Handbuilt bicycle frames are what we love. Post your work, questions, and links to blogs, framebuilding resources, forums, and just generally cool articles. Topics can include but are not limited to handbuilt frames (of course), frame mods, custom racks, jigs, mills, lathes, tubes, files, flame, welders, and hard work. Keep it respectful.

Roof rack on glass top?
Anyone have a recommendation for a roof rack for a Gen 3 with glass top (sun roof/solar panels)? Most I looked up by Yakima and Thule say they aren’t meant for glass top roofs. Thanks!

2024.05.16 04:27 window2020 got a ticket because my bicycle rack obstructed the license plate on my car (New York)

Needless to say, I am aggravated. Went to dinner with my wife and parked legally in municipal parking lot. Free parking after 8pm so I didn’t leave the car until 8pm. After dinner there was a ticket on my car for obstructed rear license plate. The ticket was written at 8:09.
My bicycle rack is large and heavy and it would be a major pain to take it off whenever I am not carrying a bicycle. New York State does not offer the option of an auxiliary license plate and I can’t think of any reasonable workaround.
Has anybody else had this happen? What can we do about this?

$25 Scott frame for a project
I am wondering if these frames are any good, I was planning on getting it and trandfering my Deore XT group to it, and a thule rack if a normal one doesn't fit. It originally says it was a 26 inch, but was planning to try fit my 28" wheels(if not getting used Mavic 26) and magura hydraulic rim brakes. Also planning to do a fully custom paint job myself.
Planning to build this for commuting and maybe light touring and occasional offroad rides.
Never done a bike build before, so would really appreciate some help.

2024.05.15 19:26 ThePlantBarber Bicycle rack for 2007 Scion TC?

Hello everyone, I tried searching but could not find any previous posts on this topic for this model. I have a 2007 Scion TC and am moving this month. I have to drive 500 miles and need to take my road bike, as my car will be full and I will have a cargo rack/cargo bag (filled with the lightest things-plants). I heard that the owner's manual says not to attach a bike rack, but I really need to take my road bike with me. Does anyone know of a reliable bicycle rack that will work for a 2007 Scion TC? Thanks in advance for the help!

Mpg on 19’ OB
Last summer my mpg average sat around 26-27. Dropped to 24-25 in the winter and although i can still get 30 on the highway my average hasnt increased since the melt. Getting a fuel system clean and CVT serviced. Will update with hopefully better MPG afterwards. Sidenote: i have a thule box, bike rack, and still decent winter (RT) tires on Let me know if this is similar to what people are getting in theirs

Looking at the Thule Easyfold XT 2 bc it has an integrated ramp. Anyone use this with a Pace 500.3 or other step through bike? If so, would you recommend it? We will be hitching to a 2" receiver. REI is putting all Thule and Kuat racks on sale for 20% off starting 5/17, so want to get my decision narrowed down.

2024.05.15 16:47 DrDead88 2011 Kona Ute vs Taga 2.0

Trying to decide between two similarly priced cargo bikes for use while I'm relocated over the summer. I have an argo cargo kit that's working well for me at home, but it's too big and unwieldy to transport with me ~700 miles.
Use case will be short (<5 mile round trip, probably closer to 2-3) trips to the store and beach (read: flat terrain). Need to be able to transport 1 toddler, maybe (unlikely) a second. I currently have a Thule/Yepp rear rack seat that I can bring with me. Will also scratch the itch of riding my bike while away from home, some exercise.
The Kona Ute is a 2011, doesn't come with many/any accessories. Frame is a bit ugly, fenders could use replacement, and it sounds like the rear disc brake may need adjustment (hopefully not actually broken, hopefully doesn't need new cables/housing). I can do minor repairs/tuning, but nothing major where I'll be. Pros for me are the bike is solid, it'll ride like a bike, parts are easy, gearing is generous, and potential resale value if I decide not to keep it post-summer. Cons are transporting will be difficult- will have to lift onto roof rack of van. May need more work than expected. It's listed at $300, may go lower.
The taga 2.0 is the acoustic version. Apparently in great mechanical shape. Pros are portability- it can come apart for easier transport, front loaders are generally more versatile. Potentially decent resale value. Cons are: brand/solidity of the bike. I've had a 1.0 in the past, and it rode fine, but it's now a "phoenix company", and supplies/parts could be an issue. A non-zero number of people have had near-catastrophic failure (front fork braking), while others have never had an issue. Limited gearing, but I'll be riding flat terrain so it won't be a big deal. Listed at $275
Thoughts?

