2024.05.14 23:25 Intelligent-Cat-2593 Can I just skip the final exam?

I currently can’t take my Spanish exam due to my senior exam schedule filled up with other exams, that has the same date and time as my Spanish exam. And they only provide us 2 days for the senior exam so they can grade things early. If I don’t take it, it will only bring my grade down to an C (have an A in the class) which I don’t really care much for, but if I skip this exam will it counts as fail the class? Or just fail the exam but you still get credit for the class as an F on the final only brings you down to a C?
Don’t have other choices since the teacher in any of my classes won’t allow me to take it any other time or date (has to be 8:30 in the morning on the 16 or 17th for my math and spanish classes). So I’m just thinking to skip this exam since I have a 100% and a F will only brings my overall grade down to C, which is a passing grade.
I just needed to make sure since I need the language credit for college.
(in hillsborough county btw)

2024.05.14 23:12 Class_of_22 So for those of you here who have seen Eminem live, where & when did you first see him live, & at what venue was it at? Have you gone back to see him multiple times since then?

So I was born on March 10th, 1999, so I wasn’t around when the first 2 albums came out. The Marshall Mathers LP came out when I was 14 months old, and the Eminem Show came out when I was 3. Encore came out when I was 5, Relapse came out when I was 10, and Recovery came out when I was 11. The Marshall Mathers LP 2 came out when I was 14, and Revival came out when I was 18. Kamikaze came out when I was 19, and Music to Be Murdered By came out when I was 20.
So I was raised and live around the NYC Metro/Westchester County area of New York, and I wasn’t around for the first 8 times that he played in this area and in my state. I was too young to go to a lot of the shows that he had done pre-2013, and post 2013 when I was finally old enough to see him, it fell on either a school night or it was a long drive away from me or I was too broke.
Been a fan of Eminem’s since high school, and god I want to see him live someday.

2024.05.14 23:11 onnake Judge refuses to dismiss all claims by transgender child against Tenneesse state, Williamson County Schools

Judge refuses to dismiss all claims by transgender child against Tenneesse state, Williamson County Schools
“A challenge of Tennessee’s law dealing with the use of public school restrooms and locker rooms by transgender students remains alive after a federal judge declined to dismiss all claims against the state education department and Williamson County Schools.
“U.S. District Court Judge William Campbell denied the state’s request. . .to dismiss the child’s claim of a violation of rights under the Equal Protection Clause.
“The judge, however, granted a request to dismiss the child’s claim that her Title IX rights were violated. The ruling notes that because the federal law allows schools to maintain separate restrooms for ‘the different sexes,’ requiring the child to use the restroom based on her biological sex doesn’t violate Title IX.
“The judge also dismissed the child’s request to correct all records to reflect her female gender.”
"The case against the Tennessee Department of Education and Williamson County Schools involves a 9-year-old transgender child who was male at birth but identifies as female, according to court filings. The child uses 'she/her' pronouns and lives socially as a girl by wearing her hair long and dressing in a manner usually associated with girls."
“Campbell denied the child’s request for an injunction against the school district to stop it from enforcing the state law.
“Yet the judge opted not to dismiss the child’s claims under the Equal Protection Clause, which prohibits a state from ‘denying to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws’ and prevents government discrimination that ‘either burdens a fundamental right, targets a suspect class or intentionally treats one differently than others similarly situated without any rational basis for the difference.’”

2024.05.14 23:00 discordanthaze professional bias against Medicaid recipients (patients / students) and public transport users?

I live in a big city whereas my school is in the suburbs, and it's about 2 hours on public transit to school. When I take public transit, I get to study, do flash cards on my phone, and watch lectures on the train - I even analyze data on my laptop. Medicaid in my home city is a lot better for us (especially for queer people) compared to the surrounding counties - for one, there's just less queerphobia.
At a recent professional organization networking event between attendings, residents and medical students, the topic of location / where we grew up / what types of research opportunities (hospital systems) we have experience with, I just noticed that some faculty often moved on from a conversation about possible opportunities working with them whenever I said I took the train/bus to school (and study on the train/bus) versus driving and being stuck in traffic.
"Can't you move closer?" I would get asked.
I'd try to address this concern quickly by stating that if I moved across county lines, I would lose access to my specialized Medicaid plan, which would be losing a lot for me. I've been used to commuting long distances to work and school for almost a decade, and keeping a car would be too expensive in the city. However, this doesn't seem to alleviate their concerns. I don't understand why my SES and mode of transportation should affect professional networking so much - maybe my more affluent peers could explain this? Should I try to actively hide my SES more?

