The Love Tunnel

2024.05.15 15:31 casefilesofVJ The Love Tunnel

-Jack
Every kid growing up in Gympie in the early 90- 2000s knew about the Love Tunnel.
The love tunnel was located over the hill from the skatepark on the Riverbank. It was a massive storm water drain filled with spray paint and lore unbound throughout the generations; the glowing dick, whose name is the furthest in, the people who live inside, the bull shark that lived under the bridge just outside, all that fun stuff.
It collapsed in the late 2000’s in a flood and was eventually rebuilt, but it was all fancy, modern, safe and not the same. Back in the day it had decades of graffiti, crumbling cement, jagged metal pole framing bent and jutting out from the sides. You know, real character.
I remember when I was just a kid at the skatepark and I spotted a bunch of other kids at the metal grating of a drain. I joined them and gazed down a few metres to some older teenagers, they had trekked through this “love tunnel” under the massive hill all this way. Badass I thought. LEGENDARY.
I talked about it at school, about this mysterious “love tunnel”. It was in view from the road when I crossed the bridge everyday on my daily commutes from the backseat of mums car.
I would gaze down at the weir and see the top of the love tunnel, sliightly hidden from view by a hill. It fascinated me.
I learned all these mysterious tales; this person slept with this person there, someone took a dump at the entrance and some other girl stood in it and now she had a nickname, someone found needles, another found a homeless woman and she screamed at them. I was pumped for the next weekend. I was going to go see it for myself.
I saw too much.
Early Saturday morning I was riding my push bike through town and toward destination adventure! I started out at the skatepark, met up with a few of the regulars, a mix of 5-19y/o everyone on the half pipes and ramps had a code of comrady that I've never found in a public place anywhere else and you always had someone to hang with.
My usual crew slowly arrived through the morning, a bunch of other 10/11 year old misfits like myself and we headed on our first place on our journey, Hungry Jacks. Now we never technically stole, we found a loophole…
One or two would order a stunner meal, then we'd take privilege of the free refills and fill up the empty plastic 4L juice jugs that we all had prepped in our backpacks. Coke and red Fanta for days.
So we got our supplies and headed behind HJ, past the volleyball courts and headed down a bush track down to the river.
We walked along the banks to loop back down to where the bridge was, we passed a few teenagers fishing and a couple other groups of kids swinging from rope swings into the water or huddled in groups smoking things they shouldn't.
We eventually arrived at the weir and the stormwater drain that I had been so intrigued by. The Love Tunnel.
Climbing up the hill and seeing it up close when you were just a tiny human. It was like staring into the dark abyss of hell.
There was a small stream of water flowing out of the big grey cylinder and it was covered in multicolored quotes and crude pictures that was very eye opening at the time.
Our voices echoed as one by one we climbed up the grassy, eroding clay edging that was the makeshift path into the mouth that probably changed each time it rained. Each of us had pulled out clumps of grass that we thought were handholds. If you fell, you fell down an embankment of slippery jagged rocks poking out from the fast flowing river.
So were inside and began to walk a couple of metres in then around us the light abruptly disappeared into complete darkness. And I remember the way the sounds traveled you could feel it through your chest it was mesmerizing.
I remember bravely stepping into the darkness and taking five or six steps in. That thick darkness was something else, I ran myself back to that entrance and light, heart pounding from the adrenaline.
This turned into a game of who could go in the furthest. This stopped when one of the boys screamed out from the darkness in pain.
He was back in the light teary eyed a few moments later wet on one side and feigning a laugh. He'd slipped down and cut open his knee, it was hilarious. We teased him saying he was going to get gangrene and leprosy and a myriad of other ailments we had no idea actually was.
We decided to bail, we forgot torches, we didn't plan that part out too well, and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon being little menaces.
