2024.05.15 15:56 IronWentworth Could use some help with Zarus offlane

I would like to say i am a below average player, traiding and breaking even fairly often on k/d. Ive tried other rolls but i often end up feeding unintentionally. I'm not necessarily looking for tips just on Zarus, but I've been playing him a bunch lately and a little bit of crunch along the side. I get his rotation and have a fairly solid build (Aug, berserker, citadel, tainted blade, and kinda pick my last depending on how things go) I find that if early game I'm struggling i can play safely with pokes and in and out of tower, slowly burning down my opponent. I struggle immensely when a carry ends up being on my lane and end up loosing lane early on but kinda recover mid match once Aug and berserker are built, still have to play super cautiously though. I feel like overall I need some kind of guidance, builds or tips or something, just can't pin point what exactly it is.
Side note, any idea when or at all if we can link our pc account to console? Would love to have my founder stuff on my Xbox

2024.05.15 15:40 MrHellride Don't Get Bit by the Hostgator.

A friend and I are looking for a new host. He linked me to a PC/Mag list where they have a recommendation for Hostgator. They claim that you get unlimited disk space (untrue). They have removed a lot of access through Cpanel. Such as you can't increase your file size upload. They add on charges arbitrarily without notifying you, and if you don't keep up with your card charges they get away with it. They won't refund the money that you shouldn't have been charged. They flood your email with special offers. They make you have a 6 digit pin, (I've had my same pin since 2012 and there was no reason to change it). They only allow 2 back ups, so if you have 4 domains, you're out! After you get your first back up, the second back up will never complete. Trying to send an email from Hostgator is horrible since many clients won't let an email from Hostgator through due to all the spam that comes from them. They updated their website and have removed many names of domains and replaced them with numbers that you have to write down. All the services are listed with these numbers so you don't really know what you have or what they are trying to charge you with. The prices have been removed and replaced, "Renew now" buttons. All in all Hostgator is crap.
The reason that we are looking for a new host is that I just cut the apron strings with Hostgator, and he didn't know I had been using them for the past 12 years.

2024.05.15 15:36 p_di [WTS] [USA-PA] [H] Alpha Omega Ra IEMs [W] PayPal

Photos
For sale is a brand new set of Alpha Omega Ra IEMs. They are an independent manufacturer based in Malaysia and have a small following on Head-Fi (link to their item page). This is a new model and took about 3-4 weeks from the time of order. AO offers customization for an additional fee, and these have a forged carbon faceplate and black shell with gold flecks (similar to a MEST Mk II). The IEM's configuration is as follows, from the product page:
1 Beryllium plated Dynamic Driver for Low
2 Sonion Drivers for Low Mid
2 Sonion Drivers for Mid
2 Sonion Electrostatic Drivers for High
4 way-passive Crossover circuit
3D Designed Dynamic Enhancement Dynamic Driver Acoustic Chamber
Sensitivity: 105db
Impedance: 28 Ohm
Cable: 4 Core Gold Plated Copper Cable
Socket: 2-Pin 0.78mm
The package is fairly straightforward and includes the IEMs, a 4.4mm terminated gold colored cable (as pictured on the product link), a case, and some stock eartips. It is not sealed and I merely verified that they're in working order, having just received them. I have some expenses that these funds can go to and I'm mostly getting out of the hobby again, so my loss is your gain, et cetera.
The retail cost is $590 before customization; with a small early bird discount I paid $630 USD including shipping. Asking $500 OBO. These are also currently listed on Head-Fi and you can refer to my sales both here and there.

2024.05.15 14:43 FormalConversation61 Help with first rep QC

Hi everyone!
I'm a long time lurker of this sub but have recently decided to pull the trigger on my first rep. I just got the QC pics and admittedly I don't know exactly what I'm looking at. I'm not really an overly picky person I'm primarily concerned with some things that I could potentially just be missing entirely because I haven't been through this before. I also know JTime is a little pricey for this but given this is my first rep I really wanted to stick with a TD that had really good service and I saw the best reviews for them in that category. Any help here would be super appreciated!
  1. Dealer name: JTime
  2. Factory name: CF
  3. Model name (& version number): Rolex Daytona (126500)
  4. Price Paid: 828 USD
  5. Album Links: https://imgur.com/a/n2fsII2
  6. Index alignment: Looks fine to me
  7. Dial Printing: Again, I think this looks fine but not an expert
  8. Date Wheel alignment/printing: pretty sure this is ok
  9. Hand Alignment: might need help here
  10. Bezel: not an expert on this
  11. Solid End Links (SELs): really no clue here
  12. Timegrapher numbers: these seem to be in the acceptable range based on the guidance from the template pinned on the channel but let me know if I'm wrong
  13. Anything else you notice: not really, mostly looking for a more seasoned eye to take a look and ensure I'm not missing anything

[Daily News] Citizen The Citizen Releases New Washi Paper Dial Watch For 100 Years Of The Brand; Fortis Presents Their Mars Mission Watch; Sterglas Has A Great New Chrono; And Byrne Shrinks Down Their Icon
Hey people. Due to some formatting issues with the old posts, I'm now posting these daily news updates as a gallery with a detailed writeup of all the watches down in the comments. It’s a bit messy since I can’t pin comments, but they’re there, don’t worry!
Some of you found this way of reading the post in the comments a bit clumsy and have asked for a direct link to the post. Here you go, but keep in mind you do not have to click on the link that leads to the newsletter post. All the text is in the comments. This is only if you prefer that format.

