Mini Pirate News
2024.05.14 01:55 flwwhtrbt Mini Pirate News
Well, let's wrap up what I've found at the very least
interesting in the last couple weeks for pirates and purists alike! This one is very small, not much happening lately!
Sony: As maybe you've seen, there's no better indication that 'if they don't let you buy it, then pirate it' than Sony
delists Ghost of Tsushima PC from various Steam regions, much like Helldivers 2 saw.
Following Sony's decision last week to delist Helldivers 2 in 170 regions worldwide on Steam, it seems this will be the firm's PC stance moving forward, and it has since done the same for the imminent PC release of Ghost of Tsushima. More regions have been added to the list, taking the total number of territories affected to 180, which is now consistent across both titles.
Previously, Sony has said that Ghost of Tsushima's single player offering would be unaffected by this additional requirement. The game's Steam Page still states that a PSN account is required to play the Legends multiplayer mode, but it was delisted anyway. Due to the open nature of Valve's platform, these changes are pretty visible, and including Sucker Punch's primarily single player open world epic in this blanket ban comes as a legitimate surprise.
SteamDB's post here shows the refund.
This is bullshit. The good news? Sony do not use Denuvo for their PC games, so it will be available as soon as possible to be pirated.
Rockstar: By all accounts, it looks like Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption will be releasing on PC - in line with their usual tactics of releasing on a console platform and leaving PC for last, at least it
will (probably) be coming to PC.
Denuvo: A Denuvo 'outage' made a completely single-player game Persona 5 unplayble - amusingly Denuvo claim that "there was no outage related to its servers at this time"
- The Denuvo server outage rendered the PC version of Persona 5 Royal unplayable on May 2nd
- A partial workaround allowed Steam users to access the game without online functionality, but most didn't use it, with the game's concurrent player count consequently plummeting from 16,600 to just over 600
- The outage lasted for hours, angering fans
The thing we can take away from this is Denuvo sucks, and it's just better to play the damn thing via Yuzu or Ryujinx.
Related, we now see that it is confirmed that Homeworld 3 will release with Denuvo. The only good news is that Gearbox is one of the few publishers who remove Denuvo. So...just wait for this one.
Just...interesting and useful: This video guide via YouTuber 'MonroeWorld' shows you how to SSHFS - mount your Steam Deck as a Windows drive.
"Access your Deck's storage using whatever file manager or tools you want ON AND FROM Windows. In a few minutes, you can copy roms, access compatdata, backup/restore save files and more without ever leaving the comfort of Windows. In about ten minutes, you will have your common Steam Deck locations mounted as drive letters in Windows - accessing them just like any other Windows drive"
Here is a github link for a GUI for the sshfs manager Even better u/ReplacementFun53 has a full written guide on how to do so here!!! - 100% what you should be checking out, it's perfect!
FitGirl: Has a new section on her page (remember, always use the official site, not one of the dodgy rip-offs)
Updates now have their own sub-section on her page for games which have, you guessed it, been recently updated - called Updates Digest. Super handy! I love seeing these kind of incremental UX updates, yay!
Hydra Launcher: Hydra is an open-source launcher released in the last few weeks by the Brazilian community. Being able to download and launch games from fitgirl and dodi - it has/is a torrent client, automatically applies metadata for games, emulators and roms; seems to hope to be an all-in-one piracy portal. Personally, I prefer to manually add games from trusted links myself. But I'm paranoid. At least it is
interesting.
Hydra is a free open game launcher focused on being 100% safe, self-sufficient, ad-free, without registration, without subscription and without waiting times.
Hydra combines games from platforms like Steam and Epic Games with trackers from repackers/crackers known and trusted by the pirate gaming community (such as Fitgirl, Dodi and KaOsKrew.
The game downloads are done directly through the platform, as we have our own private torrent protocol.
Hydra currently has the capability to search among a list of more than 13,000 repacks posted in secure places on the internet, but not limited to that. being self-sufficient, Hydra can navigate the trackers not only looking for updates of games that are already registered but also for games that have just been released.
Lastly the AMA with Dodi: Well and truly locked in for the 16th.
I have a post pinned at the top of PiratedGames, and have just reached out to the mods of
Piracy about posting in their sub letting the users know what is happening. I also just posted in his discord server (at his behest). The only thing yet to be determined will be the exact time, for Americans it may be the 15th (your time), but...time-zones fry my brain so I don't know. Really excited about having him come by, the repacker scene is fascinating to me, so I can't wait to hear what he says.
- It will be the typical method: top level questions will be more likely to get an answer.
- Comment a question, he (may) comment a reply.
- The usual sub-reddit rules I have apply more than ever, but the most important is to be kind.
- I have set a custom user flair for his name here, but it should be obvious who is who: u/DODI-Releases is his account.
- I have nothing for this final dot-point.
Guides? I'm working on one lil guide since its been awhile since my last. Most probably will post after the aforementioned AMA.
Lastly? Thanks to all of you, we're nearing 17k members here and you're all super lovely. This is such a strange sub-reddit
because everyone is so damned nice. I just wanted to thank you all for being here, it makes it so nice.
If you wanted to show off your Deck's home screen - then this post a couple days ago is where you can do it!
Thanks, all <3

2024.05.11 20:14 aodhstormeyes I'm sorry, I can't override the price for you.
So at the start of my shift we go cashless of the register and at that point, until basically the time I'm clocking out, the only transactions we use the register for are EBT purchases. No cash, no cashback, no lotto, nothing. All cash and card purchases during the night must go through our self checkout, even alcohol and tobacco.
Well we just finished our seasonal store reset and got all of our new deals and sales posted up everywhere. Problem is, our SCO still sometimes rings up last season's sales on a few items. Or better yet, our clearance bins where the prices have been marked down manually usually pricing stickers. Now our SCO is a nice piece of tech but it does not give me the power to go into the system and edit the prices of things.
I know. I've looked.
And management watches how much we use the POS and for what purpose, but not the "why" of it, so if they see me ringing people up, overriding prices, and ignoring corporate policy...
Well my job's not worth that.
So yeah, I have to explain that I can't use the register to someone what feels like half a dozen times a night since May started. FML

2024.05.10 23:58 Long_Fox_8060 Introducing USD+: A Fully Collateralized Stablecoin with Daily Profit Payouts
TL;DR: TL;DR: USD+ is a fully collateralized stablecoin pegged to USDC with the collateral being deployed across a portfolio of low-risk yield-farming strategies. Yield-farming strategies generate daily yield, which is passed over to USD+ holders daily, yields follow you wherever you go — be it your wallet, LP, or any other DeFi strategy.. The collateralization with reputable stablecoins aspect allows USD+ to solidify its strong peg against USDC.
Join
OvernightFinance for news about what we are up to!
The need for a more Robust Stablecoin
Stablecoins have gained prominence within DeFi and allow users to take advantage of the best of both worlds that they offer: the stability of fiat currencies and blockchain technology.
However, stablecoins aren’t robust and lack a consistent peg. This is mostly fuelled because of them lacking an appropriate collateralization aspect. Even if such a narrative exists, they often lack the rails to convert the corresponding stablecoin to another currency to facilitate arbitrages in an attempt to restore the peg.
Moreover, for a user to earn yields on their stablecoins, they have to devote time, and effort and possess the necessary knowledge of DeFi which can prove a hassle for the novice DeFi user. Not utilizing them for Yield-Farming proves to be Capital Efficient within DeFi.
How USD+ makes Stablecoins More Robust
The scenarios mentioned above are detrimental to the health of such stablecoins and hence most are lacking an established framework/proven model.
On the other hand, this gap is bridged by the USD+ stablecoin that allows users to earn passive income on top of establishing a secure collateralization narrative. The stablecoin is pegged to USDC and always redeemable for the collateral amount (1 USD+ being equal to 1 USDC). To make it more capital efficient, the collateral is deployed across a spectrum of Stable-to-Stable Pools that generate rewards. These rewards are then passed onto holders on a daily via rebase mechanism.
Where do the Yields from USD+ come from?
The yields for USD+ come from the collateral deployed across a spectrum of stable-to-stable pools. The protocol employs unparalleled transparency with complete on-chain activities — users can see the strategies and collateral on Overnight’s dApp.
The Yield-Farming strategies are risk-averse and adopt a diversified approach — safety is prioritized over exorbitant APYs. Similarly, the collateral is limited to prominent, collateralized stablecoins the likes of USDC, USDT & DAI.
A user can invest in the strategies employed by the protocol themselves according to the respective proportions and earn the same APYs assuming that they auto compound daily — though this may prove to be a hassle for some.
The entire process is organic with there being no native inflation/emissions of any sort — the yields are what the rewards are. This means that the yields are proportionate to the rewards earned from the Yield-Strategies, any changes in rewards earned correspondingly affect the APYs earnt. All of this is done while maintaining USD+ as a stable asset that can be minted/redeemed upon demand.
USD+ Advantages
The mechanism mentioned above makes USD+ highly capital efficient and has been generating 8–12% APY as of currently. Compare this with USDC where holding it yields no profit payouts and a user has to partake in the Yield-Farming part themselves; in doing so, they go through the following:
- Possess knowledge of DeFi protocols and handling funds across numerous protocols
- Optimize their returns via compounding (daily & manually)
- Bear exorbitant transaction fees
On the other hand, with USD+ all that hassle is reduced to something as simple as buying a token. In other words, managing stablecoin cash is risky, cumbersome, and costly — this amounts to the stablecoin being:
- A DeFi equivalent of a Money Market fund, with a highly conservative and liquid [DeFi] portfolio
- A fully decentralized protocol performing all of its activities fully on-chain with an unparalleled level of disclosure and transparency
- Your ultimate hedge against inflation
- A readily source of passive incom
- An appreciating collateral
- Hedge against market volatility
- Generating additional yields in Liquidity Provisions
How the Protocol Maintains a Risk-Averse Approach
The Overnight protocol strives to maintain itself as risk-averse and in doing so, uses the following mechanisms.
- Only Secure Stablecoins are used: like USDC, USDT, and DAI.
- Funds are deployed on DEXes after a thorough due-diligence process — this involves analyzing the smart contracts.
- Strategies are tested on devstand to ensure that the yields are what they’re advertised as.
- The Overnight Protocol is audited by Hacken with more audits to continue as development is continued.
How it works
As said previously, yields from USD+ accrue on a daily horizon and give you an auto-compounded effect whereby you earn yields on top of yields — your USD+ balance grows daily.
The rebase mechanism is triggered manually by the protocol and the entire process happens seamlessly within 6 steps that are as follows:
- User uses USDC or BUSD to mint USD+ via Overnight’s dApp — BUSD is only applicable for minting USD+ on BSC
- Overnight’s Smart Contracts devise a logic-automated investment methodology for Yield-Generating Strategies
- The fees & rewards from step 2 (including inflationary rewards, swap fees, and lending fees earned) are swapped for USDC
- New USD+ is minted from the earned USDC
- The minted USD+ goes back into your wallet via a rebase mechanism
What is a Rebase and how does it work?
A rebase mechanism is used to payout the yields earned from strategies. In doing so, the circulating supply expands and is financed by the USDC earned from the Yield-Farming strategies. The mechanism is similar to what’s employed by IB-Tokens (Interest Bearing) the likes of aUSDC from AAVE where your underlying token quantities grow passively proportionate to the lending fees earned.
Smart contracts use the following methodology to determine a user’s rebase rewards:
Rebase Rewards =
User Holdings\Rebase Amount / Total Holdings = Rebase for the user for the said day*
The Team behind Overnight
The team behind Overnight is fully doxxed and can be viewed on the
website. The team possesses an extensive background involving institutions the likes of Morgan Stanley, BCG, Google, etc.
Use cases for USD+
Since users’ balance of USD+ keeps increasing over time, there lies a unique proposition that protocols, fiat investors, and the crypto community could tap into.
Provide liquidity — AMM
- Liquidity providers can earn both transaction fees from DEX and interest from USD+ by supplying USD+ liquidity.
- An Automated Market Maker (AMM) utilizes USD+ in Liquidity Pools to boost yields for Yield-Farmers (e.g, USD+/USDC, USD+/WETH, trading pairs) as it starts receiving yields on USD+ posted by liquidity providers
Lending
- USD+ can serve as collateral in lending protocols. Users can continue to earn USD+ interest while using it as collateral and therefore serves as appreciating collateral improving their HF.
- For borrowers using USD+ as collateral: Posting USD+ as collateral makes their position “healthier” overtime due to the yields earned
- For lenders: Earn lending fees in addition to USD+ yields — serves as maximizing your returns
- For USD+ borrowers: Receive the USD+ interest so the market interest model should consider this part.
- USD+ can be used to reduce market exposure while continuing to Yield-Farm via it as the strategy would earn considerably more if plain vanilla USDC were to be used. This strategy massively reduces ILs however, it does not negate them.
- A user deposits USD+ into Overnight’s Exchange-Traded-Strategies
- Logic-Automated smart contracts use a portion of the collateral to deposit USDC into AAVE
- MATIC is borrowed via an HF of 1.5x against the collateral
- MATIC is used to LP with the remaining USD+
- Smart contracts rebalance HF upon mints/redeems at least once a day and liquidate rewards
- Rewards are paid out back to users after accounting for the minimal IL
Crypto Community
- The Crypto-Community can utilize USD+ to put their idle assets to work and generate yields via it.
- A crypto-investor temporarily exits their ETH position and holds USD+ as a ‘risk-free yield generating alternative’ until their market view improves
- A new blockchain project raises [Х] m USD in cryptocurrency and stablecoins to fund its 2-year roadmap, and chooses to keep it in USD+ to minimize volatility while earning 8–12% APY from the stablecoin
Fiat-Investors
USD+ can be considered as an alternative to a money market fund but with utmost transparency and a higher-yielding source.
- An online broker, aka Robinhood, lets its clientele buy USD+ from its app as a high-yield alternative to the money market fund
- A Neobank, aka Revolut, builds a savings account, with the rate linked to USD+’s yield
- A qualified investor invests in a registered/regulated fund in a respectable jurisdiction, e.g. Switzerland, Singapore, or the Netherlands, that holds USD+
The above use cases are centered around yield generation. As USD+ is also a stablecoin, there is obviously a multitude of use cases around payments, be that P2P, B2C, or C2B, on-chain or across chains; as UDS+ is pegged to USDC, on-chain to off-chain use cases are also possible.
Closing Comments
USD+ is built owing to the need for enhanced capital efficiency within DeFi and simplifies the concept of Yield-Farming for the novice user — with USD+, this is as simple as buying a token. The use cases mentioned above are game-changers within the ecosystem.

