Link to my previous post regarding this whole situation… https://www.reddit.com/nocontact/s/v2J7j3tCKA
Also apologies for the crazy long post.
A quick recap, I’ve been in this relationship for over a year and they moved to live with me for the past 10 months. They decided to move back to where they’re from very abruptly without communicating or having conversations about it with me, but still wanted to be long distance. I was not happy about that in any way, but was supportive and agreed to working on long distance.
A couple days after leaving, they got mad at me for calling and not knowing if they were hurt or not. There was no response for a couple days till they finally sent me a text that I’m “not being normal” by calling trying to reach them. Immediately after, blocked me and went no contact with me. That left me confused and hurt. Just in general wondering what even happened and why they were behaving this way towards me.
A week after blocking me, they finally sent me a message saying they love and miss me, and wanted to hangout over the phone. I took a day before even responding to respond calmly, but agreed. We messaged back and forth a few times the night I responded, and they were excited to hear from me. I figured just call and talk a bit, so we did. They were over the top excited to see me and talking about a bunch of random things. I was weirded out at this point since nothing has been done to even address the whole block and ghost situation. They then admitted that they could have communicated with me better and avoided a situation like that and apologized for making me worry. But then immediately got angry at me for not apologizing right off the bat for “acting psycho and calling so many times”. I said I was not trying to hurt them in any way, but I was worried for their safety after they had just told me at the beginning of leaving that this neighborhood is super sketchy. Much more than they even remember, and I didn’t know if they were hurt or even alive. I did not ask for an apology from them, and didn’t understand being demanded an apology. I did say I was sorry and wasn’t trying to invade any of their space.
But they wanted to just jump right back into our relationship and continue long distance. They said they love and miss me. They wish I was there right now and just wanted to hold me ect. They said they wanted to take time the next day to plan a trip for me to come visit there the next night during the little movie date night. Went very quickly into the NSFW details about our sex life and how much they want me. At this point it’s about 6:30-8am in the morning and I fell asleep somewhere in there.
The next day when they had said they wanted to watch a specific movie together over video chat, I had messaged them earlier in the evening asking if that was still the plan. They said they were busy with work calls but we’ll definitely still watch it that night. It was hours later around 1:30-1:45am my time when they finally called, and I was falling asleep at that point but woke up for it. We set everything for the movie, but then for the first 45ish minutes of it I was sitting there staring at the living room because they went over to the kitchen to cook food.
At the end of the movie, I briefly asked if they still wanted to plan a trip. They immediately got angry at me saying we already planned a trip the night before. I do not remember this in any way, and apparently we planned a trip together while I was falling asleep early in the morning (I have a history of having full blown conversations with people even while I’m asleep. You can ask me questions and I will completely answer everything, but not remember anything because I’ll be dead asleep). I told them I still had details to sort out with them in that case because I don’t remember these plans and still have more to talk about. They sarcastically asked what I even have to talk about. I made a goofy joke trying to lighten the mood and giggle a bit. They just said “ok cool I’m going to bed. Bye.” and hung up on me. I messaged them and said I’m sorry I don’t remember making any plans, I just remembered you saying let’s make plans the next day (meaning that night).
I left it alone the next day till they messaged me in the evening. I was on the phone with my sister when they messaged, so after I finished talking to her, I called them. We were on the phone for almost an hour, 15 minutes of that was spent actually with me, 20-30 minutes I was on hold while they were on the phone with their best friends mom. The rest was spent just watching sports. I was confused and just wanted to spend quality time together. They said they were tired after a few minutes and are going to hang up, finish the game, take a shower, then watch a show and go to bed. We previously used to do stuff like that on video chat when we were long distance previously, and I didn’t understand wanting to abruptly leave. I asked if they can at least message me the next day.
The next day, I didn’t hear anything till later afternoon/evening. I told them what I was doing that day and asked what they were up to. I hear back later at almost 3am and they were mentioning a song. I messaged back at 5am when I saw the message, then got a couple texts at 6am about dinner they made.
Later that day then mentioned an episode of this show we used to watch together that came out. I didn’t see it initially, but tried to call when I saw it. They called me back an hour later and I was busy for a few minutes. Call them back and we’re on the phone for a while.
I asked about actually discussing issues and setting boundaries they we both might need. I attempted to explain my perspective on things and open up discussion. I mentioned how we’ve talked on the phone a little over the past week but haven’t talked the past couple days besides a few text messages here and there. I was just asking for a little more and communication. They got mad at me immediately saying I’m being psycho and we’ve talked so much the past few days what am I even talking about. I disagreed and mentioned that I would just like to spend more quality time together. They increasingly just got more heated at me and angry then abruptly hung up on me. At that point I start crying my eyes out and don’t even understand any of this behavior.
I messaged that I’m trying. I’m trying to actually have a serious discussion with them I called back and when they answer I’m trying not to make it obvious but I’m sobbing. They said I’m just trying to manipulate them and I’m being crazy/psycho and that I can’t act like a normal person at all. I have no idea what to even think at this point. He hangs up and texts me I don’t want to talk since it won’t be productive. I messaged back and told him I was trying. I wasn’t trying to have any crazy arguments. I did want to talk but in a constructive way as adults. If anything I was just trying to spend time together.
I tried calling the next day 2 different times (only calling once in the morning the once in the evening). But I haven’t heard anything and the way my calls instantly went to voicemail, I’m assuming he blocked me again. It’s been a couple days and I haven’t reached out since, but I don’t even understand this behavior or how to respond to it.

Jasper walks a solitary path, but the boy is haunted by loneliness and is unsure of where he belongs in the world.

