So Tell Me Everything Is Not About Speak Now, But What If It Is? Album Cover and Album Prologue
Well, well, well! That was quite the mash up on N1 in Scotland 👀
I had something else queued up to write next but after that performance, I knew I had to come back to this series!
BTW, If you didn't know that I'm writing a series about Speak Now, and you want to find my other posts, you can click on my name to find them.
In my last post, I realize that i got ahead of myself because I said I’d be doing a song analysis next, but I actually want to talk about the album cover and prologue first.
Disclaimer#1: A lot of what I’m going to write about is what I think happened, not what I’m saying 100% happened. I’m happy to hear other interpretations or if you disagree, that is fine too!
Disclaimer #2: Taylor is an unreliable narrator. That has been established in many different ways, in many different contexts, and with many different examples. If you think something couldn’t have happened because of something Taylor said about an album, or song, I urge you to go back and read the first sentence from this disclaimer.
Disclaimer #3: I have adhd so I’m very likely going to make spelling/grammar mistakes - please accept my apology is advance for that. And for my overuse of commas.(My apology as well for all the additional context my adhd is going to give you in parentheses throughout this post).
Disclaimer #4: I decided not to venture into the ethics of creating public narratives about public people and then packaging that up for your fans to eat up like Taylor likes to do. There is a time and a place for that conversation, but the focus on my Speak Now writing is about might have happened. I also have a hard time having sympathy for John Mayer or Jake Gyllenhaal who agreed to the appearance of dating a much younger woman - which is gross and should not be normalized. Did she cross a line at times - like with Joe Jonas’s ex - maybe, but she was 18-20 when she did this and had no idea where things would end up with her easter eggs. Plus if she felt cornered by her label and the music industry, I have sympathy for that.
At some point, my posts are going to be nothing but disclaimers lmao.
Album front and back cover

Front cover

Back cover
The first thing that stands out to me is the yellow dress of it all.
If Speak Now is the album that started her forced closeting, then the appearance of the yellow dress (when Fearless had yellow themes), is…interesting.
Fun fact: But I’m a Cheerleader (the movie that a lot of people think introduced the concept of yellow as a closeting color to Taylor) was released in 1999.
Fun fact that I’m introducing for no reason whatsoever 👀: The episode of Mad Men that uses the term “lavender haze” aired on October 19, 2008
Purple has a long history in the queer and lesbian community. The most obvious being lavender which is not the purple on the cover.
Fun colour fact: There is a lavender purple.
According to this article, the designer for the original Speak Now dress describes it as a “strapless violet ballgown” 👀
Violet is often associated with lesbians
Violets have been associated with lesbian love since the 6th century, thanks to the work of the greek poet Saphho, from the isle of Lesbos. Much of her poetry centered around the relationships and love between women, who she often described as wearing garlands of the flowers and other plants.
The bisexual.) flag also uses purple
The pink color represents sexual attraction to the same sex only (gay and lesbian). The blue represents sexual attraction to the opposite sex only (straight) and the resultant overlap color purple represents sexual attraction to both sexes (bi).
Yet another fun colour fact: red and blue (which makes purple when mixed together) were the colour choices for Taylor’s next albums after Speak Now
Album Prologue
https://preview.redd.it/opv4qw13jd5d1.jpg?width=1022&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3cc9b8173a9be55ed7dd2e8dcc29c8fc9dea9c98
When I first looked at the prologue artwork I thought it looked like a pride flag, but then I realized that it’s missing purple. Taylor being dressed in purple on the cover then finishes the pride flag.
Maybe this is the first example of Taylor literally flagging what she really felt.
The way I approached the album prologue and subsequent song analysis is to look at the text without taking into account the romantic nature of the songs that Taylor tells us is there. Like I said at the beginning of the post, Taylor is an unreliable narrator and her public narratives have for a lot of people, become such a part of analyzing her work.
I’ve bolded what I want to emphasize.
Back then, Taylor did not speak her truth. Like Laura Dern says in the Bejeweled mv “Speak Not!” and I think that line is in that video for a reason because that is what Taylor did during this time.
I really hope she takes the chance to speak her truth now.
Speak now or forever hold your peace, the words said by preachers at the end of wedding ceremonies all over the world, right before the rows. It's a last chance for protest, a moment that makes everyone's heart race, and a moment I've always been strangely fascinated by. So many fantasize about bursting into a church, saying what they'd kept inside for years like in the movie. In real life, it rarely happens.
Ouch ouch ouch. Looking at these words today, knowing what happened post Speak Now hurts. I can’t imagine then what it feels like to Taylor - especially when she revisited this album and everything else that might have happened during the rerecording process.
Real life is a funny thing, you know. In real life, saying the right thing at the right moment is beyond crucial. So crucial, in fact, that most of us start to hesitate, for fear of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. But lately what I’ve begun to fear more than that is letting the moment pass without saying anything.
I think most of us fear reaching the end of our life, and looking back regretting the moments we didn't speak up.
When we didn't say 'I love you! When we should've said 'I'm sorry. When we didn't stand up for ourselves or someone who needed help.
The pain continues lol. But besides that, she doesn’t assign gender to her first love (while in the sentence before making reference to a boy whose heart she broke).
I think is Scott B. is the mean man and the someone who made her world dark for a while
What catches my attention most of all is “the girl who stole something of mine." Without the public narrative of BTR, that line can be read very differently. It could potentially tie to Dear John and an older woman - which isn’t my read on the song, but my interpretation isn’t the truth. Especially when some people think Dear John and ATW have connections.
It can also be read as the girl stealing her heart. Which is what I thought as soon as I read that line. What stops a lot of other people from seeing the line as possibly queer, is that they feel they already know what Taylor is talking about. So they don’t actually read what she writes. They rely on public stories to do their analysis.
These songs are made up of words I didn't say when the moment was right in front of me. These songs are open letters. Each is written with a specific person in mind, telling them what I meant to tell them in person. To the beautiful boy whose heart I broke in December. To my first love who I never thought would be my first heartbreak. To my band. To a mean man I used to be afraid of. To someone who made my world very dark for a while. To a girl who stole something of mine. To someone I forgive for what he said in front of the whole world.
The first line, I take as directed at Scott B and in this case, it’s not something that Taylor said to him, I think she is writing about what was said to her by Scott B.
The second line I bolded is what I believe encompasses so much from the Speak Now era. Taylor wanted to tell her truth, she planned to tell her truth, but then never got the chance. And I think she is haunted by that choice. We hear that over and over again throughout Taylor’s discography, especially since folklore.
Personally, I have spent a lot of time hating myself for the choices I made when I was young - which isn’t fair, I know, I’m in therapy lol - and given how much bigger in a lot of ways, Taylor’s choices were at this age, I can see why she might be struggling with self loathing as well.
Words can break someone into a million pieces, but they can also put them back together. I hope you use yours for good, because the only words you'll regret more than the ones left unsaid are the ones you use to intentionally hurt someone.
What you say might be too much for some people. Maybe it will come out all wrong and you'll stutter and you'll walk away embarrassed, wincing as you play it all back in your head. But I think the words you stop yourself from saying are the ones that will haunt you the longest.
I mentioned in last SN post that I think the concept for the OG Karma album started with Speak Now. The first line I highlighted makes me hope that she has also been planning a tell book on what she’s endured through the music industry since Speak Now as well. I mentioned this in a comment recently, in the LWYMMD mv, when she supposedly mocks Kim K by saying she’s “keeping receipts”, I want to believe that is a warning to Scott B/Scootethe music industry.
And it also feels like she’s saying she knows she can’t speak now, so she is going to wait for her turn, even if that isn’t what she wanted to do or hoped to do.
So say it to them. Or say it to yourself in the mirror. say it in a letter you'll never send or in a book millions might read someday. I think you deserve to look back on your life without a chorus of resounding voices saying I could’ve, but it's too late now.
There is a time for silence. There is a time waiting your turn. But if you know how you feel, and you so clearly know what you need to say, you'll know it. I don't think you should wait. I think you should speak now.
love,
Taylor
PS: To al the boys who inspired this album, you should’ve known. :)
If Taylor has been planning to come out at various points from Speak Now onwards, I do not believe she will give that plan up even with all the roadblocks and pain along the way.
I just can’t see a world where she will lets everyone who kept her in the closet get away with that.
I’ve shared this quote before when I’ve written about Taylor, but it definitely fits here too. Taylor said this in 2022 at the Tribeca Festival, and I feel like it was a warning to those who think they've won.
And also think that Taylor will stay in the closet forever, or won’t Speak Now about what has happened to her
People greatly underestimate me on how much I’ll inconvenience myself to prove a point if I think I'm right.

