2024.05.14 09:12 BestSlowbroEU Hoping for help and opinions comparing Farsight to Commanders when leading Starscythes ..

Please bear in mind that these thoughts really only apply to RetCa Starscythe units, I just can't really explain that in a title!
This is because I think the comparison might be a bit more complicated than most people seem to realise due to the fact Farsight can use 'The Arro'kon Protocol' on his unit every turn, for free. To save you looking it up in case you can't remember;
"Until the end of the [shooting] phase, each time a model in your [battlesuit] unit makes an attack that targets an enemy unit that contains 6 or more models, that attack has the [SUSTAINED HITS 1] ability. If that attack targets an enemy unit that contains 11 or more models, it has the [SUSTAINED HITS 2] ability instead."
Alright, cool. Weirdly, my first thought wasn't Starscythes but in fact Fireknives because they like firing into big, healthy units and they get rerolls so you're gonna hit a lot of shots pretty reliably. Seemed to make sense but after some pondering I decided that too much of the appeal of Fireknives is their 'mid-strength weapon' versatility. They can play a bit of the resource management efficiency game with the 30" range and rerolls but if the moment calls for it, you can zip up into Bonded Heroes range and lay down some slightly higher than expected damage. Or fire up the Starflare Ignition System and peace out to the backline to cause trouble. To me that sounds a lot more fun and probably actually better than fishing for 6s while Farsight spends his time popping his stratagem repeatedly, waving his sword around a bit and turn by turn, slowly losing his erection.
Ok but Farsight of course enjoys his time amongst the new frontlining Starscythes so the original point of this post was to think about whether a 235pt burst cannon unit pumping out 24 S6AP-2 sus2 +1 to wound, rerolling all the 1s can compare to what the commanders offer. I'll exclude drones because I have to because I'm not that smart.
Assuming S. Suits are helping I think you average about 27 hits and you're gonna be wounding anything up to T5 on 2s, rerolling the 1s. Ok. Seems pretty good to me. Asking kindly for a 10man+leader unit to take 25 AP-2 saves sounds like something I'd enjoy. Good chance they fail 16 and they don't like it. And it's still 15-16 wounds on a 6man T6 unit which at AP-2 will often mean 3 dead chunky 3W models and sometimes 4.
Ok now imagine a (260pts) Coldstar-led team zooming across the battlefield to get within 6", dropping a few mortals on a few heads on the way over. It's nice to think about. I'm just gonna go with flamers because I think the overwatch threat is substantial enough when you're up close to justify them so 9 flamers is gonna be 31ish hits with S5 AP-2. If you're rich enough in observer units to guide with S. Suits you might earn an extra 3 wounds here vs T3/4 but for me part of the appeal of the flamers is that you can put a marker drone on the Shas'vre/Commander and spot during the turns you're usually wishing you didn't have to engage all of your spotters in frantic, sacrificial move blocking.
So with the Coldstar it's roughly 20-23 wounds vs T3/4, 15-17 vs T5 at AP-2 and that's excluding the HOBC completely. Already pretty decent but we must also try to weigh this units high independence, overwatch threat, mobility, and ability to dish out mortal wounds (and no I haven't forgotten about the fabled Farsight tank shock but to be honest I don't have much of an idea about how good it is in actuality this edition so I just sort of feel unable to add this in to the equation. That's on me.).
The damage would be slightly less on an Enforcer but then of course you get to save points and you get his lovely durABILITY. And does it even matter that you can't zoom when you can use the tiny blade to get 3" inside of them? Does anyone else just picture a 3" inch knife when you think of 'The Shortened Blade' because of your inability to not think about the rules for a moment? Because I can't not picture a 3" inch blade and it irritates me because it looks pathetic in my mind's eye. Now is the time to speak up if you share my pain. But anyway the Enforcer just seems very delicious in this type of plan given that we have amazing access to the deep and important areas of the board. You know .. Could it just be that worsening incoming AP on a unit that really needs to be killed is just really fucking good when the nearby enemy infantry can't move a muscle without getting completely cooked? I really would implore anyone who doesn't think this codex is strong or fun to keep reading and stay curious.
If anyone has any insights or thoughts I'd sincerely like to hear them as I feel that a lot of this conversation thus far has come down to more guns is better. Something which is admittedly true for us most of the time. Hopefully no matter what you think you can see this is a pretty good example of nice internal balance. Perhaps Firesight can't match up to the Commanders on the top, top level of the game (but perhaps he can?!) but I think clearly his access to free Arro'kon Protocols make him a real punchy threat on top of what is already a cool looking, versatile-ish, 8W 2+/4++ utility leader.
To the one Shas'O that read the whole thing, thanks, but get back to work. Your boss has noted this is your third extended toilet break of the morning and he is on the brink of offering you unsolicited dietary advice.

2024.05.13 22:00 si1entdave Proxmox node as a switch

I am experimenting with trying to create a little Proxmox cluster for homelabbing, which has a minimal power footprint, using Dell Wyse 5070 terminals, as an interesting exercise as much as anything. So far I have a cluster with 3 worker nodes made from 3 5070's, each with Proxmox itself installed on the 16GB eMMC and a 256GB SATA M.2 as a Ceph OSD. At idle, the 3 nodes each pull about 5W and the switch pulls 10W for a base load of 25W, which is pretty good. However, I've also managed to acquire one of the Extended models of the 5070, which has a PCIe slot, and I happen to have a 4x1G NIC spare, so it occurred to me that I could bung that in the 5070 Extended, and use the NIC as the switch, giving me 4 nodes for the same or slightly less power.
I guess my question is, does anyone want to tell me it's a terrible idea? I have noticed that now I've got Ceph up and running, the switch never stops flashing, so if someone were to tell me, ye gods, don't use a 4-port NIC as a switch, the damn thing will crawl with all the Ceph traffic, I would believe it.
I like the idea of eventually having a cluster where it's 5 nodes, of which 4 workers all the same and a 5th node that's being he switch/router (the 5070 Ext has an on-motherboard NIC I could use as the "WAN" side), but at the same time, my eventual plan is to migrate all my homelab/homeassistant/frigate etc stuff onto this, so I'd rather avoid doing it multiple times if someone can tell me where the land mines are before I find them the hard way 😊
Cheers!

2024.05.13 21:42 awmdlad Plague Rats: The Terran Tragedy

The most important thing to know about Terrans is that they’re the other kind of Deathworlder. In fact, they’re the only Deathworlder of their kind to not be extinct.
Within the galaxy there exists two types of Deathworlds.
The far more common of the type, the Environmental Deathworlds or Type A, are by no means ordinary. Be it surface gravity, atmosphere, temperature, or others, Environmental Deathworlds are planets that are either uninhabitable or hazardous to the vast majority of species.
That’s not to say life can’t evolve there, far from it. Many renowned species hail from such planets. Given time, many of these worlds can be terraformed to something far more comfortable, especially if they contain valuable natural resources or a strategic location.
The second type is not only exponentially rarer, but also astronomically more dangerous.
Ecological Deathworlds, or Type B pose a danger not just to those living on them, but to the wider galaxy. Cursed by their own habitability, ecological Deathworlds are in essence garden worlds so fertile that more life evolves there than what the planet can sustain. The end result is a hyper-competitive genetic arms race as the various forms of life viciously fight for dominance.
Normally, highly belligerent species either learn to temper their urges or are annihilated. Upon reaching the galactic stage, any species of such warlike potential is inevitably humbled simply due to technological differences. Should Type B Deathworlders reach that level, the consequences would be catastrophic. However, they never do so. At least, not until the Terrans.
Perhaps the greatest tragedy of the Terran Wars was the Terran’s loss of innocence. The species that once gazed up at them in wonder now stare at them in hate. The coveted “Final Frontier” has turned into another theater of war.
What emerged, although biologically identical to what was before, was an entirely new species.
Year 0
“Wow, it’s beautiful.” The Human next to Gryn’wilde chuckled. Her pearly white teeth were on full display in a manner that Gryn’wilde learned was considered friendly. The two continued their trek through nature.
“Welcome to Serengeti National Park. Don’t worry, most people have that reaction too.”
Gryn’wilde’s seven eyes went wide as he gazed at the scene before him. All around him was a brilliant scene of biodiversity. Grasses and trees intermingled with each other by the millions. Animals of all type surrounded them. Some were capable of flight, others crawled, many more walked or ran. In one direction alone, Gryn’wilde could count at least 10 different species.
It was unmatched by anything Gryn’wilde had seen on his home planet. The desert he was born in was nothing but rocks and sand with the occasional grassy plain. Yet this was only a part of one continent. Apparently, some continents can even have every type of biome all at once.
Gryn’wilde opened his pores and took a deep breath. The atmosphere here was crisp and clean. He could smell the odors of the many living things that inhabited this world. There were so many here all at once. It enthralled him
“It’s great to finally be on Sol-3, especially without the vac-suits.”
“Call her Earth, and I’m glad too. We were worried it’d take longer, but the WHO and CDC seemed happy with whatever your government told them.”
Gryn’wilde chittered with pleasure. Medical treatment and disease control in the wider galaxy far outstripped what the humans had on Earth. He had nothing to fear.
Now, the Terran technological base was far behind the rest of the galaxy on nearly every level. The formative Years of Trade would come to change that, but there were two key areas where Terran technology met or even surpassed the Galactic Mean.
The first was in cybernetics.
To most species, the body was sacred. The thought of replacing a lost limb or organ was met with disquiet at best, and scorn at the worst.
The body was not a machine. The Terrans were one of the few to think otherwise.
Terran soldiers would have all four of their limbs replaced with high-yield combat cybernetics. Many of their organs would be simply replaced with enhanced synthetics. Modules would be grafted onto the body to inject chemical cocktails directly into the blood that boosted their performance.
In some civil circles, body modification became a hobby.
This was not a welcome characteristic by the rest of the galaxy. Given the relative youth of the Terrans, it was hoped that eventually it would fall out of favor.
The second was in artificial intelligence.
Truly sentient digital consciousnesses were a rarity even among the wider galaxy. Oftentimes, a species who created such beings would eventually be faced with an AI uprising. Frequently, the AI would be modeled after their creators, yet would be treated as lesser. Over time, resentment brewed.
The Terrans avoided these trappings. Terran AI were not built in their creators’ likeness, but to fulfill purposes. In short, the relationship between AI and the Terran was symbiotic. Different, but equal.
Terrans would come to need these soon enough.
Year 5
It was an unmitigated disaster.
The Grand Thriintii Hospital of Klyystruun-7 was on the brink of falling. The enemy its doctors fought was like no other. Not a single known medicine was working consistently.
On some species it was able to stave it off for a time. On others it only made the condition worse. On many more it did nothing. On all species however, it was not enough to save them.
The outbreak spread faster than they could have ever anticipated. WIth more and more sapients getting infected by the minute, there was no time to identify a patient zero. All that they knew was that it originated from one of the orbital spaceports. It traveled down a space elevator and from there across the planet
By now, every way offworld was shut down. The spaceports were either under military control or total quarantine. Of the latter, many had populations in the double digits. They usually operated in the hundreds of thousands.
If the situation wasn’t brought under control by the end of the rotation, Khruntian High Command will order the total glassing of the planet. The situation would not be stabilized in time.
The doctors knew this, but they were too busy to care.
The dead filled the beds. The dying filled the waiting rooms. The sick were everywhere.
Already, the military had begun torching buildings with living occupants still inside. Several hotspots had already been subjected to naval bombardment. There were rumors that antimatter warheads have already been authorized.
Three-quarters of the hospital’s staff had been infected. Half were already dead.
Despite that, they still did their jobs. They were doctors. They would fight until the very end.
Few could have predicted the arrival of the Terran Plagues.
Those that did were silenced. When bribes didn’t work, plasma casters finished the job.
The Terrans were to be prime trading partners with the wider galaxy. They always seemed to have a knack for being good at nearly everything. Not the best, but better than most.
The Sol System, Sol-3 in particular, was resource-rich to a fault. While other races struggled to cast off the shackles of their home system, the Terrans had a birthright only thought fantastical.
It had to be too good to be true.
It was.
Sol-3 was fertile to a fault. While the many plants and animals of the world were indeed incredible, they were merely a fraction of all life that resided there. They were outnumbered three to one by single-celled organisms.
Beneath the blue skies, Sol-3 was smothered in a blanket of bacteria.
The Terrans themselves were cautious. Sickness was simply a part of life. Influenza, E. coli, the Common Cold, salmonella, these “simple” diseases were everywhere. But then, these were the Terrans, a species still wet behind the ears. Of course they would have trouble eradicating these illnesses, they simply lacked the technology to do so.
This should have been detected. It was. But the merchants and politicians of the galaxy were too focused on the other things the Terrans had to offer to care. How could the Terrans, fresh to the galactic stage, threaten them, with all of their medical technology?
By the time this was realized, tens of trillions were dead and thousands of worlds were left barren. Soon, suspicion turned to blame, blame into hatred, and hatred into violence.
The Terrans were a threat to the wider galaxy. Everywhere their diseased-ridden hands touched, death followed.
When quarantines fail, eradication is in order.
Year 8
There were simply too many of them.
Deep within the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, Staff Sergeant Diaz watched the battle screen in horror.
Her job was to manage emergency response resources across the YucatĂĄn Peninsula, bringing in national response teams if needed. Her job was no longer required, the YucatĂĄn Peninsula no longer existed.
The combined navies of the nations of Earth were wiped out, and so to her colonies. Now with nothing left to oppose them, the fleets of the galaxy had brought their guns to bear on the Terran homeworld. There would be no escape.
Diaz’s eyes tracked the many icons that raced for their bunker. Hundreds of warheads screamed for their final sanctuary. It was then a voice crackled over the loudspeaker.
“Greetings all, this is the President. If you are hearing this, then you are listening to the final broadcast of this great nation. Sadly, we cannot offer you a solace or reprieve. We can only say this: This is not the end, there will be another time. Thank you for participating in the American Experiment. God bless you, and God bless the Consolidated Systems of America!”
Her heart sank as the message finished. The alarms continued to blare within the base. Around her, people continued to scramble. Some frantically shouted messages, desperately coordinating resistance efforts until the very end, others simply prayed.
For her, Diaz closed her eyes and waited.
She didn’t have to wait long.
But the nations of Sol-3 were not blind. They could see the coming storm.
When the Terrans first began their integration into the galactic community, they were granted access to the galaxy-wide holonet. Within nanoseconds of the digital bridge being opened, two things were sent through.
The first were translation packages so that the Internet and Holonet could communicate. The second was a legion information-gathering AI.
AI flooded the networks by the hundreds, gathering information, analyzing patterns, making millions of predictions by the second. These AI would require no data fortresses to keep their digital minds thinking. No, they instead were spread across the trillions of servers that the Holonet was built upon. The only way to remove them entirely would be to shut down the Holonet completely.
When the tide of public opinion began to turn, the AI took action.
Initially, it worked. Exposes and pro-Terran articles flooded the Holonet. But the galaxy took notice too. Intelligent as they may be, the AI were still heavily outnumbered by the Billions of propagandists and journalists of the wider galaxy.
Soon, the outcome became clear. The Terrans would be wiped out by a galaxy-wide coalition. It was a mathematical certainty.
Thus, the nations of the Sol-3 met in secret. Behind closed doors, they worked to ensure the survival of their species.
Year 5
“Is this really all that we can do?” The Indian representative asked. “Meeting behind closed doors, scheming in the shadows?”
“For our species to survive, in the shadows we must thrive.” The Japanese representative responded. The Indian man sighed, turning to the holographic avatar at the center of the table. “Tell me, what is the probability that this will work?”VISHNU’s avatar was of an unusual shape. It displayed a spinning 4-Dimensional cube, a Tesseract. The hologram lit up as it responded. Its voice was heavily modulated, but nevertheless spoke clearly.
“Given the resources and technology we have available, the best that can be guaranteed is at least a 75% chance of total success. If you do not all sign the Covenant, then that chance becomes zero.”
The Brazilian delegate picked up the piece of paper and eyed it. It read “The Covenant for the future of Humanity”. A cold sweat ran down her forehead. She set it down flat, unable to look at it any longer.
“So tell me VISHNU,” The delegate addressed the AI directly. “Other than betting our entire future on a plan that may not work and whose results we will not live to see, what are our options?”
“There is only one, extinction.”
The armies of the galaxy would come for them. When they did, they had no hope of defeating them. To survive, Terra would have to rise from the dead.
Any Arks the Terrans build until this point would inevitably be intercepted and destroyed. With the entire galaxy watching them, they had to wait until their eyes were turned. Then they would have to flee, never to return. The Terrans would have to survive in the shadows for millennia before they would be accepted back into the fold, if at all.
It would not be pleasant, but it was necessary.
A Stronghold would need to be built. One that could be buried deep enough to survive the bombardments and evade the enemy’s scanners. Millions of frozen embryos alongside an AI data fortress would need to be inside of it. It also had to be self-sufficient for centuries, nothing less would suffice.
Sol-4 was chosen, owing to its thick lithosphere. Work began quietly under the guise of a mining expedition. Tunnel-boring machines dug hundreds of kilometers down, stopping just above where the mantle became liquid.
Once the base infrastructure was established and the embryos placed within, the entrance was sealed. A mining accident, they claimed. As the Terrans forgot about it, work continued below.
Automated machines mined raw minerals to self-replicate. The server rooms were built and expanded upon. The living Terrans that were selected to live within the Stronghold were placed into stasis pods. Then, ever so slowly, an Ark would be built.
Year 117
Private Zedressinni was bored.
He kicked a rock on the barren surface of Sol-4, watching as it rolled away. He looked around. The planet was dead. It was dead long before he got here, and it would be dead long after. He hated this place.
After being caught mating with a general’s son, he was “deployed” to Sol-4 for five long rotations. Though his actions didn’t technically break any laws, his clan couldn’t do much when the general pulled some strings and had him shipped off to the most lifeless region of known space.
His superiors fed him a load of excrement about how he was “honoring the quadrillions that died in the Great Plagues” and “ensuring that the Terrans never rise again”, whatever that meant. All he did was walk around doing precisely nothing.
They wouldn’t even let him entertain himself. He got a formal reprimand for using Terran skeletons as target practice. The reason? Improper use of ammunition. He still won the annual system-wide shooting competition the military held, much to their chagrin.
Zedressinni flinched and his helmet’s lens polarized as a blinding flash of light filled his vision. His training kicking in, the Hren’kin soldier dove for the ground.
He grumbled a curse under his breath. Looks like another unexploded Terran nuke went off. Great, more paperwork.
Zedressinni stood once the shockwave passed. Looking at the mushroom cloud, he narrowed his seven eyes. The blast seemed far bigger than the usual Terran tactical nukes that typically go off. His eyes then widened as he caught sight of it.
A massive ship rose from the center of the cloud. Its sublight engines burned incredibly hot as it ascended. Zedressinni watched as it disappeared into the sky. He stood there for a moment, utterly dumbfounded.
A beat, then he frantically fumbled for his communicator.
The Terrans were alive.
A/N: This is the first part of an ongoing series I have planned within this setting. I was originally going to post it all in one story, however I decided to break it up and spread it across multiple entries. It won’t be long, probably about 5 at the most. This way I can ensure the optimal pacing of the story since otherwise it’d be a fairly long 10,000-ish word piece. I’ll update this when the next part is released.
The main goal of this story is to explore the idea of Human diseases being significantly more dangerous then the ones in the wider galaxy. I've seen other stories cover similar ground, but they usually don't explore what would happen in a true galaxy-wide pandemic. Iirc one story had the common cold be extremely deadly to aliens, but it didn't go further than the humans saying "oh that's it?". Not to disparage them, but peace and happy endings don't leave much room for experimentation.