2024.05.14 22:37 No_Plankton_7188 suing logan county sheriff

i work 2 weeks of 12 hour shifts and got home Saturday at 2 am, spent another hour or two relaxing before bed. at 11 am i woke up to three pounds on the door and before i could get out of bed and down stairs my door was kicked off its frame and my 17 year old brother was hit with the door when he was going to open it and on the ground with a taser pointed at him. i was half asleep and was getting screamed at to get on the ground and my mother was ripped out of her bed while the dog got loose and ran outside. all this for my roommate who had the warrant for a firearm discharge in Napoleon while i'm in steele. the reason i'm suing is the warrant was for him alone yet my brother WHO IS A MINOR was thrown to the ground after trying to open the door and got hit with it and the both of us were placed in cuffs. the warrant did not give them the ability to use forced entry, they refused to talk to us until the logan county cleared the house and even when the firearm and person was in custody they were still going through everything in the house. they asked why my brother wasn't in school when i yelled at them It's sunday, and i later found out they were searching for drugs while inside without a probable cause. My roommate was released outside while my brother and i were still in cuffs for being in my goddamn house and i was told since its logan counties raid he had to give the go to take them off. My formal roommate got an apology for "jumping the gun" while my mother, brother and i the homeowner got nothing. i don't want the money, i want to hurt their pride. i want a public apology to myself and family for the piss poor performance and now the rumor mill next door spinning stories of it being a drug raid. anyone got a lawyer they'd suggest, the only money coming out of it would be legal fees.

2024.05.14 22:33 bored-blonde Trading Schools

I’m just wrapping up my second year teaching. I just got notice of what position I’m going to be in next year and it’s concerned me greatly. I reached out to my AP and her response only further concerned me.
The support at this school has been terrible as well, so I’m highly considering trying again at a new school next year. The position they want to put me in would require support and I don’t know if I’ll get it. One of the top rated schools in my county is hiring for my position, so I’m thinking of applying there.
I was isolated my entire first year teaching, so I jumped to the school I’m currently at. This year has been far superior, but it’s still lacking since their discipline department is terrible.
Would it look weird if I have 3 schools in 3 years on my resume? Or should I stick it out at my current school to see how terrible my new position will be?

2024.05.14 22:11 Class_of_22 Has anybody here seen Lilly live, and if so, when and at what venue? Have you gone back to see her multiple times since then?