2024.06.08 11:46 Far_Ad_7987 Leaving the Church

Friend,
I click baited you. I probably won't be leaving the church. But I am being torn up by some people in the church, namely young earth creationists. My dilemma is the biblical lineages and evolution. How do you reconcile these? The following question races in my mind in some form or other, very frequently: "Catholics are allowed to believe an allegorical interpretation of Genesis/creation. Okay, but Adam and Eve must be believed to be real. Okay, perhaps they are real, in that the story really represents the ensoulment of humans, and the gaining of our hyper-rational souls, distinct from the animal kingdom. OK. What about the narratives about their offspring, Cain, Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, etc. Did they exist as written, or are the genealogies themselves metaphorical? I suppose that is what naturally/logically follows church teaching about the nature of the genesis narratives.. OK. What about Christ's lineage? In my mind this is where the rubber meets the road. Are these genealogies metaphorical here as well? Writing this now, I see how this could be so, and honestly just working this thought out in this text block now is enlightening and like lifting a weight off my shoulders. The rub to me seems to be that Christ seems so historical, and the genealogies don't seem that way-at least not in the same vein that Christ is.. It seems like the authors wanted to make sure we knew these lineages. Are they history, though? Jesus of Nazareth, in my mind, has to have historicity. I can't believe something without good reason or evidence. I am convinced of God from the unmoved mover & first cause argument, sort of the impossibility of an infinite regression of causes, metaphysically speaking. I believe in Jesus Christ as is represented in the Gospels because of historical reasoning. I find Dr. Gary Habermas' resurrection work quite compelling specifically when he lectured at University of California Santa Barbara (link to youtube video lecture here). I suppose the genealogies could be metaphouseful myth/allegory.. I just question if this is church teaching. If this isn't permitted by the church, then this is obviously a problem. This would lead to a young-earth creationist position & rejection of modern cosmology, along with much more of the significant historical insight that the scientific method brings (the same method that has brought us to knowledge of a 4.543 billion year old Earth, the same that through fossil analysis and DNA suggest people looking like us, anatomically modern Homo sapiens, evolved around 300,000 years ago, and the same science that wrought the very screen that you are reading this on). Pope Pius XII's encyclical Humani Generis ("Of the Human Race") stated that Catholic teachings on creation could coexist with evolutionary theory. So then the genealogies must be metaphor. Because if they are literal, than the earth is young (5000 years) and the scientific method is false... How can that make any sense? It literally destroys sense. "[science is] a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses." To me, science is the pursuit of knowledge and truth through the use of reason. Literal genealogies make the earth young, disproving the modern scientific method which has brought us to the moon and cars and heat and smart watches and processed food and disconnectedness-it has done both good and bad, science has, however, it certainly has done something. But young earth/literal genealogies causes us to abandon the modern scientific method, which has given us results. Science has done wonders. But literal genealogies and a young earth cause us to abandon reason, because, unless I'm absolutely bonkers, this formula is more or less true: reason = science. Science is observing, hypothesizing, testing, concluding. From these conclusions, we can manipulate God's creation, blending into a very intricate, detailed concoction, the very laws of reality to conform to our will and desire. How can you deny that? I struggle to. In no uncertain terms...
Science seems legit.
So the genealogies must be metaphoallegory/religious-spiritual poetry. Then we get a rigorous, scientific method, and we also get to have Christ, who is living history. He is alive in Heaven, at the right hand of the Father, from where he shall return to Judge. The Resurrection is the event, then, that inspired the entire canon of the new testament and the birth of the church proper. I believe this is the only logical way.
I pray I am not lost, and that I am going where the Father has sent me, and that my questions are good and deep and thought provoking and intense and necessary, for my growth as well as the rest of you all, my brothers and sisters in the Mystical Body. God bless you all.

2024.06.08 11:31 SerovGaming1962 Of Sinners and Shades - A Genshin Megatheory or something like that lmao (Idk what to flair this as since there is so many topics mashed into one, but I picked the most relevant one I think.)