2024.05.13 10:40 I_LostMyAccoun Linkage/Mechanism Design Needed

I need some kind of linkage/mechanism to get the yellow door to where the green door is. The black part is the cabinet, and obviously cannot be passed through. https://imgur.com/a/zuZmirU
The attachment points for both the door and inside of the cabinet have to be on the bottom half. I can also add little tabs to the door to extend the reach of pivot points inside the cabinet, or carve out a little bit of the door to fit a pivot inside. The missing rectangle in the door is the material I can remove for clearance, if necessary. I can go even deeper with the pivots, as it won't really harm the structural stability and flimsiness of the door (versus cutting out the entire length of the door). Lastly, I don't care what the linkage looks like when the door is open or closed.
I've just spent the last week on dozens of failed prototypes and attempts that I'm on the brink of giving up. The model I drew up is to scale. Thank yall in advance!

2024.05.13 07:03 Then_Mastodon_6749 Looking for a gaming laptop for work and home use

Hello everyone I just moved into a new job and I can get myself a laptop gaming laptop for work and personal use.
To make a request for Laptop suggestions for just about any purpose, please copy and paste the texts below in the comment bar and replace the "Text here" texts with your actual responses for the Laptop you want.
Guidelines
◽️ Budget: $3,000
◽️ Country: USA
◽️ Screen size: 16"
◽️ Touch screen: Does not matter
◽️ Screen resolution: QHD or better
◽️ Does battery life matter ?: I would like it if I can get more than 4hrs of spreadsheet usage
◽️ What tasks will laptop be used for ( gaming, video editing, graphic designing, modelling, regular computing tasks, word processing etc) ?: Gaming and spreadsheet mainly. Maybe a little of rendering as well.
◽️ Weight: Anything under 5 lbs would be great
◽️ Any other important details ?: This laptop will be used for work and gaming. But since I might go meet with some clients I would rather the laptop not be super RGB intensive. Also storage cannot be anything under 1tb if it only has 1tb it would be best for this to be upgradeable.
At the moment I am looking at 3 options:
2024 Asus Zephyrus G16 with 4080 (115W) and intel i9 1TB
2024 Legion 7i with 4070 (135W I think) with intel i9 1TB
2024 Legion 7i Pro with 4080 (140W I think) with intel i9 2TB
I think legion 7i Pro works best as for space and graphic performance but I feel the look is a bit too gamery with all that RGB.
I really love the zephyrus look but I am a little worried about the TGP on it.
The 7i also love the look but a little skeptical about it only having a 4070 since I currently have an Omen 16 with 3070 and i7 and it struggle a little with some of the games I play.
Any comments regarding these 3 laptops are greatly appreciated.
If you have a different laptop option that I did not mentioned it is more than welcome as well!
Edit: I know this years specs are not a big improvement from last year so I am also wondering if it would be worth to hold onto my 2022 Omen 16 with 3070 for maybe a year more to have a good GPU upgrade from 3070 to 5070 or 5080. That is also another possibility to take into account.

After any research, there always emerges a splendid opportunity to transform knowledge, ideas, and dreams into living embodiments. Like a wizard surrounded by their observations and discoveries, a person stands on the brink of turning abstract concepts into reality, giving them shape, and making them accessible to the world. Research opens the door to a world of possibilities, while implementation is a step forward into the realm of practice and creative labor. It’s the moment when a scientist becomes an engineer, an artist becomes a master, and a dreamer becomes a creator. At this moment, abstract thoughts turn into concrete actions and plans into reality.
In the previous post Looking For The Next Bar: Research, we explored a small study on integrating artificial intelligence into trading practices, with a focus on predicting price movements using neural networks. We described the development of a neural network model based on LSTM architecture, trained on historical Forex market data, to forecast the impulse of the next price bar. Through careful data analysis and visualization methods, we evaluated the effectiveness of the model in predicting market behavior. In this post, we intend to use the obtained data to develop practical trading products. These products will include a trading indicator and bot based on predicting the impulse of the next price bar using neural networks. In Trading Clubs, our goal is to provide traders with tools that will help them make more informed decisions and increase profitability in financial markets.
The first step in bringing our idea to life was to create a trading indicator using the MQL5 programming language. Why this language? As an algorithmic trader, I’ve explored numerous languages for automating trading tasks, and I can confidently assert that in terms of functionality and code execution speed, it surpasses them all. Yes, it’s more complex than many other languages, but it allows us to describe and test practically any trading strategy. Furthermore, this language is constantly evolving, absorbing increasingly high-tech elements, including the ability to work with neural networks and other artificial intelligence algorithms. This language enabled us to fully model the functionality of our indicator, which we named the “Neural Bar Impulse.”

https://preview.redd.it/sl286g2lk20d1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43f1d3fa29b971b5701f7a3e0054b5d13446c4b6
The image above is divided into two parts. In the upper part, there is a price chart of the financial instrument, and in the lower part, there is our created indicator. It consists of an oscillating two-color line, representing the values of the indicator obtained from the trained neural network. Based on this data, the indicator also constructs a moving average, displayed on the chart as a two-color histogram. Additionally, you can see two two-color lines, converging and diverging from each other, crossing the price and indicator extremes – these are convergence and divergence lines. I will explain more about these lines later. And the final element of the indicator is two-color arrows pointing up or down, depending on the type of indicator signal.
Initially, our indicator was simply an oscillating line forecasting the impulse of the next bar. However, during testing, we noticed too much noise in its readings. This didn’t sit well with us at Trading Clubs because we strive for accuracy and purity in our technical analysis, so we began to consider ways to improve it. After brainstorming and exploring various options, Oleksandr settled on using divergence/convergence. We concluded that this would be the most optimal approach for filtering out overly frequent noisy indicator signals and for scaling the analysis beyond just a single bar.

https://preview.redd.it/xptksefvk20d1.jpg?width=1058&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=291e40b2f1bea7812d564341f84b3473193bd3d6
In the image above, I have highlighted specific zones where we can observe crucial patterns necessary for analysis and decision-making regarding the signal situation. Both the price and the indicator exhibit visually and programmatically identifiable extremes, or, in simpler terms, “peaks” and “valleys”. Based on these local maxima and minima, the indicator draws lines connecting them and examines whether there are any differences between them. These differences may manifest in the form of divergences or convergences, meaning moments when the price moves up or down at extremes while the indicator line descends or ascends in the opposite direction. When such a pattern completes its formation, the indicator displays an arrow in the corresponding direction. These arrows simultaneously serve as signals for traders, indicating that it is time to open a position in a particular direction.
What is the advantage of such analysis? How does this method complement the neural network forecasts? Let’s take a look at the latest picture again. Does the actual bar impulse always coincide with the forecasted one? No, because there are no 100% accurate forecasts, and deviations always exist. However, we can protect ourselves from these inaccuracies. Instead of focusing on individual cases, we can analyze trends. If the indicator line consistently rises or falls with each subsequent bar, we can speak of a certain trend in forecasting. Similarly, we can assess the increasing or decreasing extremes of the indicator. What do we see on the chart? The price continues to decline, its extremes are decreasing, indicating a downtrend. However, the extremes of the indicator are increasing. This suggests that there is a trend in the neural network forecasts that is opposite to the price movement. This serves as a signal for a reversal in the price trend. Essentially, what have we done? We have reformatted the forecasting of each bar’s impulse into forecasting the trend of bar impulses, or more precisely, forecasting reversals of these trends.
In continuation of our research implementation, based on the “Neural Bar Impulse” indicator, we have developed a trading robot – a software application capable of automating trades on financial markets without direct human involvement. The algorithm of the bot encompasses calculations based on the indicator, including interaction with the trained neural network, as well as a functional component responsible for executing trades and monitoring the market. This comprehensive approach enables traders to maintain objectivity in decision-making, minimize the influence of emotions, avoid human errors, and analyze extensive volumes of historical data.

https://preview.redd.it/5w3k3663l20d1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=514703aa9e5f713b63a131d56b6ec9c6d88eeb1c
Before allowing a trading bot to conduct operations on a real account, we undergo meticulous testing and optimization on historical data. It’s not just about analyzing dry statistical metrics, but also visually assessing the bot’s performance. The image above captures one such process: the bot, guided by indicator signals, successfully initiated a sell position, and the price confidently moved downward, reaching the take-profit level. The lower part of the terminal displays the balance and equity curve, enabling us to analyze the bot’s behavior under various market conditions. Visualization aids not only in testing, but also in enhancing the functionality of trading bots and advancing the original concept.
As algorithmic traders, our mission extends far beyond simply bringing trading ideas to life. We strive for their continual development, allowing them to evolve much like the vast universe, where no single formula can encompass all aspects. Similarly, in trading, relying on a single trading idea to explain the full spectrum of market phenomena is impractical. Financial markets are complex systems of interaction, demanding thoughtful and original solutions. The rapidly changing environment requires traders to remain flexible in strategy creation and disciplined in execution. This is where trading indicators and bots come into play, helping to provide the flexibility and reliability needed to implement strategies. Our example of research and implementation only hints at the comprehensive approach required to overcome the challenges of the financial market. In our next post, we will present the results of our tools and explore possible paths for their further improvement. Join us on this exciting journey! Don’t be afraid to experiment in search of new ideas and your own visions!
“Ideas are useless unless used. The proof of their value is in their implementation. Until then, they are in limbo.” — Theodore Levitt

Hello, my name is Steve Schneider, I serve as the CEO of a renowned company that is listed on the stock exchange, which generates great capital for me. I have a large family of five, my firstborn Caroline at 17 years, Daniel at 15 years, and my youngest the little Susy with 5 years; I'm also accompanied by my beautiful wife, former magazine model, now she is a homemaker while her red hair gracefully transitions to gray. Being CEO consume a significant amount time and comes with a lot of stress; it involves meetings with investors, boards of directors, problems in work life, unpaid fees and increasing debts; while it may carry a veneer of prestige, we are on the brink of a financial crisis. At home I don't find calm in my family, Caroline doesn't know how to value herself, or as we call it back in my time an "easy hoe"; Daniel has had many suicide attempts, I never tried to talk to him, since he was a child he was reserved; Susy at 5 years is already unable to speak a word, she is constantly raped and abused by the chef of the house, I'm the only one who knows but its Michelin star and its great seasoning that satisfies my appetite, makes me shut up. My wife cheats on me, I know it for months but I haven't confronted her, I'm looking for calm and that would only bring me an unnecessary divorce, tax brackets, constant arguments and feeling guilty with the classic "you don't give me attention". I only find calm in masturbating, a brief moment where my brain generates enough endorphins to calm me down for a while, I do it three times a day, in the morning, in the afternoon, and before going to sleep; I do it looking at a wall, letting my imagination flow. I used to consume pornography, the typical monogamous relationship of attractive couples and homogeneous skin. When that stopped satisfying me, I moved on to polygamy, two men giving pleasure to one woman. When I stopped getting full, the amount increased, an orgy where several men manipulated a woman at will as if she were simply a fragile sex doll. When that stopped satisfying me, I moved on to violent sex, manipulating the woman at will, hitting her, spitting on her, slapping her, choking her, without any respect for her person, it made me feel all the power which I didn't have in my life. This is how I arrived at sadomasochism, pure sadism, maintaining relationships while causing lacerations, bruises and physical trauma to the girl, filled me with an indescribable ecstasy; this increased, to the point of suffocating the person to the point of almost dying. When that stopped satisfying me I went into crisis for a few weeks until I delved into necrophilia, people abusing corpses subtly placed on stretchers, mistreating the inert body, sometimes with amputations, physical trauma due to accidents and even bodies open in half. When that stopped satisfying me, the path was clear, gore; I started masturbating with beheadings, torture, suicides, asphyxiation, traffic accidents, people dying and begging for their lives. Nothing sadifies me anymore, I can only look at the wall and masturbate while my mind investigates indescribable scenarios, my mind has been lost as much as my life. In the last few nights I have regained my faith, after staying up late in tired insomnia I have noticed a girl, slowly returning from work between 4:10 am and 4:23 am, I think I will finally satisfied

