2024.05.15 07:58 PrismPonderer How to Watch Formula 1 in Italy

Want to know how to watch Formula 1 in Italy? Here's the answer to this question.

Quick Steps: watch Formula 1 in Italy

  1. Subscribe to ExpressVPN
  2. Download the VPN app on your device
  3. Connect to a server in Austria.
  4. Access your ServusTV account.
  5. Watch Formula 1 2024 season for free!

Why do you need a VPN to watch Formula 1 in Italy?

Accessing Formula 1 in Italy can be tricky due to licensing restrictions that limit its availability outside the Austria. When you try to stream sports like Formula 1 from Italy, F1’s system detects your IP address and blocks access. However, there’s a workaround: using a VPN. By connecting to a VPN server in the Austria, you can change your IP address and fool Servus TV into thinking you’re accessing the service from within the Austria. This allows you to watch Formula 1 Season 2024 in Italy on Servus TV without restrictions. Using a VPN helps you bypass geographic limitations and adds a layer of security to your online activities by encrypting your data and preventing third parties from accessing it. Additionally, it can prevent your internet service provider (ISP) from throttling your connection, ensuring a smooth streaming experience. For the best streaming experience, consider opting for a premium VPN service while in Austria to ensure reliable and uninterrupted access to Servus TV and other geo-blocked content.

2024.05.15 03:16 AlphabeticalMedical Extremely Frustrated with Subaru customer Advocacy

Back in April 2023 I had a major engine rebuild performed on my 2013 Outback at my local Subaru dealership running me $6k. They were confident this repair would set me up for another ~100k miles. 1 year and 15k miles later, several warning lights suddenly turn on, I notice some excessive exhaust and sludge under the radiator cap. I take the car into the same dealership and learn I am *2 weeks* over the warranty period. They take my car for diagnosis and call me back that evening... $2.5k to take the engine back out and perform another major repair.
I get in touch with Customer Advocacy and speak with a service specialist. I explain that I am looking at 2 major engine repairs (and $8,500!) within 1 calendar year, I am 2 weeks over the warranty, and ask if there's anything he can do to help me out. He says he will be back in touch with me within a few days. I haven't heard from him since (this was 2 weeks ago). The dealership emails me a few days ago and says that SoA will not be covering any repairs (still haven't heard from the service specialist assigned to my case). I called SoA and they say they can take a look again but most likely the decision will remain final.
My car isn't in bad condition. No performance issues noticed and I make sure to get my oil changed and take good care of it. I'm shocked at how Subaru is refusing to stand by their work and not help me get this taken care of. It feels like they are trying to strongarm me into forking over another $2.5k to fix the engine they just rebuilt last year!
Does anyone have any similar experiences? What would you do if you were me?

2024.05.14 22:52 charliebrown22 Did I mess up my 2023 Backdoor Roth Contribution?

Beginning April 2024 - I opened a new Traditional IRA account at Fidelity. For calendar year 2023, I transferred $6,500 from an external account to the new T-IRA account. My goal was to transfer (all) the funds ASAP once cleared to my existing Fidelity Roth IRA account, to avoid any sort of pro-rata calculations.
Mid April 2024 - I filed my taxes and made sure that my taxable income was not reduced by the $6,500. About a week and a half after my initial deposit, the funds finally cleared and I was able to transfer all $6,500 to my existing Roth IRA. I was asked if I wanted to close the T-IRA account, but I selected NO. I wanted to keep this T-IRA as a $0 balance pass-through account for future years.
End of April 2024 - the T-IRA account received a dividend of $7.94 (SPAXX). I guess because of the time it took for the funds to clear.
Now - I have $7.94 in the pass-through T-IRA account and am not sure what to do with it. I'd prefer to keep this account at $0 for future use. Is there anything I should or need to do?

2024.05.14 21:46 djjohngold 12 Offers To Sell More Music Merch To Your Fans

Hey everyone, it's John from Hypeddit! I run one of the largest music promotion platforms in the world, and I've helped tens of thousands of music artists reach millions of listeners, fans, and streams. Today, I want to share how you can make more money from Merch Sales every month of the year!
Why Merch Sales Matter:
Streaming royalties are great, but they only bring in fractions of pennies per stream. On the other hand, merch sales can bring in $10, $15, or $20 from a single purchase, which can significantly fund your music promotion efforts.
Recent Video Breakdown:
I recently posted a video where I break down my entire merch sales strategy, including how much money I'm making and how I'm making it. If this interests you, feel free to check it out. In this post, I want to give you a merch sales calendar to help you make more money from merch sales every month.
Using MailChimp for Easy Offers:
One simple way to boost your merch sales is through email offers. For example, during Black Friday, I offer a 50% discount on all t-shirts for house music fans. The key elements of a successful email offer include:
✅A clear, descriptive subject line (e.g., "50% off on all house music t-shirts").
✅A substantial discount (50% off is more enticing than 5% or 20%).
✅A reason for the discount (e.g., in honor of Black Friday).
✅Creating a Merch Sales Calendar
Here's a calendar to help you plan your sales throughout the year:
✅January: New Year Sale
✅February: Valentine's Day Sale
✅March: St. Patrick's Day Sale
✅April: Easter Sale
✅May: Memorial Day Sale / Mother's Day Sale / Spring Sale
✅June: Summer Kickoff Sale
✅July: Independence Day Sale (Fourth of July)
✅August: Summer Sale / Back to School Sale
✅September: Labor Day Sale
✅October: Halloween Sale
✅November: Black Friday / Cyber Monday Sale
✅December: Holiday Sale / Christmas Sale
Bonus Tip: Birthday Month Sale:
Offer a sale during your birthday month. Fans will feel a personal connection and are more likely to take advantage of the discount. Many will even reply to wish you a happy birthday, increasing engagement.
Make sure your merchandise is priced so that even at discounted rates, you are still profitable. I use Printful for print-on-demand services, which means no inventory hassle. Price your items to cover costs and ensure a profit margin.
Frequent sales can train fans to wait for the next discount, so price your merchandise to ensure profitability year-round. If you want to learn more, check out my mini training on merch sales and watch my latest video for detailed insights.