We met the next day with a game plan, we had an array of various sized torches, from small ones that didn't do anything, one of those giant rectangle ones that was our main light source, a couple of handheld ones, one which flickered and the other stopped working before we even got into the tunnel.
We got in safely and tested out our torches and began walking into the unknown. It was pretty much the same as before, but there were strange things, old makeshift bongs, shopping bags, random shoes, a shopping trolley, a mattress that was all moldy and rotted. I still to this day do not understand how people managed to get that shit in there.
We passed a section where someone had thrown a can of red paint all over the walls, the amount of those ‘S’ symbols was more terrifying.
We saw light up ahead, we were passing our first grate. It was kind of daunting looking up towards it. Even getting on each other's shoulders we couldn't reach. There was an array of broken beer bottles and glass was everywhere, under the grate was a dead snake amongst some debris.
We had a debate whether to go further, we ended up going on at least until the next grate, we came to a fork, one seemed like a smaller offshoot so we stuck to the bigger side.
There were more offshoots and we came to a part where the big pipes split off into three under another grate. We gazed up hoping to get an identifier of our location, but all we could see was blue. We called out to see if we could get anyone's attention.
“Cooooweeee” we shouted in unison, the sound echoing in all directions.
We were laughing and having a grand time until something shouted back, something that still shakes me to my core to this day.
Some yobbo crackhead chick in her fifties with this ratty pink tank top that was all stretched half showing her saggy titties. “What the fuck you think you little cunts doing down here.” This chick screeched at us through her few teeth or something along the lines of that. She just exploded at us with a barrage of threats.
We were shocked silenced moving together to make one mass.
One of the boys screamed when a skinny guy emerged from the darkness. He was covered in tattoos with scraggly hair and a beard, he was all crazy eyed and pantless.
Someone yelled out to run and it was all the motivation we needed.
We could hear them screaming and the guy ran after us, we heard glass shattering behind us, they must have thrown a bottle. We were legging it.
We got split up in our running, I fell down, tripping over some rubbish, one mate stayed back to help me, this left us without a torch. We came across the same kid who slipped over yesterday, he had slipped down again cutting open his other knee. He wore those with badges of honor at school, but he was blubbering like a baby at this point.
He had the flickering torch and it disoriented us more than helped, as it turned on and off every time he took a step. I thought we were lost but we found the other grate, then eventually the entrance.
The others were already climbed down, we were soon by their side panting in the grass and wiping away our tears so the others couldn't see.
We ran back over to the skatepark and immediately told every kid we saw.
That was the wildest shit we had ever experienced. Sure we’d seen crazy up on the street but to have it jump out at you from the shadows in a storm water drain was next level.
By that night one of the other boys had spilled to his parents about our escapades and a couple of other mums got phone calls, three got in trouble, two of us didn't, including me.
I never stepped foot back in that tunnel, I swam at the weir more times than I could count afterwards though and never encountered anyone else too sketchy.
I think only a year or two later I saw on the news people dying in storm water drains somewhere else in Aus, we never realized how dangerous they could be back then. Lol.
Every party or get together afterwards it was a crowd favorite to bring up. It was a good conversation starter and joined the tales amongst my friends of the weird shit that happens in ‘Helltown’.
Growing up and looking back they were probably just homeless drug addicts freaked out from a bunch of children's voices yelling out coooweee from the underground where they thought they were alone. That would have scared the shit outta me if I was them.
Good times.
.VJ - in 2012 two women tragically passed away when they were exploring the tunnels and got swept away when a wild storm cell hit. Pictures of the upgraded version of the 'love tunnel' can be found in corresponding news articles.