2024.05.15 12:34 wrenches410 Should I ditch my 20+ year old set up?

I know the real answer is “Do what you want to do!”
So, in the late 90’s my father and I turned the basement into a studio. For about 15 years used it to record demo’s for my bands and many friends bands. It turned into a great space where anyone was welcome and we just ran the board all day, recording everything.
Everyone grew old and moved on. Now, my father uses the space for his band and they do the same with recording practices. I’m regaining interest in music and have started visiting often.
The frame work of the set up is a Mackie 24x8 recording onto an Alesis HD24. I still have all 3 ADAT’s that predate it. Plenty rack effects, preamps and whatnot, as well as a very impressive collection of microphones.
One of my customers has offered payment for services (I work on high end bicycles and take side work) in the form of a new Tascam Model 24. I see they are $1200 new on Sweetwater. I played around with it and it’s cool I guess. The value of work I’ll be doing for him is $500.
I’m not doing any crazy recording, it’s just a hobby and the gear I have works. Would moving to a modern setup be a game changer or just be new shiny stuff? My financial situation is fine so the money will just get put away. I am also aware that all of my gear outside of microphones and my drums don’t hold much value. Not worried about that part at all.
Thoughts?

10 ft kayak on my cx30
Mazda OEM cross bars and rails. I’m very surprised how snug the Mazda cross bars are and how little noise they make. This is an older set of Thule j racks and I comfortably went 60 on the highway with it secured. Sharing in case others want to try, I had to buy bow and stern line straps that you just close into the hood or trunk of you car if you have no where to secure. I also then had my 2 seven ft fishing rods, paddle, net, and other equipment in the back with the seats down and I still had a lot of space. I love my cx30 😘

2024.05.15 06:30 lefibonacci Is this a stupid idea?

So, I found a used hitch-mount cargo box from a reputable source. I can get this big boi for $200. Is it a stupid idea to want to mount it (obviously I’d have to drill holes and retrofit it) to the drivers side of the roof of my Subaru Outback? That will give me room to mount my bicycle to the roof just beside it, and I think it would be a really cool, really spacious solution only taking up about half of my roof. I could also access it from the entire drivers side rather that opening from the rear like a standard roof rack, which I think would be cool. I am also a new with car camping though (far from a newb in terms of bike/backpacking however) and am not sure if this is stupid. I consider myself a very handy person so I am confident in my ability to retrofit it. My main concerns are basically creating a wall that wind could catch and push my vehicle around, and also just destroying fuel economy. As for the wind thing, some of the camper vans are as tall or much taller, so I am not sure that’s a valid concern. The fuel economy concern I could be wrong but I think will be an issue no matter what.
What do you guys think? :)
Thanks in advance!

So many types, so overwhelmed.... Any recommendations for a rack on these rails for this full suspension bike, and also be able to accommodate a basic road bike on occassion?
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.15 00:53 ThrowawayN00bqLos3r Things that Could Have Made Borderlands 3 A Good Game

  1. If they made the enemies more serious like bl1 and bl2. The enemies in bl3 are so boring and goofy it’s just boring shooting enemies over and over.
  2. Let us visit old locations. Imagine if you could have revisited sledge’s safehouse from bl1 or fyrestone and see how the places look now. That would’ve been crazy.
  3. Let the game breathe and not try and make goofy jokes every 5 seconds. We would have taken the game way more serious and not like a joke the entire time.
  4. A vehicle and gun sound option. Seriously the vehicles and guns were so busted and loud that i got an ear ache trying to find the right volume to hear the game and the dialogue at the same time.
  5. More love and soul put into the environments. Remember how cool the eridian places were in bl1 or the warriors vault in bl2? Bl3 had boring locations which were quantity over quality. Just because the areas have tons of areas doesn’t make for good replayablility. The eridian homeworld was souless as hell in bl3.
  6. Put cutscenes when we visit new planets. Us entering the atmosphere and landing would’ve made the new planets more authentic feeling coming into them.
  7. Not putting so many midgets. I swear i was killing more midgets than normal sized enemies throughout the entire game. I know randy pitchford has a midget fetish but holy hell dude give it a rest.
  8. Made typhon deleon not a short fat dumb guy. He could’ve been a strong guy with cool story missions like imagine if we had to fetch something for him in an old corpse he killed from arid badlands then the thing reawakens and we have to fight a big sand monster. That would’ve been epic. Also no dialogue was shown when tannis met deleon. I wish we got to see the look of disgust on her face.
  9. More vehicles. Seriously all they had was 1 new vehicle which was the bicycle wheel speeder and the technical and buggy were just old vehicles from bl1 and bl2. Imagine if we got a motorcycle and some monster truck. That’d be cool. Bl1’s general knoxx dlc’s vehicles were dope as hell.
10.A psycho lord. I seriously thought back when bl3 was announced and we saw the cover there’d be a psycho lord with a blue robe on. Imagine instead of the stupid calypsos we had to fight a giant roided psycho boss that had a giant arena that had buzzsaw themed stuff on it with corpses on spikes.
11.We should have had some missions with timothy for a little handsome jack throwback.
12.We should have gotten some audio logs of the atlas soldiers recalling the old vault hunters attacking them in bl1. I think that would have been cool.
13.Scagzilla, Rack Hive, or Mothrakk throwback. I honestly thought it was gonna be a mothrakk throwback but it turned out to be a phoenix boss.
14.TK baha
15.Had a mission where we faught the remaining hyperion bots. That would’ve been epic and a nice nod to bl2.
16.Had missions where we helped ellie go on a weight loss and she got skinny and moxxi being surprised. Lol
17.Made lilith less dumb and not just have her say “hey killer” everytime you meet her. Ava and baymax were the only reasonable people in all of bl3.
I’ll make a part 2 later.