Dachau 1945: The Souls of All Are Aflame
by Douglas Cramer

The Dachau concentration camp was opened in 1933 in a former gunpowder factory. The first prisoners interred there were political opponents of Adolf Hitler, who had become German chancellor that same year. During the twelve years of the camp's existence, over 200,000 prisoners were brought there. The majority of prisoners at Dachau were Christians, including Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox clergy and lay people.
Countless prisoners died at Dachau, and hundreds were forced to participate in the cruel medical experiments conducted by Dr. Sigmund Rascher. When prisoners arrived at the camp they were beaten, insulted, shorn of their hair, and had all their belongings taken from them. The SS guards could kill whenever they thought it was appropriate. Punishments included being hung on hooks for hours, high enough that heels did not touch the ground; being stretched on trestles; being whipped with soaked leather whips; and being placed in solitary confinement for days on end in rooms too small to lie down in.
The abuse of the prisoners reached its end in the spring of 1945. The events of that Holy Week were later recorded by one of the prisoners, Gleb Rahr. Rahr grew up in Latvia and fled with his family to Nazi Germany when the Russians invaded. He was arrested by the Gestapo because of his membership in an organization that opposed both fascism and communism. Originally imprisoned in Buchenwald, he was transported to Dachau near the end of the war.
In fact, Rahr was one of the survivors of the infamous “death trains,” as they were called by the American G.I.’s who discovered them. Thousands of prisoners from different camps had been sent to Dachau in open rail cars. The vast majority of them died horrific deaths from starvation, dehydration, exposure, sickness, and execution.
In a letter to his parents the day after the liberation, G.I. William Cowling wrote, “As we crossed the track and looked back into the cars the most horrible sight I have ever seen met my eyes. The cars were loaded with dead bodies. Most of them were naked and all of them skin and bones. Honest their legs and arms were only a couple of inches around and they had no buttocks at all. Many of the bodies had bullet holes in the back of their heads.”
Marcus Smith, one of the US Army personnel assigned to Dachau, also described the scene in his 1972 book, The Harrowing of Hell.
Refuse and excrement are spread over the cars and grounds. More of the dead lie near piles of clothing, shoes, and trash. Apparently some had crawled or fallen out of the cars when the doors were opened, and died on the grounds. One of our men counts the boxcars and says that there are thirty-nine. Later I hear that there were fifty, that the train had arrived at the camp during the evening of April 27, by which time all of the passengers were supposed to be dead so that the bodies could be disposed of in the camp crematorium. But this could not be done because there was no more coal to stoke the furnaces. Mutilated bodies of German soldiers are also on the ground, and occasionally we see an inmate scream at the body of his former tormentor and kick it. Retribution!
Gates of Dachau Concentration Camp
Rahr was one of the over 4,000 Russian prisoners at Dachau at the time of the liberation. The liberated prisoners also included over 1,200 Christian clergymen. After the war, Rahr immigrated to the United States, where he taught Russian History at the University of Maryland. He later worked for Radio Free Europe. His account of the events at Dachau in 1945 begins with his arrival at the camp:
April 27th: The last transport of prisoners arrives from Buchenwald. Of the 5,000 originally destined for Dachau, I was among the 1,300 who had survived the trip. Many were shot, some starved to death, while others died of typhus. . . .
April 28th: I and my fellow prisoners can hear the bombardment of Munich taking place some 30 km from our concentration camp. As the sound of artillery approaches ever nearer from the west and the north, orders are given proscribing prisoners from leaving their barracks under any circumstances. SS-soldiers patrol the camp on motorcycles as machine guns are directed at us from the watch-towers, which surround the camp.
April 29th: The booming sound of artillery has been joined by the staccato bursts of machine gun fire. Shells whistle over the camp from all directions. Suddenly white flags appear on the towers—a sign of hope that the SS would surrender rather than shoot all prisoners and fight to the last man. Then, at about 6:00 p.m., a strange sound can be detected emanating from somewhere near the camp gate which swiftly increases in volume. . . .
The sound came from the dawning recognition of freedom. Lt. Col. Walter Fellenz of the US Seventh Army described the greeting from his point of view:
Several hundred yards inside the main gate, we encountered the concentration enclosure, itself. There before us, behind an electrically charged, barbed wire fence, stood a mass of cheering, half-mad men, women and children, waving and shouting with happiness—their liberators had come! The noise was beyond comprehension! Every individual (over 32,000) who could utter a sound, was cheering. Our hearts wept as we saw the tears of happiness fall from their cheeks.
Rahr’s account continues:
Finally all 32,600 prisoners join in the cry as the first American soldiers appear just behind the wire fence of the camp. After a short while electric power is turned off, the gates open and the American G.I.’s make their entrance. As they stare wide-eyed at our lot, half-starved as we are and suffering from typhus and dysentery, they appear more like fifteen-year-old boys than battle-weary soldiers. . . .
An international committee of prisoners is formed to take over the administration of the camp. Food from SS stores is put at the disposal of the camp kitchen. A US military unit also contributes some provision, thereby providing me with my first opportunity to taste American corn. By order of an American officer radio-receivers are confiscated from prominent Nazis in the town of Dachau and distributed to the various national groups of prisoners. The news comes in: Hitler has committed suicide, the Russians have taken Berlin, and German troops have surrendered in the South and in the North. But the fighting still rages in Austria and Czechoslovakia. . . .
Naturally, I was ever cognizant of the fact that these momentous events were unfolding during Holy Week. But how could we mark it, other than through our silent, individual prayers? A fellow-prisoner and chief interpreter of the International Prisoner's Committee, Boris F., paid a visit to my typhus-infested barrack—“Block 27”—to inform me that efforts were underway in conjunction with the Yugoslav and Greek National Prisoner's Committees to arrange an Orthodox service for Easter day, May 6th.
There were Orthodox priests, deacons, and a group of monks from Mount Athos among the prisoners. But there were no vestments, no books whatsoever, no icons, no candles, no prosphoras, no wine. . . . Efforts to acquire all these items from the Russian church in Munich failed, as the Americans just could not locate anyone from that parish in the devastated city. Nevertheless, some of the problems could be solved. The approximately four hundred Catholic priests detained in Dachau had been allowed to remain together in one barrack and recite mass every morning before going to work. They offered us Orthodox the use of their prayer room in “Block 26,” which was just across the road from my own “block.”
The chapel was bare, save for a wooden table and a Czenstochowa icon of the Theotokos hanging on the wall above the table—an icon which had originated in Constantinople and was later brought to Belz in Galicia, where it was subsequently taken from the Orthodox by a Polish king. When the Russian Army drove Napoleon's troops from Czenstochowa, however, the abbot of the Czenstochowa Monastery gave a copy of the icon to czar Alexander I, who placed it in the Kazan Cathedral in Saint-Petersburg where it was venerated until the Bolshevik seizure of power. A creative solution to the problem of the vestments was also found. New linen towels were taken from the hospital of our former SS-guards. When sewn together lengthwise, two towels formed an epitrachilion and when sewn together at the ends they became an orarion. Red crosses, originally intended to be worn by the medical personnel of the SS guards, were put on the towel-vestments.
On Easter Sunday, May 6th (April 23rd according to the Church calendar)—which ominously fell that year on Saint George the Victory-Bearer's Day—Serbs, Greeks and Russians gathered at the Catholic priests’ barracks. Although Russians comprised about 40 percent of the Dachau inmates, only a few managed to attend the service. By that time “repatriation officers” of the special Smersh units had arrived in Dachau by American military planes, and begun the process of erecting new lines of barbed wire for the purpose of isolating Soviet citizens from the rest of the prisoners, which was the first step in preparing them for their eventual forced repatriation.
In the entire history of the Orthodox Church there has probably never been an Easter service like the one at Dachau in 1945. Greek and Serbian priests together with a Serbian deacon wore the make-shift “vestments” over their blue and gray-striped prisoner’s uniforms. Then they began to chant, changing from Greek to Slavonic, and then back again to Greek. The Easter Canon, the Easter Sticheras—everything was recited from memory. The Gospel—“In the beginning was the Word”—also from memory.
And finally, the Homily of Saint John Chrysostom—also from memory. A young Greek monk from the Holy Mountain stood up in front of us and recited it with such infectious enthusiasm that we shall never forget him as long as we live. Saint John Chrysostomos himself seemed to speak through him to us and to the rest of the world as well! Eighteen Orthodox priests and one deacon—most of whom were Serbs—participated in this unforgettable service. Like the sick man who had been lowered through the roof of a house and placed in front of the feet of Christ the Savior, the Greek Archimandrite Meletios was carried on a stretcher into the chapel, where he remained prostrate for the duration of the service.
Other prisoners at Dachau included the recently canonized Bishop Nikolai Velimirovich, who later became the first administrator of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the US and Canada; and the Very Reverend Archimandrite Dionysios, who after the war was made Metropolitan of Trikkis and Stagnon in Greece.
Fr. Dionysios had been arrested in 1942 for giving asylum to an English officer fleeing the Nazis. He was tortured for not revealing the names of others involved in aiding Allied soldiers and was then imprisoned for eighteen months in Thessalonica before being transferred to Dachau. During his two years at Dachau, he witnessed Nazi atrocities and suffered greatly himself. He recorded many harrowing experiences in his book Ieroi Palmoi. Among these were regular marches to the firing squad, where he would be spared at the last moment, ridiculed, and then returned to the destitution of the prisoners’ block.
After the liberation, Fr. Dionysios helped the Allies to relocate former Dachau inmates and to bring some normalcy to their disrupted lives. Before his death, Metropolitan Dionysios returned to Dachau from Greece and celebrated the first peacetime Orthodox Liturgy there. Writing in 1949, Fr. Dionysios remembered Pascha 1945 in these words:
In the open air, behind the shanty, the Orthodox gather together, Greeks and Serbs. In the center, both priests, the Serb and the Greek. They aren't wearing golden vestments. They don't even have cassocks. No tapers, no service books in their hands. But now they don't need external, material lights to hymn the joy. The souls of all are aflame, swimming in light.
Blessed is our God. My little paper-bound New Testament has come into its glory. We chant “Christ is Risen” many times, and its echo reverberates everywhere and sanctifies this place.
Hitler's Germany, the tragic symbol of the world without Christ, no longer exists. And the hymn of the life of faith was going up from all the souls; the life that proceeds buoyantly toward the Crucified One of the verdant hill of Stein.
On April 29, 1995—the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Dachau—the Russian Orthodox Memorial Chapel of Dachau was consecrated. Dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ, the chapel holds an icon depicting angels opening the gates of the concentration camp and Christ Himself leading the prisoners to freedom. The simple wooden block conical architecture of the chapel is representative of the traditional funeral chapels of the Russian North. The sections of the chapel were constructed by experienced craftsmen in the Vladimir region of Russia, and assembled in Dachau by veterans of the Western Group of Russian Forces just before their departure from Germany in 1994. The priests who participated in the 1945 Paschal Liturgy are commemorated at every service held in the chapel, along with all Orthodox Christians who lost their lives “at this place, or at another place of torture.”

2024.05.14 19:01 FrankTLizard SUCCESSFUL USA TO UK FIANCE VISA! A timeline, a thank you, and a couple questions.

