Unpopular Opinion: I'm a fan of the free antivirus Avast.

2024.05.09 15:11 Environmental-Owl383 Unpopular Opinion: I'm a fan of the free antivirus Avast.

I recently got rid of Norton, thanks to the uninstaller available on their website. Norton didn't argue and promptly refunded me. Even after uninstalling, some Norton components still lingered in the startup programs, which I manually cleaned up.
Before resigning myself to let Windows Defender be my sole antivirus, I decided to try another product. I debated between the free version of Bitdefender and Avast. I chose the latter because it seems to offer more features. I have to say, I don't regret my decision. I'm genuinely impressed by all that Avast offers for free. I don't think I'd get all of this with Bitdefender's free version. Plus, by tweaking the settings, you can avoid intrusive ads pushing you to buy additional services. Am I the only one who likes Avast's free version?

2024.05.09 05:40 Why_No_Petition Which do Redditors 2024 say is better: Total AV VPN or Surfshark?

These days I've been looking into security tools and found TotalAV. I chose to try TotalAV VPN instead of Surfshark because of all the talk about them. You may have heard of Norton, Kaspersky, McAfee, and other well-known names. But TotalAV caught my attention. If I tried TotalAV by getting different viruses, it caught them all. But I'm not sure how strong its protection really is. It stops the download of unknown files so that they can be sent to the cloud for a more thorough scan. This is true even though I'm not trying with the rarest viruses. Some cool tools that come with TotalAV are a VPN, a password vault, and a data breach check. It is a security program. It paid off when it told me that Open Subtitles had been hacked and my email had been taken. I found out about the hack and was told to change my login by going to their website. If you compare TotalAV to Surfshark, I'd like to know how well it saves you. TotalAV may not be as well known as some other antivirus programs. A lot of the tools in it are very helpful to me.

He sent me my passwords and a screenshot of my computer from about a month ago. In fact, about a month ago, I downloaded a file from GitHub to change the hwid of my computer, but a day after downloading it, my Steam account was hacked and . After that, I changed all passwords for important accounts. I also formatted my computer. It seemed like the hacker didn't know the newly changed password. What should I do in this situation? Below is the contents of the PDF sent by email. Please help me
Hello. I've come across something that might catch you off-guard. OK - You should be cognizant of the fact that as of today, I have taken full control of your device's operating system and, by extension, your account. Your digital life has been under my meticulous watch for a considerable period. A virus has been installed on your system, enabling me to control your devices, particularly the display and camera. I've harvested all your data, from messengers to social networks. I've harvested all the information on you during this time. While keeping an eye on you, I discovered something noteworthy. Given our shared awareness, the course of action seems clear, wouldn't you agree? If you'd rather I didn't carry this out, send 1000 $ (Dollar US to my Bitcoin wallet. BTC wallet address: bc1qr29dqp2vrm4wz746gz3ruygchq9pm6fyfs9zcf If you're not sure how to fund a Bitcoin wallet, consider using Google to find a step-by-step guide. Once the funds have been received, I will immediately remove all unwanted material. Afterward, we can part ways. I assure you that I am committed to deactivating and removing all malware from your devices. You can trust me; I always honor my commitments. This is a fair deal, especially considering the time and effort I've invested in tracking your profile and traffic. You have exactly 48 hours from the time you open this letter to make the payment! In case I do not receive the agreed-upon amount from you after this timeframe, I will share access to your accounts, visited sites, personal data, and edited materials with the public, and no warning will be given. Just remember: I don't make mistakes, and I strongly discourage any attempts at humor with me. My resources are abundant. Complaining about me is fruitless because they won't be able to trace me. Formatting the drive or destroying the device will be ineffective because I already possess your data. Writing back to me is a pointless endeavor, as I don't communicate through personal email, and I won't be monitoring responses Best of luck, and don't let this ruffle your feathers! Every person has their own tasks, and today, it seems you've drawn the short straw. Going forward, I'd advise you to observe online safety measures and avoid sketchy websites. 2024.05.04 08:45 ImmatureLoon How do I get rid of the yglsearch hijacking virus?