I was born in 1999, so I am nearly 15 years younger than Lilly, and I also was born and raised in the States, specifically in Westchester County, New York as well as in and around the NYC Metro Area.
So, I was only 7 years old when Alright, Still came out, and It’s Not Me It’s You came out when I was 9. Sheezus came out when I was 15, and when No Shame came out I was 19. She hasn’t released any other albums since then, though I believe she said that she still is writing songs, so there’s hope!
Thing was, Lilly I don’t think was as big of an artist when she first hit the scene here in the States, so I don’t think I paid as much attention to her as I could have, despite me being a big music fan for as long as I can remember.
So, the first time she came near me was when she did a concert at the Hiro Ballroom at the Maritime Hotel in NYC on October 10th, 2006, with Mark Ronson as her supporting act, and it was probably during her touring period for Alright, Still. I was only 7 years old at the time of that concert, so I was too young to go, plus it was during a school night anyway. Then the next time she played near me was when she did a concert at Webster Hall in NYC on February 10th, 2007, again probably during the same tour. I was 7 years old at the time of that concert, so again, too young to go, though it wasn’t during a school night. Then the next time she played near me was when she did a concert at the Irving Plaza in NYC on April 11th, 2007, again touring Alright, Still. At the time of that concert, I was 8 years old, so again, still too young to go, and it was yet again during a school night. She then came back to do a concert at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on May 30th, 2007 (again touring Alright Still), but again, I was just 8 years old at the time of that show, so again I was too young to go and it was again during a school night. She then returned to the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on June 12th, 2007, and gave a concert there during the Alright, Still tour. So again I was 8 years old at the time of that show, so I was again too young to go, and I believe it was during a school night. She then returned to NYC and gave a concert at the Warsaw in Brooklyn on June 17th, 2007 (again touring for Alright Still), supported by Aaron LaCrate and Kevin Michael. At the time of that show, I was (surprise, surprise!) 8 years old, so again I was too young to go, though it was not during a school night. She then didn’t come back to NYC for 2 years, and then after 2 years, she gave a concert at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC on February 10th, 2009, during her It’s Not Me It’s You tour, and she was supported by Matt and Kim and Trouble Andrew. At the time of that show, I was 9 years old, so I was still too young at the time to go, and again, it was during a school night. She then came back to NYC during that same tour and gave a concert at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC on April 20th, 2009, supported by a band called Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head. At the time of that show I was 10 years old, so I was getting there in terms of maturity for concerts, but still too young to go and again, it was during a school night. She then didn’t play near me for the next 5 years, but she returned to New York for her Bangerz tour (supporting her Sheezus album) and played a show at the Highline Ballroom in NYC on May 15th, 2014. The next day after that, she did a show at the Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center in NYC on May 16th, 2014, and then she did a show at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale in Nassau County on August 1st, 2014, where she supported Miley Cyrus, Icona Pop and Sky Ferreira. She then returned and did two shows during the Bangerz tour at Terminal 5 in NYC on September 23rd-24th, 2014, where she was supported by Lolawolf. At the time of these shows, I was 15 years old, so I was finally old enough to go, but three of those dates fell on a school night, another fell on a family member’s birthday party and the Nassau one was a LONG drive away and I was away at sleepaway camp in the Catskills. Then, she didn’t play in the US for 4 more years, and during that time, I graduated from high school & went to college/uni at McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, from late August 2017 to late May 2022. The next time she came to the states and played a show near my hometown and near my college was during the No Shame tour when she did a show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on April 23rd, 2018, and then during that same tour she did a show at Terminal 5 in NYC on October 20th, 2018, then she did come near me the next day when she did a show at the Fillmore Silver Spring in Silver Spring, Maryland on October 21st, 2018. At the time of those shows, I was 19 years old, so again I was old enough to go, but I was broke and two of those dates were a long drive away from me (and I didn’t drive either) and I had a lot of homework to do, and one of those dates fell on a day when I had classes, so I couldn’t go. Then the next time to see her happened when she did two dates on June 2nd and 3rd, 2019 at Governor’s Ball in Randall’s Island, where she followed The Strokes, Nas, Charli XCX and SZA. At the time of these shows, I was 20 years old and I had come back home for summer vacation, so I could have gone, but there were family events happening at the same time, so I couldn’t go. She has not played another show near me since then in the past 4 years.

2024.05.14 22:03 GtrPlayingMan-254 Uber should filter out rides to areas we are blocked from doing pickups in due to TNC and other regulations!

Maybe a hot take, but just hear me out.
Example: I live and work in Fairfield County to New Haven, CT. I am constantly getting requests to New Jersey, NYC (boros and Manhattan) and Massachusetts. They know I'm blocked from picking up there because I don't have T&LC plates, and I don't want T&LC plates because I'm going back to school and moving on in my career.
They even send delivery reservations in Long Island, WTF?! Do they think anyone is going to get on the ferry round trip for $8?!
Uber knows how to block me from logging on to accept rides 10 feet from the state line (you know I checked, LOL). They also know how to filter out rides going the other direction when I request directional rides, mostly.
So why can't they filter out these rides for drivers without T&LC plates, Massachusetts hack licenses, etc? I'm sure these career drivers would love these rides, and I don't have to see my acceptance rate suffer because I don't want to go to Rhode Island. (I'm in ASU on the scholarship benefit and can't jeopardize that.) And for those who disagree, they should make it a selectable option like we can select to filter out deliveries or pet rides and such.
That's my issue. Do you live in a similar zone like that? (I can't imagine how people on the nation's border deal. Or do you carry your passport in your car?)