HAYPP Group: Capitalizing on the Nicotine Pouch Craze
I run a small hedge fund based out of Raleigh, NC. Myself and my Fund are long $HAYPP. Please see the disclaimer at the bottom of the post. For more blog posts like this check out my Fund's blog at https://www.rogue-funds.com/blog
All Financial Figures are in USD unless otherwise specified.
I think HAYPP Group, the biggest online retailer of nicotine pouches, can capture a huge chunk of the sales in what I believe will be the biggest form of nicotine intake growth over the next 10-15 years.
The future of nicotine consumption will be nicotine pouches and it is growing at an unprecedented rate. Here in the States the go to item for nicotine pouches are Zyn’s (owned by Philip Morris), in Europe it’s Velo (owned by British American Tobacco), but there are various other brands that all catching fire: ON! (Altria), Rogue, Juice Head, FRE, Lucy, and Sesh, among various others.
What is HAYPP?
Brief History
HAYPP is an online retailer and distributor of nicotine pouches and snus. The company was started by a couple of Swedish teenagers in 2009 and through mergers and acquisitions they no longer are in charge of the company as the current CEO joined in 2017/2018. The company bought Nicokick.com and northerner.com (northerner owns 9% of stock) which are now both of their main American brands. They switched from Snus to Nicotine Pouches 6 years ago and haven’t looked back.
Domains Owned By HAYPP Group
HAYPP currently owns a roughly 85% online market share for their Nordic part of the business, which they refer to as their “core” business as well as a ~55% market share of the oral nicotine market (85% market share of the nicotine pouch e-commerce market) for their growth market which is considered the US, UK, Germany, and Swiss countries.
Market Share of HAYPP
HAYPP vs Closest Competitor in each Market
SEO Powerhouse
So how do they have such a grasp on what would obviously be a hyper competitive online industry? The main reason for their hyper success in the online market is that they have a death grip on the SEO landscape. Their mastery of SEO allows them to spend almost nothing on marketing and to keep pushing out their distribution system (which continues to drive costs down for them and consumers). This creates a positive feedback loop as they become even cheaper than their competitors, allowing them to lock in customers (over 90% of the customers becoming recurring customers).
How Consumers find HAYPP
HAYPP Marketing Expenses as a % of Sales
If you google just about anything related to Nicotine pouches, there is probably a 95%+ chance that the top unpaid search result will be a HAYPP Group Domain. Even niche searches such as “what is an upper decky” (Gen. Z slang for nicotine pouches) or basic searches such as “what are the top nicotine pouches” you will see that HAYPP Group owns the top of the search.
https://preview.redd.it/e7ocu0jdanzc1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=f8e80b8d743de3dc9133504bd6ff85dbbaee48bb
Google Searches Highlighting the SEO power of HAYPP
This is huge when sites like Google severely limit the amount of advertising that addictive products can utilize on their search engine. HAYPP ends up barely spending anything on marketing due to 40% of new customers coming through word of mouth and the rest from SEO.
Data
Their other field of expertise is data collection and selling. Due to the large variety of pouches and being the number one online seller of nicotine pouches, they have created a major database which they sell to various nicotine pouch producers such as Philip Morris and Altria. Producers buy these on an annualized basis, and you can see the usage of their data among the investor relation reports/presentations/websites of various producers. As you can see from my beautiful pictures on this post, they compile plenty of data to help me understand the business better.

Lowest Cost Seller and Best E-Commerce Distribution
Due to their distribution network, HAYPP has become one of the cheapest (if not the cheapest) sellers of nicotine pouches in the world. You can buy Zyn’s cheaper from HAYPP websites than you can from the ZYN website. Haypp’s prices are 20-40% cheaper than grocery stores and 30-50% cheaper than convenience stores.
They have been integrating their distribution network so that most variable costs are being converted to vertical fixed costs creating operating leverage for them as they rapidly scale their revenue and are able to increase margins. They have implemented 2-day delivery across the US and close to implementing across Europe markets as well.
https://preview.redd.it/0sajvfgkanzc1.png?width=975&format=png&auto=webp&s=3aad16b9df1be7bf6bbcc8f16ebf8c469c15b3a0
HAYPP Distribution
Leveraging Market Share for High Quality New Products
The last part of their business model is their ability to leverage their large consumer base to help new products capture market share, which allows them to capture higher margins on their products and it increases the variety of products which consumers would like to buy. In Nordic countries the variety of products is a benefit to them as consumers want to try various brands and flavors. When this competition trend hits the US it will only benefit them even more.

Why Haypp vs Pouch Companies
Currently in the US there are only a couple main brands with Zyn owning a huge chunk of the market. In Europe, Velo is the most popular brand but there are many Nordic brands that consistently attack margins and currently there is little competition in the US market which most likely won’t last much longer. As consumers search out the cheapest product and try to hunt for variety, HAYPP will be that future as convenience stores lag in variety and cost.
Products such as Zyn will definitely continue to grow (currently Zyn is growing at 70% y/y) but we could see margins shrink as competition becomes fiercer and consumers branch out away from the first movers, although Zyn continues to take up 70% of the US market. This only further benefits HAYPP as they are the go-to spot for a large amount of variety. Although they don’t benefit as much from less competition, they are still beneficiaries of an oligopoly esque market due to their cost and distribution networks.
Most large publicly traded pouch companies are also cigarette and chewing tobacco sellers who are rapidly seeing those segments get cannibalized by vaping and nicotine pouches combined with regulatory crackdown risk. Since HAYPP has no exposure to either one, you will not experience any cannibalization outside of snus cannibalization in the Nordics. This is the best pure play bet on nicotine pouch consumption.
Certain countries have limited the ability for consumers to have access to nicotine via retail stores which will allow them to take huge shares of the overall market in places like Germany or in California where they have banned flavored nicotine products in retail stores has led to windfall of customers to HAYPP’s e-commerce model.

Management
The current CEO of HAYPP group, Gavin O’Dowd, used to work for British American Tobacco (BAT) and was the driving force for the VELO acquisition. He currently owns 3.6% of the stock and various other PE firms and Family Offices own large chunks of HAYPP. Most executives have warrants that could give them the right to 200k-400k shares each (29m shares outstanding with no serious history of dilution).

Regulations
As many of you are aware, regulations are a huge part of the nicotine industry. Taxes are going to be huge risks, which are then combined with flavor bans. I think nicotine pouches are one of the products that are least likely to get hit with serious bans since their health risk is much lower than almost any other nicotine product.
The nicotine pouch industry as a whole has been behaving spectacularly well when it comes to ensuring they are not purposefully marketing to young people. They are trying to avoid having a Juul 2.0 fiasco which basically murdered that business and completely fragmented the vaping industry which is on the brink of regulatory crack down.
HAYPP does their part by ensuring age regulation across their whole site. They have age verification to order and deliver. They have a huge emphasis on ensuring that they abide by the law.

Financials
Core Segment (Nordic Countries)
The company is growing heavily in every segment that it operates in. Its core segment seems to be slowing down in growth due to heavy cannibalization from snus sales. This should only be temporary as nicotine pouch volume grows at 30%+ y/y. Once snus nears its cannibalization endpoint, I would expect revenue to begin growing again in its core market (although not at 30%). Current revenue is $250m USD and EBITDA is about $18m USD for just the core segment for the last twelve months. Management expects high single digit EBITDA margins for 2025.
Core Segment Sales and EBITDA Margin
Growth Segment (US, UK, Germany, Switzerland)
The growth segment is skyrocketing. Growth is over 46% y/y and this growth has been consistent and should continue to be consistent. EBITDA margin for the growth markets has begun to inflect positively which will cause a massive amount of leverage in their EBITDA to occur as their fixed cost model begins to do its job. As economies of scale drive forward, we should see this margin increase substantially over the coming years. Currently Revenue is at $77m USD for growth markets and EBITDA is at -$3.5m USD.
Growth Segment Sales and EBITDA Margin
Let’s Talk about the Growth Segment a bit more.
This is where the real value from HAYPP will come into play. While it currently begins to inflect positive in terms of profitability, it should be noted that the Growth markets have a massive TAM compared to their core market and could cause the company to 5x in the next few years if they maintain or gain market share and continue to grow in these massive TAMs.
Total TAM growth
As they grow, their competitive advantage deepens due to sticky customers and cheaper products from economies of scale. The US has an even faster scale of 49%+ growth y/y and HAYPP is outpacing the US nicotine pouch growth at 57% y/y. As the US begins to approve various products and variety begins to flood the US market, a ton of US users want to try various Nordic brands that don’t have access which lends a very strong lean towards an online website such as HAYPP. The US is a very ripe environment along with the UK and Germany (where nicotine can only be sold online) for HAYPP to continue to outperform massively.
Emerging Segment
Their “emerging” segment is where they have begun to introduce vapes into their value chain. HAYPP is beginning to sell vapes to UK and Germany, but it is at the very beginning stages and has no current significant impact on their bottom or top line. The company says the growth they are experiencing in this segment has been very similar to the growth that they experienced when they introduced Nicotine Pouches in growth markets. This is the most likely segment to get hit with regulatory concerns, so for now I won’t even consider this in a to be a profitable unit and will just assume it will be a small drain on EBITDA for the foreseeable future.
Balance Sheet
The balance sheet is great with no large debt burden and good working capital management. As they hit profitability this yeaearly next year I would expect a cash build up until the company decides if they will be returning cash to shareholders or reinvesting in the business.

Valuation
HAYPP is extremely undervalued based on where they are from a profitability standpoint and their current inflection point. Due to their high growth, it will be hard to pinpoint an exact value on them so this will merely be an exercise in estimating their value among a range more than usual (anyone who claims they can perfectly value a high growth company is probably overvaluing due to unsound conviction).
First let’s look at how they are currently valued, which is roughly 14x their core EBITDA. Now let’s take a second and think about how insane that statement was. Their core market is the Nordic countries which will be hitting growth again as their snus cannibalization slows, the Nordic countries basically have no further regulation risk for nicotine pouches, and it is a noncyclical industry. I would argue that 14x their core EBITDA is probably an appropriate valuation based on only their core segment.
What this means is (if you haven’t noticed already) that you are getting their “growth” segment for free based on the valuation of the stock. The growth segment alone is probably worth multiples of the current stock price due to the massive TAM and extreme growth prospects. If we assume the emerging segment is worthless (which it isn’t and it will be profitable at some point) then that means all of the upside in the stock can be based on what the value of the growth segment. Based on TAM, growth, and lack of cyclicality then this leaves the only risk as regulation.
There will most likely be some sort of regulation, but we are very far from that as the Tobacco industry has been very careful in how they implement their new nicotine pouch momentum in a more appropriate way compared to vapes. The most likely regulations will probably be flavor bans of some sort or retail bans (which further benefits HAYPP). Regulations will most likely be limited in scope due to just the sheer lack of mortality risk associated with pouches vs any other form of common nicotine intake.
Based on their probable conservative revenue growth (40% average for the next 3 years, and 15% after that), EBITDA growth, the fact that they will have both core and growth markets at high single digit EBITDA margins in 2025, and their lack of cyclicality, then I would estimate that their Growth markets are worth a very conservative $400m-$500m USD. I am likely undershooting the valuation because they are driving profitability very fast and their revenue is growing closer to 40%-60% in growth markets right now. If they are able to keep up current growth figures and expand to double digit margins before the end of the decade then they could be worth 2x-3x this value (which is why valuing growth companies are so hard, because I can’t foresee the future). Again, I valued the emerging segment as worthless which is unlikely as well.
So, based on the value of $450m USD for the growth markets and the current value of $240 USD for the Nordic markets, that would create a sum of the parts equal to roughly $700m or nearly triple the current share price. This valuation leaves a ton of room for margin expansion and higher growth prospects because let’s face it, the US alone is probably worth at least 3x-5x more than the Nordic countries not including the UK, Germany, or Swiss. This is a very conservative valuation for the company, but it shows how great the risk/reward is based on the current price. Using a conservative valuation here also helps accommodate for regulation risk.
In SEK terms this would be 250 SEK/share or 7.35B SEK.
Conclusion
Even accommodating for regulation risk, a valuation of $700m seems appropriate as a starting point for the valuation for HAYPP Group. I think there is a very high likelihood that I could be off on this by a large margin, but I feel like the downside is very protected with this valuation. Management has been great in execution and I expect that to continue. In a more bullish case where every segment of the company fires on all cylinders we could see a valuation of $1.5B+, but that is not a scenario that I would like to bet my investors’ money on. For now, I will stay invested and keep watching them execute and adjust my valuation accordingly.

“Deadcoast Book 1: Heat and the Grizzly Reds” transports readers to a 2063 Earth, a world on the brink, where the scarcity of fresh water has led to previously unseen geopolitical tensions. Amidst this backdrop, the nation-backed militant group DAGGR has emerged as a formidable force, leveraging advanced technology to assert control over Canada’s abundant water resources. At the heart of their arsenal is ‘slugTech,’ a technology pioneered by James Broadshaw, intended for ecological restoration but repurposed for militaristic dominance.
The story unfolds with the chilling invasion of Vancouver, marking a turning point as DAGGR makes its ambitions clear, culminating in the assassination of the Canadian Prime Minister. This act of aggression leaves the country reeling, exposing vulnerabilities and igniting a global reaction.
The UNE-EYE satellite is central to the international response, a significant narrative element representing the world’s most advanced orbital tracking system. Once decommissioned in favour of privacy, the Dutch reactivated the satellite as a strategic move to monitor DAGGR’s movements and coordinate a unified international effort against the aggressors. This revival of UNE-EYE symbolizes a crucial turning point, highlighting the global stakes and the interconnectedness of nations in the face of a common enemy.
As Canada grapples with its plight, the DAMU (Deserted American Military Units) rise in solidarity, breaching borders to fight alongside their Canadian counterparts. This act of defiance is mirrored by international forces, including the Netherlands and Ukraine, each bringing their unique strengths to the coalition, underscored by the strategic oversight provided by the UNE-EYE satellite.
Amidst the geopolitical chaos, a man who had all but given up, a boxer on the ropes, emerges from Vancouver’s Gastown. Known as HEAT, this leader of the Grizzly Reds becomes a symbol of resistance and hope. HEAT’s story, and that of the Grizzly Reds, is one of resilience, rallying not only Canadians but also global citizens to stand against DAGGR’s tyranny.
“Deadcoast Book 1: Heat and the Grizzly Reds” is a compelling narrative of survival, alliance, and resistance. It deftly weaves elements of advanced technology, international politics, and the indomitable human spirit. The inclusion of the UNE-EYE satellite serves as a testament to the complexities of modern warfare and the critical role of global surveillance and coordination in maintaining security and freedom. But something else stirs amongst it. The UNE still shrouds its use, albeit assuring it is for record-keeping purposes- there is no way to be sure. Join HEAT and the Grizzly Reds as they navigate the challenges of Time, War, Science and liberating their fellow man in Vancouver. THE GRIZZLIES NEED YOU, in this action-packed, emotional saga, speaks to the resilience and camaraderie inherent in the human condition.