How CreatorHQ Made $75,229 in Just 30 Days
CreatorHQ earned $75,229 in its first 30 days.
$60,723 came during the launch window with bonuses...
But I'm even more excited about the $14,506 it's earned since going on evergreen.
Here's how I've continued promoting it (passively):

Website placement

Jay Clouse Website Placement
Since redesigning the website, I've been highlighting both CreatorHQ and The Lab just below the hero section.
I also highlight both in the primary navigation at the top of the page.

Website announcement banners

Website Announcement Banners
For a short time after the launch, I was running an announcement banner on my different website properties announcing CreatorHQ.
This banner is still live in some places, including the podcast website:

Internal podcast and newsletter ads

Internal podcast and newsletter ads
If you tune into an episode of Creator Science (like today's new episode) you'll hear an ad for CreatorHQ at the top of the episode.
I'm "buying back" some of my own ad space to promote CreatorHQ rather than a third party.

RightMessage quiz funnel

RightMessage Quiz Funnel
When someone visits my website, they are presented with a toaster that asks them some questions.
If you complete the questions, you're given a personalised offer for where YOU are right now.
CreatorHQ is one of the suggestions.

Dynamic email footers

Dynamic Email Footers
Depending on what I know about a subscriber, my email footer dynamically changes the next step it recommends.
CreatorHQ is one of the most common suggestions, and the language changes, too, based on your answers to the RightMessage quiz.

Twitter profile

Jay Clouse Twitter Profile
The launch video I shared on X performed so well that I've actually made it my pinned tweet.
It lives just below CreatorHQ in the Twitter Shopping bar, where people can find out more.

LinkedIn profile

Jay Clouse LinkedIn Profile
Similar to Twitter, I share it on my LinkedIn profile in the Featured area so people see it when they visit my profile.
There's more – the show notes of all my podcasts, YouTube videos, etc.
But here's the main point:
Create more opportunities for people to learn about (and consider) your product.
By increasing the surface area of your marketing, and you'll get more sales.
If you learned something from this, Save it to find it again later.
Or, if you're inclined, why not share this post with others?

The Facebook company made all the basic files for WhatsApp Messenger available as open-source software in late 2016. Now anyone can use those codes to develop a messaging service that competes with WhatsApp. An Android developer from the Arab world named Atnfas_hoak, better known as Omar. Uses those codes to create a chat application that connects directly to WhatsApp’s native database. Although he created this mobile application for entertainment. But the interesting thing is that it provides more features than the initially released WhatsApp and that is why the number of people using this WhatsApp is increasing day by day.

2024.05.15 12:43 Cherry_Crystals Is there any way to get a stolen device back from Curry's Pc world?

My brother stole and confessed to stealing my laptop (spare laptop but it was still mine) and sold it at Curry's PC world for £50. My family told me to just forget about it since it was my old laptop (but it has my CV saved on it's hardrive) and that my brother confessed to it now.
I tried emailing customer service but got 0 response. I tried tracking it (LUCKILY it was linked to my microsoft account) but it has the location disabled and it is showing 0 percent battery. I have gotten the name of the device, the serial number, the system type, the OS build etc that is accessible in my microsoft account. The laptop was also stolen a couple of months ago and probably sold a couple of months ago too
Is there any way of getting it back since it was stolen and sold months ago? I am beyond pissed that Curry's just openly accepted the laptop without doing any checks or proof of ID (the laptop has my account, my little brother's and my older brother's account on it and he knows NON of our pin numbers or passcodes to unlock the device). I REALLY don't want to go to the police as it's going to be a lot of headache but I want this laptop back to retrieve my CV and also because it's my laptop and I want it back.
Also since I cannot track the laptop, I can't lock the device. Any advice, I will be SO GRATEFUL FOR!!
Edit: I am in England. It also says I cannot track the device as it hasn't been used in the last 30 days

2024.05.15 12:03 TNDmaxxer Lexar NM790 Concern

I am new to this so forgive my lack of knowledge. I want to purchase the Lexar NM790 2TB SSD, but after coming across a video on youtube I am concerned that it may be incompatible with a motherboard.
The pinned comment on this video says:
"For anyone who's planning on putting it in a USB/thunderbolt enclosure - Do NOT. It's a DRAM-less SSD which uses HMB (host memory buffer) meaning it's using your PC's system memory for write cache and the lookup table. HMB does not work over USB and thunderbolt unless it has direct PCIe lanes assigned to the drive, and even then that's not a guarantee. Without HMB its nominal "1000TBW" (1TB model) endurance will get closer to half of that, or even worse."
I have no idea what this means and I am worried if the SSD is going to be incompatible with my MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI Motherboard ATX and my XFX Radeon RX 7900GRE graphics card.
Is this a serious issue or does it not matter?

