Trip to a Fig Grower
Fig trees ready to go
I was talking to one of my friends at the pool last week. She asked me if we really could grow and harvest the figs in Ohio. From the latest research that I have done, what I discovered is that yes you can grow them and there is a potential that you could have 2 crops of figs if you grow them in a hot house for 2 crops. I feel comfortable that you should be able to grow at least one crop of figs here in Ohio outside. If you recall from last year this would have caused mom to ask whether I was right?
Last year in August I wrote a column about figs and in October I went to a meeting of the Mansfield Men’s Garden club. We did not meet at the fair ground as we usually do but went to this member’s home. As normal, a short time after I had written a column, and more research came up that may have changed my original column. Didn’t feel right to have a new column so soon after the original column. But after the current interview that I had with Brad Hamilton of Zenith Nursery, I knew that I had to write about fig trees again. Hamilton says that he is trialing 80 new varieties of figs and has had the best success growing Black Bethlehem, Chicago Hardy, Olympian, LSU Purple, Celeste, and Brown Turkey. Each week Hamilton has been averaging 20 figs going to somewhere across the US.
I mentioned last year that Brown Turkey Fig trees or Ficus carica have 850 other members to the family. Since I have seen a fig fruit growing on the fig trees this year inside the hot houses that Hamilton has, which means that the there are some different forms of pollination going on with these trees. When you find out that there are 850 members of the same family you should be aware that you won’t know everything about your family.
What I discovered is that these northern figs are self-pollinating. These figs don’t need any form of a pollinator to be able to produce fruit. I also discovered that our host for the October evening had been raising these figs for a few years for sale. This shrub/tree was easily able to reproduce itself from cuttings. Hamilton had cut these trees in these pots in two and placed them in some soil and peat moss. Figs that are done this way for a short period of time go through being in shock, but he expected to have plants ready for sale by the middle of June after making these cuttings in the middle of April.
Notably figs are easy to grow and one of the oldest fruits in cultivation. If you can find a good place in your landscape, it can live as long as 200 years. They are relatively low maintenance, and if the roots are allowed to grow the plant will usually focus its energy on producing top growth rather than fruit. To produce figs at a higher level you will need to keep an eye on the plant’s water needs. Too much or too little water can adversely affect fruit production. If after you have tested your soil and found that you have very little potassium in the test you are going to need to add potassium. Normally, you would plant your fig and fertilize it with the fertilizer that it needs. Make sure that you stop fertilizing 2 months before the last frost or you could damage the trees’ growth. One drawback to figs is that the roots of fig trees can be invasive. Make sure that you don’t place these trees near pipes, sidewalks, or driveways. What I find fascinating about fig tree roots is that they do better in our clay soil and won’t harm other trees’ roots as rapidly.
Figs are ideal for a homeowner, because they are self-pollinated and don’t need other trees to cross-pollinate. If you plant your fig tree in organically rich, well-drained, moist soils that are neutral to acidic they should do well with some clay. To maintain an attractive shape, you need to lightly prune each winter. Therefore, pruning in late fall after the main crop will allow the tree to recover and generate new wood for the next year’s crops. Normally like I have said Brown Turkey figs produce both early and late crops. If you mulch the roots to maintain moisture in the fall you should be able to sustain the fig during the winter. For the best results in Ohio ‘Brown Turkey’ figs require protection from winter temperatures below 10 degrees F. I recommend that you plant on a south or west wall, or on a stone wall or solid fence where the plant could benefit from the radiant heat or other protected areas in zones 5 to 7.
Hope you have a great stroll through your garden this week. If you have any challenges let me know and drop an email to me at [ericlarson546@yahoo.com](mailto:ericlarson546@yahoo.com). I shall make a blog soon and link it to my website at www.ohiohealthyfoodcooperative.org. Thanks for participating in our column.

2024.05.17 00:37 ReheatedTacoBell Geico demanding changes to property, need advice

Hello, this is my first post here. Today I received an email from our homeowners underwriters, Geico. Mainly I am just looking for any advice anyone might have who's been in this situation. I've heard that the insurance industry is on some fuck-shittery lately and are doing everything to not insure people. I am highly skeptical that we can have the work they're demanding scheduled within 2 months, let alone completed. We are in a large urban area where those types of services, especially in spring/summer, are booked out minimum two months.
They listed three points that they are demanding action on or they will drop the policy in two months. They are:
I've already replied to the sender and requested a copy of the inspection report. No idea if that's even a thing but figured might as well make them back it up and provide proof. How likely is it that they will work with me regarding timeline and/or funding? This is literally our first house, we've lived here for 7 years and this is the first time any of this has been an issue, which is why I feel that it's related to insurance trying to get out of insuring people. Thanks for any advice offered, and happy to clarify anything if there are questions.
Edit for grammar.

2024.05.17 00:32 BigBookest- Minecraft Class_7196?

I am making a 1.19.2 Mega mod pack and I was able to load into the Minecraft loading screen and everything but the game instantly crashes once I create a world. The crash report is below and the main error I get is "Mixin transformation of net.minecraft.class_7196 failed" I tried looking up what mod is under class 7196 but I can't seem to pinpoint the mod that is responsible.

2024.05.17 00:31 Alexander556 Is there a Branch-equivalent to tree root networks?

Since certain groups of trees can form a root network which helps all of them with survival, by sharing water, and nutrients, i wonder if there is maybe a type of tree out there which has developed a similar network above ground, by connecting branches? Is there a tree like this around which has evolved such a trait to adapt to a certain environment?

Found this starting in the backyard
Found this starting on a dead water oak tree we had cut down last fall. Any help on an id? We put some lions mane plugs in late last year but not in this spot. Located it south Mississippi.

