mm f/1.7 on an X-T4
I ordered a much of cheap manual focus lenses to pick one as my daily lens and make my X-T4 portable enough. Now I’m kind of overwhelmed and with only about 14 days left to return the rest, I figured I ask you people about your questions.
So far: I like how the lens renders, good contrast even at f/1.7, good build quality and size. I also find the focus ring on the front being more comfortable to use (vs the ones on the back). Sharpness is good enough, at least under not so extreme lighting conditions. I’m not sure about the markings accuracy, particularly about the infinity position. Minimum distance focus is quite good at 28cm.
Competitors are:
  • Brightin Star 35mm f/1.2
  • TTArtisans 35mm f/1.4
  • TTArtisans 25mm f/2
  • Meike 35mm f/1.4
  • Meike 35mm f/1.7
  • Meike 25mm f/1.8
Both questions, experiences and advice are welcome!

The Canary in the Coal Mine: Money Market Funds and Why Equities are Poised to Drop
Hola fellow regards,
Today I am going to dive into Money Market Funds, a topic that recently grasped my attention after a back and forth with one of our own, u/InterPeritura , compelled me to produce a write up of the current assumptions and overall misunderstandings involving this type of investment instrument as well as interest rates in general. Ultimately, this post is meant to elucidate why Money Market Fund Assets increasing during ATHs for equities is a harbinger of coming economic (both monetary and financial) distress.
If you already know what these are, please feel free to skip to "Times when money market fund assets increased while equities increased" section of this post.
What is A Money Market Fund?
To begin, I want to talk about what a Money Market Fund is not. It is NOT a Money Market Account. The difference between the two is that a Money Market Account is insured by the FDIC up to $250K, offers rates that are typically higher than typical savings accounts, and is more accessible than funds kept in the MMF.
Money Market Funds in contrast buy short term debt-based securities, cash or cash equivalents such as CDs and BAs (bank acceptances), and commercial paper. They can also participate in the repo market which adds another level of complexity to their composition structure and overall risk profile. They are NOT FDIC insured so there is no guarantee of principal.
A MMF is also NOT a Mutual Fund. A Mutual Fund is NOT restricted to regulatory determinations to hold a large amount of low-risk fixed instruments like government or municipal bonds. Mutual Funds can buy equities and corporate bonds, making them higher risk with higher reward.
Citation: https://www.investopedia.com/money-market-account-vs-money-market-fund-whats-the-difference-7557816#:\~:text=Money%20market%20accounts%20and%20money%20market%20funds%20are,in%20an%20MMF%20is%20insured%20by%20the%20SIPC.
Who invests in Money Market Funds?
Anyone can invest in the Money Market by directly buying the fund or indirectly through the securities that these funds buy which are primarily short term “liquid” assets with low risk of default. The typical MMF investor is likely buying into the fund in order to decrease risk in their portfolio during times of market uncertainty. However, many people overlook the glaring regulatory issues surrounding commercial paper being used as acceptable means of money market fund composition but that's a topic for another day.
MMFs can buy commercial paper and other securities and use those as collateral for other borrowings in overseas and onshore monetary facilities. Individual investors cannot participate in buying Non asset backed commercial paper. (You shouldn't want to anyway). Meaning banks and high credit financial companies can use unsecured commercial paper in repo operations with MMF managers who themselves are typically part of a financial institution. (Not with the FED but in the private repo market between intermediary financial entities like offshore banks and financial corporations).
Citation: Sec3(a)(3) of the Securities Act; FED1
Times when money market fund assets increased with equities (Hint: it's the opposite of “outgoing procession”)
Now that the background information on what MMFs are and how they operate have been clarified somewhat, I will now present data showing why increases in money market participation alongside increasing equities is actually a sign of trouble to come.
Current contemporary retail misconceptions:
  1. Interest rates falling make money market funds less attractive.
  2. Dropping interest rates makes money market fund participants switch to investing in equities.
The above two assumptions are the reasons why I made this post. This is because the above assumptions are wrong. They exist as a direct result of misinformation regarding why investors use these funds. The reason investors use money market funds, especially government and treasury type MMFs, is due to a desire for having cash in a liquid market where it will earn returns relatively risk free in lieu of better investment opportunities elsewhere.
Now ask yourself: “why would decreases in interest rates be linked to less participation in MMF and more money in equities?” The answer is....it doesn't. Interest rates in the short term (not long term), as we all already know, are influenced by FED policy. And by now we should know that the FED is primarily concerned with price stability and keeping unemployment low (how well they perform these duties is debatable). So, if central bankers are considering cutting rates, this means that current macroeconomic conditions are unfavorable for either one or both of the above-mentioned FED mandates. Poor economic future outlook is NOT a boon to equities, which should be obvious.
