2024.05.14 03:37 StephenMiniotis Thoughts and Writings: "On Hearing Voices".
Ladies and brethren, I stand declared, a person who hears voices in his mind and communicates with himself. I have been diagnosed with Paranoia and Schizophrenia; and despite being medicated with what I call inhibitors, the voices in my head ever continue to harass, play, and entertain me.
I no longer fear the voices; certainly, they're a nuisance. I cannot drive, for example, or operate heavy machinery. I'm carefully distracted while reading; my reading speed has slowed to a crawl; I take just one course per year at the University, for which I recieve a grant, and am carefully distracted.
But despite the drawbacks and setbacks, I consider hearing voices to be an upgrade to regular consciousness. I can now emulate people in my mind, and calculate probabilities which, in all likelihood, won't occur. I hear dialogue and fiction spread itself before my mind, in ways unimaginable to a regular, "healthy" person. I have summoned einstien's emulation in my mind, just to hear him lecture on why he isn't dead yet in my mind; and wrote a treatsie on time, for example.
I dialogue with characters from the past and present - and some I've made up entirely. Anyone I think of isn't immune. Where this journey ends, nobody knows; but to consider me the ill one, and diagnose me, and medicate me, is, I think, doing me a disservice.
Fear is a low-level play of acumen. And if you are afraid of the voices, and still paranoid, then my brother, you might need medication, if only temporarily - but sometimes for life. But sometimes you just need someone to explain to you that nobody is in your mind, that you hear emulations, and that you'll be fine.
And once you realize that your mind emulates other people, and seize the day, so to speak, and seize control of the situation, then you have entered a higher realm of learning, one where dialogue and fiction are written in your mind, while you enjoy a laugh or two. Comeotragic, isn't it? And rather artistic, these fictitious characters, these emulations, these voices. And the beauty of it? None of it ever occured, but in your mind.
Never fear the voices, Never do what the say, and always laugh alone at the sheer ridiculousness of the situation, and you'll be just fine. Toughen up. Certainly the voices will berate you, belittle you, and beat you down if you let them. But if they come to fear and respect you some day, then maybe you'll be glad. And some writing may come of this.
note: at the request of his family, the artist will be taking meds for life. He's injected every three months to inhibit the voices.

2024.05.14 03:00 ImOnTheBus Visited Lexington for first time recently. One of my favorite cities that I've been to.
Just wanted to let you folks know that your city is awesome!
Usually not a fan of cities in general, more of a country mouse. Dislike the traffic and noise and confusing routes and dickhead people and prices etc.... Been to many bigger cities all over the USA and mostly hate them all, hah.
Go to a lot of concerts which brings me to various cities and came to Lexington for Billy Strings a few weekends ago.
Everybody I met was super friendly, especially the local people at the concerts, and seemed pretty genuine.
We stayed in an AirBnb near Transylvania College and we hung out with some guy who lived in the apartments, just genuinely nice cool dude, you could tell he was a good dude because his big dog was super nice too.
We ate at restaurants and went to bars the whole time and they were all affordable and had good service.
I usually refuse to drive anywhere when staying in cities that I'm not familiar with, but it was super easy to drive around and the people did not drive like assholes. We drove to McConnell Springs park, which was very nice for being so near the city, and there was some event going on there where young people had owls and hawks and were super enthusiastic to tell me about them, and some old timers were playing some really good bluegrass music there. Seemed like there was bluegrass playing everywhere, and bluegrass is why I came there!
We walked home from the concerts both nights and it was completely uneventful, felt perfectly safe.
Have added Lexington, KY to the short list of cities that I really like along with Wilmington, NC, St. Augustine, FL, and Atlantic City, NJ (OK, I just like that place because you do not have to drive anywhere at all once you park and it's like a giant carnival on the ocean, I don't even gamble.)