2024.05.17 00:22 NoOneFromNewEngland The Horde

The menace has spread across the galaxy, and continues to, inexorably, do so.
The horde of clicking and clacking shells scrape across rocks; they pick their way up plant stalks; they jab their pointed feet into the very flesh of anything they can digest; they do these things as they warm across everything. Their ravenous maws devouring every digestible morsel that their claws can crush, rip, or shred.
The only worlds that have been safe from the horror of their infestation are those whose environments are so harsh that no life can survive on the surface. Even then, out in the darkness, they could have made hibernation colonies from which they could re-spread across the cosmos at any time.
Every star-faring race knows of them and, equally so, fears their reproductive cycles. Fears their emergence from a long sleep on the 23rd or the 29th cycle before the adults either hide themselves deep or die, leaving billions of eggs and larvae to grow until the next cycle.
No one, not even the vast horde itself, knows which world spawned their like nor is there any indicator of how long their menace has writhed across the blackness of space. For all of the sentients who have encountered them they, simply, are. They are a massive threat and precautions need to be taken in advance of them waking to preserve some semblance of the societies on the worlds that have fallen victim to the great armored monsters from the stars.
Children are taught, from a young age, to flee from anything resembling the monsters, even tiny versions, because where there is one, there are many. Where there are many, there are millions. Where there are millions there is a danger to all. Millions of tiny legs can stab through the youth of any sentient species, inducing intense pain and inflammation before the pincers start tearing the flesh from their bodies, devouring them whole in bites as the swarm covers hides them from any hope of rescue.
The littles ones can, quite easily, be crushed but doing so draws the attention of the horde and any who dare to crush one are soon victims of the many. They can be obliterated by projectiles, but their collective intellect quickly determines the origin and will overrun it to protect the horde as a whole. The individual monsters have no sense of self preservation, but their collective hungers for life eternal and will eradicate entire worlds to accomplish it… before harvesting the resources to flee to the blackness of eternity for another world.
There are histories that show worlds succumbing to the monsters in as few as 4 reproductive cycles, though the more technologically adept worlds have achieved stalemates with the horde such that neither can ever eradicate the other from the very essence of the planet. These worlds are the most prepared when the claws sprout from the ground, but they are also the ones that suffer the heaviest during the rampage of gnashing, armor-plated craws.
Most worlds succumb after a few hundred years, each cycle of hatchlings draining a bit more of the ecosystem into the growth of the horde. These worlds flee, often taking eggs with them to start the cycle anew on a new world, ravaging the escapees before any of them even have a chance to establish a new life.
The Galactic Council of Sentients has a standing policy of destroying any horde vessels that are encountered in deep space, but the odds of such encounters are extremely low. The GCS also has a policy of expending any effort, including exhausting the fuel supplies of entire fleets, to push any Horde ships found entering a system directly into a collision path with the star; the energy needed to create such delta-V is worthwhile as it has been the only way to protect worlds from an onslaught. The GCS also has a standing policy of leaving worlds with developing sentients alone and allowing them to develop their own star travel before revealing any secrets of the cosmos to them, EXCEPT when such a world is in direct line to be invaded by the Horde. The GCS’ one exception to the non-interference clauses for developing worlds is to warn them, and save them if possible, from a Horde invasion.
—---------
It was not possible to do anything but report the dire situation around Yellow Star 176J438B. The Horde rockships were slowly tumbling through space on a collision course with the third planet in the system, the only planet that supported any conventional life forms and one of the four bodies in the system that were known to be within range of the Horde’s tolerances.
Report and wait.
The only concern is, do we tell the sentients of this world, who have barely touched the sky around their world, that their end is nigh or do we allow them the peace of ignorance until the last moments of their existence?
Anthropologists have recommended both courses of action many times in history, all depending on the understanding of the world in question. If it is believed that the news of impending destruction will cause their society to implode and reign a special kind of horror down upon them of their own doing then it is always determined to let them survive in ignorance until the monsters fall to their world and begin devouring everything. If, however, their development arc indicates that they will band together and find some sort of collective solace in knowing that they are not alone in the cosmos AND that the others chose to warn them of an incoming apocalypse so that they can try to prepare then the GCS permits contact and warning. Either way, the planet is doomed, but how their destruction plays out is the only assistance that can be offered to them.
Yellow Star 176J438B, it turns out, is a bit of an anomaly as their culture is so heterogeneous that the anthropologists are not sure which is the best course of action. The GCS waits. The observing survey ship waits. The Horde tumbles ever closer.
—----
The survey ship reports in that the sentients of the doomed world have launched a probe at the Horde vessel. A primitive craft, equipped with many sensors and electronics to, clearly, try to study the inbound vessel but, also, armed with a nuclear warhead the likes of which no sentients in the entire GCS have ever build before. The probe vessel closes range on the Horde ship, two silent and soulless entities sliding through the emptiness of space between the worlds of this remote star system. The probe, using all of its resources to ascertain what the sentients of the world have seen in the heavens careens without power toward its destination which, just hours before the impact, alters the vector of its travel by a fraction of a degree in all axes, allowing the sentients’ probe to harmlessly pass it by, now destined to be lost in the vast emptiness of interstellar space.
There are but a few weeks left before the Horde lands on the world and the great devouring begins. The sentients of that world generate a vast increase in radio chatter about the mystery object. The survey team mourns for the future that they must witness.
The horde’s giant rock ship hurtles slowly, altering its spin and its trajectory in such a manner that it will perform a graceful landing on the remote world. A graceful landing followed by a vomitous disgorging of legs and pincers onto the land and into the seas of the world.
The sentients, aware that the giant rock is under some sort of power and, apparently, going to land instead of raining destruction on them in one giant collision, gather by the hundreds of thousands to see the unprecedented event in their history.
They watch as the rock rolls out of the heavens, shunning fire and smoke and blasting heat in intolerable waves, as it gently sinks halfway into the ground. The trees around it erupt in flame before a vast emission of CO2 extinguishes the fires, and the people within range. The corpses simply fall where they suffocated from the wall of gas.
The rock cracks open and the monsters emerge. Little ones, the size of the hands of the sentients emerge in the millions followed by monstrous beings of various sizes. The tiny critters swarm over the corpses of the dead, shredding their flesh and clothes and devouring them, leaving skeletal remains in their wake. The larger monsters swing their claws out and grab bystanders, crushing them in their great pincers or ripping them in twain, before gorging on them.
The sentients retreat.
The screaming and the cacophony of panic fill the skies nearby and ripple through the radio waves in the broadcasts of their world.
“Dem aliens are crabs!” one specific sentient is seen over and over again in various broadcasts in various frequencies and formats. “They’re monster crabs from outer space! Well, ya know what? We know how to deal with crabs where I come from.”
And with that the sentients of the world began to mobilize. A vast moat of fire was lain, and maintained, around the landing site so that the crabs could not flee across the land. The sentients brought in vast tanks of water and, to the shock of the anthropology observers, began heating the tanks of water.
The sentients used flying machines to grab the largest of the Horde and dropped them into the boiling water; they scooped up the littlest Hordlings by the millions and threw them into the water. The Horde thrashed and fought, but each individual’s death lessened their intellect and their ability to try to outsmart the beings of this world.
The sentients, after a short span of weeks, had eradicated all of the active members of the horde on their world. Each and every one was boiled or roasted and then, to the horror of the observers, eaten. The sentients of this world, it seems, had many similar forms on their world and found them delicious.
The report to the GCS included this information and the GCS begged the observers to make contact to learn of this technique.
The denizens of this backwater world had just managed to bring hope to trillions of other sentients across the galaxy that, perhaps, there was a way to fight back against the horde from the heavens.

