2024.04.29 13:36 Unlikely-Season2966 On the spot essay tips

I saw there was a post asking for tips preparing for the on the spot essay. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but this is just from my personal experience and from discussions with people that have already gotten in. ( i applied r3 and am awaiting interview call fingers crossed)
You guys probably already know most of this but I'll just say them anyway. 1. Strongly recommend have a standard boilerplate introduction. Some sort of basic introduction that you can modify according to the topic to help you get the essay started. Like for example if the topic is about a problem of some sort, my introduction was something along the lines of "the global community is grappling with various challenges, such as the looming threat of the climate crisis, the crucial fight for LGBTQ+ rights and the pervasive sense of political instability that casts an unsettling shadow worldwide. Among them, a pressing problem is xyz. 2. Whatever topic it is, always mention the disadvantages of the topic, like for example if the topic is Automated Cars, a little note on job displacement or other relevant points can show the person reading it that you understand the topic holistically and from all angles 3. So I had a few transitional sentences prepped and ready to go. For example whenever I started the paragraph on disadvantages, i would always mention something like "One should keep in mind that every rose has a thorn" and then go on to talk about the disadvantages. 4. Most people will tell you that you don't need to necessarily prepare for the on the spot essay explicitly, however if you're extremely paranoid and worried like me, I just made a list of a bunch of topics people in this subreddit have mentioned they've got in previous AATs. (Just an add on, my topic was how have online learning platforms transformed traditional modes of education) (the list is at the bottom of all this). Its not an exhaustive list but its a good starting point. 5. Obviously split the essay in the paras (like intro, advantages, disadvantages, conclusion), and THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD DO AFTER YOU SEE THE TOPIC IS NOT TYPE ON THE KEYBOARD, BUT JUST JOT DOWN A FEW BULLET POINTS THAT INSTANTLY COME TO MIND AND A COUPLE OF KEYWORDS. This really really helped me just get through the initial 200 word. I ended up writing 750 however anything around 400-500 is the sweet spot in my opinion. (Some maniacs are out there writing 1000 how tf????)
Topics :
1. "LGBTQ+ rights cannot be a legislative and judicial priority for a country with significant poverty issues." Express your views for or againsxt this statement. (same thing with whether countries should have a space program while dealing with poverty bc my friend got that topic)
2. Globalism has helped in advancing the cause of humanity, and any loss of local culture and independence is just collateral. Express...
3.The government regulation of social media is immoral and will curtail the last space of freedom. Express...
4.Artificial Intelligence replacing jobs
5.being apolitical is political
6.How has the internet affected marketing
7.Social media and education
8.How social media lingo has changed how we interact with people
9.Which of the dead people int he world would you want to have a conversation with
10.will institutionalized menstrual leaves help or increase the discrimination faced by women 11.how emoticons have changed communication
  1. armchair activism and if it actually help in any way
13.the other was about privacy in india and the government's take on them "if you have nothing to hide, then why is there an issue"
14.does violence depicted in media lead to violent behaviour
15.Sports keep us fit and healthy but competitive sports can be dangerous for an athlete. Elaborate.
16.should military service be made mandatory
17.comment on how nostalgia has become a commodity nowadays
  1. ‘I choose my gender each time I open my closet.’ Do you agree or disagree
19.Mine was something on whether college-education can help uplift economically-weaker sections of the society. And one of my friends’ topic on clothing choices and gender.
  1. automated cars and AI taking over jobs
  2. Fictional superhero films show worlds similar to the real world where a hero is needed to fix its problems, do you agree with this
22.should countries host events like Olympics and gave examples of how previous events wasted a lot of money and on the contrary, a lot of countries are still very much interested in hosting these events and asked me whether it was a good deal to host these events.
23.Universal Basic Income good or bad
There was also something about harassment of women in the workplace, idk how it was phrased bc my friend wrote it in r1 (OBVIOUSLY DON'T MENTION ADVANTAGES OF THIS ONE)
Note : You don't need to go in extreme detail on most of these topics, just some preliminary research can go a long way.
Additional Note : After you've done a decent amount of research (honestly i just took 1 day), just write a couple of practice essays and see how many words you reach, if you're consistently hitting the 400 word mark, I think you're good to go. OH AND ALWAYS DOUBLE CHECK THE ESSAY AFTERWARD, YOU WOULD HAVE 100% MADE A SEMANTIC MISTAKE SOMEWHERE, AND MAYBE A SPELLING MISTAKE TOO. (Oh do these practice essays in something that doesn't have automatic spell check that underlines what you spelled wrong so you can make sure you don't make any spelling mistakes during the AAT)

2024.04.29 12:20 como365 Missouri Attorneys General are prolific censors posing as free speech champions

Missouri Attorneys General are prolific censors posing as free speech champions
Missouri had an embarrassing trip to the U.S. Supreme Court last month, and things have gone downhill from there.
Murthy v. Missouri (formerly Missouri v. Biden), was filed in 2022 by our then-Attorney General Eric Schmitt and his Louisiana counterpart. They sued a slew of federal government agencies alleging that the agencies’ discussions with social media platforms about content moderation violated the First Amendment.
The case is an attempt to avenge those who believe that efforts by private companies and the federal government to diminish election and vaccine misinformation, hate speech, calls to violence and foreign influence amount to a conspiracy to discriminate against conservatives.
It’s a special kind of embarrassment for Missouri for multiple reasons.
The first is that Missouri and Louisiana put a bunch of lies in the record that their hand-picked Texas judge accepted, but these lies were exposed by the time the case got to the U.S. Supreme Court, making us look like clowns to even the conservative justices.
Worse, the mess of a factual record makes the case a terrible vehicle for clarifying the very important question of when government speech aimed at influencing citizens’ speech, known as “jawboning,” crosses a line into government coercion that violates the First Amendment.
The second is that Missouri Attorneys General Schmitt and his successor, Andrew Bailey, have been ridiculed by legal experts across the political spectrum for their hypocrisy on free speech, given their anti-speech actions outside of this case as well as their broader abuse of the legal process to fight culture wars.
The third is that this dangerous effort to limit free speech in order to foster disinformation has been quite effective.
Social media companies have economic and societal interests in not having misinformation and hate speech infect their platforms.
It’s not good for business to have a platform devolve into a swamp where advertisers see their content next to neo-Nazi propaganda. Nor for a platform to become known for perpetuating conspiracy theories. Or promoting outbreak-causing anti-vax content. Or fomenting violence.
This is why social media companies have trust and safety teams, terms of service agreements and content moderation policies that forbid or demote some speech that the First Amendment protects.
Sometimes, government officials alert social media companies when misinformation is flowing on a platform, as when foreign agents are impersonating Americans to spread election disinformation. Sometimes government officials loudly criticize companies for not dealing with misinformation or failing to adhere to their own policies. Other times, private companies consult government experts when they are trying to suss out what is misinformation and what isn’t, for example as they attempted to tamp down vaccine misinformation during the pandemic.
Bailey calls all this “a vast censorship enterprise.”
Missouri and Louisiana argued in Murthy v. Missouri that our federal government and social media companies talking to each other must stop. Bailey insists we need “a wall of separation between tech and state.”
But such a wall would actually be an unconstitutional restriction of speech. Social media companies have a right to speak to the government (or anyone else) and a right to control what speech appears on their platforms. The First Amendment doesn’t restrict these companies from limiting users’ speech because they are not state actors.
This is a problem for the effort to force companies to be more hospitable to disinformation and incitement. Missouri and Louisiana attempted to get around this by alleging that actions taken by the platforms were the result of government coercion. People who were there at the time, like former head of trust and safety at Twitter Yoel Roth, say that’s not what happened.
If the government was threatening companies into censoring speech, that would indeed be a First Amendment violation. But after an extensive (and likely expensive) fishing expedition, the attorneys general couldn’t find evidence of coercion — so they made some up.
In one particularly flagrant lie to the court, Missouri took an angry email from a White House official on an unrelated topic and pretended it was a demand that Facebook censor content.
The oft-quoted email read: “Are you guys f**king serious? I want an answer on what happened here and I want it today.”
That may be an unprofessional email, but it wasn’t about anything having to do with content moderation. It was taken from an exchange complaining about users being blocked from following the president’s Instagram account, which Facebook said was due to a technical problem.
Numerous other inaccuracies in the record have been cataloged by TechDirt’s Mike Masnick, Tech Policy Press, and others.
At oral arguments, multiple Supreme Court justices called out the lies in the record and a majority seemed loath to accept the states’ invitation to upend existing precedent under which the government is perfectly free to use persuasion to affect speech, but not coercion.
Bailey is Missouri’s speech coercer-in-chief Many have noted that Bailey’s position in Murthy v. Missouri is incompatible with his position in two related cases concerning social media companies.
The Netchoice cases are challenges to laws passed by Texas and Florida that prohibit social media companies from moderating content in ways that discriminate on the basis of viewpoint. In other words, the laws would compel speech by requiring platforms to host content that they deem inappropriate or harmful.
This seems like a straightforward First Amendment violation, but Bailey filed an amicus brief arguing the laws should be upheld.
That is because Bailey is not seeking to protect against government intrusion on free speech.
On the one hand, he wants to bar the federal government from even criticizing speech he is in favor of. On the other, he wants state governments to be able to use the force of law to impose speech restrictions that require the platforming of right-wing misinformation and propaganda that the free market would otherwise diminish.
It’s a “heads-I-win, tails-you-lose” theory of free speech.
Worse, Bailey has repeatedly engaged in coercive behavior in his official capacity in order to suppress speech he doesn’t like.
Bailey joined a group of Republican attorneys general in sending a letter to Target threatening the company with legal consequences for selling LGBTQ-themed Pride gear. As First Amendment lawyer Ari Cohn wrote, Target’s products were “emphatically, and unquestionably protected by the First Amendment,” and the attorneys general’s letter implicitly condoned threats of violence against Target employees that had caused the company to remove or relocate the merchandise.
Bailey has also filed a lawsuit seeking to enjoin Planned Parenthood from referring minors out of state for legal abortions, which is also clearly protected by the First Amendment.
Asked to respond to criticism of the lawsuit from me and others, Bailey admitted that giving out information about obtaining an abortion out of state is not illegal.
Most recently, Bailey has taken a lighter to the First Amendment by using his governmental power to punish Media Matters for reporting things that he doesn’t want reported.
Media Matters, a left-leaning non-profit media watchdog, reported on the fact that since Elon Musk took over Twitter there has been an increase in hate speech that caused advertisements to appear next to neo-Nazi content. Musk doesn’t deny this happened, but nonetheless sued Media Matters for reporting that it did. A similar lawsuit Musk filed against another group has already been dismissed by a judge who didn’t mince words, “This case is about punishing the defendants for their speech.”
Bailey, in an olympic act of Musk sycophancy and “free speech for me, but not thee” legal innovation, has sought to add some governmental muscle to Musk’s anti-speech crusade by claiming that Media Matters has violated the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act, on the absurd theory that the organization duped donors into supporting the kind of work it has always done.
Bailey, his predecessor and the big guys whose favor they are seeking are on the wrong side of the First Amendment. They will ultimately be told this by the courts.
But they are succeeding at chilling speech and imperiling our democracy in the meantime.
Media Matters and Planned Parenthood will defend themselves and eventually prevail, after having precious dollars, time and energy stolen from their speech-dependent missions by frivolous litigation.
For Target, Google and others, it may be simpler to cave to the pressure and self-censor.
Murthy v. Missouri has already resulted in serious damage. Despite the stays of the lower court injunctions, the federal government and independent researchers largely stopped communicating with social media companies, ceasing efforts to combat the viral spread of disinformation. It was only after Missouri and Louisiana’s embarrassing showing at oral arguments that the FBI resumed alerting social media companies to foreign influence campaigns.
This is a real problem in an era of anti-vax fueled measles outbreaks, death threats against blameless election workers and foreign misinformation campaigns aimed at influencing our upcoming election.
Facts are vital to a functioning democracy. Bailey’s speech authoritarianism is an attempt to drown them out.

2024.04.29 06:48 kunzinator Rily: A TL:DR deeper dive on acquisitions, investments and the future.

TL:DR You have been warned. This is my dive into the assets and investments of B. Riley Financial and my take on them. I think this provides a great deal of information and insight into the more intimate details of the companies involved than what may show on the surface. I am definitely bullish on the RILY ticker and here is the culmination of many hours of research that I have done that support my view as I focus on the long term outlook as a whole and the possibilities that solidify this as long term investment.
I have spent a great deal of time digging into the details of the individual investments and acquisitions BR has made and trying to gauge future performance. The trickiest part involves primarily the Bluestar Alliance brands, which are mostly privately held companies. This leaves me without any publicly available inside financial information. I pulled the free monthly retailer sales analytics using gripsintelligence for the ones I was able to. I was unsure on the accuracy of the data and it just seemed to clutter things so I left it out.
An Index for navigation was requested and here it be.
[AxA] Boring companies section
[Ax1] The Arena Group (AREN)
[Ax2] Targus
[Ax3] Bluestar Alliance Brands 1 (Catherine Malandrino, English Laundry, Joan Vass, Kensie Girl, Limited Too, Nanette Lepore)
[Ax4] Bluestar Alliance Brands 2 (Hurley, Justice, Scotch & Soda)
[Ax5] bebe stores, Inc. (BEBE)
[Ax6] Communications (United Online, magicJack, Marconi Wireless, Credo Mobile, Lingo Management)
[BxB] Less boring companies section
[Bx1] Franchise Group, Inc. (FRG)
[Bx2] Alta Equipment Group (ALTG)
[Bx3] Synchronoss Technologies, Inc (SNCR)
[Bx4] Babcock and Wilcox Enterprises Inc. (BW)
[Bx5] Nogin Inc. (NOGNQ)
[AxA] Let us start with the less than desirable assets and get that out of the way.
I spent less time on these than I did on the ones I found to be future positive. Staring at a turd and tearing it apart is not going to make it any less a piece of shit. Many of these really are not even necessarily bad they just are not going to cause any excitement or major increases in income or increased value. Feel free to skim and or skip this section and head straight to the meat and potatoes if you would like.

[Ax1] The Arena Group (AREN)
Riley owns approximately 25% and has two board seats from when they worked with them to join the NYSE in Jan. of 2022.
At this point they are pretty much a wash and not much to look at. They lost their license to Sports Illustrated in Jan. of 2024 after failing to make their payment. Stock is in the dumpster here but, that may leave it as a possible upside as it has most likely already hit rock bottom.

[Ax2] Targus
Acquired for approximately $250m in October 2022.
They sell cheap laptop bags and such at Walmart. It is not exciting and no possible catalyst imaginable could cause revenue on this to skyrocket. That being said they have been doing that for as many years as I can remember and they still exist so they make enough to stay in business.

[Ax3] Bluestar Alliance Brands (part one)
Majority ownership of assets and IP’s to six brands in partnership with Bluestar Alliance in October 2019. Catherine Malandrino, English Laundry, Joan Vass, Kensie Girl, Limited Too and Nanette Lepore.
Failed brick and mortar retail, again nothing exciting. These brands were either migrated to or revived and converted to ecommerce shops. Ecommerce is cheap with minimal overhead and provides a small steady flow of income. Brand recognition and nostalgia is a nice helper in this area.

[Ax4] Bluestar Alliance Brands (part two)
Minority equity investment in Hurley in Nov. 2019, Justice in 2020 and Scotch & Soda in 2023.
Same story as the previous Bluestar brands, minimal overhead and a steady small stream of revenue. Bluestar does seem to be pushing a bit harder with marketing on the Hurley and Scotch & Soda brands versus the others. Hurley will be partnering with Mamiye Brothers for a spring 2025 release. Olympic gold medalist Carissa Moore will work with Mamiye on designing and consulting.
Scotch & Soda announce Joe Jonas as a brand ambassador. Jonas will be leading the creation of a collection to be released Fall 2024 and will be serving as the face of the brand. The brand also focuses on being environmentally friendly and creating a positive impact which is a great draw.
[Ax5] bebe stores, inc. (BEBE)
Acquired approximately 40% stake in Jan. 2018 and purchased again at $5 a share in Sep. 2023 to put total ownership at around 76%. Currently trending around $3 a share on OTC market. Riley has two board seats.
Ecommerce retail conversion again. Bebe also owns joint venture interests in the Brookstone brand and Buddy’s Home Furnishings Rent-to-Own stores. Bebe showed a small growth in sales from 2022 to 2023 but posted a net loss for the year. On the positive in January bebe announced a partnership with Grammy winner Ciara as creative director on a collection slated for fall of 2024.

[Ax6] Communications
All owned 100% by Riley. United Online, magicJack, Marconi Wireless, Credo Mobile, Lingo Management.
These are all profitable enterprises, most are on the downswing but will easily put out positive returns on investment. Lingo is the only one that is predicted to show increasing revenue.

[BxB] Finally, we get to move on to the good stuff. These are not only the bigger side of the investments, they are also the ones that show excellent growth potential.

[Bx1] Franchise Group, Inc. (FRG)
Acquired significant stake in July, 2018 and completed the buyout of the company for a total investment of approximately $2.9 billion in August, 2023. FRG has traded in a yearly range of $22 - $38 and is currently sitting at a solid $30.
I am going to just do a quick glance at this one involving FRG’s 3 major assets. There has been a fair amount of debate and controversy surrounding the accusations that Riley overpaid on this and of course the entire Brian Kahn storyline. If it were not for all that this probably would have gone in the top section as nothing exciting but, I think the consistent trashing of the purchase and the perception of it as a bad investment versus the reality of the obvious value made me shift it to the high side of things. The top 3 assets of FRG alone highlight the profitable business model of the company and show a combined conservative estimate of $2.6 billion. That alone points to the price at which FRG was purchased was definitely within reason. Looking at the return on investment on FRG’s largest investments not only proves the reasonable value of the company’s assets but also shows the value in the company itself.
Sylvan Learning Centers
Acquired by FRG in 2021 for $81 million. The sale of Sylvan to Unleashed Brands was announced Feb. 20, 2024 with the sale expected to be finalized July 30, 2024. Although the actual amount of the sale has not been released, reliable estimates put the sale price in a range of $165 - $185 million, over twice the initial investment.
Vitamin Shoppe
Purchased by FRG in Dec. 2019 from Vintage Capital for approximately $208 million. Approximate yearly cashflow is over $100 million and is growing yearly. Conservative estimates put the valuation at a ballpark of $1 billion, over four times the initial investment.
Pet Supplies Plus
Acquired by FRG Jan. 2021 from affiliates of Sentinel Capital for approximately $700 million.
This company has shown an amazing growth of 65% in the first two years since the acquisition and shows no signs of a downward trend. Conservative estimates put the current valuation at $1.4 billion, twice the initial investment.