2024.05.10 22:34 Joshh170 Manor Lords Reveals New Update Patch Notes
| Developer Slavic Magic has rolled out a major patch for Manor Lords, addressing numerous fixes, balancing tweaks, and introducing new cosmetics, among other enhancements. This Manor Lords update, labeled version 0.7.960 and available on the experimental branch, brings significant changes to gameplay mechanics, aiming to improve the player experience. Manor Lords is a medieval city-builder and real-time tactics game developed by Slavic Magic and published by Hooded Horse. Set in late 14th-century Franconia, the game combines city-building with tactical warfare across three modes focusing on growth and conquest. Players manage resources, supply chains, and settlements while facing internal and external threats, with historical accuracy enhancing the gameplay. Despite a delay to polish the game, Manor Lords became one of Steam's most anticipated releases with over three million wishlists. Manor Lords’ patch notes for version 0.7.960 reveal a wide range of changes and improvements. One major addition is the introduction of the King's Tax to Manor Lords’ taxation system, an annual tax collected from all players, contributing to their liege. This mechanic aims to balance economic gameplay, discouraging players from accumulating excessive wealth without consequences. Additionally, adjustments to global/local trade options for Trading Posts, optimizations in farming mechanics, and enhancements in combat dynamics have been implemented. In terms of gameplay and balance, the patch brings several notable changes to trading mechanics and resource management. Players have reported some Manor Lords’ bugs, such as Hildebolt's claims rate, the spawning of "None" people who refused to work, clogged Trading Posts, and the game getting stuck at the summary screen post-victory or defeat. Patch 0.7.960 addressed these bugs and introduced quality-of-life enhancements. It also rectified issues such as crop growth during winter, inefficient saw pits triggering storage problems, and market oversupply/undersupply systems. Regarding Manor Lords’ cosmetics, the update includes the addition of a new patron saint banner graphic featuring St. Maurice, a visual representation of carried dead bodies, improved alignment of debris piles with ground slopes, and fixes for animation issues like the abrupt ending of the torch-throwing animation and armor clipping problems. Additionally, new variations of Manor Lords' upgraded retinue helmets and bodies, such as the Pointy bascinet and Coat of plates, have been introduced, along with increased precision for animal placement in stables and adjustments to idle poses for two-handed weapons. The developer advises players to make a backup of their save files before switching to a beta version to avoid any potential issues. It offered simple steps for players to follow in order to access the Manor Lords experimental branch properly. As Manor Lords continues to evolve through updates and community feedback, players can expect a polished gameplay experience with patch 0.7.960. Manor Lords Update v0.7.960 Patch Notes Major Changes The King's Tax (or Annual Royal Tax) This tax is collected annually from all players (main player and AI) and goes to your liege. It's counted per population and therefore should become a counterbalance for players who hoard huge wealth despite having non-optimized economies. [WIP] For now, the player can go in debt without consequence, but in the future, the player will lose the king's favor and eventually, the king's army will show up as enemies for players who refuse to pay. Global/Local Trade Switch for Trading Posts The player can now switch trade to "local only" in the trading post for each type of good if they want to use the trading post to exchange goods between their own regions but ignore the free merchants. For now, 2 trading posts (both regions) are still required to make it work. Employed traders will prioritize travel to the place with the best prices to commence trade, potentially including regions owned by other Lords. For now, I reduced the transport distance from the calculation to make it more predictable for the player where the traders will go (to the place with the best price). Regional wealth is still required for exchanging goods between regions with a trading post since I want to keep the regions as independent economic units which in my view a more realistic simulation of economy. Gameplay & Balance [Experimental] When consuming food, people will now pick a random food resource instead of eating food in a specific order. [Experimental] Fertility is no longer drained after crop growth reaches 100% so that always micromanaging early harvest is no longer a preferred strategy. Yield may still increase over 100% growth if max yield is not reached. [Experimental] When harvesting, the crops are directly added to the field inventory instead of the villager inventory. This was done to ensure that harvesting walk times aren't the main bottleneck for farming, especially for large fields. [Side note: moving harvest season to August is also possible in a future patch if needed] [Experimental] Prioritized Oxen plowing over transporting resources back to the granary & warehouse to reduce the ox walking back and forth from the plowed field every time a new batch of resources is available for transport. Plowing shed now adds 2 livestock worker slots. Lowered the rate of the Baron claiming regions and adjusted it to better reflect the game settings. Removed the worker camp upgrade - it was meant for colony regions and will be readded when they are properly implemented. Food-producing residential plots no longer stock up on their produce before they share with the marketplace. Increased sawpit log storage space to 5. [Experimental] When establishing a trade route, the merchants will no longer all spawn in the nearest tradepoint. Instead, the game will distribute the merchants to circle between various tradepoints in order to make building trading posts right on the edge of the region less optimal. Increased warbows ranged attack from 4 to 12. [Experimental] "Trade logistics" development branch now lowers the cost of new trade routes by 50% instead of clamping it at 25. [Experimental] Cost of opening new trade routes now scales exponentially with every opened trade route. [Experimental] Base cost of opening a trade route was increased from 12 to 20 (that is before the good value multiplier). [Experimental] When market is oversupplied, the player can still export stuff, although for much lower price. [Experimental] The price multiplier for oversupplied goods is now 0.75x for oversupplied and 0.5x for critically oversupplied. [Experimental] How fast market is oversupplied no longer depends on the value of goods because it punished having high value trade routes. Now the oversupply rates are equal for all good types. [Experimental] Better deals development branch reduces the foreign import tariff by 50% instead of removing it completely. [Experimental] Reduced ale consumption by 75% (around 1/3 per family per month). [Experimental] Made the building placement steepness limits harsher because the trading posts and churches often looked super janky on very sharp slopes. Soldiers no longer trigger "unburied bodies" approval factor when corpses are in their proximity. [Experimental] Hitching post is free again, to reduce chances of players getting stuck with no ox, no hitching post and no ability to order an ox. Minor Changes Applied the "mindfulness" system that was initially designed for the oxen to the free merchants. This system is used to reduce clumps and traffic jams. Moved the location of trades further off map to make sure there is some space for all the trade wagons even if the players place the trading post right on the edge of the map. If a trading post is clogged, traders are allowed to make transactions without entering the shed, as long as they are within the general building bounds. [Experimental] Changed default AA under DX11 to TAA. Added a spatialization update call when recruits are sneakily teleported home when rallied to ensure collisions are properly calculated after teleportation. Added a check for idle villagers to avoid hanging around the graveyard for random conversation since it looked weird. Made "is close to camera" value update on setting follow mode to make sure the game doesn't optimize animations or sound effects thinking the character is still far from the camera. Disabled fire damage for people who have water buckets and are actively firefighting + reduced the fire damage amount. When all resource visualization slots are "filled", villagers will transport to a random one instead of the first one found. This ensures less traffic jams for instance at the churchyard if all graves are "full" already. Firefighting villagers will now ignore anti-clogging behavior (waiting their turn at narrow pathfinding points). Added a "mourning period left" UI element in the residential panel to display how many days of mourning are left until the burgage plot can bring in more family members again. Added mourning icon to the building floater. Made sure mourning period is properly added to save data. After continuing the game after a victory the camera should go back to the player's main region instead of levitating over the map edge. [Experimental] Disabled the ability to quicksave during the game over / victory cinematic. Disabled the ability to manual save the game after being defeated & added a tooltip explaining why saves are disabled. Disabled quick save and autosave if game was lost. When ox gathers a log, it will prioritize immediately bringing it to the sawpit before bringing it to the logging camp unless construction reserve forbids it. Improved marketplace logistics efficiency and optimization. Tuned the AI retreat distances in an attempt to reduce how often its archers get into the loop of attack-retreat. Added the missing trading post building thumbnail. Minor unit in-town pathfinding updates. Swapped the old UE4 destructible system for a new, UE5 friendly, chaos based debris system. For now it's just used for chopped firewood cutter logs. Further tweaks to properly choose the right default AA/upscaler during the first time launch correctly for specific GPUs (e.g., RTX properly defaulting to DLSS). Added kings tax rate multiplier to the game setup settings. Due to mismatch in global market supply stock values, old saves (from builds 0.7.954-0.7.956) will have their market supply reset on loading. [Experimental] Due to changes in how food is consumed, a popup "Food consumed" may no longer appear if a building is selected while a food is being consumed from inventory. [Experimental] Made the sheep flock a bit more closely together to look more like a herd. Steepness limits no longer apply when placing rally points. Players can now rally their militia on fields and pastures. Trading posts will now display a price range for imports in case they can buy it both from other regions AND from foreign trade sources. Increased the sheep & lamb collision radius. Capped the number of workers who supply a single market stall at the same time to 2 to reduce markets getting completely clogged with the new upped market supply frequency. Further optimized the market supply functions to make late game towns run smoother. Optimized the function that searches for a friend to do idle tasks with (like conversations). Optimized the door opening animations. Increased the precision when checking whether a character is inside a building on fire and should take damage. Unified the currency icon in the mercenary company panel to make it clearer that you're paying with treasury and not regional wealth. Added accommodation call after fire is started and turns people homeless so that they can be reaccommodated to other available burgage plots immediately. Since almost all families have more than 1 family member, I made the "workplace/reassign" buttons aligned vertically instead of horizontally in the family list. Fixed old fonts being used in the family entry widgets. Crashfixes Fixed a crash when doing a sequence of livestock import, export and import, because "home" wasn't cleared properly during export and the same animal was reimported. Fixed a rare crash if a handcart fails to spawn, probably if the trading post was built so that part of it crosses the map edge. Fixed crash on startup if OpenXr sdk is installed. Bugfixes Fixed victory status not resetting after starting a new game, leading to a game over screen not appearing if the player lost/won multiple games without turning the game off. Fixed crop transports not accounting for the farm work area. Fixed crops dying in the winter instead of actually increasing yield by absorbing nutrients from the snow as it was intended for winter crops. Fixed oxen sometimes "ghost plowing" a field when they are waiting on their guide. Fixed plow and ox sometimes misaligning on 12x game speed. Fixed farm workers not accounting for oxen plowing the farms in some situations, leading to a lot of unnecessary collisions on the field. Fixed crop rotation unplowing the fields. Fixed disbanded mercenary group becoming immediately available again after save/load cycle. Fixed the trading post export transactions not moving regional wealth between the regions correctly if owned by the same lord. Fixed paused taverns fulfilling the entertainment requirement. Fixed an attempt for never-ending fires if a fire was triggered after the building was already on fire. Fixed problem banners not erasing after an entity gets erased (for instance, an animal runs away and leaves a "not enough pasture space" banner). Fixed "update task" sometimes triggering before a character gets assigned their region. Fixed livestock sometimes being unaccommodated after order even though there is stable or pasture space due to being transferred to the region twice (once when buying and once when livestock merchant brings it to the building). Fixed livestock traders trading between on-map regions possibly sometimes paying twice because the ownership changing function was called both on pickup of livestock and on dropoff. Fixed the game getting stuck on the game summary screen infinitely after winning or losing the game. Fixed "none" people populating the town after a raid sometimes who just stand around waiting forever and possibly crash the game while reloading. Fixed the blurry desktop icon. Fixed the save/load menu header not translating after changing the language. Fixed dead animals triggering the mourning period in burgage plots, halting growth. Fixed mourning period halting homeless accommodation. Fixed migration/growth of family members ignoring the 30-day mourning period sometimes. Fixed the game getting stuck after you click "continue in sandbox" until any main tab is pressed. Fixed the front lighting not being visible in the retinue editor if bounced light approximation is turned to low or off. Fixed floating feedback text spawning during the cinematic mode. Fixed autosave triggering during the cinematic mode. Fixed "storage full" triggering for wrong buildings sometimes (for example, sawpit having 1/1 logs). Fixed attempt for oxen bringing too many logs to the sawpit and crossing the storage limit. Fixed free merchants sometimes getting stuck if a trading post was built so close to the edge that a portion of it was outside of any region bounds. Fixed horse wagon rotations getting a bit too wonky on slopes. Fixed a bug where a unit could no longer move due to being forever stuck in "waiting for pathfinding to finish" if another unit with a lower squadID got completely destroyed. Fixed the wrong yarn basket carrying animation. Fixed traders not importing from on-map regions even though the price is better than buying from tradepoints. Fixed farm workers & farm oxen stealing planks from fields which are getting "fenced up". Fixed "homeless" problem banner not disappearing after upgrading homeless camp to a worker camp. Fixed animals not getting removed from stable space / pasture space after death. Fixed animal corpses not disappearing over time. Added a dirty fix for families moving into homes but not registering correctly and not displaying in the UI, leading to a "secret" family living in one of the burgage plots. The reason is still unknown and being investigated. Cosmetics Added a new patron saint banner graphics: St Maurice. Added a carried dead body visualization. Made debris piles align to ground slope. Fixed the throw torch animation ending abruptly. New upgraded retinue helmet variation: Pointy bascinet. Fixed the armor clipping through the leg of the upgraded retinue puffy sleeve jupon body variation. New upgraded retinue body variation: Coat of plates. New upgraded retinue helmet variation: Hounskull bascinet with a gilded cover. Increased location precision for animals standing in the stables. Fixed the praying animation. Fixed the wrong door orientation for LV2 cottage variation B (with a planked gable). Adjusted the two-handed weapon default idle pose to have a more natural stance. New militia helmet variation - banded bascinet with a mail aventail. Fixed some mail armor variants clipping with helmets on T3 militia units (militia mail will get their own unique variations soon). Reworked lv2 granary model with proper animated doors. submitted by Joshh170 to GameGeeks [link] [comments] |
2024.05.10 15:04 Matt_HoodedHorse [Patch Notes] Manor Lords Experimental Update 0.7.960
Howdy Folks,
I come bearing good news!
We're excited to announce the release of a new
experimental branch for Manor Lords,
version 0.7.960. This experimental update brings significant gameplay changes and numerous improvements.
Important Notice: Before you switch to the new beta version of the game, it's absolutely crucial that you back up your save files. Failing to do so could result in the potential loss of your progress. The new strings are not localized yet and stability hasn't yet been thoroughly tested. Some balancing changes are still experimental.
To access your saves on Steam for Manor Lords. - Press Win + E
- Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\ManorLords\Saved\SaveGames into the search bar.
To discuss this build, please join the official Discord server
https://discord.gg/manorlords. You'll find a channel for discussing the ongoing pre_release branch.
You can read Slavic Magic's full Steam announcement
here. How to Access the Experimental Branch:
- Open Steam
- Right-click on Manor Lords in your library
- Select Properties
- Navigate to the BETAS tab
- Enter the password: veryNiceBasket
- Select "pre_release" from the "Beta participation" dropdown
- Wait for the game to update (restart Steam if needed)
- Launch the game
Major Changes:
- The King's Tax (or Annual Royal Tax)
- This tax is collected annually from all players (main player and AI) and goes to your liege. It's counted per population and therefore should become a counterbalance for players who hoard huge wealth despite having non-optimized economies.
- [WIP] For now, the player can go in debt without consequence, but in the future, the player will lose the king's favor and eventually, the king's army will show up as enemies for players who refuse to pay.
- Global/Local Trade Switch for Trading Posts
- The player can now switch trade to "local only" in the trading post for each type of good if they want to use the trading post to exchange goods between their own regions but ignore the free merchants.
- For now, 2 trading posts (both regions) are still required to make it work.
- Employed traders will prioritize travel to the place with the best prices to commence trade, potentially including regions owned by other Lords. For now, I reduced the transport distance from the calculation to make it more predictable for the player where the traders will go (to the place with the best price).
- Regional wealth is still required for exchanging goods between regions with a trading post since I want to keep the regions as independent economic units which in my view a more realistic simulation of economy.
Gameplay & Balance:
- [Experimental] When consuming food, people will now pick a random food resource instead of eating food in a specific order.
- [Experimental] Fertility is no longer drained after crop growth reaches 100% so that always micromanaging early harvest is no longer a preferred strategy. Yield may still increase over 100% growth if max yield is not reached.
- [Experimental] When harvesting, the crops are directly added to the field inventory instead of the villager inventory. This was done to ensure that harvesting walk times aren't the main bottleneck for farming, especially for large fields. [Side note: moving harvest season to August is also possible in a future patch if needed]
- [Experimental] Prioritized Oxen plowing over transporting resources back to the granary & warehouse to reduce the ox walking back and forth from the plowed field every time a new batch of resources is available for transport.
- Plowing shed now adds 2 livestock worker slots.
- Lowered the rate of the Baron claiming regions and adjusted it to better reflect the game settings.
- Removed the worker camp upgrade - it was meant for colony regions and will be readded when they are properly implemented.
- Food-producing residential plots no longer stock up on their produce before they share with the marketplace.
- Increased sawpit log storage space to 5.
- [Experimental] When establishing a trade route, the merchants will no longer all spawn in the nearest tradepoint. Instead, the game will distribute the merchants to circle between various tradepoints in order to make building trading posts right on the edge of the region less optimal.
- Increased warbows ranged attack from 4 to 12.
- [Experimental] "Trade logistics" development branch now lowers the cost of new trade routes by 50% instead of clamping it at 25.
- [Experimental] Cost of opening new trade routes now scales exponentially with every opened trade route.
- [Experimental] Base cost of opening a trade route was increased from 12 to 20 (that is before the good value multiplier).
- [Experimental] When market is oversupplied, the player can still export stuff, although for much lower price.
- [Experimental] The price multiplier for oversupplied goods is now 0.75x for oversupplied and 0.5x for critically oversupplied.
- [Experimental] How fast market is oversupplied no longer depends on the value of goods because it punished having high value trade routes. Now the oversupply rates are equal for all good types.
- [Experimental] Better deals development branch reduces the foreign import tariff by 50% instead of removing it completely.
- [Experimental] Reduced ale consumption by 75% (around 1/3 per family per month).
- [Experimental] Made the building placement steepness limits harsher because the trading posts and churches often looked super janky on very sharp slopes.
- Soldiers no longer trigger "unburied bodies" approval factor when corpses are in their proximity.
- [Experimental] Hitching post is free again, to reduce chances of players getting stuck with no ox, no hitching post and no ability to order an ox.
Minor Changes:
- Applied the "mindfulness" system that was initially designed for the oxen to the free merchants. This system is used to reduce clumps and traffic jams.
- Moved the location of trades further off map to make sure there is some space for all the trade wagons even if the players place the trading post right on the edge of the map.
- If a trading post is clogged, traders are allowed to make transactions without entering the shed, as long as they are within the general building bounds.
- [Experimental] Changed default AA under DX11 to TAA.
- Added a spatialization update call when recruits are sneakily teleported home when rallied to ensure collisions are properly calculated after teleportation.
- Added a check for idle villagers to avoid hanging around the graveyard for random conversation since it looked weird.
- Made "is close to camera" value update on setting follow mode to make sure the game doesn't optimize animations or sound effects thinking the character is still far from the camera.
- Disabled fire damage for people who have water buckets and are actively firefighting + reduced the fire damage amount.
- When all resource visualization slots are "filled", villagers will transport to a random one instead of the first one found. This ensures less traffic jams for instance at the churchyard if all graves are "full" already.
- Firefighting villagers will now ignore anti-clogging behavior (waiting their turn at narrow pathfinding points).
- Added a "mourning period left" UI element in the residential panel to display how many days of mourning are left until the burgage plot can bring in more family members again.
- Added mourning icon to the building floater.
- Made sure mourning period is properly added to save data.
- After continuing the game after a victory the camera should go back to the player's main region instead of levitating over the map edge.
- [Experimental] Disabled the ability to quicksave during the game over / victory cinematic.
- Disabled the ability to manual save the game after being defeated & added a tooltip explaining why saves are disabled.
- Disabled quick save and autosave if game was lost.
- When ox gathers a log, it will prioritize immediately bringing it to the sawpit before bringing it to the logging camp unless construction reserve forbids it.
- Improved marketplace logistics efficiency and optimization.
- Tuned the AI retreat distances in an attempt to reduce how often its archers get into the loop of attack-retreat.
- Added the missing trading post building thumbnail.
- Minor unit in-town pathfinding updates.
- Swapped the old UE4 destructible system for a new, UE5 friendly, chaos based debris system. For now it's just used for chopped firewood cutter logs.
- Further tweaks to properly choose the right default AA/upscaler during the first time launch correctly for specific GPUs (e.g., RTX properly defaulting to DLSS).
- Added kings tax rate multiplier to the game setup settings.
- Due to mismatch in global market supply stock values, old saves (from builds 0.7.954-0.7.956) will have their market supply reset on loading.
- [Experimental] Due to changes in how food is consumed, a popup "Food consumed" may no longer appear if a building is selected while a food is being consumed from inventory.
- [Experimental] Made the sheep flock a bit more closely together to look more like a herd.

