2024.04.29 08:19 Eibyor Can rechargeable aaa and aa lithium ion batteries be charged with a battery charger/tester?

Hi. I see these rechargeable AA & AAA lithium ion batteries (sample) that are 1.5 volts for sale. Some of them have these usb ports as a way of recharging them. Can I use my opus bt-c3100 to charge these instead of the built in usb ports?
Also, I plan to use these in all applications where the old ni-mh batteries were used. Like clocks, flashlights, mice, etc. Is this a good idea? Or should I be more selective in their application? Will they damage low drain electronics?

2024.04.29 07:57 Medical_Bike_3369 Essential Skills for Finding Great Deals

Tired of feeling like you're constantly overpaying? We've all been there. But listen up, because I'm here to spill the tea on how to become a deal-finding master!
First things first, gotta do your homework. Before you hit that "buy" button, invest some time in researching your desired item. Think of yourself as a detective! Read reviews online, see what other stores are charging, and use those fancy price tracker tools to see how the price has fluctuated. Reviews are gold, my friend. They'll tell you all about the product's strengths and weaknesses, so you don't end up with a dud.
Comparison shopping is your new best friend. Don't be fooled by the first price you see. Shop around online and in stores – there are comparison websites out there that can make this a breeze. And while you're at it, see if there are any similar products that might be a better fit for your needs and your wallet.
Speaking of wallets, let's talk about those magical discount codes and coupons. Sign up for email alerts from your favorite stores, and don't forget to explore those coupon websites – they're treasure troves of hidden deals waiting to be discovered. Loyalty programs can be your secret weapon too. They often reward you with discounts and promotions just for being a regular customer.
Now, this next tip might require a little patience, but trust me, it's worth it. Seasonal sales and clearance events are your friends! Black Friday, Cyber Monday, end-of-season blowouts – these are prime times to snag amazing deals. And sometimes, all you need is a little waiting game. If you can hold off on that purchase, the price might just magically drop in the future. Price tracking tools can be your partner in crime here.
Negotiation might seem scary, but hear me out. It can unlock some serious savings, especially at flea markets, consignment shops, or local stores. The key? Do your research beforehand, so you know the typical price range for the item. And remember, you can always walk away if the deal doesn't feel right.
Here's a bonus tip for the truly adventurous shopper: think beyond traditional discounts. Refurbished electronics can be amazing quality and come with warranties, all at a fraction of the original price. And don't forget the magic of the second-hand market! Thrift stores, online marketplaces, and even good old-fashioned garage sales can be treasure troves waiting to be explored.
Finding great deals takes a little effort, but with these tips and a bit of practice, you'll be a deal-finding ninja in no time.

2024.04.29 06:52 Spazheart12 Question about smoke

Odd question but it just occurred to me. I live on the second floor. My neighbor below me smokes often. At least every hour. It’s been upsetting in its own right (no judgement) but I’m really sensitive to it, I’m always concerned about health, and I typically love fresh air and leave my windows open all day and night. I’ve not been able to do that without having to run around shutting them all when the smoke pours in. I started some plants on my balcony. Not much-some vegetables and mostly herbs. These are my babies. I had waited forever to get most of these herbs for when the plant sale was happening. I’m using most of them medicinally or as teas. I just realized that they are getting coated in smoke. I was out there watering when he came out. I wanted to finish real quick so I tried holding my breath but it was everywhere. It just comes right up as if he’s standing right next to me. That’s when I was like oh no they’re getting coated with it. I don’t see anyone else on their balcony smoking as much as he does so it’s just bad luck. I get it, he has a right to do it at his house. Anyway. Solutions. I’m thinking of getting one of those balcony privacy wraps? Maybe it will block some of it? Anyone have ideas?
I realize this is kind of silly and I probably sound dramatic but I seriously hateee cigarette smoke.
Edit: I just realized a privacy cover would block the sun ugh

2024.04.29 05:07 lizcopic Unfucking a whole house. Advice from a loving friend who’s great at organizing & wants to help.

