2024.04.28 20:53 sothz What are your go-to holiday booking sites?

For some reason, I feel like I am out of the loop when it comes to booking holidays. What is everyone using these days to find deals? If it makes a difference I'm mainly looking for flights + hotels or self-catering in Europe, usually separately rather than packages.

2024.04.28 20:48 Far-Tax5301 Does my 4-Day Super Fan VIP Hotel Package include admittance to see the Wednesday bands?

It's our first time going to WTR after years of going to Blueridge. We bought an official hotel package (4-Day Super Fan VIP Package with Home2 Suites by Hilton hotel room).
Does the hotel package include the Wednesday night pre-party/concert? I can't find that info anywhere.
I'm also confused if the Wednesday "Pre-Party" is some sort of party separate from the live music, or does "pre-party" mean entrance to the venue to watch the bands? Thanks!

2024.04.28 20:33 ShroveGrove 98g Protein Pasta Salad :-)

98g Protein Pasta Salad :-)
This pasta salad has been my holy grail for the past few weeks, and I’m so excited to share it with you girls. It’s high in protein, high in fiber, great to take to work for lunch, keeps in the fridge for 5 days, and is super yummy.
Protein: 98g
Carbs: 63g
Fiber: 23g
Fat: 15g
Sugar: 2g
Calories: 705
Ingredients:
-1lb HIGH PROTEIN BEAN PASTA!!! I used Lupii’s lupini elbow pasta here.
-2.5lb chicken. I am lazy here and buy prebagged chicken by Perdue. Bonus points here if you can grill or roast the chicken yourself… it’ll cut down on sodium and processed food.
-6oz canned/jarred artichoke hearts. I prefer jarred, as the oil comes in handy while handling the pasta. I ALWAYS use these. I have always used ones that are in oil, not water.
-Assorted veggies… this time I only did chickpeas. But I’ve done baby carrots, reduced-sodium pimento olives, pickled peppers, and regular bell peppers.
-About 120mL apple cider vinegar. I honestly just pour it in while mixing everything together, I don’t really measure this. White vinegar is also an option.
-Salt, cracked black pepper, Italian seasoning to taste.
-A splash of lemon juice (optional).
-A tiny bit of creamy dressing, yogurt, or mayo. Like the ACV, I eye-ball this.
Directions:
-I tend to weigh all of my ingredients first so I can input them into MFP. I try to be a precise as possible.
-Put a on pot of water to boil the pasta. While that is boiling, start cutting the chicken. I do it in small, bite-size pieces. I put it aside in a big glass bowl.
-Once the water is boiling, add the pasta. Add salt after adding the pasta and reduce the heat a little (best method I’ve got to get pasta perfectly al dente- if you don’t do it this way, my Italian grandmother will come after you with a wooden spoon).
-Cook it according to package directions. Usually with pasta made of beans you need to STIR CONSTANTLY! I usually do about 8 minutes.
-Once it’s cooked to your liking, strain and rinse the pasta. IMMEDIATELY pour it back into the empty boiling pot. Open the jarred artichoke and pour the oil into the pasta. Stir it gently. THIS IS SO THE PASTA DOESN’T STICK TOGETHER!
-Cut the artichoke and any veggies you are using. Add the chicken, artichoke, and veggies slowly to the pot. It is much easier to mix in here than tossing it in a salad bowl. Adding the other ingredients little by little helps mix it thoroughly and keep the pasta intact.
-Mix in your vinegar, seasoning, salt, and pepper. Add lemon juice and a bit of your creamy dressing (I usually only do a tbsp).
-Be sure you are weighing if you are going to be putting it into MFP or any other food diary.
This is enough to last me for 5 days. Put it all in a big container. If you are bringing it out with you, pack a serving in a smaller container.
Why I love this recipe so much:
-My TDEE is ~2300 cals, and I try for a ~300 cal deficit.
-This is packed with protein and fiber.
-It is moderate in calories, 700 cals, but I think it’s a good protein/calorie ratio.
-It has the potential to be low in processed food. Im lazy here and tend to get foods that are processed to do it, but this can def work with fresh veggies and chicken.
-I only get 20 mins for lunch and work a physically demanding pharmacy job. This lunch is yummy, can be eaten quickly, and is perfect to get me full and energized when I get hangry before my lunch break.
I hope you girls enjoy the recipe. Let me know if you have any questions or if you try to make it!

2024.04.28 20:30 Trandromeda Trip Report: Golden Route during sakura season and a wedding in Tokyo

Recently got back from an incredible 19 days in Japan. I’m really feeling the post-Japan blues now, but writing about the trip and sharing what I learned feels like a nice way to honour the memories I made.
I (35M) travelled to Japan with my partner (41M) from Canada. We were there from March 26 to April 13 - these dates were “chosen” for us because we were attending a wedding in Tokyo. We got to wear hakamas, walk in the procession at Meiji Jingu, and observe a Shinto wedding ceremony first-hand.
We did the Golden Route + Kanazawa, however, many travelers have already written about this route so I’ll try to offer new stories to interested readers instead.

About us and high-level trip summary:

Detailed report:

Before the flight

There were a few things we did before the trip began to help us out:

Landing in Japan

A note about the trains and ticketing system

I loved taking the shinkansen, they were so comfortable and predictable. The ticketing system, however... that’s a different story entirely. I think everyone just has to go through it like a rite of passage. I also couldn’t get SmartEx to work, which would’ve saved us a lot of hassle.
Regarding the JR West pass, I learned that you can’t make online seat reservations with it after you pick up the physical pass. You must use a specific machine or visit a ticket desk. To use the machines, find the ones with the green head boards and then select the option that mentions using a ‘discount ticket’ or something like that. Insert your pass and choose the destination and train you want to take. You’ll then get your pass back along with the printed tickets. Fortunately, there’s usually an attendant there to help you out.
I will miss having bento on the train while watching the scenery pass by (and listening to Fujii Kaze, haha).

March 26 - 28: A gentle introduction to Japan.

Places: Asakusa, Akihabara, Ueno, Ginza, and Chiyoda
Hotel: Route-Inn Grand Tokyo Asakusabashi
We chose this area because it was budget-friendly and gave us easy access to all the places we planned on visiting. A lot of people recommend staying in Asakusa, but we found Asakusabashi to be even quieter and cheaper.
Highlights:
Notes:

March 29 - April 3: Unforgettable memories made over a weekend.

Places: Shinjuku, Shibuya, teamLab, Kawaguchiko, and the wedding
Hotel: Yuen Shinjuku
Atmospheric hotel. Situated on a quiet street in Shinjuku while remaining within walking distance to all the fun places. Onsen on the top floor with amazing city views.
Highlight: The wedding
Highlight: Nichome
Other highlights:
Notes:

April 3 - 7: Embracing the calm after Tokyo.

Places: Hakone, Osaka, Himeji
Hotels: Mount View Hakone and Onyado Nono Osaka Yodoyabashi
The hotel in Hakone was itself the highlight. This one was a bit higher up in the mountains, but still easily accessible by bus. Top-notch hospitality and amenities. Our Osaka hotel was also comfortable and had an onsen and was located in a convenient area - not in the thick of things, but close to the important metro lines.
Highlights:
Notes:

April 7 - 10: Sakura, temples, and museums.

Places: Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima
Hotel: TUNESTAY Kyoto
A modern hotel that also feels like a hostel with its communal amenities and young vibe. Rest assured, the rooms are private and include your own bathroom. Minutes away from Kyoto Station and situated on the same street as the sightseeing buses.
Highlights:
Notes:

April 10 - 12: Winding down and enjoying small city life.

Places: Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go
Hotel: Hotel Kanazawa Zoushi
Our second favourite hotel of the trip. We had the warmest reception here, with complimentary tea and dango provided at check-in. The room was very comfortable, while the bathrooms were surprisingly spacious.
Highlights:
Notes:

April 12 - 13: One more outing in Tokyo’s most desirable neighbourhood.

