2024.04.20 21:22 bAMBIEN Muscles used to draw bow

Hi guys, I’m sorry to ask this low level question. But I’m new to archery, I have a compound with a 60lb draw. I’m very fit and would consider myself strong, though nothing even close to elite.
My question is, I use a UV button, so my draw should take me right to my anchor point, with my elbow up and my palm facing away from my face. Which means I initiate my draw with my palm out and my elbow up as well.
My problem is, this puts a lot of strain on my rear delt. I’m having trouble figuring out which muscle group I should be using, as the rear deltoid is a small and weaker muscle. And too much shoulder can lead to injury. When I draw with my elbow down and my palm facing inside, and I can initiate my lat, I can do that all day no problem. Because lats are the biggest muscle of the back.
My question is, which muscles should I be recruiting in a draw with proper form? I know I’m supposed to be separating. So I do try and use my bow arm to push away. And I also try and use my rhomboids/lower trap, but I find those have low range of motion, so they mostly help in the last step when you’re breaking the wall.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you.
EDIT:
Since it seems like people are being dismissive and kind of mean, I thought my comment down further might clarify:
While I’m no expert by any means, I actually have been shooting my father in laws hand me down Darton for about 5 months now. He tore his rotator cuff some years ago so he had it set at 45 lbs. I could shoot that all day no problem so I bumped it up slowly to 50, 55, and 60.
My question was mostly about form, because I think I CAN draw with proper form. But when I watch YouTube videos it seems like people pull 60 lbs like I pulled 45. And they’re usually guys who don’t look very strong like Chris Bee.
But I totally understand where you’re coming from. I promise I’m not like sky drawing or doing anything similar. It just seems like 60 lbs is too hard for me considering my fitness level.
I’ve also purchased a third hand can’t release and have been doing 3 sets x 10 reps of just drawing and repeating to help me out. Also, since I lift regularly, I’m very aware of the ‘mind-muscle’ connection so i was asking so that I can like picture and feel which muscles I should be recruiting.

2024.04.18 21:13 bladeze300 Draw Modules for 2005 Darton Maverick Extreme

Hey Archery! I've recently acquired an older darton compound from a friend of mine, but the draw length module isn't the right one for my draw length. I need the 75% letoff number 1 module, which I believe the part number would be 175B. I've checked eBay and I asked Darton directly and they said to check online forums, so here I am! Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

PC / Next-Gen / Stand-alone Questions

Q) If I buy on Rockstar Launcher, can I play with friends on Steam?
Yes, you can play with friends on PC regardless of what store they bought it from. Even Steam GTA, uses Rockstar to launch the game.
Q) Can we transfer our characters from PS4 and Xbox One to PC?
No, you cannot transfer characters to a different platform, e.g Xbox to PC. The game is cross-gen however, so if you play PS4 you can continue on PS5.
Q) If I buy a next-gen console, can I play with friends on old-gen consoles?
Yes! The game is backwards compatible on console, so you can play with friends on PS4/PS5 or XB1/XBX
Q) If I already own Red Dead Redemption 2, do I need to buy Red Dead Online again when it goes standalone?
No! Red Dead Online is still part of the RDR2 game.

Red Dead Online: General Questions

Q) What are the currencies in Red Dead Online?
Cash, the main currency in RDO that is earned through almost every activity.
Gold Bars, the premium currency in RDO that can be purchased using real money. You earn a small amount of gold for completing activities online.
Role Tokens, earned by levelling up in each role, used to unlock abilities & items for the five current roles.
Q) What is the Outlaw pass?
The Outlaw Pass is an in-game purchase using the premium Gold currency that allows you to earn items/rewards as you level up.
Outlaw Pass are only available for a limited time and once they finish, you can't access them again.
Q) What are Daily Challenges?
Every day at 6am UTC, you are given a new list of 7 daily challenges as well as 15 role daily challenges. They can range from hunting specific animals or finding certain herbs, to completing PVP/Freeroam events.
Initially, you earn 0.1 Gold per completed challenge plus a bonus if you complete all 7 regular challenges.
After completing at least 1 challenge per day for 7 days, you then earn a little more gold per challenge each week before your daily challenge streak resets after 28 days.
Your daily challenge streak will then reset, and you start the process again.
In addition to this, there are also 3 daily challenges for each role available and you can do a max of 9 role daily challenges. Daily challenges for roles will also differ depending on your rank within each role.
Q) What are Free-roam events (role/normal)

You can see the schedule for free-roam & role events here
Q) What are ability cards?
Abilities in Red Dead Online are assigned to a character through Ability Cards. These are divided into two different types. Dead Eye cards that grant abilities only active during Dead Eye, while Passive cards add abilities that are always active, no matter what you do. Passive abilities are further divided into several different categories.
In Red Dead Online, it's not possible to assign all of the available abilities to the character, as there are only 4 slots available. One slot is used for a single Dead Eye card, while the remaining three slots are used for Passive abilities. Source.
Q) What are the playing styles online?
Defensive: Players in Defensive mode will be indicated by a shield icon, will take reduced damage from enemy players, cannot be lassoed, melee attacked, executed or targeted with auto-aim. Defensive players will also be excluded from being targeted in PvP-related missions such as Player Assassination. Those who attack Defensive players receive hefty penalties via the Hostility system, while players who initiate conflict while in Defensive mode will be instantly pulled out of Defensive mode and also receive similar Hostility penalties.
Offensive: The Offensive playing style is set as the default and is how most players traditionally interact in Free Roam – free to engage in hostile contact with other players if you are prepared to accept the potential consequences.

Red Dead Online: Roles

Q) Can I have more than 1 role active?
Yes! You can play in all roles concurrently.

Bounty Hunter Role

Q) What is the Bounty Hunter role?
Get started as a Bounty Hunter when you meet the Legendary Bounty Hunter in Rhodes and purchase the Bounty Hunter License. The standard cost is 15 Gold Bars.
Licensed Bounty Hunters can pick up work by visiting bounty boards located near law offices, post offices and train stations across the states. There is no shortage of criminals to be dealt with and the targets range in difficulty, from lone low-level petty thieves to notorious outlaws with armed protection details and a watchful eye. Taking on an armed gang or bringing multiple targets to justice is made easier with the help of a Posse, who will all earn a cut of the final bounty. And keep in mind, bringing in targets alive will yield a greater reward.
Reaching Bounty Hunter Rank 12 will open up the opportunity to take down other players with high bounties of $20 or more. Bounty Hunters will be notified through an invite about the opportunity to hunt down the wanted player when they’re nearby in a structured pursuit. The wanted player must escape (or surrender) within the allotted time and if captured, they’ll also have opportunities to escape and flee. If the Bounty Hunter brings the target in alive, they’ll receive an award while the criminal serves time.
Q) What are legendary bounties?
Legendary bounties are high-tier bounties, they usually involve a mini-story/cut scene. They're also much tougher than a regular bounty.
There are 10 legendary bounties that can be access as part of the Bounty Hunter role and 3 that can be accessed (when they've all released) by purchasing the Prestigious Bounty Hunter upgrade.