[Bx2] Alta Equipment Group (ALTG)
Riley sponsored the SPAC for Alta in Feb. 2020 and owns approximately 12% and a single board seat. ALTG has traded in a yearly range of $8 - $18 and is around $11.50, which is up over 10% since it’s offering. Alta Equipment Group has confirmed that its next quarterly earnings report will be published on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024.
Alta is the leading provider of industrial forklifts and heavy construction equipment in the Midwest. The company sells, rents and services both new and used equipment. They have over 80 total locations and over 3000 employees including more than 1300 certified service technicians.
Alta has shown great growth year over year for 2023 with revenue up 21.7% and adjusted EBITDA up 21.1%. I found a lot of insight into the 2024 outlook for Alta from transcripts of their fourth quarter 2023 earnings call transcript and I below I summarize what I found to be the highlights. More than one board member mentions the stock to be undervalued and reference possible buy backs. I agree with their assessment of the stock being undervalued and have provided the quotes to those statements.
Fourth quarter revenues year over year showed across the board increases with construction up 12.9% year, material handling was up 19.4%, new and used equipment sales increases by 25.5% and parts and service revenue showed a 17.7% increase to just over $1 billion. The increased $205 million dollars of additional equipment put into the field in 2023 brings with it an expectation of an approximate annual revenue of $.50 for every dollar in high margin product support. Non-residential construction industry forecasts predict a slight increase in the upcoming year and Department of Transportation budgets are strong hinting at a very busy spring season. Direct quotes regarding buy backs and share price below.
“So in summary, we've grown this metric 4x in four years with minimal dilution along the way, yet we continue to see our stock price to not be reflective of this progress. We are cognizant of this disconnect to what we believe to be fair value for our equity. And as we head into 2024, this disconnection may inform our capital allocation decisioning as we balance potential stock buybacks versus what is presented to us via the M&A pipeline.”
“the stock is depressed relative to what we think is fair value, we wouldn't hesitate to dip into the buyback program that's here and in place.”

[Bx3] Synchronoss Technologies, Inc (SNCR)
Riley currently owns 15% and a single board seat. In March 2023 Riley made a takeover offer at a 44% premium that was not accepted. SNCR has traded in a yearly range of $2.50 - $14 and is currently sitting around $6.50. Synchronoss has announced its first quarter earnings call date for May 7th 2024.
I think the takeover offer that was made last year by Riley at over a 40% premium says a lot about the value they see in this company, sadly the offer was not accepted. My research has revealed the wisdom behind said offer, and I see a huge upside to this one. At a glance SNCR really doesn’t stick out and share prices have been trending pretty well flat in the time since that offer. Time for a deeper look.
Synchronoss Technologies provides the backend powering the personal cloud services for a multitude of large tier 1 companies including Verizon, AT&T, British Telecom, Tracfone, Assurant, and SoftBank. Those are some big names that I think we can all agree are not going away any time soon. Once again, I found the fourth quarter earnings call transcripts to be very revealing for the forward outlook.
In 2023 Synchronoss went through major restructuring with a strategic shift pivoting their sole focus into their role as a dedicated global cloud solutions provider. Directing the company focus into the high-margin personal cloud services the company led to the sale of the Messaging and NetworkX businesses to Lumine Group Inc. for approximately $41.8 million. In 2023 the company had a positive net cash flow of $2.7 million and since the Lumin deal they have further refined costs in cloud operations for a $15 million reduction for the year 2024. Along with exercising an extension of their partnership with AT&T they have also launched SoftBank’s Anshin Data Box powered by Synchronoss Personal Cloud. The company currently has over 75% of their total revenue locked down in contracts with terms of four years or more.
Following up this move to a cloud only focus Synchronoss revealed a new AI powered version of their platform at the Mobile World Congress in Feb. 2024. Highlights include a streamlined onboarding process, enhanced photo editing tools, a BackTrack feature for reverting and restoring files, and an Advance Highlight’s feature to identify and present interesting photos to the user from their collection. Many of these features are available for users who purchase an “Enhanced Plan”. Many of us who are more tech-savvy already have our preferred cloud storage and photo editing preferences and will not find any of this all that interesting, which is fine as we are not the intended users. This service has a huge userbase potential with their integration with big telecom providers that they are bound to attract the attention of a large number of non-power user types who it is meant to appeal to.

[Bx4] Babcock and Wilcox Enterprises Inc. (BW)
Riley owns approximately 31% of the company and has a single board set. BW shares have traded in a year range of $.75 - $6.64 and currently sit at $1.04. B&W’s 2024 first quarter earnings will be published on May 9, 2024.
Babcock & Wilcox is an energy solutions provider of equipment solutions and services in worldwide energy and industrial sectors. They have taken a major hit recently primarily involving short term cash flow issues. The leading cause of these issues involves operating losses involved with B&W Solar which was acquired in 2021 which I will attempt to summarize.
In 2022 the company discovered that Solar had loss generating contracts due to construction activity that was “not adequately disclosed in the sales agreement” and insurance claims have been submitted. During the years 2022 and 2023 additional Solar contracts have turned into losses. The company has discontinued operations of the Solar division and is looking to divest itself of the entity entirely.
My overall assessment is that of a positive outlook for the future of the company. They have been hit hard with the Solar ordeal but, they have discontinued operations and are working to come back from the hit they have taken. On the positive outlook is their backlog of expected revenue shown in the 2023 10K filing which totaled $530.5 million and of that $434.9 million was expected as revenue for the year 2024. As long as the company can keep things running and get through this rough stretch, I see a rise from the ashes as they free themselves from the anchor that has been B&W Solar and a steady rise up.

[Bx5] Nogin Inc. (NOGNQ)
Acquired by Riley through a stalking horse bid and Debtor in Possession providing $24.7 million of new financing when Nogin filed Chapter 11 in December of 2023 and was confirmed in April 2023. Nogin is currently traded OTC as NOGNQ at a yearly range of $.01 - $2.09 and currently priced at $.29.
Nogin, a Commerce as a Service provider, has primarily blamed its’ bankruptcy on business agreements involving purchasing the inventory of retail partners. Coincidentally, the biggest one of these happens to be Justice which may ring a bell. Riley has a minor investment in this brand along with Bluestar Alliance.
As of December, the company has initiated a strategic restructuring whilst continuing operations which is a continuation of what they already were working on earlier in 2023. CEO Jonathan Huberman stated during the 2023 second quarter earnings call “The largest decline was with the business where we sell products.” “As previously mentioned, this line of business has been unprofitable for us, and we are in the process of winding it down, which hopefully will be accomplished before the end of this year.” In October 2023 Nogin announced the finalization of agreements the completed the transition out of product sales after the end of the last quarter of 2023. In 2023 the company secured more than $27 million in bookings and added over a dozen new accounts.
What all this shows me is that Nogin had already identified their weaknesses and although, it was too late, they were already working at turning things around cutting out the underlying problems throughout 2023. They were unable to do so in time and fell into Chapter 11. Riley was able to swoop in and acquire the company at its’ low point as a tremendous value buy. The restructuring plan was already in place and the unprofitable portion of the business has already been cut out. Riley is now sitting at on a brand that is ready to turn things around with a revamped business model that should not have any problem showing profitability and increased value in the future. As a bonus Riley will be able to utilize Nogin to support the retail businesses they own or have equity in that were not already on Nogin’s platform. This seems to me like a nice synergy and a way to cut costs and possible bring in increased profitability to their retail sector holdings.

That’s it, that is all I have for you. Congratulations to anyone who managed to get through this entire novel.
If you skipped and skimmed I don’t blame you as I think I have completed a document that defines TL:DR. This is the culmination of all my research that serves to cement my bullish outlook on the future of B. Riley Financial. There are other parts of Riley’s business of which I did not touch because there are either better analysis already out there or simply because I am not smart enough to say anything useful about them. I am no expert in any of this and I do not have a business degree (or any degree). I am just throwing out my layman’s view of the basic businesses that Riley possesses and my thoughts on them. If it isn’t obvious, nothing in this entire monolith of words is anything resembling financial advice. I didn't really go through and put together a valuation of the company as a Cashflow Hunter article already did a wonderful job doing so and came to a conservative conclusion of $1.69 billion and $52.50 per share. He also details the valuation on the value of Great American Group that Riley has been eyeballing for a sale and its $350 million valuation.

2024.04.29 04:43 oripash Getting An Exploration Ship Right - An Advanced Method Guide & Request For Comments

Getting An Exploration Ship Right - An Advanced Method Guide & Request For Comments
I'm a (relatively) newish starter to Elite - been playing for a few months, got access to most of the ships, worked out how to get my hands on most of the things I want, and working out on refining and engineering a good explorer build. This is meant to help guide others, particularly the hardcore min-maxers and cutthroat engineers - heading the same way - and also my way of asking "What have I missed?"
Some design basics - There's no such thing as a best ship. There are a lot of things one can neglect to min-max a single stat (Jump Range! Yaaay!), only to realise, 2 days later, you might not care about dividing 500LY into blocks of 80, when you can be dividing them into blocks of 74, but wait 8 seconds less for your Friendship Drive to charge each time, not need to spend a full 30 seconds turning your ship around every time you overshoot, cursing at the sluggish controls the whole time, or that simply not needing to scoop at all on trips under 400LY is better than carrying a big scoop and the power budget to support it.
As you start understanding cause and effect, you start making small compromises here, to eliminate nasty kinks there.
We start off with asking what the role of an explorer ship is. This is a trick question.
There's no such thing as "A good explorer ship" because Explorer isn't a role. It's two roles. There's an intra-bubble explorer ship, and there's an extra-bubble explorer ship. Different beasts.
An intra-bubble ship doesn't need to solve for traversing 7000LY away from civilization, or dealing with a blown-up SRV when you're all the way out there.
This rundown will look at three ships used as a base - The Conda, AspX and Krait Phantom (I may update this post a little later with the DBX as well), and - more important than the answers I arrived at - show method to how I sculpted the builds out of them, usefully determined which corners to cut and which not - and come up with those specific builds. Because engineering requires materials and grind, This is best done as a theoretical paper excercise first, using https://edsy.org/, or you can do same using https://coriolis.io/, before committing to a path in-game.
The unsung hero of the methodology is Naming. Some people use the ability to rename an in-game object to rename their thing to "Goblygook of Phalic Doom". Smarter people understand it's a tool engineers use to condense, sort and compare more data points to allow human brains to make better, more informed decisions.
I first, had a long hard think about what was important for my explorer ships - I probably missed some things, but here goes:
  • The Role of the ship, the Ship Model Name
  • Travel Performance - Jump Range, Friendship Drive Charge Time, Unladen Range, Scoop Category
  • Handling Performance - 360 Pitch Time, Boost Frequency, Max & Boost Speed Summed
  • Misc Performance - SRV Count, Armor & Shield Summed, Cargo & Fuel Tonnage Summed
I left out weapons, mining equipment, and thermal management, because (until I find I cut a conrner that has very bad consequences), I decided not to care about them too much for now. A big part of the discipline is defining what goes in the 'noise' bucket.
And once I worked this out, I made a naming standard that fits into 22 characters to describe a ship:
https://preview.redd.it/vryi6j0ilbxc1.png?width=2710&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f6d290eec37441980657ab1fa5b7df63e4d701e
Stay with me. I know those names on the left look inhumanly horrible on first look, but - once clarified - it's incredibly useful, and relevant to the comparison this writeup attempts to be the methodology for.
Breakdown: IAX68=56-281799_6248
means: The first letter - I - captures intent. Here, an Inter-bubble explorer. If that first letter was X, it would have meant the build is meant to be an Extra-bubble explorer.
AX - 2-letter code saying what ship it uses. Asp Explorer, in this case. Also implying the size of landing pad it needs. AN would be Anaconda, KP is the Krait Phantom, DB would be a DBX.
68 is the unladen (with fuel, without cargo) jump range divided by 10 and rounded (so as to fit the important information into 2 characters). NOT the Maximal, because the maximal is a useless number. Maximal is what you would go if you had empty fuel tanks and a French Chip Drive that runs on unicorn fairy dust. The max on these builds hovers in the 70-82 range (both conda and aspX can break the 80 if you try hard enough). But to actually be making >80LY jumps, you need to downgrade your core fuel tank to 8-16T, and be only setting out with that little fuel (because, you know, actual fuel has mass in the game) - and no more - to accommodate that first and final olympic 80LY jump. The ships we want need to comfortably eat the common distances found inside the bubble (200LYx200LYx400LY), meaning carry fuel for multiple jumps, and for the X ships - way, way more. End segway. We care about unladen jump range, not max.
A generic note about Separators - I use them to break up the ugly alphanumeric ship name string into parts so my brain can process each part. It's impossible to make sense of a long number without them. They also carry information. = (equals) means great. - (dash) means good. _(underscore) means meh. .(dot) means bad.
The first separator = means it's the pre-engineered Tier5 FSD with an 80% charge reduction, which takes 2 seconds to boot. The conda has a _ there, as it rocks a Tier6 FSD and needs the 10 second default boot.
56 is the Unladen Range divided by ten and rounded. How far you jump before it's time to land or scoop. Assumes zero cargo, but max fuel.
The second separator - is a coarse scoop category. The asp has a Tier-6 scoop so it's a -. The conda rocks a Tier-7, which in my books is a =. A Small DBX with its Tier4 scoop would be a _.
Now we're into Handling performance.
28 is the Pitch on the asp. 2.8 seconds (which is very, very good). with 4 pips in engines, crew and experimental Drag Drives on the thrusters. It's also the number that makes you consider dropping some tonnage on better thrusters. You might also noticed I screwed around with the Conda to give me a solid 4.4 seconds (at the expense of a few LY range), which is, more or less, as good as large explorer-suitable (read: not the vette) ships go.
17 is the frequency with which you can use the boost. You usually need to use it twice or more to leave mass-locked areas, so you need to endure this countdown many, many times.
99 is the sum of regular and boost speed, divided by 10 and rounded. A general measure of how fast you are when you're up close and personal, flying that last mile towards planetary coordinates or whatever else, flying away from whatever is mass locking you, or dodging away from your friendly neighbourhood ganker.
The third separator _ is the depth of your SRV magazine. _ is 1, - is 2, = is 4. This Asp carries just 1, because they're easy to restock in the bubble when you can easily jump 60-70LY.
62 is Shield+Armor divided by 10, rounded. Simply put how much punishment you can tank in one volley too short to meaningfully manage a smart response to, before you blow up or jump out of a hairy situation. It's your total hero to zero healthbar. Part of the reason I think about it this way here is these ships have the absolutely pissiest shield that still doesn't leave you shieldless, so moving pips to SYS - while totally what you'd do - won't help things with high DPH driving all the way through what you put in their way. When this number goes over one thousand, to save on characters, I put an M (roman numeral for thousands) and the hundreds, ignoring tens and ones (so 1541 would be M5, which is all the info that really matters here).
Finally, 48 is your total fuel and cargo tonnage, including the core fuel tank. I divided them to have one of the smallest of the slots devoted to cargo, the rest to fuel towards roughly a 600Ly range, mindful of too much fuel reducing jump range. I also did two versions of the conda - one with shorter jump range but 2000LY fuel to have less frequent scoop stops, and one for inter-bubble work with cargo room instead. The Krait didn't give me much fiedelity - two slots assigned to this use, one 32T fuel, one 32T cargo, so I ended up with a 900LY range. I guess I can stick a smaller fuel tank in there if I really wanted to, and drive the jump range up a tiny bit. I don't really want to.

