2024.05.16 23:56 LogicGam3z HT A9 + Sony A75L + UB820 +Yamaha 5.1 stereo setup

I just bought a A75L, and love it. Currently have it hooked up to my 5.1 Channel yamaha receiver 5 speakers + Sub and bought a Panasonic UB 820
I also Just bought a HT A9 as I want to experience Atmos on 4k UHD DVDs.
I currently have my UB820 connected Via HDMI 2.1 to my TV outputting sound and video in one channel to the TV and optical from TV to the receiver for sound.
Can I connect UB820 ( has 2 hdmi out ports, one port for video and audio out and another that is audio out only)to the HT A9 receiver Via the second audio out on the Ub820 to the HDMI audio input for the HT A9, and then either run optical directly from the UB820 to the yamaha receiver for Subwoofer use/ additional channels or from the TV to the Receiver with optical.
Can I essentially have 2 simultaneous audio output coming from the TV or the DVD player to circumvent having to buy a 600$ sony sub when I already have a great one.
This is in an enclosed medium sized room 13x 14 with 10 foot ceilings'

Steam has been a BAMF althroughout though maintaining open communication and for even making the automatic refund in the first place.
As to Sony, I guess they just hate money.

Got an untested 4k player at a thrift store for $11 and when I went home and plugged it in this popped up. Google hasn't helped me and none of the buttons on the device work. I don't have a remote so I don't know what the other options do, or if I can even reach them. Is it worth it to even get a remote or is this thing busted? I don't really know what any of this means.

2024.05.16 23:41 Important-Bar7592 AVR menu screen flicker/no Atmos

I’m new to this hobby and just set up my first 5.1.4 HT and am having the following two issues:
  1. My AVR’s GUI menu flickers like crazy on the tv. As soon as I play a blu ray or stream through my ATV (both connected directly to my AVR) the video plays normally with no screen flicker.
  2. I can’t seem to get Dolby Atmos working. Both my blu ray player and ATV output audio in the menus as well as previews but as soon as I launch a movie, it goes silent. I have to select the 5.1 audio track in the blu ray menu to get audio. Atmos tracks are silent and there isn’t an Atmos option in my listening modes.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this?
For reference, my setup consists of: LG G2 Onkyo RZ50 Panasonic UB820K
Any feedback appreciated.

2024.05.16 23:34 LaserGuyVII While there's still no truly perfect streaming device, I think it's time to stop telling people to "just buy a Shield". Please offer any corrections to my write-up as we try to figure out the best device to be recommending people in 2024.

Welcome to my Plex Client TED Talk

First off, yes, I know that most people don't need the "supremely ultimate" streaming solution (perfect Dolby Vision w/ FEL + Lossless audio + third-party streaming app compatibility). The answer is ultimately hardware and user-dependent. That being said, we get a dozen posts here a month asking what the best all-in-one streaming device is for those who do want Dolby Vision/lossless audio, and most of the time they are either recommended the Shield or an Apple TV from what I can tell. For reasons I'll get into and you may or may not already be well aware of, neither of these do both of those things perfectly (or at all).
That's what makes it so hard to do your own research on this particular subject - there's too much confusion about which devices can do what and too much outdated info on Plex and elsewhere. On top of that people so often come out as blatantly rude defending their device of choice because "there's no other option", which discourages discussion. I had to spend hours upon hours combing through old Reddit threads, forum posts, technical spec breakdowns, and ultimately gamble on purchasing devices myself before I found truly definitive answers that I didn't have to triple guess.