Trader Role

Q) What is the Trader role?
our trusted camp companion, Cripps, has long dreamed of starting a trading outpost and you’re going to help him make it happen - by becoming a partner in the fledgling Cripps Trading Company. Combining Cripps’ lifetime of working with animal materials and your skills at hunting and frontier security, you’ll have the perfect ingredients to develop a thriving business.
Once you agree to help Cripps, you can start turning your camp into a business by sourcing items for Cripps to convert into sellable goods. An investment of 15 Gold Bars to purchase a Butcher’s Table will get your business up and running.
Once you’re operational, you’ll provide Cripps with Materials through hunting animals – pristine pelts and carcasses will provide better yields. You’ll also take on Resupply Missions to acquire additional necessities through less than savory tactics. Once supplied, Cripps will begin turning the materials into sellable goods, which can then be sent out on low-risk local deliveries for payment or across greater distances for a premium.
Improve your hunting yields with a Hunting Wagon for larger hauls or upgrade your Delivery Wagons for larger sales. As business flourishes and your presence becomes known in the market, your competition may grow jealous of your success, so keep an eye out for raids on your camp. As your trade grows, you might consider purchasing a camp dog from Wilderness Outfitters. Not only are dogs great camp companions for all players, but a Trader of sufficient rank can teach their dog to warn of incoming attacks.
Q) Can I skip the medium wagon?
No, you need to buy the medium wagon, then the large wagon.
Q) What can I sell to Cripps?
You can sell carcasses & small animals (e.g squirrels). Along with some animal parts, e.g feathers.
Cripps does not accept meat, fish or skinned carcasses.
Q) How long does it take Cripps to make goods after resupplying?
Cripps requires materials and supplies to produce goods. You give him materials by donating carcasses and pelts. He uses two units of materials to produce one good. You either buy supplies or obtain them through resupply missions. Either way, that gives enough supplies to produce 25 goods. As long as both materials and supplies are available, Cripps produces 1 good every 2 minutes (1 in-game hour).

Collector Role

Q) What is the Collector role?
Seek out the mysterious travelling saleswoman Madam Nazar to acquire the Collector’s Bag and get started on the path of the Collector. It will cost 15 Gold Bars for access to collecting and selling rare items.
With Madam Nazar’s help, you will be able to explore the world finding valuable treasures, whether they’re discarded Tarot cards in abandoned camps, buried treasures unearthed with your trusty shovel, hidden family heirlooms and more.
Collect individual pieces and sell them off directly to Madam Nazar or collect entire sets for even more valuable sales. As you progress, you’ll unlock enhanced searching skills; more useful tools like a metal detector; benefits like increased carrying capacities; the ability for your horse to directly pluck and pass herbs to you while mounted, and more.
Q) Where is Madam Nazar?
Madam Nazar can be located by completing a map/collection for her. Her location is posted daily on /RedDeadDailies - She changes location at 6am UTC time each day.
You can also find her using https://madamnazar.io/
Q) Who is Madam Nazar?
Madam Nazar is the Collector role vendor, you can obtain maps, cosmetics & other items such as the shovel from her.
Q) Why is Madam Nazar?
...
Q) Where do you buy a shovel?
From Madam Nazar, it costs $350. If you need help finding her, check /RedDeadDailies
Q) Where do you buy a metal detector?
From Madam Nazar, it unlocks at level 5 and costs $700. If you need help finding her, check /RedDeadDailies
Q) Can you sell collector items individually or does it need to be a full set?
Yes, however you get far less money than you would if you sold a full collection
Q) Can you only have one collector map active?
Yes, if you try to open a second map, it may auto-close and almost looks like a bug, however, you should only try and activate one at any given time.

Moonshiner Role:

Q) I already met Maggie but I didn't buy a shack, now I can't find how to buy the shack?
In the options menu (left on the D-pad, or L on PC), select "Camp & Properties" → "Moonshine Shack" → "Shack Location".
Will be expanded upon soon...

Naturalist Role

Will be updated soon...

Bear Ranger Recurve - info request
The folks in archery suggested I post here. Just received this and have spent a few days digging and doing research but have come up with very sparse information- possibly only distributed to clubs or organizations, possibly 20-24# I’ve gone through the old catalogs and pdf scans but haven’t even found the ranger mentioned. I contacted Bear but haven’t heard back yet. I’m really just hoping to learn more about this mystery bow.

2024.03.15 14:55 gsteff (Spoilers Extended) Secrets of the Cushing Library: the ACOK and ASOS drafts

Welcome to part 2 of my 2024 series about George's drafts of the first three ASOIAF novels. Yesterday, I looked at the changes in the early drafts of A Game of Thrones.. Today, I'll look at the drafts of Clash and Storm (I covered the differences in George's drafts of Feast a year ago- part 1, part 2, part 3). If you're unfamiliar with the Cushing Library and the previous research that has been done on George's drafts, I'd encourage you to see the my first Cushing Library post for an introduction.

A Clash of Kings: The Glass Candles

The Cushing Library only really contains one working draft of ACOK, from June 1997 (there's another final draft with no substantial changes from the published version). That one draft has 31 chapters and 567 manuscript pages, roughly 48% of the final text (you can see the chapter structure in my ASOIAF drafts spreadsheet). Sadly, it doesn't include Clash's most important chapter for foreshadowing, Dany's vision in the House of the Undying.
The most interesting change in the ACOK draft relates to something that was hinted at in the letter I found from George to his editors about the AFFC prologue: that George had been wrestling with how to introduce the glass candles long before Feast was published. Originally, they were to have had a significant role in Clash, starting with the prologue:
As you can see, there's no new lore here, just stuff that eventually made it into Feast. But it is interesting that George tried make the ignition of the candles coincide with the arrival of the red comet. A few pages later, he seemed to connect them more directly. There's a passage in the published version of this chapter where Cressen thinks about the comet before going to bed. Originally, it read like this:
Yet when he closed his eyes, he could still see the pale bright flame of the glass candle, burning steadily against the inside of his eyelids. As he watched, it grew into the comet, red and fiery and vividly alive amidst the darkness of his dreams.
There's also a deleted line after he wakes up about him having had dark, terrible dreams, perhaps somehow prompted by the candle. And after he falls and Mellisandre help him up at the feast, Cressen has this deleted thought:
She knows why the glass candle burns, what the comet portends. She is wiser than you, old man.
In retrospect, the last line of this chapter was originally written as a callback to Cressen's ominous glass candle. Here's the published version:
And the cowbells peeled in his antlers, singing fool, fool, fool while the red woman looked down on him in pity, the candle flames dancing in her red, red eyes.
The draft chapter's final line has slight wording differences, but is effectively the same.
The glass candles are explicitly mentioned twice more in this draft, both in Tyrion chapters. As the passage above indicates, in this version of the story, all maesters have their own glass candle that they're supposed to try and fail to light each day as an exercise in humility. Pycelle evidently has one too, and as Tyrion is searching Pycelle's chambers for the indigestion poison he wants to give to Cersei, he sees Pycelle's glass candle burning:
Behind the shelves, hidden behind an ornate lacquer screen, he stumbled on a tiny windowless alcove where a tall black candle was burning atop a carved marble shelf. Something about it made Tyrion want to examine it more closely, but he knew he was running short of time. He made a hasty retreat back to the table, and was peeling another egg when Grand Maester Pycelle came creeping back down the stair.
The second mention happens as Tyrion ambushes Pycelle as the Grand Master is in bed with a whore- the terrified Pycelle indicates that the candles are bad news:
"My lord, please, you must heed me, you are in danger, all of you, grave danger, the realm, there's so much you do not know, secrets, the hidden mysteries... the glass candle is burning, it's true, I swear, spare me and I'll show you... the Conclave... you must send me to Oldtown at once..."
Pycelle's reference to the Conclave is interesting, because this draft is also sprinkled with deleted mentions of maesters being unexpectedly out of town. As Theon arrives at Pkye and asks where his old maester Qalen is, Helya replied:
He sleeps in the sea. Wendamyr keeps the ravens now, but he is gone south to Oldtown on some maester's business.
And as Bran is listening to petitioners at Winterfell in Bran 2, there's this altered description of Leobald Tallhart's visit:
He talked of weather portents and the slack wits of the smallfolk for what seemed like hours, complained that his maester had left them to visit the Citadel, and told how his nephew Benfred itched for battle.
Evidently, in this draft, the Citadel quickly became aware that the glass candles were burning, considered it a big deal (according to Pycelle, it put the realm in grave danger), and called a Conclave to discuss the ramifications. This is different from how they're treated in AFFC- there, Marwyn seems to be the only maester aware that they now work again.
Nearly all this was deleted, but remember that George did retain one mention of the glass candles in Clash, when Xaro tells Dany about all the strange magical phenomenon that have been witnessed recently. Dany reminds him that he'd said the warlocks were nothing to fear, and Xaro replies:
And so it was, then. But now? I am less certain. It is said that the glass candles are burning in the house of Urrathon Night-Walker, that have not burned in a hundred years. Ghost grass grows in the Garden of Gehane, phantom tortoises have been seen carrying messages between the windowless houses on Warlock’s Way, and all the rats in the city are chewing off their tails. The wife of Mathos Mallarawan, who once mocked a warlock’s drab moth-eaten robe, has gone mad and will wear no clothes at all. Even fresh-washed silks make her feel as though a thousand insects were crawling on her skin. And Blind Sybassion the Eater of Eyes can see again, or so his slaves do swear. A man must wonder.
So what does all this mean? First, here's my guess as to what happened to George's candles plans:
And what does this mean for the story? Given that this glass candle material was specifically deleted and then replaced with other glass candle material in AFFC, I don't think we can read much into it. But if I had to draw conclusions, mine would be these:
But really, this material is 27 years old at this point- it's interesting, but whatever plans George had for the glass candles and the Citadel then have been overtaken by the later books.