Places: Kichijoji, departure
Hotel: Tokyu REI Kichijoji
Standard hotel with few frills, but great price and location. We chose it because it was a last minute decision to switch from Akihabara to Kichijoji for our last night.
Highlights:
Now that some time has passed since departing Japan, the emotions that swept over me in that country have left a deep mark. Like a reminder of what I’m chasing after in this life, Japan excited me, fulfilled me, and left me wanting more. I know that being Japanese in Japan is an entirely different experience, but I still yearn to experience even just a sliver of that life.
Thanks for reading and I hope you got something out of this trip report. If you’re interested in seeing some of the photos I took on this trip, I’ve shared them on my Instagram account, which is the same handle as my Reddit username.

2024.04.28 20:25 Lord_Long_Rod TERRIFYING DOGMAN ENCOUNTER!! Abducted by Dogman!

I called my uncle Roy yesterday. I had not heard from the old mountain man is a couple weeks, which was odd because he has been reaching out to me regularly in recent weeks. I called to check on him to see if he was ok.
Uncle Roy lives way up in the mountains of North Carolina. I have to reach him by satellite phone because he has no land line and there are no cell towers for miles and miles around. He lives completely off the grid.
So I dialed up Roy. The phone rang and rang. I thought that maybe he was busy at his still or skinning a Bigfoot or something. Then there was a pickup. I said “Hello? Hello? Uncle Roy, are you there?”
Nobody answered. It was quiet at first; too quiet. Then I heard a growling sound. It was real quiet at first, then rose in volume and ferocity. It sounded dog like, but from a really BIG dog. Then I heard another beast growling in the background. I could tell by the timbre of the second growl that it came from another source.
Then there was a blood curdling howl. It sounded as if I had accidentally dialed a hotline straight to Hell. The ungodly and demonic sounds coming through my receiver made me freeze in terror. I said “Uncle Roy?!? Are you there?!? What’s going on?!?!?!”
Then something happened because all hell broke loose on the other end. There were growls - vicious growls - and sounds of a struggle. Then I heard what sounded like a man letting out a battle cry, “AAHHHHHHHH!!!!” There were some thuds, more vicious growls, and then “Die ya sumbitch!”, followed by the sound of a yelping hurt dog. Then “BOOM!!” and another yelp. What in the heck was going on?!? It sounded like some kind of horrific murder scene.
Then uncle Roy picked up. “Who in tarnation this here be?” Roy asked in an agitated voice. I said “Uncle Roy? It’s me, The General! What’s going on?!? Are you ok?!?” Roy said “General? Well, Goddamn, boy! You has got ya sum Goddamn good timing, let me Tells ya! You jest saved my life, son!” He continued, “Looky here, General, I gots me sum unfinished bidnez here. Let me clean up this slop and I’ll give ya a ring in a little while. Don’t worry nun abouts me. I is fine now! Heh heh heh!”
So late last night uncle Roy called me back. He explained that he had been in an ordeal when I called, but he managed to get himself out of it. I asked him to tell me what happened, which he did. What follows is my transcription of uncle Roy’s story, kept as authentic as possible.
“Well sir, I had got my ass up early yesterday cuz I had to go down into town to pick me up a special package at the UPS store. I went on down there, picked it up, loaded it into the back of my old pick-em-up truck and headed home. When I got to me parking spot off the side of the road, I had my old mule, “Jethro” tide to a tree and a’watin fer me. I strapped the crate onta Jethro’s back and led that sumbitch up the side of the mountain and on inta Sasquatch Hollar. After a couple hours we made it to my cabin.”
“I unloaded that thar mule, then put him in the shed. I dragged my package inside and fetched me crowbar to open her up. Well, I pried it open, pulled out all that thar protective wrap, and there she was: Ariana Grande!!”
I paused and then asked, “Ariana Grande? What? You mean that idiot singer?” Roy replied, “Yep, that’s who I mean.”
I start thinking, “Oh shit... Roy kidnapped that ditzy pop singer out of some sort of preternatural attraction. He is going to make her into some kind of farm-hand/sex-slave.” I said, “Roy, is she ... alive?” Roy responded, “Fuck no, boy, she ain’t alive. She’s fer fuckin”. That did not make me feel any better.
I love my Uncke Roy. But he is a very peculiar man who is not troubled by things like morality and laws. I know Roy has done some messed up stuff, but abduction and necrophilia had never crossed my mind.
I said “Roy, you got to get rid of her body. She’s a pop star. They are going to be looking for her. Uncle Roy, you can’t do this”. Roy responded, “What the fuck is you goin on about, boy?”. I told him “Roy, you have possession of a dead celebrity and you want to fuck it. Goddamn, that’s sick!”
Uncle Roy then broke out laughing. He said, “You fucking asshole! She ain’t no real girl. This here is one of them thar sex robots. It cost me a pretty penny too. I wanted one that looked like Gwen Stefani, but they wanted too much money fer that one. They gives me a big discount if’s I take one of them thar Arianna Grande models. I don’t even know who in the hell she is, but she looks like one of them thar hybrid girls, you know, half white and half somethin er other.”
Ah, a sex robot. Uncle Roy got a sex robot. I was relieved. After I realized my mistake I turned my attention back to the story and what the hell happened earlier. I asked Roy to continue.
“So, I got that Grande doll out of the box and sat it there on the couch. I sed to her ‘My, ain’t you a purty thang! Now git in that thar kitchen and fixes me up sum grub. GIT!’. But, that robot didn’t move one anch. I commanded her agin. Nuthin. I thought to myself ‘either this thang is broke er it’s so lifelike that it’s got a bitch’s attitude and needs to be treated jest right to werk.’ So I decided to give it another try.”
“I sits down next to Ariana, puts my arm around her, and puts my other hand high on the ham. I then leaned over and gave her a soft kiss on the cheek. I said, ‘Baby, go whips me up sum vittles and I’ll let ya suck my cock while I eats em.’ Still, nothin.”
“So I figured she wuz playing hard to git, and I wuz Not havin me any of that. So I grabbed that bitch by the hair and punched her in the throat, repeatly. Well, apparently, I hit her too goddamn hard cuz her hed came off in my hand. ‘SHIT!!’, I yelled. This cheap motherfucker dun fell apart before I even git ta fuck her.”
“So I studied the situation and cyphered that I best git what I can while I can. I pulled out my old wang and stuck it in her mouth while I held the severed hed to my crotch. Nuthin. Now, I bought this fucking thang because it’s a robot and supposed to move and act like a real woman. I wuz gettin a might pissed. I tried harder, face-fucking that thar thang. Nuthin.”
“I yelled ‘FUCK!!’, and slung that Ariana Grande head agin the wall. It hit with a loud ‘THUD’ and then fell on the floor. Then a thought hit me. Maybe this thang needs to be turned on. It is a robot after all. Shit, fer that matter it prolly needs to be charged up. Well, sir, I knew how to rectify this here situation.
“I dragged that headless Ariana Grande doll body out to my shed where I kept my tractor. So what I did wuz I got me a pair of jumper cables and attached them to the battry on my John Deere. I cranked that muthafuka ta life and then I attached the other end to Ariana by clamping them to her little wine-glass titties. As I did I sed, ‘Oh, excuse me, Ms. Grande’, as I chuckled to myself.”
“After a minute of chargin, that old headless Grande doll started smoking. I wuz all fandangled, and let out a ‘SHIT FIRE!!!’ Her little titties were a’ meltin!! I frantically unhooked the bitch and put out the far. Dejected and defeated, I dragged that robotic bitch back inta my cabin.”
“So there she wuz, laying on my living room floor, right on my Sasquatch skin rug, the severed Grande robot hed and its topless body with burned-up titties. I decided to study on this situation a bit while I eats me sum vittles.”
“I had me sound ground Bigfoot meat thawin out, and it wuz ready to fix up. I wuz planning on making me up sum Sasquatch burgers. Now, ya got to understand that Sasquatch meat ain’t like no cow or pig meat. This Bigfoot meat is sum nasty shit. First of all, it’s dark meat. And I mean it is black! It is also greasy as goose shit. It’s kind of like bar meat, but nastier.”
“You cain’t jest mold Bigfoot meat inta a burger, ya see. You gots to put sum stuff inta it to make it mold together. You can mix ya in some hamburger meat, or bread crumbs, or whatever. But tonight I had me sumthang REAL special to mix in. I had acquired me sum fresh hawg semen and cow blood! I got it down at the local slaughter house. They jest give that shit away!!!”
“What I like to do is put that old Sasquatch meat in a big old bowl, all ground up, then poor in the blood and semen. Then I roll up my sleeves and dive in with my hands, grinding and squeezing and mixin it all up. See, hog jizz is a lot thicker than human jizz. It’s also a lot tastier, lending a nice bouillabaisse note to the dish. The cow blood gives it a nice tangy body. I also like to ad some A-1 sauce to da mix.”