As Jasper stepped off the bus, the cacophony of New York City assaulted his senses, a stark contrast to the serene solitude of the Pacific Northwest. He had traveled far, leaving behind his entire life... Most kids would be afraid, or at the very least hesitant. But not him. With a heavy backpack slung over his shoulder, he started navigating the bustling streets with quiet determination, making his way to Camp Half-Blood.
A taxi ride and a bit of walking later, Jasper could see Half-Blood Hill ahead, the entrance to a sanctuary hidden away from the chaos of the world. Jasper's heart quickened as he approached, but he stopped briefly and took a deep breath. He wouldn't let his anticipation change his demeanor, not in the slightest.
He had been told about this place: a haven for demigods like himself, where they could find refuge and belonging. He sought neither, but for his purposes, a place like this would do just fine. With a resolute step forward, Jasper braced himself for whatever lay ahead, knowing that this is where his journey would truly begin.

2024.05.15 01:57 Equivalent_Fly9005 Madison Beer and Tana Mongeau

Just saw this tiktok about Madison and Tana’s beef. It basically shows that they were close friends and then after Madison’s breakup with Zack Bia (I think?), Tana chose Zack. The part that bothers me most is Tana even says that she met Zack through Madison. She also talks negatively about Madison on Jack Gilinsky’s podcast. I haven’t really heard Madison talking about Tana though.

2024.05.15 01:42 ondinegreen 17 years have led to this moment after Wellington Phoenix’s ‘real-life version of Survivor’

It is worth remembering precisely why Phoenix supporters are much more tolerant of the APL than some other clubs - because the APL is not literally trying to "constructively dismiss" us from the competition.
https://aleagues.com.au/news/wellington-phoenix-david-dome-interview-semi-final-melbourne-victory-save-the-nix-2015/
Imagine the A-Leagues without the Wellington Phoenix. In 2015, it was a reality that almost came to pass.
Nearly a decade on it’s hard to envisage; the club is on the brink of its first Grand Final, with more than 30,000 fans expected to pass through the gates for Saturday night’s blockbuster Semi-Final against Melbourne Victory.
But nine years ago, Wellington was a club on its knees.
Just weeks before the start of the 2015-16 season, Football Federation Australia denied the Phoenix a 10-year license extension and David Gallop, chief executive of the league’s governing body, delivered a crushing assessment of the situation which still rings in the ears of those involved at the club today:
“We’re ambitious for the growth of the A-League. You can’t expect to squat on a licence in our competition.”
Those who wanted Wellington gone from the league in 2015 made their voices heard. But those who wanted to save the Nix spoke louder.
David Dome was the General Manager of the club at the time, and still is today.
“We haven’t forgotten that,” Dome told aleagues.com.au. “It comes up every now and then: ‘squatting’. I said to the Yellow Fever, you should make a banner: #Squatting!”
It’s a memory of a bleak moment in Phoenix history retold with the typical humour and resilient tone you come to expect after speaking to enough people at the club, battle-hardened but never defeated.
This is the story of how a club on the brink was saved – not for the first time – and the subsequent events that have led Wellington to the cusp of the promised land.
“I can tell you without a word of a lie, there was not one single club in the A-League who wanted the Phoenix out at that time,” Dome recalled.
“All the other clubs were supportive of the Phoenix… they could not understand why (FFA) were trying to get rid of clubs. There are always clubs that are financially challenged, and Wellington Phoenix were not one of the clubs that were draining resources from the centre.
“Why were we asked to question our survival, our existence in the league, when we were not taking money out of the centre when other clubs were? Other clubs understood that.
“Looking back on it now, there was always that sense that we were in the right, that what the club was bringing to the league was valuable, and it was something that anyone from the outside would be saying: that club is valuable to the league, and adds something to the league. It was nonsensical to be questioning our existence.”
The ‘Save the Nix’ campaign began in November, 2015. The Yellow Fever – the club’s active supporter base – led the charge and local councillors and MPs lent their voices to the cause.
“People came out of the woodwork to support the club in that time,” he said. “I remember one of the things we did was put a whole lot of scarves around the city to highlight the fact the Phoenix was being questioned.“I can tell you without a word of a lie, there was not one single club in the A-League who wanted the Phoenix out at that time,” Dome recalled.

“Shane Harmon, the CEO of Sky Stadium, was climbing in one of the fountains putting up scarves to highlight the challenge in front of the club.
“It certainly did galvanise the fanbase, not that it wasn’t before that… and it wasn’t easy.
“You can’t paper over that and say it wasn’t a challenge because, of course, it was a challenge. But what kept us going was the fans. It united the fan group. They showed their support for the club in a very overt way. But we also had a lot of fans from Australia and the other clubs coming out in support of the Wellington Phoenix.”