Hi everyone! I'll get down to business first and show my timeline.
Biometrics on March 19th for a standard, non-priority VISA with the USCIS center.
ECO email preparing for review on April 29th (a boilerplate email)
Final email saying they're dispatching my passport on May 13th, received passport at my front door with vignette inside on May 14th. From start to finish it took me 57 calendar days or 40 business days to receive my decision.
I'd like to thank everyone on this board for their help, especially u/puul who has always given me guidance and assistance whenever possible.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
I have two questions now, since they don't really give you any follow-up on what to do once you have the visa!
One: My entry sticker is valid for six months unto November, is the sticker my Fiance visa, or just a sticker saying I can enter to collect my fiance visa? I heard the sticker was usually only good for 90 days.
Two: I'm obviously aiming to settle permanently, so what documents should I bring from the states to prepare me for this transition between countries?
Thank you all once again.

2024.05.14 16:13 Dazzling-Adagio-2162 Sweden Schengen Visa Timeline

I'm seeking some advice on my current situation with my Sweden Schengen visa application. I applied for the visa and submitted my passport on the 29th of April through VFS London. Since then, I've received three different reference numbers, each on alternate days.
I contacted them via email regarding this issue on the 7th of May but haven't received a response. Every time I call, they inform me that the issue has been escalated, but I never hear back from them.
It's been 15 calendar days since I submitted my passport, and I'm growing increasingly concerned about the status of my passport. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue or can offer any advice on what to do next?