“Now, Son, ya got to bear sumthang in mind here. Yer old Uncle Roy is gettin on up thar in years. In fact, I don’t even know how old I is. But I do know that sumtimes I slip up whar I used to be sharp as a whip. This here wuz one of those days.”
“Ya see, I had kilt me a big old 10’ tall Sasquatch a couple week ago. That skanky sumbitch came a creepin’ up to my shed in the dead of night. They know that’s whar I stash sum of my hooch, and they like to sneak in there and get ‘em a sip. What that sumbitch did not know is that I been havin sum run-ins with them thar damn dogmans lately and I wuz out and about on my property.”
“Now, Son, I know ya know what a dogman is. They is basically a werewolf. The sumbitches is wolves but they can stand and walk on 2 legs like a man. They anywhere from 7’ to 15’ tall, and they is pure evil! They also is dangerous. They a lot more dangerous than a Bigfoot.”
“Them thar Bigfoots Are Big, dumb apes. BUT, they is smart enough to know when they been whipped. Ya see, me and then sumbitches pretty much got us an understanding that if they don’t fuck with me, then I won’t kill ‘em. Therefore, they give me my space. That sed, they will still fuck round witcha, like sneaking around trying to steal your shine stash, just like a bunch of naggers.”
“But these damn dogmen ain’t like that. Oh, sure, they is smart. But they ain’t got no self-awareness like a Bigfoot. They am full o hate! A Bigfoot will contemplate, it will study a situation. That old dog man, he is pure evil straight from hell. They ain’t worth a shit fer eatin either. They taste like sulfur! I don’t want anything to do with them nasty beasts. When I Kills em I jest drag em off my mountain and set the nasty turds on fire.”
“So, a pack of them thar dogmans came through Sasquatch Hollar. I knowed they been fucking around on my homestead cuz I seen the paw prints. We ain’t got us none of them thar wolves here in North Carolina. So, when you see them really big canine tracks suddenly show up on your property, you can know they is dogman.”
So, there I wuz, on my rooftop, with a jug of shine and a 6.5 Creedmore rifle with nightvision optics. I wuz a’plannin to kill me sum dogman scum when up came this dumbass old Sasquatch, slinking up to my old shed to get him a nip of Old Roy’s mountain shine.”
“I watched that Bigfoot fer a long time, peeking out from behind trees, tiptoeing closer a little at a time, craning his neck to make sure nobody wuz around, then tiptoeing sum more. It wuz Goddamn pathetic! Them Bigfoots are nuthin but giant pussies. It took that dumb bitch 10 minutes to get from the hard woodline to the door of my shed.”
“That old Sasquatch did not know I wuz anywhar around. I had been following it’s movement through the nightvision scope on my rifle. By the time it got to my cabin I had flipped the safety off. Then it got to my shed. It stepped up to the shed door, slowly put its paw on the door latch, then looked to its left. Then it looked to the right, slowly turning its entire upper body in that direction. Then it turned back to the shed door, presumably about to enter.”
“BOOM!!!!!” The report of the 6.5 blast wuz a’ deafening! That critter’s head exploded like a cantaloupe, splattering blood and brain everywhar! It wuz a glorious sight to behold!”
“I decided I would let that dead critter lay where it died fer a spell as bait fer them sumbitchin Dogmans. Unfortunately, it didn’t werk that night, or else they jest don’t like Bigfoot meat. They is, after all, natural enemies of each other, the dogman and the Sasquatch.”
“So, at dawn, I dragged that headless Bigfoot into my cabin and laid it out on my kitchen counter. Any veteran Sasquatcher knows that you got to tenderize that critter a’fer ya can eat it. Only a newb skins a Sasquatch and throws it right on the grill. So I commenced to beaten the corpse with a mallet. Then, I wuz gonna jest let it lay there an rot fer a few days, like how ya age beef. It won’t hurt ya one bit to rot yer meat a bit a’fer eatin it.”
“Now here’s a’where I fucked up. I needed to gut that sumbitchin critter. But, I had received a cyber notice that a new amateur video of an Asian chick being fucked on a public bus Had jest been uploaded on Pornhub. I decided to take me a look at it, then gut the squatch later. Well, later never come. I fell asleep and then totally fergot about the task. That dead critter laid out on my kitchen counter fer a good 2 weeks, it did. I guess I jest kind of assumed the cleaning job wuz all dun.”
“So, fast-forward ahead and there I wuz, gettin ready to fix me sum Sasquatch burgers. I had my ground up Bigfoot meat all mixed up in a bowl with hog jism and cow blood, and completely in the dark on the current internal chemical happenins with that Bigfoot corpse laid out on my kitchen counter. I noticed it wuz gettin a’kind of bloated. But I did not know that it was because of all those internal gases buildin’ up in the dead critter’s body cavity. I sure as shit did not know it wuz about to explode!”
“Then it happened. KA-BOOOOOOM!!! That Sasquatch corpse a’layin’ on my counter plum exploded!! Rotten Bigfoot guts and blood went everywhere! It covered my kitchen and my livinroom. Everthang!”
“Well sir, I wuz pissed! I started throwin shit, and tearin up shit. I even drew my .44 magum and started blasting shit. Then I saw that goddamn headless Ariana Grande robot layin on the floor. ‘Fuck it’, I thought. ‘Jest FUCK IT!’ So I took down my draws and raped that thang!!”
“Well, I did not know - because of all the goins on in my cabin - that a couple of them thar nasty Dogmans had snuck up and was a’watchin me through the winder. What a sight they must have seen! There I wuz, in the middle of a blood and gut soaked scene, bare-assed and fucking that headless doll.”
“That scene must’ve driven them Dogmans inta a hot-n-heavy, horny, murder frenzy, cuz they smashed down my door, grabbed me and the headless Grande robot, and dragged us off into the woods. Man, I was a’scairt! These Dogmans were big. They both stood a good 12’ tall, or MORE!”
“Those rotten critters dragged me off into their lair, a cave just the other side of Poltergeist Ridge. They throwed me down against the far cave wall. Then they turned their attention to the doll. They both had ‘em a couple big old red shankers stickin out of their loins. They would sniff the doll, then try to mount it. The holes weren’t big enough to accommodate their big dog wangs, so they would get all frustrated and growl at the robot, then they would try agin.”
“Now, this is where the shit got weird. I could not escape because them infernal dogman beasts were a’blocking the entrance to the cave. And I was admittedly amused by the sight of these goddamn thangs trying to get it on with a doll. I could not contain myself and let out a’laughin at them. I sed, ‘You stupid sumbitches!! Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!’ That’s when they dropped the robot and both turned in my direction, throbbing erections pointed right at me. ‘Uh Oh!’, I thought.”
“Those two Dogmans began moving toward me. I knew they intended to make luv on me, doggy style. That’s when my satellite phone started ringing. I pulled that sumbitch out of the case on my gun belt, but before I could answer it, the dogman on the left swatted it outa my hand. Then they turned their attention on the ringing phone.”
“Them damn thangs were all agitated by the ranging and were a’swipin at it. They musta hit ‘answer’, and that’s when you heard all the growlin’. When they heard your voice on it they went crazy! They musta thunk you wuz inside the phone and it perplexed them.”
“With them dogmen distracted by the phone, I decided it wuz time to make my move. I bolted forward and grabbed what wuz left of that Ariana Grande sex doll -pretty much just the torso - and used it as a club, beating the shit out of them thar dogman critters. I wuz a’fightin fer my life!”
“I wuz a’swangin old Ariana around and a’whackin them critters off! I remembered the Kabar knife on my belt and whipped out that sumbitch. Then I used Ariana as a shield. I closed in on the first critter, which wuz already wounded, and stabbed it right in its heart. It let out an unholy ‘yelp’ as I hit the organ.”
“Then the other dogman lunged at me. In one motion I swiftly withdrew the long knife from the heart of the first critter and slashed at the second one, slicing its hard-on clean off. Then that one let out a yelp and a cry of pain as it reached down and grabbed its crotch. I sed, ‘Take that, bitch!’, and thrust my blade into its heart. ‘Boom!’, it hit the ground!”
“Both them motherfuckers were ded! Then I answered the phone, and it twere you, General. You saved my life!”
Roy went on to tell me that he burned the bodies of the Dogman creatures, and the Ariana Grande fuckbot. He then went into town to see his insurance man to file a claim on his homeowners policy for the mess at his cabin. He checked into a local hotel called “The Sasquatch Inn” while ServPro is out at his home cleaning up the mess. After he got settled in for the night he called me and told me this encounter story.