Tl;dr In a alternate universe the Sumeru AQ was about rescuing our granddaughter.
I’d like to begin this analysis, comparison, and narrative speculation with a few words that seem unrelated at first but BELIEVE ME will be important later in this post…
I FUCKING TOLD YOU SURTALOGI WAS RELATED TO THE SINNER AND Y’ALL DIDN’T BELIEVE ME LETS FUCKING GOOOO EVEN THOUGH I WAS ONLY HALF RIGHT IM STILL GOING TO FUCKING GLOAT ABOUT THIS!!!!!! (for context just go check the first time I say Sutr on my account)
Ok with my ego trip over, let me describe the aims of this theory. (From this point forward, consider all egotripping and narcissism as humor because that is what it is.)
  1. THE IDENTITY OF THE SIBLINGS.
The siblings that traveled the stars, Aether and Lumine. We know em, we love em, or atleast we think we do.
The actual origins of the twins are a mystery to us, and their true role within the plot remains unclear. I, however, believe I found the answer to it all. The truth that shakes the very foundation of the story, the characters, the hierarchy of Teyvat, and people’s shitty Primordial One = evil genocidal colonizing dictator headcanons.
I believe, The Traveler and maybe the Abyss Twin… are none of than The Master of the 4 Shades, the Sovereign of Sovereigns, the God-King in the sky, The one who also goes by the name of Phanes… THE PRIMORDIAL ONE, THE PROGENITOR GOD HAILING FROM BEYOND THE STARS.
Now to most of you, I’ve lost it. I’ve actually gone insane, but once I’m finished with this section of the post I’m convinced this will at least become a major competing theory and I will convert many of you.
So, first off. How? How in Istaroth’s name did I even get to this conclusion? Truth is I don’t remember, except that the pieces just seemed to click together to me one day in school.
So what are these pieces you may ask?
First off the Traveler can be both male or female, with both exhibiting traits of the other (Aether having long hair while Lumine having shorter hair for example). This is a representation of the androgynous nature of Phanes as mentioned in Before Sun and Moon. Their names, Aether and Lumine, also both have relations to light. The concept of Aether as a some sort of material or tangible thing was used to explain the propagation of light, his Chinese and Japanese names, Kong and Sora respectively, mean sky and light technically comes from the sky or is atleast propagated BY it. Lumine is an obsolete verb to illuminate. Her Chinese name, Ying, means glow and her Japanese name, Hotaru, means firefly and guess what fireflies do? They produce LIGHT. (translations for the Chinese and Japanese names are from the Genshin wiki.) Their strange original power also seems to be connected to light in some way. The twins also share The Primordial One’s love for Humanity, but strangely only the Traveler seems to share this empathy to the gods and curiously enough the Dragons. More on that later.
You may saying, “ok you just proved something we already know, how does it prove they are related to Phanes?”. Well that’s the thing, the name Phanes is the name of the Greek god of… get this… LIGHT!!!!
But that’s just superficial compared to this next part. We all know the gods of Teyvat have named derived from the Ars Goetia and the demons in it. Well this even applies to the Shining Shades themselves as Istaroth is derived from Astaroth and The Sustainer’s name, which while not officially said is in the game files and idk if this counts as a leak or not given it’s literally in the game last time I checked, is Asmoday which comes from Asmodeus. So following this trend of demonic gods logically the Sovereign of Sovereigns themself would follow this trend, with the only name fitting their stature being the name of the ruler of Hell. Lucifer, which… funnily enough means… ‘Light-bringer’. Now to make a tangent that will quickly loop back around to the main topic, you also probably know Paimon is in the Ars Goetia, and that they are one of the most loyal demons. Loyal to who? Lucifer. Who is Paimon most loyal to in the game? The Traveler… Isn’t that funny?
Oh and now for the delusional rambling part. Ok so you know how in the one world quest with Liloupar, the aforementioned Jinn implied we resemble King Deshret? Well King Deshret is describe as a “Son of the Sky”, which seems like just a cool moniker until you combine it with the above and the implications of our resemblance to the Lord of the Blazing Sun. Yeah I’m saying King Deshret is our child. This also means that if Deshret liked a certain other girl in his friend group instead of Nabu Malikata then Nahida would have been our granddaughter or something like that.
Now, this is all fine and good but I can hear you mumbling to yourself. “B-But Isn’t the Primordial One in Celestia??? Aren’t they the big bad because everyone has been telling us they’re bad from just one point of view???”. The answer is elementary my dear reader, The Primordial One is not the one in charge currently.
  1. THE TRUE ORDER OF TEYVAT.
First let me answer the Hydro Dragon shaped elephant in the room, just because Neuvillette says the Primordial One is sitting upon the throne in the sky does NOT mean he is correct. Neuvillette has a very good chance of being DEAD WRONG given that he has no way to just go up and check himself and having to rely on hearsay from his fellow Dragons to know what’s-what, and with what I’m about to say.
What am I about to say? I’m saying Phanes was overthrown and all of Teyvat is being LIED to.
Before Sun and Moon HEAVILY implies that The Primordial One did not win the war despite the author saying otherwise, else they would have assisted in bringing Enkanomiya back up to the surface instead of for some reason banning them from returning to the surface.
Like seriously this makes no sense and is out of character for the Primordial One given we know he loved humanity. He fought the Sovereigns so humanity could live on Teyvat.
So what happened?I believe Phanes was lied to and betrayed. By who? The Second Who Came and noneother than The Sustainer herself. I can already hear you questioning, “B-But you said Phanes lost the war??? How could the SWC have come to power through lies and betrayal instead?”. Dear reader, I never said WHICH WAR. We’re getting ahead of ourselves with that part though so let’s focus on this.
After the War of the Second Who Came, Phanes showed mercy to them. Why do I think this? Well they have shown mercy to the Dragons who they could have completely wiped out if they wanted, and despite the fact the Dragons likely would not have shared the same sentiment to them. So it’s not out of character for them to show mercy. The SWC took this opportunity to play a different game to seize the throne of Celestia which they very much desired. Despite winning Phanes was wounded after the war, this much is apparent.
– QUICK TANGENT BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW HOW TO COMFORTABLY INTRODUCE THIS: It’s possible that Phanes could have even been split between Aether and Lumine during this moment, and I say they split as Lucifer, at least by the Greek name Phosphorus, was also used to refer to Venus. However the Greeks thought Venus to be two very different celestial bodies. The Morning Star and The Evening Star, Phosphorus and Hephestus, Lucifer and Vesper. Two, yet one. This is a common theme in Genshin. The Raiden Shogun puppet and Ei, Rukkhadevata and Nahida, Furina and Focalors. You get the point. I will also cover an alternative theory in section 3 though so watch out for that. Anway back to our regularly scheduled yap session.
–So the SWC came up with a way that supposedly still allows for Lucifer’s will to be projected upon Teyvat… The Heavenly Principles.
Their name is far too artificial for it to just be another name for the Primordial One. The HP would essentially be an automated way to govern the lands of Teyvat while Phanes is in a injured state. Essentially guiding the fate of Teyvat. This should begin to sound atleast vaguely familiar to any of you who have played the Petrichor WQ, and that is the point. I believe the HP to be extremely similar to Phobos in function and purpose. Except that it was never in the control of Phanes, It was all in the control of the SWC. Who eventually persuaded the Shade of Space, Asmoday to their side. Phanes however, is not an idiot, they knew of some sort of treachery. The great Nail thrown upon Sal Vindagnyr proved as much. The SWC would soon cast them aside in order to take all power for themselves.
Thus a scheme was concocted, and once again we look to Remuria.
Yes, That is what I’m implying. Phanes sought the assistance of the Dragon King Nibelung for thwart the SWC and the HP.
“But don’t they hate each other?” You ask, but yet do we really know this to be true? Sure they fought but once enemies can easily become allies if the situation requires them to be, and there is a precedent for alliances between God-Kings and Dragons. As you can guess… Remuria.
As I said The HP is similar to Phobos, Phanes is obviously Remus and you probably have already guessed Nibelung is the equivalent to Scylla. To continue the Scylla/Nibelung connections, in a sense Scylla is a lesser version of Nibelung.
Scylla is a Vishap, Nibelung is a Dragon.
Scylla is a prince, while Nibelung is a king.
Istaroth would be Cassiodor and Asmoday would be Boethius. The only outlier is the SWC as their closest counterpart is Sybilla but IIRC they didn’t want to hurt the people of Remuria, but I suppose it makes sense it wouldn’t be 100% accurate.
With this we can presume that Phanes had a similar plan to Remus, and that it ended in similar way but most notably NOT with the death of Phanes. Rather Phanes was defeated and overthrown, This is also a point where Phanes could have been “split” between Aether and Lumine and could also be the “true” version of the intro cutscene with the one we saw possibly being a altered memory, likely through means other than Irminsul though. The actual war itself would be rewritten in Irminsul saying that Nibelung had attacked Teyvat and was seeking to destroy Celestia. This would explain why the Dragons remember it as the “Great War of Vengeance”.
So thus Phanes is gone and now the SWC and Asmoday lay on top of the throne of Teyvat, however the HP requires someone to… sustain it. Thus Asmoday became the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles and either through simple passing of time or more Irminsul fuckery, the Heaveny Principles and Phanes became almost synonymous in order to further cover the truth of their sin. Istaroth would flee Celestia and begin assisting the people of Enkanomiya. The Shades of Life and Death would likely be forced into submitting to the new authority.
Now about the Third Descender, I think they got fucking cooked by the SWC. Given the SWC seem to be implied to be atleast somewhat comparable in strength to Phanes, combined with the fact they aren’t injured like Phanes was they likely could beat the crap out of the Third Descender. However they did not show the mercy Phanes showed to the SWC, that was their predecessor’s greatest mistake. The Third Descender was hacked to bits and it’s remains used to make the Gnosis. Blah blah Archon War blah blah Cataclysm you know the rest I’ll summarize it in the final part anyway.
Anyway time for some Abyssal YAP
  1. ABYSSAL YAP SESSION.
So first off who the FUCK is the Vinster King, well according to Wiktionary Vinster means “Dark” so we already know bro is on that Abyssal grind set.
Now there is two possibilities. One that’s neat, has interesting implications given it’s connection to one of the 5 Sinners which also makes most likely, and overall fits with theming of the other Sinners.
The other is fucking King Irmin because of course it is.
Ok first of all I don’t think it’s King Irmin because we do NOT need ANOTHER fucking name for this guy.
Now who do I think it is? I believe the identity of the Vinster King to be SurtSurt, the Norse Fire Giant who was said to destroy the world at Ragnarök. How does he destroy the world? With “Surt’s Fire”, also known as… Surtalogi. Surtr’s sword being imbued with it. Also curiously, the book Legend of the Shattered Halberd mentions Lævateinn, a weapon capable of destroying the world. Lævateinn is ALSO a Norse sword and one source says it could be the SAME sword Surtr uses thus making it imbued with ‘Surtalogi’. Lævateinn is also said to be the only weapon capable of killing a mythical bird known as “Víðópnir”, which is extremely similar to another bird called, get this, Vedrfolnir. Also though unlikely to actually related but still funny, Lævateinn is a weapon used by the character Flandre Scarlet in the Touhou Project series of bullet hell games. It is commonly depicted as being made of… get this… FIRE.
Anyway, Surtalogi is one of the Sinners of Khaenri’ah, those Sinners now seek to “betray the world” according to Dainsleif (who is also named after sword btw.) and thus destroy it. Given the other Sinners all seem to have their own focuses and Surtalogi’s known interests it is likely that he specializes in combat meaning in the war against Celestia he will be on the frontlines. Making him the metaphorical sword Surtr will use to destroy the world.–
TANGENT TIME IS BACK: Ok I thought of this while writing this but what if the curse Arlecchino has, which is fire based, is a literal Surt’s Fire in Genshin. It has the connections to Khaenri’ah and thus close proximity to the Abyss. Hell Surtalogi could actually POSSESS the same curse Arlecchino has.
–But none of this is actually answering the right question, it’s throwing names and motives around without knowing who we are applying this to. I believe the Vinster King to effectively be the will of the Abyss, if not the Abyss itself. After all the Abyss has to be sentient in some form in order to tempt the Sinners. A good comparison would be like The Ring from Lord of the Rings, it’s pseudo-sentient and tempts others with it’s power. (I’ve only watched the first movie so if I’m 100% wrong that’s why, I just hope you got the point I was trying to make.)
Ok now with that possible bombshell, I’ll explain the 2nd possibility for the Abyss Sibling. It’s possible that the Abyss Sibling could actually be a clone of the Traveler and thus Phanes. They possess the same love for humanity but lack such love for the gods and we don’t know their opinions on the Dragons. It also explains why they are connected to Irminsul and we aren’t. That’s all I have on this subject though
  1. Wrapping it all up.
Long ago, when the doves held branches, The Primordial One, Lu did battle with Nibelung and the 7 Dragon Sovereigns of ancient Teyvat. 40 years passed and he vanquished the Dragons but notably did not annilhate them, he respected their strength, pride, and honor. In return the Dragon King, Nibelung, made that respect mutual with his adversary.
In order to shape the world anew for the creation of mankind, Phanes split himself into 4 Shades, all embodying different concepts. These were the first lesser gods.
The Shade of Life.
The Shade of Death.
The Shade of Time, Istaroth.
The Shade of Space, Asmoday.
The Primordial One, Lucifer, was the embodiment of Logic and Reason.
With these powers and ideals, they carved the old world into a new one, and populated it with humanity. Phanes cherished humanity above all else so when another Descender from beyond the firmament of Teyvat invaded, they fought with all their might and eventually won this war despite suffering heavy injuries. It is possible that Phanes split during this conflict, but just because they split does not mean they are not one. They are two, but one.
Like the Sovereigns before the Second Who Came, Phanes showed mercy and offered to the SWC a position in his divine authority. The SWC accepted, not with humility but with malice as they continued to plot for the divine throne. Taking advantage of The Primordial One’s injured state they created a scheme through creating a system known as the Heavenly Principles, it was meant to be automated assistance for Phanes’ rulership. In reality it operated under the SWC’s will. Often being erratic, swift, and violent in it’s judgement.
The kingdom of Sal Vindagnyr saw this fate first hand.
Realizing the treachery in their midst, Phanes began to plan for a way to overturn the Heavenly Principles and thus the SWC. For this they reached out to his former enemy, Nibelung, for an alliance of convenience against this common threat. Nibelung was necessary as in their weakened state, Phanes even with the power of the 4 other Shades could not beat the SWC. He told the Shades of the plot so they wouldn’t interfere. Little did they know this is what led the plan to ruin as one of his Shades, Asmoday, had been tempted by the SWC.
When the day of the plan came, Phanes was stopped by theirown creation. Asmoday defeated her lord and effectively sealed them, likely in some far off corner of the planet that’s deep underground…
Nibelung battled the SWC, eventually falling in combat. Seeing her king imprisoned and their last hope vanquished, Istaroth fled Celestia and went into hiding. Helping the land of Enkanomiya survive after it had been swallowed by sea. The remaining Shades were forced into subservience for the new order. The Heavenly Principles still needed something to maintain it, thus Asmoday became the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles. The memory of the event was also altered with the usage of the Irminsul deep below the earth. The Heavenly Principles and the God-King in Celestia wrongly became one and the Dragons would only know the war as the Great War of Vengeance against the “Usurper-King”.
Yet despite their absolute control seemingly being enforced, the SWC’s grip upon the world began to erode. The arrival of a Third Descender opened up opportunities, the Third was slaughtered and their remains butchered at the request of the Heavenly Principles. Creating the 7 Elemental Gnosis. Then the lesser gods, fragments of The Primordial One’s strength, were forced to fight.
Among them was Amun, King Deshret. He was unique among the other gods as he was the closest thing Phanes had to a son, he was cast out of the Island in the sky for this fact. Seeking revenge he allied with a former Seelie and the Lord of the Woods, and the rest is history.
Once the number of gods was culled to just 7, they were granted the Elemental Authorities and the Gnosis. The Archons were told the Gnosis were the Authorities but in reality they were nothing but strings to keep them forever at the SWC’s command. What they could not predict was the ancient enemy of all things relating to Celestia.
Surtr, the Vinster King. Whether or not he is the Abyss itself or just it’s “will” does not matter. What matters is that all of his actions are in the name of the destruction of Teyvat. He tempted the Lord of the Blazing Sun with Forbidden Knowledge, legging to the corruption of Irminsul. He tempted Hroptatyr, Vedrfolnir, Rerir, Rhinedottir, and the one who would become Surtalogi, Surtr’s fire that will burn the world Celestia had made. He even tempted King Irmin himself, leading Khaenri’ah’s destruction. It is also possible they had found Phanes in stasis and attempted to replicate them, creating a imperfect vessel bound to the shackles the Irminsul creates to this world.
Once the Abyssal hordes began to wreak havoc upon Teyvat, Khaenri’ah was annilhated at the behest of the SWC and the Heavenly Principles. During this Cataclyscm however, one of the puppet gods realized the truth of the Gnosis, and possibly the truth of Celestia. They chose to turn their blade against the island in the sky, rebelling against the “divine”.
And now, here we are 500 years later. The ex God-King wakes upon a sandy shore, wrongly believing they were separated by a sibling they had. They made a fishing rod out of nearby materials, living off the nearby land to survive, learning to cook with the familiar yet foreign ingredients. One day however they fished up but one of the thousands of winds that make up the Shade of Time. Carrying the same loyalty held by the god of Time, ‘Paimon’ taught the last remnant of Phanes and their power the language of the land and convinced them to set off on a journey to travel the world.
Yet wouldn’t this be no problem for the true Usurpers? Phanes had lost the vast majority of their divine power, not even a Nail would be necessary to strike them down. Yet in truth, it couldn’t be worse. The Heavenly Principles are strangely inactive, The Second Who Came have grown docile.
Worst of all, the Sustainer is slowly dying as a result of their betrayal. She can only hope when the creator finally comes that they’ll be as merciful as ever and revitalize her with their power.
The burning world created by the Second Who Came will cease, and you will ascend back to your rightful throne above.
The dark king of the depths shall be striked down by your guiding light.
This tale is known as Yuánshén in Chinese, means “Original God”. This is translated to “Genshin” into Japanese and is used for most versions of it’s title.
You are the Genshin, You are the Original God…
…and it is up to you to make an Impact.
Special thanks to:
u/Mtebalanazy, for creating the original post that came up with the Remuria = Celestia connection. The same posting inspiring me to create this.
u/deathbaloney, for informing me of many pieces of evidence that allowed me to craft this theory. Specifically the Venus part. They also were major in inspiring me to actually make this post.
Dawit. For being the last remaining Genshin theory channel that I could trust. While Ashikai was busy yapping about all humans in Teyvat being dragons, you stood strong. While Chill with Aster was… Ok honestly idk what happened that made me stop, you still had FAITH in Phanes. And while Wei was pushing the Zhongli Descender theory for God knows what reason, you were capable of comprehending English. He also inspired the whole “The progenitor god hailing beyond the stars” bit from the beginning.
And finally, to you. For taking God knows how much time of your day reading this Yapfest that will probably end up only being half right because I’ve been keeping up that streak since fucking Sumeru.