2024.05.14 22:24 hazydaisy Bike rack stolen off vehicle in apartment parking lot. Anyone else have this happen?

Our $900 Thule e-bike rack was stolen off our vehicle a couple weeks ago. It was locked onto the vehicle with a pin and an expanding wedge with lock and key to the hitch. Not sure how they got it off but there was a bent optimum card and a bunch of rust left underneath it. I was just wondering if anyone else in the area has had this happen to them seeing as a ton of vehicles here keep bike racks on them? Any idea how to prevent this happening to our replacement rack? We don’t have the option of taking it off every time as we would have to lug it up 3 flights of stairs and have no storage space for it.

2024.05.14 21:22 N1K0o8 First GZCLP try, any possible improvements ?

Hi There,
At 36, after 15 years of working out "seriously" (Stronglift, Leangains, 5/3/1, ...) and binging articles and videos, I'll give GZCLP a try :)
I'm training in my garage but i still have a rack, barbells and dumbbells. I have one hour per training hence the supersets. I'm coming back from a shoulder injury, I didn't OHP since January and don't want to start to high.
Here is what I build, I'm open to critique as it is a first for me.
Day 1 :
T1 : Squat 105Kg
T2 : Bench 57.5Kg
T3 : Barbells Lunges + Reverse Crunch on superset
Day 2 :
T1 : Bench 105Kg
T2 : Deadlift 62.5Kg
T3 : Incline DB Bench + Chest Flyes (on superset if possible)
Day 3 :
T1 : Deadlift 115Kg
T2 : OHP 27.5Kg (seems... low!)
T3 : DB Row + Weighted crunch on superset
Day 4 :
T1 : OHP 50Kg
T2 : Squat 57.5Kg
T3 : Lateral raises + Bicycle Crunch on superset
Is it a good start ?

Thoughts on this type of rack
All the fake rain gutter mounted options were very expensive. Yakima and Thule are hard to find and way too much. This van rain gutter rack looked to have the same mount and had good reviews. May look a little strange as to height on the taller shell.

2024.05.14 19:36 IAMKAH I just road my Cannondale Trial 6 from Santa Monica to Oceanside!!