NVIDIA Shield

First off, let's credit the Shield for its longtime reign on the throne as the ultimate all-in-one streaming device for Plex. It handles lossless audio, has a nice interface, and supported Dolby Vision for quite a while there for both remuxes and streaming apps. However, it is getting old, still costs around $200 USD, and there are an increasing number of DV movies with FEL layer (this spreadsheet isn't a complete list) with more coming out every month. Some studios now release ALL their UHDs with FEL.
The Shield doesn't handle these FEL rips properly, and even if you can live with the red tint it adds to FEL movies, we are primarily a group of tech-savvy users and enthusiasts with theater setups with equipment in the thousands of dollars range. We shouldn't be recommending a rather pricey 5-year old device and sometimes glitchy streaming device with a blatantly obvious visual issue to people who could do better with their viewing experience and their wallets (I may end up eating these words later). Dolby Vision and OLED is becoming more commonly used as people upgrade their TVs - this is not a niche enthusiast technology anymore even if the average consumer still doesn't understand exactly DV is/does. Having the red tint isn't something that everyone with a Shield streaming FEL remuxes should have to live with.

Devices without Lossless Audio

There are several other devices that are consistently recommended here that don't support lossless audio in Plex, including but not limited to:
Please stop telling people that these are capable of blu-ray quality lossless audio. They are not.

Possible Solution Device(s)

So, where does that leave us? There are some enthusiast-level options like Dune and Zidoo players. I don't know a ton about them, but I know they are compatible with lossless audio codecs. Someone else will have to comment if they are capable of playing back FEL layer natively (not sure if they have a secondary decoder or not). The Ugoos AM6B Plus with CoreELEC seems to be the only device in the world I have seen online of that can do FEL perfectly and works with Atmos and DTS:X lossless audio.
Still, I know these types of players are not as user friendly as a Shield or ATV and can be a pain to use normal streaming apps on. Plus they cost as much or more than the Shield does.
That leaves us with one or two other devices depending on how you look at it. The most cost effective in my opinion? The New 4K Fire Stick Max that released about 6 months ago. With 20 minutes of setup that anyone here could walk someone through, this device gets you 95% of the way there. There are still caveats to consider. Still, I believe that this is the single best device on the market for those who want a reasonably modern UI/UX (amazon toxic ad-fest aside), use regular streaming apps in addition to Plex, need compatibility with all DV profiles + FEL and lossless audio, AND most importantly, want the best bang for their buck (currently available for ~$35 USD with an Amazon coupon). It even supports HDR10+ for the tiny amount of UHDs that support that.
It is by no means perfect, though. Let's look at the 4K Fire Stick Max caveats:
It remains to be seen if the Shield's red tint issue is worse than whatever color problems crop up when converting DV P7 -> P8.1 on the Fire Stick Max with Kodi's feature set. Not even considering that the Fire Stick is $150+ less, I'd rather go with occasional minute coloring issues versus a blanket red push on my entire movie.
The importance of the lack of ethernet depends on the user's wifi setup. I have a 3 year old Wifi 6 Google router and I can watch any 4K rip I've thrown at it, up to the 100mb/s range without any problem. The Fire Cube 3 is basically a beefed up Fire Stick Max, so this is an option if you absolutely must have ethernet, but you'll need a $10 USB to ethernet adapter. The USB port is only 2.0, but you can still get 250-350 MB/s with an adapter, more than enough for streaming anything.
Another potential device I have not tested is the Amazon Fire Cube 2, which supposedly can sideload CoreELEC and thereby gain full FEL/lossless capabilities. I cannot verify that, so if someone can speak to it please do. Even so, it is an older device and the setup requires at least a little more work than the Fire Stick Max/Cube 3.

Conclusion and Other Considerations

Ultimately, there isn't a perfect device that can do absolutely everything, especially for the average user, and there's literally nothing in existence that can do it all using the native Plex app. If Plex on the new Fire Stick Max worked out of the box, then it would be near-perfect, but the addition of needing Kodi adds some one-time complication.
Even if you use the Ugoos AM6B+, it seems like you may have a hard time with third-party streaming apps despite its proficiency with 4K UHD remuxes. The Amazon devices have many pitfalls and require some extra setup, but the cost of the Fire Stick Max in particular makes it (in my opinion) easier to look past some of them. $50 or less is a lot more reasonable than $200 when recommending a device.
As for what device to recommend to others, it's going to be a mixed bag. Ultimately it depends on what the user needs as I mentioned in my first paragraph. If they only care about Dolby Vision and not lossless audio, just using a Smart TV's apps may be best. If they want lossless but have a Samsung TV and therefore can't use Dolby Vision, a Shield still may be their best bet, or a PS5/Xbox. It all depends.
I personally only use the Fire Stick Max when I watch a rip of any disc I own that has DV+FEL (or HDR10+). If I watch anything else on Plex like a regular blu-ray rip, a 4K rip with just HDR10, or watch something in a different streaming app, I use my Series X, which can do HDR10 and lossless audio just fine.