Long, but comprehensive & caring.
Helping a veteran friend who’s like my Auntie unfuck her house for a few weeks now, so she can finally move away from the heat of AZ (that’s bad for her health), and I’m almost done! The end of the miscellaneous boxes is almost near!
Here’s the circumstances & how I approached them:
Here’s how I unfucked it all:
First things first, clear out one corner or closet, or already mostly empty space in one room to make your special keepers spot. Preferably a room or closet close to where you’ll load / move from, but out of sight, so potential buyers of the “for sale” items don’t see / want / be obnoxious about things that are not for sale, because they are special keepers. Maybe it starts with a small closet or corner, and as you get through more of the house it moves to larger spot, don’t fret about moving the keepers spot more than once, just be happy that it’s all sorted & ready to go.
Next clean out a spot that’s easily accessible for guests to make the “for sale” spot, I designated the garage, and cleaned off the good keep metal shelves that were in different spots of the house to put down the one wall of the garage instead, to put all the garage sale stuff on, and moved all the keep or miscellaneous stuff out of the garage to sort later. You don’t have to go this far yet of moving all non-sale out yet, or moving shelves, that’s just what I was able to do with the space and things I was given. If all you can do for now is make a lil 4x4 spot designated “for sale” boxes, start there and that’s still a huge win to know that it has a spot. Don’t fret! You’ll get there!
The next step is the hardest, but you’ll feel so much better when it’s done. Trash, Laundry, and Dishes. Apologies to your power bill, water bill, and garbage professionals, but you just gotta keep those appliances (hoping you have my favorite invention ever: a dishwasher) running until it’s all done; because it HAS to be washed before getting packed or sold/donated, and it makes a world of difference to not have those 3 things all over the house as you begin to sort more fun things like collectibles or something you love.
As you go through each room clean up & take pics of the big ticket or larger for sale furniture items to put online. Those items go to the sale spot in the house & immediately listed for sale online to get a head start on getting things out of there to make more room, and everything else gets sorted into categories.
To make sorting into categories easier, put boxes around a big table or comfy chair for things of common categories like “keep sewing” or “keep office supplies” or “keep kitchen” or “sale” etc. so when you do get a super random box of everything, it’s easier to sort into the nearby categories. Some keeper delicate things will need to be repacked later before you tape the boxes closed, but at least you know they’re all keepers of a certain type. & Have a big garbage nearby and extra (preferably crappy non-shippable) boxes to put the garage sale stuff in. & I like to sharpie marker the inside of the box flaps of the top so it’s easier for everyone to see what’s in it.
Also recommend sorting everything by general categories before sorting keep / sell / donate. Example: get ALL the shoes together before you sort which ones are to keep, so you know you keep enough formal or casual or which colors or whatever. Same applies to kitchen, and crafts, and everything else like the 5 vacuums. So yes, generally sort into types before you sort what’s to keep, UNLESS you have an emotional reaction to something in one way or the other love/hate, and then immediately put that item in keep or trash.
& yeah it’ll be emotional!!!! She keeps thanking me for helping because I’m impartial to the emotional attachments to the things, and I keep asking her if it’s worth the truck space?, and could we thrift a similar one where she’s moving?, or is it sentimental?, and it’s helping her to let go of a lot of things, or as she puts it “give it’s a lil kiss and thank it for its time and memories before it finds a new home”. And also there’s a lot of emotions of things that she hasn’t seen in years, like her mom’s photo albums, or a painting by Koko the Gorilla that she hasn’t seen in years and thought was lost, nope, I found it in a cupboard in the garage behind a box. I can’t blame her for crying when she saw it again. It was a lot of emotions of knowing that it’s not lost forever, and WTF?! why was it in the garage when I last saw it in the dining room where I was gonna hang it? So yeah, I try to space out emotional boxes for her to sort because I know they need a lil extra time, love, and an easy one like fun shoes or something happy to lighten the mood after, or a break.
& breaks are great! Take them. Play an app game or watch silly videos for 30min & chill before you go back to your brain trying to organize everything & moving around furniture and boxes, your brain and back and knees will thank you for the time out.
If you’re getting a moving van / cube / car topper, measure out a spot somewhere of that square footage & start a pile there to see how much you’re actually moving so you can easily see if it’s too much. & I recommend labeling all the keep boxes color coded rainbow heavy (books) purple at the bottom and red (fragile / do not smush) for the top. Crayons on all the corners, purple at the bottom & work your color way up the rainbow to red at the top corners of the boxes so you don’t smush something important, and it’s easy to load.
Sell big furniture & collectibles online. Facebook marketplace local for furniture and big stuff, but collectibles to a trusted source elsewhere depending on the niche, or maybe eBay and offer shipping to get more money, which might take lots of time.
Garage sale. Don’t expect much. Everyone is downsizing so what it would have got at a similar sale 10-20 years ago is not what it’ll sell for today. Honestly consider anything sold at a garage sale as a bonus extra, and whatever doesn’t sell after two weeks should get donated, or listed for $1-5 online so someone gets a deal & they’ll actually use it. So don’t stress too much about dragging everything outside; keep it simple and accessible, and advertise free on Facebook local sell groups and craigslist.
When you get overwhelmed, which will totally happen when going through a whole house, stop and take a look at the two clean corners of keepers and sale stuff, and how much bigger they’re getting, and be happy with the progress, and know that the rest can get they way too if you just keep moving.
& speaking of keep moving, this past month we’ve had the fun background noise of fun new albums playing in the garage, and Star Trek Deep Space 9 rewatch on the tv in the house, since it’s our comfort show that we don’t have to pay attention to since we’ve seen it so many times, and is fun to chat about to lighten the mood of the frustration of the misc boxes of: why is the huge heavy mortar and pestle in a box of electronics?!? Helps to laugh it off, or bust out singing like you’re in a musical. Being pissed about it is only going to ruin part of your day, and laughing it off of belting out a musical which makes you laugh, it’s a great peaceful release that is scientifically proven to make most brains happier.
Hopefully a little of this helped you find a way to approach your unique situation.
Best of luck to you all, and if you need a second opinion or more specific organizing advice, message me, I’m happy to help.
If you’ve read this far, Digital Hugs from the one and only - Liz Copic
Edit to add: yes I have my friend’s permission to post all this, even the emotional stuff, and she knows that I post as real me Liz Copic, and she doesn’t care. No Regrets for honesty. Qowat Milat Star Trek style.

2024.04.29 04:48 Affectionate_You_480 My ex husband married me when he already had a wife and another child I didn't know about. Sorry it's a bit long but you'll understand why.