Basically, MMFs exist as a facility for investors to use to park cash while they wait for better opportunities in the market. Their main pros are high liquidity and low risk. Liquidity and risk management are the reasons money market funds of this type are used. We only need to look at 3 graphs to show us that money market funds increase in their attractiveness as economic conditions become more volatile and uncertain and only begin to decrease after the equities market bottoms out which will be used as our proxy for sentiment changes.
Exhibit A: Dot Com Bust
Leading up to the dot com bust, the fed funds rate started at 6.5 % in Q3 of 2000 and ended at 1.7% by Q3 of 2002 after the end of the recession. Picture 1 (blue line is 6.5% while red is 1.7%)
Picture 1 (blue circle is 6.5% while red is 1.7%)
Despite interest rates lowering, Money Market Fund Assets continued to increase and did not begin to decrease.... until the recession was over. At the same time the S&P 500 went from $2592 in Sept of 2000 all the way to $1412 by Sept 2002
Arrows are color coded to correspond with fed funds rate during the period discussed.
Arrows are color coded to correspond with fed funds rate during the period discussed.
Exhibit B: Global Financial Monetary Crisis
The date is September 6th, 2004. The federal funds rate is sitting at 1.48% (green circle). Three years later, on September 10th, 2007, the fed funds rate was 5.25% (orange circle)
pic#4
During this time, money market funds did, in fact, increase in net assets (See pic #5). However, in 2008 when the GFC was well underway, Bernanke slashed rates all the way to 0.15% by Sep 7th, 2009 (purple circle). Yet, despite the lower yield on money market funds during this time, net assets increased until they peaked in Q4 of 2008 and remained relatively level until Q2 of 2009 (See purple line in pic #5).
#5: MMF assets INCREASED while rates were lowering in the recession (shaded region)
This decrease in Money market fund net assets coincided with the bottom in equities that same year. Money remained “sidelined” until macroeconomic confidence was restored. (See pic #6).
#6 Purple line in pic 5 and this pic show that sentiment change in the equities market corresponded with decreasing MMF utilization
Are we seeing the pattern here? Money Market Fund utilization is not tied to interest rates. They are tied to macroeconomic conditions and sentiment. MMFs are increasingly used when macroeconomic sentiment and outlook begins to increase in uncertainty and typically reach highest net asset values when sentiment around equities change. They are NOT tied to interest rates.
Exhibit C: Covid Lockdown Recession
Many people forget that, prior to COVID, macroeconomic sentiment was leaning toward a weakening economy and a looming, but slightly obfuscated, recession. Again, same pattern with economic uncertainty increasing and Money Market Fund net asset values increasing while equities rise.
In response to anticipated macro weaknesses, Powell began to cut rates halfway through the Q3 of 2019 starting from 2.41% in July of 2019 all the way to 1.55% by November of 2019(See picture #7).
Pic #7. Red dot is 0% interest rates in March
However, during the last half of 2019, MMF increased in net assets despite the decreasing interest rates(See picture # 8).
Pic #8 :Increasing MMF utilization alongside decreasing interest rates
All of this occurring while equities reached ATHs in December and would tread water until Covid in late february/early march caused mass selloffs (See picture #9).
pic #9: Between black and green lines, S&p increased while MMF asset increased (See pic#8)
The unprecedented monetary and fiscal stimulus policies and packages make this data series harder to interpret. However, we can infer that the V-shaped recovery in equities following the intervention from the FED that wiped out many veterans in this sub was indicative of a sentiment shift. Again, MMF net assets corroborate this relationship with sentiment being the deciding factor as net assets began to decrease and level off until late 2022 and early 2023 when they began rising again...the same year everyone was expecting a recession to occur.
Conclusion
In summary, if there was a causal and directly proportional relationship between interest rate levels and MMF net assets, there would not be so many instances of money market funds being over utilized during periods of interest rate cuts. MMFs are primarily utilized by private investors, institutions, and companies to manage risk while keeping capital in highly liquid assets in uncertain market climates. NOT for the enticing interest rate.
TLDR?: There is no observable correlation with money market fund asset increases corresponding with rises in equities later. This means cash in those instruments are not used later on in equity markets but primarily to keep current cash liquid and earning interest to a relatively safe degree. Powell cutting interest rates is a sign that a recession is already underway and will be a time when market sentiment will be at their lowest and most uncertain, MMFs will actually be increasing in net assets while equities fall.
Positions? I am currently building a QQQ short position in LEAPs with strike prices in the mid 300s. Will update once it is above $10k
Thoughts?