So that's the naming (but really, capturing and condensing what matters into a short list a human brain can easily absorb and compare) system. With it I cobbled together several builds:
IAX68=56-281799_6248 (AspX)
IKP66=91-362499_5896 (Krait)
XAN71_59=441368-M5288 (Anaconda, Short Haul)
XAN56_209=441368-M5288 (Anaconda, Long Haul)
IDB-71=60-352689_4744 (DBX)
The actual methodology:
In terms of what guided most of the engineering choices -
  1. First, I put the things I wanted on the ships, and took the things I don't want (weapons, mining gear) off. I did include (and I fully expect this list to evolve and morph over time):
    1. An advanced landing computer (I do other irl tasks while it lands me, and it saves me occasional mail slot woes)
    2. A DSS (detailed surface scanner)
    3. The smallest possible shield
    4. The smallest possible AFMU
    5. Point defense
    6. The smallest possible wake scanner
    7. An enhanced xeno scanner
    8. 1 SRV on the I ships, 2 on the X
    9. The biggest possible scoop
    10. The biggest possible guardian FSD booster
    11. More than zero cargo for those guardian artefacts or whatever else.
  2. I used engineering and experimental effects to strip everything possible down for jump range, (even if just temporarily for some of the things, before I go and undo that).
  3. I don't really care what the Power Distributor has for weapons, and I only half-care about shields, but since I'm trying to trim it to the bone, I do need it to be able to boost. Each ship model has a minimum hard-coded draw rate it needs to power the booster (13MJ for the DBX and AspX, 14MJ for the Krait, 27MJ for the Conda), and the PD needs to be the smallest thing imagineable that still supplies that minimum to the engines , with engineering decisions made to first meet that number (while weighing as little as possible), and then things like charge rate or shields.
  4. Thrusters. At this point, I was looking at them in their lightest, least performing variants. Because how the ship handles massively matters to my overall enjoyment of the game (despite not needing to do things like dogfighting in exploration ships), I put the minimum amount of extra mass into engineering decisions to get the maximum increase to pitch performane (and also to the frequency with which I can use the booster). So yeah. I know I don't strictly need 20Ton 5A thrusters, but I very much want them. 6A on the other hand... didn't add enough oomph to justify the weight.
  5. With the PD power draw determined, it's time to pick the smallest possible power plant that would deliver on the required power budget. There are two paths here - pick one that can drive everything, or... pick one that can drive everything with stuff that doesn't matter most of the time disabled (SRV hangar, Xeno scanner, AFMU, Wake Scanner). I've tentatively set foot on the latter, but if it ends up too painful, I'll sacrifice a bit of jump range to go to the next engineered A-tier power plant.
And thus I got to the above builds.
When I go and build my fighters, miners or cargo hauling cutter running 50mil bertrandine and gold missions from Babbage to Don's Inheritance, I go through the same overall process -
  1. Understand the role of what I am designing.
  2. Understand what matters to this role, and what is noise.
  3. Condense it into a naming scheme (each role will require a different naming scheme, and every CMDR here doing something similar will have their ideas about how to do that), which, ideally, contains all of those bits of information that matter, but eliminates those that don't.
  4. Make a bunch of builds using the most suitable ships on edgy.org.
  5. Look at the shortlist of best 3-5, compare, and understand what compromises each one entails.
  6. Pick thy poison.
That's how I've gone about it. And perhaps this can help others also trying to work out this path.
Hope you found this helpful - and I even more hope that you can see and are willing to share ways to make it less terrible :)
Cheers!

2024.04.29 01:22 Responsible_Tea7466 My GTO Episode List

I conceptualized an episode list on how I'd think a GTO anime adaptation could fully adapt the manga because the actual anime cut out a ton of content from the manga and didn't adapt its second half.

Season 1 - The Legend Begins:
Ep 1: Enter Eikichi Onizuka -- (Chapter 1 = 58 Total Pages)
Ep 2: First Day of The Job -- (Ch 2 - First 4/5 of Ch 3 = 62 Pages)
Ep 3: The Homewrecker -- (Last 1/5 of Ch 3 - Ch 6 = 65 Pages)
Ep 4: Enter Uchiyamada -- (Ch 7 - First 7/10 of Ch 9 = 52 Pages)

Notes:
I personally preferred how the anime restructured and paced the beginning of the manga - at least before the National Scholastic Achievement Test - even if a ton of good scenes were cut. I'd prefer if a new anime adaptation kept Onizuka being photoshopped into lewd pictures being an entire episode similar to the original anime, rather than resolving the conflict in a single chapter. Otherwise, here're some variations on the episodes in beginning for a more manga accurate adaptation:
Ep 2: First Day of The Job -- (Ch 2 - First 1/3 of Ch 3 = 50 Pages)
Ep 3: First Lesson -- (Last 2/3 of Ch 3 - Ch 4 = 37 Pages)
Ep 4: The Homewrecker -- (Ch 5 - Ch 6 = 40 Pages)
Ep 7: Welcome to Holy Forest Academy -- (Ch 12 - Ch 14 = 59 Pages)
Ep 8: Class 3-4 -- (Ch 15 - First 4/5 of Ch 17 = 52 Pages)
The only chapter to be cut is Chapter 60: A Day in a life of Officer Saejima Part 1. I enjoy the chapter, but the pacing is halted to focus on a character that has no presence in the arc. Maybe the anime can make the chapter feel less like a pitstop - I'd personally integrate the chapter like this: it'll be a conversation between Onizuka and Saejima rather than the whole chapter being from Onizuka's POV; Onizuka mainly talks with him about the whole situation dealing with Urumi while Saejima occasionally provides unhelpful advice as the chapter plays out, and Onizuka is there because he's hiding from the bikers that Urumi pissed off in the previous chapter and Saejima's place happened to be the closest by. If it were to be adapted:
Ep 23: Dining & Dashing -- (Second 1/2 of Ch 58 - Ch 60 = 48 Pages)
Ep 24: Her Secret -- (Ch 61 - Ch 63 = 58 Pages)
The Urumi arc can also be moved into the next season if some arcs were stretched out by an extra episode or filler episodes are added into this season and removed from the next.

Season 2 - The Legendary GTO:
Ep 27: Natural Enemy -- (Ch 67 = 19 Pages)
Ep 28: The Witch Club -- (Ch 68 - Ch 69 = 38 Pages)
Ep 29: Playing Hooky -- (Ch 70 - Ch 71 = 39 Pages)
Ep 30: Love Letters -- (Ch 72 - Ch 73 = 39 Pages)
Ep 31: Filler -- An episode focusing on Class 3-4's shenanigans or something.
Ep 32: Wedding Bell Blues -- (Ch 74 = 23 Pages) - either stretch it out like the anime's version of this episode or do something new with the story.
Ep 33: Filler -- Maybe an episode focused on Onizuka and Saejima like the anime because Saejima makes infrequent apperances throughout the series, better to establish his character to those who aren't familiar SJG or see how he's doing.
Ep 34: Tomoko's Big Adventure Part 1 -- (Ch 92.1 - Ch 92.2 = 42 Pages)
Ep 35: Tomoko's Big Adventure Part 2 -- (Ch 93.3 - Ch 97.1 = 43 Pages)
Ep 36: Tomoko's Big Adventure Part 3 -- (Ch 97.1 - Ch 97.4 = 56 Pages)
Ep 37: The Lightness Of Being -- (Ch 75 - Ch 76 = 40 Pages)
Ep 38: Lost Money -- (Ch 77 - Ch 79 = 57 Pages)
Ep 39: Studies In High Finance -- (Ch 80 - Ch 82 = 57 Pages)
Ep 40: 8 Millon Yen Hunt -- (Ch 83 - First 2/3 of Ch 86 = 69 Pages)
Ep 41: Living On Luck -- (Last 1/3 of Ch 86 - First 1/3 of Ch 89 + Last 1/3 of Ch 89 = 60 Pages)
Ep 42: Departure -- (Ch 90 - Ch 92 = 59 Pages)
Ep 43: Metamorphosis -- (First 1/3 of Ch 88 + Second 1/3 of Ch 89 + Ch 93 = 31 Pages)
Ep 44: Self-Improvement -- (Ch 94 = 19 Pages)
Ep 45: Making it a "Go" in Okinawa -- (Ch 95 - Ch 96 = 41 Pages)
Ep 46: Okinawa Filler -- I was disappointed that the other characters didn't do much in Okinawa, even if they were never meant to be the focus. A flimsy idea I have is have Miyabi's friends trying to come up with a scheme like Miyabi but ultimately failing.
Ep 47: Great Treasure Okinawa -- (Ch 97 - Ch 98 = 39 Pages)
Ep 48: Underground Depths Of Okinawa -- (Ch 99 - Ch 100 = 39 Pages)
Ep 49: Secret Love In Okinawa -- (Ch 101 - Ch 102 = 44 Pages)
Ep 50: Deep Confessions In Okinawa -- (Ch 103 - Ch 105 = 59 Pages)
Ep 51: Great Teacher Fuyutsuki?! -- (Ch 106 = 22 Pages) - Added filler or creative liberties can be taken to stretch this episode out.
Ep 52: White Collar Blues -- (Ch 107 = 20 Pages) - Same case with the previous episode.

Notes:
An idea I have is a preview to the last episode on Miyabi soon returning to school and some allusion to Mayu appearing next season, just to end the season on a higher note.
I enjoyed the few filler episodes in the anime. They can be implemented into this season's beginning as there are generally lower stakes during that time, and not moving immediately onto the next arc can allow more time for the audience to settle in with the cast, especially since Urumi will be the last major characteantagonist introduced until Mayu (44 chapters after the end of her arc).
I don't see the Mr Sakurai plot line ever being adapted. If it had to be done, the anime'd likely cut out a ton of the grotesque stuff and combine his and Fuyutsuki's chapters together into one episode. Also, there isn't any more that can be done with one chapter that wouldn't be a repeat of the original anime's adaptation so combining those chapters is likely the best option.
Because the season is arguably stretched out, here's an alternate version of this list that includes Mayu's arc.
Ep 27: The Witch Club -- (Ch 67 - Ch 69 = 57 Pages)
Ep 28: Playing Hooky -- (Ch 70 - Ch 71 = 39 Pages)
Ep 29: Unheard Marriage -- (Ch 72 = 23 Pages)

Ep 32: Tomoko's Big Adventure Part 2 -- (Ch 97.1 - Ch 97.4 = 75 Pages)
Ep 33: The Lightness of Being -- (Ch 75 - First 1/2 of Ch 77 = 40 Pages)

Ep 37: A One in None Chance -- (Ch 86 - Ch 87 + Last 2/3 of Ch 88 - First 1/4 of Ch 89 + Last 1/3 of Ch 89 = 64 Pages)
Ep 38: The Mercedes Benz -- (Ch 90 - Ch 92 = 58 Pages)
Ep 39: Metamorphosis -- (First 1/3 of Ch 88 + Second 1/3 of Ch 89 + Ch 93 = 50 Pages)
Ep 40: Making it a "Go" in Okinawa -- (Ch 95 - Ch 96 = 41 Pages)
Ep 41: Great Treasure Okinawa -- (Ch 97 - Ch 98 = 39 Pages)

Ep 51: The Lesson Plan -- (Second 1/2 of Ch 122 - First 3/4 of Ch 124 = 50 Pages)

Notes:
Self-contained episodes with an extremely low page count will likely just be similar to the anime's version of those arcs or can possibly combine that arc with another.
If that were to be the case - with 3 - 6 more filler episodes - the Mayu arc can possibly be moved into next season which is something I'd personally prefer. But to fit the common 24 - 26 episode requirement and not make half of the season episodic/filler, Mayu's arc can be placed at the end of the season which is alright enough.
Once again, Saejima's chapter is cut. It can be implemented in:
Ep 45: Last Day in Okinawa -- (Ch 106 - Ch 108 = 64 Pages)
But, as before, the pacing would just be slowed down. Although, the idea I have in mind for that episode is an anthology - treating each chapter like its own mini episode. That way, the chapter can fit like the other chapters. A ton of dialogue would have to be cut though as there are two dialogue heavy chapters and one other chapter, and Saejima's chapter would likely get the most cuts as he isn't that crucial of a character to the story.

Season 3 - The Legend Rises:
Ep 53: Filler -- Another Onizuka & Saejima episode is possible as he, again, has a minor appearance in two major arcs later this season and SJG fan service. This can also be placed later on in the season after Mayu's Arc and before Urumi vs Miyabi arc. Half of this episode can be filled up by Saejima's chapter (Ch 108) if there can't be a plot that lasts 22 minutes.
Ep 54: Teshigawara's Return -- (Ch 109 - Ch 110 = 43 Pages)
Ep 55: The Delinquent -- (Ch 111 - Ch 113 = 62 Pages)
Ep 56: Grand Theft Onizuka -- (Ch 114 - Ch 115 = 41 Pages)
Ep 57: Into the Underground -- (Ch 116 - First 1/2 of Ch 118 = 48 Pages)

Ep 60: The Lesson Plan -- (Last 4/5 of Ch 123 - First 3/4 of Ch 124 = 37.5 Pages)
Ep 61: Filler -- Mayu planning his revenge against those who wronged him with Kikuchi.
Ep 62: Filler -- Class 3-4 shenanigans or continuation of Mayu's previous filler episode.
Ep 63: The Loneliest Heart in The World -- (Ch 125 - Ch 126 = 39 Pages)
Ep 64: Elopement -- (Ch 127 - Ch 128 = 38 Pages)

Notes:
A Shock To The System being a single chapter is because a ton of scenes can be added or expanded upon. If the chapter were to come after Ch 141, it'd be abrupt to suddenly skip onto and resolve another conflict within the episode - to me anyways - so somethings can be explained or fleshed out: where Onizuka and Yoshikawa was after saving Urumi, showing more of Urumi's Mother grieving, etc. It also helps that the chapter has a ton of dialogue so the episode wouldn't feel too stretched out.
The Teshigawara arc is extremely stretched out; it can be cut down by an episode.
Here's 2/3s of the season cut down into 13 episodes:
Ep 53: The Loneliest Heart in The World -- (Last 1/4 of Ch 124 - Ch 126 = 46 Pages)
Ep 54: Elopement -- (Ch 127 - Ch 128 = 38 Pages)
Ep 55: Memories That Sting -- (Ch 129 - Ch 130 = 37 Pages)
Ep 56: Crime & Punishment -- (Ch 131 - Ch 133 = 54 Pages)
Ep 57: Chaos -- (Ch 134 - First 1/3 of Ch 137 = 59.5 Pages)
Ep 58: Sayanora -- (Last 2/3 of Ch 137 - Ch 139 = 50.5 Pages)
Ep 59: In My Life -- (Ch 140 - Ch 142 = 49 Pages)
Ep 60: Born Anew -- (Ch 143 - Ch 144 = 35 Pages)
Ep 61: The Burden Of Friendship -- (Ch 145 - Ch 146 = 36 Pages)

Chapter Average per Episode: 2.46153846154 Chapters
Page Average per Episode: 46.2307692308
Notes:
A Shock To The System wasn't made into its own episode so this season can be 13 episodes - next season is when the second semester starts, so starting the manga's second half in the middle of the season would be, I feel, too jarring.
The Teshigawara arc was cut down by two episodes.

Season 4: The Legend Lives
Ep 79: Second Semester Begins -- (Ch 158 = 43 Pages)
Ep 80: In The Dumps -- (Ch 159 = 19 Pages)

Ep 84: Vengeance Of An Angel -- (Second 1/2 of Ch 166 - First 2/3 of Ch 168 = 50 Pages)
Ep 85: The Azusa Reason -- (Last 1/3 of Ch 168 - Ch 170 = 47 Pages)

Ep 88: Tales Of Summer Nights -- (Ch 176 - Ch 177 = 28 Pages)
Ep 89: Summer Festival -- (Ch 178 - Ch 179 = 36 Pages)
Ep 90: Filler -- Maybe an episode centering around Ms Daimon, Sho, and the angels; maybe some more wacky Class 3-4 shenanigans with the new kids. Anything to flesh out this part of the story.
Ep 91: The End Of Summer -- (Ch 180 - Ch 181 = 43 Pages)
Ep 92: Family Reunion -- (Ch 182 - First 1/2 of Ch 184 = 54 Pages)

Ep 99: Doing What I Can Do For You -- (Ch 198 - Ch 199 = 62 Pages)
Ep 100: Forever -- (Ch 200 = 36 Pages)

Page Average per Episode (Excluding Filler): 45.7619047619 Pages
Notes:
Since this season adapted the least number of chapters, I have some few ideas on stretching the episodes out:
The second episode of the season can have Onizuka looking for places to live, providing a greater pay off to him living in the decorated big heap of trash. Ryuji's frustration towards Onizuka in Ch 167 for conforming to the points system can be introduced here as well.
Saejima's Chapter can be an entire episode or fill up half of Episode 88: Tales Of Summer Nights:
Tales Of Summer Nights -- (Ch 175 - Ch 177 = 47 Pages)
or Anko's arc can be more fleshed out, acknowledging and building on continuity with what's introduced before like her possible family drama that never gets further explored outside of her first arc and Okinawa.
Here's an alternate list for the season's second half:
Hostage Situation -- (Ch 182 = 23 Pages)
Family Reunion -- (Ch 183 - Ch 184 = 46 Pages)
The Secret Of Class 3-4 -- (Second 1/2 of Ch 184 - Ch 186 = 68 Pages)
Friends -- (Ch 187 - Ch 188 = 65 Pages)
Heaven's Gates -- (Ch 189 - Ch 190 = 50 Pages)
When Angels Go Bad -- (Ch 191 - Ch 193 = 62 Pages)
Looking For Love Again Tonight -- (Ch 194 - Ch 195 = 44 Pages)
Grieving Time -- (Ch 196 - Ch 197 = 43 Pages)

2024.04.29 00:54 Aftel43 Not so dubious duo, part 17.