2024.04.28 19:59 PleasantCrow4724 Feedback on Iceland Plan

Hi,
My boyfriend and I will be visiting Iceland for the first time in the beginning of November and have a draft itinerary. We'd appreciate any feedback about whether we have too much planned on a particular day or if something should be moved around.
Most days we'll aim to get to our first stop around sunrise and get to our last stop before the hotel by sunset. We've put everything into google maps and factored in spending some time at the stops and eating lunch. It seems doable but I know the weather in November is unpredictable, and google maps times aren't necessarily accurate. Also, only the first two hotels, the rental car, and our flights have been purchased already.
Thank you in advance!!
Day 1: Reykjavik
Day 2: Golden Circle
Day 3: Vik
Day 4: Ice Cave + Glacier Hike on Vatnajokull with Local Guide
Day 5: East Iceland to Seydisfjordur
Day 6: Lake Myvatn Area
Day 7: Akureyri to Snaefellsnes
Day 8: Snaefellsnes to Reykjavik
Day 9: KEF Airport

2024.04.28 19:47 Boggins26 The Case of the Terrible Typos

The Case of the Terrible Typos
I picked up cheap copies of both Blue Train and Brown Suit, as hadn’t read either in years and realised they were the only two missing from my Christie collection. They must be new reprints but there are multiple typos on every single page, it’s so distracting to read. Errors in spacing, punctuation, names spelled differently each time: but can you spot the most egregious mistake here?!

2024.04.28 19:01 BanginHeavies Question about drinks

I’ve read the FAQ, and I’ve googled this, but I’m still a bit confused. I’ve sailed about 10 times now and can’t quite figure out some drink details. I always get the deluxe beverage package, but my two main points of confusion are orange juice and coffee. Up in the buffet area, sometimes I’ll see a fresh squeezed orange juice station. Is that included? (Only reason I ask is because I feel like there was a sign that said additional charge or something, similar to the sign/info when you get one of those drinks in a pineapple by the pool- it’s still an up charge even with the DBP).
Secondly, coffee. I’m a guy who likes a splash of Bailey’s or something in my coffee. I know there was a little cafe area on my last ship with coffee, fruit cups, snacks, etc. and that was included. You could also get a splash of something extra in your coffee. But I’m reading that some coffee isn’t included, like Starbucks. Is that like, if there is an actual Starbucks on your ship? Or if it’s Starbucks branded coffee? I only have sailed on the “smaller” ships like Independence, Freedom, etc, so I’m not sure how the coffee places change as the ship gets bigger.
So I guess maybe the best question may be, if you have the deluxe package, what ISNT included?
Thank you

Hand soap packaging..... which do you choose?
They always release multiple packaging styles of the same thing. White Tea & Sage hand soap as an example, there are three different packaging options and they are all the same price today. Which are you likely to choose and why?
Also, I know the foam and gel (fourth image) are not the same, but for those that choose the gel over the foam (or vice versa), why? Just curious.
Side note, I LOVE WT&S as a home scent. It kind of smells like a luxury 5-star hotel lobby. Really fresh and rich-smelling. I've been using BBW since the 90s and this is one of the most solid home scents they've ever had.

Last UK Review: Slime Innit/Octopi/Slimer Climber & Final Word on UK Slimes (with pics!)
This is going to be my last UK slime shop review for a while as I will be concentrating on international stores going forward. What a fun journey it has been so far! If you’ve missed my other reviews please check out my post history on my profile and feel free to give my account a follow to keep up with future slime reviews also! At the end of this review I’m going to give my personal recommendations/opinion on UK slime shops which I hope this will be of use to new UK slimers!

Slime Innit (Etsy UK)
The packaging is gorgeous!
Their containers are 7 ounces for £6.70.
I love larger containers of at least 8oz and there does seem to be a trend in the UK towards 5oz pots so I really appreciate Slime Innit’s generous pots for such an incredibly reasonable price! This shop pulls out ALL the stops when it comes to aesthetic and presentation. Every one of these slimes are a piece of art with a style that appeals more to discerning adult slimers. Their lack of the typical pastel, kawaii themes is very refreshing and their individual labelling is retro, more mature and classy. I took a closer look at their labels and they are gloss but not waterproof. The gloss allows you to wipe slime off without destroying the label so is better than plain paper but you have to be careful as it doesn't slide off like it does on a genuine waterproof label. I previously reviewed the Flumpy Cake Butter slime and gave it a 10/10 because I truly fell in love with everything about it. This time I purchased one of their gift boxes to investigate it in in the flesh and it was gorgeous! They sent me an incredibly generous free pot of slime and a metric ton of ready mixed activator.

  • RAINBOW LEOPARD (butter, fruity berry scented)
The berry scent was soft and sweet with notes of candy and florals more so than fruit. Slime Innit have one of my favorite butter textures. It’s so matte, chewy, chubby, flubby, holadable, spreadable and crazy stretchy. It has a nice, bassy finger click, great bubble pops and tons of soft sizzles. This formula inflates a ton and is great fun to play with.
What an eyeful! I love the leopard spots!
  • STRAWBERRY SQUIDGE CAKE (butter layered with bingsu, strawberry scented)
I got a nice fresh strawberries and cream, slight candy leaning scent from this slime. I’m not generally a bingsu fan but it was far more enjoyable in this texture as it’s so soft on the hands and helped bring on soft sizzles which I’m a sucker for. The slime combined in to a really pretty peachy pink which was very much flattered by the bingsu, like pink sugar cookie batter. It was a little bit stickier than the last and needed a few puffs of activator. The previous slime was chubbier and far more inflatable but the bingsu sizzles provided me with the most satisfying ASMR.
First opened and after play.

  • CHOCCY SWIRL (light floam butter, chocolate orange scented)
The chocolate orange scent was great but I would’ve personally loved it to have been a bit stronger! I love this company's takes on iconic British confectionery (I don’t know if international slimers are familiar with a Terry’s chocolate orange, a super cute chocolate in the shape of a whole orange which breaks into segments when you bang it on the tabletop.) This slime came with a foam balls you add yourself and turned it into very sparse butter floam. The balls like to rise to the surface which looked really cool but I barely got any dropout. This formula was similar to the strawberry one above and a little bit more moist. My favorite formulas from this company other ones leaning towards the slightly dryematte and super inflatable but this was massive on the soft sizzles, which I love.
First opened/inflated.

  • FOOL’S GOLD (Pigmented clear with hard golden nuggets and gemstones, mango scent)
This was such a beautiful looking slime I thought I would treat myself to the gift box too. The gift box label is even unique to the slime inside which I think is a lovely touch. It is a beautiful, robust cardboard tube. I can’t really think of any other slime companies that offer beautiful gift packaging like this! The box contained candies and yet more borax. The slime was just so stunning and lush with little diamonds and golden nuggets! It felt very decadent and mature.
I wasn’t strictly getting mango from this but it was a subtle, pleasant, fruity, perfume-leaning scent, I very much liked it. This slime was an absolute eyeful, like playing with liquid gold. It needed bit of activator but was stretchy and beautiful with all the crackle, pops and clicks you could wish for, plus no drop out. I was intrigued to see what it would look like at the end of play/post inflation and it actually held its colour fairy well for a clear, turning into a sparkly golden caramel. I’ve never been able to capture the sparkle that remains post play in any metallic clear on camera but it is pretty. Uncoated clears are not a beginner texture so your milage may vary but this is one hell of a stunning slime!
This beautiful packaging costs an additional £3.00 and has candies and borax It would make an incredibly special gift for a slimer!
Pre and post play. It was still sparkly but the camera never plays ball.
I couldn't get over how pretty this was with the beautiful golden nuggets.