2024.05.17 00:22 smulingen Inov8 trailfly or trailfly speed (or other?)

I've been enjoying my vivobarefoot shoes for 6M but I can't do runs or walk >2km on asphalt without pain or discomfort. It's about 3km to the trails so I'm looking for a "hybrid" shoe that works 'ok' on both trails and asphalt. My feet are wide around my toes while my ankle and heel are narrow.
Could the new redesigned inov8 trailfly be what I'm looking for? They have two models, the 'trailfly' and 'trailfly speed'. If anyone has tried them, which one feels more secure at the heel/midfoot? And is the heel-drop difference noticeable (4 vs 6mm)? Are these models somewhat water-resistant?
I live in Sweden and the trails are mainly in the forest. I do not run in muddy conditions but the ground is damp with some slippery obstacles when wet (mainly tree roots if I don't pay attention).
I've also looked into Altra's and Topo's but there are a lot of mixed reviews, but I'm open to any suggestions I can get.

2024.05.17 00:13 Cyberdelic420 Do you think this engine sounds like it’s running good?

Do you think this engine sounds like it’s running good?
This was my grandpas 03 Impreza that I got after he passed recently. He put quite a bit of performance parts into it and raced it pretty often up until a few years ago. I guess it started leaking a fluid into the track and hadn’t taken it back since. I haven’t been able to find any leaks after driving it to work for the last few weeks. My step dad says he thought he remembered my grandpa saying something about a blown head gasket, which I know these engines are notorious for, but the oil and coolant both shows no visible signs of contamination. There is the oil catch can though which does drain a milky mix. This could be from water contamination from combustion, or from cold starts maybe? Or could be a blown head gasket? But still no leaks onto road or drive way while operating the vehicle. I guess only way to know for sure is to drain oil pan and/or radiator and inspect all of the fluids?
This isn’t even what I initially am making this post about though. I figured after sitting for a few years it could use new spark plugs, I also see it running very fuel rich on the aifuel ratio gauge, and the exhaust smells like gas. There was a lot of back firing when in 3rd or 4th gear when I’d release the gas. It may be from the turbo, or tuning for better performance at higher RPMs perhaps. But I figured new spark plugs couldn’t hurt regardless. He had NGK R plugs in there with an arc gap at 0.029. I’m not sure if the R stands for racing or resistance as searches have provided mixed results. I put ACDelco plugs in that are supposedly gapped to this motor which does come stock with the turbo. But the gap is about 0.041 which is a lot larger than I initially figured it’d be. Maybe with direct injection and the eco tuning compression may be substantially different than stock.
With the new plugs the engine idles very rough around 500 rpm, and it almost sounded like there was a knocking from the bottom left piston which scared the hell out of me, though I hoped it was from the excessive shaking at the low rpm’s. After double checking connections and torque, it didn’t change. I put the old plug into that chamber giving suspected issues, and my problem seems to have been solved. Could just the one position have that different of a compression ratio to need the smaller arc gap when the others seem to handle it fine? I will be checking compression for each piston soon, but I haven’t yet. Now it backfires in the lower gears when releasing the gas instead of 3rd and 4th like before.
Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated, as I am an amature shade tree mechanic and I’d like to do right by my grandpa by keeping this thing running good and hopefully getting it back on the track someday.

Scrub your skin
Pluck the errant hair
Undo yourself
Sew your mouth shut
Collapse your breasts
Convex your spine
Buy this thing to shave you down
There
Perfect
One day I’ll suffocate under a pile of things I
don’t even care about
A bird that choked on plastic
I wish I knew what to do with this all
All this hurt inside me
I wish I could hold it in two hands
Say, “look, look at how heavy this is”
Wish I could open my fingers
Let it slip through
If only it were that easy
To let the pain out
If only I could bleed myself of self hatred
I would watch the leech bloat and see myself in it
Feeding on the thing that sickens me
Even in pain I try to make myself suitable
Palatable
Well darling you can’t consume me
I’m too sharp at the edges
I chewed you up and spat you out

I’m begging you to kiss me
But I’m looking for a fight
I’d gaze into the water in love with my reflection
If I fall asleep and drown
Know that I’m just looking for affection
I’ve always struggled against banality
Something in me likes the war
It’s a poison in the family tree
There are no benefits to being veteran of a battle against yourself
The only thing you’re left with are the scars and the survivors guilt
And memories of being in blazing fathoms

Help! My Ice Cream Bean sapling keeps wilting!
I sprouted this plant from a seed close to four years ago. It’s been my pride and joy for a long time, and used to be so full and beautiful.
This last winter was harsh, and even in the heated greenhouse where it lived it got quite cool and a bit too humid. A few of my plants developed fungal infections, which I treated as best I could and then worked to mitigate the humidity. I took all the sickly branches off of the ICB, and watched for any other issues.
The other plants that had fungus problems are doing great, but this guy is just not. I gradually had to remove every mature branch and leaf. As if that’s not enough, new leaflets will form and almost mature, but they’ll get this tissue-papery thinness to them, and then blister and wilt from there.
I’ve done a lot, looked into tons of treatments, but so far I can’t figure out what is happening to my poor little tree. I feel like it’s rallied a bit since I moved it inside under a grow light (in hopes that maybe the sunlight in the greenhouse is just too much? But it never was before…) but I’m seeing more wilty leaves now.
I’ve done very well with all of my houseplants and other potted tropical trees for the last few years, but I think I can’t fix this one on my own. I need help, please! I really don’t want it to die!
Other Info: Watered once a week or if top gets drier than I like. Was moved into this pot about 18 months ago when roots started to emerge from the smaller one it was in.

Keep or remove oak tree?
New home will be on well, there is a small oak tree about 15 feet away. Is it going to be an issue? Never had well water before. Want to keep oak to hide the well if possible.