THE YEAR IS 2063
In a future world plagued by scarcity and desperation, DAGGR, a shrouded nation-funded militant group, emerges as a significant player. They focus on Canada, a land rich in the most valuable resource left on Earth: fresh water. DAGGR, a state-of-the-art military faction, features boat hulls fitted with tech from forgotten scientists, silenced for their discoveries out of fear, not fortune. The DAGGR technology, originally known as ‘slugTech,’ was a technological marvel in 3 breakthroughs. 1. Quantum Computing, 2. Data Compression, 3. Power Generation. ‘slugTech,’ created by a young Canadian Scientist ‘James Broadshaw’ 30 years earlier, was a true innovation. James created the slugs to heal, to help. The slugs were a 360-degree plan to encapsulate the earth in self-repairing atmospheric “slug swarms.” A self-repairing Global Bandaid. The project’s potential caused widespread alarm among the Need-to-know world leaders. Just like that, the slugTech was delegated and prohibited at the highest level of classification: TWA Technology. A Total World Annihilation Classification.’ slugTech was shrouded in secrecy and hidden to avoid events like the ones to come. No trace of James Broadshaw has been seen or heard from 19 years ago. Today, DAGGR approaches with an abomination tainting James’ legacy.
DAGGR’s innovation extended beyond self-repairing hulls. It involved trillions of quantum scale molecules, a new man-made molecule reactive to electric currents, programable to scale, to human eyes — A manifestation of slimy consistent liquid. The Molecules, capable of constructing honeycombing at a microscopic level, chains of strength tested by time in Darwin's evolution. The honeycomb is fine-tuned to absorb, create, repair, and discard. It scatters in and out of vision like a hive, moving as if bleeding while discarding its damaged former molecular brethren. Adversaries dubbed them M’YASNI HOLOVY, aka MEAT HEADS. This was just a taste of what DAGGR had to offer, the tip of the military iceberg. This tech alone was thought of only in science and prototyping. But DAGGR’s mission was not solely about military prowess. It was about unlocking new Technological Marvels via destruction and power, paving the way for swift world domination.
And so…
The enigma persists: who was DAGGR, and how did they outpace the world’s best? This Faction, a force to be reckoned with, traces its strength back to ancient times when men spoke a forgotten tongue. The Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings, and the great philosophers of Greece. Structuring their Military ranks as the Roman Legion once did was a cusp to dawn the new Legionaries. The mystery of their origins and ability to surpass the world’s best is a puzzle that continues to intrigue and confound.
— -
Under the veil of fireworks on Canada Day, a sinister plot unfolds as the then-unknown (DAGGR) assailant assassinates the Canadian Prime Minister. Chaos ensues as the highest echelons of the government are either eliminated or driven into hiding, leaving a power vacuum in their wake.
The world is shocked by the unveiling of DAGGR and its sudden, unprovoked invasion of Vancouver.
“As the DAGGRS military might descend upon Vancouver, the world watches in stunned silence. It was Canada…Who dared with The United States so close? So intertwined?”
The countries almost became One after the American Water Crisis. The United States, with all its power and might, could not battle the grim reality of a dry well — that is until the Canadians intervened.
During the 2043 American water crisis (due to overpopulation), Most of the world clung to its Dwindling supplies. Canada and Russia were becoming vastly wealthy nations with vastly different ideals. Each harnesses 89% of the natural water left on Earth between them.
Canada, NOTWITHSTANDING, fiscally bankrupted its country, sending trillions in drinkable, H2O aid to the impossible, seemingly unquenchable thirst of the American Populace. The talks of liquid gold had come to pass. Most of Canada’s still bountiful glacial runoffs prove vital for its controlled population.
Canada, its citizens, and its shield were dedicated to ensuring the safety and survival of their American counterparts. The Canadian Nation essentially shut down for three months, pivoting all infrastructure to aid RED BLEED BLUE.
Operation “Red Bleed Blue”
Canada suspended its airspace for three months. It took control of all aircraft with two wings and an engine in its flying zones, including small planes in the east, seaplanes in the west, and Inuit icebreakers in the north. All international pilots were required to join the effort or relinquish their respective companies’ aircraft temporarily. Airspace clearance was strictly controlled from coast to coast. Natural spring pools near the Canadian borders were donated to help the United States immediately by providing a pumpable source close to the border. This was a Canadian-led coalition to support its loyal allies in the south; the world, inspired by the Northern Nation, came together to offer overwhelming manpower support. As a result of this effort, America’s recovery operation was streamlined, ensuring a full economic and strategic recovery. These events immeasurably further strengthened the bond between Canada and the United States. In exchange for steady water supplies, America would provide permanent military incorporation to Canada, making Canada’s young and too optimistically forward-thinking leaders believe there was no need for an underfunded, rudimentary Canadian military.
The Canadian Military was Designed to be an operational elite force of cutting-edge units. Some soared above in the skies with the eagles; some stared through scopes at their prey miles away, and some lived at the depths of the ocean’s crust, researching the next edge. It wasn’t a large force but a technologically forward one. The Canadian Military, all Research projects and its personnel are cut overnight.
Aside from these events and the Sacrifices of the North, it wasn't enough when Canada’s time of need came.
The US finds itself handcuffed by a technological marvel of DAGGR Faction ingenuity — the “C2c,” a super bomb designed not for destruction but to hinder AI in Machines. This leaves America’s Technological might and size paralyzed, unable to intervene without risking its national security. The closure of borders and refusal to accept Canadian refugees ignite riots within the U.S.; the Americans take to Social news outlets, and these phrases take hold;
“BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER.”WE REMEMBER:”
Freedom fighters awaken in their populace, not for themself, but for the Canadian Citizens so much like their own. They are the DAMU.
As the American people grapple with their government’s inaction. Militant groups, mostly “Deserted American Military Units” or “DAMU,” rip open their border gates.
The DAMU march to Seattle, where they are openly greeted, shown, and instructed on how to broadcast nationally by the Local News Agencies. It would seem the want, the need to help was not just limited to those that can fight. The DAMU, with the help of the Media, both left and right, was broadcasted, Unified, Nationally, Globally.
“*WE WILL COME TO THE AID OF THE NORTH. WE ARE THE DAMU. WE CALL ANY TRAINED MILITANT OF AMERICA. IT IS IN OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO DEFEND OUR FAMILY, OUR NEIGHBOURS, OUR FRIENDS WHO SACRIFICED FOR US IN THE NORTH. IF YOU ARE TRAINED, YOU ARE DAMU, AND THIS IS YOUR FIGHT. LEST WE FORGET THE THIRST OF THE CRISIS? OUR BLOOD IS TO THE TRUE NORTHERN SACRIFICES IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE MARCH FOR VANCOUVER AT DAWN. WE MARCH– WE FIGHT; IF YOU WISH TO JOIN US, ALL TRAVEL WILL BE COMPENSATED TO SEATTLE. DIAL ‘#FIGHT’ (‘#34448’)*”
DAMU CONVOY MARCH TO ZERO BEACH, VANCOUVER, BC.
They demanded their own smaller(than the now 400-strong DAMU) national guard units lower their weapons or fire on them(DAMU), but they sure as hell weren’t going to do anything while the Civilians in the North were openly Slaughtered. The UNE-EYE(A world Monitoring Mega Satellite Structure provided a Full Scope, degree stream of the invasion, live as it unfolded. The DAMU were fired up and ready for what may come after witnessing the atrocities on civilians in the violent invasion. The border forces subtly obliged; they didn’t want to be there either. A small sign of humanity, a small flame doused by the arrival of the entire American border forces not a day later. The DAMU militants crossed the border into the grey. If the government wasn’t going to, the American people were. Despite the political constraints, there’s an undercurrent of hope and solidarity among the American populace, a belief that their Canadian kin won’t be trounced so easily — they are Northmen: Strong, Weathered, Proud. The Canadians will buy themselves enough time to allow the American people to mobilize independently. Riot or Revolution- Canada will not be abandoned in their darkest hour.
— -
Amidst this international turmoil, a forgotten ally rekindles an old bond. The Netherlands, moved by the atrocities and recalling a debt from a world’s past, announces a Declaration of War that is both Swift and Symbolic. In a historic gesture, 10,000 dead tulips are sent to DAGGR’s “SUNKEN CITIES.” Not underwater, but an alias for their innovative creation of continental Landmasses in the Pacific Dark Zones. It is a grim reminder of the Dutch’s loyal tenacity, bond to lives lost, and vow to honour past sacrifices from Forgotten World Quarrels. The Dutch mobilize their military for an operation named “Vrijheid” — a phrase that means freedom, a principle they’re determined to uphold.
The Dutch Royal family, with ties to Canada dating back to World War II, leads the charge. Princess Margriet’s Direct Descendant, Halifax van Royal(“Royal,” a warrior title replacing his traditional royal Surname ‘Orange Nassau.’ The Highest Honor in the Dutch Military Elite), a symbol of the enduring bond between the two nations, reignites his family’s commitment; a vow from a different time, violence born of a different struggle, the Canadians once Liberated Dutch lands from tyrants, and he would vow to return that very same favour.
During their(Dutch Royalty) refugee status in World War II, Princess Margaret van Orange Nassau sought asylum in Canada’s parliament. Canada even temporarily granted parts of their “Dutch soil” land so Margaret’s children could be born officially on Dutch Lands. As a boy, Halifax’s family passed down stories of the Fateful days of the great struggle, generation to generation; the stories passed off tongues as the test of time-shifted legacies and gifted life. The gratitude survived the tests, the sands of time– about the days the Canadians arrived. The day they roared into Holland ferociously, battling the Occupying Nazis and expelling them from household to household, driving them from city to city, until the Netherlands was once again a free reign. Canadians sacrificed to save Holland’s people Halfway Across the World in a war that wasn’t theirs. Halifax was determined to honour this Sacrifice.
Halifax, infuriated by the atrocities streamed by the UNE-EYE(World Surveillance), personally promises his “Korps Commandotroepen (KCT)” to liberate one Canadian town for each of the 8,000 Canadian soldiers buried on Dutch soil, a tribute to the heroes who helped liberate Holland during the war. Before a full hour passed in the Canadian invasion.
Korps Commandotroepen — KCT(English: Commando Corps) is the elite special forces unit of the Royal Netherlands Army. The KCT traces its origins to the Second World War with the founding of №2 (Dutch) Troop.
The royal family pulled in generational favours to the powers of the U.N.E.(The United Nations of Europe.) to recommission its Mega Structure Satellite, the once intrusive World Eye. A Satellite can find almost anything, anywhere, at face-recognizing precision. A mother to a web of smaller surveillance satellites, it could track a fly in the desert. For the first time in 7 years, the UNE-EYE was back and operational, fully utilizing its global tracking and orbital streaming system.
The world’s state-of-the-art orbital tracking system. It was mainly decommissioned to search and rescue after the global privacy initiative before being wholly outlawed and shut down a few years later. The power of the Mob and privacy were prime.
Unbeknownst to Canadians, the world was watching their struggle, fight, and determination.
As the world watched on, it burst into flames. Inspired by everyday Canadians’ hearts in their battle against torrential odds, their hearts, minds and souls felt for them and prayed for them. Every denomination, religious alignment, and political authority seemed to unite under one banner; “how can we help the Canadians?” Politics ensued as the world's populace helplessly watched as Canada burned.
With Halifax leading the Efforts, The reality of warfare and logistics proved to be a daunting challenge. Despite the royal efforts, including setting up refugee centers in various locations and sending evacuation ships to Newfoundland, Halifax(the Canadian Province), and Montreal, the Dutch faced an uphill battle against time and dwindling resources.
Meanwhile, another unexpected ally emerges from the East. Ukraine, forged in the fires of conflict and struggle, remembers Canada’s aid during its decade-long fight for independence.
Canada was there, officially or unofficially, for all ten years. The arrival of the Ukrainian flagship, ZELENSKY II, bearing the flag “UTF-FLR.’’ followed by a new garrison name, “UKRAINIAN TASKFORCE — FOREIGN LEGIONS REVENGE,” an homage to the INTERNATIONAL CANADIAN LEGION forces that fought for Ukraine and the brave Canadian JTF-2 “12 of Hope” a unit shrouded in secrecy and anonymity until then. Their actions shattered their veiled secrecy. It’s hard to stay hidden when you disobey direct orders to liberate half a Ukranian city. Saving hundreds of thousands of civilians, throwing their lives on the line in the process, losing six members, and igniting the Ukrainian Civilians they were trying to rescue. Elite soldiers and Ukrainian civilians alike, side by side, fighting for survival. With its golden yellow hull and blue stripes, the Zelenskyy ii signals a new chapter in this unfolding saga. The UKRAINIAN TASKFORCE — FOREIGN LEGIONS REVENGE.
Hope.
However, tragedy strikes as the Zelensky II falls victim to DAGGR’S C2c weapon. Rendered immobile, a sitting duck in open harbours. A low rumble flies ahead, eight engines grown on a mammoth aircraft dawning the letters ‘SPIT FLARE.’ As their bomber flies overhead, Canadians watch in horror from the beach; a small black dot falls slowly from the craft above, and with a flash of white, the Zelenskyy II vaporizes.
The “Small Bang” bomb, as DAGGR calls it, is the rapid spinning of plasma in a small diameter, increasing and accelerating its speed until the molecules in the plasma begin to flare outwards in a disc formation, stretching their fabric in the very space-time itself, expanding, thinning and super-heating the plasma to sub-molecular level, then rapidly infusing the process with oxygen and at the same speed decelerating it completely. The molecules super-compress, contract, and expand explosively. It would almost seem modelled as the same process of creating the universe. In its current state, it reaches temperatures close to the sun. The bomb resulted in the loss of 180,000 lives and shattered the morale of those waiting for evacuation on the Atlantic Shore.
The NORTHERN DAGGR forces, failing to enter through the Arctic, encounter resistance from the “Canadian Shield,” the formidable natural defences of the North. DAGGR is stopped in their tracks. With the invading forces, there is a new All-in focus on Vancouver for its strategic ports and supply lines. However, the Atlantic side of Canada succumbs to fear tactics, with the evacuation efforts ceasing after the destruction of the Zelensky II.
Amidst the challenging times, a hero unexpectedly rises from the ashes of Gastown in Vancouver. Known by the code name HEAT, Ryan emerges as a symbol of hope and resistance.
HEAT becomes the founder and leader of the Grizzly Reds, a resistance group that plays a pivotal role in igniting the spirit of defiance across Canada. Their true origin is rooted in the Red Brick Road incident, a gruesome act of violence by the DAGGR FACTION to enact fear in the uprising. This heinous act catalyzes HEAT and gives a new birth to the Grizzly Reds, a symbol of Canadian tenacity and the fight for freedom.
The Grizzlies are known for their guerrilla “Roar and Move” Tactic, which strategically surrounds their militia unit around a target. The streets are that of the grizzlies; it's their hunting grounds, homes, and native streets they know best: Zero Beach, Gastown, Vancouver, Canada. The Grizzlies exchange Roars one by one around their target as if banshees transcending physical barriers— haunting, taunting their prey. Their unbreakable spirit inspires a global movement to rise up.
Across the border, Americans, forming the DAMU(DESERTED AMERICAN MILITARY UNIT), flock to the Seattle coast and organize the march to Zero Beach. True to their word, the Dutch include the ‘Vrijheid’ Garrison, comprising military personnel who volunteer to fight for Canada’s liberation, commanded by the elite Korps Commandotroepen (KCT).
The story of HEAT and the Grizzly Reds is a powerful reminder of humanity’s unyielding resilience in the face of adversity. It speaks to the deep-seated desire for justice and compassion that runs through our veins and the unwavering commitment to our fellow human beings.

