2024.05.14 23:09 StarlightSunset92 I wish I had never lost interest in space and I wish society was much more aspirational

I remember the early 2010s as a much more optimistic but more vapid time.
I remember really interested in space and sci fi during the Summer before my first year of college in 2013 because I picked up a cheap copy of "Mass Effect" from a local GameStop. after getting tired of Call of Duty and remembering how a friend begged me to play it.
What I experienced blew me away. I ended up getting the whole trilogy and all the DLC. I binged through Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, and Firefly. I bought a cheap telescope and went stargazing. I started following Neil Degrasse Tyson and Startalk.
Eve Online was another sci fi universe that dazzled me.
That Summer was so magical.
Sadly by the time I was in college those interests largely died out.
During my college years I was obsessed with "Greek Life" and "Organic Food". I was obsessed with vacations to Disney World. I was obsessed with German made luxury cars. I was obsessed with Game of Thrones and Marvel. I was obsessed with getting a cushy office job that would give me nice things. I thought that "Frat Bros" and "Valley Girls" were the coolest people.
But since 2020 my worldview has undergone another radical shift. Maybe I have rediscovered my true self.
During the quarantine of 2020 I check out Apple TV and one particular show on there reignites my interest in space and aviation. The return of American human spaceflight through "Crew Dragon" and the new Mars rover, Perseverance adds fuel to that fire.
My interest in sci fi came roaring back as well. I picked up Vernor Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep" and it gave me a sense of wonder I haven't felt since playing the first Mass Effect all those years ago. I finished James S.A. Corey's "The Expanse" series and while I enjoyed it I hope humanity would aspire to a space future that didn't have so much inequality and struggle. I am now reading Iain M. Banks "Culture" novels and with the recent advancements in AI and the UFO craze I think that vision of the future is much more believable than several years ago. And I started following a website that had a lot of space news on it, Ars Technica that also had a lot of other science and technology as well.
That along with the West Coast heatwaves ignite a passion for science and other technology as well.
I become more open to GMOs and nuclear power. I become more excited about "Nuclear Fusion". I remain cautious about AI but still dream of the possibilities.
Now I don't care too much about material stuff anymore. Now I think that astronauts, scientists, and engineers are the coolest people.
Now I wonder what our society would be like today if instead of being so mired in social problems and being obsessed with Hollywood level materialism complete with giant mansions, yachts, and private jets and instead going all in with science and technology because we dreamed of creating a future that looked like it came out of a sci fi novel.
Fully reusable spacecraft, nuclear and fusion powered rockets, rotating ring space stations, bases on the Moon and Mars, asteroid mining, asteroid colonies, O'Neill cylinders, generation ships, warp drive, regrowing lost limbs, etc.
What could we achieve if we dreamed?
What could we achieve if we started doing everything we could to stop global warming and control social problems because we dreamed of what would happen once got those under control and started redirecting massive amounts of money, resources, and people into science and space programs?
Looking back I wished I hadn't lost interest in space, sci fi, and science.
Looking back I find it sad that I never knew anyone from my typical suburban middle class school district during the 2000s and early 2010s who went into science or engineering.
I heard that the 1960s "Space Race" inspired many youth of that time period to go into science or engineering and those youth who went into those fields ended up giving us the 1990s tech boom. It seemed like society at least in my area was obsessed with either war or with Hollywood level materialism. Math and science were seen as things that were "Uncool" but that was more of middle school thing.
Perhaps if the American government was better in the 90s and 2000s and fostered a culture of aspiration I would have known at least one or two and I think that would have been a better world.
Could just one TV show be that powerful?
I heard that "Star Trek" inspired the creation of technology. Apple TV's "For All Mankind" is probably continuing that legacy by increasing interest for space.

2024.05.14 22:59 Quirky-Reputation-89 Why did CostCo pick a chicken as its loss leader?