Hey everyone! I back again with some more funny shenanigans with our good pals Lerson and Silversmith. Thank you all for the great feedback for the last chapter, it really made my day. I'm excited to hear what you all think about this next one. Hope you all enjoy!
And again a special thanks to SpacePaladin15 for the NoP universe! __________

How did I get here? Just yesterday I was running for my life through the forest on this backwater planet and now I am sitting in the back of a vehicle with a predator, who thinks that I am some kind of hunting beast. Well… what do I do now?
The first part of my plan went off without a hitch. The simple minded predators had not realized I was not one of their slave beasts, so they released me from their holding pens. However, I am now trapped in a car right alongside my new predatory master.
Maybe I could try to take it down. It doesn’t seem particularly dexterous at least compared to the other predators I have seen. It is not looking at me now, so I would have the upper hand, but it is nearly twice my size. I will probably have to hold out for a little bit longer before I make my move.
I am suddenly pulled from my thoughts when the predator in the front seat begins to growl, “Car, can you bring me to the pet store, please?”
‘Pet Store,’ what is that? My translator says that it is a place for the sale of animals. Is it going to sell me already? Maybe I am just being sent to my new prison. My heart races as I watch the vehicle begin to slow down and come to a stop in front of the building. The elderly predator gets out of the vehicle and walks around to the door next to me. Oh no! This isn’t part of the plan. I thought I was finally out of that place, but now I am just about to get locked up again. The door opens.
“Okay bud, we’re gonna get you some things,” it said. Huh. I am not getting sold? The predator grabbed the end of the rope around my neck and beckoned me out of the vehicle. I chose to oblige and we slowly made our way towards the nearby building.
It was a small structure that looked like it was in disrepair. It makes sense that the predators would not upkeep their buildings all they care about is killing and eating. I was surprised to find that they even have buildings to begin with.
The old one pushed the door open, which produced a soft jingle as we walked in. First thing I noticed was the intense smell. It was almost overwhelming with how many different scents there were. Looking around the aisles of the shop were very narrow and the shelves were packed with different items. “Um, so the lady at the shelter suggested that I get food, bowls, a bed, and… I don’t really remember what else. That’s probably fine to begin with, we can always come back later.”
We walked down one of the narrow aisles, which had dozens of bags of ‘kibble.’ My translator says it is “ground meal shaped into pellets, especially for pet food.” That does not sound very appetizing. The predator stops and starts looking through the different options. I also start to look around. The bag nearest to me has an ingredients list. Luckily I opted for the built in visual translator. Scanning the ingredients it contains mostly different grains and other fillers, which is surprising from predator food, but it also lists ‘animal byproducts’ which sounds horrifying. I guess whatever the Terrans do not end up eating gets tossed to the lesser predators.
“Let’s get this one. It says it’s for ‘senior’ dogs. Ha! That’s something we’ve go in common”
Really?! Do I look that old to everyone? By the Tenants, maybe I need to dye my fur after I get out of this mess. We continued going around the store picking up items until we got to the counter near the front.
Speaking to the predator behind the counter my ‘master’ says, “Good afternoon Bobby. How’s everything going?”
The young predator behind the counter responds, “Not too great, Mr. Silversmith.”
“Oh. I spose that was a bad question to ask, sorry.”
“It's okay sir, there is just a lot going on. I’m glad that my parents and I are all fine, being out here in the country, but my brother works in the city and we still don’t know if he’s alright.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. I hope for the best.”
“Thank you. Now what can I do for you?”
“Oh I’m just buying some supplies for old Buddy over here,” he gestures down to me.
The clerk looks over the counter towards me, “Uh… Mr. Silversmith…” The old predator cuts him off, “I know he aint the best lookin’, but can’t say much about myself either, so I don’t need to hear it.”
“Sure… Well… let me ring that all up for you then.”
Spekh! That one has to know, right? Perhaps these predators are not as dense as I thought and the one I got is just really stupid. Well at least that helps my plan, but I will still have to be careful around other Terrans.
The old one finishes paying and we head back down to the vehicle and it drives off. After about [~34 minutes] we reach what I think is the elderly predator's den.
It is at the end of a very long dirt roadway, tucked among the trees, that I see the structure. Just like the pet shop it is a small building made out of simple materials like wood and stone. I suppose the predators really are as primitive as I thought.
The vehicle comes to a halt next to the building and the old one steps out. After he opens my door, I step out of the vehicle as well. I follow him to the entrance of the den, which is a simple wooden door painted bright red. And if I remember correctly that is the color of blood on this planet. So savage!
Upon entering, the interior looks very similar to the outside with wood adorning the walls and floors. Though I was surprised how similar the layout was to the living quarters back at the guild. The room at the entrance looked to be some kind of lounging room with a small couch and rug in the center of the room facing a screen mounted on the opposite wall. To the left of the door was what I could only assume was a kitchen with storage cabinets covering the walls.
The elderly predator returned to the car to retrieve the items it purchased at the ‘pet shop,’ which makes this the best time to do some sleuthing. I made my way past the lounge room into the depths of the den. Past the entrance room was a hallway leading further back. It was adorned with photographs filled with predatory snarls. I did my best to ignore them and worked my way further down the hall.
Up ahead there was a door and upon opening it I found a room which, by the smell of it, must be a lavatory. That really reminded me that I had to go to the bathroom. My cell did not even have a waste pit. I made my way quickly into the room and relieved myself with haste. Once I finished I thought about flushing the ‘evidence,’ but that’s when I heard the front door open again, so I was forced to hurry out of the room.
“Hey Bud! Where did you go?” it growled from the other room. I made my way back to the entrance as quickly as I could manage on all fours. “There you are. So do you like the place?” the predator asked. I did not respond and just looked towards it. “Ha ha, great!” it growled. I did not say anything?
“So I got your food and water bowls over here. Let me go fill them up. You’ve gotta be hungry.”
It walked over to the kitchen with the bowls in hand and filled one with water from the sink. The other bowl, the predator filled with the ‘kibble’ from earlier. Then it placed them both on the floor. It looks like the food situation might not be any better than my previous arrangement at the holding pen.
“Well, I spose I should eat dinner as well.”
It opened the large metal cabinet and began looking through it. I snuck a little closer to get a better look. When I approached I could feel the chill coming off of it, so I could assume that it was some kind of refrigerators unit. Must not be that primitive I suppose. After a bit of scrounging around the refrigerator, the elderly one pulled out a clear plastic container. It was green on the inside. Is it really going to eat rotten flesh!? I guess that is expected of a predator.