| Which casinos not on GamStop are worth trying today? Although countless platforms are available globally, not all are registered in the UK. Nevertheless, this list provides an excellent starting point if you’re ready to start playing or get back in the game after taking a short break. Casinos Not on Gamstop UK List of The Most Trusted Casinos Not on GamStop GamStop is designed to help people control their online gambling habits. When you sign up for services on this site, you’ll be prevented from using casinos and apps run by companies in Great Britain for however long you want. The GamStop process is operated by a not-for-profit company called The National Online Self-Exclusion Scheme Ltd. With GamStop, a request for self-exclusion is available to help people who have trouble controlling their online gambling habits. Players are encouraged to give GamStop their current address and postcodes, birthday, email addresses, and mobile numbers. After signing up for GamStop services, players receive an email confirmation of their registration. This message contains information about practical supports and tools that can help control gambling behaviors. Unfortunately, it takes about 24 hours to become effective for the entire self-exclusion process. If players have funds deposited at an online casino registered in the United Kingdom, a request to self-exclude doesn’t trigger an automatic return of withdrawable amounts. GamStop is not responsible for these funds. MyStake – Gambling Site not on GamStop with High Deposit Limits Reasons to Join MyStake: - not on GamStop

Or, you can jump straight to the live casino, where each game is hosted by real-life dealers. Rollino Casinos Commitment to Responsible Gambling The casino supports responsible gambling, but unfortunately, there was limited information available on their website. If you want to take a cooling-off period, you must contact support, but they have not listed any other ways in which they will support responsible gambling, which is disappointing. We are a little disappointed that live chat is not available for unregistered users. - Contact the merchant before starting the chargeback. Most credit card providers want to see if you’ve allowed them to correct the situation first. Please remember to document any phone calls you’ve had with the online casino. You include any email correspondence when filing your eventual request.
- Merchants pay a sizable fee if you win a chargeback dispute. It’s in the casino’s best interest to correct the issue.
- Tell the credit card provider everything that happened. Be factual and honest about the situation. If you don’t tell the complete truth, the chargeback ruling might not return in your favor.