2024.05.14 21:46 djjohngold 12 Offers To Sell More Music Merch To Your Fans

Hey everyone, it's John from Hypeddit! I run one of the largest music promotion platforms in the world, and I've helped tens of thousands of music artists reach millions of listeners, fans, and streams. Today, I want to share how you can make more money from Merch Sales every month of the year!
Why Merch Sales Matter:
Streaming royalties are great, but they only bring in fractions of pennies per stream. On the other hand, merch sales can bring in $10, $15, or $20 from a single purchase, which can significantly fund your music promotion efforts.
Recent Video Breakdown:
I recently posted a video where I break down my entire merch sales strategy, including how much money I'm making and how I'm making it. If this interests you, feel free to check it out. In this post, I want to give you a merch sales calendar to help you make more money from merch sales every month.
Using MailChimp for Easy Offers:
One simple way to boost your merch sales is through email offers. For example, during Black Friday, I offer a 50% discount on all t-shirts for house music fans. The key elements of a successful email offer include:
✅A clear, descriptive subject line (e.g., "50% off on all house music t-shirts").
✅A substantial discount (50% off is more enticing than 5% or 20%).
✅A reason for the discount (e.g., in honor of Black Friday).
✅Creating a Merch Sales Calendar
Here's a calendar to help you plan your sales throughout the year:
✅January: New Year Sale
✅February: Valentine's Day Sale
✅March: St. Patrick's Day Sale
✅April: Easter Sale
✅May: Memorial Day Sale / Mother's Day Sale / Spring Sale
✅June: Summer Kickoff Sale
✅July: Independence Day Sale (Fourth of July)
✅August: Summer Sale / Back to School Sale
✅September: Labor Day Sale
✅October: Halloween Sale
✅November: Black Friday / Cyber Monday Sale
✅December: Holiday Sale / Christmas Sale
Bonus Tip: Birthday Month Sale:
Offer a sale during your birthday month. Fans will feel a personal connection and are more likely to take advantage of the discount. Many will even reply to wish you a happy birthday, increasing engagement.
Make sure your merchandise is priced so that even at discounted rates, you are still profitable. I use Printful for print-on-demand services, which means no inventory hassle. Price your items to cover costs and ensure a profit margin.
Frequent sales can train fans to wait for the next discount, so price your merchandise to ensure profitability year-round. If you want to learn more, check out my mini training on merch sales and watch my latest video for detailed insights.

2024.05.14 21:13 como365 Four important numbers in Missouri's FY 2025 budget

JEFFERSON CITY — The Missouri General Assembly met its constitutional mandate to pass a state budget Friday, sending to Gov. Mike Parson a $51.7 billion package that funds essential services like the state’s health care and public education system.
The final number is about $1 billion under what the governor proposed at the beginning of the year. He has the power to eliminate specific spending items.
Here are four key numbers you should know about the Fiscal Year 2025 state budget.
— $6,760 —
The state adequacy target is the baseline per pupil funding provided to school districts by the state. It was unchanged for four years until this year, when it was bumped to $6,760 from $6,375. The funding has failed to keep pace with inflation over the last 17 years. In 2007, the target established by the legislature was $9,575 per pupil after adjusting for inflation.
A major education bill raising minimum teacher pay to $40,000 a year and expanding charter schools to Boone County, among other provisions, passed this session. It comes with a hefty $468 million fiscal note once fully implemented and will cost around $200 million a year for the next few years.
House budget chair Rep. Cody Smith, R-Carthage, said that the steep increase in education spending required going forward wasn’t factored in while composing the FY 2025 budget. None of the mandates in the bill are connected to a funding source, meaning if the state can’t afford them, it would be on local governments to do so.
It’s unclear the likelihood of that possibility. At the beginning of the year the state projected a 0.5% decrease in general revenue over the rest of this fiscal year and the next one. Yet, up to date revenue receipts have shown a different picture. As of April, general revenue collections are up 2.7% year over year.
— 6 —
Six departments requested funds for programs or practices that involved diversity, equity and inclusion in some way. Republicans have targeted DEI in the appropriations process for years. Last year, the House defunded DEI in its version of the budget, but the Senate approved it, keeping it in the budget.
Sen. Denny Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, who introduced the DEI amendment last year, again proposed an amendment to ban state spending on DEI several times while the budget bills were on the Senate floor. It failed by bipartisan votes each time.
Blocking funding to DEI isn’t the first time Republicans have attempted to legislate through the budget bills. The 2022 budget included a provision preventing any Medicaid reimbursements going to Planned Parenthood because it has affiliates in other states that provide abortions. That provision was later struck down by the Missouri Supreme Court.
Even as DEI was protected in the budget, a provision was added by Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer, R-Parkville, to prevent any money from going to a city that has a sanctuary city policy that protects the identity of immigrants.
After failing to block state funds for Planned Parenthood and DEI in the budget process, Republicans have turned to changing statute. The governor already signed a bill passed this session to ban Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid reimbursements. A bill banning funds spent on DEI programs in state agencies got initial House approval last week.
Only six agencies have offices relating to diversity, equity and inclusion. Planned Parenthood is unable to provide abortions in Missouri because of the state ban on abortions. No city in the state has a sanctuary city policy.
— 0 —
No public comment was taken throughout the four-month budget process. In an effort to have the budget completed earlier, the process began sooner. Instead, the budget was completed three hours before the constitutional deadline, and the public wasn’t privy to the process’s inner workings.
Smith unveiled his budget plan mid-March, two months before the bills were constitutionally mandated to be passed. In a 30-minute hearing he laid out a $49 billion spending plan and gave committee members a few days to review the whole package and come up with amendments.
About a month later, the Senate held a hearing unveiling its own package without receiving public comment. Its version of the budget bills was unveiled less than two weeks before the budget due date.
A 41-hour filibuster by the Freedom Caucus on the federal reimbursement allowance, a bill that funds a large portion of the state’s healthcare system, further cramped the timeline.
With the clock ticking, Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Sen. Lincoln Hough, R-Springfield, and Smith decided to finalize the budget process themselves instead of in a public conference committee.
The new bills created by the budget chairs were brought before the Senate and House with no time for prior review by elected officials or the public.
Republicans and Democrats alike criticized the budget. Gov. Mike Parson said his office wasn’t privy to any of the budget discussions and called the process “problematic.” He also said that he didn’t want a large supplemental — when the legislature has to appropriate funds to departments to continue day-to-day operations.
Rep. Peter Meredith, D-St. Louis, who has served on the budget committee for eight years, said it was the least transparent process he’s ever seen.
— $558 million —
UM system got about $558 million in this year’s budget: $509 million of that is baseline funding for the system, with about $50 million appropriated for various university projects. The overall appropriation is a 3% increase from last year.
$10 million was put forward to complete a $25 million meat laboratory on MU’s campus. $6 million was appropriated for a workforce incentive grant at MU. Around $5 million was given to the State Historical Society. That’s about $2 million more than last year. Hough is proud of the budget despite the transparency concerns.
“It’s been an odd year, but it’s been a good year and I think the end product is something we can be proud of,” Hough said after the bills passed the Senate.

