Hi all,
I’m in the market for a new sewing machine and have done a lot of searching here and Google but am still feeling overwhelmed.
I mainly sew clothes/costumes with the occasional quilt/home project thrown in. I’d like a machine to have buttonhole capability and probably a zigzag stitch because I will sometimes finish knit hems that way.
I know a lot of people love Singer Featherweights and vintage machines in general. I’m definitely willing to put in the time to find one but don’t exactly know what to look for. If I buy new/newly used I would probably go with a Bernina.
I’ve considered going industrial but my space (and budget) aren’t ready for that. I would say budget is around $500 but if I can score a $20 vintage at a yard sale that just needs tuning that would be a dream (obviously)!
Final thing is I have access to my grandmas old MG Ward Signature, which is what I learned on. I’m just not sure it works and/or would be a good vintage machine to work with.
All thoughts appreciated!

I’ve (F 28) had a friend since college. I am a high earner in a HCOL city. She is in the same city and makes around half of what I make. We both grew up middle class but as the relatively poor kids at schools where the rich sent their kids. Ever since I moved to her city she has called me cheap, because I do things like make us bus instead of Uber and say no to buying drinks at clubs. Other than that, she has been a great friend.
She was unemployed a few months between jobs and I noticed her relationship with money start shifting. She started wanting men to give her a “princess treatment” and on LNY she spent her red envelopes on clothes as soon as she got them. At the time I did say it would be financially wiser to save them. She was embarrassed to have to start financially depending on her parents again. She normally is super independent.
Things came to a head for her birthday. A few weeks before she texted me asking for a gift that’s over $100. It’s from a brand that’s very hyped but poor quality (both of us have bought things from them before), and the item isn’t on sale. I thought this was delusional and said nothing. A week later she asked for something else that was $85, and since Sephora was about to have its insider sale and I forgot her gift last year I bought it feeling like it was a good purchase.
We met up for a free corporate lunch days before her birthday as we’d be in different cities the actual day. She said every time I do/say something cheap it makes her hate me a little.
When we got back, to celebrate a new job, she started doing a few things I was concerned was living beyond her means, like buying expensive clothes and ordering delivery (normally fine, but after a few months of unemployment seemed like a lot). After years of being called cheap, I called her spending financially unwise and asked if was still able to return what she had bought.
It escalated today when she sent me a book with a titled, “Why We Hate Cheap Things.” I wrote back “At least my ability to retire won’t be dependent on me marrying a rich man.” She wrote back she’s her own sugar daddy and I was putting her down. To her credit, before she was unemployed she was super independent.
I decided to be thoughtful about it and explain I don’t mean to put her down, but I am concerned about her financial literacy. I explained to her I know we do things differently. I invest or save half of what I make, and offered to share with her some resources that helped me gain financial literacy to take money being fun to a tool. I know she makes less than me, but all income levels can benefit from having more financial literacy.
She wrote back saying I was judging her lifestyle and she rather live in the moment because the future is not guaranteed. She pointed out health is more important than money, which she has a point, I’ve skipped Drs appointments I could afford because they are $500 an appointment with insurance. That said now she is angry at my judginess. AITA?

Hey all, I’m in the middle of negotiations with someone for an 87 535is. I might be giving up after today.
Here’s what I know: The car is sitting around the corner from my house and has been for at least 4 years. It’s on a main road sitting just off the driveway in the woods. In 2021 I inquired about buying it after noticing it never moved for at least a year, could be longer. They weren’t ready to sell and were only storing it for their nephew. Well just the other day a for sale sign was out on it. So I stopped and there was only a phone number on it. But the homeowner happened to be home so I talked to him. The car belongs to his nephew who has been in jail for three years and has six to go. He finally put his foot down and told his in-laws to get it out of his yard. So the phone number on the for sale sign is the car owners sister and I was told that she has no idea what she wants for it so make an offer.
The homeowner had the key and had put a battery in it a week ago. So he started it for me and it fired right up on old gas. He confirmed the power steering belt cracked off when he started it the other day because the pulley is seized. He mentioned the water pump too but wasn’t sure and in that brief moment I didn’t have time to investigate. He put it in gear and tried to move it but from sitting so long the rear wheels are in ruts/holes roughly a 1/4 of the way so the car would only rock back and forth but rear wheels were spinning. Trunk had some water in it but didn’t notice any rust in spare tire area. (Is that tub metal?). From inside the trunk and engine compartment the shock towers looked great but no way I could see the under side. Interior is ok. I forgot to look at the dash and mileage based on the brief visit but could go back next week. The front seats had normal wear based on age. Maybe a tare or two in driver seat. Rear seat looked great except for fading and maybe a bit of mold from sitting so long. Nothing seemed wet inside, headliner looked good. I did try and look underneath the car but because of the ruts it’s so low that I believe the rear axel is sitting on the ground and there are leaves all around the rest of the car mostly noticed looking down through engine compartment.
I’m confident it’s a true IS based on the proper seats, ground effects, spoiler, and trunk holding open half way. No reason to think otherwise. I did take the best pics I could have of the build sheet under the rear seat but haven’t tried to figure it out yet. Oh running the VIN does show aero package, sport suspension, 25% differential lock, electric seat, etc. it’s a 5spd, silver with black interior. Body is good. A couple minor dings. Paint is faded especially on hood and roof. No noticeable rust.
So I initially texted the person trying to figure out asking price. They answered some questions but never the price. So I made an offer of $2,000. I agree with the car owner that it was probably a bit low but I was really just testing the waters and again tried to get the price they had in mind. Still no answer. After she told me the 2k was low I upped to $3,500. She again said that’s too low. I pushed again for asking price stating that I’m seeing driveable/roadworthy ones online for in the 7-8k range. She agreed hers wasn’t roadworthy but with a little TLC it could be worth $10k+. I’ve bought and sold plenty of classic cars. I would hardly consider, needing tires, all new brakes, and whatever else unknowns the car has as TLC. But she came back at $7,250.
Is she way off? Should I walk away? I believe her brother from jail is telling her the car is worth way more than it is. (Uncles words not mine). I’m friendly with the uncle, as he lives next door to my wife’s cousins so he tells me people stop all the time to look at the car. Last thing, I’ve been told the title is not in brothers name and has been transferred to sister. Sorry for the long post. If I go back anything else I should really try and look at?