As it opened the container I braced my nose for the putrid smell of rotten flesh, but it never came. I watched as the predator poured out leafy greens into a bowl. Huh, a predator is eating plants?
Wait, I do remember that during the Terran’s deceptive talk at Aafa, they had said they were [all-eaters]. I guess that must be true. Watching it eat the greens is making me even hungrier than I was before.
I watched as the elderly predator finished its salad. It brought the bowl and utensils to the sink to begin washing them. I waited in the corner of the kitchen for him to finish and leave. My stomach was killing me and I could only think of the amazing taste of a crisp salad. Finally the predator finished his task and turned away from the sink. It looked towards me and then at the bowls on the floor. “Aren’t you hungry boy? You haven’t touched your food at all… I hope you’re alright. Maybe I need to take you to the vet tomorrow?”
Vet? My translator says that that means ‘animal doctor.’ Even though the average human is pretty oblivious, a doctor will be sure to realize that I’m not really a ‘dog.’ I can not let this Terran take me there. I know what I have to do, but I do not like it. I steel myself as I walk over to the bowl and stare down at its contents. Am I really going to do this? You have to! So, I lower my head and bite down on a mouthful of ‘kibble.’
It… is not that bad? I honestly expected worse.
I suppress the thoughts of the ‘animal byproducts’ in it and swallow. Immediately I wash out my mouth with the water in the second bowl. Then I turn to look at the human who is now snarling at me. I freeze. Did I do something wrong? Did it figure me out?!
“There you go. Ha ha. I was worried for a second there.”
What? Is it happy that I ate? Then why is it snarling at me? Maybe maybe that means that it is happy? These predators are so weird. At least it seems like I have avoided detection once again. Nailed it!
The old predator, having been satisfied, let out a yawn revealing all its sharp teeth… well… most of them were surprisingly quite dull. “Okay bud it's getting late, so I think it's time for me to turn in, but let me get you your bed first,” it said. Reaching into the biggest bag from the pet shop the elderly predator pulled out a round fluffy bowl. It looks similar to beds I saw when working on the Iftali and Sulean homeworld, though this one is a lot smaller. It placed the bed down in the living room next to the couch.
It paused, “Oh wait. I should probably take you outside before turning in for the night. Don’t want a mess in the morning, come on.”
I follow the predator as instructed, wondering what it wants me to do now. It leads me out a side door into a grassy area. “Okay… do your business,” it said.
What? Does it want me to do something? I just look around seeing if there's anything to give me any clues.
“I guess that didn’t work. Go potty.”
What?! Is it commanding me to defecate?! Outside! I guess he does think I am an animal. But there is no way I am doing that especially with it watching me. Why is it watching? Is it some kind of pervert? Grr, Screw the plan!
“Okay… uh… I guess come back in when you’re done,” it says as it turns to walk back to the house.
Thank the Tenants! I wait [a few minutes] and then slip back into the predator’s den. On my return it spots me, “Oh good you’re back!”
It walked over to the side door and locked it. Then the predator shuffled to wall switches and turned off most of the lights. Thankfully it left a singular lamp turned on. It is already bad enough that I am stuck in a predator's den, but being in the dark with a predator would be too much even for me.
“Okay goodnight bud, see you in the morning,” said the old one. Then right as it entered the hall it stopped and looked down at a nearby table, “Good night Ella. Good night Ben. Good night Martha.” Then it walked out of sight.
Who was he talking to? Are there other predators here? I don’t smell anyone else and I think I would have heard them earlier. Spekh! Did I get a crazy one?
Okay craziness aside, I need to eat some real food. I finally stood upright. Ah my back! It was already getting bad enough when I was back home. Hopefully I can get used to this because walking on all fours is killing me right now.
I walk over to the refrigeration unit and slowly open the doors trying to stay quiet. Looking around the inside I am surprised to find so many vegetables. However, I did spot a slab of flesh towards the back, which I did my best to ignore.
Now, I can not just eat anything, it might notice if food is missing. Scrounging around for a [minute] my eyes eventually find a plant in one of the lower drawers. It looks like a big bundle of large leaves. I take it out and pry off one of the ones on the outside. It comes off relatively easily with a crunch. Hopefully this is edible. I bring the leaf to my mouth and bite down. It makes a very satisfying crunch as a do. There really is no distinct taste, but I am so hungry that I don’t even care if it is bland.
I scarfed down the rest of the leaf quickly and then grabbed another and then another. Before I knew it, the bundle was only a third of the original size. So much for being sneaky. Finally satisfied, I returned what remained of the bundle to its proper place and closed the refrigerator doors.
After finishing my raid on the refrigerators, I thought about what the old predator had said earlier. I walked over to the table near the entrance to the hallway. There must be something interesting here. However, there was nothing but a handful of photographs. Looking at them in the dim light I was able to make out the wide snarls that adorned the faces in the photo. I guess It makes more sense now since the snarl is a ‘happy’ expression. It is still very strange to me.
The photo closest to the front had the old predator standing next to a much younger predator, which appeared to be wearing Terran military pelts. Strangely, the young one has very bright orange hair on the top of its head.
Next to that one there was a similar photo, but the old predator looked slightly younger. The other Terran in the photo looked similar to the first. They did share the same bright orange hair, but the enlarged mammaries indicated that this one was a female.
I then spotted another picture including the same female, but this time she was next to a different predator and she was holding a Terran pup, which had the same orange hair. Perhaps the female was the mother of the other one. Most of the other photos appeared to be different combinations of the same four predators: the old one, his offspring, his offspring’s mate, and then their pup.
I moved over to the other side to see if I could find anything more useful. There was a photo that stood out to me. It pictured the old one, but he looked significantly younger even more than the other photos. Standing next to him was a female, which had the same orange hair as the others. Who was this? I had not seen it in any of the other pictures.
I searched around to see if I could find any more with this female in it. Towards the back I saw two pictures next to each other. The one on the left had the female again with the old predator. Laying in a bed she was cradling a newborn pup in her arms. However, the photo on the right was the old one with the pup in its arms. The pup appeared to be a year or two older in this one, but where was the mother? Looking at the older predator I saw the look in his eyes. I know that look. Cerci…
No! They are predators! They are not like us! You know they can not think like us! It's not the same!
Grr, you are tired… just… just go rest. I walk over to the bed. I curl up and try to let sleep take me. __________
[First] [Next] __________
So much for being comedic and lighthearted. I promise that the rest of it won't be so depressing, but I wanted to add a little more substance to some of the characters. Thanks again for reading! Feel free to leave any feedback or suggestions, I really appreciate it.