Ok, here it is. Everyone keeps telling me to spill it. Alright when I was 20 I got diagnosed with a couple of very bad autoimmune issues and each year after that something new would be wrong to add to the list basically It had caused my life to be in pain all the time and hard to go out or even go outside. I hadn't dated since I had my daughter(she's 7 now). Even being sick, she was always my everything. Her dad decided that after we had her, he wasn't ready to be a dad. i wanted at least to see if i could make a male friend to do things with since my life is always unknown. the internet was still really new. This was just when my space had just started. I was on a dating site and one night I noticed I got a message from a new guy so I opened it and saw his profile it was really good he was handsome, he had a daughter my daughter's age never married I thought cool. So when we were chatting on the phone, we decided to meet, and yes, I informed him of all my medical issues. I was very upfront about being disabled. So a couple days later, he comes over for a movie together, and by the next month, we had moved in together. He proposed and got married. I know that's nuts. After about a week, I thought about what I had done, and my mom was my nurse, and he knew nothing about seizures. I freaked out, and I told him I couldn't stay. we ran into this too fast, and he didn't know my medicine and what to do for me in certain situations. He begged and didn't want me to leave, but my mind was made. The next morning, my mom came, and I packed my daughter and I up and left. I was hounded by calls texts my family he called begging them to help him change my mind and take him back, so after a week I agreed to talk with him, so I let him move in with us. Ok, here's where shit gets crazy. After about 8 months, I found out I was pregnant, and I knew it was going to be high risk due to my illnesses. So he was happy anyway we knew it would be hard and my daughter was so excited she wanted a sibling so bad. When she found out I was dating, that's the first thing she asked. Anyway my doctors were not they warned me this is very risky for both me and the baby and said I was acting selfish having this baby in my condition, ok jump to when I was 8 months pregnant a sheriff comes to my door and asks for my husband and I ask why and he can't tell me so I get him they go outside and he comes back and says he has to run down to the offices with him I ask why he said it's something stupid I'll be right back now as he's walking out the door I'm saying for what to the point where the sheriff has to say calm me down says he'll explain when he gets back he says that was a lie and he knew it. Well 9pm turns to 1am and I'm upset so I call the sheriff's office and ask him why my husband is still there, they tell me he's being held on a $10,000 cash bond for a DNA test for a woman's baby. At that moment i dropped to my knees and cried, im 8 months pregnant with a guy i spent nights up talking about ourselves what life was like growing up and everything up till the point we met, he met my family, I met his daughter and all of a sudden my stomach started cramping my mom got scared and took me to the hospital cause it's very dangerous cause I might not make it thru labor. Each day, I have to be thankful i made it another day even before i was pregnant. they said it's ok it was just stress. So ok, it's summer. I'm allergic to the sun, and I have to take a taxi. Use my back pay from what social security owed me when i got it. to bail his ass out to know what is going on, and if they just needed him to go to court, why didn't he just go? Did he know about a DNA test. To me I'm thinking it would have just been a court date and done. Why not tell me so I'm guessing he didn't want anyone to know and skipped it. So I get him out, and im so upset we get home, and I ask what's up, and I don't want to hear anymore lies. So he tells me he moved here with his babies mama's "best friend" and they ended up together for about 2 years and she says he's the dad of her "3 year old son" I was like she never said anything why didn't you tell me when you got court papers he said he hadn't seen her since he moved out but if you do the math she would have been at least 3 months when he moved out but anyway. I said, "Go sleep on the couch. I need time to think, and don't think about missing that court date, I want my 10k back." So I know you're wondering why I didn't file for divorce here. Well, it's depressing, and im not proud of the decision, even the one i made to marry him. At this point in my health, it was really rocky, and I was in and out of the hospital this whole time, even before being pregnant. So when he asked me to marry him I said yes after just a month cause he was good with my daughter and a good dad to his daughter and I knew I'd never get another chance for someone to except me with my all my medical issues unfortunately. So I did it, and all my daughter wanted was a father figure in her life. Ok moving on he goes it's his and she wants nothing to do with him or us her son already has a figure around and to my surprise he said fine he didn't want to see his son he didn't know about. This is where I started to see the real him start to emerge. I started to notice that even though he was working, I never knew what happened to that money. I paid for everything from my social security money each month and when it was time for our daughter I bought a new car even though they took my license away for having a seizure on the highway luckily no one was hurt. Then it just started with little things he decided to go to fire fighting school, so I said whatever to get the career you want. One week, I left to go to a specialist and get surgery done. When I came back, I was getting in the car and found a Walmart receipt for condoms from the night after I left. He said him and his buddies were out drinking, and his buddy picked up a girl, and on the way to drop them back home, they stopped for him to get condoms. Then I looked closely at the receipt he used my bank card to by them. I kicked him out that day. But of course, he was let back in after begging on his knees. Of course, it wasn't him. After that I noticed he was always bringing the IPad in the bathroom with him and hiding it and his phone under his pillow with a finger lock, one day after a seizure i came out of it and he was on a vourism site, i freaked and asked how long was he doing this and he admitted our whole relationship and would do it even during me sleeping or when I had a seizure or in the hospital with me even when he had the kids but would shield it so they didn't see like that makes me feel better i noticed him not wanting intimacy it started just every once in a while then never. But he said he was having issues. I said go to a doctor, but he refused.ok, the phone thing, now I wouldn't have wanted to look at anything if all these things weren't pilling up. So one day my daughter grabbed one of are old phones we didn't use out of the trunk and he flipped out, he was trying so hard to get it he pushed her down and knocked our baby over. That was it. My mom was there, and she could tell I was starting to go into a seizure and caught me before I hit the floor. When it was over, she told him to leave and never come back, and he did. After i fully came to, i called the bank, removed his name from everything, cause it was all mine, so he couldn't rely on me anymore. But I still had the car and his stuff to get rid of. After he left, my neighbor friend said when she was walking one day, he asked her if she wanted to you know, and she didn't tell me cause she knew we had a new baby. Back to the end, somehow he paid the remaining balance of the loan, and we transferred the title to him he called sometimes, I kept asking for him to come get his stuff, and he said, "Keep it." So, I had a yard sale. One day, I got a call from his daughters mother, and she informed me that she wanted to tell me to tell him to call her she's been looking for him, and she still wants a divorce. I said, "But we're married he never married you she said yes, we did in 2000. It was 2019 now, i hadn't seen him in 8 years, i told her." She said we'll we've been married for 19 years, and she's been searching for him for a divorce, I was floored. I said, "What about your friend? Do you know her son is his?" She said they were just friends and stayed together till they both were stable. I said no, I have the paper here. So I called the court house to see if our marriage was even legal or null and void but they said I would still need to file for divorce even though he lied cause our marriage certificate is still a legal document.but she got to him first and he agreed to file and pay so he doesn't get charged. So after she copied her paperwork and sent it to me. I talked to him and waited for mine. It never came, and I found out the woman he WAS cheating with he moved in with and was engaged and planning their wedding. So I waited, and I called and said if I have to file, there's a chance I can file charges, and I will. Well, low and behold, I found why he didn't respond. His girlfriend found my number on his phone and put it in hers cause of the kids. She calls me and tells me they're house is being raided and he was caught getting sex from a 13 year old girl through another man and was found that he had married a 16 year old when he was 20 and got her pregnant and when she lost the baby the parents paid for a divorce and took her back to Dominican republic. They took all electronics, and he had files upon files of teens 12-16. I don't know why she called me but I said sorry it's your problem now and filed for a bigamy divorce. I ran so fast and found both my girls and unfortunately had to ask, but thankfully, he didn't. He had the nerve to call me and ask if he could use my kids for taxes to pay for a lawyer. I said Nope. I should have known. are whole wedding reception and pictures he made himself the center of attention and whenever we went to anyones house all he did was talk about himself and i look back and can remember each time he wanted his way or wanted something he would manipulate anyone need to get what he wanted. Sorry for all the spelling and grammar mistakes 😅.