Starting off, yes, I have already googled this, and I've taken every step suggested so far from what I could find. All that's done is remove it temporarily, but then it's back within three hours. Just before I got it, I also had the customsearchbar hijacking virus, but somehow managed to get rid of it (I think) after several attempts. I seriously do not want my personal computer to be managed by some organisation, and even more seriously, I am not dealing with fucking Yahoo forever.
Steps I've taken so far:

I have done so much, and I am genuinely out of ideas, so please, if you have anything, let me know, I am so exhausted and just don't want to deal with this anymore
I think I've found a way to handle it, but I'm struggling to make it work. I checked my chrome policies, and this is the one forcing me to have the virus extension.
https://preview.redd.it/ddmbx70rmkyc1.png?width=1878&format=png&auto=webp&s=b15abe362e0ad416c0f44ab0c581fff72aaee9a7
There is another policy called extensioninstallblacklist which if I could edit it, would allow me to block the extension from being installed. The problem however, is that I don't know how to edit it. I know I need to go to admin.google.com but the problem is, my account isn't being considered the admin.
I attempted to make an admin account through both google workspace and cloud identity. My google workspace account was an individual one, I got the free trial, but it didn't work, I contacted customer support, they told me a business account is required for that function (which was not stated anywhere, and is dumb as hell) and so I just cancelled my free trial and gave up on that. Then I moved on to cloud identity, which just didn't work, I don't know why, I don't know how to work that, and couldn't find a customer service or anything.
Would anyone be able to let me know another way to sign into admin.google.com? Either that, or if this will even work, since this is just a hopeful last ditch attempt before I backup my important files and reset my computer.

2024.04.19 23:05 faiythe_777 Need Guidance

Currently: I am currently a Claims compliance and Audit Manager with a local pharmacy. I have been at this since 2011. My bachelors degree is in cybersecurity (graduated 2023) and I have done Simply Cyber GRC Masterclass. I have also taken various classes on Udemy on topics from Frameworks to GRC course to IT audit courses. I also had a side business doing IT Support Consulting (basically Help Desk for the community). I also have several certifications Comptia Project, A+, Net +, Sec+, Cysa+, Pentest and ISC2 Associate, SSCP. (these are all still active and I am wanting to turn the associate into member but I need the experience) I got these while in college. However, I generally only put SSCP and Sec + on my resume
Goal: I want to transition into GRC, IT audit, or HIPAA Privacy
Questions:
  1. Should I put all the certifications on my resume? I am also struggling to do an executive summary on my resume that would help me transition.
  2. Should I put all the classes that I have taken on Udemy and the Master Class on my resume?
  3. Would paying for the OCEG certifications and classes be worth it? I don't want to take CISA or CRISC until I have more experience, because god forbid I take it and spend all that money and still cant get the experience and lose the certification.
  4. I feel like since my experience isn't directly related that I am being passed over. I am just lost on what to do. Below is my experience that I have on my resume at this time.
  5. Should I try for Help desk? My issue is I am the only income in my household, my husband is sick and cant work so I can't take less than 55K
RESUME EXPERIENCE
Executive summary that I have currently:
Seasoned professional excelling in healthcare operations, billing management, and IT consulting. Expertise lies in regulatory navigation and resilient strategy implementation. Recognized for driving efficiency and project leadership. Ready to leverage skills in GRC analyst roles, ensuring robust governance, risk management, and compliance.
Claims Compliance & Audit Manager

2024.04.16 00:52 Dense-Toe-1266 Help me please. I received and email saying I was hacked