Planning on planting the lilac tree we bought for cheap. Any advice to keeping it alive other than the obvious watering?

2024.05.16 23:52 Hearth_Roots My tree seems really sick, and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do for him?

General Location? -I live in Addison County, Vermont.
Is this a tree that can survive in my area/hardiness zone? -I believe so, as I see many other trees like this on my property and all over the State.
When was this planted? I unfortunately do not know when this tree was planted, as it was here way before I moved in.
How much sun is it getting? It gets a ton of sunlight, there are no other trees around it.
How much water does it get? I don't water it personally, we get lots of rain here and Sir Brushy here seems to do fine on that.
Was this a container tree? I'm not sure, I believe this tree just grew here many years ago on its own.
Is there plastic or landscape fabric? Chemical or construction application, drought? There are none, however it is next to a dirt road where they often dump a lot of gravel around. We use snow plows instead of salt on the road as well. We did have a long, windy winter and floods last year.
Additional Information: This is Sir Brushy, my favorite tree on the property. Starting sometime around November last year I've noticed that he was getting a bit brown on some of his branches, and they're turning red. I'm not exactly sure what species he is as he's been around longer than I have been, but I'd really like to be able to save him if possible. I hope this is enough pictures, I can take more if needed. We've been getting some nasty winds throughout winter and spring, so I'm hoping it's just some stress and can be remediated.
Thank you so much in advance!
Sir Brushy

2024.05.16 23:52 Coyote_Havoc Gallóglaigh: Fáilte Abhaile

First Previous
"Arran of many stags, the sea strikes at her shoulders, companies of men can feed there, blue spears are reddend amongst her boulders. Merry hinds are on her hills, juicy berries are there for food, refreshing water in her streams, nuts in plenty in the wood."
-Agalllamh na senorach-
"Don't say goodbye, wish me luck and a swift return."
Sorcha's words echoed in Robert's head as he watched the transports race the local star into the sky. Robert was the last to leave the cargo bay, wanting to remain in her presence for as long as possible. It was childish now that he thought of it, but it had earned him a long, deep kiss and a promise she would come back to him soon.
The port where they had been dropped off was located on a cliff overlooking the sea, and the golden light of dawn was echoed on the incoming waves. Beyond the tarmac, grass and bushes grew unhindered and thin trees towered over the terminal. Robert led the 449th toward the building which was built to resemble something out of a story book. A faux thatch roof hung over white walls resembling rough hewn stone while a clocktower with a black slate roof rose from behind. It was a beautiful example of deceptive architecture to give a weary traveler a sense of tranquility. The main concourse radiated the same fairy tale charm with shops lining the interior between cobblestone walkways and a grassy area with long wooden benches under manicured alder trees.
To the casual observer it was a welcome distraction from the busy day to day worries of modern life, to the former convicts who were used to concrete, reinforced walls and armed guards it was heaven on earth. Robert's troops ignored the benches to lay in the soft grass, a luxury unaffordable to the soldier and the convict alike, drawing looks of curiosity from travelers as well as shop workers and Robert had to fight the urge to join his men in this simple pleasure. Finding a seat on a bench, he sufficed himself by running his left hand through the soft blades where the unit colors had been planted.
"How long have you all been fighting?" A stranger asked.
"Feels like forever." Robert replied feeling a pang of guilt at not telling the whole truth.
"Just passing through?" The stranger inquired.
"Here to stay, at least for a while I hope." Robert said.
The strangers face brightened and his eyes reflected the smile that he wore.
"Fáilte Abhaile Óglaigh," He said before continuing to his gate.
Gallóglaigh was the only word Robert knew in Gaelic, and it became apparent that he would have to learn quickly as other people took notice of the rag-tag unit relaxing in the grass. Gallóglaigh meant young soldier he surmised, so óglaigh probably meant soldier, but 'saighdiúir' as well as 'laoch' was also directed at him and his men. Laoch sounded bad, but the people who said it smiled and shook hands with him. 'Saighdear' sounded like 'saighdiúir' and he had no idea what 'ghaisgich' meant, but every face told them how happy they were to meet them. 'Tha gaol agan ort' and 'Is Breà liom tú' found their way to his troops, mostly from women and a number of them tried to pronounce the words themselves which caused more confusion and a few impromptu lessons on pronouncing the words followed by a kiss on the cheek or forehead.
Robert was seriously considering reigning in his troops when he heard a more familiar language from a weathered older man with an amused smile.
"May I assume you're Colonel Grant of the 449th?"
"Yes sir." Robert replied.
"Perfect, I'm your escort, Brian McMurray," he said, "whenever you're ready please follow me."
Robert was able to contain the enthusiasm of his rowdy batch of heathens before they could caused any trouble, to the further amusement of their escort, and they wove their way through the port with the expert guidance of Brian McMurray who led them to several busses waiting just outside the passenger entrance. Troops were filed onto four of the vehicles and Robert was guided to an open deck with his officers while the lower deck of the front vehicle would carry the remaining troops. Brian sat in the front and swiveled his seat around to address them.
"I do apologizefor not having an air transport to meet you, but the MacSweeney family was able to charter these coaches at the last minute." Brian said as the coaches began to move.
"MacSweeney?" Hobbs said under his breath.
"Shut up Cyrano." Robert ordered.
"It's alright Colonel," Brian said, "Yes Captain, Laird Collin MacSweeney, Governor of Arran. Have you heard about him before?"
Hobbs eyes grew wide and he shook his head to indicate he hadn't. Robert turned a shade of red, Jacob and Derrick had the common sense to hold their tounges. Thomas on the other hand...
"Collin MacSweeney, son of Aaron MacSweeney, current lord of the MacSweeney family. Descending from Suibhne O'Niall, chieftain of Argyll. Aaron MacSweeney, settled Arran with the last Gaelic speaking people from Ireland and Scotland in order to preserve their heritage."
"Thank you,Captain Reed." Robert said, half relieved Hobbs had been bailed out, and half curious how Thomas knew so damn much.
"Rather impressive summary I must say," Brian replied, "anywho, the languages you were having trouble with and the history of this world will be made available to your troops, please do study it to prevent any unfortunate misunderstandings. We should be arriving in Brodick Castle shortly."
"If I may," Robert asked, "What is the history and population of Arran?"
"Certainly," Brian replied, "Arran Colony was started with the last 1000 Irish and Scots Gaelic people on Earth. With a bit of hard work and luck we settled the planet as an agriculture world, primarily ranching but expanding into other crops and fishing as well as natural textiles and some light mining and mineral refinement. Today Arran has a population of just over four million."
4 million, from the look of the small port town which hugged the harbor you wouldn't know it.
"And the port city?" Robert inquired.
"Brodick." Brian explained. "The harbor on this island is almost an exact match of Brodick on Earth, so the island was named Brodick as well as the city we just passed through and the MacSweeney family have called it home ever since."
"Brod..."
Robert shot Hobbs a murderous glance before he could finish and the rest of the trip was conducted in silence.
The chartered coaches pulled onto a gravel driveway in front of an amazing castle, built stone by stone into an exact replica of the one on Earth. Troops were ordered to disembark and form ranks below a massive tower that loomed regally over them. An equally impressive man exited to greet the arrived troops, wearing a fine wool suit and a red and black kilt shot through with yellow covered slightly by a leather sporran with polished silver trim. Robert waited for Hobbs to call it a skirt, and was thankful that he remained silent.
"Fáilte Abhaile." Laird MacSweeney said in a neutral tone.
"Apologies sir," Robert replied nervously, "but the men don't speak much Gaelic yet."
"No worries," Laird MacSweeney said, "but 500 does not a regiment make."
"No sir." Robert replied. "We are what's left from Diani unfortunately."
Laird MacSweeney nodded quietly. "We shall have to remedy that. Carry on."
Robert rendered a salute "On the orders of the Terran Military, The 449th Infantry Regiment has been reassigned to Arran SIR!"
Laird MacSweeney returned the salute and began to speak.
"I know who you are and where you came from. I expect all of you to act like civilized people, not the convicts you were previously. Think carefully how you conduct yourselves here on Arran. Housing accommodations for the command staff will be here at the castle, company commanders and enlisted will be housed temporarily in a hotel in the city. This is your second chance gentlemen, you will not recieve leniency from me or my people."
Laird MacSweeney paused momentarily to let the warning sink in.
"With that being said, you are owed three months of pay, which has already been taken care of, and I believe a week furlough is in order to acclimatize you to Arran. Be responsible and respectful, but please enjoy yourselves. Colonel Grant."
Robert nodded and rendered salute again before turning and shouting "DISMISSED!"
The unit cheered at their freedom, but returned the the coaches in a somewhat orderly fashion. Robert tensed slightly at the thought of what they might do if not under watch, and the hand placed lightly on his shoulder made him flinch inside.
"Calm yourself Colonel," Laird MacSweeney said in a gentle tone, "You have a lot of work ahead of you yo get your unit properly organized, but you've done an excellent job considering."
"Thank you sir." Robert replied. "If I might ask, what does Fáilte Abhaile mean?"
Laird MacSweeney chuckled as Robert turned to face him.
"We shall have to remedy that as well." Laird MacSweeney replied.
"Fáilte Abhaile means Welcome home."