2024.04.29 03:14 Whale_7665 Interior electronics gone

Hey everyone, recently I’ve got a 1996 sx and its headset display (aftermarket), interior lights, door lights and clock are not working. The AC, cigarette light and the other electronics are fine though. The last owner said he pressed something on the aftermarket display and everything went out. But I’ve checked every fuse in the car, the only blown one was for something called the ‘charging system’ and when I swapped it with another it didn’t change anything. I also pulled the unit out and checked the one on the back of the display and it was fine.
I also checked the voltage of the power cable to the unit, and it has 14.4v which is exactly what it needs.
I’m really not sure what has gone wrong, any ideas of how to fix it? Any feedback is much appreciated, thanks.

Any love for my ugly baby?
I'm posting this really because of another post who was having trouble with their paint job. "Borderlands" style is fairly easy as they worse the paint, the better it generally looks IMO. This GameCube was given to me as it was about to be thrown away, it was genuinely the most gross dirty piece of electronics I've ever had to clean/work on, I think it had been used as an ashtray as there were cigarette butts inside it. She may not be as pretty as most the GC's on here but she is all mine.

2024.04.28 22:46 Chance-Worth-4954 Little story about how it all started..

Little story about how it all started..
A bit of history..
In the 80s and 90s, we have satellite dishes with pirate cards, it worked perfectly, but at that time we didn't have any problems with buffering. ;>)) But there were also people like myself with my own subscriptions to both Viasat & Canal Digital that I paid for. At that time it cost EUR 90 per month in today's currency. If you had the knowledge, you could read the original card and then add another one that you could then sell. The problem then was that anyone who had a little knowledge of how it worked with card readers could then in turn make a copy of what he bought. At that time there was no control over how many users were used. I made my own software so that no one could make a copy of my cards, when it was put in a card reader the card was erased, except for a small "string" where I could see if any attempt to read the card was made...
The smartcard used by DirecTV after the “H card” became known by pirates as the “HU” card. This was the third smartcard series for DSS (P3 card - period 3). Sometimes referred to as “the football card” because of the artwork on the back of the card.’

Oddly enough, the “football card” was not the one OJ Simpson was busted for pirating. That was the previous generation of smartcard, the “H card”.

https://preview.redd.it/smlkhrx76axc1.jpg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b037b1d67788d32286def83b97d042b3e38f825
By 2001, “HU loader” pirate smartcard programming software hit the market even before the hacked “H card” swap-out was done. Some pirates still used hacked H cards while others were buying new pirate HU cards that would last through the impending complete shutdown of the H card.
For prices in the tens of thousands of dollars, dealers bought HU loaders - slightly modified WildThing glitchers, with new software for the new smartcard. The pirate customer base had grown a lot from the previous hacked cards, so there was plenty of demand for the HU hack.
Once the HU loader was in the hands of pirates, it wasn’t long before it was cloned. More sources for HU loaders meant competitive prices. Eventually this led to the secret firmware for the HU loader (the “Atmel code”, for the AT90S2313 chip) being posted on a public website.
After the HU loader Atmel code was posted on the “HackHU” website, anybody with the right kind of smartcard programmer could program their own pirate HU cards. Some pirates modified the WildThing unlooper they bought for the H card to be compatible with the new HU loader.
In the early 2000s, detailed technical information about new hacks, schematics and software, was being spread via the Internet at an accelerated rate. It was no longer a trickle of information from high level dealers filtering down to end users.
A pirate might buy an expensive unlooper or loader, think “I could sell a lot of these”, reverse engineer the PCB and draw a schematic, then a locked chip becomes a dead end. So they post schematics online and hope someone else shares the missing pieces.
Many hardware producers (like Mikobu) competed to build and sell ready-to-use HU loaders. By 2002, for under a hundred dollars anybody could get everything they needed to program pirate smartcards. It was never easier to become a DirecTV pirate, or even a pirate card dealer.