It is the day, where military force of Valerie here, finally goes into offensive. Jakan and I travel along with one of the heroes of the riven war, Kyrem, who is leading the cavalry archer battalion we are to be his eyes and ears of enemy movement. As we ride our horses, I wondered the source of Jakan happiness.
This time, it is different, this must have something to do with Jakan and one of the five heroes of riven war, Lankensy. They pressed their upper arms perpendicularly against each other, they chuckled to each other, then separated to get to their duties. I chose to not ask as it isn't important but, doesn't stop my curiosity.
We have reached our deployment position, I look at Kyrem, he nods to us. Commence reconnaissance, Jakan and I separate from the cavalry archer battalion to scout in peace. It took us a while to actually find undead formations within the area, but, even Jakan let out a coughing sigh from the sight of the numbers we are seeing.
'Winter's roar... If there is even one more formation like that... The cavalry battalions have a tough time... Something I should have expected but, mostly considered unlikely...' Jakan states mildly alarmed by the number of undead in the rectangular formation.
'Fyregeld would need to take part very early... Which is most likely going to be disadvantageous later?' Ask for a confirmation of what I suspect Jakan is thinking.
'Yes... Fyregeld most certainly will be needed in the fight...' Jakan replies still mildly astounded how large the formation is. We move on to continue scouting, but, this is bad news, I guessing both of us are suspecting that this formation's purpose is to alarm the town that they are going to be attacked very soon.
Unfortunately for us, there is a second formation that is just as large as the first one more to the south of south west of the town, while this one is to the south west of it. 'Great, just, bloody fantastic... I will have some choice words for the Valerian scouts, these are probably twice or even thrice the number of undead compared to what they reported...' Jakan says upset about the situation.
'And, these two are part of the three we are supposed to lure into attacking the cavalry... The Valerians are most certainly going to have a bad day...' Reply quietly to try to ease Jakan's mood. It does work...
'Right, let's go look for the third... Hopefully it won't be as big as this and the previous...' Jakan states calmly, remembering that we aren't supposed to take part in the fight against these, but, reports are almost certainly going to be ugly.
Third formation, behind the first formation we scouted is still big but, probably by a third smaller, still a risky fight but, not unwinnable. Jakan told me that best way to beat this one with the forces nearby, would be, that cavalry archers would jog past it while firing arrows into the formation from the rear and front, as the formation is fairly tight and there aren't enough shields.
The undead casualties would be high, the cavalry archers would only stay as long as to bait the enemy to charge them, which leaves them open to be charged by the Valerian cavalry battalion, under the command of Tyrelia, one of the heroes of riven war. It's going to be a nasty melee but, one that would be the most effective on completely destroying this formation.
Follow up maneuvers would be that the cavalry archers, once they are being pursued, will regroup to attack the large south western formation, while once the cavalry battalion has routed or utterly destroyed this small formation will attack the rear of the southern undead formation, to goad them to pursue them.
Once the cavalry archer battalion has begun the fall back, the cavalry battalion will follow. From there, it is following the plan. The plan discussed yesterday still can be done but, it is going to be a lot more uglier in terms of results than expected. We scouted little bit longer to make sure there aren't other formations nearby.
There is fourth, which we suspect to be a reserve formation for the assault, it is about as big as the third. There is a mistake with it's location however, that is good news for the cavalry archer battalion. They are too far away to assist the large south western formation. Jakan sighed from mild relief. 'Well, at least some kind of good news... Although, once the pursuit is initiated, they most likely will join the battle.' Jakan says to me.
'I agree, thankfully we aren't supposed to give battle assistance in these fights... We would both be sore from the exhaustion later today, or worse, grievously wounded.' Reply to Jakan, he nodded in agreement. Jakan then motioned to me with his head that, this is enough, time to report to battalions. Nodding in agreement we head back.We arrive as Kyrem and Tyrelia are talking with the squadron commanders. 'What are your reports?' Kyrem hails us as we approach.
'Relatively far away from the best news, unfortunately but, there is some good too.' Jakan states calmly knowing that what we have seen, is going bring up mixed feelings. Jakan debriefs all on scene, on what we have discovered.
Kyrem displayed some worry but, when we told about the secondary reserve formation's positional mistake. He began to think about the situation more intensily. Tyrelia also looked worried, she and the battalion under her command, have a work cut out for them...
All squadron commanders deemed the plan still doable but, they all agreed on the fact that, this is going to be a seriously tough skirmish. Now, they need to be quick, Tyrelia gave Jakan a flag pole and a flag for the second part of this operation. 'Anything you would like to say before we begin?' One of the cavalry squadron commanders ask from us.
'For life, for the people, for Valerie.' Jakan states in hardened tone, we must begin and see our parts done in this operation.
'For life, for the people, for Valerie. I agree.' Tyrelia say with high spirit.
'Time to do our duty, all of you ready?' Kyrem asks from all of us.'Yes, sir.' Jakan and I reply without hesitation nor fear. We departed to head towards the north west of the castle. Behind us, pace of the hooves of more than hundred horses began to jog. We will not see them for a while now.
As soon as we arrived to the area we should scout out for any possible formations that might try to take positions north west or west of the castle where the supposed surprise pitched battle is to happen. We begin scouting, for a while, all the way to the past mid day, we do not find any undead formations, they must have combined formations for the assault on the town.
Unfortunately for them, it was done way too early... And now, there is a massive gap in the area control, gap which armed forces of Valerie are now beginning to exploit. We don't know whether the cavalry battalions have made good on their promises at the moment but, unfortunately for the infantry battalions the gap is going to be closed soon.
And there will be a battle that is a hard one for the one Lankensy is leading. These undead formations we are seeing, two of them, are about same size and number as the reserve formations to the south and south west of the town. We will need to improvise, one of those reserve size formations would have been bad enough. As we were heading back.
We see smoke, quite thick and seems to be from the direction where Fyregeld was to be signaled to ignite a forest, which undead infantry would use to try catch up with the formation moving cavalry. Unfortunately for us, we do not know how much damage this has caused and, we, Lankensy and his infantry battalion have a big endeavor ahead of us.
Jakan is still staring at the formations, probably staring at the distance between them. 'We can take them.' Jakan states calmly, which baffled me so much so that I let out an audible what. 'We can take them, We will be outnumbered three to one but, I have a plan.' Jakan adds and shakes his two handed sword slightly.
'I don't think it is enough.' Reply to Jakan in unsure tone as, such numerical advantage is enough for every attacking force to destroy a defending force.
'We will improvise, I will tell you once we reach sir Lanksensy.' Jakan states confidently.
'Okay...' I say slightly shakily, unsure whether it is warrior heart of Jakan making him act stupidly, or soldier's mind that whatever is the adversity, we handle it together... We head to where we agreed to meet Lanksensy and the infantry battalion he is leading in this battle.
Jakan prepared the flag and the flag pole, attaches the flag on the pole, then began to wave it, as the undead formations came into an open ground. Both of soon heard roar from the sky, we looked to the direction and see Fyregeld diving to harass the rear of the second formation of undead behind us.
We continue riding our steeds to the rally point. We reach it in good time, Lankensy was waiting for us with Seirialia. 'Bad news, we will receive undead formation that outnumbers us three to one.' Jakan states immediately before dismounting, I follow him.Lankensy at first seemed quite eager to fight but, such odds sobered his expression. 'We can take them, Fyregeld is already harrassing the formation behind the first one from the rear, so there will be chaos which buys us time.' Jakan says, Lankensy frowns while Seirialia looked grim.
'Tell me you have a plan.' Lankensy says, sounding surprisingly content and a smirk appeared on his lips.
'Yes sir. I will use the runes on my blade to create walls to hide the true number of our forces and act as a small choke point for the infantry to hold, you divide your battalion to three detachments. The center will hold the choke point with all they have, while southern and northern detachments make sure we won't get flanked around the stone walls.
When they begin their attempt to flank, the south and north detachments will begin fighting advance to box in our opponents. Seirialia, your arcane mastery is required, take a high ground and, rain hell on the enemy masses that engage the infantry detachments.' Jakan explains the plan.
Jakan draws his plan on to the dirt with his mace as he speaks. The terrain we are at, most certainly favors us... From that high ground, to the north east, is a perfect place to begin. Lankensy motions the infantry commanders to approach. He briefs them on the plan Jakan has proposed.
'Jakan, this is going to get ugly, but, with this plan... The glory will be quite gorgeous.' Lankensy states as the infantry commanders nod that they will follow this plan.
'This will be an ugly battle but, we will win it. Volarie, I need you to provide me more arcane, if the battle does get bad, with your assistance I will break the ground beneath our foes, so they have to fight from a disadvantageous position.' Jakan says without a hint of worry in his voice.
'Would it be better that I would provide you the assistance Jakan?' Seirialia asks alarmed by proposal from Jakan to me.
'No, we need your skill in magic to disrupt undead and to make sure that they have will have difficult time on concentrating their forces to put pressure on any of the three infantry detachments. Volarie already knows how to do it, and we have done this couple times before.' Jakan replies in calm tone.
I do remember, they were small in scale but, with right amount of concentration, we can do even bigger one. I am still worried though... Seirialia has the better mastery of arcane, I do not have as much skill or energy as her and Jakan's own capacity for arcane is rather limited. The plan is good though...
'Alright, I am ready.' Say finally without hesitation, although, I have some in my heart...
'I will hold the center, Volarie, move with the northern detachment to the position, Jakan you do the same, but with the south. Seirialia, I think you should get into position.' Lankensy says calmly.
'Yes sir.' Jakan and I say.
'Alright, I will trust your judgment.' Seirialia says to Jakan.
'Lady, I will get it done.' Jakan states with serious tone and ready to do everything in his power to win this battle. She nods to Jakan trusting him and I to do our part.
Jakan used the runes on his blade to create the walls, while I went into the position. We began to wait, waiting, the most nerve wrecking part of his plan... Soon, undead were sighted and they immediately rush to engage the choke point, slightly dispersing to begin also go around the stone walls. North infantry detachment began to jog to close the flanks, I go with them.
The plan is so far working, undead began engaging all three points without concentrating to break out through one. Now, we wait again, I listen to the battle raging before me, every now and then look around to see if we are getting flanked. Then I saw big chunks of ice raining into the center of the open left side box, infantry have formed. Second reserve force has now entered the battle.
They also charged right in, this is the moment where Jakan and I, head to the rear of the undead, and break the ground they stand in. As we had practiced, I place my hand on Jakan's left shoulder and begin channeling my arcane energy into him, just as he began to grasp the earth with his hands and began casting an earth rupture spell.
I allowed Jakan to take the lead and just follow him. Spell is complete, and Jakan made a two handed fist, then brought it down onto the dirt in front of him. Like water that got hit by massive weight on it's surface earth ruptured upwards at the center of the box, flinging countless amount of undead into the air.
Soil and stone rained upon the mass of undead, causing further losses of undead infantry. We gaze upon what we caused, both of us spent in terms of arcane. 'It is not enough, the battle still favors them...' Jakan says angrily and looks like he wants to charge in.
'That is a suicide.' Say to him in serious tone. Jakan calms down and thinks.
'Now, we just have to fight hard... Fight your way through to the northern detachment, while I fight to the south. Kills as many as you can cause as much as chaos as possible, when you reach allies, tell them to begin pushing forward with all their might. Because this is it, either they or us, break first.' Jakan says clearly frustrated that it has come to this but, no other options.
We collide our swords and wish fortune to each other, we separated and begin skirmishing. After fighting a while, I reach Valerian infantry northern detachment. 'Push! Push! It is either us or them!' Shout as loud as possible. Their commander heard me, a moment of consideration flashes in his expression, it soon hardens into seriousness.
'Fight, fight, fight with all your might!' He roars and joins the battle. Northern detachment slowly, orderly, but, surely, began taking ground from the undead. I join the commander, who would have distrusted me but, here, in this moment, we are not enemies.
Soon, to the last skeleton, walking dead and fallen's end. The undead were slain, soldiers began collapsing from exhaustion. I hear horses running towards us, turning to look, it is Tyrelia's cavalry battalion, then I look opposite of me, spot Jakan on his knees and relying on his sword, looks more like he is just trying to catch his breath and relax. To my left, I see Lankensy at the center detachment, he also looks quite exhausted
.'Hail hero of the riven war... It is done...' Say with stamina that I still have as Tyrelia approaches us on her steed.
'By the light... How many have you slain?' Tyrelia says as she looks at the ground before the resting soldiers of northern detachment. I think a while...
'Twenty three...' Say still exhausted and look around, Seirialia has reached Lankensy, they embrace each other. Ground quaked a little as Fyregeld landed, he is completely fine, but, his expression tells of bewilderment.
'Fyregeld, we will need to screen for more undead that might head towards here. They need rest not another battle.' Tyrelia states looking at all of the Valerian soldiers who have taken part in this battle.
'I agree wholeheartedly lady Tyrelia. I would like to hear what happened here to have caused a battle of this scale.' Fyregeld says, still quite baffled by the amount of undead that has been slain.
After resting almost to the beginning of dusk. We begin moving back into the castle from the northern entrance. I join Jakan's company who is now feeling a lot better, still exhausted but, at least enough rested that we begin walking our steeds back into the castle. Seeing it better to not ruin the current atmosphere of victorious but, exhausted Valerian soldiers.
I have the intention on breaking the silence between Jakan and I but, then I heard somebody approaching us on a horse and some jogging. We turn to look, and they are Tyrelia, Lankensy and Seirialia. As Lankensy opened his mouth to say something, ground quaked a little and we were joined by Fyregeld.
'What are the reports of commanders Gonzil, Salgi and Tynzio?' Lankensy asks from Tyrelia.
'Only three out of twenty have suffered wounds, by the looks of your battalion, I estimate yours had it worse than them combined.' Tyrelia says in praising tone.
'We ended up having to fight two reserve formations of undead... Thanks to Jakan's plan... It probably would have ended up a whole lot worse.' Lankensy states in humble tone.
'Negative sir...' Jakan sighs out, unwilling to receive praise, not out of that it offends him. 'Real heroes of this battle are the soldiers marching behind us.' Jakan adds mildly worried he might have offended.
'True but, you do deserve some praise draconian... Thanks to your quick thinking, that probably would have turned out to be a victory as bad as defeat.' Lankensy says, mildly amused by Jakan behavior and smiles warmly.
'I would have charged into the center of the undead, if Volarie wouldn't have calmed me down...' Jakan replies keeping composure but, wanting to avoid praise. Curse you Jakan... Don't shove into the spot of light in a cave...
'I only told him, what I believed was on his mind, is a suicide.' Say the truth of the matter.
'Could you both, just stop avoiding our gratitude?' Tyrelia asks teasing us, probably figured out, why we are behaving in this manner.
'With all respect, lady Tyrelia... We are just trying to avoid taking too much praise. We fear that the soldiers wouldn't take it idly.' Jakan replies steadily.
'While I do understand reasoning, you shouldn't downplay your part in this, I believe the commanders would also make it clear to their men, that this was achieved with effort from everybody.' Fyregeld reasons, Jakan just exhales in begrudging manner, probably because what Fyregeld said, is true.
Even I can not find a way to weasel a way out from receiving gratitude from Valerians... 'Alright then...' Jakan replies in slightly defeated tone, declaring his intention to cease avoiding receiving gratitude.
'You are correct lord Fyregeld.' State in slightly defeated tone. Our intention is to maintain as high as possible morale among the Valerian soldiers, we can handle the influence of dark arcane in the air without issues, it is the effect on the soldiers we are most concerned about.
'How bad did it look? Lady Seirialia.' Jakan asks, it makes sense why he asked that. He only had the battle level awareness, while Seirialia had better awareness of the battle situation from the high ground.
'It looked quite bad, after your earth rupture, the battle still was in the favor of the undead, from my position, I could only do so little when I had cast spells that I could.' Seirialia replies smiles warmly, Jaka scoffs in tone telling of his discomfort, knowing that he was correct in his battle assessment in that moment.
'Can you explain the chain of events?' Fyregeld asks from me and Jakan. Jakan looked at me, asking that should we be truthful, I look at him in a manner saying yes. Jakan closes his eyes slowly and rolls his eyes. He explains what transpired in more detail. Tyrelia and Fyregeld listen carefully.
I am more eager to hear their angle on what happened...

2024.04.29 00:53 Aftel43 [FN] Not so dubious duo, part 17.