2024.05.14 01:56 Master_Rogue_Darnesh Help Please
So I started in 2004 on working towards a career in law enforcement. I got my CJ degree at the end of 2005 and started a police academy at my local community College in the fall of 2006. Graduated from the academy in spring of 2008 and applied with a bunch of departments but never got any traction.
I finally applied with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department, in MO, in January 2009, mainly because they always needed people.
I began my career with SLMPD in March of 2010 and all was fine for the first 4ish years and then 2014 happened in the St. Louis area.
The City of Saint Louis has been on a huge decline since then but I stayed because I had decent senority and was surrounded by great officers and supervisors.
In 2022, my mental health finally boiled over and I was placed on administrative duty. I finally decided that I wanted out and began working on a Cyber Security degree and took an entry level IT position.
I was finally able to get my mental health under check, thanks to a 6 week out patient program. With this new lease on life, having a steady therapist, and realizing I don't want to be stuck behind a desk, I decided that I want to go back to law enforcement just not where I was.
Once again, I've applied to a bunch of departments but keep getting rejected, and most departments refuse to give me a reason.
I plan to keep going but I'm really struggling.
What are some possible other jobs that would allow to use the skills I've acquired over the years? I'm just not getting any traction with any other fields right now.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

[12:31 PM]
Sheesh
[12:31 PM]
Im sorry
katocean. — 04/04/2024 12:37 PM What do you think the issue is? Like not placing blame on you or anything... but when you do a deep dive into yourself what issues or things do you think makes it hard for a women to want to pursue anything further with you?
katocean. — 04/04/2024 12:53 PM The snap chat thing is a little creepy IMO
[12:53 PM]
So Im not surprised you arent getting much traction from that

2024.05.13 23:06 Altruistic_Villain Possible Move
My fiancé applied to a job that we thought originally would take us to St. Louis but apparently he would be needed in Springfield. While this would be a great opportunity for his work, we’re both a bit reticent about moving there.
Some background: I’m originally from Colorado (where we live), but I did spend a few years in Northwest Arkansas as a kid. So I’m familiar with some of the area. Fiancé is from Minnesota but has been in CO since college. I’m now in a career transition (I’m leaving teaching), and we were already putting my house on the market to move closer to his work. So if we’re going for this, now is the time! We’re not super extroverted people but I enjoy going out and hiking is one of our main hobbies. We aren’t religious.
I’ve heard a lot of the bad (from ticks and chiggers to tornadoes to politics—I already live in a red area that has a fair amount of crime), but what are the good things about Springfield? What opportunities are there for work for a former teacher who wants to try something new? Also, Renting doesn’t actually seem to be much cheaper there than it is in Colorado.
Any suggestions or support would be greatly appreciated as we figure out if this is what we want!

2024.05.13 22:48 BigTrust2553 college decision
I've been accepted to the finance (or business) programs at St. John's University, Baruch College, and Georgia Tech. St. John's and Baruch College are attractive options because they don't require paying a lot of money (St. John's offers quite generous scholarships). But Georgia Tech is much more expensive due to being classified as out-of-state. My goal is to work in IBD after graduating, and entering Georgia Tech's business program seems like the best option, but financially it's a significant burden. Should I take out a loan and go Georgia Tech?

2024.05.13 22:01 demigod_691 IIM A AC-5 UG Cutoff Doubt
Hi Fellow CAT Aspirants and Alumnis,
I had a doubt regarding my profile. Would be great if you could take a look and help me out.
My tenth and 12th is sorted with 92% each. But I graduated from St. Xaviers College, BMM (AC-5 Category) with a CGPA of 9.29. The shitty Mumbai Unviersity conversion gives me a 76.9 percentage which as per what I have understood falls behind the cut off of 80 percentage minimum in UG for IIM Ahmedabad.
If anyone has any idea about how the MU percentage is calculated or how the AC-5 cutoff works, I’d be grateful.
PS - I also have work experience of 22 months as of June 30th. Would be great if you could rate my profile as well 😃

2024.05.13 22:01 BigDirector4748 Questions about st.cloud
I'm originally from South Carolina and have been living in St cloud for a few years but I have some questions about this place that I hope someone can answer.
- Why doesn't the airport offer more flights? MSP is a hassle and would rather not pay an arm and a leg for parking. I feel like if STC offered flights to hubs like Chicago or Atlanta more people would fly there just to get to where they need.
- Why aren't there more 24 hour dinning options? I feel like something similar to a waffle house would kill it up here considering all the college kids.
- Do any concerts or anything ever come here? It feels like it's close enough to Minneapolis/St.Paul ( I'm never calling them "the cities") that it could just having something here. The hockey arena seats 5,000 and the Rivers edge convention center is there as well.
I see a lot of potential for st.cloud, just curious to what's stopping it