https://preview.redd.it/pad3rdwc6axc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=015bb714ef4b0423a65fdf869403e8aca1eaa5df
This is another example, a Mikobu III loadeunlooper. The Mikobu III may have been the top selling pirate card programmer in its time, it was considered the “gold standard” to many pirates.

https://preview.redd.it/qsk44k6h6axc1.jpg?width=680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a499a9cc93a2a8bd5467351fc16d9a47768b45a
In 2001, the pirates had to deal with something they recognized all too well by now - their hacked smartcards were looped by a countermeasure against them. A lot of people had gotten used to programming their own smartcards, now they had to hope somebody produced an HU unlooper.
As was typical, the first HU unlooper was in the hands of a commercial pirate, unlooping cards for a fee. Later on, though, things took a turn - the growing mass of hackers chatting and sharing information online led to a new kind of development.
Not just one, but two kinds of HU unlooper were released and shared freely on the internet within days of each other in March 2002. HUFF (to unloop the HU cards responding only FF due to looping) and ul4s (unloop for sure). They both worked great.

https://preview.redd.it/axc4rddl6axc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=add5fa4f2cbc84a72e9d9a8642f52ed77f25d346

https://preview.redd.it/lb4d86gm6axc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba55d97148c8ce6e91a420c0ccb16ddd4e14ef04
By this time there was a kind of “critical mass” of hackers online, developing and sharing hacks for the HU card. Web forums, usually vBulletin or phpBB, were numerous and very active. Pirates helped each other use hacks and searched for new fixes when their cards were shut down.
Popular forums of the time included The Pirates Den (dsschat .com), Interesting Devices (id-discussions), Innermatrix, DR7 .com, Hitec Sat, and dozens of others. Many forums were owned by pirate dealers, and some acted as administrators or moderators on others.
Forums weren’t only for end-user pirates, some of the hackers developing new fixes frequented them also. Over time there was a shift from hacks developed in private and sold through a dealer network, to more widespread, and sometimes free, direct sharing over the Internet.
Some of the hackers became known and respected by many other pirates who admired the skills required to create new and improved hacks. Names like no1b4me, aol6945, and RAM9999 were amongst the elite in the online forums.

https://preview.redd.it/h0wqaetq6axc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=faa66dca9cf2f39a868fbd68776b9795e7231cba
Some of these hackers’ names would later show up on a DirecTV website publicizing the many legal actions taken against pirates. DirecTV would proudly boast over 24,000 lawsuits against end users, in addition to action against the hackers and dealers.
Satellite TV piracy was big business. In 1998, Canadian pirate Reggie Scullion (V-Cipher) was raided by police and $4 million in cash, bonds, and bank drafts was seized from his home and business, along with over 10,000 DirecTV smartcards. Pirate business was booming.
By 2003, satellite TV piracy seemed to have been growing out of control for years, despite increasing legal actions against pirates. There were estimates in the press of over 3 million satellite TV pirates, resulting in pay TV companies losing $4 billion in revenue.
Most end-user pirates were paying someone to program, or to unloop, their smartcard. The dealers they paid came in all shapes and sizes - friends, family, small businesses, international pirate dealer networks.
Hackers were writing their own versions of 3M code (or ripping off someone else’s), packaging it up in a loader program with a Windows GUI, or in some cases a script for the popular Winexplorer tool, and offering it for sale.
Pirate software evolved alongside changes in computers and the Internet. From MS-DOS text interfaces to simple Windows applications with two or three buttons, to integrated environments for developing and testing hacks.
For the H card, a software package “BasicH” was been popular for being powerful but also relatively simple to use. Later, with the HU card, even more tools like “ExtremeHU” for programming cards and “HU Sandbox” for developing new pirate code became standard tools for hackers.

https://preview.redd.it/07rj9fiw6axc1.jpg?width=766&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=11baf6c8dcea5fc0b124bde1fb7924a35763b58b
WinExplorer was a widely used tool for smartcard hackers, for writing “.XVB files”, VBScript programs that talked to smartcards or smartcard glitchers. Hackers would share, study, and modify an overwhelming number of .XVB files, a de facto standard for pirate satellite scripts.

https://preview.redd.it/lu7krltz6axc1.jpg?width=760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0943808106bba39bcf9f3f0ee7f82adaa612812f
Another way used by pirates to watch DirecTV without paying was to use an “emu”, or emulator, system. Using a computer connected to a satellite receiver by a simple PCB interface, the smartcard was emulated to allow all channels to be viewed.
Because hackers hadn’t reverse engineered the HU card ASIC, they could only emulate the microcontroller functions while using a real HU card as an “AUX card”, sending data through the hardware ASIC. The emu software protected the original smartcards from ECMs.
After each version of DirecTV (or later, Dish Network) smartcard was hacked, versions of emulator hacks were developed by pirates. SLE44 and Pitou were H card emulators, Kryptonite an HU emu.