I understand what loss leaders are, and that people love tasty chicken ready to eat, but it just seems to me that there are many highly desirable products sold at costco that are also perishable, and I'm not saying the chicken is a bad idea, I am eating one right now, I am just curious how that choice likely got made, and why not another item? is it related to the food court hot dogs, and they are just banking on people being hungry and eating cheap food there so they can keep shopping longer?

2024.05.14 22:46 Educational_Wonder70 ULPT Request: How can I invest my cash anonymously?

I live on disability and food stamps, which is a pretty meager amount of money. I still try to squirrel away cash when I can for emergencies. Unfortunately, SSI only allows you to have up to $2000 in assets, including bank accounts. $2000 is hardly enough for many small surprise expenses, let alone anything significant. Cash can obviously just sit in an envelope somewhere, but then it’s just losing value because of inflation.
So, how can I invest my cash anonymously, with as much growth as possible to keep up with inflation and cost of living, while minimizing the risks? I’m not trying to launder money or something, just not get poorer and more exposed to the risk of losing everything if something goes wrong.

I am 18 and I lost my job as a waitress due to the Coronavirus. I waited to file for unemployment because it seemed I had an opportunity for a remote access job and would be able to work from home until I could get my job back, but it turned out to be a scam and now I have to wait on unemployment to go through. I just need some money to stock up on food and supplies for my pets. All of my money that is in the bank is currently locked in a growth account that I can’t access until April First. I may be able to pay back early on that day, it all depends on how quickly the unemployment process goes. I do understand that I am new to posting here (I have been a member of this sub for quite some time!)
If $100 is too much to ask for as a first time requester I completely understand and am 100% willing to take an offer lower. I can answer any questions some may have as well!
If it means anything, my pets are a hamster, a dog, and a bearded dragon! Their names are Ham Sandwich, Dozer, and Noodle; respectively.

Well my list is about 10x longer than I expected and collecting my own thoughts took most of the morning so I'm hangry now. Please let me know any others that are a good fit for the list. 2024.05.14 21:20 DogLov4106 My friends household

Long story short, One of my friends F(25) lives with her mother(51) we’ll call her mom, bricks. Her boyfriend moved to another state and wants to take her with him. So basically her mom uses her as a second piggy bank and takes everything she makes, bricks also screams at her for cleaning up after her. I mean bricks is 51 she should be able to clean up after herself, bricks is extremely narcissistic, she will say one thing then turn it around and act like she never said it. My friend is scared of her mother for many reasons, bricks is physically violent, screams constantly etc. bricks also has to make everything a competition, wether it be from how she can cook better to how my friend wasn’t rxped as bad as her. Basically everything. my friend went to Walmart to get some things the other day and offered bricks to come with her since bricks always complains about never going out. My friend was using her boyfriend’s card since she literally cannot afford to feed herself, once they got home bricks lost her mind. Screaming and everything bc my friend didn’t offer to buy her anything, she told her mom that her boyfriend doesn’t want his money spent on other people. Bricks said that since her boyfriend can buy her stuff then he can give her(bricks) money for rent, bricks also blames the boyfriend for her poor relationship with her daughter. Bricks is extremely jealous of my friends relationship with her boyfriend, mind you bricks and the boyfriend have only ever had like 3 conversation and bricks tries to manipulate my friend into thinking he’s a bad guy. (He’s not he’s an amazing person). Bricks has also asked my friend personal questions about boyfriend, asking the size of his yk what and how she can “steal” him from her. The boyfriend despises bricks, and bricks hates him because the boyfriend will not put up with her bs. My friend just takes it and can’t even defend herself or she’s told that she’s cutting bricks off, my friend gets forced to stand in one room and just get screamed at or law bricks will hurt her. Bricks has also threatened my friends life if she ever tries to leave, any time my friend is happy bricks gets extremely mad. Then somedays bricks acts all nice yet bricks has told my friend how she wish she never had her etc. bricks blames my friend for eating all of the food in the house because “she’s the biggest” yet my friend has developed an eating disorder because of bricks. Bricks is, manipulative, narcissistic, jealous, entitled etc. she also calls herself the world’s best mother. She constantly lies about other people as well, she told my friend that I was sending her death threats yet I never did. My friend is very skittish and easy to manipulate which is why Ive been helping her bf set things up to help her move out. Bricks has caused my friend to be late to her job and even get fired from one because if my friend even tries to walk away she is physically grabbed and slammed against a wall and told not to move until she’s done. Mind you bricks can scream in her face for hours and my friend won’t even say a word.
When my friend moves out should we call the police so she can do it without the possibility of getting hurt? Does anyone else think that bricks needs serious help? She needs to grow up big time.