I hope that this is a helpful post and sparks some interesting discussion for those who stuck with me to the end. Please offer any corrections to my claims, though I do feel as though I have researched this pretty exhaustively short of spending thousands to buy and test every possible device against one another myself. I hope it helps anyone who comes looking for an answer to the question of which device(s) to get for their Plex setup.

2024.05.16 23:32 TheSchlooper Steam's Brave to have User Reviews so close to the Buy Button

Steam's Brave to have User Reviews so close to the Buy Button
I tend to browse around games on steam quite frequently when I'm just hanging out with my buddies in Discord, and it's always interesting to see how transparent Steam is compared to other platforms. I looked at Uplay/GOG/Epic Games and Origin store fronts and none of them give the power to the players as much as Steam does. The one that barely comes close would be GOG as it gives a space for player reviews at the very bottom, but that's really it in comparison. Just another weird social part of Steam platform's ability to leave reviews on products where the review score is entirely in the peoples hands, and yet it directly affects entities and their investors' opinions on them. Competitors platforms don't really let you leave a more or less unfiltered opinion about a game the way Steam does. It's pretty cool though - like you go to a movie theatre and when you're buying your ticket, you're not immediately presented with a bunch of reviews of the movie before you pay to see it. You go to a restaurant and you don't see the reviews right before you make your order (usually).
But on Steam, right on the same page where you click buy, you see metrics they provide for you in the same glance.
Let's take Destiny 2 on Steam and on Epic Games Store for example.
Destiny 2 on Steam
Your experience when "buying" or "choosing to play" Destiny 2 on steam is very closely placed next to the review score. Not only does it include a worded version of how positive the reviews are, but it also includes the review count, sorted by Recent and Overall scores.
Compare this to Epic Games storefront:
Destiny 2 on Epic Games Store
Not only is it totally further away, but also includes drastically less information. To even get more information on how the overall opinion is, you'd have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page to see how many reviews are given.
More information about Destiny 2 on EGS

Even then, the information isn't even necessarily by gamers on the Epic Games Store, as they are outsourced by OpenCritic and leaving a review on said site would require a player to make an account and go through all that process just to leave their opinion. That makes the reviews generally curated by those who's career is to leave reviews to begin with.
The other cool thing is that Steam actually lets you leave a review on EVERY purchase, not just the main title.
Like how on Epic, you can't review the Shadowkeep Expansion of Destiny 2
Destiny 2: Shadowkeep on EGS, with no review score

Yet on Steam, you can see how poorly received this particular expansion was:
Destiny 2: Shadowkeep on Steam, review scores included.

Anyhoo, Just thought it was interesting as I've seen various games review bombed over the years for whatever thing happened by the devs, said on twitter, or Sony decision and it was Steam's review score being shown.

Happy Ub820 day
After two Sony x700s that froze I bought the Panasonic, finally! Sony should be ashamed of themselves flogging overpriced paperweights. You shouldn’t have to troubleshoot a new player to stop a disc from locking out. Besides, what makes this purchase even more sweeter? Only cost £220. I wrote to the retailer saying how disappointed I was sending my previous units back. Hoping for a small discount on the Panasonic, they instead refunded me the difference between the two players. A cool £129. Not bad. Don’t ask, don’t get. First disc through it - Arrows Mary Shelly Frankenstein. Looks awesome, no issues with freezing, all is well.