A Clash of Kings: Cersei's Mole

The second interesting set of changes in the draft of Clash relates to Tyrion's attempt (in ACOK Tyrion 4) to flush out the identity of Cersei's informant by feeding Pycelle, Littlefinger and Vary three different stories about his plans for Cersei's children, and seeing which story Cersei learns about. There are some key differences in the draft that may change your understanding of what happened canonically, but this change is a bit tricky, so before getting into it, recall these details from the published version:
Now, here's the draft version of the passage where Tyrion instructs Pycelle to send the letters:
And here's the draft version of Varys's arrival at Tyrion's bedchamber near the end of the same chapter:
The key differences are these:
What's the significance of this? I'm not sure, and I've spent a lot of time thinking about it. My best guess is that in the draft, George wanted to subtly indicate that Varys was the real leaker- having Tyrion notice two ravens leaving (as he almost subconsciously does in the draft) undermines the theory that Pycelle kept one of the ravens back. Having Varys appear so quickly when summoned in this draft may also have been meant as a hint that he was nearby listening to all Tyrion's conversations.
There's also a connection to the glass candles changes that makes me think that, at least in this draft, George meant for Pycelle to have been fully honest when interrogated by Tyrion, and Tyrion didn't realize it. The chapter in which Tyrion interrogates Pycelle about the leak also contains the deleted passage in which Pycelle warns that the glass candles are burning and the realm is in grave danger. Tyrion blows that warning off (at the end of the chapter he notices the glass candle Pycelle was talking about again, and cheekily extinguishes it). We know from other draft chapters (and future books) that the glass candles are real and significant, so Tyrion's reaction there is likely meant to seem misguided. When you combine that with the fact that Pycelle denies being the leaker (blaming Varys instead), and that Pycelle quickly admits to a number of other crimes, I think that in that draft chapter, Tyrion is meant to be mistaken about Pycelle, and likely being played by Varys. George's decision to go from Tyrion noticing two ravens to noticing one, and increasing the amount of time before Varys arrives might indicate that he wanted to drop that idea and just make Pycelle the leaker in the published version- but I personally think Varys could still be a candidate there too.
Having said all that, I really struggled with analyzing this section, and am interested to see your interpretations of these changes.