That’s 60ish miles a day for 4 days counting sight seeing. Best part of the trip was the unknown! Worst part was when my rear wheel rack broke with a way to heavy bag to carry. Although I think it was meant to be cuz it happened just as I was entering Dana point, before that was a loooong stretch of nothing. There were four bike shops in like a mile of this little town. First two had nothing that would fit, it’s a bigger than normal bike. Im now standing in this strange town, trying to navigate this super heavy bag leaning on my seat as I hug it with one hand and steering the bike with the other barely able to walk cuz the bag keeps trying to fall off.. I decided to call the third shop to ask about their racks. Knowing I might have to scrap the trip and rent a SUV or pickup truck and drive my bike home. Third shop said they only had e-bike racks. Iv been wanting one of those but could never find one that fits. Well the guy explained their rack probably wouldn’t fit cuz they custom orders their bike frames at a different size than most. And of course they need to them have a rack custom made to fit. And the guy insisted it would not fit. Well I had a feeling, or maybe I heard something in his voice..I decided I was going to pass by and take a look. Well it just so happened that the size they order is a perfect fit for my bike! But, he looks and didn’t have any more in the back. It took some convincing and an extra 20 buck fee but I got him to remove a rack from one of his for sale bikes and I was finally on my way!! I was so happy, I got a much stronger rack and avoided something like a thousand bucks to rent a car with a one way drop off. Now well on my way and riding with much more confidence, the old rack would flex and rub my tire when I hit bumps..I was on a beach trail passing through San Clemente, quite a ways from the road, the path was blocked and close from a land slide. So I decided to walk this little dirt path near the Amtrak which quickly turned into solid rocks and water ruts and started getting smaller and close to the tracks. As I’m pushing through, dodging the occasional train and fighting the weight of my rig as it’s bumping and jumping all over the place from the uneven rocky slope bordering the tracks, I can’t help but realize how fortunate I was they all this happened the way it did and my rack broke exactly when it did. Otherwise I t most certainly would have broken on the rocks. And I would have been in a much worse situation! In conclusion after riding the I-5 fwy for about 7 miles cuz the military base wouldn’t let me pass their sacred lands…I made it to Oceanside!!! Final thoughts, I was surprised at how many people were screaming at me and talking smack and saying things like no bikes here! And get off the road! and even getting way to close to me. I’m not the guy that rides in the lane, if there’s no bike lane I’m either on the sidewalk or clearly in the parking lane trying not to “get doored”. I never imagined the costal roads were so bicycle intolerant. Iv always thought the coast areas were all about touring and bike riding. I had bought a mirror for the first time ever and I’m happy I did. It seemed that when people would see me looking at them in my mirror they would be more cordial and give me space. I guess bullies don’t like to be seen and only act from the shadows. That being said it was an amazing trip! I’m so proud of my body for not giving up and so fortunate to have just right amount of luck at just the right time! Next I’ll be riding to my favorite place in the world and where I hope to retire and die, Solvang Ca.
I don’t use social media and am to awkward to really have friends..I thought someone other than my mom should know my tale.
Ride on!!!!

2024.05.14 16:43 binicorn Advice Needed: Mounting a Gladiator Cabinet on an RV's Thule Bike Rack for Outdoor Storage

Advice Needed: Mounting a Gladiator Cabinet on an RV's Thule Bike Rack for Outdoor Storage
Hello fellow RV DIYers!
I'm exploring a DIY project to mount a Gladiator GAWG28FDYG full-door wall gearbox onto a Thule Elite Van XT bike rack on my RV. The intent is to create an outdoor storage solution for small, lightweight items like muddy shoes. The Gladiator cabinets are designed for indoor use, but I'm considering this as a more cost-effective alternative to custom RV cabinets, which can be quite expensive.
Here's what I'm planning to do: - Reinforce the cabinet structure for stability during travel. - using mounting bolts, nuts and washers to securely attach it to the bike rack. I'll need to drill holes in both cabinet and rack - I plan on using a piece of plywood sheet for it to rest on. - Add vibration dampening and waterproofing measures to protect against the elements.
I'm looking for advice from anyone who has done something similar or has insights on: 1. Best practices for reinforcing and mounting cabinets designed for indoor use onto an RV 2. Recommendations for materials or techniques for effective waterproofing and vibration reduction. 3. Any general tips or cautionary advice from your own experiences with similar modifications.
Any input would be greatly appreciated as I try to make sure this setup is safe, durable, and functional.
Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions!

2024.05.14 16:26 Savann_aaahhh Haven’t ridden a bike in 10yrs… thinking of buying one and riding it around my city! Any advice?

I’m mainly looking for a bike to get around downtown or use in combination with the bus to get to and from campus. My partner and I share one car and I’m happy to use public transit and a bike to get around one or two days a week.
Most of the time I would be riding short distances downtown to events instead of looking for parking or paying expensive parking fees. It would also get put onto the bike rack on busses and be ridden around my college campus. I was looking into e-bikes for a while but it seems most are out of my current budget and I’d rather not settle for a piece of junk.
Any advice to get used to riding a bike again? I don’t plan on immediately jumping into riding it on the streets. My dad lives in a small town and I was thinking of visiting him and practicing on the streets there. Are there any accessories that are good to have on a bike to get around town?
I’ve been eyeballing an Electra Loft 7i as their step over Loft bikes seem to be too large for my short self. Does anyone have experience with that brand?
Thanks for reading my many questions! I’m excited to get back into riding a bicycle, but also nervous. I want to make sure I’m prepared and safe. :)