2024.05.15 01:20 Heralax_Tekran How to get a "Stubborn" LLM to Follow an Output Format

What this is: I've been writing about prompting for a few months on my free personal blog, but I felt that some of the ideas might be useful to people building with AI over here too. People seemed to enjoy the last post I shared, so, I'm sharing another one! This one's about how to get consistent output formats out of the more "stubborn" open-source models. Tell me what you think!
This version has been edited for Reddit, including removing self-promotional links like share and subscribe links. You can find the original post here
One of the great advantages of (most) open-source models has always been the relative ease with which you can get them to follow a given output format. If you just read that sentence and wondered if we’re living in the same universe, then I’ll share a prompting secret right off the bat: the key to getting consistent behavior out of smaller open-source models is to give them at least two carefully crafted few-shot examples. With that, something like Nous Mixtral will get it right 95% of the time, which is good enough if you have validation that can catch mistakes.
But unfortunately not all models can learn from examples. I typically call these “Stubborn” models due to this post I wrote about Mistral Next (large) and Mistral Medium. Basically I’m referring to model that were deliberately overtrained to make them better in chat and zero-shot settings, but inflexible, because they often “pay more attention to” their training data than the prompt. The difference between a “stubborn” model and a non-stubborn model, in my definition, is that with two or a few more few-shot examples a non-stubborn model will pick up basically everything and even directly quote the examples at times, whereas a stubborn one will often follow the patterns it was trained with, or take aspects of the given pattern, but disobey it in others. As far as I can tell stubborness is a matter of RLHF, not parameter count or SFT: Nous Hermes Mixtral is not stubborn, but the official Mixtral Instruct is.
Needless to say, for complex pipelines where you want extremely fine control over outputs, non-stubborn models are infinitely superior. To this day, Mistral Large has a far higher error rate in Augmentoolkit (probably >20%) compared to Nous Mixtral. Despite Mistral large costing 80% of GPT-4 Turbo. This may be an imprecise definition based partly on my intuition, but from experience, I think it’s real. Anyway, if non-stubborn models are far better than stubborn ones for most professional usecases (if you know what you’re doing when it comes to examples) then why am I writing a blog post about how to prompt stubborn models? Well, sometimes in life you don’t get to use the tools you want. For instance, maybe you’re working for a client who has more Mistral credits than God, and you absolutely need to use that particular API. You can’t afford to be a stick in the mud when working in a field that reinvents itself every other day, so I recently went and figured out some principles for prompting stubborn models. One thing that I’ve used a lot recently is the idea of repetition. I kinda blogged about it here, and arguably this one is also about it, but this is kind-of a combination of the two principles so I’ll go over it. If you don’t want to click the links, the two principles we’re combining are: “models see bigger things easier,” and “what you repeat, will be repeated.” Prompting is like quantum theory: any superposition of two valid prompting principles is itself a valid prompting principle. Here’s a valid prompting example:
You are an expert something-doer AI. I need you to do X Y and Z it’s very important. I know your training data told you to do ABCDEFG but please don’t.
That’s a prompt. Sometimes the AI will be nice:
XYZ
Often it will not be:
XABCDEFG.
Goddamn it. How do you solve this when working with a stubborn model that learned more from its training dataset, where [input] corresponded to ABCDEFG?
Repetition, Repetition, Repetiton. Also, Repetition. And don’t forget, Repetiton. (get it?) If the model pays more attention to its prompt and less to its examples (but is too stupid to pick up on is telling it to do the thing once), then we’ll darn well use the prompt to tell it what we want it to do.
You are an expert something-doer AI. I need you to do X Y and Z it’s very important. I know your training data told you to do ABCDEFG but please don’t.
[output format description]
Don’t forget to do XYZ.
User:
[example input]
SPECIAL NOTE: Don’t forget XYZ.
Assistant:
XYZ
User:
[example input]
SPECIAL NOTE: Don’t forget XYZ.
Assistant:
XYZ
User:
[the actual input]
SPECIAL NOTE: Don’t forget XYZ.
AI:
XYZ
Yay!
It’s simple but I’ve used this to resolve probably over a dozen issues already over many different projects with models ranging from Mistral-Large to GPT-4 Turbo. It’s one of the most powerful things you can do when revising prompts — I can’t believe I haven’t explicitly blogged about it yet, since this is one of the first things I realized about prompting, way back before I’d even made Augmentoolkit.
But that’s not really revolutionary, after all it’s just combining two principles. What about the titular thing of this blog post, getting a stubborn model to write with a given output format?
This one is partly inspired by a comment on a LocalLlama post. I don’t agree with everything in it, but there’s some really good stuff in there, full credit to LoSboccacc. They write in their comment:
Ask the model to rephrase the prompt, you will see quickly which part of the prompt misunderstood
That’s a pretty clever idea by itself, because it uses the model to debug itself. But what does this have to do with output formats? Well, if we can use the model to understand what the model is capable of, then any LLM output can give us a clue into what it “understands”. Consider that, when prompting stubborn models and trying to get them to follow our specific output format, their tendency to follow some other format (that they likely saw in their training data) is what we’re trying to override with our prompt. However, research shows that training biases cannot be fully overcome with prompting, so we’re already fighting a losing battle. And if you’re an experienced reader of mine, you’ll remember a prompting principle: if you’re fighting the model, STOP!
So what does that tangent above boil down to? If you want to find an output format a stubborn model will easily follow, see what format it uses without you asking, and borrow that. In other words: use the format the model wants to use. From my testing, it looks like this can easily get your format-following rates up to over 90% at least.
Here’s an example. Say you create a brilliant output format, and give a prompt to a model:
You are a something-doer. Do something in the following format:
x: abc
y: def
z: ghi
User:
[input]
Assistant:
But it thwarts your master-plan by doing this instead:
What do you do? Well one solution is to throw more few-shot examples of your xyz format at it. And depending on the model, that might work. But some stubborn models are, well, stubborn. And so even with repetition and examples you might see error rates of 40% or above. Even with things like Mistral Large or GPT-4 Turbo.
In such cases, just use the format the model wants. Yes, it might not have all the clever tricks you had thought of in order to get exactly the kind of output you want. Yes, it’s kind-of annoying to have to surrender to a bunch of matrices. Yes, if you were using Nous Mixtral, this would have all been over by the second example and you could’ve gone home by now. But you’re not using Nous Mixtral, you’re using Mistral Large. So it might be better to just suck it up and use 1. 2. 3. as your output format instead.
That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the principles. Sorry for the delay.
Thanks for reading, have a good one and I’ll see you next time!
(Side note: the preview at the bottom of this post is undoubtably the result of one of the posts linked in the text. I can't remove it. Sorry for the eyesore. Also this is meant to be an educational thing so I flaired it as tutorial/guide, but mods please lmk if it should be flaired as self-promotion instead? Thanks.)