2024.05.15 08:39 ButtRuffuhgus I'd like help choosing a first canoe please

It took a lot of time, and I've finally saved up and am ready to begin the process of purchasing a canoe for my family this summer! I've been lurking around this community for a bit now, and thought I'd take the plunge and ask for some practical advice.

I have read the pinned post, and will use the template here:
Do you plan on using the canoe Solo or Tandem?
Where are located and where are you paddling? Whitewater or Flatwater or both?
Experience of paddler(s)?
Size of paddler(s) & passenger(s)? Is there also a Hound Dog? Kids?
Capacity needs (multi-week expeditions? Day trips? How long would be the longest overnight trip you anticipate?) Are you minimalist, do you bring all the luxuries including the kitchen sink, or somewhere in the middle? If you have an idea of actual gear weight, all the better.
Stability (& Capacity) vs Speed - where on the spectrum are you happiest? Fast canoes are fun, but they are less stable and haul less. Related: Are you fishing, and how important is this aspect to you?
Is light weight important for portaging or loading on a vehicle? Do you need a yoke for portaging/carrying?
How will it be stored - will it be inside, outside & protected, outside & exposed to sun?
Do you have any specific needs/desires when it comes to hull material?
Budget?
What do you want to do?

I have been looking into Esquif canoes a lot, and am really leaning towards the Heron. It has 3 seats in the design, which would allow me to "comfortably" take at least 2 of my kids out with me at the same time. I have thought about the Mallard as well.

What worries me is the square backing. I definitely can't afford a motor right away, and I don't really want one. I've read and seen on videos that a square back is far from ideal for a paddler. I've thought about the Scout, but it seems a little small for us.

I've looked at about every canoe Esquif has on their website, and I can link their videos and websites all day, but that won't help anyone. I'm hoping someone can give some practical advice on a good choice for a family canoe. Thanks y'all!

2024.05.15 08:01 hoggersbridge Engines of Arachnea: A Science Fantasy Epic (Chapter 18: The Quality of Mercy)