2024.05.14 13:50 upbstock Morning Prepper 🆕🆕🆕🆕🆕🆕🆕🆕🆕

State of the consumer Are U.S. consumers finally tightening the purse strings? That's the main question on the minds of investors as major retailers kick off their quarterly earnings reports this week, starting with Home Depot (HD). The home improvement chain's Q1 results came in below Street expectations, hurt by a delayed start to spring, continued softness in certain larger discretionary projects, and higher mortgage rates.
Dig deeper: Retailer earnings come at a time when consumer sentiment is weakening, amid expectations of stickier inflation for some time to come and a tempered outlook for income growth. Investing Group Leader Bret Jensen believes stagflation is an increasingly likely economic scenario. "Right now, I believe the average American consumer has a better handle on the U.S. economy than the average investor and a better take on the true level of inflation than governmental statistics."
Scott Feiler, consumer sector specialist at Goldman Sachs, said the consumer spending concerns have been driven by updates by bellwethers in the sector, and the notable slowdown seen in April - one of the worst months of the retail quarter. Companies like Wayfair (W) and Whirlpool (WHR) have already warned that consumers are cutting back spending on big-ticket items, while fast-food chains such as McDonald's (MCD) and Starbucks (SBUX) have observed pickier and more value-minded customers. "Consumer cracks are emerging," especially among lower incomes, warned Bank of America analyst Savita Subramanian.
Earnings watch: Walmart (WMT), which will report Q1 results on Thursday, is expected to report modest upside to the consensus U.S. comparable sales estimates, driven by bargain-hunting shoppers. Also keep an eye on other retailers scheduled to report results next week: Lowe's (LOW), Target (TGT), TJX (TJX), and Ross Stores (ROST).
Sustained weight loss Patients who are taking Novo Nordisk's (NVO) blockbuster obesity drug Wegovy have reportedly maintained an average of 10% weight loss four years after starting the treatment. "We see that once the majority of the weight loss is accrued, you don't go back and start to increase weight if you stay on the drug," said Martin Holst Lange, Novo's head of development. The data could help Novo in its efforts to convince insurers and governments to provide coverage for the treatment. The U.K.'s National Health Service provides only two years of Wegovy coverage, while Medicare does not cover the drug. A recent poll showed that many people believe Medicare should cover weight loss drugs. (2 comments)
Resisting takeover Anglo American (OTCQX:AAUKF) has unveiled a major shakeup of the company - which includes divesting its steelmaking coal and nickel businesses - as the British miner aims to stave off BHP's (BHP) takeover bid. Anglo American will demerge Anglo American Platinum (OTCPK:ANGPY), while its diamond business De Beers will either be divested or demerged "to improve strategic flexibility." The overhaul is aimed at sharpening Anglo American's focus on its mainstay assets - copper and premium iron ore. "These actions represent the most radical changes to Anglo American in decades," its CEO Duncan Wanblad said. The plan was announced just a day after the firm rejected BHP's (BHP) new £34B proposal.
Power grid boost The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved two new rules Monday that are expected to make it easier to expand the construction of big power lines and bring more renewable energy to U.S. homes and businesses. One rule will require companies that produce and transmit electricity to weigh factors such as supply and demand over at least 20 years; the other addresses the permitting of critical projects in areas that lack adequate transmission capacity. The rule requiring long-term planning is "the biggest single action by the federal government to advance transmission," according to Rob Gramlich, president of power consulting firm Grid Strategies. [New Update]: My family forgot to invite me to my grandparents funeral, but they are convinced I was there.
Trigger Warnings: death of loved ones, emotional manipulation, gaslighting, harassment
RECAP
Original Post: November 14, 2023**
I’m 30s F and caused a major blowup in my family and now none of them are talking to me. For background, my hometown is tiny (500pop) and when I went 2 hrs away to “the city” (15,000pop) for college, I loved it. I ended up staying after graduation, got married, and am happy here for a decade. I visit my home town every few weeks or so, call/text my family near daily, and thought we were all good. My family’s pretty small. Just my brother, mom, step dad, dad, step mom, and an aunt and uncle (mom’s siblings, never married, no kids). My mother's grandparents moved to my home town when I was in high school and were just down the street from us. My family has always been pretty drama free (aside from my parent’s divorce when I was a kid) and we’ve been happy. The step-parents were blended in perfectly and we share holidays and celebrations together. We’re all super close and just the perfect little group.
Ever since I moved away, the topic of “when am I moving back?” is constant, and I’ve always laughed it off. My home town has nothing. You have to drive 30 minutes for milk and bread. 60-90 minute one-way commutes to work. And floods shut down the main road every Easter. I love the town, but I love here more. I have parks, stores, community events, a library! The “city” is great. My family grumbles that I need to move back, but I refuse. I've been trying to encourage them to come here, especially since it's not an hour drive to the nearest medical facility.
Now to the meat and potatoes: both my grandparents passed over COVID times. They were both old and their health had been failing for a while so it was only a matter of time. Thankfully they didn’t catch it, but it made visiting them impossible and we survived mostly through FaceTime. They both passed in their sleep months apart. Both were cremated and kept securely under the kitchen sink for safe keeping while the pandemic blew over. That was 2021.
Well, I just found out my family held a funeral for them and scattered the ashes in my uncle’s maple grove over the summer. No one said a word to me about it. I’ve visited numerous times before and after and not one word. I only found out because my great uncle from California posted on Facebook a few weeks ago that he is entering hospice and was so thankful his health stayed strong enough for him to see his little sister (my grandma) to her final resting place. I was confused and called my mom. She was all “Yeah, the funeral we had in July, remember?” Ya’ll, I visited them for the 4th of July. They did the funeral the 8th. Not a word about it to me. They had planned this for months. Long enough to arrange for my infirm great uncle to be brought over from the other side of the country. Apparently, they talked about it “all the time”.
Everyone is convinced I was at the funeral. They SWEAR I was there. I can prove I wasn’t because Google’s got my location history. My hubby is baffled because he was supposedly there, too, but he had to work every weekend in June and July. Time clock doesn’t lie. My family straight up forgot about me. I’m hurt. I’m sad. And they’re pissed at me “for lying”. They think I’m causing drama over nothing. Nothing I say can convince them I wasn’t there. My family is united in this. And they’ve all put me “on read” until I admit I’m wrong. They think I’ve gone nuts. Either there’s a doppelganger of me attending events, or my family doesn’t want to admit they screwed up. I’m not backing down.
Thanksgiving is coming up, and my family’s been vague posting on Facebook about “forgetful kids” and mental health. It’s so freaking weird and I don’t know if I’m in bizzaro world or what’s going on. My mom’s best friend reached out and said I should just admit I was wrong and apologize, that I’m causing my mom so much unnecessary stress. I asked her if she’s checked everyone’s home for CO2. She hung up on me. (We checked our CO2, and our testers are running just fine.) I have reached out to a few people in my home town to check in on my folks, and they all say they're fine. I even spoke with the local volunteer fire fighter group to see if they could check for gas leaks. Not sure if they were able to.
I don’t know what to do. I’ve shown them the proof I wasn’t there, but they know I’m tech savvy and just assume I’ve Photoshopped it. Hubby says we need a break, and we’re going to be staying home this holiday season.
Edit: I don't know the update rules, so I'll post updates to my profile should anyone want them.
Update #1: November 27, 2023
Not sure how to do updates on posts, so figured I'd post anything on my profile. Folks have private messaged me and this will be easier I think?
It's 11/27 and Thanksgiving just happened. Hubby and I stayed home. We got a small turkey and made our own little thanksgiving. It was nice. We ate around noon, then watched a movie, and later sat outside with a bottle of wine to watch the sun set behind the trees and neighbor houses.
We usually take the day before off, drive to my folks, stay the night, and help with the Thanksgiving Day cooking. So it wasn't until Wednesday night that my mom broke the silence. Mom called and asked when I was showing up, and I told her we were staying home this year, but for them to have a happy Thanksgiving, and to give the rest of the family my love. She was quiet for a long time after I said that, and I think she eventually mumbled an "okay", or something, and hung up. It wasn't an angry hang up. Just a hang up. On Thanksgiving day, I sent a group "Happy Thanksgiving!" gif to our family group chat. I received a few "happy Thanksgiving"'s back. No one's said anything else. There's been no posts on Facebook.
Update #2: December 12, 2023
So, I think I mentioned in one of my comments that my dad and I usually talk on the phone every Sunday morning. We're both early risers so we'd chat over our morning coffees and watch the sunrise. Him and I haven't really spoken since this all went down and it's been tough. I'm used to talking to him, you know?
Well, I was sitting outside in my usual spot, watching the sun rise and freezing my butt off, and he called me. I'm not entirely sure how to describe the emotions I felt. It was a mix of panic, hope, terror, happiness, and dread. I ended up answering because I just had to know what he wanted. It was an awkward conversation. He didn't address the current "drama", but instead tiptoed around the situation with all the grace of an cow on stilts. For instance, a simple "How are you doing?" Type question was answered with a "Not good." And the whole conversation would stall out for a bit because he knew why I wasn't doing well. So we ended up talking about the weather, the various winter birds we'd seen in our feeders, and the Christmas decorations around town. Things like that.
Eventually he asked if we were coming out for Christmas, and sounded sad when I told him we weren't. He asked if him and step mom could come visit us instead, and I told him it wasn't a good idea this year. That hubby and I were going to spend a quiet holiday together. I let him know he should be receiving some gifts at his PO Box any day now, so to please pick them up from the post office and put them under the family tree for everyone. He said he'd ship ours to us as well.
And that was pretty much it. No crazy drama to report. The only posts on Facebook have been the usual Christmas excitement ones, countdowns, photos of Santa, silly gift ideas, photos of company Christmas parties.
On a personal note: Hubby and I are doing alright. Our health is good, our spirits high, and we're as solid as ever. We each got Christmas bonus' at our jobs, so we're excited about that. They're not large, but we're happy to have them. We have also done advent calendars for the first time ever. I got him a Lego one, and he got me a hot chocolate one. We're going to do the calendars again next year. Maybe make a tradition out of it.
Everyone please have a safe and happy holidays.
Inheritance: December 16, 2023
I've received a lot - A LOT - of messages and private DMs urging me to check into inheritance and such. I'm really touched a lot of Internet strangers are worried about me and I wanted to ensure everyone that inheritance is most likely not an issue here. I'd almost be relieved if it was, because then it would at least make some sense. Money does weird things to people, you know?
No one in my family is wealthy by any means. After my grandparents' passed, their small estate was used to pay for their end of life expenses and remaining assets split up. Everyone directly related got an equal split (so excluded my dad and the step parents). I don't remember the exact amount I received, but it was around $5k if I recall. My brother gave me his share, too, so I could finish paying off my college debt while the interest freeze was active.
The great uncle from California has kids and grand kids, and great grandkids of his own, and also isn't wealthy. I think one of his kids makes good money doing something in finance, but I'm not entirely sure. I can't imagine he left us anything, as we hardly knew him. My mom, aunt, and uncle only met him a few times in their lives, and my brother and I even less. Grandma and him were close, but I don't think he liked my grandpa much.
Christmas: December 25, 2023
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. I've received a lot of support through my posts and I'm really grateful. Writing these updates have had a therapeutic effect.
Yesterday was Sunday, but I didn't answer my dad when he called. I just really didn't feel up to a pointless chat, so let it go to voicemail. He tried to reach me a few times throughout the day, but I didn't answer.
Our bestie last minute invited us over to his house for Christmas day lunch (today), so husband and I were busy all Christmas Eve making cookies, peanut brittle, and homemade suckers/hard candies for his kids. Mom tried to reach out as well, but I also ignored her calls.
We had a BLAST at lunch! Our friend's kids are a lot of fun to be around. They got some techy presents from their grandparents (Quest vr headset and steam decks, lucky little rascals) Friend and his wife aren't good with tech, while hubby and I are, so we helped get them set up while our friend played a good host to his folks and inlaws. The grandparents didn't realize that a Steam deck required a Steam account, so we got the kids all their own accounts set up, added them to our steam friends lists, and gifted them some games. We also bought them a few VR games for their headset, and they were off to the races with Beat Saber in no time.
As for my folks: My brother texted and asked if we could talk sometime tomorrow. I think me ignoring mom and dad has caused some kind of upset. Which they deserve.
Brother’s call: December 26, 2023
Spoke with my brother over the phone this morning.
For starters, he apologized for everything. Him and I are good (for now). For a bit of background, my brother and I are only 2 years apart. There weren't a lot of kids around growing up, so the two of us were often stuck doing stuff together. So we have a lot of shared interests and passions. He's been pretty silent on this whole matter, but still "part of the group", if you know what I mean. I think the thought of losing him out of my life was probably the most painful, because he's always been there. He was my rock until I met my husband. He's definitely a Mama's boy, though, so anything mom wanted, he made sure she got. I'm happy to have him back.
Without further ado, here's the story from the horse's mouth:
Mom apparently had a cancer scare late last year (which no one told me about, go figure), and dad had a stint put in his heart back in January (which I did know about). This "sense of mortality" has apparently lit a fire under Mom's ass to get me back home. But since I wasn't reacting to her passive aggressive hinting, she and step mom decided to go full crazy. My great uncle's health was bad, and he'd been asking about funeral arrangements for his sister (my grandma) for a while, so the moms decided to plan it. And use the event as a giant middle finger to me. They kept all the planning pretty hush-hush between the two of them, so no one on our side of the family actually knew about the funeral until like 2 weeks before. The moms said they'd invited hubby and I. No one thought anything about it. No one thought to mention, confirm, or check with me.
The plan was to scatter the ashes, say a few words, and maybe head to town for lunch. It was a small affair. The mom's didn't even tell the family that our great uncle was coming for it. Like I said, it was a small thing. Barely a footnote. No one thought it was odd because we're pretty chill people.
4th of July happens. Hubby and I are out. No one thought to mention it, as we were all busy celebrating and having a great time. Any time the topic of "this weekend" would start, the conversation would be quickly shifted by one of the moms. We went back home.
8th of July happens. Great uncle rolls into town with a few of his kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, and it's a surprise to everyone (but the moms). Everyone drives to the maple grove and the moms have brought a ton of food and stuff. It's a full blown party. No one on my side noticed I wasn't there, because there were so many extra faces outside the usual group. They did the spreading of the ashes, they said their words, they ate, they had a great time. It wasn't until our great uncle left, and all his side left with him, that they realized I wasn't there. And hadn't been there.
And this is where the crazy went up a notch. My brother says the moms were happy no one noticed I wasn't there. And that this was proof to everyone that I needed to move back because I was so easily forgotten about. Because none of them thought to reach out, right? They basically did a ton of guilt tripping manipulation bullshit and it made everyone upset at me for not showing up. Somehow it was my fault for being excluded. So suddenly everyone was on their side with "sticking it to me".