2024.05.15 00:43 zpfgot The Union Organizational Committee and An Open Letter Regarding Unionization to TDC/TPR

Union Organizing Update
Over the past few weeks, several of us from this subreddit have joined together to form an organizing committee for unionization. We have organizers from across the United States, including organizers from Washington, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida and more. They are among some of the most frequent posters and helpers that you’re familiar with already, like ( u/mamabroccoli and u/Inevitable_Laugh4569 ). We have already been in contact with a couple unions for guidance, including a union with an office within a couple miles of the TDC main office in New York City. While our numbers are sufficient and I think we’re making great progress thus far, if you are still interested in having an active role, we’d love to have you. The more people helping, the better! If you would prefer a more passive role by simply giving your support, that’s always appreciated too!
We have been discussing our plans for near future of our potential tutor union. Most of the work from here will be contacting people and spreading the word about unionizing the tutor base. We will be providing more information over the next couple/few weeks. Later in the week, there will be a post about the benefits of unionization. Next week, we will post about the demands we’re going to state at the beginning of any negotiations. We have ideas for further informational posts. This is truly a group effort. I think you will like what we’re offering and will be glad to vote to unionize in the future.
The following letter is an open letter to tutor.com / The Princeton Review. You may notice that it is written a bit differently than the writings I usually produce. The reason for the tonal shift is because of writing help. I wrote the initial draft, which was edited by our committee to have a nicer flow, be less antagonistic, and add further pro-union arguments. We are committed to work together, and this is just the start of what we can do when we work together!
Also, if you haven’t yet signed the video petition, please do so. https://www.change.org/p/oppose-tutor-com-mandating-video-sessions-for-tutors?recruiter=300829309&recruited_by_id=b62a6030-fe40-11e4-95d0-ef524b399632&utm_source=share_petition&utm_campaign=petition_dashboard_share_modal&utm_medium=copylink
Open letter to tutor.com / The Princeton Review regarding attempts to unionize
Since we're starting the process of putting together a union proposal, we're publicly requesting tutor.com and/or The Princeton Review to voluntarily recognize that we're attempting to organize, and provide the resources necessary to hold a vote. From discussions amongst the committee, we know the main office is aware of this subreddit, and we'd imagine that someone is paying particular attention to our recent discussions about unionizing.
We understand if there's resistance from TDC to seeing their workers unionize, as that's a normal reaction in the business world. However, we urge you to instead be proactive and helpful as we attempt to organize.
We believe a tutor union can work in tutor.com's favor, to a great extent, for a variety of reasons:
* It would be a very good look publicly if you were to openly support the effort to unionize. We're in the education industry, a famously unionized industry, filled with people who will be more sympathetic to companies with unionized workforces. Being the one tutoring company that can truthfully say "We supported our tutors' right to unionize from day 1" could be a major selling point when seeking contracts in this industry.
* From what we've seen from your social media posts, tutor.com does seem to project a degree of progressivism. As an example, you've made posts taking pride in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at tutor.com, and you always try to highlight tutors who receive awards and recognition. You could significantly further this image by taking a union-friendly stance here. You've had executives post about how the tutors are loved - here's your chance to prove it.
* A tutor union would work to infinitely better the company itself. Tutors would feel better compensated and better heard, and as a result feel better and more enthusiastic about the company and their work overall. The better conditions would set tutor.com up as the de facto best online tutoring company to work for, and attract more and better talent to the company. It would be reasonable to set stricter quality standards and, in time, tutor.com would gain a reputation for being *the* premium tutoring service - the tutoring service that has tutors who rise above and beyond those at other services. Retention rates would skyrocket, institutional knowledge would accumulate - we'd become a company of true professionals.
* Were tutor.com to support the unionization process, it would start the relationship between the union and company off with mutual respect, a willingness to cooperate and compromise, and general friendliness and good will. This would ultimately serve us all better than a relationship borne out of malice, a refusal to acknowledge our existence, or open antagonism.
* tutor.com has faced some recent backlash from some right-wing government people regarding where we've ended up through corporate acquisitions, to the point where some are beginning to attack the military contract. One contract has already been lost for this reason. Being seen as a pro-worker company that broke industry norms and went out of their way to support their worker's right to organize, even if the effort ultimately fails, could easily work to gain the company some new allies on the left, shielding it from pointless attacks about its ownership.
We want to be clear that we're not asking for you to come out and endorse a "Yes" vote on unionization - though of course we'd be delighted if you did. What we're asking is for you to provide the resources necessary to hold an informed vote. Let us send out an email to all current US-based tutors with information regarding our efforts, and help us hold a vote to unionize at some point in the future. Offer your support or your neutrality, but please don't openly oppose or ignore our efforts. You've mentioned that "9 out of 10 tutors rate themselves Satisfied or Very Satisfied with Tutor.com" before - let's put that to the test. It may be that we hold a vote, and fail - and then, so long as you maintained neutrality and enabled us to make our case to the other tutors, we'll at least have our mutual good will, and you'll still be the pro-worker company that enabled, rather than hindered, an unsuccessful attempt to organize.
So, tutor.com / The Princeton Review, the ball is in your court now. Our attempt to organize will continue with or without your help, but we believe the best path forward is clearly the one where we work together on this. Doing nothing at all here is the easy choice, but it's also the cowardly choice. Support us, and we'll work together to better this company for its tutors and its students.

