At some point in the not-so-distant future, I will release a book that I am working on. It is tentatively entitled Take Care, Caretakers. I like the title; however, I’ve been taken with the verbiage in many social media circles that prefer the term “Caregiver” over “Caretaker.” The differences seem semantic at first glance; however, upon closer consideration, there is something generous in “caregiver,” while something seems selfish in “caretaker.” Give versus take seems like a plain and literal difference.
As I’ve been writing through this 122-Day Writing Challenge, I’ve adopted the term caregiver over caretaker. I am starting to question that now. To say we are givers highlights the inherent problem many of us find ourselves in. We are chronic givers to a fault. Giving is not just the only thing (action) we know; it’s often the only thing (action) we feel comfortable and confident doing. We are prime candidates for co-dependency, self-loathing, and an overall sense that we lack value. After all, our society shows little regard for those who give care. Don’t believe me? Just look at our broken systems in pre-K education, geriatric care, and nursing homes. “They” say there are not enough workers to fill those jobs. Does anyone care to guess why that might be?
It is time for the givers of the world to start taking. Taking credit for the work we do. Take ourselves seriously because no one else will until we do it first. It is time that we change the paradigm of only giving care. Yes, we give care, but we don’t give ourselves away in the process. We take the joy, the gratitude, and the growth that is there for us in our work. We take our boundaries seriously and take the necessary steps to enforce those boundaries when necessary.
The work we do is special and specialized. There are many professional caretakers: nurses, teachers, therapists, clergy, etc. And there are even more caretakers who are volunteers–usually unwitting family members who are drafted into this service. But for many of us, this service is a life-changing gift we cannot trade, no matter how much we wish we could.
So, I stand by my original verbiage: “Take Care, Caretakers.” I stand by it because I am declaring it as a challenge.

i know theres a ton regarding palestine and gaza and rafah right now, and i dont know all the details other than that those countries’ people are being forced to evacuate and all. and it fucking sucks.
i know there were boycotts against certain chains. initially i participated, but then i began researching and i couldnt find any genuine resources proving that buying mcdonalds in america is supporting g3nocide. so i ignore it.
my mutuals and friends post updates regarding the situation and conflict caused by israel. i dont read them. i did, then i stopped. all i know is that israel is causing issues for others, and it sucks. but i stopped seeing the need to constantly update myself on every detail.
now im seeing tiktoks made by families, asking for help. asking to share and boost their video in order to make money so they can live in safety. interacting with their videos will only make the algorithm show me more, but ignoring the videos makes me feel god awful, seeing the faces of moms who ask me to stop scrolling and help out their family.
i heard someone say that having ignorance is a privilege. i agree entirely. and that that privilege should be used for good. i agree entirely.
but i dont know what it is, but something is stopping me. something is stopping me from staying informed or from helping much, in the the little ways i can, like by avoiding certain chains and reposting tiktoks. its not that i dont want to help. its not that i dont think little tiny efforts cant be piled up to make a difference. its not that i dont care. im just tired of thinking about things that dont directly concern me.
i feel like an awful person saying that. saying i dont want to think about a world conflict means im privileged, ignorant, and supporting g3nocide. but i needed to get it off my chest.

I started a truck driving class a couple months ago & when I started it took me a little time to get the concept of how to manuever the trailer due to me having no experience with a extra pedal (clutch) & the size of the vehicle. I stayed at it & my second month in the class, I came across a youtube video where a guy was breaking down the concept & he compared it to a pallet jack & how u have to manuever it a certain way to get it to do what u want. After I watched that video it all started to come together for me & my instructor showed more trust in me & slowly allowed me to make progress in the truck. As the weeks went by, I continued to get the hang of shifting gears & making turns & when my time came to get scheduled for my test I felt pretty confident. My test was about 2 weeks away from my last day in class. Unfortunately, when I took the test I failed the pre-trip because I left the engine running while performing the leak down (dumb mistake I know but I was nervous). The second time I paid for my retest, I passed the pre trip & passed the straightback, offset, but pointed out on the alley dock because the yard at the testing site is a little smaller than the yard at our school where we practice. After that, I had to find a new job to pay for my next retake, which is $300 dollars every retake. It took me about a month to pay my rent & get caught up on everything & when I paid for my retest, it had been about a month & a half since I had driven the semi. I was told I get one day to refresh my skills & prepare for the test. When I showed up for my refresher, I could immediately feel that I had lost a little confidence I had in making the manuevers & the steps I was taught. The next day I went to take my test & I struggled worst than I ever had before, almost pointed out on the straightback & ultimatley pointed out on the offset. Now I am a little worried about my chance because I feel like I need a full week at least to refresh on my skills & be totally prepared to drive on the road during the test. Is there anybody that has had problems with the cdl test similar to mines & can give me a little advice? Im 30 yrs old & really feel like this would be a career I enjoy doing. I cant continue to work these dead end jobs with piece of shit supervisors. If someone knows where I can go in Michigan to get some training please lmk im willing to pay.