But then a few months went by, and tempers cooled, and then I guess the horror of it set in. Followed by the shame, but by then they were "in too deep". How do you undo something like this? And since I hadn't brought it up, I guess they figured they would all just stay quiet about it and hope I never asked about a funeral.
That's when I discovered the situation from my great uncle's Facebook and called my mom, who panicked and went with the stupidest solution. Claiming I was there. Don't I remember?
I ended up talking with a few friends from high school, mentioning the situation, and word got back to those in town. So suddenly town gossip and little old church ladies got involved. Was I, or wasn't I at the funeral? Did my family forget to invite me to the funeral of the only grandparents I'd ever know? Or am I just causing a ruckus? My brother said they all just went with mom's answer. Of course they wouldn't forget me. Of course I was there. Of course they're good people. And it just snowballed.
The family expected me to eventually fold. I'm usually a nonconfrontational person, so me sticking to my guns was unexpected. And then I missed Thanksgiving. And now Christmas. With no sign of backing down. And I guess the realization that I could just stop being part of their lives is setting in and my parents are panicking. He's tried just getting them to apologize and explain, but stubbornness prevails. They want to rug sweep, but I'm not letting them.
My brother is upset with everything that's happened. He's realized just how crappy it all has been and he wants nothing to do with it anymore. But since he lives with my mom, he can't "get away from it".
He has asked if he can come stay with us for a little bit. I spoke with hubby, and he's in agreement with me that my brother can come crash in our spare bedroom for as long as he wants. Brother works remotely, so it's no trouble for him to pick up and go. I believe he's making the trip today or tomorrow. Not entirely sure, but I expect crap to hit the fan when he arrives.
On a side note, hubby's stoked that my brother and I made up. The two usually game together, but haven't due to "the situation". He's downstairs right now setting up his man cave in preparation for my brother's arrival. I'm happy to see him so excited.
Brother's Here: December 27, 2023
My brother rolled in late last night. He'd obviously been crying and when I opened the door, he just held me and sobbed. I'd never seen him like that before and soon both of us were just standing in the doorway crying into one another. He kept apologizing. Over and over again. Said he wasn't sure why he went with it. Just kept saying sorry. Hubby got him all set up in the spare bedroom while brother and I talked. My brother's a wreck. He's always been a big guy, but he's lost a lot of weight and his clothes just hang off him. If I didn't know better, I'd think he was on drugs. We talked for a little bit before bed and he re-explained everything for my husband. I'd told hubby the story, but it was just so weird that hearing it again helped.
This morning my brother was up at dawn making some coffee and getting his work day going. Hubby's off all week (lucky) so hubby made us working folk some pancakes and bacon. So far everything's peaceful. We've decided not to answer any calls from our family. They've been made aware that he arrived safely, and that we are going to spend the New Years together, and that we're not answering any calls until January 1st. They may text if they wish. I'm sure they're losing their minds. Serves them right.
Everyone, have a safe and happy new years! Don't drink and drive!
Happy 2024!: January 2, 2024
I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holidays, and may the new year be full of joy and happiness!
Not too much of an update. Things here have been quiet. My brother's settled in nicely and he's a great housemate. Our place isn't very big, but we have full basement and a nice outside patio/porch area so it doesn't feel crowded at all with the extra addition. He's a quiet and clean guy. No hassle at all. He got some fresh clothes from the Walmart, a haircut, and trimmed his beard, so he's more "presentable" now. He's a lady killer when he gets cleaned up. He's made nice with the (very nosy, but kind) retired couple next door and is adapting to "city living" nicely.
Folks back home have been mostly well behaved. There's been a few texts back and forth, as we're not answering calls. Mom mainly wants to know when brother's coming back, but he's keen on staying here for a while. Mom said I can't "keep him" and I told her he's a grown ass man and can do what he wants. Brother says he has her blocked after she ORDERED him to return home.
Brother has tentatively asked if he could stay long term, should he decide to, or at least longer than a usual visitor would stay. Which we're fine with. He has a good paying job and could afford an apartment, but he's never lived on his own and I would guess he has some anxiety about it. Should that be the case, he'll start paying us some rent and we'd probably adjust to give him the basement as his own space.
Had to change the locks: January 17, 2024
My brother is officially staying with us for the long haul. Hubby and him spent all Sunday organizing the basement and shifting things around so he now has his own area to be comfortable in. He's pretty handy and has also started fixing little things around our house. Our windows and doors have never closed and locked/unlocked smoother. He even fixed one of the closets we never use because we can never get the darn door open. Sadly, he also had to change the locks on our house and get us all new keys.
This is because while hubby and I were out this Saturday, the moms showed up. They'd been calling and texting us all week, but we weren't really answering them, so I guess the two decided to drive over and hash it out in person. They have emergency keys to my place, and just let themselves in. Brother told them to leave, they argued, and my nosy (but kind) neighbors called the police when they noticed the commotion. So, we get a call from neighbor's wife, return home to some cops in our yard, all the neighbors out "vacuuming their trees", and my nosy (but kind) neighbors standing on my porch with my brother behind them, doing their best Gandalf "You shall not pass" impression.
Had to talk with the cops, explain that we were having a family dispute and word vomited. I don't really remember what all I said, and was shaking a lot. Our local cops are really great. Fantastic guys and gals in blue, and took it all in stride. It's really cold here, so one had me join him in his cruiser with the heat on, and gave me a bottle of water to calm down while we talked. They asked if we wanted the moms trespassed but I wasn't sure if that counted as a criminal charge so just asked the cops if they could just make them leave, which the cops did with no fuss. I think the moms were shocked we were taking this so seriously. They didn't fight or scream at us. Just left quietly.
My dad promised me he'd make sure his wife left us alone. "Or else". He said he'd also have a stern talk with my mom. Him and I talked Sunday morning, and he seemed absolutely at the end of his rope. Husband jokingly told my dad he could move in, too. To which he declined.
Not sure where to go from here, but we're getting some ring cameras installed once they arrive. And everyone but my dad is blocked. Hopefully they all just leave us alone.
Nothing New To Report: February 2, 2024
Had a lot of DMs for updates, but don't have much anything to report on. The moms are behaving themselves. All's quiet on the western front. Felt weird ignoring or copy/pasting "no updates" to everyone, so here's what we've been doing, should anyone care.
Dad got a new bird/squirrel feeder from Amazon (looks like a little picnic table for a child's dolly but has a mesh top for the bird seed. I think it's supposed to be for chickens?) It's totes adorbs. To his horror, it also works as a Cooper hawk feeder, so now he's "fortifying his defenses" and putting up some trellises around it. He'll have to wait till warmer weather before planting anything to grow on them.
We had some ring cameras installed and put in a motion-activated camera that double functions as a light bulb. It goes in the light fixture outside the front door and is pretty cool. Video quality isn't all that great, but it's a nice addition I guess. It does overlook the bird feeders, so I've been watching it on my lunch breaks on the days I have to go into the office.
Hubby and brother are feuding. They started a coop farm in Stardew Valley a few days ago and they both want to romance Leah. My husband confided in me that he's also been romancing Sebastian as a backup. I'm not sure why he's keeping this a secret, but he's pretty smug about it.
RELEVANT COMMENTS
fractal_frog I hope your dad can outsmart the hawks!
OOP: He'll be able to, I just know it. He's used to dealing with the wildlife and having hawks about, but he just wasn't expecting one to snag a meal right from his new feeder.
I told him it was "technically" still a bird feeder. Just....for bigger birds. Which he thought was funny. He said he might make a little "no hawks allowed" sign to put up next to it.
MissOP: keep the updates coming. the moms are so close to folding it's just a little bit more. LMAO also, the bro mance between your husband and brother is so cute. lol Honestly, I think your husband making sure he has a side piece of Sebastian is absolutely the play.
OOP: So far still no word from the moms, but I hope you're right. I would love an apology and for us to begin moving past this. But I NEED that apology. I feel selfish saying that, but I refuse to "be the bigger person" on this. I just won't.
As for my brother and husband, yeah, they're basically soul mates. The two hit it off immediately when they first met, and they've been thick as thieves for years.
Update: February 27, 2024
My dad came out for a visit over the weekend. We had a good time and the weather was lovely for some grilling and beers. It was really nice to see him again and he seemed healthy and in good spirits.
Here's his report from back home: Step mom (dad's wife) has started to realize she's screwed up. I credit her change of mindset to the fact that my dad sat her down and laid it out for her: she leaves his kids alone, or she's getting divorce papers. That apparently shut her up right quick, because they had a prenup done when they married and I'm not sure the details of it, but it wouldn't end favorably for her. She hasn't worked in years, so I imagine she'd be eligible for alimony? But I'm not versed in any of that legal mumbojumbo. Dad didn't seem too worried about it, so I'm not gonna worry about it.
Step dad was pissed the police were involved in the last "mom visit" (despite no one getting arrested or anything) and was in a "the kids are out of control and need to be reigned back in" mindset. When my dad pointed out that "the kids" in question were all in their mid-30s, it took some of the steam out of stepdad's sails. According to my dad, even my mom looked a little surprised when he said that. So, part of me is wondering if a good chunk of this whole thing is my mom not truly realizing that her kids were grown, and no longer children she could make demands of. Both of the moms have left us alone. I expected my mom to continue to kick up a fuss, but I think the cops spooked her.
There was a wonderful suggestion by a comment or to get their pastor involved, which I passed along to my dad. Dad has since spoken to their pastor about everything. He's a young guy, relatively new to their church, and joked that his first month on the job he had to do 3 funerals in a row and his new "flock" were just dying to get away from him, so he's got a sense of humor which is nice. The new pastor agreed to sit down with everyone and help the family hash it all out in a true "Come to Jesus" type moment next month, so that maybe we could celebrate Easter together as our first holiday as a family. Dad said the pastor was aware our family was having some troubles, but unsure of exactly what was going on, and since he was new, the pastor didn't want to pry. He has also agreed to do a small service down at my uncle's maple grove later in the summer, as it usually floods and is a muddy mess all spring. According to my dad, my aunt and uncle are so over all the drama and just ready to move on, so I expect hugs and apologies from them when we next meet.
Stardew Valley Update: My brother was victorious in the grand fight for Leah. It was a hard battle. Well fought. When my husband exposed his plans to woo Sebastian all this time, it was quite the betrayal. Dramatics aside, their farm is really cute and I'm so happy they're enjoying the game!
Update 4/1 - Final one I think - April 1, 2024
Happy April Fools everyone! I hope you all check your caramel apples for stray onions before taking a bite! I also hope your Easter weekend was a delightful one.
It is with great joy that I tell you all about our most recent update! Possibly even a conclusion to this whole ordeal.
The entire family (aunt, uncle, moms, dads, brother, me, husband) and pastor met at my dad's house and we all sat down to hash the situation out. As expected from what my dad said, my aunt and uncle greeted us all with apologies and hugs, which was nice. My uncle usually helps host the Easter egg hunts with the church and he brought our Easter baskets to give to us in case us kids weren't sticking around the for the weekend. I'm not sure why but seeing it made me tear up and feel stupid, because it was just a basket of candy but it meant a lot to me for some reason.
The pastor led us in a prayer and talked about forgiveness and such. He then asked us all to talk one at a time about how we're feeling and what we want the end result of today to be. No one was allowed to interrupt so everyone got to talk. It was nice. The consensus for the group was that most everyone wanted things to go back to "normal". The only ones who had any variance off this was my mom and step dad. They both wanted all us kids to move back to the area.
The pastor asked them why they wanted us back, and neither could give a good reason other than "because family", and the pastor asked us if we were thriving where we were. And we said we were. He asked if we were happy there. Which we were. He then asked my mom and step dad if they wanted us to give up our happiness to make them happy.
And Mom broke down and said no. We all had a good cry. The pastor then asked about the funeral and lies that led up to it and followed it and how it made us all feel and what we wished we'd done differently if we had the chance. It was all very emotional, but in a good way, you know? Everyone apologized and admitted they f-ed up and did a really crappy thing.
We all talked for a long, long time and the pastor was a great mediator. Eventually we all reached some sort of resolution and I think we're good now. Emotions are still high and a little raw in areas, but we stayed for Easter weekend and had a nice time. We're going to keep moving forward slowly and try to repair the relationship, but I believe we're well and truly out of the woods.
As for my brother, he's still staying with us, and mom will stop trying to guilt trip him back home. He's thinking about renting a small apartment in our area but we're not pushing him to make a decision. He knows he's welcome to stay as long as he wants. I think he wants to try dating (he's had a few girlfriends but never anything serious) and is embarrassed to bring any girls around our place, lol. He's been going to a few random classes/bookclubs at the local library for something free to do and hitting it off with all the little old ladies who attend, and they keep trying to hook him up with girls his age who they know. He has been on a few lunches/coffee dates with a couple girls, but I think he's too embarrassed by the attention to give it a real try at "dating" any of them. He's happy, though, which is all I could ask for.
I'm not sure if there will be any more updates, as I think it's all be resolved about as much as it can be at the moment. I wanted to thank you all for your words of advice and giving me a place to vent and scream into the void. Please be kind to one another and to yourselves. Thank you.
Relevant Comments
emjkr: What a nice and hopeful update, I’m really glad you stuck to your guns when everyone threw sanity out the window!
But, could your mother explain how she thought this would work out in her favour?
OOP: I don't think mom thought too far ahead. I believe she assumed it would all just magically work out the way she wanted it to. She said she wasn't sure what she was expecting to happen (which I think was a lie, but I wasn't going to push it).
mak_zaddy: This was a great update! But ummmmmm no stardew valley update? What gives? Has Sebastian been woo’ed? How’s Leah? What’s happening?
OOP: Sebastian has indeed been wooed (and whoohooed) There's kids and cows and chickens. The two are still having a wonderful time at the game. They're working on completing the community center but it's slow going as they aren't trying to speedrun and just doing things as they want. I believe they're thinking about going into the desert mines once they complete that bundle, but they're both super chicken shit about it!
-my-cabbages: I don't really understand what you had to apologize for ... but I'm glad you're happy and the situation seems to be settling down
OOP: There wasn't much of an apology on my end, as everyone agreed I had done nothing wrong. Mine was more of a "I'm sorry you didn't feel as though I would listen." Type apology, which I don't really believe is a proper apology because apologies like that push the blame back on another. I mostly expressed my feelings and the shock of it all, and how betrayed I felt.