A Clash of Kings: Other changes

The removal of the glass candles is only significant change to the plot of ACOK, but there are a number of other interesting small changes. First, at the end of Bran's harvest feast chapter, when Jojen and Meera Reed meet Bran's direwolf, the draft has this deleted line from Meera as Jojen approaches Summmer:
Go careful, Jojen. Remember what father said.
It's not much, but given how much speculation there is about the current status of Howland Reed, this at least provides an indication that Howland was at home in the Neck at the beginning of Clash. A variety of characters (Maester Luwin, Robb) have tried to contact Howland in the Neck, but this is the only report we have from someone who actually interacted with him recently. The line may also indicate that (when the draft was written), George meant for Howland to have particular interest in the direwolves, and perhaps understand their magical significance. I think this deletion, like most deletions, was likely done for length, not to change the story or better conceal important mysteries.
There's another deleted Bran passage one chapter earlier, in which Bran wants to ride Dancer into the Great Hall for the harvest feast, but Maester Luwin refuses, saying "it would not be seemly." The chapter ends with this line from Ser Rodrik:
"You have a Stark's pride, Bran, but the maester has the right of this, I think. Riding through the Great Hall... no, we will carry you in, with all dignity and honor. Believe me, boy, it will be best that way."
But riding Dancer into the Great Hall for the feast, to hearty cheers from the guests, is exactly how Bran's next chapter begins, in both the draft and published books. So the published version loses a bit of context from the draft- it's implied that Bran must have put his foot down and gotten his way, and been proven right.
Another interesting change comes at the end of Daenerys 2, when she sends Jorah out to the docks of Qarth to looks for ships that might be able to transport them. As published, Jorah returns with Quhuru Mo, the captain of the Cinnamon Wind, who informs Dany of the death of Robert Baratheon. Originally, George intended for Jorah to return with Daario Naharis. Here's a sample of his introduction:
His introduction and description is very similar to as published in ASOS Daenerys 4. And he gives Dany the same information as Quhuru does- those parts of his dialogue are transferred largely unchanged to Quhuru. But in this introduction, he swears himself to Dany's service immediately (in Storm he only does that on their second meeting, after he betrays the the other captains of his sellsword company) and Dany invites him to dinner so that she can hear the tale of his voyage from Tyrosh.
This deletion wasn't done for space, IMO, but simply because it didn't make a ton of sense for a Tyroshi sellsword in Qaarth to be the person bringing Dany the latest news from Westeros. I suspect that George originally introduced him in this chapter because he wanted to emphasize the pattern of Jorah warning Dany not to trust anyone else- earlier in this chapter, Jorah warns her against trusting Pyat Pree, Xaro and Quaithe. But introducing Daario in this way just made much less sense than the obvious alternative of having her receive the news from a ship captain.
There's only one substantial deleted passage from Jon's chapters, a flashback to a conversation with Sam, Grenn and Pyp before he left for the Great Ranging. Pyp offered to trade places with Sam, but Grenn says that the deception would never work. This is another likely brevity deletion- it adds nothing to the story, but saved George 2/3 of a page.
There's one small deletion from another Jon chapter that likely does have story significance though. During the conversation between Jon and Mormont about Maester Aemon's biography early in Jon 1, the draft contains this deleted exchange:
The Old Bear gave a loud snort, and the raven took flight, flapping in a circle about the room. "If I had a man for every vow I have seen broken in my day, the Wall would not lack for defenders, I promise you. Especially when... it might have been you, Jon. You are the elder, are you not?"
"By a few turns of the moon. But Robb is trueborn. That is what he shares with Maester Aemon."
The published books give no indication of whether Jon or Robb is older. But if Jon is older, it makes the story of Ned fathering him while he was away during Robert's Rebellion impossible, because Robb was conceived with Catelyn a fortnight before Ned departed for the war. I suspect that George originally put this in because he wanted to provide a hint that Ned wasn't Jon's father, but then ultimately took it out because the hint was too obvious, and Catelyn and many other characters would have easily realized the same thing.
The same passage also makes one small change to Maester Aemon's biography- as published, he chose to go to the Wall to avoid undermining his younger brother, King Aegon. In the original draft, Aegon was the one who sent him there, to avoid being compared to Aemon. The published version makes Aemon more noble.
The Clash draft chapters also have a deleted connection between Jon and Arya. There's a deleted line near the end of Arya 3 in which she thinks of Jon while falling asleep:
When Arya's eyes finally closed, it seemed as though her brother Jon was with her. He smiled at her, but something in his eyes looked sad, and she knew he had something important to tell her. They said it together. Winter is coming.
Interestingly, the next chapter is Jon 3, its end has a deleted mention of Jon thinking of Arya:
He suddenly remembered how he used to muss Arya's hair. His little stick of a sister. He wondered where she was now. It made him a little sad to think that he would never muss her hair again.
George was clearly setting up the two of them intersecting again. The fact that he deleted those passages, and that 3 books later it still hasn't happened, may indicate that he changed his mind about that during the writing of Clash.
In Sansa's chapters, there are some small changes to her dialogue with Dontos about escaping. Originally, Dontos planned for someone else to row Sansa out to sea during the escape:
Ser Dontos raised his face to her. "Taking you from the castle, that will be the hardest. Once you are out, I know a lad with a little skiff, for a bit of coin and a taste of wine he'd row you out to sea, to these fisherfolk I know... he's a mute, so he asks no questions and gives no answer."
A mute. Icy needles scraped up Sansa's spine. The King's justice was mute, and the very sight of Ser Ilyn filled her with dread. "When would this be? Could we go now?"
"This very night? No, my lady, I fear not. First I must speak to my friends, and find a sure way to get you from the castle when the hour is ripe. It will not be easy, nor quick. They watch me as well."
As you can see, originally Dontos also hinted that someone else was directing the plan, when he said he needed talk to his "friends" (i.e. Littlefinger)- another deleted line. There are no other hints as to who the mute might be, but evidently that was another abandoned subplot.
Some other quick hits:

ASOS: The Knight of the Laughing Tree

The library's ASOS draft is from July 1999, roughly 10 months before George finalized the manuscript, and contains 574 manuscript pages, roughly 38% of the final text. While by raw word count, the edits to Storm are unquestionably more extensive than for Clash and Game, they mostly take the form of heavier wordsmithing of the entire prose- there are no changes to major subplots on the same level as the deletion of the glass candles from Clash, or the change to Victarion's fate late in the writing of *Feast. But some of that wordsmithing may have significance to some of George's biggest mysteries.
The best example of that comes George's edits to the story of the Knight of the Laughing Tree in ASOS Bran 2. In Meera's telling of this story, the protagonist is a young crannogman- clearly Meera's father, Howland Reed, though she doesn't say that. According to Meera, "he could talk to trees and weave words and make castles appear and disappear." The story begins with Howland leaving his home in the Neck and visiting the mysterious Isle of Faces. He spends a winter there with the green man before continuing south. Here's how Howland's time on the Isle of Faces is described in the published book:
All that winter the crannogman stayed on the isle, but when the spring broke he heard the wide world calling and knew the time had come to leave. His skin boat was just where he'd left it, so he said his farewells and paddled off toward shore.
And here's how that passage went in the 1999 draft.
The crannogman dwelled on the isle through most of that winter... but when the spring broke he heard the wide world calling and knew the time had come to leave. His skin boat was just where he had left it, so he said his farewells to the trees and paddled off toward shore.
There are a few wording changes there, but the most significant is the shortening of the phrase "said his farewells to the trees" to just "said his farewells." Reasonable people can differ, but I think that phrase is potentially a major hint to the nature of the green men- i.e. the green men are, in some sense, trees.
This possibility shouldn't be too surprising- the story already contains one human-tree hybrid, Bloodraven. And both Bloodraven and the green men have connections to children of the forest- Bloodraven lives with the only known surviving Children, and the World of Ice and Fire suggested that some other Children may have survived on the Isle of Faces with the green men. The limited descriptions we have of the green men also include tree-like elements- later in this same chapter, Bran says that Old Nan told him that the green men had leaves instead of hair. Bran also says twice (in this chapter, and later in Storm) that Old Nan once told him that the green men have antlers, which could be a misinterpretation of tree branches. And the section on the green men in The World of Ice and Fire also says that their clothes are green- again, perhaps a misinterpretation of leaves or moss. If this is true, Bloodraven's nature could be foreshadowing the nature of the green men who Bran (most likely) will encounter later in the story.
This theory has problems, too- Old Nan also says that the green men are thought to ride elk, which doesn't sound tree-like, and the particular tree that Bloodraven is merging with is a weirwood- a tree instantly recognizable because its trunk and leaves are not green. So an alternative interpretation of the deleted "said his farewells to the trees" might be that Howland was able to communicate with the weirwoods that are also believed to populate the Isle, and that the Children, the green men and the weirwoods form a trinity of ice magic mediums that coexist on the Isle.
I lean towards the first theory though, mainly because George was clearly teasing the green men just a few sentences earlier- weirwoods aren't so secret that George would want to delete references hinting to their nature, but the green men are.
In addition to this change, there are a few other interesting changes to the story of the KOTLT worth mentioning. One of the next events in Howland's story is that he's attacked by three squires soon after arriving at the Tourney of Harrenhal. As published, he's rescued by "the she-wolf", who most readers understand to be Lyanna Stark. But in the draft, the crannogman is rescued by "a wild wolf"- Brandon Stark, Ned and Lyanna's dead brother. Here's the draft version of that passage:
"That's my father's man you sorry lot are kicking," came the roar of a wild wolf.
"A wolf on four legs, or two?" said Bran
"Two," said Meera, smiling. "He scattered the squires with a tourney sword, swatting them with the flat of the blade. The crannogman was bruised and bloodied, so the wild wolf took him back to his lair where his maiden sister cleaned his cuts and bound them up with linen. Soon the whole pack had gathered in the tent; the wolf's squire and serving men and friends, and his two young brothers as well. The middle brother was quiet and serious, the youngest brother a playful pup.
There's another small difference in the above passage worth mentioning- the "pup" is generally assumed to be the youngest Stark sibling, Benjen, but the published description of him doesn't include the word "playful." By the time we meet Benjen at the Wall, he's generally described as dark and serious. Others have suggested that something may have changed Benjen's personality around the time he joined the watch- the description of the young Benjen as "playful" could be considered more evidence for that.
The draft version of the KOTLT story also contains some deleted references to Rhaegar's newborn son Aegon being present:
The king presented his new grandson to the lords assembled upon a golden shield, and cups were raised to the boy, to his father, to their host and his daughter, the queen of love and beauty, and to the king's new Hand, the horn of plenty lord.
And elsewhere, Meera references "the wife of the dragon prince, who'd brought her newborn son to see his father joust."
I think that Aegon being alive during the tourney would have changed his chronology slightly- he was supposedly still an infant when he was killed by Gregor Clegane during the sack of King's Landing in 283 AC. If he were an infant during the Tourney, he'd have been 1 (probably 1.5) years old during the Sack, which IMO is beyond the cutoff for an infant (many one year olds can walk). Perhaps others can think of some significance to this, but it's also possible that it just didn't add anything to the story and was deleted for space.