At the time of filling the application form i tried again & again to upload a copy of my physical photo, but for some reason it was saying not valid not valid everytime, so I tried again by cropping my aadhar card photo and it worked. Now the problem is that I don't have any physical copy of my aadhar card photo ( as they take one on the spot while making ). At the time i wasn't aware of this " SaMeToSaMePhOtO " rule, so will I be allowed if I showed my physical photo or I have to take print out of my aadhar card one. Has anyone has faced this issue last year, if so what did you do?

THIS IS JUST A RANT
I just recently joined a small local law firm as an intern, and I'm miserable. I decided to intern before starting law school, and all the firms I applied to were notified about this matter.However, I'm ready to learn.
The first few days were okay-ish; people were "nice.". However, as the days progress, everyone just seems to have their own circle of "friends.". I do have someone to talk to too, a dude sitting next to me in a different row, and another dude who is sitting across from me.
I admit I made a lot of mistakes in my first few weeks,but I took all the changes as advice. I came in late due to vehicular issues or a Microsoft Word error. I thought it was okay as the others would come in late as well (the pupil of Chambers and the lawyers) and try ducking away from the boss's view (if he is in), then they would laugh about it among each other. However, I was advised otherwise by my superior. Now that I come an hour earlier than the others, I would read, scroll on social media, study, or whatever to pass the time until 9 am (work hour), and if I was late, I would inform my superior. Even during lunch time, I would be back as early as I could so I wouldn't be in trouble, but the others would sometimes be back 30 minutes late to the office, laughing away with their bobba tea in hand. I also apply to some Microsoft Word classes to improve my MW usage so I won't make so many useless mistakes and be a burden.
I was put under conveyancing,which I had never studied before, so to prepare myself, I self-studied and hired a tutor to help me understand better.
Next, I realised I don't get to do certain things unlike the others ( Pupil in Chambers (PIC), certain lawyers/paralegals) . At first, I thought it was due to the fact that I was still new and just an intern. However, they get away with more things, but I get in trouble if I do them. What annoys me is that some joined the firm only a month before me, and they are already "buddy-buddy" with the lawyers.
Next dilemma: I was told that everyone was going on a work trip that week, which at the time I thought was just the bosses and the executive lawyers, but it turns out it's everyone, including the staff and pupils in chambers. I was stuck with a lawyer who chose to stay behind. OFC, I had some issues with MW, which I tried the hardest to research on Google, YouTube, and even call some friends for help, but to no avail, and I was upfront about it to the lawyer I was aiding. Obviously, I got in trouble the next week when my supervisor was back. Hence, I applied for courses after working in MS so I could enhance my skills and be useful to my superiors, so I wouldn't get that resentful and disappointed look from my superiors. Also, I didn't get to do anything that day; heck, I even asked people in the office if they needed any help (desk to desk , email and text, but was sadly ignored) .
When they got back from the trip, I realised they were closer to each other—heck, even with the bosses. I tried making friends but I seem to be getting ignored except by those 2 guys. Hence, I speak to the lawyers in a formal way, even though the secretary told me it was okay to talk on a first-name basis. I won't do so until they tell me it's okay, even towards the firm's secretary.
During lunch, I am lonely too. They would go eat together (except for a few who decided to stay behind to eat or chill in the office), and I was never invited, unlike when I was on my first day. Most of the lawyers are ladies (late 20's to early 30's, I think). From experience, women tend to be meaner to other ladies if you are not up to par with them. However, in the past, working with men was a different story; they were somehow more welcoming and pleasant to work with.
This morning, I got told to stop speaking with one of the PICs because she was trying to "concentrate.". Bitch gets to laugh and talk as loud as she wants when others are working but I can't? I use my earphones to muffle the sound if things gets loud. I used to be excited to come to work, but now I feel dread. I was contracted to be with the firm for 4 months, but now I somehow slightly regret joining the firm. I don't want to quit because its barely been 1-2 months, and I don't want to be a pussycat by crying about it or quitting (despite wanting to cry in the toilet stalls during lunch break).
Also,I don't always get tasks to do; I feel isolated, and everything I do seems to never be good enough. Despite all of this, I somehow still have the urge to learn and be helpful. So I filled my time studying and out of trouble. I try so hard to behave and do my work right so I won't be picked on or chastised by my superiors. Im getting diarrhoea thinking about it. The bright side about this firm is that they're pretty lenient, unlike other firms.
I know I can be a problem, so I try to mend my mistakes. The advice and feedback help, and I stay in my lane. What I understand is that I'm an intern at the bottom of the totem pole, especially given the fact that I'm not in school yet and that I'm slightly older (started later due to COVID). To them, I am a dog, and when they tell me to bark, I bark. Since I will be a dog for the next 4 months, I decided to be a Golden Retriever—helpful, friendly, and always ready to please and learn. I am learningto learn by showing a brave face and cry at home. I have to walk off the pain and all fo this will be just a memory. Luckily, the pay is good, and I need this for CV purposes.