2024.05.16 23:51 Stormincoming New plant owner, unknown problem

Howdy Reddit,
new (active-ish) Reddit user and newer plant owner. recently I purchased a Tineke rubber tree from a nursery, and he's been doing fine until one of the smaller, lower leaves developed a black spot and dropped. Underneath there are several small black spots, which have also begun to show underneath the other lower, smaller leaf. Other than the fallen leaf, the plant is fine, and the other leaf with black spots seems a little soft but is not yellowing, brown etc.
I've done some research and come to conclusion I have no idea what is going on. I thought it was fungus, as I am almost sure I overwatered when I watered four days ago, and then, after buying fungicide, realized that with blackspot the spots never appear on the underside of the leaf (and it didn't even look the same, so maybe I was just hoping lol). Now maybe thrips? although there doesn't seem to be any other symptoms of a thrips infestation.
The plant is next to a northwest-facing window, with blinds that I open for most the day and a tree that blocks half of the window, however I place the plant on the side which gets more sun. I watered it four days ago; as I mentioned above, pretty damn sure I overwatered him. Hoping he survives long enough to give me a second chance.
I've attached pictures of the leaf that dropped; the leaf that is still attached has only some small black spots underneath, which can be brushed away. (top of leaf: https://imgur.com/a/mDTybOV underside of leaf: https://imgur.com/a/D3QsXDd )
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank yall.

2024.05.16 23:42 stubenhocker How to properly clean a Trane XR16 side discharge AC unit?

Hi all,
I have an older version of this AC unit: https://www.trane.com/residential/en/products/air-conditioners/xr15-lp-ac/
It has a rubbeplastic like mesh coil guard on the rear side (facing out) of the compressor which basically seems to act as a net to keep all the tree fluff in my neighborhood in it. It won't wash out with a hose, and there seems to be a full separation between the inside condenser coils and the outside ones, because washing from the inside will not push water out the back.
Removing the mesh coil cover it seems quite difficult, as it has these one-way plastic screws securing it, which are difficult to pull out, and I'm super worried about breaking them and being able to get them back in.
Does anyone have any tips or tricks I might be missing to easily clean the condensers without taking the entire thing apart?
Because I already hosed it down, it just caked the fluff onto the fins, so I can't even vacuum them off any more.

Hey Guys, I made a video on Katsuyu and hope you guys could give it a watch to probably shed some light on Katsuyu as she is severely underestimated and downplayed to the point that she gets ruled out from versus battles even though she can always do something because she is so versatile! This is just a discussion about things Katsuyu can do and we can discussion anything else that she's capable of doing - I'm working on a slug sage mode video next
You can give the video a watch here as I went into more detail here - I tried to support my points with video evidence as best as I could but I couldn't find footage for everything - https://youtu.be/h6baI67D5A8

2024.05.16 23:37 kittenpasteco Pear Trees being ****s

Hi all, new here. I've been in the plant world since about 2011. Started getting into trees in 2019. I've got about 24 or so, now. The only trees giving me problems are my pear trees.
https://preview.redd.it/sx8vt9i36v0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60cf9e1e6c48309d27d30d1f9fa0b7daf3e05b38