Wheelchair Ramps 101 - DIY down and dirty edition 2024
Thanks for deciding to read my post today. This is not the definitive or complete explanation of wheelchair ramp design. Before I start let's get the technical potentially legal stuff out of the way first.
Ramps that are indoors or in a fenced in area like a back yard (THE FENCED AREA MAY BE DIFFERENT IF IT IS ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC). Ramps not used by the public = Food delivery, mailperson, utility meter reader, Jahova's Witnesses, etc.
These Ramps do not need to Meer ADA requirements. But should still be functional and safe to use. You'd be surprised at what people do. But if it works, then it works.
Backyards that are fenced in and not accessible to the public MIGHT be excluded.
FOR ANY RAMP OR ACCESSIBLE FEATURE ADDED TO OITDOOR SPACES THAT THE PUBLIC CAN ACCESS WILL 100% NEED A TOWN OR CITY PERMIT. THIS IS WITHOUT EXCEPTION.
Here is where it gets real. If you decide to ignore this and say someone trips, slips pr otherwise gets injured by your accessibility fearure. YOU and only YOU are at fault. Even if it is 100% ADA compliant, the feature was not properly registered with the town or city so it can be noted when and where it is installed and on what property.
Next the town or city will fine you a set amount per day it was in place without a permit. For example a permit for my handcycle shed cost $100 that might seem unfair and costly. But if I had just built my shed without permit they could fine me $1,000 per day it was up from the time it was built.
Getting a permit and making things 100% or better than ADA complaint, yes it is easy to surpass what the ADA asks for. ADA is the bare minimum expected.
This doesn't mean someone trying to con you won't try and sue you. But, if you have things in order such as getting a permit. Making things at least ADA compliant will support your side in a legal issue.
Yup that is the borish stuff for the most part. Forget about it and life will likely get very annoying.
For those who are interested and want a live community to chillax in to talk about most anything really, listen to music and make requests for Fave songs or topics you would like to discuss.
I broadcast live typically in the cold months M-F from around when my pain allows me to get up varies 9am to after noon and I go until my sweetheart arrives home. About 5PM to 6PM I have been broadcasting live 16 years.
Quite literally I am just repeating here what I will talk about live also.
TikTok until the ban kicks in. Then it's back to Twitch. AbiliTV or AbiliTV Live. If you Google the name do not pay attention to the website I don't have one. And the owner of that sight well let's say I don't endorse him.
I am on YouTube, FB, IG,,Twitch, account still there but not used since it went to X (Twitter), Kick - although I don't like the vibe on Kick.
Of course I am here getting started here on Reddit in a more text based community. I am in the Wheelchair and Disabilities communities where I am learning about all sorts of amazing people.
OK, I always hate posting I am a live content creator. I hate it so much I have hardly any community live.
Ramps.
What makes a crappy, good, or excellent ramp?
For me it is the little details that really make the differences. I will use images to try and explain the bare basics.
1st image: Most people see this and think: My prayers have been answered.
No they have not. You will notice the direction the person is using the ramp. Manufacturers do this to play into your desperate need for a ramp solution. They want you imagining how easy there ramp is to use. So they stage images showing that. Much how homes are staged. To make it easier for people to fall victim to slick sales tricks.
What if the door were closed and rhe person was approaching the door? Look at the ramp. How does one say open s screen door or storm door that swings out? Most dwellings will have one.
Now imagine it's raining really hard and that nice metal surface isn't as grippy? And you have a bag or two of groceries on your lap. Now open the storm door and then before it closes as they are typically on a door closer of some design. As you fight the storm door, are annoyed by the driving rain, and fumbling for your keys.
Even on an ideally perfect day without snow or rain this ramp will work 100% against you. Also it isn't wide enough to allow you to move over out of the way ofcthe storm door. Meaning you need to back up and get the door perched against your wheelchair frame to now roll foward to open the entry door. Sadly using the wheelchair brakes just make things all that much more frustrating.
2nd Image: 3 ft ramp $219. This seems decent right? It isn't. You have to account for the pitch or slope.
If you have a threshold that is 10 inches higher than the surface you need to reach, this means you need not just a ten foot long ramp but a raised area that meets the threshold that the ramp attaches to closest to the surface you're trying to reach.
What happens if you decide to use a short ramp and have a steeper slope? The worst will be to flip backwards going up. Next worst you don't have the upper body strength to make it. The next will be you deciding never to use it except to exit with. It is a little less scary going down. Although you need really good hand strength and dexterity to maintain control at higher speeds.
ADDING INFO AS A SAFETY REMINDER: Most manual wheelchairs have what are called brakes. ⚠️ ⚠️ ⚠️ These are NOT brakes like those of a car, or bicycle. Injury or worse can happen when they are used as friction brakes. DANGER: You risk not only destroying your tire and wheelchair but also injuries from catastrophic failures of the tire and possibly the rims of the wheels.
These levers no matter if they are push or pull to lock or scissor styled brakes are only meant and made to hold you in place AFTER you use your hands to stop with. OR FEET for those able to do that.
The reason these are not brakes in the typical sense is because of how they work. They bite into the tire material and can blow out air filled tires by ripping through the rubber tire. On solid tires they can tear the tire causing it to fail and possibly fall off the rim. If the rim is left exposed and you are moving the metal or composite rim will slide on the surface.
The biggest excuses I hear for using these levers as brakes are: They are called brakes. YouTube wheelchair brake basics how to use and not use them. I don't want people ending more disabled than they already are.
My hands are to weak to stop me. I understand that. So my best suggestion is rubber coated work gooves. Leather gloves or some form of glove that you like to use. I personally don't like wearing gloves, but when I go on 16 mile strolls I wear a pair. They provide additional traction and that grip means less hand strength is needed to stop overall. It is not recommended to grab the tire for additional friction at any time while moving down hill.
If tire use us needed make sure you have a pair of heavy duty leather gloves on. Welding gloves short gauntlet works. Warning: This method destroys gloves rapidly. These is due to the sandpaper like friction the tire creates with its texture and tread design. Extreme heat can build up and burn your hands. So pay attention and release grip changing hand positions to reduce this.
Ramps have to be designed to work with the fact wheels like to roll. And steep ramps are what prompted my warning about brake use.
I am considering designing a brake system to work like a bicycle that could be added by most people. I will look into this concept at some point.
So a stubby short ramp might be low cost but isn't the answer it appears in most manufacturers images.
Lots of information that needs to be shared because so many people will fall into the thinking what they have is a good solution and it's harming them and the equipment they use.
Good news here: Most towns and cities do not charge or keep the charge very low for ramp and other disability access devices in public spaces.
What the permit does is show you the bare minimum of what is required to make your project ADA compliant. Also it resistors your ramp or lift with the town or city and at what property. This way should a nosy neighbor want to whine about your project looking horrible the town or city can reassure that negative rube that you are in full compliance with all the ordinances and ADA requirements. So they can mind their own beeswax.
Also the permit is a must if a property owner or landlord are to allow the access in the first place. This has to do with liability and property insurance. Speaking of that crap it would be wise to invest in renters insurance in the event someone claimsxto have been injured by your device. Do not depend only on the landlord or property owner's word that its covered. You could also ask your town or city how that works also to get a straight answer. If the landlord or property owner does claim you are covered always get that in writing.
3rd image shows the lack of what is called a staging area. This is exactly what a porch does. Notice the porch is flat and provides room to move out of the way of any storm door? This is a super important and all to easy to miss feature that makes a ramp go from frustrating to awesome.
I even made that mistake with my ramp I built for my garage. I did change it so it has a 6ft deep 4ft wide same as the ramp staging area that once I installed a screen door I use daily.
4th image: Now it gets colorful. Nothing attaches to the porch or the building in my design. This is to respect the property. And save you on extra costs to restore things later.
The support for the flat area of the porch:
Measure uo to the front top edge of the threshold. Say this is 6 inches or so... Using 4X4 cut to the same width of the porch. These are rated for outdoor ground contact.
Next using decking wood this should be equal to the top front edge of the threshold. In effect the timbers are the support they are orange and just on top of the porch. They go across to provide full support.
How to determine how many. For the porch shown in your image would likely use three. One right under the threshold, one in the middle, and one right along the front edge of the porch.
Decking would go left to right and for the parts with out full support use scrap pieces of 4X4 to position under those rows.
An alternative way to set the supports are: under the threshold is left to right full width of porch. Then instead of the others being left to right. Place one on the left going vertical or not left to right. One on the right side going perpendicular to fhe horizontal one. Then you will cut one 4 inches short for the center also placed parallel to the left and right. The front porch edge piece cut to fit the width between the left and right support.
That would allow you to place decking horizontally left to right with out worry of adding support for some of the deck strips.
The front edge of porch part I feel should be left to right mainly to insure there is no possible way for a ramp to flext or bow in this area. But you are welcome to Google methods on building something like this also.
The ramp for the porch will be the longest most likely based on the photos you shared. They are also referenced later in my post.
Only around the porch and the outside of the caster wheel guides on each side or the blue color in my image needs a railing, as well as down that first ramp.
The other ramps are little more than the plywood laying there. You wouldn't even really need the blue guides on the but they add additional stiffness from bouncing and bending.
Again Google is very good for finding examples of how you can design a capable railing. It doesn't need to be fancy, just meet the requirements the ADA sets. To avoid annoying splinters I strongly suggest using iron pipe or proper outdoor rated round railingbars.
Benefit of the metal pipe is it is very low cost. Con is in the sun it can get hot. To overcome thar railing grip tape can he used to cancle out the hot part and make it easier to grasp. Grip tape is not required.
Thankfully all of this is pretty easy to do if you have some some basic tools or have access to them like narrowing them. If you lack the skill or ability to do this. Trust me when I say buying lunch each day for the hard worker(s) often is payment enough. And Thank You is the perfect payment. Our reward is seeing you enjoying the work put into the project.
Last there is an green outline of a 2x4 on each side of the porch staging area. Put one on the far side as well and this should keep the staging area from shifting leftcand right. Surfaces endure a lot more force than we realize.
5th image I used my garage ramp before I corrected the flat staging area issue.
So this isn't how my indoor ramp now looks. It has no railings as it is not required and the flat area towards the garage side has a 4 inch tall wheel guard wall to keep me from accidentally rolling off front casters or rear wheels.
But, this is roughly how your front porch would look like. All designed to keep everyone safe who uses it.
By connecting the ramp to the flat staging areas makes it much harder for it to shift around. In the case of this if you owned the property you would use a contractors grade waterproof glue and 4 8 inch long lag bolts to secure the 4x4 or wood support right next to and under the threshold and bolt it and glue it to the location. Silicone sealant works also as it is mainly to keep insects from making the area home.
But since the property needs to be returned to original state, I find that making a saddle staging area works wonders. Sadlle in that it is,like a horse saddle. It isn't bolted to the horse but does use the shape of the horse as the stabilizer. And is easy to remove when needed.
Image 6: Sorry about the messy drawing. This is your photo.
The green is the railing around the porch and the first longest ramp.
The light kind of red horizontal strips are stair tread grip tape. Using wood screws shorter than the thickness of the plywood allows you to have a 2 method way to keep these strips in place. For how much they cost you will thank me. One screw near each corner and two one top one bottom in the center. This insures they are secure. The gue or adhesive isn't likely going to stick in every case.
You want full left to right coverage with 2 to 3 inch spacing between each horizontal strip. Yes you can just apply them centered and hope no one slips of they walk closer to the railing. Plus it makes insurance companies feel better also with more safety in mind.
In the event someone slips or falls when pictures are taken of l the scene it will look better for you to have provided more safety than not.
Also more screws can be used if desired. The only thing to make sure of is all screw heads are flat to the surface. The two method way also known as redundant measures to make sure things don't fail to the point of a catastrophe.
The ADA will likely have other suggestions different than I mention. Either will work, I find much of my ideas go beyond ADA requirements.
The ramps since they are so minor in slope may even be able to lay strips of 2x4 or even 1x1 that you screw to the underside of ramp. I almost think you could make what would look like a continuous ramp.
One step won't really need all 8 ft of plywood however keeping them full length means you could likely add smaller pieces where one ramp ends to meet with the highest point so you can connect them so this keeps them from shifting and moving as they will.
The little green marks along the sides of the blue for the length of the ramp represent side supports that are rounded into the ground and screwed to the sides.
As you use a ramp that is not secured it will move a little in the opposite direction of your direction of travel.
Also it will shift left or right when you first roll onto it. And since the ground shown is easy to return to its original condition once this is removed lowers cost at that time.
The blue dots represent horizontal srips placed where needed these are screwed in place as yes they will slide and move into new positions that don't support the ramp.
The goal is no bouncing, bending, flexing, warping ramps.
As long as all wood is rated for ground contact otherwise it will rot away pretty quickly otherwise.
The blue kind of bloody areas are flat sections filled in with plywood.
So once you enter this ramp ot remains a plywood surface until the porch area. Where it's decking.
7th image: An example of how your ramp could be designed. In this image since the ramp os longer and rises up higher I definitely would include ratings on each side. But - it may not require them so that is OK also. The redish area is a flat area at least 5 ft deep and 4ft wide. This would allow a person the chance to turn around also.
The circled spots denote support placement.
Now your steps for me would not need a ramp as I can strong arm my way up short steps or curbs like those. Tha porch would be the only area I would build if this were my place.
8th image: Immediately after moving in I built this and prior to finding the original screen door that the price owners removed and I reinstalled.
It was no fun using this ramp when I had to open the door. I typically had one of the kiddos now all grown up open it first for me.
The lack of a staging or flat area is a huge mistake.
This is ground contact outdoor rated plywood nearly 1 inch thick. Plywood keeps the construction simpler, and removal easier also later.
9th image: Shows the outdoor ramp. Notice the grip tape on this. This is the typical arrangement. I suggest side to side full width strips so able people can walk anyplace and be assured solid footing. The spacing I prefer also assures wheelchair tires have solid grip.
The steeper the ramp I say 3 inches between horizontal strips.
The shallower ramps for your lower or step ramps can be 4 to five inches between them. If they are wide strips works better.
Image 10: This is the ADA recommendation: 36 inches wide. Trust me especially for entry doors you want some space to move over to the side to get out of the way of a screen or storm door. And a place to put down groceries or a package or anything else so you can access the door.
48 inches just happens to be a pretty decent and better than ADA requirements that allows you more room for any purposes.
Image 11: Shows your porch. From what I see this should be pretty easy to cover with the staging area over the porch and ramp going down.
You want to measure from the front edge ofcthe threshold to the ground in front of the porch the walkway leading to it. This will give you a total height that needs to be accounted for.
Say it is a total of 10 inches tall. Your ramp will be 1 foot out per one inch in height. So 10 feet long. Now say you have the room and used 2 8 foot long plywood sheets end to end that is 16 ft. That means your slope will be less overall and easy to roll up. 10 ft will be usable but will be a little harder to roll up.
Funny thing is you use the same energy to roll up 10ft or 16ft. You just exert less energy over a longer distance that still equals the amount it takes to go up a 10 foot length.
Slope is something only you know what works for you. So if you need a little longer of a ramp if room allows it then that is fine.
Oh I forgot skip over the smaller step when making your measurements. That isn't where a ramp will end at to rest.
Image 12: The walkway. These little steps are easily rolled up by some wheelchair users. However of you can not. That is fine.
The over all length of these looks decently long enough. You in effect are just governing them as I hope I explained.
To keep the ramps from moving side spikes can be placed as mentioned 2 at the sides and top, two in the middle sides. And 2 and the bottom sides.
They get rounded into the ground next to each area of the Ramos they will be screwed to. You might even be able to lay a plywood sheet down and see if that is enough to raise you up enough. That the plywood could just lay on the walkway.
Now most likely that option will not fully work. Offered as an alternative.
The very end where ramp ends or starts at the lowest point you can get an aluminum door threshold commercial grade one. It means a little bump up onto the ramp and or down it.
I will photograph the one I have as it works like a charm. Also the rest of my garage ramp.
The deck to ramp can be connected using lag bolts from underneath into the 2 4x4 support. Using 6 or preferred 7 or 8 inch long lag bolts 3 of them to secure the ramp to the staging deck area.
Trust me when I say this, this is a mere drop in the bucket of information on how to design a ramp system.
Last little note:
Always get a permit prior making anything. The permit should cost nothing or very little since it is an accessibility ♿️ need. The information the permit comes with will also be of huge help in DIY or other options.
Sadly there is no way to construct something like this for no cost. However, church groups, friends, local elected officials, and others can be great resources. From fundraising, to helping you locate a foundation or charity to help cover some or all of it.
Do not feel bad for asking for help like this and when needed. Being a renter doesn't mean you should not have accessibility.
Like I mentioned if I was your fellow disabled neighbor I would help construct this.
Tools needed:
Tape measure x 2 I always end up needing 2 of them at times.
4 ft level.
Carpenter square.
Torpedo level. This is a 1 foot long smaller level like the larger 4ft one.
Carpenter or construction style pencil ✏️ they are flat and don't roll away when sat down.
Wood/deck screws 3 or 4in long.
Cordless drill and 2 batteries allows rotation of them when charging. They typically will last 2 or hours each. So when one runs out charge it while using the other.
Leather work gloves.
Socket wrench set for lag bolts.
Screw driver set. Mainly a number 2 Phillips and flathead. These come in handy.
Circular saw - they come corded or cordless either works.
Hand saw for those cuts to awkward for a power tool.
Drill bits for pre drilling holes.
Liquid nails to glue some things together.
Short wood screws not longer than the plywood is thick. For the grip tape strips.
Safety glasses get a few pair.
Hearing protection. Cutting wood can be really loud. Same with drilling it and all.
Things that could help: Something stable to place wood to be cut on.
Saw horses or milk crates the sturdy plastic ones. If they get cut into no big deal.
They cut be cut safely on the ground without risk of damaging tools or injuring you.
Since we are all in the same boat 🚢 in many respects, I find it sp satisfying helping people by helping them learn how they can also help themselves. It's how I was raised. Knowing you have some information and know where to locate more is my payment.
Back to me talking about my live content.
A lot like this post and my others, it is insanely boring stuff. 😴
However, I ask what other content creator is willing to discuss and cover this type of stuff?
Really go look on Twitch live, YouTube live, TikTok Live, Kick,Instagram Live or any other site allowing live content.
How many do you find that can answer questions or get you aimed in the correct direction for the information you need?
16 years now this is what I do for free. I will not and do not monetize my content. I removed myself from Twitch affiliate orogram, I have asked TikTok to allow offboarding and the option to not monetize.
I prefer to lead by example.
Please consider getting to know this strange goofball of a weirdo on my social media channels. It's not a big community but any means and is well sp unique that most people fail to realize all the nerdy disability related bits of knowledge I have to share. Plus I love light sabers and anime to make me extra geeky.
AbiliTV and AbiliTV Live on the main social media platforms.
On TikTok my actual username is AbiliTV and my screen or showing name is DJ Wheelchairbeats.
If you visit tell me your from Reddit and I will in a very socially awkward way greet you. Well I hope with practice this gets less awkward in time. :)
I am not seeking a relationship. Or any side quests. I am at level 54 in my life and to old to give a fart for drama. Making cool new friends, now that's what it's about.
Time to get some photos of my garage ramp.

2024.04.28 21:23 thegrimreaper069 Brain Drain an issue created by the government?

NO VALUE FOR THE LIFE OF TEENAGERS
Why does government play blind when so many students are dying by suicide each day. From class 12th to graduation this nonchalant behaviour of government has been taking so many student's life everyday. They have time to debate on hindu muslim mughal british but don't have time to do debates or spread awareness. I have seen so many sucide cases recently on social media and newspaper but none in mainstream media. The government boasts that they will have a productive population in next 10 years but probably no student would like to stay in such a country where their lives are not valued.
THE RACKET OF COACHING AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES
The coachings have become a sort of godfather in the world of education in India. May it be for Jee Neet or any civil service exams. The coachings litreally toy with the life of students they make them pay so high amounts of their parents hard earned money but segregate them if they do bad in one test. If you take equal money then my not equal education and these coachings have brainwashed the parents by making toppers look like some avatars of gods and heroes. The Government does not give shit about what happens in this centers even these coaching rackets donated electoral bonds, I guess why there is need for institutes made for education to get them in politics.
THE RAT RACE
Glorification of the rat races such as jee neet and upsc has been increasing rapidly. Students are wasting their prime teenage years for the preparation of exams that were put onto them by the society. If a child takes pcm he has to do engineering , if he has taken pcb. he has to go in medical and if he has taken commerce they need to do mba or ca. Why is their no support by government to other extra curricular fields. We being such a big country still suck at olympics, don't have a football team good enough to be top 50 in the world, expect cricket and some other sports we haven't done shit on the name of sports. The reason being how discouaraged people are made if they decide to do anything other than rat race becaause preimer institutes in india dont care about your talent but if you can succeed in the rat race.
Lack of good colleges
The government has neglected education to such a point that there are not really many good colleges in india for any given subject except a few. That too are so poorly maintained lack of facilities, infrastructure, proffesors in the supposed premier institutes is shocking. Btw expect for a few colleges other colleges can't even hold candles infront of foreign unis. Their tier 3 colleges are better than most of our tier 2s. And for 40-50 thousand seats in both medical and engineering lacks of students have to go through the struggle pressure and so many emotions that break them from inside and turn them into robots without passion. Just check the toppers of iits they all moved out from india even after getting the best colleges in india because they knew it is not the best they can get. you feel very proud when you see or hear about some indian origin person doing something great outside but ever thinked about why they are Indian origins but not Indians.
WHY NOT TO MOVE ABROAD;
After a student faces these many struggles so early one trust me he starts to look for a way out at that time there is no nationality because your life is not for others to decide and neither can your decision influenced by the narcissistic opinions of some people who would still support the government when their houses are burning. Trust me everybody is an patriotic national until their H1b visa approves, and it is more prevalent in gen-Z because we know that in this short life if we want to do something on our own or have freedom from this judgemental society then it is to escape. And trust me once they go out 70 percent don't return back because they don't want to downgrade their life again.
WHY THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE BLAMED
First of all let me make clear i don't endorse any parties all of them are corrupted to the core. The government has the power to change many things i mentioned in the above lines but they don't care to do so and say a big Fuck you on the faces of the Indian teens. So why should the students think about the country when the country dosen't give a shit about them. In this world asking for something when you gave nothing is stupid. If India does not change the education systems and policies maybe we will have the largest working population in the next 10 years but they would not be working for India. If you still want to defend the government then you are most welcomed but the students who suffered from all these really dont give two sh*ts about your opinion.