  • OCEAN TWILIGHT (pigmented clear with pinch of slushee beads, blueberry)
This was a full sized slime as a free gift, so kind of them! It was softly scented of candy blueberries. This was a stunning slime, deep emerald green with contrasting purple glitter and gemstones which reflected the multitude of green and blue colour tones within the slime. It was the only one that called for a fair bit of activator but was fun to play with and behaved well after I took the tackiness down. It turned into a dark seafoam green post play which was cool considering the ocean theme!
This was a super pretty slime that reminded me of a dark, moody ocean at night.
It held its colour very well and was still so pretty after inflation.
I hold Slime Innit in very high regard and love their inflating, matte, fluffy butter texture. The down side is that their line is currently quite limited but every single slime is a well thought out work of art. I very much hope they continue to grow as the effort they put into their aesthetic is so impressive for the UK and their beautiful gift packaging option is something that is rare to find from any slime company. Coatings on the clear slimes and waterproof labels would be the icing on the cake! My favourite slime by them by far is the Flumpy Cake Butter in terms of texture and scent but they have tremendous potential! I did speak to them about international shipping and they said it was something they were thinking about for the future. 9.8/10

Octopi Slime (UK shop)
5-8 ounces from £4.70-£5.65. Came with a free sample in a mini deli pot. Individually designed labels per slime which are not waterproof.

  • A TOAST, TO THE NEW YEAR! (butter with pony beads, lychee/caramel scented)
The scent was quite faint, I was picking up a little waft of the caramel notes. This was a very dense, light weight butter with a very smooth, dry, satiny surface. Another that was somewhat reminiscent of the Peachybbies butters (but nicer and with none of the oiliness) with a bit of a memory dough feel. Very holdable, spreadable and reminiscent of a memory foam stress toy in hand. It had a lot of resistance on the stretch. It was a little touch towards the dry and rippy end of the scale and called for slow stretching (or a little splash of distilled water should you wish, that works very well to make it a little more fluffy and moist.) It would be an excellent texture for a beginner and is quite pleasant in hand but is not a big, airy, fluffy type of butter.
before and after play.

  • DANDELION PUDDING (T&G, mango/vanilla scented)
I was getting a mild hint of vanilla scent from this but a chemical element overwhelmed it. It was a little bit under-activated and sticky and called for a good splash of activator. Unfortunately, the amount of activator needed to eventually take the stickiness back ended up making it a bit rippy.
Before and after play

  • MINI MARSHMALLOW (floam, melted marshmallow scent)
I can’t say I picked up much in the way of a scent from this slime but the texture was good and really pleasing in the hands. Mixed size foam balls in a slime-to-ball ratio I particularly prefer (I don't like floams which are too dense on the foam balls) and great crackle and pops. Larger ball floam is always a super fun texture to play with and this shop did it well!
Before and after play.

  • LIME WATER (coated clear, sweet water scent)
For a coated clear this is very sticky and I don’t feel the perfume scent fits the theme at all, a fresh citrus would have worked better here. Nonetheless fun to inflate, click and pop but not what I’d expect from a coated clear.
Before and after play.

  • MOON DUST (white glue sand, lemon sherbet scented)
A dense sand slime which was available in a 5 or 8oz size. This is the 8oz. The colour, texture and glitter really did remind me of the moon/space and I loved the theme. The lemon scent is not bad and quite fresh. The texture is pleasant and well activated. I really liked this slime. It’s not too sand dense giving it some great bubble pops. There was very minimal sand fall out.
Before and after play.

  • STYGIAN IRON (icee/clear float, coffee scented)
A faint hint of coffee. This came out the pot extremely wet on its surface but combined into a non-sticky jelly. The texture is nice and feels well activated. The coffee scent comes forward a bit more as you play.
Before and after play.
This company was a little hit and miss for me, but the hits were very nice and I liked the unusual, darker themes. 7/10

Slimer Climber (UK webshop)
5oz pots, most priced at £7.95. Small, simplistic paper labels with the name and scent printed on them. I very much like the idea of the scent being listed on a label, especially as a reviewer. Sometimes I can't quite put my finger on a scent so go to the website to determine it, just to find that there are in the pre-restock stage and you can only see the holding page.

  • GRAYLING (cloud, cotton and ink scent)
A super cool concept with the delicate silver leaf which crumbles to powder when touched, one of the few add-ins (along with fine glitter) that is good idea in cloud slime as metal leaf is incredibly light and clingy so I was excited. Unfortunately, to my surprise and disapointment, the scent was profoundly unpleasant, something I have never said of any slime before. There were notes of cotton but what ever the “ink” was supposed to be just smelled like the slime had gone off, it was sour, musty and nauseating. This was a great shame as it seemed like it could have been a nice cloud slime with a potentially good drizzle otherwise.
Cloud is my favourite texture and SO difficult to find in its pure form (i.e. not a cloud dough or creme) so the scent was a terrible shame. I’m afraid the scent got the better of me, I couldn’t get past it as I genuinely wasn’t sure if it were by design or literally some terrible microbial bloom. I know scents are very subjective but I can’t imagine who would find this one enjoyable. Due to this I never got to warm it up and test the drizzle.
Assembled with silver lead and returned to its pot.

  • HE IS RISEN (jelly x icee x sand, banana bread scent)
Unfortunately, I noted a small hair in this slime upon opening, as is visible in the photo. This did put me off and wasn’t an encouraging follow up to Grayling’s problematic scent. That aside, this was a pretty good banana bread scent and had an interesting hybrid texture that looked like mashed banana. I tried to look past the hair and braved it to find it quite sticky and needing repeat activation. It inflated a bit and had some good bubble pops but the stickiness did persist.
before and after play.

  • EGG SHELLS (floam, mint choc scent)
I found the scent accurate and quite pleasant with definite ice cream notes. However, sadly this was under-activated and extremely loose and sticky. A lot of activator later and it remained to be quite sticky. I appreciate you can work with a slime and get it into a better state but I’ve been spoilt by slimes from all over the world that are perfect out the pot, even after an international journey. I don’t really see what excuse there is when the slime was shipped from within the UK. If I wanted to deal with slimes that needed this much activation, I’d just make my own.

First opened and after some effort with activator.

· BUBBLEWRAP (jelly x floam, unscented)
This slime also called for a good few squirts of activator and came together initially. However, upon stretching, it did start to get much too loose and sticky again and I’m afraid I really was losing heart by these slimes at that point. A sad shame as I very much liked this texture as I’m a big fan of large sized foam balls. Some of them squeaked with a little squeeze which is always fun. In the periods during which it behaved, it had a nice texture.
Before and after play.