Link for all the chapters available here: Engines of Arachnea on Royal Road
Zildiz felt her exomorph go rigid as it lost contact with her central nervous system. Curse that wretched Leaper! She’d forgotten just how durable their physiologies were. Their exomorphs had three times as many backup systems as those of Gallivants, unsurprising given that they had to retain control over their complex musculature. She’d been a fool for thinking that merely cutting it in half would do the trick. The error would wind up costing her life in these next few moments unless she took drastic action.
She was blind—her helm and its sets of eyes had sustained catastrophic damage and left her soft innards exposed. Even worse, she was crippled, the exomorph’s augmented muscle fibers unresponsive to her nervous system's inputs. But perhaps she still had the sheer physical strength to swing her blades. Zildiz tried to flex her wrist and was rewarded by a vigorous twitch of her pinky finger. Just in time; she could hear the Leaper close by, the leaf litter crackling as it approached.
Not yet, she told herself. Just a little closer. Hands pawed at her face and tore off the remnants of her helmet, scraping the hemolymphic gel from her naked face. What the hell was it doing? Zildiz had to restrain herself from crying out and striking at the air in panic.
Not yet! It was a crime to interrupt a fool when he was digging his own grave. Zildiz lay perfectly still as the Leaper fiddled around with her exomorph, feeling helpless and violated as never before. Vowing to give the bastard a slow and painful death for this, she curled her hand into a fist and waited until she felt its fingers caress the surface of her innards. Letting out a scream of incoherent rage Zildiz thrust at her unseen enemy, heard a cry of pain and the Leaper stumbling away, swearing profusely.
“Ow! That hurt, you witch! What the blazes are you?” the Leaper cried out. Zildiz frowned. That hadn’t sounded like the croaking of a Leaper. Speaking a slow and halting fashion, she replied:
“I would ask you the same thing.”
“I am Rene Louvoture, assistant navigator, 9th Battalion, 3rd Pathfinder Regiment.”
Zildiz shook her head at the string of gibberish.
“I am Zildiz, of the Blade-Wings. Why haven’t you killed me?”
“Why would I?" said the voice, sounding both shaky and incredulous, “You’re just like me, aren’t you?”
“How so?”
“Open your eyes and see for yourself.”
Zildiz realized with a start that it was referring to the primitive ocular organs of her innards. The thought hadn’t even occurred to her. The last time she’d been out of her exomorph was when she and Menash had been together, many cycles ago. With great effort her atrophied facial muscles remembered how to lift her eyelids, and she beheld a world of total darkness.
Bioluminescent growths from the surrounding vegetation gradually helped her to see with her naked eyes, and she beheld the prey-form standing over her with a hand clamped to its bleeding shin. Its albino exoskeleton was ripped and stained with blood. In its fist it clutched a short blade that emitted a constant, low hum. Zildiz propped herself up on her elbow and locked eyes with the creature. To her disgust she found that its exomorph had a completely transparent helm allowing her to see its bare face in all its lumpen hideousness. It had a head of curled black hairs, matted and moist like the growths on a Leaper’s belly. The prey-form’s flat, broad nose gave it a singularly pugnacious look, while its skin was as milk-white as that of a flesh-eating maggot’s. Zildiz dragged herself back, her first instinct being to recoil from it.
“Don’t move,” Rene advised her, “You’ve suffered some sort of spinal injury, I think. Can you feel your legs?”
“No,” Zildiz lied, thrusting out her chin at him defiantly, “What do you care?”
“I told you, I’m not about to kill you. We’re the same, can’t you see? Human!”
“We share the primal pattern, but I am a Gallivant. You are not. That is all that matters.”
“Right,” Rene sighed and sat down on the rotting log, “Whatever that means. Ye gods, I need a stiff drink right about now.”
Zildiz eyed him suspiciously, convinced it was some sort of ruse. He was just gauging how crippled she truly was and waiting for her to lower her guard. Very well; two could play at that game. In the meantime, she would try and work some feeling back into her exomorph.
“Are you really a hatchling?” she asked it suddenly.
“You heard that nonsense, did you?” Rene glanced up, “Of course not. I was just leading them on. The ‘fire giant’ isn’t a living creature, it’s a machine—a Divine Engine. What, don’t you have them wherever it is that you come from?” he joked, smiling at her. Zildiz grimaced at the sight, and he stopped.
“A machine,” she said slowly, “Like this one?”
Zildiz gestured at her disabled exomorph. Rene chewed over that piece of information. So that was what she was wearing: a living machine, a sealant suit of chitin and muscle equipped with weaponry and capable of flight. Like the Engine, it was a level of technology he hadn't even known could exist.
“Not exactly,” he finally replied, “I mean, it isn’t quite as revolting as yours. No offense,” he added quickly, snatching a quick glance at her face. She had a hawkish look about her, all thin lines and edges, but somewhere in there was a wild and timeless beauty which defied his attempts to pin down as some definable quality of womanhood.
“So you have been inside of it,” she confirmed with a look of satisfaction.
“I didn’t say that,” Rene stammered, feeling like he was losing the battle for information, “I merely observed it from a distance. I mean, the sheer size of it. Who wouldn’t have? You saw what I—what it—did to the Amit mound.”
Rene bit his lip, mentally kicking himself for his careless slip of the tongue. Zildiz narrowed her eyes at him, partly out of mistrust and partly due to the head-splitting migraine she was feeling. It had been so long since she’d been forced to rely on this basic sense organ, and its rods and cones were out of practice.
“The grey behemoth, this Divine Engine, as you call it. Did the Vitalus send it to cull the colony? Are you a Hollowore?”
“A Hull-of-War?” Rene repeated dimly.
"A Inkarnid? An Aspect of the All-In-One?"
“Look, I haven’t the foggiest notion what you’re talking about. And I’m the one asking questions here, don’t you forget it. Flame and perdition!” he swore, “You really nicked me, you know that?
Rene set his sword to aside and bent over to poke at the shallow stab wound on his shin. Zildiz chose that moment to burst into action. She was on her feet before he knew it, slicing at him with her blade arms. Rene yelped and rolled backwards off the log, narrowly avoiding dismemberment and flipping over nimbly to his feet, cursing himself for letting her gain the upper hand.
“Stop! Please, I don’t wish to hurt you!” he shouted at her as he ran circles around the dead tree, keeping it between himself and her wicked blades. Her movements were awkward and ponderous, as though her legs weren’t used to supporting the weight of her body. Scowling wrathfully, Zildiz kept after him as he jogged just out of her reach, the two of them playing a very earnest game of ring around the rosy. Finally Rene had enough and took up the club again, whacking her on the back of the knees so that she fell forward onto her hands. Her nose flattened itself against a pebble, producing an indescribable pain. She groaned and clutched at her face while Rene sat on her back to keep her pinned down.
“Sorry! Sorry! I really am. But it seems at this point to be abundantly clear,” Rene shouted as she flailed at him ineffectually with her blades, “That I have no other option but to take you in!”
“Just try and feed me to your brood, I dare you!” she screamed as blood trickled from her nostrils, “I’ll carve out their eyes and feed it to them!”
“What? No! That’s not it at all!” Rene cried, mortified, “As a soldier of the Fleet, I am hereby placing you under arrest as a hostile belligerent. Henceforth, you may consider yourself my prisoner of war!”