----NEW UPDATE----

Small, happy update: May 7, 2024 (1 month later)
Things as wonderful as the moment. Still doing baby steps with The Moms. We're texting and talking on the phones more, which is nice. Very civil.
Dad "accidentally" bought a bunch of hand crafted bird feeders at a craft fair. By accidentally, I mean: he had a little too much fun in the beer tent, went for a stroll while step mom wasn't looking, and stumbled upon a guy's booth and bought "one of each". He wouldn't tell me how MANY "one of each" was, but he cackled like a witch when I asked. Step mom said she's forcing him to give a few to me, so I'm expecting a delivery or a Dad-visit any day now.
My brother is officially "going steady" with a girl. We've met her a few times and she seems like a real sweetheart. She's our age and has a little boy (5-6 years old, I haven't asked) from a previous relationship (The dad's not in the picture from what I can gather). She's the granddaughter of one of his Book Club members, so the old ladies made good match makers in the end. The relationship is still very new and I'm routing for them.
No new Stardew Valley updates. Work has been a little crazy lately and I haven't been able to play much of anything, and brother has been distracted by his new lady friend. So, husband finally started Baldur's Gate 3, and fell for Gale's "magic trick" so now those two are a thing. I expect him to be sufficiently distracted from reality for the next few weeks.

2024.05.14 04:24 NotTomPettysGirl Ballots in Anchorage mayoral runoff roll in above levels seen in April, with thousands more anticipated on election day

Ballots in Anchorage mayoral runoff roll in above levels seen in April, with thousands more anticipated on election day
Anchorage voters have until Tuesday at 8 p.m. to cast ballots in the mayoral runoff race between incumbent Mayor Dave Bronson and challenger Suzanne LaFrance, former chair of the Assembly.
The candidates emerged as the top-two vote-getters in the April 2 contest, advancing to a head-to-head runoff that has played out the last several weeks.
The Bronson and LaFrance campaigns both spent the weekend door-knocking in neighborhoods across the municipality, and are continuing to campaign with sign-waving and phone-banking efforts to get out the vote as the deadline to return ballots closes in.
Early data shows that voter turnout is on pace with other recent mayoral elections.
As of Friday, the city’s election center had already received and sorted a total of 41,125 ballots. On Monday, election staff were working to process thousands more ballots that voters had returned by mail, in drop boxes and at vote centers over the weekend.
As of 1 p.m. Monday, election staff had sorted an additional 5,700 ballots, and thousands more sat in large black duffel bags awaiting sorting.
It’s likely between 10,000 and 15,000 were returned this weekend, according to Acting Election Administrator William Northrop.
“I’m optimistic that turnout is high,” Northrop said. “Right now we are outpacing the regular election.”
About 4,550 more ballots had been returned by Friday than on the Friday before the April regular election. Ultimately 72,250 ballots were cast in that election.
The 2021 runoff between Bronson and then-Assembly member Forrest Dunbar saw record-high turnout for a mayoral contest, with 90,816 ballots cast in a race Bronson won by 1,193 votes. In the 2015 runoff won by Ethan Berkowitz over then-Assembly member Amy Demboski, 70,650 residents voted.
Election staff are anticipating the biggest wave of voting on Tuesday, the final day to vote.
“If it’s anything like the 2021 runoff, we are going to be looking at 20,000 (ballots) for election night alone,” Northrop said.
Northrop said that Tuesday evening’s preliminary election results will likely include all ballots received at the election center through Monday, and possibly some gathered by election workers from drop boxes and vote centers early Tuesday.
That means a large enough share of the ballot totals will likely be processed in those preliminary results to give campaigns and officials a solid picture of which candidate is ahead, unless it’s a thin margin of a few thousand votes or less separating them. As ballots continue to be received and tallied in the days after Tuesday, margins typically tick up and down slightly, but they are rarely upended. However, if the results are close — as was the case in the 2021 election between Bronson and Dunbar — it is possible for a candidate who is slightly behind in the initial count to edge into the lead.
Neither campaign is likely to declare victory based on Tuesday night’s preliminary results.
Election staff will publish the first preliminary election results after 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
Then this week starting Wednesday, they will post updated results daily by about 6:30 p.m. as staff continue to process the ballots cast on Tuesday and as more arrive by mail.
Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by 8 p.m. Tuesday in order to count. Anyone who is mailing their ballot on Monday or Tuesday should go inside the post office and ask a postal worker to hand cancel, or hand stamp, their ballot envelope, Northrop said.
Voters using drop boxes must place their ballot into a drop box by 8 p.m., he said.
In the April election, “we did have a lot of voters who waited to the last minute and also after the election to get us their ballot. Unfortunately, those don’t count. We need them postmarked by election night,” Northrop said.
Also, anyone casting a ballot in person at a vote center late Tuesday needs to be in line by 8 p.m. in order to vote, he said.
Anchorage’s three vote centers are located downtown at City Hall, in Midtown at the Loussac Library, and in Eagle River at the Eagle River Town Center. Vote centers open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and will close at 8 p.m.
Registered voters who did not receive a ballot in the mail or whose ballot was lost, damaged or stolen can go to a vote center to get a replacement ballot.
The runoff election results won’t be official until they are certified by the Anchorage Assembly. Certification is scheduled for May 31, according to the city’s election calendar.
Whoever is elected will officially begin the three-year term as mayor on July 1.