2024.05.16 23:11 ProductOfHostility Commercial Construction?

Looking for some feedback/advice.
So I'm considering a role as a biz dev rep in commercial construction for a GC in a specialized niche. They are essentially a start up sister company of a well known brand in their niche. They can do design, development and construction at the national level.
It's a brand new position and they've never had a "sales" guy before. My background is in real estate adjacent sales (inside sales, recruiting, residential land acquisitions and development) for the same employer over 9 years but I was always the first sales guy in each of the three business units I worked in so that part doesn't scare me.
I am however having trouble conceptualizing what realistic OTE and KPIs would look like. They want someone who excels at cold calling so that's a ✅ for me. Besides looking for opportunities with large players in their niche, I have a feeling that the majority of my time should be focused on cold calling architectual design firms and developers to try and get on their bid list when a project comes up. And of course networking on LinkedIn. But outside of that I'm not sure where I would place the bulk of my focus.
With their pay structure ($40K-$60K base + 1/2% of gross contracts) I'd likely need to get the opportunity to bid on 20 projects a month if their bid hit ratio isn't any better than 10% and their average deal size ends up being on the lower end.
Does 20 bids a month sound remotely realistic in the GC world?
Are architects generally open to new bidders?
Bonus points of anyone has any great advice on how to scrape Google for approved site plans or knows of a company that sells data for city or county plans in the works.

2024.05.16 23:09 didntwantnewaccount CD Walkman produces a constant hum through headphones?

I recently got into CD collecting a little over a month ago and bought a Sony D-E225 to listen to them with (since I almost always use headphones I thought a portable CD player would be best). It works almost perfectly, the only issue is a static-y hum/buzz that I can only hear during quiet parts of songs. It comes through my headphones, not noise from the mechanism, so it gets louder if i turn up the volume. Not an issue with my headphones since they sound alright plugged into other devices. Not an issue with any particular CD, I've listened to several. Turning off skip protection doesn't change anything. Does anyone know what caused this and if I can do anything about it?

2024.05.16 23:08 Superbly_Humble Group game design (UPDATE 1) & sub news

Hey friends!
Looks like the Deck Building Card Battle (20 Card Decks) won yesterday. Thank you for participating in the vote.
Because this is the first group game, it will be very casual, as this will all be done on Reddit. I'll enable our chat to help out, but I'll need your help to keep people from abusing it. For the future, I want to have a discord server where we can interact better, but that's a slow process for me (anyone with experience and a desire to help please DM me).
I'll start out by really introducing myself; I'm Magnus, a game designer in Vancouver, Canada. My company, BRB Games, has been a subsidiary of a large game company, and my employees and I primarily designed games for ages 3-12. I have worked on a few other projects as a consultant, mainly doing logic, core design, testing, etc. In November we found out cutbacks were incoming. Due to a tight contract, I've had a second job the last few years as a lead robotics designer (among other hats) to cover my costs, plus top-up my own employees at BRB. I was often doing 16 hour days, juggling way too much, ontop of a 3 hour commute if I even went home. We all talked and closure was the best choice. Most of my employees were picked up right away, or transitioned into the parent company, and in April, my last person got a fantastic job remotely for an Australian company as a junior designer. I gave my notice with my employer and that brings me to here and now. I have time to actually go to conventions again, I'll be teaching 4 classes a month in person, I'm interning a highschool student in game design from California currently, a volunteer math tutor, and I feel I can finally help everyone in boardgamedesign. I want build this community back up, the best it's ever been. When it closed due to the Reddit protest, we lost 80,000 subs. I became the mod after 2 attempts (and a long talk with Reddit admins). Honestly, this calling in life fulfills me, and if I can pass on anything to you, or help get your game noticed and sold, I'm more than happy to. Long intro short, I'm here to help, so feel free to ask me anything and if I don't know the answer (happens a lot), we can find out!
Also, thanks to our mods u/bgg-uglywalrus and u/MudkipzLover. Without them, we couldn't do this. Their experience, determination and willingness for anything boardgames is inspirational and a foundation of what we are. Thank you, muchly.
So to get started on the game, I want to focus on the first aspects of proper design:

This document will be updated constantly until we lock it and create the next stage.
-------------------------------------------------

Card Game: Deck Builder

(Boardgamedesign Edition)
1 - Main Objective (DEVELOPMENT STAGE)
2 - Card Types:
3 - Resource System:
4 - Deck Construction
5 - Card and Deck Abilities, Conditions, Effects
6 - Game Mechanisms
• Setup - (layout as we define structure)
Turn Structure and Phases
7 - Combat Logistics
8 - Win Conditions
9 - Balancing and Maths (ALPHA STAGE)
10 - Reworks based on data / feedback
You can ALWAYS change your game at any time, this is a checks and balance dedicated to it
11 - Closed Public Playtesting (BETA STAGE)
Closed as the artwork isn't finished yet, and play conditions are directly controlled
12 - Art and Theme
It's time to dedicate our resources to visual appeal and player immersion
Artwork
Player Immersion
Promotional Materials (Unique Art and tone)
Art reworks and touchups
13 - Rulebook Design and Creation
To be succinct, the rules will be compiled already, this is the design aspect
14 - Production and Distribution
Decide on platform (Digital or Physical, or Both)
Digital
Physical
15 - Creating your sell sheet
16 - Public Review Playtesting and Attention
We are able to send out prototypes before this step
17 - Community Engagement
Honestly this should be happening very early. The more people know about your game from an early stage, the more they feel connected. Ask for controlled opinions, and respond to everyone within reasonable limits. Every person and is a potential customer now and in the future, and you are building loyalty to YOU, not the game.
18 - Crowdfunding
-------------------------------------------------
Alright, this is my basic design format for board game development, with an updated minimal and modern approach. I'm going to treat it as a loose project management, with a 2 week turn around on the development stage.
Please feel free to add a comment with the section you'd like to add to. We can respond to those threads for more detail, but EACH comment will be a different design element. Your name will be added to that section and that's your contribution! More than 1 person can be credited for the section, and more than 1 section can be credited to a person, because we are all collaborating!
When it comes to the deck creations, keep the art and theme to yourself for now, but list what you want in a deck mechanic. We will come to themes when it is time.
Again, this document will be updated constantly until we lock it and create the next stage.
If we determine that this project comes to a marketable standing (which is not intended, but never say no to glory), contributors will have a few options. Either DM me your real info for credit or your username will be used. I know privacy is a premium on the internet, but I can only credit those that want it. If that means creating a new account to protect your privacy, you'll have to DM the mod team so we can approve you due to low karma automod.
Lastly, anything you contribute to this project is considered the IP of the project as a whole. Credit where credit is due (having your name on a project is a HUGE start for your resume), but please only contribute if you understand that there is no financial incentive, nor compensation of any kind outside of credit. I can't afford to feed you all :)

2024.05.16 23:07 FilmmagicianPart2 "Sea of Thieves in Space" Sounds cool

https://www.altchar.com/game-news/rumour-playstations-shooter-concord-described-as-sea-of-thieves-in-space-aW6ol2k8YFld
The game is scheduled to be released later this year, though, so Sony should start giving us more info in the coming months. Until then, we have some new details on how Concord could play. The info comes from a leaker Oliver Ollé on social media X who talked about Sony's new push towards live service games, especially after the success of Helldivers 2.
The leaker mentioned Concord, which, according to his sources, can be described as "Sea of Thieves in space with extra steps". He did not elaborate on what exactly this means but it's possible that Concord plays very similar to Sea of Thieves, allowing players to get their own ship, customise it and travel the space in search of quests, raids and loot.