What happens if we can't keep to our pledge? We give up or try again. And since we're here in /stopdrinking, we're not ready to give up.

Thank you all for the kind words and support yesterday! So many good vibes and it's one of the things I love most about hosting the DCI. Today I'm deep in meditation on just how far I've come, what all I've battled through, and I'm deeply grateful for the support system I've built up. I am surrounded by amazing friends who are able to rein me in when the lizard brain comes calling hardcore. I am loved by my partners, my mother, my kids, and even my ex. I'm cherished by dozens. I have my amazing StopDrinking family to fall back on as well. It reminds me of the lyrics from the Dropkick Murphys covering You'll Never Walk Alone:

The battle may seem daunting, but you have family and support here. We've all been through some serious shit and remained sober through it all. Or we've learned a lesson from a relapse because of the harshness of reality. The accountability and support is the best thing about this group of folks. But as long as you have hope in your heart, and a strong support system, you'll truly never walk alone!

I will not drink with you today!

Okay so I know people are going to see that title and immediately think “wannabe” but please hear me out. There’s a lot of backstory in this.
I 21m think I might have ADHD but I’m confused, lost, I don’t know where to start and I don’t want to embarrass myself and just turn out “I’m normal.”
I have a somewhat regular life now. I live alone, pay my bills, work, socialise, etc. However recently I’ve been overthinking a lot about my lifestyle and I just am unsure what to do. For example, my sleep schedule is royally fucked. I can’t sleep for the life of me. I feel uncomfortable if I move a smidge and just start thinking about stupid shit and fantasies until my body is quite literally exhausted enough to sleep. Which results in me then getting up at a random time 4 hours later. Can’t go back to sleep but will then sleep again 3 hours later for another 4 hours. I have to just lay there for hours on end to get a “good nights sleep.” Then at work I’m so underwhelmed and feel a force to work. I feel like I have to force myself to work or I won’t do it. I’m so bad at finishing things. I prepare things and make a plan in my head but it takes me double the time to actually finish it because I just get so bored and then have to force myself to do it again. I’ve also felt unmotivated recently and to be truthful it’s because this is the longest period I’ve had at work where I have not been promoted. Just plain feeling what’s the point at the moment. And the coffee. I’m mugging the company off completely. If I don’t have 3 I will just lollope.
Outside of work I also am backed up on so much stuff I have to do. I have my gym membership I haven’t cancelled yet. I haven’t cleaned my bathroom which I said I’d do 2 weeks ago. I haven’t sent my mum the bedsheets I saw that she wanted yet. I haven’t organised my washing properly in weeks. Just so many task that take so long to do for no reason at all and I can’t explain it. I could be lazy but I just can’t seem to do them on time. Don’t get me started on Christmas. Every year I am running around on the last week looking for anything. I left it so late last year I didnt even have any Christmassy wrapping paper. I also don’t know if this is a thing but if I enjoy a song I will play it over and over and over again until I will randomly no longer like it. I will replay the song so many times until I don’t get any enjoyment from it at all.
Now for some backstory. When I was around 12 I started getting panic attacks. I have anxiety and a panic disorder which I have been diagnosed with. My mum then started to notice difference with me and spoke with the family worker I had at the time. I had troubles in school and they suspected at the time I had autism. My family worker was a very nice lady and hope she is doing well but was very unsure if it was autism at the time, however suggested to my mum that I might be masking. At 12 this made no sense to me at all but I can see what she meant at the time. It took 2 years to get me referred and I went to get diagnosed. I just remember this woman giving me a book and asking me to explain the pictures and then pick an object out of a box and then talk about my school life. I didn’t lie, I was an utter shit show. I was expelled from 2 schools at that point. After that was done it took another month until my mum got the news that I did not have autism. I just remember her being devastated and confused on what was wrong