2024.05.14 03:56 Checkmatechamp13 Governor Hochul Announces Pilot Program to Enhance Reach of Metro-North Railroad to Orange and Rockland Counties

Governor Hochul Announces Pilot Program to Enhance Reach of Metro-North Railroad to Orange and Rockland Counties Governor Kathy Hochul (ny.gov)
With congestion pricing set to begin on June 30, Governor Kathy Hochul today announced a pilot program to enhance the reach of MTA Metro-North Railroad to Orange and Rockland Counties, as an alternative to driving to New York City. Under the pilot, Metro-North will begin weekend service on the Haverstraw-Ossining ferries for the first time ever, create massive monthly UniTicket discounts of 78 percent to 90 percent on the ferries and buses that cross the Hudson River, and slash parking rates by 25 percent for Orange and Rockland residents using Metro-North’s garage in North White Plains.
“Many residents from Orange and Rockland Counties commute to New York City for their jobs and leisure, and we are finding alternative ways for commuters to get to the city without the added costs and traffic,” Governor Hochul said. “This pilot program will give individuals from commuter areas easier and more accessible access to the central business district and beyond.”
Starting Saturday, May 25, the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry will operate continuously between 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on weekends. The ferry has traditionally operated only during weekday rush hours. Metro-North also will offer discounts for monthly tickets on the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry, the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry, the Newburgh-Beacon bus and the Hudson Link. In addition, Rockland and Orange County residents will receive a 25 percent discount on monthly parking at the North White Plains station, which is served by the Harlem Line.
With the new discounts, monthly bus and ferry ticket add-ons purchased in conjunction with a monthly rail pass good for an unlimited number of trips for each calendar month will fall dramatically. The current monthly UniTicket fare on the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry is $43.75. It will fall by $34.50 or 78.9 percent to just $13.75. The current monthly UniTicket fare on the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry is $14.50. It will fall by $13.50 or 93.1 percent to just $1.00. The Newburgh Beacon Bus monthly UniTicket fare is $10.00. It will fall by $9.00 or 90 percent to just $1. The Hudson Link Bus monthly UniTicket fare (to either Tarrytown or to White Plains) is $60.00. It will fall by $30.00 or 50 percent, to just $30.00.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said, “It is no secret that the folks who live west of the Hudson River don’t get the same quality of frequency and reliability of service as we have on the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven Lines. As we approach the onset of congestion pricing, we want to make sure there are a few more options for people in Orange and Rockland Counties to get to this amazing Metro-North service.”
Metro-North President Catherine Rinaldi said, “We are thrilled to be able to offer weekend ferry service to West of Hudson residents looking to connect to Metro-North’s scenic Hudson Line service. And with discounted parking at our North White Plains parking garage, Orange and Rockland County residents who prefer the Harlem Line will have an added incentive to take Metro-North service into Manhattan or other destinations around the region.”
State Senator Pete Harckham said, “Rockland County residents are clamoring for public transit service into New York City. The new weekend ferry service and the Uniticket discounts on the Hudson Link bus service and the MTA two ferries are a good start toward exploring new ways to enhance travel options for Rockland.”
Assemblymember Dana Levenberg said, “It is so exciting to see one of Ossining's economic development priorities coming to fruition, just in time for summer fun on the beautiful Hudson River. The expanded ferry service will enable so many leisure travelers to relax and enjoy an inexpensive boat ride between our downtowns on both sides of the river, where they will discover our restaurants, shops, the summer concert series, and so much more. This will be a major boon to our local economies.”
Assemblymember Ken Zebrowski said, “West of Hudson commuters know the difficulties of getting to New York City on public transit. Today’s announcement will ensure that they have more options to do so without hitting their wallets. Expanded ferry service will mean more people than just daily commuters will be able to use the service, and discounted buses will expand options for Rocklanders. I thank the MTA for collaborating on new ways to open up our robust Metro-North service to west of Hudson New Yorkers.”
Haverstraw Mayor Michael Kohut said, “The Village of Haverstraw is elated that our long-hoped for weekend ferry connection to Ossining and the Metro-North train service is finally becoming a reality. It will serve weekenders going in both directions and help to continue growing the west side of the Hudson as a tourist and day-tripper destination. It is long overdue.”
Ossining Mayor Rika Levin said, “Connecting communities accessibly and affordably is essential for our commuters and our local businesses and is of vital importance for regional economic growth and tourism—being able to make those connections using reliable ferry service helps us achieve our transportation goals while reducing carbon emissions.”
The pilot is expected to run through Veteran’s Day. It comes after Metro-North exempted the Port Jervis Line and the Pascack Valley Line from the systemwide inflation-adjustment fare updates that took effect in March 2017, April 2019, and August 2023.

USD/CNH: AUD, NZD, JPY face hammering if Asia’s FX anchor comes loose. May 14, 2024
By : David Scutt, Market Analyst
  • The Chinese yuan is trading at multi-year highs against the currencies of its major trading partners
  • This strength has helped to counteract rampant US dollar strength, preventing larger losses for Asian FX names in 2024
  • With the risk of an escalating trade war with the US, Chinese policymakers may be tempted to weaken the yuan to help with exporter competitiveness
  • A revival of large-scale Fed rate cuts bets may provide respite for battered Asian FX names
If you trade Asian currencies like the Japanese yen, Australian or New Zealand dollar, you should always keep a close eye on what’s happening in the Chinese yuan. Especially this week. Because with trade wars between China and the United States set to erupt again, and with a raft of top tier US economic data scheduled, what happens in USD/CNH will be highly influential for other Asian currencies.

CNH performance influential on JPY, AUD & NZD

As the currency of the world’s second largest economy rising rapidly up the ranks of the most traded FX names worldwide, you’re doing yourself a disservice if the Chinese yuan is not on your radar. As seen in the chart below, for large periods of time, movements in USD/CNH have often been mirrored by USD/JPY, AUD/USD and NZD/USD.
https://preview.redd.it/yd4hx6wmpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf1aa3b7d74c44631915dc68559b0a17b9c43846
Up until recently, USD/CNH and USD/JPY had a positive correlation in the high 0.8s on a rolling quarterly basis. For AUD/USD and NZD/USD, negative correlations above -0.9 were regularly observed over the same timeframe during the past year.
While the common denominator is the US dollar, with its movements influential across the entire FX market, what is not readily known right now is the Chinese yuan is not weak but strong when you look at its performance against a basket of currencies from its major trading partners, hitting levels not seen October 2022 in April. It’s only really been weakening against the greenback.

CNH an anchor for Asian FX names

Even though it’s not been enough to offset the impact of the strong US dollar entirely, measures from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) to curb market forces seeking to weaken the yuan against the dollar have likely helped limit losses in other Asian FX names against the big dollar, making the yuan somewhat of an anchor for currencies in the region. Hence, if this anchor were to come loose, it’s very likely Asian FX names would be hammered.
One only needs to look back to the yuan devaluation episode in 2015 to what may happen. And that was when the yuan’s influence was considerably smaller than it is today.

Trend breakdown may explain weakening relationships

While the yuan has often had strong relationships with the likes of the JPY, AUD and NZD, that’s faded somewhat in recently. Rather than being less influential on currencies across the region, the breakdown of strong established trends in other asset classes may explain the waning relationship, resulting in choppy price action as traders and investors wait for definitive signals as to which direction markets will move next.
When new trends become established, it would be surprising if the relationship between the yuan and other Asia FX names does not strengthen again.