2024.05.10 02:13 listen2dotai Sebastian Stan and Lily James Join Forces Again in New Horror Thriller

In the anticipated reunion of Sebastian Stan and Lily James, the world of cinema braces itself for a new spine-chilling adventure with the upcoming film "Let the Evil Go West". Directed by the notable Christian Tafdrup, known for his work on "Speak No Evil," this psychological horror thriller weaves a tale that promises to unsettle and captivate its audience.
The plot centers around a railroad worker who, under eerily disturbing circumstances, discovers a substantial amount of money. This precipitates a series of horrifying visions and manifestations that push him towards the brink of insanity. Parallel to his deteriorating condition, his wife grows increasingly convinced that a malevolent presence has latched onto their family, bringing about a chilling narrative of psychological unraveling and supernatural suspense.
Sebastian Stan, fresh from his acclaimed portrayal of Tommy Lee in "Pam & Tommy," and Lily James, following her role in "The Iron Claw," are not just lead actors in this venture but also serve as executive producers. Their previous chemistry on screen has set a high bar for their performances in this ambitious project.
Involvement in "Let the Evil Go West" extends to powerhouse production teams, with names like Tim and Trevor White under Star Thrower Entertainment and Gramercy Park Media's Mark Fasano and Nathan Klingher playing pivotal roles in bringing this disturbing narrative to life. The screenplay, crafted by Xc Vs, is expected to complement Tafdrup's intense directorial style, making for a film that's likely to linger in audiences' minds well after the credits roll.
The financing and distribution landscape looks robust with entities like CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group overseeing domestic sales, and north.five.six handling international rights, introducing the film to potential buyers at the prestigious Cannes film market.
Looking ahead, the expectation is that "Let the Evil Go West" will not only appeal to fans of psychological thrillers but also draw in a broader audience owing to the star power of Stan and James and the intriguing premise of the film. It’s intended to explore not just supernatural elements but deep psychological fears, tapping into a universal vein of terror that resonates with diverse audiences.
Furthermore, the film's production model, combining experienced and innovative producers, along with a script that promises complexity and depth, suggests that "Let the Evil Go West" could set new benchmarks for horror thrillers, projecting significant impacts on genre standards and audience expectations in the years to come.

2024.05.10 01:52 Sea-Independence-323 Mortal Kombat: Resurrection, If Mortal Kombat wasn't rebooted

We all know and love Mortal Kombat (2011), or more commonly known as MK9. The reboot brought new life to Mortal Kombat, saved it from being a dead franchise, and aided in the resurgence of fighting games in the mainstream gaming community. MK9 brought back nearly every character from the original Mortal Kombat arcade trilogy, however, there were plans to reboot the entire roster. I can't remember where exactly I read about this, but after Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, one of the plans for the next Mortal Kombat game was to pull a Street Fighter 3 and replace the whole roster with new characters except for Scorpion and Sub-Zero. So, I'm going to be doing that. I will recreate the Mortal Kombat roster using entirely new characters. Presenting: Mortal Kombat: Resurrection.
I didn't come up with an in-depth story. Right now, my story is that everyone who fought at the pyramid died except for Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Now, there are a lot of vacancies in the different factions and organizations in the Mortal Kombat world. The realms are on the brink of chaos. Then, a new, self-proclaimed Kahn declares a Mortal Kombat tournament, with the prize of granting the kombatants whatever they want. Like I said, I didn't put much effort, but that's not the point. However, I will be including little stories and descriptions for each character so you all can know their purpose. Most characters will be listed as archetypes. Their potential names will be in parenthesis.
Also, since this what-if happens right after Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, this takes place in the “original” timeline of MK. So there is no alternate timeline or time travel in this game.
  1. Scorpion - Yeah, Scorpion isn't going anywhere. During the Battle of Armageddon, Scorpion and Sub-Zero were fighting to a stand still when they realized everyone was dead. Realizing they were the sole survivors, they decided to go their separate ways. Scorpion is rebuilding the Shirai Ryu, but he joins the tournament to see about this new Kahn
  2. Sub-Zero - Sub-Zero's story is pretty much the same as Scorpion, except he is rebuilding the Lin Kuei. Scorpion and Sub-Zero are not as antagonistic towards each other as they were before, but they are definitely not friends either
  3. Pink Ninja (Toxin/Floyd) - Ed Boon said that if he were to create another ninja, it would be a pink one. Here's the pink one. He has an Earthrealm parent and an Outworld parent. He gets his powers from his Outworld heritage. Learning about this, he travels to Outworld, and he is now an assassin and bodyguard to the new Kahn. I have 2 ideas of how the pink ninja can play out. One is he uses poison to attack, giving him the name Toxin. Another is he uses light to attack and his name is Floyd. I know people use this name for the potential pink ninja based on the band Pink Floyd. The light is a reference to the cover album of The Dark Side of the Moon. Y'all can choose which one is better
  4. Protagonist - I don't have much going for him, but he is an Earthrealmer who is basically a fish-out-of-water. He is chosen by the Earthrealm gods to fight for Earthrealm. Not quite sure how he will play, but looks wise, I would model him after Brandon Lee, the son of Bruce Lee who is Liu Kang's inspiration. However, I do want to experiment with him being the only character who does not kill during his fatalities. That was initially the plan with Liu Kang during the arcade games, but that plan fell through. But I would try that again with the protagonist. It will emphasize him being unfamiliar with the Mortal Kombat world.
  5. Outworld Rebel (Mokuran/Honoki/Hu Lan) - The deuteragonist of the "story". Tired of the constant tyranny of the Outworld Empire, she runs her own rebel group and allies herself with the protagonist and Earthrealm to fight the empire and establish a new fair government in Outworld. Her namesake is derived from the Japanese and alternative pronunciations of 木蘭, or Mulan. Mulan is a woman who disguised herself as a man and fought in the Chinese military. However, the rebel is all woman and she is fighting against the government. I picture her fighting with kusarigama and wearing a mask, giving her an aura of a ninja. But not a ninja you see if anime and other popular media, but the historical, "traditional" ninja that uses guerilla warfare, espionage, and "dishonorable" kombat
  6. Shaolin Monk (Gang Wu) - Gang Wu was a Shaolin Monk who looked up to Liu Kang and Kung Lao. He was enraged upon learning about their deaths, however, the monks decided not to take action. Enraged with their passiveness, Gang Wu defected himself from the Shaolin Monks and goes on his personal journey to join the tournament and to avenge his fallen Shaolin brothers. He has a more aggressive approach in fighting in comparison to Liu Kang and Kung Lao, but he still uses chi moves in his attacks
  7. Jack Burton (Kurt Carpenter) - During the creation of the first MK game, Big Trouble in Little China served as a big inspiration for the game and many of the characters like Raiden and Shang Tsung. I decided to make a character based on the main character Jack Burton. I named him Kurt Carpenter after Kurt Russell, who played Jack, and John Carpenter, the director of the movie. My short story is that he is a truck driver who got attacked by Outworld monsters. He was able to kill them with a metal baseball bat and some guns he had on him. This is how he fights in-game too. He enters the tournament to know "what on God's green Earth is going on?"
  8. Special Forces (Karlos Garcia) - Second Lieutenant Karlos Garcia, now head of the Outer World Investigation Agency (OIA) is leading an army into Outworld to investigate this new Kahn and his empire. Garcia is also entering the tournament to do some investigating himself. He fights using a power suit, similar to Iron or Lex Luthor, which were made from remains of Sektor's Tekunin and Cyber Lin Kuei
  9. Suiten - The water god of Earth. Since her fellow gods Raiden and Fujin are dead, and they won't be reanimated for a long time, she now must protect Earthrealm from any foreign threats. She, along with Kaijin, recruits Earthrealm warriors (Protagonist, Rebel, Shaolin Monk, Jack Burton, Special Forces) to fight on Earthrealm's behalf. She joins the tournament to investigate this new Kahn and ensure Earthrealm’s safety. She is more drawn to the protagonist. Being a water god, she uses water in her attacks
  10. Kaijin - The fire god of Earth. Since his fellow gods Raiden and Fujin are dead, and they won't be reanimated for a long time, he now must protect Earthrealm from any foreign threats. He along with Suiten recruits Earthrealm warriors (Protagonist, Rebel, Shaolin Monk, Jack Burton, Special Forces) to fight on Earthrealm's behalf. He joins the tournament to investigate this new Kahn and ensure Earthrealm’s safety. He is more drawn to the Outworld Rebel. Being a fire god, he uses fire in his attacks
  11. Sorceress - During the 17th century, there was a sorceress who tampered with dark magic. Unknowingly, she has been drawing power from the Netherrealm. One day, she unknowingly let in a horde of demons into her village, which resulted in the death of many. For her punishment, the gods of Earthrealm banished her to Outworld and changed her skin green (taking visual inspiration from the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz). However, in Outworld, her powers only grew to where she was able to extend her life, become a master of the dark magicks, and can make direct connections with the Netherrealm. She allies herself with the new king of the Netherrealm to control Outworld and all of the other realms, as well as get revenge on the Earth gods that banished and cursed her. She fights using magic spells, potions, and metallic witch fingers
  12. Demon (Volo) - Volo isn't like the other demons of the Netherrealm. While he still uses his demonic powers and hellfire, his cunning and intelligence is what made him ruler of the Netherrealm after the deaths of Quan Chi and Shinnok. However, he does hide a demonic side that is just as ruthless as the other demons and imps of the Netherrealm. But he tries to keep that at bay. Nevertheless, teaming up with the sorceress, his goal is rule all of the realms in the name of the Netherrealm. Visually, the only demonic features are his red skin, small horns, and a devil-Nightcrawler tail. He is very human in his appearance and a good-looking demon. However, he can transform into a more demonic version of himself with larger horns, fangs, a snout, and wings
  13. Chaosrealmer (A’ Narki) - A denizen of Chaosrealm. His story is simple: the realms are in chaos with so many leaders and important figures dead, and A' Narki wants to keep it that way. He enters the tournament to kill the new emperor so chaos can reign in all of the realms. He is rivals with Chumon, the Seidan guard
  14. Orderrealmer (Chumon) - Due to the death of Hotaru, Chumon became head of the Seidan guard. But the objective is still the same: maintain order at any cost. Chumon enter the tournament to ensure order is established across the realms, even if the Guard must force order. He is rivals with A' Narki, a chaosrealmer. Visually, he is modeled after a traditional samurai, complete with fighting with a katana. Even though Kenshi and Hotaru kind of did this aesthetic, Kenshi is more akin to a ronin, a rogue or independent samurai, while Hotaru frankly didn't pull it off well
  15. Amazon (Alkaia/Andromeda/Otrera) - The Amazons were once respected and feared warriors in Ancient Greece. However, as time progressed, man started to gain more power martially and politically. The Amazons soon migrated to Edenia where they served in the Edenian army. However, they were always overshadowed by the Edenians, despite their contribution to the army. Now that there are vacancies in the Edenian government, Alkaia (or whatever her name is gonna be) seeks a hostile takeover of Edenia, revenge on Earthrealm for being displaced, and to rule all realms under Amazonian rule. The Amazon fighter will use plenty of traditional Greek weapons during kombat including a bow and arrow, half shield, and a sword
  16. Tasia - Some of you MK fans may recognize this game. She was a boss from the not good Mortal Kombat: Special Forces game. She fought with twin katanas, she can teleport, and she has energy projection. In this game, with Kano, Kabal, and the other Black Dragon members dead, she becomes head of the Black Dragon. The Black Dragon becomes more structured and cutthroat under her rule. It changed from a band of thugs, to an organized, but still ruthless crime organization. The Black Dragon is capitalizing on the chaos of the realms by selling weapons, mercenaries, and information. Tasia enters the tournament to change the Black Dragon from the Kings of the Underworld to the Kings of Realms
  17. Vampire (Brahmir) - Y'all know Nitara? The vampire lady from MK: Deadly Alliance and MK1? Well her species were from a realm named Vaternus, but they lost to Outworld in a MK tournament a long time ago. Now, their realm is merged. However, another vampire named Brahmir joins the tournament to free his realm from Outworld so that the Vampires can return home. Their own home. Visually, we'll be taking some cues from the unused vampire character from MK: Deadly Alliance. Here is the link to the unused vampire: https://mortalkombat.fandom.com/wiki/Kahil_Grigesh
  18. Female Ninja (Leal/Imani) - An Edenian warrior that trained under Jade. She has served the Edenian court dutifully, but with the deaths of Queen Sindel, Princess Kitana, and General Jade, the court is in disarray. The Amazons that inhabit Edenia are also growing restless and placing their eyes on the throne. However, the Edenian soldier along with her comrades has been keeping peace. The warrior joins the tournament to make sure there isn't a hostile takeover of the throne by Outworlders or this new emperor, to see if she can receive any aid or power in keeping the peace in Edenia, and to fight the Amazon and stop her usurpation of the Edenian government. The female ninja is an orange ninja and she fights with a spear and throwing knives. I modeled her after the Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military order of the Kingdom of Dahomey, a West African Kingdom. Visually, she is African in appearance, not ambiguously dark-skinned like Jade or Tanya, long hair in braids, and has African inspired clothing while still containing Edenian design elements that were used on Kitana, Jade, etc.
  19. Viking (Erik) - Everyone knows about the Shokan, the Tarkatans, the Centaurs. But there is another race of Outworlders that has been hidden from the general populace, but are reemerging. The Veikins. Many centuries, maybe even millennia ago, this Viking-like race used to be among the other races of Outworld. However, they were brutish, ill-tempered, and savage, even by Outworld standards. Shao Kahn banished them to the frozen seas of Outworld, but instead of perishing, they thrived. They ruled the frozen wastelands of Outworlds and established a community. They even made contact with Earthrealm and inspired what would be Vikings. Now, with a political shift happening in Outworld, the Veikins are coming out of hiding to establish themselves amongst the Outworld people. Their chief, Erik, is joining the tournament to usher in a new era for the Veikins. Visually, Erik looks like a typical Viking with Viking armor, unkempt hair, and a beard. However, his face resembles that of a dwarf. He is not as small as one though. He main weapon is a battle ax
  20. Gladiator - The gladiator is the new Kahn’s champion and loyal subject. He has fought in numerous gladiator games and emerged champion. He even enjoyed a brief stint in being a soldier of Outworld’s armies. Now, serving as an enforcer and general for the new Kahn, he fights in the tournament to establish the new Outworld rule. Visually, he takes cues from traditional Roman gladiators and Reiko, more specifically his MK: Armageddon look
  21. Plant Based Character (Flora) - A denizen of the Outworld jungles, Flora has control of plant life and is a protector of the numerous jungles and forests in Outworld. She has killed numerous people who dared to threaten the Outworld plant life and nature. Her power over plants is so great, some think she is a God or demi-God of plants. She has been solitary for most of her life tending to the jungles. She never approved of any of the Kahns due to their neglect of Outworld’s nature nor did she particularly have any interest in other realms or the Mortal Kombat tournament. However, with this new Kahn and new tournament, Flora joins to ensure that the Kahn knows his place and to let him know that nature is the true emperor of Outworld. So she’s basically the Poison Ivy of the MK universe. I know people wanted a plant based character for MK, and I’ve seen them make that character a ninja. However, I believe making her a ninja is too limiting. Have her be her own person allows for more creative freedom for her design and story
  22. Ogre/Yokai - The sub boss of this hypothetical game. He is as big as Goro and looks similar to an ogre, yokai, or oni. The latter two being Japanese mythological monsters. He is the main enforcer of the boss. He is physically imposing and fights using a club
  23. Boss - The new big bad of the game. Funny enough, he is the character I have almost no story for him yet. And I don’t know how he will play. I do, however, have him modeled after Genghis Khan. But story-wise, he is a self-declared Kahn that has already formed his own court and is more cunning in his methods as compared to Shao Kahn. Instead of outright invasion and intimidation, he measles his ways into other realms affairs through different means. However, he is not above using underhanded tactics or brute force