with me. I then continued being a shit, until I turned into a bigger shit. I started smoking and drinking and then bam kicked out my 3rd school by age 15. I was then enrolled into a school for kids who had previously been bullied or suffer with other disabilities which make it no longer possible for them to attend mainstream schools. I remember her having to apply for this thing with the council so my education was paid for “truthfully I think I still have that document standing to this day.” This school offered lessons either one on one with a teacher or small groups. They also offered students with trained therapists and my one was an absolute gem. He enjoyed my company and I enjoyed his. A few months went by and me, my mum, my head teacher, another teacher and my therapist were in this meeting. I don’t remember much about it just shit I didn’t bother to listen to. However my therapist suggested to my mum that I might have ADHD and spoke with her about symptoms he had noticed which I didn’t even really pay much attention to. My mum flat out said no and said she wasn’t going to wait another 2 years for me to get seen to. So I continued to live my life yet again, get head boy, become a mentor, run an afterschool club, attend music, photography and art club. Then just randomly dropped out. Don’t know why I did this.
I just don’t know where to start, how do I even go about it. Do I just ring my doctors and say I think I have this? What if I look like a complete idiot? I just am so confused and lost and scared and where to start? I just can’t keep living like this I just want a bit of normality in my life and am just so tired of being like this.

I live in a fairly rural area in NE US. I'm on the Canadian border, so pretty northern. I have been trying to get crows to come to my yard since I moved here around a year ago. Most of the land around me is forest and fields that used to be farms, but I'm in a small pocket of a suburb.
I've noticed that up here I've never seen a murder. The most crows I've seen together is two, but more often they seem solitary. I've been told there are ravens as well, but haven't seen any. Today was the first time a crow has found the peanuts sprinkled in my yard before the grackles get to them. I tried to show my daughter and bro got spooked. I closed the shade to give him some privacy. Idk how far away he flew before I pulled it down.
Does anyone have experience with befriending crows around here? I want them to associate my yard with a safe haven. I currently have no pets (I will eventually), but there are some noisy, friendly dogs next door. They don't bark at the birds , but they do at anything else. I'd like the crows to know that my family would like to interact with them. That we're interested in a true friendship. I just can't get enough of them to come around to even be able to introduce myself.
Is there an audio clip that might be a universal call to crows across all crow dialects? I play clips of crows hanging out over a Bluetooth speaker, but it never gets any of them to come around and investigate.
Any help anyone can give is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Consequences have actions, or as my father would famously say, “MSHA (The equivalent of OSHA, but for mining) rules have been paid by blood” meaning every single rule we have for MSHA is because someone lost their life without it being in place. But this also extends to everything. All actions have consequences. Call it the butterfly effect or chaos theory etc. every action will effect you one way or another. It feels like (In the Western countries) have this, Do it now, mentality, it’s not the most effective or even healthiest way of thinking of things, you always need to step back, and think, “hold on, if I do X, will Y happen? Or will Z happen” The best example I think of is, when my good friend was messing around in class, and I told him to stop as his friend, because I knew that 1) He would get hurt or in trouble, 2) He wouldn’t pass the class, which was his last elective of the year, that he needed (this is shop). Well he didn’t stop, he was messing around with wood, that we were meant to touch, and I go and report it, otherwise he was gonna get hurt, after a couple minutes I hear a screaming, and he had cut his finger on a knife, (wasn’t to bad, but needed a couple stitches) for context he was trying, very poorly mind you, carving wood, with some sort of knife, the next day he shows up, in a finger cast… didn’t know that was a thing, and I told him, what my father always told, only with our class as the “MSHA”. He told me, I was too paranoid.