I got an email today saying that iā€™ve been hacked and they are demanding money, which includes all the passwords iā€™ve used on my laptop. The email went to all my emails too and no one elseā€™s. I received a pdf which includes my name and also a screenshot of my laptop which I can confirm is real. What do I do. I have a camera on my laptop and Iā€™m worried they may have personal data as I use my laptop for things like discord to talk to my friends.
Since they may have sensitive information of me including private conversations as well as potential videos of me, should I be worried?
Below I will provide what they sent to me:
Hey. I regret to inform you of something that may be difficult to hear.
9/11/2023 9:27:18 AM - On this day, I want to alert you to the fact that I have gained total access to your device's operating system and your account. My monitoring of your activities has been ongoing and attentive.
I have placed a virus on your system that grants me the ability to control your devices, with particular access to the display and camera. I've accessed and archived all your communication data.
For a long duration, I've been gathering detailed data about you. In my watch over you, I've come across something quite peculiar.
You likely understand the significance of my recent discovery and the expected response. If you would prefer that I not do it, transfer 800 $ (US dollar) in my bitcoin wallet.
Google can provide you with step-by-step funding instructions. As soon as the funds are received, I will take immediate action to remove all unwanted content. After that, we can part ways amicably. I also assure the deactivation and removal of all malware from your devices. You can trust my word, as I consistently honor my commitments. This is a fair deal, especially considering the time I've invested in tracking your profile and traffic. Please be advised that you have 48 hours from the time of opening this letter to make the payment!
In case I do not receive the agreed-upon amount from you after this timeframe, I will share access to your accounts, visited sites, personal data, and edited materials with the public, and no warning will be given.
Just be aware, I don't make errors. It's not a clever idea to try and play tricks on me because I have an array of tactics at my disposal. There's no point in voicing complaints about me because they won't be able to discover my whereabouts. Even wiping the drive or destroying the device won't change the fact that I already possess your data. Responding to this message is a futile action since I didn't utilize a personal email to send it, and I won't be reading any responses. Wishing you the best of luck and advising you not to get frustrated! Remember, every person has their own job to do, and today, you've encountered a difficult one. P.s. Moving forward, I'd recommend that you abide by internet safety rules and avoid visiting dubious sites.
You can use an antivirus like Norton for enhanced protection.
Any help is greatly appreciated thank you!

2024.04.15 23:11 heyimleila Updates? Noob here..

Hello everyone, hoping for some practical advice for my custom PC...
Last year I had a pc built for me by a supplier.
It's been amazing so far, I'd previously gamed on pre built laptops (I know, I know, I'm sorry) in bed (please know I'm sorry), and this is my first big girl PC.
Most things are as expected from any PC and I haven't had any issues at all really, but I want to make sure I'm maintaining and protecting it so I can continue to use it for a very long time.
However there are a couple of things I'm not sure about or confident with and would appreciate any pointers.
  1. Do I need to try and find the website for each individual part to look for updates? Does the Windows update service do this by itself? Should I have a spreadsheet that outlines everything with a link to each manufacturer website?
  2. How do I know what settings to use in games? I have just been using whatever the game's best preset is but I feel like I could get more out of my graphics, my monitor is a limiting factor in this I will mention.
  3. With cleaning, if I use compressed air won't that just kinda blow it into all the other parts? Do I disassemble it partially to blow the dust out of everything?
  4. Is antivirus software (currently have Norton's whatever ridiculous package, they had really great customer service what can I say) worth it? I sometimes download mods and content from difficult to vet sources so I was concerned but unsure.
Thanks so much if anyone has time to respond lol I appreciate it.

2024.04.07 01:19 nickccal Kaspersky? What is the best option I'm trying them all

I have been looking for a solid antivirus since I got my new gaming laptop a couple of weeks ago. I used to use Windows exclusively and even did computer repair and security for other people. But that was more than 20 years ago, and I know a lot has changed.
I do want to be clear about one thing. I don't want to use Windows Defender. I know that it does a decent job, but I don't like the idea of Microsoft utilizing my data more than it already does. Plus I want to use a system that is developed by a company that focuses on security -- not one that adds it on as a free service.
Here is a quick synopsis of what I've tried thus far.
So, what thoughts do you all have? Please don't suggest Windows Defender as it's really not on my list due to the way Microsoft handles/shares data. I want a solid security platform that includes an integrated Firewall and isn't a total resource hog (I understand there will be some drag on the system no matter what with an AV program). Thanks in advance.

Got an email with a receipt from PayPal and this company thanking me for my order??
Obviously Iā€™m noticing now that they did not address me, they said ā€˜Kindlyā€™ and also capitalized the k in the middle of a sentence, and some of the sentences in the invoice make no sense. But this is the first time Iā€™ve got an email like this and I understand now how itā€™s so easy to get scammed! I was about to call the number provided until I remembered I deleted my PayPal account last year, and I even went on the app and confirmed it. Do I just ignore this email? How to stop these PayPal email receipts?

2024.03.31 13:54 NTRhentai Should I be concerned about these emails?