Comprehension of Sweet Sounds: A New Section Dedicated to the Occult, the Symbolic, and the Philosophical in Hardcore.
“Shadows of shadows passing. The comprehension of sweet sounds is our most indefinite conception. Music when combined with a pleasurable idea is poetry. Music without an idea is simply music. Without music or an intriguing idea, colour becomes pallor, man becomes carcass, home becomes catacombs and the dead… motionless.”
  • Spoken by Orson Welles, written by Edgar Allan Poe
Techno and Hardcore have a rich tradition of conveying ideas through the inherent limitations of a genre that often lacks lyrics. This is achieved through the use of vocal samples and the cut-up technique, inherited from industrial music, to establish a central idea or emotion for the track. Synthesizers and beats act as futuristic onomatopoeias, evoking spaces. Creative use of samplers and sound design is employed to evoke emotions. The track's architecture itself represents a synaptic landscape or an escape to otherworldly realms. These are all techniques intrinsic to Hardcore Techno, appearing in each track to varying degrees, as it is the medium’s way of communicating.
However, despite the commonality of these qualities, there are times when certain tracks or sounds push beyond the usual boundaries. Sometimes this occurs by expressing an idea or emotion rarely found in Hardcore, which we have explored earlier in this e-zine. Instead, in this section, we will focus on those sounds and tracks that break through the veil of the obvious. These are tracks that, through symbols inherent to Hardcore, express hidden or philosophical ideas, making us reconsider music and reality, deepening our understanding of the genre and expanding its expressive possibilities.
In this first article of this new section, we begin with an analysis of the EP "Comprehension of Sweet Sounds" by FFM Shadow Orchestra, which gives its name to this section. This serves as a starting point to explore tracks that challenge our understanding of Hardcore and music in general. This particular track, through its ingenious use of sounds, art, quotes, and symbols, compels us to question the very nature of Hardcore as a musical genre. Thus, we have an EP that stands out not only for the quality and intensity of its tracks but also for its ability to lead us into a dark reflection on Hardcore Techno, using some of the most iconic sounds of the genre. Key to understanding this EP is the Edgar Allan Poe quote about music and ideas found on its back cover. “Sampled and processed” by Orson Welles and resampled by FFM Shadow Orchestra, it is not just a poetic analogy for the genealogies of resamples so intrinsic to Hardcore. It also provides us with a crucial metaphor for understanding these samples of samples as shadows of shadows. We will explain this in depth.
As the text on the back cover of the record points out, the “comprehension of sweet sounds” is our most indefinite conception as listeners of music in any of its forms. In other words, music opposes the clarity of ideas and concepts, a challenge that becomes more acute in genres like Hardcore Techno, which often lacks lyrics. Facing this difficulty, the title track of the EP (specifically the Stickhead Remix) tells us: “Music, when combined with a pleasurable idea, is poetry. Music, without the idea… is simply music.” After a brief prelude of breaks that guides us to the core of the track, a new sample tells us "Shadows of shadows... the dead".
And then we are assaulted by an intense and bombastic choral riff, as if a multitude of specters were howling in our faces, unwilling to confine themselves to the afterlife. The rest of the track becomes a drastic and syncopated onslaught of kicks and snares where the howls repeat and insist with various patterns, confronting us with their presence, their insistent and inconsistent repetition, creating a track with a primitive, spectral, and unpredictable vibe.
And in the eye of the hurricane of this furious swarm of howling specters, the question arises: isn’t the iconic choral stab of T99, resampled ad infinitum in Hardcore since the early '90s, precisely that? The shadow of a shadow of a shadow. The voices of a choral ensemble, captured in an audio recording, sampled and processed by T99, to be resampled or emulated by FFM Shadow Orchestra and countless hardcore producers over the past three decades. What started as a singular human chant became multiple shadows of shadows, immortalizing this choir beyond the limits of time and space. The ghost in the machine no longer corresponds to the consciousness that emerges from the circuits, but to human energy captured in them.
https://preview.redd.it/dyvdfofvk85d1.jpg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe29def0affcb7e9ab62bb9b74502573a6ccad74
This already suggestive proposition is further reinforced by the EP's cover art. It features several elements: a wolf howling at the moon, a kind of vortex or tear in reality, and the duplication of this set through an inverted mirror effect. Wolf, moon, vortex, mirror. Considering these in relation to the track itself, the cover seems to allude to the same idea of a spectral howl that tears or twists reality, connecting it to the beyond or another dimension, to the madness symbolized by the moon, and to repetition. It is as if it describes in an occult and symbolic manner the essence of what hardcore techno and rave were at that time: howls repeating, within the track, between tracks, like a horde of necromancers conjuring spirits and unknown energies to drag the audience into a ritual dedicated to madness and the unreal. Similarly, the back cover of the record contains an ode to the goddess Juno, deifying the Roland Alpha Juno 2 synthesizer, responsible for the other most iconic Hardcore Rave sound of that era: the Hoover or Mentasm. Thus, completing this work that pays homage to the sonic deities of Hardcore.
To avoid prolonging this extended reflection, we close this feature by celebrating the evident effort of FFM Shadow Orchestra to contemplate the essence of this style and communicate these complex ideas. They do this by using the elemental building blocks of Hardcore Techno, well-arranged symbols, and an excellent quote. This symbolic staging challenges us to go beyond the empty repetition of these shadows/samples, which, on the contrary, can be full of meaning, intriguing ideas, and become true poetry.