ASOS: Arya

Another small wording change with potential significance to the story's endgame occurs in the draft of ASOS Arya 4, when word of the Kingslayer's release reaches Arya and her captors in the Brotherhood without Banners. In both the draft and published versions, Arya is ordered outside by Greenbeard when the conversation turns to Jaime's release by Catelyn, but in the draft, Arya remains infuriated by the rumor outside and says something interesting:
It's not true, Arys told herself as she ran out a back door. It couldn't be true.
Behind the sept an archery butt had been set up, and Anguy was giving Gendry a lesson in the longbow. They took one look at her and lowered their bows. "What's wrong?" asked Genry.
"It's just a lie!" Arya told him angrily, almost shouting. "She never would. If she did I'll kill her too."
"Who?"
"Her!" Arya shouted. She couldn't bring herself to say her mother's name to them.
A few readers have hypothesized that Arya is destined to kill Lady Stoneheart, and that doing that could bring closure to both Stoneheart and Arya's arcs... it does seem inevitable that Stoneheart will eventually meet one of her children again- un-Catelyn still deserves a modicum of closure and comfort- and Arya is as likely as any, given that George tried to connect them late in Storm via Nymeria's retrieval of Catelyn's body. I'm not remotely certain of this, but the deleted "If she did I'll kill her too" line feels like George's style of foreshadowing to me, if perhaps a bit clunkier than others. Having said that, Arya's chapters in ASOS received a lot of rewriting in general, and even if that line was significant, it was written and deleted 25 years ago, and George's plans could easily have changed.
There are a few other small changes in Arya's draft Storm chapters worth mentioning. While traveling with the brotherhood, there's a deleted mention of the group visiting an underground river:
A few days later, the searchers sheltered down below the ground in a torchlit cavern beside an underground river. One of the cave dwellers said the lightning lord had gone to Whitecrown, another insisted that he'd be found at Acorn Hill."
It's not much, but those who suspect that Westeros is riddled with an underground network of caverns might find that interesting.
The reference to "Whitecrown" above is the original name for High Heart, the hill ringed by ancient weirwood stumps. It's present, and with the same lore, but gets much less prose in this draft- no character like the Ghost of High Heart exists in this version.
Arya's chapter traveling with the brotherhood also includes a hint of a deleted subplot- when they arrive at Acorn Hill, Lady Smallwood informs them of an ominous-sounding singer named Honeytongue who is also searching for Beric Dondarion. Smallwood says that Honeytongue "wants to find Lord Beric and make him into a song, he claims." Which sounds like a not very subtle assassin to me. Smallwood says she directed him on to the Inn of the Kneeling Man. Perhaps George meant for him to kill Sharna and Husband, the Inn's current occupants.
There's also an interesting change to the Sandor Clegane's dialogue when Arya tries to kill him after he defeats Beric Donarrion. The draft of that chapter contains some deleted lines indicating some serious self-loathing underneath his mean exterior:
"You killed Mycah," she said once more, in a voice gone soft and small.
"I did." Then his voice broke, and he began to cry. "Mother have mercy, I did. I rode him down and cut him in half. And the little bird, the pretty little bird, I let them beat her. Gods be good girl, do it. You hear me? Do it!"
That material was mostly cut and moved to ASOS Arya 13, her last ASOS chapter, when he asks her for the gift of mercy but she abandons him. But in that context, Sandor's confessions function partly as manipulation to get her to end his suffering- in the draft's context, the self-loathing seems more honest.

ASOS: The Nature of the Others

There are a few small changes in this draft that might provide hints to the nature of the Others, if you squint. The first of these occurs in the draft's version of Jon 2, as Jon and Mance are inspecting the corpses atop the Fist of the First Men:
"Who did this?" Jon said.
"No men of women born." Mance Raydar had been kneeling over a corpse that looked like Brown Bernarr, but now he stood.
One of the unanswered questions about the Others is where they come from- are they somehow created from humans, or do they have a wholly unrelated biology. There's evidence for both positions in the books, but this deleted line could perhaps be taken as a hint that they are unrelated to men. There's no reason to think that Mance is an expert in the Others, but he is in a better position to understand them than most characters, and George also sometimes gives his fictional characters unearned wisdom for the sake of storytelling and foreshadowing. There's another deleted example of Mance having correct instincts on the Others- after instructing Harna to forget Mormont, Mance originally said "If the Others did not linger here to raise these dead, it can only mean they're hunting down the living." Mance is right about this, as the very next chapter shows (in which Sam is hunted by and eventually defeats an Other).
That chapter contains a second possible deleted hint about the creatures' nature. At the end of Sam's first ASOS chapter, after Sam stabs the Other with his dragonglass dagger, the published book says that the Other tries to pull out the dagger, "but where its fingers touched the obsidian they smoked." Originally, George said that its fingers melted instead of smoked. I think it's very likely that George made this change simply because he liked the imagery of fingers smoking more than melting. But the fact that he considered melting plausible in the first place could be a sign that the Others are made of ice or some other elemental matter, and not derived from flesh (which doesn't melt).

ASOS: The Red Wedding

The July 1999 draft of ASOS doesn't include the Red Wedding itself- George has said it was the last chapter he wrote for Storm- but it does include some deleted foreshadowing that may affect your theories about how it was planned. Here's the original final page of ASOS Tyrion 3, Tyrion's first small council meeting with Tywin:
The interesting thing about this passage is Tywin's reference to Tyrion building his chain back in Clash- this suggests that Tywin was somehow planning Robb's death long before Robb had even met Jeyne Westerling.
This foreshadowing strikes me as problematic on multiple levels- it weakens the shock impact of the Red Wedding itself, it shows Tywin hinting way too casually to others about an incredibly sensitive plot, and requires an implausible level of foresight from Tywin, especially during the chaos of war. So I'm glad this passage was deleted.
A few pages earlier, there's also a modified line that clearly indicates that Kevan was involved in planning the Red Wedding. There's a passage in the published book in which Tywin rejects the possibility of an alliance with the Ironborn in exchange for giving them the North- Tywin enigmatically says, "Granted enough time, a better option may well present itself. One that does not require the king to give up half his kingdom." In the published version, Kevan then conveniently changes the subject, but in the draft Tywin first meaningfully glances at Kevan. I take this as a sign that George always intended for Kevan to have been involved, but like above, wanted to preserve the surprise both for the reader and the other council members.
I generally don't look at final drafts during these library visits, because my time is limited and I assume that they have many fewer interesting divergences than the early drafts. But I made an exception for the Red Wedding. Here's a very late draft of the second to last page of that chapter, with visible copyediting annotations:
As you can see, Catelyn's death was originally even more gruesome- in addition to raking her face with her nails, she tore off her own lips and ears. I agree with the copyeditor that that was too much- the self-mutilation that we ultimately got somehow feels more more dignified and in line with what a crazed Catelyn could do.