Great Gable & Scafell Pike
On the afternoon of Sunday 26th into the bank holiday Monday, I plan on doing a 12 mile hike over the 2 days with a nice camping spot along the route.
I’ve been carefully putting together my gear to not only fit into my rucksack, but be light enough to not put too much strain on my back. Will the below list do me well?
  • 35 litre rucksack (1.25kg)
  • solo tent + footprint (1.5kg)
  • inflatable mat + pillow (850g)
  • sleeping bag (550g)
  • 2 litre water bladder
  • MightyMo gas stove + skillet (+ gas canister)
  • 600ml cooking pot/spork
  • dehydrated food pouches (2 meals)
  • power bank (10000mAh)
I have space for snacks and two bottles, I will have coffee sachets too.
I have hiking boots and trousers, with a waterproof lightweight coat. I’m considering hiking poles and small tripod too.
What are your thoughts on this kit?

2024.05.15 11:25 steeleypie Newbie plus a toddler - how does it work?

I’ve been through a lot of the ‘beginners guides’ in the wikis and links from various comments in the beginner threads which have been very useful, but I have some really practical (and probably very basic) questions that a lot of the guides don’t quite answer (or I haven’t got to that part yet!) or I still just don’t understand.
I’ve never camped before - apart from one night in my partners back garden when we were teens - and we don’t have a garden to practice in.
My child is 3 and most hotels/BnBs in places I’d like to visit are over £110pn, so I thought camping would be a great way to get out and explore much more. We also just got a car for the first time so we will be car camping and I’d like to start in a campsite with showers etc.
Our flat is small so we don’t have a lot of room to store lots of equipment. We have a storage locker so I can store some stuff away but I’m also nervous about buying tons of expensive equipment in case we end up disliking it and never using it again.
I’m not planning on cooking, just packing/buying sandwiches and snacks etc as I don’t want to buy tons of cooking equipment for reasons above (unless we genuinely love it and then it could change in future).
I’m lucky enough to be a SAHP so I feel like we could do tons of camping before my little one has to go to school. I just need to figure out how. I’ll also be doing this on my own during the week while my partner is working.
We’ll be travelling around South East England (UK).
Here are my basic questions:
We’re in England so the weather is often rainy. Can you fix a tarp over the tent to help keep the rain out without trees? Is there such a thing you can buy that goes over the tent? I keep seeing advice not to lay the tarp directly over the tent and to use poles, but what poles? I can’t figure this out. Is sealing the seams worthwhile to a new tent?
How do groundsheets work? Do you fix it to the tent somehow? My brain cannot understand this concept. Or if the tent comes with a footprint are they attached? Do you just peg it to the ground? Is there anything you should look out for on the ground aside from pointy rocks etc? Is it as simple as pegging it to the ground and the tent goes on top?
Sleeping - is it best to have separate sleeping bags and one double mat? Is that a thing? Or is it best to have two mats and two bags? Or should I go for 2 cots? I’m heavy (100kg) so I’d worry about it breaking.
Is a silk/cotton insert for the sleeping bag worth it?
Are there any tips/advice I need to be aware of with a toddler?
Since we are unlikely to buy cooking equipment - is there anything I haven’t thought of here? I plan to go to a supermarket to buy packaged food, bottles of water etc.
Despite not wanting to buy lots of ‘cooking’ equipment, is there anything that I should consider bringing aside from mugs or plastic plates dish soap etc?
Is it worth bringing a metal kettle/pot and oven gloves or something to heat water on a fire? Is a stove best to do this with rather than relying on a fire pit?
Do sites tend to have a place to wash up dishes etc?
Showering - do you tend to get dried in the shower cubicle? Is it big enough for a 3 year old to shower together? Would you go there in flip flops? What’s the best way to transport fresh clothes and shower stuff from the tent to the shower block? Plastic bag would do?
I plan to bring toys, battery twinkle lights, marshmallows etc to try to keep it fun. Torches and headlights etc. is there anything else non standard to consider bringing for a kid?
I’ll have our car to lock valuables away - is that enough? Do you have to ‘lock’ your tent when you’re away?
Is there any pearls of advice you could tell a beginner that isn’t covered by manuals, but that you learned through practical experience?
Is this a terrible idea to do on my own with a 3 year old as a complete novice? 😅
Sorry if some of these are simple, I worry and panic a lot about sometimes really easy concepts.
Thank you for any links, advice and thoughts. I really appreciate it!

Got my first Philodendron Red Emerald; I'm inexperienced, have some little questions
Hello!
I got this last week, looks beautiful, checked for care tips online and I'm doing them (watering, lighting etc.). But have some questions, would appreciate some tips.
1-The climbing pole -as I indicated with a red line done unskillfully on ms Paint- seems a bit short, and it is going up leftwards if that's a word, should I get a longer pole, add another one, or is it fine for now?
2- There are some red leaves that don't look like they will be doing well in life, should I cut them?
3- I see the leaf on top is a bit yellowish, is it OK? Or is it a sign of a problem?
4- Do you think the pot is small for this? At the bottom there are a lot of leaves that seem like they spread without pole support, is it OK?
5- I don't want to overwater it, I watered it last Sunday, with room-temperature drinking water from the bottle, until I saw some drops coming out of the pot holes below. Now its soil seems dry again, should I water it again- my house environment is a bit dry and I don't have a humidity machine yet.
Thanks!

2024.05.15 04:12 AssociateNormal5586 Decayed cactus & re-using soil?