2024.06.07 04:55 sexyimmigrant1998 CMV: English classes should not be required for all 4 years of high school.

(Background: I'm 26, so I graduated high school less than a decade ago. I went to a relatively high academically performing public high school in San Jose, California. The school had a magnet business program focusing on graphic design, web design, and entrepreneurship, but the school overall placed a huge emphasis on STEM, with many students becoming engineers due to our location in Silicon Valley. In this school, it was expected that anyone who took the AP Calculus exam (AB and BC) should get a 5. We also had a variety of other departments, with a particularly impressive drama department known for high quality productions. I say all this to inform you of any biases I likely have).
Like any other demographic, high schoolers in any given school have a wide range of skills, interests, and passions. The point of school is to expose students to different areas of study as well as technical skills to let them gauge their interests for future career prospects while also building up their basic fundamental skills they'll need later in life.
There's a little variation district to district and state to state, but from what I've seen, math is typically required for 2-3 years. The sciences? Usually 2 years. Social sciences? 2-3 years.
These make sense. High schoolers don't usually know what they'll specialize in in life, and even if they choose something now, they can very well change their minds in undergrad or beyond. So I agree that they should be required to get sort of a “sampler” education, with at least some exposure to base levels of math, social sciences, and sciences. If they wish, they can take more of those courses and at higher levels if this is an area of interest. Ideally, a high school would also have a variety of other courses, from technical skills like woodshop and robotics to visual and performing arts like photography and music and acting.
So to my main point: As far as I know, every high school I've seen requires you to take an English course for all 4 years. Why?!
Like with math, science, and social science, I can definitely agree to a 2-year requirement, maybe 3. But all 4? Come on, now.
Now I by no means wouldn't want to stop any student who loves English from taking more English courses if it's their passion, I'm merely saying it shouldn't be forced every year on the other students.
English classes tend to be very similar every time, with the same routine of reading literary works and analyzing the story and its ideas and writing essays on it. But we've been doing this since kindergarten through middle school and now all through high school. It's just so… repetitive and impractical if it's not something you want a career in nor something you find interest in.
AP English Language and Composition (AP Lang) is an exception to this, typically taken by juniors (but also sometimes other grades, mostly seniors). It's a non-fiction-based writing class that's all about critical thinking when analyzing real-world articles and ideas as well as writing to form strong argumentation. There was plenty of crossover skill here with World History AP (WHAP) and AP US History (APUSH) and writing in standardized exams like the SAT or ACT.
Unfortunately, this was the only class of its kind. All other English courses were the same fiction, literary-focused classes analyzing fictional novels and poetry. AP English Literature (AP Lit) was obviously that but at a higher level, but even if you did not want to take this, you would be required to take a lower level English class anyway. My high school did offer elective courses like speech and debate as well as journalism, but to my knowledge, this did not fulfill the English requirement.
So that's really my argument. I don't see why we have to be bombarded with chapter books again and again just to have us write essays about the call to action of the hero or the rising action and the climax. If it's not your passion, English classes, which almost always focus on fiction, don't really do anything to build your practical skills nor will they help you get a career in most fields, especially STEM. Even for a path like law ,which is all about logic and argumentation and analysis, most of these English classes don't do anything for you because they're too focused on literary work.
I'm by no means arguing to require math, science, or social science for all 4 years, but hell, I'd much rather require any of those 3 areas for all 4 years over English, at least they're teaching you something new and expanding your knowledge.
Regardless, I'd much rather have that English slot go to something the student actually finds interesting if he/she doesn't care for literature. I would much rather a student learn a new instrument in orchestra or have an extra slot for the double period AP chemistry course instead. I don't see the point in forcing English classes on everyone.
Happy to hear your thoughts.
EDIT: I'm actually less against a 4-year English requirement than I am against being forced to take a constant stream of literature-focused English classes. I'm on board with the 4 year requirement if other courses like the aforementioned journalism, speech/debate, drama, scientific writing, etc. count as English credit. I'm all for teaching more communication! I just obviously am not a fan of fictional literary works, and I know a lot of people aren't either.