2024.05.15 07:43 drinksomewhisky Synology RS2423+ Fan Replacement

Hi
I am looking to replace the stock fans on the RS2423+.
I have modified and set up a custom fan curve. The lower fan speed yields less noise however, it does not do a great job of keep the temps down. This causes temps to rise above certain thresholds, which ramp the fans to noisy levels.
I am looking to swap the fans to run them at a constant faster RPM, with hopes of lower noise overall. It is the whine of the stock fans that are a bit much. Unfortunately, I am stuck working from the same room as the unit.
In checking Synology's site, I see that I need 60x60x38 fans: link
The only Noctuas that could work from my research / understanding are the NF-A6x25: link
However, there seems to be four choices:
NF-A6x25 PWM - 4-pin PWM
NF-A6x25 FLX - 3-pin
NF-A6x25 5V PWM - 4-pin PWM (5V)
NF-A6x25 5V - 3-pin (5V)
I physically took one of the fans out and saw that the RS2423+ uses 4 pin fans. However, I am uncertain if the fans are 5V or not as I did not see any labels on the fans to indicate voltage.
Is there anyway I could tell which ones would be right for me?
Also, I am curious to see if anyone has successfully changed their fans on an RS2423+. If so, please share which replacement fans were purchased and if you are satisfied with the results.

2024.05.15 07:27 SpaceSpores Legion 7i gen9 arrived!

Hey all so keen for my massive upgrade is here. I've read through the pinned guide about new legions for beginners, I'm just wondering a few things: - is the fully charge/discharge battery necessary? - any tips on creating an external backup boot drive? I can't remember the last time I did one. - I got an extra 4tb SSD to install, should I do this before I set everything up or wait until I've checked and updated everything before installing a 2nd drive?
Links to any other tips or previous posts regarding these questions will be super helpful, cheers!

2024.05.15 04:13 jajamjam An in-depth guide to technologies for charging, docks and more

Hi all! This is a rather comprehensive guide for newcomers to PC gaming to help understand the relevant technologies when it comes to docks, peripherals, external storage and monitors. This should help navigate the sometimes conflicting and confusing advice online and enable you to make buying decisions based on your personal needs.

Cables, Power Delivery and 30W Turbo

(More info regarding cables under Data Transfer - Cables)
Cables and Power Delivery
All USB C to C cables built to spec are capable of providing 20V@3A for a maximum of 60W. For any higher power output, there are different protocols and the Ally uses the Power Delivery (PD) protocol which is common for laptops - If you already have a laptop with USB C charging, check to see if its charger supports PD charging since you could use its charger with the Ally and vice versa.
The PD protocol requires a handshake where the power source, whether it be a charger or power bank, communicates its different capabilities (eg. 15V @ 3A = 45W, 20V @ 3.25A = 65W, 20V @ 5A = 100W, etc.) and the device communicates what it can safely receive over the USB cable. This communication requires an E marker chip built into the USB C cable which allows the power source to deliver up to 48V @ 5A = 240W, although it is more common to find the older 20V @5 A = 100W cables. The E marker is also what allows you to plug in a high output PD charger to charge much lower powered devices without frying any components since the charger will keep to a safe/low power output until the E marker communicates the capabilities on both ends.
The Ally uses the 20V @ 3.25A (65W) PD power profile and any USB C to C cable with an E marker should work for the Ally as long as your charger or power bank can deliver the aforementioned 20V @ 3.25A.
Note: Sometimes cables just aren't built to spec and cheaper cables might not work as intended or fail quickly. The E marker chip malfunctioning is a primary reason why your charger and cable combination might suddenly stop working as intended and not deliver the 65W to the Ally even if it did earlier - in most situations, it might just drop to 20V @ 3A (60W).
30W Turbo requirements
As far as the ROG Ally is concerned,
How to enable 30W Turbo
If you're connecting the power source directly to the Ally, i.e. not using a hub:
If you're connecting the Ally through a dock/hub:
This is where things get interesting. Without getting very technical, USB specifications are set by the USB Implementers Forum (USB IF). For docks and hubs, the specification states that USB devices should be able to draw power at the port with max power draw specified. For USB 3 devices, this max power draw is 5V @ 900 mA (4.5W at the port) and for USB 2 devices, this max draw is 5V @ 500 mA (2.5W). This is why most docks and hubs have their own power requirement, around 15W usually but may vary, so that power is reserved for the USB ports. Depending on the device connected, this power draw can vary - a portable spinning hard disk drive will draw more power than a dongle for a wireless mouse for instance. Insufficient power to the ports can manifest in many ways such as USB devices disconnecting and reconnecting, HDMI intermittently disconnecting, etc.
I haven't been able to test this so please take this section with a grain of salt - docks that support 30W Turbo with the original charger don't seem to meet the official USB IF specs since the dock must be exposing the Ally to the 20V @ 3.25A PD profile without reserving any power to the USB ports. I haven't been able to confirm this myself as all the docks and hubs I use reserve around 15W for the ports and require at least 80W+ PD to allow the 30W Turbo mode. Based on my digging online, it seems like some people have no issues using these docks while others have reliability issues such as the ones I described earlier.
To summarise, enabling 30W Turbo mode reliably on the Ally when connected to a dock or hub requires (should require?) the following:
If you don't care about playing on 30W Turbo mode,
As mentioned earlier, all USB C to C cables should be capable of at least 60W. Using a charger with any lower PD profiles such as a 45W charger will not cause any damage or harm, you might just lose battery even with a charger connected but that's about it. I often use my 25W phone charger or even Nintendo Switch charger - reliable chargers will not damage your device.