  • MOTH COOCHIE COOKIE (jelly x clay, “midnight air” scented)
When I first saw this hilarious coochie slime I had to have it! Haha! The scent of the base is a pleasant, dark, musky perfume. Unfortunately, upon opening the clay, I found it had a very musty scent and was totally dried out, rippy and rubbery. With a second slime smelling musty I really did feel concerned that I could be dealing with slimes well past their best and was worried about the potential for mould spores. For the sake of the review I popped on some gloves and a mask and quickly combined it. It turned a nice lilac color but was quite stiff, dried out and rippy.
Before and after play.
This was a very regrettable experience as I had seen this shop recommended on this sub previously and I thought their slimes looked quite mature, interesting and different with bit of a darker gothic vibe which appealed to me. Their website was well put together and seemed professional too. I think it’s important to remember that many UK slime stores are of a smaller, hobby-leaning nature. These slimes are generally not created in factory style production lines within a clinically set up warehouse like in the States but rather in a small creator’s home….and life and oversights happen to us all.
Clearly, a considerable amount of thought was put into the ideas behind these and you never know what could be happening in someone’s life to take them off their A game. It’s very possible I just got unlucky and just got a one-off bad batch from Slimer Climber. I shopped between restocks and perhaps got some less popular slimes that had reached the end of their useful lives. Its every bit possible that the next person to purchase from this store will have a stellar experience. To boot, some slime shops which had bad reviews a year ago have great reviews today, such is the nature of slime and things can and do change. For now a regrettable 2/10

FINAL THOUGHTS ON UK SLIMES!
Some of the slime experiences I have had in the UK have been really good and others extremely disappointing. Ultimately, the good slime shops are thin on the ground here and the high end, professional, small factor level seen in the States isn't really a thing. The final review above really drove it home to me that I would have to be more discerning as to where I purchased from as hygiene is extremely important to me and I don't want to risk coming into contact with concerning microbes or huffing mould spores. I want to be certain that appropriate PPE such as gloves are worn by those producing and handling the slime and that it is perfectly fresh and well activated on arrival. I also wish for highly professional looking slimes in terms of labelling, aesthetic, presentation, consistency and reliability and I’m happy to pay more to best achieve this experience. The conclusion I have come to is that my slime tastes and wishes will be more closely met by international slime stores at this stage.
I have found a few really solid slime stores in the UK which I will be delighted to support going forward. Some of the UK stores previously recommended on this sub seem to no longer be operational, which is again testament to the fact that UK operations are often small and fleeting rather than the more impressively sized, team run professional enterprises seen in the USA.
If I could only shop from one store in the UK in order to meet my various textural needs, this would be Hotch Potch Slime. I would recommend them as a fantastic choice for any UK slimer, both new and well seasoned. I was very impressed by the recipes and consistency/textures/scents of all their slimes. Especially their cloud, coated clear, jelly cube and lotion texture. In fact, their mint green sparkle cloud remains to be my favourite cloud slime worldwide. You can find my review of their slimes here.
Honourable mentions go to Slime Innit, Gaza Slimes, Totogi Slimes, Emma Bee and Slime Screwball and Duck Duck Slime. Tap on their names to see my reviews.
See you again on the next review! I'm going to be looking at slimes from the USA, Korea and Japan going forward and can't wait!

2024.04.28 17:04 Avocadosandtomatoes Are there any “self drive” vacation tours?

I have a buddy that is about to head to Iceland for a self drive tour around the country staying at multiple hotels and has a car rental included in his package. It includes many stops along the way for sight seeing or things to do.
I’m wondering if there’s something similar in Puerto Rico?
We’re interested in doing some hikes, swimming in/seeing waterfalls, beaches, near shore snorkeling, eating, etc.
I’m from Florida if it matters.

2024.04.28 15:42 EvilInCider Letter before action - package holiday

Hi all, I have asked something similar before but no response as such -
We are writing a LBA to a package holiday provider.
We were delayed nearly 24 hours so they put us up in a hotel, very very low quality. Horrific actually.
Got the flight compensation no problem.
I need to understand what our rights were as being put up in a hotel - I’m struggling to find information. We had no means of contacting a Rep which I thought might be a requirement. They didn’t give us means of contacting anyone at home. We had no access to toiletries (unsafe to leave the location at night and everyone had obviously thrown everything away the night before).
Couldn’t have breakfast in the morning due to breakfast opening at 7 and the requirement to be at the waiting point for the coach at 0715.
On the actual holiday itself, the pool was closed for two full days due to an outbreak of sickness (cruise boat). This included a full sea day - we booked this because it included access to a pool. Can we claim for this?
We booked a premium drinks package and they acknowledged in email there were global shortages so they were unable to offer us what we wanted. Can we claim for our money back? They’ve refused all compensation for anything at all.
Thank you for any help with this.