ASOS: Other changes

I'll cover the remainder of the vaguely interesting differences in the Storm draft as bullets:
This concludes act 2 of my research into George's ASOIAF drafts- I hope you've enjoyed reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it. I look forward to returning to College Station one final time for act 3 if and when Winds is released, to study the currently closed drafts of ADWD. Thanks as always to the staff of the Cushing Library, who could not have been more helpful during my visit.
If you have any questions about any of any of the drafts I've discussed in this or any previous posts, I'll be happy to answer your questions in the comments below. Like yesterday, my availability to respond to questions most of today will be limited, but I'll check back and respond to as many as I can this evening.~~~~

2024.03.10 01:54 youburyitidigitup Actually finding a job

I read the post earlier about how this sub is a bad place to be when looking for a job. I thought it was right because we only have posts about unemployment, so I want to add a positive experience of finding jobs.
I majored in anthropology because I wanted to be an archaeologist. To do so, you have to attend a Field School. Through your University, you travel somewhere, usually during summer, to work on an ongoing excavation and learn field techniques. However, Field Schools worldwide got cancelled for two summers in a row thanks to COVID. Like many other people in the field sciences, I had to take fewer classes per semester to elongate my undergrad so that I could attend a field school. It is impossible to get hired without one. I figured that I didn’t want to waste time, so I had to gain experience while waiting for lockdown to end. I volunteered at a local museum. They had just gotten a box of archaeological artifacts from a local dig, and they offered to let me catalog them. A few months after that, I applied to an internship at a larger museum. I was accepted because of my volunteering experience. Finally, when lockdown ended, I got to travel to Italy to excavate an Etruscan tomb and a medieval castle, which was one of the best experiences of my life. I came back, went back to my internship, and graduated six months later in December of 2022. My grades weren’t that good. I had a 2.9 GPA. Immediately, I started applying for work. I think I applied to 11 jobs and got one interview. The interviewer actually told me that my field school might not have prepared me for American archaeology, so my museum experience was crucial. Another factor is that, thanks to the field science bottleneck, I was the first generation of new applicant after COVID. She hired me, I moved to a new city, and started my current job. I make $17 an hour with benefits, so not much, but it’s enough to live comfortably. My one year review is coming up, and I expect to get a raise. I’ve been getting back into my hobbies (ice skating and archery). Yesterday I went on a second date with a guy I really like, today I adopted a beautiful calico cat, and overall I just feel really good. Just wanted to change the tone of this sub, and perhaps provide an example of how to get a job.

2024.03.01 01:24 YYCGrizz Help building a bow

I am new to archery and currently shoot a PSE Drive R. Wanting to take the next step, and potentially get into some competition shooting, I purchased a 2002 Darton Tempest E-T with 2 month old GAS strings…doesn’t mean a lot to me but the guy was pretty excited about them
I am now trying to come up with and need advice on all the parts I need to start shooting it. I just purchased a Topoint micro adjustable sight and am waiting for that to come. I want to add a scope, potentially with a magnifier but am having problems finding a lot of info on them and don’t know what to buy…lots of hunting stuff on Google and YouTube but not a lot of competition stuff.
I also need a peep and I think a stabilizer bar although I am hoping to keep the weight of the bow down as much as possible. Is there anything I’m missing, what do you recommend or is there anything I need to know that you wish you did when building your first bow? Thanks in advance for any assistance, I really appreciate it!

2024.02.26 20:36 Deltiasgaming1 Putting together a Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 1 Checklist

Hello BG3 fans! I wanted to post this and get some feedback on a complete checklist for Act 1 in BG3. We've designed this to help players obtain the most useful items, permanent bonuses, and complete important quests.
We could use your help identifying if we missed anything? There is obviously a lot going on in this game and it's too much to catalog every single thing, but I wanted to make sure to list what players really shouldn't miss. I've uploaded the more compressive version of the guide here, but am providing a condensed list here due to reddit character restricts. Thanks in advance!
---------

All Things to Complete in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3

The most important things to do in Act 1 are recruit companions, find quality gear, and unlock permanent bonuses. Furthermore, you should initiate certain story threads/quests that will have significant follow-ups in the later game.
This Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 1 Checklist divides the map into the important named areas/locations, and gives you all the information for all the vital companions, quests, and gear you’ll want to find.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 1 Major Locations List:

Ravaged Beach

Once you recover on the Ravaged Beach, the most important step will be finding your future companions. Be careful, as although some will give you more than one chance to recruit them, you can also fail at this.

Dank Crypt

You can find the ruins just north of the crashed nautiloid, and the most important thing to do here is to find an NPC named Withers.

Quests

Gear

Emerald Grove

The Druid’s Grove plays a pivotal role in the Act 1 story and you'll also have another companion to recruit and important NPCs to meet for the first time.

Companions

The Blade of Frontiers: You may recognize Wyll, as he just assisted with the fight against the goblins at the gate.

Quests

Gear

Forest

The Forest in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 1 Checklist is a small section of the map where you can find a couple of potential animal companions, a very helpful necklace, and also pick up another tadpole.

Quests

Gear

Blighted Village

The Blighted Village has a lot going on, with resident goblins lying in wait to ambush you before you can get a chance to search the Apothecary, Blacksmith Forge, and Whispering Depths found inside.

Quests

Gear

Permanent Bonuses

Whispering Depths

The Whispering Depths in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 1 Checklist is an underground cave area filled with spiders, but you’ll want to come down here for a gear piece and an important item.

Quests

Gear

Permanent Bonuses

Dark Amethyst

The Risen Road

The Risen Road is an area directly north of the Blighted Village, and here you will find another potential companion.

Quests

Gear

Companions

Our Fiery Friend: The Risen Road is where you will find the Tiefling Karlach, the supposed ‘devil’ that Wyll is hunting and whom Anders also sent you to kill.

Waukeen’s Rest

Waukeen’s Rest is found to the west of the Risen Road and you’ll want to initially bring Wyll along for a story quest related directly to his past.

Quests

Gear

Zhentarim Basement

The Zhentarim Hideout is in a surprisingly large cave, and you can find/purchase a variety of good gear if you played your cards right back at the cave along the Risen Road.

Quests

Gear

Mountain Pass

Encounter a group of Githyanki and discover a path to the Creche and Act 2.

Quests

Githyanki

Gear

Silver Sword of the Astral Plane

There are several noxious secrets to uncover in this seemingly beautiful, sunny area to the south of the Act 1 map.

Survival Instinct

Selunite Outpost

While you won’t find any NPCs, traders, or quests here you’ll still want to swing by and grab several very good gear items.

Gear

Arcane Tower

The Arcane Tower is located in the southwestern corner of the Underdark map, and this mysterious place holds a lot of secrets and also some great loot.

Quest

Investigate the Parasite

Gear

Grymforge

Grymforge is an essential area all players should visit because of all the additional NPCs, quests, and powerful new gear you can find.