MY REBUTTAL TO THE OBLIGATORY “IS THIS A SCAM?” QUESTION: At the risk of sounding arrogant, I consider myself to be at least marginally more intelligent (both academically & socially) than the average person. Therefore, if I ever decided to suddenly risk prison time, risk my reputation, and risk enduring the wrath of modern-day “cancel culture” by scamming people out of their money:
- I certainly wouldn’t do it for such paltry amounts of money. (i.e., anything less than $1,000 per victim.)
- I certainly wouldn’t choose high school & college students as my “target audience” to scam, considering that most people without college degrees have abysmally low annual incomes. Why choose low-income victims when it would be much more profitable to target high-income, high-net-worth individuals earning at least six figures a year? I have knowledge in business consulting, and I promise you that a business owner would be a MUCH more lucrative mark than a low-income college student.
- I wouldn’t choose such a time & energy-draining method of scamming people. Also, communicating back and forth with potential clients is an absurdly long time sink since only less than 10% of all potential clients who reach out to me actually become paying clients of mine. This means that 90% of my time communicating with potential clients ultimately proves to be a colossal waste of my irretrievable time & energy.
- If you pay me to provide academic services and I don’t deliver, you can always dispute the payment with the payment app and easily get your money refunded. If I were in the habit of swindling money from people, then all of my payment accounts would have been investigated and be completely shut down by now. And I would have been permanently banned from opening new accounts. Therefore, the fact that all my payment apps have been fully active for years should be sufficient proof that I haven’t had people consistently disputing payments sent to me.
HOW TO CONTACT ME: - If you are interested in my services and would like to learn more info, please feel free to reach out to me.
- Text messages and email are the fastest and easiest ways to get in touch with me. However, I gladly accept phone calls.
- If I don't respond right away, I am most likely helping a student at the time and not currently available to speak on the phone. But I always make a solid effort to reply to texts, emails, and phone calls within an hour.

2024.05.13 21:37 Enthusiasm_Still Viability of Zion(Plat) and how it can turn existing cities in the southwest into people friendly ones.
So during the instances of spending way to much time on the internet i found something that had a very niche interest. The Plat of Zion was a proposed design of the ideal city that the Latter Day Saints(Mormons) should aspire to build and live in as envisioned by Joseph Smith. While not build it had a significant influence amongst the cities that were settled in Utah such as Provo, Manti, St George, and finally Salt Lake City. I was looking at pictures of SLC in the late 19th century and I saw that it was grid based and had wide roads with space for public transit and pedestrians to mingle freely this wasnt that different for many cities in the southwest of the same period such as Denver. I wonder if the original intent of the plat that Latter Day Saints used can be used for cities in the southwest today. What do many of you think?

2024.05.13 21:28 hotheadnchickn Places with good transit
I can drive short distances but anything more than about 15 minutes I can't do because of chronic pain issues. I am thinking of moving but need to be somewhere with good transit and decent walkability (walking is fine for me). What cities or college towns in the US are good for folks like me? NYC comes to mind but I am not sure where else. I know LA, Seattle, St Louis, and Atlanta have metro systems but not sure how functional they are.

2024.05.13 21:23 Krauge Any resources on the way to use a prayer rope for things other than the Jesus Prayer?
Other prayers for the prayer rope, especially those for praying for the dead, and trying to pull them out of Hades. I keep seeing the stories about people (like St. Joseph the Hesychast) talking about the prayer rope saving people, but they don’t actually go into the specific prayers used to do so, or the type of prayers. Any help would be hot.