Hey y'all, I recently had a beloved totem pole cactus get terrible root rot because, honestly it was just misguided care and not warm enough in LA. I tried to take the cactus out of the soil and cut off the decaying portions and let it dry before re-potting. Instead the whole thing just turned black and decayed instantly, which I'm sad about but also it taught me what advice not to listen to. Now I have some soil where the cactus is decaying in that is sprouting some sort of new life, which hasn't happened before in any of my other plants, especially given that they are on a balcony upstairs.
I'm not sure what's growing or what to do with it, but I want to give it a chance to develop, however I was thinking about using the soil that the cactus is in to re-pot a different desert plant/bush. Is this a terrible idea given that my cactus died, or would it give the soil more nutrients for the new plants? What do y'all think?

2024.05.15 03:55 idkwhatimdoing_247 My boss is unpredictably impatient and cold to me and the resulting anxiety is making it hard to function in and out of work. How long should I stick it out if I want to avoid starting over at entry level?

To preface, my boss isn’t all that bad when he isn’t being my boss. When he’s teaching me new concepts and has less things on his plate, it’s clear he cares about us learning new things and wants us to succeed. But when he’s stressed out about something, he often gets cold, impatient, and critical, and sometimes over things he wouldn’t criticize normally.
For example, he regularly encourages me to double check my emails to our partners with him or my more senior coworkers bc it doesn’t hurt and he’d rather I feel 100% confident than send out something wrong. But unpredictably, sometimes he will say, in a tone that implies I’m stupid, something like, “this is just a regular question, why are you even asking this?” I always preface my questions and emails with “I know , I am asking because _,” so it isn’t just me being lazy, and my teammates always say I ask good questions.
Or, sometimes when I explain things he says “when explaining this, let’s make it into a story about why the data matters. Take your time here and really walk me through all your thoughts and decisions!” in an encouraging tone, but when I presented to him one day after successfully using this method with him before, he said, “stop. STOP. In ONE sentence, what are you doing and why should I care?”
And finally, I regularly ask my team if they need help with anything, but after a hectic few weeks, we finally had some quieter days. On Thursday, he asked what I had on my plate and seemed satisfied with the amount of work I was doing. But then Monday after lunch, he pulled me aside and went “what have you even been doing these past 2 days?” In an angry tone. After seeming unsatisfied with my answer (working on the more casual short term projects that came in for me and some long term research that got pushed aside during the busy season) he said “Let’s make sure you have enough work because this sounds like nothing.” Meanwhile, my coworkers said they didn’t have anything they needed help with every time I asked and that everyone was enjoying the time to relax before it got busy again.
His unpredictability and inability to stay kind to me during busy times has made me extremely anxious about going to work everyday. I have never felt so much dread and I regularly feel stupid, incompetent, and excluded since he’s always so nice and casual to the rest of my team. I’ve been at the company for 1 year and 4 months now, and it’s my first job after college after having no internship or prior work experience, so im still very new to the workforce. The pay is really good for a first job in my field and I don’t think it’s that bad of a job, but I get so anxious about my boss that I’ll sit frozen over everything I do and waste precious time trying not to literally throw up at work because I’m genuinely afraid of him. Everyone else there loves him and I don’t know how to constructively criticize his management when I’m so low on the totem pole. How much longer should I wait before I leave?
TL;DR: boss is extremely unpredictable and is either really nice or really mean, how many years should I stick it out before I can escape entry level?

2024.05.15 01:00 DeadxSong SPECULATION - rumors about PW/OG/NB

With Honeywell’s impending acquisition of LenelS2 (expected to close q3), I’ve heard around the rumor mill (from some possible inside sources, but low on the totem pole, and also from every engineer speculating) that Honeywell possibly intends to sunset one of the 3 ACS products in the portfolio?
If it were you, who would you axe?
OnGuard, being a staple in numerous government/high security installations?
Netbox, being the most user friendly UX but maybe lowest market share?
Or the sleeper, ProWatch, your own child, albeit a terribly decrepit, barely alive monster.

2024.05.14 20:44 AggieAgDoc Extra part-time position (student)

I am a college student back home for the summer. I have a job that I enjoy and have worked there since high school. They have let me come back for the summer, but I am not getting a lot of hours since I’m low on totem pole now. Trying to find a flexible second part time opportunity as I’m saving up for next semester.
I am available all day Monday and Tuesday/Thursday mornings from 10-2.
I am looking for something physical; such as mowing, farm work, scouting, etc. Anyone need someone only one day a week or can be flexible as my schedule adjusts?
I do have a truck, but get horrible gas mileage so door dash is out.