Challenges faced by Newcomers in Canada
Moving to a new country is an exciting and life-changing experience, but it often comes with its own set of challenges. For newcomers in Canada, navigating a new culture, language, and job market can be overwhelming. In this blog post, we will explore some of the common obstacles faced by immigrants in Canada and offer tips on how to overcome them. Whether you are a recent arrival or have been living in Canada for years, this post will provide valuable insights on how to thrive in your new home.

Introduction

Canada is a country known for its diversity, welcoming nature, and opportunities. It is home to people from various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. In fact, Canada has one of the highest immigration rates in the world with approximately 350,000 newcomers arriving each year.
For many immigrants, moving to Canada can be a dream come true. However, this transition comes with its own set of challenges and obstacles that newcomers must face. In this blog article, we will discuss some of the common challenges faced by newcomers in Canada and how they can overcome them.

Adjusting to a New Culture:

One of the biggest challenges that newcomers face when they arrive in Canada is adjusting to a new culture. From food and language to social norms and customs, everything may seem unfamiliar at first. This can lead to feelings of isolation and homesickness for many newcomers.
To overcome this challenge, it is important for newcomers to learn about Canadian culture before arriving in the country. This could include researching traditions, etiquette, values as well as trying out local cuisine or attending cultural events. Additionally, joining community groups or seeking support from other immigrants who have already established themselves in Canada can also help with the transition.

Finding Employment:

Another major challenge faced by newcomers in Canada is finding employment. Despite having qualifications and work experience from their home country, many immigrants struggle to find jobs due to lack of Canadian work experience or recognition of foreign credentials.
To tackle this challenge, it is crucial for newcomers to research job markets before immigrating and understand what skills are in demand in their chosen field. Networking through professional associations or attending job fairs can also help them make connections and learn more about job opportunities available.

Navigating the Education System:

For immigrant families with school-aged children, navigating the education system can be daunting as well. Differences between educational systems from their home country may cause confusion while enrolling their children into schools.
To ease this challenge, it is recommended for newcomers to research and understand the Canadian education system beforehand. They can also seek guidance from school counsellors or immigrant support services to help their children transition smoothly into a new educational environment.
Moving to a new country presents its own set of challenges and newcomers in Canada are no exception. However, with proper research, preparation and support from the community, these challenges can be overcome.