https://preview.redd.it/4mcu5vo37axc1.jpg?width=284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5779dc53fe15b5fc7100e9c66c3b616164c4178
During the era of the pirate HU card, DirecTV may have had a hard time locking out the pirates with glitchers from programming their smartcards, but there was a lot of grief for the pirates in the form of frequent countermeasures shutting down the hacked cards temporarily.
A technique used by the HU card against the pirates was “dynamic code”. Instead of key calculation being done entirely in the ROM and EEPROM firmware known to the hackers, short blocks of program code was sent down in real-time over the satellite.
Dynamic code meant the pirate hackers had to chase a moving target. The code could be changed at any time, and different versions of dynamic code could be rotated in and out of service at any time.
Sending program code over the satellite had been done before, but on the HU card the dynamic code went beyond what pirates had previously dealt with. Let the code run and risk the card being looped. Block unknown code and the card is shut down every few days.
Another electronic countermeasure (ECM) used to target pirate H and HU cards was known as “hashing”. Regions of the smartcard’s memory would be used in the key calculation algorithm, so that the correct decryption keys depended on correct (not hacked) data in the card.
The pirate hackers rose to the challenge, improving their hacks, adding “stealth” and “AI” features to their 3M code. The level of artificial intelligence implemented in these 4 MHz micros with a total 384 bytes of RAM and a KB or two of EEPROM space seems suspect, in retrospect.
Unlike the H card with two chips (microcontroller and ASIC), the HU card only had one chip inside. The HU card had an ASIC on the same silicon die as a Texas Instruments TMS370 microcontroller. 384 bytes of RAM, 16 KB ROM, 8 KB EEPROM.

https://preview.redd.it/m5pby1a87axc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4cb7cb084b5a5604e004c6432187753d6bc6f80
Another tactic used by DirecTV to shut down pirate cards was to more aggressively target smartcards that were inactive or had been deactivated in their system. The satellite receiver itself could be disabled, instead of relying on software inside the smartcard to disable itself.
The pirates became familiar with the dreaded “Call Ext. 745” messages when their card ID# was disabled - blacklisted by DirecTV. Pirates cloned cards with different ID# or modded the satellite receiver software, and new hacks were developed to bypass the Ext745 shutdowns.
One type of hack was a “no745 board” that acted as a wedge between the satellite receiver and smartcard. The no745 board exploited a bug in the receivers, allowing it to provide the receiver with a fake ID#, to avoid any blacklisting by DirecTV.
Pirates continued to hack the HU card to watch DirecTV for free, though sometimes having to update their pirate card daily, until the HU smartcard was swapped out to a new “P4” card. The P4 card had increased the level of complexity again to be better protected against hackers.
Support for the HU smartcards was disabled permanently by DirecTV in mid-2004. Since then, there has not been a pirate DirecTV hack on the market, or published online. The new P4 smartcards locked the pirates out.

https://preview.redd.it/g2oiemxe7axc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9872b8a955e71e87b6688a55e24e218e7e66a11
Around that time, a lot of pirates had switched their focus to Dish Network (and Bell Expressvu in Canada), which had been hacked since 1999. That’s another topic with many different stories to be told.
In September 2006 at 27 years old, the hacker behind the HU loader, the first pirate hack for the DirecTV HU smartcard, pled guilty to charges carrying up to 5 years in prison. At the time, he was already serving a 30 month prison sentence for hacking DirecTV Latin America.
In the years since, he and the other hackers involved in DirecTV piracy in the 90s/early 2000s have completed their prison sentences, been released, and put satellite TV piracy in the past.
Then we all had different cards and modules....
Here are some examples that many people probably recognize...'

A little history for those of you who weren't there at the time, when we had to do everything ourselves. Now we have IPTV which is very easy compared to the time before.
Next entry, is an IPTV Guide. A jungle for most of them, even those who call themselves Resellers barely know what they are talking about when they advertise.. Most of them do NOT know what it is they have and write what they think, so BEWARE!!

2024.04.28 21:28 cwdowden52 Weird fix--Maybe fluke?

So got sucked into getting For Parts Denon Home speaker off ebay after I got lucky that first only needed hard reset (Connect button + plug in). It was just flashing red. Then I got a Home 350 and 550 that it didn't fix. I bought another worse set for parts to swap (still way under MSRP).
I thought they were all bricked (except 550 that need new SIMP/power unit) until I noticed SUN module (the wifi/non audio things) on 550 had ribbon cable in different orientation. 550 SUN module worked and then flipping cable on a 350 module worked. Now 350 working as far as I can tell (played via aux and airplay and updated firmware). Does this make any sense? Per service manual that is just for USB. Is this an issue from factory?
There is a bare wire side and blue covered side. I'm pretty sure one had not been opened (the other was mangled from opening and reaked of cigarette smoke on grilles that is next project)
Another weird fix I had was turning off samsung smarthings on a tV that keep stopping Airplay on 550 soundbar (really it kept switching to TV audio).
I have been looking through all the post to find fixes so figured I would share. Moderate electronics experience so I was ok opening but the big transition on power unit still scare me somewhat.
I love the idea of multiroom audio with full port options in case of internet issues.

2024.04.28 21:18 HerbieHaddock **Smoking integrated tube amp, advice needed!