2024.05.14 21:03 AbraxasNowhere Preschool Programs in East Wake County

Hey all. My wife and I are looking for preschool options in eastern Wake County for our 15-month-old son. We are located in Zebulon and looked at a highly recommended program by Zebulon United Methodist church, but since they follow the Wake County School System, the program doesn't begin until September. The issue with this is that would put him squarely in the spike in separation anxiety toddlers tend to experience at 18 months. Anyone have recommendations? We're looking for educational programs specifically, not just daycares. Thanks!

2024.05.14 20:50 InsolventTortoise WWYD

I'm deciding between these two schools. I got 60k total in scholarships from BU. I believe this puts my projected debt at ~250k. I got a full ride and the eminent scholar award (basically, a named scholarship that also comes with 5k in each of 2L and 3L if one establishes Ohio residency in 1L) from OSU. I believe this puts my projected debt (since I still have to take out loans for cost of living) at ~70k.
I have some interest in big law. And if I were to try to go into big law, I would be perfectly happy to do so in Boston. (I am also from New England and have lived in the Boston area for ~10 years. I hasten to add, though, that I don't have any legal connections despite having lived in the area of BU for some time. And on top of that, I have some desire to turn a new leaf with law school, and moving to another part of the country (e.g., to Columbus) might facilitate that.) BU has much better big law placement numbers than does OSU, and it and BC have solid Boston big law placement numbers in particular. I believe ~40% of graduates of recent BU Law graduating classes have gone directly to firms of 501+ attorneys (and ~60% of graduates who went directly to law firms did so), while only ~14% of graduates of recent OSU Law graduating classes have gone directly to firms of 501+ attorneys (and ~25% of graduates who went directly to law firms did so).
Two caveats about that. I know "501+ attorneys" is not equivalent to "big law." And I know most, if not all, law firms based in Ohio probably do not pay market, unlike many law firms based in Boston. And if I were to go to OSU, I would probably want to stay in Ohio.
In addition to the foregoing, I also have some interest in being a prosecutor, either at the state or federal level. And it's here where OSU's much smaller price tag appeals to me. For I don't need big law to be an ADA in Franklin County Ohio, for instance. Now, if I wanted to be a federal prosecutor, say an AUSA, it may help for me to have a few years of big law experience. Such experience might make me more competitive for such positions, and that militates in favor of BU again. But perhaps it would be feasible for me to get an AUSA position at some point in my career coming from OSU. And again, I would also be happy, I think, with just an ADA position.
Finally, my longterm goal is to be a judge, either a state or federal judge. I think being a state or federal prosecutor would help considerably with that, and certainly more so than being an associate in a transactional practice group in a large law firm for, like, 3-7 years or whatever. If that's my longterm goal, regardless whether I go to BU or OSU, maybe OSU makes more sense. But on the other hand, if I don't ultimately get a judgeship, maybe I'd be happier with the "plan B" careers that a BU Law degree can get one.
Given all of this, WWYD?