2024.05.13 21:06 QueenCamellia Itinerary Check (20 nights - Tokyo/Matsumoto/Kanazawa/Kyoto/Hiroshima/Osaka)
Hi! Studied a lot from these subreddits, would love to see ways this can be improved.
Context: Two college-aged students (AFAB) on a reasonable budget. My partner is coming from Canada. I (22F) am coming from the United States. I have travelled to Japan before (Golden Route), and I speak Japanese (~N3 level, nearly N2 / studied multiple years).
Disclaimer: We met and bonded over our shared interest in Japanese pop culture, so there may be more of that in this itinerary (particularly in Tokyo). We're also more on the artsy side.
I tried to build in free days in consideration of the August heat and flexibility. Tried not to load up each day with too much - have things bookmarked in the areas we're going to if we want to hit up more things.
Tokyo (Aug 3-Aug6)
Hotel based near Kanda station.
Aug 3
- Will land in early afternoon. Easy day. Explore area around hotel. Walks. There's a remotely-operated robot cafe near our hotel that might be fun.
- Most likely hit up Akihabara arcades, try the foods. Might check out Eorzea Cafe or save for another day.
Aug 4
- Tsukiji Market (early morning)
- TeamLab Planets + DiverCity Tokyo
- Might pop into the Unko Museum
- Waterbus (if scenic) to Asakusa

Aug 5
- Harajuku Snoopy Cafe (early morning) - pair with Meiji Shrine
- Takeshita St
- Shibuya lunch + shopping
- Shinjuku - Omoide Yokocho (dinnertime)

Possible Tokyo free day plans: - Ikebukuro Day = book fake food making class, explore Sunshine City (\might have collaboration event), check if nui clothes shop open*
- Hakone daytrip = Hakone loop (all day) - Korakuen / Tokyo Dome showing Matsumoto (Aug7-Aug8)
Hotel based near Matsumoto Station for convenience.
Aug 7
- Arrive in Matsumoto
- Miso Brewery Tour?

- Nakamachi St
Aug 8
Kanazawa (Aug9-10)
Hotel based near Kanazawa Station.
Aug 9

Aug 12
- Bike day - will rent bikes and follow self-guided bike tour :)
- either in Arashiyama (past Togetsukyo Bridge/Tenryuji/Nonomiya Shrine/Bamboo Forest/Nisoin/Daikakuji)
- OR down towards Uji depending on heat

2024.05.13 20:29 lemon_lime_light Minnesota State professors ask lawmakers for more academic freedom protections
From the
Star Tribune:
Minnesota State professors are asking lawmakers to enshrine their academic freedoms in state law, saying they're concerned about restrictions passing in other parts of the country...
The request comes at a tenuous time for professors, whose working conditions vary greatly across the nation. The American Association of University Professors said political interference in higher education "has reached an alarming level," with at least 99 bills being introduced in more than 30 state legislatures over the past four years. New laws passed in Republican-controlled states, such as Florida and Texas, curtailed the teaching of topics like race and gender or banned diversity, equity and inclusion offices.
The restrictions are passing at a time when American views on higher education appear to be changing and growing more partisan. A Gallup poll conducted last year found the percentage of Americans expressing confidence in the sector had declined, with Republicans reporting larger drops than Democrats.
A bill that passed the DFL-led Senate Monday states that Minnesota State faculty would be free to teach in their areas of expertise "without interference from political figures, boards of trustees, donors, or other entities." It would also say that faculty are "entitled to full freedom in research" and prohibit the system from discriminating against them "for engaging in political activities or holding or voicing political views" as long as it "does not interfere with the faculty member's job responsibilities."
The bill would apply only to the Minnesota State system, which serves more than 300,000 students at places including St. Cloud State University and Minnesota State University, Mankato. It doesn't cover the University of Minnesota or private schools, but the issue sometimes flares on those campuses too. Hamline University drew international attention in a debate over teaching Islamic art.