2024.04.28 14:57 pohltergiest Grinding up Fuji

Grinding up Fuji
We woke at dawn, having slept quite well. I crawled out of the tent to see a dawn walkers, scowling. I'd scowl too if I was an old ass dawn walker. Whatever. We packed up and got going to avoid anyone giving us grief, even before 6am we were on the road. And it was good, as even at 6am, it was getting warm in the sun. The forecast was for 28 degrees where we were, that wouldn't do for a day of climbing!
Bryce nudged me to look up, and we were treated to an unfettered view of Fuji, blue and crisp against a light blue sky. A good omen to begin our work for the day.
We visited a 7-11 for breakfast as nothing else is open that early and Bryce managed to break the payment machine. The poor lady was trying her best to figure out the procure to clear the problem in a rather complex machine, coins are very common in japan and these machines operate at high speed, so she had to go through some diagnostic windows to make it happen. Bryce turned red with embarrassment as she pulled out a small mountain of coins he had dumped in, but when she pulled out the toothpick to pry out the problem he turned as purple as his hair. Honestly from an engineering perspective, a public facing machine in a 24hr chain that can't handle a piece of wrapper that got in the change is surprising to me. I would think the machine could handle ejection of non-coin items. At the very least I was glad I got to see the inner workings of one of these machines, they're mesmerizing how quickly they operate.
After sunscreen and eating a breakfast of coffee, a smoothie, and a peanut pastry and a strawberry pastry, we were off. The peanut butter here is "peanut cream" and is more sugar than anything, the strawberry pastry was a straight up eclair masquerading as "food". Honestly this country survives off empty carbs, if people didn't have small portion sizes I don't know how anyone would manage their weight.
Our first destination was Tanuki lake, the first lake we'd see in a string. There are the famous Fuji Five Lakes, but I thought I'd be extra cheeky and plan for six. Our mapping app took us up through back roads between town areas, which mercifully kept us in the shade as we ground up the hill. Lake Tanuki would be half of the grind for the day, so it was a long one. I wanted to see the waterfall nearby, but my brain quickly turned to mush from the climbing. We generally ride at the pace I can handle, which means I always suffer at the same rate (though faster all the time!) I didn't have many thoughts aside from various curses and worries of the temperature rising.
We came across a temple complex with many administration buildings, apparently the head of a sect. I wonder how many Buddhist and Shinto sects there are in Japan? We've seen the head of a few sects, I suppose it takes a lot of coordination to keep it all running. These buildings were all modern but had many extremely large halls that looked like they could hold thousands. Lots of residence looking buildings too, maybe a place where clergy come to meet? I haven't even the slightest clue how religious administration works here.
The main thing to look at was of course Fuji, each new view showing a different angle with a new dressing of clouds. It seemed a cold wind was blowing from the north around the mountain and impacting a warm mass on the south, making a ring of clouds form. Otherwise it was just quiet cedars to keep us company as we went up and up and up.
Arriving at Lake tanuki, we stopped to dip our hands in the first lake. The clear blue waters reflected Fuji brilliantly and we could see why people love the lakes in this region so much. The beautiful mountains ringing the back side of the lake were the perfect opposition to Fuji looming in the distance. This lake had many people fishing, we watched one man pull in a medium sized fish. Looked fun.
The second lake was going to be nearly as much climb as the first, and I was a little nervous heading into a national park that we wouldn't find food to eat. We stopped and got some food bars and other things to eat at a park later, but some hours later we got up on the high plateau that rings the north side of Fuji and found, of course, well developed tourist areas to stop at. Bryce picked out a local beer and I picked out a custard, seeing that they were serving locally made cream products. We also saw they had ice cream, and when I saw it was local I made sure we got the premium vanilla. Sure enough, it was the best ice cream we've had, amazingly creamy. Even better than the mt Aso ice cream, which we didn't think could be topped. The custard was second best, delicious and full of flavour. The beer though, followed the trend of a immature craft beer scene in japan. It's just not there yet. Most of what we've seen is beer made as a souvenir rather than a good product, like the beer made for a rollercoaster.
While we were enjoying our treats, we saw a flyer for a festival happening. I immediately recognized what it was, it was the Shibazakura festival, the flowers known as moss phlox in English. We simply had to go, the pictures of neon pink fields of flowers had me hooked. Lucky for us, it was on our path and not far up the road. The plateau here was open, burned to make land for cattle the same as Aso. We had no cover from the sun, but we also had a great view of Fuji to our right and to our left we could watch paragliders circling up the mountains like hawks on thermals. Then we saw hawks circling on thermals and thought we'd seen it all.
Cars were lined up for an awful long way on the highway as we approached the festival, a real shame for them. We on the other hand, just rode into the site and parked near the ticket gate. I figured it would be busy but it was heckin busy. We waited a while to buy a ticket and enter, and then got to see the fields. Beautiful beds of three shades of pink, as well as white, baby blue and lavender Shibazakura were there, as well as purple muscari and one flower I didn't catch the name of. Bryce and I had a capital time weaving around the beds, dodging folks taking photos. It was very hot in the sun so we didn't wait for the cute photo ops, but we got plenty of photos anyways. We were hungry for food at this point, so we got some fried chicken, a basket of long fries, and two kebabs. The long fries are around 20cm long and are extruded potato, kind of like how McDonald's makes theirs. Just, yenno, long.
Fuji lake two was next, this one having a shoreline composed of volcanic rock gravel. I was cooking by this point, so we went down to the shore and I took off my shoes and socks and waded a little bit to cool off. The rocks were very sharp so it wasn't very comfortable, but it did make my feet feel great. We agreed that lake Tanuki was better, however. Lake 3 was a little otherworldly, looking as if scooped out of the volcanic rock. We liked how nestled it was into the mountains, very secluded. Not many people at this lake.
Leaving lake 3 and heading towards lake 4, we finally found the end of the lineup for the flower festival. 8km of cars, totally blocking the highway for a huge area. I think the amount of cars on the highway outnumbered the parking capacity by many times. Maybe a shuttle service would be warranted, I can't imagine having a massive section of highway completely impassible is a good idea.
Lake 4 was beautiful, and our road went around the back of it, following the shoreline. We enjoyed the parallax of the trees, the lake and Fuji in the background, thoughts staying to good times at lakes at home. Folks paddling around in kayaks added to the general good mood. The road on lake 4 led through as a tunnel to our last lake, Kawaguchiko, the largest lake today. We felt relieved, having had gone up and down many times on the plateau and were ready for a break.
I wanted some kind of food and maybe a beer, so we found a souvenir shop selling local beer, a grape cider and big bags of chips with Fuji on them. I picked out a wasabi flavour, and we found a spot in the shade to relax as we had a few hours before our hotel check in. When have we had time to kill in the last two months? It feels like forever ago that my time hasn't been filled to the brim, every day. Here, we sat and talked Fuji Q, how the beer tasted like bacon and was mediocre like the rest, and also how wasabi on chips is a thumbs up. I laid my head on Bryce's lap and we cooled down in the breeze, I watched the trees fluttering in the wind and thought about the Chinese ideal of landscape beauty being a windy day. With everything moving, I can see the interest.
Heading to our hotel, we were very ready for a hot shower and a bath. Good grief we were filthy. Four days of biking in heat and humidity with no access to showers. We are certainly going to try to get laundry done in the go, it's just too hard on our skin to wear salty sweaty clothes to ride in for ten hours a day, multiple days in a row. We made do with lots of chamois cream today, but we'll need a better strategy. Luckily laundromats here are excellent and have the dryer settings not to ruin our biking clothes. While we eat, we think we can do laundry on the go too so we don't need to use dirty clothes when we're riding. Bryce thinks he can find us more places to shower too. We're gross, but mostly because we're not trying very hard.
Our hotel was in the middle of nowhere between town and mt Fuji, up another incline we didn't want. I was pretty crabby by the time we got there to find a modest hotel. We stopped our watches and I reeled as I saw the total ascent for the day, 1300m. No wonder I was tired! I just set a new personal best for climb two days earlier, and a PB for distance yesterday, does this mean I can try harder? I feel like someone who is tapped out shouldn't be able to string together pbs if they're giving it their all. I feel like I am, but I guess it's not a bad thing to do better than you expect.
The lobby was oddly large and empty, and the receptionist told us they didn't need our passports. That's a first, I thought it was law for them to take copies of our passports. Next, they have us an info card that essentially said that aside from the hotel onsen, there were zero amenities besides beer at $3.50 a can. When Bryce asked if the onsen was the curtain behind them, the receptionist and the manager who had popped out of the back room both eagerly pointed at my tattoo like a gotcha and both exclaimed that I would not be allowed. There are better ways to go about this. We went up to our room, me thoroughly displeased, to find they had put us at the end of the hallway on the third floor. The room is decently sized, but we found we had no bathtub to soak in, and now it was known that we have tattoos so no onsen. Fantastic. Now I wanted to rip heads off. When we went downstairs to get our bags, I asked if they had a luggage cart, and the lady looked at me like I was asking her to take her clothes off, she squinted and said no. Good grief. Bryce offered to be the one to ask if they had a private onsen later.
After I had some water, some of the meal bars, and a shower I was starting to feel less angry. I guess four days is enough riding to fray anyone's nerves, but Bryce gets anxious when I'm angry at people, worried I'm going to make a scene. It's a fair worry, I am the kind of person to make a point of things. This time, however, I was going to give peace a chance and instead just packed up laundry for later and we headed out for dinner. I found a great looking burger place that purported to have Australian burgers, it was a bit of a hike, but I thought it would be worth it. Biking up more hills before food was a tough pill to swallow for sure.
The burger place was popular enough that a man was working the parking lot, and the inside sure looked like a western kinda place. Everyone working was definitely Japanese, but the menu looked like someone from the west wrote it. The burgers came with fries, the usual cheeseburger double cheeseburger bacon lettuce tomato kinda stuff. A welcome reprieve from trying to sort through set meals and lame burgers for people who don't know better. These burgers, however, were fantastic. Juicy and well seasoned, they were pricey but worth it. Beef is extremely expensive here, most burgers are a blend of beef and pork or beef and... Things that are not beef. We've had some interesting hamburger here. We got extra fries and some craft beers, these beers we actually liked! We saw they were made in Belgium, but curiously had a note on the label about Quebec's recycling rates for bottles. Of course. We looked it up and it's a Japanese company bottling their stuff in Belgium to sell to Canada. No wonder we like it.
After dinner we went to the laundromat to get that over with. This place had dryers where we could select a lower temperature, perfect for spandex. It's still not good for them, but sacrifices need to be made to keep our sanity. I'm tired of stringing up clotheslines in hotel rooms already too small for us, I'll take the damage on the clothes to have clean and dry clothes to pack up. While the clothes were washing, we walked across the street to get some food for the morning, as the hotel both had zero on site food options, nor had anything nearby. We're thinking the hotel exists primarily for buses full of tourists staying as a package deal, and they get bussed somewhere else to eat as the busses are parked at the hotel overnight. We can't complain too much, we booked the hotel yesterday on the busiest week of the year and paid peanuts compared to other hotels. The location sucks, but the beds are pretty comfy and it's clean, so it's fine.
We headed back to the laundromat to have a few snacks and Bryce read while I wrote. A lot happened today, and I'm very tired. I will write more tomorrow. It's bedtime and whatever.

2024.04.28 11:14 No_Nefariousness513 [RANT] We need another flair for people that asking for itinerary or vacation schedule advice in Indonesia.