Trade war risk adds to devaluation threat

If you’re looking for a major catalyst that could spark a trend change, look no further than the threat of an escalating trade war between the United States and China.
If media reports are on the money, US President Joe Biden will quadruple tariffs on Chinese made electric vehicles and sharply increase levies for other green energy industries in an announcement later Tuesday, opening the door for other western governments to do the same given a concerted push to foster local green initiatives.
As mentioned above, Chinese policymakers have been pushing back against market forces seeking to weaken the yuan, setting the midpoint of the USD/CNY daily trading band far stronger than market forces would imply for months on end.
While not a certainty, the threat posed to China’s trade-exposed sectors from greater import barriers abroad, at a time when policymakers are fighting to prevent the yuan from weakening further, you don’t have to be Einstein to see why authorities may be temped to devalue the yuan to support its export sector.
If China were to go down that path, it would likely lead to a rapid appreciation in the US dollar, generating substantial volatility not only in Asian FX names but broader financial markets. As such, watching the daily USD/CNY fix may be advantageous near-term. If a devaluation episode were to occur, it would likely be initiated at the start of onshore yuan.

USD bull case also its biggest threat

Outside the threat posed by trade wars, the other potential catalyst than could spark a trend change comes from the US economic data calendar with CPI, PPI and retail sales figures for April released over the next 48 hours.
For the US dollar, uncomfortably sticky inflationary pressures have been a major factor behind its strength this year, combining with strong, above-trend economic growth to delay the start of the Federal Reserve’s rate cutting cycle.
https://preview.redd.it/48iobvyrpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=db6418194004169e8f6dfd4feaaccb9c3b1d6067
With these factors part of an established trend, markets now expect it, helping to prevent sustained periods of weakness from occurring. However, now that the number of rate cuts priced in 2024 has fallen from nearly seven to less than two, it’s now up to the data to keep feeding the prevailing narrative. If it doesn’t – as seen when nonfarm payrolls and ISM services data whiffed earlier this month – it can result in an abrupt weakness in the US dollar.
The more data that disappoints, the greater the risk it may encourage traders to unwind bullish bets and result in sustained dollar weakness. In other words, good news is arguably already priced in.

USD/CNH technical outlook

Adding to the sense that this week may be important for broader directional risks for Asian FX names, USD/CNH sits at an interesting juncture on the daily chart, threatening to surge straight back into the uptrend it was trading in for much of the year.
https://preview.redd.it/i3p101rypa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9746fc6e2cce9745a4fe15e33e299736adce5cb
The bounce from the lows struck Friday two weeks ago has been powerful, seeing USD/CNH do away with two horizontal resistance levels at 7.2200 and 7.2335 before breaking through and closing above the 50 and 200-day moving averages on Monday.
With the downtrend in RSI threatening to break and MACD crossing over from below, directional risks look to be turning higher for USD/CNH. Aside from former uptrend support and horizontal resistance around 7.2550, there’s not a lot standing between USD/CNH and return to levels seen in late 2023.
While buying dips looks preferable to selling rallies near-term, it may pay to see how the price action evolves around these levels over the next 48 hours given ample event risk.
Another push and the pair will be back in its former uptrend, allowing for fresh longs to be established targeting a move towards the 2024 highs. A stop order placed below either the trendline or 50/200DMA zone would offer protection against reversal.
Alternatively, should the price fail to hold above the 50 and 200DMA, stops could be placed above this zone, allowing for fresh short positions to be established targeting a retracement towards 7.1730.
Either way, if we do see a meaningful directional shift in the yuan, it’s likely the Japanese yen, Aussie and New Zealand dollars will be following close behind.

Edit: If they knew....👀
Edit: OP ran a python script, and came up with exactly 741 business days between dfv final tweet in 2021 and his first tweet on Sunday. I calculated using online calendar, and I got 719 business days, so I don't know who's right
"RC POSTED APRIL 24, 2021 the american BULL FLAG."
RC TIMED THE LOW 3 YEARS LATER week of APRIL 24, 2024"
"Bro it's really not that hard. Let me show you. Take a trend line from 2002 and place it around the latest low in 2024. It's a resistance support. That is the next best price to accumulate shares or buy back cheap and take back control.
Thats how they knew. It's literally a 3 year cycle. Been saying this for years.
1 + 3 = 4 + 3 = 7.... like there are hundreds of hints pointing to it but everyone took the tinfoil extra far with it lmao. Gotta love it but some explanations can actually be very simple."

2024.05.13 20:17 Badboyardie Is the Meme craze back?

Wall Street stocks climbed early Monday ahead of key US inflation data as shares of GameStop skyrocketed in a move that sparked talk of a revived "meme stock" craze. Shares of GameStop soared more than 85 percent, while AMC Entertainment jumped 18 percent in moves that recalled a 2021 stock market frenzy led by traders exchanging tips on Reddit. Besides data on consumer and wholesale prices for April, this week's calendar includes retail sales for the same period. Near 1445 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.2 percent at 39,575.62. The broad-based S&P 500 added 0.1 percent at 5,226.55, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.2 percent to 16,377.72. The GameStop jump came after one of the key figures in the "meme stock" investor movement, Keith Gill, posted on X, the former Twitter, for the first time in three years under the "Roaring Kitty" account. The meme stock phenomenon, which emerged at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, was later turned into the Hollywood film "Dumb Money," in which actor Paul Dano portrays Gill. The dynamic "suggests that the meme stock craze could be back," said a note from Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB. Reported By Barron

2024.05.13 17:43 MF_Bfg Company Makes Us "Borrow" Vacation Days or Take Pay Cuts to Vacation (10+ year employee at FI): legal?

Hi all,
Thank you in advance for your kind advice.
I believe my Japanese employer, working through our NA branch HQ in Los Angeles, is violating the rights of its two Canadian employees. I've been trying to deal with this issue through my company but they keep insisting (wrongly, I believe) that their policies are in line with Canadian law.
To summarize, there are two Canadian employees, one in B.C., and one in Ontario. We have both worked for the company in full-time roles for almost 12 years.
I recently scheduled a vacation for this summer, and received this note from my manager:
**Also, as long as I see your vacation balance in ADP, it’s 44 hours against your total request 88 hours.
The gap between 44 and 88 hours will be unpaid time off. Please check the balance and confirm your request.
I think you know the below well, HR paid all remaining vacation hours at every end of year based on Canadian law.
So, the company gives time off hours every month and if you would not use the hours in 2024, HR will pay the remaining hours as of Dec 2024.
If any question regarding this, please reach out to HR to confirm but there has been no change for this operation every year.**
The key issue here is that our company makes us accrue vacation hours during the current year. As a result, when we wish to take vacation hours before "accruing" enough hours we are either a) are made to take unpaid days that will then be paid to us later in the year once we have accrued the appropriate hours, or, b) "borrow" vacation hours that we would have to pay back if we were to quit or be dismissed. At the end of each calendar year we are paid out in cash in full for unused vacation days, with no option for carry over.
Here's a summary from my HR:
Canada employees can request “frontloaded” (borrowed) vacation hours if they do not have enough accrued vacation hours at the time vacation period is requested. Once approved by Manager, frontloaded hours will show as a minus (-) in ADP system and employee will receive forecasted pay for those borrowed hours. Frontloaded hours will begin to balance/offset at the end of each monthly pay cycle until the (-) balance reaches “0”. Once the vacation balanced is at “0”, normal vacation accrual will resume (i.e., showing a current available accrued vacation count). Note: in the event employee leaves COMPANY (i.e., resigns, etc.) while there is still an active (-) vacation hours balance, employee will need to pay COMPANY back for the vacation balance $ owed (amount that was forecasted).
My reading of federal and provincial law shows that the vacation pay system is not built to accrue vacation hours during the current year (with the notable exception of one's first year of employment), but rather using vacation hours accrued during the previous year of employment. It also shows that employees in Ontario have ten months after the year of employment to take vacation days, and 12 months for employees in B.C.. Federal law states that vacation pay is to be paid out 14 days prior to a vacation, or immediately afterwards in some situations. For good measure, B.C. law explicitly says that vacation days must be used and unused vacation days cannot be paid out (they are eventually paid out in Ontario).
My coworker just took a vacation in April where she was forced to take a pay cut of three days from her regular pay cheque. In the past, she has signed a "contract" to promise to pay back any "borrowed" vacation days. I'm now being told the same thing concerning an upcoming vacation. In the past the company has used the "Canadian law" they claim requires them to pay out all unused vacation days immediately at the end of each calendar year as the justification for denying we two Canadian employees an extra week of vacation when he reached our tenth year of employment, which is standard for all other employees in the N.A. division.
I've never heard of any other 10+ year employee in Canada who has to "borrow" or pay back vacation days. I'm the only person I know who receives an immediate pay out for unused vacation at 12:01 each Jan 1st.
I have sent my HR department my concerns with references to sources from the B.C., Ontario, and federal governments, but they keep parroting our policy and insisting their "Canadian labour attorney" approved it.
What does the community here think? Are there situations where this sort of arrangement is allowed? Again, we are long time, full-time (not contract) employees.
I just want my company to comply with the law - and, if they're wrong, give us that extra week of vacation we should have received at our ten year mark.
Thanks!