2024.06.07 01:46 Fair-Pea8108 How can I improve my academic vocabulary?

Greetings everyone. I need some advice, help and guidance on how i can improve my academic vocabulary. Im not a native speaker of the English language. I’ve learned it and gained my knowledge of it by associating myself with the western media since a young age. for example movies, music, comics, and of course social media. All these fun hobbies helped me improve my english language so much. And gain a large vocabulary.
Since a young age i have a dream of continuing my education outside of my country. I wanna have the opportunity of becoming an international student living in a completely different society experiencing a different culture with different principles. I’m going to graduate high school soon. And I wanna sign up for the academic IELTS exam. And get a good soccer so i can apply to colleges outside of my country.
Here comes my problem. Most of my vocabulary is coming from media therefore most of it is general words. I find it very hard to study in English. For example i cant understand a mathematic paragraphs, or a historical book, or even poetry. Also there are words i can’t understand. Words I never heard of like “objective, adequate, analysis, constrains”. Im afraid that I wouldn’t be actually able to pass the test with a high score. :(

2024.06.07 00:05 nitager One month of applications and still no interviews. Analytics roles

Hello!
I'm struggling a lot to get interviews after been sending out resumes for the past month. Not getting anything. I'm mostly applying for junior analytics roles (data analyst/scientist, risk analyst, quant analyst, advisory) in the fields of banking and consulting. What might I be doing wrong?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
P.S.: I had another experience before this internship, which explains better the gap after finishing my degree. However, it only lasted 2 months and was a researcher role in the analytics field where I learned very little. Should I add this to my resume?

2024.06.06 17:12 sameed_a The Great Apartment Hunt and the Sherlock Holmes Mental Model

last tuesday, i found myself entrenched in the labyrinthine task of apartment hunting in the city. a friend had recommended a list of seemingly perfect places, each with its own set of pros and cons. overwhelmed and unable to decide, i channeled my inner sherlock holmes, not with a deerstalker cap and a pipe, but with the deductive reasoning mental model.
i started by listing down all my non-negotiables for a new place – affordability, location, and pet-friendliness. each apartment was then scrutinized against these criteria, a process that felt akin to solving a complex puzzle with numerous variables. one apartment, though cheap, was located far from public transport. another was perfect but stretched my budget thinner than a sheet of ice in spring.
after a thorough analysis, i deduced that the third option, while not perfect, met all my criteria reasonably well. it was then i realized, sometimes, the best choice is not the perfect choice but the one that aligns most closely with your most critical criteria.
p.s. did you really think i turned into sherlock overnight? nah, just used a bit of mental modeling to make life a tad easier. for those moments when you're trying to solve the mysteries of everyday life, remember, elementary, my dear watson. and if you ever find yourself in need of a mental model coach, not saying you do, but if you do, remember, there's always [a place](https://) to help guide you through.

2024.06.06 16:58 Obversa "Greed is good": How the Catholic Church justified taking more than $3 billion in PPP loans to not only finance services and investments, but expand them

Per the article "The Catholic Church, with billions in reserve, took more than $3 billion in taxpayer-backed pandemic aid (PPP loans)" by Elliot Hannan for Slate Magazine (2021):
"Catholic dioceses in the United States and other institutions backed by the Roman Catholic Church took more than $3 billion in taxpayer-funded government aid as part of the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP loans), according to an investigation by the Associated Press.
That appears to make the Catholic Church the single largest beneficiary of the emergency aid program. While availing upon taxpayer-funded payments, designed to keep small businesses afloat and employees in their jobs during economic shutdowns, the AP reports the Catholic Church was sitting on $10 billion in cash, short-term investments, and other available funds.
The financial statements of 112 dioceses showed that they—along with the churches and schools they operate—collected at least $1.5 billion in PPP funds, even though, the AP reports, most of those dioceses had enough cash reserves to operate for six months with no revenue coming in at all.The fact that the market quickly recovered—and then grew—meant that many of the dioceses relying on investment vehicles likely made money on the pandemic. The Archdiocese of Chicago, for example, had more than $1 billion in cash and investments as of May, yet its affiliated institutions collected $77 million in paycheck protection (PPP) funds."
How the Catholic Church responded, in no uncertain terms: "If you do not like the program, complain to Congress...there is no indication of any illegal activity...the Catholic Church was simply very good at jumping through the bureaucratic hoops required to get a PPP loan. If I were a bishop, pastor or president of a school, I would have gone after every penny I could legally get. At the time church officials were applying for these loans, no one knew what the future held...the Church also still has to deal with falling tuition and drops in enrollment at Catholic schools. Everything the Church did was legal. Blame Congress, blame the banks, but don't blame the Catholic Church."
Per another source, Catholic News Agency (CNA), also affiliated with the Catholic Church: "According to reports, an estimated 12,000-13,000 of the 17,000 Catholic parishes in the U.S. (70-80%) applied, and most were encouraged to do so by their dioceses...the AP story does not assert that dioceses or other Catholic entities committed fraud or broke the law by applying for and receiving PPP loans...all parishes are taxed by their dioceses. In addition, many dioceses operate 'savings and loans', whereby parishes send excess money to a reserve fund managed by the diocese which functions like a bank; deposits can then be withdrawn at any time for any reason...'The Catholic Church is the largest non-governmental supplier of social services in the United States,' said Archbishop Paul Coakley."
For reference, in 2022, the Diocese of Knoxville implemented a controversial "25% PPP tax".
The second source also keeps citing "canon law prohibiting dioceses and bishops from swooping in and taking PPP loan money from parishes", but what the article fails to impart is that that "canon law" relies on the Catholic Church self-governing itself, rather than being subject to regular civil law.
Yet another article by the Catholic League specifically mentions "Catholic schools being especially hard-hit, with over 100 schools closing, and parents finding it difficult to pay tuition expenses". However, these are private schools, which also raises the question of public fund being used for private businesses and companies run by religious institutions. There is also a striking about of "whataboutism" and deflection by the writer(s), rather than addressing the Catholic Church's role.
Per yet another article, this time by the Catholic Review: "In late April 2020, the Diocesan Fiscal Management Conference had calculated that 8,000 parishes (47% of the 17,000 parishes in the U.S.), 1,400 elementary schools, 700 high schools (2,100 out of ~6,400 schools, or 33%), 104 chanceries, 185 Catholic Charities agencies and 200 other diocesan organizations in 160 dioceses had applied for assistance at that point...in Portland, Oregon, Catholic Charities of Portland was able to acquire a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan and retain all of its staff while retooling — even expanding — many of its programs...Catholic schools and parishes also were among the participants of the PPP....enrollment [at private Catholic schools] went up."
Catholic News Agency also noted, quoting Fr. Rick Stansberry of the Christ the King parish in Oklahoma City, which runs a 520-student private Catholic school: "If we can't reopen in person, I think we're going to lose a lot of Catholic schools, because parents are saying, 'Well, why am I going to pay tuition to do virtual (Catholic) school when I can do the public one for free?'" Per the USCCB, "The Catholic Church runs the largest network of private schools in the United States", so money is at stake.
Per one article, some Catholic schools kept millions in PPP loans, citing "we did nothing illegal":
Father Ryan High School, a private Catholic school received nearly $2 million in PPP loans. Director of Communications for the Diocese of Nashville, Rick Musacchio, said the school plans to keep the money and have the loans forgiven.
"We complied completely with the PPP program. It had requirements of keeping everyone employed, which we certainly did," Musacchio said.
Another Catholic school, Pope John Paul II High School in Hendersonville, received over $1.1 million from the PPP program. Musacchio told us they also plan to keep the money, even though total enrollment at Pope John Paul remained unchanged throughout the pandemic. He added that Father Ryan only lost three students.
[...] Musacchio also said the Catholic schools have lower tuition than some of the other schools that gave loans back, and he doesn't think taking the money kept small businesses from getting it.
An article from August 2020 also noted the "inequity" in Catholic schools abusing PPP loans:
"Of the 5,400 private schools identified [who received PPP loans], 1,764 are nonsectarian and 3,426 have a religious affiliation. Of schools with religious affiliations, Catholic schools received the most PPP money, with 1,715 schools taking home $1.3 billion—only $400 million less than the $1.7 billion given to nonsectarian schools. In other words, private and charter schools are getting more per facility, even though their schools are smaller on average.
Additionally, the Paycheck Protection Program was not the only loan assistance program available to private and charter schools. The Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program, which provides loans to cover operating expenses and revenue losses to business affected by the pandemic, was open to private and charter schools. So far, we have identified almost 300 charter and private schools which have 'double-dipped', and received both PPP and EIDL loans. EIDL loans received by these schools amount to $46 million."
Contrary to Church advocates claims of "an unorganized network of thousands of different Catholic charities and nonprofits", The Christian Post found the following: "According to an analysis of the list of beneficiaries by The Guardian, nineteen (19) organizations received between $5 million and $10 million, the highest loan amount available under PPP. Seven (7) of these 19 groups (~40%) are affiliated with the Catholic Church. Catholic dioceses, parishes, schools and other ministries have received approval for at least 3,500 forgivable loans, according to the Associated Press (AP)...the archdiocese of New York...received 15 loans worth at least $28 million just for its top executive offices."
For reference: "Established as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act—which was signed by President Donald Trump on March 27, 2020—the PPP began to distribute forgivable loans to small businesses on April 3, just three weeks after a national emergency was declared in the United States." This means that many parishes swooped as part of the cash grab.
These jerks literally argued that "greed is good" with the Catholic Church. Why? Because it allowed the Catholic Church to not only retain, but expand their reach. The Church also took out PPP loans in lieu of private loans, at least one Church official admitted, because private loans require strict repayment.
In addition to this, only a fraction of Catholic parishes and schools repaid their PPP loans:
"Mars Hill is one of a small number of religious organizations that took out large PPP loans only to return the funds without ever withdrawing a penny or to pay back the loan back in full.
According to an analysis by Religion News Service of data from the SBA, 13,408 religious groups, mainly churches, were approved for loans of $150,000 or more. Of those, 100 paid the loans back without asking for the loans to be forgiven. Fewer than 50 other groups were approved for the loans but did not withdraw the funds.
The repaid loans range from $4.37 million to $150,500 and totaled just over $66 million. Those repaying the loans include 99 Christian groups and one Muslim organization.
[...] More than 8,800 religious groups have asked for their loans to be forgiven — as the program was designed to allow, and a relatively common practice for all PPP borrowers.
[...] There are some indications that congregations avoided major fiscal decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than half of the congregations in a fall 2020 study from Lake Institute on Faith and Giving at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis said that giving had either stayed the same or gone up. Few (14%) said they had to lay off staff, while two-thirds applied for a PPP loan."
Some of the PPP money was given to dioceses with a history of clergy abuse, several of which had exhausted their finances with paying legal settlements and other fees to cover child abuse lawsuits. The Catholic news sources go out of their way to either ignore, or omit, possible PPP funds abuse.
The diocese covering Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia, received a PPP loan of $2 million, the newspaper said, adding that a church investigation revealed last year that then-Bishop Michael Bransfield of the diocese "embezzled funds and made sexual advances toward young priests".
The Subreddit-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named even defended this: "The Church qualified for the loan as an employer and kept their payroll, so they are reimbursed. The money is their money, so they can do what they want with the 'reimbursement', including legal bills." / "'Greed' suggests an extreme, disordered desire. Reasonable ambition is fine, since there's nothing inherently wrong with acquiring wealth."
A 2015 opinion piece from the Catholic Journal even goes as far as to justify the Catholic Church is worthier of receiving money than those who follow "un-Catholic" values: "For Catholics, wealth is always a mixed blessing. By its nature, wealth is purely neutral. It can be used for good or evil. The dangers of wealth revolve around its corresponding power. It can be used to build a hospital...or an abortion clinic."
As of April 2023, federal task forces of attorneys are still investigating cases of PPP loan fraud. While around 90% of PPP loans were judged to have been "non-fraudulent", investigations are ongoing. A report by Americans United noted the Trump administration "siphoning money to Catholic schools".
2024 data also supports the theory that Catholic churches and schools receiving PPP loans was primarily to try and fulfill the Trump administration's goal of promoting private Catholic schools. Per a 23 April 2024 article: "School choice experts point out that trends have shown that prior to expanded school choice, both Catholic and public school enrollment rates were rapidly declining. But with the expansion of education choice, new data shows Catholic school enrollment rates in Florida are up 9%."