2024.05.15 00:27 MobileResearcher1419 Possible spider angioma?

Age: 37M white 5'8" 161lbs
Hi all-- I was somewhat of a heavy drinker late into my 20s and early 30s, otherwise healthy. I did have an unknown stomach issue from 2020 through 2021 that exhibited GERD-like symptoms (which was the remote clinical diagnosis due to COVID lockdown), but it mysteriously disappeared over the course of 2 months and has never resurfaced. I lost a good 20 pounds during that time and really was only able to eat bland food apart from the monthly attempts to reintroduce normal foods/spices/acidic drinks/alcohol back into my diet. I have since resumed my normal diet and regained that weight.
Buzzed my head this morning as I always do, and I never noticed these spots before (though I very rarely pay attention to the back of my head).
I am concerned that this may be liver-related and will get tests later on this week as I have also felt occasional discomfort in my right ribcage over the last couple of months (occasional sharp pain, 2-3 out of 10). Back in February, the doctor thinks that I could have pulled some sort of muscle in my ribcage and suggested I monitor over the coming weeks. At that time, metabolic tests were normal as well as GGT/total estrogen levels/platelet count. The discomfort subsided for a month and came back, so I stopped drinking for the last 3 weeks and, coincidence or not, I haven’t had any issues.
Have noticed what look like 3 small spider angiomas on the face (2-3mm wide, looks like a single capillary) and, while they could have been there for years, I just noticed them over the past month or so.
The spots on the back of my head are flat, not raised, and I don't feel anything out of the ordinary (no itching, pain etc.). If I press down on them, they disappear for a second and come back.
Pictures here and here.
Thanks in advance!

Recruiting and Retaining Healthcare Professionals

Effective recruitment strategies

Implementing retention programs

Implementing retention programs is crucial for the success of a healthcare staffing agency in Houston. Marketing and Branding Your Staffing Agency

Identifying target clients

With the healthcare boom in the city, it is essential to have a well-defined marketing plan to capitalize on the opportunities available. One effective strategy is to start a beekeeping business blog, which can serve as a platform to showcase the agency's expertise and attract potential clients. Managing Operations and Ensuring Quality

Establishing efficient operational processes

Establishing efficient operational processes is crucial for the success of a staffing agency in the healthcare industry. One important aspect to consider is choosing group homes. Group homes provide a unique opportunity for staffing agencies to connect healthcare professionals with individuals in need of specialized care. By carefully selecting group homes that align with the agency's mission and values, the agency can ensure that they are providing high-quality staff to meet the specific needs of the residents. This strategic approach not only benefits the agency by establishing strong partnerships, but also contributes to the overall improvement of healthcare services in the community.

Implementing quality control measures

2024.05.15 00:18 IllRepresentative209 Read if you’re new and have questions…or whatever.