2024.05.14 20:39 AdConscious6233 Easy Totems

Hey everybody, so i’m headed to EDC LV 24 in a couple days and i’m a little worried cause there’s a couple sets I really don’t want to miss and i’m concerned my group will not want to go to those sets with me. My solution is to make a little collapsible totem that will help them find me if I go solo to one of those sets. I bought a little 5 foot collapsible pole and just wanted some ideas as to what I could add to it that would make it still easy to throw in my hydration pack and things that won’t break off seeing as it will be in my backpack most of the night. I know I could jus throw a rubber ducky on the top with some lights and call it a day but I want something a little more creative. Sorry for the paragraph, thank you all, and happy raving !! see y’all at the basspod 😎

2024.05.14 14:41 Hot_Tub_Jim Version 3 Design - Custom Built Totem with Addressable WS2812 LED Lights on Leonardo Arduino Controller and Fairy Lights Wrapped Behind Hand Sewn Leather Wrap

Version 3 Design - Custom Built Totem with Addressable WS2812 LED Lights on Leonardo Arduino Controller and Fairy Lights Wrapped Behind Hand Sewn Leather Wrap
I’ve been building LED lamps and totems for about 15 years now. This is my version 3 design, which utilizes a globe with addressable LED tape on an arduino leonardo controller, and fairy lights that are embedded into a hand-sewn leather wrap. The globe has a screw-on adapter, so it can be completely removed from the pole for transport.
These things get absolutely beat on by all manner of drunken revelers, so I’ve had to tweak the design A LOT over the years to make it sturdier and more durable.
My friends are always able to find me at concerts and shows, and I meet all manner of strangers with these things.

2024.05.14 12:12 Lanae42 Please help me help my furball

Please help me help my furball
Thor
I am hoping the brilliant minds of Reddit can help me. This is Thor. He is an 18 month old void we adopted as rescue.
It was clear from the outset that Thor has some quirks like how he was taken from his mother too soon and now using our sofa cushions to nurse and suckle on. He does not seem to understand how to play nicely and I am pretty sure that if I could get him hooked on a generator I would solve the energy crisis.
Has has now been part of our household and it has been a challenge and a half. But it seems to now have gotten to the the point where my fiancée is afraid of dealing with him for fear that she may get clawed or bitten again.
I am really trying to get him settles into his new forever home. Trying to get him to calm down a bit, understand what is acceptable play and/or at the very least try to get him to start using designated scratching posts instead of the two resident humans or the nearest chaisofa. But nothing we do seems to have any sort of remote influence on his behaviour.
Here is what we tried so far: * Made use of pole toys and thrown toys to make sure to keep limbs out of harms way.
* Do extended play sessions to try and tire him out before going to bed. I honestly do not know if this seems possible at this point. We played with him for 3 hours yesterday having him chase distances and he does not seem to let up.
* Try and show clear breaks when playing and not playing. Rewarding him for good play and visibly putting away the toys when play is over.
* In case we do get "attacked" with claws and/or teeth clearly pull away showing it hurt and sternly not "Gently" to the cat to indicate play was too rough.
* Tried changing the diet. Went for a higher meat lower sugar meat balance. It helped a tiny bit.
* In two instances he was so riled up and hyper that I had no other choice but to time him out in another part of the house. He was zooming the house (which is fine) but at one point jumped on the sofa and used my fiancée as an obstacle to run across. She still has a red clawmark on her forehead that is healing (absolutely not ok)
* Catnip. Both herb and liquid editions. Especially when trying to train him to scratch the designated scratching posts.
Currently also have a pheromone diffuser and sofa tape on order. I just do not know how to best approach this. I know Thor isn't malicious as I can see the body language. I don't want to resort to a spray bottle and want to give him the best shot at forever home. So if anyone has any further suggestions. Please help!