2024.06.06 16:00 blueberry_noir Career change?

Hello everyone,
I'm a 32 year old woman and I've had a career in business for the past eight years. I have a degree in the Japanese language from a decent university. I worked my way up from low paying entry-level jobs to a great salary (and got very lucky) by becoming a cost estimator. The only issue is: math is a struggle for me, and I also have pretty bad ADHD, so noticing little errors on spreadsheets and noticing one little thing off with a calculation is not my strong suit. I'm pretty average at my job and I have to work really hard at it, as well as it triggers my OCD pretty bad, but I lack a lot of the skills and expertise that are required for other cost estimating jobs.
I have great savings and I'm wondering if I should make a career change, but money is always the issue with anything I consider (I have $50k in student debt so I'd prefer not to go back to college).
I'm naturally talented at photography, and currently I do fine art photography that the people in my life simply love, but I see how much small business owners and photographers are struggling nowadays with being seen and getting sales. I'm also great at multimedia art, but again, art isn't exactly something that leads to a high salary, especially with AI being on the scene now. I'm talented with interior design, but that requires a degree and is also low-paying. I'm good at creating clothing looks, too, as well as art analysis/art history, and writing and poetry. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that anything I'm good at that doesn't require more schooling is something in the creative realm, but I see no path forward with it in this economy. I'm talented at science and psychology but a masters in a science would be $$$, and again, anything involving math is a no-go for me.
I still live with my parents due to health issues that are now being properly treated and managed, so I'm at a good point to reconsider my options. Does anyone have any tips or pointers for me for a potential path change?

2024.06.06 14:11 curious_soul457 Reliability of pre Islamic poetry?

Recently, there has been a significant increase in the discovery of pre-Islamic poetry, offering valuable insights into the beliefs and cultural practices of the pre-Islamic Arabs. This corpus is extensive and has the potential to enhance our understanding of early Arabian society. Scholars have been examining these texts to determine their authenticity and historical value.
Research in this field is ongoing, and while there is no absolute consensus, there are several key points of agreement and contention among scholars. Some researchers argue that a substantial portion of this poetry is authentic, reflecting genuine pre-Islamic traditions and beliefs. They point to linguistic analysis, thematic consistency, and cross-referencing with other historical records as evidence of authenticity.
However, other scholars caution against taking all these texts at face value, highlighting the possibility of later interpolations, modifications, or the creation of poetry for political or ideological purposes during the early Islamic period. These scholars emphasize the need for a critical approach, using rigorous historiographical methods to separate genuine pre-Islamic poetry from later fabrications.
Overall, the field is characterized by a dynamic and evolving scholarly debate. While the newly discovered corpus of pre-Islamic poetry is a treasure trove for historians and linguists, its interpretation requires careful and critical analysis to distinguish authentic pre-Islamic content from subsequent historiographical influences. Discuss.

i remember making it when i was really young!! i made it with my cousin in 2018 who i had recently found out liked subliminals too, the affirmations were so simple, as simple as the benefits listed!! i edited in kinemaster and the visuals were a gif of a girl with a black bob doing a boomerang, it was a general rich sub and omg the affirms were things like "your parents are richer than walmart, google and all luxury brands you are 1000x rich you are 1000x richer than everyone around you"
i dont remember if i used I or you i think i used you lol, the editing was barebones and i think the audio was cardi b or something, now my affirmations include mathematical formulas and poetry and real analysis concepts
this really takes me back that channel is loongg gone but man starting out things were very simple! but the thing is my editing, affirmations and visuals were only simple for an amount of 2 videos!!after that i so easily got the hang of it and started writing paragraphs of affirmations lol, so if ur new at making subs please dont worry, it gets easier, a lil mor complex and a lot more useful!! keep making ur own subs!!
if u remember ur first ever sub channel or first ever subliminal u made do share if u can recall the details!!