2024.05.14 20:47 larrykestenbaum I'm running for re-election as county clerk this year

I'm Lawrence (Larry) Kestenbaum, Washtenaw County Clerk and Register of Deeds. I'm a candidate for re-election this year. I have one opponent in the August 6th primary; there are also two candidates competing for the Republican nomination.
(I have been active on Reddit for years, mainly under my personal account -- u/old-guy-with-data )
The county clerk is the county's chief election official, records all births, deaths, and marriages, among other things. The register of deeds (a separate position in most Michigan counties) records all the land records for the county.
I was first elected in 2004, defeating my Republican predecessor. Washtenaw used to be a Republican county; I'm the first Democratic county clerk in seven decades. I was re-elected in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.
I have accomplished many things in my time as clerk. The office is now more efficient and more transparent than ever before. We meet the growing service needs of this county with half as many employees as I had when I started.
My commitment is that every person who comes to our office be treated with courtesy and respect. Even, or especially, those who are rude, or angry, or agitated, or confused.
In March 2014, when a federal judge struck down Michigan's anti-gay-marriage amendment, for what turned out to be 24 hours, I opened the office on a Saturday to process marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Three other county clerks followed my lead, hundreds of couples were married, and the whole country got a glimpse of what marriage equality would mean to our citizens.
Before I was clerk, I was one of the pioneers of the World Wide Web. In 1996, I created the Political Graveyard web site, which made a lot of U.S. political history available online.
And, as clerk/register, I have vastly expanded online access to county records.
When I took office, all of the county's deeds and land records, on paper in bound volumes, dating back to 1824, were stored in the basement, in downtown Ann Arbor, which is at risk for a catastrophic flood. Now, all of those documents have been imaged and made available online, while the actual books have been moved to a safer location.
I have also worked with the Civil Rights Initiative at the UM Law School, and the organization Justice InDeed, to document Washtenaw County's dark history of racially restrictive covenants.
I was well prepared to be the county's chief election official. I had served as a poll worker and challenger in city and township elections, and as an attorney for candidates in recounts. Starting in the 90s, I've written and lectured on issues ranging from authenticating voters to the appropriate technology for tabulating ballots.
I have been a longtime advocate for needed changes in the election system, including no-reason absentee voting and post-election audits. I have been in the forefront of those fighting the unconstitutional 2012 law that makes it far more difficult for voters to recall their elected officials.
Conflict over elections is expected to reach a crescendo this year, particularly in the "swing state" of Michigan:
The best defense against voter suppression and disruption is a county clerk with deep election experience.
I would appreciate your support.