2024.05.14 05:54 PaleontologistKey571 Rant of a frustrated intern

THIS IS JUST A RANT
I just recently joined a small local law firm as an intern, and I'm miserable. I decided to intern before starting law school, and all the firms I applied to were notified about this matter. However, I'm ready to learn.
The first few days were okay-ish; people were "nice.". However, as the days progress, everyone just seems to have their own circle of "friends.". I do have someone to talk to too, a dude sitting next to me in a different row, and another dude who is sitting across from me.
I admit I made a lot of mistakes in my first few weeks, but I took all the changes as advice. I came in late due to vehicular issues or a Microsoft Word error. I thought it was okay as the others would come in late as well (the pupil of Chambers and the lawyers) and try ducking away from the boss's view (if he is in), then they would laugh about it among each other. However, I was advised otherwise by my superior. Now that I come an hour earlier than the others, I would read, scroll on social media, study, or whatever to pass the time until 9 am (work hour), and if I was late, I would inform my superior. Even during lunch time, I would be back as early as I could so I wouldn't be in trouble, but the others would sometimes be back 30 minutes late to the office, laughing away with their bobba tea in hand. I also apply to some Microsoft Word classes to improve my MW usage so I won't make so many useless mistakes and be a burden.
I was put under conveyancing, which I had never studied before, so to prepare myself, I self-studied and hired a tutor to help me understand better.
Next, I realised I don't get to do certain things unlike the others ( Pupil in Chambers (PIC), certain lawyers/paralegals) . At first, I thought it was due to the fact that I was still new and just an intern. However, they get away with more things, but I get in trouble if I do them. What annoys me is that some joined the firm only a month before me, and they are already "buddy-buddy" with the lawyers.
Next dilemma: I was told that everyone was going on a work trip that week, which at the time I thought was just the bosses and the executive lawyers, but it turns out it's everyone, including the staff and pupils in chambers. I was stuck with a lawyer who chose to stay behind. OFC, I had some issues with MW, which I tried the hardest to research on Google, YouTube, and even call some friends for help, but to no avail, and I was upfront about it to the lawyer I was aiding. Obviously, I got in trouble the next week when my supervisor was back. Hence, I applied for courses after working in MS so I could enhance my skills and be useful to my superiors, so I wouldn't get that resentful and disappointed look from my superiors. Also, I didn't get to do anything that day; heck, I even asked people in the office if they needed any help (desk to desk , email and text, but was sadly ignored) .
When they got back from the trip, I realised they were closer to each other—heck, even with the bosses. I tried making friends but I seem to be getting ignored except by those 2 guys. Hence, I speak to the lawyers in a formal way, even though the secretary told me it was okay to talk on a first-name basis. I won't do so until they tell me it's okay, even towards the firm's secretary.
During lunch, I am lonely too. They would go eat together (except for a few who decided to stay behind to eat or chill in the office), and I was never invited, unlike when I was on my first day. Most of the lawyers are ladies (late 20's to early 30's, I think). From experience, women tend to be meaner to other ladies if you are not up to par with them. However, in the past, working with men was a different story; they were somehow more welcoming and pleasant to work with.
This morning, I got told to stop speaking with one of the PICs because she was trying to "concentrate.". Bitch gets to laugh and talk as loud as she wants when others are working but I can't? I use my earphones to muffle the sound if things gets loud. I used to be excited to come to work, but now I feel dread. I was contracted to be with the firm for 4 months, but now I somehow slightly regret joining the firm. I don't want to quit because its barely been 1-2 months, and I don't want to be a pussycat by crying about it or quitting (despite wanting to cry in the toilet stalls during lunch break).
Also,I don't always get tasks to do; I feel isolated, and everything I do seems to never be good enough. Despite all of this, I somehow still have the urge to learn and be helpful. So I filled my time studying and out of trouble. I try so hard to behave and do my work right so I won't be picked on or chastised by my superiors. Im getting diarrhoea thinking about it. The bright side about this firm is that they're pretty lenient, unlike other firms.
I know I can be a problem, so I try to mend my mistakes. The advice and feedback help, and I stay in my lane. What I understand is that I'm an intern at the bottom of the totem pole, especially given the fact that I'm not in school yet and that I'm slightly older (started later due to COVID). To them, I am a dog, and when they tell me to bark, I bark. Since I will be a dog for the next 4 months, I decided to be a Golden Retriever—helpful, friendly, and always ready to please and learn. I am learningto learn by showing a brave face and cry at home. I have to walk off the pain and all fo this will be just a memory. Luckily, the pay is good, and I need this for CV purposes.