Quests

Crafting Items

Gear

Adamantine Forge

At the Adamantine Forge you’ll be able to craft armouweapons, but only after finding all the pieces and defeating the giant Grym construct guarding the ancient forge.

Quest

The Adamantine Forge

Crafting Items

Gear

Rosymorn Monastery Trail

Although the Trail is technically still a part of Act 1 and you should be able to return to other previous waypoints if you need to, spending Long Rests while in this area could conclude the Goblin Camp/Druid conflict without you if you haven’t already finished it.

Quests

Gear

Crèche Y’llek

Crèche Y’llek may seem very out of the way, but has a ton of story significance, great gear and weapons to find, and a major bonus to unlock.

Quest

Gear

Permanent Bonuses

Awakened

-----
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading through! Did you see anything important you believe I left out? Again, this guide isn't meant to catalog every little thing, but all of the most important quests, gear, companions and bonuses that you don't want to miss in Act 1.

Is the Bear Vast RTH a good StarterBow?
Looking for a starter bow. I’ve looked into several Bear’s such as the Legit, Cruzer. Seen the Vast had a RTH package including the arrows and release. Would this be a good bow to get me going.

2024.02.03 06:45 tommykneecapz Darton Derailing

My buddy is new to archery and was shooting a maverick xt for about 3 months with nothing but good times. He upgraded to a Darton Prelude 32 a month ago and the bow has derailed 4 times now. He has gotten a few hundred arrows between two derailments and the recent happened much quicker with a different release. He bought it used and it was manufactured less than a year ago I think. The D loop has torn or come undone everytime.
He has been working with the archery shop and even paid for a lesson to have someone watch him shoot for an hour to see if there is something going on with his form. They didn't notice anything with his form or any issues with his bow. Their most recent diagnoses was his release might be cutting the D loop but it happened again today with a new release and a healthy D loop.
Anybody got some good insight on the cause? Should he reach out to Darton, even though its used?

2024.02.01 09:05 FireWitch95 Bird & Bow #1 - Highly Strung

Bird & Bow #1 - Highly Sting
Black Canary's Beginning: Green Arrow’s Beginning
[<<](Welcome to the beginning) >
Book: Bird & Bow
Set: 93
Arc: Changed for Good

-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<---

For the first time in a long time, Oliver Queen sat at his mother's bedside.

But unlike the last time he was here, when he sat in silence, today, he spoke.

"What am I meant to do?" Ollie asked in the silent room, pacing. "I was a better man when I was with her and it burns me up inside -" He thumped on his chest with a closed fist, emotion brimming just below the surface "- because I love - loved - her so much and she doesn't even spare me a glance."

Oliver Queen turned, his eyes pleading with his mother's still form. "What am I meant to do without her? How can I go on knowing what type of man I could be if I had her by my side?"

Even now, a month after Barry Allen and the Flashes had returned the world to its 'natural' state, Ollie could still feel the absolutely soul consuming love he had for Dinah Lance. And it was tearing him apart day by day.

Sighing deeply, Ollie ran a hand through his hair, musing it. He knew what his mother would say - "if you were a better man with her, then become the man she made you."

Ollie flipped open his phone. The conversation with Dinah popping open immediately.

I want to be a part of the Justice League.

Small steps, Ollie thought, but each one paved the way back to that world, back to that future where he was with Dinah, back to the world where he could be a better man.

-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<---

Dinah shifted on her feet, feeling Ollie shift behind her, matching and mirroring her movements almost perfectly in sync.

Eyes swept from the table in front of her, registering surprise at seeing her, and then confusion and caution as they beheld Green Arrow behind her.

She definitely should have told them he was coming.

Dinah stepped to the side, sweeping a hand out in introduction. "Green Arrow this is the Justice League, League this is Arrow."

Several slow nods from the core team had Dinah's panic lowering. Superman stood offering a quick hello, his tall, slightly bulky frame called attention back to the issue at hand.

She watched the alien for another moment, surveying the way he made eye contact with those he considered friends, a hesitant smile seemed to reach across the table to welcome both Dinah and Ollie into the fold.

"Thanks everyone for coming on such short notice. As you all might know, a lot of people have been reporting duel memories - similar to the Dome incident at a much larger scale." Superman cast a quick look at the Flash, the two conversing with their eyes the way people who have worked together for years do.

Superman went on to explain what everyone was calling ‘The Metalhead Effect.’ Where some people, like Dinah, remembered the last two months as they were supposed to happen. She remembered having dinner with her dad, catching a few low life criminals. Nothing all that interesting. Others, like Ollie, remembered the world as it had been when the Flashes went back and changed everything. Most folk remembered some combination of the two.

Ollie still hadn't told her what he remembered. But she saw the way he looked at her sometimes when he thought she wasn't paying attention. The intensity of the emotion that lay beneath his green eyes in those moments made her shiver. Made her wish she could remember.

As the big boy in blue finished his explanation, Flash stood silently. He was as skinny as a twig and looked breakable from first glance. But Dinah observed the shifting muscles underneath the tight red ensemble and knew that the man was a fighter.

Dinah tilted her head slightly, wondering just for a moment if the Flash family had been selfish doing what they did. But looking at him now, Dinah knew that whatever the reason, it was because it was the only choice the family could have made.

"Does anyone have any questions?"

Ollie stepped out from behind her, a looming shadow that made everyone turn his way.

"Two, if you don't mind." Ollie's voice had returned to its rough edge and Flash nodded, tensing. "First, is it possible to have everyone share in both memories? As in, can those who don't remember the normal months be made to remember and vice versa?"

Dinah tried not to let any emotion cross her features, but she wasn't sure how convincing she was being.

"No. I'm sorry, I really am." The Flash's eyes darted between her and Ollie. He knew then, whatever had happened in those other months, Flash knew all about it. "Memory doesn't really work that way. Even trying something like that could overload the memory and kill someone."
Martian Manhunter nodded. “It is not like these people simply forgot those two months. They do not have any memories to restore.”

She could feel Ollie's jaw working and his eyes on the back of her head for a moment.

"Second question then. Could you make people with memories of the broken timeline forget those two months?" Something in his voice squeezed her heart and made Flash avert his eyes.

"I'm sorry Arrow." Was all the other superhero had to say.

The room held its breath - or maybe it was just her - for several long moments before Ollie nodded, stepping back into the shadows by her side.

Safe to say Dinah didn't pay a lick of attention to the rest of the meeting.

-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<---

Sweat beaded down her brow and she could feel her heart racing underneath the slightly armored leotard that covered her internal organs.

Ollie watched her every move, calculating and cataloging. They had gone three rounds in the sparring room of the Watchtower already, and a small crowd had been steadily growing until almost the whole League was watching them beat the shit out of each other.

They were perfectly evenly matched, except for the fact that she wanted it more. Had extracted a promise from him after the meeting ended - if she won, he'd tell her everything.

The first round was meant to have been a warm up, a way for them to stretch out the sore muscles. That idea had lasted the first minute before they had both found that rather serious look they got before a fight.

They had gone to time in each round since, no one had been able to call a winner between them.

The soft ding of the timer starting was the only sound that Dinah heard as she clenched her fists. Her knuckles were red and raw, and she had split her lip in round two by not avoiding one of Ollie's punches.

She had done it on purpose, to see whether or not he would pull back when he realized she wasn't dodging.

He didn't. It was clear that whatever had occurred in the past two months, he really didn't want to tell her.

It made her want to know even more.