2024.05.14 20:45 Mountain-Low-8719 The Girl in Blue

In the town of Portswin, Tennessee during the 1970s, there lived the Dorvell twins: Paul and Lara. With their dark brown hair and lovely brown eyes, they acted like they owned the school. They always treated their classmates like they were beneath them. Most kids are afraid to stand up to them because their parents are members of the PTA and they knew what would happen to them if they did.
However, there was only one person in town who wasn't afraid of them. Her name was Sallie Garrett and she was the new kid who just moved with her parents from the big city of Philadelphia in the north. Every day, she always wore a blue dress to school and at home which most kids thought was pretty weird.
She didn't care what they thought, though and when she first met the Dorvell twins, she only bumped into them by accident and that made Paul, the tougher of the twins angry. He told Sallie to apologize at once and she did so, sarcastically of course which only served to make them even more mad.
Once Sallie left, Lara and Paul plotted to make the new girl's life as miserable as possible. And for the next couple of days, they did so by flicking paper balls at her, tripping her in the school cafeteria, and calling her mean names. Sallie just ignored them, not letting their bullying get the best of her.
Finally, the twins had enough and they planned something so bad that it would change everything in their small town forever. One day, as Sallie was walking home from school, she noticed two people following her. She assumed that they were just other kids looking to make friends with her, at first.
But they kept following her and she was getting tired of it. Sallie turned around and she recognized the ones who are following her: Paul and Lara Dorvell. Her eyes widened and she began to sprint into the forest. She ran for miles and miles looking for a place to hide, but the twins were already behind her each of them holding a big rock in their hands.
Lara and Paul bashed her head with the rocks from behind and they continued to do so over and over again until Sallie stopped moving or fighting back. She was dead. Without any remorse, the evil twins buried her body that was wearing the blue dress in the woods, hoping to get away with the sin they have committed.
For a while, no one noticed that Sallie Garrett had vanished. But after a few hours, her folks started to get concerned that she hasn't arrived home for supper. So they began posting missing posters of the girl and even started a search party with the entire Dorvell family joining in to find the girl.
Tired of looking for Sallie, Paul and his sister headed off to another part of the woods to relax before they could continue on their search. Suddenly, they began to hear a voice. The voice sounded familiar as it said, Vengeance. Vengeance.
At first, they brushed it off as just the wind. But as the voice continued to repeat Vengeance, the twins started to feel like they were losing their minds. They covered their ears to block out the sound, but it got louder and louder until it was right behind them.
I'm here.
The Dorvell twins turned around to see Sallie just as she was when she died in her blue dress. But she and the dress were covered in dirt with Sallie herself still with the bleeding wound from her head.
"I-it can't be," Paul stuttered before screaming at her. "You're dead! You're dead!"
But Sallie just laughed and locked eyes with her killer, putting him in a trance. Lara hesitantly walked to her brother, but he smacked her in the head with a rock. The same rock he used to kill Sallie. Lara fell to the ground and tried to crawl away, but he caught up to her and began smashing her with the rock. And then, everything went black.
Once it was done, Sallie snapped the boy out of his hypnosis before smiling sweetly and fading away into the afterlife.
When the townsfolk found Sallie's body, they also found Paul standing over the body of his now dead sister, his lifeless eyes staring up at the sky. He tried to tell them that it wasn't him and it was Sallie's fault for making him kill his sister in the first place. Yet no one believed him. After all, his shirt and pants were covered in his sister's blood. So he admitted to not only killing Sallie, but also killing his sister.
After that, he was found guilty for the murders. But because of his young age, he was put away in a juvenile detention center before transferring to the county prison a few years later. For the rest of his life, he would often wonder whether it was guilt that drove him to kill his sister. Or maybe it was all in his head and that he was so obsessed with maintaining his status that drove him to commit this deed.
We'll never know, but this tragic incident impacted their small town for years to come and it still does to this day.

2024.05.14 20:40 Personal-Reach352 What in the Gen-Z?

I’m beyond frustrated with some of my Gen-Z coworkers who are fresh out of law school. They seem to think that the legal profession stops at 5 PM and don’t grasp the level of responsibility required.
Case in point: I recently assigned an associate to draft a motion for summary judgment. Instead, she handed me a complaint. The complaint had already been filed, and she decided to draft another one. I mean, how does one think the action is initiated? This shows me that she didn’t review the docket, didn’t check the calendar, and didn’t read my email with the assignment fully.
Now, with the deadline in two days, she refuses to work after hours to fix her error, citing the need to set clear boundaries. The lack of communication is astonishing—she was asking her clueless desk neighbor for advice instead of coming to me, the person who assigned the task and is familiar with the case.
And to top it off, she had the audacity to ask for a template on how to draft a motion for summary judgment in response? She has access to all of our files. She has access to other cases. She has access to Lexis. I now need to STOP what I’m doing and make sure you get something that you can copy and paste from? Law schools need to do better. Honestly, close the doors because I learned something completely different. These grads need to understand the realities of the profession they chose.
I'm five years out of law school, finally with the authority to make assignments. I strive to be a supportive manager and mentor, but there's only so much one can take. I've always burned the midnight oil to meet deadlines, while she’s had this assignment for 2.5 weeks with barely any interruptions. It's mind-boggling that she turned in a complaint instead of a fully drafted motion. This isn’t an isolated incident with our new associates—they seem to lack a basic sense of urgency and responsibility. Most of them are pending admission and expect me to catch every error before submission, but ultimately, my name is on the filing. Now, I brace myself to receive a subpar product on the eve of the deadline and will have to use every waking hour to salvage it. Despite being relatively young in the profession, I would never treat someone who entrusted me with an assignment this way.
Has anyone else been dealing with this? How do you handle such situations? I want to ensure we're fostering growth and responsibility, but this kind of behavior is unacceptable.
EDIT: Contemplating deleting this because I didn’t realize it would spark such a fight.
The associate is getting me another draft by 5 PM to take over for the next day. In reality, I’m still learning. I’m still working and I have spent the past five years drinking from a fire hydrant with little to no help. I’ve never managed others before but look at them for assistance to take things off my plate.
It gets frustrating to have this idea of a profession versus a job engraved in me and to see others forget it. I work so late and have no personal life. Admittedly, I wrote this out of frustration of having to pick up the slack from everyone else. I have had four different clerks/associates do all the same things with different assignments. One actually quit while I was informing him of his mistakes and said it was my job to fix the problem not his. It’s a trend that I’m observing with those fresh to field. Five years ago I would have been so afraid to say something like that.
This associate is new and been here six months. I’m not a part of our training staff. I’m not a part of our hiring staff. But I’ve realized that I need to be a part of her training to avoid things like this from happening again. We could have had a conversation prior and perhaps resolved this. I’m committed to doing better.
Thanks for all the feedback.