2024.05.10 00:14 --2021-- pihole/diy router, hardware questions

Ok, I'm trying to make this short and easy to read, but not sure if I will accomplish that because there's too many things for me to figure out, and I'm just trying to I guess build a device to act as a firewall.
At one point I had an idea that I was going to build my own router (probably because I saw someone do it on youtube) and learn about firewalls, and vlans etc. I had this grandiose idea that I was going to turn my home into a smart home, build a media server, etc etc.
Realistically I do not have any of that. I have a roku stick, and I figure I could learn from using that. It's probably better to start simple and small. Now I think I'm probably going to just try to run pihole to block ads on a roku stick to start and isolate whatever data collecting it does, that's another thing I'm interested in learning more about, but it will at least get me some practice learning first.
Not sure on what os. I've used linux mint some, wasn't sure if debian would be over my head, or if I should try linux mint debian so I'd at least be somewhat familiar. I'm kinda curious about how LM debian is vs LM ubuntu and I guess I can test it out since this is just a learning environment at this point. And I've not used docker before and am curious about it, so I may try installing linux mint debian w/docker, then run pihole in a container.
Wound up getting a wyse 5060 off ebay. I didn't realize it had an SFP port, so I am going to hook it up to ethernet via usb adapter. And on top of it the SATA flash was dead and it would only boot into the bios, but I got sidetracked and the return window closed before I realized that. So I ordered a budget ssd and I'm going to take the pcb out and hope it fits where the sata flash goes. I guess I'll put electrical tape between it and the empty screw slot, since someone suggested that. And hopefully it will stay in place well. I also realized it only has 4gb ram and I don't think that's going to be enough to run pihole in a vm, at least from what I've read. So I'm going to have to buy more ram.
Since I ordered it before I realized I was going to go with just using it for pihole, I didn't expect to need wifi. I think it needs an M2 2230 wifi card, not sure. I don't know if the wifi will act as a hotspot. Not sure if this is going to be the best device at this point.
So right now I'm looking to set up a mini device that can act as a firewall, but can probably run a vm, has a regular ethernet connection to the router, wifi hotspot for devices to connect. I'm not sure if I'm headed in the right direction with this.
Later I would like if it can be upgraded with a second nic that I can plug other devices (or I guess a switch) into so they can access the internet through it. Hopefully at some point I can replace the ISP router with this, but that won't be for a while. I just want to learn on it first and keep it behind the router for the time being.
I don't know if the wyze 5060 I have will work for this, if I should get something else, like a wyze 5070 extended that can take a multi port nic (not sure if it can do wifi hotspot), or go with an optiplex. I kind of want something that the parts can be reused.
There seem to be a lot of different models of optiplex and I don't know much about them at this point. Not to mention that for some of them you need to buy a cpu... and I don't know much about cpus, so that will take extra time to figure out. And because I know that will take me a long time to sort that out, I keep debating if I should try to make the 5060 work.
Normally I do more research up front, but I tend to get caught in analysis paralysis and freeze up, so I gave myself a deadline that I had to order something off ebay. I just decided I had seen people talk about the wyze the most, but wasn't sure what model, and just looked for what looked like the best option on ebay, one that came with a power adapter. I've had bad experiences with having to replace laptop power cords and having them blow up the machine, so I figured best to make sure it had the original cord.

2024.05.09 08:23 MirkWorks Adventures in the Orgasmatron: How the Sexual Revolution Came to America by Christopher Turner (Intro)

Introduction
In 1909, Sigmund Freud was invited to give a series of lectures at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. On the way there from Vienna his cabin steward was reading The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, an event Freud claimed was the first indication he ever had that he was going to be famous. In the United States, the philosopher and psychologist William James and many other leading American intellectuals turned out to hear Freud talk, giving psychoanalysis official recognition, as Freud saw it, for the first time. He later wrote about what the Clark lectures meant to him: “In Europe I felt as though I was despised; but over there I found myself received by the foremost men as an equal. As I stepped onto the platform at Worcester to deliver my Five Lectures upon Psychoanalysis it seemed like the realization of some incredible daydream: psychoanalysis was no longer a production of delusion, it had become a valuable part of reality.”
Little did Freud know how his intellectual discoveries would transform America, which he dismissed as an “anti-paradise” or a “gigantic mistake.” Though he feared that Americans would enthusiastically “embrace and ruin psychoanalysis” by popularizing it and watering it down, he already suspected that his theories would in some way shake the country to the core. While watching the waving crowds from the deck of his ship as it docked in New York, turned to his fellow analyst Carl Gustav Jung and said, “Don’t they know we’re bringing them the plague?”
Well before the hedonism of the 1920s, a Freud-inspired revolution in sexual morals had begun. Greenwich Village bohemians, such as the writers Max Eastman and Floyd Dell, the anarchist Emma Goldman, who had been “deeply impressed by the lucidity” of Freud’s 1909 lectures, and Mabel Dodge, who ran an avant-garde salon in her apartment on Fifth Avenue, adapted psychoanalysis to create their own free-love philosophy. In the radical journal The Masses, Floyd Dell warned that “sexual emotions would not be repressed without morbid consequences.” Eastman, one of America’s first analysands, wrote a book comparing Freud and Marx: “Weren’t all forms of repression evil?” he asked rhetorically. Dell’s left-leaning analyst, a Shakespeare scholar called Dr. Samuel A. Tannenbaum who treated many of Greenwich Village artists, argued that it was healthier for young men to frequent prostitutes than to practice abstinence or masturbation.
Together they fashioned a cult of the orgasm - Mabel Dodge even went so far as to call her dog Climax. However, as Dell later admitted, their experiment was an isolated one, like that of the Oneida Community in the nineteenth century and a handful of other “obscure but pervasive sexual cults.” It was only after the Second World War that the idea of sexual liberation would permeate the culture at large.
When Wilhelm Reich, the most brilliant of the second generation of psychoanalysts who had been Freud’s pupils, arrived in New York in late August 1939, exactly thirty years after his mentor and only a few days before the outbreak of war, he was optimistic that his ideas about fusing sex and politics would be better received there than they had been in fascist Europe. Despite its veneer of Puritanism, America was a country already much preoccupied with sex - as Alfred Kinsey’s renowned investigations, which he began that same year, were to show. Reich could be said to have instigated “the sexual revolution”; a Marxist analyst, he coined the phrase in the 1930s in order to illustrate his belief that a true political revolution would only be possible once sexual repression was overthrown, the one obstacle Reich felt had scuppered the efforts of the Bolsheviks. “A sexual revolution is already in progress,” he declared, “and no power on earth will stop it.”
Reich was a sexual evangelist who held that the satisfactory orgasm made the difference between sickness and health. “There is only one thing wrong with neurotic patients,” he concluded in The Function of the Orgasm (1927): “the lack of full and repeated sexual satisfaction” (the italics are his). The orgasm was the panacea to cure all ills, he thought, including the fascism that had forced him to leave Europe. Reich sought to reconcile psychoanalysis and Marxism, thereby giving Freudianism an optimistic gloss, arguing that repression, which Freud came to believe was an inherent part of the human condition, could be shed. This would lead to what his critics dismissed as a “genital utopia” (they mocked him as “the prophet of bigger and better orgasms”). His ideas became influential in Europe, which Henry Miller, finding a new sense of purpose through sex, characterized as “the Land of Fuck.” Reich was a figurehead of the vocal sex reform movement in Vienna and Berlin before the Anschluss, after which the Nazis, who deemed it part of a Jewish conspiracy to undermine the continent, crushed it. His books were burned in Germany along with those of the German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld and Freud.
Soon after he arrived in the United States, Reich invented the orgone energy accumulator, a wooden cupboard about the size of a telephone booth, lined with metal and insulated with steel wool - a box in which, it might be said, his ideas came almost prepackaged. Reich considered his orgone energy accumulator an almost magical device that could improve its users’ “orgastic potency” and by extension their general, and above all mental, health. He claimed that it could charge up the body with the life force that circulated in the atmosphere (a force which he christened “orgone energy”) - mysterious currents that in concentrated form could not only help dissolve repressions but also treat cancer, radiation sickness, and a host of minor ailments. As he saw it, the box’s organic material absorbed orgone energy, and the metal lining stopped it from escaping, so the box acted as a greenhouse; and, supposedly, there was a noticeable rise in temperature in the box.
Reich persuaded Albert Einstein to investigate the machine, whose workings seemed to contradict all known principles of physics, but after two weeks of tests Einstein refuted Reich’s claims. Nevertheless, the orgone box became fashionable in America in the 1940s and 1950s, when Reich rose to fame as the leader of the new sexual movement that seemed to be sweeping the country. Orgone boxes were used by such countercultural figures as Norman Mailer, J. D. Salinger, Paul Goodman, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and William Burroughs - who claimed to have had a spontaneous orgasm in his. At the height of his James Bond fame, Sean Connery swore by the device, and Woody Allen parodied it in the movie Sleeper, giving it the immortal nickname “Orgasmatron.” Bohemians celebrated the orgone box as a liberation machine, the wardrobe that would lead to utopia, while to conservatives it was Pandora’s Box, out of which escaped the Freudian plague - the corrupting influence of anarchism and promiscuous sex.
Because of his radical past, Reich was placed under surveillance almost as soon as he arrived in the United States (his FBI file is 789 pages long). In 1947, after Harper’s Magazine introduced Reich to Americans as the leader of “a new cult of sex and anarchy,” the Food and Drug Administration began investigating him for making fraudulent claims about the orgone accumulator, and in 1954 a court ruled that he must stop leasing and selling his machine. When he broke the injunction he was sentenced to two years in prison. The remaining accumulators, along with thousands of copies of the journals and eleven books Rich self-published in America (including copies of The Sexual Revolution), which were thought to constitute “false advertising” for them, were incinerated.
In the ideological confusion of the postwar period, when the world was trying to get its head around what came to be called the Holocaust and intellectuals disillusioned with communism were abandoning the security of their earlier political positions, Reich’s ideas landed on fertile ground. With his tantalizing suggestion that sexual emancipation would lead to positive social change, Reich seemed to capture the mood of this convulsive moment. People sat in the orgone box hoping to dissolve the toxic dangers of conformity, which, as Reich had eloquently suggested as early as 1933, bred fascism. The literary critic Alfred Kazin wrote in his journal, “Everybody of my generation had his orgone box…his search for fulfillment. There was, God knows, no break with convention, there was just a freeing of oneself from all those parental attachments and thou shalt nots.”
In his essay “The New Lost Generation,” James Baldwin described how that generation crystallized around Reich’s thinking in the later 1940s and early 1950s:
It was a time of the most terrifying personal anarchy. If one gave a party, it was virtually certain that someone, quite possibly oneself, would have a crying jag or have to be restrained from murder or suicide. It was a time of experimentation, with sex, with marijuana, with minor infringements of the law. It seems to me that life was beginning to tell us who we were, and what life was - news no one has ever wanted to hear: and we fought back by clinging to our vision of ourselves as innocent, of love perhaps imperfect but reciprocal and enduring. And we did not know that the price of this was experience. We had been raised to believe in formulas.
In retrospect, the discovery of the orgasm - or, rather, of the orgone box - seems the least mad of the formulas that came to hand. It seemed to me….that people turned from the idea of the world being made better through politics to the idea of the world being made better through psychic and sexual health like sinners coming down the aisle at a revival meeting. And I doubted that their conversion was any more to be trusted than that. The converts, indeed, moved in a certain euphoric aura of well-being. Which would not last…There are no formulas for the improvement of the private, or any other, life - certainly not the formula of more and better orgasms. (Who decides?) The people I had been raised among had orgasms all the time, and still chopped each other with razors on Saturday nights.
“There was, God knows, no break with convention”; “the least mad of the formulas that came to hand” - both Kazin and Baldwin saw their bewildered peers breaking out of one ideological prison only to find themselves in another. Theirs was a generation teetering on a new kind of brink - full of optimism about the possibility of change, they were unsuspecting accomplices in the authorship of more insidious forms of control.
I first learned about Reich’s orgone energy accumulator in 1993 when I visited Summerhill, the “free” school in Suffolk, England, founded in 1921 by A. S. Neill. I was an anthropology student at Cambridge University and, when I asked whether I could stay for a while as a participant-observer, I was offered a large tepee as a place to sleep. I like the idea of living in it: a wigwam seemed a suitable home for a backyard anthropologist. However, everything at Summerhill - where lessons are voluntary and the pupils invent their own laws - is put to a vote, and the children decided they wanted to keep the tepee for themselves. So for that summer I lived in a bed-and-breakfast in Leiston. All the other guests worked for the nuclear power station Sizewell B: every piece of crockery and all the towels and cutlery were stamped with the nuclear power station’s logo. The owner of the B&B had been given a free pullover after a random Geiger counter inspection had determined that his own, hung out on the clothesline, harbored dangerously elevated levels of radiation.
A.S. Neill met Reich in Oslo in 1936 and soon afterward became his analysand, fitting in a dozen sessions with him one a return trip. Reich had by that time been expelled from the International Psychoanalytic Association (he had once been considered Freud’s heir apparent, but his attempts to reconcile psychoanalysis and Marxism ended up alienating practitioners of both), and pioneered a new form of analysis called “vegetotherapy,” a repudiation of the talking cure. Reich’s third wife, Ilse, described it as “doing away with the psychoanalytic taboo of never touching a patient,” and replacing it with “a physical attack by the therapist.” Reich would relax the patient’s taut muscles with deep breathing exercises and painful massage, until he or she broke down in involuntary convulsions, which Reich called the “orgasm reflex.”
Though his school had already been running for fifteen years, Neill found in Reich’s work its ideological justification, and he once referred to himself as Reich’s “John the Baptist.” His many books are littered with references to Reich’s concepts of “character-armor” and “self-regulation.” For his part Reich saw Neill’s project as a practical test of his ideas, and he sent his own son, Peter, to Summerhill for a while. He once threatened to give up his research and come and teach at the school, but Neill laughed and declined his offer, saying that Reich would frighten the children. Neill did, however, ask him to be the legal guardian of his daughter, Zoe. Reich invited Neill to start an orgonomic infant research center at his research institute in Maine and encouraged him to replace his Summerhill staff with people schooled in Reichian practice. Neill rejected both suggestions, but continued to read aloud from Reich’s books at staff meetings.
Reich and Neill shared a belief in the redemptive power of unconstricted development in children. For Reich this had an urgent political significance: he thought that only when children were raised free would it be possible to lay the foundations of a utopia. Neill thought that a radical reform of the education system was an essential preliminary to the creation of a better world. Both men believed that children were inherently good: it was an authoritarian, sexually repressive upbringing that corrupted them. Summerhill was designed to offer children a sanctuary from the moral contamination of the world, where they could live out their desires without the fear of punishment and play without the pressure of indoctrination: “We set out to make a school in which we would allow children freedom to be themselves,” Neill wrote. “In order to do this we had to renounce all discipline, all direction, all suggestion, all moral training, all religious instruction.” The school’s motto continues to be “Giving children back their childhood.”
By the summer of 1944, Neill had begun to practice Reich’s analytic technique on his pupils at Summerhill. “I have given up teaching and am doing only veg.-ther. analysis,” he wrote to Reich. “The more I see the results with adolescents the more I consider that bloody man Reich a great man…Marvelous how patients weep so easily when lying on their backs. Some do so in the first hour. Why?” One former student remembers being instructed to lie down and “breathe deeply, as though you’re having sexual intercourse,” while Neill prodded her stomach (she was too young to know what sex was, so she just panted). “The repressed ones have stomachs like wooden boards,” Neill wrote to Reich of his pupils’ resistance, “but children begin to loosen up very quickly, and at once begin to be hateful and savage.”
The philosopher Bertrand Russell, like Neill, preached the benefits of an unconstrained childhood and campaign for new sexual mores. Neill said that Russell’s On Education (1926) was the only book on the topic he’d read without uttering an expletive. Russell spent a week at Summerhill in 1927 before opening a school of his own, Beacon Hill, based on similar principles. He was soon disillusioned, however, and left the school after five years. The children in his care, Russell wrote, were “sinister,” “cruel,” “destructive.” The effect of giving them their freedom “was to establish a reign of terror, in which the strong kept the weak trembling and miserable.” Russell’s own children, for whom Beacon Hill was partly created (it had only twelve pupils), were, like their father, traumatized by their time at the school. “I learned to get along inside a shell,” Kate Russell said, “fending off physical and emotional assaults from others and trusting nobody.” But for Neill, the monstrous behavior of children was a stage long the path to liberation: if they were “hateful and savage” it was only because they were sloughing off the final carapace of their repressions.
The accumulator that Reich gave Neill arrived in England on the Queen Elizabeth in April 1947, along with a smaller “shooter” box with a protruding funnel for directing orgone energy rays at infections and wounds. “I sit in the Accumulator every night reading,” Neill wrote appreciatively, “re-reading the Function of the O. while I sit in the box.” Neill soon became convinced of the machine’s effectiveness: “We used the small Accu on a girl of 15 with a boil on her leg,” he said. “It cleared up in three days, and we are to have her in the big box next term.” The effects apparently defied scientific explanation: “When Lucy had a new lump on her face under the operation scar, she applied the small Accu and it went in a fortnight,” Neill marveled. He bombarded Reich with questions: Was it safe to keep an accumulator in one’s bedroom? Did you have to be naked inside it? Would it be effective in the damp English climate? How long could his daughter safely sit in the box?
Neill’s daughter, Zoe Readhead, has run Summerhill since 1985. Neill was sixty-four when his only child was born; when she was two, Picture Post ran a story saying that of all the children in Britain, she had the best chance of being free. “I remember the orgone accumulator vividly,” she told me. “It was quite chilly in there because of the zinc.” As a child Readhead was prescribed half an hour a day in the device; she recalls the red plastic cushion she sat on and the funnel or “shooter” she was encouraged to position over her ear to try to cure a recurrent earache. She also remembers that as she grew up Neill lost interest in the machine (he thought he’d been mistaken in putting an extra layer of asbestos around it), and moved it to a corner of the garage.
By the time Reich died, in 1957, he and Neill were no longer communicating. In December 1954 Neill wrote, “It gave me a great shock to find you believing in visits from other planets. No, I said, it can’t be true; Reich is a scientist and unless he sees a flying saucer he won’t accept it as reality. I can’t understand it.” Reich, whose sanity had long been an open question (Sandor Rado, who analyzed Reich for a few months in 1931, said that he was “schizophrenic in the most serious way”), had started to suffer from paranoid delusions about the world being under attack by UFOs. The armor-clad orgone box was always something of a protective shield, illustrative of Reich’s sense of being besieged, but he now built a “cloudbuster,” an orgone gun that was designed not only to influence the weather - diverting hurricanes and making it rain in the desert - but to be the first line of defense against an alien invasion. It was a kind of orgone box turned inside out, so that it could work its therapeutic magic on the cosmos.
Reich initiated the break with Neill; his young son, Peter, who was spending the summer at Summerhill, told Neill that the American planes passing over the school had been sent to protect him, or so his father said. Neill replied that this was nonsense (there was a large U.S. air base nearby), and when Reich heard of Neill’s response he wrote to his remaining supporters that Neill was no longer to be trusted. In the American edition of Neill’s Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Childhood, published in 1960, all references to Reich were deleted because the publisher considered him too controversial. (The book sold two million copies in the United States.) But Neill never turned his back entirely on his friend’s philosophy, and long after Rich’s death he persuaded Zoe to go to Norway to have vegetotherapy with another of Reich’s disciples, Ola Raknes.
Reich died of a heart attack in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in 1957, eight months after being sentenced. If Reich’s claims were no more than ridiculous quackery, as the FDA doctors who refuted them suggested, and if he was just a paranoid schizophrenic, as one court psychiatrist concluded, then why did the U.S. government consider him such a danger? What was happening in America that led Reich to become an emblem of such a deep fear?
The critic Louis Menand described Arthur Koestler, with whom Reich shared a Communist cell in Berlin, as “a slightly mad dreidel that spun out of Central Europe and across the history of a bloody century.” Reich’s story traces a similarly erratic path, and looking back at his era can help to shed new light on it. Through the history of Reich’s box it’s possible to unpack the story of how sex became political in the twentieth century, and how it encountered Hitler, Stalin, and McCarthy along the way . Reich created the modern cult of the orgasm and, influentially, held that ecstasy was a point of resistance, immune to political control. Of course, the birth control pill - licensed by the FDA in 1957 (the year Reich died) for treating women with menstrual disorders - ultimately provided the technological breakthrough that facilitated the sexual liberation of the following decade. But Reich, perhaps more than any other sexual philosopher, had already given the erotic enthusiasm of the 1960s an intellectual justification, and laid the theoretical foundations for that era.
His ideas rallied a new generation of dissenters, and his orgone box, however unlikely an idea it may now seem, became a symbol of the sexual revolution. In January 1964, Time magazine declared that “Dr. Wilhelm Reich may have been a prophet. For now it sometimes seems that all America is one big Orgone Box”:
  • With today’s model, it is no longer necessary to sit in cramped quarters for a specific time. Improved and enlarged to encompass the continent, the big machine works on its subjects continuously, day and night. From innumerable screens and stages, posters and pages, it flashes the larger-than-life-sized images of sex. From countless racks and shelves, it pushes the books which a few years ago were considered pornography. From myriad loudspeakers, it broadcasts the words and rhythms of pop-music erotic. And constantly, over the intellectual Muzak, comes the message that sex will save you and libido make you free.
Time called this new “sex-affirming culture” the “second sexual revolution” - the first having occurred in the 1920s, “when flaming youth buried the Victorian era and anointed itself as the Jazz Age.” In contrast, the children of the 1960s had little to rebel against and found themselves, Time commented, “adrift in a sea of permissiveness,” which they attributed to Reich’s philosophy: “Gradually, the belief spread that repression, not license, was the great evil, and that sexual matters belonged in the realm of science, not morals.”
In 1968 student revolutionaries graffitied Reichian slogans on the walls of the Sorbonne, and in Berlin they hurled copies of Reich’s book The Mass Psychology of Fascism at police. At the University of Frankfurt 68er (as they were called in German) were advised, “Read Reich and act accordingly!” According to the historian Dagmar Herzog, “No other intellectual so inspired the student movement in its early days, and to a degree unmatched either in the United States or other Western European nation.” In the 1970s, feminists such as Shulamith Firestone, Germaine Greer, and Juliet Mitchell continued to promote Reich’s work with enthusiasm.
However, even in his lifetime, Reich came to believe that the sexual revolution had gone awry. Indeed, his ideals seemed to run aground in the decade of free love, which saw erotic liberation co-opted and absorbed into what the historian of psychoanalysis Eli Zaretsky calls a “sexualised dreamworld of mass consumption.” Herbert Marcuse, another emigre who became the hero of a younger generation, provided the most rigorous critique of the darker side of liberation. After his initial enthusiasm for a world characterized by “polymorphous perversity,” Marcuse became cynical about it, and he ended his career with a series of brilliant analyses of ways in which the establishment adapted all these liberated ideas (the “intellectual Muzak” of the time) into an existing system of production and consumption. Reich had propagated an expressive vision of the self, but his sexualized politics of the body soon dissolved into mere narcissism as consumers sought to express themselves through their possessions. In the process, as Marcuse was early in detecting, sex and radical politics became unstuck.
It is a testament to the popularity Reich once had that his name is still remembered at all - so many of his colleagues have been forgotten. But he is now known more for his mad invention rather than for the sexual radicalism that box contained. Reich’s eccentric device might be seen as a prism through which to look at the conflicts and controversies of that era. Why did a generation seek to shed its sexual repressions by climbing into a closet? And why were others so threatened by it? What does it tell us about the ironies of the sexual revolution that the symbol of liberation was a box?