I bought a 5-way European graft, last year, that has yet to leaf out. I took it out of the ground, to replace it with the next tree, and noticed much of the root mass is gone (slugs, probably). It's now in a planter, with rooting hormone. Scratch tested and nothing is dead yet. It's in a planter of PNW Best container soil, earthshine biochar, some extra perlite (because rainy months), and topped with a bit of dried moss to protect the soil.
I also just bought a 4-way Asian pear graft, a week ago. Both were bare root, when buying. The Asian pear is now wilting (in ground). I've done all I can for it - shade cloth, light mulch, daily watering, light rooting hormone. The tree is receiving 30 minutes of an alternating sprayer watering, every two days (the summers here are cloudless and dry) and a 5 minute direct watering on the day between those. When planting the asian pear, I saw the thicker roots had been cut by the nursery and the fine roots were extremely short. I should note that the nursery gave it to me in a pot with soil but told me it was bare root and just transplanted in December. It's sitting in a mix of soil that came from the nursery, my native shitty sand (so it can get used to the surroundings), earthshine biochar mix, fox farms garden soil and compost. My root flare is visible, above the mulch (it has an interesting inverted U shape). He's the tallest tree, in the middle. Photo taken before wilting. New photos when I get home.
I've never had trouble with other bare root trees - I've bare rooted columnar apples and maples but, from what I've read, pears are finnicky. What can I do to rescue them?
I'm located in Kitsap County, WA. My trees are in full sun all day (which is why I've built a shade cloth around the asian pear).
I have a non-grafted pear, on the east side of my house, that's doing perfectly fine. He wasn't a bare root baby, though.
The pictured planting space is new, so it's not competing for nutrients yet, despite the tight proximity. The planting bed was put together a bit over a month ago - all of the pictured columnar apple trees were in planters from 2019 until then.

2024.05.16 23:35 SuperCustodiam A Buyer's Guide to the AL Ships

This is a straight to the point buyers guide for people that are wondering if any of the AL ships are worth buying or not. I am here to give you an idea of what's worth, and what's not. I will rank them in descending order for convenience. Keep in mind that these are from my own opinions on the game: my word is not law. These are just my recommendations from my personal experience and a spur of the moment deal personally.

Best Pick: AL Montpelier

This is a premium version of Cleveland, the USN tier VIII CL. However, unlike the later AL premiums, AL Montpelier was unique in at least, a very minor way: She has tighter shot grouping due to a 2.15 sigma versus the standard 2.0 at the cost of slower reload at 0.5 sec slower (7 sec vs 6.5 sec). The result is overall consistent salvos, at the cost of just a little DPM that can be fixed with Adrenaline Rush and Top Grade Gunner, depending on how you build her.
Besides that, she also has un-nerfed version of radar, at a 30 sec vs 27 sec on Cleveland. That doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you run Consumable Enchantments and or Surveillance Radar Mod 1, you have a larger number that the percent based changes will take affect on. Essentially, with both the commander skill and 2nd slot upgrade, you get 39.6 sec vs 35.6 seconds on duration. So a radar build is not bad compared to Cleveland. Besides that, she doesn't have access to the catapult fighter consumable, but that is super seceded by radar and anyways so who cares.
And above all else, it is a Cleveland, which is IMO, a very competitively viable cruiser at tier VIII, with it's very small citadel, thin profile / narrow beam that leads to a lot of over-penetrations, good DPM, good concealment, and good AA. It really only lacks in the speed, gun range, and shell flight time problems, which can be remedied with skill and positioning.
As far as the commander voice acting, Rie Takahashi voices Montpelier. If you do not know who that is or do not care, and just want to know if the commander's voice is annoying or not, then be happy that she isn't overtly grating compared to some of the other commanders you can get. I find her rather composed, cool, and relaxed, fitting the trope of kuudere, if you even know what that means.
TLDR: Premium Cleveland with higher sigma, slightly lower RoF, Longer lasting radar.

Runner Up: AL Sovetsky Rossiya

This is a premium version of Sovetsky Soyuz, the VMF (Soviet Navy) Tier IX BB. Like Montpelier, she is slightly unique to her tech tree counterpart, bar being premium, by having standard battleship dispersion (USN, Royal Navy, German, etc.) instead of Russian BB dispersion formula that gets way better inside 15km. She does also have 1.8 sigma versus 1.7 sigma, for slightly tighter shot grouping. So, while Soyuz excels at mid range, Rossiya excels at long range, which does reasonably well considering the average high tier meta these days.
Other than that, you retain all the upsides of Fast action Damage Control Parties, the tough hull design of the Sovetsky Soyuz. The only other thing you DO NOT get is the AA, as she has the Hull A of Sovetsky Soyuz, and in turn has worse AA overall. In fact, she has such bad AA that only Musashi beats her out in having worse AA for Tier IX battleships. So yeah, CVs that know their targets will have free reign on you, so stick close to allies in CV matches.
Now a I'll be honest with you, Rossiya is not a super competitive BB at tier IX, so this choice is really just down to being different in few ways instead of blatant copy paste. Really, only AL Montpelier is the only super competitive option here. So above all else, Rossiya is a side grade if anything and you should not fear of having FOMO for not getting her. Besides, she's not an historical ship that is going to get removed because it was OP, so fret not (COUGH COUGH MUSASHI, COUGH COUGH ALASKA, COUGH COUGH MISSOURI).
Lastly, the commander is voiced by Manami Numakura. I can really only characterize her as cool, tough, deep voiced anime woman archetype. I dunno really how to explain it that well, so I apologize for anyone that likes her due to my poor description.
TLDR: Premium Sovetsky Soyuz Hull A with 1.8 sigma and standard battleship dispersion.
OK, with those two out of the way, I want to put a disclaimer here that the next ships are purely optional and not super worth it IMO and really only selected for being different than the rest, I.E. not something that is currently offered in other ships / premium ships already in-game.