2024.05.14 19:57 therealmichaelbolton what's the 411 on Nolensville?

I know there's tons of people living in WillCo who hang around this sub. We've lived in Williamson County since we were little kids, between my husband and myself we've lived almost everywhere in the county at least once. Currently living in Fairview but considering a move to Nolensville, which is the one corner I'm just not as familiar with. Looking for some honest pros/cons from anyone who is living or has lived there. How does it compare to the rest of the county? Any insights into the schools and their culture would be extra appreciated.

2024.05.14 19:32 DragonflyEnough1743 How do you deal with fear?

I am in my late 40's and I just buried my father after a nine year struggle with Alzheimer's. My mother is in a care home for advanced dementia. She will likely die in a year or two. I am an only child. My children, boys, are fairly young (7 and 11). My husband is my age and very kind.
With the loss of my parents, I find myself feeling very vulnerable and alone. I still have my husband (THANK GOD!) but I wake up in the night, terrified of what I would do if something happens to him. There is no other family for me. It's not about managing financially... it's about managing emotionally. What will I do when my kids are grown and I am widowed? Can I die alone?
EVERYTHING feels so temporary (and strangely, stale), sometimes... like I am falling through a world of things, collecting bits and throwing out bits in a whirlwind of endless, screaming change. And, yet, stale, in that the same old mid-morning sunlight that once fell on my mother's book collection in the early 1980's as I ran my fingers across the spines, is now falling on my own book collection as my children do the same. My mother's book collection is long since dispersed. When will mine also, be thrown back out into the world? But it's the same old light and the same old midmorning and the same old morning dove coos and the same old dog barking noises that exist in every neighborhood and even though it's new to my family, it's the same old house that's been here since 1928 and the only things that change are the people and the things in it... just falling through it in time.
This temporariness, this staleness.... it leaves me feeling very frightened.
When the school calls because my son is not behaving well, when the memory care facility calls because something is wrong, when the mail comes with a letter I wasn't expecting, when the doorbell rings at night, when my calendar begins to fill up with doctors appointment in an eerily similar way to my parents, when the Walgreens smells like the room my father died in, when I go to the dentist and everyone from receptionist to dentist is younger than me and the world seems to be filling up with people who don't have the experience I do... All I want to do is call my parents and have them comfort me. What will I do when I cannot call my husband?
So, I wonder, to those of you who have lived through this... what do you do when you are alone and afraid?
Thank you.

2024.05.14 19:29 moonflannel "I did this to me!"

So back in middle school we had to watch an anti-drugs PSA type movie in health class. From what I recall, it was local, I believe made in Carroll County following the tragic overdose of a teenager. The movie told a story I believe was based on what happened to the teen boy that inspired the movie - he got into heroin and his life spiraled out of control. It's genuinely heartbreaking that a life was lost to addiction, but there's a part where the boy depicted in the film runs into the woods and, as he's realizing how his life is spiraling out of control, begins to shout "I did this to me! I did this to me!" And the execution of it has haunted me for years.
Any chance anyone here has access to it and would be willing to share?
Thank you!