Data Transfer

General info
Mbps, MB/s, Gbps and GB/s - there's a difference.
You'll often see the terms Mbps or MB/s (alternatively Gbps or GB/s) used to refer to USB speed, storage speed, internet speeds, etc. but it's important to note the difference.
Mbps = Megabits per second, MB/s = Megabytes per second
Gbps = Gigabits per second, GB/s = Gigabytes per second
Data transfer is usually measured in Megabits per second, Mbps (or Gigabits per second, Gbps). Your internet speed is a great example of this. Files and any storage in general is measured as Megabytes or Gigabytes. To work out file transfers in Megabytes or Gigabytes per second use the following:
8 bits make up 1 byte and 1 Gigabit = 1000 Megabits. To keep things confusing, 1 Gigabyte = 1024 Megabytes.
If your internet service provider is providing a 1 Gigabit connection it works out to 1000/8= 125 Megabytes per second, i.e. a file that is 250 Megabytes will take 2 seconds to download. (Note: real speeds will always be lower due to network overhead, congestion, distance to servers and a bunch of other factors.)
A breakdown for the things most relevant to the ROG Ally:
The Ally's USB C port is USB 3.1 Gen 2 with DP Alt mode so the max transfer speed you can get from the Ally is 10 Gbps. Ideally you should look for docks and cables that are capable of 10 Gbps.
Other notable mentions:
WiFi 5 and 6 speeds are theoretically MUCH higher but this is what most people can expect from their routers to their device - including crappy ISP provided routers.
For LAN and WiFI, these are the speeds you can expect on your local network and NOT the speed your ISP provides to the internet. Your local network is what you are using when you stream in home from a PC or console to the Ally using something like Steam Link or Sunshine. Or if you access storage on your network (NAS, Plex server, Jellyfin, etc.)
Real speeds will always be lower across the board when you account for any overhead such as the Windows File system, background tasks, network overhead etc.
Data Transfer - Cables
Make sure you're using a cable that can match the speed of the device, ie. if you're connecting a USB 3.0 device, make sure the cable also supports USB 3.0 at least. Similarly, you need to use a 10Gbps USB cable to achieve 10Gbps data transfer speeds. Using higher spec cables should always work reliably with lower spec devices too, such as using a 10Gbps cable with a USB 2 device will just operate at USB 2 speeds.
NOTE: A cable containing an E marker chip does not necessarily mean it can do video or even USB 3.0 file speeds. The E marker chip is unrelated to data transfer capabilities. In general, most 100W E marker cables only work at USB 2 speeds if used for file transfer, unless they explicitly state other capabilities.
I've personally had great reliability with 240W E marker cables though and it's been much easier to find reliable cables that provide 10Gbps data transfer, 4K 60Hz video output and any level of PD required all through one cable. I suspect the reliability mainly comes from the more stringent certification process required for 240W PD. These cables can be chonky though.
Can games run from an SD card, external hard drive, external SSD or USB flash drive?
Short answer, yes.
Longer answer, yes, but keep the following in mind:
My advice would be to install any game you intend to play only while the Ally is connected to a dock on external storage devices, otherwise install them internally. For instance, I only play Ace Combat when I'm connected to my TV so it made sense to install it on external storage that is always connected to my dock and TV.
External storage - What should I use?
What's the best keyboard, mouse, controller for the Ally?
This will entirely depend on you - There are three main ways to connect and each has its pros and cons. The way you personally see these pros and cons will help you pick.
Wired devices:
Pros - lowest latency in most cases, no need to recharge devices.
Cons - need a dock to connect more than one device and you'll need to manage cables.
Bluetooth:
Pros - cable free, no need for a dock to connect to your devices.
Cons - some latency, need recharging/batteries, connectivity issues are common.
Wireless dongles:
Pros - cable free, lower latency than Bluetooth and some devices have latency comparable to wired performance.
Cons - still need a dock if you require more than one dongle, dongles often use 2.4Ghz protocols and might have crazy interference with poorly shielded devices around them.
Some devices will offer more than one way to connect - I've found them ideal for the Ally.
My peripherals (not recommendations per se, rather my use case since all were bought for an existing work from home/gaming PC setup)
Keyboards:
Mice:
Controller:

Displays

HDMI vs DisplayPort
Like any data cable, HDMI and DisplayPort carry data but in the form of audio/video data. DisplayPort can carry more of this information based on the most common version available, ie. DisplayPort 1.4 which supports up to 32.4Gbps. The most common version for HDMI is 2.0 which supports up to 18Gbps.
DisplayPort is preferred for gaming PCs generally since they are better at communicating capabilities such as FreeSync capabilities, HDR capabilities, etc. which is why most monitors use DisplayPort, especially modern ones.
DP Alt mode and USB C monitors
The Ally along with numerous phones and laptops support video out over USB C using what is known as DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode). This only works over USB C to USB C.
Some newer monitors support this and can be driven by just one USB C to USB C cable. They might also provide USB PD power.
Portable monitors also use DP Alt Mode to work over USB C. For HDMI, they use a standard HDMI to mini HDM and you need to plug in power when using HDMI. I haven't come across a dock that supports DP-Alt mode on its USB C ports making it impossible to drive a portable monitor over USB C with a dock (HDMI obviously will still work.)
Thunderbolt hubs may have USB C ports which allow DP Alt mode but in my experience they downgrade these ports to only USB 3 (without DP ALT mode) when connected to something that isn't Thunderbolt.
I only have experience with the Arzopa A1C (1920x1080, 60hz, 15.6 inch display) but here is my takeaway:
Common misconceptions for anyone used to console gaming or new to PC gaming
(Note: The section below is only relevant to native resolution output without any frame gen or upscaling such as RSR, FSR, AFMF, etc.)
I've seen numerous posts asking "will this __inch monitor work?". Your physical screen size does not matter. The pixel count does. A 24inch 4K 60hz monitor will be just as hard for the Ally to run as a 60inch 4k 60hz TV.
For the Ally at its native 1920x1080 resolution at 120 frames per second, the GPU has to render 2,073,600 pixels, 120 times per second.
When you connect your Ally to a 4K 60Hz TV and try to output at your TVs native resolution of 3840x2160, the Ally has to process 8,294,400 pixels, 60 times per second.
Essentially, you will never get the same performance hooked up to a 4K TV at native resolution compared to running a game at the Ally's native 1080p resolution.
The same goes if you're looking at 3440x1440, 2560x1440 or any resolution when considering a monitor. In terms of "will it work with the Ally?" The answer is always "yes it will work" since the Ally is a PC, but adjust your game settings or your resolution accordingly.
Simply put, the higher the resolution (and frame rate), the more pixels the GPU needs to render, the bigger the performance hit.
I can put together a detailed AMD Adrenaline and general game settings guide if there's interest.

Things to keep in mind while buying a dock or hub:

My thoughts on the docks/hubs I own
All of them work pretty identically and offer 4K HDR, 30W Turbo, etc. when connected to a 100W PD charger. The ports are all USB 3.0 so max speed of 5Gbps. I’ve mentioned anything of note
Other handy accessories
Thanks for reading and hope it helps!

2024.05.15 04:04 lebowskiachiever12 Old Lacie External HD power supply?

Was cleaning the basement out before newborn got here and found an old Lacie external hd from college. It’s quite old… I think I bought it in 07 or 08. It’s the Porsche design one (which is funny b/c it’s just a silver brick).
I can’t find the original power supply. It has a 4 pin plug… which I think is a 12v/5v. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but anyone know if that’s correct for the old model? Would love to buy a replacement. I know there’s tons of old pics from college, writing project stuff, recordings from an old band, etc on it… assuming it would still work. Would be neat to have that stuff to show the kid when they get older. Would be worth the $20-$30 for the replacement.
Edit - This is the model. It’s the 250gb that’s both USB 2.0 & FireWire compatible. Unfortunately the product sheet doesn’t mention the power supply.

2024.05.15 03:30 RuIerOfNobody [USA-CA][H] 2x ASUS ROG b650e-f [W] Paypal, Local cash

Here is a repost with some lowered prices.
I have two motherboards today which had bent pins that have been corrected. Please read the descriptions of both items so you know what was done to each board to fix them and what their problem was/is. All motherboards have been tested to ensure functionality from all the DDR5 lanes to the PCIE & m.2 lanes. I have timestamps of the 3D Mark stress tests as well as the link to the verified stress test. Both 1&2 come with a 14 day return window in case you find anything I did not find. Local is 91214.
ASUS ROG B650E-F WIFI #1 ($100 shipped or $80 local cash)
This motherboard had three slightly bent pins that I pushed back into place. No major damage to the pins other than a little bending. There was thermal paste along the right side of the socket and I scraped at to clear all the heads. There is still some towards the base that I was not able to remove. It does not affect the functionality of the board. Board has minimal scratchers on the heatsinks. The pictures are worse than what you really see on the heatsinks for scratches, it is my bright desk light. Please see timestamp for accessories. Comes with factory box. Asking $100 shipped or $80 local cash.
ASUS #1 Stress test
ASUS ROG B650E-F WIFI #2 ($110 shipped or $90 local cash)
Board had 2 bent pins that were ever so slightly bent. Was able to clean them up nicely. Board still has the peelies on some of the heatsinks. Super clean and doesn't appear to have any scratches on the heatsinks. Please see timestamp for accessories. Comes with factory box. Asking $110 shipped or $90 local cash.