Optional 1st Pick: AL Prinz Heinrich

This is a premium version of Prinz Heinrich, the tier VII german battlecruiser of the Ersatz Yorck class. She is a 1 for 1 copy of Prinz Heinrich: no special differences here besides premium benefits.
Now, while she is not unique in any way, she is not a bad battlecruiser for tier VII standards. This mainly comes down to the 50mm deck plating she has in a tier wrought with battleships with just 26mm of plating on their decks. Really, any tier VII battleship that has more than 27mm of plating is really competitive in this tier, simply because they don't get overmatched or full-penned by HE. It's sort of why Scharnhorst '43 is so popular and good, since she doesn't get chunked for 10k when hit by 15 in + guns (380mm guns for ya'll metric nerds).
Besides that, she's not slow as hell, going at a decent 28 knots, has 15in guns herself, has fast acting DCP, and is the first ship in the german battlecruisefast battleship line that gets that sweet improved secondary dispersion formula, which despite the 9km max range, means that she has free DPM to let the game play itself essentially. Combined with torpedoes, she can bum rush many slower and weaker battleships that the german battlecruiser line is famous for. And on top of all that, she also has hydro for better pushing to see torpedoes earlier, or push smoked up ships.
Now for some cons, the guns, while using battlecruiser dispersion have an awful 1.5 sigma, so your shot grouping is... bad. Do not be surprised if a lot of your shells in your salvo get a mind of their own. Besides that, she's on the below average end of HP for tier VII, at 56k. Also, she does have 25mm bow and stern. She does have a 30mm extended belt (colloquially known as an ice breaker), which is followed by 120mm extended belt, that protects the lower portion of the ship from overmatch bar 18in guns that she MIGHT face in the likes of Georgia, Sun Yat Sen, Musashi, and Tsurugi, and Adatara. Still, that doesn't mean she is immune from overmatch, as the odd shell can still get through her bow and stern and chunk you, so do not bet on it 100%.
Now that is for the most part, the review. However, for any true fans out there, they know that Prinz Heinrich from AL is actually a P-Class cruiser, AKA Schill in this game. Since Schill was a limited time ship that required whaling for her, and that wargaming dropped the ball and just did "Oh this ship has the same name! Here ya go!" then you know how much this kind of sucks. If you just like Prinz Heinrich, and want her as a premium, you can ignore this tidbit, but for any true fans that DO NOT have Schill, you're shit outta luck.
As far as commander goes, the voice actor, Hiyori Nitta, does a wonderful job characterizing a carefree and bubbly character. As previously mentioned, I recommend putting her on Schill if you really care about game accuracy, that is, if you even had Schill to begin with.
TLDR: Premium Prinz Heinrich copy-paste. Get it only if you really like Prinz Heinrich (the ship) which is actually pretty good for its tier, and want a premium version of it, or Prinz Heinrich as the character.

Optional 2nd Pick: AL Shimakaze

Hoo boy, this one might be controversial. This is a special ship (NOT a premium ship) of IJN DD, Shimakaze.
Shimakaze really needs no introduction. It is the old school torpedo boat that coined the phrase "Torpedo soup" or at least contributed to that phrase. It can put 3x5 23k damage, 12km Type 93 long lance torpedoes into the water. It has some of the best concealment for her tier, getting down to 5.6km surface detect, and good speed at 39 kts (42 kts when speed boost is active). It has been here since the games launch, and well, admittedly, or at least in my opinion, has seen better days.
Still, while some other DDs might have powercrept her a little, you can't mistake the fact that a well played Shimakaze can terrorize a team that lacks the tools to pin her down. Even if that is seldom the case most of the time (48% win rate on NA out of 8 million battles), the ship still has strong tools when played to it's strengths. 23k damage torpedoes are no joke... if you get hit by them at least, as they have a pretty awful average reaction time of ~9.35 sec (according to wows ship builder). Now, this can be sort of remedied with building for torpedo speed, getting torpedo tubes mod 1 and swift fish to decrease that time to ~8.5 sec, but that's still far above the average of 7.8 sec most torpedoes have in other nations. Still, if you get the right angle, devstriking a full HP battleship is not uncommon if you get a perfectly lined up shot. Thing is, it takes WAY more skill and positioning than you think it does, especially considering that most top tier players sort of know what they're doing, and that a lot of top tier ships can run hydroacoustic search these days.
Combined with the fact that she has some of the worse gun DPM of any tier X DD, and has fairly low HP for the tier, it can be fairly hard to play this ship unless you get just the best matchmaking ever. It's a real feast or famine type ship, which I would say summarizes most of the IJN Shimakaze line in general, bar maybe the mid tiers. All this really means is that Shimakaze is NOT the most competitive DD at tier X, as arguably many other nations have better torpedo boats, or better yet, opt for hybrid boats that can defend themselves fairly well, such as the Pan Euro DDs. Still, as mentioned earlier, if played to her strengths, she can be a good ship, but all I am arguing for is that she is not a meta ship, at least in my opinion.
Now, onto the whole Special Ship thing. Yes, this IS a tier X ship that can be bought for money. And YES, this is like the ARP Yamato deal, allowing noob whales to skip to tier X and forgo all the blood sweat and tears that goes into grinding to top tier. And YES, IT'S A SHIMAKAZE, THE TIER X NOOB MACHINE. I DO NOT HAVE HIGH HOPES FOR MANY AL SHIMAKAZE PLAYERS EITHER. With that out of the way, what benefit do you get for getting a special ship version of Shimakaze?
Well, to start, Special ships essentially have the premium bonus package already baked in, I.E: +50% Credits, +100% Ship XP, +100% Commander XP, +100% Free XP. On top of that, you also have a reduced repair cost compared to a standard tier X. Besides that, you can freely swap commanders onto this ship like a premium ship with no retraining required, making it a good trainer. These are the ONLY 2 reasons that make this ship more economically viable compared to Shimakaze. While the bonus package on Shimakaze can achieve 1 of these 3 effects, the other two, reduced repair cost and free commander swapping, puts this above standard Shimakaze as a result.
So, unfortunately, This is a slightly better Shimakaze. So if you REALLY like Shimakaze, and want a premium version of it, well, here it is, for a lot of goddamn money. Like $100+ expensive. Go figure ya know?
Also, the commander is voiced by Saori Hayami.
TLDR: Special Ship verison of Shimakaze. Take if you are a whale have a lot of expendable income to burn, AND really like Shimakaze (The ship), and or really like Shimakaze (the AL character).