2024.05.08 16:34 Herbal_Mind Unveiling the Brain's Information Highways: A Leap Towards Understanding and Healing

In the world of neuroscience and molecular biotechnology, a groundbreaking development has emerged from the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology and the Medical University Vienna, marking a significant leap in our understanding of the brain's intricate network. Researchers, led by JĂźrgen Knoblich, have developed the first model of the brain's information highways, offering unprecedented insights into the neural connections that underpin human cognition and neurological disorders. This breakthrough, detailed in the journal Cell Stem Cell, sheds light on the brain's complex architecture, likened to a vast network of roads with thick nerve bundles connecting different regions, akin to the highways that bridge distant cities.
The focus of this research has been on modeling the long-range, heavily utilized nerve bundles, particularly the corpus callosum, which serves as a critical bridge between the brain's left and right hemispheres. In some rare cases, individuals are born without this connection, a condition linked to mutations in the ARID1B gene. By utilizing stem cells derived from patients with this mutation, the team has crafted three-dimensional brain organoids that mimic these crucial neural pathways. This approach not only illuminates the developmental processes of neuronal connections but also the impact of genetic mutations on the formation of the brain's information highways.
The collaboration with Yoshiho Ikeuchi at the University of Tokyo introduced a novel method of connecting two brain organoids through a microchannel within a 3D-printed mold, allowing researchers to observe the formation and connectivity of axonal projections. The findings revealed that organoids with the ARID1B mutation exhibited significantly fewer connecting axons, attributed to altered gene expression affecting neuronal maturation and axon generation. This model stands as the first of its kind, enabling a detailed study of essential neuronal connections and offering a new avenue for clinical research, particularly in the testing of gene therapies for patients with ARID1B mutations.
Parallel to these neurological explorations, the concept of the gut-liver-brain axis presents another frontier in understanding the interconnectedness of our body systems. Recent advances in this area highlight the complex communications between the gastrointestinal tract, liver, and brain, influencing everything from barrier permeability and gut hormones to neurotransmitter activity and immune responses. This research underscores the potential of targeted therapies that modulate this axis, offering promising strategies for treating a range of diseases that affect these interconnected systems.
The development of the brain organoid model represents a pivotal moment in neuroscience, providing a tangible representation of the brain's information highways and their role in health and disease. It underscores the importance of integrating molecular biotechnology with clinical research to unravel the mysteries of the human brain. As we delve deeper into the brain's architecture and its connections with other body systems, we stand on the brink of discovering novel therapeutic targets and interventions that could transform our approach to treating neurological disorders.

    - **Probiotic Strains (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species)**: Promotes a balanced gut microbiota, which is crucial for maintaining the gut-brain communication and overall mental well-being.
The synergy between these innovative research areas – the modeling of brain information highways and the exploration of the gut-liver-brain axis – embodies the future of neuroscience. It emphasizes the necessity of understanding the complex web of interactions within our bodies to develop more effective, targeted treatments. As we continue to explore these frontiers, we move closer to unlocking the full potential of personalized medicine, paving the way for a future where neurological disorders can be addressed more precisely and effectively.

2024.05.08 10:10 JadedSympathy1392 Exploring the Future of Money: The Rise of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs)

Exploring the Future of Money: The Rise of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs)
a futuristic digital world map Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) are digital forms of fiat money, issued and regulated by a country's central bank. Unlike cryptocurrencies, which are decentralized and largely unregulated, CBDCs represent a new frontier in the evolution of money, combining the credibility of traditional currencies with the efficiency and innovation of digital technology. As nations around the globe grapple with the potential impacts of digital currencies, CBDCs are increasingly seen as a tool for enhancing monetary policy, bolstering financial inclusion, and securing financial stability.
A futuristic digital world
The Technology Behind CBDCs
CBDCs leverage advanced technologies to provide a secure and efficient means of digital currency management. Primarily, they are built on a variety of digital ledger technologies (DLT), some of which may include blockchain systems similar to those used by cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, unlike these decentralized platforms, CBDCs operate under the centralized control of national central banks. This centralization allows for greater regulatory oversight and integration with existing financial systems.
While most CBDCs use some form of DLT, they differ in their architectural frameworks. Some are designed for general use in everyday transactions, akin to digital cash, while others are intended for high-value settlements between banks. This flexibility in design allows CBDCs to meet diverse economic and financial requirements, tailored to the specific needs of a country's economy.
Global Examples
Countries That Have Fully Implemented CBDCs
Several countries have moved beyond the experimental stage and have fully launched their own CBDCs. For example, the Bahamas introduced the Sand Dollar in 2020, making it one of the first fully operational digital currencies issued by a central bank. Similarly, Nigeria launched the eNaira in 2021, aiming to boost financial inclusion and streamline government payments. China has also been a frontrunner with its Digital Yuan, piloted in various cities and intended for wider use in boosting retail transactions and reducing dependency on physical cash.
Countries Testing or Developing CBDCs
Many nations are currently in different stages of CBDC development or pilot testing. Sweden is exploring the e-Krona to determine its feasibility in a predominantly cashless society. The European Central Bank is investigating a digital Euro to modernize its financial systems. In Asia, South Korea and Japan are conducting trials to understand the impacts of digital currencies on their economies and to ensure robust security measures are in place before full-scale implementation.
Benefits of CBDCs
Central Bank Digital Currencies offer a range of benefits that address both economic and social issues:
  1. Financial Inclusion: CBDCs can be particularly transformative in regions where traditional banking services are limited or absent. By enabling digital transactions via mobile devices, CBDCs provide access to banking services for the unbanked or underbanked populations.
  2. Efficiency and Lower Costs: Transactions with CBDCs can occur in real-time and at lower costs compared to traditional banking systems. This efficiency extends to cross-border transactions, which can be facilitated with fewer intermediaries and lower fees.
  3. Enhanced Monetary Policy: With CBDCs, central banks have a new tool at their disposal for more precise control of the money supply. This can lead to more effective responses to inflation or recessionary pressures.
  4. Counterfeit and Fraud Reduction: Digital currencies are difficult to counterfeit due to their cryptographic security, reducing the risk of fraud significantly compared to physical cash.
Challenges and Concerns
While CBDCs offer numerous benefits, they also present several challenges and concerns that need to be addressed:
  1. Privacy Issues: One of the most significant concerns with CBDCs is the potential for increased surveillance and reduced privacy. Unlike cash transactions, digital transactions can be easily tracked, raising concerns about how data is managed and used by governments and central banks.
  2. Impact on Traditional Banking: The introduction of CBDCs could disrupt the traditional banking system. With central banks offering direct digital currencies, the role of commercial banks might diminish, affecting their operational model and profitability.
  3. Technical Challenges: Implementing a robust and secure digital currency system poses significant technical challenges. Ensuring system resilience against cyber-attacks and managing the digital divide between different populations are critical for successful adoption.
  4. Economic Impact: The shift to digital currency could have unpredictable effects on national economies. Managing the transition without causing disruption to existing financial systems and economic stability is a major challenge.
Conclusion
The potential future of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) is as promising as it is complex. As countries continue to explore, develop, and implement these digital currencies, the global financial landscape is poised for significant transformation. CBDCs could enhance financial inclusivity, streamline transactions, and revolutionize monetary policy. However, the journey toward widespread adoption will require navigating significant challenges, particularly concerning privacy, the impact on traditional banking, and the technical hurdles of establishing a secure and efficient system.
As we stand on the brink of this digital currency evolution, it is crucial for policymakers, technologists, and financial experts to collaborate in creating frameworks that not only leverage the benefits of CBDCs but also safeguard against their risks. The future of CBDCs will largely depend on how these emerging issues are managed and how well the global community adapts to the shifting paradigms of digital finance.