Ollie offered her a snarky smile. His own lip was split and a bruise was beginning to form on his cheek.

Dinah lunged to the left, swinging her leg up to kick Ollie in his ribs. She watched as Ollie's body moved to block it before switching legs at the last second, his eyes widening as her foot connected with his side.

Ollie rasped and Dinah tried not to cringe. She hated having to hurt him just to get him to tell her the truth.

But Ollie knew that about her, just as he knew how her body moved and responded in a way that not even the Prey Birds had been able to do.

A moment of deep breathing is all he took before Ollie launched himself at her, his fists flying with speed that made it near impossible to block.

Dinah knew she had made a mistake concentrating on his fists when he flashed her his most charming smile, right before his foot connected with the back of her ankles, sending her towards the floor. She had enough semblance of self to wrap her own legs along the back of his toned calves. Surprise, making his eyes pop open for a moment before they both hit the floor with an oomph.

Breathing hard, Ollie searched her eyes. A surprising amount of softness and care as he surveyed her injuries.

“What happened, Arrow?” Even with the sparring, with how close they were right now, she still wouldn't use his name. She would keep his secret just as she trusted him to keep hers.

He stared at her for another moment, then shaking his head, Oliver Queen leant down and kissed her.

Searing heat and the coppery tang of blood surged through her, and there was a fierceness, a sense of release in the kiss that made her realize he had been waiting to do that for a long time.

Several moments lost in his kiss before he leaned back, a jubilant woop echoing through the space as Booster Gold fist-pumped the air.
Ollie closed his eyes as a defense against whatever he thought she might be thinking. “That. That's what happened.”

-~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<---

Oliver Queen was certain that he was an imbecile and a fool to boot. Two days had passed since that moment in the Watchtower.

He had been added to the league chat for those on the extended team, and had put forth an offer to begin teaching archery lessons to those who might want to improve some of their lesser honed skills. He was still waiting for a response, but he had said he would go there on Wednesdays, and Wednesday it was.

He sat on the hard concrete floor, stretching out his tight calves, his mind running wild. The sparring mat was just on the other side of the room. Someone had cleaned up the blood spatters after he and Dinah went to town on one another. His lip still hadn't healed properly from the kick to the face he was certain he deserved.

Despite everything, Ollie had managed to be productive in the last few days, spending the time checking up on the cultists from his memory of the last two months. They lived, and the confirmation that just because he had killed them in one version of events didn't mean they died was an immeasurable weight off his shoulders.

They were a quiet, subdued bunch, and despite the constant surveillance, Ollie wasn’t able to tell if they were up to something or not. Some of the people he remembered were God-fearing church attending people which seemed on point with the whole ‘cultist’ thing, while others still were hardened criminals standing on street corners as bodyguards for drug dealers and the like.

Something in his bones still screamed that these people were wrong, that there was some weird shit going on beneath it all that he just couldn't quite see. He knew he would have to ask Dinah for help if things didn't become clear soon.

Shrugging his sore shoulders, Arrow stood. The material of his suit shifted as his muscles rippled until the fabric was once again taut against his skin. He surveyed the collection of bows, from compact to recurve to long, the Watchtower had a fairly reasonable assortment of weaponry.

He wondered briefly who funded the collection of these weapons, or if each piece had been a collection from some villain or another.

Ollie carefully tugged the longbow from its mount, the feel of the sanded wood felt good. It had been years since he’d handled a long bow. He could get the same type of impact from a compact hunting bow, which was his usual fare these days. He stared at the large target, the bullseye a small pinprick in the distance.

Planting his collection of arrows at his feet, Ollie quickly drew one of the white goose feather arrows. His breathing slowed as his gaze zeroed in on the target. Time slowed to milliseconds as his chest began to rise, his fingers close to brushing the underside of his mask. With an exhale that had been practiced and perfected years ago, Ollie released the arrow.

A second later, a satisfying thunk reverberated through the space, and he narrowed his eyes at the target, trying to tell if he had been dead on or if his aim was off.

Slow clapping roused him from his momentary brood and Ollie turned, his eyebrows already furrowing in annoyance before he saw who it was.

Dinah stood leaning against the wall, a small smile on her lips as she held up a recurve bow.

“I heard you were offering lessons?” She sounded so unsure, but just the sight of her standing there was enough for Ollie.

He nodded, not trusting his voice to come out as gruff as Green Arrow was supposed to be, and indicated with his head for her to come stand at the shooting line.

Ollie cleared his throat. “Let's get started.”

2024.01.17 17:23 craigfrost_ How to make a Scoring System for a dart board?

What would be the best way to design a scoring system for detecting where a dart hits a dart board? Dartboard Reference
For a standard archery target with 10 in the middle, 9 next ring, then 8 etc. I would measure the distance from the centre of the target and set some thresholds for each point score. However a dart board has numbers all over the board and areas for doubles and triples etc.
No idea the best way to attack this problem. Any help much appreciated.

2023.12.07 16:18 Holiday-Driver-9439 The Arcane Spellbow

Hi! Rob again here with another build.
Are you looking to play an archer that fires arrows and slings spells in the same breath? Or perhaps you're looking to recreate your favorite archers from other video games like Leliana from Dragon Age or Reimi from Star Ocean 4? if yes, this is the right place! Here's the inspiration for the build:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xF5nd5abxV8
And in case, this isnt interesting to you, there are the other builds i've posted so far that you can check out in the build catalog at the end of the post!

#Now that we got that out of the way, what does this build do? This build functions as a strikeblaster hybrid. The gameplay is simple; fire a bunch of arrows and finish off with a cloud of daggers or magic missile. When in melee, shield up, then run away. lather, rinse, repeat. This build is actually the ranged version of the old melee gish that was requested to be it's own standalone build. without further ado:

#SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS:
this is a NO ITEMS (outside of common ones like water bottles, non-magic weaponry/armor and ammunition and simple toxins) build. even if consumables are indicated , the build functions without them/has an alternative so that the build can cater to those doing no consumable runs.
the objective here is to make the class features and spells shine. ideally, the discussion generated should be about those instead of talking about gear. i dont want this to be an item list and i'd like to limit spoilers as much as possible. i understand some people dont want to play BG3 like diablo 4.
  1. this is a no illithid powers build. This is also an attempt from me to keep the builds as general as possible to cater to the 5E purists or to those who don't want to have their runthrough with a build be dictated by having to get illithid powers. i will assume you get the hag hair early on though.
  2. for sustainability, all builds are expected to last 3 combats performing their core tactics without long resting (with 2 short rests in between being fine). this means i will usually ignore level 6 spells in these builds as they typically are once a day abilities except if they're a summon like create undead. i also like builds functioning as intended early-mid game instead of end game.
  3. builds are designed with solo tactician play in mind as well as that's how i've done all of my runthroughs. of course, most of the builds in general would translate well enough to party play.
  4. of course, you are free to ask me or others in the comments, how i would do things differently (action sequences, build, etc) if i factored in a certain item like a haste potion, bloodlust elixir, etc. or how i'd run the build in the earlier levels (1-4) or in the mid-game (5-8).

2023.10.30 22:38 PrestonHM I'd like to get into archery for a casual hobby, just target shooting. I believe these are compatible, correct me if I'm wrong. Can this riser take a recurve sight? Also, regarding the limbs, I saw that the long ones were 70", does that means the individual limbs would be about 30"? Thanks