Utrecht, Confederation Administrative Military Peacekeeping Zone Doorta (Former Kingdom of the Netherlands)
May 8, 1945
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Isa Visser
Holland. The land of tulips.
The land under eternal occupation.
My home.
When the Nazis came in 1940, my home town of Utrecht was turned upside down. The war was quick and I hardly even remembered it until the Wehrmacht began to strut freely in our town. At first, we did our best to ignore the grey troops in the streets. But eventually, the Jews of our town began to disappear without a trace.
I didn’t really think much of it, the rumours were horrendous but unfounded. I knew the Nazis preached something about anti-Semetism, but I never really thought anything of malice was happening to the Jews. Besides, the Germans were mean and pushy to all of us, shoving us along like prisoners or attacking us without reason.
Some collaborated with them, but most despised them. However, true anger arose once food began to fade from the shelves. Rationing was in full effect and Mama had to come up with new thinner recipes just for us to get by.
By the time 1943 rolled around, just when we thought that things couldn’t get worse, the Confederation came.
At first, it was some Allied and some Axis aircraft getting blown out of the sky by seemingly nothing. Then some astronomers kept on saying that there were a billion asteroids in the sky. Their estimates put many of them at the size of the Vatican! The world didn’t mind this developing situation as the Nazis tried everything they could to knock both Red Russia and the United Kingdom from the war.
Eventually, they landed, and the world was not prepared in the slightest for their arrival. They didn’t shell any of our cities, even though they could’ve turned all of them to dust in a flash. Not even that American ‘atom bomb’ project could’ve saved us, even if it was somehow made in time for their arrival.
Their troops swiftly subdued the superpowers in under a month. The Soviet Red Army, the American US Army, the British Royal Army, and the previously feared German Wehrmacht were no match for the very advanced and very coordinated men and machines of the Confederation. Sure, our tanks gave them a good scare just as much as the Russian rocket artillery, whistling bombs, and wailing Stukas, but those alone weren’t war-winning weapons.
The world surrendered in Versailles and the post-war world was negotiated in the places that the Allied Powers wanted to negotiate with each other. Yalta, Tehran, Cairo, and the Germans offered Magdeburg and Potsdam too for negotiations.
As it turned out, the Confederation didn’t want us dead or enslaved. Instead, they just wanted to occupy us and help us forward from our brutal wars. I couldn’t really blame them, but then again, their soldiers were the fearsome bullet-proof beasts that could, and had, brutally mutilated and even devoured human soldiers resisting.
Even with those setbacks, the total number of deaths in the Verrassingsoorlog only reached an impressive and scary 1 million. Never surpassing that compared to the nearly 50-60 million corpse pile the world was already stuck in.
Now, the Netherlands as a nation was disbanded. We were still Dutch through and through, and all humans still used the old borders to define land and places. But according to the dozen species entente that conquered us, we were now a hundred occupation zones with the ruling of each zone being distributed to what species got there and captured it first.
The Netherlands, as well as the rest of the Benelux, Northwestern Germany, Denmark, and Calais, were now a part of the ‘Doorta’ zone. Doorta. What a dumb name! The Nvouw in charge named it after the flowers and plant life of the region which made them nostalgic for their homes. There were some rumours that they’d give us our old names back, but that was just hope at this point.
“Isa! Can you quickly run down to Mr Achter’s store to get some butter? I need it for the cookies!”
“Ja, mam!” I called back, setting down the basket of eggs I was carrying. Mama was restocking her depleted goods from the morning rush. Now, she was making new foods for the afternoon rush. It was a very tight schedule that she somehow perfected with robotic efficiency and a warm smile that was the complement of every serving. Now that people had stable homes and jobs once more, they could now enjoy the wonders of life, like Mama’s cooking.
The Confederation weren’t really all that bad once the gunfire ceased. They stayed true to their word. They fixed our country’s buildings and roads, they brought peace and stability in a way, and on a personal note, they gave me a chance to learn Mama’s cooking with some real ingredients rather than some Fanta crap or vegetable peels.
But their soldiers patrolled our streets like hawks. The aliens seemed to best us in everything, hearing, strength, agility, speed, marksmanship, and overall better traits like fangs, venom, appendages, snouts, tails, frills, thorns, and many other animal-like characteristics. But the soldiers were nice and most of the time, didn’t care about us and just let me and my friends play tag. Goodness, some of Felshans even taught some of the boys war tactics while they played war games last week!
I quickly grabbed my late father’s old bulky satchel and patted my bunned-up hair as I walked back into the kitchen to see Mama zooming from baking pies to sizzling batters like a robot. Her eyes then fixed on me as her smile crested her white face, she quickly gave me a tight hug and handed me some guilders for my little expedition.
The Dutch guilder was worthless according to the aliens, who wanted us using their standardised tolija instead. Of course, no one cared and each nation still used their reichsmark, pound, ruble, peso, dollar, guilder, franc, or whatever they had before the first war even began.
I tightly hugged her back and kissed her cheek as she reciprocated the deed. Mama was the best mother one could have. She was loving, good at cooking, good at knitting, and calm and quiet. She would never shout unless I burned down a farm or something.
“Mmm!” I hummed smelling the apple pie from the oven. The warm and delicious apple smell mixed with the doughy batter simply created a scent that one could only find in heaven.
“Ask him for the butter from Rotterdam, the ones from Amsterdam don’t mix well with the cookie stuff like the chips, lemons, sugar, or—”
“I get it, Mama!” I punctuated her typical verbose lecture, shoving the guilders into my pocket. “Rotterdam butter.”
“Zeer goed,” she smiled. “Now off you go!”
Dashing out of the kitchen to the main café, I waved in greeting to some of the people already there. Most of them were either young people doing work, or old people playing chess. These were things you could do anywhere else, but the reason why they were here, was for the food and drinks.
“Where are you going, Isa?” the old Mr Maes asked me, looking up from his little thick novel. He was Flemish and was a veteran of the Great War. He served in the Somme, and Passchendaele, but mostly served in Belgium and Calais. The only answer he gave to me on why he was fighting in France proper was: “I was there to beat the Germans back on every front and every town from the Channel to Switzerland.”
“To get some butter from the store. That’s all,” I replied with a warm grin. I then slipped out of the store onto the lively streets as I dashed down the cobble roads towards Mr Achter’s place. Utrecht was still as bustling as it was before the war. I was born in 1934, so I knew the city well enough before the war to get around quickly.
Mr Achter’s store was down the street and left around the corner shop and then it was down a little incline at the end of the next street as a corner store of its own. I quickly zoomed across the road to the other sidewalk before I ran towards the corner of the street.
I didn’t think or register anything as I weaved through some people and snapped around the corner only to come into a collision trajectory with two shadows that blocked the sun. I couldn’t stop myself in time before a little gust of wind slapped me and now suddenly, the sun was hitting my face again.
Now, instead of ramming into huge shadows, I was on a collision course with a street pole. I braced for the surge of pain, but that also changed until I was frozen upright in under a second.
Reorienting from the random situation, I dizzily readjusted my focus only to now face-to-face with a Nvouw and a Felsha that eyed me up with composure. My blood ran cold, especially with the Nvouw present.
“Be more careful next time, ok?” the Felsha advised as my eyes fixed on him. They were scaled lizards that were as blue as the deep sea. They had snouts with at least 100 fangs just packed into there in such a scarily neat fashion. Their eyes were glowing aqua and they had little prongs and “D” shaped animal ears. Not to mention the bajillion thorns that were dawned on their backs like a cape of bee’s stingers.
Add that with the fact that they were a good two-and-a-half metres tall, and you got the perfect killing machine. But, regardless of their traits, they were probably the nicest of the two occupational species here. Which was a pretty low bar to pass anyway due to the evil of the other demon that I had also stupidly bumped into.
The Felsha soldier in front of me tilted his head and wagged his humongous tail in patience for a response from me. That’s another thing, their spiky tails were at least as long as Mama if she was horizontal. As if these things weren't deadly enough on their own.
“Y-yes,” I replied, a bit scared. “I-I’m sorry.”
“Aw, don’t worry,” the Nvouw replied for the Felsha as I snapped my head to meet him. “You’re just a kid, aren’t you? What are you out for?”
The Nvouw were the ones who occupied the Benelux first, arriving in their skyships randomly. I didn’t even know they were in the Benelux until they began to shepherd the surrendering Germans through the streets after they captured Utrecht. Some of them were covered with human blood. I didn’t know why until they spoke with each other, and then I could see blood covering their large main quadruple fangs and their smaller fangs too.
They ate the German soldiers.
Now, I didn’t like the Nazis, they were mean and tyrannical. But, they were still humans. Sometimes, they’d give me chocolate, sometimes they’d help me around, and sometimes they were understanding when I wanted to go out past curfew to buy some goods from the always-open Mr Achter. They were humans and they were merciful. But never, never, did I want to kill them. And never, never, never, never did I ever even think of wanting to eat them.
And yet, the Nvouw had done it and even enjoyed it. They mowed through many German squads before the garrison here even knew it. By that point, it was too late and they surrendered to the Nvouw, who could just zip up to them and tear them apart in a second if they wanted.
As a result, it was the Nvouw that I feared the most. They weren’t the reason for anything bad in my life, but the first impression I got of them was one of them being merciless brutes and man-eaters. My fear of them is probably why my mouth was zipped shut and I looked down to the ground in terror, resisting the urge to whimper.
My face was hot like the sun above and my hands fidgeted behind me as I simply puckered my mouth and faced the floor. I didn’t want to be in such a predicament. Maybe if I went slower, I wouldn’t be here. But now here I was, and I wanted to disappear in a snap so I could escape these soldiers.
“What are you out for?” the Nvouw repeated to no avail as I did my best to resist crying. My body went into a million different scenarios of how this would end. It could gut me here! If I tried to run, it’d just do it quicker.
“Citizen, I will not repeat myself,” the Nvouw asked once more with agitation. It seems that this beast had a chip on his shoulder for insubordination. But then again, maybe it was just me as I began to hyperventilate, more tears pushing against my eyes and probably making them bulge.
Not even the strongest dike could hold the deluge ready.
When the Nvouw came, Mama hid me in the house. Every time we left the café she brought me with her. I couldn’t be alone. She always kept my head pressed against her and she hugged me until we reached wherever we wanted to go. She did all the talking when the Nvouw would stop us for ID or just to converse. I never wanted to be face-to-face with one, and even worse, I wasn’t ready.
“Answer me,” the Nvouw asked again with its tentacles fluttering in annoyance.
Their tentacles obstructed their fangs and powerful teeth. But, if they just pulled up their tentacles, you could see every gut-cutting fang in their mouth. I didn’t reply and this only seemed to agitate the Nvouw as it hissed with its fangs. Those pristine white teeth were the ones that cut through the Germans like paper. Those were the incarnates of suffering themselves. Those damned fangs.
With that, I couldn’t help myself as a little sob escaped me and tears rolled down my cheeks in small amounts before more flowed. I did my best to suppress my sobs, but that was like trying to hold back the whole English Channel with a table for cover. So to the beasts, it probably sounded like I was gasping for air like a drowning human while also screaming for help.
The Felsha stared at me with concern and realisation before it rose from its squatting position and turned to the monster it called an ally. After whispering something more akin to garbling than Russian like my mother had compared it too, the Nvouw sighed and walked off to the side with its big bulky rifle unshouldered and resting in its talons.
“Look, I’m—,” the Felsha squatted again. But this time, he used the blunt edge of his claws to push my head up to meet his. His eyes were glowing with concern as he looked over my reddening and teary face with pity, “I’m sorry about that. I know that they weren’t the most docile when they occupied this land. But don’t worry, we won’t hurt you ever. Am I clear?”
“Y-yes, sir,” I mewled.
I was assessed once more by the concerned Felsha before he nodded and moved out of my way. I broke into a trot, then a speed-walk, and then a wild dash until I reached my destination. I looked back momentarily to see both creatures staring at me before the Felsha snapped its head to its monstrous comrade and conversed with him.
How anyone thought those creatures were friendly was beyond me. Call any of the Confederation species docile and I’d agree, except the Nvouw.
I quickly jumped into Mr Achter’s shop through the push door, stumbling around before regaining my footing. The store was as old as Mr Achter himself, being made in the 1870s. The shelves were wooden and antique. The products, however, were new and fresh.
“Woah, Ms Visser,” the old Mr Achter gasped at my haggard and eccentric demeanour. “What snake bit you?”
Mr Achter was an old man, in his seventies and was bald on the top with hair on his sides. He wore round professor’s glasses and always wore a pale blue-checkered jacket with a red tie and white undershirt. He always had a pipe in his mouth and yet his teeth were somehow always bright white and as clean as the rest of his shop.
“N-nothing, Mr Achter,” I wheezed. “Just the usual sticks of Rotterdam butter for Mama please.”
“M-hmmm,” he scanned me suspiciously. “Was it something to do with the soldiers?”
He was good. I never understood how he did it anyway. He did raise three sons, but two of them died in World War I and the other died of malaria in the Congo on a trip. I guess his fatherly instincts kicked in once he saw my trance.
“Y-yes,” I replied hoarsely.
“Did they do anything to you?”
“N-no,” I shook my head. “It’s just . . . one of them was a Nvouw and—”
“Oh!” Mr Achter exclaimed, slapping his palm to his forehead in realisation. “Oh, don’t worry. I understand, yes. They scare me too.”
Mr Achter brought out about three bars of butter, the usual amount I ordered, and I pulled out the guilders to pay him. Except, I was three guilders short.
“W-what?” I tensed up in shock. “I-I had all of them . . . How . . . ?”
Then it clicked. I must’ve dropped it in my hurried escape from the soldiers. Now I was short on cash and couldn’t even purchase the ingredient I had encountered a Nvouw for. My body burned hot with rage until it just boiled over and I slumped my shoulders in exhaustion and misery.
“Don’t worry,” Mr Acther smiled sombrely. “You can take it anyway. I’ll take what you have.”
“T-thanks, Mr Achter,” I sniffled. This day was nothing but hell for me.
Mr Acther looked at me with concern before puffing a smoke cloud from his pipe and leaning back into his seat at the cashier desk, “Occupation is a weird thing.” He hummed.
This was how he started a lecture, with an unconfirmed claim. He’d state his claim as more a question and have me try and fill in the gaps. To be honest, I thought it was patronising. But then again, it worked wonders. He always got his point across in the most clear ways possible.
“In what way?” I replied with a small grin.
“You have one power conquer the land of the other. And then, they decide to keep that land until the end of the war or even after. Sounds normal right?”
“Right,” I replied with a nod.
“But, sometimes the occupying power wants to stay. When they do, it’s usually either for strategic reasons . . . or for something else.”
“What?” I pestered impatiently.
“Guess,” Mr Achter coaxed.
“To make it a part of their nation?”
“Good!” Mr Achter jumped before putting his hand to his chin in fake thinking. “What should they do to accomplish that?”
“Just make it formal in a treaty,” I shrugged nonchalantly.
“Well . . . yes,” Mr Achter replied with a bit of lost energy. “But once something small is a part of another bigger thing that is much more different to it. What do you think that smaller something would do?”
“Assimilate?”
“Yes!” Mr Achter congratulated me with a rejuvenated spirit. “But what happens when you move to a new culture where another one is?”
“You force it out,” I replied in realisation.
“But if the people don’t want to?” Mr Achter pushed.
“You force them too.”
“By?”
“Intimidation,” I replied blankly, finally understanding the concept.
“Excellent,” Mr Achter snapped his fingers in delight at my response before handing me the butter to stuff into my rucksack. “That’s what we never want. They will try and intimidate us into listening. But never fold. We are Dutch through and through. Nothing will change that.”
“Thank you, Mr Achter,” I smiled politely as he waved me off.
“Alright, go on. Your mother’s cookies can’t bake themselves.”
I stopped walking in an instant. I never told him she was making her afternoon cookies, “How do you know they’re cookies?” I turned to him in shock.
“You really think I can’t tell my own butter in her cookies?” Mr Achter cackled. “Don’t be a fool. I know something’s mine when it’s good. I give the good-tasting ingredients and your mom turns them into even better-tasting food. Now run off before I ask for a discount.”
I laughed and dashed out of the store with a happy energy that was stolen from me earlier. I didn’t have to fear the Nvouw, not anyone! I was human and Dutch. Nothing could ever change that!
Running up the road again, I slowed down around the corner and peeked out. No one was there, so I turned and ran up the rest of the way to Mama’s café. Bashing through the spruce door into the kitchen like a tank as I put the rucksack down on the floor and took the butter out.
Mama’s head snapped my way in surprise before it warmed up to a smile, “Be careful!” she hissed playfully. “You almost made me burn the pies!”
“Sorry,” I hummed, handing her the butter.
I probably would’ve stayed to help, but a knock at our house door drew me away from the kitchen. Our house was behind the shop and so there were two doors that were used. The main door for all the customers, and the backdoor for me and Mama.
Only the mailman or milkman used the backdoor to deliver items. Except the milkman doesn’t come until tomorrow and the newsboy comes in the morning as well as the mailman. So whoever was at the door was clearly someone random.
I reached the door and turned the knob, the door creaked open and I looked outside to see a boy. Upon seeing him, a sudden odour forced me back a bit in shock.
The boy was thin and looked frail, even though he also seemed just as old as me. His face was pallid and sickly and his clothes were tattered and torn, like he had just swam across the Atlantic from America. His hair was unkempt and overgrown like an abandoned garden.
To my disgust, he was also barefoot and his legs looked bruised and cut. His arms were exposed by the ripped shirt except for a hastily bandaged part of his lower left arm. His eyes were a murky blue and his lips were cut and as dirt-covered as the rest of his face.
“What’s your name?” I asked the boy. Looking him over with contempt at his haggard apparel.
“B-brutus,” he replied hoarsely, tugging at his torn shirt.
“Really?” I scoffed. “That is not your name.”
“J-Johann. . .” he mumbled.
“Johann what?” I pestered him with impatience, tapping my foot in anger.
“I don’t know,” he replied in broken Dutch, rubbing his bandaged arm anxiously. “I-I forgot.”
“Forgot?” I hissed before giving a hearty sigh. “Alright, Johann, that first name doesn’t even sound Dutch. Where are you from?”
“U-uh . . . G-germany.”
How unspecific! Might as well have just told me ‘Earth’. Why was he so meek and secretive? Maybe he was a challenged boy. How did his parents let him wander like this? Also, his accent was so Eastern European that I could smell the borscht. Metaphorically of course, he smelled more like cow manure than a bowl of borscht. There is no way he thought he was really fooling me.
“Right . . .” I trailed off with suspicion of the boy’s intent. “Where are your parents?”
He seemed to tense up at the simple question. I was now concerned for this boy, but I also didn’t want to trust him at all. He was dirty, spoke Dutch poorly, was secretive, and probably addicted to something that would bring us trouble.
“G-gone,” he stuttered. “I-I lost Mama a while back. Then I was sent away.”
“From where?” I huffed.
“I-I don’t know . . . Some place that began with an A.”
“An ‘a’?” I raised a brow at the boy. I really didn’t like him, but then again. He was cold and hungry. The least I could do was give him some basic necessities before I sent him off to be someone else's problem.
“Who’s at the door, Isa?” Mama called from the kitchen. She then peeked out and her eyes fixed on the boy. “Who’s that?”
“Brutus,” I sighed, looking at him with disgust.
“Where are your parents?” Mama hollered to the boy over the sizzling pots and pans.
“He said they were gone,” I replied to the boy. When I looked back at him, his mouth was literally watering. I backed away a tad bit in disgust as the boy’s eyes fixed back on me.
“S-sorry . . . I just haven’t eaten for a bit and . . . your mom’s cooking is what brought me here really,” the boy mumbled in embarrassment. Since he seemed to deserve something to eat to make up for his crappy appearance, I decided to turn back to a concerned Mama
“Mama!” I called out.
“Yes!?” she called back, now seeing the boy in all of his dirty glory.
“The boy is hungry. Can we give him some food before we let him go?” I asked.
“Sure,” she replied, her face puckered up at the sight of the boy. I couldn’t blame her for that really. “On second thought . . . he needs a shower . . . and a new set of clothes first. Isa, take him up to my room and have him wait there. I’ll finish the batches here.”
I really didn’t want to be in the same room as this smelly boy, but I didn’t have many other options. Besides, I kind of felt bad for his situation, even if his personal specifics and identity were just a load of poorly made lies.
“C’mon,” I sighed. “Let’s go.”
The boy’s eyes lit up as I led him up the winding steps to the second floor. I skipped my room and pushed open the spruce door to Mama’s as the boy walked in and sat on the ground.
“Nice house,” he hummed to my concern. I was now pretty sure this kid wanted to steal from us.
“Y-yes . . . it is,” I replied slowly, squinting at the dirty boy with contempt at his appearance and his ulterior motive for being here.
Unless I wanted to contract a disease, I wasn’t going anywhere near him. This kid was more of a biological disaster than an actual living being. I found myself subconsciously drifting away from the putrid kid, but since I didn’t trust him alone, there I remained. It was a long while of miserable waiting before anyone spoke again.
“Your m-mom is g-good at c-cooking,” the boy complimented sheepishly from his sedentary pose on the wood floor.
“Yeah, her café is popular for a reason,” I sighed, pinching my nose in disgust at the lingering smell.
“My mom owned a flower shop,” the boy reminisced as I just sneered at him. “It was a beautiful one, the best in all of Wa–” The boy stopped as if he had just said too much.
“What?” I pestered with a bit of jumpiness at the information that he had mistakenly donated.
“Westphalia,” he corrected in a choppy manner as if he had just pulled the name from his rear.
“Uh-huh,” I scoffed. “What next? She fed you schnitzels and swastikas every day?”
“I’m not a Nazi,” he grumbled at me with some pent-up anger. “Those are the worst people to ever walk this earth.”
“A bit odd from a German,” I hummed, tiling my head in a sarcastic show of curiosity. “I expected you all to be the same. Unless if you weren’t a German.”
“I am German,” the boy replied adamantly.
“So you are a Nazi?”
“No!” he shouted. “I am German.”
“A Na-zi!” I mocked.
“Przeklęty!” he retorted before shutting up and clasping his mouth with wide-open eyes.
“See,” I giggled. “Not German.”
“Part-German,” he grumbled with his head down.
“Changing your story again?” I hissed, stamping the floor. “Just tell me the truth.”
“It is the truth.”
“That isn’t the truth, Mr ‘Johann’!”
“Well, my name is just as Germanic as yours,” he hissed. “That’s because . . . What’s your name?” the boy bleated.
“Hitler,” I sighed with a little smirk. If he was going to play around with his identity, then who cared if I did? “Do you believe me?”
“No,” the boy replied with a hiss.
“Then why should I? You are no ‘Johann’ because I can hear and taste the pierogi and borscht in your accent. Don’t think you’ll fool me with some German-sounding name.”
The boy opened his mouth to respond, but it was hushed when Mama came upstairs in her food-stained apron as her eyes fixed on the boy more clearly. Now she could see his haggard state in the sunlight from the window, like some sort of bad impression of an angel.
“Oh, God,” she practically mouthed as she stared at “Johann”. He pretty much looked at her with the most fear I’d seen yet. That’s one thing I could trust about him, his fear was raw.
Mama said nothing, simply walking into her room past the boy and opening one of her wardrobe’s drawers where she pulled out some of my old clothes. Due to the boy’s skinny frame, he’d fit in that old farm wear like a glove.
“Isa, leave for now. I’ll fix him up,” Mama ordered with a serious face before giving a little smile. “Unless you want to shower him with me?”
“What!? Ew!” I kicked, finally stumbling out of the room far enough to not smell the boy. Mama simply laughed and the boy tensed up in embarrassment. That was the last I saw of the two before Mama shut the door.
To be honest, this day just kept on getting weirder and weirder. First, I nearly soiled myself in front of a Nvouw. Second, I was three guilders short when I went to buy butter. Finally, some odd kid who couldn’t seem to lie properly and who smelled like he just crawled out of a garbage pit appeared at our door for no good reason other than he smelled Mama’s cooking! The Nvouw encounter was scary, but that kid was just weird.
But I didn’t let that bother me, I was now free to play in the little fields behind our house. Those fields were wild and led to forests. We lived on the outskirts of Utrecht anyway, rarely going downtown. That stuff was only for expensive shopping, not day-to-day errands.
Running out the same back door that the dirty kid had used, I dashed into the field of tall grass. Eventually, I found a little wild tulip, swaying in the wind.
It was beautiful. The symbol of our people. The red pedals bounced around in the wind freely, taking hit after hit from the soft blows of nature. I got down on my belly in front of it and watched it for a bit as it swayed and bounced, swayed and bounced. Inhaling a whiff of it, I smiled and rolled onto my back facing the skies.
They were blue and open, not tainted by low white clouds or the occasional spacecraft, the only thing puncturing the darkening blue sky were some high strips of clouds way up in the atmosphere.
The Netherlands was my home, and these sights are why Mr Achter’s lecture was so useful.
My job wasn’t to just be proud of my little Holland, it was to defend and preserve her beauty.
And I would do anything to keep my serene life here as free as possible.