Hey folks, first time tube amp owner, first time poster here.
I just received my first tube amplifier - a Mistral MT34 integrated tube amp (35 wpc), and am excited to experience the warm analogue sound that I’ve been saving toward for such a long time. After plugging it into my system, however, it almost immediately started smoking from what looked to be the preamp section/tubes, so I immediately switched it off and disconnected it. The filaments were glowing red, and the room filled with electrical smelling smoke.
The component chain looks like this:
Pro-Ject Perspective turntable > Bellari VP129 Phono preamp (100 ohms output impedance) via RCA to the AUX port of > Mistral MT34 integrated amplifier (100k ohms input impedance) > KEF Corelli speakers (8 ohms).
I connected the black side of each speaker cable to the white amp input, and the red side to the red 8 ohm tap of the amplifier (see pictures).
Is there a catastrophic mismatch between my equipment specs that could have caused me to fry the amp? Have I set it up incorrectly? There’s a new electronic safety test sticker from April 2024 on it as I bought the amp from a charity shop on eBay, so this is throwing me. The description said it was turned on and functioning before the sale, however, so if the seller plugged it into power without connecting to speakers first, could this have damaged the circuitry/caused damage that might have led to this smoking?
I’m worried I may have fried or permanently damaged the amp, and now face a hefty spend on investigating this with a local AV repair specialist - a cost which I didn’t anticipate, and which has dampened my excitement, honestly.
I’d also liked to know what caused the issue before I try to integrate it back into my set up and do the same thing again.
Any thoughts or advice appreciated. Thanks so much 🙏🏼

2024.04.28 21:07 MarkedMatt Sidorovich - Scammer or Respected Trader?

Many people say that he's a scammer. Today I'll be uncovering whetever that accusation is true or not.
Gameplay
I did some research, and in Clear Sky Sidorovich actually pays for artifacts more than other traders. Even Sakharov buys artifacts for lower price.

Lore
Sidorovich isn't the most moral person, however, he's most respected trader (more about it later tho). He doesn't cares about well being of others nor will he do something for free:
"Got a job for you, Marked One... I want you to find a stalker called Nimble, he was carrying some very important information. He disappeared somewhere near the bridge. Find him, dead or alive - I don't care, I need the flash drive with the info. Visit Wolf from the local camp, and ask him. He certainly knows where that guy can be."

"So, Marked One, I saved you and I'm not going to pretend I did it to win favors upstairs. You do some jobs for me, and we're even."
"Well, for one thing, it does exist. And given that, we definitely ought to clear a path to it. A single clan should have enough muscle to get it done. But if all the clans joined forces, we might even be able to get through the Scorcher. The way things are now, each faction knows something, but they'll die before they share it with one another. Each faction is holding on to their secret. Add to that an imbecile as bad as our Mitay and you've got real dead heat. Sidorovich is the only one collecting intelligence, piece by piece. Hard-headed as they come, heh. But then again, it's Sidorovich: don't expect something for nothing." - Duty Barman Kolobok answering Scar's "And what do you think about the Wish Granter?" question
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/uzR2i6.jpg
But despite all the accusations, no one actually complains about his prices. Even more: Jupiter Stalkers say that Sidorovich's tools aren't expensive:
"To be honest, the last place I saw decent tools was in Sidorovich's bunker at the Cordon. Sure, you have to pay for them, but they're new and not all that expensive either." - Random stalker NPC answering Degtyarev's "Where can I find tools around here?" question
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/UhX24p.jpg
Sidorovich paying well is also something that's implied in dialogues. For example Father Valerian said the following:
"The Cordon really is the Zone's front entrance. We stalkers come here a lot. It's a nice place to relax, stock up on ammo and get an honest coin for your loot from Sidorovich. And if you need a partner, the Cordon's got a number of rookies who'll go through hell and high water for an old-timer. To them we're like living legends."
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/pAhxtn.jpg
Moreover, Valerian seemed upset about possibility of not being able to have business with Sidorovich:
"Yeah, I guess we got a little carried away... Can't figure out what to do now. We're holding the commander hostage, which is a kind of guarantee that the army's not going to bomb our asses back to the Stone Age with their choppers. We can't kill him, but we can't let him go either... The sly son of a bitch knows that we need him alive, and he's not caving in a damn inch. Trouble is, he's the only one who knows where the loot is hidden. If we don't deliver that loot to Sidorovich, he won't do business with us ever again. If we could only make this army bastard play by our rules, it would be a whole different ball game, believe me."