It’s been 6 months since I discovered the real truth, and my world came crashing down. It’s been 6 months since I disassociated and my closest friends blocked me, without even a goodbye. A lot has happened since then! I can’t believe how quickly it’s gone.
In this time, I had my first birthday and my first Christmas. It felt strange and sad considering it was just me and my boyfriend & his family, (not my family or loved ones), but it was a good start. I moved halfway across the world 3 months ago and have started a complete new life! I’ve met people who are amazing, kind people who care about others and I have common interests with. I’m starting to make some amazing friendships and unlike before, the only thing we have in common isn’t our religion. We have deep conversations about psychology, sociology, world issues and politics. It’s so different to JW land!
So much of my personality has been suppressed due to growing up in this cult. I had to suppress my interest in feminism, human rights and more. I didn’t have time for “hobbies” so I stopped reading books, stopped exercising and didn’t try new things. Sadly, I stopped thinking for myself. From speaking to others, I’ve realised that this cult has stolen my childhood from me. All those birthdays, Christmases - they took all the fun out of living! I’ll never be able to have a Prom, or a 21st birthday party. I can’t look back on childhood Halloween photos, or think about all the fun times I had trick or treating.
It’s not fair what this cult has done to us. I’ve had some really bad days. It feels like I’m alone in this because none of my friends have left, they’re all completely brainwashed and view me as a confused, misled worldly person. It’s hard when you feel like you’re the only person who sees reality.
But I’m finally able to reinvent myself - do whatever I want to do! I can finally listen to my own personal conscience and do the right thing because I want to, not because I’m scared of God’s wrath. I know that life will only get better, and I’m so grateful that I left and have so many opportunities.
When I meet people, I make sure to tell them about my ex-jw experience and spread the good news - that we can all avoid this cult if we raise awareness about it! People are shocked by my story, and often say they had no idea how bad JWs are.
Recently, my mother told me my old friends have been messaging her, asking about me. They’re hoping I’ll come back. It’s so sad - heartbreaking. They’re victims of this cult and I know how sad they must be because they can’t speak to me. They hope I’ll come back, but I never will. They’re trapped in this cult and I don’t see how they’ll ever wake up.
So I’m grateful that I’m out. I could be miserable right now, trying my best for an imaginary God and setting all my desires and dreams aside for him. Instead, I’ve discovered my passion for Psychology, studying to be a Psychologist, moved to a new country,started to make new friends and truly learn who I am. Waking up has helped me deal with my childhood trauma and learnt how being a JW made it worse. I can’t wait for the next 6 months, and for the day when I look back and being a JW feels like a distant dream!

Looking to see if anyone can explain to me how the large LED at concerts work.
Specifically, I see some tours that have very large LED screens as part of the show. The artist will have their back to the screen and facing outwards. There are some type of cameras displaying the front of the artist onto the screen behind them.
My question is, how does that not created a kind of tunnel effect if the camera is also facing the screen.