2024.05.09 02:12 NotYourFathersEdits Opinions about keeping emergency fund on/off budget?
Hello!
I'm having a little friction right now between YNAB and the reality it's capturing while I decide where to park my emergency fund.
I currently have my emergency fund as a category in YNAB, and the funds themselves are in an on-budget HYSA. This is the way I've gathered that YNAB is supposed to work best.
I've recently decided to move these funds from my HYSA to an account with my brokerage, Fidelity. A temporary HYSA interest rate expired, and I would like to get the higher "interest" rate and state tax exemption of a treasury-only MMF. For those of you who use MMFs, you'll know that they're as liquid as cash. (The lack of sync because of the Akoya drama is annoying, but I manage on-budget accounts with Fidelity manually in YNAB.)
The issue is that choosing which of my accounts at Fidelity to park this money influences whether or not I can keep it on budget in YNAB. I have an account at Fidelity that's on budget. We'll call that my checking account equivalent. I have another account with some long term cash savings that I keep off-budget in a tracking account, instead, for a few reasons that probably aren't relevant to this post. We can call that a savings account equivalent. (One more trivial reason is that it largely contains treasuries that I don't want to consider as liquid cash. There are other reasons. I do intend to bring it on budget next year, since short-term treasuries are super liquid anyway, but it would be a royal pain to do right now.)
Anyhow, I would very much like to just keep the money in the on-budget account, so I can keep my emergency fund where it is in my budget and continue using YNAB as intended. After all, we all know it doesn't matter where the money actually lives, right? Well, mostly, but not quite—that's only true if both accounts are on budget. The problem is that I'd have a much larger sum of money in my "checking" account if I did this, and it's connected to a debit card and ACH for my rent payment. From a security standpoint, I'd way rather have it in the "savings" account that's currently off-budget.
Does it seem like a cardinal sin to keep the emergency fund off the budget and instead in a tracked account? Are there any ways this could be limiting?