2024.05.13 20:28 the_running_stache I enjoyed my first-ever trip to Kolkata; highly recommend!
| TL;DR: Thanks for having me in your city. I had a great time! Artwork depicting Kolkata I had lunch at the original location! Desserts/mithai Avartana 9-course tasting menu Fennel Panna Cotta I am a Mumbai guy and visited Kolkata for the first-time ever. I visited during the worst possible season when the temperatures were 42-44 degC at their max, but I had a great time. I was supposed to visit with my friend but she couldn't make it due to some reasons and I ended up having a solo trip. No worries because I love to travel solo. (She informed me well in advance, so it's not like she canceled last minute.) Stay: I stayed at the ITC Royal Bengal for 3 nights and chose to spend 1 night at The Oberoi Grand. Why different hotels? Just to experience the hotels and the neighborhoods. Both hotels were great. The hard product (rooms and amenities) was really great at ITC, but the soft product (service) was much better at Oberoi. Food: - I should preface with: I am a vegetarian.
- I went to 6 Ballygunge Place to try authentic Bengali food and opted for their buffet. I enjoyed it a lot.
- I also had the 9-course menu at Avartana in ITC Royal Bengal; it was a great experience. I know that having South Indian food in Kolkata is a faux paus - why not have more local food instead? But I wanted to try out that restaurant and it was indeed very good.
- I had my breakfasts at ITC and Oberoi, so I didn't venture out for that.
- I enjoyed the street kathi rolls.
- I had delicious desserts - rasgulla, sandesh, mishti doi, and Tiramisu (I know... there's an imposter in here, but I enjoyed them all).
- I had good drinks (beers and cocktails) at various bars (and trust me, I tried a lot of them on Park St - Social, Effingut, Olterra, to name a few, at bars in Salt Lake City, and the bars in ITC & Oberoi. Yes, I drank a lot every night that I was there; yes, I know I have a problem. Haha).
Visit: I wanted to have a relaxing trip and so I didn't go overboard on the sightseeing. I checked out Prinsep Ghat, Old Kolkata heritage buildings (High Court, Bidhan Sabha, Town Hall, Raj Bhavan, etc.), Howrah Bridge, Vidyasagar Setu, Victoria Memorial, Salt Lake neighborhood, some temples (didn't go to any major ones), Kumartuli, Bara Bazar, College Street, Alipore Museum, Golf Course, etc. Due to the heat (Mumbai was at 32 degC, whereas Kolkata was at 44 degC), I chose to just do a private caUber ride for most of these places. I had hired a good local guide (who also drove me around) and showed me all the places. I also went to Howrah and saw Nabanna (obviously, from outside). Traveling around/Transportation: I chose to fly into and out of Kolkata. I was initially thinking of taking a train, but then looking at the time it would have taken from Mumbai, I chose air travel instead and am very glad about it. Vistara had good on-time service both ways. It set the right tone for the trip. As I mentioned earlier, I booked a private car for some of the sightseeing and took Ubers around for the most part. I did ride the tram (number 5) from Esplanade to College Street and took the Metro back from Girish Park to Esplanade just to experience it. Shopping: I didn't do a lot of shopping, but bought myself a kurta (Panjabi) and dhuti from Adi Akshoy at Triangular Park. I hadn't researched on shopping and the guide directed me here. I bought a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses because I was walking past a store and really thought of getting a new pair of sunglasses (while I was wearing another pair of Ray-Bans). Tbh, I could have just bought this in Mumbai, but it was an impulse buy. And then I bought a lot of books at the airport for my return. Argh! I already have so many at home, but couldn't resist. I should have just headed to the airport lounge directly instead of wasting time in the terminal shopping for books. Some things worth mentioning: - I guess this is the Indian city with the maximum modes of transportation - taxis, auto-rickshaws, 6-people rickshaws, hand-pulled rickshaws, trams, buses, private buses, old Metro, new Metro, ferries, small boats, Ubers, Uber Bike (I don't see this in Mumbai), etc.
- Salt Lake seems very different from the rest of the city.
- When the CM moved the CM's office to Nabanna, technically, since the CM sits in the capital city, does that make Howrah the capital city now? I know it's not and it would anger most people here, but just was wondering. My guide had no idea; he kept on insisting that Kolkata is the capital of the state. Haha.
- I found a lot of similarities in the British architecture in Kolkata and (South) Mumbai, but Kolkata has a red-and-white color scheme going on a lot. I am no expert in Victorian or baroque architecture, so pardon me if there are vast differences in style.