2024.04.28 20:56 CopleyGuy Question about odd message displayed

2015 S550 here.
The other day, my wife muted the music by pressing the volume roller on the center console, as usual. She must have held it for a second too long, because a quick message flashed at the top of the media console. Text said something like ‘trigger (some number string) activated, saving…’
Nothing obvious has changed on the media display, but I now have these annoying up/down arrows on the automatic gear display next to the P, R, N indicators.
Anyone have any info on what system was triggered and how to get rid of the indicators?
Thanks in advance!

2024.04.28 20:40 Underwhere_Overthere LittleBigPlanet Retrospective

Post Synopsis

This write-up will discuss LittleBigPlanet’s humble origins, its place in the market in 2008, its unique features and mechanics, and a brief summary of the games, impact, and news following the first game. It will be broken down into five sections listed below.

I. Introduction

With the advent of the Internet, user-generated content has become an increasingly common phenomenon, and in the last ~20 years in particular, it has propelled entire platforms to become major media centers and empowered users to explore and express their creative side. In 2006, Time named “You” as their person of the year, referring to the millions of users who had contributed user-generated content to websites like YouTube, MySpace, Facebook, Wikipedia, and others, and Business 2.0 and ABC News gave similar accolades to "You" in 2006. In the realm of video games, user-generated content has practically become a genre in itself, with modern examples like Minecraft, Roblox, and Super Mario Maker amassing millions of players and building dedicated communities around them that have persisted for years.
LittleBigPlanet was one of the earliest examples in the console space built around the concept of user-generated content. The tools available were top-of-the-line and the best available for a console game at that time. But its appeal as a game went beyond just its robust level editor: the multiplayer and network features, the customization options, and the inviting art style and family-friendly image filled a much-needed niche in the early PS3 library. Its broad appeal enabled it to become one of Sony’s flagship series.

II. Origins of Media Molecule

Rag Doll Kung Fu, The Room, and the Formation of Media Molecule
Media Molecule was founded in January 2006 by four former employees of Lionhead Studios – the studio behind Fable and Black & White. Before forming Media Molecule, members of the team worked on Rag Doll Kung Fu in their free time, and even starred in live action cut-scenes for the game. After presenting the game to a crowd of 300 people at GDC 2005, Mark Healey was approached by both Valve and Nintendo to bring the game to their platform, and ultimately worked out a deal with Valve to put the game on their then new digital platform Steam. Rag Doll Kung Fu was the first third party game on the platform.
Around this same time, the would-be Media Molecule founders built a tech demo called “The Room.” The Room featured elements of creation that would later form the framework of LittleBigPlanet – players could mold objects out of clay and move objects around the room. Valve was interested in hiring them to develop The Room or another project, but it never came to fruition. The Room also featured portals the player could move between. Coincidentally, Valve would hire the students behind Narbacular Drop – which used a similar portal concept as its central game mechanic – that same year (2005) to expand their concept, and eventually create Portal in 2007.
Soon after their work on Rag Doll Kung Fu and The Room, Mark Healey and three other Lionhead Studio employees – Alex Evans, Kareem Ettourney, and David Smith – resigned on the same day to start up their own company, which they called Media Molecule. They turned in their notice to Peter Molyneux, one of the founders of Lionhead Studios, and a man Healey had worked with for around 15 years, between both Bullfrog Productions and Lionhead Studios. While he was disappointed to lose four talented developers on the same day, he wished them well and was happy that they were striking out on their own, rather than taking jobs at Valve.
Initially, the team didn’t have a clear vision of what they wanted their game to be outside of a few general principles. In a 2007 interview with GameSpot, Healey had this to say:
“The idea was to make the most ambitious game we possibly could," Healey said, "and most importantly, get somebody else to pay for it.
Healey went on to talk about the tumultuous nature of working on a creative project:
"What we're aiming to do with the game we're making is somehow give that to people and take away the tedium," Healey said.
Meeting with Sony and Development of LittleBigPlanet
In the initial talks with then President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison in January 2006, Media Molecule presented a demo called “Craftworld” starring Mr. Yellowhead – who would later be featured as a collectible costume in LittleBigPlanet. Craftworld was a physics-based side-scrolling platformer, with no button presses – the character’s movement was wired to the exact physical movements of the analog sticks, which was a novel idea at the time. Instead of using PowerPoint, Media Molecule made a live demo play within their presentation. Alex Evans recalled the meeting at the Develop 2011 Conference in Brighton:
“Our first meeting with Phil was meant to be a 30 minute pitch for our idea for a game called Craftworld that soon turned into a 3 hour brainstorming session,” explained Evans. “Phil said all sorts of buzzwords that hadn’t really hit yet. He said it should be driven by DLC and that it should be free-to-play, have a social core and premium, paid-for content.
This is interesting, because this model didn’t really exist yet on consoles back in January 2006 – the infamous The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’s horse armor DLC (today it’d be called a microtransaction) was still three months away. However, Sony was working on PlayStation Home around this time which shared these core tenants and was being pushed by Phil Harrison. Despite these initial talks, LittleBigPlanet ended up releasing as a $60 USD game rather than a free-to-play title, though microtransactions in the form of costumes and DLC level packs did make it into the game. Sony would revisit the idea of a free-to-play LittleBigPlanet title in the form of LittleBigPlanet Hub, which was planned to launch in late 2013, but the project was canceled, and presumably the work for it was carried over to LittleBigPlanet 3, which was also sold as a $60 USD game.
Soon after their meeting with Phil Harrison, Sony agreed to fund the project for six months, after which they’d need a playable prototype ready to demonstrate. This was later extended by another three months, as the demo after the initial period was reportedly “unfocused and unplayable.” Alex Evans recalls debugging the game the night before the presentation because the game slowed to a crawl when a fourth controller was added. The game was revealed at GDC 2007 for two reasons, according to Phil Harrison:
“Firstly, I wanted to demonstrate the future of games, which was service-based projects: always on, no end to them. And secondly, to communicate the idea about the user being the creative manager of content. LittleBigPlanet and Home were perfect examples of that.”
Media Molecule would go on to release LittleBigPlanet in October 2008. In less than three years, the team went from a vague premise to a landmark title for the PS3, as well as the second highest rated game of 2008, according to Metacritic. It’s interesting that the team didn’t really have a clear idea of what they wanted to create before their leaving their jobs when LittleBigPlanet feels like such a spark of creative energy, which coincidentally is the premise for the game itself.

III. General Game Overview

The Market in 2008 and LittleBigPlanet's Unique Appeal
As the 2000s wore on, and particularly with the arrival of the HD consoles, it seemed AAA platformers were being phased out. Studios known for their platformers in the 1990s and early-mid 2000s, like Rare, Naughty Dog, and Sucker Punch, were moving away from them, leaving Mario and Ratchet & Clank to carry the genre in the late 2000s. A platformer wasn’t exactly what people thought of as a “next-gen” experience on the HD consoles at the time (PlayStation 3/Xbox 360). It seemed more studios were focused on bringing about more realistic experiences, typically ones that had guns and/or cars. LittleBigPlanet released in a year with games like Grand Theft Auto IV, Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Resistance 2, etc. – games that prioritized realistic graphics, gritty settings, and cinematic set-pieces.
However, if there was a way to make a platformer feel next-gen rather than iterative of the design we had seen for over a decade at that point, LittleBigPlanet achieved it, by utilizing network features and user-generated content as its central focus. The story mode acted as both a fun adventure to play through as well as a showcase of what was possible with the extensive level editor, which allowed players to share levels online and access a database of levels from users all around the world, and even use user-created objects as collectibles in one’s own levels. Its appeal was broadened beyond just the scope of a conventional platformer though, as users would utilize the level editor to create more experimental levels - like this museum level featured in Mm Picks. LittleBigPlanet 2 would expand on this concept further.
The handcrafted art-style was an excellent complement to the game’s vision as a vehicle for level creation, and it allowed parts to be glued together without looking amiss. The idea of customization was extended to the player's character: Sackboy acted as a blank canvas that could be customized, but his knitted nature didn’t look out of place on marketing with nothing on. The soundtrack featured licensed music and spanned all different eras and cultures yet somehow formed a cohesive package – much like the nature of putting together a level using various parts and materials.
Curation Tools and Mm Picks
Sharing and playing community levels was a seamless experience held up by some awesome curation tools. You could play levels off the game’s servers without going through a download process. Additionally, levels featured tags for categorizing types of levels, hearts for bookmarking them, a five-star rating system (later changed to a thumbs up/thumbs down), a comment section, and the ability to view the profile of users to see their levels and favorites. These features are all ubiquitous now and were likely inspired by YouTube’s curation tools, but it was by far the best infrastructure in a game with online level sharing on consoles at that point. Additionally, LittleBigPlanet benefitted from the rise of outside media platforms, namely YouTube, as a way to showcase levels on message boards.
Adding to these curation tools was Media Molecule Picks (Mm Picks), which were community levels branded with Media Molecule’s emblem, signifying their exceptional quality or experimental ideas. This was before Twitter became ubiquitous and developers – and businesses in general – had less direct interaction with their users. Mm Picks were instead posted to their website and even included embedded YouTube videos of the levels, though they did join Twitter seven months after the game’s release, in May 2009. It was a novel thing to see the developer of a game take part in the community of a game in that way, and it was personally the first instance I recall seeing of something like that (as primarily a console gamer at the time). Media Molecule went a step further by including 18 users to create bonus levels for the Game of the Year Edition of the game in 2009.
Additionally, Media Molecule added water in the Pirates of the Caribbean level pack in December 2009 after much clamoring for it in message boards. It’s possible this was already in the works since they had to work out the licensing with Disney in advance, but the trailer seemed to acknowledge that Media Molecule had heard the requests for water in the game. Unfortunately, it and many other cross-promotional level packs are now unavailable to download due to licensing agreements expiring. At the time, DLC seemed liked a great fit for the game, as every added item to the game multiplied what was possible with the game’s level editor, and the frequent level kits would regularly reinvigorate interest in the community. However, many are now inaccessible through practical means (not all level kits were included in the Game of the Year Edition).
Multiplayer
LittleBigPlanet made no concessions with its multiplayer – it was four-players locally, online, or a mix of the two – in story mode, community levels, and creation mode – it featured both cooperative and competitive elements, but the game could still be experienced as a single player experience if desired. Other games usually come with a caveat – either they’re local or online only, provide multiplayer only in certain designated modes, and/or limit the number of players to just two. There were some camera issues in local play in certain fast-paced and/or vertical levels, but the widescreen helped make the game feel less crowded than it otherwise would have (widescreen had just recently become ubiquitous on the HD consoles during this time).
LittleBigPlanet also incorporated a lot of elements that amounted to just goofing around, like slapping your friends, painting them with stickers, grabbing them, and making smiley faces after watching them fall to their death. As inconsequential as these qualities might seem when typing them out like this, people got a ton of mileage out of these.
The competitive play didn’t really work in favor of the platforming levels, but the more experimental, survival-based levels did lead to some fun competition. Chasing leaderboards, collecting all prize bubbles and keys, completing a level with no deaths for rewards, and completing optional co-op puzzles led to a great deal of replayability among the story levels, so there was plenty of reason to jump back into them with someone new, especially since the game had plenty to reward you with in the form of objects, stickers, costumes, and bonus levels.

IV. Post-LittleBigPlanet 1

General Overview of the Series' Games
Sackboy became Sony’s family-friendly mascot and was featured in many advertisements during the Kevin Butler-era. He has been featured as a playable characteskin in games like ModNation Racers, Minecraft, Fall Guys, and Sony’s platform fighter PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale. The series has regularly showcased the new features of Sony’s hardware: the PlayStation Eye and network features in the original game, the PlayStation Move controller in Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves, and the touchpad in the PS Vita game – although in recent years, it seems Astro Bot has been positioned to showcase these features more than Sackboy’s games (the VR headset and DualSense controller).
There were eight LittleBigPlanet/Sackboy games released between 2008 and 2014, plus a ton of DLC content – since then there have been just two (the last one was a 2023 mobile runner title), neither of which include the creation tools the series was founded on. However, Sackboy: A Big Adventure did retain the cooperative multiplayer, which I believe is an important part of the series’ legacy and isn’t as easy to transition to a 3D platformer.
Media Molecule and the Series' Evolution
Media Molecule stepped away as the main developer after LittleBigPlanet 2 (2011), acting as support for some of the later games. It really shows, as LittleBigPlanet 2 was a major evolution over the first game and expanded the tools and what was possible with the level editor to such a degree its identity as a platform game became blurry: you could make a retro-style arcade game with unique physics, a turn-based battle system, a top-down racer, in-game movies, etc. The possibilities felt endless.
In contrast, LittleBigPlanet 3 was the buggiest game I had ever played at launch, though most of the game-breaking bugs were ironed out over time, it lost its momentum and was still a pretty buggy experience in the end. It did bring some new tools to the table - namely the new characters with unique abilities - but the improvements were much more modest/complementary to the original design, than the massive evolution that was LittleBigPlanet 2. Media Molecule has since developed Tearaway and Dreams, though many of the studio founders have since left the company.
Server Shutdowns
LittleBigPlanet 2 and 3 carried over levels from the previous mainline game(s) - it was nice to know users' works were being preserved. However, there were many bugs in LittleBigPlanet 3 when accessing levels from the first two games so it really wasn't the ideal way to experience them. Sony had shutdown the servers for the PS3 games in September 2021, so it was the only way to play a lot of these old levels for awhile.
Unfortunately, the LittleBigPlanet 3 servers – and therefore all uploaded community created levels from the first three mainline games – were just recently shutdown after being compromised by hackers in January 2024. While the story levels remain, it’s disappointing to know you can only re-experience part of a beloved game, and not the game in its whole. Many of the levels people remember the game by are now lost to time, after 15 years. The ending of LittleBigPlanet even highlights the community levels, as if the ending of the story mode is just the beginning for the rest of the game.
Showing future generations LittleBigPlanet will always come with the caveat that there was much more to the game than they’re able to experience, unlike other classics like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, as there are custom servers that have retained some of the more popular levels. It goes to show the love the community has for the game.

V. Closing

LittleBigPlanet's slogan of “Play, Create, Share” was superbly executed on all fronts – falling short in even one of these areas would’ve been enough to taint the whole experience: without good gameplay, it wouldn’t be worth making levels, without good creation tools, it wouldn’t be worth sharing levels, without good sharing and curation tools, it wouldn’t be worth keeping a vested interest in playing the game and engaging with the community. But it went even beyond that, with a great art-style that complemented the game's vision of creation, excellent and all-encompassing multiplayer, and active engagement from Media Molecule with the community, through Mm Picks and DLC. It really seems like the type of game that would’ve taken a second game to get right, but instead they got the first game right and made an even more incredible sequel. It brought something uniquely its own to the PS3 in 2008 and earned its place as a flagship PlayStation series.

2024.04.28 20:09 Haunting_Equal320 WIBTA if I send my mother to jail for stealing my identity while my father is on his deathbed?

I recently decided that i wanted to try and sign up for a credit card. I had hoped it would be different than past attempts.
I (23F) had always had issues with credit in the past and I had assumed it had to do with having zero credit, until i checked my credit score for the first time. Everytime I applied for an apartment, a car loan, a student loan, even the most basic credit card, I was denied.
I prepared for my search for the perfect starter card for folks with no credit. I joined a credit union and their app features a credit report and I was shocked to see that I did indeed have credit, and it was not good, sitting in the lowest of the 400's with debt collections. I had always assumed my problem was having no credit.
I brazenly researched ways to dispute the collections. I noticed something familiar. One of the credit lines sent to collections was from a catalog called Fingerhut.
There was no way i had accessed this credit, and So I was certain this was fraud. I reread the facts laid to me by the credit score for about 15 minutes before it had dawned on me.
My estranged mother had always openly struggled with her credit. She would often engage in lowball tactics to elevate her credit or establish a line of credit to fuel spending. She would often patron Rent-A-Centers and catalogs such as Fingerhut(her fav) which brag basic credit that can be spent within their catalog.
Seeing Fingerhut in my debt collections on the report made me consider that the identity theft was someone i knew, the only person i knew who used Fingerhut and knows my social security. My mom.
I called their support line yesterday to try to figure out if this was malicious. I had to try the support line for another debt because i wanted answers and I didnt want to wait until the following monday, when other call centers would open
Speaking to the agent i could sense she was concerned i was fishing for someone elses information so I told her I had moved around many times since the debt and changed phone numbers/address so i needed to see which information matched the file. Thiankfully this convinced her. I was worried I wouldnt be able to get the answers i needed and the data would kept behind a wall of fraudulent Authentication protection.
The representative reluctantly revealed the phone number, two addresses and a teachers employee email, all of which matched my estranged mother
I havent spoken to my parents in 4 years but i understand my father is terminally ill with cancer. They are still married and very close, and she has been doing her best to take care of him from what i hear.
As Iook forward to my financial future I am concerned that if I dont handle this now it will prolongue getting apartments, my first car payment or even going back to school.
WIBTA if I report my mothers theft of my identity and a few thousand in debt? Would she face jailtime while my father is dying? I have read that turning her in is one of the only ways to clear my credit of her stupidity.