This is an update to my post about some revelations I made recently about why I felt so hurt by my T not reacting to my positive praises: https://www.reddit.com/TalkTherapy/s/bZlRQh2c5N (tl;dr I tie my value to my utility. I blame an absolutely abusive childhood for this. So, when my T doesn’t “use” me per se to somehow make himself happy or doesn’t see my love as valuable (as defined by me), then I lose my purpose and I become terrified that he’s going to get rid of me.)
I read him what I typed out like a commenter suggested! Thank you to the person who said that.
I had gone in fully expecting for him to terminate me, and I was ready to plead my case. But it indeed did turn out to be a beautiful session.
I shared with him the insight I had gained about my desperation at needing to know if he loved me; I was asking the wrong question. I know he loves me—he could try to deny it but I’d call bullshit so fast because I can feel it. I feel it in the way he looks at me, and in how much he is willing and wanting to be there with me.
My real question for him was, “Will you not leave me? Will you stay?”
He asked if I had read The Sympathizer as there was an argument in it made that people aren’t valuable as that implies that there is some sort of quantifiable value you can place upon a life. He argued that people are invaluable, I’m invaluable.
We spoke about anger, he says it’s helpful and constructive. He implied that some of the things I said cut him when I was upset which (1) I felt really sorry for, and (2) let’s me know that he really does get as much from our relationship as I do. I apologized for being a bitch, and he corrected me telling me to not call myself that.
I mentioned how someone had spoken about my “inner child” and how I fundamentally don’t believe in the idea of an inner child. “I hate this concept because that makes it seem like there’s a separation between you and the inner child. I don’t have an inner child because I AM that child!” I was curious why this made me so upset and it all boiled down to the fact that I have shame and embarrassment in feelings I consider childish. Being a child was not safe, and if I feel like a child then I become extremely & fiercely protective of myself.
So, I’m going to practice being more childlike which to me means being more candid and without fear. A “re-do”.
A few highlights from the session as said by my T:
• “It’s important for you to be able to be a child. This is why I work so hard to provide you space where you feel safe.”
• “Because I care about my job and because I care about you, I’m always going to be here. My only hope is that you keep coming back, that’s all I want from you.”
• I asked him if he had felt backed into a corner in our previous session when I was nearly demanding for him to give me something he possibly couldn’t. He responded, “Saying it like that, that I was backed into a corner makes it sound worse than what I was feeling, but in a way I did. I felt stuck. It’s not that it crosses my boundaries or that I can’t tell you that I care because I DO….it’s just that I know that even if I do tell you it won’t be enough. So I was trying to figure out how to say that in a way that wasn’t going to hurt you. In that instance, I felt stuck. I am pretty sure that is most of them, think I'll get at least a 4 on the rest of my APs feel confident so far, GPA tanked because of some family issues that year and this year, but anyways I plan to get into a Biomedical Science program and get my PhD and get into med school, getting into Emergency Sciences. I really want to get into an impressive school, but I cannot apply for the FASFA due to my parents being undocumented. Currently a Junior at a pretty big school, plan to be in more clubs next year but yeah. I was hoping to look into being an International Student in Germany or Spain, but I am not sure into how I want to look into that. I am worried about all of the rumors of how most countries are not how they seem (never been out of the country so I don't mean to be insensitive) and I want an affordable tuition. I was also looking into the University of Rochester in NY where my brother went, or University of Washington. I really don't want to stay in-state (AZ), but I fear I will have to go to U of A or NAU. Any ideas of places I can go where I have a chance to get into?

This is where I (25F) am mentally with him (32M) . - I enjoy spending time with him, he’s a sweet guy. - I am attracted to him, he has a beautiful smile - I enjoy conversing with him. - We have a crazy amount of interests in common and seem to value the same things. - He’s very smart - We are both child-free which is hard to find. - Ultimately If I had written someone with the interests, intelligence, and physical appearance I would want in a partner, it would be him. But there are things I would not have written…and I find myself confused much of the time. The negative: - He is a bit inconsistent in that he says many things, but does not act in line with his words. - Calling me dear, saying he misses me, I really enjoy your company, etc. all very nice things to hear (read through text). He says he hopes he can do something for me for my birthday which is either him being nice or him actually hoping that we continue on with each other but in that case, why make such little effort to actually make plans with me and talk to me? He’s big on sporadic texting convos throughout the day. I understand having a job, so do I lol and I’m studying everyday but…I am used to dating people who diligently make time for me as I do for them. He works from home 9-6 M-F. No pets or other responsibilities that I know of at least. He doesn’t ask me what my schedule is like so that he can plan even a phone call (which I have done, and yesterday I also asked him if he wanted to do something with me and the answer was just essentially “oh no I can’t I’m sorry,” no offer of an alternative). He cancelled our second date and didn’t even try to plan a new one. When I asked him later that week if he wanted to get together again, it was “I was going to ask but…” I don’t even remember what his reasoning was, I think something about being “nervous”. He says he’s shy. That is also inconsistent (he touched me on our first date and asked me for a hug both of which I was fine with, saying he misses me a day after our first date etc. don’t seem to be shy things), but idk I’ve never dated a shy or reserved person so I am a bit out of my depth to determine what is normal/a symptom of that and what is a red flag. - As much as we have in common, would I be throwing it away if I didn’t want to go into a relationship with someone with whom I have to initiate everything? and I’m not sure if I have to patience to teach a 32 year old how to date/ show clear interest/ put in effort. This will probably sound petty lol but also he doesn’t seem the least bit concerned with trying to impress me (and I just mean effort wise, at least at the beginning!?). I stay casual but do get all dolled up when we get together and on our second date (farmer’s market/breakfast) he wore sweatpants and an ill-fitting t-shirt.