- I didn't get to visit some major sights like Belur Math or Dakhineswar Temple. I chose to be lazy in the hotels and relax at the swimming pools instead. The afternoon heat made the pools and the air-conditioned bars (cold beers and G&Ts) very inviting. That's ok, I guess.
- I couldn't find a place for jhaal muri! I got dry jhaal muri at the airport lounge on my way out, but it wasn't the authentic experience I was looking for. Where should I have looked?
- I loved your aloo dum and luchis.
- I wanted to get the shakha pola bangles for my mother, but I couldn't find any place. My guide took me to a (gold) jeweler... um, no, that's not the same thing. Where should I have gone? I feel bad that I didn't bring anything back for my mom from the trip :(
Just other some things: (and I am not trying to look down upon it, but just writing a truthful account of my experience) - ITC Royal Bengal was a shitshow on the weekend! It was overcrowded due to the IPL (and some football matches as well) - I saw a lot of foreign and Indian players, but since I don't follow cricket, I couldn't recognize anyone. But everyone in the lobby - me, other guests, including those players - was frustrated because check-in was taking a long time; they made me wait 2+ hours just to check-in! It wasn't just me; most guests were frustrated and this was not expected from ITC. Sunday breakfast was also like a zoo; it was overpacked. Note to self: avoid visiting this hotel on weekends.
- Oberoi Grand is nice, but the whole aesthetic is very dated. I understand it is a heritage property with grand vanities and beds in teakwood which is supposed to be the ultimate old-school wealth indicating the person comes from wealth, but when compared with the contemporary and modern look at ITC, it felt very dated. Also, if you are staying at the Oberoi, please try to get an inside-facing (pool-facing) room; the view outside is not at all something special you would want to view.
- Please don't take this the wrong way: There should be more focus on the overall cleanliness by the city municipal corporation. And I say this coming from Mumbai, which I am fully aware is not known for its cleanliness either. But Mumbai seems cleaner. For example, I took a kathi roll somewhere on Park Street and was walking around looking for a dustbin/garbage can to throw the wrapper and my tissue papepaper napkin, but there was none! I walked a few blocks just searching for one. I asked around and people laughed at me. Finally, a paanwala told me - just throw it on the side, there are no dustbins here; a guy comes in the morning and cleans it all - that's not good imho. There were just piles of trash littered on the sides of the streets and foot paths, which is sad. Also, the route from ITC to Oberoi (via Dhapa Road and Debendra Chandra Dey Road) was interesting...
Overall: 5/5 stars submitted by the_running_stache to kolkata [link] [comments] |
2024.05.13 20:00 lemon_lime_light Trump will stump in Minnesota, traditionally blue state he insists he can win. Is it really in play?
From the
Washington Post:
Trump will take a break from his hush money trial in New York to speak at the Minnesota GOP’s annual Lincoln Reagan fundraising dinner. Tickets start at $500, ranging up to $100,000 for a VIP table for 10 with three photo opportunities with Trump. The dinner coincides with the party’s state convention...
Trump came close to taking Minnesota and its 10 electoral votes in 2016, when he fell 1.5 percentage points short of Hillary Clinton in a state that no Republican presidential candidate has won since Richard Nixon in 1972. He returned to Minnesota several times in 2020, but Democrat Joe Biden beat him by more than 7 percentage points when he tried for a second term.
Still, Trump continues to insist he can win in Minnesota...
Trump appeared to falsely claim in an interview just ahead of Super Tuesday that he actually won Minnesota in 2020.
“Well, I thought we won it last time, I’ll be honest,” he told KNSI Radio in St. Cloud. “And I think we did win it.”
There’s no evidence that there were any serious irregularities in the 2020 election in Minnesota. A handful of challenges to the results failed.
Experts are split on whether Minnesota really will be competitive this time. Some say the economy remains a Biden vulnerability despite low unemployment and rising consumer confidence. The state’s unemployment rate is 2.7%, well below the national jobless rate of 3.8%, thanks to strong job and labor force growth, with wage growth outpacing inflation, according to state officials.
University of Minnesota political scientist Larry Jacobs said that while 2020 was a good year for Biden in Minnesota, he’s not sure the president will be so well positioned this time...
But Steve Schier, professor emeritus of political science at Carleton College, said Minnesota’s voting history leaves him skeptical, though he thinks the race could be close there.