Picture this: it's the early 2010s, somewhere in the western world. Instagram is a novelty, Harvey Weinstein runs Hollywood, almost no one on Earth leans one way or the other about RNA vaccines, and Donald Trump is that one real estate guy you vaguely remember from Home Alone 2. New player Lady Gaga is the most interesting thing to have happened to pop since Madonna, and the whole industry is attempting to catch up; Miley Cyrus is the chick who used to be on Hannah Montana; Melanie Martinez hasn't hatched yet. The time of Oddball Concept Divas is dawning just below the horizon.
You're a Bowie-loving student who skipped goth night at the club to tag along with your art school friends for a very special evening. You're a giddy sixteen-year old rocking cat ears, purple Wet 'n Wild eyeliner, a polyester petticoat, and a coffin-shaped backpack. You're an effete theater kid who sewed his own waistcoat for the occasion, but won't dare wear it to school the next day. You're a buff, bearded dude in a Venom shirt who's trying not to look too excited, since your girlfriend supposedly had to drag you here. You're a slightly bemused parent leaning against the back wall of the venue, sipping a warm half-pint, wondering if this isn't all a bit dark for a tween. (“It's called 'Victoriandustrial', mom,” you've been told in the car, “and it's not dark, it's art.”)
On stage is a pink-haired woman, with red porcelain-doll lips and a heart painted on her cheek. Among a set of antique consoles, twee tchotchkes, teacups and plastic rats, she pounces and twirls in glittery platform boots, tattered striped stockings, and a tightly laced crystal-studded corset that looks like it's splattered in blood. This is ostensibly a concert, but there is no live band. Where one would expect a drum kit or a bass, three bedazzled burlesque vixens act as back-up singers and dancers, with the occasional vaudeville act – a fire-twirling number, a fan dance, throwing pastries and spitting tea into the audience. Lots of wholesome girl-on-girl kissing, too. The music on the backing track is a genre-bender of clanging beats and beeps, lofty orchestral strings, and the frantic hammering of a MIDI harpsichord, as the pink-haired frontlady sings of heartache and betrayal and drowning. Think if the Brontë sisters had invented industrial rock.
The audience gasps in excitement when the lady whips out a vamped-out wireless electric violin. With rockstar cool and virtuoso poise, she leans into the instrument, touches the bow to the strings, and tears out a single plaintive, impeccably distorted high note. Then her fingers go wild, and for a few seconds, everything is perfect suspended animation. Uncannily perfect, almost. Just behind you, you hear someone whisper: “Wait, is she miming it?”

Forgive the theatrical intro, but I had to set the stage for... the drama. And I do mean drama in the thespian sense of the term! This, ladies and gentlemen, is a Shakespeare play: wordy and confusing, but it's neat how the main character's opening lines foreshadow the tragic climax. It's a Greek tragedy for the digital age – if, instead of killing his dad and banging his mom, after becoming king, Oedipus was doomed to becoming uniquely obnoxious. It's The Rocky Horror Show under the grim direction of Samuel Beckett. Like all good theatre, this story is about how fiction bleeds into reality – through the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, and how all the world's a stage and all that.

WHO IS EMILIE AUTUMN, AND WHAT'S THE DRAMA?

Here's the Broadway Weekly blurb, so you can decide whether the show is worth your time: Emilie Autumn, also known as EA, is a US-American alternative singer-songwriter, author, and actor. She became known in alt circles in the mid-2010s for her violin skills, unique fashion, outspoken stances on feminism and mental health advocacy, and the way she dramatized and sublimated her own life story in her art. In 2009, she self-published a semi-autobiographical book that became a sort of bible to her creative universe and fandom. She toured extensively and enjoyed niche, but considerable success until the mid-2010s – with hordes of devoted fans adopting her fashion sense and lingo, and crediting her music for getting them through dark times.
For the past twelve years or so, EA has mostly been focused on adapting her book into a stage musical, releasing two more albums of songs intended for the libretto. At the time of this write-up, it has been six years since the last album and a decade since the last live show. Although she still talks about the musical as an ongoing, Broadway-bound project, in recent years, she's often gone dark for months at a time on social media. There is no forum, no large Discord, no active community to speak of; comments are restricted on her currently-inactive Instagram and blog.
Who is she hiding from, you ask? Why, you've probably guessed it: the hordes of devoted fans whom she infuriates every time she does anything.
And what are they furious about? (Or frustrated, flummoxed, or plain ol' flabbergasted?) Well, it depends who you ask. For some, it's disappointment in her artistic and marketing choices (what are fans for?). Others cite unkept promises or absurd release delays. For others yet, it's the AliBaba merch sold at jaw-dropping markups with three paragraphs of purple prose in the product description.. Or maybe it was the angry rants on Twitter? Okay, it's the casual bigotry that she staunchly denies or dismisses. It's the criticism she can't take. It's the fact that she won't stop lying about her own life! Either way, I don't personally know of any fanbase that has been so consistently exasperated, for so many years, and for such a diverse array of reasons, by their favorite artist.
In truth, each individual mini-scandal isn't all that juicy or scandalous. Nobody died, no one got sued; nothing of significant value, other than time and sanity, was taken away from anyone. What I find interesting here is the years and years of bizarre parasocial codependency (and antagonism) between a fragile woman who became addicted to her own poppycock, and an obsessive fanbase who cared way too much not to take it personally.
Before we even get to EA's relationship with her fans, you're going to need some lore about EA herself. A “Hobby History” of sorts. Strap in! There's romance, tragedy, laughter, character development, variety numbers, numerous costume changes, (actual) celebrity cameos – and based on how long this OpenOffice doc already is at the time of my writing this, we're probably going to need several intermissions too. This write-up is link-heavy, both with receipts and with additional watching and listening material. Not all of them need to be clicked in order to understand the story; I'm merely providing the rabbit holes. I've tried to make things more easily navigable by including a little glossary about the nature of links; one emoji-indicator carries over the next link until I use a different one.

BAROQUE BEGINNINGS: THE VIOLIN YEARS

VampireFreaks: Do you ever smile to yourself knowing your old music teachers might be seeing your success? EA: I smile to myself knowing they might be dead. (Long-lost interview, late 2000s)
Born in Malibu in the late 70s, Emilie Autumn, often known as EA, was originally trained as a classical violinist.
By her account, she started playing the violin at age 4, and was homeschooled at age 9 so that she could focus on her instrument. After stints at various performing arts colleges, some rather prestigious, she dropped out of formal schooling in her mid-to-late teens to embark on a solo violin career.
In 2001, after disappointing experiences with major record companies, she created her own label, Traitor Records, and released a EP of chamber music, with minor success. The stuffy industry of classical music didn't “get” the twenty-something manic-pixie-fiddler, who played Bach just a bit too fast, but with electric stage presence – wearing period corsets, combat boots, and the occasional fairy wings. But EA evidently knew that there was an audience for that somewhere.
And that somewhere – drumroll – was Illinois.
VW: What do you most hope to accomplish? EA: Everything. (‘Virtual World Radio’ Interview, 2002 📝)

ENCHANT ERA: BRUSHES WITH FAME ON FAERIE WINGS

What if I'm an ocean, far too shallow, much too deep? (...) What if I'm a siren singing gentlemen to sleep? (“What If”, 2003 🎵)
Soon, EA relocated from her native California to Chicago. There, in between odd jobs, she veered away from baroque and began performing her own “fantasy rock” stylings at piano bars, holiday fairs and local venues – and building a decent following through her LiveJournal, website, and IRL friends. People loved the whole renegade genius thing, loved the violin, loved the nightingale voice, loved the fairy wings and costumes🪞, loved the handmade merch and general disdain for The Business, loved her deadpan humor and bookish nerdiness. In 2003, she released her first LP, Enchant 🎵 – an ethereal, introspective indie-pop joint, born under the sign of Imogen Heap, with a moon in Fiona Apple and Tori Amos rising.
Everything about EA's act was exquisitely DIY, personal, and intricate. For instance, the Enchant booklet folded out into a Masquerade-style puzzle of her own design.🪞 The first person to solve the puzzle would win “the Wings, Ruff, Fan and Scepter of the Faerie Queene herself” – all lovingly handmade by EA, and depicted in peak 2003 graphic design on the booklet. For months, YEARS after Enchant came out, people poured over the cryptic metaphors and literary references, the historical symbolism and visual puns of the artwork, looking for hints and patterns. They read every fan chat, every interview, every relevant Shakespeare play, hoping to decipher the inner workings of EA's mind and find new keys to the puzzle. Sure, it's been two decades now and no one's ever managed to crack the damn thing 🔍, which is by now widely assumed to be flawed and unsolvable; still, it's the kind of zany, brainy, immersive experience that tends to cultivate a niche but hyper-invested fanbase.
So it makes perfect sense that underground aficionada and internet frontierswoman Courtney Love (she haunted public AOL chatrooms as early as 1995! 🔍) would take an interest. Just a few months after releasing Enchant, EA was off to southern France to record violin and vocals for Courtney's new solo album; a few months after that, in early 2004, she joined Courtney's band on a brief tour to promote the record.
Alas, no cigar: America's Sweetheart flopped. Maybe because most of those summer recording sessions were ultimately lost to an engineering oopsie; maybe because Courtney was having an especially rough year – and going through all the “rock-bottom moments” that she would discuss in group therapy, later that fall, when she began her sobriety journey at court-ordered rehab. EA, a former homeschool kid who had never done drugs, seems to remember the tour as a generally terrifying experience; she later stated, with some bitterness, that the experience was not worth the time it had taken away from her own solo career.
But it was a good year for TV appearances! Here she is on the David Letterman Show in March 2004, rocking out on a perfectly inaudible violin as C-Love fades in and out of her own body. 📺 She also landed a cute tutorial segment on HGTV's Crafters: Coast to Coast, making sushi-shaped soap and fairy wings. In December, she accompanied Billy Corgan for a Christmas song on a Chicago station.
All of this was chronicled in quirky, wordy posts on her blog – interspersed with late-night musings about casual misogyny in the media 📝, including against Courtney, handmade crafts and clothing auctions, candid pictures of outings with friends in Chicago... as well as periodic updates on the progress of her next opus: Opheliac.
God, too much to even begin to tell right now, and I’m recording anyway, but I can give you this update: I just finished yesterday recording violin parts and backing vocals for B. Corgan’s first single (...) More later, recording piano for my new track “GOD HELP ME”…why do I torture myself with my own self-inflicted drama…or is it a way of exorcizing…yes, I’ll go with that one for now…☠ (“Whirlwind...”, December 2004)
By that point, EA was starting to be more open about her conflicted relationship with what would later be diagnosed as bipolar disorder. The galaxy-brain moments, the trance of creative frenzies, the liminal high of going three days without sleep, the magic... the crippling sensitivity, the restless anxiety, the Zoloft that one both needs and hates, the ever-lurking suicidal thoughts. As EA gradually revealed over the course of 2004, Opheliac would be an exploration of the “mad woman” archetype. The title was a medical neologism for “the syndrome of Ophelia”, as in the tragic character from Hamlet 🔍, driven to insanity and ultimate self-destruction by the fuckboys who rule her life. Here's EA explaining it in her own words. 🎤 The album would dive into how psychiatry and romantic relationships are governed by old misogynistic tropes, and how the “mentally ill” label is used to silence and downplay the justified anger and hurt of abused women.
In a striking case of life imitating art (are you picking up on the theme yet?), this concept was about to become more painfully relevant than ever to EA's personal existence.
CW: implied partner abuse, suicidal ideation.

DISENCHANTMENT: A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

In the lake, you will find me Behind your house, behind your house (...) My ocean is bluer than the heart you had to break My sea is deeper than your lake (“In the Lake”, 2005 🎵)
Where were we? Ah yes, the Christmas song with Billy Corgan at the end of 2004. Around that time, EA was also recording violin parts and backing vocals for his upcoming solo album. 🎵 They had presumably connected through Courtney, they both lived in Chicago, I guess something clicked.
In January of 2005, EA abruptly went off of her meds, broke up with her live-in boyfriend-slash-bassist, packed up her violin and corsets, and moved into Corgan's mansion. In March of 2005, she posted very melancholy lyrics about drowning in a lake to haunt a deceitful lover. The post was entitled“In The Lake (The Zoloft is calling my name...)” 🎤📝. Later, after the song was released as a B-side, EA disclosed that it had been intended as a public suicide note 📝.
Blog entries from that time touched on a “whirlwind of action and emotion”, “changing residences” and feeling like “you're falling through the air, but you don't know if you'll hit the water or the rocks” 📝. But, EA being an expert vague-poster, her posts remained very elusive about what was going on, who was involved, and how it impacted her. (The specifics were pieced together years later, by fan-led forensic efforts – which, obviously, involved ascertaining the existence of an actual body of water in Billy Corgan's backyard 📝).
Whatever happened over the course of those months was never disclosed explicitly by EA, but is widely assumed to have inspired songs such as “Liar” 🎤, “Misery Loves Company”, “Let the Record Show”, and “I Know Where You Sleep”, , recorded that same spring. A solid quarter of the Opheliac tracklist – which was shaping out to be decidedly darker and grittier than Enchant.
You can lie to the papers, you can hide from the press (...) I know your tainted flesh, I know your filthy soul I know each trick you played, whore you laid, dream you stole I know the bed in the room in the wall in the house Where you got what you wanted and ruined it all I know the secrets that you keep I know where you sleep
Even as her personal blog posts grew more somber, nihilistic, and generally fed-up in the face of what she called “the worst breakdown of her young life”, even as the songwriting process had her rummage through traumatic memories [CW: CSA] 🎤, and even as the Corgan-adjacent trauma was compounded by various rushed moves and broken friendships over that summer and fall, EA remained remarkably (some might say frantically) prolific.
Other than progress on Opheliac, 2005 saw multiple violin collaborations with alternative bands, numerous auctions of, mh, visually strident “punktorian” fashion pieces 📝🪞 (“STRESS COUTURE!” 🦠📺), and an updated re-issue of her 2001 poetry collection, complete with audiobook. ("...The book has been selling like crack in a limo with Courtney Love (and believe me, I know)." - Ooooof, EA. Low-hanging fruit. 📝)
In October, she started recruiting:
WANTED: Hot goth bitch to join touring band of other hot goth bitches. (...) Must be able to: sing backing vocals in a wide range with excellent pitch, growl à la Kittie, handle minimal keyboard parts, push buttons/turn knobs with killer attitude, be extremely comfortable on stage in bloomers and a corset, reside in the Chicago area, know the difference between a crumpet and a scone, have at least one hidden talent. 📝
By winter, most of her blog post titles were written in THIS FORMAT!!!!!!!! In December, she announced that “Emilie Autumn and the Bloody Crumpets” would preview Opheliac live at the Double Door in Chicago, on Friday the 13th (ooh!) of the following month. “We are coming to destroy your world,” the post threatened enticingly. "Miss it and suffer. We really don't want to hurt you.” The flyer advertised a dress code:
Masquerade, Ophelias, green girls, Victorian insane asylum escapees, princes of Denmark, bloomered harlots and rogues – general burlesque ribaldry!
Exit diaphanous butterfly wings and elven tiaras 📺, enter the haunted murder-doll with the blood-red heart on her cheek; out with Elizabethan chamber-pop, in with Victoriandustrial. The fairy had to die to make way for the iconic, the sublime, the tragic, the ridiculous, the positively bananas...