Overview of immigration to Canada

Canada has long been known as a welcoming and diverse country, attracting immigrants from all over the world. In fact, it is estimated that approximately one in five Canadians are foreign-born. With its strong economy, high standard of living, and reputation for multiculturalism, it’s no wonder that Canada is such a popular destination for newcomers.
Immigration to Canada can be traced back centuries ago when the first indigenous peoples arrived on the land. However, the modern-day immigration policies were established in the 1960s with the introduction of the Points System. This system was designed to evaluate potential immigrants based on their skills, education, language proficiency, work experience and other factors deemed important for successful integration into Canadian society.
Today, there are various pathways for individuals to immigrate to Canada. The most common ones include economic immigration programs such as Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), family sponsorship programs, refugee protection programs and special programs for international students or temporary workers who wish to stay permanently in Canada.
Each pathway has its own set of requirements and selection criteria which can make navigating through the immigration process daunting for newcomers. Moreover, depending on an individual’s country of origin and personal circumstances, there may also be challenges in obtaining necessary documents or meeting medical or security clearance standards.
Once an immigrant successfully arrives in Canada, they face a whole new set of challenges related to settlement and integration into their new home. These challenges can range from finding suitable housing and employment opportunities to adapting to a new culture and learning a new language.
Newcomers may also struggle with accessing essential services such as healthcare or education due to lack of knowledge about available resources or language barriers. This can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration as they try to establish themselves in a new country while facing language barriers or cultural differences.
Furthermore, many immigrants face financial difficulties upon arrival as they may not have enough savings or credit history required by landlords or banks. This can delay the process of finding stable housing and employment, adding to the stress of settling in a new country.
In addition, newcomers may also experience discrimination or racism, which can have a negative impact on their overall well-being and sense of belonging. This is especially true for visible minorities or immigrants from underrepresented communities.
Despite these challenges, thousands of immigrants continue to make Canada their home each year. With support from government programs, non-profit organizations, and the welcoming nature of Canadian society, many newcomers are able to overcome these obstacles and build successful lives in Canada.

Reasons for immigration to Canada

There are countless reasons why individuals choose to immigrate to Canada. From economic opportunities to quality of life, Canada offers a multitude of benefits that make it an attractive destination for newcomers. Moreover, with universal healthcare coverage, free education up until secondary school level, and other social benefits, living standards in Canada are often considered amongst the best in the world.
  3. Multicultural Society : Known as a cultural mosaic, Canada is home to people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. This welcoming attitude towards diversity makes it easier for newcomers to settle into their new country without feeling isolated or discriminated against. Furthermore, this also provides an opportunity for immigrants to learn about different cultures and traditions while maintaining their own.
  4. Education System : The Canadian education system is renowned globally for its high standards and quality education programs at all levels – from primary school through post-secondary institutions. For many families looking to provide their children with the best educational opportunities possible, moving to Canada can be an attractive choice.

With its strong economy, high quality of life, diverse society, excellent education system, political stability, and natural beauty – it’s no wonder that Canada is often seen as an ideal destination for newcomers looking for a better future.

Challenges faced by newcomers in Canada:

Canada is known for its welcoming and diverse culture, making it a popular destination for immigrants from around the world. However, despite its reputation as a friendly and inclusive country, newcomers to Canada often face various challenges when settling into their new home. In this section, we will explore some of the most common challenges faced by newcomers in Canada.

1. Language Barrier:

One of the biggest challenges faced by newcomers in Canada is the language barrier. Many immigrants struggle with English or French as they are not their first language. This can make it difficult to communicate effectively with others, find employment opportunities, and navigate daily tasks such as grocery shopping or using public transportation.
To overcome this challenge, many newcomers enrol in English or French language classes offered by community centres or immigrant settlement organisations. These programs help them improve their language skills and gain confidence in communicating with others.

2. Employment:

Finding suitable employment is another significant challenge faced by newcomers in Canada. Despite having impressive qualifications and work experience from their home countries, many immigrants struggle to find jobs that match their skillset due to lack of Canadian work experience or recognition of foreign credentials.
To overcome this challenge, it is crucial for newcomers to network within their communities and take advantage of job fairs and workshops specifically designed for immigrants. They can also seek guidance from immigrant settlement organisations on how to get their credentials evaluated and recognized in Canada.

3. Cultural Adjustment:

Moving to a new country means adjusting to a new culture and way of life, which can be overwhelming at times for newcomers. They may experience culture shock and feel homesick as they try to adapt to a different lifestyle.
To cope with cultural adjustment, it is essential for newcomers to connect with other immigrants who have gone through similar experiences. Joining community groups or participating in cultural events can also help them feel more integrated into Canadian society.