Optional 3rd Pick: AL Yukikaze

AL Yukikaze is a similar version of the IJN DD Kagero, but with F8 torpedoes and no option for torpedo reload booster.
Now, this is the last of the semi-unique AL ships, as every other one has been copy-paste. Yukikaze at the very least is different in that she has F8 torpedoes. These differ than Kagero's choice by having less range, (8km vs 10km), higher damage (21k vs 20k), faster reload (104 sec vs 112 sec), and higher speed (76kts to 67kts) which also leads to a better reaction time of ~8.8 sec vs ~9.45 sec.
Now, does this make Yukikaze better? No, not really, as 8km is rather short range for high tier standards. It does make them almost break past ~8 sec reaction time with a full torpedo speed build, the best of any type 93 torpedo, but combined with the fact that it has no other differences in gun handling, DPM, HP, and consumables, I find this shorter ranged torpedo to be a high risk high reward setup, which already exacerbates high tier IJN DD gameplay further than it already is, being so heavily feast or famine.
I can really only recommend this ship if you really like Kagero for whatever reason and really like the 8km F8 playstyle. That and if you like the history of the ship and or like the character of the ship, voiced by Kana Yuuki, despite how annoying and self aggrandizing her character is made out to be.
TLDR: Kagero but 8km F8 torpedoes.
OK, now for the ships I really do not recommend at all for varying reasons. The reviews are going to be more brief from here on out.

Skip 1: AL Cheshire

Only get this if you really, REALLY want to get Cheshire right now. Currently, regular Cheshire is off sale, and cannot be obtained. For whatever reason you think you might need Cheshire, this is the only way to obtain her at the moment in AL form. Which more than likely means that if you want her, you are more than likely a fan of the AL character, as the ship itself is pretty bad. Kind of polarizing given that Cheshire in AL is pretty meta, and her in WoWs she's pretty solidly in D tier for competitiveness.
She is essentially a worse Albemarle, having no Spotter Plane, and garbage DPM for the tier. Really, the 9.2 in guns really only offer 59mm of pen vs 34mm, and better AP pen with overall flatter flight times, but not by much. The armor is Okayish, but trust me when you will get smacked through your bow and stern often, as you have a stepped citadel that if you get overmatched through either direction, you WILL get citadelled. While you get that 50% cit and hull repair party, it really doesn't matter that much when it happens so often, or you just get straight up dev striked. Combined with the lack of spotter plane, that 16km gun range will feel really short, especially when you are bottom tier.
You can at least be happy that the AA she has is up to par in how she is in AL, as it's best in class for her tier. Well, mostly, but her Flak Count is above average at 6+1, and combined with always having defensive fire, I recommend getting the commander skill Focus Fire Training, so you get that +1 flak cloud for 8 in total, which combined with Defensive fires flak buff, those flak bursts will do 7k a pop, Which is the equivalent to instantly destroying about 7 to 3 planes depending on the type if they run into it while DF is active.
Besides that, the commander is voiced by Shizuka Ishigami, and well, pretends to be a catgirl.
TLDR: Get this if you really really, REALLY want Cheshire and you don't have one, or because you really like the AL character.

Skip 2: AL Hornet

This is just Hornet. You can get her cheaper with a 25% discount coupon. It's also a CV, which I imagine is not everyones cup of tea.
The commander is voiced by Nozomi Yamamoto, and personally, I enjoy the happy go lucky characterization she has. This might be the ONLY reason you want to get Hornet, that or because you like the cool skin the ship has, and or the free 10 point commander.
TLDR: Get regular Hornet with 25% discount. ONLY buy this if you love AL Hornet (the character) to pieces.

Skip 3 & 4: AL Azuma and AL Agir

These two are just Agir and Azuma, coal ships, that you can get absolutely for free. They are also not really the best Tier IX cruisers anyways, as Azuma is super vulnerable to battleships, and Agir doesn't match up to the likes of other large cruisers at this tier.
That said, I can only imagine you getting these ships for the same reasons for Hornet, and that is because you are a fan of the AL characterization of these ships, as Azuma is voiced by Kiyono Yasuno, and Agir, Ayane Sakura. Or you just like the ship skins.
TLDR: Get Azuma and or Agir for free with Coal. ONLY buy this if you love AL Agir / AL Azuma (the characters).

BONUS: Commander Pack

Hahaha no. Unless you really love AL and don't mind by dropping... looks at price... 100$+ USD and getting a ton of fully voiced commanders, then go for it. The only other reason would be because you are a fresh player and need 10 point commanders for most of the nations in this game, which is really only useful if you need say concealment expert on destroyers for example, then sure, go for it if you find that to be an OK option.

EDIT: BONUS BONUS: AL Littorio

I forgot AL Roma, I mean AL Littorio is also a thing, and on an 80% sale.
Anyways, Roma herself sucks.
The guns have so much muzzle velocity that you will overpen targets 50% of the time. Combined with the Italian / french dispersion, which is one of the worst battleship dispersion formulas for battleships. So, they are fairly inconsistent guns as a result. Still, if the guns behave, they are pretty mean, as they have a lot of penetration for 15 in guns, on par with some of the best penetration for tier VIII battleships. They also have the best damage for 15 in guns for the tier as well. The gun handling is at least not total crap, as they have 30 sec 180° rotation time, which is above average for most BBs. The forward gun angles are decent too, at 31°, but her rear angles are worse at 40°.
Speaking off, the armor is fairly good at a first glance, with 45mm deck, 70mm deck sides, and a fairly small superstructure which has extra protection from her 90mm dual purpose guns 40mm barbettes and the conning tower. The citadel is slightly above water, but it is not a turtleback, so you WILL get punished for being broadside, considering the armor is 375mm + 40mm of armor or protection. The 40mm inner plate is not overmatchable at least, which is a small plus. At least, compared to the tech tree Tier IX and Tier X that have 25mm plates under their turtleback.
She also gets points for good concealment for her tier, being among the best, at 13.39km base, 11.7km max.
Overall, she's... a tough and sneaky nut to crack, unless she shows broadside. The guns themselves are a massive dirce roll each time, and kind of suck. When they behave though, usually at range, they are amongst the best 15in guns at tier VIII.
Oh and Roma is voiced by Yui Kondou.
Oh wait. This supposed to be Littorio. Whoops. Then that would be Shizuka Itou that voices her. And Yes, if you didn't know, this is for all intensive purposes SHOULD be AL Roma. The simple version of this is that the Vittorio Veneto class all had striking unique features that set them apart at a glance. There was a controversy a while ago about AL Littorio literally being Roma with a skin, as if you demout the camo, the Roma nameplate is still there. Same goes for our Tech Tree Vittorio Veneto, as it is too, just Roma. In fact, the upcoming Spanish Tier IX premium Victoria will be the first version of Roma that is somewhat different. But honestly, it doesn't count.
TLDR: It's a freaking Tier VIII BB on 80% off. Get it while it's hot I guess. Besides that, she has poor gun handling and accuracy, but strong armor (when angled), and good concealment.