2024.06.06 09:00 sameed_a Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Mysterious Compound: A Tale of Analytical Chemistry and the Sherlockian Deduction Model

so there i was, in my makeshift lab at the back of my apartment, surrounded by vials, test tubes, and an old, battered spectrophotometer that i had affectionately named watson. my quest? to uncover the identity of a mysterious compound that my friend, an amateur botanist, had stumbled upon in the depths of his greenhouse.
the compound was peculiar, exhibiting properties that were both fascinating and bewildering. it was this enigma that had awakened the sherlock holmes within me, compelling me to don my metaphorical deerstalker hat and embark on a journey of analytical discovery.
armed with the principles of analytical chemistry, i began my investigation. the first step was simple: observation. much like holmes would scrutinize a crime scene, i examined the physical characteristics of the sample. it was a crystalline substance, with a subtle sheen that hinted at its complexity.
next, i employed the art of deduction, a mental model that holmes himself would have been proud of. i hypothesized that if i could determine the compound's melting point, i might glean insights into its molecular structure. with precision, i heated the sample, my eyes glued to the thermometer. the compound melted at a temperature that was characteristic of a certain family of organic compounds.
feeling a bit like i was piecing together clues from a victorian mystery, i proceeded to employ various analytical techniques. spectroscopy, chromatography, and mass spectrometry became my allies, each revealing a different facet of the compound's identity. it was like decoding a secret message, each technique bringing me closer to the truth.
finally, after what seemed like an eternity of analysis and deduction, the mystery unraveled before my eyes. the compound was identified as a rare alkaloid, known for its medicinal properties. i couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of my friend accidentally discovering a potential pharmaceutical treasure in his own backyard.
p.s. - while i might not have a pipe or a violin, and my adventures in analytical chemistry might not involve solving crimes in the foggy streets of london, this little escapade taught me the value of observation, deduction, and a bit of sherlockian flair in the lab. of course, this was a hypothetical tale, but hey, it's elementary, my dear reader, that mental models like deduction can be quite handy, even in the most unexpected of places.

2024.06.06 07:21 neneumzin one more day left of junior year finals! need advice on improving my college app and what i should prepare for this summer ><

demographic: rising senior, female, asian-american, california (bay area)
school context: about 1.3k total enrollment, public IB school only 3 AP classes offered, they don’t disclose class rank anymore, also infamously known for having a REALLY WEAK math department
hooks: URM: filipino, first-generation college student (dad dropped out of community & mom only has an associates degree in USA), first-generation immigrant, low income, woman in STEM
Intended major (s): applied mathematics, any math majors related to actuarial science (long term goal is to be an actuary, & i am passionate about math)
academics: * ACT: not taken * SAT: not taken (is it worth it to take it next year?) * Class rank: N/A * UW/W GPA: 4.0 UW/4.38 * Coursework: (in noteable detail!)
freshman year: weighted classes not available to freshmen but significant classes i took was physics & geometry/10th grade math (straight As)
sophomore year: advanced algebra 2 & trig/11th grade math STEM class, ASB, ENG 2 ICAP (straight As)
summer: dual enrollment pre-calculus class at local community college (A)
junior year: IBDP candidate (about 11 kids in my graduating class doing the full diploma program), i couldn’t fit all my required classes in one year so they had to switched my schedule a bit
1st semester IB L&L HL, IB HOTA HL, IB ART HL, AP CALC AB, ASB, SPANISH 3, BIOLOGY (straight As)
2nd semester: IB LANG&LIT HL, IB HISTORY HL, IB ART HL, AP CALC AB, IB TOK, SPANISH 3, BIOLOGY (1 B+ maybe? it’s winnable but unknown until my teacher grades my TOK exhibition, UPDATE: SHE GAVE ME A 21/21 SO MY FINAL GRADE IS AN A AND I STILL HAVE STRAIGHT As)
*note: our school doesn’t have enough qualified students to offer any IB Math classes so advisory became the class where IBDP candidates were forced to study exam content on Kognity because we’re taking the exam senior year despite not being enrolled in the class
senior year coursework:
1st semester: IB LANG&LIT HL, IB HISTORY HL, IB ART HL, IB TOK, IB SPANISH SL, IB ENV SYS & SCI, ASB
2nd semester: same except no IB TOK anymore
extracurriculars:
overall: about 270+ hrs of community service from clubs & ASB makes us go out and do some volunteering to represent our school, no jobs bcoz no time to work, most significant things that i’ve invested most time and effort to is APSU, Cheerleading, Badminton, and ASB.
IBDP details: for my EE i wrote a lang lit analysis of the lyrics from mitskis album Puberty 2 as like poetry, my HOTA IA is about the social and political changes of a specific filipino-american community in my area from 1929-1960 (i don’t want to give away too much details sorry! TT), i wrote a mini Math IA my junior year about genshin impact: calculus math research paper about the IROC of my solo tartaglia dmg against a world boss with and without food buffs (my teacher scored it the best one out of my IBDP peers), i tried my best in TOK but i didn’t do good at showing my understanding of the philosophy content of the course so my grade is a B but it might turn into an A depending on what she grades my exhibition… i’m really anxious/sad about not having straight As but there’s nothing i can do about it anymore i guess, and also my IB Art theme is interconnection :)
LOR: i am getting a detailed LOR from my sophomore year economics teacher who left but gave me his contacts, i asked him to write about my work ethics especially with individually learning all the content from his course that i missed for 2 months, and how i always brought insightful questions to the class, my math teachers all adore me (my freshman year math teacher was the same as my junior year, my sophomore year math teacher is promoting to Assistant Principal!) so i could get a LOR from them too!
RD: UC Berkeley applied math with actuarial science cluster (#1 choice i think), UC Irvine applied math (#1.5 choice, i’m really torn), UCSB actuarial science, UCLA actuarial science, Claremont McKenna applied math, Harvey Mudd applied math, Scripps applied math - CHANCE ME FOR ALL THESE SCHOOLS!
Questions/Comments: PLEASE GIVE ME SCHOOL RECOMMENDATIONS i want to go to a school in california that has an excellent math program and would support me the best for getting me a job as an actuary after i graduate, i want to live in the bay area or orange county (location kind of matters a lot to me), what schools should i apply to as safeties? are all my college apply lists reach schools?
i only have one written PIQ at the moment (prompt #2, creative side): i talked about my 8 year hobby of cosplaying/costume making and it has taught me technical skills like sewing, embroidery, paper mache, sculpting, and it helped me build good work habits like time management, managing my finances, and completing projects before deadlines without sacrificing the quality of my crafts. based on what i shared in this post what other prompts i should answer and what should i write about?
also i will listen to any advice, i want to get into coding and learning python but i don’t know where to start since the popular summer programs i know about have closed sign ups now :(
is there anything in the bay area this summer that is math or finance related that could help me show my focus/passion for math? i can’t fit any math class into my senior year anymore unfortunately, and besides ap stats which i can’t take due to schedule difficulties there’s no math classes left to take beyond ap calc so idk if no math senior year will hurt my college app
i am the only girl in my grade who took AP calc during my junior year, AB is the highest offered math class, the past few years my school has been averaging at a 2 for exam scores, i took the exam last month and i had wanted to get a 5 when i first started the class but i think im getting a 2 or 3 or 4 so i don’t know if i should show my scores on my transcript if i want to go into mathematics. genuinely i love our math teacher but she was not good at teaching so it screwed us all over! i had tutoring in the 1st semester but then we both got too busy since he was a college student and i had too much going on. if i had put more effort into aiming a 5 on the ap exam i would not be a straight A student, unfortunately the IB diploma program makes you seem well rounded but it spreads you too thin as well :(
my IB math advisor recommended taking the HL exam instead of SL exam like my peers would take so i can get college credit for that if i score high on the HL exam
idk if this should be mentioned in my transcript about but my grandma died my sophomore year and out of all her grandchildren (my mom has 13 siblings) i am the only grandchild outside the philippines: her one wish she wanted us to fulfill is to get all her children & grandchildren together to scatter her ashes so i missed about 2 months of school my sophomore year to go overseas and then i was practically doing double the work of making up previous assignments and keeping up with the curriculum when i came back, i managed to pass with straight As but her death and the stress of school took a toll on my relationship with friends
also i am a closeted lesbian only daughter in a hella catholic household where my parents expect a lot from me but idk if it makes a difference if it only affects me mentally bcoz im not out but im in a 3 year relationship with my best friend LOL