4. Housing:

Securing affordable housing can be a significant challenge for newcomers in Canada, especially in larger cities where rental prices are high. Many newcomers may also not have a credit history or references, making it challenging to find suitable accommodation.
To overcome this challenge, newcomers can seek assistance from immigrant settlement organisations that offer housing support. They can also consider living with roommates or in shared accommodations until they establish themselves financially.
While Canada offers numerous opportunities and a vibrant cultural scene for newcomers, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. To overcome these challenges, it is crucial for immigrants to seek out support and resources available to them in their communities. Whether you are a recent arrival or have been living in Canada for years, this post will provide valuable insights on how to thrive in your new home.
2024.05.14 20:31 xX_bruh_moment Cant take things seriously (rant)

I'm turning 22 this year and lately i've been thinking about how i even get to this point in my life. I never seem to be able to take anything seriously from school, career, to friendships.
At school i had the chance to be top of my class but never did cause i under estimate stuff too quick and get overwhelmed when the test day comes. Sometimes i get very good grades at the first semesters and fell off hard on the second one because i thought even if i failed the average cumulative grades would pass me and proceeds to mess around. When i get to uni i didnt study for my entrance test and got pretty poor result, i got in just because not many people sign up for my major. I go to a uni known for their comp-sci major and picked marketing just because its an easier path to a degree. While studying in uni i got an offer for an internship at a bank and a big food manufacturer from my cousin, but chose the job offered by my friend at an online retailer instead and talked my way to a pretty comfy position. I built a good relationship with my coworkers and made a name for myself. I promised to take on the jobs my supervisor gave me but i have some demands about the current system. My supervisor was a very good guy, he talked to the higher ups and actually made the changes. This was very good for me cause it meant i can register the company's name for my internship program on my uni while working flexibly with a full time position and pay. My supervisor even aced my internship scoring. Everything seems to be going perfect, too comfortable even. This is when things started to go downhill. I got too comfortable and started to mess up small things and it piled up into a bigger problem than i expected. I know everybody makes mistakes, but sometimes i managed to make the same mistakes multiple times. At this point my friend outperformed me and even got promoted. While working i spent most of my time at my job and my thesis got quite abandoned so i quit my job to focus on my thesis, but then my dad revealed that he wants me to work with him to run my family business after i graduate.
This is the part where i felt like a fraud and a scam, since technically i never perfom outstandingly well in anything. The only way i got ahead in my life is by doing favors and making sure the people that actually know what they're doing owe me favors. It's true that i never cheat, stole, or scam anyone in a literal sense, but getting to this point of my life without actually being able to do anything myself feels like a scam. Even in my friendships sometimes i'd hype up a day to hangout and cancel for no reason. One time a friend even tried to introduce me to a girl and i never followed up on it for no reason at all. Its like i progressed in life without actually progressing as a person.

2024.05.14 20:09 aliaslight Work life balance at the price of low income and no family.

They say you need to lose something to get something, as most of us can't have it all. I am willing to lose the idea of having a decent bank balance even when I'm old. I'm willing to lose the idea of having children and making my own family. All I want is a job that pays me enough for food, rent, electricity, internet, and maybe a couple of times of eating out a month, and nothing more. No savings. The reason I'm willing to pay this price is because I desperately want a job that will allow me to not think about it after 5pm. Something that is strictly 9-5 or lesser, and nothing more. Something that allows me to spend decent time with my parents and friends every day, play video games, do my hobbies.
What job can I get that fits these requirements? I'm a btech cse graduate from a tier 2 uni.

2024.05.14 20:09 Few-Square-5617 DINNER RECS

HI me an a group of my friends (in our 20s) looking for some dinner places in NOLA doesn’t have to be in Downtown but we’re looking for something decently affordable and cozy dinner spots in New Orleans that won't break the bank. Any hidden gems or favorite local joints you'd recommend? Preferably somewhere with a comfortable vibe where we can relax and enjoy some delicious food without spending a fortune. Thanks in advance for your suggestions! 💋