His reputation and connections
"That's a strange question coming from you. It ain't your first day in the Zone, but you're asking me about Sidorovich? Hell, everyone knows Sidorovich! He's the most respected trader in the whole Zone! If he can't fulfill your shopping needs, nobody can." - Wolf in Clear Sky
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/T3GFyY.jpg
"Thanks for returning the case, merc. Now I can settle up with my client. The reason I've survived in the Zone as long as I have is that I always keep my word. You screw a client in this place and you're pretty likely to find a knife in your back real soon. Anyway, that's enough about me... About your stalker - he was here. His name is Fang, and he was looking for tube amplifiers and some other electronic crap... I'm not an expert in that sort of thing. I sold him the amp, but I didn't have the other stuff he was after, so I told him to visit the diggers at the Garbage. Recently, some stalkers at the Garbage have dug up old buried equipment from after the accident at the Chernobyl NPP, and now the place is filled with all kinds of ancient components. Look for him there. And remember, if you want to trade - I'm your man."
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/piHsac.jpg
He also maintains his reputation and doesn't like others ruining it:
"Imagine this: there's some weirdo running around here who introduces himself as my sales representative, uses my reputation, and then tries to hand off second-rate stuff! Broken barrels, the armor that's falling apart, expired canned goods. I've already had to deal with a few unhappy clients. Bottom line, I need a man to have a little chat with that "sales representative", whatever it takes." - Description of "Kill the sales representative" sidequest
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/dbVS5Z.jpg
"I'm having a confrontation with this one trader. Well, if he doesn't want to cooperate, the hell with him! But I won't let anyone start filthy rumors. In short, he needs to be wasted so the others don't get out of hand. Let them all know who's the boss here." - Description of "Kill the trader stalker" sidequest
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/nysjQe.jpg
"The few soldiers there have been ordered to shoot on sight, so you'd better walk around it and try not to show your ass. If you piss them off, they may call for the Spetsnaz from the further cordon. Those guys can brew up such shit that I won't have any customers for a month... I know the commander a little: he likes to take a swig as much as the next man. I'm surviving on here thanks to him."
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/fQN8Ez.jpg
"They guard and protect, what else? No one really knows whether they're guarding the Zone or protecting the rest of the world from it. Sometimes they send whole expeditions here to look for something... But I'll tell you something: they don't respect the Zone and the Zone doesn't like them either, that's why they return home in body bags very often. What else is there? Well, they look down at everyone and act like gods or something. They have no respect for stalker rules and won't ever help you even if you're dying right in front of them. They'll gladly shoot you themselves tho', and they don't get reprimanded for that... I've got a few contacts among them...you know, people always need vodka and...umm, magazines, right? Don't annoy them - they'll whack you for nothing."
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/CJ6r7O.jpg
Other than the military, Sid has contacts with all kinds of clients outside the Zone:
"A long, long time. I was one of the first in the Zone. Back then we didn't have radiation detectors or suits, so your life expectancy in this place was real short. That's why I've never been past the Garbage. That sort of thing isn't for me. I've got the brains for a different sort of business: I'm like engine grease, without me the engine falters and that means people start fighting. But when I'm around everyone's happy. Even though the Zone is full of wonders, the demand for these wonders is even bigger - be it from governments, special services, private agencies or fat cat collectors. I'm their link to this place: I facilitate trade between the Zone and the outside world. I know all the right people and I can solve just about any issue without leaving this room. That pretty much sums me up."
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/uAwJ63.jpg
Sidorovich's impact on other traders
Nimble in Call of Pripyat heavily implies that his stuff is going through Sid's routes:
"Right now is a bad time... the military are making things hot at the Cordon. Someone attacked their outpost the other day, which made them even more difficult to deal with." - Nimble when Degtyarev buys all assault rifles from him and asks for another one
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/sxi7pR.jpg
Shilov directly states that he buys his stuff from Sidorovich:
"I'm a trader, although I haven't been one for long. As you can see we only just got here. Father Valerian said that you can be who you want to be, and I decided that I'm a trader there and then. And why not? I've got the skills and have known Sidorovich well enough to do as he does. Heck, I was renting out comic books for cash to students back at grade-school. Eh, those were the good days. Anyway, I'm kind of a natural businessman, you know? So here I am, getting my head around a new profession, so to speak. Right now I buy my stock from Sidorovich, so the prices ain't great, but I do have things that might interest you - some of the loot our boys brought back from the raids."
Additional proof: https://snipboard.io/XBPwNh.jpg
And lastly, clients outside the Zone wait in line, while stalkers from all over the Zone are willing to sell their stuff to Sid. For example, in Clear Sky, "Zaporozhets car at mine entrance" stash, that is located in the Red Forest says the following:
"I stashed my loot under the seat of that Zaporozhets car next to the mine entrance. I'll pick it up again before I go see Sidorovich."
"Why am I here? Well, I like the weather and the scenery is just beautiful. Ha-ha! The truth is, I'm too old to wander the Zone as a stalker. Plus I'm hardly the kind to survive an encounter with a controller. It's calm around here, that's the main reason. People who need me will find me no matter where I am. If someone's got a serious order or they need some quality goods, they come to me and only me. And sometimes they even wait in line, too. Why? Because if I can't get loot through the Cordon, nobody can."

2024.04.28 20:03 Stunning_View_2334 I'm planning really getting into VR with the Meta Quest 3 (or 2), and I'm seeking some advice (wires, straps, batteries )

I flirt with VR since the Oculus Rift Kickstarter, and I'm finally in a moment in life I can have it. I had a generic "cardboard" VR, and as crude as it was, it was still enough for me to enjoy it. Now, with a relatively higher budget (I'm also not in the US, electronics are more expensive around here), I found the Meta Quest 3 on sale, and am ready to make the investment. But I have some doubts, and I'd be really happy if you could answer.
I'll firstly pose a money question: the Meta Quest 3 is (on sale) approximately 800 dollars around here. The Meta Quest 2 is $350. What would be your pick? Now for the headset gear questions...
I am planning to use it on PC games. I heard that it's possible. But I wanted to know what should I buy for the better experience. I'd guess that I can connect with the PC with no wires, but I'm a fan of having wires just so I can have no issues with connectivity and delays. Should I buy it? Do I need an specific Meta VR wire to do so? Or does it connect with any long USB-C cable?
Next topic is the straps. I've been hearing about the "BoboVR strap", if I'm not mistaken. Some people say it's a must-have, and I have been wondering about it. Is it just because of comfort? Is it just a strap? Why would the Meta Quest 3 strap be so bad? I'm not saying that it isn't possible, because funnily enough, I did have trouble with my "VR Box" strap being crappy. So much that I gave up on its strap and started using it only while laying down. Would I need Bobo if I plan on using it only while laying down? As silly as it may sound, I do intend to use VR to watch relaxing stuff to get sleepy also.
And to wrap it up, batteries. How long does the headset original battery holds up? Can I use it while charging on the PC USB slot? I'm not planning on using it for very extended periods of time.