Mas dan mbak mod disini, saya izin ingin memberi saran kalau bisa buatkan flair lagi satu untuk orang2 luar yg nanya itinerary mereka pada mau liburan di Indo, ntah namanya "Travel" atau "Vacation".
On the other side, I'm just blown away that these people ask a subreddit instead of verified Destination Management Company (DMC) or Travel. Can't have too much money to spend on experienced people I guess?
I mean I understand if you have trust issue on DMCs because of their reputation or because you want to have "authentic" opinion from Indonesian people that live in Indonesia. But please these people lack judgement and experience to accommodate tourists expectations and needs. Every foreigners that come and ask in this subreddit will have different preference; someone from France will have more trekking activities than someone from Australia, and someone from Britain will just be fine in a 3-star hotel than someone from Russia. My advice is to choose a DMC that is popular within your country or your language.
And it will be bad if these people (and I mean you, itinerary askers) don't get the info about the place they're going to visit. I know a lot of people will say "oh it's easy just Google it!" which is of course if their destinations are in famous and well developed island like Bali and Java. But how about Lombok, Flores, Sumatra, Borneo, Celebes, or God forbid Papua?
Well yeah then you will say "oh I'm just asking these Indonesian people for new, unexplored destination, why are you so angry?" well you see these destinations might as well be a tourist trap without on hand field experience that you got from consulting a DMC. And you will pay not just money, but time and comfort.
You see DMCs or Travels, whichever you prefer, have many connections and resources in destinations they sell. I'm talking about accommodation, activity, transport, and guide. You can get cheaper deal in accommodation with a DMC than you do it yourself; with discount in either 20% to 40% room price because those accommodations have a special price called contract rate with the DMC. You can also book a transport with a vehicle request on your choice, and you don't even need to have a headache thinking about booking. And also you will have a choice on which kind of guide that will accompany you.
But the strength of having your vacation managed by DMC lies on 3 things: 1. You can personalized the hell out of it. Want to see a Komodo and riding a bike later? Yep we can. Want to see a Blue Fire and then chilling in a hot spring? We got you. How you ask? The prevalence of free independent traveler (FIT) that throw away the traditional package based system have made the DMCs now spend resources attracting cheaper albeit humongous amount of FIT. The sheer volume of FITs have drown Group Series after COVID, and the DMC will follow the most profitable path. In FIT you don't need to share your comfort with stranger, it is completely accommodating for you, destination and all.
  1. You will need safety in a foreign country, which include Indonesia, and it will be guaranteed by a DMC. You will need someone that has worked before in this type of industry to accompany you, and not someone that is a friend of a friend of a local people. You will be expected to get scammed (I mean literally scammed, not tourist tax/price) if you don't know how to navigate in your destination, and there are risks that involved during a vacation. Having accident is a thing here, and it's not uncommon. Somebody that can secure your safety will be valuable, and even more valuable if they could provide insurance during your visits.
  2. Information. This is the most underestimated aspect of a DMC, and I'm not kidding. Do you know Idjen Crater in Banyuwangi now have a policy which states that you need Doctor's Notice before you can see the Blue Fire? Do you know that three regencies in Bali have agreed to raise entrance price in their famous landmarks? Do you know you need to pay tourist tax with an application? The last one is still in discussion, but still, these informations are valuable to someone that plan their vacation in advance. The DMCs have knowledge regarding local policies because they exchange information with each other, every day. And in Bali they have an organization, called ASITA that discuss and exchange news about Indonesia tourism.
That's my rant, thank you for reading. I'm also apologize of my flair is incorrect.
TL:DR : Males bertanya ke DMC, sesat di tujuan / Too lazy asking a DMC will make you lost on your destination.

2024.04.28 10:47 exhaustedspice He’s spending our holiday fixed on a school that has less than our countries schools

I (41) am on holiday with my partner in Fiji for his 50th birthday.
I come from a less than ideal background that included below poverty living from childhood through to raising my own kids with no money.
I worked extremely hard for years, being unable to afford education to get ahead.
I earn well enough now that between us we have managed to invest wisely to reduce costs and earn some retirement income (ETA: I’ve mostly been the higher income earner in our relationship, and I taught him how work for it, how to climb the ladder instead of depend on his parents, budget properly instead of living week to week and make smart investments)
We are not wealthy, we never will be, but we can ride out economy ebbs and flows and will be able to fund our own retirement.
He on the other hand comes from parents who ensured he had the best of everything and continued financial support into adulthood (his father still does, mother passed a few years back) he has never had to worry about his next bill, clothing, entertainment, housing or next meal.
His parents were never wealthy. They both worked hard to provide for him and hoped this would lead him to be financially successful, or at least appear as such.
We are not on the same page when it comes to accomodation when we go away. He’s always looking for high end, while I prefer modest because we don’t plan to spend our time in the room, it’s just for sleeping, so I don’t understand spending the majority of funds on a bed and limiting the funding to experience the local opportunities.
We had to borrow the money to take this holiday then we had to save hard to afford spending money to enjoy it.
Our accomodation is $15k for 9 days because he wanted luxury! I agreed only because it’s his 50th and because the resort is heavily involved in supporting the community.
Now, Fiji is a developing country so it’s customary to consider gifting, donating and tipping.
I’m passionate about kids and education so I bought stationary, craft and games to donate to a local school and we discussed making an affordable donation.
We choose to visit a special needs school because they don’t tend to receive the level of funding the main schools do (even the main schools are poorly funded but it’s worse for the special needs schools here) and they also don’t get the tourist support that main schools do as well.
Since we got here my partner has been increasingly splashing cash on those who serve us, $5-$10 tips are not enough, the first guy who opened a door for us got a $20 tip, only because I said $50 is too much.
He keeps upping the planned tips for specific staff at our resort as well, going into several hundred each, thinking he’s changing their life or something and I’m trying to pull him back, explain we don’t know how it works here and we don’t know these people to know they need the money, we are at a luxury resort, I’m sure the tips are plentiful!
And I keep reminding him we are not wealthy, we borrowed the money to stay here, we still have to pay it back.
By my observations, my partner was leaning towards tipping far more than the actual wealthy gusts this resort is predominantly accommodated by.
I have learned more about the staff and find out they are already wealthy, living in beachfront homes twice the size of our own, multiple income sources. Their wage is low but they are smart, their not working for a wage, they are working for the tips.
He’s acting like we are wealthy when we are not, aside from the financial burden that places on as, it also puts us at risk, looking like we have cash to splash in a developing country…
Here is where things have really a turn though.
We visited the local special needs school a few days back and he’s been obsessing about it since.
We gave gifts, made a very good donation and I asked them about their situation, what support they get from government, community, their needs and barriers.
Anyone who has visited a school in a developing country will understand how it pulls at the heart strings and you don’t feel like you can do enough for them.
I admitted this to my partner afterwards and said I wanted to do more, I was thinking along the lines of a little fundraising, some regular supply packages.
He’s become obsessed since!
Wants to cancel the rest of our paid activities and save the rest of our spending money and go back and give them the lot, then he wants to pretty much send them monthly donations - we are talking the ones we need to keep investing for our own future here.
I get it, poverty is sad, but we can’t just decide we are going to single handedly devote the little we have and rescue this school.
There are ways to stay connected and ways we can support them without making it our life’s mission.
We don’t have the details for the school so I planned to get more information when the staff member who organised the visit comes back on shift next week, but my partner is obsessively pouring over the internet trying to find contact details for the last 2 days, asking around hoping to find someone who has details now, he’s consumed by it!
So we are spending $1,200 per night right now not to enjoy a vacation (my first ever, only had weekends away before this) but to obsess over one school that could do with some support.
And honestly, I feel like it’s fake, I can’t be certain, but it’s a little over the top and it’s not the first time he’s acted over generous about things that make you look like a good person, but he certainly doesn’t live a lifestyle of advocacy.
Today we attended a local church service and he was like ‘I’m going to talk to them about raising money for the school’ I think that’s because I tried to explain we don’t have to give them all our money, we can tap into fundraising or wealthy entities looking to donate to causes and help raise their profile.
But going into a local church, as a tourist, and start telling them where to focus their efforts in their own community is tacky.
I have a sour feeling about it all now and I’m feeling like a terrible person because I’m constantly pulling on the reigns and saying no.
I wish we never went to the school and I just supported him in having the luxury holiday he wanted, it was a bad idea for me to want to connect with the people.
He did similar thing with the staff too, they were trying to be social and invited us to smoke with them in the staff area when they saw us going out front to smoke. He declined, but I was like ‘well, I’m going, I’m not missing an opportunity to learn about them and their culture’
So he followed me, then basically took over and I could barely speak to them, then every smoke break afterwards, made a point of always going to the staff area, even if it meant ignoring a closer smoking area and trekking across the resort. So now he’s the life of th staff party he didn’t even want to attend and I havnt been able to connect with them