2024.05.07 05:25 NoisyBiologics Alamo doesn't care if employees steal from customers?
I'd like to tell you the true story of my experience with Alamo car rental at MEM.
We (my wife and I) were in Memphis as the base for our trip to see the 2024 eclipse. We intended to drive into Arkansas on Monday, April 8th.
We were given a Jeep at Alamo the airport.
We got up early the next morning to be sure to beat most of the traffic heading in the same direction. We stopped at a McDonald's to grab a little breakfast. After we got our order we drove across the street to an empty parking to eat what we'd bought from McD's. As we were eating, we noticed we were about 50 feet from an ATM- which was fortuitous because we'd give almost all of our cash out as tips and to homeless guys the day before. We got $200 from the ATM and were a little surprised that it was all in 10-dollar bills (not relevant to the story, sorry).
I put the cash in the little depression just forward of the shift lever. My wife put her phone on top of the cash.
After we finished eating, we took off for Arkansas. Unfortunately, within a block we got a warning indicator and an accompanying chime. The wife looked in the manual and found it was something that had to be taken care of immediately. We called Alamo's roadside assistance and they asked if we could get the Jeep back to the airport. That worked for us so we brought it there.
When we got to the rental car return area, we scrambled to get out backpacks and suitcases out of the back of the Jeep and loaded them into our newly-assigned vehicle (Mitsubishi Out-something). The exchange went better than we expected. We headed out to the the booth and were ready to go when my wife asked if I had picked up our $200 ATM cash.
I did a quick check - as did she - and neither of us had picked it up. We told the lady in the booth what had happened and she directed us back to the entrance to the drop-off area.
When we got there, the same person (I'll call him Gentleman #1) who had swapped our car was there. We told him what happened and he said, "All I did was move it from here over to there." I thought that an odd thing to say but we continued to find the Jeep. We searched the Jeep and the cash we had left about 10 minutes before was not there.
Gentleman #1 repeated his assertion that " All I did was move it from here over to there." I asked him if there was someplace I could report this loss. He hemmed and hawed a bit but eventually said I could talk to the guy at the desk.
I walked over to the desk (the one just outside the rental area doors) and told gentleman #2 the story of the missing $200. He hemmed and hawed a bit but eventually said we should go and take ANOTHER look in the Jeep to see if it was there.
We started toward the area where our car(s) were when we heard Gentleman #1 yelling. He was saying that he had found our cash and that it must have fallen onto the floor.
My wife later told me that, while I was getting the suitcases from the rear hatch, she was getting our backpacks from the back seat and that Gentleman #1 was in the front seat, he reach back between the seats and handed my wife her phone. That was the phone that had been sitting on top of the cash.
On hearing that news from Gentleman #1, Gentleman #2 grabbed my elbow and said I'd "better give that man a tip." He also offered that I should give him a tip as well. Since we had already been delayed and eclipses don't wait for anybody, I gave Gentleman #2 $10 and Gentleman #1 $20. It took a while to spit out all the bile but we eventually made it to our destination (the eclipse was awesome in Arkansas!).
Just to be clear, Gentleman #1 - in the front seat - took my wife's phone off the pile of 10's and handed it to here through the gap between the front seat, blocking her view of the front. He waited to see if it registered with her that the cash was there - but it didn't because we were scrambling to get going to the eclipse. When he saw it was ok, he pocketed the cash.
I've since contacted Alamo several times about what happened and get no response (except from their Support Desk who forwarded my email to...somebody).
You can imagine what kind of impression I got about Alamo.
Forewarned is forearmed my fellow travelers.

2024.05.06 15:33 Leather_Focus_6535 The 113 inmates executed by Virginia in the post Furman era and their crimes (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk) [part 2, cases 59-113]
This is part 2 of my list for Virginia's post Furman execution roster. As mentioned in part 1's opening paragraph, character count limitations forced me into splitting my Virginia's execution roster into two separate posts.
For the link to part 1, please click here. 59. Kevin Cardwell (1991-1998, lethal injection): Cardwell intercepted Anthony Brown, a 15 year old drug carrier, while he was at a bus stop. He lured Brown into his apartment and searched his belongings for any drugs. Brown was then dragged into the woods, shot to death, and stripped of the cocaine strapped to his legs.

Originally, Wilkey was part of a conspiracy to seduce and marry a young woman in order to kill her for an insurance policy, but backed out when he genuinely fell in love with the would be victim. He was tricked into going on a hunting trip with Fisher and shot to death by him. Fisher had 25 previous criminal convictions and was involved with organized crime. He was in the witness protection program at the time of Wilkey’s murder.
64. Carl Chichester (1991-1999, lethal injection): During a holdup of a Little Caesars, Chichester shot and killed the manager, 30 year old Timothy Rigney, for refusing to open the cash register. He and his two accomplices ran off with a total of $110.

75. Steve Roach (1993-2000, lethal injection): Roach shot and killed 70 year old Mary Hughes on her doorstep and stole her credit card. He was caught on tape trying to use Hughes' stolen cards to pull money out of an ATM machine in North Carolina.