2024.05.16 22:36 logophilomathemancer [TOMT][SONG] The demo song from the Aiwa Pavit mp3 player

Around ~20 years ago, there was an mp3 player known as the Aiwa PAVIT HS128. Basically, headphones that you could plug their 128MB USB drive into, with your music transferred onto it, and thus have wireless headphones long before the days of bluetooth.
The USB drive (which they called a "pavit" for some reason) came with one demo song already loaded onto it -- with no identifiable information about title, artist, or anything at all. IIRC it was just called "Demo" or something like that in the software to upload mp3 files to the "pavit". It was a catchy and upbeat instrumental song, and I'd love to find it again.
As far as I know, the Aiwa company was bought out by Sony ages ago. So far, I haven't been able to find anyone from either company who can help me find this song.
I don't even know if it's a "real" song outside of being their demo track. For all I know, they commissioned it themselves and now it's lost media.

2024.05.16 22:26 wijnandsj Compact-ish cd player?

I'm in the Netherlands. I'm looking for a somewhat compact (smaller than the standard 43cm at least) cd player. I'll be using it with headphones (almost) exclusively. I'm into classical music and use beyerdynamic headphones. Right now I've got a Sony cdp-790 which is a capable unit but mine has some issues die to old age plus it takes up a lot of space on my desk.
Is there something sub €200 that's worth looking at? Doesn't need to be ne, would be nice if it's a bit smaller

2024.05.16 21:58 BigGreenThreads60 What small flaws does Explorers of Sky have?

Explorers of Sky is a solid candidate for my favourite video game of all time, but it definitely isn’t without a few small blemishes and things that annoy me. I thought it could be fun to discuss some of the small bugbears that we have with the story, gameplay, and so forth in this otherwise excellent game. Not things which fundamentally destroy the gameplay experience for you, but things that manage to irritate you on each playthrough. The main ones which come to mind for me:
Of course, there’s a lot of other random jank you can discuss with Sky’s battle system, like how options that are relatively unexceptional in the main series (eg. Mirror Move, Smokescreen) are godlike here for no reason. Not to mention the fuckery that is the Speed system, or Silver Wind/Ominous Wind having the potential to raise stats on EVERY HIT. But I honestly don’t mind these elements; I’m used to them at this point, and breaking the game wide open with Cyndaquil or Torchic is really fun. The tradeoff is that sometimes you’ll get unavoidably wiped by Porygon-Z hitting Agility two times in a row and then pressing the funny Discharge button, but that’s just Mystery Dungeon.

2024.05.16 21:57 Historical_Olive5138 Raid bosses and PVP.

I’ve tried doing my own research on this but just come up more confused, so I’m hoping someone can explain it to me like I’m fresh out of the womb. I’m mainly a PVP player, not a great one, but I enjoy it more than other aspects of the game. I’m a rural player so more often than not if I’m raiding, it’s remotely. My issue is that 99% of the time the raid bosses don’t have the ideal stats for PVP unless you spend tons of stardust powering them up to Master League. Is raiding more for those who play a lot of PVE? Or am I supposed to ignore the IVs and play with them in PVP anyway?
For example, my Regirock has a 2167 CP and IVS are 14/10/15… that puts him ranked at 3,519 in UL but 36th in ML.
I’m still fairly new so any guidance is appreciated.

2024.05.16 21:24 Fainer Canon DC20 question and “disc error”

A neighbor asked if I could help her pull the video off her discs and put them on a flash drive.
They are the small, Sony DVD-R 1.4 GB dvds.
None would play in my cd drive.
Upon researching, I read that those discs needed to be “finalized” in the player in order to play in a standard DVD player. The neighbor does not have access to the original camera and does not know if they were finalized.
I found a cheap canon DC20 camcorder.
When I pop any of the eight dvds that I have into the camcorder and try to play them, I get a message that says “disc error”.
Any ideas here? Do the DVDs have to be finalized in the original camcorder? Do I need to try to finalize them in my DC20 in order to even view them on the LCD screen on the camera? I find it hard to believe that all eight DVDs would have problems, so it could just be this camcorder that I bought on eBay?
Thanks for any help!