OPHELIAC ERA: LET THE RECORD SHOW

EA: What's more interesting, and what's more fun to watch, than a crazy girl's self-destruction? Nothing. Nothing in the world. (The Opheliac Companion, 2008 🎤)
If I'm going down Then I'm going down good I'm going down Then I'm going down clean (...) The prettiest broken girl you've ever seen (“Let the Record Show”, 2006 🎵)
CW: mania, self-harm, abortion, suicidal ideation, hospitalization.
If you haven't gathered as much by now, what fans were witnessing in real time on EA's blog, without necessarily seeing it, was the ebb and flow of a months-long manic episode. That's not me armchair-diagnosing: EA herself has discussed penning and recording a lot of her best material in a trance-like rush, “when you're writing on the ceiling because there's not enough paper to contain your thoughts”.
...Once I became stable and healthy, I realized that I had no memory of how a great deal of my music had been created. I had written and even programmed most of my best work in a similar manic state, and, when stark raving sane, I didn’t know how to do it anymore, because the part of me that really composes never needed to know how to do it, it just did. (2019 Instagram post 📝)
It's not an uncommon experience for artists with bipolar disorder. Before you burn so hot that you wind up in the back of an ambulance, and/or before the pendulum swings back towards debilitating depression, the boundless energy, heightened sensitivity, and unexpected thought patterns associated with mania can lead to periods of prolific and effortless creation.
Mania also has the potential to lower your inhibitions, making you more bodacious, more quick-witted – more dazzling, more fun at parties, more dramatic. All traits that are valued in the entertainment industry, especially one that, with the rise of social media, was coming to rely increasingly on parasocial engagement and “personal branding”. Why would you refrain from oversharing, overreacting, overworking, overpromising, overcurating a fantasy image of yourself... when new industry models reward exactly that?
My point is that, in retrospect, “the end was built into the beginning”: all the things that would make fans go “What the hell, Emilie!” in subsequent years were brewing below the surface before the album even dropped.
In the summer of 2006, EA said goodbye to her Chicago friends and returned to California, where she moved in with her new beau, another Illinois-born guitarist with an impressive forehead: Brendon Small, of Dethklok/Metalocalypse quasi-fame. (If you're into that sort of thing: the orchestral strings on “Detharmonic”? Yep, that's EA! 🎵📺)
In September, Opheliac was released into the world. Expectations were high... And many sources agree it was a goddamn banger. It was ultrafemme, ultradark, unhinged, hilarious and deadly and brilliant. It had gnarly kitchen-sink drums layered under angelic string harmonies, fauxperatic swells, and guttural screaming. It had sarcastically self-aware double-entendres that were also literary references that were also musical notation jokes. You get the idea: it was the album that a small, but sizable demographic of tormented millennial teens had been waiting to obsess over. Some time in late 2005 or so, EA had signed with German label Trisol Records, which gave her access to better promotion, press coverage and touring opportunities in Europe when the album came out in the fall. By winter, she was on the cover of alternative mags, and the talk of the town on underground music webzines. Within a year, she was embarking on the first of three almost-back-to-back European tours.
It was around that time that EA started giving her fanbase a more defined, aesthetically on-brand identity. EA, funnily enough, disliked the term “fan” due to its proximity to “fanatic”, and started calling individual supporters “muffins” or the "Bloomer Brigade". (After The Book came out in 2009, they would become “Plague Rats”. You know how pets get weird if you re-name them too many times? I wonder if the same is true of fans.) Meanwhile, EA's fanbase as a collective – as well as her home, her recording studio, her online forum and her inner brainspace... – became canonically known as “The Asylum”. Cue infinite jokes about her fans being “committed.”
And they really were, in a slightly more intense way than your average indie-alternative fanbase. Many fans enthusiastically adopted facets of EA's mannerisms and lingo, which gave the fandom a definite LARP-ing bend; and the official forum did, in fact, offer a subforum for Asylum-themed role-play. (In a number of ways, the Asylum was basically Juggalos for socially anxious theater goths. Substitute the clown facepaint, Faygo, and hatchets for cheek-hearts, Earl Grey tea, and obsolete medical tools.) While there was always some side-eye at the embarrassingly candid, often very young Plague Rats who took the Asylum thing too seriously (always speaking in character and worshipping the ground Mistress Emilie walked on), a lot of people were quite thrilled to play romantic Victorian madhouse with their new favorite artist. Live shows were like costume balls. The forum thrived.
It was like Opheliac had opened a portal to this vibrant and inclusive alternate dimension, which the community was now bringing to life in the real world. And each tour brought more inmates (muffins, Plague Rats, you get it) to the Asylum. “Spread the Plague!” was the name of the game.
So, on paper, in the three years that followed Opheliac, EA kind of won the high-concept-indie-artist equivalent of the lottery. After going through her own personal hell of abuse, major upheavals and serious mental health crises, she had decided to gamble on a radically different tone and musical direction. She came out the other side with critical acclaim for her soul-baring record, tons of live shows with a badass girl squad, photoshoots so iconic they pop up on random Pinterest boards to this day, snazzy corporate sponsorships (including Manic Panic and RockLove Jewelry), and an exponentially growing fanbase who couldn't get enough of whatever she had to give. And she gave quite a lot!
Within those three years, in between tours, EA released A Bit O' This & That 🎵 (a compilation of demos and back-catalogue curiosities), Laced / Unlaced (a full-instrumental double album - one side was the baroque recordings from her late teens, the other was demented, distortion-heavy classical-prog), and three EPs packed with new songs, covers, remixes and bonus content. There was also a deluxe reissue of Enchant, without the puzzle, but with a brand new booklet of handwritten lyrics and marginalia. All came in lovely inter-matching digipaks that really made you want to collect them all – much like the handmade merch 📝🪞 that EA still sold on some legs of her tours. She spent time with the fans at most shows, eventually holding meet-and-greets and private showcases for VIP ticket-holders. She also released “The Opheliac Companion”, a kind of “director's commentary” of the album – roughly 10 hours worth of lyrical deep dives, microphone specs, tangents within tangents within tangents, and whacky (tipsy, sometimes unintelligible) banter between EA and her sound engineer🎤. On top of all that, she wrote, designed and self-published a fully illustrated 200-page coffee-table book, the first print of which sold out within a year. Not bad!
Of course, things that seem to good to be true usually are: at this stage in the story, EA is never as enthusiastically prolific as when her personal life is falling apart behind the scenes.
In the three years that followed Opheliac, along with soaring success, EA got to experience: more rapid-cycling between manic phases and the pits of depression, multiple harrowing medication adjustments, an very-much-unwanted pregnancy followed by a traumatic abortion, a suicide attempt, at least one inpatient stay, and a break-up in the aftermath of it all. There were also a few physical health scares that required hospitalization. On one occasion, she had to go off all her meds cold-turkey when they were confiscated at the EU border right before the start of a tour. In some pictures from her summer 2007 festival appearances, you can make out faint self-harm scars on her thigh through the layered stockings. (Obvious CW, for the morbidly curious.🪞(But if you weren't, would you still be reading?))
So yeah. EA was not doing great.
She didn't share any of these struggles with her fans in real time; her posts were all droll banter and updates on tours and releases. Most of what I just listed was disclosed in late 2009, in the autobiographical part of The Book. (The Book gets at least one instalment of its own. Bear with me, there's a LOT to unpack.) And The Book, while never specifying a timeline, kind of really made it sound like the Bad Stuff (the abortion, the suicide attempt, the hospital stay) had taken place a while back, before the release of Opheliac. In fact, EA plainly stated as much, citing “getting locked up and being put in the asylum" 📝 as the reason for the shift in sound between Enchant and Opheliac.
She repeatedly referred to herself as “stabilized” and “now properly medicated” in interviews. As far as the fanbase was concerned, she had triumphed over her abusers, turned trauma into beauty, and lived to pass on her story of survival. And now she had found balance and community and true acceptance of herself, all that good stuff – and all was fine and dandy within the Asylum. On stage, she sang about blind rage and all-consuming despair and general hopelessness, but she didn't actually feel like that – not anymore, right?
This narrative was both inspirational and quite convenient for the fans. We love our Mad Hatters 🎵📺, our Rainmen, our manic pixies. We love and celebrate “crazy” when it manifests as outside-the-box brilliance and/or bubbly eccentricity. But in my experience, even in spaces that ostensibly focus on "destigmatizing mental illness", positivity and support can quickly turn to rejection and awkwardness when your “quirks” manifest in more challenging ways – like through erratic decisions, aggressive or dishonest behavior, or increasingly untethered beliefs about yourself and the world. No matter how much people claim to “embrace the madness”, it just isn't that fun or in good taste for a large group to play-act ~ whimsical insanity ~ with someone who is for realsies mentally falling apart.
Before time has had time to do its thing, "revisiting your trauma" is just called ruminating. And it's rarely good for you, even when you commit some of greatest art in the process.
I think fans had to assume that there was some critical distance in EA's act, that these extreme negative emotions were all theater – because if they weren't, then the Asylum wasn't an empowering performance about healing from past hurt. It was more like a years-long reality show in which a woman picked at her wounds publicly, again and again, in real time, to the cheers of oblivious strangers who thought they were watching a play.
All I'm saying is that EA was essentially still in the thick of raw trauma when she became a poster-child for overcoming it; that the last thing a person needs, at such a vulnerable stage in their life, is an intense parasocial relationship with sad goth teenagers, let alone one centered around romanticized retellings of their own darkest moments; and that if more people had declined to actively engage in pretend-play that toed the line of self-harm... there is a chance that things might have turned out differently. Maybe EA would still be a successful musician whose career isn't plagued by conflict and mutual disappointment, and maybe some fans wouldn't have wasted years getting red in the face at an over-exposed mentally ill woman for not getting her shit together.
OKAY, THAT GOT HEAVY (and preachy), apologies and thank you for your patience. I will now quit my soapboxing, resume telling the story, and let you draw your own conclusion as our dark plot unravels.

EPILOGUE: DEAD IS THE NEW ALIVE

A quick taste of the poison A quick twist of the knife When the obsession with death, the obsession with death Becomes a way of life ("Dead is the New Alive", 2006 🎵)
I am still over-glorified My reasons to live Were my reasons to die But at least they were mine (“306”, 2006)
In summation: becoming an overnight success thanks to your darkest trauma will do things to person's mind.
As EA kept hyping up how much her fans meant to her, and what an amazing and inclusive and free-thinking motley crew the Asylum was, she was also growing more and more controlling of her increasingly large (and opinionated, and overall rather young) fanbase – and more generally, of the way people ought to talk to and about her.
It was during the Opheliac era that she started reveling in made-up stories about her own life. Then came the habit of losing her shit on fans that she perceived as ungrateful or disrespectful. It was also then that massive kerfuffles became routine on the merch and planning front, and EA's creative output started to routinely fall short of her promises. The more fans started raising legitimate complaints, the more defensive and uncompromising EA became in her public interactions. The more people expressed weariness of the Asylum theme, or started questioning EA's hot takes on mental health and feminism, the harder she doubled down on the Asylum lore and fictional universe. Which is where the drama really starts.
Alright, the time has come. Let's talk about The Book.
...Actually, let's not. I'm nearing my character limit, and you could probably use a break and a stretch after making it this far. This is our intermission, and we'll get to The Book in our next instalment.
Thank you for reading! Stay tuned if you're interested in how it all comes tumbling down.

2024.04.28 17:53 Fireoa- This couple makes $150k/year (Net) with reinvented cotton candy

Edit: A commenter has made accusations about this product and I want to clear the air. This product is NOT a health food nor is he claiming it is. He uses superior ingredients which give his cotton candy a much better taste/texture. In his own words:
Probably 95%+ cotton candy is going to be made using the cheapest sugar you can buy, such as beet sugar or your basic great value walmart bag of sugar. Its sugar, mixed with a tablespoon or two of gold medal "flossine" which has next to no discernable taste.
Here's what makes ours different:
We have worked on sourcing the best tasting flavor extracts, powders, and concentrates for each of our flavors. We source our ingredients from about a dozen different companies.
Lastly we use a proprietary process when we make our sugar that actually changes the texture from the typical gritty feeling of cotton candy, to a silky soft cotton candy that retains its shape, and is overall more pleasant to consume.
Several weeks ago I introduced you to Clark, the entrepreneur making $1Mill/year by selling cell phone service to the Amish (you can read that story here: (https://www.reddit.com/Entrepreneucomments/1bevev5/this_guy_makes_over_1million_a_year_by_selling/utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
If you enjoyed that interview, I think you’ll dig this story about Chris, the entrepreneur making boatloads of money with his own cotton candy recipe.
Basically, Chris always had the entrepreneurial itch but like many people, he lacked the confidence to create his own business.
He shares how he created that confidence and how he found validation in his idea when he sold $25,000 in product in just over a week.
A few takeaways in this interview:
This is the shorter version of the interview that I’ve optimized for Reddit. If you’d like to read the full story (which includes a look at his expenses and marketing) you can do so, here.

Please, introduce yourself and your business.

My name is Chris, and my business name is Cloud Candy Co! I'm out to 'disrupt' the concessions industry as it were, and turn cotton candy from a pink/blue flavorless garbage sweet for kids, into a decadent dessert enjoyed by all ages! Most cotton candy is made using the cheapest ingredients possible or from premade cartons. We have come up with our own unique recipe that drastically changes the texture and flavor of cotton candy. Instead of gritty/sticky, our cotton candy is silky, light, and not overly sweet. I really believe we have the most superior product on the market! Eventually I'd like to replace regular cotton candy at large venues (looking at you Moda Center.)

How did you start your business?

At age 17 I jumped into sales and for the next 10 years I helped both startups and small businesses exponentially grow. Taking some businesses from 4 to 6 figures, and other businesses from 5 to 7 figures annually. Quite frankly, with each of these businesses I worked for, I noticed the same pattern of owners essentially taking advantage of me. Reneging on things like financial compensation, or sometimes just making plain bad decisions. Often it felt like I was just following a trail of business owners constantly choosing to do things the hardest way possible and when it didn't work out for them, they would find someone to blame (mostly me). After helping others for so long I decided to start my own thing. Cotton candy on the outside seems like a weird choice and sometimes I get funny looks. On the inside though, this is a product that has tremendous margins, allows me to express my creativity with our flavors, has relatively low competition, and allows me to provide decent paying jobs to people I care about.

How much revenue was your best year? (include margin if possible)

Within 12 months from our first event we made just shy of $100,000 at around $97,000 in revenue. Our profit margins are pretty hefty, usually at 85%+ for retail depending on if we are selling fresh spun or prepackaged. Although I have reinvested most of our profits back into the company for various revenue channels and to pay off accrued debt. This year we are on track for $175,000~ and I think we will exponentially grow as we become more solidified in our area as a catering option as well as grow our ecommerce channels.

When did you notice traction when building your business? The “Oh S**t!” moment, what did that feel like?

We managed to luck out, our very first event we joined as a vendor was a county fair and we generated $26,000 in revenue within 10-11 days. This was with us doing all this for the very first time. I had to hire 9 people to operate the event, and the fair themselves took a 25% gross sales cut (This sounds very ew, but it pales in comparison to what we would pay if we could get into the local stadiums, who take 50% of gross sales up front) So right from the start, I realized this had big potential. People were responding really well to our product and our branding. I think our type of product is endemic to social media right now and so far we have already seen decent conversion rates and reorder rates in ecommerce.

How many attempts at building something did you make before you found what you’re working on now? Did you always have an entrepreneurial drive?

I tried building my own company probably 5-6 times. I co-owned a branding agency, I tried dropshipping back in 2014-15 and a few other ventures. I have certainly always had the entrepreneurial drive, although I lacked a lot of confidence in myself before 2021 basically. You mention a lack of self confidence.

What event or action did you take to get that confidence to build your business?

So, here's the main thing that really gave me the confidence to start my own thing. I was hired to do the marketing for a small business at the end of 2019. I didn't really get to do much because come 2020 covid hit and shut the business down till about Feb of 2021.
When we came back, the business was in tons of debt and was pretty much on the verge of failing. I worked out a compensation plan with the owner that scaled with the growth of the business. I was the 'marketing director' but I ended up taking on many different roles. I became the IT, marketing, sales, project manager, customer service, graphic designer and office admin. It really pushed me to expand and fully utilize my skill set.
I helped them essentially rebuild everything from the ground up. New marketing funnels, new CRM, follow up protocols, introducing new products etc. The numbers really speak for themselves. They were a student enrollment based business.
The start of 2021 we started at like 90-100 active students, by the end of the year I had gotten them to 1100 active students. Pre covid rev numbers were abt 300 k annually and In 2021 I had helped them hit 1.3 million.I even initiated and led an expansion to add a 2nd location. 2022 rev was like 1.6 mil. By the time I left I looked at the reports and essentially I had helped them attain 30 months of month after month growth.
So after that experience, it really helped give me the proof that I truly knew what I was doing. And from there I basically asked myself " hey if I can help this business make a million, maybe I can do that for myself"

What’s a big problem you’ve faced as a business owner and what were the emotions behind it?

Oh man, well to be honest we encountered a problem that maybe a lot of other businesses haven't? When we first opened our brick and mortar, it was at the local mall. We were excited to be planting our roots down. The back of our unit had a space that doubled as a commercial kitchen space, so the plan was to get that space certified, get the proper licensing to be able to sell online, and grow both the front facing space in the local community. The first few months we were even in the black! Unfortunately a cascading chain of bad interactions with another business owner in front of our shop led to a dangerous and insane situation where my employees (2 of which were my sister and fiance, the other which was a 18 yr old girl) were being stopped and harassed by this other business owner. Tragically, I had to watch people I cared about be violently threatened and verbally abused/harassed by another business owner. Eventually after about 2 months of trying to work with mall management to rectify this situation (they were not very helpful) we had to escalate this legally. That began another month or two of court cases trying to get protection orders. I watched as the other person's attorney tried to drag my family's names and reputation through the mud, I had to watch people I loved and cared about go through a tremendous amount of suffering. Then I had to make a decision between them and the business. It wasn't like I could just hire new people and make them go through the same level of harassment. I made a difficult decision to take the financial hit and cancel our lease. We won the protection orders, and I took on an incredible amount of debt. The emotions behind that? Fear for my sister and fiancés life, disbelief at the situation I was in, regret that I had ever got into the B&M in the first place, anger at the people who stood by and took advantage of the situation, self-doubt that I was making the right decision by closing. To me, a business wasn't worth that amount of suffering, and Ironically a business that I had started because I thought it was fun and inoffensive, turned into a bittersweet nightmare briefly. We shut our location down, and for another 6 months or so we did basically nothing with the business as we took time to heal. In those 6 months I really debated on continuing on with this or not. Eventually I decided to get back into it and go for it full time. Honestly, I'm really happy I did. The past 2 years since that awful situation have been full of really good moments, and I really believe in my business. We are still working through the debt we accrued, but I am very hopeful for the future.

What is your best advice for someone who feels completely stuck?

My biggest pieces of advice: -Be confident in your actions and decisions, even if they end up being bad ones. It's impossible to be perfect, you are going to make mistakes. Self-doubt is a killer. If you start doubting your actions, that's when you'll sink. -Eventually at some point you have to make the jump, and sink or swim. Having a business plan is great and all, unfortunately a lot of plans don't survive contact with reality. Take your ego out of it, and be ready to pivot. -If you can, find someone like minded to talk to. Whether it's a mentor type figure, another business owner, or even going to some local networking events. You can get validation for your idea, guidance on how to start in your market, a lot of people love to help others. Lastly there's a quote that I think about often I feel is somewhat apt for people building a business. 'There are years where nothing happens; and there are weeks where years happen.' Sometimes you grind and grind, yet still feel stuck. You feel like nothing is happening, and then suddenly, you hit a breakthrough and a cascade of success happens. You see that all the effort you put in actually DID payoff. Use that high as momentum to propel yourself forward. In those slow moments, just trust yourself and keep doing the work.