2024.06.07 21:57 chill_dude6969 Batch ’81 (1982)

"Alpha Kappa Omega; Ang simula at wakas ay kapatiran"
To the naked eye and perception of the viewer, this film entails the life of a collegiate accepting the challenge of becoming a fratman along with going through the rigors of a frat’s initiation.
It is only different when the viewer is someone who posseses an open mind. It details how a totalitarianism rule takes place, even in a small scale organization such as a fraternity. The neophytes are tasked to follow orders without second thought and without asking why. Blind subordination is the concept they are to apply.
During the phases of their initiation, the neophytes are subject to extreme hazing, and actions that deprive them of dignity as human beings, ungguyan and gulpihan as it is called in the film. As stated by their master,
Walang ungguyan o gulpihan na hindi napaguusapan.
Meaning that it is justified within the fraternity. As the strong-willed neophytes proceed on their journey, they are tested.
Their first taste of ungguyan was to streak the city only in their underwear.
Pacoy, a virgin, is coerced to have sex. And to also have his food played with by his masters, and being confided that he was being recorded while doing the act when it fact it shouldn’t be beknownst to him.
When Ronnie decided to quit, he was subject to electrical torture and a beating session from his father, one of the founders of AKO, with a nonsense True or False quiz bee with the right answers making absolutely no sense (but they were funny, I won’t lie)
Though this one part of the scene truly brought out Mike de Leon’s genius:
Ang Martial Law ay nakabuti sa taong bayan. Tama o Mali?
Ronnie’s lack of response is widely subject to interpretation.
Sid Lucero takes on the role of being the batch’s de facto leader. He was mentioned as someone who thought and acted like a master. He never questioned anything his whole time as a neophyte, this always brought out arguments in the batch. Even at times supporting/enabling the wrongdoings of the masters.
Another highlight is the use of Nazi symbolism at their talent show, Upakan ’81. The brawl scene where ΑΚΩ fights ΣΟΣ at the backstage where AKO was crossdressed still makes me laugh.
Arni and Ronnie are two characters that didn’t deserve their fates.
Arni just simply wanted to date a girl, but was held back by Abet who was her brother, also a fratman under Sigma Omicron Sigma. They eventually put Arni down for good. Angering Sid who wanted to get revenge for his dear friend and batchmate.
Even if frats seemed barbaric the whole film, they had a system for brawls which surprised me.
In the brawl, it was Sigma who broke the conditions of the agreement. They brought weapons which were not part of the deal. Luckily enough, AKΩ brought their own set of tools. Meaning that not all the time, fratmen keep their word.
At the end, it was something of delayed gratification. A reach to the finish line. 5 made it to become brods.
The ending scene shows us a glimpse that it is an endless cycles as what once were neophytes, were now masters. They are continuing to enforce the brutal system. Creating a perpetual cycle of endless agony and hurt. Depriving young men of their ability to think freely;
Like how Ferdinand Marcos Sr. stripped the Filipino of his dignity. Making him a slave of his regime, a pawn in his game.
I recommend that this film be mandatory viewing for students. It is a film that opens the heart and mind.

2024.06.07 21:55 Majestic_Poet7506 Please weigh in on this scenerio

I recently applied for a national sales executive position with an insurance company that was looking to fill a position on July 1st. The interview process started in March. I was willing to stick out for 4 months for this position because it was desirable job and high income. I was told all along they were hiring three candidates. Was in the final stages of interviewing and the hiring manager completely ghosted me after months courting me. One of the reasons I applied was because i understood they needed to fill 3 positions which made me feel i had better chance. They offered a position to another candidate but didnt tell me they werent considering me any longer--they felt ghosting was their preference. They pulled the position from their website. About 3 weeks after they filled the position, they sent me reject email. Then the next day they reposted the position. My question to anyone in the know, is that some sort of legal maneuver to avert discrimination tactic? They clearly didnt want me and get this I had 10 years in this field, completed over 5000 enrollments for a competitor businesses, had endorsement from 7 internal employees with this company, including 3 in leadership role and glowing endorsement from previous sales director. Legal is the only reason I can think of for filling the position, formally rejecting candidates and then reposting. Is that shady or what? Even if it was a budgetary thing where they just got approval for another position, they would have been in communication with me or recontacted me if they got approval after rejecting me if they were interested in me. i then filed a complaint with CEO and HR ratting the hiring manager out for ghosting me because he had reputation among other applicants and letting me find out from the streets peers vs the company that I was no longer being considered. Has anyone else had this happen, getting rejection closing out req, then reopening that same week?

Home Assistant CEBL Integration
I've built a custom Home Assistant Integration to track CEBL teams, games, and scores. With this integration you can add team info to your dashboard, have lights flash when the game starts, play sounds when your team wins, etc, etc.
Love any feed back if anyone here uses Home Assistant would be awesome, however I understand that most folks will not know what that is, but I recommend checking our homeassistant if you're into Smart Home stuff already and you're sick of having 12 apps for all the different things connected in your house.