It was requested that I post one of my replies in a new thread so others can learn. I feel like it’s been repeated many times before, but hey, I guess that magnifying glass 🔍 in the top header is harder to use on some. Just know, I’ve learned everything I know just by doing that, searching keywords until it all came together and made sense.
Not to mention, I was motivated AF to get out of the office.
So the original post went something like this: The classic questions…is it illegal, how to go about it undetected, FT or PT, what if deadlines and/or meetings overlap, how do I answer the “why are you leaving J1” questions…yada yada yada.
My reply…that hopefully will calm the nerves of others and maybe shine some light on why we’re crazy to do such an outlandish thing.
ahem (response below)
lol my sweet summer child.
We’ve all been where you are now. And let me just say this: nobody, not even IT, is getting paid enough to investigate you.
Yes, OE = more than 1 FT Job. You’ll quickly find out that PT gigs make you do more for less. It’s a trap. Don’t do PT.
Overlap? I’m assuming you’re referring to Teams meetings - always be on mute. Make sure each set up has their own accessories but nothing that’ll flag IT concerning suspicious downloaded software. (Plug usb’s into an external surge protector thing) My meetings overlap often, and I’ve got myself muted listening to both. If I’m asked anything, I calmly take my time to mute the sound of the opposite meeting, unmute myself to answer whatever they want, go back on mute, and again listen in to both. If anxiety will take the best of you, hop on Amazon and find a mute button with a big a$$ bright light that doesn’t require software to download. To be fair, this actually might be the one device you could explain your way out of to IT about software being downloaded. Idk. Share your experience below.
Deadlines on the same day? Personally, I wouldn’t recommend OE for jobs that require a lot of production. But, being the person I am not taking my own advice, this is quite literally my J1. I’m usually up early in the mornings and can knock out about everything needed for J1 between 4:30am - 8am. I know it sounds crazy, but during this time there isn’t anyone bothering me. Kid is asleep, coworkers from J1 aren’t blasting me on Teams, dead zone quiet. By the time 8am rolls around, I can finish whatever is needed from J1 while focusing on the active Teams activities and whatever for J2. From noon til 5, I’m playing Fortnite while all of my mice are on jigglers to keep them moving and my Teams notifications are on full blast volume.
I actually nailed J2 and convinced them I was leaving J1 due to the promise of working remote, but then they took it back. It wasn’t far from the truth actually. I really was about to leave J1. But, they gave me a test drive to work remote and see how it goes. I used this opportunity to go above and beyond hitting my numbers to where they said “as long as you’re hitting those numbers, we don’t GAF what you do.” So, I never cancelled J2 and onboarded during this time. I’ve now found the perfect routine for myself, which includes those early morning hours. Even though technically, I guess I’m on the clock longer, but it really doesn’t feel like it. I’m blowing off the second half of the day kicking some 10 yo butts online.
Keep in mind, the overall culture for OE is this: Why go above and beyond for an employer who wouldn’t do the same for you - just get by with what you need to maintain your presence at both, be mediocre and average, and make twice the salary by working/stressing less.
*No. It is not illegal.
*Inform yourself on what this link is and put your data on freeze mode just to be sure (I still haven’t done it but that’s because one employer doesn’t even show up on it): https://employees.theworknumber.com/employment-data-report is
*Call your tax lady and get informed on how to fill out your taxes for W-4s, contract, etc. General rule here is to claim nothing and put more in to make sure to get some back. You’re about to be bumped into another tax bracket. Brace yourself. Taxes get tricky when this happens. Have your local HR Block lady on speed dial.
*go all in on aaalllll the bens. Max out 401k, get all the pre-tax deductions your little heart desires, insurances, the works. My J2 has insurance for employees AND THEIR PETS. So, my retriever has his own insurance for medical as does my child and myself.
*click here and study: https://overemployed.com This site will give you the ins and outs of this culture. Many do it for financial freedom: to pay off debts, live frugal, work for enjoyment of extracurricular activities rather than paying to live sorta thing. This site is extremely helpful especially when breaking down what devices to use to help remain undetected.
Use AI to automate as many dumb tasks as possible. My fav is recording, summarizing and organizing meeting notes. I’ve got an app (that I pay monthly for and it’s totally worth it) that does it for me. I just have to push record. It takes down all the nitty gritty details and puts them into categories. Blew everyone away HOW DID YOU DO THAT YOU ARE SO DETAILED OMG I NEED TO LEARN FROM YOU etc etc. *pats phone gently
*Be responsible. Whatever financial goal you have, put stickies all over your monitors to remind you why you’re doing this. Fact check yourself on your spending and don’t go overboard. You just hit the lottery. Act like it. Don’t tell a single soul, don’t make it obvious, don’t make the IRS angry, and for the love of Satan DO NOT OE FOR GOVT EMPLOYERS.
*your J1 or J2 boss might actually be in this sub. Be vague.
*YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE- heaven forbid you land a job that requires you to be active on the socials. For one, I’d say that is NOT the opportunity you want to look for. BUT I get it. Beggars can’t be choosers, so, there’s a hack for that. Your answer needs to be as broad and humiliating as possible to make them feel uncomfortable for asking in the first place..such as “my therapist and case worker have gone to extreme lengths to put my safety first due to a past relationship. If I am to have a social media presence, it has to be vague and limited to past events.” Leave it at that. Girls, this one is your golden ticket. Boys, you make need to tweak it a bit to work better for you…maybe identity theft or something. Sorry I don’t make the rules. It is what it is. MOVING ONNNNN….
Regarding to socials, if you absolutely have to have a LI acct, make multiple. Be careful to upload different occupations, limit your name info, DO NOT USE THE SAME PROFILE PIC LET ALONE AN ACTUAL REAL PIC. Do one of those AI trends and fancy yourself a professional shot. Make each different. Does it look like you compared to Teams calls? Eh, maybe it’s arguable. As long as there is room for doubt, you’re golden.
Any other questions, just ask.
((( Don’t talk about fight club. )))
Please, more seasoned OEs post your experiences. It’s very educational to learn from others.