They shot and killed the owner Lam Van Son, a 41 year old Vietnamese refugee, a waitress, 31 year old Karen Rounds, two other employees, 31 year old Karen Rounds and 32 year old Wendell Parish Jr., and a customer Abdelaziz Gren, a 34 year old Moroccan immigrant, and took $400 in cash from the register. Van Son’s 3 year old son was sleeping in the backroom during the attack, but the couple left him unharmed.
78. Russel Burket (1993-2000, lethal injection): Burket snuck into the home of 30 year old Katherine Tafelski while her Navy SEALs husband was deployed overseas, and sexually assaulted her. Katherine and her 5 year old daughter Ashley were both beaten to death with a "rusty" crowbar.
79. Derek Barnabei (1993-2000, lethal injection): Barnabei seduced a fellow Old Dominion University student, 17 year old Sarah Wisnosky, into a relationship with him and kidnapped her. She was raped, partially strangled, beaten to death with a hammer, and dumped into a river near campus grounds. Due to him being of Italian ancestry, his death sentence and execution sparked outrage in Italy.
80. Bobby Ramdass (1992-2000, lethal injection): Ramdass was condemned for the shooting death of Mohammed Kayani, a 34 year old Pakistani immigrant working as a clerk, during a convenience store robbery. He also shot dead 19 year old Darrell Ferguson in an alley and wounded a cab driver in other robberies.
81. Christopher Goins (1994-2000, lethal injection): Goins broke into the home of his 14 year old girlfriend (who was 7 months pregnant with his child). He shot and killed her parents, 35 year old James and 29 year old Daphne Jones, and her siblings, 9 year old Nicole and 4 year old David. The girlfriend and her youngest sibling, 21 month old Kenya, were also shot in the attack. Both of them survived, but the unborn child was lost in the shooting.
82. Thomas Akers (1998-2001, lethal injection): Akers and his accomplice were driving with their friend, 24 year old Wesley Smith. When they pulled over on a road to urinate, they pounced on Smith. In the attack, he was strangled with a belt and beaten to death with a baseball bat. They pair then grabbed $200 from his wallet and dumped his body in a creek. While on death row, Akers demanded his execution and made threats against the judge who sentenced him if it wasn't carried out.
83. Christopher Beck (1995-2001, lethal injection): Out of anger for being fired, Beck invaded the house of his former employer, 52 year old William Miller. He waited for him and his two roommates, 54 year old Florence Marks and 34 year old David Kaplan, to return home and shot and stabbed them all to death. Marks was also raped in the attack. Although Beck claimed that he "only" staged a sexual assault on her, a medical examination confirmed that she was abused in that manner. Beck stole several guns, bicycles, and money in the robbery.
84. James Patterson (1987-2002, lethal injection): Patterson held his friend's mother, 56 year old Joyce Aldridge, in her home at knifepoint. Enraged that she only had a few coins in her purse, he raped Aldridge, stabbed her 3 times, and left her to die. When Aldridge managed to crawl to a phone to call her son for help, Patterson returned and stabbed her 14 more times. Although Aldridge's murder was left unsolved for years, Patterson was later imprisoned for raping an 18 year old girl, and DNA found at the murder was traced to his samples filed in the inmate database in 2000.
85. Daniel Zirkle (1999-2002, lethal injection): Zirkle's girlfriend broke off their relationship due to his violent behavior and filed protective orders against him. He was arrested for violating them and sentenced to a few months in jail. After his release, Zirkle went to his ex girlfriend's home without her permission to visit their daughter, 4 year old Christina. However, the ex girlfriend's other daughter, 14 year old Jessica Shifflett, blocked him from coming inside. He stabbed her to death and kidnapped Christina. He then drove Christina to the George Washington National Forest, slit her throat, and stabbed himself in a failed suicide attempt.
86. Walter Mickens Jr. (~1974-2002, lethal injection): Mickens ambushed and sodomized 17 year old Timothy Hall, and stabbed him 143 times. He stripped the boy of nearly all of his clothing, and left him to die in an abandoned apartment. A long time sexual predator and career criminal, Mickens had several robbery and sodomy convictions dating back to the 70s. One of his previous incidents involved breaking into an elementary school, and coercing a teacher of her purse by threatening the life of a 7 year old student. He also had a conviction for sexually assaulting a cellmate.
87. Aimal Kasi (1993-2002, lethal injection): In his efforts to fight against American foreign policy regarding Islamic nations, Kasi attacked the Langley CIA headquarters with a Type 56 assault rifle. He shot dead 2 CIA employees, 66 year old Lansing Bennett and 28 year old Frank Darling, and wounded 3 others. Kasi then fled to Afghanistan, but was lured into his native Pakistan to be captured in a joint FBI-CIA led operation, and extradited back to the United States to face trial.
88. Earl Bramblett (~1970s(?)-2003, electric chair): Bramblett had molested 11 year old Winter Hodges and feared that her parents, 41 year old William and 37 year old Teresa, were planning on reporting him to the police. In an attempt to prevent that from happening, he attacked the family in their home. Teresa was strangled, while William, Winter, and another daughter, 3 year old Anah, were shot dead. Bramblett then set the house on fire to destroy any evidence of the murders. He had several abuse allegations and was also suspected in the 1977 disappearances of two 14 year old girls, Tammy Akers and Angela Rader, that worked for him, but was never charged for any of them.
89. Bobby Swisher (1997-2003, lethal injection): Swisher abducted 22 year old Dawn Snyder from her flower shop at knife point and raped her. He slashed Snyder's throat and dumped her into a nearby river. Despite managing to swim back to shore, Snyder succumbed to her injuries on the river bank.
90. Brian Cherrix (1994-2004, lethal injection): Cherrix ambushed 23 year old Tessa Van Hart while she was trying to deliver a pizza. He sodomized and shot Van Hart twice in the head, and left the body in her car. The crime was left unsolved until Cherrix was arrested for shooting and wounded his brother two years later. In an attempt to secure leniency, Cherrix disclosed some details of Van Hart's murder, but tried pinning it on a deceased cousin. He only confessed when investigators learned that the cousin couldn't have possibly done it.
91. Dennis Orbe (1998-2004, lethal injection): Orbe fatally shot Richard Burnett, a 39 year old clerk, while robbing a grocery store, and seized $90 from the register.
92. Mark Bailey (1998-2004, lethal injection): Bailey shot and killed his wife, 22 year old Katherine, and their 2 year old son, Nathan, while they were laying in bed. He claimed to investigators that the murders were done out of anger for Katherine's alleged infidelity.

James Hudson (2002-2004, lethal injection): In a feud over a driveway, Hudson broke into the home of the Cole family (consisting of brothers, 64 year old Thomas and 56 year old Walter, and Thomas' wife, 64 year old Patsy) to confront them with a shotgun. He shot all three of the Coles dead and drove away from the scene. Hudson was captured after nearly a day long manhunt.
94. James Reid (1996-2004, lethal injection): Reid stabbed 87 year old Annie Lester 22 times with a pair of scissors, beat her with a can of milk, and strangled her with the cord of a heating pad. He left the body in her bedroom and fled her house. Although the evidence for his guilt was overwhelming (which included the blood on his clothes matched Lester's DNA, several of his fingerprints were discovered on the murder weapons, samples of his saliva were found on a cigarette butt in her house, and his handwriting was identical to the writing of a death threat sent to Lester), Reid's death sentence and execution was contested on the grounds of him allegedly having brain damage from a car accident, seizures, and alcoholism. The motivations behind Lester's murder remain unknown, but prosecutors suspected that it might have been part of a bungled robbery or rape attempt.
95. Dexter Vinson (1997-2006, lethal injection): Vinson attacked his ex girlfriend, 25 year old Angela Felton, near her home. Felton tried to escape by driving away, but he rammed her car with his, and forced her inside it. She was then dragged into a vacant house, raped, beaten, and stabbed in the face, neck, arms, buttocks, stomach, and vagina. The body was left in the house as Vinson fled the scene.
96. Brandon Hedrick (1997-2006, electric chair): Hendrick kidnapped a sex worker, 23 year old Lisa Crider, while he was cruising for prostitutes. Initially, Crider and Hendrick had engaged in paid consensual relations, but the situation turned violent when he robbed her of $50 at gunpoint. She was then raped, shot in the face, and dumped into a river.
97. Michael Lenz (~1990s-2006, lethal injection): While serving 29 years for a burglary and weapons possession conviction, Lenz stabbed a fellow inmate, 41 year old Brent Parker, to death. Both were part of a Nordic Neopaganism sect, and the killing was committed over Parker allegedly not expressing enough devotion to their deities. Parker was serving a life sentence for killing a friend during a drunken rage at the time of his own murder.
98. John Schmitt (1999-2006, lethal injection): During a holdup of a bank, Schmitt shot and killed the guard, 39 year old Shelton Dunning, and took $35,000 from the vaults.
99. Kevin Green (1998-2008, lethal injection): Green and his teenage nephew stormed a convenience store, and forced the owners, 68 year old Lawrence Vaughan and his wife, 53 year old Patricia, to hand over $9,000 in cash. They then shot the couple, killing Patricia and wounding Lawrence.
100. Robert Yarbrough (1997-2008, lethal injection): Yarbrough and his accomplice tied up 77 year old Cyril Hamby while robbing his grocery store. They subjected Hamby to beatings and nearly decapitated him with a pocket knife. The pair then stole beer, wine, cigarettes, and an undisclosed amount of money.
101. Kent Jackson (2000-2008, lethal injection): Jackson and an accomplice attacked 79 year old Beulah Kaiser in her apartment, and raped her. She was stabbed several times in the neck, beaten, and her cane was shoved down her throat after she was anally penetrated with it. A cigarette butt found at the crime scene was traced to the pair.
102. Christopher Emmett (2001-2008, lethal injection): Emmett was staying at a motel room with a coworker, 43 year old John Langley, while they were working on an out of town roofing job. The pair played cards until Langley went to bed. As he slept, Emmett bludgeoned him to death with a lamp, and stole $100 from his wallet. He used the stolen money to buy crack cocaine.
103. Edward Bell (~1990s-2008, lethal injection): While running away from officers trying to arrest him for a parole violation, Bell shot and killed one of his pursers, 32 year old Sergeant Ricky Timbrook. Bell had a long criminal record, which included several felony and misdemeanor convictions of assault, burglary, carrying conceal weapons, and was found to have stolen a car during the investigations of Timbrook's murder.
104. John Muhammad (~1999-2008, lethal injection): The so called “D.C. Sniper”, Muhammad shot and killed 17 random people between the ages of 21-76 with the help of a teenage accomplice in mostly sniper attacks. The killings took place in the national capital, hence the epithet, and across several states. Due to his affiliation with the Nation of Islam and the accomplice’s accounts of planning terrorist attacks and training camps, Muhammad’s murder spree are often considered to be acts of Islamic extremism in the media. However, experts believe that his real intentions was to kill his estranged wife using the sniper attacks as a mask. Muhammad had a long history of domestic violence, and had abducted his children from his estranged wife on numerous occasions. His accomplice had also accused him of sexual abuse a few years after his execution.
105. Larry Elliott (2001-2008, electric chair): Elliott, a former military counterintelligence agent, was in an online "sugar daddy" relationship with a much younger woman. At the woman's request, Elliott sent her over $450,000, which she used to pay for a home, credit card, car, breast enhancement surgery, and enrolling her children in a private school. The woman was also involved with a bitter custody dispute with her children's father, 30 year old Robert Finch. In an attempt to win the woman's devotion, Elliott shot and killed Finch in his home, and beat Finch's girlfriend, 25 year old Dana Thrall, to death with the butt of his gun.
106. Paul Powell (1999-2010, electric chair): Angry that his friend, 16 year old Stacie Reed, was in an interracial relationship, Powell made an attempt to rape her in her home. When she fought back, Powell stabbed her to death. He also tied up Stacie's 14 year old sister to be raped, stabbed, and strangled, and left the girl to die in the family's basement. The sister managed to survive with the timely arrival of their stepfather, who called the police and the paramedics to the scene. On the mistaken belief that the death penalty was off the table, Powell sent letters flaunting the lewd details of the murder to taunt the prosecutors, judge, and the victims’ family.
107. Darick Walker (~1996-2010, lethal injection): In 1996, Walker walked up to the door of 36 year old Stanley Beale, and angrily accused him of showing up at his home despite the fact that they were complete strangers. He then shot Beale dead in front of his children and girlfriend, and ran away from the scene. A year later, Walker forced himself into an apartment, and shot 34 year old Clarence Threat seven times while he was laying in bed with his girlfriend. Walker had a history of violence and frequently stole from his friends and family. In one reported incident, he kicked the stomach of a pregnant woman in an act of rage.
108. Teresa Lewis (2002-2010, lethal injection): Lewis conspired with two men that she had a sexual relationship with to kill her husband, 51 year old Julian, and her stepson, 25 year old Charles. Charles was about to be deployed to participate in the then upcoming invasion of Iraq, which gave him a $250,000 life insurance policy that Lewis wanted to collect from both him and his father. She let her accomplices inside their trailer, and shot Julian and Charles while they were sleeping. Charles was killed immediately, while Julian, who witnessed Lewis pay the attackers, survived long enough to notify the responders of his wife's involvement.
109. Jerry Jackson (2001-2011, lethal injection): Jackson broke into the apartment of 88 year old Ruth Phillips, and woke her up while he was rummaging through her room. Despite Phillips' pleas for her life, Jackson raped her and suffocated her to death with a pillow. He stole her car and a total of $60 in the break in, and spent the stolen money on marijuana.
110. Robert Gleason (2007+(?)-2013, electric chair): In 2007, Gleason shot and killed 54 year old Michael Jamerson, in order to prevent him from testifying about his drug trafficking activities, and was given a life sentence for the murder. While incarcerated, he tied up and strangled his cellmate, 63 year old Harvey Watson (who serving a life sentence for a mass shooting). Prison officials then transferred him to a high security prison to await trial for Watson’s murder, but he managed to strangle another inmate, 26 year old Aaron Cooper (who was serving 34 years for robbery), to death with the wire that separated their cages. Gleason demanded the death penalty, which was given to him by the courts. He also claimed that he committed several other killings before Jamerson, but his additional confessions currently remain unverifiable.
111. Alfredo Prieto (~1984-2015, lethal injection): Prieto was both a serial killer of young women and a member of the Pomona Northside street gang. His sexual crimes involved the abductions, rapes, and shooting deaths of at least 4 females, 24 year old Tina Jefferson, 22 year old Rachael Raver, 19 year old Stacey Siegrist, and 15 year old Yvette Woodruff. Raver and Siegrist’s partners, 22 year old Warren Fulton III and 21 year old Anthony Gianuzzi, were also murdered during their kidnappings. The other known victims, 27 year old Manuel Sermeno, and couple, 71 year old Lula and 65 year old Herbert Farley, were shot dead during robberies. In the home invasion that killed Woodruff, Prieto and his fellow gang members also abducted her 17 year old friend and the friend’s 33 year old mother. The mother and daughter pair were gang-raped, shot and stabbed together, but they managed to escape with their lives. Prieto was sentenced to death in both California and Virginia, but stayed in California’s San Quentin until his death warrant was signed in Virginia. He had also shot and injured 3 gang members over his suspicions of them sleeping with his wife, but was lightly sentenced due to the victims' gang affiliations.
112. Ricky Gray (~2005-2017, lethal injection): Gray and his similarly aged nephew murdered at least 9 people, which composed of a lone woman, 35 year old Treva Gray, and two entire families, the Harveys (consisting of parents, 49 year old Bryan and 39 year old Kathryn, and their daughters, 9 year old Stella and 4 year old Ruby), and the Baskerville-Tuckers (consisting of 21 year old Ashley, her 46 year old mother Mary, and Mary’s 55 year old husband Percyell) in a week long burglary spree. Almost all of the victims were tied up and gagged in their homes, and beaten to death with hammers or had their throats slit. Before she was killed by them with her parents, victim Ashley Baskerville had assisted Gray and his nephew in several of their robberies. The pair stole any items and valuables they could carry, and were reported to have taken money, computers, television sets, wedding rings, and even cookies. They were also linked to several non fatal assaults, one of which involved a 26 year old man being beaten into a coma.
113. William Morva (~2005-2017, lethal injection): Morva, a son of Hungarian immigrants, and an accomplice were arrested while trying rob a grocery store at gunpoint. While awaiting trial, he badly sprained his ankle and wrist in prison, and was transferred to the Montgomery Regional Hospital for treatment. He overpowered a deputy guarding him with a metal toilet-paper container, stole his gun, fatally shot Derrick McFarland, a 25 year old hospital security guard, and escaped. Morva then fled to Virginia Tech’s campus, and shot and killed 40 year old Eric Sutphin, one of the police officers chasing him.