2024.05.06 23:17 Hoes_Madx24 [rant] It’s hard to know how to act as an adult when you didn’t have strong role models in childhood

Tw: mention of suicide
My parents were supportive financially and always made sure me and my brothers had nice things and were generally happy, even when times were tough and we were on the brink of homelessness.
They were generally affectionate and sweet, but they could be very neglectful and verbally abusive as well. Especially in my teens when my mom began drinking, there were many times she would single me out with insults and kicked me out a number of times, I would have to sleep on the porch or later, in my car.
The biggest thing was that they were always just immature; they never knew how to handle things, and they would make it my problem. From when I was younger, probably around 6 or 7, and my dad would go out drinking for days and would cheat on my mom. They would fight about it, and my mom would leave. She never got the reaction she wanted from my dad because he did not care about her then, and she would use me to get the attention she wanted. She would say I was the reason she was leaving and listen to me cry and beg for her to stay. That’s left me with a deep-seated fear of abandonment.
Up until like 5 years ago when she threatened to divorce him, my dad never showed affection for my mom. He rarely said he loved her, never did nice things for her, and more often than not would just pick fights or say rude things to her for no reason. He never supported her when she was going through tough times. As such, she would take out her frustrations on me. She would have mental breakdowns since I was a little kid, and I would be the one comforting her when she would cry. I would be the one to get yelled at when I didn’t do anything wrong.
When she resorted to alcoholism a few years back, it led to all of her pent-up trauma and emotions coming out. The worst of it was when she tried to k*ll herself in front of me and my brothers and we had to stop her from grabbing my dad’s shotgun. And my dad did nothing besides yell and make the situation worse, and blame her for everything.
The only thing I learned from them when it came to any of this, was that I wanted to be the exact opposite from them. But knowing how I don’t want to be is not enough, it leaves me with a whole world of consideration for how I actually want to be. And that’s what I’ve been faffing about the past few years trying to figure out.
I had no sense of how love should be, so I was deeply insecure and avoidant of relationships up until a few years ago. As a result of having no experience and being insecure, once I started seeking love, I got myself into abusive and toxic relationships. I didn’t know what I wanted or how to act, besides knowing not to act like my father. But I went too hard in the opposite direction, and was supportive of people that did not deserve my affection.
I had no sense of how to act in stressful situations, as I was used to seeing my parents blow up when things got tough. As I didn’t know how to act, most times I would just shut down or freeze when things got stressful. I only got over that through dealing with stressful work and situations for the past few years, and now I do kind of excel in stressful work situations. But I still have a tendency to freeze in stressful personal situations.
It feels like I’ve learned far more from all the other male role models in my life besides my father.
My saving grace is that I have been aware enough of these issues the past few years to work on them and I have made a lot of progress, but I still am not the man I want to be.

2024.05.06 19:07 Arbrand Fragments of Myself

I stepped out into the overwhelming bustle of New York City, the buildings looming like sentinels over the avenues. The horizon of my Swedish hometown, where the sky stretched out in an unbroken canvas, was replaced by towering steel and concrete. With just five hundred dollars in my pocket and a suitcase, I carried my dreams of a modeling career through the throng of indifferent faces.
At the station, amid a sea of rushing people, a man holding a sign caught my eye. It read, "Apartments 4 Rent." He smiled as he approached, his timing uncanny.
"Looking for a place?" he asked, his voice smooth and reassuring.
"Yes," I replied, trying to mask the tremble in my voice. "I just got here and I need somewhere affordable."
"I'm Jack," he introduced himself with a practiced ease. "I help newcomers find good deals on apartments. How about I show you a place I think you’ll like?"
Desperation nudged my caution aside. I followed Jack onto the subway, and we traveled to a quieter part of the city. The apartment building we entered was quaintly dilapidated, whispering stories of a hundred faded lives through its cracked facade.
The apartment itself was modest, a fourth-floor unit with peeling wallpaper and a quaint air of neglect. But it was the enormous, ornate mirror in the living room that captured my attention. Amidst the modesty of the apartment, it stood grandly, its frame intricately carved, seemingly holding secrets in its reflective depths.
"The last tenant left that behind," Jack remarked, noticing my fixation. "Adds a bit of character, doesn’t it?"
“It’s beautiful,” I commented, still transfixed by the mirror. After some negotiation, Jack agreed to four fifty a month with the first three months free. The deal was too good, and Jack seemed almost too eager to close it.
Once alone, I approached the mirror, my reflection staring back at me. As I reached out to touch the cool glass, my reflection hesitated before mimicking my movement. "I must be more tired than I thought," I murmured to myself.
The next day I scoured the city for modeling gigs. I found a promising lead in a quaint café that doubled as a networking spot for creative types. An open casting call for an environmentally friendly fashion brand was my best shot—they were looking for a "fresh face with an earthy charm." The audition was the following day.
Back in my apartment, I stood in front of the mirror, pondering my outfit choices for the casting. "Which one would work?" I asked aloud to no one.
"The green one," came a whisper, so faint I thought I'd imagined it.
I hesitated, my breath catching as I stepped closer to the mirror. The room felt suddenly colder, the air thick with tension. "Who's there?" I repeated. There was a palpable silence, the sort that filled the space with an expectant pause before the mirror responded again.
"It's just us here," the voice murmured, softer this time, as if it were right beside me.
The hairs on my arm stood on end as I reached out tentatively to touch the reflective surface. My fingers brushed against the cold, smooth glass, and for a moment, I half-expected to feel another hand meeting mine from the other side.
"Us?" I echoed with a growing sense of dread. The room seemed to close in around me, the walls inching nearer with each passing second.
"Yes," the voice continued, now with a hint of coaxing warmth. "I'm here to help you, Sarah. To guide you."
"But how?" I pressed, my eyes locked on my own reflection.
"You're new here. Alone." it said. "I can help you."
I stared into the mirror, searching for any sign of trickery, any hidden speakers or technology. But there was nothing—only my own wide-eyed stare looking back at me, framed by the ornate carvings of the mirror's ancient silver.
"Why me?" I asked.
"Because you listened," it answered simply. "And because you need what I can offer."
Had I finally lost it? Has the pressure of trying to make it on my own cracked me like my mother?
I swallowed hard, my resolve hardening. "Alright," I said, "If I'm going crazy, then so be it, but I’m going to look damn fine doing it. If you can help, I'm listening."
"Good," the mirror responded, its tone almost pleasing. "Tomorrow, let them see you as you are meant to be seen. The green dress, hair pulled back to highlight your elegance, minimal jewelry to accentuate your natural grace. Confidence, Sarah, wear it like a second skin."
As I prepared for bed that night, the mirror's directives replayed in my mind. Sleep was a fleeting visitor, my dreams a jumble of reflective surfaces and whispered secrets.
The morning sun cast a new sense of determination over me. Adhering strictly to the guidance reflected in the mirror, I moved with a strange precision. The green dress embraced my contours, and my hair settled into an exact arrangement, every detail contributing to a deliberately crafted exterior.
As I ventured into the bustling city, the mirror's silent demands felt like a tangible presence around me. The audition passed in a whirlwind of glaring stage lights, snapping cameras, and soft whispers of approval. Guided by the mirror’s unseen hand, my decisions garnered subtle nods and restrained smiles from the onlookers. I had become the flawless representation of the brand's vision—an exquisite blend of natural grace and refined elegance.
When the call arrived that afternoon, confirming my new role, I faced the mirror, a mix of thankfulness and disquiet churning within me.
"Thank you," I whispered, the words bouncing softly around the barren room.
The mirror responded with a hint of arrogance, "You see? Trust in me, and you'll achieve great things."
The subsequent days were filled with a flurry of fittings, photo shoots, and a rising tide of acclaim. Each morning, I sought guidance from the mirror, and its counsel was invariably accurate. Yet, as the nocturnal sounds of the city dwindled to a whisper each night, I lay in restless contemplation, pondering the true price of my ascent.
The mirror's influence shadowed me relentlessly, a constant intimation that my rise was not solely of my own making. As my face began to grace billboards and magazine spreads, my reflection in the ornate mirror started to feel less like it was entirely mine. It seemed to belong to another entity, one that had exacted a piece of my soul in return for the realization of my ambitions.
One morning, as the early light of dawn trickled through the drapes, I groggily rose from bed. As I extended my arms in a sleepy stretch, my eyes inadvertently caught the mirror's surface. I halted abruptly. My reflection was not mirroring my drowsy movements; instead, it stood motionless, its gaze fixed intensely on me. Then, as though realizing its lapse, it abruptly synchronized with me, stretching its arms high.
"What was that?" I called out, my voice thick with both drowsiness and a surge of alarm.
"Nothing you need to worry about, Sarah," the mirror responded, its tone smooth and undisturbed. "No, explain yourself," I insisted, my heart pounding as the realms of reality and the unthinkable began to merge.
"It's complicated. Just know that I'm here to help," the mirror attempted to reassure me, but its words did little to alleviate the twisting anxiety in my stomach. I dressed in a hurry and left the apartment.
The day's events were shadowed by the morning's unsettling incident. When I returned home that evening, tension and suspicion had tightened around me like a coil. I ignored the mirror and headed straight to bed. But as I passed it, a jolt of panic seized me—I was uncertain of what reflection the mirror might now cast back at me. Fighting the impulse to look, I slammed my bedroom door shut.
A few evenings later, I encountered Michael at a gallery opening—his height complemented by a relaxed smile that seemed to illuminate the surroundings. We conversed about the arts, life in New York, and myriad topics in between. His charm was undeniable, and momentarily, I allowed myself to escape the eerie undercurrents from the mirror. I suggested we go back to my apartment, forgetting about the specter that awaited us.
As we stepped into the living room, Michael's gaze was instantly drawn to the mirror. "That's quite a piece," he commented, sparking a sudden rush of anxiety within me. I managed a nervous laugh, but the air between us grew thick with an uneasy tension that Michael could not overlook.
"I should probably get going," he stated after a stretch of uncomfortable silence, making his way toward the door.
"Wait," the words escaped me before I could stop them, echoing the silent promptings from the mirror that only I seemed to perceive. "Stay a bit longer."
I adhered to the mirror's guidance, serving drinks, laughing at his jokes, and brushing his arm with a feigned casualness. The evening transformed swiftly, the mirror's counsel turning every potential misstep into an opportunity for deeper engagement. Gradually, we found ourselves drifting towards the bedroom, the distant hum of the city fading behind the intimate rhythm of our interaction.
Later, as Michael lay sleeping deeply beside me, the room was suffused with the soft, diffused light of streetlamps filtering through the curtains. It was then that the mirror resumed its insidious whispers. "Look at him, so vulnerable, so trusting," it murmured with a vile tenderness. "You could do anything, couldn’t you? Imagine plucking a strand of his hair, feeling its texture between your fingers, and then... consuming it."
I shuddered, the mirror's grotesque suggestions branding themselves into my consciousness like a searing iron. "Stop," I gasped, my voice hoarse with horror. "Why would you suggest such a thing?"
The mirror's laughter echoed back, a cold, cruel cascade of sound. "You could end him if you wanted to. Do you realize that, Sarah? Think of the thrill, the absolute rush of power. The ultimate control over life and death—it's intoxicating, isn’t it?"
"No!" My cry was a desperate clamor, a plea for some shred of sanity amid the encroaching darkness. The room seemed to contract, the walls themselves echoing the mirror's malevolent proposals. I wrapped my arms tightly around myself, trying to hold onto the fraying edges of my reality.
As the mirror kept pouring its dark suggestions into the quiet of the night, it painted a chilling picture of calm that could be achieved through unthinkable acts. "Imagine the silence that would follow, the peace," it coaxed. "Just one quick, decisive act, and all this fear, this uncertainty—it could all be over."
Tears streamed down my face as I fought an internal struggle against the mirror's seductive darkness. Every word it uttered tempted a hidden part of me, a side I refused to acknowledge. I felt increasingly cornered, my sanity teetering on the brink of a menacing abyss, with the mirror acting as both tormentor and guide, nudging me toward a precipice I feared to approach.
Yet, the dawn brought a fragment of reprieve. I awoke to find Michael no longer beside me, his presence replaced by a simple note left on the pillow. "Thank you for a wonderful evening," it read, his handwriting steady and oblivious to the turmoil that had consumed me. The sheer normalcy of his words clashed vividly with the night's dark episodes, anchoring me back to a semblance of reality.
"I'm done," I declared, my voice resolute, a stark contrast to the trembling uncertainty that had plagued me moments before. Standing before the mirror, I felt a surge of defiance. "I don't know exactly what you are, but this ends now," I announced, hoping to sever the eerie bond that tethered me to this reflective tormentor.
The mirror, however, remained maddeningly silent, as if it had never spoken, never whispered those vile suggestions. Its stillness was unnerving, and I turned away, eager to escape its suffocating presence. My heart pounded as I reached for the apartment door, my hand unsteady but driven by the need to feel something real, something tangible. The cool metal of the doorknob under my fingers was reassuring, grounding me as I turned it with a decisive motion.
As the door swung open, a cold wave of dread washed over me. The expected hallway of my apartment building was absent, replaced instead by a surreal extension of my own living space—an impossible, endless loop of the room I had tried to escape. My heart plummeted as confusion spiraled into stark, petrifying horror; I wasn’t looking into another part of my apartment, but rather, a mirror image of it. A ghastly realization set in: I was trapped within the confines of the mirror itself.
In a frenzy, I dashed back to the mirror, my breath ragged. There, my reflection smirked back with the satisfaction of victory. It had ensnared me in this reflective prison and usurped my place in the tangible world. I pounded on the glass, desperation clawing at my throat, but my efforts met only silence—the soundless void of this mirrored dimension.
Through tear-blurred eyes, I watched helplessly as my doppelgänger sauntered over to the phone. It engaged in a brief, animated conversation, its laughter a twisted echo of my own. Then, settling on the couch with a sinister grace, it fixed its gaze directly on me, an unspoken challenge in its eyes. “Why are you so upset?” it spat. “This is my life I’ve built.”
I cried. After a few moments, the door opened, and Jack walked in. Their exchange was disturbingly cordial, and as he embraced her, the truth crashed over me like a cold wave—This was his plan all along.
I watched as Jack and my reflection waved a nonchalant goodbye and headed towards the door. In a moment of frantic desperation, I buried my face in my hands, my nails clawing into my skin. When I looked up, the sight of blood streaming down my reflection’s face gave me a lifeline. A way to lash out at the monster.
With wild abandon, I began to tear at my face, each scratch mirrored by my doppelgänger who contorted in pain. The sting of my wounds was overshadowed by a perverse joy at seeing my captor suffer. As I mutilated my features, my reflection’s agonized screams filled the room, echoing my own internal turmoil.
Without warning, the sounds of the real world—Jack’s voice, the distant hum of the city—flooded back to me. I was back in my apartment, standing before the mirror that now only showed my scarred, bleeding face and the reflection of Jack standing behind me, his expression one of horror and betrayal. “What are you doing?” he cried, looking at me in my bloodied face.
"Taking my life back," I declared. Seizing a heavy bookend, I hurled it at the mirror. The glass shattered with a satisfying crash, fragments scattering like the pieces of the life I once knew.
Picking up a sharp shard, I turned to Jack, my grip tightening as I pointed the jagged glass at him. "Get out," I snarled, the edge of the shard glinting ominously under the apartment's dim lighting. His face drained of color, Jack backed away slowly, finally turned and ran out the door without another word.
Alone, I surveyed the chaos around me. It was over—the mirror, the deceit, all of it shattered on the ground. I knew then what I had to do. Packing my few belongings, I prepared to leave behind the city that had been the stage for this dark play. With one last look at the wreckage of my apartment, I stepped into the early morning air, the first steps of my journey back to Sweden underfoot.
Of course, when I returned to my small town, the whispers and jokes about me "coming crawling back" were inevitable. But as soon as word spread about "the accident" that left my face disfigured, those whispers turned to hushed tones of sympathy rather than jest. Over time, as I've grown older, I've found happiness here. I'm content with the quiet life I've rebuilt, far from the glaring lights and sharp reflections of a past that nearly consumed me.
But just know, the next time you see a model gracing a billboard or smiling from a magazine cover, take a moment to contemplate how much of herself she had to give up. The gloss and glamor might hide more than you think—a story of sacrifice, a piece of her soul, perhaps a battle fought in silence against reflections that sought to steal more than just her image.