I wanted to share what my first month in business has taught me about mobile food vending businesses. Especially wanted to throw this out there for all those who are looking into mobile food businesses or just starting.
Last month I started a food stand, I got permitted, licensed and bought all the equipment plus a hauling trailer. My business partner and I have spent about 18k to start and fund ourselves this first month (food, fees, supplies, equipment, etc.). We both knew that everything would be a loss at first. We also both have full time jobs so this is a side thing and not a primary source of income. We have worked every weekend at markets for the past month. We made about 5k. It's been tough. Here's some stuff we have learned so far.
Food stands are only a way to make money seasonally where we live. We live in WA and the past month showed us how little people go out in a freezing cold rain. Can't blame them tho. So, before thinking about opening one, be realistic about how long you can stay in business in the year.
No matter how good your food is, if you are not at the right location you will not make money!! The location is very important. If you are in a market that is oversaturated with the same food as you, people are less likely to give the new person a try.
You will not make money for sometime. You cannot rely on this for income at the beginning. This is a money pit in the beginning. Focus on building a following.
Get some socials up and logo designs, business cards, ways of connecting with people. Get in fb groups for food trucks and pop ups. You literally have to be a salesperson at first to get people to give you a try. BANNERS with pictures of your food! People eat with their eyes.
If your food is good enough after that one try they will hooked. This is what we have experienced. But we literally had to convince people to just try us. Giving samples etc. Once they tried our food, they came back everyday we were open, sometimes multiple times a day.
Your food matters. It's the representation of you and your business. Don't put mediocre shit out there, they will not come back. Give samples. People love that.
Keep the menu small, especially at first until you have mastered the initial menu.
Do not come into this thinking your gonna be making good money at first because you won't. You will give a lot of time and money for no return for a while.
Lastly, I am sure next month will bring forth more lessons/challenges to learn. I remind myself to stay optimistic because there are times where you question it all. It's gonna take time. More than I had initially anticipated. But that's how it is.

So I have always hated forgetting or losing things, moreso than the average person. I buy books I like, write down the names of things, and will soon be converting my physical media (vhs/dvd/etc) to digital to have it in multiple places. I assume most here are of the same mindset as me, though maybe more dedicated. After being thoroughly confused by the wiki, and combing through old posts, I thought I should just ask a few questions.
I don't really need help with the actual copying part, there are plenty of guides out there (makeMKV seems to be the best suggestion for DVDs in this sub, according the wiki). I have also looked around for the actual storage device. I don't have enough data to be worth getting a server rack, and the more "manual" forms seem slow (like mdisc) since I plan to tap into these fairly often. What I will end up doing is probably having a couple USB drives, each with a copy of my "cache" of stuff, be it photos or movies or games or whatnot. Probably every 5 years I will just copy everything over to a new drive, to counteract any kind of physical deterioration with the drive (my research seems to point that they are finnicky when it comes to how long they can last). These caches will be large enough to not be worth combing through every time I copy stuff to check it works. At the time that I transfer the data, is there any kind of non-invasive software I can run the files through to make sure they are still readable? Because I don't want to go to look at a photo and see that 10 years ago it got corrupted and is gone.
TL;DR
I want to keep my stuff on USB drives to access often, but replace every 5 years. What can I do to ensure I don't lose whatever is on the drives? Or are there better options for this scenario than a flash drive?