20+ years ago my wife and I bought a grill from Home Depot. We happened to go to one that was a few miles from our house even though there was one closer. Got it home. My wife was super excited as it was a really big purchase for us at the time.
The next day I am at home putting it together and when I get to the stand it's just not working. It takes me a bit but I realize there is definitely something wrong with the stand. So I call the Home Depot closest to me to see if, instead of taking the entire grill apart to put it back in the box, I can just return the stand. I'm put on hold.....for a long time. So long I call from her cell and ask if they are aware they have had someone waiting on hold for x amount of time (I want to say 30 minutes but not sure)
They transfer me to someone in outdoors. I explain the situation and ask if I can just swap out the stand. He tells me no. Keep in mind I still have the receipt and just bought this less then 24 hours earlier from another Home Depot. I nicely ask to speak to a manager, because I realize he probably doesn't have the authority to say yes. Not his fault.
Manager gets on the phone and I explain everything. Including the wait on hold. Nope, I have to bring in the entire grill. 🤨. At this point I am upset. Mostly because my wife is crying. I don't know why, and 20+ years later I still don't know why she was crying over this but she did. This I don't take lightly.
So I tell the manager ok. If that's what I need to do I will. However, I am an electrician and am self employed. I buy most of my materials at Home Depot. I'm small, so it's probably around a hundred thousand a year in sales. Drop in the bucket for Home Depot. And I don't make empty promises so I'm not going to tell him that I won't ever shop there again. But I do promise you that I won't spend a dime there for at least a year.
He says that he is sorry and wishes there was something he could do to change my mind. I remind him that there is. Just swap out the stand. He still says no. Ok. We're done.
Promised kept. I not only didn't spend a dime there for a year. It lasted over 15 years. And in the last 5+ years I have only shopped there a handful of times. HOWEVER, I would go in there any time I needed to return items. And when I would do returns it would be a bunch of miscellaneous items and usually be $500-1000.
I did this for 2 reasons. First, most stores, when they get returns, they are counted as negative sales. Regardless of where they are bought. So not only did they not get the sales credit for the things I bought. They got negative sales for the things I returned.
The second reason was to fill out the survey on the receipt. I would never ding the cashier who helped me do the returns and would often praise them. But I would always put in the comments my experience with the grill and the manager and why I would not spend money in that store.
For the record, I called the store that we bought the grill at and they were more then happy to just replace the stand. Even after I told them about the other store they seemed confused as to why they said no.

I used toms hardware GPU hierarchy and bought 7800 XT on sale for $425 before tax. The rest of my system is 12600kf, gigabyte mobo, ddr4 64 gb ram (for work related applications), Samsung 3440x1440 100hz 34 inch ultra wide.
For gaming I mostly play fortnite with my son (he's on 5600x + 3060ti). My graphics are not running smoothly and in order to hit 100 fps reliably, I pretty much have to turn down all of my graphics settings pretty drastically. It's been an exercise of frustration for the past week or two.
After reading on many different subreddits, fortnite allegedly does not play well with amd gpus. I'm thinking of exchanging my 7800xt for one of the 4070 GPUs. A vanilla 4070 is $500 and according to GPU hierarchy it will be a step backward. 4070 super is $600 but that's nearly 50% price increase for something that shows hardly any improvement on GPU hierarchy.
Am I an idiot for giving up the $425 sale on my 7800xt? Or was it on sale for this very reason? Been racking my brain this past week testing every setting and I'm sort of losing my mind. Any help please!

I currently have a Vivomove Style that I purchased back in 2020. There was a pretty good sale on it so I decided to upgrade from my Fitbit. I do love it, but I think I'd like to move on to a new watch.
I used to primarily strength train, but I've flipped over to running. I run 4x per week and I am currently training for a half marathon. I like to wear my watch pretty much 24/7 because I love having all of the heath metrics (however inaccurate they may be).
ANYWAY with that limited amount of information, what Garmin would you recommend? I've been looking at the Forerunners and the Venus, but I am SO overwhelmed. I'd appreciate any insight (I.e. pros/cons, personal experience and preferences, etc.)