Kazue and Moriko spent their last two days at the capital completing all the purchases that they needed more leverage to make than they had easy cash for. The solution was easy enough; they dressed up in the expensive outfits they had been gifted with and a properly notarized court official traveled with them to the stores to verify their identities, along with a suitable retinue of guards and a carriage to drive them to their destinations. Properly identified, they could make purchases with an agreement for the purchases to be delivered to the dungeon and be paid for upon arrival. Not every merchant was amenable to this idea, and Kazue was pretty certain a few of those were just being stubborn because they knew exactly who she was and they were competitors with her father, but that was life.
They had intended this to be only a single day of purchasing, but it took even longer than they expected and it delayed their departure by one more day. This public show of their identities also meant it would be a lot harder to travel through the capital incognito unless they actively disguised themselves. Oh, most people would still not recognize them when they were dressed in their normal clothing, but it would only take one person to notice them and decide to say something.
The day after they completed their shopping, the two slipped out the western gate in the predawn, with a little bit of assistance from Lady Yuriko who seemed very familiar and adept with escorting young women out of the castle while keeping them unseen by others.
Realistically, this trip was their last chance to travel Kuiccihan in a manner mostly like normal people. They had the dubious distinction of being officially 'foreign nobility' and 'national celebrities' at the same time. So they set off walking the road to the nearest port city, determined to get in as much as they could during the remainder of summer and early fall. They doubted that they'd be back home before the first snows hit, not while traveling on foot to experience as much of the journey as they could, but they'd adjust their plans as the weather demanded. Winters were not terribly harsh in Kuiccihan, especially along the southern border which is where they would be traveling for the last leg of their trip.
They were determined to be home before snow made it too hard to travel, and they were going to stay home until a few weeks after the spring equinox and celebrate their first anniversary with Mordecai.
While they walked, Moriko had plenty of time to amuse Kazue with tales of what was going on back at the dungeon. Stories about the trio of teenagers were entertaining of course, but there were some other events of interest, such as the arrival of more kobolds.
Mordecai sighed as the old kobold shaman finished explaining why they were here. "So, you want me to be your retirement plan?" He couldn't help but wonder if they had stolen this idea from the townsfolk having brought older pets to him.
Crizdirk laughed softly, "I would not have thought to put it that way, but yes. There have been generations beyond count since our ancestors last thrived in your territory, but we have retained copies of their knowledge. Not all will want to do this of course, but those who have traveled with me today are all in agreement that they want to. We did debate for a while to decide whether this would be an allowable course to follow. If the tribe had decided against it as a whole, then we would not have come to you." The kobold grinned, clearly amused at Mordecai's discomfiture. "My lord, we know what we are offering of ourselves, the texts were clear about that. And even with severed bonds, they remembered you fondly when the books were written. We ask this of you freely."
With nearly three score elderly or disabled kobolds to host, Mordecai had elected to bring the group deeper into the dungeon rather than try to find space in the trading post. They were currently all in the observation room above the arena and enjoying food brought in by the bunkin. "This is a fairly significant decision," Mordecai replied, "and not mine to make alone; give us a bit of time to discuss it. Now, just to be clear: while my original territory may have overlapped where this territory now is, the rightful first claim is Kazue's. She accepted me into her home and core when I was reduced to a spirit bonded to Moriko alone. As such, despite our history, this makes your clan junior to the laganthro clans."
Mordecai's greatest concern was making sure that neither Kazue nor the laganthros felt displaced. This was closely followed by his concern with fully sapient beings offering to have their free will compromised. When it came to creatures rising to sapience as part of their bond with their dungeon, he had no problem with just accepting that as part of the nature of the world. This was in part due to the fact that they didn't have an established identity and sense of self to alter.
A person from outside the dungeon did have a personality and sense of self established, and making them an inhabitant made alterations to their personality to guarantee their loyalty. He'd only been willing to make that offer to Brongrim and Nainvil because of the nature of the situation, as a possibly less bad option. Indefinite contractors were a much more limited resource, and he wouldn't have really wanted them as such.
Ironically, he'd be more willing to consider those two as an option for contractors now, but they were settled in and apparently happy in their new roles as part of the Riverbridge militia.
"Hmm," Kazue said over their link, "I understand why you are concerned, but isn't this also their will to choose to serve? That seems pretty reasonable, and not too different from people choosing to serve a ruler."
"In some ways not," Mordecai agreed, "excepting my key concern. But you are right, they are choosing. We also have the right to not accept that choice, as it involves our agreement to make happen."
Moriko sent a mental sigh before speaking, "It's sweet of you to be so concerned, it reflects part of what we both appreciate about you. You are very careful about not pressing your will on to others. But I think here you are making a mistake. They are choosing to serve as part of the community of the dungeon over the option of a well-earned afterlife that would not be subject to that sort of need to serve. From what you two have shared, it doesn't sound like any of them are afraid of death. In a small way, it is a death, or at least a separation. I can only imagine that they and their families have already gone through grieving of sorts. Even though they can see each other again in the future, those who join us will not be quite the same, and this will be their new home. They've already prepared themselves for this."
"Love," Kazue added, "this should be fine. They are choosing to follow what feels right to them. They know our rules, they know this dungeon will not be like the dungeon they've been told stories of, but still, they have come to us as supplicants."
They were right, but he still felt nervous about accepting the kobolds. It took a little while more to pull apart the threads of his tangled emotions to find the root of it. Having kobolds as inhabitants felt like it might be going back to how he was when he made such poor decisions before. Like it might be easy to backslide into making arrogant decisions. But he'd only let that sort of pride rule him when wrath was ruling him as well. The rest of his past life held much that was good, and he had people from that life who still saw him as a good person.
"Very well," Mordecai said out loud, "but I need to make sure you understand in your hearts what you are giving up. A simple test for you: don't fight my will. If you can't accept my power in this way, then becoming an inhabitant would break you." He gave them a moment to register what he'd said, and then he pushed his will out.
This wasn't a simple release of intent and presence. Mordecai pressed his will on them with raw power, a silent but irrefutable demand of surrender and acknowledgment of his victory and superiority. An aura of fear was one thing, but this sort of domineering aura dug deeper and was more likely to provoke prideful resistance.
This presence didn't touch the bunkin, they already belonged to the dungeon. It was the outsiders who needed to bow.
And they did. Every one of them. Surprised, Mordecai released them immediately. He'd felt a few sparks of pride initially flare, but every one of them had quickly been quenched as those kobolds focused on their desire to become part of the dungeon, as their ancestors had once been. "I was expecting at least a few of you to not be able to resist fighting me."
He shook his head to clear his thoughts. They had passed the test, and proven what they already knew: that they were ready to accept the dungeon's will over their own. "Very well." Kazue's hologram flickered to life on a nearby platform, and Mordecai cast an illusion in the image of Moriko on one side of the platform as he took up position on the other side. "The three of us stand as one. Swear your loyalty and lives to all of us, and be welcomed as inhabitants of the Azeria Mountain Dungeon."
The kobolds didn't need to approach to swear their oaths, Mordecai simply wanted to make sure that the images of his wives were in their minds as well as his own. And it only took moments more for all of them to swear their oaths from where they stood or sat.
The sudden influx of over fifty new inhabitants rippled throughout the territory as their minds and souls became linked to the web of the dungeon's mana and core.
Mordecai smiled as he looked over the group. "Welcome to your new home."
Kazue beamed at them. "I'm always happy to make new friends! So, you have less than twelve hours until our second refresh hits. There's no reason for you guys to take up any duties at all before then, and even after you are restored to your healthiest selves, I want you to take it easy for a while and just get to know your new home and make friends with the other inhabitants. Still, I know some of you will itch to be doing something, so let's go over the rules Mordecai and I established. We want everyone to have a very full life, and for everyone to be capable of defending their home. So, if you already know how to fight, your first task will be to learn to do, well, anything that is not related to fighting but supports the dungeon. If you are not a skilled fighter or mage or whatever, then you can report to Captain Keelina in the morning to join in her training regimen."
She pondered for a moment before adding, "Oh, if any of you are good cooks or have some interesting recipes, you should probably find some time to teach Head Chef Dairell what you know. Playwright Briant would be happy to learn all of the stories you know so that he can turn them into more plays and sketches so we can continue to surprise our guests. Um," she glanced over to Mordecai to see if he had anything to add.
"Well," Mordecai said, "we want to know many things, but another specific one that would be good is if you can scribe a scroll of any spells you know. I know most of them will likely be duplicates of spells we have, but even knowing how you construct your spells and scribe your scrolls will potentially add variety. One of the roles we have given ourselves is to become a repository of knowledge."
Kazue nodded, "That sounds good. But! You will do nothing but relax until the next refresh restores your bodies. And after that, you will still take it easy for a while, everyone needs to get to know each other." She giggled suddenly, "Besides, we should get a couple of groups of delvers coming through before then, it might be amusing to see how they react to running into a bunch of kobolds. Oh, you don't have to stay here to be clear, but if you aren't up for a lot of wandering, then this is a fine place for you to stay until you feel better."
And with that, the dungeon had a whole new tribe of inhabitants.

2024.05.02 21:20 buttbunks All monthly billed entertainment expenses (I.g. Netflix, planet fitness, audible, discord, YouTube, etc) should have the option to pay manually and not autopay
Tl;dr I don't like autopay and I wish they'd let me pay manually.
Why? Because personally, I'd rather them not dip into my checking account and taking out money I may or may not have. The dates and times aren't always reliable to track them accurately. Sometimes it causes me to overdraft (I don't keep my money in my checking) and I have to use extra money to clear it out. I don't want to delete the payment, I would much rather just pay for it manually so I don't have to worry. I'd rather get automated email or text reminders to pay up rather than logging into my bank account every day to see if the autopay went through.
Standing at the cash register with the money I was going to pay for my items then I suddenly don't have enough cause Netflix came through. Or I wake up early in the morning (3am) and see my bank overdrafted cause something else went through. Then what's worse is that the banks don't prevent the autopay from collecting their bill cause they want the overdraft money.
Edit: It's not that I'm I responsible financially, and that's not the problem. A lot of you are missing the point that I WANT THE OPTION TO OPT OUT OF AUTOPAY. Redditors not reading/comprehending yet again.