2024.05.14 04:16 moderndaywizard956 Fallout New Vegas (season 2 fanfiction

2296, The scene is set in a post apocalyptic Mojave desert, 15 years after a joint effort of the New California Republic, the Rangers, and the mysterious benefactor of the New Vegas Strip, Mr. House pushed back an attempted invasion of the Mojave and a final battle was waved for control of the hydroelectric powerhouse, Hoover Damm.
In the aftermath, Mr. House was removed from power discreetly, due to the actions of a wasteland wanderer on a mission for revenge, known only as the Courier. Mr. House's iconic Lucky 38 casino opened its doors, for the first time, offering a single floor casino and bar, it's upstairs remained an exclusive and mysterious meeting place for the New Vegas Strip's elite. The Lucky 38 represented one of the cleanest, most secure facilities, protected, like the rest of the strip, by the Securitron Mk 2, predominantly. Their presence ensured visitors on the Strip behaved themselves, though the other casinos maintained their own security and 'house rules' internally.
The Strip defined and maintained its status as an independent entity, determining through the Courier's observations that the NCR was stretching it's military might too thin, and couldn't realistically manage over the Strip and Mojave, so a new deal was struck, similar to the prior, but with The Strip extending it's Securitron security to enforce the immediately surrounding communities and a few outlying satelites. Trade to the surrounding areas increased, the Mojave benefitting from the prewar tech, pre-programmed security forces. The drug addicted fiends and other Raider groups would never be any match for their advanced weaponry, and ultimately were cleared out of existence.
The King's continued to watch over Freeside, making alliances with the Follower's of the Apocalypse... their desire to service the needs of the belittled, disadvantaged and destitute lined up, and this is where Mr. Wolf found his place in the story... the Courier and a Follower's doctor found love in the wasteland.... and raised a child together under a Ranger's flag... 23 years later? This is New Vegas...
A handsome man in a leather jacket sat in a dusty leather booth watching one of the girls dance on a pole, shaking her ass as bottle caps clinked on the stage in front of her. It was a swanky post apocalyptic casino strip club. A man in a leather jacket stood nearby, his hands crossed in front of his chest, "Kings" embroidered across the back in silver letters. A waitress approached him carrying a glass of some amber colored liquor, and sat it down at the half moon table. She lingered a moment in her lacey body suit, following his gaze up to the girl rubbing her tits in some older cowboys face.
"You don't get jealous seeing her like that, Mr. Wolf." The girl bit her lip and met his eyes as he picked up his glass and swirled it before giving it a smell and taking a slow swig. He tilted his head looking her over. She couldn't possibly be older then 19. Tight, perky little thing.
Mr. Wolf smirked and shook his head. "I like her... nice and wet when she comes to my bed."
The girl blushed and bit her lip. "So you like to watch?" She surmised.
"I don't mind, but why do you ask?" Wolf had these intense eyes that shot arrows into your very soul. It made her incredibly nervous... but she found it deeply exciting at the same time.
"Well... I'm living in 206 now... maybe... you might stop by sometime and I could dance for you? I know I don't have her body but... if you wanted something that was a little fresher... something... just yours?" She figeted her fingers against the table.
Jason looked her over once more and smirked.
"Two-Oh-six, huh?" He tilted his head, considering.
She nodded.
"Leave your cum soaked panties on my doorknob one of these nights if you really need it and maybe I'll come see if you got the moves." His Texan accent was subdued, but enthrallingly charming with his confident, somewhat bored with reality overtones.
"M-my panties?" She stammered turning bright red. "On your doorknob?" Alexa couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"If you're gunna shoot your shot with a dom... with an alpha... you need to be willing to submit. If you can't do that... I'm not interested." Wolf shrugged, completely unphased.
"But what about... what if..." Alexa glanced at Laura, the clubs most iconic stripper in the club, perhaps even the whole Strip.
She was taking some NCR soldier to the VIP lounge for a private dance.
Alexa had been bold enough to offer herself but now she was feeling nervous. If Laura wanted her out, she could lose her job... her home.
"Oh she won't mind... if anything she'll want to watch." Wolf shook his head, sensing her anxiety.
"Assuming of course... she likes the way you smell... she's funny like that." Wolf let the conversation end and Alexa nervously retreated.