Today, when I opened my Gmail account I saw 2 emails saying I "renewed" a subscription (one of the emails was in the Spam folder).
One was dated March 19, 2024 and the other was dated March 29, 2024. Thinking it was a spam or phishing email I quickly deleted those emails. But a little worried, decided to open those emails ( I didn't click any links or open any files attached to those emails).
Upon zooming in on the PDF file attached to those 2 emails (without opening it), I saw that the files attached was from Norton LifeLock thanking me for "renewing" my subscription for Norton (pdf file on March 19 email) and in the second email dated March 29 was an Invoice confirming that the order has been processed and 'I" have upgraded to a 1 year antivirus plan.
In the invoice, my Gmail account was put as the recipient.
The issue is that ever since 2021, when I created my Gmail account mentioned in the invoice and bought my PC, I have never used Norton as an antivirus software so I find it weird that those emails were sent to me.
I also checked the purchases and subscription of my Gmail account, but it showed no purchases and subscriptions so I genuinely believe that this was just a scam.
There was also a number in the PDF file that says: "Please contact us at number to report if the transaction was not made by you". This is the number in question: *one (eight five five) five two eight-three seven nine one*
I don't know if this is legit or some kind of scam to get my credentials, and I do believe this is a scam but there's nothing wrong getting advice from people that are more knowledgeable in this than me.
Ty in advance for the advices.

2024.03.23 00:40 SlimVIII [HOBBY/REVSHARE] Looking for passionate developers and artists to help bring a full version of a Risk of Rain 2 style game about antiviruses to life.

This game is set in a digital landscape where viruses are trying to invade the owner's computer. You (the antivirus) have to stop them at whatever cost. The OS will assist you by spawning weapons for you along with overall just assisting. There are several different characters inspired by different antiviruses. Graphics will be 3d, probably similar to Lethal Company or Risk of Rain 2. Music will take inspiration from Doom, Ultrakill, and Risk of Rain 2 (Yes. We took a lot of inspiration from ROR2).
We currently need: 3d modelers, riggers, Audio designer, VFX artist, and a community manager. If you or anyone you know has any experience in any of these it would be amazing if you reach out. (We honestly could use anyone's help who knows what they're doing.
This is the basic premise:
ā€œBobā€ is the owner of the computer, Bob, like a lot of us has clicked a suspicious link, and now has a virus. Thatā€™s where you come in, Firewall/Norton/Avast/McAfee/AVG/Bytes/Bit/etc.! Your job is to protect the computer from the attacking virus by going into the system and literally tearing the attackers apart in a Risk of Rain 2 style FPS. Complete stages, protect nodes (computer parts), slay worms, malware, viruses, Trojans, Backdoors, and more, all while keeping yourself from corrupting. But of course you wonā€™t be traversing these landscapes completely by yourself, I will help plant gear and upgrades around the map for you to increase your resistance during your battles. Good luck! - OS
For those interested you can find the (super buggy) gamejam version at: Firewall: Gamejam Version
Currently the team consists of me (leader, programmer, game designer) and another programmer. Neither of us do art or music. If anyone has free time, a passionate game dev, is looking for a project, or likes the idea. PLEASE message me, Reddit and Discord are both fine. Discord username is: Slimeight
We have several ideas for this game, we just need help bringing it to life. Hopefully we can get early access out within a year.

2024.03.22 05:07 eoepls Piracy in Shallow Waters

I think Iā€™ve been pirating games since I got my first PC. I buy most of the games I like and value as much as I can. Everyone has their own reasons for pirating games. Mine is that I play too many games and canā€™t afford to buy them all. Anyway, Iā€™ve been going about my pirate life for years without much of a problem until a few days ago.
By the way, I usually didnā€™t use antivirus. Without knowing what the reason was, my Gmail account was hacked and all my information was reset. So my Gmail account, which is where all my online presence is tied to, was gone. And I realized that my Binance account was also hacked through Gmail and all my assets were stolen, even though I have 2FA on both my Gmail and Binance account. And the thing is, I have a PC where I do all my work and I donā€™t have another PC. So I had all my bossā€™s info and stuff. And the assets on my Binance account were actually assets that my boss wanted me to transfer.
Meanwhile, too much antivirus was detected on my PC. After I lost everything, I formatted the PC and bought Norton 360. Now I am scared to death to download any pirated game. It seems too risky to have all my work and accounts and pirated games in the same place. So I tried to use Windows Sandbox but it didnā€™t work because it didnā€™t keep the files. I have seen other sandboxes but they were too performance-degrading. Would it be safer to create a second user account that is not admin? I know MegaThread is safe but nothing can be 100% safe. What are your additional security measures?