2024.05.15 03:02 Upbeat-Lettuce- The New Yorker publishes a long-form article on the trial of Lucy Letby and r/LucyLetcy goes into meltdown and removes (nearly) any mention of it.

BACKGROUND:
Lucy Letby is a British former neonatal nurse, whose 10 month trial from from October 2022 to August 2023 resulted in 7 convictions for murder of babies, and 7 convictions for attempted murder. The incidents occurred from 2016-2017. The trial was highly publicised (though not broadcast), and I would say the guilty verdicts were very broadly supported by the public. The UK government has commissioned an independent statutory inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the murders, and the hospital where she worked is being investigated.
Letby was found not guilty on two counts of attempted murder, and the jury was unable to reach verdicts on six further attempted murder charges. One of those 6 further attempted murder charges is being retried in June, and so the UK is under strict reporting guidelines as not to prejudice this case and any potential jurors.
THE ARTICLE:
Rachel Aviv published a long article in The New Yorker on May 13th titled 'A British Nurse Was Found Guilty of Killing Seven Babies. Did She Do It?' - link. (I can provide an archived link but wasn't sure about bypassing the paywall in the main text!)
Due to the reporting guidelines in the UK, this link will not work for the UK folk reading here!
It's an interesting read on the quality of the evidence allowed (and the current tragic state of the NHS), including comparisons to other notorious miscarriages of justice such as Lucia De Berk. If you ask me, it's worth reading in full, even though it obviously has a clear slant.
For example, here is a paragraph on Dewi Evans, who provided expert opinion in the case:
Other babies, he said, had been harmed through another method: the intentional injection of too much air or fluid, or both, into their nasogastric tubes. “This naturally ‘blows up’ the stomach,” he wrote to me. The stomach becomes so large, he said, that the lungs can’t inflate normally, and the baby can’t get enough oxygen. When I asked him if he could point me to any medical literature about this process, he responded, “There are no published papers regarding a phenomenon of this nature that I know of.” (Several doctors I interviewed were baffled by this proposed method of murder and struggled to understand how it could be physiologically or logistically possible.)
THE DRAMA:
The main drama can be found in this post - where a user asks if there is interest in forming a new sub, since:
Earlier this evening, I and at least 20 other individuals posted a recently published article on the LL case, each of us looking to have an interesting and open discussion. I won’t mention the article, but you probably already know which one it is.
Each of those posts was taken down by the mods, with the note that “juries determine the facts” and there would be no discussion about Letby’s potential innocence.
As an American, I find that attitude shocking. We have an Innocence Project here in the US precisely because juries are sometimes wrong. Justice is sometimes not served. Sometimes the police lie, or plant evidence. Sometimes eyewitness are mistaken. Sometimes medical examiners are not board certified and are less than competent. Sometimes evidence goes missing or is corrupted. There are so many reasons why innocent people are convicted every day.
So, I’m curious how many people here would be interested in a truly open forum where we think critically? In posting this question, I’m breaking no rules of the sub. The question is on-topic (Lucy Letby), it is in good faith and not trolling, and I am not actually asking you to comment on the issue of guilt or innocence....
The mod pinned comment is an immediate source of drama, beginning with:
Please go ahead and form another sub to discuss this poorly researched article. Those of us in the UK who have followed the case closely know there is nothing in your thinly veiled accusations.
also including this argument on free speech (is the UK worse than China??)
Arguments abound throughout the comment section, including here.
For anyone looking for actual discussion of the article (which I honestly was!!), check out medicine.

2024.05.15 02:59 EquivalentOrchid6118 NRF25L01 + PA + LNA works with UNO not with mega 2560

I am trying to test transmission of data using NRF24L01+ between an UNO R3 as transmitter and MEGA as reciever. The UNO is able to run the setup test code and send data. I managed to get the MEGA working on the setup test code but then it wouldn't recieve data. When I checked the MEGA with the test code again it failed to give the expected output and hasn't since.
I have tested the pins used for the NRF24 on the MEGA with buttons to see if they will repsond to input, and they do. The jumper connections feel a bit loose on the MEGA, but i am unsure if that is the problem as the same pins where it is loose, work with the buttons.
I also swapped the recievers used by the UNO and MEGA, the UNO still worked while the MEGA still didn't work. I also tried powering the reciever off the MEGA and have it connected to the UNO and the UNO still passed the test.
I am unsure as to what to do, I feel I have three options, 1) replace the MEGA for a new one, or 2) desoloder the headers and replace them, or 3) add a layer of solder to the jumper wire ends to thicken them up a bit.
Do I have other options? Neither board is new, and they are at least 4 years old. They have been unused for quite some time, neither board has presented any issues up until now, with the MEGA.
Here is a link to the test code I was using to verify if it was working: https://github.com/moggiex/NRF24L01-PA-LNA-Testing-Scripts/blob/masteStart_with_this_testing_script.ino