Wolf sat drinking by himself, but got bored.
"Jakey, go get yourself a drink and sit down, I'm bored." Wolf called to his body guard.
Jacob looked over and nodded, giving the lounge one last look around before approaching the bar and getting himself a mug of beer, from the tuxedo shirt and boytie bartender Gerald, and returning to the table.
"What's on your mind boss?" Jacob had his hair slicked back in the usual King's gang hairstyle.
"Heard any rumors lately?" Wold looked at him, taking a drag from his cigarette and flicking the pack over to him.
"Honestly, boss, aside from the occasional drunkard or fiend rolling through freeside, nothing out of the ordinary... well, except... a way's out.. the crazy lady... Gloria was swearing up and down she found a headless metal suit of armor.. said the Enclave would burn down New Vegas. God's wraith and all that, you know how she gets."
"Enclave?" Jason's attention was piqued.
"Yeah, I don't know, she was probably just in withdrawal from the Jet... said she found it in the hollowed out shell of the Super Duper, out by the old highway." Jacob shrugged and drank from his beer and pulled a cigarette from the pack.
Wolf finished the last drag of his own cigarette. "Has anyone validated her claims?"
"Well... no... but... I mean... you've met her, she sees things that aren't there, all the time." Jacob shrugged and lit a cigarette.
Jason squinted, considering the resident crazy ladies most recent half coherent ramblings.
"That's an oddly specific hallucination though....take a group of guys out there tonight... humor me, and make sure she's not right." Wolf lifted his glass.
"Sir?" Jacob raised an eyebrow, thinking surely this could wait until tomorrow.
"Hypothetically" Wolf pondered aloud, "If there was... for some reason, there in-fact was... a pre-war, piece of military tech out there....a T-45, let's say, or T-60, best case scenario? We want it. Even if it's not at 100% capacity? It's fusion core alone... could change up the game for Freeside, something like that could make our tiny little city independent. We wouldn't have to be reliant on the scraps of New Vegas, and forget about the Hoover Dam completely."
Jacob caught Mr. Wolf's drift.. a fusion core could mean producing its own, radiation-free water, it's own electricity.. not just a little, a lot. Powering long dead machines, not to mention the agricultural benefits... producing healthier, higher yield tobacco... expanding their income ten fold.
Jacob suddenly felt like he understood Mr. Wolf's vision for the future.
"I should... go and deploy the King's to investigate." Jacob concluded.
"I think that would be for the best, I can take care of myself here." Wolf waved Jacob off.
Jacob downed his beer and excused himself.
Wolf drank the rest of his whiskey, extinguishing his cigarette.
Laura, the dancer came up to the table, and Wolf motioned to the blushing new waitress for a round, who felt a twinge of jealousy seeing her crush with the most popular stage act in town. She bit her tongue though, bringing over two more heavy pours of whiskey.
Laura eyed the girl as she came and went.
"She likes you." Laura concluded as the waitress walked away.
"Yeah.. I think she does." Mr. Wolf shrugged, flicking her a cigarette.
"The NCR boy liked me." She giggled wiping a little bit of cum from her lips and used half her shot like mouthwash.
"Get anything out of him.. other then.. his seed?" Wolf sighed.
"Of course," She grinned mischievously, "Apparently there's been trouble out West with the Brotherhood. They had some type of skirmish? Apparently NCR lost? NCR was apparently holding some old world tech, I don't know, but apparently it lit up the west coast power grid, like... in it's entirely?" Laura tilted her head to look at him.
"The entire western power grid was lit up by a single piece of tech??" Wolf shook his head at the topless girl beside him.
"Yeah, I had to make him cum twice for more details, but apparently it's the size of a grain of rice, with quote, unlimited energy potential." Laura relayed the information. It seemed more important then a suit of power armor or its fusion core.
"Who else knows about this?" Wolf demanded with his eyebrows squinted against his eyes.
"Anyone with a functional light bulb for... like... three hundred miles?" Laura guessed with a shrug.
"You said... it was the Brotherhood that took the win on the skirmish?" Wolf clarified some details.
"Yeah... rumor has it they have a new up and coming knight that's making waves." Laura shrugged.
"Stay on the rumors... I need details." Mr. Wolf nodded at her, drank his whiskey and stood up, downing his drink.
An energy source that powerful would have a big effect on the balance of power in the Mojave. It could mean a resurrection of the New California Republic to it's former glory and then some, and potentially... might mean a renewed effort to reclaim the western part of the former United States, in time.
